Title: The Road to Transition
Author: Bree Record
Genre: Memoir, Gender Transition Surgery, LGBTQ
The Road to Transition is my story, which was forty days in the telling and fifty-five years in the living; that is, if you can call existing living. It still amazes me how much you can lose without actually realizing it. Each lost piece takes on the worth exceeding that of the finest of golden treasures. I know because in the telling of this story, I discovered that.
The forty days are those that led up to my gender confirmation surgery. It was a time with as many ups and downs and gut-wrenching twists as the wildest of roller coasters. I tried to remain true to my journal, though at times I was sick and dizzy. I endeavored to bring to you the accurate portrait of what lay down The Road to Transition.
The Road to Transition is the story of Bree and her compelling journey leading up to her gender confirmation surgery. Imagine the heartache, confusion, grief, anger, frustration, identity crisis, knowing you are female living in a male body. Then, and only then, are you able to understand what Bree went through in one day.
I am not transgendered nor have I ever been mistaken for a man, but from the moment I started reading Bree’s memoir, my mind fused with hers and felt all the turmoil and anxiety she went through. My heart broke for her so many times, I wanted to reach through my Kindle and give her a hug, tell her it was all going to be okay.
Bree takes us from the time she was born (Sarah) through her identity crisis (Steve) through the incredible process leading up to her surgery. Told in journal format, she holds nothing back. With clarity of mind, she describes in vivid detail the agony of her journey. Yet, she does it without blame. She doesn’t rail against her parents, family members, society or human prejudice. She’s the narrator in this memoir, sharing her experiences truthfully and the result is inspiring. To go through such darkness and grief only has result: reborn into the light.
This moving memoir will touch you in an emotional way and I highly recommend it! This is not just a memoir for the LGBTQ community but for all of humanity. Thank you, Bree, for being so brave in baring all so that we may understand what you went through and to show compassion to others who are going through it.
