Title: Rolf’s Quest (A Medieval Encounter Book 1)

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Historical Romance, Romantic Fantasy

Book Blurb:

A wizard, a curse, a fated love…

When Rolf finally discovers the woman who can end the curse that has plagued his family for centuries, she is already betrothed. Time is running out for the royal wizard of King Henry II. If he cannot find true love without the use of sorcery, the magic will die for future generations.

Melissa is intrigued by the mystical, handsome man that haunts her by night and tempts her by day. His bizarre tale of Merlin, enchantments, and finding genuine love has her questioning his sanity and her heart.

From the moment Melissa stepped from his dreams and into his arms, Rolf knew she was his destiny. Now, he will battle against time, a powerful duke, and call on the gods to save her.

My Review:

True love, without the use of magic, will free the great Merlin from his own mystical prison but can it be done?

Back in the day, the great wizard Merlin fell in love with a woman who loved another. Merlin cast a love spell on her and in retaliation, she cursed him and all his future generations. The first-born son of each generation will have the opportunity to choose fated love without the use of magic.

Rolf was brought to Merlin when he was only ten years old and the fate of Merlin and future generations is in Rolf’s hands. Rolf thinks he’s learned from his ancestors’ mistakes but destiny is a funny mistress because when he meets his beloved, the woman who can break his family’s curse, she’s already engaged to another.

Melissa has been engaged to Charles Roker, a duke, from the time she was small. A partnership between two families to strengthen alliances, not for love. Melissa starts having intoxicating dreams about a mysterious man with dark hair and when he appears at King Henry II’s coronation, she’s left to wonder if his story of fated love and Merlin is true. Desire wars with allegiance to her father but she has one ally: the Queen. She must choose between love and loyalty. Can she marry a man she barely knows yet his kisses make her dizzy as if she’s drunk too much spiced wine? And what about this curse? Will true love conquer all or will magic cease to be?

I was captivated by the historical romance from the first page and honestly, didn’t want it to end. Wynne is historically accurate throughout the book, from the clothing to historical people/events to how society behaves and even cultural traditions (such as weddings and coronations). I was immersed in the 12th century and it was glorious.

I loved Roker, Melissa’s fiancé, and it was quite enjoyable seeing his evil mind process events out of his control. He fought for Melissa’s hand and when fate intervenes, his world is turned upside down. His actions, as well as his frame of mind, amped up the suspense and intrigue.

At the end, Rolf’s Quest is a testament to love and lovers. It reminded me of The Princess Bride as well as Ladyhawk. I highly recommend it and I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series!

kiss 1

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. Today is National Kissing Day and in honor of that, I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite books that have toe-curling, romantic kisses in them. A Knight in Shining Armor (The Montgomery/Taggert Family Book 15) by Jude Deveraux

Jude Deveraux’s beloved bestseller has captivated readers the world over; now in a special edition featuring new material, this timeless love story greets a new generation.

Abandoned by her lover, thoroughly modern Dougless Montgomery finds herself alone and brokenhearted in an old English church. She never dreamed that a love more powerful than time awaited her there…until Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck, a sixteenth-century knight, appeared. Drawn to him by a bond so sudden and compelling that it defied reason, Dougless knew that Nicholas was nothing less than a miracle: a man who would not seek to change her, who found her perfect just as she was. But she could not know how strong were the chains that tied them to the past—or the grand adventure that lay before them.

A Most Unusual Princess by Award-Winning @KWilkinsauthor #romance #historicalromance

Amazon AMUP cover

Title: A Most Unusual Princess

Author’s Note: This is Book 1 of the Royal Desires Series. Although the books are connected, each story stands alone as an individual read.

Author: Kelli A. Wilkins

Genre: Historical/Fantasy Romance

Blurb:

A Most Unusual Princess

Princess Elara needs to find a royal husband, but claims that no man can satisfy her. Her father hires Dalton, a special guard, to watch over her while she’s courting suitors. Dalton finds her unusual behaviors charming—and enthralling.

Dalton’s aloof manner intrigues Elara, and despite their differences, they share tender moments and intimate nighttime encounters. Elara is heartbroken when her father chooses a “proper” husband for her—until she meets the mystery man.

Bonus! This e-book includes a sneak peek at the second book in the Royal Desires Series: A MOST INTRIGUING TEMPTATION.

Excerpt:

Dalton walked past her and entered her bedchamber. She stood in the doorway while he searched the wardrobes and looked under the bed. After last night’s fright, she was taking no chances.

“There’s nothing… a-ha! What’s this?” He pulled a white silk stocking out from under the bed and waved it in the air.

“Put that down.” She raced into the room and lunged for the stocking. Dalton held it over his head.

“Is this what a princess wears beneath her dress?”

“Give that to me.” She knocked him backward onto the bed and pounced on him.

“This would make a nice remembrance,” he said, keeping the stocking out of her reach.

“Beast!” She squirmed as they playfully struggled for the stocking. A moment later, Dalton turned his head and his lips brushed against hers.

She gasped. Dalton had stopped laughing and was staring up at her. She closed her eyes and felt his finger caress her cheek.

“You’re beautiful,” he whispered.

The next thing she knew, Dalton’s mouth covered hers. The feel of his warm, moist lips sent a searing heat through her. After a few seconds of heaven, he pulled away.

“I should not have done that.”

She licked her lips. “I’m glad you did. It was nice.” Her heart hammered out of control, and her lower body throbbed. This was the feeling she was supposed to have when she met with her suitors. “Kiss me again.”

“With pleasure.”

Dalton curled his arms around her and pulled her down onto him. His mouth moved against hers, and fire flashed between her legs. She kissed him, tentatively at first, then with more passion as she was swept away by desire.

He slid his hands across her back and down to her buttocks. She moaned as he squeezed her through her dress. Was this what it felt like to have a man make love to her? Every night should be like this.

She ignored a faint rapping on the sitting room door. It was probably a lady-in-waiting coming to undress her for bed. She needed no help with her clothes tonight. Dalton was here, he could remove her dress and then…

“Elara?”

Dalton broke the kiss and bolted upright. “It’s your father!”

Towers of Earth by @jcconwaywriter is a Brilliant #Technothriller! #scifi #bookreview #SFF

Towers-Of-Earth

Title: Towers of Earth

Author: J. C. Conway

Genre: Science Fiction, Technothriller, Cyberpunk

Book Blurb:

At the brink of an impending dark age, 15-year-old Allison Taylor escapes Earth on a colony ship to the stars. But a catastrophic quark drive failure forces a desperate, near-light-speed return a millennium into Earth’s future. Allison is surprised to find humanity in a “New Renaissance” and to see the Great Geostationary Towers her father engineered still stretching majestically from ground to high orbit, now housing Earth’s billions.

When Allison learns the “New Renaissance” is a mere façade, she struggles against crushing odds to reunite with her fellow colonists. Finally gaining the opportunity to flee again, she realizes her special knowledge of the Towers may empower her to break the Tower Administrators’ tyranny—but at the cost of her means of escape. Allison is torn. Will fulfilling her father’s dream be worth abandoning her chance to finally reach the stars?

