A Warrior's Umbra

Title: A Warrior’s Umbra

Author: Christopher Dinsmore

Genre: Science Fiction

Book Blurb:

“A Warrior’s Umbra” is told by Jester detailing his experience of going from a lost boy stranded in the tundra of a foreign planet to becoming the destined protector of the Histianites, a local tribe. In this adventure, Jester lives among the Histianites, concealing his unique abilities in accordance with his adoptive father’s wishes. During Jester’s time on the planet a Histianite nearly dies in front of the tribe. Unable to control himself, Jester reveals his abilities in an attempt to save the man. The revelation of Jester’s powers sends fear through the tribe. Under instruction from the tribe’s leader, Jester is sent to seek guidance from a legendary deity who is rumored to reside at the peak of Histian, the home mountain. Jester accepts this mission, unaware of a dark entity lurking just beyond the horizon.

Excerpt:

My brain started to fill with survival tactics, most of which consisted of using my senses, touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. The voice informed me of the things I was capable of doing. The voice said I was able to absorb all information I came into contact with, down to a material’s molecular structure, and my senses had adaptations that would become useful. The voice began its run down on specific adaptations, but before it could finish the first one, the robotic voice interrupted.

“Estimated time until impact is currently thirty seconds.”

I had gotten lost in listening to the voice and didn’t realize how much time had passed by. I focused on the area around me, still too dark to see. I had no idea what I was supposed to do other than listen to the voice’s directions. The voice had told me that my only job at the moment was to stay calm, but that task became increasingly difficult with the temperature on the rise and a quiet hiss from outside.

The hiss I heard quickly grew into a roar making it hard to hear the voice when it delivered yet another message.

“Estimated impact velocity is 12,000 meters per second,” the voice said.

The voice’s message didn’t help my situation. I knew the measurement and the number, but my relative comparison for speed was non-existent. I was left guessing until the event actually happened.

“Initiating countdown sequence. Ten.”

I knew there were only nine more numbers before the count would strike zero and the impact would occur. In these last moments my vision began to work in a way that allowed me to see through the darkness.

The room appeared to my eyes in full color, and I was able to look at my body and the things around it. I assumed that this ocular ability was one of the adaptations the voice spoke of during its last talk. Most of the things I saw I had already identified, such as my hands, feet, torso, and the restraints holding them down.

The size of the room was also consistent with my prior estimation. The things I didn’t account for were the dark clothes tight against my body and the wires running from the chair into my arms and legs. There were ten wires that I could see. Each wire was black with a colored tag at the end nearest to my skin.

I jerked my head forward only slightly before feeling a quick tug in the opposite direction. Now I knew what had been keeping my head restrained. There was a thick cord, much larger than the wires in my limbs, running from behind the chair into the back of my head. My senses sharpened, and I started to feel the wide array of tiny wires running under my skin nearly surrounding my skull. I tried to determine their potential purpose, but before I could, the robot raised its volume.

“Five,” it said continuing its count.

The noise coming from outside was much louder, now blaring through the walls of the room. I prepared myself for what was about to happen, and when I did, a message shot through my head. I couldn’t tell where it had come from, but I heard it warn me of danger, then almost as if the warning had never happened, it was gone.

The world around me lit up just before it all happened for real.

The robot’s voice delivered its last message. “Brace for impact. Two. One.”

My eyes widened, breath sharpened, hands clenched, and body jerked as an incredible jolt of energy slammed into me. My mind flashed back to the clock inside my head. The clock had slowed down along with the world around me. I could think in real time, but everything else was moving along with the clock I held in my head.

After the initial shock I saw the metal wall in front of me tear away, revealing a bright light that filled the room. I became momentarily blinded before switching my vision back to normal. Once I could see again, I looked down toward my body. When I did, I felt the cord in the back of my head get ripped out, taking shreds of my skin with it. My eyes locked onto my arms, which were being launched from my seat with the rest of my body. The cushioned restraints snapped and the wires tore away, leaving deep cuts along my limbs. The world picked back up to its normal pace beyond my control, and I flew forward back into the darkness.

I felt lost again.

Muffy and Valor by @karlbeckstrand Teaches Compassion and Love! #FREE #bookreview #dogs

Muffy and Valor

Title: Muffy and Valor

Author: Karl Beckstrand (Author), Brandon Rodriguez (Illustrator)

Genre: Children’s Books, Dogs, Non-Fiction

Book Blurb:

Muffy is a little dog who loves people; but after a painful injury she is wary of other dogs. Valor is a lost German shepherd who gets hit by a car. When Muffy’s family brings Valor home to recover, no one is sure what Muff will do.

