Chasing Bedlam

Title: Chasing Bedlam

Author: Charles E. Yallowitz

Genre: Black Humor, Satire, Dystopia

Book Blurb:

Lloyd and Cassidy’s last adventure was to honor a life. This time they are out to end one.

It was a normal, violent mission to Texas that should have had nothing more than beer-induced hiccups. That is until an old enemy makes off with Cassidy’s jeep and most of their gear. Needless to say, she’s pissed off and challenging Lloyd for the psychopath of the month award. With the mouthy serial killer by her side, she is going on the warpath from Dallas to Miami even if it means declaring war on the drug cartels.

So strap in for another wild ride through the Shattered States and learn why you never mess with Cassidy’s jeep.

My Review:

Readers of Patrick deWitt and Joe Abercrombie, not to mention Tarantino: take a ride with me through the Shattered States.

Lloyd and Cassidy are back and in this adventure, all bets are off. An old rival has stolen Cassidy’s jeep and now she’s out for blood. It doesn’t matter to her who she has to kill or how many, she’s going to make everyone pay.

In the same vein as filmmaker Quintin Tarantino, Yallowitz brilliantly creates a hoard of death, blood and violence all with humorous banter between the characters. Strictly speaking, this is more than dystopian fiction; it’s black humor with bloodshed.

The action is swift and the dialogue is nicely peppered throughout so as to not distract too much from the violence. Lloyd and Cassidy are hilarious while the drug gangs are blissfully stupid. All in all, a fun read.

I found the bloodbath a bit excessive, at times, but that’s just me.

I’m a sucker for a good chapter title and Yallowitz nails these:

Back with a Bang

Child of the Battle Zone

First Sex . . .

. . . Then Violence

Malice on the Mississippi

The City of Beads & Blood

The Cats, The Mouse, & The Monster

Belles of the Homecoming Harvest

Don’t Feed that Puppy!

Nuts!

Attack of the Pricks

Worst Sightseeing Tour Ever

Return of the Old Friend

A Lawsuit Waiting to Happen

Told You I Know a Guy

Debauchery & Dented Skulls

Vengeance with a Side of Chocolate

If you like dystopia, action, lots of gunplay, and/or a killer female main character, 1-click Chasing Bedlam today. Your future self will thank you!

New Megiddo Rising: An ‘Apostates’ Novella by @lars_teeney #bookreview #TuesdayBookBlog

Title: New Megiddo Rising: An ‘Apostates’ Novella

Author: Lars Teeney

Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction

Book Blurb:

At the Dawn of the Texas Republic declaring independence from Mexico, New Megiddo was born. Created by a death cult led by the Reverend Brigham Wainwright, who actively worked to flood the empty, barren land with his American followers; undermining his Mexican overlords.

Fast-forward several centuries and America has become New Megiddo, a theocracy run by the Schrubb Administration, where order is kept using the technology of the [Virtue-Net] to feed the Reverend Wilhelm Wainwright’s sermons to the minds of the people. In the slums, the humble beginnings of an insurgency of Apostates take shape. The cruel and clueless policies of the Church of New Megiddo and the ruling Regime push the disenfranchised masses one step closer to all-out rebellion.

My Review:

This is a book for someone who wants to be transported to a different world…that all the while eerily reminds the reader of current day.  The ‘America’ in this book is craftily created by the author to set the stage for the multifaceted society that exists.  Several of the characters are intriguing and a reader can be caught up in those characters quickly which shows a skill that is hard to find in many of the books today.  The promise that comes from this prequel novella whets the appetite of the reader and leaves one wanting to read the next part of the story.

For me, the necessary detailing of the ruling society drags on and on.  I quickly developed a detestation for the scum who run the ‘church’ society.  I was offended by the leader of the girl’s home who preys on the children he is supposed to be molding.  That pervert needs a good axe in the head.

I was bothered by the detail of Ayane being bullied and brutalized by her ‘school mates’ but then, instead of detail of her murdering the ringleader, it was a fade to black and return.  I would prefer less bullying detail and more detail of the bully being brutally murdered.  That is just me.  I absolutely loved the rebels attack on the deacon caravan in LA.  That was the best writing I saw in the novella and re-read it several times.  That alone makes me want to read book two.