My Review:

Earth is on the brink of a dark age so teenager Allison and others flee on a spaceship. She leaves everything behind and starts a new life amongst the colonists. Life is going pretty great for Allison, that is until the spaceship’s drive fails and they return to Earth 1,000 years in the future. Much has changed on Earth and Allison isn’t sure if it’s for the better. It feels more like a prison but her knowledge of her father’s geostationary towers gives her power she’s never dealt with before. Can she use this new-found power to help her fellow colonists escape oppression or should she escape to pursue her own dreams to traveling throughout space?

Towers of Earth is an absorbing science fiction thriller that I loved. First of all, I connected with Allison right away. She’s a strong, adventurous female lead in what is mainly a male-dominated genre. She’s fully fleshed out and at times felt so real to me, I swear I experienced everything she did. Conway is a master storyteller when it comes to describing not only the action but the science technology. The suspense kept me turning the pages and I even gasped a few times. There are a few spots in the plot that could’ve been trimmed, due to length, but overall, a compelling read. Yes, it’s technically young adult with undertones of dystopia but honestly, I didn’t notice. I was that caught up in the story.

Fans of Tom Clancy, B. V. Larson, L. Ron Hubbard and Star Trek will love this book.

Favorite Character/Quote: Allison. I connected with her instantly and while she’s female, that didn’t detract from the story. It was refreshing to have such a strong female main character in Hard Science Fiction.

Life and Death in Old Peking

Life & Death in Old Peking; the Murder of Pamela Werner

A Guest Post by G. D. Sheppard

As a police officer, it can be difficult to switch off from work. You can’t stop seeing the world through police eyes. And that was very much the case when I was leant a book to read a few years ago. The subject was the brutal unsolved murder of Pamela Werner, a young British woman in Peking in the winter of 1937.

Pamela had been cycling home in the dark from a skating rink. She never made it home. Her body was found the next morning in a shallow ditch under the shadow of the city-wall. She had been mutilated beyond recognition and, most mysteriously, her heart stolen.

The crime terrified the large community of Western foreigners living in Peking. But the case frustrated the police and remained unsolved. The recent account I read now pointed to the guilt of several local residents – as revealed by the preserved investigative letters of the victim’s elderly father.

But I wasn’t convinced. Not at all. From a policing perspective, the evidence didn’t add up. Something, I realised, was very wrong.

So I visited the UK National Archives in Kew and examined the father’s letters myself – some 150 typed pages addressed to the Foreign Office in the late 1930s. And I found that my instinct had been correct. But in addition to that I saw immediately that there was far more to the case than had been revealed.

I delved further, spending two years studying the evidence provided by documents and archives from across the world – from the USA to Australia, from China to Italy: letters about the murder between diplomats; articles in the local press; military propaganda; secret reports of espionage and political assassination. There was so much more to the crime than had ever been made public. I also found the list of suspects growing: doctors, journalists, diplomats, soldiers. And there throughout, bringing his influence to the case, was the enigmatic and controversial figure of Sir Edmund Backhouse – one of the greatest fraudsters of the 20th century.

Having gathered a wealth of evidence I then felt compelled to write of the affair, explaining not only the facts behind the crime itself, but also the extraordinary lives of those involved, and of a way of life in a China that was soon to disappear with the advent of war and the triumph of Mao’s communism.

Leaving the Metropolitan police after thirty years I was finally free of restraints to twin that professional experience with a fervent interest in modern history: Life and Death in Old Peking; the Murder of Pamela Werner is the result. Eighty years after the murder, the book explores every evidential avenue, examines all the suspects, and brings the reader to the door of the guilty. Peking in 1937 was a fascinating time and place, one worth the study, and it provides a tale very much worth the telling.

Title:  Life & Death in Old Peking; the Murder of Pamela Werner

Author:  G D Sheppard

Genre:  History, True-Crime, Espionage, World War 2

Book Blurb:

The brutal murder of Pamela Werner in 1937 in pre-communist Peking horrified the foreigners living within the ancient walled capital. The appalling injuries the young British woman suffered were as barbaric as they were mysterious. Months later, China was engulfed by war with Japan, and the macabre crime remained unsolved with the murderer still at large.

Life & Death in Old Peking investigates this cold case, using primary source material hitherto unexamined.

Latterly, there has been a rekindling of interest in the death of this unfortunate woman with the account of her murder being derived solely from archived letters of her idiosyncratic father, E.T.C. Werner, a renowned sinologist and long-time member of the China consular service.

In contrast, Life & Death in Old Peking dissects the crime, utilising a broader range of historical sources. The context of her death and its investigation are examined. Men, whose lives intersected with that of Pamela’s, and who thus have been previously named as suspects, accessories, or indeed, murderers, are scrutinized, with their characters and motivations put under the spotlight. Allegations of a political motive to her death are revisited using the newly discovered secret correspondence between the enigmatic Sir Edmund Backhouse and the British Embassy.

In this manner Life & Death in Old Peking touches on many extraordinary lives led by foreigners in a China long since vanished.

Who killed Pamela Werner? Why was the answer to this mystery out of reach for so long?  Is it possible that the solution has been overlooked?

Yes. Until now.

Excerpt:

Chapter one – The Discovery; body found beside the city wall

The Times newspaper of Saturday 9 January 1937 carried a sensational headline:

British girl’s death in Peking; Murder Suspected

The British authorities and the Chinese police are investigating the mysterious death last night of Pamela Werner, a 17-year-old British girl, the daughter of Mr. Chalmers Werner, the author and former British Consul at Foochow. She disappeared yesterday evening after skating at the French club rink.

The body was found this morning inside the city wall and 250 yards from the girl’s home, at one of the loneliest spots in the city. It had been so badly mauled by stray dogs as to be unrecognizable and to make it difficult, except after a careful medical examination, to hazard a guess how she met her death, but in view of the lack of evidence that an accident had happened murder must be suspected.

The Times had been quick off the mark. It was impressive. The famous Fleet Street newspaper had a local correspondent and teleprinters, but Peking was a long way from London and the victim’s body had only been discovered some 18 hours or so before going to press. The article did contain a few errors – Pamela Werner was nearly twenty, not seventeen, and her father’s name was Edward rather than Chalmers Werner, but it was a timely piece of journalism arriving on the breakfast tables of its British readership, distracting them from the miserably wet winter they were enduring that year.

Despite the intense media interest, the story may have escaped the notice of the British Foreign Office in Whitehall as the following months proved to be a turbulent time for international relations. After years of military skirmishing and political feuding, 1937 saw the commencement of the long anticipated war between China and Japan, a conflict that eventually resulted in the death of over twenty million people. Closer to home, at least from a British point of view, was the Spanish Civil War, already in its second year: another conflict costing close to half a million lives.  And as if to signal future intent, the expanding armed forces of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy both sent military aid to the Spanish Nationalists. For much of the world, war, or the threat of war, loomed large.

By the following summer the murder, still very much the talk of Peking, appears to have slipped beneath the Foreign Office radar entirely.

