If You Were Me and Lived in… does for history what her other award-winning series did for culture. So get on-board this time-travel machine and discover the world through the eyes of a young person just like you.

My Review:

Carole P. Roman is back for her 4th book in the Civilizations Throughout Time series and this time she’s tackling Colonial America. She shows children how English settlers (Puritans) left England for the New World and the hardships they endured. A creative look at Colonial American History that lets a child embrace their roots and be grateful to those brave men and women who established a brand new country.

The viewpoint of the Puritans was an interesting choice but it allowed Roman to share the heritage of New England, which I enjoyed. Roman doesn’t water down how difficult life was back then and that only adds authenticity to this book.

My favorite part was the illustrations. They described without words what Roman was explaining yet they weren’t scary. Very expressive.

There’s a lot of historical information here and it flows well. There are clear breaks to allow for discussion and this would make an excellent addition to any school’s curriculum.

My Rating:  4.5 stars
