Title: Legends of Windemere: The Spirit Well

Author: Charles E. Yallowitz

Genre: Sword & Sorcery, Epic Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Born from the light and darkness, Dariana can no longer avoid her fate.

The final corrupted temple stands between the champions and Baron Kernaghan having their great battle. Only one problem: the Compass Key refuses to work with Dariana, who long ago wiped all memories of the Spirit Well from her mind. Now, they are forced to follow a trail of clues that Dariana’s former self left behind centuries ago. It is a path that will lead the champions into a part of their friend’s past that could tear them all apart.

Will the bonds of friendship be stronger than the call of blood?

My Review:

All is not as it appears in Windemere and the Champions are in for their greatest challenge. The final temple stands between them and the Baron. But before they get on their way, Nyx is at the receiving end of endless questions and accusations from her family concerning her relationship with her beloved. Are they married? When will they get married? Nyx’s temper flares and she returns to her lover’s arms for comfort.

The Champions band together and head to Rodillen then to the Spirit Well. The only problem is that Dariana’s memories are wiped clean (mysterious) and cannot remember where this final temple is located. When she asks the Mayor about it, she finds herself in a bind. Or is it all part of her plan?

Dariana’s father is the Baron and while she knows more than she lets on, her actions propel the Champions into a time where memories are fabricated and Luke is separated from the rest of the Champions. Is he dead? No one knows for sure. It takes the Champions working together as one to unravel the truth.

This book twisted my emotions and took me on an adventure I didn’t see coming. While Yallowitz drops clues along the way, when something big happens (won’t reveal what… you’ll have to read to find out), it was like the floor drops away. It was so shocking that I almost quit reading it. Almost. My curiosity kept me riveted to the story and the ending was even better than I could’ve hoped.

For all you fantasy romance readers out there, you’re in for a treat. Yallowitz adds the perfect blend of romance, intrigue, action and drama. I didn’t know the author was a romantic at heart. Well done!

If you’re a fan of The Two Towers, you’ll really love this book. It’s a standalone in the Windemere series with plenty of shocking twists and turns.

A must read for epic fantasy readers and if magic is more your thing, you’ll really love The Spirit Well.

My Rating:  4.5 stars

Excerpt:

Luke forces himself to smirk, which disappears the moment his friends turn back to the path ahead. The half-elf kicks at a rock that turns out to be a crab, the animal catching his boot and clambering up his leg. Not wanting to hurt the creature, he carefully reaches down to remove it from his clothes. The pincers try to grab the half-elf’s fingers, but the crab is too slow to get anything more than a momentary pinch. Bending down at the edge of the path, Luke places the crustacean in the water and pauses at the sight of an orange blob. Unnoticed by the others, he watches more of them appear and pulsate as they get closer to the surface. Drawing his sabers and turning to check both sides, the half-elf refuses to move and keeps his blades ready at his sides. When his friends stop to talk to him, Luke hisses for silence and nudges his head at the thick swarm that is surrounding them.

Instead of exploding out of the swamp like the warrior expects, the orange blobs rise to reveal that they are large jellyfish. They remain bobbing on the surface while their stinging tentacles whip out of the dark water. Numbing pain rips through Luke’s veins, the creatures focusing entirely on the forest tracker. He can feel his skin begin to dry out as the jellyfish absorb the salt and water from his body. Spinning around, the half-elf manages to free himself from most of the tentacles, but he is already too weak to continue fighting. By the time Nyx launches her fire attack to burn several of their attackers, Luke’s vision is blurring and he tumbles into the water.

“I’ve got him!” Delvin shouts, diving into the swamp before Sari can move.

The former mercenary’s chainmail helps him sink quickly, its enchantment allowing him to breathe underwater. He is unnerved by the sight of thousands of jellyfish, which are rising to fight the other champions. A few catch Delvin in their tentacles, but he uses his potent aura to send a backlash that stuns the creatures. More of them drift toward the submerged warriors, but pay more attention to their defenseless brethren. Hungry and cannibalistic, the newcomers connect to the head of the unconscious jellyfish and steadily devour them. With violent shudders, the victorious predators bloat to twice their size and swim lower in an attempt to greet the champions as they sink. Unable to see through the murky water and tightly packed animals, Delvin searches for the faint spark of Luke’s aura.