This tender picture book teaches compassion, friendship, trust, and courage (kids ages 4 – 7 including any with a fear of dogs). Includes finding activity (count the different dogs).

700 English words in dyslexic-friendly font by award-winning children’s author Karl Beckstrand (Mini-mysteries for Minors [multicultural/bilingual series]), illustrated by Brandon Rodriguez, 28-page, 8.5”x8.5” hard cover, soft cover, or ebook picture book with Hispanic family, minority child, big dogs, and online extras for dog lovers (worldwide rights © Sept. 2017 Premio Publishing) PremioBooks.com, Baker & Taylor/Follett, Brodart, Ingram, Amazon/Kindle, Barnes & Noble/Nook, EBSCO, Overdrive, iTunes, Kobo, and select retailers. My Review:

Compassion, even in dogs, mends all hurts.

Muffy is a little white dog who loves Carlos very much but she doesn’t like other dogs. Why? A big dog bit her once and she had to have stitches. She barks loudly at other dogs and refuses to befriend any other dogs.

Valor is a big dog who lives on the other side of town. One day he went for a walk without his owner, Bill. He got lost and while trying to cross a busy street, a car hit him. Carlos, Muffy’s owner, spots Valor hurt and run home to get his mum. Together, they take Valor to the vet to get stitched up and bring him home. Will Muffy befriend a dog that’s hurt like she was once, or will she continue to hate all big dogs?

A delightful, touching story about helping others, compassion and the unconditional love of pets. Beautifully illustrated and a good message: another 5-star gem from Karl Beckstrand!

Based on two real-life dogs and a little boy (the author).

My Rating: 5 stars

You can’t pick your family…

Death by Chocolate is her favorite dessert. And those knitting needles aren’t just for craft projects. To most people, Gin Bombay is an ordinary single mom. Then again, they don’t know she’s from a family of top secret assassins. Somewhere between leading a Girl Scout troop for her kindergartner—would nooses count for a knot badge?—and keeping their puppy from destroying the furniture, Gin now has to take out a new target.

But you can pick them off …

Except this target has an incredibly hot Australian bodyguard who knows just how to make her weak in the knees. But with a traitor threatening to expose everything, Gin doesn’t have much time to indulge her hormones. She’s got to find the leak and clear her assignment … or she’ll end up next on the Bombay family hit list.

Excerpt

No one really liked family reunions.  I got that.  But when I listen to people complain about it ’round the water cooler, I couldn’t help rolling my eyes.  I mean really, try it when you come from a family of assassins.  Kind of gave “avoiding Aunt Jean’s potato salad” a whole new meaning.

That’s right.  Family of assassins.  I came from a line of murderers dating back to ancient Greece.  Mafia?  Puhleeeese.  Ninjas?  Amateurs.  Illuminati?  How pedestrian.  My ancestors had invented the garrote, ice pick, and arsenic.  And Grandma Mary insisted that the wheel had actually been devised as a portable skull crusher.  I’d tell you the names of some of our famous victims through history, but I’d had to sign a confidentiality clause in my own blood when I was five.  So you’d just have to take my word for it.

I turned the engraved invitation over in my hands and sighed.  I hate these things.  We only held them once every five years, but for some reason, this time, the reunion was only a year after the last one.  That meant someone in the family had been naughty.  That meant one of my relatives was going to die.

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: Christmas Bizarre by @funnyauthor #COZYMYSTERY #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - CB

Title: Christmas Bizarre

Author: Lizz Lund

Genre: Humorous Mystery; Cozy Mystery

Book Blurb:

What do Santa’s Sidekick, a dead lawyer and a geriatric vampire have in common? Meet Mina Kitchen–a forty-something single who finds trouble quicker than she can whip up a batch of breakfast breads. Plural. Her catering disorder runs neck-and-neck with her weird luck, and her cat’s weirder tendency toward gnawing elf gear. Okay, and getting kidnapped a couple of times in one week is a little strange, too.

Excerpt:

I slipped into a panic and ran around the basement like my hair was on fire. I stubbed my toe and fell onto a workhorse, throwing planks and hardware everywhere.

Bernie stood with his hands on his hips, shaking his head. “I’m a vampire, Tina, we don’t do sex. Truth is, we can’t.”

“Fabulous. Dolores must be thrilled.”

“It’s not my fault!”

