Title: The Du Lac Devil (Book 2 of The Du Lac Chronicles)

Author: Mary Anne Yarde

Genre: Historical Fantasy

Book Blurb:

The Award-Winning series ~ The Du Lac Chronicles, continues:

War is coming to Saxon Briton.

As one kingdom after another falls to the savage might of the High King, Cerdic of Wessex, only one family dares to stand up to him — The Du Lacs.

Budic and Alden Du Lac are barely speaking to each other, and Merton is a mercenary, fighting for the highest bidder. If Wessex hears of the brothers’ discord, then all is lost.

Fate brings Merton du Lac back to the ancestral lands of his forefathers, and he finds his country on the brink of civil war. But there is worse to come, for his father’s old enemy has infiltrated the court of Benwick. Now, more than ever, the Du Lac must come together to save the kingdom and themselves.

Can old rivalries and resentments be overcome in time to stop a war?

“I didn’t mean to offend,” the monk said with compassion. “I simply wanted you to have this,” he handed the crucifix to Merton. “There is always a way back. Remember, Jesus looks for the lost sheep, not the ones who are all ready part of the congregation.”

Merton took the cross and rubbed his fingers lightly over the rough wood. “Thank you,” he said, raising his eyes to look at the boy. It was unusual for a man of the cloth to speak to him, they all feared the demon inside him would jump out and devour them whole. “What’s your name?”

“Sampson,” the boy replied instantly. “It is never too late to repent,” he continued, unperturbed at speaking to one who was so actively shunned. “Forgiveness is given to those who seek it.”

Merton looked back towards his brother. Budic had slumped in the chair, his head in his hands. Merton’s grey eyes clashed with Josephine’s blue ones, and the memory of a past love swept over him. He made himself look away. Some things were better forgotten. “Maybe Jesus should concentrate on the sheep that willingly follow him and leave the rest of us to the wolves.” He handed the crucifix back. “I don’t want it,” he added quietly.

The boy shook his head in disagreement. “You don’t understand. I can rid you of the demon inside. I know how to make them leave your body,” he spoke with confidence, his eyes sparkling with determination.

“Practice your skills on someone else,” Merton replied. “But thank you for the offer,” he added when he saw the disappointment in the boy’s eyes. “I do not deserve or want absolution.”

“We need to go, come on,” Alden stated, it was bad enough hearing the rumours of what Merton had become, he would not stand and listen to his brother condemn himself as well.

The boy watched them leave.

“There are some demons that are too powerful, even for you,” the Abbot said, placing his hand on the boy’s thin shoulder. “Stay away from Merton du Lac.”

“He needs my help,” the monk argued. “I thought it was our responsibility to bring the word of God to everyone, regardless of what they have done. Does that not apply to him?”

“He knows the word of God, but he has chosen to ignore it and now we must ignore him. You can not save everyone.” The Abbot squeezed his shoulder and then walked back towards the coffin.

“I will save you, Merton du Lac,” Sampson whispered the promise. “As God is my witness, I will.”

Title   Storm Crazy

Author Livia Quinn

Genre  Paranormal Urban Fantasy

Book Blurb

Welcome to Destiny, or should I say Middle Earth…

I’m Sheriff Jack Lang. After an exciting career as a Navy pilot, Destiny seemed like the perfect place to settle down – safe, sane and secure. But that ship sailed when I met Tempest Pomeroy – sexy redheaded mail lady and trouble magnet. Tempe never fails to test the limits of my patience or the law. Every time I think it’s the last straw, up pops another haystack.

My name is Tempest Pomeroy, and my human job is delivering the mail. I’m also a Paramortal like my family, or I’m supposed to be. If I didn’t have a few little talents, I’d think I was adopted. To say I was having a bad day would be like saying Katrina dropped a little rain on New Orleans. My brother’s genie bottle is missing, my mother’s AWOL, and the sheriff and my ex-lover are squaring off like yard dogs staking a claim over a poodle. I am no one’s poodle. I’ve denied my heritage for most of my life but all this chaos is a sign of my quickening Tempestaerie power.

Oh, and the sheriff? He thinks he’s settled in a normal, quaint small town—like Mayberry?! We’ll see how that turns out… Things better settle down soon, ‘cause I’m about to go Storm Crazy.

I installed Pomeroy in the empty jail cell but didn’t lock it, although I was tempted to see if she’d try her hand-me-down skills on one of my locks. Pulling a case file from the desk drawer I remembered I’d promised to call Jordie.

“Where’s Tempe?”

The voice sounded like it belonged on a classic western, laced with tequila and cigarettes. I turned to face a tall man dressed in black. I could almost hear the cheesy “Good, Bad, and Ornery” music in the background. His name would have been Diablo.

I hadn’t even heard the door open. I thought of the covert operatives I’d met while serving in the Mideast. Intimidating, with his wet slicked black hair, dark eyes and stubbled jaw—this man would be hazardous to your health. His face held no expression, hands hanging loose at his sides, but I recognized a seasoned warrior when I saw one. Battle-ready.

“Who’s asking?”

“Dylan McGuinness, Special Investigator.” He pulled his black leather jacket aside to expose his badge.

What was he to Tempe? I wondered, as I pointed to the chair by the door. “Have a seat.”

He hesitated for a minute then, after taking stock of his surroundings, lowered himself onto the chair. Spring-loaded… dangerous… and proprietary were my impressions.

“What is your relationship with Tempest Pomeroy?” I asked and was blindsided by an irrational stab of… jealousy?

His lip quirked in tandem with an eyebrow. “What’s it to you? I’m here on official business, Sheriff…” he eyed the name plate on the desk, “…Lang.” I didn’t know the man but felt an instinctive dislike and distrust. What was his association with Tempe?

“State your business then—McGuinness, was it?”

I wasn’t sure how it happened, but we seemed to be in some kind of pissing contest. “Ms. Pomeroy didn’t have a phone call so how did you know she was here?”

“Why didn’t she get a phone call, if you’ve arrested her?” His thumb and index finger rubbed his whiskered chin and it wasn’t lost on me that he hadn’t answered my question.

I was feeling a perverse sense of non-cooperation. I didn’t just not want to answer. I wanted to have it out with Diablo…take it outside, so to speak. Where was that coming from? Talk about irrational. And I prided myself on my rationality. I regrouped.

“She’s not exactly arrested—yet. I’m still thinking on it.”

McGuinness’ narrowed eyes failed to conceal the workings of his quick lethal mind, and if I guessed correctly, a fondness for my prisoner. Her comment about misplaced trust came to mind, and I felt myself bristle. I made fists under the table trying to push down the ugly green emotions roiling up inside me. Once again, I had nothing to go on, but my instincts were screaming in his presence.

“So, what do I have to do to spring her?”

“Depends. If you can keep her away from my crime scene, I’m tempted to let you have her,” I said, with implied double meaning.

He nodded. “I might be able to handle that. She has a sit-to with her boss in less than an hour, and if she doesn’t end up suspended, she’ll be busy working all day. I have to get a couple statements from her this evening or tomorrow.”

I winced as I remembered her comment about being fired over picking up Jordie. “How well do you know her?”

McGuinness’ head tilted, and he hesitated before answering. One black eyebrow arched, he asked, “What’s it to you?”

Ah, there it was.

“Just curious if you know her brother, River.”

He nodded. Contemplating again. This guy wasn’t one to run off at the mouth.

“I know River.” He inhaled, his shoulders relaxing finally. “I talked to Tempe earlier; she was concerned about him.”

Oh, she did, did she? “Why talk to you?”

“I guess she thought I might be able to help.”

“Again, why you? Why not the cops, her mother?”

“I was a friend of the family.”

“Was a friend?”

“Am a friend.” McGuinness’ head tilted again, elbow on my desk. One big fist came up to casually prop up his chin. “Sheriff, is this going somewhere? Should I be calling a lawyer?” The man didn’t rattle.

“You know about the body we found at the clubhouse.” It wasn’t a question. I got the feeling he knew a lot more about this whole situation than I did.