He mutters a curse when he notices that his friend is above him and being held by three large jellyfish. Praying he is not too late, Delvin swims to the half-elf and stabs the nearest creature through what he thinks is the brain. The attack does not slow the predator down, so the warrior delivers a charge of magic to burst it like a balloon. Grabbing Luke’s wrist, he feels a dwindling pulse that is getting weaker by the second. Quickly popping the remaining jellyfish in rapid succession, Delvin starts swimming to the surface and tries to alter the saltwater so that it replenishes the half-elf’s body.

As the forest tracker’s eyes open, a jet of water catches the two warriors and rockets them toward the path. They assume it is Sari, so it is a surprise when they are sent hurtling into the sky above the swamp. Too weak to transform, Luke can only keep a tight hold of Delvin’s arm and try to access the griffin’s control over wind. Being high above the ground, they can see their friends holding their own against the jellyfish. Fizzle is darting through the swarm while trying to put them to sleep, but his rainbow breath is ineffective. The only ones that are having the most success are Nyx and Sari with their blasts of elemental magic. Many times the two women attack the same target, causing a small explosion due to the opposing energies. As they fall towards the swamp, another geyser erupts to engulf Luke and Delvin, sending them back into the air. The pair can barely tell up from down, so they close their eyes to avoid vertigo and try to get their bearings.

A loud sucking sound unnerves the falling champions, causing them to stare down at the beginnings of a powerful whirlpool. The less stable mangroves tumble into the churning water, which is dragging the jellyfish into its depths. From their vantage point, the warriors can see the orange blobs are getting carried in various directions like they have been pulled in a network of tunnels. With a loud groan, the path buckles beneath the champions’ feet and they struggle to remain standing. Luke and Delvin take some relief from seeing their friends clinging together, Sari’s immovability making certain they will stay together. Timoran is stretching toward the plummeting warriors, his fingers touching the updraft that has been slowing their fall. With the barbarian unable to reach them, Nyx does the next best thing and lassos the pair with a magical tether.

“Still think something is wrong with this temple?” Delvin asks as they watch the ground collapse beneath their friends.

Friday Book Round-Up: Charms of the Feykin by @CYallowitz #FridayReads #Fantasy #POTLReads

For this week’s Friday Book Round-Up, I’ve decided to spotlight one of my favorite fantasy books this year. I highly recommend the whole series but each book can read as a standalone.

 charms-of-the-feykin

Title: Charms of the Feykin (Legends of Windemere #11)

Author: Charles Yallowitz

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Blurb:

To make a champion fall, one must wound their very soul.

Nyx is leading the charge to rescue Delvin and Sari, who have gone missing in the southern jungles of Windemere. Battling through the local predators, the champions are surprised when they reunite in the Feykin city of Rhundar. Instead of captives, the missing heroes have become the city’s rulers and are on the verge of starting a war with those that want to exterminate their new followers. Even with such a noble cause, Delvin and Sari have changed into brutal warlords that may kill each other and their friends long before they step onto the battlefield.

Have Delvin and Sari really changed for the worst or is there a greater threat pulling the champions’ strings?

Excerpt:

The large chamber inside the red stone temple is littered with bones and dust-covered pieces of rubble. Having left Isaiah among the mushroom-covered stumps and broken statues outside, the champions quietly search the room for clues. Fizzle remains invisible and perches above the doorway, his eyes never straying from the twin stairwells built into the floor. His attention never straying from the thick darkness, the drite’s eyes occasionally materialize as a pair of glistening slits that one could mistake for a trick of the light. The dais in the back of the room is devoid of all signs that Sari and Delvin had camped there, which Luke finds more suspicious than if he had found their abandoned gear. Bright sunlight flows through holes in the domed roof, revealing thick vines that nobody can find the beginning or end of. Random flutters of wings can be heard from above, but the champions refuse to waste time hunting down what is probably a harmless animal. Spying a few errant feathers on the stone floor, they are sure the noises are coming from parrots or toucans like the ones encountered in the jungle.