Question time in the House of Commons, Westminster, 16 June 1937 found Anthony Eden, later prime minister, but at that time Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Neville Chamberlain’s government, fielding questions from members of parliament. Most posed that Wednesday afternoon concerned the pressing and thorny subject of the civil war in Spain but one question was related to more distant international troubles. Harry Day, the Labour MP for Southwark Central, rose from the green bench to ask Eden about the instability in China, and: to what extent the lives and property of British subjects had been adversely affected during the previous twelve months? And what steps had been made to safeguard them?

Ministers were given notice of tabled questions, giving their support staff time to gather facts and prepare meaningful answers. Rising to reply, Eden stated, reassuringly, that no British subjects had been kidnapped or murdered, and that all possible efforts were being made to safeguard their lives and property. And with that, Eden and the House moved swiftly on to the subject of the war in Spain.

Many MPs were well known for asking ministerial questions as doing so kept their names in the newspapers. Harry Day was one of them. When his turn to present a question was called by the Speaker it was often met with an amused chant from the House of Another Day, Another Day. 3 Coming as it did a few weeks before the event that triggered full Sino-Japanese conflict, Day’s China question appears to have received only limited press attention.

But a month or so later Eden had to apologise. He had got his facts wrong. Unwittingly, he had misled the House. For Harry Day had since received a strongly worded letter from a stranger living in Peking, the retired British consul, E.T.C. Werner, whose daughter had been murdered in that city on 7th January. The father, it transpired, had read of Day’s question and Eden’s reply stating there having been no murders in a British newspaper in China and was outraged.

In Peking, however, Pamela’s murder was front page news.

The Peking Chronicle – Saturday 9 January 1937:

Dead Body of Young Foreign Woman Found in Gully along City Wall

Victim believed to be Pamela Werner, daughter of Mr. E.T.C. Werner; Post-mortem Examination Made; Inquest This Morning.

So ran the headline story of Peking’s English language newspaper the morning after crime’s discovery. Accompanying the report was a grainy photograph showing where the body was found in a ditch at a remote and desolate spot directly under one of Peking’s immense city walls. The foreign community was appalled by the news that one of their own had been murdered. Separate and detached from much of Chinese society, as most of them were, foreigners were rarely touched by serious crime. Few could have imagined how many of their number; diplomats; doctors; journalists; soldiers, would sooner or later be implicated as murderers or conspirators in the crime. As details of rape and mutilation were leaked to the press, shock changed to horror. There was a clamour for more information. The local papers obliged.

Excerpt:

“The sunlight was intense after a half hour in that gloomy space, but I squinted hard and kept moving toward a narrow set of steps down to the parking lot. Grady walked a few paces behind me, and if he heard the crinkle of paper as I moved, he elected not to say anything.

Grady hit the remote to his truck and grabbed for the passenger side door, his hand light on my elbow as he helped me up. Paper crackled as my butt hit the seat and Grady’s eyes narrowed. Without a word, he slammed my door and went around to the driver’s side, climbing up into the cab and stabbing the keys into the ignition.

“So, I—” I hesitated as I shifted in my seat and my movement was accompanied by the distinct sound of cardboard bending.

“No,” Grady muttered, and clicked on the radio. “No talking.”

“But—”

“Shh.” Grady put a finger to his lips, his eyes still on the road. “Any minute you’re going to tell me about the felony crime you just committed. And then I’m going to have to deal with the fact that I was an accessory to a felony crime.”

“Umm, yeah.” I reached around to the back of my pants and eased the file folder up from my waistband, working it out slowly so as to not lose anything as Grady headed up the hillside toward his house. As I brought it around to look at it, the red block letters damning me to years of incarceration should I get caught, a muscle ticked in Grady’s jaw.

“You stole classified documents.” He shook his head from side to side.

I looked up at Grady and then down at the mangled file with the red Top Secret heading. I took a corner of the front sheet and ripped across the width of the page, separating the words “Top Secret” from the rest of the paper.

“They’re declassified now.” I crumpled up the classification and shoved it in my pocket.

Grady sighed.

I shrugged and opened the file.

Book Blurb:

How will this tiny little child hold up in surgery?

You won’t believe the real-life medical drama in this intense, close-up visit to the cardiac OR.

Pick up your copy with just one click.

My Review:

In today’s world of medicine, there are some doctors so gifted, so talented, saving the lives of people comes second-nature. Dr. G is such a person and this is her story. Told from the point of view of journalist Mark Oristano as he shadows Dr. Kristine Guleserian, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, Surgeon’s Story is a gut-wrenching, emotional and in-depth look at an average day in Dr. G’s OR. From the x-ray room to meeting the parents of one of her infant patients, Oristano reveals it all. The reader gets to secretly scrub in and peek inside the mind of a brilliant surgeon.

I loved this memoir and seeing Dr. G in action. It reads quickly and you get a real feel for what an average day in the OR is like. But more than that, you meet her support staff as well as the parents whose child’s life is in Dr. G’s hands. Oristano details without gory details life each procedure, spotlighting Dr. G’s brilliance. There are even a few funny moments that made me chuckle. What’s front and center, though, is the inspiring woman who is Dr. G. She’s proof-positive that women can change the world.

If you’re a fan of medical television dramas or looking for an emotional memoir, pick up Surgeon’s Story today. Peek inside an OR and witness medical miracles happening every single day. A must read!

Author Biography:

Dr. Guleserian’s life, training and work are discussed in detail, framed around the incredibly dramatic story of a heart transplant for a two-year old girl whose own heart was rapidly dying.  Author Mark Oristano takes readers inside the operating room to get a first-hand look at pediatric heart surgeries most doctors in America would never attempt.

That’s because Dr. Guleserian is recognized as one of the top pediatric heart surgeons in America, one of a very few who have performed a transplant on a one-week old baby. Dr. Guleserian (Goo-liss-AIR-ee-yan) provided her expertise, and opened her life and her OR to Oristano to produce Surgeon’s Story.

As preparation to write this stirring book, Oristano spent hours inside the operating room at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas watching Dr. Guleserian perform surgeries that each day were life or death experiences. Readers will be with Dr. Guleserian on her rounds, meeting with parents, and in the Operating Room for heart transplants and more.

Oristano is successful sportscaster, photographer, and actor. A graduate of Texas Christian University with a communications degree, Mark worked with famed football broadcaster Verne Lundquist in Dallas, spent a year as a news co-anchor with Oprah Winfrey in Nashville, and then on the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network, Houston Oilers Radio Network, for NFL Films, and then in the Cowboys’ public relations department. Oristano is a frequent public speaker giving talks on the game of football and his stories generated from his career. His first book, A Sportscaster’s Guide to Watching Football, grew out of his work broadcasting NFL games for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers. He has been a volunteer at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas since 1997.

Idiots Tale

Title: Idiot’s Tale: It’s always darkest just before the end

Author: Anthony Land

Genre: Suspense, Thriller, Fiction Noir, Private Detective Noir

Book Blurb:

Your name is John Rainwater. You’re an aging and penniless private investigator. You may have killed someone. You and your client are up to your necks in something terrifying. The female spy who is supposed to be keeping you alive may be insane. And tomorrow things could get really bad.

It began when the rich and beautiful Morgana Trehane burst into your low-rent office near the New Orleans docks, claiming that she has just escaped from kidnappers who grilled her about something called White Stone, which may be the realization of the ancient dream of turning base metal into gold.

