Excerpt

DRACONIERA MOUNTAIN-
THE KINGDOM OF ARACELLY
1238 CE

“Mierta McKinnon.”

The twelve–year–old warlock gave a start, hearing his name announced telepathically. Mierta stood up on shaky legs and brushed his brown bangs out of his green eyes. The room inside Draconiera Mountain was suffocating. Hot springs bubbling up from deep beneath the ground created a dense fog, which pushed down on Mierta’s shoulders. Sweat was already dripping from his brow onto his long dark royal blue robe. His heart raced as he approached a large wooden door. He occasionally glanced over at others who were anxiously waiting their turn, wondering which of those he made eye contact with would succeed.

No matter what happens. No matter what I see. I cannot allow my fears to overcome me, Mierta told himself. I will achieve what I have come to do. I cannot fail. I won’t. I will make Mother and Father proud.

A loud creaking echoed across the room, and the ground shook underneath his feet. Two tall wooden doors opened up to a pathway of complete darkness.

“Step inside,” he heard the dragon say. Mierta swallowed hard and expelled air through his mouth.

Upon entering the pathway, a warm mist rose from below. Water splashed against rocks, and occasional water droplets hit his skin. A faint glow shined in the near distance. He walked towards the glow until he found himself in a large circular cavern. In the centre of this cavern was a short round pedestal. An opening off towards the right appeared as if it was open–aired, and off to the left side was another doorway, which was currently closed.

Mierta gazed up at the source of the glow and caught a glimpse of the magnificent creature standing on a rocky ledge. He could hear his pulse beating in his ears. He felt like his body was paralysed, yet he felt unsteady. His own rapid breathing masked the sound of Lord Kaeto stepping into the light.

Mierta gasped, shielding his eyes against the bright yellow light from Lord Kaeto’s wings, trying to conquer his fear. When his eyes adjusted, he noted the ebony veins that traced a pattern like the rivers in the valley. The veins seemed to pulse with power.

“Lord Kaeto,” Mierta uttered, bowing, keeping his eyes averted to the ground.

Lord Kaeto was the last of his kind—an omniscient ancient breed of telepathic dragons that had been around for longer than any could remember. The residents of the kingdom looked at him as if he were a God, straight from the stories of old.

“Mierta McKinnon. Rise,” he spoke. “It is your time to partici- pate in the Rite of Wands in which your soul shall face the ultimate analysis. You will be taken on a journey of your lifetime, viewing por- tions of your past, present, and future. Do you concede?”

“Yes,” Mierta answered, his voice breaking.

Love and Mayhem by @Luanna_Stewart + @WildRosePress #historicalromance #romance #Victorian

LoveandMayhem_w11848_750

Title: Love & Mayhem

Author: Luanna Stewart

Genre: Historical Romance, Victorian

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Blurb:

Sybil is happily on the shelf, tending to her sheep. But she fears she’ll depart this life without experiencing physical love, which she suspects is rather enjoyable. When her long-lost fiancé returns from sea, she decides he’s the lucky man who’ll receive her virginity.

Max is eager to return to his sugar plantation and has no intention of remaining long in London. However, he didn’t bargain on a wilful, pretty, exasperating spinster determined to take him to her bed.

He insists on marriage but she wants only his body. Her heart is not part of the deal. Unfortunately, love doesn’t always follow the rules.

Excerpt:

“I say, Sybil. Are you feeling well?” Oswald frowned. “You’ve gone all pink. Arabella, perhaps she should lie down. I don’t want her falling ill at the table.”

Sybil jerked at her brother’s words. “I’m finding it a trifle warm in here, aren’t you?”

“It is a little close, yes.” Max had come to her rescue, and she loved him for it.

Love?

Affection, surely. And desire, most definitely.

She moved to the window and shoved unsuccessfully against the sash.

“Let me be of assistance.” Max reached around her and raised the window. He let his hand rest on her upper arm and he leaned closer. His breath tickled her ear. “I love watching you become aroused. Arrange for us to be alone later. I’ll help you to relax.” He walked away. She pushed the window up as far as it would go and leaned out. The frigid breeze was heaven against her heated skin. Heavens above.

Paddington’s Finest Hour by Michael Bond and @HarperCollinsCh #kidlit #bookreview #Netgalley

Paddingtons Finest Hour

Title: Paddington’s Finest Hour

Author: Michael Bond (Author), Peggy Fortnum (Illustrator), R. W. Alley (Illustrator)

Genre: Children’s Books, Fiction

Book Blurb:

A brand-new title from Michael Bond chronicling new and exciting adventures of Paddington Bear!

Somehow Paddington always finds himself in extraordinary situations, so it is no surprise when he appears in a popular TV cooking show, finds himself on a stage giving one of his hard stares to a hypnotist, and performing some precarious tricks at Mr. Gruber’s birthday party.

For nearly sixty years, Paddington has enchanted readers around the world with his numerous misadventures and earnest good intentions. From master storyteller Michael Bond, and with interior illustrations by R. W. Alley, this new Paddington adventure will charm and delight readers of all ages.

My Review:

I’ve been a huge fan of Paddington Bear ever since I was four years old. I read all of the books I could get my hands on and as time went by, the more I cherished my Paddington books (still own them). When I heard that Harper Collins UK was releasing a brand-new Paddington book (from a friend on Goodreads), I requested it on Netgalley. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be the same as the classic Paddington adventures of my youth but was thrilled to hear that this was written by Michael Bond before his passing.

Paddington and the Browns are back for seven all-new adventures and they include some delightful mishaps such as pouring rain and the post, gardening, a cooking show and more. The chemistry and whimsy are infused in Paddington’s Finest Hour for a whole new generation of readers. I loved it and read it over and over again. Whether you are a child or a grown-up, you’ll fall in love with Paddington all over again. The illustrations are beautiful and reminiscent of the classic illustrations. A must own and read!

Many thanks to Harper Collins UK and Netgalley for giving me an ARC in the hopes I’d review it.

Favorite Character/Quote: Paddington. He’s one of my favourite literary characters and reading this book reminded me of reconnecting with a childhood friend. No matter how much time has gone by, they’re still lovely.

Not since Harry Potter, have I read an engrossing paranormal series for kids and adults. If you like all things Potter, give Pepper and the Supernatural Pet-Sitter series a try. You won’t regret it! – N. N. Light

Title: The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Magic Thief (Book 1)

Author: Diane Moat

Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Every animal can talk to you. You just have to know how to listen.

Pepper Neely is better at this than most, especially because she is in charge of pet sitting all the familiars in her neighborhood. A familiar is a pet magically linked to a witch or warlock. As a gnome, Pepper is no stranger to spells and sorcery. She also knows that, despite their special name, familiars aren’t all that different from regular animals. They get anxious when separated from their people, so Pepper uses her special gnome powers to calm them down. She watches Cranky the high-strung ferret, Frank the laid-back parrot, King Arthur the elderly tortoise, and many others.

Then, something terrible begins happening to the familiars. Someone is stealing their magic! It not only prevents Pepper from communicating with them but breaks their magical connection with their people. When King Arthur’s magic is stolen, his owner’s powers stop working too. Pepper can sense that the tortoise is very scared.

In order to protect the animal’s magic, Pepper decides to track down the culprit. With the help of her best friend, Luna, and her brother, Jax, Pepper fights to protect all of the special pets.

Excerpt:

Luna focused on the candle to her far left. Ten minutes later, the candle was still going strong. Pepper bit her lip, feeling sorry for Luna. She turned to stare at the uncooperative candle, and imagined a little wind blowing the candle out. Puff.

Suddenly, the uncooperative candle blinked out as if someone had snuffed it with their fingers.

Supernatural Pet Sitter The Curse

Title The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Curse (Book 2)

Author Diane Moat

Genre Middle Grade Adventure/Fantasy

Book Blurb

Pepper Neely is no stranger to dangerous situations. In The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Magic Thief, the young gnome defeated an evil witch who was stealing magic from the Familiars that Pepper took care of. She wouldn’t have survived without the intervention of a pack of werewolves, who endured painful, fiery spells to save Pepper’s life.

Now Pepper is determined to repay the werewolves for their sacrifice, no matter what it takes. She decides to break the centuries-old curse that keeps them in wolf form. At first, she keeps her plans a secret, but it’s not long before Pepper realizes she will need all the help she can get to end this curse. Magic is everywhere as enemy witches cast dangerous spells to stop Pepper.

Pepper and her family must trust the local witches and work together with them to fend off the deadly spells, find the curse, and break it—before the hostile witches get the best of them.

Excerpt

Scattered around the room were seven women, including Momma Fran and Maggie. An older version of Maggie nodded to them. “Welcome, Neelys. As you know, I am Naomi, of the Samson coven. We have gathered in response to your request to meet. So without further delay, I invite you to speak.”

Here I go. Pepper wished she hadn’t eaten that sandwich a few minutes ago, as there was a fifty-percent chance she was about to throw it up, right here. She felt as if she had argued her case a thousand times. Hopefully this would be the last. She tried to think of the wolves as she took a deep breath around the lump in her throat.

