Have you ever felt like you were having one of those dayzzzz?  To say Tempest Pomeroy was having a little trouble with the locals was like saying Katrina dropped a little rain on the Gulf Coast. Only time will tell if her world will right itself, but it’s Destiny after all. And ludicrous is its middle name.

What readers are have said…

“Storm Crazy is awesome! I love this series!” Storm Crazy

“I didn’t want it to end.” Cry Me a River

Blurb:

Storm Lake… Is it Mayberry or Middle Earth?

On the west end of Storm Lake lies Destiny, home of the Paramortals, supernatural beings (fae, djnn, vamps, shifters, even dragons – shh, that’s a secret) living beside humans.

I’m Tempest Pomeroy and my human job is delivering the mail. I come from a family of Tempestaeries and Djnn. Left alone to raise my brother, River, I denied my heritage for years. Now River’s genie bottle is missing, the males in my life are acting crrrazy, and my emotions are threatening to unleash my Tempestaerie powers whether I like it or not.

I turned to a human, Sheriff Jack Lang, a hunky ex-Navy pilot who believes he moved to a normal small town – like Mayberry – to raise his teenage daughter.

As he investigates the strange happenings in the area, it’s inevitable that Jack will be…erm…enlightened about Destiny’s and my true nature. Especially when the locals begin ‘exposing’ their special ‘aptitudes’. Jack says he wants to know everything, but once he does, will he stay and fight for us and the Paramortals, or take the first F-18 out of Middle Earth?

‘Cause there’s a lot of everything

A Note From Livia:

Well, I blew it, everyone. So sorry. Apparently it takes longer to get the price reduced and our power was knocked out last night so I couldn’t check.

BUT when it takes effect sometime today, I’m leaving it free for a week. Normally 5.99-6.99 the book will be .99 until next Tuesday!!

And just for your inconvenience, when you comment that you’ve ordered a copy, I’ll enter you in my kindle giveaway for October which I’m announcing on my upcoming newsletter.

A Sneak Peek:

The rumble beneath my feet was the only notice I had of the electric strike that rode straight up my legs, curling in my midsection and crawling swiftly along my right arm to produce my own version of a Fourth of July sparkler, emanating from that fingertip. Then brilliant bolts of crackling white light spit and sizzled in my palm, sending jagged streamers of hot blue fire ten feet into the air.

I gawked.

A car entering a nearby street freed me from the mesmerizing light display. This was different from any of the charging I’d previously experienced. Bigger. Usually it just sort of replenished on its own. Panicked, I looked over my shoulder, and exhaled. So far so good.

Now what? I needed to command the fire in my hand to… what? Before I could say, “Be gone,” or “Go thither,” the light subsided to a small crackly glow. That was it then. Instinct took over. I knelt beside Mr. Jackson and placed my glowing index finger against his chest. With a single szzwaattt, I zapped him, right in the heart. His chest arched up only the barest of seconds as it met my magical defibrillator, then his body relaxed.

Momentarily deafened and somewhat addled as my faculties came back online, I groped for the pulse in his neck. For a second, I thought I’d failed. But then, his tired, smoke glutted organ started beating.

Thank the gods.

Only the slight whiff of burnt flesh remained on the wind. Drained of energy, I swiped the back of my hand across my forehead. And spotted the mark.

“Zeus’ rechargeable bolts! That better be temporary.”

Centered on the spot where I’d zapped him, a pale image was forming. It looked like a pale, mini version of… well… me.

Hell Ryders MC series by @JL_Sheppard #99cents #romance #TWRP

Running Wild

Title: Running Wild, Hell Ryders MC #1

Author: J.L. Sheppard

Genre: Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

** ON SALE FOR .99 cents! **

Book Blurb:

When the perfect life Alyssa Holden planned turns out to be a life of lies, she runs to her brother, the only person she can trust. She has no idea she’s running straight into a world of badass bikers who live and ride by their own rules. One tatted rebel in particular calls to her wilder side, and while everything in her draws her toward him, every experience she’s had with men warns her away.

Jace Warren is doing what he’s done his whole life—trying to survive, making the best with what he’d been given. The only life that makes sense after the military is Hell Ryder’s Motorcycle Club, but the sweet innocence of his army buddy’s sister promises a different life, one a man like him can only dream of. Problem is, being his MC brother’s sister puts her off limits. Hard as it is, he keeps his distance. Then she kisses him, and all bets are off.

Excerpt:

A woman moaned.
Allie hadn’t meant to look, but unwillingly, she turned her head. The door wide open, so inevitably, she caught sight of them. She stood there seeing, yet unbelieving, frozen with her eyes glued to an image she’d never forget no matter how much she craved to.
Jace.
Shirtless sitting up on the edge of his bed, his head angled back, eyes closed, lips parted. A dark-haired woman draped over him, kissing his neck, her legs wrapped around him. Her black leather skirt hiked up to her waist, his hands cupping her bare ass.
Her heart clenched, squeezing in her chest so hard it hurt. Deep and searing her from the inside out.
Jesus.
How it hurt.
And she didn’t know why.
He wasn’t hers. He was a biker who couldn’t stand her. Single, free to screw however many scantily dressed women he wanted. Her brother warned her bikers did it often, and still somewhere deep inside, she held hope Jace was different. He wasn’t just a biker, he was the man who took his niece to dinner weekly, the man who’d roughed up her ex-fiancé, then held her while she cried.
It was more than that, too. She wanted to believe the man who affected her in a way no other man ever had, the man whose arms she’d felt safe in couldn’t be anything like her brother described.

Excerpt:

Movie wasn’t halfway done, and his girl had already passed out. Head on his shoulder, legs on the couch to her other side.

Smiling, he took a breath. Her head on his shoulder slipped lower. He wrapped an arm around her, turning toward her slightly until her head lay on his chest. Either he’d gotten good at doing that or she was a heavy sleeper. Probably the latter, not once when he carried her to bed had she woken.

She let out a small sigh and burrowed into him.

He loved that. She did it a lot, and every time she did it, it made him feel like he had the world in the palm of his hands. Maybe not his hands, but he definitely had the world sleeping against his chest.

His gaze slid from her face to her hair. He threaded his fingers through it. So soft. So thick. He spared a glance at the television and realized he missed an important plot point. Now, he was lost. Nothing new. He never paid much attention to the movie once she dozed off. He just sat there and watched her sleep. Often, he ran his hand through her hair like he was then. Every once in a while, he looked to the screen. And when he did, he remembered the movie would be over soon, and then, he’d have to force himself to stop staring at her, carry her to bed, and head home.

Worse part of the night, heading home.

He hated it, hated leaving her.

And still, it had to be done.

Author:  Leslie Langtry

Genre:  Cozy Comedy

Publisher: Gemma Halliday Publishing

Book Blurb:

When CIA agent Merry Wrath is “accidently” outted, she’s forced her into early retirement, changes her appearance, and moves where no one will ever find her—Iowa. Instead of black bag drops in Bangkok, she now spends her time leading a young Girl Scout troop. But Merry’s new simple life turns not-so-simple when an enemy agent shows up dead at scout camp. Suddenly Merry is forced to deal with her former life in order to preserve her future one.

It doesn’t help matters that the CIA sends in her former, sexy handler to investigate…or that the hot new neighbor across the street turns out to be the local detective in charge of her case. And when Merry is forced to take on a roommate in the voluptuous form of a turned KGB agent/bimbo, things become trickier than wet work in Waukegan or cookie sales in the spring. Nothing in the CIA or Girl Scouts’ training manuals has prepared her for what comes next…

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

It’s not every day you find Al Qaeda’s number four operative dead in a Girl Scout camp in Iowa.

The body was twisted unnaturally in the spider web element of the course that consisted of a large wood frame crisscrossed with elastic bungee cords.  Sadly, it was my troop’s favorite thing to do at camp. Now I had to disappoint them. I hated disappointing them.

A man hung there, in what had been his twenties, of Middle Eastern descent. The neck was clearly broken before he was placed in the ropes at Camp Singing Bird. He looked surprised to find himself here.  I’m sure the irony would be lost on him that in death, he really was surrounded by seventy-two virgins. Did it matter that they were grade schoolers, I wondered? Maybe that was just splitting hairs.

I would’ve been surprised too, had I not been through this kind of thing before. But I’d seen this stuff in Syria and Uzbekistan – not in the placid, wooded hills of eastern Iowa.

And my second grade troop was due at any minute. I was pretty sure I couldn’t pass this off as something adorable – like I had with the bats in Tinder Trails Cabin or the mice in the latrines. Troop Leader’s Helpful Hint #1 – if your Girl Scouts freak out upon meeting a bat/mouse/wolf spider for the first time – tell them it’s just a baby bat/mouse/wolf spider. Little girls are suckers for that and soon what was scary is ‘adorbs!’ – whatever that means.

I bent to take his pulse, just to make sure. Yup. He was dead. His glassy eyes were opened wide and his mouth hung open.  Dammit. I need this like I needed wet work in the slums of Rio.

The sounds of giggles and singing came from the trees just around the corner. Any minute the fourteen, seven and eight year old girls who called me their leader would appear. I was pretty sure I couldn’t convince them that this dead terrorist was a cute, dead baby terrorist. I pulled the parachute I was going to use for games later out of my backpack and threw it over the spider web.

“Mrs. Wrath!” The girls squealed in unison before tackling me in a sticky, group hug. Kelly, my co-leader, smirked at me. She could get away with smirking at me because she’s known me since we were six-year old scouts.

“Girls,” I gently pushed them away. “How many times do I need to tell you – it’s Ms. Wrath.  I’m not married.” Of course, I knew the answer to this question. Ad infinitum. Meaning, they’d always call me Mrs.  Any woman over the age of twenty-one in Iowa was ‘Mrs.’ Clearly it was me who didn’t get it.

“Mrs. Wrath?” The third Katelynn asked. Or was it the Kaitlin the Fourth? They all looked the same to me. And each one of them spelled their name a completely different way. Spy work had not prepared me for that.

“It’s Ms. Wrath, Katelynn.” I said with a smile. Leader Helpful Hint #2 – when talking to  little girls, always smile. They cry if you don’t. I’m not kidding. You don’t know real terror until you’ve stared at the watery eyes and rubbery bottom lip of a cute kid.

The second grader looked confused for a moment, which was to be expected. “Okay. Mrs. Wrath?” She asked again.

I sighed. “Yes, Katelynn?”

“Why is the parachute over the spider web? And why is it all lumpy?”

Kelly squinted at the parachute, eyebrows knit together. She’d probably figure it out, being a nurse and all.

“The spider web is out of commission, girls.” I announced, stepping between them and the dead man.

A chorus of complaints came from the little girls and I held up my right hand in the universal Girl Scout symbol for silence. They quieted down immediately. I once again, really wished I’d known about this trick when I was surrounded by Farc rebels in Colombia.

“Head on over to the Peanut Butter Pass – I think you’re old enough for that one now.” I said in a nice save worthy of someone of my caliber.

“YAY!” The girls exploded in shrieks and raced off to that element, leaving me in the dust.

Kelly narrowed her eyes. “They aren’t old enough for the Peanut Butter Pass.”

“You’d better get after them before they start scaling the rope, then. I’ll be there in a minute.” I shoved her in the direction of the squealing herd before she could respond. “We can’t leave them alone for a minute, you know.”

Kelly gave me a weird look, but took off after the troop. I turned back to the dead man in the parachute. It kind of looked like he was cocooned in the web – as if a giant spider had caught him, poisoned and wrapped him to save for later. If only that was what had really happened.

With a heavy sigh, I took out my cell phone to call the ranger. This was going to suck. You think the CIA is bad with paperwork? Langley has NOTHING on the Girl Scouts of America when it comes to filling out forms and accident reports in triplicate. Nothing.

The Blakeney Brother Adventure Series

Four brothers living on the edge of the law

smugglers bounty cover

Title: Smuggler’s Bounty (Book 1)

Author: Vanessa Liebe

Genre: Historical Erotic Romance / Mystery & Suspense

Publisher: Blushing Books

Book Blurb:

Elizabeth Thornton is left all alone in Georgian England after losing her parents in a tragic accident, so she travels to Cornwall to live with her kindly, older, and very proper Aunt Judith. Soon, however, she begins to suspect her aunt of hiding something nefarious. Determined to learn the truth behind the strange goings on, she sets out on a quest for the truth. A quest that leads to danger, and trouble with the law, and a very handsome smuggler with a firm hand and smoldering, sexy eyes who is as determined to keep Elizabeth safe as she seems to be to put herself in harm’s way.

William is growing tired of the smuggler’s life of danger and instability. If he can just finish his last run, he can give it all up and finally settle down, find love, and start a family. But he already has a preventative officer hot on his heels who is determined to end his career and throw him in jail – or worse. The beautiful, headstrong Elizabeth is a complication he does not need. But she, too, is hot on his heels – and irresistible. Now he must avoid capture, and find time to discipline this woman with an appetite for adventure, who seems determined to steal his heart.

When these two are together passions ignite, sparks fly, and danger lurks around every corner. Can Elizabeth and William avoid the law? Will they finally find the happiness that has so long eluded them both?

Excerpt:

She closed the library door and immediately went over to the fireplace with her lantern.

