Confession: I Broke Two Cardinal Writing Rules and I’m Glad #ASMSG #IARTG #Paranormal

pen-1584240_1280

I admit it, guilty as charged. My name is Mrs. N, one-half of the bestselling N. N. Light, and I broke the first rule in writing: never write about yourself or real life in a novel. The truth is I am happy I did both and here’s why. I was inspired to write Princess of the Light through a chance encounter with a homeless man.

portrait-2443127_640

I first got the idea for our debut novel one chilly morning back in 2012. It was a cold wintry morning and I was walking to the grocery store. I happened to look across the street and what I saw made me stop in my tracks. A homeless man was sitting on a curb next to the gas station. He wasn’t holding a sign or asking for money. His eyes were closed and his head was uplifted to the sky. There was such a contented and happy look in his weathered face. It took my breath away.

I wondered how he became homeless and if there was some way I could help him. I continued on with my day but my thoughts were filled with him and his plight. Who is he? Could I help him?

As the days and months passed, I saw him every day. He kept to himself and never begged for money. Instead, he walked the length of our town. Yes, he walked the length of the town. Every time I saw him, I nodded and said good morning. The simple act of kindness didn’t seem like a big deal to me but to him, it was as if I had given him the sun. I started leaving food and clothing for him. The more kindness I showed, the happier he appeared.

Rule #1: Never write about real life in fiction

I knew in my heart it was my calling to tell his story. He isn’t some nameless face; he’s someone’s son, brother, grandson, uncle, father, husband, and/or friend. If I had the power, I would be his protector and free him from the darkness keeping him prisoner. He would no longer be the forgotten man.

I made a promise to myself to donate part of the proceeds to food banks if our book got published. I am keeping my promise and through our marketing, people are donating to food banks on their own.

My motto for our book and for my life is spread the Light. It doesn’t matter to me what your spiritual beliefs are for everyone has the Light inside them. Spreading the Light comes in many forms but it starts with being kind.

Rule #2: Never write about yourself, especially when it comes to love and romance.

I wrote about my own love story with Mr. N. Gasp! I know you’re in shock and hoping I brought smelling salts. Stick with me for a moment and let me explain. The romantic story between Mary and Joe is simply based on my own love story.

I met Mr. N back in 2001. We actually met online in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer yahoo group and hit it off right away. We both adore Buffy and it was one of many things we had in common. We started out as friends but soon it blossomed into love. Through some uphill battles and insecurities on my part, I broke his heart not once but twice. It pains me to admit it but the second time around, I was truly cruel.

I thought it was over and I had moved on. I joined another Buffy yahoo group in 2003 and as fate would have it, Mr. N was there. Is the Universe trying to tell me something? He and I got to talking one night off-list. I asked for forgiveness and he granted it. We took it turtle-slow and before I knew what happened, I was in love with him. I mean, true love (the hills are alive with the sound of music) and my walls came tumbling down.

POL wedding

Long story short, I moved up north and married him in 2004. A few weeks ago, we celebrated our thirteenth wedding anniversary. Every day, I thank my lucky stars he forgave me and loves me unconditionally. This is my love story and every time I tell it (or Mr. N tells it), people swoon and say how utterly romantic it is. So I incorporated our love story into Princess of the Light.

Giving the rules a heave-ho allows writers the freedom to create irresistible stories.

Sometimes breaking the rules is needed to tell a really great story. I hope you will see how weaving real life with fantasy makes for an irresistible book. More writers should rebel like me and add dashes of real life into their stories.

Excerpt:

Marie furrowed her brow and softly interrupted, “André is the Walking Man?”

I looked at Marie and asked, “You’ve heard of him?”

Marie nodded. “Of course. He is a staple of the Downtown area. There are a few groups I’m affiliated with that hand out food and clothing to those in need. He never comes to these events so I leave them by the area where he sleeps.” She paused, thoughtfully. “I just can’t believe that it is André.”

Joe cleared his throat and looked at his father. “What happened to André?”

Alfred sighed and after a moment said, “It really was the fault of that witch he was married to. She and her family treated him horribly. She was a gold digger and all she cared about was money and the prestige.”

Marie interrupted Alfred by saying, “I remember her. She was so mean to André and all she cared about was looking rich. Wealth is a gift—she just wanted it for a toy. She treated André so badly… and his mother-in-law was the worst. She would put him down all the time. In front of other people, no less.”

Alfred continued, “André was a good man and worked hard. He was working on a big project for the city. He worked night and day on the project and told me it was going to put Golden Lake on the map.

“He absolutely adored his daughter, too. I remember that clearly. She was his everything.” Alfred paused, apparently lost in his thoughts. With a sigh he said, “There was a scandal with the project, though, and André got fired. Soon after, Dara left him, took Katherine with her and André fell apart. He started drinking heavily and, without his daughter, his life fell apart.”

Joe looked at me and I fought to keep from throwing my hand over my mouth. There was purple fire in his eyes and I felt his anger. I already knew the story of André and I tried to smile at him.

I smelled burning flesh. Joe flashed in full armor fighting demons with a golden sword.

I gasped at the vision and brought my hand to my chest in shock feeling the key necklace, before I could stop the physical reaction. The necklace weighed heavily as did my heart. He would be fighting at my side soon.

Marie asked, “Are you okay, dear?”

Joe turned to look at his mother. He nodded and only said, “I never knew any of this.”

Alfred continued, “I am sorry, son, but you asked for the truth. This is what I know. André was sleeping at the office and drinking all the time. He was supposed to give a presentation to a client and was drunk. He got into a scuffle with his boss and rumor has it, André punched him.”

I feigned shock and said, “Oh my!”

Than is to blame. I don’t know how I know or what happened but I vow to the Lord that I will make Than pay, thought Joe.

I choked and almost spit out my drink. I just heard Joe’s thoughts! I had to set him straight and right away.

I cleared my throat and said awkwardly, “Joe, I think I left something in the car.”

Joe looked at me with eyebrows raised. “Excuse me, we’ll be right back,” I said with a smile.

I walked outside and knew that Joe was right behind me. When I reached the car, I whirled and said in a stern tone, “Are you trying to get yourself killed?”

Joe stopped mid-step and said, “What are you talking about, Mary?”

I ran into his arms and whispered, “You cannot take on Than by yourself! I heard your thoughts in there. Now, I don’t know how you know that it was Than who drove André to punching his boss but please promise me that you will not get revenge.”

I paused to catch my breath and remembered what Gabriel told me. “Joe, in order to defeat the darkness and not become dark ourselves, we need to have a pure heart. We are filled with the Light and our motives must always be to speak the Truth and spread the Light.”

Joe took several deep breaths while he held me. He stroked my hair and whispered, “I’m sorry, my angel. I didn’t mean to frighten you and you are right. It was just a momentary thought.”

I lifted my head and locked eyes with Joe. Tears filled my eyes but I was determined. I bit at my top lip and then whispered, “Promise me you won’t put yourself in harm’s way.” Hot tears spilled down my cheeks.

Joe wiped at them and said in a deep, reassuring tone, “I promise, Mary. I promise I won’t be a hothead and I won’t be rash.” Then, he laid his forehead on mine and whispered, “Please don’t cry, darling. Please.”

I nodded and whispered, “I would die if I lost you. Than will use you to try to get to me. You are my love, my everything.” My voice cracked. “I would die if I lost you,” I repeated.

Joe shook my shoulders a little and looked deep into my eyes. “Listen to me, Mary, you will never lose me! Do you hear me? I am by your side now and forever.”

Overcome with emotion, Joe kissed me.

What if You Were Chosen, Would You Believe the Angel and Act? #POTL #books #paranormal

potlbanner

What if you woke up one morning and realized that you were the chosen Princess of the Light?

What would you do?  Would you quit your job and contact every religious leader in the world and announce your arrival?  Would you keep it quiet and not tell anyone?

Hello, my name is Mary and I am just like you.  A normal person who God happened to choose to help the world.  I was skeptical at first but you can’t deny a miracle when you witness it.

I don’t expect you to believe me.  But just you wait and see…

Excerpt:

Out of the corner of my eye I noticed my skin glowing. What on earth? Gasping and looking around, I wondered if anyone else could see the purplish glow.

“Princess?” Gabriel’s voice echoed in my head.

When I turned around and saw Gabriel behind me, I smiled. “I’m glowing,” I exclaimed happily, then asked, “Is that normal? Can others see my glow?” I added in a whisper.

