Charmaine Headshot for Author Central

It’s our great pleasure to welcome to the POTL Blog, Charmaine Gordon. She’s a prolific author with more than 85 books to her credit. We asked her to sit down for a candid interview and to share her latest release, Chef’s Surprise. She agreed and without further ado, here she is. Give her a warm welcome. Take it away, Charmaine:

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

The day I spread my wings to drive into New York City in my quest to be a professional actor is a major highlight. The fact I succeeded against all odds is remarkable since I was already in my fifties, my credits filled with community theater plays. And so this mother of many, devoted wife and homemaker, became a butterfly. I was cast in daytime dramas for twelve years, all the while getting bit parts in movies and commercials and then this sweet time collapsed during the run in an Off-Broadway play. My good stage voice felt wrong. A voice doctor examined me. He said I have spasmodic dysphonia. My acting career ended right then. Creative juices flowed and I wrote my first book. A publisher agreed to work with me. Suddenly I became a writer.

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you?

Although I write Romance/Suspense with humor and often therapy dogs fit into the story, I read murder and mayhem. My favorite is John Sandford with his humor mixed into crime and best of all is James Lee Burke with his turn of phrase, charm, and depth in every book.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Names stream by as if they’re on ticker tape. This may be due to my acting career. I don’t worry; it just happens.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

You ask about looking five years ahead. Good question. I just celebrated my 86th birthday. In five years, I expect to celebrate many more, ever the optimist.

Do you have a favorite spot to write? What is it?

I have a cozy room with a wrap-around desk. When my granddaughter was born, daughter, a teacher, expected me to care for her during those hours. I’m just a woman who never says no. My office became filled with baby equipment. I wrote while she napped; rocked her baby seat with my foot to calm her when I had to finish the hot scene in progress. What a special time. I laugh to recall the fun I had with that little girl grown to be nine years old. Now she’s the one to hold my hand and say be careful. We have four cats; one sleeps next to my hand while I type. The big guy sleeps at the door guarding so I step over him with care. The other two sleep until the dinner bell rings. A circus.

What is your best marketing tip?

Marketing is a mystery to me. A presence on Facebook takes valuable time away from writing and yet it’s part of the marketing process. Twitter is faster. All I can say is just do it. You write and promote.

Is this your first book? How many books have you written prior (if any?)

I’ve written a bunch of novels and short stories, many about Mature Romance because ‘it isn’t over ‘til it’s over’. That’s how I feel. Some of the short stories are wrapped in a Volume of three in one. Humor and love prevail in every story. Survive and Thrive runs through every story.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I’m writing a story, another one that came to me in the night. Blue eyes look into blue eyes and then. My youngest son lives in Denmark. He is my confidante and writer superb. He cautioned to find the major flaw. Wow! I lit up inside; my heroine lit up because I gave her the path to follow. Almost thirty thousand words, possibly the end is in sight.

Do you drink? Smoke? What’s your vice?

You ask if I drink/smoke—what’s my vice? If still being very romantic is a vice, I’ll vote for that. I don’t smoke, half a glass of Chardonnay makes me climb on a chair and tap dance.

What do you want your tombstone to say?

Cremation for me but the eulogy will include, What a woman, best Mom ever!

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

If I had a superpower, first I’d heal the damage done to me when I fell last April. Doctors said I’d never walk again yet I can. Yes, I can. Then I’d spread my power to heal ailments wherever I knew about folks who suffered. There are many charities I’d contact to discover who needs the most help.

Do you have any scars? What are they from?

Surgical scars are not worth mentioning and here I am almost writing it down. In New York-ese I say fugetabodit!

What were you like as a child? Your favorite toy?

As the first girl born into a large male family, all my parents expected this cute little girl was to be good, also find a nice husband and be a wonderful mother. As for me, I wanted to dance and sing. No way as far as the family rules stated. I waited my time, married my first love, my pilot and we lived a different life. Slowly I grew as a real woman, not the secluded Chicago girl.  What a change until, as I mentioned before, I spread my wings.

Thank you for this truly interesting interview.

Title Chef’s Surprise

Author Charmaine Gordon

Genre Romance/Suspense

Publisher Vanilla Heart Publishing

Book Blurb

One night, she ran. For the bus to freedom and a new life. She had a plan, and a small box of cash.

With grit and determination, the young girl learned more than lessons at nursing college, the first part of her plan.

Someday, she would become a top chef, but for now, she’d claw her way up the ladder.

There is payback for every crime, and sometimes the payback is more than satisfactory.

Excerpt

Six years after Reva Mercer graduated from a Nursing College in Southern Florida, her job as head chef in a fancy penthouse apartment came true. She laughed to herself with past thoughts racing through her mind. Clayton, the youngest son in the Randall household had fallen for her yet she only had eyes for the older son, a widower, president of the law firm and handsome as all get-out. Tonight the occasion was Clayton’s partnership party. The elder Grandmother found Reva with fine credentials and hired her on the spot. She’d never forget that afternoon.

The head chef at Raos needed a break, so he said. The boss called Reva over. She’d been baking all morning, fascinated with the fluted rim on the special pies. She hid her annoyance and blinked her flirty eyes to give him false hope.

“Take care of those two old ladies and do it now.” She put on her best smile and hurried to take their order. The minute her green eyes connected with the oldest woman, she cared for her, felt the kindness and quality in her.

After the party, when the penthouse quieted down, Reva had an intuition; something was wrong with dear Grans.  She hurried down the quiet hall to find her room, heard moans and pushed the heavy door open. Grans lay on the floor whimpering. Reva lifted her on to the big bed. She knew right away. Grans had a Transcient Ischemic Attack. She yelled for the older son to hurry. “Get your doctor friend, call for an ambulance, we need 911 now. We must save Grans.”

Author Biography

My first job as an actor: I was booked as the legs of Geraldine Ferarro, the first woman to be nominated as vice president to run with Michael DuKacus Governor of Boston. Five o’clock in the a.m., Secret Service men everywhere and me. This job gave me entree to the three Unions. After that, day time dramas, and my first movie, Working Girl where I sang Happy Birthday to Melanie Griffith and shared a hot dog with Harrison Ford. So much fun until my voice failed and now I write every day and love it. Life is a jewel to cherish every day and enjoy. Don’t frown, people. Put a smile on your face and share it.

In Pursuit of Paradise by @KateRandle1 #romance #TWRP #amreading

InPursuitofParadise_w10660_300

Title: In Pursuit of Paradise

Author: Kate Randle

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Book Blurb:

Ship Captain Nicholas Becket knows he needs to change his playboy ways. And when he discovers beautiful divorcee Lily Kingston at a job fair for his cruise line, he thinks he has found someone who can reform him.

Lily is looking for a change of her own, but she isn’t prepared for Nick and all of his baggage. Not to mention her own scars from the recent past. Although she is fiercely attracted to the handsome and dashing millionaire, an unexpected event threatens to tear them apart forever.

Can this pair of lost souls overcome the stormy waters of life’s ups and downs in order to find their true paradise?

Excerpt:

He grasped her hand and brought it to his lips.  He kissed her so delicately that she thought she would faint on the spot.  His touch was warm, light and inviting and he was only kissing her hand.  She imagined how his kiss would feel on her lips and the rest of her body.  What was going on with her?  She felt like she was completely losing her mind.

“No Lily,” he said.  “The pleasure was all mine.”  He paused for a moment. “Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?  That is, if you don’t have to head home right away to Orchard Park.”

Lily hesitated.  She had been on a few casual dates since her divorce six months earlier but she had never been asked out by a complete stranger.  Most of the one-date-only events she had attended had been set up by sympathetic friends, just trying to help her get on with her life.   But none of the nice yet ordinary men had made her feel the way she did right now.

Electricity was crackling between them, she was certain of it.  She felt a strong, unexplained connection to him even if her rational side was telling her it wasn’t a smart idea to get involved with this guy.

What’s Love Got to Do With It? @LiviaQuinn Says Everything! #romance #FridayReads #books

biotm-lq-gp

Oh oh oh, what’s love got to do with it, got to do with it? In the case of romance, everything!

One of the reasons romance is the most popular genre in the world is the emotional connection we feel with the hero and heroine as they overcome obstacles to be together. And there’s something for everyone – small town, sweet, contemporary, historical, suspense, thriller, military, erotic, steampunk, paranormal…the list goes on.

When I read men’s or women’s fiction, while I enjoy the story, I’m not nearly as invested unless there’s a building relationship between the hero and his significant other. With romance, I can enjoy the ride knowing there will be a happily-ever-after, or, in these days of series, at least a happy for now. One of my favorites is a Sandra Brown romance thriller. While I’m not likely to encounter a sexy undercover FBI agent on my doorstep, imagining a happy-ever-after that comes out of the blue is thrilling and makes for a great escape.

In my book Blame it On the Moon, Sheriff Jack Lang is preparing to fight the supernatural bad guys he hadn’t even known existed a couple weeks before, while his girlfriend, Tempest Pomeroy and others lie fading from the effects of the Para-moon. Everything – their lives, their relationship and the safety of the world beyond Destiny is in the balance. He can’t lose this fight.

What is your favorite genre of romance and why?

BlameIOTM web copy

Blame it on the Moon Blurb:

It’s the height of the Para-moon and Sheriff Jack Lang is up to his ‘6’ in alligators. Defending those weaker than himself is in his DNA which is what drove him to become a Navy pilot. Who is he kidding? Alligators he could handle! But supernatural bad guys…

Ragtag doesn’t begin to describe his band of temporary ’heroes’. If he has to go to war with the group that showed up at dawn, he might as well start cutting up white sheets and attaching them to garden stakes.

With Tempe and the other Paramortals ill or incapacitated and the sudden appearance of beings he’s never heard of, will Jack be able to keep Destiny out of the hands of their enemies for the rest of the power down and—very important—keep the humans in the dark?

It’s only twenty-four hours. If worse comes to worse, he has a dragon on his side and a few surprises up his sleeve. “Yippe, ki, yi…” But a lot can happen in twenty-four hours and things don’t always go as planned.

Excerpt:

(Conor and Montana visit the Faerie King)

“Oomph!” I sprang to my feet, ready to fight if it was a trick and to give Conor a talking-to but the three were already nearing the porch, leaving me to bring up the rear.

I heard the chorus of excited fairies before I made it to the front door.

“It’s a dwagon. A weel dwagon,” two seemingly young voices screamed.

“He’s beautiful.” That was a low pitched sultry sounding faerie that sent my hackles up.

“Mr. Dwagon, can I touch your scales…”

“Can you bwiev fire?” Finally, a male voice.

The excitement went on until finally, stranded outside the monstrous entrance until I could get someone’s attention I yelled, “Can I get a word in with Petre and Arabella please? We’re on time clock here.”

Every face in the Inn— all shapes, sizes, and colors of fairie turned to me and I realized I’d underestimated the race, understanding now, too late, the size of a fairy was of no consequence. Having a twenty-foot tall king was like a colossal diversion. It gave one a feeling of superiority as if there were only two fae who could be a threat when in actuality it was a house full of deadly assassins, who could kill a hundred different ways—each.

