Thief of Lies

Title: Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers #1)

Author: Brenda Drake

Genre: Young Adult, Urban Fantasy

Book Blurb:

New York Times Bestseller

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels-magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books-rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

My Review:

I always knew that libraries were magical places and in Thief of Lies, Brenda Drake makes all my dreams comes true. I’ve been wanting to read this book since months before the release (when the title was Library Jumpers). Last month, I finally had the chance to read it.

Gia and her friends are working on a summer project for school when she accidentally bumps into cute boy wearing a leather jacket. Curiosity gets the better of her and she follows him… right through a magical book to another library. Suddenly, Gia discovers a whole new world, one filled with magic and magical beings. The sexy boy’s name is Arik and he leads her on a wondrous adventure, filled with rival wizards/witches, sentinels, vampires and a deep dark family secret. Her feelings for Arik grow, no matter how much he tries to stay away from her. Then she meets her “fiancée” in the magical realm and sparks fly. Her heart wars with her head. Is she really the key to the end of the world or could that just be a typo? One thing’s for sure, she better learn magic quickly or else she could be dead before morning.

Thief of Lies is addictive, full of action scenes where magic rules all, not to mention a slow-burning romance between Arik and Gia. The world building Drake achieves is second to none. I mean, I wanted to transport in Gia’s place. The plot moves at a fast pace with several intriguing twists I didn’t see coming. Not all the characters survive and that’s the sad part. Gia’s past (who she is and what she must do) unfolds a little bit at a time so the reader discovers it as Gia does.

I can’t say enough good things about this book! If you love urban fantasy, please 1-click today. You’ll love the characters and the backstory, not to mention that there’s more to come in this series. I, for one, can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Favorite Character/Quote: Arik. I love how protective he is of her from the very beginning. They have an instant attraction in the Boston library and while some readers/reviewers despise instant attraction, I really don’t mind. Arik connects with Gia on so many levels and when he tries to distance himself from her, he finds it most difficult. He’s a strong character and takes over scenes but I like that in my hero.

My Rating:  5 stars

Author Biography:

Brenda Drake is a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction. She grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical. When she’s not writing or hanging out with her family, she haunts libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or reads someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).