“I was in touch with her because of UM’s involvement and an ongoing investigation that happened prior to this incident. When I talked to her, she was upset that River hadn’t shown up on his job site, yesterday morning.”

“So her concern about her brother has something to do with this stolen amphora?”

Oh, he was good. There was just the slightest flash of—alarm? Recognition? It was gone so quickly I wondered if I’d imagined it.

“His amphora probably went missing about the same time he was last seen.”

I would come out better questioning the unskilled liar in my cell than this P.I. But even pros slip up now and then. He’d known when River was last seen.

“When was that?” I asked.

“The contractor said his man saw him Sunday night at the Wasted Turtle.”

“Well, he’s probably sleeping it off somewhere, then.”

“Apparently you’ve never met River.”

There was another space in time where we marked our proverbial territories, then I made sure he knew I had his number. “Work undercover much, McGuinness?”

Hard Days Knight web NEW final 03302016 copy

Title      Hard Days Knight

Author    Livia Quinn

Genre     Contemporary Military Romance

Book Blurb

Is he a real hero, or just a pretender?

Ex-Navy officer Luc Larue knows how it looks when the sexy cop and her partner respond to a silent alarm at the grocery where he stopped for a six-pack. Luc’s job with KPI requires certain…attire and equipment.

The tall, dark and deadly looking mercenary Delilah Burke confronts at the robbery scene is sexy as sin, but is he a hero or a conman?

Each day reveals more to Del of the enigma that is Luc Larue. The guy is pure gold, perhaps too good to be true. Then, trouble arrives from his past and Del is faced with a choice. Will she believe the evidence against Luc, or trust her heart?

“Was there something else you needed… Mr. Larue?”

He chuckled easily. “Yes, actually… Officer Burke.”

His eyes were on her chest and when Del looked down she realized he hadn’t been admiring her bust—darn—but looking at her badge. Her brows furrowed.

“Sorry, I was looking for your rank, Off—may I call you Del?”

Delilah started to protest but really, what was the point? He wasn’t a suspect, and he seemed like an okay guy—Navy reservist, gainfully employed, heroic citizen and all. She put the whole sense of “wrongness” yesterday down to the oddities of the circumstances and his attire. That gave her the slightest pause, because she was known for her instincts and she’d been wrong about him. Oh, come on, Del, you were doing your job, covering the bases.

She didn’t really want to encourage someone who’d been a suspect for even those few seconds,  but he was way too easy to like, and she was getting those boy-howdy-would-we-like-to-jump-his-bones urges out of a rarely heard from region below her gun belt. She sent the little miscreants a Now-is-not-the-time message. They ignored her as well, whining when Luc placed one hip on the corner of her desk, allowing her to catch an enticing whiff of his scent, mingled with some kind of musky after shave. An image of him standing in front of his mirror with a towel wrapped around his waist as he applied that after shave… earth to Burke. Earth to Burke! The man is speaking.

She shrugged. Why not?

“I have a proposition for you.” Ha. Now they’d stopped whining and were fist pumping, yes!

No, she thought, gritting her teeth.

“Wait, you haven’t heard me out,” he said, frowning.

Great, she’d spoken out loud. “I’m sorry, I was…had my mind on something else.” Like the way he filled out that t-shirt. The cut of his torso, the way those muscles bunched at the slightest of movements, how that gleaming black hair would feel in her hands.

“Hear me out, please. I need a female officer for a BE day.”

Oh, right, some kind of kinky sex game where he’d “be” the bad “Merc” and she’d “be” the one with the handcuffs.

He smiled, watching her thoughts move across her features as that scene presented itself.  “Officer, you’ve got a dirty mind.”

She wasn’t usually so readable. She scowled at him. “Larue, I don’t have all day.”

“Luc,” he reminded. “Okay, I’m serious. There’s a group of kids I’m presenting a program to Saturday afternoon. My expert for Saturday had to back out due to his wife going into labor early with twins.”

“You’re not by any chance talking about Detective Dunbar?”

“Yeah. So you know Tony. He’s done it for me the last couple of times. He’s always a hit with the young ladies.”

“He would be.” Tony Dunbar was an Italian charmer with five daughters and six sisters. “He’s charmed some of the most intractable suspects into confessing. What exactly is it, Larue?”

“Saturday is what we call BE day at LTF—that’s  Larue Teens Forward, the old gym turned teen center.” Del had heard of the teen center, and, she couldn’t help it—the report about possible deviant behavior at the martial arts studio crept into her mind.

“It’s a pretty big deal. Some of the kids bring friends who are interested in seeing what the group is about. We have experts in different fields in weekend clothing answering questions about what they do.”

“Kind of like a career day?”

“Like that, but many of these kids were cast aside, expelled or otherwise fell through the cracks of society. We work to bring them back on their own terms into a stable and safe environment through mentoring.”

Damn, if she didn’t watch it, she’d fall for this guy. And he was so not her type. They were at it again, aww, yes he is, he’s-our-type—Del ignored them. “So what would I do? I don’t have much psychology o—”

“No, no. Just show up in your weekend clothes and if someone wants to know more about what you do or why you became a cop, you just share your story, answer questions about the job, and maybe steer someone away from some of those misconceptions or negative stereotypes about law enforcement. I think it will be good to have a lady cop. Get the young men asking questions for a change.” He grinned.

Please nothing from the spectators. She was having enough trouble resisting this guy’s potent charm. Was it a façade or was he the real thing?

“I don’t know.” She wanted to do a bit more research into those reports in his file.

“Hey, I understand if you have plans. Why don’t you talk to Tony and let me know tomorrow. If you’re going to ditch on me I have to find somebody else.” He handed her another card.

“I’ll think about it,” Del said.

“I’d appreciate it if you’d more than think about it. Talk to Tony.”

After he’d gone she flipped his card around with her fingers. It read, Larue Enterprises and his logo was, “Challenge, as necessary as the air we breathe.”

The man had to have a triple load of testosterone. With that background and a job in private security he’d probably turn out to be an overbearing chauvinist with violent authoritarian tendencies. She’d be crazy to get any more involved with him.

She hit the intercom. “Gail, get me Tony Dunbar’s cell.”

It wouldn’t be the first time she did something crazy.

Book Blurb

“An evocative, timeless saga of love and betrayal, it has rivalry and treachery enough for any ‘Game of Thrones’ aficionado.” Tony Riches, author of The Tudor Trilogy

“It is dangerous to become attached to a du Lac. He will break your heart, and you will not recover.” So prophesies a wizened healer to Annis, daughter of King Cerdic of Wessex. If there is truth in the old crone’s words, they come far too late for Annis, who defies father, king, and country to save the man she loves.

Alden du Lac, once king of Cerniw, has nothing. Betrayed by Cerdic, Alden’s kingdom lies in rubble, his fort razed to the ground and his brother Merton missing, presumably dead. He has only one possession left worth saving: his heart. And to the horror of his few remaining allies, he gives that to the daughter of his enemy. They see Annis, at best, as a bargaining chip to avoid war with her powerful father. At worst, they see a Saxon whore with her claws in a broken, wounded king.

Alden has one hope: When you war with one du Lac, you war with them all. His brother Budic, King of Brittany, could offer the deposed young king sanctuary—but whether he will offer the same courtesy to Annis is far less certain.

“I just need to stop for a few moments.” Alden lifted his arm off Annis’s shoulder and leant against the wall. He was sweating profusely, the salt of his sweat stinging his wounds and his eyes. He honestly didn’t know how much longer he could keep this up. At least David had been right about the soldier’s barracks. It was empty. There was no way he could have fought anyone feeling like he did now.

He had always felt that he was fated to die young, but he had hoped he would at least make it to twenty ¾ so much for hope.

The acute pain passed, and he took a moment to watch Annis. He saw the way she rolled her shoulders, how she moved the heavy torch to her other hand. She must be exhausted, yet she didn’t complain. Her hair was damp and it had curled into soft ringlets. He reached forward and touched one of her wayward curls. The curl wound its way around his finger and he felt the softness of her hair. It was beautiful. The pain must be making him delirious, for he had the strongest urge to pull her closer, to learn the taste of her lips, to feel her body against his. He lowered his hand and closed his eyes, willing away the temptation.

