Title: Fat Girl Begone!

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Romantic Comedy, Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

I’m a total mess. My boyfriend dumped me – get this – because I diet too much. Not because I’m fat, mind you. Of course, this spurs me into the diet-fitness-revenge-plan of the century, which leads me to the gym and a scorching hot personal trainer. I even manage to make some cool new friends, including a millionaire if you can believe it. Things are looking up! Naturally, that’s the moment my ex decides he wants me back, the personal trainer asks me out, and my millionaire male buddy decides to throw his hat in the ring. But that’s not enough drama. No, not for me. Because I’ve also lost my job and decided to start my own business. Just call me Ms. Drama.

Warning: Bad language, bumpy roads, and embarrassing moments ahead. But there’s also more than a bit of romance and even, if we’re lucky, love. Fingers crossed.

Not endorsed by or affiliated with any brand of tequila.

Excerpt:

Carter is changed into street clothes by the time I join him at the entrance to the gym. He’s wearing jeans with more holes than material and a Star Wars t-shirt with a picture of a storm trooper and the words ‘Chicks dig the uniform’ printed underneath.

“In case anyone was confused about whether you’re a geek or not?” I raise an eyebrow at him as I try not to laugh out loud. Or at least not too loud.

He shrugs. “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

“Okay. A well-rounded geek who can quote Oscar Wilde.”

“That’s Oscar Wilde?” He winks. “Come on. There’s a little bar next door.”

We quickly walk to the bar where I am obviously not the only person enjoying the pleasure of athleisure apparel. “Someone took the whole location, location, location advice and ran with it.” The place is the standard model of a sports bar except it’s not full of men getting off work and catching a game on the big screen. Nope. The place is packed with people telling themselves that the calories in the beer don’t count if they worked out first. At least that’s what I plan on telling myself.

Carter puts his hand on the small of my back and gently leads me to a small high table to the side of the bar. “Tequila?”

I shake my head. “Not unless you want to find out if this high table can support my weight when I decide to dance on it.”

He looks under the table and studies the joints. “Looks like it can take it.”

“Are you an engineer as well as Star Wars aficionado?”

He shrugs. “Does software engineer count?” I ignore his question and ask for a beer.

“So,” Carter starts as he sets down two extra-large frosty mugs of beer. “What’s going on?”

I shrug and take a long pull on my beer. “It’s just been a really tough week.”

“You looked pretty happy when you finished with your personal trainer on Wednesday.” Is that a jealous tone I detect? I study Carter’s face, but he keeps his expression neutral as he takes a drink from his mug.

“Just some issues at work.”

“Anything I can help with?”

I bark out a laugh. “Not unless you have $150,000 you can part with.”

“I can loan you the money if you like.” He says the words as if it’s no big deal to have access to that kind of money. Who is this guy?

“Do you really have that kind of money?” I slap my hand over my mouth when I realize what I just asked. “Forget I said that. I’m sorry.”

Carter shrugs. “I’m not. It’s no secret that I have some money. If you need it, all you have to do is ask.”

I lean forward and study his face for signs he’s pulling my leg. “Oh my god, you’re not kidding. You do have the money.”

He raises an eyebrow at me. “You really don’t know who I am?”

Is that some kind of trick question? “You’re Carter.” I point to his t-shirt. “Lover of Star Wars. I’m still in suspense about whether you love Star Trek as well.”

“You’ll just have to wait to find out.” He winks before leaning back. He stares at me and remains quiet for longer than is comfortable. Finally, he shrugs. “You may have heard of my company. Carter Enterprises.”

“So, you do love Star Trek!”

Author Biography:

I grew-up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. But being a lawyer really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out being a B&B owner wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before deciding to follow the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.

Fat Girl Begone! is my eleventh book.

Title: Bring Your Own Baker

Book Series: Death by Cupcake, Book 2

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Humor, Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

Anna just wants to earn enough money on the side to buy into the bakery, Callie’s Cakes, where she works together with her best nerd pal Callie. The last thing she expects to see when she walks into Arthur’s apartment to do some moonlighting is a blood bath. Callie’s ready to jump into the investigation into Arthur’s murder, and she’s bringing another bakery worker, Kristie, into their hijinks whether Kristie wants to or not. But things aren’t as they seem. There are gang affiliations, illegal gambling dens, and ladies of the night to wade through. Will Anna and Callie discover who murdered Arthur or will Callie’s detective boyfriend and Anna’s self-appointed protector put a stop to such aspirations?

