Unexpected Holiday Bonus by Merry Holly

CEO Suzette LeBlec has a problem. Well, two actually. She needs a top-notch temporary replacement for her administrative assistant’s maternity leave, and she needs to find a way to outmaneuver a hostile takeover attempt by Mark Adams. To make things worse, it’s almost Christmas, the time when Suzette most feels alone in the world. Too bad that handsome man at the party got away. But when the same stranger applies for the temp job, his almost-too-good-to-be-true credentials set off Suzette’s alarms.

Dirk Harvey worked hard for years to remain anonymous while he built his father’s floundering company back up to its glory days. But when he discovers the stunning woman he’d spotted at a party is hiring, he decides to go undercover as “Dirk Mulligan”, administrative assistant extraordinaire. Besides, he and Suzette have a common problem: takeover King Mark Adams. Maybe they can find a solution together plus a little holiday bonus as well.

Excerpt:

Chapter Three

“You know you won’t last a week there?” said his irritated admin, Catherine Sullivan. But she didn’t stop there. “This has to be the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard from you. Why didn’t you just introduce yourself?”

Dirk shrugged. He knew Cathy’s annoyance stemmed from the fact that he’d ignored all her passes through the years. If she wasn’t such a great admin, he would have let her go for her poor attitude. Pretty in an efficient way, always put together in her five-hundred-dollar suits, but too bossy. Nope, she wasn’t his type. But Suzette just might be. He was sure she’d be bossy, her suits probably cost thousands, and she also seemed organized. Maybe it was the power she exuded. Mmm. Sexy Suzette was different. The minute their eyes locked he’d felt it deep down. He’d wager his company on it. If Ms. LeBlec heard him call her Sexy Suzette he’d also bet she’d take him apart piece by piece. Oh yes, he definitely wanted to know what made her tick.

“Dirk, we have pending deals with strict deadlines that require your time and attention before the end of year. How will you handle your own business? Plus, Ms. LeBlec can accuse you of corporate spying if you’re caught.”

“We’re in different industries, Cathy. Stop worrying. I’ll check in with you before work, lunch and afterward. I’ll do my paperwork in the evenings. Nothing’s going to slip.”

“But…”

“Cathy, it’s my business.”

“I’m well aware of that. I’m just trying to save you from yourself.”

“Thanks, but I’ll be fine.”

His cell phone rang. Smiling, he put his finger to his lips to shut down Cathy’s prattle. “This is Dirk.”

“Mr. Mulligan, this is Mrs. Holmes from Sherman Industries. We received your résumé today. I’d like to schedule an appointment now for testing, and an interview with Ms. LeBlec. Are you available today at five?”

“That’s kind of short notice.”

“It is, but we’re ready to make a decision. Your qualifications are impeccable. We’d be remiss if we didn’t at least interview you.”

His afternoon flew by and before he knew it it was a quarter to five. If he didn’t hurry he’d be late for the interview. Call him crazy, but his nerves fluttered in his belly. He had never had to interview for a job before. Could he pull this off? And if he did, what would that get him? Would Sexy Suzette be flattered he’d gone through all this trouble just to meet her? Or would she consider him some nut and toss him out on his ass?

The revolving doors at 100 Park Place spit out people, like a drunk on New Year’s Eve giving back everything he’d eaten and drunk that night. Going against the flow, he made his way to the information desk, gave the guard his name, and waited for someone to escort him to the eighty-ninth floor. The building only had ninety floors. The revolving restaurant on the top floor, the Skyview, had fed him on many an occasion.

It didn’t take long. A young-looking guard beckoned him to a pillar of elevators. The guard slid his key card into the slot. When the door opened the guard stepped in with him. Personalized service. I guess no one gets onto eight-nine without a key or escort. Or maybe it’s just because it’s after hours.

He approved of the décor as he stepped off the elevator, bidding good-bye to the guard. The designer had shown good taste in their choice of fabric and color. Dirk wondered if Suzette had had a hand in the decorating, probably not. Silk wallpaper in soft muted colors of mauve, spring green and pale blue absorbed the noise, along with the blue carpet thick under his feet. At the end of the hall, before massive carved wooden double doors, sat a single mahogany desk equipped with electronics and three phones.

He knocked. Waited. And then knocked again. After what seemed like hours though was really only seconds, he pulled open the doors and walked into another office. The desk console looked like a command center. Ms. LeBlec must be a busy woman if she needed more than one admin. At the second set of double carved wooden doors he knocked. The response was immediate.

“Come in.”

You could have knocked her over with a feather. Standing in front of her was her tuxedo man from the party. And he looked just as delicious in a suit as he did in a tux. Mmmm, I wonder how he’d look out of it. His being an executive admin didn’t fit her image of him. At the party he had screamed wealth, aloofness, and power. Standing, she extended her hand.

“I’m Suzette LeBlec.”

“I’m Dirk Mulligan. Thank you for seeing me, Ms. LeBlec.”

A deep husky voice caressed her ears as his direct gaze mesmerized her, begging her to reveal her innermost secrets. Control yourself, Suzette. Taking a deep breath, she dug her nails into the palm of her left hand to keep focused. Good thing she didn’t have to go up against him in a deal. She’d worry about her abilities to concentrate and win.