Even the tiniest pixie seated on Petre’s long narrow leg could probably kill me. This was an entirely magical world and I was out of my depth. The minuscule little fairy on Petre’s knee shivered with the desire to take me on. It was written all over his face from his angry glowing eyes to his posture which was leaning forward from his desire to attack, only Petre’s thumb on his backside keeping him from leaping the distance to my throat.

I cleared my throat and tried to scrape up a modicum of humility. I knew what the word meant but like my thoughts earlier on arrogance, I hadn’t had much call for this trait either, and quite frankly hadn’t ever seen a use for it.

Conor waited for me to dig myself out of the hole I’d dug. His brow lifted, waiting. Petre looked like he wanted to let the little fairie have his way. Only Arabella looked as if she understood my outburst. She was Tempe’s friend so she knew me by extension of that friendship.

I kept my eyes on Bella’s. Was she trying to send me a message? Try a little humble pie.

“I… apologize, King, to you and all of your…er…subjects…er, family. I am a warrior and…” The truth will do. I heard the voice in my head and looked back at Arabella who smiled. The truth, right. I started over. “I do apologize. My urgency and warrior nature leaves me little regard for diplomacy. That is something I must learn obviously. May I enter and speak with you about our current crisis? Time really is of the essence.”

Conor’s shoulders relaxed and I felt a squeeze of my heart when I saw his swords, which had been lifted a half a foot out of the sheath behind his shoulders, settle back into place at the ready should we need to fight our way out. He smiled at me. It made me feel all gooey inside. Sheesh, these emotions were new, totally new, like never in four hundred years new.

Petre’s friendly facade went dark, his face and the musculature in his body changed, the bones nearly protruding through the skin, giving him the appearance of a deadly predator with a long menacing mouthful of razor like teeth. A glance at the other formally cheerful fae revealed similar changes. And the glowing green eyes and household now all looked at me like I was the next course.

For the first time in my life I felt a strong compunction to run, not out of fear— Okay, I could admit to a bit of healthy fear—just this once I would have run, though I doubted it would have done any good without my Dinnshencha power. The vamp gave me speed and strength but I was badly outnumbered by a species that were actually superior to vamps in many ways. Good thing I had Conor. I noticed even Petre cut his eyes toward Conor. The desire to eat me must be pretty strong. Better deliver the message before they lost control.

“Um, I know you’d prefer to eat me more than listen to me, or divide me up with the clan…”

Petre growled, “I don’t share…”

I heard Conor swords slip out of their sheaths. Petre’s posture relaxed slightly. “I was asked to inform you of the Chaos and beg your assistance.” Petre’s eyes flared and the view of his teeth became more prominent as he gave what I assumed – that comment seemed to give him particular pleasure.

And if birds could be said to roll their eyes, I would swear that’s what Petre’s Queen had aimed in his direction. Then Petre said, “Kneel, vampire.”

A Heart Made For Love by Linda Tillis @Linda34434 #historicalromance #TWRP #romance

aheartmadeforlove_w10250_newcouple_final

Title – A Heart Made For Love

Author – Linda Tillis

Genre – Historical/Inspirational Romance

Publisher –  The Wild Rose Press

Book Blurb –

In rural Florida, 1903, Mae Hinton cares for her father and younger brothers, trying to fill her deceased mother’s shoes. Her life is shattered and her faith tested when her innocence is stolen by roving miscreants. Left unconscious, unable to identify her attackers, she pledges to help other victimized women. She pursues an education and learns to deal with bigoted ministers, well-to-do hypocrites, and men with higher regard for their livestock than their women.

Edward Finch is nearly done with medical studies in England when he comes home for the holidays. Love flourishes, and Mae seems close to achieving her dreams of both true love and a haven for victims, once she can explain to him why she carries a pistol. Then her new-found happiness is upset by a murder as one of her attackers returns.

She may settle this herself…or she may find that vengeance truly belongs to God.

Excerpt –

A faint breeze drifted across the balcony, bringing a whiff of something that brought Mae out of her daydream and began a growing sense of unease.

As her nose caught the elusive scent again, her stomach tightened and she began to tremble. The fragrance, wafting in and out of the reach of her memory, was lemongrass. Mae understood it was unreasonable to be this frightened by a hint of lemongrass on the breeze, and she’d almost calmed her foolish nerves when she became aware of male voices. Right behind the palm trees at her shoulders, one of the men said something she could not understand, and then the second one spoke: “Perhaps this is not such a good idea after all.”

Mae wanted to stand, to run, to scream, but she found herself frozen to the bench. Time stood still. She could no longer hear anything. There was just the roaring in her head. She could see Patrick clapping his hands and jumping up and down as the fireworks display illuminated the evening sky. Everyone on the balcony was staring off to the north, where the beautiful colored lights made intricate patterns in the air.

Mae could only hear her inner roar — the sound of the culmination of a fear so strong she was almost paralyzed by it. The only sound she made was the soft rustling of her satin dress as she first stood, then collapsed as if her bones had melted. It was a good minute or two before anyone became aware that the young woman lying on the balcony floor had fainted dead away.

Crashing Into Me by @AuthorRLJackson #romance #books #amreading

crashingintome

Title: Crashing Into Me

Author: R.L Jackson

Genre: Romance

Book Blurb:

A year after being left at the altar, headstrong E.R Nurse, Lana McKenzie is finally piecing her life back together. Tired of dealing with seeing her ex and his new girlfriend at every turn, she longs for blissful solitude and can’t wait to enjoy a peaceful vacation alone in the mountains. However, her plans go awry when a rude stranger literally embeds himself into her life and mind.

Handsome, wealthy, and troubled, Kayden Capshaw is struggling with the death of his brother, while also trying to escape the claws of his controlling mother. In his grief, the last thing Kayden wants to deal with is the fallout from his last run in with the law. Yet, he also longs to get to know the woman now snowed in with him at the house on the hill.

The ice between them thaws every minute they spend together, and they find that they have more in common than they realize. Will they find a way to make it through, or will it all, like the snow, melt away?

Excerpt:

Lana sat in the truck and watched the Tesla speed away. He was driving way too fast for someone she was supposed to be following. She started the truck and pulled onto the roadway and hit the gas. He was running! She should’ve known better and called the police—it served her right. It didn’t take a genius to see that she reacted to him like a grade school crush and when he caught on, he played her like a fiddle. Lana slammed her hands down on the steering wheel as she accelerated towards the car from hell. As hard as she pressed the pedal, the aging Ford couldn’t catch up to the Tesla. As her truck went up a steep hill in the road and came back down, the Tesla was nowhere in sight.

“Damn it!” she yelled, and took her foot off the gas, letting the vehicle slow down to speeds it was more accustomed.

She glanced down at the business card in the middle console and rolled her eyes. Kayden Capshaw had probably spent his entire life getting out of things like this because of his looks and she was just his newest victim. Taking another deep breath, the cherry car freshener slammed into her nostrils and made her feel nauseous. She grabbed it off the rearview mirror, rolled the window down and threw it out.

She knew she’d have to find a way to track him down and make him pay for her truck, but that was tomorrow’s problem. She just wanted to get off the road and make it the rest of the way to Hamby, safe and sound. As pissed as she was with him, she couldn’t get his gaze and those eyes out of her mind. She wiped the thought away and for the first time in a long time she wished her car radio actually worked.

Title: Weeping Well (Vol. 1)

Author: Angel M.B. Chadwick

Genre: Mystery/Thriller/Romance/Suspense/ International Crime fiction/Young Adult/New Adult/Multicultural/Multiracial

Book Blurb:

Fear is like a looking glass….

Excerpt:

Her hand reached down toward the hem of her skirt, feverishly feeling for her sister’s ribbon she’d pinned there.  She started to breathe again but, it was labored. The ribbon was gone. Her mind tangled at a fever pitch. “Why, that sneaky klepto,” she thought.

Dropping the chalk on the floor, she ran out of the side entrance across the promenade, toward the rugby field, on the south side of the campus. Her heart burned like hot coals. Eva tackled Telly to the ground in the middle of rugby drills, intercepting the defender that Telly was supposed to stop. All his teammates and the coach were dumbstruck at how fast she ran.

“If we allowed girls on the team, she’d definitely be the one,” someone murmured, possibly someone on the team.

“Give it back! Or I’ll beat you to death!” she screamed, through clenched teeth, grabbing him by the ears and pulling them hard. He pushed her off him and she landed on her back.  He grabbed her by the arm and yanked her up on her feet.

“You’re totally certifiable, little girl,” he said, his nostrils flared, rubbing both his ears.

Modified: Lunar Medical Book 1 by Amy J. Hamilton @WriteNaughty #EroticSciFi #SciFi #books

modified-lm-bk-1-2500x1563

Title: Modified: Lunar Medical Book 1

Author: Amy J Hamilton

Genre: Erotic Sci Fi

Blurb:

Dayton Bracknell, Clueless Guy in Charge, is reluctantly heading up the Alliance’s unfinished medical facility on a moon. Although away from impending war and a virus on the planet, Day is thoroughly not enjoying the responsibility thrust upon him. The scientists are genetically modifying humans into super soldiers. As you do. But that’s OK, he knows how to tweak vending machine settings-it’s pretty much the same thing, surely?

The next intake of volunteers and prisoners are due to arrive for their modifications. Because putting weapons into the hands of convicts is clearly a splendid idea. Not only do the team have to deal with the sudden lack of comms to the planet, there’s the curious side effect of outstanding libido in the successful Candidates. They may rival Day’s own appetites. Unlikely, he thinks, but still possible.

Questions remain-can he keep it together, contain the first unsuccessful set of candidates that have gone rogue, get new soldiers back to the planet and find someone to sleep with?

Modified is a work of erotic fiction and as such contains explicit sexual content with body parts and everything.

Excerpt:

Dayton sat at the technological monstrosity that was his desk. His personal torture of the moment was a private message he’d received from the planet a few days ago. There was an accompanying dull ache in the centre of his chest. He rubbed at it with his hand as if that would help. He swallowed at the lump in his throat. That didn’t help either. For his own peace of mind, he ceased watching the message and forced himself into denial. Procrastination was becoming his hobby of choice. He rubbed his itchy palms against his trouser legs.

Isolated on a structure dug into a moon, Day had a vague idea of the political state of the planet, Enceffia below. Above, below, wherever the hell it was. Despite everything associated with moon living he was safer where he was rather than back on the ground. He tried to push visions of the planet’s virus outbreak and bombings further from his mind. And the endless talk of war. As if the last war wasn’t bad enough.

He muttered incoherently to himself, well aware that this other stress induced habit was escalating. He visualized extremists bombing similar Enceffia based facilities. The human experiments that were being performed on so called volunteers were big global news.

“And now we’re getting the bloody prisoners” he said. The communication had confirmed that they were going through with what Day considered to be the most ill-advised venture yet. Send convicted murderers to the moon to be “treated” in return for reduced sentences. Because that’s going to end well.

He hit replay on an earlier news loop.