Still in her halter top, Nyx is slapping and scratching at her itching chest where the Compass Key tattoo is twisting back and forth. The aggravating sensation stops when she finds a matching symbol on the wall, a dried pile of torn vines sitting below the picture. Some of the ancient paint remains to identify each of the six orbs that circle the ivory pearl in the image’s center, the piece nothing more than a piece of polished marble. A dull power flows down her arm when she touches the stone and the enchanted marking on her skin settles down. Examining the rest of the picture, she assumes the figure sitting in the middle is the Baron and the six skulls at his feet are the champions. Fresh scratches run along the rest of the mural as if somebody wanted to hide the rest of the picture. Nyx swears she sees a drawing that resembles Helgard, but it is too damaged for her to be certain.

Wandering away from his friends, Luke tries to figure out the purpose for the temple by uncovering the rest of the walls and making his way toward the back. Severed vines, startled snakes, and disturbed insects are in his wake as he gradually makes his way toward the dais. Sweat is pouring down his brow and soaking his shirt as his determined hunt starts feeling fruitless. The murals that he uncovers are either worn away or too confusing for him to decipher. At one point, he reveals a set of metal pieces embedded in the dark red stone, but their associated drawings have eroded away. Turning toward the others, he sees that they are gathering around Nyx to discuss the Compass Key picture. The forest tracker cannot stop himself from continuing his own search, a prickling on the back of his neck urging him forward.

Once he reaches the corner, Luke hops onto the dais and is immediately driven to his knees by a surge of intense pain. His mouth magically clamps shut, preventing him from calling out to his friends. Muscles strain as he tears open his shirt and finds that the scar running diagonally across his body is seeping blood. The picture of a forge surrounded by demons appears in the floor and the suffering half-elf swears there is a guttural voice speaking in a language that makes his skin crawl. Whenever Luke tries to use his power to translate the words, a bolt of agony breaks his concentration and his old wound froths. Blood pools beneath him and he can barely hear his friends racing over, the forest tracker unsure how much time has passed since his torment began. A strong arm wraps around the warrior’s waist and hauls him off the dais, his scar returning to normal as soon as he is clear of the stone. Body shuddering and curled into a ball, Luke is unable to relax until Fizzle hits him in the face with a concentrated puff of rainbow smoke.

“Did he set off a trap?” Nyx asks while helping the warrior stand. She is surprised at how quickly his strength returns and that there is no blood on his chest. “Maybe the people who took Sari and Delvin knew we were coming. I’m so tired of guessing at everything.”

“You act like this adventure should be different than the others,” Luke teases with a half-hearted smirk.

Even with such a noble cause, Delvin and Sari have changed into brutal warlords that may kill each other and their friends long before they step onto the battlefield.

Have Delvin and Sari really changed for the worst or is there a greater threat pulling the champions’ strings?

My Review:

How do you defeat a champion? Take away all that he/she loves and unleash an unholy curse around their heart to prevent them from telling the truth. If they try to break the curse by telling the truth, daggers will pierce their heart and they will die.

The champions have been separated and while Nyx, Luke and the others are searching for Delvin and Sari, they encounter all sorts of trouble. Nyx is struck with visions that aren’t real while Luke is mortally injured. Just when all hope appears lost, they discover Delvin and Sari are not captured but are King and Queen of Rhundar. The champions are reunited, Luke is healed (sort of) but all is not as it appears, especially since Delvin and Sari are warlords hell-bent on destroying a race of people they know nothing about.

Nyx, Luke, Dariana, Timoran and Fizzle know something is not right with their friends. They split up to discover the truth and it’s Nyx who suffers the greatest consequences. Cursed by a deadly entity, she cannot speak the truth or else she will die a horrible death. Will she sacrifice herself to save her friends or will she become another tasty snack to the unknown entity?

This installment in the Windemere series is filled with action, adventure, battles, magic, conflict, betrayal, love, jealousy, warring races and so much more. The action is intense, sometimes gripping. I had audible emotional responses throughout the book and Yallowitz is a master at thrusting the reader inside each character (without head hopping). At the core of Charms of the Feykin, the reader is forced to answer a moral dilemma: if it was a choice of saving those I loved or dying, which would I choose?

This is a blend of The Two Towers, Games of Thrones and Dawn of Wonder (Jonathan Renshaw). It can be read as a standalone and I highly recommend it.