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu, but make sure to bring your own baker, because Anna’s a bit preoccupied at the moment.

Warning: This is NOT your mom’s cozy mystery. Bring Your Own Baker may be a ‘clean’ read, but if gangs, illegal gambling, and pimps make you turn your nose up at your e-reader, you might want to skip this one. Although you’ll be missing some sizzling chemistry between Anna and her protector. Not to mention a whole bunch of witty dialogue.

My Review:

Looking for a sassy cozy mystery with a healthy dose of swoon-worthy moments? This is it!

Anna, the pixie sidekick of Callie (Death by Cupcake, book 1), wants to buy into Callie’s Cakes and she’s almost made enough money moonlighting as an accountant for her buddy, Arthur. But before you can say buttercream frosting, Anna walks into Arthur’s brutal murder. So. Much. Blood. The goofy, inept police detectives suspect her (of course they do) for the crime. Are they serious? Anna is a pixie in every way from her five-foot frame to her pink hair. There’s no way she did it but little does she know, she’s in more danger than she could ever possibly imagine.

Cue bad-boy music…

A tall, dark stranger breaks into Anna’s apartment, only he’s there to protect her. He’s got the tats of one of the most ruthless gangs, Angel Band, and Anna’s blood pressure just spiked higher than her crème brulee blow torch. She doesn’t know what to make of him but she can’t deny the way he makes me melt like chocolate ganache.

Anna needs to find Arthur’s murderer and she enlists the help of Callie, Kristie and even Ben (Callie’s boyfriend). The more they dig, the more they discover nerdy Arthur is not who he appears again. Then there’s the way Anna’s protector swoops in to rescue her at just the right moment. Can Anna find justice for Arthur or will she back herself into a corner she can’t talk her way out of.

A brilliant cozy mystery slash romantic comedy by Haggerty! Anna comes alive off the page and I found myself laughing at her antics. Then there’s her bad-boy protector. I swooned more than once and sparks fly between him and Anna. The plot moves at a super-fast pace, I was able to keep up with all that’s going on.

I can’t wait for more! Bring Your Own Baker has everything you love in a cozy mystery: witty dialogue, overly excited amateur detectives (Callie and Anna), baking, romance, great one-liners and a murder to solve. Did I mention baking? There’s even a fantastic recipe after the epilogue. This is a must-read!

Favorite Character:

Anna. She’s my alter-ego, I swear. Hot on a trail of her friend’s killer, she stands up to gangsters, pimps and a den of catty prostitutes. She may be a pixie but she’s got guts the size of the Grand Canyon. Oh, and I adored the way she compares her yummy bad-boy protector to various baker items (chocolate ganache, frosting, whipped cream, crème brulee, etc.). I’d love to see her in another book. I loved her POV!

Favorite Quote:

Logan’s grin is wicked. “I always thought Tinker Bell was hot.”

I huff. “Tinker Bell’s a fairy, not a pixie.”

In any way. But wherever Savannah turns, there he is, and making no bones about what he wants from her.

Although you’ll be missing some sizzling chemistry between Anna and her protector. Not to mention a whole bunch of witty dialogue.

Excerpt:

“Apparently, I’m smart and could take over Arthur’s ‘position’. Oh, and I’m beautiful.” I snort again because really? The bookie must be in dire need of someone to play poker for him if he’s calling me beautiful.

“You are beautiful,” Logan whispers. Before I can snort again, he places a hand over my nose and mouth. “Baby, how can you not know you’re beautiful?”

My eyes widen at his question. “You’re serious?” At his nod, I continue. “Because I’m a pink-haired pixie. No one thinks a pixie’s beautiful.”

Logan’s grin is wicked. “I always thought Tinker Bell was hot.”

I huff. “Tinker Bell’s a fairy, not a pixie.”