“A medical facility in the capital where human experiments took place has been partially destroyed by a bomb in the early hours of this morning. Widely seen as the way forward in developing a vaccine against the DH strains of the so-called Four Horsemen virus, the vaccine was incorporated into genetic enhancements administered to the subjects in the facility. The number of casualties is expected to be high; the bomb hit the habitation area of the facility.” Behind the ever handsome Duncan was pictorial evidence of the carnage.

“The human experiments are taking place at a time where both global agreement and opposition exists. Due to the growing unrest some of the experiments have since been moved to an incomplete moon facility Lunar Medical 1.”

“That’s us” Day muttered. As soon as life support was viable on the moon, the facility it had seen occupation.

“Take care down there Dunc” Day switched off the mid-air screen with the flick of his wrist. He snorted with surprise when the action worked.

Eve of Chaos by @LiviaQuinn Spotlight + #Giveaway + Special #99cents Sale #Romance

Eve of Chaos EBOOK 11192014

Destiny is a southern town like no other. Its supernatural residents are bound by the Paramortal pact – no matter their species – to protect those weaker than themselves. Montana is Dinnshencha, a warrioress who can shift into any form in defense of a woman in trouble. She’s also half vamp. Relationships with men have never been easy or enduring since the object of her ire is usually the opposite sex. She’s accepted that. For centuries. Until someone left their video game on “share” in a parallel universe and Conor de Sept Flambe’, the dark knight, stalked into the Mardi Gras Ball. Why was he here?

Eve of Chaos is book 3 in the Destiny Paramortals series. As Chaos approaches, new challenges arise, alliances are forged and enemies revealed.

Blurb:

Former Navy pilot, now “Sheriff” Jack Lang knows something’s afoot with Conor’s appearance in Destiny. Crazies are coming out of the woodwork, Paramortals are losing their abilities, and dispositions going AWOL, Jack wants to know who will be left standing beside him when the Para-moon begins. If Flambe´ is what Jack thinks he is, the good guys might have a chance. If not, they’ll be in deep… trouble.  Where’s an F-18 when you need one?

Excerpt:

For the rest of the evening, no matter where she was, if she turned her head, and looked across the expanse of revelers she’d find his eyes locked on hers, as if he’d been waiting for her to turn. Once, she turned back toward the bar but it was oddly clear, only Flambe´ standing there, framed by the oak counter, one of his swords standing in front of him on its hilt, the tip nearly reaching the Knight’s chest. He’d been cleaning it, shining and stroking the deadly edges with a cloth, so intimately acquainted with them that he wasn’t even watching.

His attention was all on her, the rims of his eyes lined like a predator’s, causing her to shiver briefly, but if that look was for her, he should know she was not prey. By her very nature, predators were her enemy. And still she felt the pull of pure heat as if they were connected in some way.

Sometime after Tempe and Jack left, the orchestra had suddenly stopped playing the zydeco music and the unlikely strains of a minuet had filled the room. Everyone looked up in surprise. Then as it had when he entered, the crowd split, giving the swordsman a wide berth as he strode purposefully across the ballroom floor toward Montana’s side of the room, his gaze locked on hers the whole way. Surely… she broke the contact to search the area around her, but there was no one nearby. He was coming for her. Her Dinnshencha reared up, readying for this formal meeting. It seemed impossible that she hadn’t actually met him yet.

His broad black tattooed shoulders led as his long strides moved closer, the flared pants hugging his powerful thighs, flowing around his calves and the swords catching the light overhead, making them flash with dazzling fire. He came to a controlled stop inches from her and the air seemed to leave the room, the sounds of feet shifting, voices, and laughter dying as he planted his feet in front of her.

The crowd waited. She waited. Not a muscle, pore or eyelash flickered while the room held its collective breath in expectation. The Knight’s arms rose, stretching the thick tattoos across his shoulders, giving the appearance of wings spreading, preparing to lift off. The room inhaled as one. Flambe´s eyes dropped; he brought one hand to his torso, and bowed. For a matter of seconds all she could see was his shiny black shoulder length hair and the pointy tips on the tattoos. The collective “ahhs” of the women in the room penetrated her awareness as he straightened again and spoke. “Lass, may I hav’ this dance?”

The Inheritance by @JacquelineSeewa (ld) #RomanticMystery #Mystery #NewRelease

the-inheritance-front-cover-2

Title: THE INHERITANCE

Author: Jacqueline Seewald

Genre: Romantic Mystery

Publisher: Intrigue Publishing

Book Blurb:

Jennifer Stoddard, a thirty-five-year-old widow with an eight-year-old son, receives a surprising letter which will change her life. Jennifer’s grandmother has passed away and named Jen as sole heir to her estate. To claim her inheritance she must return to Bloomingvale, the town in the Midwest where she grew up. Jen is informed by her grandmother’s attorney that to inherit she must meet the condition of living in her grandmother’s house for two years. Since the estate is substantial, she agrees. However, there are those who will stop at nothing to make certain that Jennifer does not inherit.

Jennifer is forced to call on old flame Police Chief Grant Coleman for help and protection.

Excerpt:

Late that afternoon as Jen left the house and started to drive away, a strange sound whizzed across the open front car windows from the driver’s side through the passenger side. She was startled by the sound. Her heart began to pound. Jen glanced over at the thicket of overgrown shrubs and trees to the side of the grounds that led back into woodlands. Had the sound been a bullet? If so, it had nearly hit her. Her hands shook on the driver’s wheel as she took off at high speed.

One block away she heard the police siren and saw the flashing lights. She groaned. Not again! He signaled with his hand, pointing his index finger for her to pull over. It was all she could do not to burst into tears.

Grant Coleman approached the car like a gunfighter in a spaghetti western. “I thought you learned something the first time,” he said. “Guess I was wrong. License and registration.” He held out his hand with a bored, impatient gesture.

“I have a very good reason for speeding.”

The smile was more of a smirk. The man was infuriating! “I’ve heard them all, but you can try.”

“As I left my grandmother’s house, a bullet passed through my car. I had the windows rolled down. So they weren’t broken, but it just missed hitting me.”

He stared at her. “Maybe it was a kid with a Beebe gun. Are you certain it was a bullet breezing by you? How familiar are you with weapons?”

“Not familiar at all, but I know what I heard.” Jen swallowed hard. “I think someone might have intended to shoot me.”

He let out a loud laugh. “In Bloomingvale? I doubt that very much.”

“So you’re not taking this seriously?” She folded her arms over her chest.

“Admit it. You’re just looking for an excuse to keep me from writing you another ticket.” His intense gray eyes bore into her like the steel blade of a dagger.

Jen raised her chin and stiffened her spine. “You are so wrong. Why don’t you check the area near the house, just to see if you can find anything.”

“Waste of time.” He leaned toward her and she felt his breath on her cheek which caused her to shiver. “Tell you what I will do though. I won’t write you a ticket this time because that’s the most creative excuse I’ve ever heard.”

“So glad I managed to amuse you,” she said.

Jen watched him drive off. He was probably still laughing, the sexy jerk. Several people had come out of their houses and were staring at her. Jen managed to restart her car and drove off before others gathered. She certainly didn’t want to make a spectacle of herself. Letting out a shaky breath, Jen wasn’t certain now if she’d really heard what she thought she had. A professional law enforcement officer didn’t think anything of it. She supposed it might have been nothing at all. Maybe it was a child with a Beebe gun as he suggested. But try as hard as she might, Jen couldn’t convince herself.

“I thought I lost you forever” The Highlander’s English Woman @RuthACasie #romance

thehighlandersenglishwoman300-1

Title: The Highlander’s English Woman

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

Laura Reynolds is in love with her long-time friend, Jamie Maxwell Collins. She adores his playful sense of humor, caring nature as well as his strong sense of family and honor.

Jamie lives across the border in Scotland. Outwardly carefree, he hides a dark secret. He can’t involve Laura in this deception. He can’t give her hope for a future together.

Laura stumbles upon Jamie’s secret. In her heart of hearts she knows Jamie is innocent. Their relationship in tatters and with no hope of reconciliation, she plays a deadly game to exonerate Jamie, she agrees to a political marriage. She has no idea the entire game has been orchestrated by her future husband, Jamie’s greatest enemy.

Excerpt:

“Hold me. Don’t let me go,” Laura said. She nuzzled his neck and sank into his strong embrace. “Love me,” she whispered in his ear. His muscles tensed in response. She wanted his arms around her, his lips touching hers.

They sank on the bed and held each other close. She was afraid to let him go, afraid the emptiness would find her, afraid of losing him, again. With an unending thirst, she focused on his mouth, the shape of his lips, the kisses that they promised.

His hand stroked the side of her body from her breast to her thigh, claiming them. One stroke of her breast and she tugged on his shirt. He didn’t hesitate. He obliged her and pulled it off. Her hand played down the hard planes of his chest. Her eyes widened at the sight of the scars on his chest.

“These weren’t here.” She traced them with her finger.

He stopped her hand and brought it to his lips. “Fighting for The Maxwell comes with a price. I don’t want to think of the Maxwell.” He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

She closed her eyes and reveled in the tingling sensation racing through her body and put her head on his shoulder.

He opened her bodice and stroked the top of her chest then, with trembling hands, touched her breasts. A low moan escaped her lips.

Jamie bent and kissed each breast.

He ignited a flame inside her that set her on fire. Delicious shudders pulsed through her. She pulled his head away and kissed him.

Her fingers traced the scars and the muscles of his chest danced at the light touch. “Where did you get this one?”

“In a fight with the English.” His rapt gaze focused on her face.

Her lips brushed against his skin.  His skin deckled in gooseflesh. Her finger moved on. “And this one?”

“A reiver attack,” his voice was husky and seductive.

The hooded passion in his eyes encouraged her. She kissed the scar and moved on. The tips of her fingers traced down his chest. “Here is another.” The scar snaked below his navel. Another kiss. Her fingers trailed down further.

He pulled her up and rolled on top of her. Her body instinctively arched against his. “You are mine.” His warm breath brushed against her face. Two heartbeats passed. “Do you hear me? You’re mine,” he said more urgently.

“Yes.” Her voice an intimate whisper. His lips tugged into a sideways grin.

His smile that made her bones go limp. It was his magic.

Excerpt:

Chapter 13, “Mom I’d Like to Introduce You to My Fiancé”

Scene Prologue: At this point in the story, Lacy Dawn, the protagonist, is twelve years old. An android named DotCom (his name is a recurring pun throughout the novel) installed a port in her upper spine and has directly downloaded data into her brain for the last several years. His ship is hidden in a cave in the Woods behind the family’s house in the hollow. DotCom was sent to Earth to train and recruit Lacy Dawn to save the universe from an imminent threat, but was recalled due to slow performance. In this scene, DotCom has returned to Earth and Jenny, the mother, meets him for the first time.

*****

…..… Jenny (the mother) walked up the hill to Roundabend. She called Lacy Dawn’s name every few yards. Her muddy tennis shoes slipped and slid.

I hear her voice. Why won’t she answer me?

“Sounds like she’s talking to someone,” Jenny said to the Woods.