“Princess, you’ll find that people will see you in many different ways. Most will be drawn to you—not knowing why—and you’ll help them see the Light.”

I nodded in understanding. Then it dawned on me that Gabriel was wearing clothes—a plain, grey hoodie and blue jeans. Where was his heavenly attire and wings?

Gabriel chuckled. “I can appear human when the moment arises.” Wait. He can read my thoughts?

I wondered what else he’d heard. So, he could appear however he wished and he could read my thoughts… Great.

I know this is coming at you fast, but please don’t be afraid. You’ll quickly adjust, and soon you won’t even think about it. I heard Gabriel’s words in my head, but his mouth remained in a kind smile.

“You met André earlier.” Gabriel said, aloud this time, getting right to the point.

I nodded. “Yes.”

“André’s story is a sad one. Let this be your first task as the Princess of the Light: Help André.”

“How can I help?” He seemed to shun people and any contact whatsoever.

“You will, because it’s His will. Do you doubt?” Gabriel paused. “I will be near you at all times,” he reassured me.

I shook my head. “I don’t doubt. It’s just… I don’t know how I can help.” Truthfully, there was more to it than even that. What if I failed? What if I couldn’t help André because of my own short comings?

I sighed.

Gabriel looked at me and simply smiled. “Remember you carry the Light. It is in you to do. But first you have to believe. Do you?”

He was asking the faith question. I certainly believed in the Lord and His magnificent power. “Yes,” I said. “I have faith and I trust in God. With you as my guide and the Lord leading me, I can do it.” Now, if only I believed that last part.

“Concentrate on the Light within you and imagine your Light is easing his pain,” he said. Gabriel then turned me back toward to the sidewalk and pointed down a little ways.

I guess we weren’t going to have a discussion first. We were just going to get started.

About five hundred yards away, the Walking Man—André, I corrected myself—was on the sidewalk. He appeared to be talking to himself.

What should I do?

Gabriel’s voice echoed back in my head, The Light in you can heal. It can take away darkness. It reveals Truth. Truth cannot be destroyed. Your enemy may twist it, hide it under a blanket of darkness, and even laugh at it. But he cannot destroy it.

I nodded, trying to create a mantra in my head: I’m the Princess of the Light. I’m the Carrier of the Light, and Light reveals Truth. I can do this. I concentrated hard on the Walking Man, lifted my arm and prayed, Let the Light enter André and ease his suffering.

Suddenly, what looked like purple lightning bolts shot out of my palm and seemed to enter his chest. Whoa, what was that?

I spun around to ask Gabriel, but he was gone.

Let’s Talk #Writing and What It Takes to be a Writer! #amwriting #ASMSG #IARTG

writing writers

People ask me all the time how to write.  I think it must be one of those secret desires in people, to know how books get written.  People are fascinated with it and stare at me like I’m their favorite candy.

The truth is that writing is different for everyone.  It’s a very personal experience.  Ever since I was little, I’ve been writing.  By the time I was in high school, I had filled several journals, diaries and notebooks. Stories, poems, prose all poured out of me.  It’s like a tick, only with ink.

I write because I have to.  If I don’t write, my body will start to twitch and the voices will just consume me.  Don’t get me wrong, I love to write and I feel so blessed by this gift.  The voices, or characters as I call them in polite society, speak to me and I write them down.  Many times, more than one character vies for my attention (think Real Housewives but in my brain).

When I met the Walking Man (the homeless man who inspired Princess of the Light), I knew that it was up to me to tell his story.  He was my daily inspiration and when I didn’t feel like writing, all I had to do was think of him out in the cold.  The words just flowed out of me.

Princess of the Light is published and next month celebrates its third book birthday.  Does that mean that the voices stop? No way! They are even louder and body-slamming each other for my attention. They want their five minutes in the spotlight in future books.  I’m writing book two as fast as I can but it’s not fast enough for Than, head demon. He wants his revenge and nothing will stop him… or so he thinks.

I write because I love it.  I love seeing people respond to my writing.  I love making a difference and spreading the Light.  I love inspiring others.

I write, most of all, for my survival.  I need to write like I need oxygen to breathe.  It is a part of my body, mind and soul.  Without writing, I am not quite myself.

If you have a story begging to be told, get writing! You may be like me and your very survival may depend on it!

Excerpt:

I sunk into the water, and let the suds and scent of lavender engulf me.  The stress of the day finally began to melt away.

My body jolted.

I was in the middle of the desert. There were grass huts and women with hajjis walking quickly around me. Something whizzed past my ear, and a deafening explosion rocked me off my feet. I instinctively curled my body in a fetal position.

I listened for the screams to start, but it was eerily silent. I glanced around, but all I saw was water.

I was still in the bath. What had just happened? Was that a vision? Had I fallen asleep?

My headache was a dull thud now.

A knock on the washroom door made me gasp. I sat upright in the tub and heard my roommate, Amber, call in, “Mary, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good. Just must have fallen asleep.”

“Hey, Amber, what time is it?” I looked down at my pruney fingers and wondered how long I was in the tub.

Amber said, “It’s five thirty.”

I leaned forward and turned on the hot water. The bath water had gotten cold while I had drifted off.

I leaned back as the warm water ran over my toes and closed my eyes, wondering what I should wear tonight. I wanted to look beautiful for Joe. I began to picture every outfit in my closet, and tried to imagine his reaction to it.

A shiver ran down my back and I faintly hear the water splash over the edge.

I opened my eyes and tried to scream. All that came out was a reverse gasp, and I pulled my towel in to cover my body.

A small child was in the tub with me. He couldn’t be older than five. Blood was running down his face, and his body was covered in sand mixed with congealing blood. He was clinging to my towel, and I didn’t know whether to let go of it or yank it back from him. His dark hair was wet with fresh blood. My heart filled with sadness and I quit trying to scream.

As I clung to my own towel, I didn’t know what was happening or what I should do.

The little boy raised his head and more sadness poured into my heart. His eyes were dark pools of grief and despair. They pleaded with me, begging me to help.

How? I mouthed silently.

I jumped when he began to move slowly toward me. He lifted one arm and spoke in a language I didn’t recognize. I knew I didn’t know exactly what his words meant, but I knew what he was saying: He was hurt and needed help.

The closer he came, the more my fear eased and the pain increased. He reached for my arm. His hand was bloodied, and it sent a jolt of electricity and agony throughout my body. I tried to pull away, but his grip was locked on my arm. His eyes turned black and murky, and a voice not his own spoke.

“Princess, help my people,” it said.

I shook my head.

“Let go!” I tried to scream again.

The little boy disappeared, and I jumped out of the bathtub, wet towel still wrapped around my body, and crumbled to the floor. The blood was smeared all around me, and I looked at my arm. The blood was still there, too.

I whimpered, scrubbed at my arm until it was raw, and yet I could still see the blood.

If You Liked #WonderWoman, You’ll Love Princess of the Light! #books #superhero #IARTG #ASMSG

Wonder Woman movie premiered over the weekend and women everywhere were inspired. Little girls came out of the movie theatres fired up and posing like Wonder Woman while grown women’s faces lit with an inner light I haven’t seen since Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on television back in the 1990’s. Women are clamoring for strong, female superheroes and it’s about time Hollywood responds.

Three years ago, we published Princess of the Light. Mary is just your everyday woman working in a bookstore, living her life, until archangel Gabriel announces she’s the Princess of the Light. Her purpose is to be the champion for the downtrodden and helpless. Sounds familiar, right?

We know we’re biased but we think fans of Wonder Woman will also love Princess of the Light. Here’s where you can buy your copy:

Here’s the description:

Mary’s the Princess of the Light but her only hope is to make a pact with her enemy.

Mary Miller receives a startling visitation from Gabriel, the Messenger of God. The Archangel reveals an astounding truth–Mary is the Princess of the Light and even more amazing, her destiny is to battle Lucifer’s army of demons and restore the balance of good and evil on Earth. It’s getting harder to fulfill her new role and keep her identity secret while juggling her personal life, and when Than, Lucifer’s second in command, amps up the attacks on her, she knows she needs help.

Joe Deacons is everything she’s ever wanted in a man. And as providence would have it, in a moment of great need, he’s the Warrior of Light–the one who can help her defeat the forces of darkness.

Not so simple when they confront Lisbeth, a demon hell-bent on usurping Than and Lucifer himself.  When Lisbeth wages war and several innocent people die, Mary must form an alliance with her enemy in order to destroy her.  But will this be a grave error or the choice that saves their world?