Favorite Character: Nyx. I know I said this the last time I read and reviewed a Windemere book. I connect with Nyx on so many levels. I love how honest she is and how she cares for everyone’s safety first before her own. I cried when she sacrificed herself for her two best friends, even when they didn’t deserve saving (in my opinion). She’s an amazing character and I loved the ending!

Favorite Quote:

“Be thankful that you will get a clean, painless death. I’m sure the other abominations will die in agony.”

#FridayReads – Tribe of the Snow Tiger by @CYallowitz is Spectacular! #IARTG #SFF #bookreview

Tribe of the Snow Tiger

Title: Tribe of the Snow Tiger (Legends of Windemere, #10)

Author: Charles E. Yallowitz

Genre: Epic Fantasy, Fantasy Series

Book Blurb:

The pursuit of the temples keeping Baron Kernaghan contained has led the champions to the Snow Tiger Tribe’s territory.  More importantly, Timoran Wrath has returned to Stonehelm and his deepest secret is about to come to light.  With Luke, Nyx, and Dariana by his side, the wise and noble barbarian will answer for past mistakes.  Timoran’s life is in the hands of his people, many of which are not happy that he survived his exile.  Unwilling to let their friend face his punishment alone, the other champions are prepared to defend him in the savage court of King Edric.

Unfortunately, events will unfold to reveal more than anyone involved could have imagined.

While Timoran fights for his freedom, one of the champions’ oldest enemies is preparing to battle for her entire world.  Queen Trinity has been given an ultimatum: Lead the chaos elves against the barbarians and kill Nyx or all of her people will be wiped out.  With the fate of an entire species on her shoulders, Trinity is deadlier and more driven than ever.  The respect that she holds for her rival will be pushed aside as two of the most powerful mortals in Windemere unleash their full power in what the Baron demands to be their final encounter.

Ever since Timoran Wrath debuted in Family of the Tri-Rune, he has been a constant source of stability for the champions.  His strength and wisdom has seen them through all of their adventures, which is why the 10th volume of Legends of Windemere is a turning point for all of the heroes.  Timoran will need his friends to get him out of trouble and they will not have his guidance or even his cooperation at times.  This is a big turning point for him because he has remained loyal to his tribe even in exile, but several revelations are going to challenge his honorable core.

Loyalty and honor are very big factors in this adventure because they are challenged for so many of the characters in Tribe of the Snow Tiger.  Does Timoran retain his honor by holding to his tribe’s traditions or does he focus on his loyalty to his friends?  Will Luke, Nyx, and Dariana remain by his side or agree to leave him behind?  Is Queen Trinity more loyal to the Baron, herself, or her own people?

My Review:

If you’re a fan of epic fantasy and looking for an in-depth action-orientated adventure with a cast of intriguing characters, look no further than this book.

Don’t be frightened by the fact that it’s book #10 in the Legends of Windemere series. Before reading this, I had only read book one. This book can be read as a standalone and the author provides background info on each character so you don’t feel lost.

My first impression after reading this book: WOW! Not since reading Lord of the Rings have I been completely immersed in a book. From the characters to the setting, from the action to the plot progression, this book has it all.

There’s three main plot lines to this book and each one is captivating. I won’t go into detail about them (I don’t do spoilers) other than to say well done, Yallowitz. The author reveals details like breadcrumbs leading to an explosive conclusion with characters I grew to either love or hate.

Charles Yallowitz is a talented storyteller and if you’re looking for a standalone or a series, you’re missing out if you don’t read this one first. I can’t wait for the next one but in the meantime will definitely read books 2-9.

Favorite Character: Nyx. I love how complex she is and how she lets her emotions get the better of her. She’s a feisty yet powerful female and kudos to Yallowitz for creating such a strong, real character.

Favorite Quote:

“Even if I have to raze Stonehelm to the ground and blast this tribe out of my way, I’m getting us out of here.” – Nyx

Mrs. N Unveils Her Top 5 #Fantasy Series #amreading #books

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round Up! As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of fantasy. It all started at the tender age of five. My mother introduced me to the fantasy genre and I never looked back. I’m also a huge fan of fantasy series books because it means I can totally gorge on a particular world and escape the constraints of Earth 2016. So, here are my top five fantasy series of all time and I’m listing book one so you can start at the beginning:

The Colour Of Magic: (Discworld Novel 1) (Discworld series) by Terry Pratchett

In the beginning there was…a turtle.