“Thank you for not leaving me behind,” Annis said, her voice coming out a little breathless. She had not dared to move as Alden played with her hair. She knew it was not the proper thing to allow a man to touch her, but she could not bring herself to stop him. In fact, she wanted more than a gentle fondling of her hair, although what her body yearned for she did not really understand. All she knew was that he made her feel flustered and hot, excited and nervous, all at the same time. Her knuckles still tingled where his lips had brushed against them earlier, and she wondered if they would ever feel the same again.

“I will keep you safe.” He found himself promising the most ridiculous thing. He couldn’t defend himself at this moment in time, let alone her.

“I just want you to live,” Annis answered. “Thank you for what happened with David. I don’t know what would have happened if I had been left down there.”

“I wouldn’t have left you there and nor would have David. He would have worried that you would drink his wine,” Alden said solemnly.

Annis smiled softly at his teasing. “I thought about it! How long have you known him?”

“A long time.”

“How long?”

“Long enough.” Alden smiled.

“Has anyone ever told you that you are infuriating?” Annis asked.

Alden’s smile widened. “It has been mentioned.” Another wave of pain washed over him and he closed his eyes.

“Keep breathing.”

He had held his breath again; he hadn’t realised. He felt Annis’s hand on his arm and he breathed deeply of the stale, rodent-filled air. When the pain passed, she let go of his arm and stepped back.

He watched her as she looked away from him. She raised the torch so she could see a little farther down the tunnel, which looked remarkably similar to what they had just walked down. They could be walking in circles for all they knew.

For a moment neither said anything and then after a long awkward pause, Alden said, “David’s father was my father’s groom, here in Briton. David was only a boy when Arthur fell to your father’s sword. Cerdic slaughtered David’s mother and his two older brothers, but he enslaved David and his father. His father continued to spy for us and then when he died, David took over the role. That was also when David turned to drink. He didn’t handle his grief very well.”

“My father has ruined so many lives.”

“Well, he did one thing right,” Alden allowed.

“He had you.”

Annis blushed at his words and she couldn’t hold his gaze. “We should really try and keep walking,” she said, raising her face to catch his eyes before lowering her gaze again.

He moved himself off the wall and put his arm around her shoulder. “It wasn’t luck that saved me. It was you. I asked you before, but you didn’t answer. Why did you do it?”

“You wouldn’t understand,” she mumbled in embarrassment.

“You would be surprised by what I can understand.” He tried to keep his voice conversational and light, for he saw the way her body had tensed.

She turned slowly back around and looked at him. “I did not want to see you lose your head.” She quickly looked away from him, so that he would not see her face and she would not have to look into those all-knowing eyes. How could she possibly reveal what she felt for him?

“And why would that matter to you if I did?” He challenged softly. “I am nothing to you, Annis, but another player in the dangerous game of kingship and power.”

“I apologise for saving you,” Annis said, annoyed with him for questioning her about something she could not explain without humiliating herself.

“I’m not implying I am ungrateful. I just want to know the truth. I’m having a little issue with trust at the moment.”

She stopped and sighed heavily. She could tell him part of the truth; there would be no harm in that. “My father has arranged for me to be married,” she stated.

Here’s what readers have to say about it:

“I loved it. I had no idea just how short short would be when I started it, but what a lovely tale to teach & inspire! I feel strongly a connection being made always holds the best potential to calm, comfort & nourish, to move & inspire hope, to insight change or instill lessons. And for me, I feel any kind of travel…time travel, dimension travel (I’m a big fan of the Twilight Zone!), or even a story with a “real” trip involved always helps to create that connection somehow. It was THAT quick…& true…once Juliet felt a connection to Noko…it was a done deal! So beautiful. The story simple…& short…yet so powerful.” ~ Tia Shurina

“Noko’s plight is very real. I am glad to see this kind of story that can be used in the classroom to share a very real problem.” ~ Becky Villareal

“A short but highly emotive story that makes me wish this sort of thing could really happen to snap many of us out of our comfortable complacency.
When you really think about it, it’s always the smallest person, or in this case, village, that gets left out.” ~ Chris Graham (otherwise known as Chris the Story Reading Ape)

This is an inspiring story of giving to others unselfishly. A high school girl, Juliet, while in her school classroom has a vision. Her teacher is talking about a young boy and the severe problems in his village. During this vision Juliet meets this young boy, Noko, who takes her to his village to show Juliet how he lives. Juliet is so shocked by what she sees that she announces in class that she will donate to the boy’s cause to bring water to his village. The other students join in because of her enthusiasm.

A lovely tale that touches the heart and brings tears to the eyes! I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed this short story.” ~ Janice Spina

A Note from N. N. Light:

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reading our stories and supporting us. We’re so grateful and our hearts are overflowing with gratitude.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!!!

The chatter around us quieted suddenly. Montana and Jack looked over my shoulder.

Montana hissed behind me, a sound I’d never heard from her. “Mother of all the gods! Who is that?”

We turned as the elder at the door called out, “Conor de Sept-Flambe, Knight of his Majesty’s realm.”

Jack stiffened and muttered, “Which Majesty?”

“What realm?” I wondered aloud.

“Where’d he get those damn swords?” breathed Montana behind me. Leave it to a warrior goddess to appreciate and hone in on the most obvious feature of the newcomer’s costume.

The—it seemed lacking somehow to call him a man though he appeared to be, but I could see why both of them had reacted to the stranger.

He wore a beautiful black and red mask, which was slightly reptilian in design, strapped around his shoulder length black hair. He was shirtless and radiated danger with intricate red and black tattoos that resembled bat wings across his shoulders and triceps. He didn’t need a costume t-shirt with abs painted on it. The ridges of his torso indicated strength and discipline. Matching leather strips banded his bulging biceps and matched the jagged hemmed samurai pants floating about his muscular calves.

“Looks like someone left their video game on too long,” said Jack.

The Knight Flambe did indeed look like he’d walked straight from the Martial Arts/Samurai Assassin video game into the Grand Ball. His boots were exquisitely tooled silver and bronze, with a belt of the same metals, which glimmered flat against his lower abdomen. When he turned to hand his invitation to the elder there was a collective murmur and Jack made a low guttural sound.

Two long deadly looking gold and silver swords crisscrossed his back and seemed to shoot fire with each movement down their jagged twisting length. As he listened to the announcement, the knight’s hands, girded at the wrist in pewter, bronze and gold to the elbows, fisted and relaxed, making the tendons flex from elbow to chest. Whew!

Montana stood like a statue of a Valkyrie, her hands clenching and unclenching, piercing cobalt eyes locked on the figure dressed in precious metals, leather and a lot of bronzed skin. Menori reacted restlessly to the dark knight.

So did Jack. It was as if they were meeting as equals on some arena of war—not as I’d described him and Dylan—like dogs fighting over their Poodle. This was something elemental, as if they knew each other at their core. It lasted mere seconds but it was as if time during those few seconds amplified, expanded to push away all other sounds and only those of us who saw, felt, and understood, well, I didn’t understand except to know that something of impetus had passed between them.

Party sounds filtered in again from the other room and the Knight Flambe’ took three deliberate steps off the platform, glancing toward Montana and away. His sharp predatory gaze met each attendee briefly, making each person acknowledge his presence, like he was studying them one by one and simultaneously erasing himself from their minds. I shook my head. We’d had our share of supernaturals, but this powerful looking ‘soldier’, a sexy sword-wielding samurai warrior… it was a first.

The newcomer bowed and walked deliberately through the crowd, which parted like the Red Sea for the Israelites, to give him and his swords an unencumbered path to the bar. Montana devoured him with her eyes. She had not moved since he walked in the door. Interesting.

“Reckon that’s a costume? Or is he some kind of knight in shining armor?” I asked.

Jack said, “He doesn’t seem the type.”