Here’s a scene to whet your appetite:

I had almost reached the pathway when I felt an ice-cold hand push me hard from behind. Falling forward and losing my footing, I put my arms forward to brace my fall. I landed with a thud and had scraped my hands and knees.

A sinister laugh from behind sent a chill down my spine.

I dusted myself off, stood up quickly and whirled to see the same hooded man that I saw earlier. Fear danced across my heart but I stood my ground.

The hooded man walked in a circle around me, all the while laughing in his low evil tone. This must be what a dying animal feels like when a vulture shows up before the life has actually slipped away.

Little girl, just what do you think you are doing?” My fear quickly changed to annoyance. This was the second time he called me little girl.

I’m a woman, not a little girl. I spent my whole life being told by far too many people that I was a girl and couldn’t do this or that. I had proved them all wrong, and now this evil… whatever he was, would be no different. I cocked my head to one side and said icily, “I am walking, sir. What are you doing, trying to make me dizzy?”

The hooded man stopped, raised an eyebrow and narrowed his eyes.

“I told you to leave him be,” He continued while I had his attention. “I made myself perfectly clear that you are to stay away.”

I mockingly raised an eyebrow in return and smiled to myself. He seemed perturbed that his glaring wasn’t working on me. I would use that to my advantage while I still had my wits about me.

“Do you make it a habit of pushing little girls around?” I sarcastically emphasized the disrespectful word choice. I wanted to egg him on and get him to reveal his true purpose.

It worked.

His brow furrowed as if he was trying to decide what to say or do next. “I push a lot of people around. I’m a demon, little girl.” He leered at me. No joke. As soon as the words were out of his mouth, I realized I had known that somewhere deep down from the first moment I noticed him.

“What’s your point? That you are a meaner, uglier class of bully?” I liked where this was going. If I used my senses, I could know his move before he made it. I guess my mother was right about the years of experience I had gotten from the debate club—I really could banter with the best of them.

“Now, listen here, we’re getting off-track.” He took a step closer. “Stay away from my mark! You don’t understand a thing. You think you’re the Princess… whatever that means.” He curled his lip and snarled.

“Who is your mark, that nice homeless man?” I pointed to in the direction of the trees and took a step closer. “Be very careful, demon. It’s not my name you should fear, but that of who gives me strength.” My voice was suddenly powerful and he took a step back.

“Yes. That Walking Man belongs to me and you’re interfering.”

I thought back to how the Light and darkness seemed to ebb and surge within André earlier. I still had a lot to learn, but I knew instinctively that a person’s soul was the true battleground of good and evil.

This man—the creature—in front of me was evil. Just as sure as I was of that, I was sure that I was, in fact, the Princess of the Light.

Light versus darkness… and André’s soul was the one at stake, not just mine.

“I’m where I’m supposed to be, according to the Light.” I stared him down. “He does not belong to you or me. This is the true battle.” I paused. “So, do you feel lucky?” I silently chuckled at the iconic Hollywood line. He didn’t seem to make the connection.

He shook his head and smirked. “Mary, I don’t want to fight you. I’m just trying to help you understand.” His silky voice tickled my ears but I wasn’t fooled by his attempt.

Maybe if I play along, he would reveal more, I reasoned and nodded for him to continue.

“There are things that you don’t know about your power and what’s in store.” He coyly looked at me like he was sharing a secret. “We’re actually on the same team. I’m just trying to help him see his error of the path he has chosen and to correct him.”

I saw right through his seduction and saw he wanted to deceive me. “So, let me get this straight… you’re not fighting me but you’re part of the Light? Is that it?”

His smile faltered, but he nodded anyway. “We’re on the same team, trying to help this poor man.”

“Well, then I think it’s time we prayed for him. Don’t you think?” I grinned as the hooded man paled. I sensed his fear and felt certain that the one thing demons could not do was pray. Praying would mean either giving in to the Light or, at the very least, having to face it. Since, they fear the Light most of all, I couldn’t see how that would be a viable option if he wasn’t telling the truth about his intentions.

Just as I expected, his smile disappeared as he realized I saw through him. His black eyes flashed with anger. “You think you have bested me, little girl. Not quite.”

He raised his arm with his palm aimed at me and spoke in what could only have been ancient language—Aramaic?

My eyes widened as a whirlwind of black smoke or dust flew out of his palm. So enamored with the sight, I almost didn’t realize it was headed straight for me. Without thinking, I lifted my palm to block the swirling vortex. Purple arrows flew out of my palm and destroyed the tornado.

Cool, I thought. I had destroyed whatever it was and glared at the hooded man. He was frozen as his—whatever it was—disappeared.

“Is that the best you’ve got for me, little evil boy?” I said, playing on his own mocking word choice. Then, I raised both of my palms in a defensive stance.

“You will regret this day, girl!” He lifted both arms up and began chanting again.

I took the opportunity to see if I could best him. The Light didn’t need incantations—its power was in its own source. I lifted my head and commanded, “Light, teach this evil little boy who I am!” Bolts of purple light immediately flew out of my palms and shot through the hooded man like swords of Light.

The hooded man screamed in pure agony and dropped his arms. He clutched at his stomach and tried to pull out the bolts of Light. As his hands touched the Light, they disintegrated into black dust. He screamed louder and louder until he was nothing but dust himself.

I looked on with near-disbelief as the Light had vaporized him. Yet, I could still sense him nearby and said with confidence, “Score one for the little girl.” I laughed and added as much for my benefit as for his, “That was lesson one.”

Excerpt:

The whole way to Ronnie’s restaurant, I stared out the window and watched the scenery zoom by while I let my mind try to untangle what was going on. What had Gabriel meant? I sighed and then gritted my teeth. What was Lisbeth’s ultimate goal in all of this? What was everyone trying to gain?

I could feel the anger rise up in my chest and it took all of my strength to calm myself. I was the carrier of the Light and I must focus on the Truth. I knew that if I concentrated solely on Lisbeth, the Light would turn to darkness. I would be no better than a demon.

I closed my eyes and concentrated on the purple Light within me. Truth. Waves of Light seemed to pour out all over my skin. My heart was at peace. Opening my eyes, I noticed Joe staring at me.

“I am sorry that I have been quiet,” I said.

Joe watched the traffic for a while and then said, “Seemed like you needed to figure things out.” Joe paused. “Have you?”

I simply smiled in response.

The restaurant was only about two miles away and we could see the water in the distance.

A shiver ran up my spine as I saw smoke coming from the water. “Is someone having a bonfire?” I asked Joe, trying to sound casual.

I stared hard at the smoke and tried to shake off the uneasy feeling seizing my heart.

Suddenly, the darkness was lit by a huge red orange fireball and a building exploded. I screamed and Joe slammed on the brakes. Flames licked up into the sky, as we sat helplessly watching.

Soon, a litany of emergency vehicles veered around us to the scene of the explosion. Joe followed them.

I gripped the dashboard of the car tightly as screams of the victims echoed all around me. I closed my eyes and saw the flames burn through flesh.

The Bluefin Restaurant was on fire. The image of the little boy flashed before me, and I suddenly felt as powerless as I had so many months ago.

When we got out of the car, the vision we both saw months ago was reality. There was a gaping hole where the back kitchen had been. Flames blazed against, out, and over the front windows. The only place not afire was the wreckage that had been the kitchen.

Broken glass and building debris were everywhere. Charred-looking bodies were strewn all around—some alive and walking, others just empty shells.

Despair. Helplessness. Evil. The screaming filled my head.

Joe grabbed me and pulled me into his arms.

Mary, open your eyes! What are you saying?”

I was the one screaming. I let the tears fall as I whispered, “I have failed.”

Joe wiped my cheeks and shook his head.

“No! Mary, you have not failed. We need to help these people. Do you hear me? Use your Light and help these poor souls.”

Writing #InspirationalRomance With Heart Without Preaching Religion #99cents #FridayReads

christmas-wish-potl

“To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.” – Herman Melville

When I sat down to write, Princess of the Light, I never intended on writing inspirational romance. I had just had a moving encounter with a homeless man and had all these thoughts running around in my head. I had to get them down on paper before they floated out of my head. Wait, I should probably start at the beginning.

Five years ago, I was out for my morning walk and I saw a homeless man sitting in front of a gas station. I looked at him, head uplifted to the sun smiling, and wondered what his story was. Why was he smiling? There was such a peace in his weathered face, I stopped walking and openly stared.  I watched him for a while and knew he was different from other homeless people.  He did not ask for money or hold up a sign. He kept to himself and avoided contact.