She managed to light the candle in it with the tinder box she’d been given and then pulled on the fire poker once more. The entrance slid open and she ducked down to go inside. She was so keen to explore that she didn’t consider that it might be dangerous, and simply stepped into the tunnel. There was a catch just inside the tunnel that closed the door behind her.

Elizabeth took a deep breath and walked forward with her lantern lighting the way. The tunnel was all wooden paneling at first and so she thought she must still be inside the house. But she soon came to some steps that led a long way down. Then she had to be careful, holding the lantern and her skirts up around her as she made her way carefully down them. When she reached the bottom, the walls were roughly hewn rock and she felt that thrill of adventure again as she realized that she must be underground somewhere.

Elizabeth was so preoccupied with her thoughts that it was a complete shock when she was suddenly grabbed from the side. She dropped her lantern with a shriek and the glass casing smashed. The candle sputtered out and she was left in complete darkness with the man who had grabbed her. He covered her mouth to stop her cries and held her tightly against him.

Elizabeth kicked and struggled in panic before biting hard into the hand that covered her mouth. The man swore but held onto her.

“Curiosity killed the cat, sweetness,” the man purred into her ear, causing her neck hairs to stand on end. “And if you bite me again you little hell cat, I’ll bite back.”

She shivered in fear, and something else she’d rather not admit to, at the sound of that voice. It was the handsome smuggler from last night – the leader. Although Elizabeth was scared of what he might do with her for meddling, she hoped that she could reason with him, especially if she let him know who her aunt was. However, all coherent thought stopped as he ran a hand over her body.

TamingTheSpy

Title: Taming the Spy

Author: Vanessa Liebe

Genre: Historical Erotic Romance / Mystery & Suspense

Publisher: Blushing Books

Book Blurb:

Cameron Blakeney is a man on a mission. Well, more than one, actually. Not only does he wish to reunite his brothers, separated from him in childhood, but he’s a spy for the Crown. When he’s tasked to observe two French spies in Portsmouth, he hopes to use the opportunity to locate his youngest brother, too. What he’s not expecting is to be working with a co-agent in the form of the lovely, undisciplined Lady Arabella.

Lady Arabella Willoughby enjoys working as a female spy and is looking forward to her latest assignment. However, when she discovers her co-agent is Cameron Blakeney, she’s not so enthralled. Her one-time childhood friend and hero seems to relish taking her to task over the slightest ‘misdemeanor’.

Their mission sees them traveling across the beautiful English countryside, but it is all they can do to stay focused on their goal and not each other. For his part, Cameron is enjoying teaching Arabella new things. Things like how to reveal secrets written in invisible ink, and how to pleasure a man with her mouth.

Arabella is a devoted student and learns all of her lessons well. Lessons that include learning to find pleasure in being over Cameron’s knee, bare bottom upturned, legs spread, and with his hand coming down to help her realize the error of her headstrong, reckless actions.

Publisher’s note: This suspenseful romantic spy story contains scenes of domestic discipline and explicitly described sexual scenes.

Excerpt:

Cameron knocked on the spymaster’s door and entered.

“Good morning, Cameron.”

“Good morning, James.”

The two men had known each other for years and Cameron was glad that at least here in this office he could be an ordinary man again.

“How’s the estate?”

“Flourishing,” Cameron told the older man with pride. “Despite personal circumstances, my father managed everything with great efficiency. I barely have to do anything. I also have a very capable steward.”

James Coleridge nodded. Then pierced him with an intelligent gaze. “And your brothers?”

Cameron actually felt a lump in his throat at mention of them. They’d been separated for so long. “As you know I’ve found one of them, Gabe. Along with his wife. I’m continuing my search for the others. I believe William may be down in Cornwall, so I have sent runners there to find out.”

“Well, I have a mission for you and while you’re doing it, it may offer you an opportunity to search for your youngest brother.”

Cameron was immediately intrigued. “What do you mean?”

The other man clasped his hands and leaned on his elbows on the desk. “I have knowledge of two French spies coming to Portsmouth.”

A growing sense of anticipation was felt. This was what he was meant for—code breaking, dangerous undercover and intelligence gathering work, not dancing with pretty debutantes at balls.

“Do tell me more, James.”

“You’ve heard of Brochand & Fouché?”

Cameron raised a brow. “I believe so. Amongst my travels for the Crown.”

“They’re coming to England to gather intelligence from certain French engineers studying here.”

“Naval and industrial spies?”

“Exactly so. They’re landing in Portsmouth, so they’ll begin with the naval intelligence. I strongly suspect that their final destination will be London to mix with the political elite of the haut ton.”

Cameron rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “The engineers would be unable to attend social gatherings of course. Do they have an aristocratic contact?” If there was a traitor, Cameron wanted to know.

James gave a brief shake of his head. “Not that I’m aware of. It will be part of your role to find out. I believe they will have to coerce or blackmail someone into helping them. Or they may bribe someone, in which case do they have finances available to them?”

Cameron’s jaw tightened. “There’s bound to be some fool with pockets to let or a gambler they can exploit.”

“Well, you’ll be following them around, so you can discover all of this for me, including any money trails,” the older man said.

Cameron’s eyes widened. “Following?”

“Yes. Don’t look surprised, Cameron. You’re ideally placed for this task. I want you to watch them in Portsmouth, follow them around in various disguises and report back to me. If they send any correspondence, I want you to intercept it and read it. If it gives away quantities of armaments, I wish for you to downgrade them. And send a replacement. If not too much is given away, you can reseal the letter.”

“Yes. Fine.” Cameron was used to operating in such a manner. “And if they leave Portsmouth?”

“Send a message back to me, but always follow them. I want to know everywhere they go, who they meet, especially once they are here in London. You can be yourself at social events, as can your co-agent, for you are both already well known amongst the ton and can mix naturally with the political elite, without drawing attention to yourselves.”

The sudden mention of a co-agent surprised him. Cameron had always worked alone before. It was less dangerous. “My what?” He couldn’t his displeasure.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

“Stand and deliver!”

The demand came loud and clear, as Lady Caroline Godwin’s coach came to a sudden stop. She sucked in a deep breath, holding onto the sides of her bench seat to brace herself against falling off. Her maid did the same, looking up at her in fright. “Oh, my lady. It’s a highwayman. I knew we shouldn’t have travelled at night.”

Lady Caroline couldn’t have agreed more. However, upon receiving news that her father was gravely ill and had lost a fortune at cards again, she knew she must leave London and return home. Travelling at night to get there as quickly as possible had seemed worth the risk. Not only did she need to know exactly how much her father had lost, she knew that her mother wouldn’t be able to cope with the situation. Her father had suffered a stroke immediately after losing and was currently bed bound.

Lady Caroline tried to reassure her maid. “I need you to be calm, Maisie. If we do as the rogue asks, we will come to no harm.” Yet after the initial shout, there was no sign of the highwayman. Furious both at her father for gambling away his money, and for getting stopped like this, Lady Caroline was feeling brave rather than scared. She was about to get out of the coach and see what was going on, when there were a few muffled curses from above them, a few thumps and then silence. She frowned, straining her ears to hear more.

“He’s going to kill us all!” cried Maisie fearfully, before fainting.

Lady Caroline looked at her maid lying in a crumpled heap on the bench seat opposite and couldn’t help feeling even crosser. “For heaven’s sake,” she muttered. And what has happened to my coachman and footman? “Frank? George?” she called out. She was met with silence.

She gasped as the door was suddenly pulled open and a tall, masked figure appeared, holding a pistol. The man, dressed all in black and with a tricorn hat on his head, looked around the coach, before returning his gaze to her. The pistol was aimed at her. “Good evening, my lady.”

Lady Caroline stared at him. The moonlight shone down on him, but didn’t reveal much, due to his dark clothing and black eye mask. She could make out sensual lips though, her gaze drawn to them because it was the only part of his face she could clearly make out. Then her gaze dropped to the pistol aimed at her and she felt renewed anger. He’d caused her maid to faint, he’d done god knows what to her male servants and now he was aiming a weapon at her. She raised her chin and glared at him. “It was a good evening, until you came along,” she told him. “What have you done to my coachman and footman?”

The highwayman had the nerve to grin at her. “They’re gagged and bound, my lady. But unhurt.”

He climbed into the carriage, sitting down opposite her, on the edge of the seat, next to her unconscious maid. “Now, if you don’t mind handing over some of your baubles, I will leave you in peace.”

Thanks to her father, Lady Caroline didn’t have much in the way of jewelry. What she did have held no value. She looked down her nose at him. “I’m afraid you’ve robbed the wrong coach tonight.”

“Is it too late for second chances?” The Rebel’s Redemption by @JacqBiggar #romanticsuspense

JacquieBiggar_TheRebelsRedemption_800px

Title: The Rebel’s Redemption (Book 2 Wounded Hearts Series)

Author: Jacquie Biggar

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Is it too late for second chances?

Jared Martin left Tidal Falls a hotheaded youth. Eight years in the military has turned him into a cynical, disillusioned man.

Then he returns home to find out he’s a father.

When an old enemy follows and causes mayhem in the small town, can Jared overcome the odds to protect the woman he’s always loved and the child he never knew?

Or is it be too late for them to have a second chance?

Excerpt:

Jared’s world narrowed down to the little black barrel of the gun pointed at his chest. Funny, in all the years of being in the SEAL teams he’d never been in this situation. Not to say he hadn’t dodged his share of bullets. It’s just they’d always erupted like a hailstorm, out of nowhere. This was somewhere. The back alley of his mother’s freaking café in freaking America to be exact. What the hell?

If he wasn’t so pissed off at himself for getting into this situation, he might have laughed. Eight years overseas off and on, and he was going to get shot in his own backyard. How’s that for ironic?

“Look man, why don’t we talk about this?” Jared forced his gaze to focus on Sergei’s steely gaze instead of the muzzle of the semi-automatic.

“The time for talk is past,” the Russian said. “You ignored my advice and instead made a fool out of me with that stupid trick you performed.”

“Advice? You call beating the livin’ shit out of me, advice?” Jared ground his teeth together, and fought to keep a level tone. “You can’t blame a guy for wanting to retaliate.” A crash by the garbage caused both men to crouch into a fight stance. A tabby cat raced away. Jared straightened, his heart knocking against his ribcage, as desperate to escape this mess as the animal. He needed to defuse the situation before someone came upon them; please God not his mom.

“Okay, you’re right. I shouldn’t have set off alarms or caused those slots to pay out. But seriously dude, you can’t go around acting all KGB, we’re in the good old USA now.” Jared kept a careful eye on the guy’s trigger finger and cursed his loose tongue. What part of defuse couldn’t he figure out?

Sergei tipped his felt hat back on his bald head like an old time gunslinger. His hand holding the gun never wavered. “You have big mouth.”

Yeah, I’ve heard that a time or ten.

“Why don’t we handle this like two adults? I’ll call your boss, tell him I screwed up and it’ll never happen again…” There was no doubt on that, if he ever went near a casino again he’d kick his own ass. “And then you can go back to ruling your little kingdom far, far, away.”

Excerpt:

“Hold me. Don’t let me go,” Laura said. She nuzzled his neck and sank into his strong embrace. “Love me,” she whispered in his ear. His muscles tensed in response. She wanted his arms around her, his lips touching hers.

They sank on the bed and held each other close. She was afraid to let him go, afraid the emptiness would find her, afraid of losing him, again. With an unending thirst, she focused on his mouth, the shape of his lips, the kisses that they promised.

His hand stroked the side of her body from her breast to her thigh, claiming them. One stroke of her breast and she tugged on his shirt. He didn’t hesitate. He obliged her and pulled it off. Her hand played down the hard planes of his chest. Her eyes widened at the sight of the scars on his chest.

“These weren’t here.” She traced them with her finger.

He stopped her hand and brought it to his lips. “Fighting for The Maxwell comes with a price. I don’t want to think of the Maxwell.” He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

She closed her eyes and reveled in the tingling sensation racing through her body and put her head on his shoulder.

He opened her bodice and stroked the top of her chest then, with trembling hands, touched her breasts. A low moan escaped her lips.

Jamie bent and kissed each breast.

He ignited a flame inside her that set her on fire. Delicious shudders pulsed through her. She pulled his head away and kissed him.

Her fingers traced the scars and the muscles of his chest danced at the light touch. “Where did you get this one?”

“In a fight with the English.” His rapt gaze focused on her face.

Her lips brushed against his skin.  His skin deckled in gooseflesh. Her finger moved on. “And this one?”

“A reiver attack,” his voice was husky and seductive.

The hooded passion in his eyes encouraged her. She kissed the scar and moved on. The tips of her fingers traced down his chest. “Here is another.” The scar snaked below his navel. Another kiss. Her fingers trailed down further.

He pulled her up and rolled on top of her. Her body instinctively arched against his. “You are mine.” His warm breath brushed against her face. Two heartbeats passed. “Do you hear me? You’re mine,” he said more urgently.

“Yes.” Her voice an intimate whisper. His lips tugged into a sideways grin.

His smile that made her bones go limp. It was his magic.

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. Spring is here and I’m itching for some good books to read. We just paid our taxes so money is tight. So, off I went to Amazon see what I could find in their deals section. Everything from Fiction to Romance to Mystery were on sale so here are the ones I recommend (and downloaded):

The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen ($1.50)

In an idyllic small-town neighborhood, a near tragedy triggers a series of dark revelations.