A Cutthroat Business: #1 (Savannah Martin Mysteries) by Jenna Bennett

Rafe Collier is six feet three inches of testosterone and trouble; tall, dark, and dangerous, with a murky past and no future—not the kind of guy a perfect Southern Belle should want to tangle with. In any way. But wherever Savannah turns, there he is, and making no bones about what he wants from her.

Now Savannah must figure out who killed real estate queen Brenda Puckett, make a success of her new career, and avoid getting killed—or kissed—by Rafe, all before the money in her savings account runs out and she has to go back to selling make-up at the mall.

Abducted: Alien Mate Index Book 1 by @EvangelineA #Books #Romance #ScienceFiction

Title: Abducted: Alien Mate Index Book 1

Author : Evangeline Anderson

Genre: Alien Warrior BBW Science Fiction Paranormal Romance

Book Blurb:

My name is Zoe McKinley. I have a boring life, an awful job, and a boss that throws staplers at my head. What could be worse?

How about being abducted by Aliens?

Being dragged through a mirror, naked and screaming, onto an extraterrestrial ship was bad. Finding out I had been sold to a huge alien male who looks like the Devil was worse. But learning he wanted to trade me to an intergalactic petting zoo was the worst of all!

Now I’m whizzing through the galaxy with a robot butler, a trio of nib-nibs (they’re like tiny green monkeys) and one huge, muscular, and very grumpy alien. The clothing they gave me shows all my lady-bits, the food-sim makes banana cream pie that tastes like sauerkraut, and Sarden, my captor, is too hot to stay mad at, even if he is a jerk.

In fact, I think I might be falling for him.

What’s a girl to do? It’s all in a day’s work when you’ve been…Abducted.

“Who said anything about your talent affecting you, Zoe- It’s the way in which you affect others that makes you so damn special.-.jpg

***Abducted is Book 1 in my Alien Mate Index series.
It is a plus-sized novel–140,000 words long***

It’s a new series, in a new world…

Learn more about The Alien Mate Index…

AMI logo 2
From the pen of Evangeline Anderson, the writer who brought you Brides of the Kindred, comes a new race of Alien warriors…twelve races, to be exact.

Everyone thinks that life just evolved on Earth—
Our planet, and twelve others, all capable of supporting Terran life, was seeded by the Ancient Ones.
Then Earth was locked away, kept safe in the cocoon of our ozone layer. But now there’s a gaping hole in our security blanket and guess who’s coming to dinner?
That’s right—the Alien warriors of the Twelve Peoples—also descended from the Ancient Ones, are looking for mates and Earth girls are their first choice.

The Vorn are feared throughout the galaxy. Savage, horned warriors, these males can be surprisingly gentle to the females they choose to bond with.
Denarins come in pairs—two muscular males who share a psychic bond… and feel the need to share one woman as well.
The Majorans worship their females as goddesses, the very color of their skin changing with their bonded mate’s mood.
Braxians are savage with black-on-white eyes that can see every spectrum of light. They will defend their females to the last drop of blood in their huge, blue bodies.

And there are more…so many more Alien warriors to pick from.
Which type of male would you choose?
Too bad you won’t have a choice, because thanks to the Alien Mate Index, an agency that abducts Earth brides for alien males, you could be snatched at any time and turned into a massive warrior’s mate or concubine.
So the real question is—who will choose you?

The alien face looked at me speculatively. It was male—that much was clear. Strong features and gold eyes with vertical pupils like a cat’s stared back at me. He had cheekbones sharp enough to cut yourself on and a nose that looked like it had been broken at least once. A neatly clipped mustache and goatee framed sensual lips that looked cruelly amused. He had dark red skin—almost maroon—I could see a lot of that because he appeared to be wearing a black, wife-beater type t-shirt that left his muscular arms bare.

Actually, except for the cat eyes and red skin, he looked strangely human. Well, except for the horns.

Did I mention he had freaking horns?

Because he did—little short, sharp pointed ones, growing out either side of his forehead—right at his temples.

I stared at them, dumbfounded, unable to speak for a moment. And that’s unusual for me because I’m almost always shooting off my mouth.

All I could think was, the Devil. Oh my God, the freaking Devil was staring at me from the mirror of the handicapped bathroom at Lauder, Lauder and Associates and I had no idea what to do.

My mind started going over all the things I’d done wrong recently. Okay, I might have fudged a little on my taxes. Using my laptop to check reports while I lay on the couch watching Sherlock reruns on Netflix counts as having a home office—right? And then there was the time I accidentally shoplifted a pair of socks. I forgot I had them in my hand and walked right out of the store with them. And then I was too embarrassed to bring them back so I guess I basically stole them but I didn’t mean to so—

Suddenly, the Devil spoke, ending my train of thought as thoroughly as though it had run into the side of a mountain.

“Yes,” he said in a deep, growling voice. “She is the one.”

The one for what? The one to drag straight down to Hell and poke in the ass with a fiery pitchfork? Oh my God, was cheating on my taxes and shoplifting socks that bad?

“I…I’m sorry,” I stuttered but just then another voice—a piping, high voice like a Disney animal—answered him.

“If you are certain this female is the one Your Eminence requires, than I shall begin the transport at once.”

Transport? What Transport? Instinctively, I began backing away from the haunted mirror to Hell but then the swirling started again. And this time there was a wind that went with it.

A sucking, howling wind that dragged at me, pulling me towards the mirror.

“Help!” I screamed, or tried to scream, anyway. My voice was lost in the vortex as I was pulled closer and closer to the mirror.

My feet left the floor and I put out my hands, trying to stop my forward momentum. My phone clattered into the sink and I could hear Leah and Charlotte shouting on the other end of it but their voices seemed tiny and distant.

My hand connected to the mirror…and sank into it. I gasped in fear as I saw first my hand and then my whole arm swallowed up in the swirling psychedelic colors. My other hand and arm followed and suddenly the mirror was right in front of my face.

And then I felt myself getting sucked in completely. Lauder, Lauder and Associates disappeared and the last thing I heard was my two best friends frantically screaming my name.

Who knew the gateway to Hell was located in the employees’ bathroom?

Chasing Charlie: A Romantic Comedy (The Texas Two-Step Series Book 1) by Kathy Carmichael

The Texas Two-Step romantic comedy series is a reader favorite. All of the stories in the series are sweet, charming and emotional contemporary romance. Each story in the series stands alone, but all Texas Two-Step novels and novellas feature love stories about members of the Nelson, Murphy or Palmer families — and sometimes, more than one!

Book Description:

Raised in a family of rodeo champions on a South Texas cattle ranch, Charlie wants only one thing: to avoid thrill-seeking cowboys.

Davis Murphy, cowboy wannabe and one of Dallas’s most eligible bachelors, needs a pretty and witty faux fiancée so his widowed mother will marry her longtime gentleman friend. Charlie, his local librarian, seems the prefect choice.

Charlie’s first reaction is to run, but she’s promised herself to step out of her plain-jane routine. When Charlie accepts, Davis’s plan is set. But now Charlie’s sweet ways are challenging his bachelor heart.

Thirsty for water teaser

Here’s what readers have to say about it:

“Shane, look at me,” he ordered. When she didn’t, he grabbed her shoulders and pulled her close. “Look at me!”

Reluctantly, she allowed herself to meet those deep mint green eyes that radiated animal attraction. Her body shuddered in pure lust at the thought of entwining in hot passionate lovemaking with this glorious man. She clutched the counter behind her tighter to hold on to the little shred of sanity left in her body.

Shane forced her eyes to keep his gaze locked with hers. “You’re my boss,” she said, grasping at reason and reality. This was not the man she was used to or the man Rachel had described.

“Damn professionalism, Shane. I don’t want to be your boss right now!”

Not knowing if she should be ecstatic or delirious, Shane still tried to be rational. “You want to fire me?”

He shook her shoulders slightly. “Have you been listening to anything I’ve been saying?”