A voice suddenly entered my head, “What if you could help him? Would you? What if you were chosen to help him and others like him?”

I searched my heart and after a moment, I replied aloud, “Yes, I would.”

“This is what you were called to do.” The voice echoed in my heart.

I went home that very day and started writing. This simple encounter changed my life forever and inspired me to write Princess of the Light, an inspiring paranormal romance.

Writing inspirational romance can be tricky. I must admit I had some difficulty in the beginning. I wanted to inspire people to show kindness to people in their own city, especially those who are less fortunate and in need of food. I wanted to bring to light the hunger epidemic going on in America and Canada, two of the richest countries in the world. Nevertheless, I didn’t want to sound preachy.

The first thing I did was create a story of a woman who is destined to help someone like the homeless man I met. I wanted her to be strong and able to fight off the real and imagined demons tormenting a homeless man. Everyone likes a hero/heroine to root for and I made her female so I could relate to her.

The second thing I did was map out the homeless man and his story. I gave him a name and created a heart-breaking backstory for him. His story arc had to center on redemption and forgiveness, something everyone could relate.

The third thing I did was to write an edge of your seat novel with plenty of action. The story has action, adventure, romance, obstacles, battles, twists and turns. I wanted the reader to get lost in the story, not realizing they are being inspired.

Here are some writing tips I offer to writing inspirational romance:

  • Weave universal themes throughout your plot. You can be inspirational and reach a broader audience if you are universal. Every religion has many of the same morals and tenants to live by. Instead of mentioning specific religious names, use something more general. The main theme to Princess of the Light is Light versus Darkness. I use the term Light to convey spiritual goodness in a universal way. It does not matter what your spiritual belief is, you can relate to good versus evil.

  • Use everyday language. Being inspirational does not mean you have to sound intellectual or high and mighty. I have found when I write in modern English, I can reach more people than by using formal English.

  • Create real characters. I know this sounds like a no-brainer but stick with me for a minute. Creating characters who are human with flaws have a much bigger impact than having perfect-syndrome characters. Remember, you are trying to reach people. If the reader cannot relate to the main characters, they will not hear the message. They will scoff and mutter how that would never happen. Avoid this roadblock by putting your characters in a real situation and have them react in a natural way.

  • Consider donating part of the proceeds to a charity related to your book. Part of the proceeds of my book go directly to food banks and it’s something every reader can get behind. One of my characters is a homeless man and he relies on food banks. Homeless people all over the world need our help and when readers buy my book, they are helping those in need.

  • Never talk down to people. I cannot stress this enough, when writing inspirational, do not talk down to people. For as long as I can remember, I hated reading books where they preached at me about what I was doing wrong. Often, you can have a greater impact if you are on the same level as your reader. Use yourself as an example or if you are writing fiction, show your main character learning a valuable lesson.

  • Concentrate on the emotional arcs in your plot. Characters and circumstances inspire readers so let that be your focus. Ramp up the emotions in your reader by having your characters go through something. Part of my main character’s background is the emotional scarring from her father’s sudden death. It shapes who she is as a woman and explains her protectiveness over the Walking Man when battling the demons.

  • When writing non-fiction, be sure to do your research. With the birth of Wikipedia and Google, anyone can find out the truth about anything. Be historically accurate and be sure to give proper credentials.  There is nothing worse than reading about Joan of Arc and the weapon she uses isn’t invented for one hundred years after her death.

  • When writing a tell-all memoir, please consider changing the names to protect the innocent. We all have family skeletons, out of courtesy to your family while still being truthful, do the reader a favor, and change the names. Have some fun with it.  You will still be able to tell your story and inspire others; you just do not have to out your family to the world.

  • Consider using the journal/diary format for your story. I love the feel and intimacy of reading an inspirational diary. Even if it is fiction, this is a terrific way to tell your story. Everyone loves reading a diary and it draws the reader into the head of the main character so effectively.

  • Let the story tell itself. You have a story burning in your heart and the worst thing you can do is to get in the way of the story. Unleash the characters and let them use you to tell their story. Free yourself of your insecurities and fears. Do not worry if it is a good story or if you are a good writer. You are primarily a storyteller. Let the story be front and center; the rest of the details will work themselves out.

Writing inspiration is not complicated and anyone can do it. The key to writing a successful inspirational story without preaching is reaching people on an emotional level and showing them they can make a difference in their own corner of the world. Helping others is a characteristic inherent in every human being as is spreading the Light.

Princess of the Light: A Success Story and a Sale! #POTL #99cents #TuesdayBookBlog

potlbanner

The story behind Princess of the Light is one that fascinates people and I never get tired talking about it.  Simply put, a homeless man in our town inspired us to write Princess of the Light.  I don’t know his name and I have moved to a different area of town so I don’t see him every day.  I call him the Walking Man because that is exactly what he does.  He doesn’t beg for money or hold up a sign.  He walks the length of the town I live in.

The first time I saw him I literally stopped in my tracks.  There was something about him that made me pause.  Maybe it was the fact that it was the middle of winter and here he was sitting on the curb smiling up at the sun.  He didn’t have a care in the world and the heat of the sun’s rays on his weathered face gave him joy.

I wondered who he was and what his story was.  He was someone’s son, brother, father, uncle.  What happened in his life to bring him to this point?

I went about my day but my thoughts were filled with questions about him.  Could I help him?  What if I had the power to help him?

The seed started growing and Princess of the Light was born.  As the days went by and I observed the Walking Man, I started showing him kindness.  I smiled and said good morning.  I left food, blankets and clothing for him.  With every action, I started to notice a change in him.  It was like he was no longer the forgotten man; he mattered.

So what’s the success story, you may be asking yourself?

The Walking Man is no longer homeless. Through your support of N. N. Light’s website and buying our books, we took that money, donated it to food banks and local homeless charities. We prayed every day for him and spread awareness about his plight. We supported our local government who built an apartment complex to get the homeless off the street. The Walking Man, we’re thrilled to announce, is living in an apartment and a contributing member of our community once again. He’s healthy, happy and the living embodiment of Light. Such a miracle and perfect for this time of the year.

With Easter, Passover and Spring right around the corner, I want to share this message of hope and rebirth with you. It’s never too late. YOU can make a difference and change your little corner of the world.

Spreading the Light is more than a fun catch phrase; it can be a reality.  Every town, city and country has people like the Walking Man.  They’re forgotten by society and the governments.  They’re in the dark.  Let’s spread our Light around the world and make these people matter.

Get your copy of Princess of the Light today and 100% of the proceeds go to help the homeless. Let’s create more success stories…

Title: Princess of the Light

Author: N. N. Light

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Supernatural, Spiritual Romance

Tagline:

Mary’s the Princess of the Light but her only hope is to make a pact with her enemy.

Blurb:

Excerpt:

“Can I help you with something, sir?” The woman’s voice quivered slightly and she leaned a little, as if she suddenly needed the wall for support.

Whoa, I couldn’t help but think. I frankly felt like a moth to the flame. All I wanted to do was have a reason to get closer to her. The fact that her eyes seemed to shine with an actual light didn’t help matters. I had never felt such an automatic attraction before and I wanted to lean closer and see what was going on with her eyes.

She was either looking at me like I was the only man in the world—and quite possibly the sexiest one—or else my open gawking had freaked her out. Either way, I couldn’t have told her which it was, because my mouth was dry as a cotton ball container.

“Yes,” I managed to rasp to her. “Where is your Architecture section?”

“Are you looking for anything in particular?” Yes. You, I wanted to say. “I could look to see if it is in stock.” Oh. Are there more of you somewhere?

The sound of her voice was starting to make my heart pound. She had an earthly beauty about her. There was nothing extraordinary in her features, yet something about her just seemed to glow.

I felt my breath quicken. Joe, what’s the matter with you? Get a grip. You’ve seen girls before.

I shook my head to clear my thoughts without worrying what I looked like and said, “Please forgive my manners, but what is your name?”

“Mary.” That just became my favorite name.

“I’m very pleased to meet you,” I said as I extended my hand to her. “I’m Joseph. Please call me Joe.”

She hesitated for a moment before she shook my hand. Electricity bolted up my arm that I wasn’t prepared for. I wondered if she could hear my heart beating. Pretty sure these emotions weren’t winning me any bro-code points.

Her face flushed and her eyes brightened with interest. Let go of her hand, Joe, I tried to coach myself. If I didn’t let go of it soon, I might never be able to.

