Penny White and the Marriage of Gryphons ebook

Title: The Marriage of Gryphons (Penny White 3)

Author: Chrys Cymri

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Book Blurb:

A blast of wind flicked hair from my face. Long toes wrapped around my waist, claws prickling through fur and clothing as I was snatched from the ground. The dragon lifted me high into the grey skies above Llundain. Of the many words going through my head, Oh, bother, was the only one worthy of a priest.

When I’d discovered the existence of Daear, Earth’s magical parallel world, I thought all of my dreams had come true. Riding the handsome dragon, Raven, arguing with my gryphon Associate, Morey, and raising Clyde, a mischievous snail shark, lessen the monotony of my life as the priest of a small village church. And I’ve also met Peter, a man who agrees with me that Doctor Who and single malt whisky are proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

But Raven has gone missing, and finding him would mean a hazardous trip to the Arctic. Morey’s attempts to prove himself worthy of marriage to his love, Taryn, are putting all of us in danger, particularly my younger brother, James. Can I keep those I love safe in a world which has little love for humans?

Excerpt:

I was distracted from Morey’s answer as I noticed something glinting against the blue sky. My sunglasses were steaming slightly, and I rubbed my glove over the lenses. The tumbling object was small, oblong, and grey-brown. And I clearly heard a tenor voice sing out, ‘Geronimo!’

My mouth dried. ‘Morey, it’s Clyde!’ Though why he was channelling the Eleventh Doctor was beyond me.

But the gryphon was already tearing at my coat. He forced his way out, claws catching against the fur as he launched himself upwards. ‘Nattoralik, nattoralik, nattoralik!’ the lemmings squealed, tumbling over and around each other as they scurried away from me. The word wasn’t in any language I recognised, but the terror was obvious.

‘Gryphon,’ I snapped at them, a different fear making my heart pound. ‘And that’s a malwen siarc, if you really want to know.’

Malwen siarc,’ the lemmings echoed. ‘Malwen siarc, malwen siarc.

Morey had placed himself below Clyde, and his wings pounded as he turned upside down. My hands curled inside my gloves. The gryphon might be several times larger than the snail, but Clyde was heavy for his size. The impact would surely drive both of them to the ground. Would Morey’s brave rescue attempt end up with both of my friends dead?

The lemmings swarmed away from me. Both groups pulled together, forming one large mass, piling on top of each other into a furry pile. Clyde smacked into Morey’s chest. The gryphon’s claws scrabbled at the shell, trying to get a grip as he fought to right himself. His wings were beating furiously at the air, but he was losing altitude rapidly. I could feel a scream rising in my throat.

Movement from the lemmings dragged my gaze down again. A few of the rodents perched on the backs of the others, issuing squeaks which adjusted the position of the group. I just had enough time to realise what they were doing when Morey and Clyde smacked into their midst.

There were squeals and snow flurried up around the mix of white, purple, and grey. I hurried over as fast as snowshoes would allow. A stream of Welsh curses eased some of the tension in my chest, making me realise that Morey, at least, was alive. ‘Clyde?’

‘Sure, ask after the kid.’ Lemmings pulled away to reveal Morey, staggering slightly on the dug up snow.

‘I could hear that you’re okay.’ The lemmings surrounded the snail, and I feared the worst. ‘Clyde?’

Multiple small bodies churned. And Clyde was raised up from their midst. The snail was perched on several backs like a footballer who had kicked in the winning goal. ‘Arweinydd mawr, arweinydd mawr, arweinydd mawr.’ The lemmings spoke in an awed whisper. ‘Arweinydd mawr, arweinydd mawr, arweinydd mawr.

‘Great leader’? I watched as Clyde glanced around him. He extended his body to full length, and his jaws cracked open as he smiled at the lemmings. Much to my surprise, this excited rather than terrified them.

The Temptation of Dragons by Chrys Cymri is Superb! #fantasy #bookreview #dragons

Penny-White-and-the-Temptation-of-Dragons 2

Title: The Temptation of Dragons

Author: Chrys Cymri

Genre: Fantasy, Dragons

Book Blurb:

Bishop Nigel smiled at me. ‘Holy water doesn’t harm vampires. Which is just as well, as it would make it impossible to baptise them.’

When I was asked by a dragon to give him the last rites, I never dreamed it would lead to negotiating with his cannibalistic family or running from snail sharks. Life as the priest of a small English village is quite tame in comparison. At least I have Morey, a gryphon with sarcasm management issues, to help me. And if all else fails, there’s always red wine and single malt whisky.

As if my life weren’t complicated enough, a darkly beautiful dragon named Raven keeps appearing where I least expect him, I’ve met a handsome police inspector who loves science fiction as much as I do, and my younger brother is getting into trouble for trying to pick up vampires.

