Book Blurb

Ex-CIA agent turned suburban scout leader, Merry Wrath, is just trying to live a normal, quiet life. But all that goes out the window when a convicted traitor (who’s inconveniently not in his prison cell) dies on her doorstep, and an obese cat, who bears a disturbing resemblance to Hitler, decides to move in.

To make things worse, it’s time for the annual troop cookie sale, her new boyfriend’s old college flame shows up to win him back, and someone’s shooting at Merry in the frozen foods section of the grocery store. Is the assassin after her or the cat? Is Riley, her hot former CIA handler, hitting on her? Is Rex, her boyfriend, going to dump her? Will she sell enough cookies to take her troop to Winter Sniper Camp? If Merry doesn’t find answer to these questions soon, it may be too late!

Excerpt

As a former CIA operative, I’ve heard a lot of statements that have chilled me as though I had a foot-long icicle down my throat while sitting naked and wet on an ice floe. (By the way—don’t go to Greenland. Ever.) Things like, Open up! It’s the police, and we have a flamethrower! and Tell me the code or I’ll have to use this pair of pliers on your eyelids. All terrifying under normal circumstances, but throw in the Iranian secret police or a Venezuelan death squad dressed as circus clowns, and they have a smidge more gravitas.

But nothing…nothing compares to what I was just told.

“What do you mean we have to sell cookies?” I asked Kelly with a slight tremble in my voice. “To people? On purpose?”

My best friend and co-leader rolled her eyes. “Girl Scout Cookies. Our troop has to sell them.”

“Why on Earth would we want to do that?” I asked, backing up against the kitchen wall. I was starting to regret never having put in hidden panels with weapons around the house. But then Kelly would just laugh at me if I pulled a garrote on her.

“Because it’s a fundraiser for us and for the Council.” She pointed to the stack of order forms and the colorful brochure showing the prizes the girls get for selling so many boxes. I started flipping through the flier. Tiny pewter owls? Why does a little girl need one tiny pewter owl? Unless the purpose is to melt it down into one tiny, pewter bullet—then it sorta makes sense. And what’s with all the sticker books? Diabolical! I can only see a child’s access to 101 stickers turning into a nightmare of epic proportions. Oh wait! Dora the Explorer stickers! I looked up at my Dora bedsheet curtains and cringed. I really need to buy drapes.

“How do we sell cookies?” I asked. “Set up a store somewhere?” I had no idea how something like this worked. It kinda sounded like a scam, actually. Selling certain cookies only one time a year. Give them a taste, and then demand turns into desperation. Hmmm…also diabolical. I knew international villains who could learn something from the Girl Scouts.

“We go door-to-door,” Kelly sighed. “Take the forms to work. Call our friends and beg or blackmail them.”

Definitely a scam. I shook my head. “I don’t have any friends besides you, Rex, and Riley.” I wondered if I had enough blackmail material to get Riley to take the form to Langley to sell among the other spooks. I mean, I had some good stuff (like photos from the time he overused self-tanner for a job on the Riviera and looked like an Oompa Loompa), but did I have enough?

“Wait!” I said as I studied the form. “People have to give their names, addresses, and phone numbers?” No one in the CIA would do that. We can’t even tell spouses and children what we do for a living.

“You’ll have to do it.” I shoved the whole mess toward my best friend and troop co-leader. “I’ll do the behind the scenes work. Like the incentives and inventory, fear and intimidation, blackmail sales, wet work, and stuff.”

Kelly rolled her eyes. I got the distinct impression she wasn’t taking me seriously. “No wet work—no spy stuff! We’re just selling cookies!”

I winked at her. “Right.” I placed my index finger on my lips and looked around. “Just selling cookies.” I winked again for emphasis.

Kelly rolled her eyes and sighed the sigh of 100 martyrs. “Look, we have to do it. I know you don’t want to. But it’s non-negotiable. If you want to do all the things you’ve planned with this troop and you don’t want to pay for it yourself, we have to do this fundraiser.”

She put her hands on her hips, a sign I knew meant that this conversation was over, and I had lost. And she was right. Even if she wasn’t. Kelly was right. She always won.

“I’m not planning anything expensive…” I moped.

My best friend’s right eyebrow bent upwards. “Oh really? What about the winter survival skills campout?”

I shrugged. “That’s a totally legit idea.”

“In Newfoundland?” Kelly asked. “And your equipment list is ridiculous.” She numbered the items off. “Snow shoes and cross-country skis for each girl…sleeping bags with a 50-degrees-below-zero rating…white sniper camouflage suits…”

“Hey!” I protested. “Those are important!”

Kelly ignored me. “And I’m not even going to mention flying in some Israeli Mossad agent you know to teach a weekend-long class on self-defense to second-grade girls.”

I lifted my chin and sniffed. “It’s called Krav Maga—and he’s the world’s foremost expert. How do you expect these girls to survive a kidnapping attempt?”

Kelly narrowed her eyes. Uh-oh. Why did I have to bring that up?

“Well, I guess they could’ve used that a few months ago when you dragged them into a gunfight with the CIA and local SWAT team.”

I slumped. She was right. Totally my fault there. I still felt bad for that one. It didn’t matter that the girls thought it had been the best day of their lives.

Kelly’s voice softened. “Look, all I’m saying is that these things cost money. And we can raise some of that by doing what Girl Scouts have been doing for a century—selling cookies.”

“Fine,” I grumbled. “But you have to be in charge.”

Book Blurb

The ghost of the Pungo Witch meets a shattered heart.

Chloe Hicks’ life consisted of an egocentric ex-husband, a pile of bills, and an equine business in foreclosure until a fire destroys the stable and her beloved ranch horse. What little hope she has left is smashed after the marshal suspects arson. She escapes the accusing eyes of her hometown, but not the memories and melancholy.

Jackson Hahn, Virginia Beach’s local historian, has his eyes on the mysterious new woman in town. When she enters his office, he is struck by her haunting beauty and the raw pain in her eyes. Her descriptions of the odd events happening in her bungalow pique his curiosity.

The sexy historian distracts Chloe with the legend of a woman wrongly accused of witchcraft. She is drawn to the story and the similarities of events that plagued their lives. Perhaps the past can help heal the present. But danger lurks in the shadows…

The legend of the Witch of Pungo is based on a historical figure.

Excerpt

“Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men.”

Late February 2006

Four Seasons Ranch Shawneetown, Southern Illinois

Martha Graham

Chloe bolted up, willing the fog in her head to dissipate. The bed sheets were twisted around her ankles. Sweat trickled down her back. The terror froze her limbs while she struggled to calm her thudding heart and listen for the sound all horse owners dread. But it was the smell that made her realize this was not a terrible dream.

Smoke.

Instinct took over and she scrambled from the four-poster, making a beeline for the back door and the barn. Her toe smacked against the corner of a wall as her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Oh god, not my babies. Not Bunny. Panic weighed down her legs as her bare feet hit the gravel. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. She tried to run down the long driveway, her eyes riveted to the red-orange flames shooting up into the black sky. Paul, her trainer, emerged from the darkness, his signature white hat on his head, his face colored yellow from the fiery glow. He signaled for her to take the front of the building as he disappeared around the back.

The frigid night air slapped her awake, but a horrifying screech from a panicked horse kicked in her adrenaline. Chloe reached the big, sliding doors and tugged them open. Heat smacked her face, and the smoke assaulted her lungs. Coughing, tears running down her cheeks, she slid back the bolts and opened the stall doors. On the other side, Paul’s voice faintly reached her over the crackle that filled her ears.

“Hiya! Move it, move it.”

The fire had consumed the other half of the barn where the arena was located. Above her was the loft, filled with winter hay and the last of her savings, now adding fuel to the already intense blaze. She pushed the thought from her mind as the flames shot through the center of the alleyway and the arena caved in.

Grabbing one of the lead ropes that hung at each door, she smacked the first horse on the rump and sent him flying out of the barn. The first three horses on each side followed their stable mates into safety with little persuasion. But Duchess, her mother’s old mare, wouldn’t budge. Chloe threw the lead rope over her neck and forced a calm tone. “Easy, girl. That’s my girl. Walk on, now. Walk on.”

The old horse snorted and pranced but followed her out of the stall. When they neared the opening, she withdrew the rope and whacked Duchess’ hindquarters. With a leap, the horse disappeared into the gray haze. The acrid odor of scorched hair and burnt wood filled her nostrils. Embers popped. She felt her cheek blister and wiped at it with her shoulder, while leading two more horses out by hand. She could hear BW’s shrill bark and knew he was herding the animals into a paddock as she sent them out.

Crack!

Above her, a beam gave way and formed a fiery V. The horses must have sensed it also because they lunged ahead, snapping Chloe’s shoulders forward. She struggled to maintain her balance but fell to the matted floor, her knees striking the hard rubber. A boom behind her sent a spray of sparks, and pain shot along her backside. From the corner of her eye, she saw a strand of her hair spark. She beat at her neck frantically, putting it out with her bare hand. The heat was sweltering now. Images wavered in the flames that licked at the dry timbers of the remaining stalls and the heavy beams above.

Scrambling to her feet, Chloe ran outside into the frigid night and stumbled down the drive to help Paul. As she reached the other side of the barn, she doubled over as a coughing spasm racked her body. Hands on her knees, gasping to pull air into her tight chest, she heard him yelling over the crackle and whinnies.

“Bunny won’t leave the stall, and won’t let me near her foal.”
“What about Jack?”
“He’s good. C’mon, the roof is gonna give.” His hand tightened around her arm and pulled with such force her feet almost left the ground. Plunging back into the smoking hell, they entered Bunny’s stall and found the foal in the corner.

“Paul, I’ll get the foal then Bunny will follow.”

Another loud snap from above. She grabbed the lead rope dangling from the horse’s halter and handed it to the trainer. Running a palm down her mare’s neck, she spoke soothingly, “Atta girl, Bunny. There’s my girl. Let’s get your baby out of here.” The mare’s ears perked at her voice and words. Chloe tossed a rope around the foal’s neck and pulled. The baby gave in to the pressure and followed Chloe out.

Behind her, a loud, splintering crash was followed by a shrill squeal. Her stomach twisted as she turned to see Paul pulling on the lead rope. A fiery beam pinned Bunny as she thrashed, her legs flying in the air. One hoof caught the man in the head, and he crumpled to the ground.

Fighting for air, her chest a tight ball of agony, Chloe stumbled back in and grabbed Paul under his arms. BW appeared at her side. Together, they dragged him out of danger. With the last of her strength, she shuffled backwards until her feet tripped on something solid. She fell, his body tangled in her legs as they both landed with a thud.

