Anxiety is Love’s Greatest Killer so Stop Panicking #inspiration #motivation #ThursdayThoughts

Did you know that anxiety kills?

Look at any medical journal and you’ll see evidence of how anxiety strips our bodies of health and well-being. Both physically and mentally, anxiety causes us to worry and fret. Love and tranquility can’t penetrate and we’re left with a less than healthy lifestyle.

Last night, I broke down and let anxiety over cigarette smoke leaking into our apartment get the best of me. I started wringing my hands and getting so upset. It didn’t help matters and only caused me to have chest pains. MR N took my hands in his and encouraged me to relax. I took his advice and let is all go. We had the tools to deal with the smoke and it was useless to get so upset.

Like the quote above states, anxiety is love’s greatest killer. It saps the life out of us and the more we worry, the worse off we are. Even our friends and family back away in fear of getting sucked into the anxiety vortex.

So how do we stop anxiety from taking over?

Breathe, meditate/pray, relax.

Stuff happens to us and we have to deal with it. Know what you can control and let the rest of it handle itself. Do it for your health, for yourself and for your loved ones.

Don’t let anxiety win!

true happiness

Happy International Day of Happiness! Today, we’re talking about one of my favorite topics: happiness.

Are you happy? Do you spread happiness and joy wherever you go?

I know, I know, most of us are tired of the whole “Pollyanna Syndrome”, especially when we’re going through a hard time. Trust me, I understand. What I’m talking about is true happiness, not fake happiness. Let me give you an example:

Back in February, I went from being happy to anxious in a matter of moments. Suddenly, my peace went out the window and I was spiraling downwards. I started having anxiety attacks and worrying about “stuff”. What were we going to do? How are we going to make it through?

MR N, meanwhile, had no worries and continued to be happy. He knew in his heart that everything was going to turn out better than we could imagine. “Have faith, my love,” he said. “Be happy and trust in the Lord.”

BOOM! I was in the midst of a spiritual crossroads. Did I have faith? Did I trust in God to provide for us and if so, then why wasn’t I happy?

True happiness, is a journey, not a destination.

Last week, our prayers were answered and everything is taken care of. I got on my knees and thanked God. I felt shame for not having faith and while I was wallowing in my pity, a realization hit: I chose not to stay on the path of happiness but to veer off-course to a thorny trail of misery and despair.

So, on this day and every day, embrace your path of happiness and have faith. Learn from my mistakes and be the embodiment of true happiness. Be grateful for what you have and who you are. Don’t be fake; be happy.

#BellLetsTalk: Take Care of Your #MentalHealth Today and Every Day #inspiration

Do you take care of your mental health just as you take care of your dental health?

Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day and up here in Canada, it’s a day devoted to talking freely about mental health. Several celebrities from Howie Mandel to Kevin O’Leary support this event and for every tweet, Bell Media will donate 5 cents to Canadian Mental Health Initiatives.

For those of you who are long-time followers, you know both MR N and myself are big proponents of taking care of ourselves. Life is immensely busy and in order to function properly, we need a break. For us, it’s relaxing out on our Solarium, holding hands and watching the world go by (every weekend and some week days). Trains, birds and other wildlife fly by and I can’t tell you how soothing it is to sit with my feet up, not doing anything.

What do you do to relax?

Whatever it is, do it. Your mental health depends on it. Like Howie says in the quote above, if we took care of our mental health with the same dedication that we take care of our dental health, we’d all be okay.

We all have had a rough patch, where the world appears to be against us and even the simplest tasks take all of our energy. This is your body telling you your mental health is in trouble. You need to pay attention before it gets out of control.

Talk to someone you trust

Speak to a professional

Get the help you need

You’re not alone. You’re not weak if you need help. In fact, the strongest person I know is strong enough to ask for help when he needs it.

Let’s talk mental health. What do you do to take care of yourself? Share in the comments below and together we can end the stigma.

It’s Not Your Journey by @BekaLombardo is a Must-Read! #Memoir #bookreview #MentalIllness

It's Not Your Journey

Title: It’s Not Your Journey

Author: Rebecca Lombardo

Genre: Memoir

Book Blurb:

In her first published work, Rebecca Lombardo collects her internationally followed blog into the pages of It’s Not Your Journey. Rebecca shares her struggles with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, self-injury, and recovery from a suicide attempt.

Rebecca candidly reveals her real and raw feelings on these subjects, as well as addressing other issues that have contributed to her downward spiral and eventual climb out of her own pit of despair. Issues such as the loss of her mother to lung cancer, the death of her brother, abandonment from friends and family members due to her hospitalization, and more.

At 42 years of age and happily married for nearly 14 years, Rebecca can finally say that she is on her way to reaching her dream. Not only does she hope to help people that are struggling with depression, she hopes to help everyone realize that you are never too old to find your voice.