“I’ve been doing nothing but listening! You’ve been making no sense at all! You change the rules, you act evasively, and you expect me to read your-”

Shane didn’t finish that sentence. Matter of fact, whatever she had been thinking had completely gone into a black hole which had suddenly opened up in her brain. That’s because his hot mouth overwhelmed her own, knocking whatever she had been saying or thinking completely out of her body.

She wasn’t sure how long the kiss lasted, but she was damn sure her mouth had been opened the entire time. His incredibly long tongue had almost licked her tonsils.

Shaking her head to force herself back to reality and breaking the kiss, she said, “I can’t do this, Andrew.” She was close to panicking.

“Do what, Shane?” he asked now rather calmly. The kiss had done something to him as well.

“I can’t draw the line. You’re my boss.” Pushing out of his arms, she moved around him to the front room.

He followed close behind as she started ranting hysterically. “I need this internship to graduate. My career means everything to me!”

“I know this, Shane. You don’t know how confused I was until now. Until the kiss.” He closed the distance between them looking as if he wanted another one.

She didn’t know if she could stop him if he did.

Storm Lake East and West by @LiviaQuinn: First Book #FREE! #IAN1 #MFRWAuthor #Romance

Livia Quinn’s Storm Lake East and West: First Book in each series FREE

Welcome to Storm Lake.

Imagine a world where inexplicable circumstances and high emotion conspire to bring a man and woman together.  Love happens when they least expect it, or want it, but they might as well get on board, because the die’s been cast… their fate inevitable. Whether contemporary or fantasy, that’s what we call MAGIC!

Welcome to my world, a place where anything can happen…

On the west side of Storm Lake in the middle of a super pulse of leylines lies Destiny, home to the Destiny Paramortals, a group of tempestaeries, fae, djnn, and others who are bound by an ancient pact to protect weaker species – like humans.  Unknown to the other communities outside of Destiny is the role the Paramortals have in keeping them safe.

The Destiny Paramortals series is southern urban fantasy/romance and should be read in order as it is the continuing saga of the recurring characters. In each Paramortals book, questions are answered and new ones arise but it’s romance so you know my heroes and heroines will get their happy ending…eventually.

Storm Crazy EBOOK NEW 09242014 copy

Title: Storm Crazy

Genre: Southern Urban Fantasy/ Cozy Paranormal

First in the Storm Lake West, Destiny Paramortals series. Special Price $0.00.

My name is Tempest Pomeroy, and my human job is delivering the mail in Destiny, Louisiana. I’m also a Paramortal like my family, or I’m supposed to be. If I didn’t have a few little talents, I’d think I was adopted. To say I was having a bad day would be like saying Katrina dropped a little rain on the Gulf Coast.

First, River’s amphora went missing—that’s genie bottle to you mere-mortals. Then, one of my customers had a stroke while reading me the riot act over a piece of mail, but I saved the old grouch with a zap of my Zeus juice! It was the first time I’d actually called my power on purpose, and Destiny’s hunky new sheriff almost saw me use my magic—big no-no. He showed up again when the local florist filed a complaint against me for dropping a seventy-five-pound box on his foot. Yeah, I did it, but it was kind of an accident. He put his hand where it didn’t belong, and my fingers… sorta slipped. Then, I discovered a dead body in the clubhouse and rescued my brother’s amphora from a locker, bashing it in with a Greg Norman wedge. Guess who showed up? Again. You guessed it.

Now, my brother is missing, my mother’s AWOL, and the sheriff and my ex-lover are squaring off like yard dogs staking a claim over a poodle. I am no one’s poodle. Is it any wonder I’m calling this the worst M.A.L.E day of my life?

Oh, and the sheriff? He thought he’d settled in a normal small town to raise his teenage daughter—like Mayberry?! We’ll see how that turns out… Things better settle down soon, ‘cause I’m about to go Storm Crazy.

I heard a quiet click of metal behind me, spun around and swallowed a startled gasp. I was staring into the barrel of a mean looking gun, and at the other end of that rigid grip was an even meaner looking Jack Lang, the one I hadn’t met until now, a cold-as-ice predator. His knuckles were white but his arm was steady as a granite mountain.
“Where’s…my…daughter?” he growled. One eye actually twitched as silver eyes whitened into pure frost. If he was trying to scare me, he’d succeeded.
A sound rumbled up from his chest like that of an animal. “What have you done with Jordie?”
Recognition came in a flash. I smacked my hand against my forehead. “I knew I recognized her.”
His eyes seemed to take on an angular appearance, brows winging up, but the gun never wavered.

“Woman, you’d better start talking or you’re not going to like my next move.”
Not an animal—a papa-bear.
I’m sorry.”
He gave a snarl of pain and grabbed me. “What do you mean you’re sorry?”
“I mean…” I squirmed in his bruising grip… “I’m sorry I didn’t put it together.”
He roared, “What the hell are you talking about? Where is Jor—”
“She’s at your parents’.” It finally dawned on me; he thought I’d kidnapped his daughter. Zeus’ newborn godling!
“You’re lying. I was just there.” He recoiled when I put my hand on his arm, but thankfully, he was professional enough not to pull the trigger. My guess: he was probably tempted.
“Call her,” I suggested.
He pointed his finger at me and said, “You. Don’t. Move.”
This time, I obeyed.
He eyed the amphora I clutched to my chest but said nothing. Pulling out his cell, he spoke into it, “Call. Dad.” I could tell when Jordie came on the line. His shoulders relaxed and even in the dark his eyes shone with relief.
He spoke deliberately, “We’re going to have a talk when I get there about getting into vehicles with strangers.” The word strangers was more of a snarl than a word. Then, “I know. Still goes. I lov—.”
His lids lowered briefly as a frustrated sound escaped his throat and he squeezed the phone. He lowered the gun. I thought he was leaving. Just like that. Then he spun around toward the house his face in profile, planted his hands on his hips and looked up at the sky like he was waiting for some kind of divine intervention. The whole time I watched his aura change and vent, like colored steam pouring from a teakettle.
I saw the minute he’d made his decision, his shoulders relaxed, his aura turning a cool Caribbean blue. Now that I knew he was Jordie’s father, I wasn’t as intimidated as I’d been looking down the barrel of his gun.
“You’ve done a wonderful job with Jordie, Sheriff. She’s a great kid.”
He holstered the gun with more force than necessary. “And you’re an expert on parenting, I suppose.”
Low blow. I should have expected that I guess. So much for a truce.
“I know a bit. Now, if you’ve come to arrest me, do it. Otherwise, I’ve had a hell of a day. I want a long hot bath and a cold glass of sweet tea.”
“You think you can just walk away after what you did? I ought to haul you off to jail.”
Anger flared, “I gave a teenager a ride—your teenager, an act of kindness that may put the nail in my employment coffin in the morning.”
That serpentine glare returned. I seemed to bring out his inner dragon. “You…escaped custody,” he gritted.
“Hello…” I threw up my hand. “I don’t remember being arrested, just illegally detained.” I punctuated that with a poke to his chest.
Big mistake.

Storm Lake East- At Knights Production, Inc. there are heroes on the cover.

Hard Days Knight new cover

Title: Hard Days Knight (Under-Cover Knights, book 1)

Genre: Contemporary and Military Romance

First in the Storm Lake East series. Special Price $0.00

Is he a real hero, or just a pretender?

The tall, dark and deadly looking mercenary Delilah Burke confronts at the robbery scene is sexy as sin, and apparently “saved the day”, but is anything about him real?

Ex-Navy officer Luc Larue knows how it looks when the sexy cop and her partner respond to a silent alarm at the grocery where he stopped for a six-pack after work. Luc’s job with KPI requires certain…attire, and equipment.

Once she finds out what he does for a living, and that he’s not a real hero, she probably won’t agree to see him again, much less hear his proposition.

Each day reveals more to Del of the enigma that is Luc Larue. The guy is golden, perhaps too good to be true. Then, trouble arrives from out of his past and Del is faced with a choice – does she believe the evidence against Luc, or trust her heart?

Luc ran his hand through his hair. He’d be glad when this shoot was over. He clomped down the hallway in the heavy boots to his dressing room.