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place which might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules.

But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. Unfortunately, the person charged with maintaining that survival in the face of robbers, mercenaries and, well, Death, is a spectacularly inept wizard…

The Fellowship of the Ring: The Lord of the Rings, Part 1 by J. R. R. Tolkien

Continuing the story begun in The Hobbit, this is the first part of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, featuring the definitive text and a detailed map of Middle-earth.

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power – the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring – the ring that rules them all – which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s great work of imaginative fiction has been labelled both a heroic romance and a classic fantasy fiction. By turns comic and homely, epic and diabolic, the narrative moves through countless changes of scene and character in an imaginary world which is totally convincing in its detail.

Beginning of a Hero (Legends of Windemere Book 1) by Charles E Yallowitz

Every hero must take the first courageous step into adventure. For Luke Callindor, it’s more of a blind stumble.

Depending more on bravery than common sense, Luke sets out to protect a royal heir who is attending the prestigious Hamilton Military Academy. With a demonic assassin in the shadows, the determined warrior will have to think on his feet to defend his charge. If only he waited long enough to find out which student is the hidden noble.

With Luke’s dream on the horizon and a deadly enemy on his path, how will he transform from a reckless adventurer to a true hero of Windemere?

The full text of the novel

This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love. Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear.

A natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind. To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly–she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.

Pearseus, Rise of the Prince (Book 1 of the Pearseus epic fantasy series) by Nicholas C. Rossis

“Pearseus does for ancient Greece what Game of Thrones did for Medieval England.”

Three hundred years after humans crash land on Pearseus, Styx, the Capital’s cruel ruler, learns of a dark prophecy: Cyrus, a young boy, will one day slay her. She imprisons him, but days before his execution he escapes with the help of the First, the planet’s native inhabitants. On their way to safety, nightmarish monsters attack. Cyrus flees, scared and alone, until a pair of First warriors rescue him and spirit him away to the mysterious Old Woman.

All Cyrus wants is to reunite with his family. Excerpt –

There are plenty of handholds and the moonlight makes the first leg of the climb easier than Luke had feared. It is only after three hours of rapid ascent that their journey slows to an agonizing crawl. Powerful winds whip at the tired pair and threaten to launch them off the mountain. Many times a gust strikes the climbers from the back to beat them against the stone like an angry child pounding on a toy. Heavier and more experienced, Lodur swiftly adapts to the changes and continues to push forward without losing much of his momentum. The lighter forest tracker is not as lucky as he struggles to grip the stone, which has become more fragile thanks to years of battering winds. Several times, Luke’s hands slip and he nearly falls off the mountain, his quick reflexes the only things that save him from a painful demise. Catching his breath after one of these near disasters, the half-elf watches his guide scale the cliffs with a speed that he cannot hope to match.

“Please tell me we don’t have to get to the top of this!” Luke shouts, praying that the barbarian’s keen ears can pick up his voice. With no response, the champion goes back to climbing against the winds. “I can’t believe the witness has scaled this thing repeatedly for all these years. There has to be a secret passage or something. Maybe Lodur was never told of the safer path and he isn’t fully trusted. He said to avoid the caves, but it couldn’t hurt to stick my head in one and give a listen.”

Luke clambers onto the nearest ledge where he sees a gaping hole in the stone, the cave big enough for a barbarian to enter without crouching. A mournful whisper emanates from the opening, but the forest tracker is sure it is nothing more than the wind. Taking a few steps into the darkness, he is surprised to find that the sounds from outside are already muffled. Seeing with his ears, Luke gets a mental image of a tunnel that goes deep into the mountain. Small forms flit around in the distance and it takes him a few seconds to recognize them as harmless bats. Dripping water and chirping insects help to fill in the rest of the terrain, but he finds nothing dangerous to explain his companion’s warning.

“Wonder why we have to avoid these?” he softly asks, rubbing his stiff fingers. Something moves nearby and Luke catches the glimmer of a large beast on the ceiling. “Had to open my mouth.”