Within 24 hours you and your client are in Miami, with ex-Mossad agent Roni Miller – the most violent woman you ever met – guiding you through a tangle of lies, greed, and deadly peril. What you are pursuing isn’t just the promise of endless wealth, but a device that could set off the most terrible war in human history.

You are vastly out of your depth, the body count is rising, and all you know for certain is that if this operation you’ve stumbled into fails, you, the lovely Morgana, and everyone else involved will end up in unmarked graves so that people in power can deny that it ever existed.

Idiot’s Tale is unlike any thriller you’ve read, careening between mordant humor and nihilistic darkness, on its way to an ending that will haunt you for a long time.

If you’re a fan of fast-paced, smart thrillers with a very dark edge, you should read Idiot’s Tale. Go ahead. We dare you!

My Review:

This was a great read.

The tale of Dr. Rainwater and Morgana was a page turner that I couldn’t wait to continue.  I love the intellectual aspect to the gritty PI and many of the lines will resonate with me, going forward.  The least of which was ‘Figjam’. Do not Google a definition in front of children or people with mild constitutions.

Warning: I must warn the reader that there are scenes and descriptions of graphic violent torture that could offend.  I did find it hard to eat lunch and read them but I am a trooper.

I found the ending was not satisfying but this was a stand-alone book and it seems pretty certain that there won’t be a sequel.  I loved the book, would be happy to get a hardcover/paperback so I could keep it on my mystery shelf.

One last point, I have read or watched hundreds of mysteries and didn’t know what was going on here.  Brilliantly written.  Recommended to every fan of Fiction Noir.  A spectacular private eye book worth the time and money.  Buy this book.

Is it hot where you are? Do you have a trip to the beach planned this summer?

When I was a kid our favorite beach spot was Ocean City, Maryland. I remember sitting on the bottom when the tide went out with the water up to my shoulders and tiny gentle waves washing toward me. I’ve tried to recreate that effect in my adult life. It was such a serene relaxing experience.

These days, I live on the bayou with alligators and such so getting in the water isn’t as enticing an experience. But one thing I remember was packing my beach bag with books, a beach towel and sunscreen so I could stretch out and wile away the hours with a great book.

If you like a great spicy love story, you might like to pack Undone, my sexy romantic adventure in your book bag or on your e-reader. I fell in love with Cass McKay, the sexy Aussie gem hunter when I first met him. And I fell in love with his picture on the cover even though it didn’t show his face. I’ve never considered redoing the cover because well, it’s just so Cass. I hope you love him, too. It’s available on all retailers.

Oh my God, what was happening to them? Agony clamped down on her heart. How could she make this right? Shoulders slumped; he held his shaking hands in front of his face as if he didn’t recognize them as his own. “I’m sorry,” He whispered raggedly.

“Cass—”

Cass held up an unsteady hand. He only had a few words left and he wanted to get them said. He wiped his hand over his face, disgusted. Looking down he saw the rose petals crushed and broken beneath his feet. Like his heart.

He’d done it again; he’d given up his self-respect to this woman who only wanted him for sex and a piece of glorified rock. And this time he’d forced himself on her in an act not entirely of love.

It was over.

He placed his fingers on her chin and waited until she returned his gaze. “When are you going to figure out that you became the successful, intelligent, creative woman you are, despite that sonofabitch of a father? You might flash the Blood in your father’s face, but you’ll only be disappointed if you think it will make him respect you.”

“No, I—”

He pulled his pants on, his shoulders hunched, shook his head. When he turned to her, she ached at the pain and defeat in his eyes.

“You’re terrified of relying on someone, on me— trusting me.”

She couldn’t speak because what he said was true. At least it had been— once.

He stroked her cheek, a slight tremor in his fingers then his hand dropped to his side, “You’re breaking my heart, sheila.”

He walked to the door, said quietly, “Whatever it takes, I’ll get your opal. Then maybe I can move on.”

“But—” he’d tuned her out.

“I won’t touch you again.” As if all his energy had been drained, he rested his forehead against the hard wood. “I have to try to move on.”

Then he was gone.

Book Blurb:

Ridley Meyer’s latest murder left him unsatisfied, but the spitfire with the U-haul may provide just the challenge he craves.

Veterinarian Audrey West is running out of time, yet she is determined to keep her inherited home out of foreclosure. Just when Audrey thinks she might pull off the impossible, she finds her dream is not the only thing being followed.

Scott Romero has it all—money, ambition and a growing reputation as the city’s top veterinary surgeon. However, when his best friend Audrey is abducted by a killer, Scott realizes what he doesn’t have and he must risk losing his job, and his life, to save her.

Don’t Look Back was a 2007 Romantic Suspense finalist in the Romance Writer’s of America Golden Heart writing contest.

Excerpt:

He leaned in to scrutinize his work. “Let me see.”

She turned toward him.

He pushed her hand out of the way. He poked. He prodded. He pressed. “I did Doctor Frankenstein proud. Maybe my step-mother was right. I should’ve been a real doctor. At least I wouldn’t have risked my veterinary license stitching you up.”

“I don’t—”

“I know. I know. You don’t like hospitals.”

“It’ll take more than a little thump to get me in one again.”

“Little thumps don’t require stitches. Little thumps don’t give you a concussion. And little thumps don’t get you almost killed.”

“Not this again.”

“Yes. This again.”

He raised his hands and took a step back. “Do me a favor.”

“What’s that?”

“The next time one of your clients waves a gun around, stay out of the way.”

“What in the purple hell did you expect me to do? Let her kill herself?”

“You should’ve gone for help.”

“Ms. Sims wasn’t trying to hurt me. Her dog, her baby, dropped dead. She was distraught, disturbed. If I hadn’t nosedived into the bench grabbing for the gun, I doubt I’d’ve had a scratch on me.” Audrey squeezed her head to keep it from exploding.

“You’re not Superwoman. Bullets won’t bounce off you.”

She didn’t have the energy for this. “Finished?”

“Not hardly.” Scott tilted his head and gave her that sexy half-smile. That devilish smile. That maddening smile the lucky few had followed to his bed.

It was too painful to think about, and not just because of her headache, so she pushed it from her mind. “Thanks for letting me crash at your place last night. And for stitching me up.”

She’d stuffed everything she owned into her truck and U-Haul trailer. That wasn’t saying much since the truck and trailer were small.

“Staying at a hotel by yourself with a concussion wasn’t and option. As for the other, I don’t know how you talked me into it. You’ll probably have a scar.”

“Not a problem as long as your malpractice is paid.”

A laugh rumbled his chest, but the smile quickly slid from his lips. “You should stay a day or two. Make sure you’re really okay.”

Audrey scooched back and propped herself up against the leather headboard. Her brain protested behind the fireworks and the nine-piece drumline. “I’ve only got thirty days to finish the repairs on my uncle’s house. I have to leave today. I’ll call you from the road, let you know I haven’t bled out into my head.”

“Not funny.” Scott frowned but kept her gaze. “I’m due at the animal hospital at seven. I’m going to miss having you around. Guess I can’t talk you into staying for good, huh?”