“Lu-uc,” Mercy whined, “we could practice during the break.” The damn woman had followed him to the wardrobe room. Luc didn’t want the photographer thinking he couldn’t do his job. It was going to come down to embarrassing the woman—if that was even possible. Who would believe him if he said he didn’t want the attentions of a woman with Mercy’s looks and sex appeal?

Mercy’s antics were getting to him more today. And it was Delilah Burke’s fault. Delilah. Her name suited her. He’d only gotten a hint of her beauty in that uniform, but…

“Damn it, Mercy.” He’d been trying to get into the wardrobe room, but when the hall emptied she’d twined her arms around his neck from behind and pushed herself against him, rubbing his back with her hard…fake…breasts. With his cheek pressed against the door, he ran through his options.

Luc knew enough women that some might consider him an expert. He appreciated and respected them too much to ever use force against one. But Mercy Love was unlike any of the other women in his life, and he was getting desperate. She had him in an awkward position, and she knew it. If she persisted, the only way he’d be able to get her off of him was to toss her against the opposite wall. Then she’d make a scene and accuse him of using his superior strength and size to assault her. He’d heard about her from a friend over at Victor Films. She was trouble. This would be his last shoot with her if he had anything to do with it. “If you don’t leave me be…”

“Oh, shut up, Luc. You’ve been making eyes at me, rubbin’ that hard body against mine. I know you want this.” Her hand moved down to cup his groin.

He reached down and grabbed her wrist. “Enough. I mean it.”

She ignored him, grinding her pelvis against his butt. “Oooh, the big man wants me to beg. I can have you begging for it in just ten minutes. Give me a chance, please, Luc” her voice whined and her other hand roamed.

The bitch was too much. “I’m. Not. Interested.” He spun her around and crossed his arms over her chest, his only option, but a big mistake.  Now his groin was taking the abuse, and much as he was becoming disgusted with himself, he was aware that only a dead man would be able to remain unaffected by her thrusts. He was stronger than her, though. He should be able to end this somehow.

“Uh, excuse me. Do you know where I might find Luc Larue?”

Luc stilled but Mercy was good on the fly. She jerked a hand free and then it was in his hair. “Luc, honey. I know you want me bad, but a ten-minute break just isn’t enough time to do a girl justice. Let me go freshen up and we’ll take this up after the shoot.”

Luc released her wrist and all five-nine of lusciousness slithered away. Like a snake in Regency clothing.

Delilah Burke stood in the hallway in her cop uniform staring at the woman flouncing away and humming. Then she turned narrowed eyes on him.

“Well. That was certainly…”

“Shocking?” Luc asked, resigned.

“Entertaining,” she said.

“Embarrassing,” he said.

She raised one eyebrow. “I’m not embarrassed.”

Old Shadows, New Murder by @sharonmcgr #BookPromo + #Giveaway

oldshadowsnewmurder f

Title- Old Shadows, New Murder

Author – Sharon McGregor

Genre- Cozy Mystery

Book Blurb-

Taylor Armstrong returns to her hometown to bury her Aunt Grace and soon finds herself uncovering old secrets. The town seems to have an unhealthy interest in whether Taylor is staying or leaving.  Her house is broken into-twice. Unexpected visitors begin to arrive, including her long-estranged father. Taylor enlists the help of her neighbor Edie and her Jack Russell Terrier, Tristan, to find answers, but new murders put her right in the centre of the action.  Sgt. Scott of the RCMP is doing his best to keep Taylor safe when old shadows part to reveal secrets long buried, but can he succeed against a single-minded killer?

Excerpt –

She put one foot on the next rung of the ladder, trying to slow her breathing. She didn’t want to hyperventilate. She could hear them, as though through a thick door, urging her on. She took another step. She could turn around now. She could turn around and say no she wouldn’t do it. It was the only sane thing to do. But she lifted her foot to climb down one rung and it seemed it moved upwards instead, all on its own. After all, they had done it. So could she. She just had to get through this. Then they would see. Then she would show them she could do anything they could.

Chapter Three

Just before eleven the next morning Taylor opened the wood and glass door marked Donovan Law Office and walked up the creaky steps to the old fashioned office on the second floor. Melvin Donovan was waiting for her and ushered her into the office, offering her coffee which she gladly accepted and a doughnut which she refused. Somehow wiping sugar glaze from your fingers and chin didn’t seem to fit her idea of listening to a will reading.

“We’re just waiting for Edie.” he said.  Taylor must have shown her surprise because he added ,”the other beneficiary.”

She had no time to ask questions as she heard footsteps and a moment later Edie was installed in the seat beside her.

Melvin Donovan laid out the simple terms of the will. Taylor was to inherit the house and any remaining assets except for the lot with the kennel.  That was left to Edie.  There would be no problems separating the properties as the lots held their own titles.

In ten minutes or less the meeting was over and Taylor and Edie came out into the bright sunshine of an autumn day.

“Walk with me?” asked Edie.

“Of course.” Edie only lived a block away from Aunt Grace’s house. “Why don’t you come in for tea?” she asked.

As Taylor fussed about the kitchen making tea and searching for packaged cookies, Edie suggested, “Top right cupboard are macaroons.”

“You must be wondering about the will,” she said.

Thirsty for Water A Short Story

Juliet can’t wait to graduate from high school and finally move on with her life. Five more days and she’s free. She gazes out the window while her history teacher, Mrs. Johnson, drones on about war, famine and lack of water in Africa.

A gong rings, startling Juliet out of her daydream. She looks around to see if it was one of her classmates pulling a prank when a little boy carrying a spear appears. Is he a ghost or something more? He pleads for her help and before she can argue, she is transported to a small village in Africa. History comes alive like never before and Juliet must decide how she can help Noko and his village before it’s too late.

“This is an inspiring story of giving to others unselfishly.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short story.” ~Janice Spina on Goodreads

A short but highly emotive story that makes me wish this sort of thing could really happen to snap many of us out of our comfortable complacency.
When you really think about it, it’s always the smallest person, or in this case, village, that gets left out. ~The Story Reading Ape on Goodreads and Amazon

When Love Returns

Title: When Love Returns, Book 2 of the Fitzpatrick Family Series – Becca

Author: Judythe Morgan

Genre: Sweet/Inspirational Romance, Clean Reads

Book Blurb:

Becca Fitzpatrick fell in love with Ethan Wells at age five. At eight, he proposed. At seventeen, he disappeared and broke her heart.

Twelve years later, he returns with a new name – Ethan LaMotte – and a new life in Paris. He claims he’s never stopped loving her. Once upon a time, Becca believed him. Not anymore. Now family, friends, and adoring students fill her life. Plus, she has an opportunity for the job of her dreams in her small Texas hometown.

Although their lives and work are an ocean apart, Ethan won’t lose Becca another time. But, will she risk her heart again and accept this new Ethan’s proposal?

Exclusive Excerpt:

A brittle silence descended in the dining room, now empty except for the two of them. The sound of water from the kitchen faucet echoed like Niagara Falls.

Becca finished off the last of her coffee and shoved away from the table. As she lifted the saucer to take to the kitchen, Ethan spoke, “We really do need to talk. Why don’t you come out to the farm with me so we can have some privacy?” His eyes never left her face.

The cup rattled on the saucer. She set it back on the table. Panic coursed through her muscles, like a slowly advancing paralysis. Go with him to the farm where they’d spent so much time planning their future? A future that his disappearance destroyed.

She might want answers, to know where he’d been, why he hadn’t contacted her, why he’d returned, but the memories at the Wells’ farm would suffocate her. She needed a more public place.

And being alone with him? Becca wasn’t sure that would be a wise move either. She’d fallen head over heels the moment she’d met Ethan Wells in their kindergarten Sunday school class. The crush had grown through the years and they’d planned a life together after graduation. His disappearance caused a heartbreak that had never completely vanished. A heartbreak she’d never openly shared. Not even with her twin sister. She’d simply put Ethan out of her mind and moved on. Now if he was back to stay, she wasn’t sure what would happen.