From the outside, Sycamore Glen, North Carolina, might look like the perfect all-American neighborhood. But behind the white picket fences lies a web of secrets that reach from house to house.

Up and down the streets, neighbors quietly bear the weight of their own pasts—until an accident at the community pool upsets the delicate equilibrium. And when tragic circumstances compel a woman to return to Sycamore Glen after years of self-imposed banishment, the tangle of the neighbors’ intertwined lives begins to unravel.

During the course of a sweltering summer, long-buried secrets are revealed, and the neighbors learn that it’s impossible to really know those closest to us. But is it impossible to love and forgive them?

Heirs of Grace by Tim Pratt ($1.50)

Recent art school graduate Bekah thought she’d hit the jackpot: an unknown relative died, and she inherited a small fortune and a huge house in the mountains of North Carolina.

Trey Howard, the lawyer who handled the estate, is a handsome man in his twenties and they hit it off right away—and soon become more than friends. Bekah expected a pleasant year to get her head together and have a romantic fling. Problem is, the house is full of junk…and siblings she didn’t know she had are willing to kill her for it.

More important, the junk in her new house is magical, she’s surrounded by monsters, and her life seems to be in mortal peril every time she ventures into a new room. As Bekah discovers more about her mysterious benefactor and the magical world he inhabited, she’s realizes that as tough and resourceful as she is, she might just be in over her head…

Heirs of Grace is a tale of family and magic, action and wonder, blending the strong heroine, cheeky humor, and dark fantasy that have become the hallmarks of Tim Pratt’s writing.

Only The Innocent by Rachel Abbott ($1.50)

Every moment of Sir Hugo Fletcher’s life has been chronicled in the British press: his privileged upbringing, his high-profile charity work to end human trafficking—even his two marriages. But when the billionaire philanthropist is discovered murdered in his London home, tied naked to a bed, the scandal is only a shadow of the darkness lurking off-camera.

Laura Fletcher returns from an Italian vacation to find her husband dead and her home under siege by paparazzi. Is she shocked? Yes. But is she distraught? Not exactly. Especially when Chief Inspector Tom Douglas reveals his suspicions that Hugo’s killer is female. Laura always knew she wasn’t the only woman in Hugo’s life. And she knows she wasn’t the only one with a motive to kill.

The deeper Douglas digs, the more sordid details about Hugo Fletcher he uncovers. And yet nothing compares to the secret Laura guards, a secret that could bring the guilty to justice—or destroy an innocent life forever.

The Woman on the Orient Express by Lindsay Jayne Ashford ($1.50)

Hoping to make a clean break from a fractured marriage, Agatha Christie boards the Orient Express in disguise. But unlike her famous detective Hercule Poirot, she can’t neatly unravel the mysteries she encounters on this fateful journey.

Agatha isn’t the only passenger on board with secrets. Her cabinmate Katharine Keeling’s first marriage ended in tragedy, propelling her toward a second relationship mired in deceit. Nancy Nelson—newly married but carrying another man’s child—is desperate to conceal the pregnancy and teeters on the brink of utter despair. Each woman hides her past from the others, ferociously guarding her secrets. But as the train bound for the Middle East speeds down the track, the parallel courses of their lives shift to intersect—with lasting repercussions.

Filled with evocative imagery, suspense, and emotional complexity, The Woman on the Orient Express explores the bonds of sisterhood forged by shared pain and the power of secrets.

Treasured by Thursday (Weekday Brides Series Book 7) by Catherine Bybee ($1.50)

The seventh and final tale in the dazzling, heartwarming, and pulse-racing Weekday Brides series.

Gabriella Masini: She’s a woman haunted by her past, with the scars to prove it. She believes that fairy tales are for other people. An elite matchmaker at Alliance, she’s great at crunching numbers, but something doesn’t add up with her latest prospective client: a billionaire bad boy with his own secrets. When Gabi refuses to be his temporary wife, Hunter forces her hand with an offer she can’t refuse. But marriage to a man like that could never last…or could it?

Hunter Blackwell: Only his bank account is bigger than his ruthless ability to obtain anything he wants. These days, he has a secret reason to settle down, at least for a while—and he thinks the sensual and sassy Gabi will fit the bill perfectly. But when their marriage of convenience becomes downright dangerous, Hunter must decide how far to take his vow to honor and protect Gabi forever.

How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain by Gregory Berns ($1.50)

The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that’s uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly “man’s best friend.” But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?

After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question—use an MRI machine to scan the dog’s brain. His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner.

With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles. Berns’s research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.

How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.

The Language of Hoofbeats by Catherine Ryan Hyde ($1.50)

From the bestselling author of Pay It Forward comes a story of the heartbreak and healing power of family. New to a small town, Jackie and Paula envision a quiet life for their kids: a young adopted son and two teenage foster children, including the troubled Star. However, they quickly butt heads with their neighbor, Clementine, who disapproves of their lifestyle and is incensed when Star befriends her spirited horse, Comet. Haunted by past tragedy and unable to properly care for Comet, Clem nevertheless resents the bond Star soon shares with the horse. When Star disappears with Comet, the neighbors are thrown together—far too close together. But as the search for the pair wears on, both families must learn to put aside their animosity and confront the choices they’ve made and the scars they carry. Plumbing the depths of regret and forgiveness, The Language of Hoofbeats explores the strange alchemy that transforms a group of people into a family.

Winner of a Rainbow Award

The One I Was by Eliza Graham ($1.50)

Restless, troubled Rosamond Hunter has spent most of her life running away from the past, filled with guilt about her involuntary role in her mother’s death. When her nursing job brings her back to Fairfleet, her childhood home, to care for an elderly refugee, she is forced to confront the ghosts that have haunted her for so long.

Her patient, Benny Gault, first came to Fairfleet, England, in 1939, having fled Nazi Germany on a Kindertransport train.

As his health fails, he and Rosamond begin to confide in each other. At first their tentative friendship revolves around the love they both shared for Rosamond’s glamorous grandmother, Harriet, but as their trust in each other grows, guilty secrets are exposed and history is turned on its head.

From the acclaimed author of Playing with the Moon and Restitution comes a beautiful and haunting tale of friendship, redemption and forgiveness across generations.

Revised edition: This edition of The One I Was includes editorial revisions.

Sally works side-by-side with Jack while Trevor is hundreds of miles away in the city. The more time she spends with Jack, the stronger her feelings are for him.

When Trevor shows up to propose to Sally right before Christmas and finds her in Jack’s embrace, she must make the biggest choice of her life: true love.

Excerpt:

The next morning, Sally woke to the smell of sizzling bacon. She stretched in bed before putting on her robe. She glanced at the clock. It was already eight. She looked out the window. As far as she could see, snow covered everything like a warm glittering blanket. She hugged herself.

“So, this is what it means to be in love? I like it.”

She crept down the stairs, to see what Trevor was cooking. A smile lit her face and she sat in her grandpa’s rocking chair, watching Trevor in the kitchen. He wore a green plaid robe, his hair ruffled from sleep and there was a slight pillow crease across his left cheek. He flipped pancakes while whistling a classic rock song. She hugged her knees, reveling in her domestic bliss.

“I could get used to this,” she whispered.

He turned around and grinned.

“Good morning, beautiful. Want some coffee?”

She walked into the kitchen, giggling as if it was Christmas.

“It’s like I’m dreaming, what with you here, making breakfast.”

He handed her a mug of steaming coffee. She took a sip.

“Ahh, it’s just how I take it. Heavy cream and sugar.” She took another sip.

Trevor pulled her into his embrace.

“You are a vision in white, my angel.” He kissed her senseless. Her body responded and she burned with desire. She peppered kisses along his jawline.

“I want to go back to bed,” she whispered in his ear. She raked her teeth down his ear.

He moaned.

“You drive me crazy when you do that.” His hot breath searing her neck.

“Mmm…” she whispered.

He playfully slapped her butt.

“Vixen.”

She laughed seductively.

“Now go sit at the table and wait for breakfast.” He refilled her coffee. “Tsk tsk tsk, distracting the cook.” He winked.

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic by @malia_ann #MGLit #99cents #fantasy

Book 1 Magic

Title:  Chase Tinker and the House of Magic (The Chase Tinker Series, Book 1)

Author:  Malia Ann Haberman

Genre:  Middle Grade/Tween Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Chase Tinker has never believed in real, honest-to-goodness magic, but that’s all about to change when he’s attacked by a ferocious…soccer ball and t-shirts!?

Before he knows what’s hit him, he’s thrust into a frightening, yet thrilling, paranormal world where a missing dad, out-of-control powers, a 560 year old, incredibly magical house, and a dastardly wicked enemy are only part of all the craziness.

Now it’s up to three daring teenagers, one cute middle grader, and one feisty ferret to save the world’s magic, free will, and light…

Excerpt:

Andy gripped Chase’s shoulder. “It was me! I did something, but I didn’t mean to. I wanted you to stop. You were going to be squashed!” He wouldn’t stop babbling. “No one was moving. What’s going on? I don’t get it. Why—”

“I—I don’t know, Andy. I don’t know,” said Chase, his voice shaking slightly as he clambered to his feet. “Calm down, okay?” He needed time to think. There had to be some kind of reasonable explanation for all the freaky supernatural happenings. He just didn’t know what it was at the moment. “Come on, we better go home. Grab the ball.”

Neither boy said anything as they hurried across the noisy, traffic-filled streets and dodged past other pedestrians. Chase, his mind spinning, kept sneaking glances at Andy. He was afraid his brother would faint dead away right there in the middle of the sidewalk.

Chase breathed a sigh of relief when they finally reached their apartment building. Andy pushed through the revolving door. Chase was about to follow when, out of the blue, an eerie, icy breeze ruffled his hair and swirled around him. Rubbing the goosebumps popping up on his arms, he started to glance back over his shoulder when someone shoved him from behind and toward the open back door of a waiting cab. Tripping, he whacked his head on the door’s top corner. The shadowy interior loomed closer as stars danced in front of his eyes. A hand grabbed his arm.

“Chase! What are you doing?” exclaimed Andy’s voice. Chase shook his head to clear it as Andy pulled him away from the vehicle.

“Wh-what?” mumbled Chase.

“Quit messing around,” said Andy, tugging Chase across the sidewalk. “We need to go inside.”

A hooded man slipped by the boys. As the man turned his head, Chase caught a glimpse of cold, piercing, light-blue eyes that seemed to cut right through him. The strange man slid into the taxi. It swerved into traffic and took off down the street. Feeling oddly threatened, yet not understanding why, Chase followed Andy through the rotating door.

“Please don’t let me kill a tourist” Ukulele Murder by @LeslieLangtry #99cents #cozymystery

UkuleleMurder

Title:  UKULELE MURDER

Author: Leslie Langtry

Genre:  Cozy Mystery

Publisher: Gemma Halliday Publishing

Book Blurb:

Nani Johnson thought she had it made when she moved from Kansas to the resort town of Aloha Lagoon, Kauai. In spite of her certifiably crazy mom, Nani is determined that nothing will stop her from becoming a ukulele virtuoso! Unfortunately her Julliard training doesn’t help her break into the local music scene due to some heavy competition from the Terrible Trio—three hostile, local musicians. The only work she finds is a few bar mitzvahs and gigs at the kitschy Blue Hawaii Wedding Chapel.

But when one of Nani’s competitors drops dead right after a public feud, Nani becomes the police’s main suspect. A missing murder weapon, mysterious threats, and a heck of a frame-up job all have Nani worrying she’ll be trading in her flowery muumuus for prison orange. Enter hunky local botanist Nick Woodfield, who just might be able to help her clear her name…that is if he doesn’t have secrets of his own. With the bodies stacking up, the danger closing in, and the authorities circling, Nani must track down a killer…before she ends up the latest victim of the Ukulele Murderer!

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

If anyone requests “Ukulele Lady,” I’m out of here. I’m not going to do it. Not again. Not for the millionth time. Is that the only song tourists know? Yeesh. Please, tiki god of the Ukulele, don’t let me kill a tourist today.

“‘Ukulele Lady!'” a dumpy, middle-aged man in a Frankie Goes to Hollywood T-shirt screams. He gives me a knowing nod with his balding head to indicate he’s the only one in the room who knows true Hawaiian culture.

I hate him. I imagine bludgeoning him with my koa wood uke.

But I don’t. Do you know how hard it is to get blood out of koa wood? Well…I don’t know either, but I’d guess it isn’t easy.

Instead, I play the damn song—smiling as I imagine shoving his pineapple drink up his…

The crowd cheers as I perform. I know—it’s not so bad having an adoring audience. But this isn’t the audience I want. This is Judah Horowitz’s bar mitzvah. One of the few gigs I could get in Aloha Lagoon.

My name is Hoalohanani Johnson. My mother, Harriet Jones Johnson, is a bit of a Hawaiian-obsessed nut. It’s so bad that it’s to the point where she believes she is the reincarnation of a Hawaiian princess and says that my name came from a dream from an ancestor god. In reality, it probably came from the bottom of a rum bottle.