“Of course not. It happens to a lot of men your age.”

“You don’t understand. We’re separated!”

“Sorry.”

“I’m not sorry! I did it on purpose! To save her! In case I forgot myself.”

“Forgot yourself?” I asked, immediately wishing I’d kept my big mouth shut.

“I couldn’t suck the life blood out of my better half, could I? It’s not her fault I turned into a vampire. We’ve been married for fifty-three years!”

“Congrats.”

“Congratulate me in the afterlife, you stupid blood-pumping piece of flesh!” Bernie lunged at me, and we went tumbling. My head narrowly missed a pile of broken cinderblock, and connected with the cement floor instead.

I blinked a few times as I came to, dimly realizing that Bernie was sucking on my neck.

“Yecch!” I pushed him off and shoved him away. “What the hell are you doing?”

“I’m feeding!”

“You have no teeth!”

“Crap. You’re right. I left them upstairs in the glass. Be right back.” He hustled away for his gun and leaped up the steps, locking the door behind him.

I rubbed my neck and wiped away his spit. “Pretty spry for an old guy.”

“Quick! Can you barricade the door?” Tina asked.

I grabbed the flashlight and looked around. “There’s a bunch of cinderblocks, but I don’t think I have time to lift enough of them. Besides I can barely see.”

Tina thumped her head against the pole. “My luck, I gonna die with a stiff and a piss bucket while you get gummed to death.”

“I know, I know. This is pretty bad.”

Tina stopped thumping and sat up a bit. “The delivery place is going to be looking for that guy, sooner or later. What we need to do is guarantee us being here later.”

“Yeah?”

“So this is what you’re gonna do…”

A Guardian Falls

Title:  A Guardian Falls

Author: R. Tran

Genre: Fantasy

Book Blurb:

All looks bleak when Mara is forced to return home after her love’s brush with death. She only has one magical artifact and the army seems out of reach. The consequences should she fail or even succeed finally set in and Mara has doubts about everything.  There will be a war of blades and magic with Mara at the center, but Mara wonders if she has the strength to survive.

Excerpt:

In the dim morning light, Mara heard voices in the distance too faint to understand. Bishop shifted below her, anxious for the coming battle. Mara pulled her cloak tighter against the chill air and damp drizzle as she waited for news of Laran’s army. A few of the horses behind her snorted their dislike of Drake’s swift approach.

“It’s just as we thought. Half his troops went south in an attempt to flank us and back us into the mountains, but the remainder are coming head on. It shouldn’t be long now. Is the shield in place?” Drake asked, looking off to the horizon.

“It has been since first light. Its constant hum is driving me crazy. Every fiber in my body longs to bring it down,” she informed him.

“You’ll be distracted soon enough,” Drake assured her.

Mara gave a forced smile. “I only want one man’s life. It’s a shame so many will have to die defending him.”

“I’m sure he’s saying the same thing.”

“He’s not on the battlefield. He’s locked away in the castle somewhere. I can feel it,” she spat annoyed at his cowardice. She looked to Drake. “How was Kess?”

“Worried about you. Don’t worry, you’ll see each other tonight,” Drake promised.

Mara looked up when a spell crashed into the shield above. Unsure of what was going on, Bishop sidestepped. Mara calmed him and he didn’t move when another spell crashed into the shield. Flames licked the shield overhead but rolled off like water on oiled canvas.

“What are they up to?” Drake asked, looking up as well.

“My guess is they’re trying to bring down the shield so they can kill us with magic.”

Drake gave her a weary look. He was all too familiar with magic. “Are you sure this will hold?”

“No, but it was created by magic far stronger than any they have,” Mara replied as blue lightning crackled over the shield’s surface. “They’re getting closer.”

Arrows darkened the sky in the distance. “The battle’s begun,” Drake said menacingly. He drew his sword with a mischievous grin and kicked his horse into a run. “See you tonight,” he called as he rode off. Mara drew a short sword and kicked Bishop into a run. The other men were at his heels. Everyone was eager to begin. The sooner it started, the sooner it would end.

Mara reined Bishop into a throng of men ahead of her. He eagerly rushed in and pushed men out of his way. She swung down on an enemy soldier successfully severing an artery. Blood sprayed out as he fell to the ground. She caught another squarely in the chest knocking him backwards. She barely had time to pull out her axe before he fell. Mara cut off a man’s hand as he raised it to swing at one of her soldiers.