“We could go out on the porch swing,” she replied. At least there, if the discussion became too intense she’d have a safety net of her family close by.

His jaw tightened ever so slightly before he stood and pushed his chair under the table. “Becca, what I have to say is for your ears only. There are too many distractions around here. Come to the farm with me. Or I’ll go to your place.”

“I live with Sarah. She and Nick plan to go back to the house to play board games with Rachel. They do that on Sunday afternoons.”

He tipped his head, acknowledging her point. “Okay then, the farm it is. I’ll bring you back here when we’re finished.”

“I’m quite capable of driving myself.”

“I’m sure you are.” He uttered a short, little laugh and headed to the front door. “Don’t take too long. I’ll be waiting.”

Becca snatched her cup and stomped into the kitchen where she pulled Sarah aside. “Ethan wants me to meet him at the farm to talk.”

“Give the guy a chance,” Nick said over his shoulder and placed a dinner plate in the dish drainer.

Sarah gave her a tight hug. “Nick’s right. Go. There may be a logical reason why Ethan never contacted you. I never understood the real reason Nick left me until he came back. Ethan could surprise you too. At least you’ll have answers.”

Becca wasn’t sure what answers she wanted or what Ethan could say to explain his disappearance. For so long, she had hoped and prayed for his return, but hope had only been a tease, preventing her from accepting the reality that he wasn’t coming back.

She refused to consider his return meant anything.

As I walked into my apartment, Gabriel chuckled and said, “Ah love is such a beautiful thing is it not?” Then he cleared his throat and sat up straighter on the sofa. “We have to talk, Mary.”

“Gabriel—” I started.

“Yes, we’re alone.” Thanks for reading my thoughts again, I wanted to say sarcastically. “Your roommate is out with her boyfriend.”

I nodded and leaned back against the door. I tried to relax but I was on edge. Gabriel had more to tell me about my powers and what was expected of me as the Princess of the Light. I closed my eyes and said a quick prayer: Lord, please help me to understand whatever it is that Gabriel is about to tell me.

I opened my eyes to see Gabriel smiling at me. “Okay, mental eavesdropper, I am ready.”

“Than has, in fact, employed the help of Lisbeth, just as I’d mentioned earlier. You are now being protected by four of my strongest angels. They are to keep you safe from harm and to alert you when danger is coming.”

I nodded and he continued.

“For far too long, demons like Than have influenced humans. The time has come for that to change and that is where you come in. You are God’s Chosen and you will rid the world of evil and restore goodness to Earth.”

Me? How was just one person to rid the world of evil?

I suddenly had the urge to pace. I leaned over and took off my heels.

Gabriel spoke softly, “Princess…”

I held up my hands in protest to him and said as respectfully as I could, “This is what I do to think. Please don’t try to read my thoughts, ok?”

Gabriel nodded and sat on the sofa watching me.

I put my hands down and started pacing again. Fear and doubt crept into my heart, and I stopped mid-step and closed my eyes. My father’s voice echoed in my head: Angel, you can move mountains. All you have to do is have a little faith and God will do the rest.

I put my head in my hands and cried. Gabriel quickly closed the distance between us. He wrapped his arms around me and didn’t say a word, auditory or otherwise. He just let me cry in my self-pity for a while, absorbed in my thoughts.

I sometimes sensed my father’s presence and could faintly smell his cologne. He always felt near, but I hadn’t been able to hear his voice in a long time. When I heard it a moment ago, it was wonderful, but heart-wrenching.

“Gabriel, do you think I can really defeat Than?” I tried to search his eyes for the truth.

He said simply, “Of course you can.”

I nodded and closed my eyes. Nothing could have stopped my dad, but I wasn’t sure I was as strong as he had been.

“Princess, God’s plan is revealed to all of us in the proper time.” He paused. “Have faith,” he echoed my father’s words. The reality of him doing so warmed my heart.

“You will save the life of André. Right now, the darkness has him in its clutches and André feels that he has nothing left. He feels despair and thinks there is nothing he can do to get back his life. The demons practically feed off of that negative energy to survive and have shrouded André’s entire existence—inside and out—in darkness.”

“I followed André to the cul-de-sac,” I said. “I saw André was hunched over and he didn’t appear to have any Light.” That poor man. He has lost all hope.

Gabriel nodded and a flash of light flew out of Gabriel’s hand. White smoke appeared in the center of the floor in front of me and I turned to watch it. The fog cleared and I gasped.

Fury flooded my body and I stood up and raised my hands level with Than’s chest. Die! I screamed inside.

Nothing happened. If I focused on using the Light, evil had no choice but to run and hide. Why didn’t he?

“Concentrate,” Gabriel instructed. “This is merely an exercise.”

With my hands raised once again, and I said firmly, “Light destroys the Darkness. Evil cannot stand against it.” Purple light flew out of my hands like lightning bolts and obliterated Than. Smiling to myself, I looked back at Gabriel.

“See, it is not about killing,” he said, obviously referring to the thought that accompanied my previous attempt. “That is the way of evil. It is about destroying evil with the Light. Your motive must always be about ridding the world of evil.” Gabriel paused as I sat down again.

“So, my heart must always be pure?” I turned to Gabriel.

“That is right, Princess. Your heart must always be pure. You don’t want evil to have an opportunity to take advantage and try to turn you against God.”

I tried to keep the puzzled look off of my face, but Gabriel could still read my thoughts. Did he realize how difficult that would be?

“I have feelings of love and borderline attraction towards you,” Gabriel blurted. “You do not realize that you give off such love of the Lord that it is easy for an angel like me to be attracted to you.”

Gabriel paused when I stepped back in shock, feeling my face heat up. “I swear I have a point,” he continued with a laugh. “Outside the restaurant when I was chatting with Than and Lisbeth, they saw me looking at you in an overly protective manner. They saw my weakness and tried to use it against me.”

I was a little unnerved by that.

I nodded and said, “Gabriel, I—”

A male voice interrupted me and said slyly, “I couldn’t have said it better myself.”

I whipped my head around to see Than leaning casually against the front door. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up; this was no apparition.

Gabriel’s wings flew out and he rose to his full height and Light flooded the room. Than covered his face and made a familiar low, guttural sound.

I cautiously made my way to the center of the living room. “What are you doing here, Than?” My question hung in the air.

Than growled at Gabriel, “You’re not playing by the rules.”

Gabriel lowered his wings and Than lowered his hands, as Gabriel let his Light dim.

I smiled coyly and said, “It’s not polite to ignore a woman’s question, Than.”

Than balked and said sarcastically, “I am sorry my dear, I was being lambasted with Gabriel here. What was the question again?”

Regardless of his attempt to cover it with sarcasm, I could still feel fear growing in Than. I crossed my arms over my chest and smiled back at him. “I said what are you doing here?”

Than smiled and said, “I’ve come here to warn you. If you try to interfere with the Walking Man, as you humans call him, you will wind up dead and so will that man of yours.”

“Is that supposed to scare me?”

Than shrugged then started to sputter and shake with anger. I glanced at Gabriel to see what was going on between them, but he was looking approvingly at me.

I blinked in disbelief as Than’s eyes widened. I stared into his eyes and heard him whisper, “What the…”

Out of the corner of my eye, misty light covered the distance between Than and I. My breath quickened and my pulse raced. Under my breath I said, “What’s going on?”

No one replied and as Than covered his eyes, my mouth dropped open. Than exploded upon contact with the misty light that was coming from me.

“Impressive, Princess.”

I turned to Gabriel and closed my mouth a few times. “Did I do that?”

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up! I just read my first dystopian romance series and I really enjoyed it. Being a huge fan of The Matrix series, I wondered why I haven’t read more in this genre. I let my fingers do the walking and discovered many must-reads! The best part: they’re all FREE on Amazon right now!!!  So without further ado, here are my latest dystopian romance books I’ve downloaded on my Kindle:

1- Starstruck by Brenda Hiatt

The middle of nowhere just got a lot more interesting!