A sob ripped at her raw throat at the sound of a muffled shriek. Tears spilled down her burning cheeks as she shook the lifeless body on top of her. BW licked at his master’s face. Chloe collapsed, her hand still on Paul’s chest, finding hope in the slight rise and fall of his shallow breathing. In the back of her brain, the sound of sirens wailed faintly. Above her, a shadow loomed. Mike? How did he get here so fast? And then her world went black.

Excerpt:

“I’m going to come straight out and ask,” Heidi said, pausing from filing her nails. “Do you want a hug? We could just sit here and cry for the morning if you want? I’d deal with anyone who tried to interrupt.”

I chuckled lightly as I started the process of extracting my outer layer of clothing and readying myself for a morning of making beds and cleaning up after a bunch of strangers. “No, thanks!”

“We can find a minibar to raid if you want?”

“I don’t think so.”

“A regular-sized bar then, if you insist!”

“Did Mel message you?” I asked, pulling on the ugly grey tabard and switching my shoes for a pair of well-worn Crocs.

“Only like a thousand times,” Heidi said, swivelling to sit upright on the couch. “She told me to look out for you today. As if I don’t look out for you every day! She’s actually driving me a bit crazy. You know she had the cheek to invite me over for dinner tonight?”

“She is awful sometimes,” I said, deadpan. “What a cow.”

“But why does she think I need an invitation? Is she trying to make a point about all the times I come around without being invited? Like every Friday night for the past ten years! I’m family. Why do I suddenly need an invite?”

“Well, you’re not actually family,” I reminded her.

They’re your family, and I’m your family, so I’m related to them through you.”

“Just two small flaws to that equation,” I said flatly. “I’m not related to them or you!”

“I’m your best friend!” she said, outraged. “We’re bound by the knowledge of each other’s deepest secrets and most embarrassing moments. It’s more of a tie than blood, that is. And of course Mel and Rob are your family. You say the weirdest things sometimes. I don’t know why you insist on identifying as a poor little orphan girl.”

“I don’t!” I spluttered. Heidi stared at me, her eyebrows at odd angles. “I’m not even an orphan,” I mumbled. “I have a father somewhere.”

Heidi settled herself back into the couch. “Let’s talk about him.”

“Let’s not.” Sometimes I wished I’d never mentioned my father to Heidi. The snippets of information I’d found out about him before Mum died had played on my mind for a while, and I’d confided in Heidi at the time. I still knew little more than his name. Heidi had been more excited by the revelation than me. She’d spent time searching for him on the internet but hadn’t found out much, other than that he still lived in Australia – where my mum had met him. Heidi had wanted to get on the first plane and go track him down. The more Heidi encouraged me, the more I laughed it off as a crazy idea. After all, I’d managed perfectly well without a father for twenty-one years; why did I need one now?

Because you don’t have a mother any more, the annoying voice inside my head reminded me.

Not All Dark Heroes Are Bad Boys… Luc (Men of Honor, Book 2) by @LiviaQuinn #romance #books

Luc MOH

Not all tall, dark and dangerous heroes are bad boys…

As romance readers, we always hear about the dark heroes, the bad boys, the tortured souls. But what about that guy who fairly shines from within with his easy-going nature, whose values of integrity and honor are so deeply engrained that it isn’t reflected as ego or ulterior motives. This is Luc, the hero of his own book, Luc, Men of Honor, book 2, just released. Luc is one of my favorite heroes in my books. I hope you love him, too.

Title: Luc, Men of Honor, book 2

Author: Livia Quinn

Genre: Contemporary Military Romance

Blurb:

Was he a hero, or a pretender?

The first time Delilah Burke saw Luc was at the crime scene, and she assumed he was a certain type¾tall, dark and dangerous, and a criminal—because he looked the part. She’d been wrong. But since he was dressed like a mercenary and appeared to be aiming his gun at another man and the cashier, how was she to know? Under the circumstances a careful cop doesn’t presume or assume. Del had followed protocol.

Luc relaxed as the cop’s boot pressed him down on the grimy floor of the small grocery. But then her cornflower blue eyes peered upside down into his and his stomach lurched. She’d eventually figure out he wasn’t the perp and instead had thwarted the robbery. As he watched the intriguingly beautiful cop command those around her, he decided she was just what he’d been looking for. But Luc’s part-time job required some unusual costumes and equipment. When she found out he was neither a criminal or a hero, would she listen to his proposition?

With each day that passes, Del finds the former Naval officer to be almost too good to be true. Then trouble arrives from Luc’s past and Del faces a choice¾believe the evidence against him, or trust her heart.

For this week only, the first book in the series, Ridge, Men of Honor will be $0.99 10/1-10/8

Excerpt:

Luc ran his hand through his hair. He’d be glad when this shoot was over. He clomped down the hallway in the heavy boots to his dressing room.

“Lu-uc,” Mercy whined, “we could practice during the break.” The damn woman had followed him to the wardrobe room. He sighed. This particular shoot had taken twice as long as others for Roger. He didn’t want the photographer thinking he couldn’t do his job. He was afraid it was going to come to embarrassing the woman—if that was even possible. Who would believe him if he said he didn’t want the attentions of a woman with Mercy’s looks and sex appeal?

Mercy’s antics were getting to him more today. And it was Delilah Burke’s fault. Delilah. Her name suited her. He’d only gotten a hint of her beauty in that uniform, but…

“Damn it, Mercy.” He’d been trying to get into the wardrobe room, but when the hall emptied she’d twined her arms around his neck from behind and pushed herself against him, rubbing his back with her hard…fake…breasts. With his cheek pressed against the door, he ran through his options.

Luc knew enough women that some might consider him an expert. He appreciated and respected them too much to ever use force against one. But Mercy Love was unlike any of the other women in his life, and he was getting desperate. She had him in an awkward position, and she knew it. If she persisted, the only way he’d be able to get her off of him was to toss her against the opposite wall. Then she’d make a scene and accuse him of using his superior strength and size to assault her. He’d heard about her from a friend over at Victor Films. She was trouble. This would be his last shoot with her if he had anything to do with it. “If you don’t leave me be…”

“Oh, shut up, Luc. You’ve been making eyes at me, rubbin’ that hard body against mine. I know you want this.” Her hand moved down to cup his groin.

He reached down and grabbed her wrist. “Enough. I mean it.”

She ignored him, grinding her pelvis against his butt. “Oooh, the big man wants me to beg. Pleeaase, Luc. I can have you begging for it in just ten minutes. Give me a chance, please,” her voice whined and her other hand roamed.

The bitch was too much. “I’m. Not. Interested.” He spun her around and crossed his arms over her chest, his only option, but a big mistake.  Now his groin was taking the abuse, and much as he was becoming disgusted with himself, he was aware that only a dead man would be able to remain unaffected by her antics. He was stronger than her, though. He should be able to end this somehow.

“Uh, excuse me. Do you know where I might find Luc Larue?”

Luc stilled. But Mercy was good on the fly. She jerked a hand free and then it was in his hair. “Luc, honey. I know you want me bad, but a ten-minute break just isn’t enough time to do a girl justice. Let me go freshen up and we’ll take this up after the shoot.”

Luc released her wrist and all five-nine of lusciousness slithered away. Like a snake in Regency clothing.

Delilah Burke stood in the hallway in her cop uniform staring first at the woman flouncing away and humming. Then she turned narrowed eyes on him.

“Well. That was certainly…”

“Shocking?” Luc asked, resigned.

“Entertaining,” she said.

“Embarrassing,” he said.

She raised one eyebrow. “I’m not embarrassed.”

Luc, Men of Honor book 2, was previously published as Hard Days Knight but the series has been rebranded to better focus on the heroes and heroines commitment to country and community.

A Must Read for Fans of Love — Poetry of Love is on Sale This Weekend Only! #99cents #IARTG

poetry-of-love-the-engagementyear-jpg

Poetry, especially love poetry, is nothing more than emotions on a page. Poems don’t have to follow certain rules or format, just honest and truthful. During our engagement, Mr. N worked 18 hours a day and we didn’t get a chance to see each other much. I’d miss him and after the millionth time of letting him know I wished we could spend more time together, he wrote this poem:

Our Love

Our love exists in so many ways

Even when parted I feel you

I long for your gaze

Knowing our love is true.

When in the heaven of your arms

I feel our love’s warmth surround me.

Your grace, beauty and charm

Leave me gasping breathless in serenity.

The pureness, sweetness and sincerity

Our so perfect love

Oft compels me to my knees

To thank our Lord above

For our love.

Pretty amazing, huh? We’re examples that true love, courtship and soul mates exist and this book is a collection of honest-to-goodness poems Mr. N wrote to me. It’s not fancy prose but naked emotion about our engagement and our journey from girlfriend/boyfriend to wife/husband.

New Review:

“What a touching book of love. The poetry is heartfelt and full of love. Each one shows how much he was looking forward to his future with her. The poems are in freestyle and are direct from the heart. A must read for fans of love. It will make you jealous that your husband to be didn’t write all these wonderful words about you and your future.” – M. Fullington (Amazon)

Consider our collection of love poetry. It’s a modern-day courtship, 100% honest and for this weekend only, 99 cents!

I had been searching for love my whole life. It took the opening up of the world via technology for me to find my soulmate. Once I laid eyes on her, at the arrivals gate, I knew I was never going to let her go. The following is a collection of poems I wrote to my angel, from our first meeting up until our wedding day. I was working crazy hours as a chef and I had a long commute. I chose my commuting time to pen her a poem each day. These poems speak of our life, our challenges and our growth together…in every aspect they speak of our love.

May this book give someone the courage to let their special someone know how much they care for them and how much they mean to them. Saying I love you is a gift you can give many times a day.

War is coming to Saxon Briton…

A generation after Arthur Pendragon ruled, Briton lies fragmented into warring kingdoms and principalities.

The Saxon King, Cerdic of Wessex, is determined to purge the land of Arthur’s Knights but, to do so, he has to destroy the sons of Arthur’s greatest enemy. But the sons of Lancelot du Lac do not die easily. It will be no easy win for Cerdic.

Unbeknown to the world the du Lac brothers are divided. Now, more than ever, they must come together to save the kingdom and themselves.

Excerpt

From The Du Lac Chronicles (book #1)

AD 495 Wessex, Briton.

Alden du Lac drew in a ragged breath. The cold night air hurt his lungs, and the rough wooden post that he was tied to rubbed the wounds on his back. He had prayed for the welcomed relief of unconsciousness; alas, it was not to be. It seemed even God wanted him to suffer for his failings.