As Mara pressed forward, a man lunged into her path. She instantly threw her axe and struck him in the chest. Mara heard the crunch of bone when it hit and the man sank to his knees gasping for air. Three men caught her by surprise and rushed toward her with the intent of dragging her off her horse. Mara wouldn’t have time to go around them.

Bishop, on the other hand, saw them and stopped suddenly. Rearing up, he kicked one man in the head on the way up and another in the chest on the way down. Mara formed a blue ball of flame and held it in her hand waiting to hurl it at the third when she landed. His eyes went wide when he saw the ball headed towards him.

Meet Jack and Darci From A SEAL’s Song by Jennifer Lowery + a #FREE book! #romance #books

Download for FREE May 23-25!!!-2

Hi N. N. Light’s POTL Blog and all you fabulous readers out there * waves * Thank you so much for having me today! I’m super excited to be here! I have a couple giveaways and a free book to offer you so read on to find out how to take advantage of fun, free books!

Ever since I picked up my first Suzanne Brockmann Navy SEAL book I’ve been in love with these tough, incredibly intelligent men. I knew I had to write my own series with my own SEAL team. A SEAL’s Song is the first book in my SEAL Team Alpha series and what an incredible journey it was for both me and my characters! Today, I’m bringing you a special interview with the hero and heroine from A SEAL’s Song. I hope you enjoy meeting Jack and Darci as much as I enjoyed writing them.

P.S. A SEAL’s Song is FREE on Amazon May 23-25 so be sure to grab your free copy HERE!

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

Jack: Hell, no.

Darci: No, but it’s flattering.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?

Darci: * smiles * The romance. I already know what Jack is going to say.

Jack: * grins * Sorry, hun. The action. And the sex.

* Darci rolls her eyes *

What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?

Jack: Take my sailboat out deep-sea fishing.

Darci: I’m not much for fishing, that’s Jack’s thing. I’m usually in my studio writing and composing songs. But, when he gets home… * she smiles at Jack who grins back *

Do you like the way the book ended?

Jack and Darci in unison: Yes.

Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

Jack: Not if it means putting Darci in more danger.

Darci: Agreed. Although, with Jack at my side, I wouldn’t be as afraid of what Jennifer threw at us. * leans in and whispers * She likes to torment us.

What do you do for a living?

Darci: * laces her fingers through Jacks * Jack is a Navy SEAL and the bravest, strongest man I know. I’m a singer.

What is your most prized possession?

Darci: A Celtic necklace given to me by my grandmother. Had it not been for that necklace, I never would have met Jack.

What do you like most about where you live?

Jack: Darci approved of my house. That’s all that matters to me.

Darci: He lives in this cute gingerbread house on the ocean. I adore it.

Jennifer Lowery Author pic

Meet Jennifer:

NY Times & USA Today bestselling author, Jennifer Lowery grew up reading romance novels in the back of her math book and on the bus to school, and never wanted to be anything but a writer. Her summers were spent sitting at the kitchen table with her sisters spinning tales of romance and intrigue and always with a tall glass of ice tea at their side.

Today, Jennifer is living that dream and she couldn’t be happier to share her passion with her readers. She loves everything there is about romance. Her stories feature alpha heroes who meet their match with strong, independent heroines. She believes that happily ever after is only the beginning of her stories. And the road to that happy ending is paved with action, adventure, and romance. As her characters find out when they face danger, overcome fears, and are forced to look deep within themselves to discover love.

Jennifer lives in Michigan with her husband and two children. When she isn’t writing she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.

#FREEBIE Alert: The Du Lac Devil by @maryanneyarde April 15 – 18th! #HistoricalFantasy #IARTG

the-du-lac-devil-10-august-2016-kindle

Title: The Du Lac Devil (Book 2 of The Du Lac Chronicles)

Author: Mary Anne Yarde

Genre: Historical Fantasy

Book Blurb:

The Award-Winning series ~ The Du Lac Chronicles, continues:

War is coming to Saxon Briton.

As one kingdom after another falls to the savage might of the High King, Cerdic of Wessex, only one family dares to stand up to him — The Du Lacs.

Budic and Alden Du Lac are barely speaking to each other, and Merton is a mercenary, fighting for the highest bidder. If Wessex hears of the brothers’ discord, then all is lost.

Fate brings Merton du Lac back to the ancestral lands of his forefathers, and he finds his country on the brink of civil war. But there is worse to come, for his father’s old enemy has infiltrated the court of Benwick. Now, more than ever, the Du Lac must come together to save the kingdom and themselves.