Title: The Never Dawn

Author: R.E. Palmer

Genre: YA Dystopian

Book Blurb:

NEW DYSTOPIAN TRILOGY: BOOK ONE

All his young life, Noah has longed to see the sky he’s only heard about in stories. For over one hundred years, Noah’s people have toiled deep beneath the Earth preparing for The New Dawn – the historic day when they will emerge to reclaim the land stolen by a ruthless enemy.

But when Rebekah, the girl of his forbidden desire, discovers a secret their leader has been so desperate to keep, Noah suspects something is wrong. Together, they escape and begin the long climb to the surface. But nothing could prepare them for what awaits outside.

BOOK TWO, CLOUD CUCKOO is out now!

My Review:

Imagine being forced to live underground and not even being able to see the sky. Mother says it’s for your own protection. Is she telling the truth or is it all a lie?

The Never Dawn is the story of Noah, a young man living in a dystopian society. There are rules for everything and it’s all about the collective good. There is no personal identity, no individuality and if one person amongst your team messes up or slows down, the whole group suffers.

One day, Noah is given the diary of Moses, a hero of his society (called The Ark)  over one hundred years ago, and what he discovers while reading shocks him to the core. Noah shares what he reads with his forbidden crush, Rebekah, and together they embark on a deadly journey to reach the surface. Will they make it or will their enemies put a stop to it?

As someone who isn’t a huge dystopian fan, I really enjoyed it. The characters were original, relatable and I was deeply invested as a reader. Noah was fascinating to watch as he uncovered truths that crumbled his faith. His honest reactions to what he dealt with separated this series from other dystopians for me.

Palmer takes the reader into a society not far from our own and makes us re-evaluate our belief system. Do we blindly believe without searching out answers and if so, are we no better than those in this story?

Highly recommend for fans of Divergent, Hunger Games and those who love immersing themselves in dystopian universes. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Favorite Character: Noah. I attached myself to him almost from page one and it was an emotional roller coaster ride to the end. Seeing him confront reality with faith and deciding for himself what to do was a pleasure. A relatable character many will love.

Welcome Back to the Stone Age — He Runs: Part 1 by @OwenSethAuthor #books #amreading

He Runs Part One

Title – He Runs: Part One

Author – Owen Seth

Genre – Post Apocalyptic / Thriller

Book Blurb

With Mankind relegated to the Stone Age, one man struggles against the cruelty of the world that’s left behind. With many obstacles in his path, every day becomes a fight for survival…against the world and himself.
A psychological, apocalyptic thriller that keeps the reader guessing throughout, He Runs is raw and disturbing and unapologetically brutal.

Excerpt –

Man wanders.

Man explores.

Man runs.

And we find him at this point in his journey, with a dog. It’s a large dog, a black retriever cross, male, with long strands of hair intersecting fleshy areas of mange and a loosely-fitted muzzle engulfing the snout to protect both of them. Man drags the dog using a makeshift lead, fashioned from an electric cord that once hung loose from the back of a TV set. Man holds the cord in his hand, the brown wiring taught with canine strength, and can’t remember the last time he watched TV. He guesses that it was the same day that the lights went off. The same day that initiated the test for Mankind’s love and compassion.

And then broke it.

NOVUS (The Cresecren Chronicles) by @CrystalMarcos #bookreview #IARTG

New Novus Cover Kindle-medium

Title: NOVUS (The Cresecren Chronicles, Book 1)

Author: Crystal Marcos

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, YA Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Ideal for Hunger Games and Divergent fans, Crystal Marcos delivers Novus, a riveting novel set in a dystopian future of action-adventure, suspense, and romance. Intriguing characters and a gripping storyline keep the reader turning page after page.

Being a teenager is hard enough. And what if your life’s path is predetermined? On top of that, you aren’t even Human?

Cayden was given life as a Cresecren. He expected to live out his days with the dysfunctional Human family he was assigned to serve. One fateful night, however, landed him in Gavaron, the home of maimed, elderly, or defiant Cresecren.

Beyond its borders is the Den, an area much more dangerous than he ever imagined. Now seventeen, Cayden unwittingly becomes involved in a conspiracy and is one of a handful of survivors fleeing a deadly attack. They set off on a perilous journey in search of refuge and the truth. Along the way, Cayden begins to comprehend the difference between fully living and merely surviving, while trying to balance his emotions and a forbidden love.