To her endless annoyance, my redheaded, green-eyed mom comes from a long line of English ancestors and grew up in Kansas. Dad was a third-generation blond, brown-eyed German whose name was shortened to Johnson due to the inability to pronounce whatever the name really was. Neither of my parents had ever been to Hawaii until Mom and I moved here after Dad died.

I go by Nani. And I now live in Aloha Lagoon on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, with my mother, who now calls herself Haliaka and dyes her hair and eyebrows a ridiculous shade of black that does not look natural. I’ve never understood where my dark-brown hair comes from, but I look more native than she does. Always dressed in a muumuu, Mom wears hibiscus flowers in her hair and hangs out on my lanai, singing island songs all day and night, much to my neighbors’ dismay. Sigh.

I finish my set, tell the crowd “aloha,” and am cut off by the DJ who decides suddenly to play a gangsta rap song.

“Thank you!” Gladys Horowitz of Trenton, New Jersey, and Judah’s mother, slips an envelope into my hands before running to the dance floor to shimmy disturbingly. Thirteen-year-old Judah hangs his head in shame.

I make my way through the crowd to the bar and order a decidedly un-Hawaiian vodka tonic.

“Here’s the ten bucks I owe you.” The bartender smiles, handing me money.

I gulp my drink, slapping an empty glass on the bar. “I told you, someone requests it every time.” I take his money and head to my car. My shift in hell is over.

Writing #InspirationalRomance With Heart Without Preaching Religion #99cents #FridayReads

christmas-wish-potl

“To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.” – Herman Melville

When I sat down to write, Princess of the Light, I never intended on writing inspirational romance. I had just had a moving encounter with a homeless man and had all these thoughts running around in my head. I had to get them down on paper before they floated out of my head. Wait, I should probably start at the beginning.

Five years ago, I was out for my morning walk and I saw a homeless man sitting in front of a gas station. I looked at him, head uplifted to the sun smiling, and wondered what his story was. Why was he smiling? There was such a peace in his weathered face, I stopped walking and openly stared.  I watched him for a while and knew he was different from other homeless people.  He did not ask for money or hold up a sign. He kept to himself and avoided contact.

A voice suddenly entered my head, “What if you could help him? Would you? What if you were chosen to help him and others like him?”

I searched my heart and after a moment, I replied aloud, “Yes, I would.”

“This is what you were called to do.” The voice echoed in my heart.

I went home that very day and started writing. This simple encounter changed my life forever and inspired me to write Princess of the Light, an inspiring paranormal romance.

Writing inspirational romance can be tricky. I must admit I had some difficulty in the beginning. I wanted to inspire people to show kindness to people in their own city, especially those who are less fortunate and in need of food. I wanted to bring to light the hunger epidemic going on in America and Canada, two of the richest countries in the world. Nevertheless, I didn’t want to sound preachy.

The first thing I did was create a story of a woman who is destined to help someone like the homeless man I met. I wanted her to be strong and able to fight off the real and imagined demons tormenting a homeless man. Everyone likes a hero/heroine to root for and I made her female so I could relate to her.

The second thing I did was map out the homeless man and his story. I gave him a name and created a heart-breaking backstory for him. His story arc had to center on redemption and forgiveness, something everyone could relate.

The third thing I did was to write an edge of your seat novel with plenty of action. The story has action, adventure, romance, obstacles, battles, twists and turns. I wanted the reader to get lost in the story, not realizing they are being inspired.

Here are some writing tips I offer to writing inspirational romance:

  • Weave universal themes throughout your plot. You can be inspirational and reach a broader audience if you are universal. Every religion has many of the same morals and tenants to live by. Instead of mentioning specific religious names, use something more general. The main theme to Princess of the Light is Light versus Darkness. I use the term Light to convey spiritual goodness in a universal way. It does not matter what your spiritual belief is, you can relate to good versus evil.

  • Use everyday language. Being inspirational does not mean you have to sound intellectual or high and mighty. I have found when I write in modern English, I can reach more people than by using formal English.

  • Create real characters. I know this sounds like a no-brainer but stick with me for a minute. Creating characters who are human with flaws have a much bigger impact than having perfect-syndrome characters. Remember, you are trying to reach people. If the reader cannot relate to the main characters, they will not hear the message. They will scoff and mutter how that would never happen. Avoid this roadblock by putting your characters in a real situation and have them react in a natural way.

  • Consider donating part of the proceeds to a charity related to your book. Part of the proceeds of my book go directly to food banks and it’s something every reader can get behind. One of my characters is a homeless man and he relies on food banks. Homeless people all over the world need our help and when readers buy my book, they are helping those in need.

  • Never talk down to people. I cannot stress this enough, when writing inspirational, do not talk down to people. For as long as I can remember, I hated reading books where they preached at me about what I was doing wrong. Often, you can have a greater impact if you are on the same level as your reader. Use yourself as an example or if you are writing fiction, show your main character learning a valuable lesson.

  • Concentrate on the emotional arcs in your plot. Characters and circumstances inspire readers so let that be your focus. Ramp up the emotions in your reader by having your characters go through something. Part of my main character’s background is the emotional scarring from her father’s sudden death. It shapes who she is as a woman and explains her protectiveness over the Walking Man when battling the demons.

  • When writing non-fiction, be sure to do your research. With the birth of Wikipedia and Google, anyone can find out the truth about anything. Be historically accurate and be sure to give proper credentials.  There is nothing worse than reading about Joan of Arc and the weapon she uses isn’t invented for one hundred years after her death.

  • When writing a tell-all memoir, please consider changing the names to protect the innocent. We all have family skeletons, out of courtesy to your family while still being truthful, do the reader a favor, and change the names. Have some fun with it.  You will still be able to tell your story and inspire others; you just do not have to out your family to the world.

  • Consider using the journal/diary format for your story. I love the feel and intimacy of reading an inspirational diary. Even if it is fiction, this is a terrific way to tell your story. Everyone loves reading a diary and it draws the reader into the head of the main character so effectively.

  • Let the story tell itself. You have a story burning in your heart and the worst thing you can do is to get in the way of the story. Unleash the characters and let them use you to tell their story. Free yourself of your insecurities and fears. Do not worry if it is a good story or if you are a good writer. You are primarily a storyteller. Let the story be front and center; the rest of the details will work themselves out.

Writing inspiration is not complicated and anyone can do it. The key to writing a successful inspirational story without preaching is reaching people on an emotional level and showing them they can make a difference in their own corner of the world. Helping others is a characteristic inherent in every human being as is spreading the Light.

Excerpt:

I sunk into the water, and let the suds and scent of lavender engulf me.  The stress of the day finally began to melt away.

My body jolted.

I was in the middle of the desert. There were grass huts and women with hajjis walking quickly around me. Something whizzed past my ear, and a deafening explosion rocked me off my feet. I instinctively curled my body in a fetal position.

I listened for the screams to start, but it was eerily silent. I glanced around, but all I saw was water.

I was still in the bath. What had just happened? Was that a vision? Had I fallen asleep?

My headache was a dull thud now.

A knock on the washroom door made me gasp. I sat upright in the tub and heard my roommate, Amber, call in, “Mary, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good. Just must have fallen asleep.”

“Hey, Amber, what time is it?” I looked down at my pruney fingers and wondered how long I was in the tub.

Amber said, “It’s five thirty.”

I leaned forward and turned on the hot water. The bath water had gotten cold while I had drifted off.

I leaned back as the warm water ran over my toes and closed my eyes, wondering what I should wear tonight. I wanted to look beautiful for Joe. I began to picture every outfit in my closet, and tried to imagine his reaction to it.

A shiver ran down my back and I faintly hear the water splash over the edge.

I opened my eyes and tried to scream. All that came out was a reverse gasp, and I pulled my towel in to cover my body.

A small child was in the tub with me. He couldn’t be older than five. Blood was running down his face, and his body was covered in sand mixed with congealing blood. He was clinging to my towel, and I didn’t know whether to let go of it or yank it back from him. His dark hair was wet with fresh blood. My heart filled with sadness and I quit trying to scream.

As I clung to my own towel, I didn’t know what was happening or what I should do.

The little boy raised his head and more sadness poured into my heart. His eyes were dark pools of grief and despair. They pleaded with me, begging me to help.

How? I mouthed silently.

I jumped when he began to move slowly toward me. He lifted one arm and spoke in a language I didn’t recognize. I knew I didn’t know exactly what his words meant, but I knew what he was saying: He was hurt and needed help.

The closer he came, the more my fear eased and the pain increased. He reached for my arm. His hand was bloodied, and it sent a jolt of electricity and agony throughout my body. I tried to pull away, but his grip was locked on my arm. His eyes turned black and murky, and a voice not his own spoke.

“Princess, help my people,” it said.

I shook my head.

“Let go!” I tried to scream again.

The little boy disappeared, and I jumped out of the bathtub, wet towel still wrapped around my body, and crumbled to the floor. The blood was smeared all around me, and I looked at my arm. The blood was still there, too.

I whimpered, scrubbed at my arm until it was raw, and yet I could still see the blood.

Princess of the Light: A Success Story and a Sale! #POTL #99cents #TuesdayBookBlog

potlbanner

The story behind Princess of the Light is one that fascinates people and I never get tired talking about it.  Simply put, a homeless man in our town inspired us to write Princess of the Light.  I don’t know his name and I have moved to a different area of town so I don’t see him every day.  I call him the Walking Man because that is exactly what he does.  He doesn’t beg for money or hold up a sign.  He walks the length of the town I live in.

The first time I saw him I literally stopped in my tracks.  There was something about him that made me pause.  Maybe it was the fact that it was the middle of winter and here he was sitting on the curb smiling up at the sun.  He didn’t have a care in the world and the heat of the sun’s rays on his weathered face gave him joy.

I wondered who he was and what his story was.  He was someone’s son, brother, father, uncle.  What happened in his life to bring him to this point?

I went about my day but my thoughts were filled with questions about him.  Could I help him?  What if I had the power to help him?

The seed started growing and Princess of the Light was born.  As the days went by and I observed the Walking Man, I started showing him kindness.  I smiled and said good morning.  I left food, blankets and clothing for him.  With every action, I started to notice a change in him.  It was like he was no longer the forgotten man; he mattered.

So what’s the success story, you may be asking yourself?

The Walking Man is no longer homeless. Through your support of N. N. Light’s website and buying our books, we took that money, donated it to food banks and local homeless charities. We prayed every day for him and spread awareness about his plight. We supported our local government who built an apartment complex to get the homeless off the street. The Walking Man, we’re thrilled to announce, is living in an apartment and a contributing member of our community once again. He’s healthy, happy and the living embodiment of Light. Such a miracle and perfect for this time of the year.

With Easter, Passover and Spring right around the corner, I want to share this message of hope and rebirth with you. It’s never too late. YOU can make a difference and change your little corner of the world.

Spreading the Light is more than a fun catch phrase; it can be a reality.  Every town, city and country has people like the Walking Man.  They’re forgotten by society and the governments.  They’re in the dark.  Let’s spread our Light around the world and make these people matter.

Get your copy of Princess of the Light today and 100% of the proceeds go to help the homeless. Let’s create more success stories…

Joe Deacons is everything she’s ever wanted in a man. And as providence would have it, in a moment of great need, he’s the Warrior of Light–the one who can help her defeat the forces of darkness.

Not so simple when they confront Lisbeth, a demon hell-bent on usurping Than and Lucifer himself.  When Lisbeth wages war and several innocent people die, Mary must form an alliance with her enemy in order to destroy her.  But will this be a grave error or the choice that saves their world?

Excerpt:

Marie furrowed her brow and softly interrupted, “André is the Walking Man?”

I looked at Marie and asked, “You’ve heard of him?”

Marie nodded. “Of course. He is a staple of the Downtown area. There are a few groups I’m affiliated with that hand out food and clothing to those in need. He never comes to these events so I leave them by the area where he sleeps.” She paused, thoughtfully. “I just can’t believe that it is André.”

Joe cleared his throat and looked at his father. “What happened to André?”

Alfred sighed and after a moment said, “It really was the fault of that witch he was married to. She and her family treated him horribly. She was a gold digger and all she cared about was money and the prestige.”

Marie interrupted Alfred by saying, “I remember her. She was so mean to André and all she cared about was looking rich. Wealth is a gift—she just wanted it for a toy. She treated André so badly… and his mother-in-law was the worst. She would put him down all the time. In front of other people, no less.”

Alfred continued, “André was a good man and worked hard. He was working on a big project for the city. He worked night and day on the project and told me it was going to put Golden Lake on the map.

“He absolutely adored his daughter, too. I remember that clearly. She was his everything.” Alfred paused, apparently lost in his thoughts. With a sigh he said, “There was a scandal with the project, though, and André got fired. Soon after, Dara left him, took Katherine with her and André fell apart. He started drinking heavily and, without his daughter, his life fell apart.”

Joe looked at me and I fought to keep from throwing my hand over my mouth. There was purple fire in his eyes and I felt his anger. I already knew the story of André and I tried to smile at him.

I smelled burning flesh. Joe flashed in full armor fighting demons with a golden sword.

I gasped at the vision and brought my hand to my chest in shock feeling the key necklace, before I could stop the physical reaction. The necklace weighed heavily as did my heart. He would be fighting at my side soon.

Marie asked, “Are you okay, dear?”