“What?” Her voice jumped two octaves. “Who’s the one who stood in my kitchen two weeks ago and told me I should go? ‘This is your last chance to make good on your promise to your uncle,’ you said. ‘Take a chance on your dream,’ you said. Don’t even—”

“Down, girl.” Scott eased her back into the pillows with a hand on her shoulder.

Thank God. Hells-bells clanged in her head.

“Forget I said anything. At least sleep for a few more hours and then head out. You don’t look so hot.”

No kidding.

He patted her leg and by the way he didn’t get up to leave, she knew he wanted to say more, but he wasn’t any better at goodbyes than she was. Then Scott braced his hands on either side of her head, and planted a quick kiss on her nose. Like an adult to a child.

It might have hurt less if he’d eviscerated her with a spork.

She was leaving Texas. This morning. For good.

She snagged his tie. “If that’s the best you can do, Romero, it’s no wonder your girlfriends leave you.”

Why had she baited him? He couldn’t refuse a challenge, any more than a dachshund could refuse table scraps.

Was her mind muddled from the concussion? Or was she finally thinking clearly? One kiss. That’s all she wanted.

Like a lover, not a friend. Stupid. He’d locked her in the friend-zone years ago.

Except for the night of her high school graduation.

And two weeks ago when he’d convinced her she should leave.

The look in his eyes was the same now as then. Want, need, hunger.

Hand over hand she pulled him down. His lips brushed hers. Her breath caught. She blamed the

concussion. Her hands trembled. She blamed the pain. Her heart hurt. She blamed herself.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, deepened the kiss, tasted the coffee on his tongue, smelled the subtle tang of surgical scrub that never quite left his skin. She tilted her head, and he nipped her lips, traced the line of her jaw and down to her pounding pulse at the base of her neck. She guided him on top of her, his weight braced on his arms, but she drew him down until his full weight pinned her.

She floated.

No fears, no worries, no will power.

No wondering if she should stop or if she could stop – because she didn’t want to stop.

Good Enough to Dream by Roger Kahn @Dodger_Kahn #bookreview #baseball #FridayReads

Good Enough to Dream

Title: Good Enough to Dream

Author: Roger Kahn

Genre: Baseball, Sports, Memoir

Book Blurb:

Roger Kahn’s first major league hit, THE BOYS OF SUMMER, was his runaway bestseller that immortalized the 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers. Now Kahn does the same for players whose moment in the sun has not yet arrived.

GOOD ENOUGH TO DREAM is the story of Kahn’s year as owner of the Class A, very minor league, Utica Blue Sox. Most of the Blue Sox never made it to the majors, but they all shared the dream that links the small child in the sandlot with the superstar who has just smacked one out of the stadium. This is a look at baseball unadorned, a game still sweet enough to lure grown men to leagues where first-class transportation was an old school bus and the infield was likely to be the consistency of thick soup. It is a funny and poignant story of one season, and one special team, that will make us hesitate before we ever call anything “bush league” again.

Praise for Roger Kahn:

“As a kid, I loved sports first and writing second, and loved everything Roger Kahn wrote. As an adult, I love writing first and sports second, and love Roger Kahn even more.” —Pulitzer Prize winner, David Maraniss

“He can epitomize a player with a single swing of the pen.” —TIME magazine

“Roger Kahn is the best baseball writer in the business.” —Stephen Jay Gould, New York Review of Books

“Kahn has the almost unfair gift of easy, graceful writing.” —BOSTON HERALD

My Review:

A book about the 1983 Blue Sox by Roger Kahn.

This is a wonderful book because it is not about a team you intrinsically know.  This is not the story of the ‘55 Dodgers or the ‘61 Yankees or the ‘75 Reds or the ‘77 Yankees or the ‘87 Twins or ‘91 Twins or ‘92 Blue Jays or ‘93 Blue Jays.

This is a story about a bunch of young guys who play baseball because they have the chance to be paid for the privilege.  It is a chronological tale that covers the season that has fun, sadness, excitement, turmoil and simply life and baseball.

A fantastic read for every baseball fan and for everyone who might like baseball.  A treasured part of my baseball book library that I have owned for decades.

Disclaimer: I bought the hardcover when it was first released in 1985.

Author Biography:

Roger Kahn, a prize-winning author, grew up in Brooklyn, where he says everybody on the boys’ varsity baseball team at his prep school wanted to play for the Dodgers. None did. He has written nineteen books. Like most natives of Brooklyn, he is distressed that the Dodgers left. “In a perfect world,” he says, “the Dodgers would have stayed in Brooklyn and Los Angeles would have gotten the Mets.”

Friday Book Round-Up Batters Up to Some Amazing #Memoirs! #books #FridayReads

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. Baseball is heating up, along with the weather, and my thoughts turn to some of my favorite baseball memoirs. This is different from MR N’s all-time favorite baseball books because, well, it’s me, MRS N. I’ve been a HUGE fan of baseball since I was little. I attended every Minnesota Twins game (with my grandparents) in 1987 and saw their miraculous World Series win! So, here are my top baseball memoirs:

I Love This Game!: My Life and Baseball by Kirby Puckett

The smiling, perpetually upbeat Minnesota Twins center fielder recounts his life on and off the field, including an in-depth discussion of a career that includes two World Series rings, five Gold Glove awards, and many other accolades.

Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir by Doris Kearns Goodwin

By the award-winning author of Team of Rivals and The Bully Pulpit, Wait Till Next Year is Doris Kearns Goodwin’s touching memoir of growing up in love with her family and baseball.

Set in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, Wait Till Next Year re-creates the postwar era, when the corner store was a place to share stories and neighborhoods were equally divided between Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans.

We meet the people who most influenced Goodwin’s early life: her mother, who taught her the joy of books but whose debilitating illness left her housebound: and her father, who taught her the joy of baseball and to root for the Dodgers of Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, and Gil Hodges. Most important, Goodwin describes with eloquence how the Dodgers’ leaving Brooklyn in 1957, and the death of her mother soon after, marked both the end of an era and, for her, the end of childhood.

The Umpire Strikes Back by Ron Luciano, David Fisher

Here is Ron Luciano, the funniest ump ever to call balls and strikes, a huge and awesome legend who leaps and spins and shoots players with an index finger while screaming OUTOUTOUT!!!! Now, baseball’s flamboyant fan-on-the-field comes out from behind the mask to call the game as he really sees it.

Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain by Marty Appel

Our captain and leader has not left us, today, tomorrow, this year, next … Our endeavors will reflect our love and admiration for him.”

—Honorary plaque to Munson in Yankee Stadium

Thurman Munson is remembered by fans as the fiercely competitive, tough, and—most of all—inspiring Yankee captain and champion from the wild Bronx Zoo years. He is also remembered for his tragic death, at age thirty-two, when the private plane he was piloting crashed in Canton, Ohio, on August 2, 1979.

Munson is the intimate biography of a complex and larger-than-life legend. Written by former Yankees public relations director Marty Appel, who worked closely with Thurman throughout his career, Munson captures the little-known details of the young man from Canton and his meteoric rise to stardom in baseball’s most storied franchise. Appel examines the tumultuous childhood that led Thurman to work feverishly to escape Canton—and also the marriage and cultural roots that continually drew him back.

