The Road to Armegeddon

Title: The Road to Armageddon

Author: Clabe Polk

Genre: Christian Fiction, Christian Science Fiction, Futuristic

Book Blurb:

“THE BISHOP FAMILY: WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE FOR INSURRECTION AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT” reads the poster spread far and wide by International Financial Services.

Mark Bishop is a family man with a wife, a teen-aged son and too much month left when the money runs out. He needs financial resources. International Financial Services (IFS) can offer him those resources, but there’s a catch.

Ken Clifford, IFS manager for the Americas, has a psychological obsession. It doesn’t matter what he has to do or who he has to hurt, he will control his domain. Clifford loathes people like Mark Bishop who defy his authority.

Ken Clifford’s boss, Gerhardt Schmidt (the Antichrist), known in financial circles as “The Cardinal”, is CEO of IFS. Schmidt is commanded by Satan, “The Serpent”, whose mission is control of every human being on Earth. The supply of every conceivable essential resource is rationed by IFS.

Impossible? Mark Bishop thought so.

Now, Mark and his family are prey. Homeless and hungry, they are caught in the world-wide struggle of good versus evil leading to the Battle of Armageddon. Can they, or any human, survive treachery, hostility, slavery, natural disasters, disease, and starvation?

Will Clifford successfully take the Bishop family ‘dead or alive’ to satisfy his ego and ensure obedience at any cost?

My Review:

It’s the end of the world. No, really it is. The end of the world is here, complete with the Antichrist running the International Financial Services and wreaking havoc on everyone, including Mark and his family.

Mark is like the rest of us, short on cash and it’s not even the end of the month. He needs money fast, so he decides to take an opportunity at IFS. It seems too good to be true but when he discovers who’s behind IFS suddenly his life and family’s lives are in danger. There’s a bounty on their head and they must flee with the clothes on their back. With the end of days close at hand, everything becomes a battle of good versus evil, from natural disasters to imprisonment, and Mark is left with a choice most terrifying. When all is stripped away, what truly matters and would you be willing to die for it?

Not since reading the Left Behind series, have I read such a realistic fictionalized account of the Book of Revelations. Polk has a natural ability to draw the reader into his world through descriptive narration and world building. But it’s the characters that sold me on this book. They’re the straw that stirs the drink, so to speak, and I was hooked from the beginning.

If you’re not into Christian fiction, please give this a try. You won’t find any preaching here, just an imaginative story about the end of days. There’s a lot of intrigue and action to pump any reader’s pulse. I love how events happen that I wasn’t expecting, too. Another kudos to Polk’s ability as an author. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: Ken Clifford. I know, I know, he’s a bad guy but he’s so well-crafted and deliciously evil. I got excited every time it came to his scenes and POV.

Fans of #BreakingBad Will Love The Adventures of Harry Morgan by @ClabePolk #bookreview

The Adventures of Harry Morgan

Title: The Adventures of Harry Morgan, Volume 1

Author: Clabe Polk

Genre: Crime Adventure, Short Stories, Crime Fiction

Book Blurb:

A collection of three fast-paced crime action novellas featuring an active adventurous retiree, Harry Morgan, a magnet that attracts trouble everywhere he goes. A retired businessman living in St. Petersburg, Florida, Harry owns a sailboat. His friends and long-suffering wife, Jean, have given up trying to keep him out of disasters, but invariably they are also sucked into the story and endure whatever adventure Harry is into until the end.

The three novellas are:

Collegial Conspiracy: An old friend, dying of cancer, asks Harry to help him rob a bank…like Bonnie and Clyde would do it. Against his own better judgment, Harry risks everything – his life, his liberty, even his marriage – to keep a promise to his old friend. And then things really start to get complicated when his friend’s son, Tony, gets involved.

Emilio: What drove Tony to robbery . . . or worse? A drug-addicted college girl and her boyfriend seem to have committed suicide. But did they? What if it was more than that? What if it was murder? Tony is on the hot-seat for manslaughter and blackmail. Harry finds himself playing detective, smack dab in the middle of an investigation that rubs up against the bank robbery he committed and is working so hard to forget. Can he solve the mystery and get away clean?

The Pirates of Cayo Pelau: Harry’s heard all the stories of modern-day pirates along the Florida coast, but that’s never slowed him down. As he teaches his friends to sail in his new boat, he expects mosquitoes and sand gnats . . . but he never expected to stumble onto a slave ring. Now he has to free the captives, put the slave smugglers out of business, and rescue his friends…before it’s too late.

My Review:

A book by one of my favorite authors whose work I cannot wait to get my hands on.  His detective series is one of the best currently being penned.  As to the book at hand, it stands out as a very well written darkly-themed tome.