He had lost count how many times he had been lashed. All he knew was that each lash represented every Wessex soldier that had been killed by his men. Cerniw’s losses had been far higher, but no one paid for their deaths. Life was never fair, though; he did not need a lost battle and hundreds dead to tell him that much.

The year had been horrendous. Cerniw, with its rugged moorlands, its vast forests and beautiful coasts, had been struck with one pestilence after another. The people started to talk about moving, and some already had. Those who had stayed loyal to the land and, of course, to him, no doubt now wished they had not, for when Cerdic’s Saxons came, they purged the kingdom, making it look like the hell the bishop preached of in his Sunday sermon. Alden, unlike God, had been powerless to do anything about it. Oh yes, he had fought, but the numbers he fought against had overwhelmed his army, for who could fight the devil, without God on their side, and think to win?

Alden hung his head in shame, his shoulder-length dark hair falling into his face. He cursed his naivety and worse still, his arrogance. His younger brother had warned him, but he had not heeded the warning; instead, he believed the useless treaty that Cerdic of Wessex had offered him only months before. He should have seen where Cerdic was going with it then, only he had been blinded by grief, by guilt. The responsibility for what happened, therefore, was his and his alone. He knew that, and he took the blame. He deserved to be tied to a post waiting for death.

Alden closed his pain-filled grey eyes as the image of his homeland in flames scorched his mind. He could hear the screams, the begging for mercy, and the cries for help. He could taste the terror in the air and feel the heat of the flames. Dear God, what had he done?

He had been left with no alternative. Even now, with the clarity of hindsight, he could see no other choice. He had ridden towards the enemy, carrying the white flag of truce and hoping ¾ sweet Lord, how he had hoped ¾ for clemency, not for himself, but for his people.

Instead, Cerdic’s soldiers had pulled him unceremoniously from his horse and taken him prisoner along with at least eighty of his kinsmen. Of their fate he was uncertain, but his was assured. If he did not die tonight from exposure then an axe awaited him at dawn. It was a terrifying thought, and he prayed to God for courage. He felt no warm, welcoming presence and he feared what all men secretly feared, that on the morrow, he would not die well.

Snow began to fall softly from the night sky, not enough to settle, just enough to plummet the temperature further. He began to shiver. He tried thinking of a warm fire and his large bed covered in thick furs. It did not help. After all, when last he saw his fort it was in flames.

“Are you still alive, du Lac?”

Alden kept his head down, pretending to be unconscious, and hoped the bastard would leave him alone to die in peace.

Draca, the guard in charge of the prisoners, was not fooled. He lived for terror and he had no intention of allowing the former ruler of Cerniw an easy death. He grabbed Alden’s chin roughly and forced his head up.

Alden opened his eyes and stared with contempt at the soldier in front of him. Draca was a huge man, with a shiny bald head, tiny eyes and a big fist, whose breath stank of stale beer and his body of gone-off fish mixed horribly with the smell of fresh blood ¾ not his own, but someone else’s.

“Not quite dead yet, are you? Won’t be long, though.” Draca chuckled deep in his throat. “I’ve never killed a King before. I’m looking forward to it…”

What Readers Think:

“The author does a splendid job of building the internal tension as well as some wonderfully lighthearted interactions that play out perfectly and keep the reader engaged. The secondary characters are well thought out, and bring an added dimension to the setting.” – USA Today Bestselling Author Jacquie Biggar

“Great descriptive narrative, vivid dialogue that not only breathed life into the characters but provided a window into life in a tight knit countryside community. The countryside community was portrayed so positively, it even lured this committed city girl into sampling a taste of country life with a farm visit next holiday.” Ariel C.

“For a short story, this one is so well-developed and full of wonderful characters, it was a pleasure to read.” – K. Westrope

“Another wonderful story from the talented N.N.Light. Having read The Princess of the Light and thoroughly enjoyed it, I read Planting the Seeds of Love. Romantic themes are not usually my first choice for picking a story but it is very well written and a great read.” — Nathan Stone

Blurb:

Torn between two men, Sally must follow her heart and decide if love will lead her to the city or the countryside.

Twenty-Two-year-old Sally Rayton returns to the family farm she deserted four years ago to bury her grandfather. Her plan: to settle her grandfather’s estate and return to her life in the city with her boyfriend, Trevor Mattson.

Her childhood friend, Jack Smith, has other ideas.

Jack convinces Sally to transform the farm into a brewery and fulfill her grandfather’s dream while keeping the Rayton Farm in the family. Sally works side-by-side with Jack while Trevor is hundreds of miles away in the city. The more time she spends with Jack, the stronger her feelings are for him.

When Trevor shows up to propose to Sally right before Christmas and finds her in Jack’s embrace, she must make the biggest choice of her life: true love.

Excerpt:

The next morning, Sally woke to the smell of sizzling bacon. She stretched in bed before putting on her robe. She glanced at the clock. It was already eight. She looked out the window. As far as she could see, snow covered everything like a warm glittering blanket. She hugged herself.

“So, this is what it means to be in love? I like it.”

She crept down the stairs, to see what Trevor was cooking. A smile lit her face and she sat in her grandpa’s rocking chair, watching Trevor in the kitchen. He wore a green plaid robe, his hair ruffled from sleep and there was a slight pillow crease across his left cheek. He flipped pancakes while whistling a classic rock song. She hugged her knees, reveling in her domestic bliss.

“I could get used to this,” she whispered.

He turned around and grinned.

“Good morning, beautiful. Want some coffee?”

She walked into the kitchen, giggling as if it was Christmas.

“It’s like I’m dreaming, what with you here, making breakfast.”

He handed her a mug of steaming coffee. She took a sip.

“Ahh, it’s just how I take it. Heavy cream and sugar.” She took another sip.

Trevor pulled her into his embrace.

“You are a vision in white, my angel.” He kissed her senseless. Her body responded and she burned with desire. She peppered kisses along his jawline.

“I want to go back to bed,” she whispered in his ear. She raked her teeth down his ear.

He moaned.

“You drive me crazy when you do that.” His hot breath seared her neck.

“Mmm…” she whispered.

He playfully slapped her butt.

“Vixen.”

She laughed seductively.

“Now go sit at the table and wait for breakfast.” He refilled her coffee. “Tsk tsk tsk, distracting the cook.” He winked.

Title  MERIT BADGE MURDER

Author   Leslie Langtry

Genre  Cozy Comedy

Publisher Gemma Halliday Publishing

Book Blurb

It’s not every day you find Al Qaeda’s number four operative dead in a Girl Scout camp in Iowa.

When CIA agent Merry Wrath is “accidentally” outed, she’s forced her into early retirement, changes her appearance, and moves where no one will ever find her—Iowa. Instead of black bag drops in Bangkok, she now spends her time leading a young Girl Scout troop. But Merry’s new simple life turns not-so-simple when an enemy agent shows up dead at scout camp. Suddenly Merry is forced to deal with her former life in order to preserve her future one.

It doesn’t help matters that the CIA sends in her former, sexy handler to investigate…or that the hot new neighbor across the street turns out to be the local detective in charge of her case. And when Merry is forced to take on a roommate in the voluptuous form of a turned KGB agent/bimbo, things become trickier than wet work in Waukegan or cookie sales in the spring. Nothing in the CIA or Girl Scouts’ training manuals has prepared her for what comes next…

Excerpt

It’s not every day you find Al Qaeda’s number four operative dead in a Girl Scout camp in Iowa.

The body was twisted unnaturally in the spider web element of the course that consisted of a large wood frame crisscrossed with elastic bungee cords.  Sadly, it was my troop’s favorite thing to do at camp. Now I had to disappoint them. I hated disappointing them.

A man hung there, in what had been his twenties, of Middle Eastern descent. The neck was clearly broken before he was placed in the ropes at Camp Singing Bird. He looked surprised to find himself here.  I’m sure the irony would be lost on him that in death, he really was surrounded by seventy-two virgins. Did it matter that they were grade schoolers, I wondered? Maybe that was just splitting hairs.

I would’ve been surprised too, had I not been through this kind of thing before. But I’d seen this stuff in Syria and Uzbekistan – not in the placid, wooded hills of eastern Iowa.

And my second-grade troop was due at any minute. I was pretty sure I couldn’t pass this off as something adorable – like I had with the bats in Tinder Trails Cabin or the mice in the latrines. Troop Leader’s Helpful Hint #1 – if your Girl Scouts freak out upon meeting a bat/mouse/wolf spider for the first time – tell them it’s just a baby bat/mouse/wolf spider. Little girls are suckers for that and soon what was scary is ‘adorbs!’ – whatever that means.

I bent to take his pulse, just to make sure. Yup. He was dead. His glassy eyes were opened wide and his mouth hung open.  Dammit. I need this like I needed wet work in the slums of Rio.

The sounds of giggles and singing came from the trees just around the corner. Any minute the fourteen, seven and eight year old girls who called me their leader would appear. I was pretty sure I couldn’t convince them that this dead terrorist was a cute, dead baby terrorist. I pulled the parachute I was going to use for games later out of my backpack and threw it over the spider web.

“Mrs. Wrath!” The girls squealed in unison before tackling me in a sticky, group hug. Kelly, my co-leader, smirked at me. She could get away with smirking at me because she’s known me since we were six-year old scouts.

“Girls,” I gently pushed them away. “How many times do I need to tell you – it’s Ms. Wrath.  I’m not married.” Of course, I knew the answer to this question. Ad infinitum. Meaning, they’d always call me Mrs.  Any woman over the age of twenty-one in Iowa was ‘Mrs.’ Clearly it was me who didn’t get it.

“Mrs. Wrath?” The third Katelynn asked. Or was it the Kaitlin the Fourth? They all looked the same to me. And each one of them spelled their name a completely different way. Spy work had not prepared me for that.

“It’s Ms. Wrath, Katelynn.” I said with a smile. Leader Helpful Hint #2 – when talking to  little girls, always smile. They cry if you don’t. I’m not kidding. You don’t know real terror until you’ve stared at the watery eyes and rubbery bottom lip of a cute kid.

The second grader looked confused for a moment, which was to be expected. “Okay. Mrs. Wrath?” She asked again.

I sighed. “Yes, Katelynn?”

“Why is the parachute over the spider web? And why is it all lumpy?”

Kelly squinted at the parachute, eyebrows knit together. She’d probably figure it out, being a nurse and all.

“The spider web is out of commission, girls.” I announced, stepping between them and the dead man.

A chorus of complaints came from the little girls and I held up my right hand in the universal Girl Scout symbol for silence. They quieted down immediately. I once again, really wished I’d known about this trick when I was surrounded by Farc rebels in Colombia.

“Head on over to the Peanut Butter Pass – I think you’re old enough for that one now.” I said in a nice save worthy of someone of my caliber.