“Pixie, fairy, whatever.” He shrugs. “Hot,” he mumbles as his lips find mine. He wastes no time in sticking his tongue down my throat but then abruptly stops. He licks his lips. “Have you been drinking?”

“Vodka.” I nod.

“Vodka doesn’t taste like coconut.”

“It does if it comes out of my freezer,” I tell him with no uncertainty.

He rolls his eyes at me. “You’re a nut.”

“Technically coconut is a fruit, not a nut,” I clarify.

Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.

Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker by @DenaEHaggerty is a 5+ Star Gem #bookreview #books

NTaSCB

Title: Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker (Death by Cupcake Book 1)

Author: D.E. Haggerty

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

A mystery with a heap of laughs, a generous portion of romance, and just a smidgeon of suspense.

Callie’s life is rather awesome. She owns a successful bakery and teaches German literature at the local university. There’s just one tiny problem. She has no self-confidence when it comes to her body. And then there’s the little matter of her being accused of murdering her pole dancing instructor. There’s no way Callie’s going to risk losing her teaching position and thus she embarks, with her best baker bud Anna, on a journey to discover the real killer. Between stripper auditions and a detective who insists Callie is the woman of his dreams, it’s a roller coaster adventure. Cupcakes not included.

My Review: D. E. Haggerty is back with a brand new cozy mystery series and she had me with her title. I mean, what woman wouldn’t read a book titled, Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker?

Callie is the best thing since Bridget Jones. She’s a cupcake baker/bakery owner by day and a part time German literature professor in her spare time. She runs the bakery with her best friend, Anna, and tries not to drool every time Detective Hottie (Ben) asks her out. See, Callie doesn’t believe Ben when he says she’s the woman of his dreams because she has trouble seeing her body in a healthy way (totally can relate).

Anna, in her role as pixie best friend, enrolls the two of them for pole-dancing classes. Callie agrees (like she has a choice) but when the pole-dancing instructor is a catty b*tch, Callie complains to the gym’s manager. Everyone in the class hears about it and when the pole-dancing instructor is found poisoned by a cupcake, guess who’s the prime suspect?

Ben convinces Callie to go on a date and even though she doesn’t believe him, he treats her like a queen. He’s head-over-heels in love with Callie and proves it even more when she’s accused of murder. Will Callie see herself the way Ben sees her? Will she be cleared of murder (with the help of Anna and Ben) or will she be next on the murderer’s list?

I loved this book and I highly recommend it! I laughed, swooned, gasped and was totally taken in by the story. I cheered when Callie and Ben kissed for the first time and the antics of Anna made me laugh out loud. I mean, trying to trap a murderer by attending the funeral of the one you’re accused of killing? Haggerty has a talent for comedic timing and I’m a devout fan!

I swooned over Ben and his patience with Callie. He’s a sexy cop who’s totally in love with a curvy woman who doesn’t realize how damn sexy she is. He helps her in so many ways and he’s sweeter than a German chocolate cupcake.

The best part, though, was I didn’t know who the murderer was until it was revealed to me. Well done, Haggerty.

If you love romantic comedy with dashes of mystery and suspense, you have to read this book! I can’t wait for a television or film producer to make this into a movie/show. You hear me, Hollywood? This is a gem!

Favorite Character: Callie, hands down. While I could relate to her on the whole body image thing, it was her humorous outlook on life and love that made me fall in love with her. I want to hang out with her and of course eat her cupcakes. Yummy!

Favorite Quote:

“I have no words. I stare at him until he motions for me to get my act together. Yeah, like that’s possible after Detective Hottie declares he wants to spend his nights with you.” ~Callie

It’s #CozyMystery Day and I List My Favorites for Friday Book Round-Up #amreading #books

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up! Today is Cozy Mystery Day on the blog and I thought it would be fun to talk about one of my favorite genres – cozy mystery. I was first introduced to the cozy mystery back in the 1980’s with Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. Needless to say, I was hooked from that moment on. Cozy mysteries are fun reads because they have adventure, mystery, humor and by the end of the book the bad man/woman has been caught. So, here are my top six favorite cozy mystery series. Some you may have heard of while others may be new to you. I highly recommend them all.