Appel also opens a fascinating door on the famed Yankees of the 1970s, recounting moments and stories that have never been told before. From the clubhouse and the dugout to the front office and the owner’s box, this thoughtful baseball biography delves into the affectionately gruff captain’s relationships with friends, fans, and teammates such as Lou Piniella, Bobby Murcer, Graig Nettles, and Reggie Jackson, as well as his colorful dealings with manager Billy Martin and his surprisingly close bond with owner George Steinbrenner. Munson paints a revealing portrait of a private Yankee superstar, as well as a nostalgic and revelatory look at the culture—and amazing highs and lows—of the 1970s New York Yankees teams. More than a biography, Munson is the definitive account of a champion who has not been forgotten and of the era he helped define—written with the intimate detail available only to a true insider.

Kent Hrbek’s Tales from the Minnesota Twins Dugout (Tales) by Kent Hrbek  (Author), Dennis Brackin (Contributor)

Big first baseman Kent Hrbek was one of the games true characters, a throwback whose personal tastes were every bit as Ruthian as the monstrous homers for which he is remembered. At a time when professional athletes were discovering the benefits of personal trainers and dieticians, he frequently expressed his preference for a diet of junk food and beer. He and teammates like Gary Gaetti, Tom Brunansky, and late Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett played the game with a passion seldom seen in modern sports, and brought fun and humor into the Twins clubhouse. It was a place where a manager had to ban the cleaning of fish in the trainers room, and where practical jokes were more commonplace than scouting reports. It wasnt all fun and games, however. Hrbek and Gaetti became best friends, but had that friendship strained when Gaetti found religion and tried to push his beliefs including no beer onto Hrbek. Finally, late in his career, Hrbek battled serious shoulder injuries before retiring.

Babe: The Legend Comes to Life by Robert W Creamer

“The best biography ever written about an American sports figure.” —Sports Illustrated

Nearly a century has passed since George Herman Ruth made his major league debut, and in that time millions of words have been used to describe baseball’s greatest hero. But for a man like the Babe, for whom the phrase “larger than life” seems to have been coined, those millions of words have created a mythologized legacy. Who was the real Babe Ruth?

Relying on exhaustive research and interviews with teammates, family members, and friends, historian Robert W. Creamer separates fact from fiction and paints an honest and fascinating portrait of the slugger. This is the definitive biography of a man who was, in legend and in truth, the best who ever lived.

Casey Stengel: Baseball’s Greatest Character by Marty Appel

The definitive biography of one of baseball’s most enduring and influential characters, from New York Times bestselling author and baseball writer Marty Appel.

As a player, Charles Dillon “Casey” Stengel’s contemporaries included Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, and Christy Mathewson . . . and he was the only person in history to wear the uniforms of all four New York teams: the Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, and Mets. As a legendary manager, he formed indelible, complicated relationships with Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Billy Martin. For more than five glorious decades, Stengel was the undisputed, quirky, hilarious, and beloved face of baseball–and along the way he revolutionized the role of manager while winning a spectacular ten pennants and seven World Series Championships.

But for a man who spent so much of his life in the limelight–an astounding fifty-five years in professional baseball–Stengel remains an enigma. Acclaimed New York Yankees’ historian and bestselling author Marty Appel digs into Casey Stengel’s quirks and foibles, unearthing a tremendous trove of baseball stories, perspective, and history. Weaving in never-before-published family documents, Appel creates an intimate portrait of a private man who was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966 and named “Baseball’s Greatest Character” by MLB Network’s Prime 9. Casey Stengel is a biography that will be treasured by fans of our national pastime.

Five Seasons: A Baseball Companion by Roger Angell

Roger Angell’s chronicle of baseball’s most fascinating and unforgettable years

Classic New Yorker sportswriter Roger Angell calls 1972 to 1976 “the most important half-decade in the history of the game.” The early to mid-1970s brought unprecedented changes to America’s ancient pastime: astounding performances by Nolan Ryan and Hank Aaron; the intensity of the “best-ever” 1975 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox; the changes growing from bitter and extended labor strikes and lockouts; and the vast new influence of network television on the game. Angell, always a fan as well as a writer, casts a knowing but noncynical eye on these events, offering a fresh perspective to baseball’s continuing appeal during this brilliant and transformative era.

The last thing she wants is a fling. Then she runs into an old friend and ski partner—the one man she always wanted who never wanted her.

After a magical day on the slopes, a snow storm traps them in an avalanche of chemistry neither can deny. Will their friendship survive the weight of their passion or will they surface as more than friends?

Excerpt

“Monroe.”

My last name floated over the buzz of chair lifts and chatting skiers, but I ignored it. Monroe was a common name. And I didn’t know anyone in Washington.

I shifted on my knees, gripped the lever, and yanked again. Nothing moved. With a growl, I yanked harder. The lever broke free with a pop. I rocked back on my heels and snapped the seats into place.

“Taya Monroe.”

This time the voice pulled me upright so fast I whacked my head on the padded ceiling. Monroe might be a common name, but I’d never met another Taya.

I backed out of the hatch, planted my feet in the snow, and looked around the small, almost empty emergency parking lot. A tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a black helmet, mirrored goggles, and a red ski-patrol jacket stood near the entrance to the old, wooden first aid shack. I couldn’t see his eyes but I could’ve sworn he was staring at me. My hands dropped to my sides as I strained to identify him.

“Don’t you recognize me? I’m hurt.”

A familiar shiver ran down my spine. That deep, smooth voice. That sensual mouth curving into an impish grin. The hairs on the back of my neck stood at attention, almost quivering.

Jordan Wiley.

A ball of excitement bloomed in the pit of my stomach. “Jordan!”

I made it all of two steps before his long legs brought him close enough to sweep me into a spinning hug, the heavy weight of my ski boots flying behind me. His strong arms engulfed me. I melted into him, heat fusing us together through our jackets and layers. As my boots crunched on the snow-covered ground, frigid air filled the space where his body had been.

Jordan kept his left arm draped over my shoulders and squeezed me close, making up for the sudden separation of our torsos. My right arm twined around his waist. When he pulled his goggles up onto his helmet the full force gaze of his warm brown eyes washed over me, and my knees went weak.

“What are you doing here?” My brain struggled to process the sudden reappearance of my old friend in my life, while my body reacted the same way it always did around Jordan—inappropriately.

New Beginnings have given the Levesque girls a new start in life, will More Beginnings be another chance for them?

♥♦♥ EXCERPT ♥♦♥
Zach Taylor’s young neighbour, Mia, let out a long sigh as she joined him on his front porch and sat next to him on the swing. Enjoying a cool lemonade, he invited her to grab a soft drink from the fridge as well. It was a warm summer day, and the air showed no sign of cooling down. A lot of people in Hobart were weary of the unusual hot spell for
the very southern Australian city.
With another hefty sigh, Mia raked through her long, blond hair and stared into the distance. “Honestly, Zach, she’s a dragon. I’m sure she does it on purpose. She doesn’t like me. She thinks I’m spoilt.”
The dragon in question was Miss Peterson, Mia’s high school English teacher. There was no doubt that Mia liked school, and she enjoyed her classes. And even though English wasn’t her worst subject, it certainly was the toughest one, with Miss Peterson piling on
homework one after the other.
Zach took a sip of his drink before he replied, “Hey, pumpkin, settle down. What’s that supposed to mean you’re ‘spoilt’?”
She lifted her shoulder in a slight shrug. “You know!”
Raising his brows, he replied, “Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?”
Another shrug. “Kind of, I suppose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy coffee and cake instead every once in a while.”
Ignoring his chuckle, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click as she returned outside and took a long sip.