“I Felt Very Good After Reading Princess of the Light” New 5* Review #ASMSG #IARTG #Books

potlbanner

A brand new review of Princess of the Light has popped up on Amazon and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Take a moment and read this comprehensive review:

“Granted I am not a usual reader of this type of book. But if anything has the word paranormal attached to it, I obsessively give it the once over. And in this case, I’m glad I did. I was attracted to the cover of this book when it first popped up in my “People who brought this book also brought this” list. I was actually on the lookout for something new and different to read, so I took a chance and ordered a copy. Admittedly, it took a little bit to get into it, as I am not a big romance reader, but when the action starts, and it doesn’t take too long for that to happen, hold on to your hat, or in this case, your Halo!

Good versus evil, fallen angels, vengeful demons and devils causing mayhem and death here on earth and then fighting humans transformed into angelic warriors, Mary Miller, AKA, the Princess of the Light and her love interest, Joe Deacons. Plus, the, or rather THE Angel Gabriel is also a central character in this story. He acts as both mentor and spiritual guide to Mary and Joe who have been chosen to battle Satan’s dark forces. They do this through the power of prayer and sword and sorcery type weapons. There are also plenty of twists and turns in the story to keep you guessing, including an unlikely alliance that only adds more intrigue leading up to the final sword swinging, axe wielding, purple flame, demon burning battle. And I’m not going to reveal the surprise ending, but it adds a nice touch.

There are some minor flaws in the continuity here and there, but nothing that interferes with the narrative. Overall, I felt very good after reading The Princess of the Light. Sort of the same feeling one gets from watching a Hallmark Channel Movie. Besides being a Paranormal Romance, I would also consider it to be a fine example of modern Christen literature as well. Out of curiosity, I visited the Author’s website to find out more about them and was pleased to learn that they donate a portion of all their sales to their local food bank through an endowment. Yet another good reason to feel good about this book.

Enjoy!” — Reviewer Bernieo from Amazon

New Review for Princess of the Light by @NNP_W_Light and We’re Thrilled! #ASMSG #IARTG #books

potlbanner

Don’t you love surprises?

We woke up this morning to find a thorough, in-depth book review by an author we respect (Lisabet Sarai).

First, a little background story. When Princess of the Light was first published in 2014, we tried hard to get noticed. We went onto as many blogs as possible and connected with several authors. One of them was Lisabet Sarai. She was so gracious and allowed us to share with her readers the story behind our writing Princess of the Light. As a thank you, we gave her a copy of our book.

Fast forward two years: Lisabet offered to host us while we had Princess of the Light on sale for 99 cents last month. She mentioned she still hadn’t had a chance to read Princess of the Light. We didn’t think anything of it because we know how busy she is working full-time and being a full-time author and editor.

So imagine our surprise when we discovered her review appear in our Twitter feed. Here’s the link and we have copied her review below:

Princess of the Light by N.N. Light
Smashwords, 2014
Imagine you’re a normal young woman, working at a bookstore, hanging out with your friends, and struggling to recover from the tragic death of your dad. Then one day you get a visit from the angel Gabriel. Yes, that Gabriel—the right hand of God. The angel reveals that you are Princess of the Light, gifted with the power to uplift and heal the broken and the hopeless, and to destroy demons. He tells you that you’ve been chosen to save humanity from the forces of evil. Most especially, you’ve been given the task of redeeming one particular homeless man who has sunk deeply into darkness through no fault of his own.
What would you do? Would you think someone had dumped some sort of hallucinogen into your drinking water? Especially when you start having visions? Or would you follow your intuition and have faith in your destiny, no matter how unlikely it seemed? Mary Miller trusts the evidence of her senses and her heart and grows into her role as God’s warrior for good.
I’ve been wanting to read Princess of the Light ever since the author first dropped by my blog to promote it as a new release. Last week, while traveling, I finally got the chance.
This is a bold and engaging book with an important message. Love and compassion can make a real difference. Even when we see ourselves as weak and flawed, we have the power to improve the lives of others. When we share our Light, we brighten the world around us.
Furthermore, it’s not demons or devils that present the greatest challenge to our living compassionately, but our own fears and doubts. When Gabriel tells Mary to keep her heart pure, he’s not talking about the desire she feels for her soul mate Joe, but rather, the negative emotions that assail her: anger, frustration, feelings of inadequacy, exhaustion, and despair. Although Mary and Joe face external battles with Than, Lisbeth and their dark army, the true struggle happens within.
If you’re looking for a realistic paranormal romance, this isn’t the book for you.Princess of the Light is a fable. The book unfolds in the idyllic town of Golden Lake, as Mary gradually comes to understand her role and to take ownership of the power and responsibility she has somehow inherited. I don’t believe we are meant to take the various hellish denizens she encounters all that seriously. They’re merely externalizations of darker forces that twist and corrupt the town’s inhabitants—especially ambition, envy, the desire for wealth and the absence of hope.
Still, when Mary slips into a vision, the author makes you believe it’s all real. And the book doesn’t shy away from tragedy and heartbreak. Everyone’s life includes loss. The challenge is to hold to the truth and let your light shine despite your grief.
I just reread N.N. Light’s original post from 2014, and noticed that she and her husband are both Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans. Even before that, I’d seen some Buffy influence in the final cataclysmic battle where Mary and Joe struggle to defeat the formidable demon Lisbeth and her legions of the damned. Actually, I was a bit disappointed in this scene, which felt like something from a whack-a-mole video game. Mary wields an axe of Light, while Joe has a shining sword, but do they really need these weapons? Shouldn’t pure love be enough to vanquish their adversaries?
In any case, I enjoyed Princess of the Light. Its message isn’t new, but it never hurts to be reminded. We are all conduits for love, which flows through us to bless others.
By the way, N.N. Light is donating a portion of the proceeds from this book to her local food pantry. If you buy the book, you’ll be doing your little bit to bring light to the world.

Thank you, Lisabet, for getting Princess of the Light and our message behind it. We’re so grateful and we’re thrilled!

MRS N

Exclusive Interview: Lisbeth on Lisa Burton Radio #ASMSG #IARTG #paranormalromance

potlbanner

Looking for a good time? Oops, wrong audience…

My name is Lisbeth and I told MRS N to take the day off. Today, I’m running things and it’s about time. For far too long, it’s been all about the Princess of the Light and her hunky alpha male Warrior of the Light. They hog the spotlight with their donating to food banks and spreading kindness everywhere so I’m here to set the record straight. I’m your run of the mill succubus (sex demon for all you innocents out there) and when the opportunity came for me to make my mark and destroy the foretold princess, I jumped on it. Soon, I’ll be running not only Hell but the world. Who says you can’t have it all?

But when it came to telling my side of the story, N. N. Light’s  editor deleted most of the scenes. So disappointing, let me tell you. MRS N assures me the new edition, coming out next year, will have my point of view and background. But I couldn’t wait, so I contacted Lisa Burton for a radio interview. She agreed that my story needed to be told and today, it’s live on some website. Here’s the introduction:

“Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio, the show that interviews the characters you love. Today I’m in the studio with Lisbeth who is an actual demon from Hell.” Click here to read the whole transcript of this exclusive interview with yours truly Lisbeth:

Take a listen and then decide for yourself if I’m as wicked as the princess makes me out to be.

How To Know Which #WritingTips to Follow and Ignore #amwriting #TuesdayBookBlog #ASMSG

Peanuts Writing Advice

Writing advice/tips are everywhere.  Everyone is an expert, even Lucy from Peanuts.  How do you know what to follow and what to ignore?  The simple answer is to listen to your inner voice and to trust your instincts.  Let’s look at a few examples.

One of the most asked pieces of advice people ask is, “How do I become a writer,”.  In one camp there are the intellectual people.  They say that you must study grammar and writing via classes and workshops.  While I understand their concept, when it comes to creative writing (novel/prose/poetry) that logical approach doesn’t work.  William Shakespeare didn’t take classes at Oxford to become a writer.  He wrote his experiences and what he observed in Elizabethan times.

Another camp are what I call the free spirits.  I fall into this group and my simple answer is, “If you can write something down on paper and share it with others, you are a writer.”  Writers write.  You either are or you aren’t.  It’s not as complicated as people make it out to be.

schedule

“I never have time to write.”  This is a big issue for many writers and trust me, I understand.  I have struggled with this too and I can tell you that what works for me may not work for you.  Each writer’s life is different and each person has their own time perimeters.