Nobody responded. The trees weren’t supposed to since Jenny was no longer a child. Her former best friends had made no long-term commitment beyond childhood victimization. They had not agreed to help her deal with domestic violence in adulthood. She hugged the closest tree.

I will always love you guys.

Jenny quickened her pace, stopped, and listened for human voices. A few yards later, she stopped again.

Now it sounds like she’s behind me instead of in front.

Jenny looked to the left of the path.

There ain’t no cave Roundabend, but there it is.

She walked toward the entrance. The voices grew louder and she looked inside. Lacy Dawn sat on a bright orange recliner. Tears streamed down her face.  Jenny ran to her daughter through a cave that didn’t exit and into a blue light that did.

“All right, you mother f**ker!”

“Mom!” Lacy Dawn yelled. “You didn’t say, ‘It’s me’ like you’re supposed to (a traditional announcement mentioned earlier in the story).”

DotCom (the android) sat naked in a lotus position on the floor in front of the recliner.  Jenny covered Lacy Dawn with her body and glared at him.

“Grrrrr,” emanated from Jenny.  It was a sound similar to the one that Brownie (Lacy Dawn’s dog) made the entire time the food stamp woman was at their house.  It was a sound that filled the atmosphere with hate.  No one moved.  The spaceship’s door slid shut.

“Mommmmmy, I can’t breathe. Get up.”

“You make one move you sonofabitch and I’ll tear your heart out,” Jenny repositioned to take her weight off Lacy Dawn.

Stay between them.

“Mommy, he’s my friend. More than my friend, we’re going to get married when I’m old enough — like when I turn fourteen. He’s my boyfriend — what you call it — my fiancé.”

“You been messin’ with my little girl you pervert!” Jenny readied to pounce.

“MOM!  Take a chill pill! He ain’t been messing with me. He’s a good person, or whatever. Anyway, he’s not a pervert. You need to just calm down and get off me.”

Jenny stood up. DotCom stood up. Jenny’s jaw dropped.

He ain’t got no private parts, not even a little bump.

“DotCom, I’d like to introduce you to my mommy, Mrs. Jenny Hickman. Mommy, I’d like to introduce you to my fiancé, DotCom.”

Jenny sat down on the recliner. Her face was less than a foot from DotCom’s crotch and she stared straight at it. It was smooth, hairless, and odor free.

“Mrs. Hickman, I apologize for any inconvenience that this misunderstanding has caused. It is very nice to meet you after having heard so much. You arrived earlier than expected. I did not have time to properly prepare and receive. Again, I apologize.”

I will need much more training if I’m ever assigned to a more formal setting than a cave, such as to the United Nations.

“Come on, Mommy. Give him a hug or something.”

Jenny’s left eye twitched.

DotCom put on clothing that Lacy Dawn had bought him at Goodwill. It hung a little loose until he modified his body. Lacy Dawn hugged her mother…

…(scene of Dwayne, the father, overheard by those in the spaceship while talking to himself)… “Besides, the transmitter was part of Daddy’s treatment. There’re a lot of other things that he did to help fix Daddy. DotCom is like a doctor. You can see that Daddy has gotten better every day. And no, there ain’t no transmitter in you. DotCom figured you out like a good doctor and the only things wrong are a lack of opportunity and rotten teeth that poison your body. You don’t need no transmitter. He just gave you a few shots of ego boost. I don’t know what medicine that is, but I trust him. You ain’t complained since the shots started — not even with an upset stomach.”

“He’s a doctor?” Jenny asked.

“What’s your problem anyway?” Lacy Dawn asked. “I know.  You’re prejudiced. You told me that people have much more in common than they do that’s different — even if someone is a different color or religion, or from a different state than us. You told me to try to become friends because sometimes that person may need a good friend. Now, here you are acting like a butt hole about my boyfriend. You’re prejudiced because he’s different than us.”

“Honey, he’s not even a person – that’s about as different as a boyfriend can get,” Jenny said.

“So?”

Mommy’s right. Maybe I need a different argument.

A fast clicking sound, a blur of motion, and a familiar smell assaulted them.

“What’s that?” Jenny asked.

She moved to protect her daughter from whatever threat loomed. Brownie, who had been granted 27 / 7 access to the ship, bounded over the orange recliner, knocked DotCom to the floor, licked DotCom’s face, and rubbed his head on Jenny’s leg. He then jumped onto the recliner and lay down. His tail wagged throughout. Jenny sat down on the recliner beside Brownie and looked at Lacy Dawn.

“But, you were crying when I first came in. That thing was hurting you.” Jenny shook her finger at DotCom to emphasize a different argument against him.

“Mommy, I’m so happy that I couldn’t help but cry. My man just came home from an out-of-state job. I didn’t talk to him for a whole year. Before he left, he told me that he wasn’t even sure if he’d be able to come home. I still don’t know what happened while he was gone. We ain’t had no chance to talk. All I know is that he’s home and I’m sooooo happy.”

“Your man came home from an out-of-state job?” Jenny patted Brownie on his head, some more and some more….

It’s unusual for a man to promise to come back home and ever be seen again. Brownie likes him and that’s a good sign. Maybe she’s right about him helping Dwayne. Something sure did and it wasn’t me. It is a nice living room. They’ve been together for a while and I ain’t seen a mark on her. That’s unusual too. He ain’t got no private parts and that’s another good thing. Hell, if I get in the middle, she’d just run off with him anyway. Id better play it smart. I don’t want to lose my baby.

“What about his stupid name?” Jenny asked.

“I’ve got a stupid name, too. All the kids at school call me hick because my last name is Hickman.”

“My name was given to me by my manager a very long time ago. It represents a respected tradition — the persistent marketing of that which is not necessarily the most needed. I spam…,” DotCom said.

They both glared at him.

“Dwayne is sure to be home. I don’t want him to worry. Let’s go,” Jenny said.

“Okay, Mommy.”

“I love you, DotCom,” Lacy Dawn stepped out the ship’s door, which had slid open. Brownie and Jenny were right behind her.

“I love you too,” DotCom said.

Lacy Dawn and Jenny held hands and walked down the path toward home. The trees didn’t smile — at least not so Jenny would notice. On the other hand, no living thing obstructed, intruded, or interfered with the rite.

Author Biography:

Robert Eggleton has served as a children’s advocate in an impoverished state for over forty years. He is best known for his investigative reports about children’s programs, most of which were published by the West Virginia Supreme Court where he worked from 1982 through 1997, and which also included publication of models of serving disadvantaged and homeless children in the community instead of in large institutions, research into foster care drift involving children bouncing from one home to the next — never finding a permanent loving family, and statistical reports on the occurrence and correlates of child abuse and delinquency.

Today, he is a recently retired children’s psychotherapist from the mental health center in Charleston, West Virginia, where he specialized in helping victims cope with and overcome physical and sexual abuse, and other mental health concerns. Rarity from the Hollow is his debut novel. Its release followed publication of three short Lacy Dawn Adventures in magazines: Wingspan Quarterly, Beyond Centauri, and Atomjack Science Fiction.

The second edition of Rarity from the Hollow was released on November 3, 2016. Author proceeds have been donated to a child abuse prevention program operated by Children’s Home Society of West Virginia. http://www.childhswv.org/ Robert continues to write fiction with new adventures based on a protagonist that is a composite character of children that he met when delivering group therapy services. The overall theme of his stories remains victimization to empowerment.

Sally From Planting the Seeds of Love Sits Down With MRS N #romance #ASMSG #IARTG

PTSOL

Mrs. N: It’s my great pleasure to introduce you to one of my favorite characters, Sally Rayton. She’s the leading lady in Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella.

Sally: For Pete’s sake, you’re going to have them think I’m a celebrity, like Kristin Kreuk. I’m just a normal girl trying to figure out what I want to do with my life.

Mrs. N: This was your idea, Sally. Now’s not the time to be modest. These fine readers want to know more about you. (pauses to look down) Now then let’s start with the first question. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Sally: Hmm, I used to think that opening my own café in the city, away from the Rayton Farm and all the gossipers, was my idea of happiness.

Mrs. N: And now?

Sally: Now, I’m conflicted. I mean, on one hand I have Trevor and life with him in the city is perfect. We make the perfect couple and both have our sights set on becoming a success in the city. But then there’s Jack…

Mrs. N: Ah yes, Jack, the sexy boy next door who’s loved you since you were little.

Sally: (rolls eyes) You always bring that up. Yes, Jack’s my best friend and I guess he could be considered sexy, although I don’t see him that way.

Mrs. N: You don’t?

Sally: Well… maybe a little. (clears throat nervously) Can we move onto the next question?

Mrs. N: Sure… What is your greatest fear?

Sally: Oh, that’s easy, ending up like my sister. My sister got pregnant when she was fifteen, ran away from home with the Mayor’s son and hasn’t been heard of since.

Mrs. N: Why is that a fear of yours?

Sally: You should realize that since my sister was six years older than me, the gossipers reminded me on a daily basis what a disappointment she became and an embarrassment to the Rayton name. See, we’re one of the oldest families in the county and well-respected. But my sister messed up and people used her misfortune to make themselves feel better. I vowed when I was fifteen, I would NEVER allow people to talk that way about me.

Mrs. N: Good for you. You’re a strong woman and I admire that trait in you. What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Sally: I hate liars. I’m a big girl. I’d much rather someone speaks the truth to me than lie. I guess I learned that from my grandfather. I remember when I was about six years old, I chased rabbits into the woods behind the barn. I knew I wasn’t allowed back there but I did it anyway. When it was time for supper, my grandfather asked me where I’d been. I lied and told him I was off playing in the wheat field. He scolded me for not only going back into the woods (which he saw from the barn window) but lying about it. “Never lie, Sally, especially to me. It’s the worst thing you can do.” I never forgot and adopted his view on lying.

Mrs. N: I already know the answer to this next question. What is your greatest extravagance?

Sally: Oooh, my books. I love books and have a nice collection of leather-bound classics. Trevor gave me a first-edition of one of my favorite books and it was the nicest birthday present I’ve ever received.

Mrs. N: How lovely. That must’ve cost him a pretty penny. First editions are expensive but even more so in hardcover.

Sally: I don’t know how much it cost but evidentially he thought I was worth it.

Mrs. N: No need to be defensive, dear. I was merely pointing out a fact.

Sally: I’m sorry, I’m a little touchy when it comes to money.

Mrs. N: It’s okay, I know how much Trevor means to you. Let’s move on to the last question. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

Sally: (Laughs) You’ll think it’s funny but I’d love to come back as a bunny. They’re soft, fluffy and hop around the garden finding food to nibble on. Think Peter Cottontail, that’s me.

Mrs. N: (Laughs) Only it would be Sally Cottontail in your case. Thank you, Sally, for sitting down for a few moments and chatting with me.

Sally: It was my pleasure.

Mrs. N: If you’d like to find out more about this fascinating love triangle (Sally, Trevor and Jack), now is a great time to purchase Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella.

Title: Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella

Author: N. N. Light

Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult, New Adult Romance

Blurb:

Torn between two men, Sally must follow her heart and decide if love will lead her to the city or the countryside.