Title: Viable Threat

Author: Julie Rowe

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Special Forces soldier and medic Walter River would give anything to snatch more than a few seconds of down time to see if he can rattle the no-nonsense and incredibly hot Dr. Lloyd he’s protecting, but dodging explosions, snipers, and student radicals who’ve unleashed a lethal bio-engineered microorganism have made that almost impossible. Maybe he’ll get a chance—if he can figure out how to keep them both alive.

CDC microbiologist Ava Lloyd races to find a cure for a bio-terrorism organism sweeping El Paso. The few stolen moments with her very hunky bodyguard River have been explosive, but no matter how alluring he is, she can’t afford to get distracted. The clock is ticking, people are dying by the hundreds, and once this crisis is solved, they’ll both be off on their next assignment, thousands of miles apart.

My Review:

Special Forces soldier and medic River “just call me River ma’am” gets a call from the head of the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to come at once to a local hospital. There’s an outbreak of some deadly disease and she commands him to watch over Dr. Ava Lloyd, a microbiologist. He’s armed and ready for anything but one minute in Dr. Floyd’s presence and he’s smitten. She’s hot and smart… a total turn-on.

Ava has seen her share of outbreaks but this one doesn’t respond to any antibodies and those who’re responsible are a mystery. It’s chemically altered and as the bodies pile up, every agency from the CDC to Homeland Security is on the case. Is it a terrorist attack or something deadlier? Working with River sets her body aflame but she promised herself she’d never trust her heart to a soldier again. Can he be trusted or is it just a fling?

I’m a huge fan of Julie Rowe and this is her best book yet! The stakes couldn’t be higher and the attraction between River and Ava set my tablet aflame. You wouldn’t think that being blown up a few times while wearing hazmat suits would be sexy but you’d be wrong. The action scenes were intense and there were times when I was afraid Ava or River might die. There’s plenty of romance, although since many lives are at stake, Ava and River take it whenever and wherever they can. I connected with both Ava and River immediately and almost cried when it ended. I wanted more!

Ripped from the headlines, Viable Threat is an adrenaline-rushing romantic suspense and a must read! The ending left it open for a sequel so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Favorite Character/Quote: Ava. I loved how brilliant she is (hello microbiologist) while being tough as nails and yet, there’s a vulnerability when it comes to the opposite sex and love. She’s all business when she first meets River and bristles at his nickname for her. But the more they work together, her walls come down and we catch a glimpse of the real woman underneath.

Curse of the Healer by @AshleyYork1066 #bookreview #MedievalMonday #historicalromance

CofH-NOOK

Title: Curse of the Healer

Author: Ashley York

Genre: Historical Romance

Book Blurb:

After the death of Brian Boru in 1014, a legend arose of a healer so great she could raise a man from the dead, with a power so strong it could make any warrior the next high king of Éire…and to steal it away from her, he need only possess her.

Fated to be a healer…

Aednat has spent her entire life training to be the great healer, knowing she must remain alone. When she meets Diarmuid, the intense attraction she feels toward him shakes her resolve to believe in such a legend. If she gives in to the passion he ignites in her, can she settle for being less?

Destined to be his…

Diarmuid of Clonascra is renowned for his bravery in battle. Only one thing daunts him: the prospect of taking a wife. The safest course would be to keep his distance from Aednat, the bold, headstrong healer who’s far too tempting for his peace of mind. But his overking orders him to protect her from a group of craven warriors intent on kidnapping her to steal her power.

What starts as duty for Diarmuid quickly transforms into something more. Aednat’s power might be at risk, but so is his closed-off heart.

My Review:

Get ready to be swept away to 11th century Ireland in Curse of the Healer, book one of a brand-new series from Award-Winning author Ashley York. There’s a legend which speaks of a great healer, someone’s whose power is so great, she could raise a man from the dead. To possess her power and become the next high king of Éire, all a man needs to do is steal her virginity.

Aednat has spent her whole life training to be a healer, possibly the great healer, but all she’s learned is put to the test when she meets Diarmuid. If the legend is correct and she’s the great healer, her powers will disappear once she marries. No matter how tempting it is to fall into Diarmuid’s arms, she won’t give up her healing abilities. But when an evil warrior comes to take her away (to steal her powers), she has no choice but to marry Diarmuid and flee the home she’s known since she was a child.

Diarmuid’s a fierce warrior and the last thing he expected is to be married to a healer, one with a sharp tongue and an independent spirit. But his overlord begged him to protect her and Diarmuid agreed. She sets his body on fire but could he let her into his heart? It takes a kidnapping and a near-death experience for Diarmuid to realize what his heart knew all along… love comes along in unusual packages and you must cherish it.

I’m a big fan of York’s Norman Conquest series and was so excited when I heard she was starting a new series. Curse of the Healer plunges the reader into 1095 Ireland and you experience everything the characters experience. You can smell the horses, wilderness, muck and mire along with passionate embraces. York intersperses language of the time period as well as a glossary. This was incredibly helpful in reading and envisioning various scenes. I got so engrossed in the language and setting that my husband said I had acquired a slight Celtic accent.

The characters, though, are what drive this historical romance. I loved how Aednat had a deformity that caused her to be shunned as a child but that didn’t stop her from being happy. She was rescued and adopted into Diarmuid’s overlord’s family. Sure, she had a low opinion of her beauty but that’s only natural. Diarmuid, meanwhile, doesn’t seem to notice her club foot and his care for her endeared me to him throughout the book. Both characters go through immense growth and it’s only when they work together, do they heal each other.

If you love historical romance, you have to pick up this book. You’ll be swept away by the landscape, the history and the romance. A must read!

Favorite Character/Quote: Diarmuid. I loved his tenderness towards Aednat, even when she was sparring with him. His love for her moved me and how he loved her for who she was and not just because he was duty-bound to protect her. He’s a strong warrior with a sharp mind and while he thinks he knows what kind of wife he wants, what he needs is Aednat. Tough, strong, tender… a true leader.

A bride, jail and the man of her dreams: One Night Behind Bars by @melissa_keir #romance

onenightbehindbars (1)

Title: One Night Behind Bars

Author: Melissa Keir

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Small Town Romance

Book Blurb:

A Bride, Jail and the Man of her Dreams…

Instead of marrying the man of her dreams, bride-to-be Jeannie Hall spends the night behind bars accused of domestic terrorism. Her groom loses no time marrying someone else. As if this isn’t enough, when she’s cleared of the charges and released, she becomes the target of a vengeful person, and the stakes keep getting higher.

Deputy Hank Walker knows the beautiful woman is innocent, but he was forced to do his duty. Determined to find out who set her up, he starts digging deeper and vows to protect the woman who had stolen his heart.