My Review:

I’m not a huge fan of dystopian as I’m more of a HEA reader but after reading this book, Marcos changed my mind. Yes, it’s that well done and it doesn’t surprise me that it’s won several awards.

In Novus, the world is very different from today and there are two distinct races: Human and Cresecren (Artificial Intelligence). Humans created Cresecren to serve them. Flash forward a bit and while the Human Race is struggling to survive, there’s growing hatred toward the Cresecren. The Humans go so far as to send them into “camps” and that is where we meet Cayden and his friends.

While gathering food and supplies, Cayden meets a beautiful human girl. He’s instantly captivated by her and her kindness towards him unfurls emotions he’s not supposed to possess. Suddenly, his world is shaken by a series of attacks and he must gather his friends together in search of a new place to call home. He takes his two new human friends on the journey as well and discovers a whole new world outside of Gavaron, a world both scary and thrilling. Cayden will have to protect those he cares for and decide if he is capable of love or die trying.

The world Marcos has created is complex, dark and full of danger and yet, there is an underlying current of hope and love that I found inspiring. Cayden is a wonderful character and I found myself caring deeply for him. Every obstacle and crisis he faced only brought me closer to him.

Beautifully written, Novus has everything you love in an epic story: a humble hero, a group of friends, a battle of good versus evil, conflicts galore and a forbidden romance. I was sucked right in and the plot moved very quickly. I gasped and was in shock a few times but that only because I didn’t see it coming (a feat for those who can pull the wool over my eyes). The ending I didn’t care for but that’s my own personal opinion. Many dystopian fans will LOVE it!

This was my first book by Crystal Marcos and she’s such a talented writer that I will have to read her other books. If you like moving characters, in-depth world building, intense suspense and action, this book is right up your alley!

Favorite Character:

Cayden. I instantly connected with him and there’s a sweet innocence to him that I found refreshing, especially in a dystopian novel. He’s fascinated by humans and the more he’s around humans, the more human he became. His coming to grips with what it means to truly live (not just survive) touched me.

The Reader of Acheron by Walter Rhein is a Must-Read! @swordreaver #Dystopian #Fantasy

13 10 25 READER Version Cover Spread FINAL

Title: The Reader of Acheron

Author: Walter Rhein

Genre: Heroic Fantasy / Adult Dystopian

Publisher: Perseid Press   http://www.theperseidpress.com/

Book Blurb:

Book One of the Slaves of Erafor series: Reading is forbidden, and the penalty for non-compliance is a life of slavery enabled by the forcible administration of a mind rotting drug. Yet, there are those possessed of the will to seek illumination. Kikkan, a former slave on the run, and Quillion, a mercenary and self-taught scholar. Together they seek out a small band of rebels living in hiding who offer the promise of a better world. Their leader is a mysterious figure known only as The Reader of Acheron.

My Review:

Imagine a world where reading is prohibited and anyone caught reading or in possession of books is sentenced to a life of slavery, forced to take a controlling substance which pretty much turns slaves into zombies. It’s my worst nightmare and unfortunately, this future is closer than we think.

Kikkan is a slave when we first meet him. His owner treats him well and doesn’t force him to take the zombie drugs. But Kikkan is still someone’s property and in a moment of rebellion, he forces his own freedom. He’s on the run but doesn’t know where he belongs, torn between two worlds.

Quillion is a member of the local militia and in need of freedom of his own. He and his buddy (Cole) strike out on their own. They happen upon a farmhouse and discover a roomful of treasures: books. Quillion confesses to Cole his ability to read letters and sentences but has yet to comprehend what he’s reading. Quillion reveals the man who taught him to read was none other than the Reader.

Both Kikkan and Quillion are on an epic journey of self-discovery and the power of reading. Both will face conflicts and everything they believe will be tested. It’s not until their paths cross that we finally understand what it means to be truly free.

This is my first book I have read by this author and I must tell you how much I enjoyed it. He’s a terrific storyteller who weaves philosophy into the story without the reader realizing it. After reading a passage, I had to stop and think about what just happened while contemplating how I’d handle the situation. The scenes with Kikkan were powerful and emotional because the author immerses the reader into the mind of a slave. Rhein strips away pretense and you’re left with raw emotion. Well done!

The characters were realistic and original, which is a feat in today’s publishing market. I connected with each of the characters and found it fascinating to see each one’s morality play out.