Twenty-Two year old Sally Rayton returns to the family farm she deserted four years ago to bury her grandfather. Her plan: to settle her grandfather’s estate and return to her life in the city with her boyfriend, Trevor Mattson.

Her childhood friend, Jack Smith, has other ideas.

Jack convinces Sally to transform the farm into a brewery and fulfill her grandfather’s dream while keeping the Rayton Farm in the family. Sally works side-by-side with Jack while Trevor is hundreds of miles away in the city. The more time she spends with Jack, the stronger her feelings are for him.

When Trevor shows up to propose to Sally right before Christmas and finds her in Jack’s embrace, she must make the biggest choice of her life: true love.

Excerpt:

“Jack, thank you so much for the lift into town,” a woman replied behind Sally. “Let’s grab some lunch before we shop.”

Sally froze. She stared at Linda who shook her head. What was Jack doing with a woman in town?

“Here, let me take your coat, Emma,” Jack said.

Emma? mouthed Sally to Linda.

“She’s the daughter of Lonnie and Mary Beth.” Linda gave Emma the look-over and scoffed, “She can’t be a day over sixteen.”

“What do I do?” Sally panicked. Normally she didn’t care what Jack did or who he went off with. Curiosity got the better of her and she turned around.

Emma stood five foot three with curly blonde hair and innocent green eyes. Her figure was slim with curves in all the right places. Sally narrowed her eyes as Emma stood on tiptoe to kiss Jack on the cheek.

Fuming, Sally turned around. Linda chuckled.

“What?”

“You better tone down your jealousy, darlin’. You’re shooting darts everywhere.”

Sally gritted her teeth.

“I’m not jealous. If Jack wants school girls kissing him, what do I care?” She took a deep drink of her coffee, draining the cup. She slammed it down.

“Simmer down, here they come,” whispered Linda. She waved to Jack while Sally swore under her breath.

“Well, fancy meeting you two here,” Jack drawled.

Without looking up Sally retorted, “I told you I was coming into town today.”

Linda kicked Sally’s leg under the table. Sally plastered a smile across her face, greeting Jack and Emma.

“Yes, what a coincidence.” Sally noticed Emma looping her arm in Jack’s and snuggling closer.

“I was on my way into town to pick up those parts we ordered for the tractor when I ran into Emma walking by herself in the snow.” Jack smiled. Emma squeezed his arm.

“He pulled over and offered me a lift into town. Isn’t he a gentleman?” cooed Emma. Jack patted her hand.

Sally’s chest constricted at the sight of the two of them acting all couple-y. She stared into his twinkling eyes. Oh God, is he laughing at me? Emma can’t have him. He’s mine. Wait what?

“So,” Linda broke the strained silence. “I have to go powder my nose. Emma, would you care to join me?”

“What’s that?” Emma looked confused.

Linda laughed. “It’s the bathroom, dear sweet child.” She stood up, untangled Emma from Jack and guided Emma away from the table.

Jack sat down.

“What’s with you today?” he asked.

“Nothing.” Sally cleared her throat.

He raised an eyebrow.

“Really!” A few diners turned to stare. Sally flushed with embarrassment. She didn’t mean to talk so loud. She looked everywhere except in Jack’s direction.

Jack observed Sally as she fidgeted, first with her coffee cup then with the silverware. His gaze unnerved her and she practically jumped out of her chair when he placed a hand over hers. Electricity flew up her arm while warmth filled her core. Butterflies raced around her stomach, only she didn’t feel sick; she pulsed with life, like never before.

“Sally…look at me.”

Sally shook her head.

“You’ll only laugh at me.”

Jack’s thumb caressed her hand gently, causing her breath to hitch.

“You know I’d never laugh at you. Laugh with you, definitely, but never at you.”

Sally lifted her gaze to meet Jack’s loving eyes. He slid his fingers between hers, never breaking eye contact. Sparks flew between them. He moistened his lips with a flick of his tongue. Her gaze dropped to his lips.

“Please tell me. I’m begging you,” he whispered.

Unable to think clearly through the fog of desire, Sally tilted her head to one side. Her skin vibrated with heat while her nerve-endings jumped at the slightest caress.

“Tell you what?” she whispered. Her throat dry, her breathing shallow, she wet her lips with her tongue. She was under a spell and everything fell away except for Jack’s passionate eyes.

“Tell me what my wasted heart needs to hear.” His eyes flashed. “Tell me Emma made you jealous.”

Sally started to nod but Emma interrupted.

“What are you guys talking about in hushed tones? Crops and stuff?”

Jack groaned. He dropped Sally’s hand as if it burned him, causing the water glasses to jostle.

guardian-of-the-way-cover-jpeg

Title: Guardian of the Way

Author: Diane Moat

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Tagline:

When eighteen-year-old Cass discovers that she’s part fae, a battle begins among supernatural  creatures to appoint her the new Guardian who’ll open up the Way between the worlds.

Book Blurb:

It’s been two centuries since someone murdered the last Guardian of the Way, closing off this world from the many realms of magic and fae.

Cassiopeia “Cass” Wilson is an eighteen-year-old living on her own for the first time. The only magic she’s interested in is the kind that will help her pay the bills on time. Little does she know that a trip to the hospital after a fainting spell will change her life forever.

Cass soon learns she may be fae, and everything points to her being the next Guardian of the Way. There’s just one problem: whoever—or whatever—killed the last Guardian wants Cass dead too.

Cass quickly runs into problems, and an attack by djinn is just the first. But Cass joins forces with a wrath daemon, were-creatures, and fae on a quest to reach the Lighthouse—the site of the Way.

Cass soon learns about wizards desperate to keep the Way closed to serve their dark purposes, and she comes to a crossroads: will she take the test to become the new Guardian and leave her normal life behind? Or will the Way remain closed to all who need it?

Hear what readers are saying about Guardian of the Way:

“Cass Wilson takes us right along with her in this journey, revealing a world she never knew existed, with a diverse new tribe of companions, protectors, and friends. A must read for anyone who wonders what else is out there beyond what we can see.” by C.S.

“A strong story, full of surprises. Getting there is half the fun, but is she meant for this challenging job between many worlds? Quite worth a read.” by M. Hayden

Excerpt:

A massive lighthouse sits off the coast of Maine near the town of Cutler. The building has stood empty for over two-hundred years. Those who can make out the edifice view a tower of stone and paned glass unlike any other lighthouse they have ever seen. The specific dimensions are hard to determine as this structure, unlike most lighthouses, is not a single tower. Instead, it has a broader base than usual, with what appear to be turrets at the top. The construction may even consist of two buildings connected at the middle. But not many people question this odd lighthouse, or even wonder why it remains vacant.

This is because most Humans can’t actually see the Lighthouse. A few who have a drop of Fey, Were or “Other” blood may perceive an ordinary lighthouse. And some instinct guides these souls to avoid the building, though they wouldn’t be able to voice why if they were asked. True Fey, Were, Vampires, and other supernatural beings can certainly identify the building known to them as the Lighthouse, but none of them dare try to enter. Those genuine descendants know the Way is blocked, and has been for the two-hundred years the Lighthouse has stood dark.

The place has sat empty since the most recent Lighthouse Guardian died one horrible night at the pinnacle. The Guardian had only been Guardian for four-hundred years and was killed well before his time. Inside the Lighthouse lies the only permanent causeway (the “Way”) between the worlds of magic and the world of the mundane. Fey, Were, Vampires and other non-Humans, despite the barrier to journeying across from inside the Lighthouse, could still travel between these two worlds using costly magic spells—but such a trip is difficult and dangerous. The entrance to the Way closed at the time of the Guardian’s death, and neither magic nor mundane had been able to open it since.

On one late evening in particular, a large man sat under a tree just outside of Cutler, eating the stew his mate had made earlier and placed in a storage dish. The season was early fall, but already the nights had a bite to them. The man was on his third shift of watch duty in a row. He had pulled this job ten months previously and was glad the rotations were only a year long. He would be back home in Louisiana before the truly bitter winter was well underway.

The man was suddenly blinded by a light coming from the very top of the Lighthouse. The man’s reflexes were frighteningly quick, but even so he dropped his stew. Flabbergasted, he stared directly at the light for a full twenty seconds, until he no longer cared about the meal. He turned away from the brightness, and shedding his clothes, he found his legs shortening and his arms lengthening. In less than a minute, a large dark-grey Wolf shook himself once, then again. Glancing back for a final look at the Lighthouse, the Wolf began running toward the town.

He wouldn’t stop running until he was at his pack leader’s house. From there, word would spread like a virus. Everything was different now. For somewhere in this ordinary domain, two minutes before, a brand-new Guardian had been born.

The Golden Rule for Empowering Professional Relationships by @ignatius1939 #books

the-golden-rule-book-cover-front

Title: The Golden Rule for Empowering Professional Relationships

Author: Ignatius Fernandez

Genre: Business/ Corporate Governance

Publisher: Wolf Creek Press, Oregon

Book Blurb:

THE GOLDEN RULE has JESUS CHRIST pointing the way to heightened professional relationships. JESUS is portrayed, not as the spiritual or religious leader the world has known, but as an unmatched professional the world has yet to know. He is an outstanding leader who walks tall, a powerful communicator who touches minds and hearts, and a peerless teacher who influences by example. The Golden Rule is the engaging story – nonfiction that reads like fiction – of a group of earnest professionals who embark on a journey of discovery. Their mission is to find a role model who will inspire them to change the way they act, react and interact. Their search culminates in an encounter with a role model beyond compare – JESUS CHRIST. The life and times of Jesus Christ have been analyzed from many perspectives, but never before from the corporate angle with focus on professional relationships, as in The Golden Rule for Empowering Professional Relationships. Jesus’ example stands out not just for our personal lives, but also for our professional conduct. In short, Jesus emerges as the definitive leader in every respect. As we go on the monumental journey with the characters in the plot, we will find that the Golden Rule goes beyond being a maxim and becomes the very essence of evaluating our personal and professional lives. We uncover secrets, unlearn past programming and make a paradigm shift in the way we conduct ourselves. If we are looking for a book that has the power to transform us, here it is —THE GOLDEN RULE.

Praise for the book:

“How can the ways of JESUS mesh successfully with corporate life? Why would we want it to? Ignatius Fernandez describes the ways of JESUS so well. He describes the humbleness, inclusiveness and forgiving nature of JESUS. He describes the how and why we could include it in business relationships. This book is for Christians of all experiences, all denominations. Also, it is for business leaders of all levels. It is well-written and relevant. It is simple, to the point and poignant.” Stephanie Rollins.

” Ignatius Fernandez has produced a scholarly and absorbing analysis of how Jesus Christ’s behavior sets an example, not just for our personal lives, but also for our professional conduct, and gives a compelling and rigorous account of how Jesus was in fact the definitive leader in every respect.” Paul Sellers, Director, British Council, UK.