“YAY!” The girls exploded in shrieks and raced off to that element, leaving me in the dust.

Kelly narrowed her eyes. “They aren’t old enough for the Peanut Butter Pass.”

“You’d better get after them before they start scaling the rope, then. I’ll be there in a minute.” I shoved her in the direction of the squealing herd before she could respond. “We can’t leave them alone for a minute, you know.”

Kelly gave me a weird look, but took off after the troop. I turned back to the dead man in the parachute. It kind of looked like he was cocooned in the web – as if a giant spider had caught him, poisoned and wrapped him to save for later. If only that was what had really happened.

With a heavy sigh, I took out my cell phone to call the ranger. This was going to suck. You think the CIA is bad with paperwork? Langley has NOTHING on the Girl Scouts of America when it comes to filling out forms and accident reports in triplicate. Nothing.

MoonlightMagicBoxsetWithoutBG FINAL

Blurb:

There’s a new supe in Destiny. She sauntered into the Moat of Morpheus¾a redheaded violet-eyed warrior carrying a giant head-splitter of a sword and wielding it with magic. Her name was Cinder. River felt an immediate attraction as well as a lifting of the despair that had been his only companion for months. But it was short lived.

She was there to kill a dragonhunter and accused River of hiding the truth about him. Turns out, she was right. River had a secret and his own reasons for remaining quiet. If he couldn’t break free of the villain’s control, there would be devastating consequences for his family and ultimately, the Paramortals.

After his sister and the dragon sheriff go missing, River and Cinder join forces. But history has a way of coming full circle and echoes from their past bring a shattering revelation about their Paramortal family and the dragonhunter’s true identity, the full disclosure neither could have anticipated. Can they forgive the past to overcome their common enemy or will the news tear their relationship and the Paramortals apart forever?

Excerpt (two of my favorite Destiny characters, Conor and Montana with Cinder)

“Oh, Conor. I failed.”

He placed his hands on her shoulders and peeled her away from him. He sensed Montana’s presence as he put Cinder at arm’s length and looked into her distraught features. His sister was famous for never allowing people or problems to get to her, for seeing humor in most any situation. This was new. “ Piuthar bheag, what has you so upset.”

Cinder looked at Montana who raised her shoulders and looked at the house in question, but Cinder shook her head. “It does not matter if you have seen me trash my heritage or my total failure. It will be well known before long.”

Conor didn’t accept her self-flagellation. “Hush, now, sister. Tell me whit happened.”

Cinder’s breath shuddered out. “I tracked the dragonhunter. Styx, I heard his men call him. They met in the woods behind the Moat of Morpheus.” Her eyes searched his. “It was as sure a kill as I could ever hope for but…” Her voice trailed away as she looked at Montana and then at the ground. Her shoulders slumped as she whispered, “I couldn’t do it.”

Conor frowned. He couldn’t have heard right. “How do you mean? Why couldn’t you complete your blood calling? Whit could have stopped you?”

Her stricken eyes rose to his. “I sensed something in him.” She shook her head violently as Conor opened his mouth to speak. “I don’t know, Conor. It felt¾I felt… connected to him somehow, as if in killing… in killing him I would destroy a part of myself.” Tears filled her eyes as the devastating thought took hold. “How can that be? It is my duty, my blood work to kill dragonhunters. What is wrong with me?”

Conor’s mind raced. Cinder was part fae. Could this be a trick by the dragonhunter? They didn’t know this Styx’ true nature. Even if he was a fae, it should not matter. There was no reason why she wouldn’t be able to take out another fae if that was her mission. As with all life forms, dragons were created with a purpose and Cinder was a special sub species. Only a few ever existed and they were relentless in their pursuit of their prey.

Montana spoke for the first time, as usual reading his mind. “Do you think Petre and Arabella might know something?” She knew him so well.

Cinder looked questioningly at Montana. “Who are these people you speak of?”

Conor said, “They are the king and queen of faerie folk here. That is a good suggestion, Montana. Thank you for reminding me.”

Montana smiled at his thoughtful response. He knew how uncomfortable she’d been on their visit to the Faerie Inn. The Fae king had a special appetite for vampires, but because of their gushing exuberance at Conor’s presence they’d shown special… tolerance in her presence.

“They can tell us of any new fae arrivals and perhaps enlighten you about your own heritage,” said Conor. “I’m sorry, Cinder, I should have made it my business to know more before you found yerself in this position. I wish we could leave now, but two dragons flying over Destiny in broad daylight would cause a stir, ya ken?”

He hoped to gain a smile from his little sister but the look on her face told him she was back reliving the moment when she’d been unable to fulfill her mission.

“You could call a taxi,” said Montana. Two sets of eyes snapped toward her. She raised her hands and grinned, “What? You’ve never taken a taxi?”

When they continued to gape at her she shrugged. “It’s like you always say, Conor. ‘Needs must’.”

Gyldan, born into slavery, has one desire—fly free. When he escapes to Earth, he faces an alternate self-realization full of dark glory…and disbelief. Gyldan is bent on experiencing his newfound powers unmindful of the harm to Brit or others.

Confused and hurt by Gyldan’s erratic evil actions, Brit turns away. While Gyldan’s journey of self-discovery pulls him further distant, Brit finds acceptance in a solitary, comfortable life of her own until she realizes the day of reckoning has come. Will Gyldan be her final ruin or has he come back to her with a gift more precious than life itself?

Excerpt

Though my other brother held the sword, he winged a retreat.  I did not know what had happened, or if I could command the lightning again.

Neither did he.

“What of the freak now, Adamus? Will you risk your weapon against mine?”

He brandished his sword. “You bastard.  You murdered your brother.”

Wing beats slow, I flew toward him.  “He was a stranger intent on slaying me.”

I spread four wings to their fullest.  Adamus’ eyes widened, fear written on his face.  He gripped his sword tighter.  “By the Beast! Two pairs of wings.”

My body was a hard-plucked string, power humming through me.  I smiled at my brother, drove my four wings down, swept them up, and attacked.  The enmity that had festered between us must end…in defeat for one of us.

Pacing below, Brit screamed, “Gyldan, the gate is closing.  Come down now or we’re trapped.  We won’t stand a chance. I hear horses.”

On the horizon, the rumble of hooves and clouds of dust announced a troop of riders.  Queen Mary had not only sent her winged army but her cavalry.  Sunlight glinted on armor and the red and black of the horses’ trappings.  I banked hard left and plunged into a reckless descent.  Shouts pursued me.

“Coward,” Adamus barked.  “Fight me!”

My brother waved his sword but made no move to follow.  Knowing such power was mine—that I had dissolved another angel in a shower of sparks—thrilled yet terrified me.  I had never known Daniel.  Now, I never would.

Frantic wing beats pulled me out of the dive.  I glanced over my shoulder as Adamus plummeted into pursuit.  I yearned to turn and fight, but on the ground Brit jumped up and down, waving her arms…and Adamus was my only brother.  The shimmering mirage behind her faded.  She shoved her arm into the dizzying colors, and the limb disappeared to the elbow.

Light glimmered off my wings as I unfurled them to cushion my landing, shifted my weight, and ran toward Brit and the dimming gate.  Adamus’ laughter pursued me.  He sailed toward us.  The cavalry thundered over the crest of a hill.

Excerpt

“Is someone at the door, Duffen? In this weather?”

The door swung open and revealed a striking blonde, wearing a dress as ugly and drab as the dismal day.

Heath’s jaw sagged.

Despite the atrocious grayish gown, the woman’s figure stole the air from him. Full breasts strained against the too small dress, tapering to a waist his hands could span. And from her height, he’d lay odds she possessed long, graceful legs. Legs that could wrap around his waist and…

Though cold to his marrow, his manhood surged with sensual awareness. He shifted his stance, grateful his long overcoat covered him to his ankles. He snapped his mouth shut. Evict this shapely beauty? Surely a monumental mistake had been made. Gainsborough couldn’t be so cold-hearted would he?

The woman regarded him much like a curious kitten; interest piqued, yet unsure of what to make of him. Her dark blue, almost violet, eyes glowed with humor, and a smile hovered on her plump lips. The wind teased the flaxen curls framing her oval face.

A dog poked its snout from beneath her skirt and issued a muffled warning.

“Hush, Freddy. Go inside. Shoo.”

She neatly stepped over the portly corgi. The bodice of her gown pulled taught exposing hardened nipples.

Another surge of desire jolted Heath.

Disturbing. Uncharacteristic this instant lust.

Rainwater dribbled from the hair plastered to his forehead into his eyes. He swiped the strands away to see her better.

The dog skulked into the house. Just barely. He plopped onto the entrance, his worried brown-eyed gaze fixed on Heath.

Ebénè nudged Heath, none too gently.

He glared at the grinning buffoon peeking around the doorframe. The woman probably thought Heath a half-witted dolt.

“Miss—”

A ruckus echoed behind her. She glanced behind her as four more young women crowded into the entry.

Blister and damn. A bloody throng of goddesses.

Surely God’s favor had touched them, for London couldn’t claim a single damsel this exquisite, let alone five diamonds of the first water.

Gainsborough had some lengthy explaining to do.

A Rancher’s Pride by @BarbaraWDaille and @HarlequinBooks #romance #books #99cents

A Ranchers Pride

Title – A Rancher’s Pride

Author  – Barbara White Daille

Genre – Contemporary Romance

Publisher – Harlequin Books

A Rancher’s Pride is the first in Barbara’s Flagman’s Folly series. It’s available in print and (as of this writing) is currently 99 cents at many major e-tailers!

Book Blurb –

His Whole World Is In Her Hands…

Sam Robertson’s life just changed. In one short day, he found out that he’s a daddy; that his beautiful little girl, Becky, is deaf; and that her aunt, sign language teacher Kayla Ward, intends to fight him for custody.

There are plenty of reasons Sam shouldn’t fall for Kayla. A city girl like her has no place on his ranch, particularly when she’s his ex-wife’s gorgeous sister. But thanks to the judge’s orders, Sam’s spending a lot of time with Kayla, trying to give Becky the stable home she’s never known.

Despite their ongoing custody battle, Sam and Kayla’s love for Becky brings them closer than they ever expected, and Sam knows that no matter who wins in court, he could still lose—Kayla or his daughter.

Excerpt –

This is from the opening of A Rancher’s Pride:

The minute Sam Robertson saw his mother’s frozen expression, he knew something terrible had happened. He hadn’t seen that look on Sharleen’s face since the night his daddy died.

He tossed his Stetson onto the hook by the kitchen door and crossed the room to where she sat by the round pine table. “Mom?  What is it?  What’s wrong?”