  • Miss Marple by Agatha Christie: I love this series of short stories because Miss Marple has a keen eye, quiet disposition and can outsmart any police detective. I recommend you read the stories, even if you have seen the movies.

  • The Cat Who… series by Lilian Jackson Braun: Anyone who has observed cats knows they are smarter than they appear. In this series, the cats (Koko and Yum Yum) help their owner (Jim Quilleran) solve mysteries. I love the witty dialogue and the cats solving crimes better than the humans around them. It’s delightful and my favorite book has got to be, The Cat Who Talked to Ghosts.

  • The Aunt Dimity series by Nancy Atherton: American Lori Sheppard moves to an English village thanks to an inheritance from “Aunt” Dimity (an old friend of her late mother’s). Dimity herself communicates with Lori via a magical journal to help solve mysteries involving Lori and her neighbors. Brilliant cozy mysteries and I love them all!

  • Funny Adventures of Mina Kitchen with Recipes by Lizz Lund: Meet Mina Kitchen, a forty-something single who likes to cook – and cook and cook. In fact, her zest for whipping up trays of canapes is dwarfed only by her weird luck and mountain-lion size tabby cat, Vinnie. That, and her godmom’s tendency for blackmailing new members into joining St. Bart’s. Okay, maybe Mina’s Swiffer-addicted neighbor, Vito, is a bit weird, too. As if all that wasn’t enough, Mina’s a Jersey girl transplanted in the midst of the Amish-flavored countryside of Lancaster, PA. Things get really complicated when she learns that her neighbor Vito is in a witness protection program, and her dry cleaner deals in prescription samples. Throw in a few mysterious flaming feces flingers and a fuse box labeled in Arabic, and you have a recipe for catering disorders. If you’re looking for a cozy mystery, packed with humor, chatty animals (in the guise of pets) — and a bit of suspense — look no further. Lund’s debut hilarious light hearted mystery blends delightful characters and great dialogue with a dash of zany mysteries and thrillers. I couldn’t have said it better myself! I gobble up every mystery Lizz Lund publishes faster than you can whip up a martini. Delightful and I highly recommend!

  •  Jamie Quinn Mysteries by Barbara Venkataraman: I just read and reviewed this series. You can read about it on the blog. I love this series because Jamie is real, honest and quirky. She’s a divorce lawyer playing detective with a cast of lovable side kicks including Duke, the PI.

Happy Reading!

Molly's Misadventures

Title: Molly’s Misadventures

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

I’m having the suckiest day ever. First, my father, aka Mr. Grumpy Pants, calls to say his nurse just walked out on him. Likely story. I rush home to pack, only to walk in on my husband getting it on with his younger, skanky secretary. Unfortunately, my quick weekend trip home to fix Dad’s problems turns into a stay of a few weeks. Luckily, I’ve got Danny, the neighbor boy I’ve had a crush on since I was a dorky, braces-wearing, nose-buried-in-a-book teenager, and a brand-spanking new blog to keep my mind off things. Before I know it, I’m writing product reviews of vibrators and getting questioned by a store rent-a-cop at the world’s worst date ever. All while trying to figure out how to take things with Danny to the next level. Not to complicate things or anything, but my boss decides to give me an ultimatum—come back in four weeks or don’t come back at all. How in the world did my life get so complicated?

mollys-misadventures_teaser-2

My Review:

I first discovered D. E. Haggerty when I read her Grey Haired Knitting Detectives cozy mysteries. When I found out she’d written a romantic comedy, I knew I would be in for a treat. What I didn’t know was that I would develop a side-ache from laughing so hard.

Molly’s having a bad day. She gets a call from her father in Florida telling her his nurse just up and left. But that’s nothing compared to walking in her front door to find her husband buck naked and screwing his skanky secretary. I love that word, skanky.

“It’s not what it looks like,” hubby wails.

Yeah, likely story. * rolls eyes *

Great beginning to a romantic comedy and I was hooked.

Molly flies down to Florida to a spend only a few days with her father but things get complicated real quick. Her dad is a horrific patient, and Molly’s running out of options.

But things perk up when she sees her high school crush (next door neighbor) Danny. Molly and Danny reacquaint themselves and sparks fly. He challenges her to start writing and before she can say no, her girlfriend starts a blog (on her behalf). Things move quickly and Molly must decide if she can put on her big girl panties and take the leap (in both love and life) or will she be too scared?