Although well penned, I personally found the basis for the first two thirds of the book to be extremely depressing.  This is not to say this book will not appeal to a wide variety of people.  Fans of the show Breaking Bad or even The Sopranos would devour this book.

I found, in the end, the only truly redeemable characters were Jean and Amanda.

If you think your life is bad, you should read this book to get some perspective.

The character of Tony is well crafted.  Rarely do I so deeply hate a character as I do this ‘person’.  Tony is beyond nonredeemable and there could have been no ending for this character that would have upset me except him getting away with the destruction he caused.

This was a challenging read that keeps the pages turning as you are drawn into the lives lead that are just ‘this’ side of the law.  A solid and timely read that I recommend to anyone.

FBRUP NYE

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. This is the last Friday Book Round-Up of the year and boy, has it been a fantastic year! We’ve read more than 1200 books this year, some good, some bad but all interesting. As we look forward to 2018, both MR N and I put together this little list of Books We’re Looking Forward to Reading in 2018. Have a peek and let us know the books you’re looking forward to reading in 2018. It’s going to be a very good year!

The Stronghold by Sebastian Bendix  (Author)

18-year-old Bowie is the envy of his peers; the sharpest eye with a rifle, deadly as a viper in hand-to-hand combat, and set to marry the prettiest girl around. Papa Byrne, leader of the Fort Thunder militia, has high hopes for this rising star, sees him as the heir apparent to their Pacific Northwest island stronghold.

That all changes when a plane crashes into the island. Its sole survivor is Alexis, an exotic young woman who looks nothing like the fair-skinned people back at the Fort. Bowie brings her back to the stronghold, throwing the fearful community into chaos. Even his parents worry about what this will mean…

All fears are confirmed when an impromptu mission leaves a young cadet dead and Bowie wounded. Worse still, Bowie is being blamed for the death, framed by his former mentor and banished by a hung jury. The once favored son of Fort Thunder is about to have his eyes opened to the larger world – if he can live long enough to see it.

In Deep (Emerald Mountain Book 2) by Stacy Gold  (Author)

Sophie Tremore is trying to build a career in the male-dominated world of Ski Patrol. Hard to do when her new boss is her smokin’ hot ex-lover. She hasn’t forgotten how he made her body tingle and her heart pound, although he’s making it a lot easier by treating her like she’s incompetent—when he’s not ignoring her existence altogether.

Emerald Mountain Ski Patrol Director Max Demford has been doing his best to avoid working with his feisty former flame, given his judgment is clouded by those eight mind-blowing weeks two years ago. Ski patrol is dangerous enough, and no way could he handle another person he cares about getting hurt on the mountain.

Forced to work together, their simmering attraction becomes difficult to ignore. When Sophie gets caught in a slide, an adrenaline-filled day could turn into a spectacular night they will never forget—one that could risk both their careers.

Haunted by Shari Nichols  (Author)

When medium Karly Matthews agrees to move into a haunted inn, she’s not sure what’s more dangerous, the ghost or the sexy innkeeper she tries to resist. She can’t deny the intense rush of desire she feels every time he’s near. When she agrees to embark on a no-strings-attached relationship, she finds herself thrust into a world of mind-blowing pleasures. Now she must face the aching truths of her past.

Hotel heir Thayne Harper has a laser-like focus on success that doesn’t include the help of his family. He’s always been the black sheep, living in the shadow of his dead brother. His dreams are put to the test when a supernatural entity threatens to ruin everything. The one bright spot is the woman who intrigues his mind and heats his blood. If only he can convince her that, despite his bad-boy ways, he can change for the good. Her love becomes his only salvation. Passion burns white-hot as a dark threat looms. The ghost doesn’t want them to be together and sets her sights on Thayne, luring him to a place that goes beyond death. Will Karly be able to save him before it’s too late?

Searching for Gertrude by D.E. Haggerty  (Author)

When the first antisemitic laws are enacted by the Nazi government, Gertrude’s father loses his job at the local university. Unable to find employment in Germany, he accepts a position at Istanbul University and moves the family to Turkey. Rudolf, desperate to follow Gertrude, takes a position working at the consulate in Istanbul with the very government which caused her exile. With Rudolf finally living in the same city as Gertrude, their reunion should be inevitable, but he can’t find her. During his search for Gertrude, he stumbles upon Rosalyn, an American Jew working as a nanny in the city. Upon hearing his heartbreaking story, she immediately agrees to help him search for his lost love. Willing to do anything in their search for Gertrude, they agree to work for a British intelligence officer who promises his assistance, but his demands endanger Rudolf and Rosalyn. As the danger increases and the search for Gertrude stretches on, Rudolf and Rosalyn grow close, but Rudolf gave his heart away long ago.

