John Sibley Allen died in battle from a wound in the back, the bullet fired by the turncoat, Beauregard Dudley. The traitor’s reincarnation is Autumn the Interloper’s first dinner guest. Sib bedevils her date and annoys her with fleeting, phantom touches, certain he can frighten her away as he did previous purchasers. As time marches on, her resident ghost becomes more appealing while her suitor, Beau, pales in comparison. Autumn finds her ability to love didn’t perish in the divorce that sent her south seeking a fresh start.

Excerpt —

Autumn climbed the stairs to the dusty attic.  No trepidation followed her. Since she’d moved into the house, she’d planned an excursion into its past.  For some reason, her irritating spook had been absent this morning.  She had to admit that she missed having her coffee poured and a nice good morning greeting when she forced her eyes open, but she was now on an adventure that she’d rather not share.

She rambled around, stirring up a cloud of centuries old dust, and in the corner she found a lovely old leather trunk with the brass lock open.  Cautiously because of its age, she lifted the top and gazed at a stack of women’s clothing, surprisingly intact.  With careful fingers, she lifted a beautiful dress and held it up to her. The billowed sleeves were short and a shawl collar finished the bodice.  Strings of pearls tucked the emerald overskirt over a beige embroidered underskirt.  If she weren’t afraid of damaging the garment, she was sure she could fit into it.  The full skirt would accommodate her hips and the tiny waist looked as if it would close around her. The romantic she chained deep inside warmed her. What would it have been like to have lived in that elegant time?

In an age of smart phones and tablets, she stood for a moment contemplating the past.  The temptation was almost too much for her, but she’d started to fold the dress back into its resting place when a hand landed on her shoulder.

Sib’s voice was soft and tender. “The dress belonged to my mother.  She wore it at a ball before the war.  It appears to be in passable condition. Why don’t you try it on?  I’ve imagined you so attired.”

“I’m a Northerner, remember? I’m surprised you offer your mother’s gown to me.” She turned, the green frock draped over her arm. “Where have you been anyway?”

“Here. All the time. I was simply playing along with your game of asking for my disappearance.”

She stiffened. “Don’t play games with me.  My mother used to do that. It was disturbing and hurtful to a child.”

“You reveal more of yourself every moment, and I’m enjoying getting to know you.  Very well, I’ll share something about me.  My father—what do you call it today?—cheated on my mother. More than once.. I’d hear her crying at night. Thus, I would have been true to my wife.” Eyes sad, he nodded at the dress.  “I’d like to see you in that, Autumn.  We are becoming friends. She would have approved.  I’ll assist with the buttons.”

“Turn your back. I’ll have to get undressed.” She motioned at him. “I’ve no desire for a ghost to see me in my bra and panties.”

He chuckled, his big grin enticing. “Such modesty. Actually, I was anticipating that view.  Anyway, I’ve seen you in your underwear before.”

“You Peeping Tom!” She accused, shaking a fist at him.  “Will I have no privacy? Do you follow me to the bathroom, too?”

“No, Ma’am.”  He shook his head, his hair moving in soft waves.  “I was simply in my bedroom when you changed into your nightgown.”

“It’s not your bedroom. This is my house, and don’t you forget it.” She glared at him.

He snapped a smart military salute. “Yes, commander.”

Angels: Who Are They Anyway? A Guest Post by @LNightingale #angels #FridayReads #giveaway

Wings

In my research for Gylded Wings, I discovered a book simply called Angels written by Malcolm Godwin. This book is a wealth of information about the subject, presented in an interesting and witty writing style. Even the character and seals of some of the more famous angels are given, and he goes into detail about questions you didn’t know you had, for instance, the identity of the Watchers or Shining Ones.

Who the hell are they? Choirboys of the Ninth House, aka the Grigori mentioned in the Book of Enoch (another interesting find!), they were angels sent to Earth to teach Man. Unfortunately, they were a little too zealous in the performance of their jobs and taught the use and design of weapons.  There is one mention of them in the Bible, King James Version, in Genesis 6:2: That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

Have you ever wondered where your guardian angel stands in the heavenly scheme of things? Well, Mr. Godwin can tell you!

According to the Hebrews, the universe is a hierarchy. The Christians adopted this model of the Cosmos in which God is both at the center of the Cosmos and the highest point of the hierarchy. Entities radiate outward from His Presence, some being close to the center while others move further and further away from the Divine Source of Light and Love.