This romantic comedy is hysterical from start to finish and there were so many times when I was rooting for Molly. Go for it! Take the plunge! Kiss him, already! To say that I became a part of the story is an understatement.

I loved everything about Molly, from her insecurities to putting on her “big girl panties” to going on a lot of first dates to the ladies in her blog class, and she reminded me myself when I first took the plunge and started my own blog. She’s the real deal and her inner dialogue made me laugh out loud.

Danny is a sweet, funny, down-to-earth guy for Molly and sparks fly between the two. I was rooting for them as a couple from the beginning. I swooned, laughed, sighed happily and loved where he took her for their first date.

While this is a fun, flirty romantic comedy, D. E. Haggerty deals with some very real issues (infidelity, divorce, taking care of an elderly parent, career change, taking on your life-long dream, single parent, love, etc.). She balances the serious issues many of my generation faces with humor, wacky situations and grace.

One of the best books I’ve read this year! Don’t hesitate: buy and read this book. Who knows, it may inspire you to chase after your dreams!

Favorite Character:

Molly. I loved her as a character because she is so much fun! She was a delight to read and was honest to a fault. She told it like it was and there was an immediate connection between myself and Molly. I could relate to her on so many levels and I wish she was one of my friends.

Favorite Quote:

“All I know is that every man in the universe, even a hot millionaire who happens to be a good guy as well, pales in comparison with Danny. Oh boy, I’m in trouble.” ~ Molly

“Sometimes my mouth opens before my brain can stop it.”

“A thong,” Grandma chortles. “Don’t you know better than to wear dental floss for underwear?’”

“He’s so far out of my league I’m surprise the dating police haven’t hauled him away for a grievous felony.”

Short Excerpt:

“Excuse me,” I say as I try to catch the bartender’s attention. The bartender, however, is more interested in the young girls prancing around than in me. I sigh and lean onto the bar ensuring that the girls are visible. “Excuse me,” I say again, but this time I use a sultry voice – or at least that’s what I’m going for. The bartender finally looks my way and I smile when I see his eyes immediately lured to my cleavage. Gotcha! “Tequila shot with a beer chaser, please.” He jumps to fulfill my order, but nearly trips as he attempts to maintain eye contact with my bosom and reach for the tequila bottle at the same time.

I hear someone chuckle beside me and turn to see a hotter than hot piece of male specimen staring at me. I immediately feel my face burn. The bartender saves me by slamming my drinks down in front of me. I grab the tequila shot and quickly down it before latching onto the beer to soothe my burning esophagus. Good thing I have lots of practice or I would probably spit the beer out like a college freshman during rush week, although I may have coughed just a teensy bit.

Sufficiently fortified, I turn to the man again and notice him watching me. He raises an eyebrow. “I tried that trick earlier,” he says, tilting his head towards the bar, “but the bartender didn’t seem impressed with my assets.” I look him up and down. “You look pretty hot to me,” I say and then slap my hand over my mouth when I realize my comment probably sounded like some lame pick-up line.  “Sorry.” Is it possible for my face to spontaneously burst into flames?  “Sometimes my mouth opens before my brain can stop it.”

The man laughs and shakes his head. He reaches out to shake my hand just as a loud, obnoxious bell rings. “That’s my cue,” I say as I jump off the barstool. I wobble a bit, and hottie reaches out to steady me with his hand on my elbow. I gasp as a current of pure electricity moves through my arm. I startle and nearly trip in my heels.

Jack groaned and hid his face in his hands. This is what his life was reduced to? Getting set up on blind dates by eighty-year-old grandmas? He was pretty sure this was the definition of pathetic.

“Underwear,” Betty repeated. “Why do you need cross-dressing underwear?”

Jack’s face pinked slightly. “Well, you know, to tuck certain assets away.”

The ladies giggled and glanced at his package, which was obviously not tucked away. Clearing his throat and resisting temptation to cover his family jewels with his hands, Jack continued. “And on this side, we have the big and beautiful section for women.”