How far would you go to find the woman you love?

The Bishop’s Legacy (World of Shadows Book 3) by Lincoln Cole  (Author)

Everything is falling apart for Niccolo Paladina as his mistakes come back to haunt him. He’s been reminded once more that the shadowy world in which Arthur inhabits is not his own.

He is ready to face the consequences for his actions, but not until he has dealt with the threat he’s helped to create. Things are getting desperate, though, and they are worried that more people will be hurt before they can bring things to an end.

“Wow! A Must Read.” Angelica by @ClabePolk #CrimeFiction #bookreview #Suspense

angelica-24

Title: Angelica (The Detective Mike Eiser Series Book 2)

Author: Clabe Polk

Genre: Mystery, Suspense

Book Blurb:

A long time ago, Angelica Vicetti did some very bad things with some very bad men. Now she’s built a new life for her family, far from Las Vegas.

Now it’s all about to come crashing down.

Angelica Vicetti of Las Vegas has become Angela Cassetta of Poplar Bluffs, just outside Atlanta, Georgia. She’s built a successful real estate agency, and the son she rescued from Vegas when he was a youngster is now a high school baseball star and destined for great things.

But the mob bosses in Vegas who forced her underground haven’t forgotten about her. A string of hit men come to town to kill her, but each time she saves herself and her son, with the help of her friends and Mike Eiser, a local Sheriff’s detective who has seen far worse.

Then things get even more complicated, when one of the hit men changes his mind and becomes strangely important to Angela in a whole new way… and a team of Federal agents come to town and ratchet up the odds. Suddenly, sleepy little Poplar Bluffs is awash in blood.

Angelica will have to take it all the way to the edge and beyond – into murder, kidnapping, and lying to the Feds – to save herself and her son. But… can she survive the fight for her family’s freedom?

My Review:

Wow.  A MUST READ. What a fantastic story this is.

I have to say that a small town like Poplar Bluffs faces the most crime a small town has seen since Jessica Fletcher lived in Cabot Cove.

I loved the story of Angelica and her family and just LOVED how every group of bads moved in, tried something and were dealt with in superb fashion.  The growing relationship between Danny and Angela was beautiful.

The best line of the book has to be, ‘What happens in the kitchen, stays in the kitchen.’

It became so funny how every type of bad guy/cop/etc. ended up eating at Bertie’s.

A fantastic book that I loved every second of and am sorry it ended because I can’t wait to read it again.

If you are only going to read one Detective Eiser book, make it this one. It is the greatest and a fun read.

I would give it 1,000,000 stars but must settle for 5+

Schism (The Detective Mike Eiser Series Book 1) by @ClabePolk #BookReview! #suspense #FridayReads

Schism

Title: Schism (The Detective Mike Eiser Series Book 1)

Author: Clabe Polk

Genre: Detective Mystery, Suspense

Book Blurb:

Atlanta’s infamous Bowen Homes Projects is no place for children, especially two teenaged boys. If anyone knows, it’s Kat Thomas. The single mom has seen enough senseless death and broken dreams to last a lifetime, and she is seeking a different future in Poplar Bluffs.

But dark shadows fall on even the brightest futures.
“Mad Dog” Lincoln lives up to his name every day on the streets; never more so than the time he killed Kat’s fiancé to leave her broke, pregnant, and alone. Now, the Dog is demanding one of her sons as the newest recruit for his gang, the Raven’s Claws.

Kat is desperate to save her family from a life of crime, but a single mother is no match for a raging criminal like Mad Dog, whom even the police avoid. All but one, that is: Detective Mike Eiser. Determined to end Lincoln’s reign of terror once and for all, Eiser will soon discover that ruining Lincoln’s plans might just turn a mad dog rabid.

My Review:

This was a long read and but one that kept the reader interested.  The plot seemed centered on the thug and it kinda surprised this reader to realize it was a book about a police detective.  For a good part of the book, Det. Eisner was nowhere to be found.  The character of MD seemed indestructible and that wore on me after awhile.  I would have had a certain gun aimed three feet higher for a more permanent solution.  The book turned out to be a modern day urban version of a Mike Hammer mystery.

I think fans of old fashioned film noire detective movies and books will love this book.  It’s a page turner that keeps a reader on the edge of their seat.

A four-star work because the plot arc of MD’s focus on one family wasn’t really well defined.  Ran on a bit but the great action scenes did allay that somewhat.  A worthy addition to the annals of great detective novels.