My Review:

Rebecca Lombardo is one of the bravest people I have had the pleasure to meet. Not does she battle her mental illness daily but she’s put into words her struggle with depression. I must warn you, this is not a happily ever after story of a woman who battled mental illness and is now peacefully happy like Laura Ingalls Wilder running in a field (Little House on a Prairie); it’s a constant struggle. She doesn’t pull any punches and each chapter is filled with stark truth and pain.

Rebecca talks about her family, unconditional love from her husband (who saved her life in my opinion), doctors, how the darkness sucks out the light, cutting, depression and coping mechanisms. Her heart and soul are splashed across the pages, which only makes this book a captivating read. Not since reading Girl Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen, have I read a memoir so gut-wrenchingly candid.

Mental illness is a very real medical condition and we, as a society, need to treat it with the same respect as we do cancer. Advocates like Rebecca, bring the realities to light and I, for one, am grateful. This is a must-read and beautifully written!

Favorite Quote from the Author:

This book is about MY JOURNEY with Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Self-Injury, and more. This is not a text book, nor is it your journey. I am not a professional, rather an advocate that hopes her story can help those going through similar struggles

Your experiences may be entirely different.  I just ask that you respect that I was in a very difficult situation, and in a lot of pain when these pages were written.  I may not have always made the right decisions, or the decisions you would have made.  But, I did was I had to for me at that time.  All I ask is that you please have some respect for my journey.

My Rating:  5+ stars

Author Biography:

I’m 43 years old and have been very happily married for 15 years. I live in Michigan with my fantastic husband, Joe. We don’t have children, but we have 5 cats that we rescued. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was 19, and I’ve been battling it every day since. I write to give my feelings a voice and to help others that are struggling. That is why I started a blog in 2013 after I survived a suicide attempt. I’m extremely grateful to everyone that helped me realize my dream of becoming a published author.

A Blissful State of Mind #anxiety #inspiration #MondayBlogs

Are you in a blissful state of mind?

What does this mean?

Simply put, being in a blissful state of mind is equal to being in the eye of a storm. While there is chaos and crisis surrounding you, at the center, you are at peace. There is a calm that washes over you.

Life is hectic, crazy even, and the only way to attain peace is to have a blissful state of mind.

I have to go to the dentist this morning. I don’t like going to the dentist. In fact, it makes me nervous and anxious. The only way I get through it is to tap into my blissful state of mind. I try to focus my energies on visualization. I visualize my upcoming summer vacation at the spa hotel.

How do you keep your blissful state of mind when the winds of life come at you?

Try visualization. Think of a peaceful place or something you are looking forward to. Imagine every detail and revel in the peace.

#Writer’s Anxiety: A New Perspective

I love this cartoon!!! Each writer has their own anxiety and it is not necessarily greener on the other side of the fence.

How do you deal with anxiety?

Life Lesson #15: When Feeling Overwhelmed, Take a Single Step

journey single step

Are you feeling overwhelmed?  Do you have a work or school project deadline looming?  Do you feel the stress and anxiety building inside your heart?

STOP!  Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.  In.  Out.  In.  Out.  Open your eyes and smile.  Go ahead, I’ll wait here.

Now, do you feel a little better?

Feeling overwhelmed is a natural occurrence and trust me, I have been there.  I received the first notes from my editor.  My first reaction was to feel overwhelmed.  A thousand thoughts of doubt filled my head and I literally had to take a nice long walk to clear my head.

When I came home, I realized that signing with a publisher was only the first step in a long line of steps to making my dream come true.  I poured over the notes again and again until I had memorized each word.  I talked it over with MR N and then I remembered something.

I read an interview of Ernest Hemingway back when I was taking an English Literature course at University.  In the interview Hemingway stated that editing was a bitch but in order to make his masterpiece appeal to the masses, he did what his editor wanted.  “Some called me a prostitute and maybe that is true.  I’m a rich prostitute, though.”

I am not saying that I agree with Hemingway here (and please don’t call me a prostitute) but I agree with what he is trying to convey.  Editing hurts but it is all for the greater good of the book.  I want Princess of the Light to be THE best book the world has ever seem!  In order to do that, I need to make some changes.

Once I came to this realization, the fear and anxiety disappeared.  I broke down the notes into sections and am tackling them one by one.  I took a single step and now am taking several single steps in order to see my dream realized!

When you are feeling overwhelmed, stop and look at what is causing you to feel this way.  Figure out what the next step is and take it.  Take it step by step and you will soon feel confident and on your way to success!

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Stay Happy and Think Positive

stay happy

I have read several posts lately written by people who are depressed, anxious and sad.  They cling to their sadness and find it hard to feel happy.  I understand and I feel empathy for them.  However, holding tightly to your sadness is like trying to hug a balloon.  You squeeze too hard and it explodes.

If you want to be happy and not sad, you need to release that balloon of sadness.  Take a moment right now and close your eyes.  Imagine all the things in your life that make you sad as a cluster of colorful balloons.

Say to yourself, “I release you into the universe and I am going to be happy.”

I promise that your outlook will change and you will stay happy!