“Sam…”  She cleared her throat and started again. “Ronnie was here.”

“Ronnie?”  He frowned. He hadn’t seen his ex-wife in five years. “What did she want after all this time?  Just stopping by to say hello?”

“She said she’s settling down again. With another man.”

“That’s what has you upset?  You should know better. And we should both pity the poor guy. So, what did she do, drop off an invitation to the wedding?”

“No.”  Sharleen took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Finally, she said, “She dropped something off, but not an invitation. She brought a little girl with her. Four years old. Ronnie left her here. She said she’s your daughter.”

What?”  The news rocked him back in the chair. “That’s impossible.”

“I’m not sure that it is. The child is blonde. Like Ronnie. But she’s got your eyes. Your daddy’s eyes. She looks like a Robertson, through and through.”  She waved toward the arched doorway. “See for yourself.”

After a moment’s hesitation, he rose and moved to the door. He had to brace himself before he could step into the living room.

Everything looked familiar. The pair of plaid couches facing each other. The long pine coffee table between them. The chime clock ticking away on the mantel. Everything looked familiar, except the child sitting on one of the couches.

A beautiful little girl.

The daughter he’d always hoped for, the start of the family he’d never had.

He shook his head. Pipe dreams, for sure. Ronnie had never told a true story in her life. This child couldn’t be his.

As he moved another step into the room, she looked up.

Small and blonde, just as Sharleen had said. And more.

The girl’s eyes shone in the light from the table lamp beside the couch. Silver-gray eyes surrounded by dark lashes, a perfect match to his own.

His throat tightened. He felt frozen in place.

She gave him a shy smile.

He’d seen that half-twisted grin in plenty of his own childhood pictures. Not impossible after all. The child was his.

Somehow, after what seemed like hours, he managed to raise one hand to wave at her. “Hello.”  The word came out in a croak. He hadn’t the first idea of what to say and went for the standard opening line. “What’s your name?”

Sharleen moved up to stand behind him and rested her hand on his arm. “Her name’s Becky,” she told him. “But she can’t hear you, Sam. She’s deaf.”

Now River’s genie bottle is missing, the males in my life are acting crrrazy, and my emotions are threatening to unleash my Tempestaerie powers whether I like it or not.

I turned to a human, Sheriff Jack Lang, a hunky ex-Navy pilot who believes he moved to a normal small town – like Mayberry – to raise his teenage daughter.

As he investigates the strange happenings in the area, it’s inevitable that Jack will be…erm…enlightened about Destiny’s and my true nature. Especially when the locals begin ‘exposing’ their special ‘aptitudes’. And just for your inconvenience, when you comment that you’ve ordered a copy, I’ll enter you in my kindle giveaway for October which I’m announcing on my upcoming newsletter.

A Sneak Peek:

The rumble beneath my feet was the only notice I had of the electric strike that rode straight up my legs, curling in my midsection and crawling swiftly along my right arm to produce my own version of a Fourth of July sparkler, emanating from that fingertip. Then brilliant bolts of crackling white light spit and sizzled in my palm, sending jagged streamers of hot blue fire ten feet into the air.

I gawked.

A car entering a nearby street freed me from the mesmerizing light display. This was different from any of the charging I’d previously experienced. Bigger. Usually it just sort of replenished on its own. Panicked, I looked over my shoulder, and exhaled. So far so good.

Now what? I needed to command the fire in my hand to… what? Before I could say, “Be gone,” or “Go thither,” the light subsided to a small crackly glow. That was it then. Instinct took over. I knelt beside Mr. Jackson and placed my glowing index finger against his chest. With a single szzwaattt, I zapped him, right in the heart. His chest arched up only the barest of seconds as it met my magical defibrillator, then his body relaxed.

Momentarily deafened and somewhat addled as my faculties came back online, I groped for the pulse in his neck. For a second, I thought I’d failed. But then, his tired, smoke glutted organ started beating.

Thank the gods.

Only the slight whiff of burnt flesh remained on the wind. Drained of energy, I swiped the back of my hand across my forehead. And spotted the mark.

“Zeus’ rechargeable bolts! That better be temporary.”

Centered on the spot where I’d zapped him, a pale image was forming. It looked like a pale, mini version of… well… me.

Running Wild

Title: Running Wild, Hell Ryders MC #1

Author: J.L. Sheppard

Genre: Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

** ON SALE FOR .99 cents! **

Book Blurb:

When the perfect life Alyssa Holden planned turns out to be a life of lies, she runs to her brother, the only person she can trust. She has no idea she’s running straight into a world of badass bikers who live and ride by their own rules. One tatted rebel in particular calls to her wilder side, and while everything in her draws her toward him, every experience she’s had with men warns her away.

Jace Warren is doing what he’s done his whole life—trying to survive, making the best with what he’d been given. The only life that makes sense after the military is Hell Ryder’s Motorcycle Club, but the sweet innocence of his army buddy’s sister promises a different life, one a man like him can only dream of. Problem is, being his MC brother’s sister puts her off limits. Hard as it is, he keeps his distance. Then she kisses him, and all bets are off.

Excerpt:

A woman moaned.
Allie hadn’t meant to look, but unwillingly, she turned her head. The door wide open, so inevitably, she caught sight of them. She stood there seeing, yet unbelieving, frozen with her eyes glued to an image she’d never forget no matter how much she craved to.
Jace.
Shirtless sitting up on the edge of his bed, his head angled back, eyes closed, lips parted. A dark-haired woman draped over him, kissing his neck, her legs wrapped around him. Her black leather skirt hiked up to her waist, his hands cupping her bare ass.
Her heart clenched, squeezing in her chest so hard it hurt. Deep and searing her from the inside out.
Jesus.
How it hurt.
And she didn’t know why.
He wasn’t hers. He was a biker who couldn’t stand her. Single, free to screw however many scantily dressed women he wanted. Her brother warned her bikers did it often, and still somewhere deep inside, she held hope Jace was different. He wasn’t just a biker, he was the man who took his niece to dinner weekly, the man who’d roughed up her ex-fiancé, then held her while she cried.
It was more than that, too. She wanted to believe the man who affected her in a way no other man ever had, the man whose arms she’d felt safe in couldn’t be anything like her brother described.

Excerpt:

Movie wasn’t halfway done, and his girl had already passed out. Head on his shoulder, legs on the couch to her other side.

Smiling, he took a breath. Her head on his shoulder slipped lower. He wrapped an arm around her, turning toward her slightly until her head lay on his chest. Either he’d gotten good at doing that or she was a heavy sleeper. Probably the latter, not once when he carried her to bed had she woken.

She let out a small sigh and burrowed into him.

He loved that. She did it a lot, and every time she did it, it made him feel like he had the world in the palm of his hands. Maybe not his hands, but he definitely had the world sleeping against his chest.

His gaze slid from her face to her hair. He threaded his fingers through it. So soft. So thick. He spared a glance at the television and realized he missed an important plot point. Now, he was lost. Nothing new. He never paid much attention to the movie once she dozed off. He just sat there and watched her sleep. Often, he ran his hand through her hair like he was then. Every once in a while, he looked to the screen. And when he did, he remembered the movie would be over soon, and then, he’d have to force himself to stop staring at her, carry her to bed, and head home.

Worse part of the night, heading home.

He hated it, hated leaving her.

And still, it had to be done.

Title:  MERIT BADGE MURDER

Author:  Leslie Langtry

Genre:  Cozy Comedy

Publisher: Gemma Halliday Publishing

Book Blurb:

When CIA agent Merry Wrath is “accidently” outted, she’s forced her into early retirement, changes her appearance, and moves where no one will ever find her—Iowa.

Get this fantastic book for 99 cents!!!

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

And my second grade troop was due at any minute.

Nothing.

The Blakeney Brother Adventure Series

Four brothers living on the edge of the law

smugglers bounty cover

Title: Smuggler’s Bounty (Book 1)

Author: Vanessa Liebe

Genre: Historical Erotic Romance / Mystery & Suspense

Publisher: Blushing Books

Book Blurb:

Elizabeth Thornton is left all alone in Georgian England after losing her parents in a tragic accident, so she travels to Cornwall to live with her kindly, older, and very proper Aunt Judith. Soon, however, she begins to suspect her aunt of hiding something nefarious. Determined to learn the truth behind the strange goings on, she sets out on a quest for the truth. A quest that leads to danger, and trouble with the law, and a very handsome smuggler with a firm hand and smoldering, sexy eyes who is as determined to keep Elizabeth safe as she seems to be to put herself in harm’s way.

William is growing tired of the smuggler’s life of danger and instability. If he can just finish his last run, he can give it all up and finally settle down, find love, and start a family. But he already has a preventative officer hot on his heels who is determined to end his career and throw him in jail – or worse. The beautiful, headstrong Elizabeth is a complication he does not need. But she, too, is hot on his heels – and irresistible. Now he must avoid capture, and find time to discipline this woman with an appetite for adventure, who seems determined to steal his heart.

When these two are together passions ignite, sparks fly, and danger lurks around every corner. Can Elizabeth and William avoid the law? Will they finally find the happiness that has so long eluded them both?

Excerpt:

She closed the library door and immediately went over to the fireplace with her lantern.

She managed to light the candle in it with the tinder box she’d been given and then pulled on the fire poker once more. The entrance slid open and she ducked down to go inside. She was so keen to explore that she didn’t consider that it might be dangerous, and simply stepped into the tunnel. There was a catch just inside the tunnel that closed the door behind her.

Elizabeth took a deep breath and walked forward with her lantern lighting the way. The tunnel was all wooden paneling at first and so she thought she must still be inside the house. But she soon came to some steps that led a long way down. Then she had to be careful, holding the lantern and her skirts up around her as she made her way carefully down them. When she reached the bottom, the walls were roughly hewn rock and she felt that thrill of adventure again as she realized that she must be underground somewhere.

Elizabeth was so preoccupied with her thoughts that it was a complete shock when she was suddenly grabbed from the side. She dropped her lantern with a shriek and the glass casing smashed. The candle sputtered out and she was left in complete darkness with the man who had grabbed her. He covered her mouth to stop her cries and held her tightly against him.

Elizabeth kicked and struggled in panic before biting hard into the hand that covered her mouth. The man swore but held onto her.

“Curiosity killed the cat, sweetness,” the man purred into her ear, causing her neck hairs to stand on end. “And if you bite me again you little hell cat, I’ll bite back.”

She shivered in fear, and something else she’d rather not admit to, at the sound of that voice. It was the handsome smuggler from last night – the leader. Although Elizabeth was scared of what he might do with her for meddling, she hoped that she could reason with him, especially if she let him know who her aunt was. However, all coherent thought stopped as he ran a hand over her body.