Joe turned to look at his mother. He nodded and only said, “I never knew any of this.”

Alfred continued, “I am sorry, son, but you asked for the truth. This is what I know. André was sleeping at the office and drinking all the time. He was supposed to give a presentation to a client and was drunk. He got into a scuffle with his boss and rumor has it, André punched him.”

I feigned shock and said, “Oh my!”

Than is to blame. I don’t know how I know or what happened but I vow to the Lord that I will make Than pay, thought Joe.

I choked and almost spit out my drink. I just heard Joe’s thoughts! I had to set him straight and right away.

I cleared my throat and said awkwardly, “Joe, I think I left something in the car.”

Joe looked at me with eyebrows raised. “Excuse me, we’ll be right back,” I said with a smile.

I walked outside and knew that Joe was right behind me. When I reached the car, I whirled and said in a stern tone, “Are you trying to get yourself killed?”

Joe stopped mid-step and said, “What are you talking about, Mary?”

I ran into his arms and whispered, “You cannot take on Than by yourself! I heard your thoughts in there. Now, I don’t know how you know that it was Than who drove André to punching his boss but please promise me that you will not get revenge.”

I paused to catch my breath and remembered what Gabriel told me. “Joe, in order to defeat the darkness and not become dark ourselves, we need to have a pure heart. We are filled with the Light and our motives must always be to speak the Truth and spread the Light.”

Joe took several deep breaths while he held me. He stroked my hair and whispered, “I’m sorry, my angel. I didn’t mean to frighten you and you are right. It was just a momentary thought.”

I lifted my head and locked eyes with Joe. Tears filled my eyes but I was determined. I bit at my top lip and then whispered, “Promise me you won’t put yourself in harm’s way.” Hot tears spilled down my cheeks.

Joe wiped at them and said in a deep, reassuring tone, “I promise, Mary. I promise I won’t be a hothead and I won’t be rash.” Then, he laid his forehead on mine and whispered, “Please don’t cry, darling. Please.”

I nodded and whispered, “I would die if I lost you. Than will use you to try to get to me. You are my love, my everything.” My voice cracked. “I would die if I lost you,” I repeated.

Joe shook my shoulders a little and looked deep into my eyes. “Listen to me, Mary, you will never lose me! Do you hear me? I am by your side now and forever.”

Overcome with emotion, Joe kissed me.

The End is Coming… Raven’s Rise by @LincolnjCole #UrbanFantasy #Horror #TuesdayBookBlog

Raven's Rise - kindle cover

Title: Raven’s Rise

Author: Lincoln Cole

Genre: Horror/Urban Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Everything has come crashing down after the events of Raven’s Fall: barely anyone is left standing and the Church is blaming Abigail for the fallout.

Haatim and Dominick are struggling to understand how their worlds were flipped upside down so completely, but they are running out of time. The threat that began in the mountains is far from over. They need to find a way to survive what comes next and put a stop to the cult that is threatening their existence before it is too late.

Excerpt:

As soon as Matt Eicholt stepped inside his quiet little church in the center of Phnom Penh, something felt terribly wrong. The lights remained off, just as he expected, but he could feel the presence of someone else hiding in the room.

The mere fact that they hid from him filled him with concern. He couldn’t see anyone but could tell they hid there.

“Hello?” he called out in Khmer. “Who’s there?”

No response. He tried English as well, but still, no answer came. Probably kids hiding away from their mothers. He’d experienced situations like this many times in the past, finding children avoiding their schoolwork or chores, though not usually this late in the day.

No doubt, they hid from him as well, hoping he wouldn’t return them to their angry parents.

However, something about the situation made him worry, and even though wayward children seemed the likeliest scenario, something told him that this case differed.

Matt walked across the hardwood floor toward the front of the church and to the light switch. Wary and uncomfortable, he felt unsure what might be afoot but also afraid he would miss his dinner appointment.

He used the light spilling in through the open doorway to navigate between the wooden pews toward the front, keeping his eyes open for any trespassers.

He made it to the far side of the room and felt around for the switch. It took a few seconds for his fingers to find it in the darkness, and then he flicked it on.

Nothing happened. The room remained dark.

Suddenly, the door behind him swung closed with a crash, casting him into complete darkness.

A shiver danced across his spine, and he backed up against the wall, willing his eyes to adjust to the darkness. Someone stood inside the room with him, and a tinge of panic rushed through his body.

“Who’s there?” he asked in Khmer. “Come out where I can see you.”

“Why would I do that?” a woman asked in English from across the room. She sounded young, with a sultry voice.

“Who are you? Why are you in my church?”

“Maybe I came here looking for God.”

She sounded closer this time as if she’d moved across the room toward him. He listened but couldn’t hear any footsteps tapping across the wooden floor.

“He does hide in the most unexpected places,” the woman said.

“What do you want?”

“I want you, Matthew. You have no idea how much you mean to me.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you. You make the last piece of my puzzle. The light at the end of my tunnel. Matthew. I like your name. So Biblical.”

He backed away slowly, one hand on the wall. He aimed to move away from the approaching voice and head for a door at the back of the cathedral. One he kept locked normally, and that exited into a back alleyway.

His eyes still hadn’t adjusted to the darkness, and he bumped into a pew while he scrambled through the church, knocking it sideways to scrape across the floor.

“Where do you think you’re going?” she asked, a few steps to his left. “Our fun has only just begun.”

“Stay away from me.”

“I couldn’t stay apart from you any more than a moth can from a flame.”

Suddenly, the door to the church blasted open, pouring bright sunlight in once more. A wretched-looking woman stood in front of him, maybe two meters away. She appeared of Indian descent, though pale. Pockmarks and rashes covering her skin and face gave her a sickly appearance.

The woman turned toward the door and let out a laugh when the light came in.

“I wondered when you would show up.”

Matt glanced over. Another person stood the doorway. This one silhouetted by the sunlight, which made it impossible to make out the features or see the face.

“Matt, run!” the person in the doorway—a woman—yelled.

The newcomer’s arm flew up, and a thunderous roar of gunshots filled his tiny church. On reflex, he covered his ears and stumbled backward, trying to get away from the sound.

He glanced back at the first woman, the scarred and sickly one. She dodged back and shifted behind one of the pillars that held up the roof. Gunshots thudded into the area around her.

The woman moved with unnatural speed, gliding as much as moving. Matt watched her in awe, not even sure if she qualified as human. More rounds blasted into the church. They buried into the pillar behind which she hid, shattering off huge wooden fragments that went flying through the air.

She turned, looked at him, and let out a hissing sound.

“Run, Matt!” the newcomer screamed from the open doorway before firing off more rounds at the Indian woman. “Get out of here!”

Matt ran.

Meet Gabriel Bocapa and His Humorous Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon #books #FridayReads

Love Dark Comedic Fiction? We do, too, and when we first met Gabriel Bocapa, we knew we were in for a treat. His Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon series is hilarious and we highly recommend it (book one is only $.97). Anyway, Mrs. N sat down with Gabriel for an interview and discovered interesting tidbits about him. So, please give Gabriel a warm POTL Blog welcome. Take it away, Gabriel:

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you?

Franza Kafka, Edgar Allan Poe.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?

Jake Gyllenhal as Michael and Priyanka Chopra as Halima

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

I think the name for the titles of the books are very important. I chose the name Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon as a commentary on the idea that we live in a global world: We can see wars going on, destruction and suffering at the touch of a fingertip (internet, television) yet at the same we can be sitting in a mall eating ice cream. There is more to the title for this book than this, and if you read it and read carefully you might get more of the picture.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

It’d either have to be Conspiracy Theories Unveiled or Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In Hollywood making Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon into a movie.

Have you always liked to write?

Yes.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Don’t be afraid to write what you want. If someone doesn’t like your writing, who cares. They might just not get it.

If you didn’t like writing books, what would you do for a living?

I would be a scientist.

Is this your first book? How many books have you written prior (if any?)

I’ve written several books including “The Mansion” which is a collection of dark dystopian stories, and Love and Paranoia which is about a man with schizophrenia who goes on a journey to find love.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I’m currently working on a book about a schizophrenic superhero.

What is the biggest fib you’ve ever told?

Telling my mom I was sick but in reality I wanted to play Mega Man X on Super Nintendo.

Do you drink? Smoke? What’s your vice?

No drugs. Just Drinking Milk Teas and Eating Ice Cream.

What secret talents do you have?

Breakdancing.

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?

Europe.

What were you like as a child? Your favorite toy?

I was a shy child, yet considered very bright. I taught myself to read at the age of 4. I liked to play puzzles while others were watching t.v.  On the other hand, I was never good with my hands. I was never good at sports, tools, or crafts. My skills were always more on an abstract plane.

Meet Allen and Elaine from @BarbCaffrey’s Brand New Release #romance #LGBT #books

CF CI

An Interview with Allen and Elaine from CHANGING FACES

By Barb Caffrey

A lean, tall, dark-haired man of average looks comes in, sits down on a long, comfortable couch, and crosses his legs at the ankles. He seems nervous, but friendly.

“Hi,” he says. “I’m Allen Bridgeway, clarinetist, graduate student in Music at Willa Cather University, and the fiancé of Elaine Foster—also a graduate student at WCU. I’m partial to Weber, allergic to cats, and I’m thirty years old.” He smiles wryly, adding, “Is that enough detail for now?”

Then a shorter, rounder, beautiful woman of Hispanic descent comes in and sits next to him. After giving him a quick hug and a squeeze of the hand, she speaks.

“And as you may have guessed, I’m Elaine, Allen’s fiancée. Though I’m not quite what I appear. I might look female, and I always identify as female for whatever it’s worth—”

Allen butts in. “You’re a feminist scholar, love. How could you be anything else?”

Elaine gives him a fond look. “But I’m not straight, and more to the point, sometimes I feel more male than female.”

Allen shrugs. “Whatever you are, however you present yourself, I will always love you.”

Elaine blushes. “Good to know.” Then she turns to me, the interviewer—otherwise known as author Barb Caffrey, who wrote their story in the new romantic fantasy, CHANGING FACES—and says, “Can we get to the questions now? So we can get back to playing our clarinets and living our lives?”

“Of course,” I tell them. “What is your idea of perfect happiness?”

Allen and Elaine look at each other, smile, and say nothing for a long time. Finally, Allen husks out, “Any day with Elaine suits me fine.”

Elaine blushes again, nods, and squeezes his hand. Apparently she agrees.

Next, I asked them, “What is your greatest fear?”

“Living without Elaine,” Allen says right off the bat.

“Telling Allen who I really am, because once I do, he’ll leave,” Elaine says in a low tone.

Allen looks confused for one moment, until Elaine squeezes his hand. “I’ll explain later, love,” she says.

“What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?” Then I look at them both, and ask, “Can Elaine answer this first? Allen, you always jump in…”

Allen mumbles something, and motions with his hand to Elaine.

“Ah, I like it when he goes first,” she says playfully. “It gives me more time to consider my answer.” Then she turned serious. “I am often hasty, and while I try to think things through, sometimes I just don’t. This causes trouble, but I can’t seem to break the habit.”

“I like all your habits,” Allen said, giving her a sidelong look. Then, focusing on me, he added, “I am reserved. This makes it harder for me to open up to people, and it takes a long time for me to make new friends. That’s caused me a lot of trouble in my life, especially as musicians are supposed to be gregarious sorts and I’m just not.”

“Who you are is just fine with me, love,” Elaine put in loyally.

I raised an eyebrow, and told them, “I like you both. So stop all this nonsense and just answer the questions, will you?”

“But it’s so much fun to tease you,” Elaine said.

Allen just laughed.

These two. What could I do with them?

“All right. What is the trait you most deplore in others?” I asked.

Elaine went first again. “Hostility. I can’t stand it. And ignorance is a close second.”

“People who think the arts are silly,” Allen said after a long pause. “Without the arts, we’d not have any culture to speak of and we’d probably be brute beasts.”

“I never knew you felt that strongly, love,” Elaine said, squeezing his hand again. “But I like it.”

Allen blushed dark red.

“And in that vein…what do you consider the most overrated virtue?”

After a look at Elaine, Allen went first this time. “Charity. Because people who believe they are charitable often have problems with hypocrisy, and I can’t stand it. They also seem to think that they are the best people on the face of the planet, and that annoys me, too.”

Elaine nodded, but her answer was different. “I think faith is the most overrated virtue, because most people seem to think of it only as faith in the Higher Power, not as faith in yourself. And really, it should be both.”

“Interesting,” I told them. “Now, here’s an easy one. Which living person do you most despise?”

Allen and Elaine looked at each other, looked at me, and in one voice said, “Donald Trump.” Then Elaine continued, “That man never should’ve become President, and has caused all sorts of problems, especially for the LGBT community, of which I am one.”

“Donald Trump gives Americans a bad name,” Allen added. “I am embarrassed for our country. We should have Hillary Clinton as our President, right now.”

“So, would you say that Hillary is the person you most admire, then?”

Elaine nodded, saying, “Her work with women and children throughout her lifetime—not to mention the disabled—has been exemplary.”

“Personally, I admire Nelson Mandela more, but he’s passed away. I can say that, can’t I?” Allen gave me a worried look.