I read an article a long time ago talking about writer’s block.  It showcased 20 writers and their helpful tips for overcoming writer’s block.  One of the tips really made me see writing in a whole new light.  She said, “I always tell my writing students to write 300 words every day.  It is basically a page and everyone has time to write one page.”

I thought about it and it soon became my writing goal.  I promised myself to write 300 words every day.  I put a sticky note up in my writer’s nook and looked at it every day.  I can tell you all that I was true to my word and kept that promise.  I wrote 300 words each and every day.  Some days I did more and some days I struggled to make those 300 words.  I did it and I felt so proud of myself.

Ask yourself, what word count would be appropriate for me?

Don’t say 1,000 words if you cannot do it.  Commit to a word count and make sure that it is not too lofty.  Don’t make it too easy for yourself, either.  This is a writing goal and it must propel you forward.

time management for writers

Time management is another key tip I learned from that article.  Being a writer is all about time management.  Many of us do have a day job, families and responsibilities.  Making time for writing can be hard but when you make it a priority, it becomes easy.  Schedule a block of your day/night in your time management planner and call it “writing”.  Tell your family/friends/roommates so that they know not to bother or interrupt you.

My writing time is in the afternoon from 1-4 pm.  I chose that time of the day to write because it works best for my life.  I shut off all the distractions and I concentrate on writing.

Writing advice is everywhere and it can be overwhelming.  Trust me, I’ve been there.

The best advice I can give you is to read everything out there, figure out what works for you and then trust your inner voice.  It will always guide you and never steer you wrong.

Remember the writing profession is constantly evolving.  Learn something new today.

#FridayBookRoundUp — 2nd Anniversary of Princess of the Light #FridayReads #99cents

POTL 2nd anniversary

Today’s a big day for us because it’s the second anniversary of Princess of the Light. Two years ago, we published our debut novel. The road to publication was rocky and filled with obstacles. But, like many writers before us, we kept going and made our dream a reality. In honor of this anniversary, we have drastically reduced the price of the Princess of the Light e-book at all retailers. 100% of the proceeds in September will be donated to our local food bank to feed the hungry children and families.

You (and your friends) are invited to our party and if we were all together in person, you’d see a banquet hall decorated with balloons and streamers (purple of course) along with gourmet food, cupcakes and refreshments. Instead, let’s have a party online (no calories) and celebrate! Who’s with us?

Excerpt:

“What about Than?”

Gabriel chuckled and said, “Than is another matter. Your vexing of his takeover of André’s soul caused him to call on Lisbeth. She is his second in command but he doesn’t know that she is going to try to take over. He made an error in calling on her. He knows it and I know it.”

“Oh did I?” Even before I saw him, I knew it was Than.

I let go of Joe’s hand and nodded to him. I wanted Joe to stay behind Gabriel, and thankfully, he either heard my thoughts or read my mind. He nodded in agreement and sent a thought of being careful back to me. I smiled reassuringly and patted his knee.

Then, I closed my eyes and imagined myself standing behind Than. A second later, that’s exactly where I was. This is cool, I thought, trying to stifle a giggle. Gabriel’s pleasure flickered across his eyes, and I finally felt like I was on my way to understanding what I was supposed to be doing.

Than mistook Gabriel’s pleasure for besting him and said, “Gabriel you have not won the day. She will still die and all your hopes will die with her. Don’t you understand that? There is no true hope in her.”

Gabriel narrowed his eyes. “We’ll see about that.”

I held out my hands near Than’s wrists and whispered silently formed the word rope. No sooner had my mouth closed around the end of the word when iridescent ropes slid out of my palms. Quickly, before he could figure out what was going on and react, I tied Than’s hands together tightly behind his back.

He grunted and whirled around to face me.

“Not safe to sneak up on those more powerful than you, little princess,” hissed Than. The ropes were digging in and sparks of Light were penetrating.

“I guess that must mean you aren’t as powerful as you thought,” I shot back. I could see the darkness of his evil warring against the Light of the ropes. His tortured grunts made me think the pain must have felt nothing short of slowly burning to death.

I stepped in front of Than and leaned very close to him. I didn’t touch him but I could feel his foul breath on my skin. My eyebrows arched upwards as I said, “I told you to stop calling me that.” Then I added more seriously, “If I were you, I’d get on with it.”

Than spun his body to look at Joe, and cried loudly, “So you are the chosen love of the little princess, are you?”

Joe narrowed his eyes and said nothing.

Than shrugged. “No matter. She will be the cause of your death, just as she will be the cause of the deaths of all others that you love, as well. You won’t be able to save her or them. All you’ll be able to do is cry. You’re nothing more than a young child hidden behind a grown up façade. You and I both know that.”

I realized that Than was just stalling, but Joe looked as if he were in pain. Something was being communicated that I couldn’t hear. Apparently striking one more blow, Than shifted his body to face me once again.

Joe closed his eyes and looked away. I didn’t care what had been said; now I was furious.

Than screamed as Light from my hand pierced his body. A thousand little knives of Light scattered all across his chest. He was bleeding darkness from the inside out and he fell to his knees. Sweat poured down his face and he growled in pain.

I knelt down and looked into his eyes. I could see as the Light burned through him. Anger pulsed in my veins and spoke calmly, “You are the one who will die and all of those demons you call upon will die as well. Your time of mock-reign on Earth has come to an end and you will not survive. God will be victorious and peace will reign.”

Than’s body suddenly burst into flame.

I took a step back and watched as his body burned. I didn’t know where the words had come from but I felt the Light shining brightly inside me.

I could suddenly feel my own body begin to collapse. It felt heavy, and the more I tried to figure out what was going on, the harder it was for me to support my own weight. Was my soul separating from my flesh? What was going on?

Joe’s arms caught me and I heard his voice calling my name.

I sat upright in the tub and heard my roommate call in, “Mary, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good. Just must have fallen asleep.”

“Amber, what time is it?” I looked down at my pruney fingers and wondered how long I was in the tub.

I didn’t know exactly what his words meant, but I understood what he was saying: He was hurt and needed help.

POTL Review 1

Princess of the Light by N. N. Light: Inception #ASMSG #IARTG #amwriting

Many people ask me how did I come up with the idea for Princess of the Light. Today, I thought it would be fun to share my first free-writing session back in 2012. I hope you enjoy it.

My book idea is a simple one.  It has to be fictional and it is about a girl, maybe Mary, who suddenly wakes up one day to discover that she is the Princess of the Light and she carries the same Light as her namesake over 2,000 years ago.  It is about her journey to understanding her place in the world and how she can change it.

I haven’t decided yet about whether it is first person or third.  I tend to lean towards third because then I can play the narrator.  I can introduce other characters and fill in the blanks.

Intro: Mary awoke as the alarm blared in her ear.  She slammed her hand down and the alarm was silenced.  She opened her eyes to see her bedroom in the same disarray as when she left it.  She sighed and threw back the covers.

Another day, another dollar, she thought as she walked to the washroom.  She glanced in the mirror and laughed at the huge sleep line her pillow must have made on her face.  She washed her face and brushed her teeth.  She grabbed the remote and threw on the morning news.

“Another bombing has killed at least 45 in the Middle East.  No word yet as to who is responsible.”  The smiling newscaster reported and again Mary sighed.

Why Lord, does the World have to be filled with so much violence? Her question hung in the air without a response.  It just didn’t seem fair, she thought.  If the World is nothing but violence, what is the point?  Everyone from the Eskimo to the Russians will just kill each other and that will be that.  What’s the point?

The more she thought about it, the more her heart ached.  It ached like this on that fateful day back in 2001 when the Twin Towers were attacked.  She thought it odd that she didn’t know anyone in New York and yet she felt such sadness and could feel their pain.

She shook her head to clear it and hopped into the shower and got ready for work.  When she was all dressed, she made her way to the kitchen to grab something for breakfast.

The news had shifted to sports and she was glad.  The distraction will be better.  (Not sure where she lives yet) The baseball team had won and she was happy.  She loved baseball.  It was something that her dad had loved and he took her to many games when she was little.

The thought of her dad made her well up.  She missed him so much!  It had been 5 years since he died but it was like it was yesterday.  It’s not fair, Lord! She yelled in her head over and over until the tears had subsided.

She blew her nose and then proceeded to make her breakfast.  Cereal was her go-to breakfast.  It was quick and easy and she loved it!  She grabbed her favorite mug and made herself a peppermint hot cocoa.  She never liked coffee even though her mother tried to get her to drink it.  She went back into her living room to watch the news and eat.