TamingTheSpy

Title: Taming the Spy

Author: Vanessa Liebe

Genre: Historical Erotic Romance / Mystery & Suspense

Publisher: Blushing Books

Book Blurb:

Cameron Blakeney is a man on a mission. Well, more than one, actually. Not only does he wish to reunite his brothers, separated from him in childhood, but he’s a spy for the Crown. When he’s tasked to observe two French spies in Portsmouth, he hopes to use the opportunity to locate his youngest brother, too. What he’s not expecting is to be working with a co-agent in the form of the lovely, undisciplined Lady Arabella.

Lady Arabella Willoughby enjoys working as a female spy and is looking forward to her latest assignment. However, when she discovers her co-agent is Cameron Blakeney, she’s not so enthralled. Her one-time childhood friend and hero seems to relish taking her to task over the slightest ‘misdemeanor’.

Their mission sees them traveling across the beautiful English countryside, but it is all they can do to stay focused on their goal and not each other. For his part, Cameron is enjoying teaching Arabella new things. Things like how to reveal secrets written in invisible ink, and how to pleasure a man with her mouth.

Arabella is a devoted student and learns all of her lessons well. Lessons that include learning to find pleasure in being over Cameron’s knee, bare bottom upturned, legs spread, and with his hand coming down to help her realize the error of her headstrong, reckless actions.

Publisher’s note: This suspenseful romantic spy story contains scenes of domestic discipline and explicitly described sexual scenes.

Excerpt:

Cameron knocked on the spymaster’s door and entered.

“Good morning, Cameron.”

“Good morning, James.”

The two men had known each other for years and Cameron was glad that at least here in this office he could be an ordinary man again.

“How’s the estate?”

“Flourishing,” Cameron told the older man with pride. “Despite personal circumstances, my father managed everything with great efficiency. I barely have to do anything. I also have a very capable steward.”

James Coleridge nodded. Then pierced him with an intelligent gaze. “And your brothers?”

Cameron actually felt a lump in his throat at mention of them. They’d been separated for so long. “As you know I’ve found one of them, Gabe. Along with his wife. I’m continuing my search for the others. I believe William may be down in Cornwall, so I have sent runners there to find out.”

“Well, I have a mission for you and while you’re doing it, it may offer you an opportunity to search for your youngest brother.”

Cameron was immediately intrigued. “What do you mean?”

The other man clasped his hands and leaned on his elbows on the desk. “I have knowledge of two French spies coming to Portsmouth.”

A growing sense of anticipation was felt. This was what he was meant for—code breaking, dangerous undercover and intelligence gathering work, not dancing with pretty debutantes at balls.

“Do tell me more, James.”

“You’ve heard of Brochand & Fouché?”

Cameron raised a brow. “I believe so. Amongst my travels for the Crown.”

“They’re coming to England to gather intelligence from certain French engineers studying here.”

“Naval and industrial spies?”

“Exactly so. They’re landing in Portsmouth, so they’ll begin with the naval intelligence. I strongly suspect that their final destination will be London to mix with the political elite of the haut ton.”

Cameron rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “The engineers would be unable to attend social gatherings of course. Do they have an aristocratic contact?” If there was a traitor, Cameron wanted to know.

James gave a brief shake of his head. “Not that I’m aware of. It will be part of your role to find out. I believe they will have to coerce or blackmail someone into helping them. Or they may bribe someone, in which case do they have finances available to them?”

Cameron’s jaw tightened. “There’s bound to be some fool with pockets to let or a gambler they can exploit.”

“Well, you’ll be following them around, so you can discover all of this for me, including any money trails,” the older man said.

Cameron’s eyes widened. “Following?”

“Yes. Don’t look surprised, Cameron. You’re ideally placed for this task. I want you to watch them in Portsmouth, follow them around in various disguises and report back to me. If they send any correspondence, I want you to intercept it and read it. If it gives away quantities of armaments, I wish for you to downgrade them. And send a replacement. If not too much is given away, you can reseal the letter.”

“Yes. Fine.” Cameron was used to operating in such a manner. “And if they leave Portsmouth?”

“Send a message back to me, but always follow them. I want to know everywhere they go, who they meet, especially once they are here in London. You can be yourself at social events, as can your co-agent, for you are both already well known amongst the ton and can mix naturally with the political elite, without drawing attention to yourselves.”

The sudden mention of a co-agent surprised him. Cameron had always worked alone before. It was less dangerous. “My what?” He couldn’t his displeasure.

With card sharps, traitors, and the militia to worry about, Gabriel and Caroline find danger ever present. He is determined to keep her safe throughout, even if that means a trip over his knee.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

“Stand and deliver!”

The demand came loud and clear, as Lady Caroline Godwin’s coach came to a sudden stop. She sucked in a deep breath, holding onto the sides of her bench seat to brace herself against falling off. Her maid did the same, looking up at her in fright. “Oh, my lady. It’s a highwayman. I knew we shouldn’t have travelled at night.”

Lady Caroline couldn’t have agreed more. However, upon receiving news that her father was gravely ill and had lost a fortune at cards again, she knew she must leave London and return home. Travelling at night to get there as quickly as possible had seemed worth the risk. Not only did she need to know exactly how much her father had lost, she knew that her mother wouldn’t be able to cope with the situation. Her father had suffered a stroke immediately after losing and was currently bed bound.

Lady Caroline tried to reassure her maid. “I need you to be calm, Maisie. If we do as the rogue asks, we will come to no harm.” Yet after the initial shout, there was no sign of the highwayman. Furious both at her father for gambling away his money, and for getting stopped like this, Lady Caroline was feeling brave rather than scared. She was about to get out of the coach and see what was going on, when there were a few muffled curses from above them, a few thumps and then silence. She frowned, straining her ears to hear more.

“He’s going to kill us all!” cried Maisie fearfully, before fainting.

Lady Caroline looked at her maid lying in a crumpled heap on the bench seat opposite and couldn’t help feeling even crosser. “For heaven’s sake,” she muttered. And what has happened to my coachman and footman? “Frank? George?” she called out. She was met with silence.

She gasped as the door was suddenly pulled open and a tall, masked figure appeared, holding a pistol. The man, dressed all in black and with a tricorn hat on his head, looked around the coach, before returning his gaze to her. The pistol was aimed at her. “Good evening, my lady.”

Lady Caroline stared at him. The moonlight shone down on him, but didn’t reveal much, due to his dark clothing and black eye mask. She could make out sensual lips though, her gaze drawn to them because it was the only part of his face she could clearly make out. Then her gaze dropped to the pistol aimed at her and she felt renewed anger. He’d caused her maid to faint, he’d done god knows what to her male servants and now he was aiming a weapon at her. She raised her chin and glared at him. “It was a good evening, until you came along,” she told him. “What have you done to my coachman and footman?”

The highwayman had the nerve to grin at her. “They’re gagged and bound, my lady. But unhurt.”

He climbed into the carriage, sitting down opposite her, on the edge of the seat, next to her unconscious maid. “Now, if you don’t mind handing over some of your baubles, I will leave you in peace.”

Thanks to her father, Lady Caroline didn’t have much in the way of jewelry. What she did have held no value. She looked down her nose at him. “I’m afraid you’ve robbed the wrong coach tonight.”

“Is it too late for second chances?” The Rebel’s Redemption by @JacqBiggar #romanticsuspense

JacquieBiggar_TheRebelsRedemption_800px

Title: The Rebel’s Redemption (Book 2 Wounded Hearts Series)

Author: Jacquie Biggar

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Is it too late for second chances?

Jared Martin left Tidal Falls a hotheaded youth. Eight years in the military has turned him into a cynical, disillusioned man.

Then he returns home to find out he’s a father.

When an old enemy follows and causes mayhem in the small town, can Jared overcome the odds to protect the woman he’s always loved and the child he never knew?

Or is it be too late for them to have a second chance?

Excerpt:

Jared’s world narrowed down to the little black barrel of the gun pointed at his chest. Funny, in all the years of being in the SEAL teams he’d never been in this situation. Not to say he hadn’t dodged his share of bullets. It’s just they’d always erupted like a hailstorm, out of nowhere. This was somewhere. The back alley of his mother’s freaking café in freaking America to be exact. What the hell?

If he wasn’t so pissed off at himself for getting into this situation, he might have laughed. Eight years overseas off and on, and he was going to get shot in his own backyard. How’s that for ironic?

“Look man, why don’t we talk about this?” Jared forced his gaze to focus on Sergei’s steely gaze instead of the muzzle of the semi-automatic.

“The time for talk is past,” the Russian said. “You ignored my advice and instead made a fool out of me with that stupid trick you performed.”

“Advice? You call beating the livin’ shit out of me, advice?” Jared ground his teeth together, and fought to keep a level tone. “You can’t blame a guy for wanting to retaliate.” A crash by the garbage caused both men to crouch into a fight stance. A tabby cat raced away. Jared straightened, his heart knocking against his ribcage, as desperate to escape this mess as the animal. He needed to defuse the situation before someone came upon them; please God not his mom.

“Okay, you’re right. I shouldn’t have set off alarms or caused those slots to pay out. But seriously dude, you can’t go around acting all KGB, we’re in the good old USA now.” Jared kept a careful eye on the guy’s trigger finger and cursed his loose tongue. What part of defuse couldn’t he figure out?

Sergei tipped his felt hat back on his bald head like an old time gunslinger. His hand holding the gun never wavered. “You have big mouth.”

Yeah, I’ve heard that a time or ten.

“Why don’t we handle this like two adults? I’ll call your boss, tell him I screwed up and it’ll never happen again…” There was no doubt on that, if he ever went near a casino again he’d kick his own ass. “And then you can go back to ruling your little kingdom far, far, away.”

Excerpt:

“Hold me. Don’t let me go,” Laura said. She nuzzled his neck and sank into his strong embrace. “Love me,” she whispered in his ear. His muscles tensed in response. She wanted his arms around her, his lips touching hers.

They sank on the bed and held each other close. She was afraid to let him go, afraid the emptiness would find her, afraid of losing him, again. With an unending thirst, she focused on his mouth, the shape of his lips, the kisses that they promised.

His hand stroked the side of her body from her breast to her thigh, claiming them. One stroke of her breast and she tugged on his shirt. He didn’t hesitate. He obliged her and pulled it off. Her hand played down the hard planes of his chest. Her eyes widened at the sight of the scars on his chest.

“These weren’t here.” She traced them with her finger.