Pepper stepped forward and began, “Thank you, Naomi of the Samson coven. I am Pepper Neely of the Neely gnomes. As you know, several months ago, a witch named Kale was caught stealing magic from Familiars. She was caught, in part, thanks to me and my brother, Jax. When she escaped, she came after me, Jax, and my friend, Luna, who is also a witch.” Keep reminding them Luna was saved also.

“Luna was nearly killed by Kale. But instead, three wolves attacked Kale, saving all three of us. The wolves took great risks in doing this, and they were set on fire several times, giving us time to get away. I know without a doubt that the wolves saved Luna, myself, and my brother. I have taken on a blood-debt to pay them back. As part—” Pepper didn’t get to finish before the witches started talking.

“What does that have to do with us?”

“The werewolves are our enemies; nothing will change that.”

“Do you even know what that means? How can your parents—”

“EXCUSE ME!” A male voice from behind Pepper cut through the chaos. It took Pepper a moment to realize it wasn’t her dad or brother. Everyone quieted instantly, looking behind the Neelys. The male voice continued, as a man stepped out into view. “I believe Ms. Neely wasn’t finished.”

Mr. O’Brien! The warlock had vanished after Kale had stolen the magic from from his Familiar, King Arthur. Pepper had thought he needed time to heal from his broken heart. He looked better than the last time she had seen him. He was still thin, but his face didn’t seem as drawn or haunted.

Mr. O’Brien continued. “I apologize for being late, but I believe my invitation was lost in the mail.”

Ritual of the Lost Lamb by @cyallowitz Delves into #DarkFantasy! #bookreview #fantasy #ASMSG

Ritual of the Lost Lamb

Title: Ritual of the Lost Lamb (Legends of Windemere Book 13)

Author: Charles E. Yallowitz

Genre: Fantasy, Epic Fantasy, Dark Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Death is a blessing that the Baron is not ready to bestow upon his precious guest.

In the aftermath of the Baron’s attack, Luke Callindor has disappeared and the only clue is a psychic scream of agony that Dariana cannot ignore. Fearing that a journey to Shayd will start their final battle before they are ready, the champions have devised another way to rescue their friend. With permission from the gods, Nyx has begun the long-sealed Ritual of the Lost Lamb. It is a complicated and exhausting spell, which is made even more difficult by a new enemy whose only goal is to make all of the Baron’s enemies suffer.

It is a race against time where every passing minute brings Luke Callindor one step closer to a fate worse than oblivion.

My Review:

A darkness has fallen on Windemere and even the gods and goddesses aren’t sure what to do. Heated debates ensue as one god pits against another while the Baron looks on gleefully. His rescue is almost at hand and he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Luke Callindor is his prisoner and he intends to wreak as much pain and destruction as possible. How much can a champion take before he gives up the will to live?

Luke’s capture has fragmented the rest of the champions’ spirits as they know deep in their hearts that the final battle is coming and they need Luke’s leadership and strength if they have any hope of defeating the Baron. The group has one goal: rescue Luke using any means necessary. Nyx gathers what is needed to perform the ritual of the lost lamb with the help of the others. Dariana uses what psychic abilities she can to stave off a new enemy (thanks to her father, the Baron) but when the gods ask her to kill a family member, will she be able to or is this another test she’ll fail? Everyone’s lives are at risk in this dark installment of the Legends of Windemere, leading up to the final battle.

There’s a lot of darkness in this book but adds to the contrast between the Baron and the champions. While the Baron and his latest ally unleash death, destruction and pain on everything the champions hold dear, there’s a glimmer of hope. Each champion has the power to defeat the Baron and the only question remains: will they cross the line or will they die trying?

Brilliantly written, this is Yallowitz’s best book yet. He takes us deep into the bowels of darkness, thrusting the champions into unwinnable situations and we, the readers, get to witness it. The torture scenes with Luke were hard to read yet done with a subtlety I found refreshing. The new enemy (won’t say who it is because I don’t want to spoil it for you) gives new meaning to a demented evil creature. The ending was so well done, I applauded. I can’t wait for the final battle!

If you enjoy epic fantasy with a dark side, give this a read. It’s a stand alone (as is each of the books in the series) but I recommend reading the previous books first. Trust me on this.

Favorite Character/Quote: “They think eradicating evil is the way to save the world, but too much good could be just as dangerous. One can really only keep darkness at bay or you risk wasting the limited years that you have been given in complacency. After all, not all of us can ascend.”

It’s #Paranormal/ #ParanormalRomance Day on the #POTL Blog! #books #FridayReads #amreading

fbrup-october-2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. It’s Paranormal/Paranormal Romance Day here on the POTL Blog (review to come later this morning) and I wanted to share with you my top seven all-time favorite paranormal/paranormal romance series. They’re not in any particular order (other than me remembering them) and I highly recommend them. The book titles are for the first book in the series. I’d love to hear your favorites so please comment below.

Midnight Crossroad (A Novel of Midnight, Texas Book 1) by Charlaine Harris

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and the Davy highway. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop with three residents. One is seen only at night. There’s a diner, but people stopping there tend not to linger. There’s a newcomer, Manfred Bernardo, who just wants to work hard and blend in. But Manfred has secrets of his own…

Lucifer’s Daughter (Princess of Hell Book 1) by Eve Langlais

It drives my dad nuts I’m such a goody two shoes, but the fact that I’m a virgin makes smoke pour from his ears. See, I’m determined to save myself for love, but daddy dear, more commonly known as Lucifer, just wants me to stop being an embarrassment. Would it kill you to sin a little?

Maybe he’ll get his wish because I met an intriguing hunk last night in my bar. Could he be the one? He certainly melts my panties like marshmallows over the coals of Hell, but do I dare trust him? My last boyfriend thought he’d gain infamy by killing me. He’s infamous all right. Dad had him mounted on a wall, his version of modern art titled, ‘Touch my baby girl and die’. Cute in a twisted way.

My love life isn’t the only thing I’ve got to worry about. There’s someone threatening the denizens of Hell, and while my daddy says to not worry my pretty little head about it, I an involved because whoever is behind the attacks keeps coming after me.

Bring it. I’m not afraid. Being a princess of Hell means that sometimes I have to grab a demon by the horns and slap it around. It’s what keeps my ass looking great.

Nothing in my life is ever simple, and I blame that on my dad, Lucifer. Assassination attempts, hellhounds, and a rebellion in Hell? A piece of cake compared to the turmoil in my heart. No one ever told me love would be the toughest battle of all.

Sanguinary (Night Shift Book 1) by Margo Bond Collins

Detective Cami Davis and her sexy, cowboy-turned-vampire informant are all that’s standing between humanity and monsters who would rule the world—and all that’s standing between them having a torrid love affair is the fact that he’s an enemy of humanity.

THROUGH DARKEST TEMPTATION

When Dallas police detective Cami Davis joined the city’s vampire unit, she planned to use the job as a stepping-stone to a better position in the department. She didn’t know then what she knows now: A silent war rages between humans and their supposedly pacified predators, and the vampires are winning. With the clock running out on her kind, Cami will do whatever she must to defeat the “Sanguinary.”

Enter Reese Fulton, a disaffected ex-cop and a vampire. She can’t exactly trust him, but with his cowboy boots and good-ole-boy drawl he’s the perfect beard for Cami’s fledgling undercover operation. Yet playing Reese’s Claimed—a vampire’s personal bloodgiver—isn’t as straightforward as she was led to believe. His bite is as enthralling as his dimpled smile, and soon Cami is wondering which will pose more of a challenge: subduing the enemies of humanity…or her own desire.

Bitten (Women of the Otherworld) by Kelley Armstrong

An erotically charged, addictive thriller from the future queen of suspense.

Living in Toronto for a year, Elena is leading the normal life she has always dreamed of, including a stable job as a journalist and a nice apartment shared with her boyfriend. As the lone female werewolf in existence, only her secret midnight prowls and her occasional inhuman cravings set her apart. Just one year ago, life was very different. Adopted by the Pack when bitten, Elena had spent years struggling with her resentment at having her life stolen away. Torn between two worlds, and overwhelmed by the new passions coursing through her body, her only option for control was to deny her awakening needs and escape.

But now the Pack has called Elena home to help them fight an alliance of renegade werewolves who are bent on exposing and annihilating the Pack. And although Elena is obliged to rejoin her “family,” she vows not to be swept up in Pack life again, no matter how natural it might feel. She has made her choice. Trouble is, she’s increasingly uncertain if it’s the right one.

An erotically charged thriller, Bitten will awaken the voracious appetite of every reader, as the age-old battle between man and beast, between human and inhuman forces, comes to a head in one small town and within one woman’s body.

Raven’s Peak (World on Fire Book 1) by Lincoln Cole

A quiet little mountain town is hiding a big problem. When the townsfolk of Raven’s Peak start acting crazy, Abigail Dressler is called upon to discover the root of the evil affecting people. She uncovers a demonic threat unlike any she’s ever faced and finds herself in a fight just to stay alive.

Abigail rescues Haatim Arison from a terrifying fate and discovers that he has a family legacy in the supernatural that he knows nothing about. Now she’s forced to protect him, which is easy, but also to trust him if she wants to save the townsfolk of Raven’s Peak. Trust, however, is something hard to have for someone who grew up living on the knife’s edge of danger.