Excerpt:

“Speaking of buoyancy, I am thrilled at the idea that our lead could lend some cheer to those who wish to learn. I had in mind other corporations and professionals, in general. I have not known of any team in the Industrial World consciously choosing to follow Jesus’ Golden Rule. I have known of Christian Congregations and Groups who have tried. Some of them succeeded in part; many did not because of the compulsions and temptations in daily life. People outside the religious fold have not made it their driving principle. Imagine what change can come about when doctors, attorneys, judges, consultants, professors, media managers, bankers, retailers, salespersons and service providers join our ranks! How different transactions will be! When the mind-set is changed, the conversion will be easier. People need to be convinced that the Golden Rule is in their interest; that long term gains and enduring relationships can be built only through understanding and following Jesus’ teachings, which are basic. Your customer, internal or external, will be good to you only if you are good to him. You can’t argue against that. Unless you are fair in your dealings you cannot expect your customer to transact with you again. You can’t dispute that. Once professionals like us stop to think, the logic in Jesus’ words cannot be refuted. The problem is in stopping to think when we are in a mad rush to make more and more money. I am hopeful that the change will come, though slowly, when we all try. I shall be using every forum that I have – speaking and writing – to put across my conviction. Forgive me, our conviction. I urge each of you to seize every opportunity you get to spread the word. We owe it to ourselves and to Jesus. In a way, informing and persuading others in our fraternity could be part of our mission. The task is huge, but the rewards are great. While we are busy propagating the new role of the professional, we should redefine what professionalism is. Qualifications, experience, skills, commitment and competence are important. In your discussions yesterday, you agreed that a professional should optimize the use of resources. The question is: How does he do it? So the means he adopts, to optimize the use of his resources, become vital. Therefore, the picture of the professional is incomplete without the finishing stroke of the brush. Unless he can put life into his relationships – by forging lasting and fulfilling relationships – his profile is incomplete and imperfect. When he has done that he is empowered. To us, professionalism will be the achieving of our goals through empowered professional relationships; living the Golden Rule. At Mount Pharmaceuticals we shall try to perfect our profiles. With constant effort we shall try to influence others to do likewise.” (Words of Victor  Banerjee, the CEO of Mount Pharmaceuticals)

“Original Storyline” – A Sibling in Always by Ernest Gordon Taulbee #IARTG #fiction @gordtaul

 a_sibling_in_always_cover_for_kindle

Title: A Sibling in Always

Author: Ernest Gordon Taulbee

Genre: Literary Fiction

Book Blurb:

When a severely deformed corpse lands on his embalming table, skilled mortician, Horace Carver is forced to confront his apathy towards life and the dark secrets hidden within himself, his family, and his hometown of Always, Indiana.

This engaging novel finds a depth that is often missing in many of today’s books. Laden with literary devices and allusions, including themes borrowed from ancient mythology, this book immerses itself into the broadened and modernizing Mid-Western culture of the late 1970’s to 2008, highlighting the prose with delicate harmonic overtones of the Near South.

The prose has the classic sensibilities with the poetic nuances and timing. It also uses tightly metered poetry that often serves as the reader’s guide while experiencing the novel.

Excerpt:

What am I to make of you?

The one to whom I will speak

The nature of your design

I am beside of myself

I ask, do you have a name?

Tell me how you want to look

This chance is perfect for me.

It is perfect for you too.

We must have a way to go.

How shall we proceed, my friend?

What will I turn you into?

Someone is hiding in there.

I want to know your true name.

These years you waited to die.

Could there have been anything,

Only madness in the dark.

Darkness is in this light too,

And there are things you may lose.

Did you ever hold something?

You have ever felt possessed,

Since those who are never do.

(Madness is on this side too.)

I keep saying it is not routine. Dying that is. But neither is living in most cases. People have such a thing as an average life. There is a median income for American families. People have two kids on average. They buy cars and go to movies. They get their teeth pulled when they get old and they buy their grandkids Christmas presents. I know all this. I have seen the family pictures adorning the funeral home. Plucked from mantels and tables from around homes and placed around the coffin in the viewing room. Smiling faces. Cooked turkeys and full bellies. Happy people. I have never had that life, but I know it to be real. I see it time and time again throughout the years. A couple funerals a week: that is what we average. More than enough to keep the home afloat.

My uncle doesn’t live at the funeral home like I do — me in an efficiency apartment in the back of the home. Now our new employee is living in the apartment above the garage. I don’t know if he is paying rent or if it was just something he and Seth agreed to, that way Seth could pay him less money. I have no idea. I don’t get into the business. I know my skill and I do it well. I like the challenge of it sometimes. But as violent and dismembering as it is, I am rarely shocked at what I see. I know that people die in violent ways, and that is where I make my mark. It eases people to see the violence removed.

But no violence tonight. None.

Sometimes I like to think my uncle and I have come to a place of forced mutual respect. We have never operated on a familial level. It is a façade and it took until I was at least thirty to develop, but it is in place now. It is necessary for us to work together as we do. One of the points is we respect each other’s privacy. I never invite him into my home. He does not invite me to his, though I have seen if from the outside; a few miles from the funeral home. Not flashy, but elaborate. He makes the money in the place. He has been married for years, but I have only met his wife a few times. She doesn’t consider me family.

Nonetheless, we respect our mutual privacy. That is our way now. I began living in my apartment when I was young, almost immediately after my mother was committed (we stayed in the apartment above the garage when we lived together). In my twenties it was nothing for Seth to barge in unannounced and uninvited as if he owned the place. In actuality he did own the place, but it was mine in my head. We fought and argued. I threatened to quit the business dozens of times. Now I have my privacy, but tonight my uncle broke it.

I had never bothered to have the locks changed, so the key that sat unused on his chain still worked after years of idleness. I was in a deep sleep when he entered, so I did not hear him come into my apartment. He came into my small bedroom, and he turned on the lights.
“Horace, wake up! I need you!” he says loudly, but not yelling.

I sprang to my feet: scared and disoriented.

“What the hell are you doing in here?”

“I need your help,” he says.

“Get the f**k out!” I demand, but he doesn’t move. That is odd for me. I rarely use profanity. I did when I was younger, but I accidentally used foul language in front of a customer, and Seth berated me for it. Since then, I have removed it from my language, only letting it out in moments of intense frustration, like now, with my uncle standing in my room unannounced in the middle of the night.

“It’s business, Horace, get dressed. We have to go to a house on Ingersoll Street. It’s urgent.”

“What happened?” I ask.

“There has been a death,” he answers.

“What’s urgent about that?”

“The benefactor. The one from the other day with the old man. He has a death in the family and he called me to say it is urgent. He said for me attend to it, and he said to bring you.”

“Why me?”

“I have no idea, Horace. I don’t even know how he is aware you exist. Now get dressed and meet me at the hearse.”

“Should I get Mason to drive us?”

“The man didn’t ask me to bring Mason, he asked me to bring you. You’re wasting time. Get dressed and meet me at the car. Five minutes.”

With that, he leaves and I go to my closet. This may be my first middle-of-the-night call, but I know jeans and t-shirt won’t be the appropriate attire. Thankfully, my time spent in the business has afforded me the ability to collect some black suits. I hurriedly dress and make my way to the hearse, still adjusting my tie as I approach.

gordon-taulbee

Author Biography:

Ernest Gordon Taulbee grew up in a small town in Eastern Kentucky called Salyersville. He received both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University. Upon completing his MA he moved to Louisville — where he has lived most of his adult life.

Love of reading and writing has been a theme in his life. Through the decade and a half since he finished his MA, Mr. Taulbee has worked a variety of jobs, from populating a cubicle in a large corporation to making and selling mead. Throughout his whole life, writing has remained his singular professional and artistic passion.

He enjoys writing that is both entertaining as well as writing that borders on high art.

The thesis for his MA was the first 100 pages of a novel. He would complete that novel in the months after finishing his graduate degree. After additional months spent proofreading and editing, he submitted the manuscript to small publishing houses and select agents who considered literary fiction. The stacks of rejections letters became less painful, when he received an email from a small, art house, stating they would like to publish this novel. That joy was squashed about a month or so later, when the publishing company informed him an unexpected financial situation would cause the publishing house to close.

He would continue to write short stories and outline for longer works over the next few years, until he was struck with the idea for what would become his novel, A Sibling in Always, while waiting for the bus.

Once the manuscript was complete, he continued to write prose and to submit the novel for consideration by small houses and publications.

After a year and a half, he decided to join the do-it-yourself culture that had influenced much of the books, music, and art he had come to admire.
He believes that art, including fiction, is a vital part of society, so — if you are not going to produce it — appreciate it and try to improve it.

He currently (as was stated previously) lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife, Tina, and their two daughter.

The Glass Eyed Monster

© A. L. Butcher

The monster reaches,

To tear the poison sky.

The poet’s wife

Weeps tears of blood within her grave

A prophecy of Promethean fire.

The monster’s glittering eyes, multifaceted

Reflecting an eternal desolation.

Creatures within the steel belly,

Slaves to the god of commerce,

In the service of the damned.

A foul concrete skin

Mocks the soul of the mother of creation

Hideous spires, like claws through Heaven.

A modern monster

Born of the hand of man.

Welcome Back to the Stone Age — He Runs: Part 1 by @OwenSethAuthor #books #amreading

He Runs Part One

Title – He Runs: Part One

Author – Owen Seth

Genre – Post Apocalyptic / Thriller

Book Blurb

With Mankind relegated to the Stone Age, one man struggles against the cruelty of the world that’s left behind. With many obstacles in his path, every day becomes a fight for survival…against the world and himself.
A psychological, apocalyptic thriller that keeps the reader guessing throughout, He Runs is raw and disturbing and unapologetically brutal.

Excerpt –

Man wanders.

Man explores.

Man runs.

And we find him at this point in his journey, with a dog. It’s a large dog, a black retriever cross, male, with long strands of hair intersecting fleshy areas of mange and a loosely-fitted muzzle engulfing the snout to protect both of them. Man drags the dog using a makeshift lead, fashioned from an electric cord that once hung loose from the back of a TV set. Man holds the cord in his hand, the brown wiring taught with canine strength, and can’t remember the last time he watched TV. He guesses that it was the same day that the lights went off. The same day that initiated the test for Mankind’s love and compassion.

And then broke it.

Excerpt:

I sunk into the water, and let the suds and scent of lavender engulf me.  The stress of the day finally began to melt away.

My body jolted.

I was in the middle of the desert. There were grass huts and women with hajjis walking quickly around me. Something whizzed past my ear, and a deafening explosion rocked me off my feet. I instinctively curled my body in a fetal position.

I listened for the screams to start, but it was eerily silent. I glanced around, but all I saw was water.

I was still in the bath. What had just happened? Was that a vision? Had I fallen asleep?

My headache was a dull thud now.

A knock on the washroom door made me gasp. I sat upright in the tub and heard my roommate call in, “Mary, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good. Just must have fallen asleep.”

“Amber, what time is it?” I looked down at my pruney fingers and wondered how long I was in the tub.

Amber said, “It’s five thirty.”

I leaned forward and turned on the hot water. The bath water had gotten cold while I had drifted off.

I leaned back as the warm water ran over my toes and closed my eyes, wondering what I should wear tonight. I wanted to look beautiful for Joe. I began to picture every outfit in my closet, and tried to imagine his reaction to it.

A shiver ran down my back and I faintly hear the water splash over the edge.