Nerdy astronomy geek Marsha, M to her few friends, has never been anybody special. Orphaned as an infant and reluctantly raised by an overly-strict “aunt,” she’s not even sure who she is. M’s dream of someday escaping tiny Jewel, Indiana and making her mark in the world seems impossibly distant until hot new quarterback Rigel inexplicably befriends her. As Rigel turns his back on fawning cheerleaders to spend time with M, strange things start to happen: her acne clears up, her eyesight improves to the point she can ditch her thick glasses, and when they touch, sparks fly–literally! When M digs for a reason, she discovers deep secrets that will change her formerly mundane life forever . . . and expose her to perils she never dreamed of.

Book 1 of the award-winning Starstruck series, where teen romance blends with science fiction to open a whole new world of action, adventure and discovery.

STARFALL, the 4th and final book of this series, now available!

2- Until the End of the World by Sarah Lyons Fleming

Cassie Forrest isn’t surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too.

This is difficult enough, but Cassie’s tag along ex-boyfriend and her friend’s bratty sister have a knack for making everything, even the apocalypse, more unpleasant. When the two attract a threat as deadly as the undead to their safe haven, Cassie’s forced to see how far she’ll go to protect those she loves. And it’s a lot farther than she’d anticipated. This, coupled with Adrian’s distant voice on Safe Zone Radio and, of course, the living dead, threaten to put Cassie right back into the funk she just dragged herself out of.

Survival’s great and all, especially when you have leather armor, good friends and home-brewed beer, but there’s something Cassie must do besides survive: tell Adrian she still loves him. And to do that, Cassie has to find faith that she’s stronger than she thinks, she’s still a crack shot and true love never dies.

4- PERCEPTION: (A Sci-fi Mystery Dystopian Romance) (The Perception Trilogy Book 1) by Lee Strauss

A Library Journal Selection

Her brother Liam is missing.

Noah Brody is a natural who lives on the outside. He leads protests against the GAPs and detests the widening chasm they’ve created between those who have and those who don’t. He doesn’t like girls like Zoe and he has good reason not to like her specifically.

Zoe’s carefree life takes a traumatic turn. She’s in trouble and it turns out that Noah, the last guy on earth she should trust, is the only one who can help her.

PERCEPTION is a ( SF/mystery/romance) Young Adult novel that takes place in the not too distant future in a world changed by climate extremes, natural disasters and impending wars, and where scientific breakthroughs cause class divisions–both financially and philosophically. It explores the clash between faith and science and how differences can separate us as enemies or ally us together. And in some cases, even in the midst of betrayal and personal crisis, there’s room to fall in love.

5- Whispers in Autumn (The Last Year Book 1) by Trisha Leigh

In 2015, a race of alien Others conquered Earth. They enslaved humanity not by force, but through an aggressive mind control that turned people into contented, unquestioning robots.

Except sixteen-year-old Althea isn’t content at all, and she doesn’t need the mysterious note inside her locket to tell her she’s Something Else. It also warns her to trust no one, so she hides the pieces that make her different, even though it means being alone.

The autumn she meets Lucas, everything changes.

Althea and Lucas are immune to the alien mind control, and together they search for the reason why. What they uncover is a stunning truth the Others never anticipated, one with the potential to free the brainwashed human race.

It’s not who they are that makes them special, but what.

And what they are is a threat. One the Others are determined to eliminate for good.

6- Reckless Rescue (A Barren Planet Romance Book 1) by Rinelle Grey

He crash-landed on her planet. Can they survive the winter together without falling in love?

Stranded on the dying planet of Zerris, Marlee longs for the one thing she can’t have…a family. Due to the noxious gas covering the planet, she can’t conceive a child, and the Council, determined to repopulate the planet, have ended her third—and most precious—relationship. They insist she pick a new mate and try again, but she’s sworn off love and the possibility of ever having a real family.

When a ship from the thriving planet of Urslat crashes on Zerris, Marlee rescues the ship’s daring captain, Tyris. His ship is grounded, winter is setting in, and he won’t survive without help. She offers him a deal…he can live with her if he pretends to be her mate so the Council will leave her alone.

Tyris agrees and a hungry desire sparks between them as they battle the harsh winter and primitive conditions. Their attraction grows, and soon, keeping their distance becomes impossible, even more challenging than the snow, the Council, and, for Marlee, the risks of a real relationship.

Will she risk her heart one last time for a chance at her dream? Or will Tyris be her undoing?

7- The Beautiful Ones (The Chosen Ones) by Lori Brighton

Some say we’re special, and that’s why we’re kept in seclusion. Beyond those walls evil lurks and innocent prey would be lost in minutes. Gone. Destroyed. Forgotten.

Others say the opposite: we’re locked away because there’s something wrong with us. If we roamed the outside world, we might taint the beautiful ones. A species so pure, that to merely be in their presence is a gift.

As for my beliefs…I’m not sure.

But I do know one thing: neither of those reasons explains why it is that they come for us only after we’ve passed the age of sixteen. Whether we want to go or not, we’re taken through those iron gates. Escorted away from the only home we’ve ever known, escorted to our destiny—whatever that destiny may be—never to be seen again.

The Beautiful Ones is a prequel intended to introduce Lori’s newest Young Adult series. At around 21,000 words, this is a short story. This Young Adult Romance contains kissing, cursing and some violence. It is best for ages 14 and up.

8-Banded (Banded 1) by Logan Byrne

This is the first of the three book series. The prequel, book #0.5, takes place before this book and is out now for free! The box set is also out now!

In dystopian Manhattan, society is divided into six zones, with each one representing a citizen’s benefit to society: Stalwart (strength), Astute (intelligence), Collusive (greed), Radiant (beauty), Quixotic (no life direction), and the Altruistic (willingness to help others).  On a citizen’s sixteenth birthday, a computer suggests a new zone for them based on their inherent benefit to society.  When Kalenna Slater is sorted out of her home zone Quixotic and into Altruistic, she thinks things can’t get worse.  Life looks dismal until she meets Gavin, a boy also just sorted into Altruistic who becomes the light needed on her cloudy days.

During sorting she receives a device known as ‘The Band’.  It’s a large watch-like device that never comes off, and it measures a citizen’s karma on a scale from one to one hundred.  If a citizen does good, they gain points.  If a citizen does bad, including breaking laws, they lose points.  When your number reaches zero, the band acts as judge, jury, and executioner, and you are injected with toxins that kill you within minutes.

After sorting, recruits are taken to a three month long mandatory school named HQ.  It’s at HQ she meets new friends from different zones, and finally begins to feel at ease.  Everything goes well until a rare trip home makes her discover that her father, who has been missing for a decade, may have taken part in a terrible program that stands to shake the fabric of society.

This is the first book of three, with the prequel and epilogue novellas out now! This dystopian series has suspense, action and adventure, and romance that will be sure to leave you smiling!

9- Elite (Citizen Saga, Book 1): A Dystopian Romantic Suspense Series by Nicola Claire

Trent Masters is a Citizen, born and bred. The leader of a small group of revolutionaries desperately trying to free their beloved city of Wánměi. He knows a world exists beyond the island’s borders. He knows a life exists without the heavy handed manipulation and tight fisted control of those in charge.

What he didn’t know was that an Elite would have more chance of challenging the Overseers who control Wánměi than a rebel ever could. And he certainly wasn’t expecting her to capture his heart as stealthily as she moves under the darkness of a hot and humid night.

Citizen versus Elite. The battle has begun.

10- Phoenix: a new adult dystopian romance: Theta Waves apocalypse series episode 1 by Thea Atkinson

Using her gift now that the god has come and gone is the one thing punishable by death, and Theda isn’t the kind of girl to take too many chances. There are just two things that matter to her: tricking out her gift so she can eat, and blissing out on her drug of choice so she can forget the past–not exactly in that order.

Her craving for a fix gets her into deadly trouble when a rugged bounty hunter as damaged as she is discovers her secret. Now she must find a way to shake her addiction if she is to trust the very handsome and tortured hero who ends up saving her from certain execution.