When I finished the book, one question echoed in my head: does the banning of reading make society better or worse?

My answer is clear: without books and improving one’s mind, society is much, much worse.

I can’t recommend this book enough! This should be read in every high school classroom and by every adult so we ensure this post-apocalyptic future never comes to fruition.

Favorite Character:

Quillion. I loved his thirst for knowledge and determined to improve his reading skills so that he can understand the meaning in each story. His attempting to read classic literature was a treat for me. He’s a cautious man but knows there’s someone out there who can help him.

Favorite Quote:

“It is the most dangerous weapon in the world. It can play tricks on you. It can drive an unconquerable warrior to take his own life. It can dupe a competent leader into a course of action that will spread death and destruction among his charges. Unless the mind has been disciplined it will consume you.”

#BookReview ~ Dead Girl Running by @AnnMNoser #dystopian #books @CuriosityQuills

Title: Dead Girl Running

Author: Ann M. Noser

Genre: Young Adult/New Adult Crossover Dystopian

Book Blurb:

Eight years ago, SILVIA WOOD’s father died in an industrial accident. After suffering through years of Psychotherapy Services and Mandated Medications for depression and multiple suicide attempts, she longs to work in Botanical Sciences. When the Occupation Exam determines she must work in Mortuary Sciences instead, she wonders if the New Order assigned her to the morgue to push her over the edge.

To appease her disappointed mother, Silvia enters the Race for Citizen Glory, in an attempt to stand out in the crowd of Equals. After she begins training with “golden boy” LIAM HARMAN, she discovers he also lost his father in the same accident that ruined her childhood. Then Silvia meets and falls for Liam’s older cousin, whose paranoid intensity makes her question what really happened to her father. As the race nears, Silvia realizes that she’s not only running for glory, she’s running for her life.

My Review:

Imagine a world where there’s no war, homelessness or citizen unrest. Welcome to the New Order, a society in the not-too-distant future, where citizens are slotted in appropriate occupations, eat rations and get birth control implants (to prevent unwanted pregnancy). The overseers of the New Order are referred to as Suits (reminds me of The Matrix) and there’s always someone watching (surveillance for society’s protection, of course).

Meet Silvia Wood, an eighteen-year old young woman still grieving the loss of her father eight years ago. After two suicidal attempts and a mother who wants her to “fit in”, she seems a perfect match for mortuary sciences. She finds solace in her job and her boss, Gus, is like a father-figure to her.

One day, at the gym, a handsome guy named Liam Harman asks her to enter the Race for Citizen Glory. She’s wary at first but eventually agrees. The increase in rations, alone, is a definite perk. As she and Liam train, she gets to know him better and finds out he lost his father in the accident, too. They quickly become friends and he introduces her to his older cousin, Franco.

Franco is different from anyone she has ever met. His piercing stare sees right into her soul and she quickly falls for him. It doesn’t matter to her that he’s years older than her but he plays hot and cold so she keeps her feelings for him to herself.

Events start happening that cause Silvia to question the world around her. Soon, the race is here and she’s running not only to make her mother proud of her, but to survive.

I’m not a dystopian fan, as a rule, but the premise intrigued me. Ann’s debut novel, How to Date Dead Guys, is still a personal favorite of mine so I had high expectations going in. I immediately loved Silvia and was drawn into her world. I could relate to her losing her dad and feeling so alone in the world. There were times when I laughed, cried and wanted to hug her.

Ann did a masterful job with a complex plot and a myriad of characters. She gets an A for world-building and an A for creating original characters that jump off the page. I forgot I was reading several times and I could visualize everything that was going on.

I loved the budding romance between Franco and Silvia. It wasn’t obvious and very realistic. Guys are confusing, says Silvia a lot, and it reminded me of all the crushes I had when I was her age, trying to figure out if a guy liked me or not.

The last half of the book is filled with intense scenes, twists and turns I didn’t expect. The ending was a shocker and one that, once it was revealed, caused me to gasp aloud. When I reached the end of the book, I wanted to read the next one to find out what happens. I know, I know, I’ll have to be patient.

While I know this is fiction, there are so many elements of the New Order that are present in our world today. Philosophical questions ran around in my head long after I read the last page of Dead Girl Running. This book will stick with you and is a far cry from the fluff being sold today. It’s a must-read, in my opinion, and one that should be read by all… before it’s too late.