Can old rivalries and resentments be overcome in time to stop a war?

Excerpt:

“I didn’t mean to offend,” the monk said with compassion. “I simply wanted you to have this,” he handed the crucifix to Merton. “There is always a way back. Remember, Jesus looks for the lost sheep, not the ones who are all ready part of the congregation.”

Merton took the cross and rubbed his fingers lightly over the rough wood. “Thank you,” he said, raising his eyes to look at the boy. It was unusual for a man of the cloth to speak to him, they all feared the demon inside him would jump out and devour them whole. “What’s your name?”

“Sampson,” the boy replied instantly. “It is never too late to repent,” he continued, unperturbed at speaking to one who was so actively shunned. “Forgiveness is given to those who seek it.”

Merton looked back towards his brother. Budic had slumped in the chair, his head in his hands. Merton’s grey eyes clashed with Josephine’s blue ones, and the memory of a past love swept over him. He made himself look away. Some things were better forgotten. “Maybe Jesus should concentrate on the sheep that willingly follow him and leave the rest of us to the wolves.” He handed the crucifix back. “I don’t want it,” he added quietly.

The boy shook his head in disagreement. “You don’t understand. I can rid you of the demon inside. I know how to make them leave your body,” he spoke with confidence, his eyes sparkling with determination.

“Practice your skills on someone else,” Merton replied. “But thank you for the offer,” he added when he saw the disappointment in the boy’s eyes. “I do not deserve or want absolution.”

“We need to go, come on,” Alden stated, it was bad enough hearing the rumours of what Merton had become, he would not stand and listen to his brother condemn himself as well.

The boy watched them leave.

“There are some demons that are too powerful, even for you,” the Abbot said, placing his hand on the boy’s thin shoulder. “Stay away from Merton du Lac.”

“He needs my help,” the monk argued. “I thought it was our responsibility to bring the word of God to everyone, regardless of what they have done. Does that not apply to him?”

“He knows the word of God, but he has chosen to ignore it and now we must ignore him. You can not save everyone.” The Abbot squeezed his shoulder and then walked back towards the coffin.

“I will save you, Merton du Lac,” Sampson whispered the promise. “As God is my witness, I will.”

Thirsty for Water is #99cents! #YA #paranormal #KindleUnlimited

Title: Thirsty for Water: A Short Story

Author: N. N. Light

Genre: Paranormal, Young Adult, Short Story

Book Blurb:

Juliet can’t wait to graduate from high school and finally move on with her life. Five more days and she’s free. She gazes out the window while her history teacher, Mrs. Johnson, drones on about war, famine and lack of water in Africa.

A gong rings, startling Juliet out of her daydream. She looks around to see if it was one of her classmates pulling a prank when a little boy carrying a spear appears. Is he a ghost or something more? He pleads for her help and before she can argue, she is transported to a small village in Africa. History comes alive like never before and Juliet must decide how she can help Noko and his village before it’s too late.

Thirsty for Water tells the story of Africa and the need for water in an approachable way for children of all ages. A great learning tool for teachers, parents and libraries.

Excerpt:

“How do you know my name?” She gasped and tried to pinch her arm.

“I know all about you.  My name is Noko.” He paused and reached out to touch her arm. “Why are you hurting yourself like that?”

His hand felt cool on her arm and she stopped. If he was a ghost, I wouldn’t be able to feel him.  This must be real… but how?  She reached up and touched his thumb with her index finger.  His skin was dry yet very real.

“I was m-m-making sure you were real.”  She leaned forward and whispered, “Why are you here?  What do you want with me?”

He took his hand away and smiled.  “Your elder there is talking about my country and all you can think about is getting out of here.  Where I come from, there is no school.  Children like me hunt, fish and work in the fields.  You are lucky to sit here all day and not work.”

She leaned back in her chair and thought about it.  No school, only working to survive.  It was a sobering thought and she shivered.

Praise for Thirsty for Water:

“I loved it. I had no idea just how short short would be when I started it, but what a lovely tale to teach & inspire! I feel strongly a connection being made always holds the best potential to calm, comfort & nourish, to move & inspire hope, to insight change or instill lessons. And for me, I feel any kind of travel…time travel, dimension travel (I’m a big fan of the Twilight Zone!), or even a story with a “real” trip involved always helps to create that connection somehow. It was THAT quick…& true…once Juliet felt a connection to Noko…it was a done deal! So beautiful. The story simple…& short…yet so powerful.” – Amazon Reviewer