I opened my eyes and tried to scream. All that came out was a reverse gasp, and I pulled my towel in to cover my body.

A small child was in the tub with me. He couldn’t be older than five. Blood was running down his face, and his body was covered in sand mixed with congealing blood. He was clinging to my towel, and I didn’t know whether to let go of it or yank it back from him. His dark hair was wet with fresh blood. My heart filled with sadness and I quit trying to scream.

As I clung to my own towel, I didn’t know what was happening or what I should do.

The little boy raised his head and more sadness poured into my heart. His eyes were dark pools of grief and despair. They pleaded with me, begging me to help.

How? I mouthed silently.

I jumped when he began to move slowly toward me. He lifted one arm and spoke in a language I didn’t recognize. I didn’t know exactly what his words meant, but I understood what he was saying: He was hurt and needed help.

The closer he came, the more my fear eased and the pain increased. He reached for my arm. His hand was bloodied, and it sent a jolt of electricity and agony throughout my body. I tried to pull away, but his grip was locked on my arm. His eyes turned black and murky, and a voice not his own spoke.

“Princess, help my people,” it said.

I shook my head.

“Let go!” I tried to scream again.

The little boy disappeared, and I jumped out of the bathtub, wet towel still wrapped around my body, and crumbled to the floor. The blood was smeared all around me, and I looked at my arm. The blood was still there, too.

I whimpered, scrubbed at my arm until it was raw, and yet I could still see the blood.

New Beginnings by @_Iris_B Will Melt Your Heart #romance #books #MFRWAuthor

NB Banner

The story is set in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, the most southern state in Australia. A most beautiful place. I went there a few years back and imagined how it would be to live in this city, how to adapt as a “non-local”, and bit by bit I wrote the story of two sisters moving there.

Obviously, I added a little romance into the story as well – so I added Mark and Zach.

This is the second edition of NEW BEGINNINGS.

The story is now a bit sexier and has also received another edit.

Literary Chanteuse’s review: “This author has a way of endearing her characters and it is easy to fall in love with them. An intriguing story with emotion, love and hope.”

Sharon’s review: “This was a very enjoyable read and it left me wanting just a little bit more. I highly recommend it.”

“Other people have to fight battles in their life as well.”

♥♦♥  SYNOPSIS ♥♦♥

The chance to start life all over with the help of a stranger.

Twenty-two-year-old Sophie Levesque has been guardian to her eight-year-old sister Mia since their mother’s death a few years ago, and it hasn’t been easy. Luck comes their way when they inherit a small house in Hobart. Problem is, though, they don’t know and have never heard of Clara Bellinger, the testator. Settling into their new life, Sophie is still afraid it’s all a mistake.

Mark O’Connor, attorney in Hobart and the bearer of the good news for Sophie and Mia, curses himself for the lack of information about the testator. However, researching the questions gives him an opportunity to see Sophie again, and the more time he spends with the two, the more he realises that his life is missing something. And it’s not his casual lover Linda.

But then there’s Zach, Sophie’s sexy neighbour from across the road… and a very good friend of Clara’s.

Will unravelling the mystery unravel Sophie and Mark’s promise of a future?

♥♦♥ EXCERPT ♥♦♥

Sophie Levesque stared at the attorney in front of her, waiting for some answers. She and her little sister, Mia, had been quietly sitting in Mr. O’Connor’s office for more than half an hour, learning about the details of their inheritance.

Once he was finished, silence hung in the air before she asked with raised eyebrows. “Who?”

“Clara Catherine Bellinger.”

Mia leaned closer to her elder sister and gave a soft tug on Sophie’s shirt. “Who is she?”

Sophie shrugged. “I wouldn’t have a clue.” Then turned her attention back on Mr. O’Connor and asked the same thing. “Who is she?”

The handsome attorney on the other side of the massive desk leaned forward and rested his elbows on it before he started to repeat his earlier speech. Although hearing his words, Sophie still found it all very hard to comprehend. Here she was in this old office, furnished with heavy antique oak furniture, the curtains in a pretty shade of aubergine, and the carpet beneath her shoes thick and warm in a matching shade, hearing about an inheritance from someone she’d never even heard of.

Startled by the subtle sound of the clock chiming across the road, Sophie’s gaze turned to the window, where she saw the post office building across the road. It looked impressive and old. It’d been only a few hours since they’d arrived in Hobart, the most southern capital in Australia, but she already liked it. A lot more than Sydney, the place she’d lived all her life.

Hauled back from her thoughts, she heard Mr. O’Connor say, “I believe she was a distant relative of yours. I’m afraid I don’t have any further details.”

Sophie arched an eyebrow in disbelief, doubting the accuracy of it all. Not only did she try not to question his competence as a lawyer, but she also hoped it wasn’t a dreadful misunderstanding.

With a slight shrug of her shoulder, she asked, “Why not?”

He met her gaze steadily. “Pardon me?”

Sitting up straight, she repeated, “Why not? Why aren’t there any further details?”

He rubbed his chin with his fingers, his unease now obvious, and although she almost felt sorry for him, she tried not to care. She needed to know more. And not just the what, but why and who as well.

Only a week earlier, Sophie had received the call from Mr. O’Connor telling her about an inheritance. Initially, she’d thought it had been a horrible joke when he’d given her details on where to pick up airplane tickets to Hobart. It was important for her to come, he’d explained. Some legality she hadn’t understood. Something about her having to sign documents for the transfer of ownership of some assets. It’d sounded too farfetched at the start, but after some research on the firm with the help of a friend, it sounded valid, and she’d hoped her life was finally turning around for the better.

One Night in Laguna by @Melissa_Keir and You Can Win an E-Copy of Summer Heat! #romance

One Night in Laguna

Title: One Night in Laguna

Author: Melissa Keir

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Publisher: Amazon Kindle Worlds

Book Blurb:

Schoolteacher, Melanie Whitman’s dating life is in shambles when her boyfriend and former boss dumps her. Her best friend arranges for Master Draikoh San, matchmaker extraordinaire, to provide her with a night to remember.

Breakout star of the third season of the reality TV show Laguna Nights Cole Hayes was burned by the limelight and started a family. After a messy divorce and looking to move back into the dating scene, he agrees to a one-night stand.

Can Cole and Melanie create a relationship that will last a lifetime, or will their one-night stand crash in the waves of Laguna Beach?

Excerpt:

“Sure. A pop, please.”

Melanie watched Cole walk to the bar. His tight slacks outlined his backside, while his dark hair reminded her of a Greek god, with the short back and sides and a long layer on top. She longed to run her fingers through his hair. Each peek at the tanned skin of his neck had her biting her lip. Melanie hadn’t been this physically attracted to someone in a long time. Her reaction was spontaneous. Maybe Master Draikoh San knew what she needed. After all, she wasn’t looking for a happily ever after, only a happily for tonight.

Cole wasn’t what she’d pictured when she thought of a California guy. Board shorts and bleach-blond hair, scruffy beard, and dark tan. Nope. None of those applied to Cole. With his high-end slacks, broad shoulders, and short hair, he looked more like a Navy Seal than a beach bum. And while his hair was shorter than in his photograph, Melanie had no complaints about Cole in the looks department, but she’d learned to be cautious. Her ex had been good looking and charming, too…right up until he dumped her.

“Here’s your soda. They had Coke.” He placed the tall glass in front of her. “I hope that’s okay.”

“Sure. Although, if you asked my friend, Brandi, from Texas, the only pop is Dr. Pepper.” She raised the glass and took a sip. Bubbles tickled her nose as the cold drink washed down her throat.

Author Biography:

For my wedding in Vegas, my books and computer came with me but there wasn’t enough room for my wedding shoes. It’s all about priorities! As an avid reader, I was probably born with a book in hand. Luckily my mom was also an avid reader, so it was easy to “borrow” her books when my books were finished.

I was reading from an early age about dashing men on horseback riding to the rescue of strong willed and capable women who didn’t really need rescuing. I came to expect that women in fairy tales should have fought their own battles. When I was older, I found Margaret Atwood and realized that women could re-tell history in their own way and I experimented with changing those basic fairy tales.

Fortunately for me, my husband allows me the opportunity to be myself (spend my salary on books) and still takes care of the really important things for me like killing spiders and opening jars. As an elementary teacher, teaching children about the many worlds inside of books is a gift that I’m lucky enough to do for a living. Teaching the next generation to love reading is a lot of fun! Reading the right book can make a new world come alive!

Currently living in the suburbs of Ann Arbor, Michigan with my darling husband, way-too-grown-up children and spoiled dogs, I enjoy getting away through a book to escape the harsh winters or summer road construction.

I’d love to hear from you!

Skeleton Canyon 250x400

The Skeleton Canyon Treasure

by Kris Bock

Romantic Suspense

Camille Dagneau – beautiful, brilliant, and prickly – isn’t quick to trust, especially when a strange man has broken into her machine shop at night. But Ryan MacAllister insists he’s merely looking for his missing uncle, who has disappeared while hunting for a lost treasure. He believes Camie is the key to finding the treasure, and his uncle. Camie can ignore the attraction she feels, but she won’t pass up the chance for an adventure.

The pair set off with Camie’s feisty cat Tiger to track down the clues in the missing man’s journal. Graveyards, steep cliffs, and creepy caves don’t intimidate Camie, but she’ll need to trust Ryan to overcome all the challenges that stand in their way. A man’s life is on the line and time is running out, but her heart may be the one thing Camie is not willing to risk.

Join the fun! The Southwest Treasure Hunters novels include The Mad Monks Treasure and The Dead Mans Treasure. Each novel stands alone in this series mixing action and adventure with light romance.

Excerpt

Camie let herself into the darkened building, reveling in the silence. At 10 PM on a Friday, the engineering department was abandoned, exactly the way she liked it. A few hours of work without distractions and she’d get her invention running.

A faint light shone in the darkened hallway. The glow spilled through the small square of glass in her door, a warning beacon coming from inside her machine shop. She hesitated. Had she forgotten to turn off the light when she left for dinner? Plausible but unlikely. Slapping the light switch on the way out was habit, and she’d been extra careful since the break-in a few nights earlier.

A few other people had keys to the college machine shop, but the cleaning staff would be long gone, and her student interns spent Friday nights at the bar. Camie returned after hours to work on her own projects because inspiration required solitude. So why was her light on?

She crept forward, as silent as the sleeping building around her. The ten-inch window was cloudy with age and threaded with wire mesh, but it didn’t completely hide the sight within. A large man stood on the far side of the room, hunched over one of her workbenches. She didn’t recognize him. Easily several inches over six feet and a good 220 pounds of mostly muscle, he would stand out in any crowd. Among the young geniuses of a science and engineering college, he was a mountain lion among prairie dogs.

Her eyes narrowed and she gave a low growl. What was he doing here, in her machine shop, messing with her equipment? He had to be connected to the earlier theft. Why would he come back when he already had her invention? He couldn’t know she’d already started rebuilding it. Maybe he wanted to steal her notes and the provisional patent application forms. Without them, she’d have a much harder time proving she’d been the original inventor.