I’d love to have more time to write (and run, read, and sleep), but until I find Hermione Granger’s time turner, I will juggle real life with the half-written stories in my head.  Main characters and plot lines intertwine in my cranium, and I need to let my writing weave the tales on paper so I can find out what happens next.

The Torn Love Series @kristend732 #BookReview #dystopian #books #sciencefiction

torn true love

Title: Torn: True Love – Book 1 in the Love Series

Author: K.D. Ferguson

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Romance

Book Blurb:

Everyone has a choice. Abide by the government’s rules and regulations and you may live the average life. Or you can become a Sweeper. Krissa Channing’s destination was clear until Braiden entered her life and clouded her future.

Krissa’s future, which once seemed so promising, is compromised when her relationship with Braiden is forced by the hands of the government. The pressure of an automatic pairing pushes them both down a path they never dreamed they’d travel.

While Krissa accepts the change, Braiden revolts against the government leaving Krissa alone, her heart torn. Should she follow the rules and regulations and continue down the road mapped out for her? Or should she go against everything she’s been taught and follow after her true love?

My Review:

Imagine choosing your mate and your occupation before you graduate high school. This is the choice Krissa Channing faces. She had dreams of living in the Headquarters and being paired with someone similar to her. All this changes when she meets and falls in love with Braiden.

Braiden is aloof, moody and the best friend of her ex-boyfriend (Chance). Krissa mistakenly thinks she can change him. The more she tries to change him, the more he withdraws. His mood-swings and emotional abuse of Krissa got on my last nerve. He’s a total jerk and we’re left to wonder what his deal is.

Circumstances occur which happen to teens and Krissa’s future is in jeopardy. The worst part, Braiden freaks out and leaves her to pick up the pieces.

The author takes us on an emotional roller coaster filled with drama and teenage angst. Questions are left unanswered and I had to read the next book to find out what happens next.

Krissa is a not your typical heroine. Where I am normally drawn to the “kick-butt” type of gal like Buffy from BtVS, I did like her growth in this book. She finally grew a pair and made some decisions on her own.

If you like dystopian romance, this is a good start to a series.

Title: Tore Divided Love – Book 2 in the Love series

Author: K.D. Ferguson

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Romance

Book Blurb:

A future set in stone.

For eighteen year old Krissa Channing a government ruled pairing with Braiden Connor and a move to Headquarters were her set fate. Until Braiden’s sudden disappearance threatens Krissa’s entire future.

After months of endless worry, Krissa has an unexpected meeting with Duke, a perfect suitor that could offer her the future she’s always dreamed of. Just when she begins to regain hope, Braiden returns.

Now, Krissa must find where her heart truly lies. Torn between two loves, she must decide which of their worlds she belongs in. But is such a decision even possible when the choice rests between freedom and love.

My Review:

In book two of the True Love series, we discover Krissa is a shadow of her former self. Braiden has disappeared and she’s barely surviving. Sure, she has a job and a place to live but her whole world is wrapped up in Braiden.

Suddenly, he returns and she tries to make it work. He’s distant but there’s a specific reason why. We catch a glimpse and then he is gone again.

Krissa’s heart is torn to shreds again and I kept shaking my head and begging her to just move on! C’mon girl! You’re more than just Braiden’s girlfriend; you’re an individual with your whole future ahead.

My heart lifted when we meet Duke. Duke is everything Krissa’s dreamt of and he is kind, affectionate and caring; everything Braiden is not. Krissa is torn between two men. Which one will she choose?

Filled with intense scenes and plot twists I didn’t see coming, this book is head and shoulders better than book one. I loved Duke as a character and a potential mate for Krissa. I loved how Krissa responds to adversity, even while her perspective shifts dramatically on the world. I loved the author’s portrayal of the Sweeper unit. It rings true to our society and how we treat those in need. There’s a cliff-hanger at the very end of the book I wasn’t expecting and I gasped in shock.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

 Tattered Altered Love

Title: Tattered Altered Love – Book 3 in the Love series

Author: K.D. Ferguson

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Romance

Book Blurb:

What if you had the chance to change the future, would you take it regardless of the cost? Could you find the strength to overthrow a corrupt government that filled your life, and the lives of countless others, with lies and sadness?