That’s what happens when you’re dealing with an incredible and dangerous parallel world full of mythical creatures. And I have to learn to navigate it all without losing myself, or my brother…

My Review:

One of the most imaginative and unique fantasy books I’ve read in a long time.

Reverend Penny White is a priest in a small English village. Life as a priest is far from exciting, or so Penny thought. On her way home, she sees a car accident and ends up giving last rites to a very large dragon hidden in the shadows. Yes, a dragon. A chance encounter that changes Penny’s life forever.

Now, she’s dealing with adjusting to an alternative world (located ironically in Wales) and all of its paranormal inhabitants. Watching Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn’t prepare her for this. Working full-time as a priest and part-time in Lloegyr, helping when needed. But when she meets Raven, brother to the dragon she gave last rites to, sparks fly in the most unusual way. Will Penny give into her feelings for Raven while keeping up with the two worlds she’s straddling or will she reject it all for the quiet village priest existence she craves?

In order to give this book justice, I must share the thoughts I had when reading:

“Wow, the worldbuilding is so superb, so descriptive, I want to live there and brush up on my Welsh.”

“The dialogue is classic British cosy fiction with modern cultural references (Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, twerking, Sherlock Holmes, etc.) and told from Penny’s viewpoint. BBC, if you’re reading this, pick up the rights to this literary series right away so millions of us can watch this on the telly. Oops, my British accent got the better of me.”

“The slow-burning attraction between Penny and Raven was addictive. I had to keep reading to find out what happened next.”

“Penny’s relationship with her associate, Morey (named after Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes), made me laugh out loud. He’s a riot and when he disappears, it’s Penny (and a lovable snail shark) who restores him to his sarcastic self.”

“Penny White is not your pious priest; she’s human like all of us and it’s her humanity that is at the heart of this story.”

If you’re a fan of fantasy with doses of humor, please don’t hesitate and pick up this book. You’ll be swept away by the mythical creatures (including dragons), humorous dialogue, adventure and one priest who’s always been intrigued by dragons. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Even Dragons Get the Blues… Take These Broken Wings @LiviaQuinn #books #dragons #MFRWAuthor

Broken Wings EBOOK 06252016 copy

How do you handle stress?

Sheriff Jack Lang came to Destiny after hearing it was a normal “safe” small town – the perfect place to raise his teenage daughter after years of abuse by his crazy ex. Well, the “normal” ship sailed the day he met Tempest Pomeroy. The weeks that followed challenged him far beyond his years as a Navy pilot. He’d been both appalled and attracted to the quirky mail carrier with the rainbow shaded hair and unpredictable weather “talents”. The events of the last months had rolled over them like a tidal wave and just as he was getting used to the idea of being a human lawman in a town of supernaturals, his world had been turned upside down.

Blurb:

Five months ago, Sheriff Jack Lang would have sworn there were no such things as vampires, tempestaeries, djinn or dragons. That was before he met Tempest Pomeroy, trouble magnet and sexy redheaded mail lady. He’d fallen for her before he found out about her “special abilities”. But that wasn’t what turned his life upside down. No, to say Jack’s world had gone FUBAR was like saying Wolverine’s fingernails were long enough for a manicure.

Tempe had been afraid her supernatural nature would be a problem for Jack, who’d mistaken Destiny for a “Mayberry-like” small town, but that didn’t explain why he’d left her in favor of haunting the highest levees in the parish. She knew he’d received a shock, but what was it going to take to get him to return to his life and to her? A stubborn man is one thing; a grumpy, depressed twenty-ton dragon is a bit more of a challenge.

Excerpt:

My stomach growled, again, and I caught a tantalizing whiff. What was it with this persistent aching hunger? Lately, I ate anything in my path, and I mean anything.

One thing had changed, however¾my sense of smell. I could smell a flea farting at fifty paces. I walked quickly around the building, tossing the coffee to the curb and marched like a laser beam – straight to the green dumpster at the rear of the parking lot.

The next thing I knew I was hip deep in trash, my new sniffer guiding me through an assortment of bags and boxes. My stomach thundered, but I was getting used to it, being hungry, I mean. I didn’t know what it took to fill up my dragon gut because so far it had never been full. And these pickings were slim.

What once would’ve turned Jack Lang’s stomach wasn’t bothering me, Jack Lang, Dragon Shifter, in the least. From here on, I’d be thinking of dumpsters as food banks.

I took in the chewed chicken wings, packets of catsup, smashed French-fries and hushpuppies, a bag of dredging flour and cornmeal. My mind lumped it together as energy. I squeezed the catsup onto my tongue. I couldn’t get enough, the containers and packaging were slowing me down. I popped leftover bones and followed them with handfuls of flour. Then I spotted a bucket of old grease and food sitting by the door to the dumpster. Yum!

As I reached for the handle a pair of familiar work boots and tanned legs entered my field of vision. “Jack, what are you doing in that dumpster?”