“Hands in the air. Drop to your knees” was shouted at them. Blinded by a flashlight, it was impossible to identify the speaker.

Martha huffed. “There is no way I’m going to my knees, young man,” she yelled at the light.

“Me either. I’ll never be able to get up again,” Ally agreed and put her hands on her hips in protest.

Jack shook his head but quickly dropped to his knees. Only he would get caught while snooping with two grandmas who refused to listen to the police. He hung his head and pretended he was somewhere else, anywhere else.

Short Excerpt:

“I hate you,” Jack whispered as the door opened again. Danny ushered in a beautiful man and Jack perked up immediately. Izzy gave him a side-long glance but he ignored her. Things were looking up.

“This is Damien,” Danny said before backing slowly out of the office, eyes glued to the man candy that was Damien.

Izzy jumped up to shake his hand. Jack just stared until she kicked him in the shin. Then he stood up as well, but he looked like he was in a trance as he reached forward to shake Damien’s hand. Izzy had to cover her mouth to keep from giggling.

“So,” Izzy began once everyone had sat down and Jack had inspected Damien from top to toe. “Why do you want to work here?”

Damien turned his dazzling smile on Izzy and winked. “Seriously? This store is awesome.”

“Are you a cross-dresser?” Jack asked before Izzy had a chance to kick him again.

“No,” he shook his head. “But I think it’s great that someone is willing to have a store dedicated to cross-dressers in such a small town in Oklahoma of all places.”

“You do realize that a significant portion of the store’s income comes from the big and beautiful women’s section,” Izzy pointed out.

Damien waved his hand in dismissal of her objection. “But that’s great as well. Everyone should have good clothing options.” He looked at Jack for confirmation and Jack nearly took his head off nodding in agreement. Izzy had to stifle yet another laugh.

Jack cradled his head in his hands with his elbows on the table staring at Damien. Obviously it was up to Izzy to conduct this interview. “Tell us about your work experience.”

The interview lasted 30 minutes, but Jack couldn’t tell you one single thing that was said during that time. He was too busy trying to keep his drool from spilling out of his mouth. Izzy cleared her throat and Jack realized that everyone was standing. He quickly jumped to his feet and shook Damien’s hand, holding on for as long as possible. Damien gave him a megawatt smile before turning to leave.

Izzy collapsed in the chair and turned squinted eyes on Jack. “No.”

Jack flounced into his chair and decided to play innocent. “Whatever do you mean, my dear?” He might be overdoing the innocent thing.

Everyone stops talking when I enter the kitchen. Oh great a confrontation. I do so love confrontations; especially when I’m dressed in sleep shorts and a tank top with no bra. It gives me no end of confidence to confront people with my boobs hanging out.

“The grandmas scare you? They’re a bunch of old ladies that go to church and knit together. What’s scary about that?”

Tommy shakes his head. “You have no idea what they’re capable of.” I shrug. Is he serious? “They put ex-lax in the brownies at church!”

“Shoot! I’m going to fry for Brock’s murder.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Damien speaks for the first time. “They don’t use the electric chair in Oklahoma. It’s lethal injection.”

Short Excerpt:

The entrance to the strip club is open and in the small area between the open front door and the second door sits a man on a stool. As we approach, he stands and crosses his arms over his chest. Oh, my god! Call the press! We’ve found King Kong and he’s apparently a bouncer at a titty bar in the outskirts of Oklahoma City.

“Hey man,” Jack says to King Kong and attempts to saunter past.

King Kong shakes his head. “Um no, I can’t let you in.” He points to Grandma and her posse. “They are instant boner killers. Not good for business, man.”

Betty huffs. “You’re going to let in two gay men but not us?”

King Kong shrugs. “I don’t care if the gay dudes want to make a stripper sandwich. But the customers are going to run out of here like their asses are on fire the second this AARP bus arrives.”

The ladies huff, but they know a lost cause when they see one. Betty looks ready to take on the gorilla. Thankfully, Grandma and her cronies grab her arms and pull her away from the entrance before she starts a riot. Izzy watches them leave and then turns to the bouncer whose eyes about bug out when he sees her baby bump.

“What are you trying to do to me? First, old ladies and now a pregnant one.” He points at Izzy’s bump. “You! No! These men don’t need to be reminded of the consequences of fooling around on the side.”