Suddenly the phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hi Mary, it’s Julie.”

She laughed her herself.  It was her best friend, Julie.  She knew that Julie was calling to ask about her date last night.  She was always the first one to call to see how a date went.  Even though Julie had been married for 10 years, she still wanted to be single.

“Oh, hey Jules, what’s up?”

“Don’t give me that!  You know what is up!”

Mary laughed and tried not to spill her cereal.

“Okay, okay, I’ll give you the scoop.  His name is Joe and he is an urban planner.”

“Joe?  Really?  Are you pulling my leg?”

Mary knew what she meant.  Joseph and Mary.  Just like in the Bible.

“No, I am NOT kidding!  That’s his name.  We had a laugh about it over dinner.”

“Uh ah.”  Julie had a long pause.  “Go on.”

“Anyway, we met at the bar and had a drink.  He was really nice.  He has nice eyes and a great smile.  We had our drink and went over to the restaurant and sat down.”

“Wait, what did he drink? You’re leaving out some details.  OMG, is he there?”

Mary gasped!  “Of course not!  I am trying to eat breakfast while talking to you.  Do you know how hard it is to eat cereal and talk with you?”

“Hard?”

Mary laughed again.  “Yes, it is.  Oh damn, I am running late.  Why don’t you meet me at the Bookstore and we can go for lunch.”

“Okay, what time?”

“You’d better call first, say around 2.  But call at one and see, okay?”

“Okay Mary, have a great day!”

“I will!  Bye!”

Mary hung up the phone and bolted the rest of her now soggy cereal.  So much for being able to withstand milk.  She grabbed her purse, hot cocoa and cell phone before shutting off the television.  She locked the door and made her way to the car.

Excerpt:

As I walked into my apartment, Gabriel chuckled and said, “Ah love is such a beautiful thing is it not?” Then he cleared his throat and sat up straighter on the sofa. “We have to talk, Mary.”

“Gabriel—” I started.

“Yes, we’re alone.” Thanks for reading my thoughts again, I wanted to say sarcastically. “Your roommate is out with her boyfriend.”

I nodded and leaned back against the door. I tried to relax but I was on edge. Gabriel had more to tell me about my powers and what was expected of me as the Princess of the Light. I closed my eyes and said a quick prayer: Lord, please help me to understand whatever it is that Gabriel is about to tell me.

I opened my eyes to see Gabriel smiling at me. “Okay, mental eavesdropper, I am ready.”

“Than has, in fact, employed the help of Lisbeth, just as I’d mentioned earlier. You are now being protected by four of my strongest angels. They are to keep you safe from harm and to alert you when danger is coming.”

I nodded and he continued.

“For far too long, demons like Than have influenced humans. The time has come for that to change and that is where you come in. You are God’s Chosen and you will rid the world of evil and restore goodness to Earth.”

Me? How was just one person to rid the world of evil?

I suddenly had the urge to pace. I leaned over and took off my heels.

Gabriel spoke softly, “Princess…”

I held up my hands in protest to him and said as respectfully as I could, “This is what I do to think. Please don’t try to read my thoughts, ok?”

Gabriel nodded and sat on the sofa watching me.

I put my hands down and started pacing again. Fear and doubt crept into my heart, and I stopped mid-step and closed my eyes. My father’s voice echoed in my head: Angel, you can move mountains. All you have to do is have a little faith and God will do the rest.

I put my head in my hands and cried. Gabriel quickly closed the distance between us. He wrapped his arms around me and didn’t say a word, auditory or otherwise. He just let me cry in my self-pity for a while, absorbed in my thoughts.

I sometimes sensed my father’s presence and could faintly smell his cologne. He always felt near, but I hadn’t been able to hear his voice in a long time. When I heard it a moment ago, it was wonderful, but heart-wrenching.

“Gabriel, do you think I can really defeat Than?” I tried to search his eyes for the truth.

He said simply, “Of course you can.”

I nodded and closed my eyes. Nothing could have stopped my dad, but I wasn’t sure I was as strong as he had been.

“Princess, God’s plan is revealed to all of us in the proper time.” He paused. “Have faith,” he echoed my father’s words. The reality of him doing so warmed my heart.

“You will save the life of André. Right now, the darkness has him in its clutches and André feels that he has nothing left. He feels despair and thinks there is nothing he can do to get back his life. The demons practically feed off of that negative energy to survive and have shrouded André’s entire existence—inside and out—in darkness.”

“I followed André to the cul-de-sac,” I said. “I saw André was hunched over and he didn’t appear to have any Light.” That poor man. He has lost all hope.

Gabriel nodded and a flash of light flew out of Gabriel’s hand. White smoke appeared in the center of the floor in front of me and I turned to watch it. The fog cleared and I gasped.

Than!

Fury flooded my body and I stood up and raised my hands level with Than’s chest. Die! I screamed inside.

Nothing happened. If I focused on using the Light, evil had no choice but to run and hide. Why didn’t he?

“Concentrate,” Gabriel instructed. “This is merely an exercise.”

With my hands raised once again, and I said firmly, “Light destroys the Darkness. Evil cannot stand against it.” Purple light flew out of my hands like lightning bolts and obliterated Than. Smiling to myself, I looked back at Gabriel.

“See, it is not about killing,” he said, obviously referring to the thought that accompanied my previous attempt. “That is the way of evil. It is about destroying evil with the Light. Your motive must always be about ridding the world of evil.” Gabriel paused as I sat down again.

“So, my heart must always be pure?” I turned to Gabriel.

“That is right, Princess. Your heart must always be pure. You don’t want evil to have an opportunity to take advantage and try to turn you against God.”

I tried to keep the puzzled look off of my face, but Gabriel could still read my thoughts. Did he realize how difficult that would be?

“I have feelings of love and borderline attraction towards you,” Gabriel blurted. “You do not realize that you give off such love of the Lord that it is easy for an angel like me to be attracted to you.”

Gabriel paused when I stepped back in shock, feeling my face heat up. “I swear I have a point,” he continued with a laugh. “Outside the restaurant when I was chatting with Than and Lisbeth, they saw me looking at you in an overly protective manner. They saw my weakness and tried to use it against me.”

I was a little unnerved by that.

I nodded and said, “Gabriel, I—”

A male voice interrupted me and said slyly, “I couldn’t have said it better myself.”

I whipped my head around to see Than leaning casually against the front door. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up; this was no apparition.

Gabriel’s wings flew out and he rose to his full height and Light flooded the room. Than covered his face and made a familiar low, guttural sound.

I cautiously made my way to the center of the living room. “What are you doing here, Than?” My question hung in the air.

Than growled at Gabriel, “You’re not playing by the rules.”

Gabriel lowered his wings and Than lowered his hands, as Gabriel let his Light dim.

I smiled coyly and said, “It’s not polite to ignore a woman’s question, Than.”

Than balked and said sarcastically, “I am sorry my dear, I was being lambasted with Gabriel here. What was the question again?”

Regardless of his attempt to cover it with sarcasm, I could still feel fear growing in Than. I crossed my arms over my chest and smiled back at him. “I said what are you doing here?”

Than smiled and said, “I’ve come here to warn you. If you try to interfere with the Walking Man, as you humans call him, you will wind up dead and so will that man of yours.”

“Is that supposed to scare me?”

Than shrugged then started to sputter and shake with anger. I glanced at Gabriel to see what was going on between them, but he was looking approvingly at me.

I blinked in disbelief as Than’s eyes widened. I stared into his eyes and heard him whisper, “What the…”

Out of the corner of my eye, misty light covered the distance between Than and I. My breath quickened and my pulse raced. Under my breath I said, “What’s going on?”

No one replied and as Than covered his eyes, my mouth dropped open. Than exploded upon contact with the misty light that was coming from me.

“Impressive, Princess.”

I turned to Gabriel and closed my mouth a few times. “Did I do that?”

Paranormal Romance Thursday Tour Kick-off #PNR #PNRThursday #MFRWAuthor

Paranormal Romance Tour 7

Welcome to the kick-off of the Paranormal Romance Thursday Tour! If you love paranormal romance (or know someone who does), you’re in for a treat. Every Thursday, I will be spotlighting a paranormal romance book by one of my fellow authors. Some I have read, some are on my wish-list but all are highly recommended by me. 🙂

Book Trailer (created by the leader of this tour, Carmen Stefanescu):

I love paranormal romance because it blends other-worldy with romance. I fall head over heels right along with the main character and wonder if my husband is a closet werewolf/vampire. 😉

Since it’s week one, we’re all introducing our own books. Many of you know the background story of why I wrote Princess of the Light but for those who are new to the blog (waves hello), here it’s the condensed version:

Three years ago, I was out for my morning walk and I saw a homeless man sitting in front of a gas station.  I looked at him, head uplifted to the sun, and wondered what his story was.  I hadn’t seen him before and knew instantly he was different from other homeless people.  He didn’t ask for money or hold up a sign.  He walked the length of our town and avoided contact.