Krissa Channing seemed to be a Headquarters prodigy, on track for a successful pairing and a lifetime of living by government standards. But her destiny was far more than that which was mapped out for her. Upon the discovery of an underground revolution, Krissa is thrown into a world she never knew existed. The devastating losses she has endured have placed her in the position to help lead the movement.

The glittering future offered by the takeover seems to be bright, but how much of the life she once knew is Krissa willing to sacrifice?

My Review:

What if you had the power to change the world? Would you, even if it meant both you and those you love could die?

The government has been controlling the population, through brainwashing and strict rules, and the time has come for an uprising. Krissa (along with Chance) has seen first-hand the corrupt government’s abuse of power. Krissa knows she must take a stand but becoming a leader was not part of the plan. Can she do it, knowing she will be throwing away her life with Duke and her expectations of her parents, in peril?

Freedom always comes at a cost and the third book in the Torn Love series illustrates that. Stereotypes, diversity and the human right to live are all key themes to this book (and the series). I loved how the author pulls in the reader and doesn’t let go. Questions about standing up for what’s right kept swirling around my head while I was reading.

THE best book in the series! Go now and read it! A brilliant book and one that many in our world need to read.

Friday Book Round-Up: #Dystopian #Romance Gems all FREE #books #amreading

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up! I just read my first dystopian romance series and I really enjoyed it. Being a huge fan of The Matrix series, I wondered why I haven’t read more in this genre. I let my fingers do the walking and discovered many must-reads! The best part: they’re all FREE on Amazon right now!!!  So without further ado, here are my latest dystopian romance books I’ve downloaded on my Kindle:

1- Starstruck by Brenda Hiatt

The middle of nowhere just got a lot more interesting!

Nerdy astronomy geek Marsha, M to her few friends, has never been anybody special. Orphaned as an infant and reluctantly raised by an overly-strict “aunt,” she’s not even sure who she is. M’s dream of someday escaping tiny Jewel, Indiana and making her mark in the world seems impossibly distant until hot new quarterback Rigel inexplicably befriends her. As Rigel turns his back on fawning cheerleaders to spend time with M, strange things start to happen: her acne clears up, her eyesight improves to the point she can ditch her thick glasses, and when they touch, sparks fly–literally! When M digs for a reason, she discovers deep secrets that will change her formerly mundane life forever . . . and expose her to perils she never dreamed of.

Book 1 of the award-winning Starstruck series, where teen romance blends with science fiction to open a whole new world of action, adventure and discovery.

STARFALL, the 4th and final book of this series, now available!

2- Until the End of the World by Sarah Lyons Fleming

Cassie Forrest isn’t surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too.

This is difficult enough, but Cassie’s tag along ex-boyfriend and her friend’s bratty sister have a knack for making everything, even the apocalypse, more unpleasant. When the two attract a threat as deadly as the undead to their safe haven, Cassie’s forced to see how far she’ll go to protect those she loves. And it’s a lot farther than she’d anticipated. This, coupled with Adrian’s distant voice on Safe Zone Radio and, of course, the living dead, threaten to put Cassie right back into the funk she just dragged herself out of.

Survival’s great and all, especially when you have leather armor, good friends and home-brewed beer, but there’s something Cassie must do besides survive: tell Adrian she still loves him. And to do that, Cassie has to find faith that she’s stronger than she thinks, she’s still a crack shot and true love never dies.

3- Awakening: Dystopian Romance (Absence of Song Book 1) by C. B. Stone

It’s Not Easy Being Chosen

“Though music is forbidden and could get me in big trouble with the Ministry, I nevertheless often find myself singing softly in spite of the danger.

Little do I know just how much hot water my strange compulsion to sing will actually land me in.

What is happening in the world around me? How is it happening? How does the stranger Noah fit into things? And most importantly… why me? I’m no more special than the next person.

So many questions and so many dangers. All I can do is trust that whatever is happening, it is good. I can see that it’s good, and I refuse to let anyone convince me otherwise.”

Awakening (Absence of Song I)- about 33,000 words in length.

Becoming (Absence of Song II)- about 53,000 words in length

Chosen (Absence of Song III)- about 57,000 words in length

Fantasy dystopian trilogy, please read books in order.