He stopped her hand and brought it to his lips. “Fighting for The Maxwell comes with a price. I don’t want to think of the Maxwell.” He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

She closed her eyes and reveled in the tingling sensation racing through her body and put her head on his shoulder.

He opened her bodice and stroked the top of her chest then, with trembling hands, touched her breasts. A low moan escaped her lips.

Jamie bent and kissed each breast.

He ignited a flame inside her that set her on fire. Delicious shudders pulsed through her. She pulled his head away and kissed him.

Her fingers traced the scars and the muscles of his chest danced at the light touch. “Where did you get this one?”

“In a fight with the English.” His rapt gaze focused on her face.

Her lips brushed against his skin.  His skin deckled in gooseflesh. Her finger moved on. “And this one?”

“A reiver attack,” his voice was husky and seductive.

The hooded passion in his eyes encouraged her. She kissed the scar and moved on. The tips of her fingers traced down his chest. “Here is another.” The scar snaked below his navel. Another kiss. Her fingers trailed down further.

He pulled her up and rolled on top of her. Her body instinctively arched against his. “You are mine.” His warm breath brushed against her face. Two heartbeats passed. “Do you hear me? You’re mine,” he said more urgently.

“Yes.” Her voice an intimate whisper. His lips tugged into a sideways grin.

His smile that made her bones go limp. It was his magic.

Friday Book Round-Up Rustles Up 12 Deals on #Books! #FridayReads #amreading #99cents

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. Spring is here and I’m itching for some good books to read. We just paid our taxes so money is tight. So, off I went to Amazon see what I could find in their deals section. Everything from Fiction to Romance to Mystery were on sale so here are the ones I recommend (and downloaded):

The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen ($1.50)

In an idyllic small-town neighborhood, a near tragedy triggers a series of dark revelations.

From the outside, Sycamore Glen, North Carolina, might look like the perfect all-American neighborhood. But behind the white picket fences lies a web of secrets that reach from house to house.

Up and down the streets, neighbors quietly bear the weight of their own pasts—until an accident at the community pool upsets the delicate equilibrium. And when tragic circumstances compel a woman to return to Sycamore Glen after years of self-imposed banishment, the tangle of the neighbors’ intertwined lives begins to unravel.

During the course of a sweltering summer, long-buried secrets are revealed, and the neighbors learn that it’s impossible to really know those closest to us. But is it impossible to love and forgive them?

Heirs of Grace by Tim Pratt ($1.50)

Recent art school graduate Bekah thought she’d hit the jackpot: an unknown relative died, and she inherited a small fortune and a huge house in the mountains of North Carolina.

Trey Howard, the lawyer who handled the estate, is a handsome man in his twenties and they hit it off right away—and soon become more than friends. Bekah expected a pleasant year to get her head together and have a romantic fling. Problem is, the house is full of junk…and siblings she didn’t know she had are willing to kill her for it.

More important, the junk in her new house is magical, she’s surrounded by monsters, and her life seems to be in mortal peril every time she ventures into a new room. As Bekah discovers more about her mysterious benefactor and the magical world he inhabited, she’s realizes that as tough and resourceful as she is, she might just be in over her head…

Heirs of Grace is a tale of family and magic, action and wonder, blending the strong heroine, cheeky humor, and dark fantasy that have become the hallmarks of Tim Pratt’s writing.

Only The Innocent by Rachel Abbott ($1.50)

Every moment of Sir Hugo Fletcher’s life has been chronicled in the British press: his privileged upbringing, his high-profile charity work to end human trafficking—even his two marriages. But when the billionaire philanthropist is discovered murdered in his London home, tied naked to a bed, the scandal is only a shadow of the darkness lurking off-camera.

Laura Fletcher returns from an Italian vacation to find her husband dead and her home under siege by paparazzi. Is she shocked? Yes. But is she distraught? Not exactly. Especially when Chief Inspector Tom Douglas reveals his suspicions that Hugo’s killer is female. Laura always knew she wasn’t the only woman in Hugo’s life. And she knows she wasn’t the only one with a motive to kill.

The deeper Douglas digs, the more sordid details about Hugo Fletcher he uncovers. And yet nothing compares to the secret Laura guards, a secret that could bring the guilty to justice—or destroy an innocent life forever.

The Woman on the Orient Express by Lindsay Jayne Ashford ($1.50)

Hoping to make a clean break from a fractured marriage, Agatha Christie boards the Orient Express in disguise. But unlike her famous detective Hercule Poirot, she can’t neatly unravel the mysteries she encounters on this fateful journey.

Agatha isn’t the only passenger on board with secrets. Her cabinmate Katharine Keeling’s first marriage ended in tragedy, propelling her toward a second relationship mired in deceit. Nancy Nelson—newly married but carrying another man’s child—is desperate to conceal the pregnancy and teeters on the brink of utter despair. Each woman hides her past from the others, ferociously guarding her secrets. But as the train bound for the Middle East speeds down the track, the parallel courses of their lives shift to intersect—with lasting repercussions.

Filled with evocative imagery, suspense, and emotional complexity, The Woman on the Orient Express explores the bonds of sisterhood forged by shared pain and the power of secrets.

Treasured by Thursday (Weekday Brides Series Book 7) by Catherine Bybee ($1.50)

The seventh and final tale in the dazzling, heartwarming, and pulse-racing Weekday Brides series.

Gabriella Masini: She’s a woman haunted by her past, with the scars to prove it. She believes that fairy tales are for other people. An elite matchmaker at Alliance, she’s great at crunching numbers, but something doesn’t add up with her latest prospective client: a billionaire bad boy with his own secrets. When Gabi refuses to be his temporary wife, Hunter forces her hand with an offer she can’t refuse. But marriage to a man like that could never last…or could it?

Hunter Blackwell: Only his bank account is bigger than his ruthless ability to obtain anything he wants. These days, he has a secret reason to settle down, at least for a while—and he thinks the sensual and sassy Gabi will fit the bill perfectly. But when their marriage of convenience becomes downright dangerous, Hunter must decide how far to take his vow to honor and protect Gabi forever.

How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain by Gregory Berns ($1.50)

The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that’s uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly “man’s best friend.” But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?

After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question—use an MRI machine to scan the dog’s brain. His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner.

With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles. Berns’s research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.

How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.

The Language of Hoofbeats by Catherine Ryan Hyde ($1.50)

From the bestselling author of Pay It Forward comes a story of the heartbreak and healing power of family. New to a small town, Jackie and Paula envision a quiet life for their kids: a young adopted son and two teenage foster children, including the troubled Star. However, they quickly butt heads with their neighbor, Clementine, who disapproves of their lifestyle and is incensed when Star befriends her spirited horse, Comet. Haunted by past tragedy and unable to properly care for Comet, Clem nevertheless resents the bond Star soon shares with the horse. When Star disappears with Comet, the neighbors are thrown together—far too close together. But as the search for the pair wears on, both families must learn to put aside their animosity and confront the choices they’ve made and the scars they carry. Plumbing the depths of regret and forgiveness, The Language of Hoofbeats explores the strange alchemy that transforms a group of people into a family.

Winner of a Rainbow Award

The One I Was by Eliza Graham ($1.50)

Restless, troubled Rosamond Hunter has spent most of her life running away from the past, filled with guilt about her involuntary role in her mother’s death. When her nursing job brings her back to Fairfleet, her childhood home, to care for an elderly refugee, she is forced to confront the ghosts that have haunted her for so long.

Her patient, Benny Gault, first came to Fairfleet, England, in 1939, having fled Nazi Germany on a Kindertransport train.

As his health fails, he and Rosamond begin to confide in each other. At first their tentative friendship revolves around the love they both shared for Rosamond’s glamorous grandmother, Harriet, but as their trust in each other grows, guilty secrets are exposed and history is turned on its head.

From the acclaimed author of Playing with the Moon and Restitution comes a beautiful and haunting tale of friendship, redemption and forgiveness across generations.

Revised edition: This edition of The One I Was includes editorial revisions.

Title: Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella

Author: N. N. Light

Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult, New Adult Romance

Blurb:

Torn between two men, Sally must follow her heart and decide if love will lead her to the city or the countryside.

Twenty-Two year old Sally Rayton returns to the family farm she deserted four years ago to bury her grandfather.

He moaned.

“You drive me crazy when you do that.” His hot breath searing her neck.

“Mmm…” she whispered.

He playfully slapped her butt.

“Vixen.”

She laughed seductively.

“Now go sit at the table and wait for breakfast.” He refilled her coffee. “Tsk tsk tsk, distracting the cook.” He winked.

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic by @malia_ann #MGLit #99cents #fantasy

Book 1 Magic

Title:  Chase Tinker and the House of Magic (The Chase Tinker Series, Book 1)

Author:  Malia Ann Haberman

Genre:  Middle Grade/Tween Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Chase Tinker has never believed in real, honest-to-goodness magic, but that’s all about to change when he’s attacked by a ferocious…soccer ball and t-shirts!?

Before he knows what’s hit him, he’s thrust into a frightening, yet thrilling, paranormal world where a missing dad, out-of-control powers, a 560 year old, incredibly magical house, and a dastardly wicked enemy are only part of all the craziness.

Now it’s up to three daring teenagers, one cute middle grader, and one feisty ferret to save the world’s magic, free will, and light…

Excerpt:

Andy gripped Chase’s shoulder. “It was me! I did something, but I didn’t mean to. I wanted you to stop. You were going to be squashed!” He wouldn’t stop babbling. “No one was moving. What’s going on? I don’t get it. Why—”

“I—I don’t know, Andy. I don’t know,” said Chase, his voice shaking slightly as he clambered to his feet. “Calm down, okay?” He needed time to think. There had to be some kind of reasonable explanation for all the freaky supernatural happenings. He just didn’t know what it was at the moment. “Come on, we better go home. Grab the ball.”

Neither boy said anything as they hurried across the noisy, traffic-filled streets and dodged past other pedestrians. Chase, his mind spinning, kept sneaking glances at Andy. He was afraid his brother would faint dead away right there in the middle of the sidewalk.

Chase breathed a sigh of relief when they finally reached their apartment building. Andy pushed through the revolving door. Chase was about to follow when, out of the blue, an eerie, icy breeze ruffled his hair and swirled around him. Rubbing the goosebumps popping up on his arms, he started to glance back over his shoulder when someone shoved him from behind and toward the open back door of a waiting cab. Tripping, he whacked his head on the door’s top corner. The shadowy interior loomed closer as stars danced in front of his eyes. A hand grabbed his arm.

“Chase! What are you doing?” exclaimed Andy’s voice. Chase shook his head to clear it as Andy pulled him away from the vehicle.

“Wh-what?” mumbled Chase.