She considered her options, calling campus security or the police being the most obvious. Campus security would be faster, but the police would have guns. Problem was, she’d left her phone inside the machine shop. She’d have to leave to find another phone, and he might escape in the meantime, with her notes, and the new version of her device. She didn’t trust the authorities to track him down once he got out of the building. More likely they’d take a report and do nothing. And she did not want to start over from scratch yet again.

And then the man actually reached out and picked up her baby, her new version of the invention, only partway rebuilt. All thought of options and smart choices vanished.

She barreled through the door.

Excerpt:

The mansion squat on the shore of Indian Creek Island like a well-fed whore, its lights a sparkling diadem in the south Florida night.

A movie executive who’d ruled Hollywood back in the eighties built Casa Torres, more a castle than a house. The mansion was presently owned by one Enrico Motosierra Torres, the head of an up-and-coming Mexican drug cartel. He’d received the nickname, Motosierra, from his penchant for using a chainsaw to cut body parts off competitors, disobedient workers… anyone and everyone who pissed him off.

Mexican drug lords were notorious for their violence and Moto’s goal was to be the most sadistic of them all. “Respect is good,” he was fond of saying, “but to be feared… that is best.”

Two Bentleys, several Rolls-Royce Phantoms, a few Jaguars, and even a Ferrari was lined up in the long, cobblestone drive waiting for parking attendants to tuck them safely away. King Palm trees, rising like majestic pillars into the tropical night, were carefully scattered over the manicured grounds while a large circular fountain shot a full dozen jets of water into the night air. The liquid torrent was drowned out by high energy dance music spilling out of the mansion. Even here in Miami where excess was the norm, Moto’s parties were legendary.

Like pilgrims traveling to Mecca, guests lined the stairs, waiting to enter the mansion. A man and a woman climbed from the black Ferrari and mounted the stairs leading to the entrance, which was impressive with its huge double doors made from exotic jungle woods, leaded glass and wrought iron.

He was a Viking of a man, standing six feet six inches and rigged out in all black. His midnight hair flowed artlessly about his shoulders and a touch of kohl lined his eyes, emphasizing their steel gray color. His lean face, with its trademark three-day beard, was striking. A thin white scar running from temple to jaw gave him an air of danger guaranteeing second and third looks from both women and men.

The man placed a wide palm on the small of his companion’s back—a pretty young woman whose athletic figure was perfectly displayed in a royal blue short jumpsuit with six-inch silver knee-length gladiator sandals circling shapely calves.

Together they reached the top of the stairs and played follow-the-leader behind the other guests until they stood at the doorway where a three-man security detail waited.

Guard Number One frisked the guests, taking his time with the women to inspect inside their bodices and between their legs while Guard Number Two wielded a hand held metal detector. Guard Number Three stood a short distance away, holding an automatic rifle at the ready.

When it was the couple’s turn, Guard Two carefully waved the metal detector over the man while Mr. Grab Happy went to work on the pretty redhead. The big man growled a protest and moved closer when Guard One slid his hands inside her shorts.

“Stand down, esse,” Guard Three commanded, snapping his rifle up and shoving the barrel into the big man’s chest.

“Hands off, esse,” the big man countered and in a sudden move, snatched the rifle and pointed it at the trio. “I said hands off.” The men glared at each other for a tense moment.

“It’s okay,” the woman said, tugging on the big man’s arm. “Jesus, I need a drink. Can’t we just go inside? Does everything have to be so difficult?”

The guard who’d held the rifle laughed, said something in Spanish and the other two joined him. Grinning, the big man shrugged and handed him back the weapon.

“You’re clean. Go in,” Guard Three said, waving them on with the rifle.

The woman threaded her fingers through her date’s and tugged him past the entrance onto a floor made of glossy white Italian marble.  A giant chandelier, with a thousand glittering crystal pendalogues, dominated the great room.

What part of do not engage don’t you understand, Dark Man? The handler snarled in the hunter’s headset.

“I was just staying in character, base,” DM murmured, his hand at the small of Elle’s back. “Moto’s crew would be suspicious if I didn’t challenge them.” Which was true, but even if it wasn’t, he’d be damned if he’d stand by and watch the son of a bitch hand rape Elle.

“I think he deserves a Golden Globe,” she added, tossing a grateful glance over her shoulder, her heels clicking on the shiny stone. They paused at the balcony and looked out on the massive room beneath them.

Sweeping twin staircases followed the curved walls leading down to a ground level great room a full acre in size. Priceless artwork covered the walls broken up by curtained alcoves scattered throughout the room. A club sized dance floor, teaming with people, was in the center of the room complete with DJ booth and a laser light show shooting sparkles across the walls. The bass heavy electronic music made the balustrade DM’s hand rested on throb in time to the beat. Further back, the great room’s glass rear walls had been retracted. Opening onto the tropical night, both music and dancers spilled outside to the Olympic sized pool. The rear of the estate ended at the gulf. DM noted several luxury yachts parked at Moto’s dock. He also noticed most of the guests milling about the pool were naked.

DM plucked a champagne flute from the tray held by a waiter and offered it to Elle.

“I see one, two… make that three of Moto’s lieutenants and several representatives of the Columbian growers’ conglomerate,” Elle whispered through the link, the glass masking her mouth.

The security detail scattered so obviously around the mansion and grounds weren’t the real danger. High powered cameras with the ability to zoom in and count the hairs on a flea’s back were. Not to mention the lip-reading software now standard in most high level systems.

Have you located the target?

“He’s at the foot of the stairs, greeting guests,” DM said, dropping a kiss on Elle’s shoulder.

That was a bit of luck there. With a little more they could get the job done and be away well under the allotted time.

Proceed, the handler said.

DM followed Elle, his eyes sweeping the room, searching out the nooks, looking for enemies and cameras, but the laser lighting and the crushing crowd made it difficult. Instead he focused on the welcoming committee.

Moto had two bodyguards flanking him. One shifted and DM saw the glint of his pistol in the shoulder holster beneath his tuxedo jacket. Both men had the hard countenances and shifting gazes that bespoke serious training. For once, it was nice to see the briefing for this job had been on target, he thought sourly. Bad intelligence made his job harder. Not impossible, just harder. Tonight, he’d like easy.

Author Biography:

I’m an odd mixture of one-part dreamer, one-part realist, and two parts stubborn–which can be a positive thing if you’re a writer. Not content to write in just one genre, I write dark paranormal romance, time travel, light science fiction, romantic comedy, and gritty romantic thrillers. Told you I was stubborn (that and a little crazy!). Besides, doing the same thing day after day can become boring and we can do with a little less boring, right?

Excerpt:

The water rushes over my head. I’m sinking and don’t know why. With my breath held, I have trouble stopping the air from escaping since the pressure drives the air up and out. I try to keep my mouth closed, but the water pressure pushes the air out more and more. Will I pass out? In the distance, the light is dim. To rise to the surface in time might not be possible─ I need to breathe right now. Toward ending the pain in my chest, my rambling mind rationalizes taking a deep breath—even knowing it will end my life. In conflict with the irrational thought of ending it, my body won’t let me suck in the water, as it fights to retain the little bit of oxygen left to fuel my brain.

The despair is nearly overwhelming, and my mind considers other ways to battle the feeling. What more could I have done with my life? The pressure becomes more intense, and I’m about to lose it all, and I decide I’ve lived the way I wanted and have no regrets. I close my eyes and hear only the roar of the sea. I’m so tired. Exhausted. Sleep will fix everything, and I want to give in.

Vengeance is Mine by Kat Henry Doran #romance #MFRWAuthor

KatHenryDoran_VengeanceisMine800

Vengeance Is Mine, a contemporary romantic trilogy, self-published by Kat Henry Doran

Blurb:

Ever think about going back to study hall to face down the school bully?

The mean girls?

The brainless jocks who made your life a pure misery?

For Dru Horvath, gypsy orphan turned Pulitzer Prize winning photo-journalist; Rafe Archangeli, Scourge of Summerville who now heads a multi-million dollar trust; and Fiona “Fat Aggie” Thorpe who recreated herself into an A-list model with her own A-list agency, the opportunity to exact revenge is too good to pass up.

Will they find the vengeance they crave?

Or something more valuable?

Excerpt:

“Tough way to find out about the other woman.”

“Other woman, hell,” Dru groused. “The assistant was some young stud from Tommy’s gym with abs to die for.”

With that. she side-stepped him and reached for the knob on the bathroom door.

Fast on his feet, Rory’s counter move brought them nose to nose. “Play much poker, Horvath?”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Before you started trash talking the cheating ex-husband, your face lit up like the Fourth of July. That tells me you’ve got something stashed in the tote. Until you let me look inside, it stays out here.”

Clutching the canvas tote to her chest, she sneered, “The only thing in here is my outfit for tonight’s event. If you think I’d go naked, one of us is a couple fries short of a happy meal.”

His response came in the form of another gimme motion with those thick, blunt fingers. “How about I close my eyes if I encounter any lacy unmentionables?”

“As if.”

She knew the instant he found the back-up phone. The screw-you look morphed into a smirk. “It’s not smart to mess with Homeland Security, sweetie. Those guys eat small rodents for breakfast.”

Raven’s Peak by Award-Winning Author @LincolnjCole is Brilliant! #bookreview #paranormal

Now she’s forced to protect him, which is easy, but also to trust him if she wants to save the townsfolk of Raven’s Peak. My Review:

There’s a new demon slayer on the loose and she reminds me of Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer but on steroids.

Residents of Raven’s Peak are acting strange and the Council asks Frieda to send a hunter to investigate. She calls on the only one she knows who can handle it: Abigail.

The Council has Abigail on a short leash, thanks to her being possessed by a demon more than six months ago.  But she’s determined to prove her dark past is behind her, at least that’s what she’s telling Frieda. Internally, though, she’s burning with guilt over the death of her mentor and former hunter (Reverend in the Prologue). She’s told to drop her investigation or else face the consequences. But she can’t, especially when she’s forced to protect Haatim (son of a powerful Council member) from those trying to execute him.

Now, the two of them are on their way to the small town of Raven’s Peak. Haatim is getting a crash course in his family heritage and all things paranormal. It’s a fight to the death and Abigail may have walked them into a trap. Can she survive and save the innocent people of Raven’s Peak or is she destined to forfeit her life like her mentor, the Reverend?

Some readers think the demon slayer genre is passé but Raven’s Peak is not your ordinary slayer story. Filled with high octane fight scenes, conflicted tortured characters and an original paranormal plot. Cole blurs the lines between good and evil, as evidenced by the Prologue. From the first page, I was drawn in and can’t wait for the next book in the series.

If you’re a fan of paranormal and are looking for an intense, pulse-pounding read, pick up this gem today! I can see why the story was a Kindle Scout winner.

Favorite Character:

Abigail. I loved everything about her from her dry humor to her ability to kick demon ass. She reminds me of Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, only better. She’s a tortured soul, with a lot to atone for and so much to prove, yet that’s what draws my empathy to her. I mean, aren’t we all like Abigail: talented galore who’s made many mistakes and trying to make amends?

Favorite Quote:

“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.”