4- PERCEPTION: (A Sci-fi Mystery Dystopian Romance) (The Perception Trilogy Book 1) by Lee Strauss

A Library Journal Selection

ETERNAL LIFE IS TO DIE FOR

Seventeen year old Zoe Vanderveen is a GAP–a genetically altered person. She lives in the security of a walled city on prime water-front property along side other equally beautiful people with extended life spans.

Her brother Liam is missing.

Noah Brody is a natural who lives on the outside. He leads protests against the GAPs and detests the widening chasm they’ve created between those who have and those who don’t. He doesn’t like girls like Zoe and he has good reason not to like her specifically.

Zoe’s carefree life takes a traumatic turn. She’s in trouble and it turns out that Noah, the last guy on earth she should trust, is the only one who can help her.

PERCEPTION is a ( SF/mystery/romance) Young Adult novel that takes place in the not too distant future in a world changed by climate extremes, natural disasters and impending wars, and where scientific breakthroughs cause class divisions–both financially and philosophically. It explores the clash between faith and science and how differences can separate us as enemies or ally us together. And in some cases, even in the midst of betrayal and personal crisis, there’s room to fall in love.

5- Whispers in Autumn (The Last Year Book 1) by Trisha Leigh

In 2015, a race of alien Others conquered Earth. They enslaved humanity not by force, but through an aggressive mind control that turned people into contented, unquestioning robots.

Except sixteen-year-old Althea isn’t content at all, and she doesn’t need the mysterious note inside her locket to tell her she’s Something Else. It also warns her to trust no one, so she hides the pieces that make her different, even though it means being alone.

The autumn she meets Lucas, everything changes.

Althea and Lucas are immune to the alien mind control, and together they search for the reason why. What they uncover is a stunning truth the Others never anticipated, one with the potential to free the brainwashed human race.

It’s not who they are that makes them special, but what.

And what they are is a threat. One the Others are determined to eliminate for good.

6- Reckless Rescue (A Barren Planet Romance Book 1) by Rinelle Grey

He crash-landed on her planet. Can they survive the winter together without falling in love?

Stranded on the dying planet of Zerris, Marlee longs for the one thing she can’t have…a family. Due to the noxious gas covering the planet, she can’t conceive a child, and the Council, determined to repopulate the planet, have ended her third—and most precious—relationship. They insist she pick a new mate and try again, but she’s sworn off love and the possibility of ever having a real family.

When a ship from the thriving planet of Urslat crashes on Zerris, Marlee rescues the ship’s daring captain, Tyris. His ship is grounded, winter is setting in, and he won’t survive without help. She offers him a deal…he can live with her if he pretends to be her mate so the Council will leave her alone.

Tyris agrees and a hungry desire sparks between them as they battle the harsh winter and primitive conditions. Their attraction grows, and soon, keeping their distance becomes impossible, even more challenging than the snow, the Council, and, for Marlee, the risks of a real relationship.

Will she risk her heart one last time for a chance at her dream? Or will Tyris be her undoing?

7- The Beautiful Ones (The Chosen Ones) by Lori Brighton

Some say we’re special, and that’s why we’re kept in seclusion. Beyond those walls evil lurks and innocent prey would be lost in minutes. Gone. Destroyed. Forgotten.

Others say the opposite: we’re locked away because there’s something wrong with us. If we roamed the outside world, we might taint the beautiful ones. A species so pure, that to merely be in their presence is a gift.

As for my beliefs…I’m not sure.

But I do know one thing: neither of those reasons explains why it is that they come for us only after we’ve passed the age of sixteen. Whether we want to go or not, we’re taken through those iron gates. Escorted away from the only home we’ve ever known, escorted to our destiny—whatever that destiny may be—never to be seen again.

The Beautiful Ones is a prequel intended to introduce Lori’s newest Young Adult series. At around 21,000 words, this is a short story. This Young Adult Romance contains kissing, cursing and some violence. It is best for ages 14 and up.

8-Banded (Banded 1) by Logan Byrne

This is the first of the three book series. The prequel, book #0.5, takes place before this book and is out now for free! The box set is also out now!