“Sure. Who doesn’t admire Nelson Mandela?” Then I smiled, and said, “Here’s another easy one. Who is the greatest love of your life?”

Both Allen and Elaine burst out laughing. “If we weren’t each other’s biggest love, we’d not be here, Barb.” Allen raised an eyebrow, but still looked amused.

“Yeah, why are you asking us this. You know better.” Elaine wagged her finger at me, playfully.

“All right. Here’s a more serious question, and it’s the very last one. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Elaine, you go first.”

“If I had the power, I’d allow my gender-fluidity freer rein. Some days, I would be fully male outwardly. Other days, I’d be fully female. Maybe I’d change during the day, for variety’s sake…that way, I wouldn’t feel so alien in my body all the time.”

Allen gave her a look of concern. “This is a tough one. When I was younger, I wanted more athletic talent. When I first met Elaine, I wanted to be bisexual like her, so we’d have more to talk about.”

“I never knew that,” Elaine interjected.

“You weren’t supposed to,” Allen muttered. “But I’m depressingly heterosexual.” He sighed. “Now, I think the only thing I’d change, if I could, is to be healthier. I had a gall bladder operation last year that should’ve been routine, but wasn’t because of a complication…and poor Elaine had to take care of me.”

Then, he smiled. “Thanks for interviewing us in our original bodies, by the way. It’s harder for us to explain who we are, looking like each other.”

“No problem,” I told them. “Glad to do it.” (If this throws you, gentle reader, you really need to go read at least the blurb, and possibly the sample chapters, of CHANGING FACES. And as it’s only ninety-nine cents/ninety-nine pence for an e-book for a limited time, it’s quite affordable. Really.)

Title: CHANGING FACES

Author: Barb Caffrey

Genre: Contemporary LGBT Fantasy-Romance

Publisher: Twilight Times Books

Book Blurb:

Allen and Elaine are graduate students in Nebraska, have been together for seven years, and are engaged. They love each other very much, and have many things in common. Both play the clarinet, are teaching assistants, are well-respected and seem to have their lives firmly on track. In fact, their life should be idyllic, but Elaine’s past includes rape, neglect, and abuse from those who should’ve loved her—but didn’t, because from childhood, Elaine identified as transgender.

When Elaine tells Allen right before Christmas, he doesn’t know what to do. He loves Elaine, loves her soul, has heard about transgender people before, but didn’t think Elaine was one of them—she looks and acts like anyone else. Now, she wants to become a man and is going to leave.

He prays for divine intervention, and says he’ll do anything, just please don’t separate him from Elaine. And in the form of a car accident, he gets his wish.

Now, he’s in Elaine’s body. And she’s in his. But both were injured, and Allen’s old body (with Elaine inside) is in a coma.

Allen can’t tell anyone who he is. But one thing’s certain: if Elaine can wake up, he wants to be with her. He doesn’t care what body he’s in, or that he, too, is now transgender.

Why?

True love matters so much to the universe, once you have found your soulmate, the universe will do anything to keep you together—even change your faces.

Excerpt:

Two angels decide to take a hand and help Allen and Elaine by changing their faces.

From the ether, I watched as Allen’s little car crashed into something. No one saw it but us, perhaps because of the dense fog along with the ice and snow. “What is that thing?”

“It’s a road grader,” Michael said absently.

“Is there anyone around to help?” Surely we couldn’t just leave them in this condition—could we?

“I thought I’d help them,” Michael told me, sounding deceptively casual. Then, just like that, he wore a human body again and stood directly behind Allen’s wrecked car—to human eyes, he now looked like a healthy, compact young woman. I wasn’t sure why he’d picked that particular form, but Michael liked variety. The light around his body danced with his usual rainbow prisms—what I thought of as his true form— before he said, “You could help, too, you know.”

Stung, I incorporated also, using the form I’d used at Jolene and Paula’s wedding months ago. “Will this do?”

“I hope so.” He turned to look at me; his blue eyes were grave, unchanging. “We have about two minutes, maybe three, before this car blows up.”

“Why?”

“They had extra gas in the back of the car in case of emergencies.” As he said this, he opened the passenger side door. Elaine’s head had hit the windshield so hard, the windshield had cracked; fortunately, her seatbelt and airbag had protected most of the rest of her body. She was still breathing, albeit shallowly. “Help me get her out.”

On this plane, we could not tap into any primal energy sources; at least, I couldn’t, or I’d risk an explosion. I was limited to what this body could do, as it was the only one I knew well enough to summon; fortunately, Elaine didn’t weigh very much, and we were able to get her out of the car. I picked up her purse and put it beside her, along with a blanket that had fallen to the floor, before racing back to help with Allen.

This was going to be much harder. Allen’s body was wedged in between the steering wheel and the bent, damaged door. The road grader was firmly on the other side; no help there.

“Why can’t we keep the car from blowing up?” I asked.

“I can only interfere so much. Now, help me with Allen!”

“How?”

“Get the other blankets out of the car, and put them on the ground. This is going to be tricky.”

While I hastened to do that, Michael reached inside the car. I heard the seat belt unlatch, and as I ran back to the car, I saw Michael start to pull Allen away from the steering wheel. Then, I don’t know how, Michael had pulled him backward, out of the car.

“He’s got a pulse. But he’s got multiple fractures, minimum,” Michael reported.

“We have to use their cell phones to call an ambulance.” As I blinked, he added, “Elaine’s phone has a pink cover. Get it and call 911—that’s for emergencies.”

I raced back to Elaine’s purse, grabbed her phone, and ran back. By this time, Allen was on the ground, but only a foot or so from the car. And there was something going on with the car, now…it looked unstable, to me, as an energy-being, rather than solid. I’d only seen this in the elderly, who were about to end their existence.

My unfamiliar fingers fumbled with the phone, but I was able to use it. I reported the emergency, said two people were on the side of the road after a crash, and gave the location. Before they could ask anything else, the phone went dead.

“Here. We need to get them to safety. Now!”

I helped Michael pull first Elaine, then Allen, about thirty feet. We did our best to protect their heads, but there wasn’t much time; we had to get them away from that car before it exploded.

Just as we got them both onto the nearby sidewalk, the car blew up. Even the foggy sky couldn’t hide that conflagration…surely someone would get here soon to take care of them. Right?

But before I could ask Michael anything, he yelled, “Now! Shift to the ethereal plane!”

I shifted planes, and saw Michael—now the Big Man, in his accustomed rainbow-prism form—dance over Allen’s body, then Elaine’s. “What are you doing?” I asked in pulse-speech.

“Changing faces,” he said succinctly.

“Huh?”

He took Elaine’s soul and bound it into Allen’s body, then put Allen’s soul into Elaine’s and bound it there as well. As the ambulance came, he told them, “Be well, children. This is the best I can do.”

“Why do this, though?” I asked. “It’ll disrupt so many things.”

“Separating them wouldn’t?”

“True…”

Songs of Insurrection by @JCKang804 Book Blitz #fantasy #IARTG #99cents

Songs of Insurrection
J.C. Kang
(Daughter of the Dragon Throne #1)
Publication date: January 6th 2017
Genres: Adult, Fantasy

Princess Kaiya’s voice could charm a dragon.

Had she lived when the power of music could still summon typhoons and rout armies, perhaps Cathay’s imperial court would see her as more than a singing fool. With alliances to build and ambitious lords to placate, they care more about her marriage prospects than her voice.

Only the handsome Prince Hardeep, a foreign martial mystic, recognizes her potential. Convinced Kaiya will rediscover the legendary but perilous art of invoking magic through music, he suggests her voice, not her marriage, might better serve the realm.

When members of the emperor’s elite spy clan– Kaiya’s childhood friend Tian and his half-elf sidekick (or maybe he’s her sidekick?)– discover mere discontent boiling over into full-scale rebellion, Kaiya must choose. Obediently wedding the depraved ringleader means giving up her music. Confronting him with the growing power of her voice could kill her.

EXCERPT:

CHAPTER 1

Not-So-Chance Meetings

If marriage were a woman’s grave, as the proverb claimed, sixteen-year-old Princess Kaiya suspected the emperor was arranging her funeral. Entourage in tow, she shuffled through the castle halls toward the garden where General Lu waited. Given his notorious dislike of the arts, the self-proclaimed Guardian Dragon of Hua had undoubtedly envisioned a different kind of audition when he requested to hear her sing.

After all, she was dressed like a potential bride.

She buried a snort. The Guardian Dragon—such a pretentious nickname. The only real dragon, Avarax, who lorded over some faraway land, might make for a more appealing audience. A quick trip down his gullet would spare her a slow death in a marriage with neither love nor music.

And it wouldn’t matter what she wore.

The gaudy dress compensated for her numerous physical imperfections, but stifled the only thing that made her special. How was she supposed to sing with the inner robe and gold sash squeezing her chest, in a futile attempt to misrepresent her woefully underdeveloped curves? The tight fold of the skirts concealed her lanky legs, but forced a deliberate pace. At least the short stride delayed the inevitable, while preventing her unsightly feet from tripping on the hanging sleeves of the vermilion outer gown.

At her side, Crown Princess Xiulan glided across the chirping floorboards. Kaiya suppressed a sigh. If only she could move with the nonchalant grace of her sister-in-law, or even the six handmaidens trailing them. She dug her nails into clammy palms. Through this choreographed farce, appearances had to be maintained, lest she embarrass her father, the Tianzi.

Chin up, back straight. A racing heart threatened to ruin her already meager semblance of imperial grace. Eyes forward. Servants knelt on either side of the looming double doors, ready to slide them open. She forced a smile, with her best approximation of feminine charm. If only she’d lived before Dragon Songs had faded into legend, she could’ve sent the realm’s victorious hero fleeing with the song he supposedly wanted to hear.

An aging palace official stepped into her line of sight.

Singular focus on the doors broken, she blinked. Her fluttering pulse lurched to a stop as she blew out a breath.

His blue robes ruffled as he tottered forward with averted eyes and a bobbing head. He creaked down into a bow. “Emergency, Dian-xia,” he said, using the formal address for her rank. “The Tianzi commands you to greet a foreign delegation in the Hall of Bountiful Harvests.”

Title: Two Worlds Collided

Author: Karen Michelle Nutt

Genre: Time Travel/ Rock Star Romance

Book Blurb:

Evie Reid, on a whim, agrees to travel back in time to 1997 to change bad boy Bellamy Lovel’s path of destruction. She’s smart with a college degree, but she’s still fan-girl crazy for the rock band, Civilized Heathens. Evie knows despite all Bellamy’s smiles and enthusiasm on the stage, he’s destined to end it all on one lonely night in a hotel room unless she can change his path.

Bellamy isn’t keen on having Evie as his personal assistant, hired by his band mates to watch over him, and keep him on schedule. However, there is something about the woman that sparks his interest, despite his best to ignore her. When darkness threatens to consume him, he realizes she may be the only light that will chase the shadows away.

Excerpt:

In this snippet, Evie and Bellamy officially meet for the first time.

She spotted Bellamy standing on the ledge a few feet in front of her. Fear rose up inside of her like a tangible force that urged her to go to his rescue. Her legs carried her swiftly and her hands grabbed his dress shirt with some kind of wild print on it, and she yanked him toward her.

Bellamy’s hands flew out in front of him as if to grab onto something to steady his fall. “What the–” Her cry of alarm muffled Bellamy’s curse when she realized he was going to land on top of her, but at the last millisecond, Bellamy twisted, grabbing hold of her as he fell onto his back with her sprawled on top of him in an unseemly manner. Her hair had come loose from the knot at the back of her neck. Her glasses were askew on her nose and she tried to adjust them as she pulled on her blouse, which had risen above her waist. Bellamy’s hot hands were on her flesh and for a moment she’d forgotten to breathe. She met his startled gaze and his lips pursed into a fine line.

“What is wrong with you, lady?” he said and shoved her away, not exactly rough but with a purpose to be as far away as possible from her.

She sat in a heap next to him, feeling a bit deflated that he didn’t appreciate her attempt to help. “I was saving you,” she said and lifted her chin.

“Saving me? Lady, you almost sent me tumbling over the edge.”

“I most certainly did not,” she sputtered. “And what were you doing up there, anyway? Who stands on a ledge and not think: Hey, I might fall to my death.” She rolled her eyes and that seemed to set him off.

His nostrils flared and he looked like he wanted to say more on the matter, but then he turned toward Leon, who stood there with his arms folded against his chest and his lips appeared to be twitching as if he were holding back a full out smile.

“You need to fire the security guard,” Bellamy stated, “that allowed this crazy broad up here.” He flew to his feet and brushed off his white pants that were smudged with dirt from the gravel rooftop. He flipped his curly hair away from his bright and beautiful blue eyes. God, he was handsome. A lean five-foot-ten, he appeared taller than he truly was, or maybe it was because she was still sprawled at his feet.

Leon cleared his throat. “Bellamy, I want you to meet your personal assistant.”

It took Bellamy a moment to realize what Leon meant, and then he shook his head. “No. Absolutely, no.” He narrowed his eyes on her, and she scrambled to her feet as graceful as she could, considering how she ended up there.

“I’m Evie Reid.” She extended her hand.