Can they discover the cause of the town’s insanity and put a stop to it before it is too late?

Slouch Witch (The Lazy Girl’s Guide To Magic Book 1) by Helen Harper

Hard Work Will Pay Off Later. Laziness Pays Off Now.

Let’s get one thing straight – Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she’s probably the last witch in the world who you’d call if you needed a magical helping hand. If it were down to Ivy, she’d spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart’s content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she’s yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hallowed Order of Magical Enlightenment. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order’s noses.

It doesn’t exactly help that she’s been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy’s concerned, he’s a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work.

And if he makes her go to the gym again, she’s definitely going to turn him into a frog.

Fugitive of Magic (Dragon’s Gift: The Protector Book 1) by Linsey Hall

In the city of Magic’s Bend, I protect what’s mine. No matter what.

To the world, I’m a just a Conjurer. To my closest friends, I’m a FireSoul–a dangerous Magica with forbidden powers and a dragon’s soul. The downside? If anyone discovers what I am, I’m dead. So I lay low, kicking butt with my weapons, not my magic.

Things get ugly when I witness the murder of a powerful vampire ally and become the key suspect. Soon, I’m hunted by the sexiest, strongest supernatural I’ve ever met. Ares is an unheard of vampire hybrid, and it’s hard to say if he wants to kiss me or kill me.

I’ve got three days to catch the real killer. The bad news? It will take my forbidden magic to succeed. But can I control it, much less keep my secret with Ares watching my every move? Especially when the stakes get ever higher?

I’m used to protecting others…now I have to protect myself.

Fugitive of Magic is a fast-paced fantasy mystery with a kick-butt heroine, a tough hero, and magic that will blow your socks off.

Friday Book Round-Up Reveals Mrs. N’s Top 20 #sciencefiction/ #fantasy #books! #FridayReads

planet-1404516_1280

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. I’m back from vacation and I noticed that over on Goodreads, they’re celebrating science fiction/fantasy books. So, I thought I’d dive in and list my ten favorite science fiction and ten favorite fantasy books of all time. Many of these books are classics and some are new releases. Let’s start with science fiction.

Top 10 Science Fiction Books –

Ender’s Game (The Ender Quartet series Book 1) by Orson Scott Card  (Author)

Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race’s next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn’t make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender’s skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender’s two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

Ender’s Game is the winner of the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

At the Publisher’s request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Fahrenheit 451: A Novel by Ray Bradbury  (Author)

Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television. When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known. He starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, the fireman has to run for his life.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley  (Author)

Now more than ever: Aldous Huxley’s enduring “masterpiece … one of the most prophetic dystopian works of the 20th century” (Wall Street Journal) must be read and understood by anyone concerned with preserving the human spirit in the face of our “brave new world”

Aldous Huxley’s profoundly important classic of world literature, Brave New World is a searching vision of an unequal, technologically-advanced future where humans are genetically bred, socially indoctrinated, and pharmaceutically anesthetized to passively uphold an authoritarian ruling order–all at the cost of our freedom, full humanity, and perhaps also our souls. “A genius [who] who spent his life decrying the onward march of the Machine” (The New Yorker), Huxley was a man of incomparable talents: equally an artist, a spiritual seeker, and one of history’s keenest observers of human nature and civilization. Brave New World, his masterpiece, has enthralled and terrified millions of readers, and retains its urgent relevance to this day as both a warning to be heeded as we head into tomorrow and as thought-provoking, satisfying work of literature. Written in the shadow of the rise of fascism during the 1930s, Brave New World likewise speaks to a 21st-century world dominated by mass-entertainment, technology, medicine and pharmaceuticals, the arts of persuasion, and the hidden influence of elites.

“Aldous Huxley is the greatest 20th century writer in English.” —Chicago Tribune

Seveneves: A Novel by Neal Stephenson  (Author)

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years.

What would happen if the world were ending?

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . .

Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

Lois Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, including Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

The Key: Project Enterprise Book 1 by Pauline Baird Jones  (Author)

Together, Sara and Kiernan must avoid capture, and deal with their growing attraction for each other, while they search for a mysterious, hidden city on a planet that brings Sara closer to understanding her baffling abilities and her mother’s past.

Don’t miss out on the excitement in this Independent Book Bronze Medal and Dream Realm Awards Winner! Join Sara and Kieran today as they discover where the key is hidden and stop those that would use the secrets left behind by a lost civilization for their own agenda.

Top 10 Fantasy Books –

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien  (Author)

Read the definitive edition of Bilbo Baggins’ adventures in middle-earth in this classic bestseller behind this year’s biggest movie.

The Hobbit is a tale of high adventure, undertaken by a company of dwarves in search of dragon-guarded gold. A reluctant partner in this perilous quest is Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving unambitious hobbit, who surprises even himself by his resourcefulness and skill as a burglar.

Encounters with trolls, goblins, dwarves, elves and giant spiders, conversations with the dragon, Smaug, and a rather unwilling presence at the Battle of Five Armies are just some of the adventures that befall Bilbo.

Bilbo Baggins has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals of children’s fiction. Written by Professor Tolkien for his own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when published.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley  (Author)

In Marion Zimmer Bradley’s masterpiece, we see the tumult and adventures of Camelot’s court through the eyes of the women who bolstered the king’s rise and schemed for his fall. From their childhoods through the ultimate fulfillment of their destinies, we follow these women and the diverse cast of characters that surrounds them as the great Arthurian epic unfolds stunningly before us. As Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar struggle for control over the fate of Arthur’s kingdom, as the Knights of the Round Table take on their infamous quest, as Merlin and Viviane wield their magics for the future of Old Britain, the Isle of Avalon slips further into the impenetrable mists of memory, until the fissure between old and new worlds’ and old and new religions’ claims its most famous victim.

A Wrinkle in Time (A Wrinkle in Time Quintet Book 1) by Madeleine L’Engle  (Author)

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.

“Wild nights are my glory,” the unearthly stranger told them. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I’ll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract.”

A tesseract (in case the reader doesn’t know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L’Engle’s unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O’Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg’s father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.

A Wrinkle in Time is the winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal. It is the first book in The Time Quintet, which consists of A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Portrait of Hannah Fielding and photos of where she writes.

Author Biography

Hannah Fielding is an incurable romantic. The seeds for her writing career were sown in early childhood, spent in Egypt, when she came to an agreement with her governess Zula: for each fairy story Zula told, Hannah would invent and relate one of her own. Years later – following a degree in French literature, several years of travelling in Europe, falling in love with an Englishman, the arrival of two beautiful children and a career in property development – Hannah decided after so many years of yearning to write that the time was now. Today, she lives the dream: writing full time at her homes in Kent, England, and the South of France, where she dreams up romances overlooking breath-taking views of the Mediterranean.

Hannah is a multi-award-winning novelist, and to date she has published five novels: Burning Embers, ‘romance like Hollywood used to make’, set in Kenya; The Echoes of Love, ‘an epic love story that is beautifully told’, set in Italy; and the Andalusian Nights Trilogy – Indiscretion, Masquerade and Legacy – her fieriest novels yet, set in sunny, sultry Spain.

Excerpt:

A certain fantasy played in my head, and I grinned. Cardwell’s childlike innocence gave way to confusion.

“Why are you grinning?”

The kopfkino ground to a halt right before the good part started. “Uh, A-Adriana.” I offered a silent thank you for the cover of darkness so he couldn’t see the flush creeping up. The stutter I couldn’t do anything about.

“Adriana? Whatever for?”

His voice relayed the look of confusion I could barely see, and I babbled to divert his attention. “Remember right after we started shooting, she droned on and on about how we should be filming in Baltimore because it’s a show about Poe—”

Cardwell offered his Vincent impersonation. “‘Five words, Adriana. Soundstage, b-roll, and tax breaks.’ Yeah, that was funny…”

I exhaled my relief, thinking I’d skirted his question.

“But it wasn’t that funny.” Cardwell shifted in his seat and faced me. “Tell me why you were really giggling.”

The flush heated to what felt like boiling point. I pressed my lips together to stop myself from blurting.

“Come on, Izzie.” He angled his head closer. “Distract me from the fact my nose feels like it’s about ready to fall off.”

The wink he shot me told me he was teasing, but my heart jumped to the pit of my stomach anyway. “Great. Play the injured card. Like I don’t feel bad enough already.”

He unbuckled his seat belt and swiveled to look at me, his grin stretching from ear to ear.

Shit. Who could say no to that? “Fine.” I hugged my arms to my chest. “You follow From Poe to Know, right?”

He slung his arm over the back of my seat. “Of course. Everyone does.”

I drummed a beat against my upper arm with my thumb, hoping I didn’t screw up and reveal my secret identity. “Well, a couple of weeks ago, she posed a question asking what people would do if they had thirty minutes alone with you.”

“Not one of her more inspired blogs, but some of the comments were…interesting.”

Cardwell’s reply sounded forced, and I wondered if his cheeks were burning as brightly as mine. “Yeah.” I thought back to the short drinking spree with Delly. “Point is, I now know what I’d do with my thirty minutes of alone time.”