A voice entered my head, “What if you could help him?  Would you?  What if you were chosen to help him and others like him?”

I stopped walking and searched my heart.  After a moment, I replied aloud, “Yes, I would.”

The voice echoed in my heart, “This is what you were called to do.”

I went home that day and started writing Princess of the Light.  Every day I would see the Walking Man and as Mary would help her Walking Man, I would help mine.  I started small by smiling at him and saying “good morning”.  The simple acknowledgement didn’t seem like a big deal to me but every time I did it, his face lit up and he nodded back to me.

I soon got my husband involved and we started leaving food, clothing and blankets for him. I promised myself that when my book got published, part of the proceeds would go to helping people like the Walking Man find food, clothing and shelter.

My book is published and I am keeping my promise. Part of the proceeds of Princess of the Light go directly to food banks in order to feed the hungry and help those in need. With only 7,500 books sold, I will be able to set up a monthly endowment for the local food bank.

Title: Princess of the Light

Author: N. N. Light

Blurb:

Gabriel, the Archangel and Messenger of God – yeah, that Gabriel – visits Mary Miller. He tells her, as the key, she is destined to spread the Light and vanquish the Darkness. Her first assignment is to restore the soul of the Walking Man. Sounds simple enough — until she’s thrown into the face of evil. And then, Joe Deacons enters her heart. This battle just got a lot more complicated. She must complete her mission without losing all she loves.

Today I thought it would be fun to share with you an excerpt close to my heart. Mary is still coming to grips with being the Princess of the Light when her best friend, Penny, calls her on the phone. Mary can hear the fear in her friend’s voice and acts out of instinct. Enjoy!

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Mary, he is here.” I could hear the fear in her whisper, but I was confused.

“Who is?”

Penny went silent, and then said, “The demon.” The darkness around her wasn’t an aura. It was an evil presence.

Than. This time, his name did not elude me.

This was who Gabriel had warned me about. It had to be.

I clasped my hand over my mouth as I heard Penny drop the phone. Silence. I had to do something. Suddenly, I knew. With my eyes still closed, I stood up and stomped the ground with my feet. The floor seemed to fall away.

When I opened my eyes, I was no longer in my office. I was face-to-face with Penny. The demon was right behind her, arm tightly around her waist.

My head was spinning and I thought I might pass out. Penny went limp.

Than released her sunken form and pointed a pale, bony finger at me. “You will lose, Princess.”

I sensed righteous anger exploding in my veins, and I instantly flooded the room with purple Light.

Than disappeared before the purple Light reached him.

With the demon gone, I fell to my knees and hugged Penny tight. The purple Light infused Penny and her eyes fluttered open.

“Oh, Mary!” Penny was breathless and began rubbing the back of her head.

I exhaled shakily, glad that Penny was okay. The demon hadn’t killed her. Either way, seeing my friend in the arms of such an evil being had made my heart nearly stop cold.

“Are you alright, Penny?” I tried to calm my voice down. Instead, my hands started to shake, too. The aftermath of trauma, no doubt.

Penny nodded. “Mary, what happened?”

I didn’t know how much to tell her. I was in my office the one minute, screaming, and the next minute I was here in this office. I shook my head, didn’t know how to answer Penny’s question.

“I am not a hundred percent sure, Penny. What do you remember?” Maybe Penny didn’t remember anything. Maybe that was for the best.

Penny looked away and made an effort to sit up. I wrapped my arms around her and lifted her upright. Penny said she felt dizzy again, but we managed to make it to a chair. Then, Penny reached for her pink water bottle sitting on the desk and took a drink.

“Just that I called you to tell you about my dream. How I totally believed you as being the Princess of the Light… Then, I saw that demon guy.” Penny paused and closed her eyes. So much for not remembering.

She opened her eyes and sighed. “I’m sorry, Mary, I don’t remember anything after that.”

“I remember seeing you in a vision and then seeing the demon behind you. I screamed, closed my eyes, and prayed. When I opened my eyes, I was here with you.” I held my breath to see if Penny would believe me.

Penny smiled at me and said with a wink, “It’s been quite an afternoon!”

I hugged my friend. “I am so incredibly glad that you are okay, Penny.” I straightened up and began to feel a little dizzy, too.

I closed my eyes and reached my hand out to steady myself. The desk wasn’t there and I felt the blackness take over. I felt like I was falling, but I was too weak to fight it, so I gave in to the feeling and realized that I was fainting.

I never faint.

My eyes fluttered open after a moment and I was disorientated. Where was I? I looked around and finally realized I was back at my office, sitting in my own chair. I leaned back in my chair and noticed the phone was still clutched in my left hand.

Had it only been a vision?

Dizziness flooded my head. I sat straight up in my chair and focused my vision on the phone. The dizziness soon subsided and I put the receiver back down.

I glanced up to see that it was five minutes after four. I sighed and reached for my purse. Time to go home.

balloons

I can’t believe it! Exactly one year ago today, I published my debut novel, Princess of the Light. WHOO HOO! I know it sounds like a cliche, but my life has changed dramatically from a year ago. I’ve grown as a writer and an author. I’ve overcome challenges and done things I never thought I could do.

In honor of this celebration, I’m donating 100% of the September Princess of the Light royalties to my local food bank!!! Here she is…

This battle just got a lot more complicated. She must complete her mission without losing all she loves.

I had never felt such an automatic attraction before, and I wanted to lean closer and see what was going on with her eyes.

She was either looking at me like I was the only man in the world—and quite possibly the sexiest one—or else my open gawking had freaked her out. Either way, I couldn’t have told her which it was, because my mouth felt like a cotton ball container.

Her face was flushed and her eyes brightened with interest. Let go of her hand, Joe, I tried to coach myself. If I didn’t let go of it soon, I might never be able to.

So I quickly let go of her hand but immediately regretted it. The whole room suddenly seemed cold and empty.

She probably thinks you’re some kind of wacko. Stop staring. You’re a logical guy… Be reasonable here. Besides, she’s probably married. I ran my fingers through my hair and tried to remember what we were just talking about. I looked up to see her glance towards the entrance. If she asked me to leave, I wouldn’t blame her.

I tried to act composed, while I glanced down at her left hand. I didn’t see a ring, so I cleared my throat and tried to act like a reasonable man again.

“Well, it was a pleasure to meet you, Mary.” Even to me, my voice sounded unnaturally thick and hoarse. I cleared my throat and looked back at her.

“Yes, it’s great to meet you, Joe. Let me show you where the section is.” She turned and simply pointed to the far left corner of the store.

Just when I thought she was through with me completely, she motioned for me to follow her.

As she led me to the back of the store, I tried to switch off my desire and concentrate on the task at hand. Focus, Joe! Decorum! The inner jokes weren’t helping. They just wanted to make me giggle like a schoolboy, and I doubted that would help matters much.

I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment while I tried to remember the books I came for.

She was driving me crazy! I shook my head like a wet dog for what seemed like the twentieth time and asked God for some help.

Suddenly she sidestepped and tripped. I reached out and caught her. As soon as my fingertips touched her, my whole being seemed to be on fire. You’ve gone completely insane, Joe. Maybe, I really had been working too hard lately.

Mary blushed and stammered, “I’m so, so s-s-sorry about that. There was, um, a stroller blocking the aisle.”

“Yes, I saw that.”

I knew I had to let go of her. When I did, she whirled around, stammering more of an apology. It took every ounce of my willpower not to bend down and kiss her. I should have taken that nap.

To keep from kissing her, I made a joke. “And here I thought you just wanted me to catch you in my arms to break the ice.” I hesitated and then added, “It worked.” Her light-hearted laugh made me wish I knew more jokes.

She cleared her throat, and turned back to where they were heading.

Once in front of the architecture books, Mary said, “If you need any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask.” Then she stepped back and smiled politely.

“Thank you for your help,” I said, and wished I could think of something else to say to stall her.

As she walked away, I thought, I could watch you all day. I didn’t realize I was grinning until my cheeks suddenly felt sore.