In dystopian Manhattan, society is divided into six zones, with each one representing a citizen’s benefit to society: Stalwart (strength), Astute (intelligence), Collusive (greed), Radiant (beauty), Quixotic (no life direction), and the Altruistic (willingness to help others).  On a citizen’s sixteenth birthday, a computer suggests a new zone for them based on their inherent benefit to society.  When Kalenna Slater is sorted out of her home zone Quixotic and into Altruistic, she thinks things can’t get worse.  Life looks dismal until she meets Gavin, a boy also just sorted into Altruistic who becomes the light needed on her cloudy days.

During sorting she receives a device known as ‘The Band’.  It’s a large watch-like device that never comes off, and it measures a citizen’s karma on a scale from one to one hundred.  If a citizen does good, they gain points.  If a citizen does bad, including breaking laws, they lose points.  When your number reaches zero, the band acts as judge, jury, and executioner, and you are injected with toxins that kill you within minutes.

After sorting, recruits are taken to a three month long mandatory school named HQ.  It’s at HQ she meets new friends from different zones, and finally begins to feel at ease.  Everything goes well until a rare trip home makes her discover that her father, who has been missing for a decade, may have taken part in a terrible program that stands to shake the fabric of society.

This is the first book of three, with the prequel and epilogue novellas out now! This dystopian series has suspense, action and adventure, and romance that will be sure to leave you smiling!

9- Elite (Citizen Saga, Book 1): A Dystopian Romantic Suspense Series by Nicola Claire

Have you been a model Citizen today?

Selena Carstairs has been raised an Elite. She lives the life of privileged luxury, never wanting for anything. Respected. Admired. Honoured.

But life is not what it seems…

The island of Wánměi has a strict set of rules. Be a model Citizen and all will be rewarded. Disobey the law and the consequences are dire. For Selena, the urge to defy is in her blood. Out of boredom? Or something else? But she never knew just what penalty she’d have to pay for her latest stunt.

Trent Masters is a Citizen, born and bred. The leader of a small group of revolutionaries desperately trying to free their beloved city of Wánměi. He knows a world exists beyond the island’s borders. He knows a life exists without the heavy handed manipulation and tight fisted control of those in charge.

What he didn’t know was that an Elite would have more chance of challenging the Overseers who control Wánměi than a rebel ever could. And he certainly wasn’t expecting her to capture his heart as stealthily as she moves under the darkness of a hot and humid night.

Citizen versus Elite. The battle has begun.

10- Phoenix: a new adult dystopian romance: Theta Waves apocalypse series episode 1 by Thea Atkinson

She has the power to change the world; he was born to destroy it.

Drug-addicted Theda has a unique gift that might have been useful in a world that believed in something. Not in New Earth. Using her gift now that the god has come and gone is the one thing punishable by death, and Theda isn’t the kind of girl to take too many chances. There are just two things that matter to her: tricking out her gift so she can eat, and blissing out on her drug of choice so she can forget the past–not exactly in that order.

Her craving for a fix gets her into deadly trouble when a rugged bounty hunter as damaged as she is discovers her secret. Now she must find a way to shake her addiction if she is to trust the very handsome and tortured hero who ends up saving her from certain execution.

Sick and jonesing, one question still nags at her: what terrible secret forced him to save her?

The Love Series by @kristend732 #books #dystopian #amreading

I love a good series, especially when it’s dystopian with a dash of romance. The lovely K. D. Ferguson has an incredible gift for storytelling and I think you’ll love these books as much as I do. Even if you aren’t a fan of young adult, the story will hook you. I have all three and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into them (review coming this September). MRS N

Book 2 Excerpt:

He took my hands and stared at me with his emerald eyes.  “I promise I won’t ever put you through that again.  I was an ass.  I was selfish.  I’ve changed.  You are what I want.”  He looked around my place.  “This is what I want.”

God, I wanted to believe him, but I was so uncertain.  I’d been down this road with him before and we didn’t have the best experience. He’d broken me so badly, but I guess I had no other choice but to let him fix me.

“I can’t go through that again, Braiden.”

“Do you still love me?”

Like he needed to ask.  “I never stopped.”

“I was so stupid.  I love you.  It took being without you to realize that.  I want you, and only you, forever.”

My heart was begging me to believe him while my mind still had reservations.  “Please stay true to your word.”

“I promise.”  He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and pulled me close to him.  I wanted to stay like that forever.  He was my home.  I felt safe even though I probably wasn’t.  I wasn’t happy but I was certain that wouldn’t last. And I felt loved even though that most likely wasn’t true.