“True Love Matters to the Universe” Changing Faces by @BarbCaffrey #LGBT #Romance #ASMSG

portrait in garden

Excerpt:

“Look, love. You are the same person regardless of what you look like, whether you present as male or female. I will always love you. I’m not about to abandon you. I just don’t understand why, if Ruby Rose can stay in her body as a gender-fluid person, you can’t stay in yours.”

Elaine’s gloved hand reached out, but before we actually touched, she drew back.

“I wish I could explain it, Allen. It’s like a compulsion; now that I’ve told the truth about

myself, I need to find out where that truth leads. And I’m not sure where that path is

going to go.” Her deep brown eyes filled with tears. “I don’t want to deceive you. I love

you too much for that.”

“Honesty is important,” I agreed. “Even so, how do you know that it’s not just

your depression talking?”

“I am depressed,” Elaine admitted. “But it’s mostly because I don’t feel right in

this body. I have never felt right in this body, and the longer I go on in this body, the

more wrong I feel!”

The car had warmed up enough now, so I couldn’t delay this any longer. “Just—

don’t leave me, Elaine. Let’s try to talk this out…” I turned onto the dimly-lit street, and

started to drive.

Elaine sat, silently, next to me, for blocks. Then, she said, “If you can’t accept me

as myself, in whatever body I might have down the road, how can we stay together?”

“All I’ve said is that I don’t know if I can accept you in a male body. I would find

it hard to make love to another man.” I swallowed hard, adding, “I’ve tried to put

myself in your place, and I can’t do it. I don’t know how it feels to be transgender. I do

know how it feels to be in love with you. I don’t want to lose you. I’ll do whatever it

takes. But I want you to go to counseling—isn’t there a very long period of counseling

you have to go through, before you change sexes outwardly?” I seemed to remember

that from Chaz Bono’s story; that had been discussed often, a few years back. “And you

don’t like going to counseling as it is!”

“I’ve not run into good ones, thus far.” Elaine turned her head to look out the

window.

I glanced that way, and saw ice hanging from the trees just off the street. Was

that a rainbow prism at the edge of my vision? I told myself I was just seeing things,

and kept driving.

“Mind, Jolene asked me the very same thing, earlier…” Elaine said, sounding

very far away. “I told her I’ll start counseling after Christmas.” Then, she smiled wryly, a

brief twist of her lips. “She told me to marry you and stop putting you off, too.”

“I knew I liked Jolene.”

We shared a laugh. Then I blurted out what I’d been thinking all the while.

“Elaine, please—I need you in my life. I love you so much…I don’t care what you

look like; I care that you’re you. Please don’t leave me.”

She continued to stare out the window, and said nothing.

Oh, Elaine, I thought. How can you do this?

I turned my attention back to the road, which was getting worse by the second. It

was rutted, slippery, and almost impassable. Worst of all, a gray fog had started to

blanket the road. I started looking for places to safely pull off, but I didn’t see much. The

few gas stations were already closed, and there were a number of cars waiting in those

parking lots.

If this continued, we’d have to break out our emergency supplies from the trunk.

I’d packed blankets, food, water…we even had some spare gas in a gas can, just in case.

So we’d live through the night, even if we’d not be comfortable doing it.

“I don’t like this fog,” Elaine muttered.

“I don’t, either,” I agreed as I drove through another bank of icy grayness. “Are

you sure you can’t just come back home?”

“Not yet. I don’t know why.” Then Elaine added in a very quiet voice, “I’m sorry.”

I continued to drive, my gloved hands gripping the steering wheel. “Don’t be.

You can’t help what you are.” Then, before I lost my nerve, I added, “I love you. No

matter what you are, no matter how you present yourself. I want to be with you. I just

don’t know if I can handle you in a male body…you only told me about this tonight, so

how can you expect me to acclimate like that?” As we stopped at a light, I snapped my

fingers, even though inside my gloves, they couldn’t make a sound.

“You’re right. I can’t,” Elaine said.

Something about how she said that, though, made me nervous.

“I need time to figure myself out,” she said, biting her lower lip in concentration.

“Maybe you should take me to a hotel.”

“Why?”

“I’m asking too much of you. I have to be on my own.”

I felt like shaking her. “You need counseling, and we both need rest. Why don’t

we go back home instead?”

“I can’t be there right now. Not like this.”

“Dammit, Elaine! I love you. Can’t you see that? Why else would I be out on a

night like this, if I didn’t?”

“I love you, too, but this isn’t going to work.” The set of her jaw bothered me;

she’d obviously made up her mind.

“It won’t work only if you decide it won’t,” I told her, trying to keep the edge out

of my voice. “Why won’t you listen to me?” I snuck a peek at Elaine. The beauty of her

oval face, her liquid brown eyes, her pointed, determined chin…how anyone that

beautiful could want to become a man, I didn’t know.

“Let’s not argue, Allen,” she said wearily. “I can’t bear it.”

“Okay, then.” But while I’d stopped talking, I hadn’t stopped thinking. Why does

Elaine want to become a man? Why? What have I done wrong, that she should want this? I

must have done something wrong, something terrible, for her to want this…

Inwardly, I prayed, hoping that God existed and would hear me despite my

usual disbelief. Oh God, if you’re listening . . .please don’t take my beautiful Elaine away from

me. I’ll do anything, absolutely anything…

My reverie was broken when the car went into a skid. “Hang on!” I yelled, while I

turned into the skid. That should’ve gotten us safely off the road, albeit into a ditch…

but it didn’t work.

Instead, something big, something solid, was in the way.

Something that shouldn’t have been there.

“Oh my God!” Elaine screamed.

I tried to reach out to her, to reassure her, but I couldn’t. My body just wouldn’t

respond.

Before I could worry about that, the world went black.

Tales of the Faie by Diana L. Wicker @FeyronTales is a Fantastic #FridayReads! #SFF #YA

tales-of-the-faie

Title: Tales of the Faie: The Beginning of Days (Tales from Feyron – The Ripples of Power)

Author: Diana L. Wicker

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy, Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Every culture has fairy tales, the tales of legend and lore that children hear at bedtime that teach lessons of history and morality, the little bits of truth that keep a culture whole. The Realm of Feyron is no different. Join the youth as they listen to the tales of the beginning days of the Faie.

My Review:

“Every culture has fairy takes, the tales of legend and lore that children hear at bedtime…”

After completing her bestselling young adult fantasy series, Diana L. Wicker takes us back in time, to the beginning of the Realm of Feyron. Told through the Storyteller as campfire tales, we learn how each of the six Guardians came to be as well as some mythical occurrences (Tree of Life, the Mists, Crystal Tears and the Crystal Barge). While each story is short, their impact is huge.

I really enjoyed this collection of tales from the mythical world of Feyron. Fairy tales, no matter where you reside (real or imagined), are meant to teach morality and culture. Wicker takes the world she’s already created and delves into the Beginning. Her talent for immersing the reader in her world with rich and descriptive language is second to none. Like fantasy authors of the past, she transports you to Feyron and you find yourself wanting to stick around.

Now, if you haven’t read any of the Feyron series, this is a great place to start. You get a chance to hear the tales directly from the Storyteller and be introduced to the Realm of Feyron. I highly recommend it!

If you’re like me and a fan of all things fantasy, pick up this collection today. You’ll savor each story, like a delicious indulgence.

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy from the author in the hopes that I’d review it.

Diana Wicker

Author Biography:

Diana is an indie author living in the balmy climate of the US south with her family and fur babies (a dog, a cat, and a cantankerous rabbit). She enjoys reading, sewing, cosplay, being a studio mom for dance school, and RPG games. (She grew up with the old school paper/pencil style of gaming, but has transitioned happily to the highly interactive world of video games.) And, as if she had more time to spare, she has invested in Asian ball jointed dolls to customize into characters from Feyron.

The idea for Feyron started with a map, a place for her daughter to tell stories and live out storytelling role-playing adventures with her friends. The lore grew around the map, for every world needs lore if you are going to “live” there. The idea for a series, Tales from Feyron, grew out of the lore, for if you’re going to invent a world, you may as well play there too. The stories are continuing to grow through the various historical ages of Feyron and have just started to ripple outwards to the Worlds Beyond touched by magic. Legacy of Mist and Shadow is the first tale to venture to one of those worlds and has been awarded the BRAG Medallion by Indie BRAG. http://www.bragmedallion.com/about

The Guardian’s Witch by @RuthACasie #99cents #romance #books

TheGuardiansWitchFinal

Title: The Guardian’s Witch

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

England, 1290

Lord Alex Stelton can’t resist a challenge, especially one with a prize like this: protect a castle on the Scottish border for a year, and it’s his. Desperate for land of his own, he’ll do anything to win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the rumored witch who lives there.

Feared and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she’d never marry, but she is drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.

Despite his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can’t get the alluring Lisbeth out of his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him. Realizing they’ll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.

Excerpt:

The berries Lisbeth had gathered tumbled forgotten from her hands. A tremor touched her lips while the vision slammed behind her eyes. She didn’t doubt the vision’s truth. Sometimes a bright light, warm and comforting, accompanied the vision; other times the wind howled, cold and disturbing. Today, panic clearly filled the air.

She spun around trying to pinpoint a direction and abruptly stopped. Facing south, she licked her lips nervously and tasted the sweetness of fresh water. A rushing sound burst in her ears. The river. Her head snapped east toward the river path and she ran. As she careened down the narrow trail, the outstretched branches tugged at her dress, pulled off her shawl and clawed at her face and arms. She took no notice. The cadence of her footfalls beat out a mantra, not him, not him, not him. She rushed on faster, mumbling enchanted words under her breath.

She exploded out of the forest and stood on the riverbank as the bridge gave way, sending the horse and rider plunging into the angry current. Swiftly the horse surfaced and headed for shore with an empty saddle. She stood on the bank, still mumbling as she scanned the river until she glimpsed a clear red aura shining deep in its middle. Her relief was momentary when the blackness began to creep in. There wasn’t much time.

Quickly she pulled off her heavy dress and, wearing only her chemise, dove into the river. Save him was her only thought. Down she plunged kicking hard against the current. The usually clear water, now choked with mud, churned with debris. She screamed the words in her head and made her demands. In response, the current slowed and as the mud began to settle, a lifeless hand beckoned to her from below.

Until someone left their video game on “share” in a parallel universe and Conor de Sept Flambe’, the dark knight, stalked into the Mardi Gras Ball. Why was he here?

Eve of Chaos is book 3 in the Destiny Paramortals series. As Chaos approaches, new challenges arise, alliances are forged and enemies revealed.

Blurb:

Former Navy pilot, now “Sheriff” Jack Lang knows something’s afoot with Conor’s appearance in Destiny. Crazies are coming out of the woodwork, Paramortals are losing their abilities, and dispositions going AWOL, Jack wants to know who will be left standing beside him when the Para-moon begins. If Flambe´ is what Jack thinks he is, the good guys might have a chance. If not, they’ll be in deep… trouble.  Where’s an F-18 when you need one?

Excerpt:

For the rest of the evening, no matter where she was, if she turned her head, and looked across the expanse of revelers she’d find his eyes locked on hers, as if he’d been waiting for her to turn. Once, she turned back toward the bar but it was oddly clear, only Flambe´ standing there, framed by the oak counter, one of his swords standing in front of him on its hilt, the tip nearly reaching the Knight’s chest. He’d been cleaning it, shining and stroking the deadly edges with a cloth, so intimately acquainted with them that he wasn’t even watching.

His attention was all on her, the rims of his eyes lined like a predator’s, causing her to shiver briefly, but if that look was for her, he should know she was not prey. By her very nature, predators were her enemy. And still she felt the pull of pure heat as if they were connected in some way.

Sometime after Tempe and Jack left, the orchestra had suddenly stopped playing the zydeco music and the unlikely strains of a minuet had filled the room. Everyone looked up in surprise. Then as it had when he entered, the crowd split, giving the swordsman a wide berth as he strode purposefully across the ballroom floor toward Montana’s side of the room, his gaze locked on hers the whole way. Surely… she broke the contact to search the area around her, but there was no one nearby. He was coming for her. Her Dinnshencha reared up, readying for this formal meeting. It seemed impossible that she hadn’t actually met him yet.

His broad black tattooed shoulders led as his long strides moved closer, the flared pants hugging his powerful thighs, flowing around his calves and the swords catching the light overhead, making them flash with dazzling fire. He came to a controlled stop inches from her and the air seemed to leave the room, the sounds of feet shifting, voices, and laughter dying as he planted his feet in front of her.

The crowd waited. She waited. Not a muscle, pore or eyelash flickered while the room held its collective breath in expectation. The Knight’s arms rose, stretching the thick tattoos across his shoulders, giving the appearance of wings spreading, preparing to lift off. The room inhaled as one. Flambe´s eyes dropped; he brought one hand to his torso, and bowed. For a matter of seconds all she could see was his shiny black shoulder length hair and the pointy tips on the tattoos. The collective “ahhs” of the women in the room penetrated her awareness as he straightened again and spoke. “Lass, may I hav’ this dance?”

1-Click Vampire CEO Part 1 by @Erin_Bedford Right Now! #99cents #PNR #bookreview

510fl36n97l-_sy445_ql70_

Title: Vampire CEO, Part 1

Author: Erin Bedford

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Witches

Book Blurb:

This is part one of a three part series.

Wait until he gets a taste of her.