“Quit messing around,” said Andy, tugging Chase across the sidewalk. “We need to go inside.”

A hooded man slipped by the boys. As the man turned his head, Chase caught a glimpse of cold, piercing, light-blue eyes that seemed to cut right through him. The strange man slid into the taxi. It swerved into traffic and took off down the street. Feeling oddly threatened, yet not understanding why, Chase followed Andy through the rotating door.

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

If anyone requests “Ukulele Lady,” I’m out of here. I’m not going to do it. Not again. Not for the millionth time. Is that the only song tourists know? Yeesh. Please, tiki god of the Ukulele, don’t let me kill a tourist today.

“‘Ukulele Lady!'” a dumpy, middle-aged man in a Frankie Goes to Hollywood T-shirt screams. He gives me a knowing nod with his balding head to indicate he’s the only one in the room who knows true Hawaiian culture.

I hate him. I imagine bludgeoning him with my koa wood uke.

But I don’t. Do you know how hard it is to get blood out of koa wood? Well…I don’t know either, but I’d guess it isn’t easy.

Instead, I play the damn song—smiling as I imagine shoving his pineapple drink up his…

The crowd cheers as I perform. I know—it’s not so bad having an adoring audience. But this isn’t the audience I want. This is Judah Horowitz’s bar mitzvah. One of the few gigs I could get in Aloha Lagoon.

My name is Hoalohanani Johnson. My mother, Harriet Jones Johnson, is a bit of a Hawaiian-obsessed nut. It’s so bad that it’s to the point where she believes she is the reincarnation of a Hawaiian princess and says that my name came from a dream from an ancestor god. In reality, it probably came from the bottom of a rum bottle.

To her endless annoyance, my redheaded, green-eyed mom comes from a long line of English ancestors and grew up in Kansas. Dad was a third-generation blond, brown-eyed German whose name was shortened to Johnson due to the inability to pronounce whatever the name really was. Neither of my parents had ever been to Hawaii until Mom and I moved here after Dad died.

I go by Nani. And I now live in Aloha Lagoon on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, with my mother, who now calls herself Haliaka and dyes her hair and eyebrows a ridiculous shade of black that does not look natural. I’ve never understood where my dark-brown hair comes from, but I look more native than she does. Always dressed in a muumuu, Mom wears hibiscus flowers in her hair and hangs out on my lanai, singing island songs all day and night, much to my neighbors’ dismay. Sigh.

I finish my set, tell the crowd “aloha,” and am cut off by the DJ who decides suddenly to play a gangsta rap song.

“Thank you!” Gladys Horowitz of Trenton, New Jersey, and Judah’s mother, slips an envelope into my hands before running to the dance floor to shimmy disturbingly. Thirteen-year-old Judah hangs his head in shame.

I make my way through the crowd to the bar and order a decidedly un-Hawaiian vodka tonic.

“Here’s the ten bucks I owe you.” The bartender smiles, handing me money.

I gulp my drink, slapping an empty glass on the bar. “I told you, someone requests it every time.” I take his money and head to my car. My shift in hell is over.

Writing #InspirationalRomance With Heart Without Preaching Religion #99cents #FridayReads

“To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.” – Herman Melville

When I sat down to write, Princess of the Light, I never intended on writing inspirational romance. I had just had a moving encounter with a homeless man and had all these thoughts running around in my head. I had to get them down on paper before they floated out of my head. Wait, I should probably start at the beginning.

Five years ago, I was out for my morning walk and I saw a homeless man sitting in front of a gas station. I looked at him, head uplifted to the sun smiling, and wondered what his story was. Why was he smiling? There was such a peace in his weathered face, I stopped walking and openly stared.  I watched him for a while and knew he was different from other homeless people.  He did not ask for money or hold up a sign. He kept to himself and avoided contact.

A voice suddenly entered my head, “What if you could help him? Would you? What if you were chosen to help him and others like him?”

I searched my heart and after a moment, I replied aloud, “Yes, I would.”

“This is what you were called to do.” The voice echoed in my heart.

I went home that very day and started writing. This simple encounter changed my life forever and inspired me to write Princess of the Light, an inspiring paranormal romance.

Writing inspirational romance can be tricky. I must admit I had some difficulty in the beginning. I wanted to inspire people to show kindness to people in their own city, especially those who are less fortunate and in need of food. I wanted to bring to light the hunger epidemic going on in America and Canada, two of the richest countries in the world. Nevertheless, I didn’t want to sound preachy.

The first thing I did was create a story of a woman who is destined to help someone like the homeless man I met. I wanted her to be strong and able to fight off the real and imagined demons tormenting a homeless man. Everyone likes a hero/heroine to root for and I made her female so I could relate to her.

The second thing I did was map out the homeless man and his story. I gave him a name and created a heart-breaking backstory for him. His story arc had to center on redemption and forgiveness, something everyone could relate.

The third thing I did was to write an edge of your seat novel with plenty of action. The story has action, adventure, romance, obstacles, battles, twists and turns. I wanted the reader to get lost in the story, not realizing they are being inspired.

Here are some writing tips I offer to writing inspirational romance:

  • Weave universal themes throughout your plot. You can be inspirational and reach a broader audience if you are universal. Every religion has many of the same morals and tenants to live by. Instead of mentioning specific religious names, use something more general. The main theme to Princess of the Light is Light versus Darkness. I use the term Light to convey spiritual goodness in a universal way. It does not matter what your spiritual belief is, you can relate to good versus evil.

  • Use everyday language. Being inspirational does not mean you have to sound intellectual or high and mighty. I have found when I write in modern English, I can reach more people than by using formal English.

  • Create real characters. I know this sounds like a no-brainer but stick with me for a minute. Creating characters who are human with flaws have a much bigger impact than having perfect-syndrome characters. Remember, you are trying to reach people. If the reader cannot relate to the main characters, they will not hear the message. They will scoff and mutter how that would never happen. Avoid this roadblock by putting your characters in a real situation and have them react in a natural way.

  • Consider donating part of the proceeds to a charity related to your book. Part of the proceeds of my book go directly to food banks and it’s something every reader can get behind. One of my characters is a homeless man and he relies on food banks. Homeless people all over the world need our help and when readers buy my book, they are helping those in need.

  • Never talk down to people. I cannot stress this enough, when writing inspirational, do not talk down to people. For as long as I can remember, I hated reading books where they preached at me about what I was doing wrong. Often, you can have a greater impact if you are on the same level as your reader. Use yourself as an example or if you are writing fiction, show your main character learning a valuable lesson.

  • Concentrate on the emotional arcs in your plot. Characters and circumstances inspire readers so let that be your focus. Ramp up the emotions in your reader by having your characters go through something. Part of my main character’s background is the emotional scarring from her father’s sudden death. It shapes who she is as a woman and explains her protectiveness over the Walking Man when battling the demons.

  • When writing non-fiction, be sure to do your research. With the birth of Wikipedia and Google, anyone can find out the truth about anything. Be historically accurate and be sure to give proper credentials.  There is nothing worse than reading about Joan of Arc and the weapon she uses isn’t invented for one hundred years after her death.

  • When writing a tell-all memoir, please consider changing the names to protect the innocent. We all have family skeletons, out of courtesy to your family while still being truthful, do the reader a favor, and change the names. Have some fun with it.  You will still be able to tell your story and inspire others; you just do not have to out your family to the world.

  • Consider using the journal/diary format for your story. I love the feel and intimacy of reading an inspirational diary. Even if it is fiction, this is a terrific way to tell your story. Everyone loves reading a diary and it draws the reader into the head of the main character so effectively.

  • Let the story tell itself. You have a story burning in your heart and the worst thing you can do is to get in the way of the story. Unleash the characters and let them use you to tell their story. Free yourself of your insecurities and fears. Do not worry if it is a good story or if you are a good writer. You are primarily a storyteller. Let the story be front and center; the rest of the details will work themselves out.

Writing inspiration is not complicated and anyone can do it. The key to writing a successful inspirational story without preaching is reaching people on an emotional level and showing them they can make a difference in their own corner of the world. Helping others is a characteristic inherent in every human being as is spreading the Light.

Excerpt:

I sunk into the water, and let the suds and scent of lavender engulf me.  The stress of the day finally began to melt away.

My body jolted.

I was in the middle of the desert. There were grass huts and women with hajjis walking quickly around me. Something whizzed past my ear, and a deafening explosion rocked me off my feet. I instinctively curled my body in a fetal position.

I listened for the screams to start, but it was eerily silent. I glanced around, but all I saw was water.

I was still in the bath. What had just happened? Was that a vision? Had I fallen asleep?

My headache was a dull thud now.

A knock on the washroom door made me gasp. I sat upright in the tub and heard my roommate, Amber, call in, “Mary, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good. Just must have fallen asleep.”

“Hey, Amber, what time is it?” I looked down at my pruney fingers and wondered how long I was in the tub.

Amber said, “It’s five thirty.”

I leaned forward and turned on the hot water. The bath water had gotten cold while I had drifted off.

I leaned back as the warm water ran over my toes and closed my eyes, wondering what I should wear tonight. I wanted to look beautiful for Joe. I began to picture every outfit in my closet, and tried to imagine his reaction to it.

A shiver ran down my back and I faintly hear the water splash over the edge.

I opened my eyes and tried to scream. All that came out was a reverse gasp, and I pulled my towel in to cover my body.

A small child was in the tub with me. He couldn’t be older than five. Blood was running down his face, and his body was covered in sand mixed with congealing blood. He was clinging to my towel, and I didn’t know whether to let go of it or yank it back from him. His dark hair was wet with fresh blood. My heart filled with sadness and I quit trying to scream.

As I clung to my own towel, I didn’t know what was happening or what I should do.

The little boy raised his head and more sadness poured into my heart. His eyes were dark pools of grief and despair. They pleaded with me, begging me to help.

How? I mouthed silently.

I jumped when he began to move slowly toward me. He lifted one arm and spoke in a language I didn’t recognize. I knew I didn’t know exactly what his words meant, but I knew what he was saying: He was hurt and needed help.

The closer he came, the more my fear eased and the pain increased. He reached for my arm. His hand was bloodied, and it sent a jolt of electricity and agony throughout my body. I tried to pull away, but his grip was locked on my arm. His eyes turned black and murky, and a voice not his own spoke.

“Princess, help my people,” it said.

I shook my head.

“Let go!” I tried to scream again.

The little boy disappeared, and I jumped out of the bathtub, wet towel still wrapped around my body, and crumbled to the floor. The blood was smeared all around me, and I looked at my arm. The blood was still there, too.

I whimpered, scrubbed at my arm until it was raw, and yet I could still see the blood.