Tempe’s eyes widened when she saw my face, my hand on the handle of the bucket. I followed her gaze to the flour covering my shirt, pants and boots. I’d been single-mindedly scavenging and hadn’t had a clue that my uniform was caked in white crud, probably my face as well.

“Oh, this?” I couldn’t stop… I was on a binge. I reached for the bucket of slop, which had probably been awaiting some pig farmer, and upended it like a Super Duper 90 drink from Gatorz Grub.

While I guzzled the rich fatty mix of lard and leftovers I watched Tempe’s face turn green and she grimaced. “That is so gross!”

I stopped long enough to belch. “Hold that thought.” I finished off the bucket, let out an audible sigh of satisfaction, wiped my hands on my pants and tossed her my keys. “Do me a favor, will ya? Grab one of the duffels from my trunk.”

Her face said I needed more than just a clothing change. Well, it is what it is. I realized I was approaching midday with a different attitude, although it probably wasn’t quite the attitude Tempe had been looking for. When she returned, I pulled myself away from my delicious snack—I could always slip back tonight after they’d restocked my dumpster—they were open twenty-four hours.

I burped and cut a big gust, as we Navy pilots say. Tempe stopped a couple feet away pinching her nose shut. “Zeuus, Jack! Uu bight deed to thee a twagon toctor.” She extended the duffel to me with one finger of her other hand, as if she was afraid of getting cooties. I stripped off my shirt and pants and tugged on the clean clothes.

“Where did you come from?” I asked.

“I was on my way to Harmony and spotted your cruiser. I was just curi¾ Her voice trailed off.

“You were curious if I’d gone back to work like I said I would. You don’t have to worry, Tempe, darling.” I winced at my sarcastic tone. There was going to be hell to pay for treating the women I loved like this, but right now… “I stopped for coffee but after I meet with the ME, and have lunch with my mom, I plan to find Jordie wherever she is and let her flay my scales off. Then I have a case to solve.”

She didn’t miss that I hadn’t mentioned us. Things were not kosher in Denmark, or whatever that saying was, but I was making some baby steps toward taking my old life back. That was good, right?

“What’s up with the dumpster diving?”

I adjusted my gun belt on my hip and shrugged, “I was hungry.”

“Well, sorry I interrupted. Have you talked to Conor about this…um… hunger problem?” Tempe asked.

“Nope.” I spotted two nearly whole turkey legs lying on top of a trash bag and reached in snagging them—with two claws that shot out of my fingertips! “Shit.”

“What is it?” Tempe jumped forward, alarmed.

I held up my hand to show Tempe the drumsticks speared on a pair of five-inch claws. “How am I supposed to investigate when… claws pop out of my hands when I least expect it?”

“Um, well…” her lips twisted in a grimace. She shrugged.

“Right.” I took two chomps on the grimy, rotten legs then tossed them over my shoulder into the dumpster as I walked away, staring as the claws receded when they weren’t needed anymore. Which actually kind of rocked.

Jack’s Thinking It Couldn’t Get Any Worse. Wrong! @LiviaQuinn #dragons #POTLReads #IARTG

BlameIOTM web copy

Is it Mayberry or Middle Earth? Well, duh… Ages ago a pact was made between the supernatural species – shifters, djinn, dragons, vampires and fae – to protect humans. Just don’t tell the humans…

One meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it!

Jack Lang has a giant problem, more than one actually.

As a former Navy pilot and now sheriff of Destiny, Jack’s job is to protect and defend. It’s in his DNA. He thought this town was going to be the perfect, safe place to raise his teenage daughter, kinda like Mayberry. Wrong. He’d handled one shock after another, and rather well he thought, considering he had to accept the fact that his girfriend could turn into a volcanic thundercloud, her father and brother were djinn and the newcomer to town was a black er, dragon.

Well, that was nothing compared to this newest revelation. Apparently something else was part of his DNA as well…

This might be the last straw. But knowing Destiny, there’d always be another haystack.

Excerpt:

*Jack*

Some things had been irrevocably changed in Destiny, not the least of which, my life and Jordie’s and our acceptance of Destiny’s other nature. I’d had reservations about how a human sheriff could fit in to this world of Tempe’s, but so far it seems like it will be no different than defending different cultures and races like I have in my other jobs.

Ryan would never be the same, and I was sure a few citizens had probably seen more strange things than they had on the last Hobbit movie. Dylan hadn’t come out so well. I wondered what the Paramortals would be able to do for him. He didn’t seem to be the type to accept his new life as a mere-dog, or a wolf pup.

Kat had left a text on my phone saying he’d runaway yet again and asked me to contact Conor to see if he might talk some sense into him. How did she know they’d even be able to communicate? I’d like to be on hand for that little dragon-canine chat.