“Oh, yeah?” He scooted closer to the edge of his seat, near enough for me to make out the corners of his mouth twitching. “What’s that?”

“I’d be driving. You’d be sleeping. How’s that for a fantasy?” I tore my eyes from his Medusa gaze. He wouldn’t turn me to stone, but if I kept looking at him, I’d still be doomed.

He tugged lightly on a curl that had come loose from my hair tie. “Wasn’t really what you were thinking, was it?”

“Nope.” My fingers toyed with the cracked, jagged edges of the steering wheel.

He leaned close. “You won’t tell me?”

The hair tie lost its fight, and my curls tumbled down my back. I shivered at his breath on my neck and shook my head. “Not a chance in hell.”

He grinned, his eyes sparkling in the glow of the streetlight. “Guess I’ll have to use my imagination, then.” He cracked open his door. “Come on, fantasy girl. Work calls.”

The Treasure of Gwenlais by Award-Winning @Mtmagee1013M #bookreview #YA #romanticfantasy

The Treasure of Gwenlais

Title: The Treasure of Gwenlais: The Rienfield Chronicles Book 1

Author: M. T. Magee

Genre: Historical Fantasy, Celtic Fantasy, Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

Multi Award Winning International Amazon Bestseller #1 Best Fantasy Romance (not urban) On Listopia “An enchanting love story wrapped in an epic fantasy” -Amazon Reviewer

Can a reluctant Princess fulfill her destiny to heal the torn Kingdoms and the heart of a battle-hardened warrior Prince? Join Laurel on an extraordinary journey of discovery, danger, wonder, and finding a love she only dared dream of. Come with her to find the truth of who she is, and those who will do anything to stop her from making the words of the Olden Scribes a reality. A love story that will leave you breathless and believing in the wonder of Scottish and Irish folklore and fairy tales.

Come and experience the beauty, danger, and romance of an epic historical medieval fantasy that whispers of Celtic legend.

My Review:

I’m a huge romantic fantasy fan and if you throw in Celtic/Scottish folklore within a medieval historical time period, I’m in pure heaven! This is such a book.

Princess Laurel of Gwenlais is out with her mother (the queen) when The Rabkins attack, killing Laurel’s mother and many other women and children. Fleeing for her life and almost killed herself, she escapes death thanks to the quick-thinking Prince Caleb of Heathwin. When Laurel realizes it was Caleb who’s saved her life, she is awe-struck, as she’s had a crush on him for as long as she can remember. But she knows it’s not meant to be, not when their kingdoms continue to feud.

Prince Caleb is tired of war and wants peace for himself and his kingdom. When he rescues Princess Laurel from execution, he realizes she’s special, though he can’t put his finger on it. Maybe it’s the way she treats him, like a god or something, with love in her eyes. He starts falling for her and wonders if she might be the instrument of peace he so craves. Can he let down his guard and give Laurel his heart or will he die trying?

A beautiful, moving fantasy gem with colorful characters, plenty of action and a core message anyone can relate to. Life deals Laurel a tough hand and she’s got to figure out who to trust and whether to follow her destiny. Along the way, she falls in love and while that’s wonderful, she must learn how to grow with Caleb if peace is to happen. The romance was slow-burning and it made my heart swell with emotion.

I loved the Celtic and Scottish folklore in this book. It brought a mystical depth to the story and I was plunged into Magee’s world. I couldn’t put it down and was sad when it ended. I can’t wait to read the next installment in the series. A must read!

Favorite Character/Quote: Laurel. I love a strong yet feminine female protagonist and Laurel has such strength for someone so young. She’s dealt a life-changing blow and while she’s trying to figure out what it all means, she meets Caleb. Torn between duty and love, she must find her purpose in life and save her kingdom.

The Fountain of Youth by Steve Shear and @WildRosePress Moved Me! #romance #books #dementia

Fountain of Youth

Title: The Fountain of Youth

Author: Steve Shear

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Alzheimer’s, Fiction

Book Blurb:

“Two generations of dementia are enough!” Robert Glickman declares in his quest to die with dignity and the likelihood he will be next. To that end, he uses his grandson’s sixth grade quiz book, a locked away metal box, and a secret weapon that eventually comes back to haunt him.

In the meantime, he is embroiled in the lives of other residents: his neurotic sister, Essie who plots to steal his secret weapon for herself; beautiful Christina Abernathy, a retired psychotherapist he instantly falls in love with; Hester, a young server at the Fountain who suffers from progressive mutism; Boyle, a man of mystery with a questionable past for good or evil (Glickman isn’t sure which); and Boyle’s grandson, Santini, a troubled young man caught between the dope dealers he runs with and the FBI wanting to use him.

Will Glickman and Essie beat dementia? Can he win over Christina? And what about Hester, Boyle, and Boyle’s grandson?

My Review:

Robert Glickman is tired of seeing his friends and family struck down by dementia, cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He refuses to go quietly and armed with his grandson’s sixth grade quiz book, he goes on the offensive. Being a resident of the Fountain is a roller coaster ride full of adventures and mishaps. There’s Essie, Glickman’s sister, who reminds me a bit of my Great Aunt Ella. There’s the beautiful psychotherapist who’s captured Glickman’s heart yet refuses his advances. Then there’s Santini, Boyle’s grandson, who’s in deep trouble due to drugs. At the enter of it all is an intelligent retired doctor (Glickman) who’s fighting for his sanity and memories.

This was such a moving, emotional read for me. Shear portrays accurately the plight of the elderly and those suffering from dementia. I’ve seen first-hand how a person can just slip away, not remembering memories or who someone is. It’s a scary place and like Glickman, I refuse to let this hereditary disease take me down. Shear, instead of painting a depressing story of doom, he splashes humor throughout, especially in the dialogue. The message here is clear: life is what you make it and a patient dealing with the onslaught of dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s has the right to end his/her own life. I don’t personally agree with assisted death by medical doctors but I understand and respect those who wish to die with dignity.

A must-read novel that makes you think and stays with you long after you finish reading it.

Favorite Character/Quote: “There’s nothing like a good fight for what one believes in to bring people together.”

The Duchess and the Highwayman by @BeverleyOakley #historicalromance #books #romance

The Duchess and the Highwayman image

Title: The Duchess and the Highwayman

Author: Beverley Oakley

Genre: Historical Romance

Book Blurb:

A duchess disguised as a lady’s maid; a gentleman parading as a highwayman.

She’s on the run from a murderer, he’s in pursuit of one…

In a remote Norfolk manor, Phoebe, Lady Cavanaugh is wrongfully accused by her servants of her brutal husband’s murder.

There’s little sympathy in the district for the duchess who’s taken a lover and made clear she despised her husband. The local magistrate has also vowed revenge since Lady Cavanaugh rebuffed his advances.

When Phoebe is discovered in the forest wearing only a chemise stained with the blood of her murdered husband, she persuades the noble ‘highwayman’ who rescues her that she is Lady Cavanaugh’s maidservant.

Hugh Redding has his own reasons for hunting down the man who would have Phoebe tried and hanged for murder. He plans to turn ‘the maidservant with aspirations above her station’ into the ‘lady’ who might testify against the very villain who would see Phoebe dead.

But despite the fierce attraction between Phoebe and the ‘highwayman’, Phoebe is not in a position to admit she’s the ‘murderous duchess’ hunted across the land.

Seizing an opportunity to strike at the social and financial standing of the man who has profited by her distress, Phoebe is drawn into a dangerous intrigue.

But when disaster strikes, she fears Hugh will lack the sympathy or understanding of her unusual predicament to even want to save her a second time.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

It was an evening like any other: dull with a hint of menace and tension so thick Phoebe imagined slicing a neat hole in it and disappearing magically into a new life.

Any would do.

The company had retired to the dim, close drawing room, gentlemen included, following a gluttonous dinner. By the fireplace Phoebe worked at her embroidery, glad to be ignored though she knew that wouldn’t last for long.

The reprieve was even briefer than she’d anticipated. Brutus exhaled on a shuddering snore truncated by a yelp as he chased rabbits in his dreams; this caused James the footman, who was stooping over Ulrick in the act of offering his master a drink, to jump in fright and deposit a snifter of brandy upon her husband’s waistcoat. Not that it would concern Ulrick who was snoring more loudly than Brutus and whose waistcoat was already stained with drool.

The footman cast the mistress a sideways glance as he unwound his lordship’s stock and dabbed at the sticky mess but Phoebe held her tongue and made do with a dispassionate look. She’d never liked James. She was certain he’d conspired with Ulrick on more than a few occasions to put her on the back foot and to tarnish her name below stairs. Despite her obvious disdain, she was afraid of the power he wielded.

“That will be all, James.” She rose with a dismissive wave and the rustle of silken skirts.

“I’ll attend to my husband. Please see Mr Barnaby and Sir Roderick out.”

Sir Roderick, that most unwelcome of neighbours, appeared before her, bony and wraithlike; malevolent as ever. “I believe your dog that needs more attention than Lord Cavanaugh.” His thin mouth turned up in a parody of amusement as he wafted a fastidious hand about his nose, indicating Brutus’s greater guilt than his master’s snoring.