The pointy-eared creature remains motionless as Luke silently backs toward the exit. With a slow exhale, the half-elf takes a long step that nearly brings him out of the darkness. He is almost at the cliff when the beast hisses like a cat and pounces. Tracking his breath, the black-furred lynx bounds around the warrior and tries to bite him in the throat. With no time to draw his sabers, Luke keeps the knee-high predator at bay by throwing it over his head and spinning away from a swipe at his head. Desperate to escape and catch up to Lodur, he kicks the beast in the face with enough force to knock it off the cliff. Rushing to the edge, he is stunned to see the animal spread its limbs and reveal thin membranes along its sides. Riding the powerful winds, the lynx lands on the mountainside and uses its long, metallic claws to run along the uneven stone. It jumps over Luke’s head before he can react and glides back toward the warrior, the predator’s teeth aiming for his neck.

A knife strikes the flying lynx in the side, piercing the heart and killing it instantly. The limp body crashes into the half-elf, who nearly slips off the cliff and gulps at the view of how far he has to fall. His hand is grabbed by Lodur, the barbarian roughly yanking him back onto stable ground. With no other weapons on him, the old warrior retrieves his knife from the dead animal and haphazardly cleans it on his soiled shirt. With a powerful shove, he knocks Luke against the wall and corners the champion, his face a mask of brewing rage.

“I told you to stay away from the caves,” Lodur whispers, his reddish brown eyes scanning the sky. A brief sound to his right makes the barbarian sweat and he carefully listens for it to repeat. “Unlike the witness, we aren’t welcomed here. That’s why the tunnels are off-limits and we’re forced to climb up the side. If you were patient, we would have made it to the cabin just before dawn. Now we have a problem.”

“The lynx is dead and they don’t run in packs,” Luke argues, his senses picking up on several forms coming around the mountain. The whipping wind and an eerie stillness to the approaching figures makes it difficult to identify them beyond the fact that they are huge. “What exactly is going on?”

“The true masters of the Stone Asp Mountains have arrived and they don’t like trespassers.”

“Don’t be vague. Who or what are the true masters?”

“Rocs.”

“Oh . . . Is that all?”

Legends of Windemere: The Mercenary Prince by @CYallowitz #bookpromo #IARTG #epicfantasy

Mercenary Prince Cover

Title– Legends of Windemere: The Mercenary Prince

Author– Charles E. Yallowitz

Genre– Sword & Sorcery, Epic Fantasy

Book Blurb

Delvin Cunningham has left the champions.
Lost to his tribe in the Yagervan Plains, fear and shame have kept the former Mercenary Prince away from his homeland. With his confidence crumbling, he has decided to return and bring closure to his past. Reuniting with his old friends, Delvin’s timing could not be worse as a deadly campaign is brewing within Yagervan’s borders. Dawn Fangs are on the march and these powerful vampires are determined to turn the entire region into a graveyard.

To protect his family, friends, and two homelands, Delvin will have to push his doubt away and become the cunning Mercenary Prince once again.

Excerpt-

Sitting in the center of a deforested valley, Fort Journeyman is a base for the mercenaries and bounty hunters that work throughout Ralian. The thick walls glisten with the enchanted lacquer that protects the logs from the area’s constant rain. Even on the calmer days, the ground is nothing more than mud and nobody stands still when outside because they fear getting trapped in the muck. Wooden gazebos are found at every intersection, which are surrounded by canopied stalls designed to take advantage of those who take refuge in the simple structures. The larger buildings resemble cabins of various shapes and sizes, but they all have slanted roofs with metal gutters that are maintained by a local group of halflings. Chimneys are constantly puffing out smoke from the fireplaces that warm the homes and businesses, the need for kindling making wood as valuable as gold. It is not uncommon for meals and lodging to be paid for with lumber or for the locals to volunteer as guards to earn some extra tinder rations.