Izzy rubs her belly but shrugs and follows the ladies to their car. I turn to the giant-sized man and see his gaze on me. “Am I okay? Can I go in?”

The giant’s eyes sweep from head to toe over me and suddenly I feel like I need a shower. I shiver as he reaches to his crotch and adjusts himself. Gross. Totally gross. “Oh yeah, babe, you’re welcome. Make sure you talk to the bartender about dancing. You’d make a killing.”

I was born and raised in Wisconsin, but think I’m a European (and have the EU passport to prove it!). After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. My flying Dutch husband and I have lived in Ohio, Virginia, the Netherlands, Germany and now Istanbul. We still haven’t decided if we want to settle down somewhere – let alone where. I’m leaning towards somewhere I can learn to surf even though the hubby thinks that’s a less than sound way to decide where to live. Although I’ve been a military policewoman, a commercial lawyer, and a B&B owner, I think with writing I may have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. That’s assuming I ever grow up, of course. Between playing tennis, running much slower than I would like, trying to adopt every stray dog within a 5-mile radius, traveling to exotic new locales, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, addictively watching new movies and reading books like they are going out of style, I write articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, review other indie authors’ books, write a blog about whatever comes to mind and am working on my seventh book.

When they aren’t re-enacting scenes from spy thrillers, they’re setting Jack up on dates and generally insinuating themselves into his love life. They’re determined to find love for Jack as well as his missing money. Will Jack catch a thief or find love? Either way Jack’s going to get his man.

My Review:

I loved this book from the moment I started reading it. Jack is living the best life ever. That is, until his sexy brand-new bookkeeper discovers a financial mess. Suddenly, Jack’s life is spinning out of control. Someone he trusts is stealing huge amounts of money and rigging the books. Will Jack discover who’s behind the betrayal and finally get his man?

This is a modern-day screwball comedy, complete with new crushes, annoying exes, extortion, best friends and a gang of elderly knitting Murder She Wrote wannabes. I laughed my way throughout Jack’s misadventures, from hiring a bookkeeper to unravelling the mystery behind the missing money. The romance was sweet and the heat level was low.

What I loved most about this book was the way the author concentrated on the characters and plot. The characters flew off the page and I grew attached to them. I want to read more adventures of Jack and the gang.

If you’re looking for a light, funny romance, this is the book for you!

Favorite Character:

Jack. I had a best friend like Jack when I was living in California years ago. Many times when I was reading this book, I could see myself in the character Izzy, Jack’s best friend. I loved how honest and emotional he was. He came across as a living being rather than just a two-dimensional character in a romantic comedy.

My Rating: 5 stars

Author Biography:

I was born and raised in Wisconsin but think I’m a European. After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. After high school I returned to the U.S. to go to college ending up with a Bachelor’s degree in History at the tender age of twenty while still managing to spend time bouncing back and forth to Europe during vacations. Unable to find a job after college and still suffering from wanderlust, I joined the U.S. Army as a Military Policewoman for five years. While stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, I met my future husband, a flying – literally – Dutchman. After being given my freedom from the Army, I went off to law school. I finished law school and moved to the Netherlands with my husband and became a commercial lawyer for more than a decade. During a six month break from the lawyering world, I wrote my first book,Unforeseen Consequences. Although I finished the book, I went back to the law until I could no longer take it and upped stakes and moved to Germany to start a B&B. Three years after starting the B&B, I got the itch to try something new and decided to pull the manuscript for Unforeseen Consequences out of the attic and get it published as an e-book. Deciding that I may have indeed finally found what I want to do with my life, I went on to write Buried Appearances. After moving to Istanbul, I wrote Life Discarded. Feeling pressured by my girlfriends to write a chick lit novel, I tried my hand at humor with Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem. Since that was so much fun, I decided to make a series with the characters from the book. Between playing tennis, running much slower than I would like, trying to adopt every stray dog within a 5-mile radius, traveling to exotic new locales, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, addictively watching new movies and reading books like they are going out of style, I write articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, review other indie authors’ books, write a blog about whatever comes to mind and am working on my sixth book.