Tossed out by her coven, Abigail has to brave the human world and get a real job. With no skills outside of potions and spells, she magics her way out of unemployment and into the executive suite of Midnight Pharmaceutical.

But something strange is going on at Midnight. While her boss is the very definition of dark and mysterious, he makes her witchy sense tingle with his odd hours and the string of women leaving his office every day…

She’ll find out what’s happening at Midnight; if her boss doesn’t take a bite out of her first.

Part two coming out January 30th!

My Review:

“Wait until he gets a taste of her…”

Abigail is the daughter of the high priestess of the New Orleans coven and has just been thrown out for bad behavior (we learn the real reason later). Forced to find her own way in the world, she does it like the humans do and gets a job. With no actual experience or references to speak of, she buys an itty-bitty spell to get a job as a midnight secretary for a pharmaceutical company. Midnight secretary? Yup, they work round the clock and before she can blink, Abigail is the brand-new night secretary for the CEO, Sebastian.

From the moment she starts working for Sebastian, the air and Abigail’s libido is electrified. His voice is silk, his eyes the deepest sapphire blue and his air of confidence reduces Abigail to a pile of goo. But she senses there’s more to Sebastian than just “rock my world until I scream” … is it just his alpha maleness or something more sinister? And what’s with all the women coming and going at all hours? But when she discovers his secret, will he change her or just fire her?

A brand-new series from one of my favorite new authors, Vampire CEO Part 1 is intoxicating, smexy and reminded me of an adult version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Dark, mysterious vampire? Check. Tortured witch try to make it on her own? Check. Swoon-worthy alpha male? Check. Strong yet conflicted heroine? Double-check.

Vampire CEO moves fast with action, conflict, seduction, family issues and characters I felt an instant connection with. This is singular POV (Abigail) and while I would’ve loved to hear Sebastian’s POV from time to time, I love being inside Abigail’s world. The ending plunged me off a steep cliff but luckily, I’m counting the days until Part 2 arrives in my reader. A must-read and I highly recommend it!

Favorite Quote: “Never fear me, Abigail. I have no wish to harm you.” His words brushed against the side of her neck causing her to jump in her seat slightly. No sooner had she felt him behind her then he was gone. As his office door closed behind him, his next words made her shiver. “Not unless you asked me to.”

My Rating:  5+ stars

Beachcomber Investigations by @StephanieQueen is a Must-Read #RomanticSuspense! #books

Title:  Beachcomber Investigations

Author:  Stephanie Queen

Genre:  Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Beachcomber Investigations – Book 1 – a Romantic Detective Series

Ex-special ops legend Dane Blaise is desperate to recruit Shana George away from Scotland Yard. Neither of them are sure it’s a good idea to partner in the new venture, Beachcomber Investigations.

Before they decide, they’re thrown into a mission to stop a sniper from killing Acer, Dane’s old friend from the unit. But their volatile relationship may break them before the threat of a dangerous killer does…

Excerpt:

Shana darted a glance at Dane leaning on the doorjamb, oozing his ridiculous brand of sensuality, all casual and strong. Visits to the hospital were usually nausea-inducing events in her life experience, but this visit had a whole different vibe. With all her might she resisted crediting Dane with the reality-defying mood she felt standing in the middle of this room immune to the scent of antiseptics wafting around her.

Instead, she refocused and smiled at Cap—Captain Colin Lynch—lounging against his pillows, all bandaged and sporting a sling and a grin as if the bullet in his shoulder had been a movie prop and he was playing the role of the injured State Police Chief of Martha’s Vineyard—and playing that role poorly.

“You’re not taking your injury very seriously,” she said. He grinned wider. She squelched a long-suffering sigh, because Cap was not one of her younger brothers. Far from it. He was a hunk of a grown man if she was in the mood for admitting things. Her gaze slid back to Dane as he moved into the room. He eyed her back and gave her that sizzling stare.

Without thought, her chin rose and she moved closer to Cap as if he would protect her. As if Dane Blaise were a monster. He was—if you thought of legendary war heroes who saved lives routinely—including your own—as monsters.

No. The monster was in her mind. But he was a threat to her well-being. Overly dramatic maybe, but she felt as if he were wielding a knife, ready to cut her heart out and shred it to pieces. All figuratively, of course.

Cap said, “I don’t need to be serious. You’re plenty serious for all of us. I think I like your Nurse Nightingale side—it’s cute on you.”

“Don’t start with me. It’s probably the meds putting that grin on your face.” Shana reached out and touched his arm. He was a good man, and luckily the prognosis was good for his arm.

“The meds and the medals. Puts me in the mood to celebrate. I’m told there’s a commendation coming—maybe even a ceremony with some pomp and circumstance.”

“Don’t believe everything you hear.” Dane snorted.

“Not even if it’s the governor talking?”

“Especially then.” Dane smiled and shook his head. “Okay—so maybe you will get a medal out of this.”

“Shana will get one too,” Cap said. He smiled and took hold of the hand she had on his arm. An instant hot alarm went through her and she avoided Dane’s eyes, hoping to God he wouldn’t make a deal out of the touch. It was an innocent touch. She was almost sure of it. There had been nothing between her and Cap. Nothing beyond mild sparks that flashed like firebugs more than fireworks.

Nothing like the atomic sparks between her and Dane.

Sally From Planting the Seeds of Love Sits Down With MRS N #romance #ASMSG #IARTG

PTSOL

Mrs. N: It’s my great pleasure to introduce you to one of my favorite characters, Sally Rayton. She’s the leading lady in Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella.

Sally: For Pete’s sake, you’re going to have them think I’m a celebrity, like Kristin Kreuk. I’m just a normal girl trying to figure out what I want to do with my life.

Mrs. N: This was your idea, Sally. Now’s not the time to be modest. These fine readers want to know more about you. (pauses to look down) Now then let’s start with the first question. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Sally: Hmm, I used to think that opening my own café in the city, away from the Rayton Farm and all the gossipers, was my idea of happiness.

Mrs. N: And now?

Sally: Now, I’m conflicted. I mean, on one hand I have Trevor and life with him in the city is perfect. We make the perfect couple and both have our sights set on becoming a success in the city. But then there’s Jack…

Mrs. N: Ah yes, Jack, the sexy boy next door who’s loved you since you were little.

Sally: (rolls eyes) You always bring that up. Yes, Jack’s my best friend and I guess he could be considered sexy, although I don’t see him that way.

Mrs. N: You don’t?

Sally: Well… maybe a little. (clears throat nervously) Can we move onto the next question?

Mrs. N: Sure… What is your greatest fear?

Sally: Oh, that’s easy, ending up like my sister. My sister got pregnant when she was fifteen, ran away from home with the Mayor’s son and hasn’t been heard of since.

Mrs. N: Why is that a fear of yours?

Sally: You should realize that since my sister was six years older than me, the gossipers reminded me on a daily basis what a disappointment she became and an embarrassment to the Rayton name. See, we’re one of the oldest families in the county and well-respected. But my sister messed up and people used her misfortune to make themselves feel better. I vowed when I was fifteen, I would NEVER allow people to talk that way about me.

Mrs. N: Good for you. You’re a strong woman and I admire that trait in you. What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Sally: I hate liars. I’m a big girl. I’d much rather someone speaks the truth to me than lie. I guess I learned that from my grandfather. I remember when I was about six years old, I chased rabbits into the woods behind the barn. I knew I wasn’t allowed back there but I did it anyway. When it was time for supper, my grandfather asked me where I’d been. I lied and told him I was off playing in the wheat field. He scolded me for not only going back into the woods (which he saw from the barn window) but lying about it. “Never lie, Sally, especially to me. It’s the worst thing you can do.” I never forgot and adopted his view on lying.

Mrs. N: I already know the answer to this next question. What is your greatest extravagance?

Sally: Oooh, my books. I love books and have a nice collection of leather-bound classics. Trevor gave me a first-edition of one of my favorite books and it was the nicest birthday present I’ve ever received.

Mrs. N: How lovely. That must’ve cost him a pretty penny. First editions are expensive but even more so in hardcover.

Sally: I don’t know how much it cost but evidentially he thought I was worth it.

Mrs. N: No need to be defensive, dear. I was merely pointing out a fact.

Sally: I’m sorry, I’m a little touchy when it comes to money.

Mrs. N: It’s okay, I know how much Trevor means to you. Let’s move on to the last question. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

Sally: (Laughs) You’ll think it’s funny but I’d love to come back as a bunny. They’re soft, fluffy and hop around the garden finding food to nibble on. Think Peter Cottontail, that’s me.

Mrs. N: (Laughs) Only it would be Sally Cottontail in your case. Thank you, Sally, for sitting down for a few moments and chatting with me.

Sally: It was my pleasure.

Mrs. N: If you’d like to find out more about this fascinating love triangle (Sally, Trevor and Jack), now is a great time to purchase Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella.

Title: Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella

Author: N. N. Light

Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult, New Adult Romance

Blurb:

Torn between two men, Sally must follow her heart and decide if love will lead her to the city or the countryside.

Twenty-Two year old Sally Rayton returns to the family farm she deserted four years ago to bury her grandfather. Her plan: to settle her grandfather’s estate and return to her life in the city with her boyfriend, Trevor Mattson.

Her childhood friend, Jack Smith, has other ideas.

Jack convinces Sally to transform the farm into a brewery and fulfill her grandfather’s dream while keeping the Rayton Farm in the family.

Excerpt:

“Jack, thank you so much for the lift into town,” a woman replied behind Sally. “Let’s grab some lunch before we shop.”

Sally froze. She stared at Linda who shook her head. What was Jack doing with a woman in town?

“Here, let me take your coat, Emma,” Jack said.

Emma? mouthed Sally to Linda.

“She’s the daughter of Lonnie and Mary Beth.” Linda gave Emma the look-over and scoffed, “She can’t be a day over sixteen.”

“What do I do?” Sally panicked. Normally she didn’t care what Jack did or who he went off with. Curiosity got the better of her and she turned around.

Emma stood five foot three with curly blonde hair and innocent green eyes. Her figure was slim with curves in all the right places. Sally narrowed her eyes as Emma stood on tiptoe to kiss Jack on the cheek.

Fuming, Sally turned around. Linda chuckled.

“What?”

“You better tone down your jealousy, darlin’. You’re shooting darts everywhere.”

Sally gritted her teeth.

“I’m not jealous. If Jack wants school girls kissing him, what do I care?” She took a deep drink of her coffee, draining the cup. She slammed it down.

“Simmer down, here they come,” whispered Linda. She waved to Jack while Sally swore under her breath.

“Well, fancy meeting you two here,” Jack drawled.

Without looking up Sally retorted, “I told you I was coming into town today.”

Linda kicked Sally’s leg under the table. Sally plastered a smile across her face, greeting Jack and Emma.

“Yes, what a coincidence.” Sally noticed Emma looping her arm in Jack’s and snuggling closer.

“I was on my way into town to pick up those parts we ordered for the tractor when I ran into Emma walking by herself in the snow.” Jack smiled. Emma squeezed his arm.

“He pulled over and offered me a lift into town. Isn’t he a gentleman?” cooed Emma. Jack patted her hand.

Sally’s chest constricted at the sight of the two of them acting all couple-y. She stared into his twinkling eyes. Oh God, is he laughing at me? Emma can’t have him. He’s mine. Wait what?

“So,” Linda broke the strained silence. “I have to go powder my nose. Emma, would you care to join me?”

“What’s that?” Emma looked confused.

Linda laughed. “It’s the bathroom, dear sweet child.” She stood up, untangled Emma from Jack and guided Emma away from the table.

Jack sat down.

“What’s with you today?” he asked.

“Nothing.” Sally cleared her throat.

He raised an eyebrow.

“Really!” A few diners turned to stare. Sally flushed with embarrassment. She didn’t mean to talk so loud. She looked everywhere except in Jack’s direction.

Jack observed Sally as she fidgeted, first with her coffee cup then with the silverware. His gaze unnerved her and she practically jumped out of her chair when he placed a hand over hers. Electricity flew up her arm while warmth filled her core. Butterflies raced around her stomach, only she didn’t feel sick; she pulsed with life, like never before.

“Sally…look at me.”

Sally shook her head.

“You’ll only laugh at me.”

Jack’s thumb caressed her hand gently, causing her breath to hitch.

“You know I’d never laugh at you. Laugh with you, definitely, but never at you.”

Sally lifted her gaze to meet Jack’s loving eyes. He slid his fingers between hers, never breaking eye contact. Sparks flew between them. He moistened his lips with a flick of his tongue. Her gaze dropped to his lips.

“Please tell me. I’m begging you,” he whispered.

Unable to think clearly through the fog of desire, Sally tilted her head to one side. Her skin vibrated with heat while her nerve-endings jumped at the slightest caress.

“Tell you what?” she whispered. Her throat dry, her breathing shallow, she wet her lips with her tongue. She was under a spell and everything fell away except for Jack’s passionate eyes.

“Tell me what my wasted heart needs to hear.” His eyes flashed. “Tell me Emma made you jealous.”

Sally started to nod but Emma interrupted.

“What are you guys talking about in hushed tones? Crops and stuff?”

Jack groaned. He dropped Sally’s hand as if it burned him, causing the water glasses to jostle.