I walked down the hallway past Jordie’s room. Flipping the light on in the bathroom, I put the toilet seat up and took care of business, then I stepped over to the sink to wash my hands. Something on the periphery of my vision caught my eye. I turned toward the mirror, then jumped back landing against the door.

“What the—”

The face of a dragon stared back at me. What the hell? Now they were communicating from another plane by appearing in mirrors. I moved toward the sink, squinting at him.

Could this be the dragon who’d helped Conor? He was different than Conor, silvery, his scales like shiny clear crystals. Pretty, almost. Maybe it was a female. So what did he or she want? The eyes were a light silver and the head had a sleeker shape than our black dragon friend.

I yawned. And snorted when he mimicked me. This fellow was some kind of comic. What did he want?

In the mirror the dragon’s silver skin fluttered and I felt a shiver on my own shoulders. I scratched my chest. There was some kind of image forming on his chest—his human chest.

My eyes widened.

His widened.

The chest in the mirror was the same one I’d been looking at for the last several years, except, with rapt attention I watched as the crystalline scales began to spread down his shoulders across his chest, across the swirling image.

My mouth gaped open. When his mouth opened it revealed lots of graduated teeth and four exceptional canines. My hands went to my mouth in shock—and grabbed the wide snout of the dragon. It was… I was… No, no, no, no…”No!”

“Tempeeee.”

*Tempe*

Zeus’ flying pigs!

“Tempeeee.”

I lurched from the bed. Where was Jack? I ran down the hall toward the guest bathroom, but he wasn’t there. There was scraping and bumping coming from the other end of the house near the kitchen, like clumsy moving men in too small a space.

“Jack?” It was not a big house. “Jack!” He must have gone to the back porch. I took off in that direction, suddenly concerned over what I’d find.

Why wasn’t he answering me? On the other end of the hallway there were gouges in the green sheetrock. Concern turned to fear. Had he gotten into a fight with a burglar?

The back door was open, the screen door hanging on one hinge. I stopped on the threshold to the small back porch. Menori came alive inside me, not threatened I realized, but excited.

In the middle of the backyard—shootfire—taking up the entire green space that was Jack’s backyard was the most beautiful dragon I’d ever seen. He was not as big as Conor, maybe fifteen feet tall. Light from the full moon reflected on his luminescent scales, like Swarovski crystals, shooting brilliant spears of rainbow fire into the trees and across the fence into the neighbors’ backyards.

His skin rippled from head to tail and when I looked into his eyes, I gasped, recognizing him, and had to stifle a laugh. “Jack, what—” I couldn’t help it. I laughed.

DRAGONS-ARE-PEOPLE-TOO-1600x2400

Summary from Goodreads:

Never judge a dragon by her human cover…

Sixteen-year-old Kitty Lung has everyone convinced she’s a normal teen—not a secret government operative, not the one charged with protecting the president’s son, and certainly not a were-dragon. The only one she trusts with the truth is her best friend—and secret crush—the über-hot Bulisani Mathe.

Then a junior operative breaks Rule Number One by changing into his dragon form in public—on Kitty’s watch—and suddenly, the world knows. About dragons. About the Draconic Intelligence Command (DIC) Kitty works for. About Kitty herself.

Now the government is hunting down and incarcerating dragons to stop a public panic, and a new shape-shifting enemy has kidnapped the president’s son. Kitty and Bulisani are the last free dragons, wanted by both their allies and their enemies. If they can’t rescue the president’s son and liberate their fellow dragons before getting caught themselves, dragons might never live free again.

My Review:

Every once in awhile I read a book that totally blows my mind. The story is so well-written and the characters change my perspective on life, love and pursuit of equality. Dragons Are People, Too is such a book.

I had no expectations about this book other than it was about dragons, which I have loved since the 8th grade. The premise doesn’t do it justice but the cover comes close.

Kitty Lung is your typical teenage girl. Goes to school, has a crush on her best friend, argues with her mother, goes on covert operations and is a dragon in charge with protecting the President’s son. Wait, what??!!??

Dragons are among us… and it’s freaking cool! I want to live in Kitty’s world and want to be her friend! Okay back to the story…

The President’s son is kidnapped and suddenly everything Kitty knows is shattered and she is Public Enemy #1. The dragons are captured to “protect the public” and Kitty turns to the only one who understands her, Bulisani. Together, they uncover the secret agenda and vow to free the President’s son and their fellow imprisoned dragons.

The author created such a magnificent world with rich characters, complex plot with twists and turns, a sweet romance, heart-racing action and a message of diversity. I loved it and I want more!

Every person who reads this book will see diversity in a new light because…

Dragons Are People, Too!

Favorite character: Kitty. She kicks butt and when she feels like she can’t go on, she channels her inner beast. She’s complex, sweet, insecure at times and has a purple streak in her hair. What could be better?