Phoebe offered Sir Roderick a cold smile. On the other side of the room Ulrick’s two other guests conversed in low voices by the window.

She inclined her head as she ignored his attempt at levity. “Good night, Sir Roderick.”

Sir Roderick straightened his spare, weedy frame, which she saw trembled with supressed outrage at being so summarily dismissed by the lady of the house.

Phoebe refused to turn away from his challenging gaze. Sir Roderick was another who couldn’t wait until the doors of Blinley Manor were closed against her the moment Ulrick breathed his last. She’d offended his honour, having bitten his lip and kneed him in the groin six months before when he’d accosted her in a dimly lit corridor and suggested in lewd terms how he might assist in the creation of an heir for the already ailing Ulrick. An heir that would ensure Phoebe kept a roof over her head.

Author Biography:

Beverley Oakley was seventeen when she bundled up her first her 500+ page romance and sent it to a publisher. Unfortunately drowning her heroine on the last page was apparently not in line with the expectations of romance readers so Beverley became a journalist.

Twenty-six years later Beverley was delighted to receive her first publishing contract from Robert Hale (UK) for a romance in which she ensured her heroine was saved from drowning in the icy North Sea.

Since 2009 Beverley has written more than thirteen historical romances, mostly set in England during the early nineteenth century. Mystery, intrigue and adventure spill from their pages and if she can pull off a thrilling race to save someone’s honour – or a worthy damsel from the noose – it’s time to celebrate with a good single malt Scotch.

Beverley lives with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony opposite a picturesque nineteenth century lunatic asylum. She also writes Africa-set adventure-filled romances tarring handsome bush pilot heroes, and historical romances with less steam and more sexual tension, as Beverley Eikli.

My Review:

Superb Book. 4.75 stars!  This book resonates with one of the most important messages that anyone can learn.  Do not judge others.  Depending on your faith or taste in music you have heard this said in many ways…. judge not lest ye… or ‘mind your own biscuits…’ (all credit to Kacey Musgrave for that brilliant line).  This message cannot be overstated.  If we do not judge and mind our own business, the world would be a great place and this book is the guide book for that.

Pillars I – Feel free to check out my 5-star review from the first time I reviewed this great story.  As a reprint, I give it 4 stars but highly recommend it to those who haven’t read it yet!

Pillars 2 – 4/5 – A well written clinical analysis of a man who is struggling with his own identity.  I think this story will resonate with people who have faced their own personal identity crises. Frankly, I did not understand the ending at all.

Pillars 3 – 5/5 – An excellent piece that speaks again to the risk of rushing to judgement – even if with good intentions.

Pillars 4 – 5/5 – Brilliant!  Do not JUDGE.  Mind your own biscuits.

Pillars 5 – 5/5 – Super story, the right message perfectly delivered.

Pillars 99 – 5/5 – Well said, people should not judge this author simple respect one of the best talents in the 21st century.

Just Friends by @AuthorStacyGold is Hot Enough to Melt Ice #romance #bookreview #FridayReads

Title: Just Friends

Author: Stacy Gold

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Novella

Book Blurb:

Taya Monroe is trying to pick up the pieces of her failed writing career and broken life after walking out on her cheating fiancé. The last thing she needs is a serious relationship. The last thing she wants is a fling. Then she runs into an old friend and ski partner—the one man she always wanted who never wanted her.

Ski Patroller Jordan Wiley is a single dad with zero time or energy for dating. When he reconnects with Taya, his attraction to her is even stronger than before she left him behind for a career in the city. But with a young son to think about, he’s determined to ignore his feelings. Again.

After a magical day on the slopes, a snow storm traps them in an avalanche of chemistry neither can deny. Will their friendship survive the weight of their passion or will they surface as more than friends?

My Review:

Taya is going through a rough patch and is staying with her sister’s family. They’re enjoying some fun on the slopes when her brother-in-law gets hurt. The last person she expected to run into is her old friend and high school crush, Jordan. Looking hot enough to melt the snow beneath his feet, Taya’s desire for him resurfaces. He invites her to come skiing tomorrow and she reluctantly accepts. It’s not like he’s interested in her, right?

Jordan can’t believe his good luck when he runs into Taya again. All his feelings rush back ten-fold but he’s a single dad now and he has responsibilities. The more time he spends with her, the stronger his passion engulfs him. When she gets stranded due to a snow storm and he offers his tiny little camper as shelter, he can’t resist her charms any longer. Will their friendship go up in flames or will they stay just friends?

I loved this ski romantic short story. It’s about second chances, unrequited love and doing what you love to do. Told in dual POV, you get both sides of the attraction, which I adored! Taya and Jordan have electrifying chemistry, so much so that my fingers were singed. I read it in one sitting and was sad when it ended. I want more!

If you’re looking for a romantic quickie, pick up this book. Highly recommend!

“Defender of the realm and his heart” Only A Hero Will Do by @alannalucas27 #bookreview #historicalromance

OnlyaHeroWillDo 1400x2100

Title: Only a Hero Will Do (The Heart of a Hero Book 2)

Author: Alanna Lucas

Genre: Historical Romance – Regency, Fantasy, Superheroes

Book Blurb:

Defender of the realm…and his wary heart…

Captain Grant Alexander is an enigma in London society. Dashing and handsome, he coldly eschews marriage. But the ton knows nothing of his role in the Legion: to bring Typhon, the traitor who seeks to destroy the British monarchy, to justice.

When Grant is thrown together with fellow Legion member Elizabeth Atwell, he’s instantly beguiled yet exasperated by this beautiful viscount’s daughter. She has little interest in combing the marriage mart for a well-bred, well-heeled husband, but is adept at code-breaking and handling a bow and arrow. She also refuses to do as she is told, insisting she accompany Grant on his mission.

As Typhon continues to evade capture and dark forces are at work, Grant realizes he must act, not only to protect the realm but Elizabeth too…not to mention his heart, which is in danger of thawing every time she comes close…

My Review:

Lady Elizabeth Atwell is well known among the Ton for her beauty and yet she hides a secret: she’s a member of the Legion, England’s spy network, and has a gift for code-breaking. She’s quick with a bow and arrow, not to mention helps bring down traitors who wish to bring down the British monarchy. She’s independent and doesn’t take no for an answer as Captain Grant soon realizes.

Captain Grant Alexander is a dashing, mysterious man who refuses to be tied down. Many women have paraded in front of him yet none have captured his attention. That is, until he meets Lady Elizabeth. A viscount’s daughter and a fellow member of the Legion, Grant knows she’s hands-off. Yet his heart refuses to listen to that and surges ahead. He tries to protect her yet she goes off on her own, thrusting head-first into danger. They bicker and spar which riles Grant’s anger as well as his passion. Can he keep his hands off of her or is she his matched partner, both in life and love?

I loved this book so much! It’s classic historical regency romance (which is one of my favorite genres) with spy/superhero undertones. Filled with plenty of action and intrigue, Only A Hero Will Do sweeps the reader away. The chemistry between Elizabeth and Grant is off the charts which propelled the plot into the stratosphere. Extremely well-written and I read it in two sittings. Lucas has an amazing gift for plunging the reader into the past through intricate details (clothes, circumstances, historical people, modes of transportation, societal manners, etc.) that is unmatched.

This is book two of a delightful series where each author reimagines their favorite superhero in Regency England. I won’t tell you who Lucas chose but the clues are woven in the story. I can’t wait to read more in this original series.

Favorite Character/Quote: Elizabeth. She’s a viscount’s daughter, not a care in the world, yet she loves working for the Legion. She has a gift for spying and decoding puzzles and messages. She’s got strength in spades and I was totally rooting for her throughout the story. Sure, she can handle herself but at the end of the day, she pines (like the rest of us) for a hero, her hero. A great role model for women.

Title: Cowgirl, Unexpectedly

Author: Vicki Tharp

Genre: Romantic Suspense/ Western Romance/ Military Romance

Book Blurb:

A Harley and a highway are all an Iraqi war veteran needs to soothe her restless spirit—until a pit stop puts her on the front lines of love . . .

Settling down is not an option for Mackenzie Parish. Since the end of her tour of duty, the ex-Marine has been on the road, doing what she can to ease the pain of her wounded shoulder and mind. But when her money runs out, she takes a job on a Wyoming ranch—and finds herself in unfamiliar territory once more . . .

Mackenzie’s lesson number one: a horse is definitely nothing like a motorcycle. But even knee deep in manure, and saddle sores aside, Mac finds comfort in the daily routine of hard work and the great outdoors. Only her bunkmate, Hank Nash, provides an unsettling distraction. The former champion bull rider has returned home to reconnect with his estranged daughter. Yet despite his own struggles, he has the patience to show Mac the ropes, and the sweet touch to draw her out of herself—and her violent past.

But when the ranch becomes the target violent threats, Mac will have to choose between the call of the road—and the man who has helped her feel whole again . . .

Available now for pre-order and set for release in October 2017!