Delvin wrinkles his nose at the smell of garbage that fills the air when the rain is nothing more than a gentle trickle. To avoid being recognized, he keeps his cloak around his body and bends his cowl further over his head while waiting for Tzefira to finish her dealings. A few rough-looking elves eye the pair as they come out of an herbalist shop, but the warriors move away when the Mercenary Prince pats his bastard sword and growls. His attention shifts to the tavern at the end of the street where he plans on beginning the search for his old friends. As if taunting him, the rain turns into a rare sprinkle that the citizens take advantage of. People rush through the wide street, only a few keeping their cloaks on as they try to reach their destination or the next awning. The calm lasts for five minutes before a fresh downpour beats on the rooftops and drenches those that were not fast enough.

“You should have made a run for it,” Tzefira says as she finishes placing gold coins on the counter.

I’d Like to Introduce You to… Charles E. Yallowitz #author #fantasy #amreading

Love high fantasy like Lord of the Rings? You’re going to adore  Legends of Windemere series by Charles E. Yallowitz. He sat down with me for an interview. My favorite part is when he reveals what he wants put on his tombstone. LOL! Classic! 🙂 Take it away, Charles!

  1. Do you have any odd writing habits?

I few habits I have is that I need music or a bottle of seltzer nearby, but I don’t know if those are odd. I write in present tense third person, which many people have pointed out is an odd style. In high school, I kept jumping tenses and was told to pick one and stick with it. The result was that I went with present tense and nobody told me it was odd until 2012 when I published my first book. That’s probably tied with the lucky stapler I’ve had since college that doesn’t even work. Last time I tried, the thing didn’t really work and I had to bend the stapler by hand.

  1. How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Names are very important in my books and that’s usually one of my starting points when I create a character. I have a vague idea of their role, but I hunt through baby name books and sites to find a good name with meaning. That ends up locking down a surname and helping with the personality. Being in fantasy, the name also needs to make sense for the species of the character. For example, having an Orc named Luigi VonKillemall would be more of a joke and all seriousness would be eliminated as soon as he was introduced.

  1. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’m hoping to have finished and self-published Legends of Windemere and maybe the next series by that time. I plan on continuing the full-time author career. If I’m lucky then I might have a traditional contract at that time, but I’m content with staying as an indie author. I really would like to be in a position where my wife and I can have our own place too.

  1. Are you a plotter or a pantster?

I’m more of a plotter than a pantster, but I definitely have some of the latter in me. I make character profiles, plot summaries, and outlines before I sit down to work on the actual book. Yet, the outline gets altered as I write because that’s where the character personalities come out and the world takes on more details. So I always leave space for changes because what is a good idea in my head during an outline might not make any sense in the book.

  1. Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?

I do have trouble with sex scenes, which is why I tend to do the lead up and aftermath only. The flirting and making out parts feel like they’re where the real emotion and heat can be felt. The actual act is rather unnecessary in my stories since they are focused more on action and character development outside of a bed. Kind of connected to this, I have a lot of trouble writing scenes that involve or refer to rape. It’s a very uncomfortable situation to write about even when it ends up getting thwarted.

  1. What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I’m currently working on the book in the Legends of Windemere series while taking breaks to jot down notes for future series. I have up to Book 8 written and in the various stages of editing. So the next project will probably be tackling Book 9 after my son’s Holiday Recess is over. If I’m feeling up to it, I might even start writing the prologue before the forced vacation.

  1. Do you drink? Smoke? What’s your vice?

I drink every now and then, but I’m not big into it like I was in college. I’ve tried cigars a few times with terrible results. I simply don’t like it. So my big vice is fast food like pizza, Subway, and anything that comes in a combo meal.

  1. What do you want your tombstone to say?

Either “He died as he lived. Eating pizza.” or “Here lies a man who crafted a world of dreams.”  Right now I’m preferring the first one.

  1. If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I’m always torn between telekinesis and winged flight. Telekinesis would be cool because I could use it to mimic other powers like flight and invulnerability. Though I might be thinking of psychokinesis since I always get those two mixed up. Winged flight would just be fun because it seems like it would be peaceful up there. I wouldn’t have to worry about traffic when I go out to do errands too.

  1. If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

Some kind of dog. Mostly because I have a bizarre level of loyalty that is rather difficult to break. I’m usually willing to help friends even if I have to put my own stuff on the back burner. The exception is if it causes a conflict with something I want to do with my son who tends to get top priority. The downside of this is that I also tend to remain loyal to negative people for a lot longer than I should. I also like belly rubs.