Let’s look at the Nine Choirs of angels:

Highest Triad

  1. Seraphim
  2. Cherubim
  3. Thrones

Middle Triad

  1. Dominations
  2. Virtues
  3. Powers

Lowest Triad

  1. Principalities
  2. Archangels
  3. Angels

Guardian angels would be of the Lowest Triad, therefore, further from the center of the Cosmos and closer to Man himself.

In Gylded Wings, Gyldan opens the story as an angel. When Brit rescues from his own dimension and takes him to Earth, amazing powers manifest. This as well as his appearance lead the angels on Earth, called Guardians, to believe he is of a much higher Order.

Guardians are of the Tenth Order, created after Armageddon to protect Man from the Fallen Angels who’d tried to seize Heaven in the Second War in Heaven.

This is the angel mythos I used in Gylded Wings. There are a lot of angel books, and each author has his/her own take on the lore.

There are three books I recommend to anyone interested in angelic lore or in writing an angel book:  Angels by Malcolm Godwin; Dictionary of Angels; and the thrilling Book of Enoch (an early John Grisham-type novel that is part of the Apocrypha not the Bible) in which the Prophet Enoch goes to a heavenly court to defend the Grigori.

Thanks for having me as your guest today. I’m giving away a free pair of angel earrings (US only) plus an e-book (International). To enter, click here:

Excerpt

The sound I’d anticipated snapped me to attention, a slow, uneven click of high heels halting me in the shadows.

“There you are,” I whispered.

A lone woman staggered into my path. The doomed creature reeked of sex and whiskey.  Whoring and boozing weren’t reasons for a fiery execution, but I saw into her black soul.  Two years ago, she’d tossed her illegitimate child into a garbage dumpster and walked away from the screaming infant without a backward glance.

She’d make an excellent demon.

I stepped free of the darkness.  My hapless quarry glanced up and stumbled to a breathless halt, watching me.  Fearing me.  I laughed at her doe-in-the-headlights expression, lifted my hands, and loosed the power.  Lightning shot from my fingertips.  The white bolts struck, engulfing her.  She twitched and flopped on her feet for a split second.  In a fall of gray snow, she disintegrated.  Humans and angels die differently.  Daniel had perished in a shower of sparks and trail of colored smoke.  Ashes to ashes, the woman had returned to dust.

“See you in Hell.”  I saluted the powder drifting away on an ocean breeze.

Whistling The Devil Went Down To Georgia, I hooked my thumbs in my pockets and continued my journey of self-discovery.  Tonight, I’d already had sex in a bathroom with a married woman, hurt a sweet girl’s feelings, and French-fried a woman.  What else could a devil do on a Friday night?

Excerpt

The lady flipped her hood back, and I stopped breathing.  In her olive wool cape, she looked like a wood nymph, at once young and innocent but wise.  Dark hair curled around an oval face.  Without a trace of fear, big, beautiful eyes held my gaze.  She didn’t belong to this dim, cruel world, and I ached merely to touch her.

Her lips parted on a soft exhalation. “You’re an ang—Malak.”

If only I could return her smile, but Ragnor would slice me in half.   I was forbidden to glance at her, but couldn’t take my eyes off a vision so perfect I might have conjured her, even to the scent of the forest and rain.  A memory of Miriam assaulted me, but I was helpless to control my feelings.  Never had a woman affected me as this one did.  I felt awkward, terribly aware of my worn clothes and the wings arched behind me, yet giddy and aroused.

My eyes offered the smile my lips were forbidden.  “Yes, My Lady.”

She tilted her head to look up at me.  Her gaze drifted over my wings, my face, flicked lower.  “In the North, we have heard of the Malak singers.  What’s your name?”

I was too shocked to answer.  Like an addle-pated fool, I gaped at her, and she laughed.

“Stand aside, Gyldan.”  The giant slammed his paw against my shoulder, throwing the weight of my wings to the left, and I lost my balance.

The lady’s hand shot out to steady me.  Ragnor wedged his body between us.  I stumbled into the wall.  As I righted myself, I glimpsed an angry expression on Lady Hamlin’s face.

She stepped past Ragnor and touched my arm.  “Are you all right?”

Excitement trembled over my entire body.  “Yes, My Lady.”