Excerpt:

My engine sputtered and died on the downhill road into the ranch, like an old dinosaur rattling out its last breath. I coasted the rest of the way and skidded to a stop in front of a small group of men gathered around a campfire. Pebbles kicked up by my rear tire pinged into the crowd and landed with a tink against the side of the fire-blackened coffee pot. I settled my bike on its kickstand, swung my leg over and stepped to the edge of the circle of men.

Clouds building along the mountain range turned the sky the deep blue-gray of aged gunmetal. Thunder rumbled and my engine ticked as it cooled. Thin tendrils of campfire smoke curled into the air, but the handful of hot coals remaining provided little heat. A sharp whistle from an older man I assumed was the boss or ranch foreman, hushed their chatter, but all eyes remained on me. Men don’t intimidate me, but I swallowed a grumble when my eyes settled on Hank from the café.

One of the cowboys spit on the ground, another stopped whittling. A kid to Hank’s right sucked in a hard breath. I thought he might choke on his toothpick.

“Morning, boys.” I said, confident, if not entirely welcome. For a moment, silence reigned. Even the cow dog stopped chewing at his fleas. “Looks like I’m just in time.”

“I thought the women’s knitting circle met on Wednesdays,” the kid muttered around the toothpick.

There was the expected quick round of chuckles. Ignoring the comment, I walked over to the foreman and pulled the flyer from my back pocket. “Says here you need hands. I have two, so I’m here to apply.” Another round of light laughter ensued, but the scowl I sent them silenced them fast enough.

“You’re a woman,” the foreman said, as if the statement would come as a revelation to me.

I pasted on a bright smile, patted my short-cropped mop of hair the same deep, brownish red as the horse tied to a nearby tree, and flattened the front of my bomber jacket that all but hid my breasts. “Kind of you to notice.”

“We need men. Strong men. With muscle.”

I took the flier from his hand and feigned perplexion as I pretended to reread the information printed on the sheet. “No, nothing here specifies men only.”

“You have to be able to ride.”

“I can ride.” He probably meant horses, not motorcycles, but he hadn’t qualified the type of riding so I didn’t consider it an outright lie. Besides, how hard could it be anyway?

      “And shoot,” the foreman added.

A genuine smile tipped my lips. “Not a problem.”

He crossed his arms over his chest, eyes narrowed. “And wrestle calves.”

The breath I blew out ruffled my bangs. “Never wrestled calves,” I admitted. Looking around, I tilted my head, indicating the kid with the toothpick, still lanky from a growth spurt. “But I sure as hell can out wrestle him.”

The group of men burst into hoots and guffaws, and one of them piped up. “Awh, c’mon boss, give her a shot, what can it hurt?”

The foreman scrubbed a hand in nearly a week’s growth of beard and sighed. “Got no quarters for ladies, here.”

After all the things I’ve done. I don’t think I qualified as a lady any more. “That shouldn’t be a problem.” I sauntered over to Hank with mustered bravado and jabbed a thumb in his direction. “I’ll bunk with Pops.”

Hank jerked his chin up as if I’d slapped him. “Pops?”

He had at least ten years on a couple of the other guys, who weren’t long out of the schoolyard at best. It wasn’t like he was old, old. But old enough I wouldn’t have to tell him more than once I wasn’t interested in some sort of high country romance. In Iraq, the men had learned to leave me be. These guys would, too. In time. I needed some rack time before I had the energy to deal with it though. Plus, I figured I’d already pissed off Hank enough this morning that he’d be the least likely one to hit on me.

Hank eyed me with speculation, the brim of his hat shadowing his expression. “You’re no spring chicken either.”

I ignored him and the round of juvenile comments from the guys about eating chickens, plucking chickens, and a whole host of other remarks that were designed to be taken the wrong way. If my bones didn’t ache and the muscle under the scar on my shoulder didn’t burn, I might have argued with him. As it was, I already felt twice my age, so I couldn’t disagree.

An ear-piercing whistle came from behind me. The men quieted mid-laugh and the mutt saddled up to my leg and leaned against me. I dropped a hand to its head and felt the quick lick of a hot, moist tongue on my palm. I turned my head and recognized the man I’d restrained this morning and the young girl walking up from the main house.

The girl’s smile was a quirky mixture between shy and amused. The man spared me a brief nod before turning his attention to the rest of the men. “Enough of that kind of talk. I run a family operation. My wife and granddaughter live here. I expect you to behave as gentlemen, and treat them,” the man looked between his granddaughter and myself before glaring back at them, “and any other women with respect. If you cannot manage that, then you’d best go now. I won’t tolerate that nonsense here.”

He turned and headed to the barn without any fanfare. I figured that meant I, as well as the rest of the men gathered there had the job. I went to grab my motorcycle while the others grabbed their gear from their trucks. Two had their own horses in a stock trailer and they headed over to offload them. The horses’ hooves tapped a nervous, deep staccato on the trailer’s wooden floorboards as they backed out. Steel clanked on steel as the rear door banged against the shaking trailer. I straddled my bike and shifted it into neutral. The bunkhouses were downhill from the campfire, so I kept a close eye on Hank’s jeans-clad ass as I coasted down the ranch road after him.

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: Dante’s Gift by @Aubreywynne51 #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - DG

Title: Dante’s Gift

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Contemporary Romance with Historical Subplot

Book Blurb:

Kathleen James has put her practical side away for once and looks forward to the perfect romantic evening: an intimate dinner with the man of her dreams—and an engagement ring. She is not prepared to hear that he wants to bring his grandmother back from Italy to live with him.

Dominic Lawrence has planned this marriage proposal for six months. Nothing can go wrong—until his Nonna calls. Now he must interrupt the tenderest night of Katie’s life with the news that another woman will be under their roof.

When Antonia’s sister dies, she finds herself longing to be back in the states. An Italian wartime bride from the ‘40s, she knows how precious love can be. Can her own story of an American soldier and a very special collie once again bring two hearts together at Christmas?

Excerpt:

Excerpt from WWII romance –

The pilot with wheat-colored hair put his elbows on the counter and leaned toward her. “I could buy thirty loaves of bread at home for that much lettuce.”

“But you are not home, soldier. You are here, in Benevento, and a sticky bun is 100 lire.” She meant to be rude but his soft brown gaze made her heart race as if she’d just chased Dante across the field. His smile went to his eyes, adding crinkles to the corners, and made her own lips turn up. “The cost of supplies is very expensive these days, as you know.”

“So I’ve heard. Give me five,” he said with a wink. “Maybe I can sweet talk the captain into putting me back into a plane.”

“Save your money, Ken. Your ears obviously ain’t got any better in the last ten minutes,” he answered, rubber-necking over the counter. “Get a load of that landing gear.”

Dante growled again but this time showed sharp, white teeth. “I don’t think he likes you much, Bob.”

“Well I don’t care for him, neither. Give me two of those, and we’ll get out of your hair.”

The men paid for the rolls and walked outside. She headed into the kitchen when that quiet, deep voice stopped her. “I’d like to apologize for my friend. He’s not a bad Joe once you get to know him.”

“I don’t think I care to,” she said without turning around.

“It looks like I may be making regular trips through your town. Do you work here often?” His tone dripped like honey from a ladle and poured over her; she felt her body turn toward him even as her brain told her “no.”

“My family owns it. I am here every day.”

“So your father is Guido?” He had resumed his place at the counter, balanced on his elbows again, inviting her back without a word.

She found herself leaning on the counter from the other side. “How do you know my father?”

“The sign says Guido’s Café.”

She laughed. “Yes, it does. So you are no private eye, eh?”

He whistled then. “You’d make Betty Grable green with envy when you smile. It makes those blue eyes sparkle like a fresh-cut diamond. You should do that more often.”

Her eyes lowered, embarrassed at the compliment and the image of the American pinup girl in a bathing suit. “You should go catch up with your friends.”

“My name is Ken Lawrence,” he said and held out his hand.

“Antonia Capriotti,” she replied and took his hand. A tingle shot down her center and curled her toes. “It is nice to meet you.”

“You’re blushing. Mmm, beautiful and modest. That’s a rare find, you know.” He held firmly onto her hand. “And who is this?”

She looked down at the silent collie. He hadn’t made a noise when this man reached across the counter and touched her. Odd. “Dante, our protector.”

“You need one, with mugs like Bob.” He made a kissing noise in the dog’s direction and slapped the counter. Dante jumped up, feet on the edge and barked. Ken reached over and scratched the dog behind his ears. “Good boy, you look like my old Schotzie.”

“You have a dog?”

“I did. Old man hit fourteen just before I left. Mom sent me his collar when he passed.”

“I’m sorry, they are just like one of the family, si?”

“Yes they are,” he agreed, giving Dante one more pat before he tipped his hat. “I hope to see you again soon, Antonia.”

She hugged the collie as the Yank left, a swagger to his walk. “What do you know that I don’t, hmm? I trust your instincts better than mine. Perhaps we’ll consider more conversation with this Americano if he returns.”