  1. Do you have any scars? What are they from?

I have a scar on my left wrist and right forearm. Both are faint and are from cooking incidents. I caught myself on the edge of the oven while taking dinner out.

Charles has given us an excerpt to savor. Please read for yourself why he is one of my favorite authors right now:

Excerpt from Prodigy of Rainbow Tower

The closest demon is a few yards away from the doorway when it hears a low hum from behind the wooden portal. Nimby is just as shocked as the creature when a stampeding Bessaria bashes through the door. The sheep is covered in metal armor that includes a studded steel plate on her head. It is this molded metal that sends all of the wooly fury of Bessaria along the spine of the demon when she collides with her enemy’s forehead. The creature gurgles and flails from the impact as its broken body swiftly repairs itself.

“I’m not being left out of this one,” Fritz announces from atop his noble steed.

The gnome is also covered in armor plating and he has a large shield connected to the gauntlet on his left arm. His main weapon, which is on his back, does not resemble anything that the sailors and his friends have ever seen. The device has several triggers that look like they came off multiple crossbows, but the weapon resembles nothing more than a collection of long pipes attached to a curved handle. A thick cylinder with a plus sign at both ends is fitted into a groove above the triggers.

“The hell is that, old gnome?” Nimby asks.

“My daughter and I never got around to naming some of these things, but I know most of this stuff explodes,” Fritz proudly declares as the sheep rears back and kicks at the confused demons. “Bessaria! For the honor of invention!”

The gnome kicks his steed in the sides and the sheep charges toward its enemies. One of the demons attempts to hit Fritz with some ink while another leaps to knock him off Bessaria. The sticky projectile splashes against his shield before he feels the other demon pounce on him. He hits a boot-shaped button on his belt as Bessaria collides with the demon it previously hit. Fritz lets his leg armor stay with the saddle as he slips off his mount, the gnome making sure to keep the shield between him and the slavering monster.

“The leg armor saddle release sticks for a second, but it’s still usable. Commencing test of shield,” Fritz says as he pushes against the shrieking creature.

“Tests? Is that Fritz? What’s going on?” Luke asks before his fingers slip from the slick wood and he falls into the cold river. The half-elf is barely able to keep his head above the water as the defense spell continues to deflect him off the side of the ship.

“Luke!” Nimby screams, feeling the rough pull on the rope.

“I can’t get out of the water!”

The halfling braces his feet and pulls on the rope with all of his strength. “Hurry up, Fritz!”

The gnome slaps a button on his shoulder and the shield makes a wild screech before launching into the air. The demon is still holding the metal disc, which flies passed the crow’s nest and explodes with a thunderous blast. Proud of the successful test, Fritz ignores the twitching monster parts that replace the rain falling from the sky. He whistles for Bessaria to get out of the way before he swings his strange weapon off his back. The device releases an onslaught of silver streaks into the nearest creature until it is covered in hundreds of Gnomish throwing disks. The smell of oil carries on the wind as Fritz flips the weapon onto its side and puts his finger on another trigger.

“Too bad this gear is one time use. I’ll have to work on that.”

A pull of the second trigger releases a tongue of white fire that ignites the demon. Its brother watches in fear as the panicked monster twitches and burns where it stands. The remaining demon turns to leap off the ship into the calm river when Bessaria stomps her foot and a dart from her knee armor hits the creature in the back. The dart does not stop her target from diving off the ship and trying to escape.

“You’re going to let it go?” Captain Higgs asks in irritated confusion.

“Good job, Bessaria!” Fritz says, unaware of the sea elf’s question. “Commencing final test and initiating the Ram Cannon. I think we’re at a safe distance.”

The push of a button on Bessaria’s rump plate causes the pieces of her flank armor to swing up and out. They click together to form a stubby cannon that the poor beast struggles to keep steady. Fritz reaches for the weapon and aims it toward the open space in front of the ship before ripping a flint cord out of the cannon’s backside. A deafening boom shakes the River Scout as a ball of fire leaves the weapon, the projectile arching toward the river. The force sends Bessaria flying backwards where she crashes into Nimby, the sheep bleating in fear and discomfort.