“You’ll see the freaks perform tonight.”  Ragnor shot me a dark frown, gesturing for her to follow.  “Come, Lady Hamlin, I’ll guide you to your chambers.”

“Gyldan.”  The sprite grinned as she smoothed a dark curl back from her face.  “Do you know the way?”

“No, My Lady.”  I was forced to lie to save my hide.  “I have never been in this part of the castle before.”

“Off with you then.”  A graceful hand shooed me along.  “Be about your business, and I shall go about mine.”

She had brushed me off like an insect on her sleeve.   What had I expected?  That she would feel the same overwhelming attraction I felt?

Excerpt

Though my other brother held the sword, he winged a retreat.  I did not know what had happened, or if I could command the lightning again.

Neither did he.

“What of the freak now, Adamus? Will you risk your weapon against mine?”

He brandished his sword. “You bastard.  You murdered your brother.”

Wing beats slow, I flew toward him.  “He was a stranger intent on slaying me.”

I spread four wings to their fullest.  Adamus’ eyes widened, fear written on his face.  He gripped his sword tighter.  “By the Beast! Two pairs of wings.”

My body was a hard-plucked string, power humming through me.  I smiled at my brother, drove my four wings down, swept them up, and attacked.  The enmity that had festered between us must end…in defeat for one of us.

Pacing below, Brit screamed, “Gyldan, the gate is closing.  Come down now or we’re trapped.  We won’t stand a chance. I hear horses.”

On the horizon, the rumble of hooves and clouds of dust announced a troop of riders.  Queen Mary had not only sent her winged army but her cavalry.  Sunlight glinted on armor and the red and black of the horses’ trappings.  I banked hard left and plunged into a reckless descent.  Shouts pursued me.

“Coward,” Adamus barked.  “Fight me!”

My brother waved his sword but made no move to follow.  Knowing such power was mine—that I had dissolved another angel in a shower of sparks—thrilled yet terrified me.  I had never known Daniel.  Now, I never would.

Frantic wing beats pulled me out of the dive.  I glanced over my shoulder as Adamus plummeted into pursuit.  I yearned to turn and fight, but on the ground Brit jumped up and down, waving her arms…and Adamus was my only brother.  The shimmering mirage behind her faded.  She shoved her arm into the dizzying colors, and the limb disappeared to the elbow.

Light glimmered off my wings as I unfurled them to cushion my landing, shifted my weight, and ran toward Brit and the dimming gate.  Adamus’ laughter pursued me.  He sailed toward us.  The cavalry thundered over the crest of a hill.

Excerpt:

“You are not there.” Autumn dropped her book and leapt to her feet, shaking her fist at the apparition standing beside the fireplace.

The frolicking blaze shone through the whatever-he-was lounging by the hearth, his arm stretched along the mantel.  A ceramic clock beside his hand chimed the hour—seven golden notes. Tall candles in brass candlesticks flickered in an eerie fire dance. He appeared to be a Civil War soldier of the South, his opaque uniform gray with a nasty red-stained hole near the heart.  Double rows of gold buttons decorated the coat. Three gold stars and a wreath on the collar glittered in the firelight. No blood spilled from the apparition.  Except for his wound, he looked perfectly healthy—for a dead man!  He nodded and bowed elegantly…as much so as his lost society had been, regardless of the strong backs supporting that way of life.

“Oh, but I am, Miss Hartley.”  He straightened, longish hair gently curling over his face.

A chill raced over her, but she suppressed the tremor of apprehension.  Autumn swallowed hard and adjusted her white cotton blouse.  “I don’t believe in ghosts.  You’re not welcome here. I bought this house and am struggling to pay for it.  Get your Halloween self out of my living room.”

He smiled.  “It’s not 0048alloween, and we share this house.  It was mine, you know, and still is.  I’m willing to share it with you—even if you are a Yankee.  After all, the conflict is over, and I’ll hold no grudge against the Northern aggressors. Even though the South will never surrender.”

“Northern aggressors?”  She inhaled sharply, the vanilla scent of the candles on the dining room table drifting into the living room.  Everything about Allen Hall was beautiful. She loved the house. But this conversation with an arrogant spirit solidified defiance.  “And, for your information, the South did surrender.”

“A point of history.” He shrugged and gave her a condescending glance. “No more.”
