Being A Captain Is Hard Work

Title: Being a Captain is Hard Work: A Captain No Beard Story

Author: Carole P. Roman, Bonnie Lemaire (Illustrator)

Genre: Children’s Literature, Children’s Picture Books

Book Blurb:

Captain No Beard is determined to travel to Dew Rite Volcano. He won’t listen when Mongo predicts a storm or Linus indicates they are headed in the wrong direction. He insists Polly cook in the galley even though the seas are getting rough. What’s a crew to do with a stubborn, know-it-all captain?

Will they convince the captain he is barreling headlong into danger, or will Captain No Beard jeopardize both his safety and the crew’s with his single-minded determination to go where he wants?

My Review:

The Flying Dragon is on its way to Dew Rite Volcano. Captain No Beard and his crew are in for some stormy seas. Will the Captain listen to his crew or will they capsize?

I really loved this story because it teaches children there are consequences for your actions and your actions affect other people, not just yourself. It also explains what happens when you are on a ship and a storm is coming.

Children and parents will learn the valuable lesson of listening to others, just like Captain No Beard.

I also loved the cloud types list in the back of the book.

Another brilliant book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations by Bonnie Lemaire were colorful and made the words come to life. The lessons learned are ones all children can relate to. Being a leader is not only a big responsibility, but is hard work, too.

Favorite Character: Hallie. While the Captain was making decisions, she was trying to speak common sense. Even though he didn’t listen to her (or anyone else for that matter), she remained calm. Hallie is an excellent first mate and she’s my favorite character in the Captain No Beard series.

Favorite Quote:

Hallie looked at him with a hard stare. “Why do you think you have two ears and one mouth, Captain?”

My Rating:  5 stars