Rule #1, Don’t Be #2 by @danmilstein is the #Motivation You Need! #books #bookreview #goals

Rule number 1 don't be number 2

Title: Rule #1, Don’t Be #2: You Get What You Work For, Not What You Wish For

Author: Daniel Milstein

Genre: Business, Self-Improvement, Entrepreneur

Book Blurb:

In his fourth book, RULE #1 DON’T BE #2, Daniel Milstein inspires like never before, challenging us to dream BIG with his charismatic candor, giving us each a compelling glimpse into our own limitless potential. In addition to Dan’s riveting accounts of overcoming adversity, Rule #1 Don’t Be #2 captivates with countless stories of those who’ve dominated their respective fields against seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Framed in Dan’s fast-paced, conversational style and his best-loved, thought-provoking quotes, we’re gifted the life-changing lessons of the world’s greatest achievers. Don’t miss Dan’s heartfelt tutorial that is destined to become a giant in the motivational genre, and beyond.

My Review:

Stop what you’re doing right now and pick up this book!

Whether you are an entrepreneur, business manager, teacher, writer, student, professional athlete, or in-between opportunities, you’re not dreaming BIG enough and need some hard-hitting motivation. Rule #1, Don’t be #2 is Dan Milstein’s fourth book and boy, is it inspiring! Dan’s writing style is similar (I imagine) to talking with him in person. He shows us, through catchy, digestible phrases and his own experiences, how to live a successful life, both professionally and personally. Not since first reading Stephen Covey more than twenty-five years ago, have I been blown away by a business motivational book.

The best part, for me, was Dan speaking freely about potential, hard work, perseverance and success. Dan’s background as an Ukrainian immigrant with seventeen cents in his pocket touched me. He worked his way through the ranks to achieving mind-blowing success. The more I read through this book, the more I felt like it was written for me. As an entrepreneur trying to grow my business, Rule #1, Don’t Be #2 opened my eyes to the possibilities. I’ve just got to dream BIG and never get complacent.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, young and old. It’ll change your perspective and inspire you to do BIG things, more than you ever thought possible. Writers/Authors: pick up this book and discover how to increase your brand and business.

Title:  MERIT BADGE MURDER

Author:  Leslie Langtry

Genre:  Cozy Comedy

Publisher: Gemma Halliday Publishing

Book Blurb:

When CIA agent Merry Wrath is “accidently” outted, she’s forced her into early retirement, changes her appearance, and moves where no one will ever find her—Iowa. Instead of black bag drops in Bangkok, she now spends her time leading a young Girl Scout troop. But Merry’s new simple life turns not-so-simple when an enemy agent shows up dead at scout camp. Suddenly Merry is forced to deal with her former life in order to preserve her future one.

It doesn’t help matters that the CIA sends in her former, sexy handler to investigate…or that the hot new neighbor across the street turns out to be the local detective in charge of her case. And when Merry is forced to take on a roommate in the voluptuous form of a turned KGB agent/bimbo, things become trickier than wet work in Waukegan or cookie sales in the spring. Nothing in the CIA or Girl Scouts’ training manuals has prepared her for what comes next…

Get this fantastic book for 99 cents!!!

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

It’s not every day you find Al Qaeda’s number four operative dead in a Girl Scout camp in Iowa.

The body was twisted unnaturally in the spider web element of the course that consisted of a large wood frame crisscrossed with elastic bungee cords.  Sadly, it was my troop’s favorite thing to do at camp. Now I had to disappoint them. I hated disappointing them.

A man hung there, in what had been his twenties, of Middle Eastern descent. The neck was clearly broken before he was placed in the ropes at Camp Singing Bird. He looked surprised to find himself here.  I’m sure the irony would be lost on him that in death, he really was surrounded by seventy-two virgins. Did it matter that they were grade schoolers, I wondered? Maybe that was just splitting hairs.

I would’ve been surprised too, had I not been through this kind of thing before. But I’d seen this stuff in Syria and Uzbekistan – not in the placid, wooded hills of eastern Iowa.

And my second grade troop was due at any minute. I was pretty sure I couldn’t pass this off as something adorable – like I had with the bats in Tinder Trails Cabin or the mice in the latrines. Troop Leader’s Helpful Hint #1 – if your Girl Scouts freak out upon meeting a bat/mouse/wolf spider for the first time – tell them it’s just a baby bat/mouse/wolf spider. Little girls are suckers for that and soon what was scary is ‘adorbs!’ – whatever that means.

I bent to take his pulse, just to make sure. Yup. He was dead. His glassy eyes were opened wide and his mouth hung open.  Dammit. I need this like I needed wet work in the slums of Rio.

The sounds of giggles and singing came from the trees just around the corner. Any minute the fourteen, seven and eight year old girls who called me their leader would appear. I was pretty sure I couldn’t convince them that this dead terrorist was a cute, dead baby terrorist. I pulled the parachute I was going to use for games later out of my backpack and threw it over the spider web.

“Mrs. Wrath!” The girls squealed in unison before tackling me in a sticky, group hug. Kelly, my co-leader, smirked at me. She could get away with smirking at me because she’s known me since we were six-year old scouts.

“Girls,” I gently pushed them away. “How many times do I need to tell you – it’s Ms. Wrath.  I’m not married.” Of course, I knew the answer to this question. Ad infinitum. Meaning, they’d always call me Mrs.  Any woman over the age of twenty-one in Iowa was ‘Mrs.’ Clearly it was me who didn’t get it.

“Mrs. Wrath?” The third Katelynn asked. Or was it the Kaitlin the Fourth? They all looked the same to me. And each one of them spelled their name a completely different way. Spy work had not prepared me for that.

“It’s Ms. Wrath, Katelynn.” I said with a smile. Leader Helpful Hint #2 – when talking to  little girls, always smile. They cry if you don’t. I’m not kidding. You don’t know real terror until you’ve stared at the watery eyes and rubbery bottom lip of a cute kid.

The second grader looked confused for a moment, which was to be expected. “Okay. Mrs. Wrath?” She asked again.

I sighed. “Yes, Katelynn?”

“Why is the parachute over the spider web? And why is it all lumpy?”

Kelly squinted at the parachute, eyebrows knit together. She’d probably figure it out, being a nurse and all.

“The spider web is out of commission, girls.” I announced, stepping between them and the dead man.

A chorus of complaints came from the little girls and I held up my right hand in the universal Girl Scout symbol for silence. They quieted down immediately. I once again, really wished I’d known about this trick when I was surrounded by Farc rebels in Colombia.

“Head on over to the Peanut Butter Pass – I think you’re old enough for that one now.” I said in a nice save worthy of someone of my caliber.

“YAY!” The girls exploded in shrieks and raced off to that element, leaving me in the dust.

Kelly narrowed her eyes. “They aren’t old enough for the Peanut Butter Pass.”

“You’d better get after them before they start scaling the rope, then. I’ll be there in a minute.” I shoved her in the direction of the squealing herd before she could respond. “We can’t leave them alone for a minute, you know.”

Kelly gave me a weird look, but took off after the troop. I turned back to the dead man in the parachute. It kind of looked like he was cocooned in the web – as if a giant spider had caught him, poisoned and wrapped him to save for later. If only that was what had really happened.

With a heavy sigh, I took out my cell phone to call the ranger. This was going to suck. You think the CIA is bad with paperwork? Langley has NOTHING on the Girl Scouts of America when it comes to filling out forms and accident reports in triplicate. Nothing.

Rolf’s Quest (A Medieval Encounter Book 1) by @Aubreywynne51 #bookreview #historicalromance

rolf-s-quest

Title: Rolf’s Quest (A Medieval Encounter Book 1)

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Historical Romance, Romantic Fantasy

Book Blurb:

A wizard, a curse, a fated love…

When Rolf finally discovers the woman who can end the curse that has plagued his family for centuries, she is already betrothed. Time is running out for the royal wizard of King Henry II. If he cannot find true love without the use of sorcery, the magic will die for future generations.

Melissa is intrigued by the mystical, handsome man that haunts her by night and tempts her by day. His bizarre tale of Merlin, enchantments, and finding genuine love has her questioning his sanity and her heart.

From the moment Melissa stepped from his dreams and into his arms, Rolf knew she was his destiny. Now, he will battle against time, a powerful duke, and call on the gods to save her.

My Review:

True love, without the use of magic, will free the great Merlin from his own mystical prison but can it be done?

Back in the day, the great wizard Merlin fell in love with a woman who loved another. Merlin cast a love spell on her and in retaliation, she cursed him and all his future generations. The first-born son of each generation will have the opportunity to choose fated love without the use of magic.

Rolf was brought to Merlin when he was only ten years old and the fate of Merlin and future generations is in Rolf’s hands. Rolf thinks he’s learned from his ancestors’ mistakes but destiny is a funny mistress because when he meets his beloved, the woman who can break his family’s curse, she’s already engaged to another.

Melissa has been engaged to Charles Roker, a duke, from the time she was small. A partnership between two families to strengthen alliances, not for love. Melissa starts having intoxicating dreams about a mysterious man with dark hair and when he appears at King Henry II’s coronation, she’s left to wonder if his story of fated love and Merlin is true. Desire wars with allegiance to her father but she has one ally: the Queen. She must choose between love and loyalty. Can she marry a man she barely knows yet his kisses make her dizzy as if she’s drunk too much spiced wine? And what about this curse? Will true love conquer all or will magic cease to be?

I was captivated by the historical romance from the first page and honestly, didn’t want it to end. Wynne is historically accurate throughout the book, from the clothing to historical people/events to how society behaves and even cultural traditions (such as weddings and coronations). I was immersed in the 12th century and it was glorious.

I loved Roker, Melissa’s fiancé, and it was quite enjoyable seeing his evil mind process events out of his control. He fought for Melissa’s hand and when fate intervenes, his world is turned upside down. His actions, as well as his frame of mind, amped up the suspense and intrigue.

At the end, Rolf’s Quest is a testament to love and lovers. It reminded me of The Princess Bride as well as Ladyhawk. I highly recommend it and I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series!

It’s #NationalKissingDay and We’re Celebrating Swoon-Worthy Kisses in #Books! #FridayReads

kiss 1

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. Today is National Kissing Day and in honor of that, I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite books that have toe-curling, romantic kisses in them. Some of them are sweet, some steamy but all from books I have read. So without further ado, here they are:

A Knight in Shining Armor (The Montgomery/Taggert Family Book 15) by Jude Deveraux

Jude Deveraux’s beloved bestseller has captivated readers the world over; now in a special edition featuring new material, this timeless love story greets a new generation.

Once upon a time…as a fair maiden lay weeping upon a cold tombstone, her heartfelt desire was suddenly made real before her: tall, broad of shoulder, attired in gleaming silver and gold, her knight in shining armor had come to rescue his damsel in distress….

Abandoned by her lover, thoroughly modern Dougless Montgomery finds herself alone and brokenhearted in an old English church. She never dreamed that a love more powerful than time awaited her there…until Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck, a sixteenth-century knight, appeared. Drawn to him by a bond so sudden and compelling that it defied reason, Dougless knew that Nicholas was nothing less than a miracle: a man who would not seek to change her, who found her perfect just as she was. But she could not know how strong were the chains that tied them to the past—or the grand adventure that lay before them.

When a series of sabotages wreak havoc on the theatre and danger threatens Katy’s life, can Ty save her and win back her love, or is it too late for these star-crossed lovers?

Foolish Bride (Forever Brides) by A.S. Fenichel

Sadly ever after . . . unless some dreams really do come true?

Elinor Burkenstock never believed in fairy tales. Sure, she’s always been a fool for love—what woman isn’t? But Elinor knows the difference between fiction and truth. Daydreams and reality. True love and false promises. . . . Until the unthinkable happens, and Elinor’s engagement is suddenly terminated and no one, least of all her fiancé, will tell her why.

Sir Michael Rollins’s war-hero days seem far behind him when, after one last hurrah before his wedding, he gets shot and his injuries leave him in dire shape. He wants nothing more than to marry Elinor, the woman of his wildest dreams. But Elinor’s father forbids it . . . and soon Michael is faced with a desperate choice: Spare Elinor a life with a broken man or risk everything to win her heart—until death do they part?

Soldier On by Sydney Logan

Will his call of duty break both their hearts?

Losing her father in Desert Storm has left Stephanie James with a bitter soul when it comes to the military. As a college senior juggling a full course load, Steph’s only goal is to graduate with honors at the end of the semester. She’s focused, determined, and a firm believer in all work and no play. Then she meets Brandon Walker at a New Year’s Eve costume party. Despite his disguise, Steph finds herself attracted to the camouflaged soldier who curls her toes with a scorching midnight kiss.

Brandon is an engineering major and ROTC student from the hills of Kentucky. Growing up as the son of a major general has given Brandon firsthand knowledge of the struggles military families sometimes face. Now that his father’s memory is fading, Brandon is even more determined to make his dad proud and graduate as an officer in the United States Army. Then he meets Stephanie, and suddenly, his focus is less on his military service and more on the pretty brunette who has stolen his heart. When he becomes aware of Steph’s resentment toward the military, he worries their relationship is doomed.

When faced with the realization that she’s fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present . . . and in her future?

She might be good for nothing but spending money and wearing clothes, but Noelle will escape the sexy sheikh’s palace, no matter what. She has to—no way will her father pay his debt. The only help she’s going to get is from her childhood imaginary friend, a pirate princess who is ready to make the stupid, sexy sheikh walk the plank.

A Most Unusual Princess by Award-Winning @KWilkinsauthor #romance #historicalromance

Amazon AMUP cover

Title: A Most Unusual Princess

Author’s Note: This is Book 1 of the Royal Desires Series. Although the books are connected, each story stands alone as an individual read.

Author: Kelli A. Wilkins

Genre: Historical/Fantasy Romance

Blurb:

A Most Unusual Princess

Princess Elara needs to find a royal husband, but claims that no man can satisfy her. Her father hires Dalton, a special guard, to watch over her while she’s courting suitors. Dalton finds her unusual behaviors charming—and enthralling.

Dalton’s aloof manner intrigues Elara, and despite their differences, they share tender moments and intimate nighttime encounters. Elara is heartbroken when her father chooses a “proper” husband for her—until she meets the mystery man.

Bonus! This e-book includes a sneak peek at the second book in the Royal Desires Series: A MOST INTRIGUING TEMPTATION.

Excerpt:

Dalton walked past her and entered her bedchamber. She stood in the doorway while he searched the wardrobes and looked under the bed. After last night’s fright, she was taking no chances.

“There’s nothing… a-ha! What’s this?” He pulled a white silk stocking out from under the bed and waved it in the air.

“Put that down.” She raced into the room and lunged for the stocking. Dalton held it over his head.

“Is this what a princess wears beneath her dress?”

“Give that to me.” She knocked him backward onto the bed and pounced on him.

“This would make a nice remembrance,” he said, keeping the stocking out of her reach.

“Beast!” She squirmed as they playfully struggled for the stocking. A moment later, Dalton turned his head and his lips brushed against hers.

She gasped. Dalton had stopped laughing and was staring up at her. She closed her eyes and felt his finger caress her cheek.

“You’re beautiful,” he whispered.

The next thing she knew, Dalton’s mouth covered hers. The feel of his warm, moist lips sent a searing heat through her. After a few seconds of heaven, he pulled away.

“I should not have done that.”

She licked her lips. “I’m glad you did. It was nice.” Her heart hammered out of control, and her lower body throbbed. This was the feeling she was supposed to have when she met with her suitors. “Kiss me again.”

“With pleasure.”

Dalton curled his arms around her and pulled her down onto him. His mouth moved against hers, and fire flashed between her legs. She kissed him, tentatively at first, then with more passion as she was swept away by desire.

He slid his hands across her back and down to her buttocks. She moaned as he squeezed her through her dress. Was this what it felt like to have a man make love to her? Every night should be like this.

She ignored a faint rapping on the sitting room door. It was probably a lady-in-waiting coming to undress her for bed. She needed no help with her clothes tonight. Dalton was here, he could remove her dress and then…

“Elara?”

Dalton broke the kiss and bolted upright. “It’s your father!”

Title: Towers of Earth

Author: J. C. Conway

Genre: Science Fiction, Technothriller, Cyberpunk

Book Blurb:

At the brink of an impending dark age, 15-year-old Allison Taylor escapes Earth on a colony ship to the stars. But a catastrophic quark drive failure forces a desperate, near-light-speed return a millennium into Earth’s future. Allison is surprised to find humanity in a “New Renaissance” and to see the Great Geostationary Towers her father engineered still stretching majestically from ground to high orbit, now housing Earth’s billions.

When Allison learns the “New Renaissance” is a mere façade, she struggles against crushing odds to reunite with her fellow colonists. Finally gaining the opportunity to flee again, she realizes her special knowledge of the Towers may empower her to break the Tower Administrators’ tyranny—but at the cost of her means of escape. Allison is torn. Will fulfilling her father’s dream be worth abandoning her chance to finally reach the stars?

My Review:

Earth is on the brink of a dark age so teenager Allison and others flee on a spaceship. She leaves everything behind and starts a new life amongst the colonists. Life is going pretty great for Allison, that is until the spaceship’s drive fails and they return to Earth 1,000 years in the future. Much has changed on Earth and Allison isn’t sure if it’s for the better. It feels more like a prison but her knowledge of her father’s geostationary towers gives her power she’s never dealt with before. Can she use this new-found power to help her fellow colonists escape oppression or should she escape to pursue her own dreams to traveling throughout space?

Towers of Earth is an absorbing science fiction thriller that I loved. First of all, I connected with Allison right away. She’s a strong, adventurous female lead in what is mainly a male-dominated genre. She’s fully fleshed out and at times felt so real to me, I swear I experienced everything she did. Conway is a master storyteller when it comes to describing not only the action but the science technology. The suspense kept me turning the pages and I even gasped a few times. There are a few spots in the plot that could’ve been trimmed, due to length, but overall, a compelling read. Yes, it’s technically young adult with undertones of dystopia but honestly, I didn’t notice. I was that caught up in the story.

Fans of Tom Clancy, B. V. Larson, L. Ron Hubbard and Star Trek will love this book.

Favorite Character/Quote: Allison. I connected with her instantly and while she’s female, that didn’t detract from the story. It was refreshing to have such a strong female main character in Hard Science Fiction.

My Rating: 4.5 stars