Master matchmaker Draikoh San arranges for Jeannie and Hank to have a night to remember, but when a killer comes after them, will the two lovebirds end up wearing body bags or wedding rings?

Excerpt:

“A customer…sorta. Maybe this will jog your memory.” The woman swung her arm, flashing a diamond bracelet.

The bracelet clicked in her mind, and she recalled helping Clinton pick it out. Her stomach plummeted as the events of her “almost” wedding day flew through her mind. Her happiness faltered.

“I can see you’ve realized who I am.” Her shark grin firmly in place, the woman whispered, “I’m Clinton’s wife…not you.”

Taking a deep breath, Jeannie let it blow out slowly between her lips. Today was the day she’d dreaded. She was finally face-to-face with the woman who had stolen her dream. “Congratulations.” She forced the words out between tightly closed teeth. “I read in the tabloids about the wedding. Funny how closely your dress resembled my own. So, other than gloating, what brings you in today?”

“You’re being very calm for someone who lost the love of her life,” she sneered.

“I’ve come to realize Clinton couldn’t have loved me if he married you when I was unavailable for a few hours.” She raised an eyebrow and cocked her head. “Again—can I help you with a purchase?”

“Have you really forgotten Clinton’s kisses? His shy laughter? Or are you putting up a front for me?” Susan pointed to Jeannie’s bare finger. “It’s obvious there’s no one else in your life. Maybe you’re still pining for my husband.”

Susan clearly had no plans to make a purchase. No longer playing nice, Jeannie gritted her teeth. “My love life isn’t any of your business. If you aren’t here to shop, why are you here?”

Susan straightened her shoulders and glared. “Don’t get all snippy with me.”

Jeannie refused to rise to the bait, and silence lingered until it became uncomfortable. She had learned to use not talking to her advantage and had all day to wait.

Unholy Alliance by @RowlandKathleen is a Heart-Pounding #Thriller! #bookreview

UnholyAlliancebyKathleenRowland200

Title: Unholy Alliance

Author: Kathleen Rowland

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

A decade ago, Tori Rourke, and her cousin, Vivienne, ran from the Irish mob after witnessing a brutal murder. Tori was framed by the mob, and while she served time in prison, she worried that the killer, Seamus McGinn, had kidnapped her missing cousin.

Attorney Grady D. Fletcher, defender of the wrongly condemned, appeals Tori’s case and wins her release. Now, going by Victoria Morningstar, she runs a food truck from a seedy waterfront neighborhood, hoping to find her cousin’s kidnapper.

When Grady agrees to defend a new client, Samuel Peterson, who’s been accused of beating to death the wife of a noted professor, the evidence mounts. The professor is missing, as well as his laptop that contains data dangerous to national security.

And Seamus McGinn is back, and rumors of a massive annihilation is about to begin. As they race to assist the FBI, the bonds between Grady and Tori are about to be tested. It becomes clear Grady and Tori are falling fast for each other, but what to do about it is a different story. He’s a divorced dad who wants more time with his kid. She brings danger to his front door.

Grady has questions of his own; Is Vivienne at the center of the mob’s operation? How much will it cost Tori before she learns the truth? All Grady knows is the biggest danger is the one standing right behind you.

My Review:

Victoria Morningstar has spent the last ten years in prison, innocent of the brutal murder she was convicted of. Now, thanks to attorney Grady Fletcher, she’s a free woman. Free from prison, yes, but not from the Irish mob or the man who framed her for murder, Seamus McGinn.

By day, she runs a food truck out of a less than stellar neighborhood and by night, she’s scouring every lead she can to try to find her cousin, Vivienne. Tori’s convinced Seamus has kidnapped her cousin, doing unspeakable torture to her. Tori’s drive propels her into danger but instead of being cautious, she plows ahead.

Grady agrees to defend a new client and the more he investigates, the more he realizes McGinn is back and on the hunt for Tori. Corruption, political intrigue and attempts on Tori’s life throws Grady into the middle of a feud he can’t stop and his heart might be the next victim. Will he throw his son in the crosshairs of the mob to save Tori or is it all too much for him?

I loved this heart-pounding thriller and while the publisher states it’s romantic suspense, I’d classify it more as a thriller. There’s tons of action scenes, a suspenseful plot and the romance really takes a back-seat. A tad disappointing to this romantic suspense fan, thus the four-star rating.

Tori is an amazingly tough and strong heroine. I don’t know if I’d throw myself into the clutches of the one man who framed me for murder. I’d disappear, trekking to Antarctica and living with a colony of penguins.

This is my first book by Kathleen Rowland and I must admit that Unholy Alliance scared me a few times. She’s got an incredible ability to build suspense with detailed narration and characters’ high stakes. I could visualize each scene and it played out like a movie. The secondary characters were well-developed and intriguing. Even McGinn piqued my interest. Highly recommend this thriller!

“Is it too late for second chances?” The Rebel’s Redemption by @JacqBiggar #romanticsuspense

JacquieBiggar_TheRebelsRedemption_800px

Title: The Rebel’s Redemption (Book 2 Wounded Hearts Series)

Author: Jacquie Biggar

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Is it too late for second chances?

Jared Martin left Tidal Falls a hotheaded youth. Eight years in the military has turned him into a cynical, disillusioned man.

Then he returns home to find out he’s a father.

When an old enemy follows and causes mayhem in the small town, can Jared overcome the odds to protect the woman he’s always loved and the child he never knew?

Or is it be too late for them to have a second chance?

Excerpt:

Jared’s world narrowed down to the little black barrel of the gun pointed at his chest. Funny, in all the years of being in the SEAL teams he’d never been in this situation. Not to say he hadn’t dodged his share of bullets. It’s just they’d always erupted like a hailstorm, out of nowhere. This was somewhere. The back alley of his mother’s freaking café in freaking America to be exact. What the hell?

If he wasn’t so pissed off at himself for getting into this situation, he might have laughed. Eight years overseas off and on, and he was going to get shot in his own backyard. How’s that for ironic?

“Look man, why don’t we talk about this?” Jared forced his gaze to focus on Sergei’s steely gaze instead of the muzzle of the semi-automatic.

“The time for talk is past,” the Russian said. “You ignored my advice and instead made a fool out of me with that stupid trick you performed.”

“Advice? You call beating the livin’ shit out of me, advice?” Jared ground his teeth together, and fought to keep a level tone. “You can’t blame a guy for wanting to retaliate.” A crash by the garbage caused both men to crouch into a fight stance. A tabby cat raced away. Jared straightened, his heart knocking against his ribcage, as desperate to escape this mess as the animal. He needed to defuse the situation before someone came upon them; please God not his mom.

“Okay, you’re right. I shouldn’t have set off alarms or caused those slots to pay out. But seriously dude, you can’t go around acting all KGB, we’re in the good old USA now.” Jared kept a careful eye on the guy’s trigger finger and cursed his loose tongue. What part of defuse couldn’t he figure out?

Sergei tipped his felt hat back on his bald head like an old time gunslinger. His hand holding the gun never wavered. “You have big mouth.”

Yeah, I’ve heard that a time or ten.

“Why don’t we handle this like two adults? I’ll call your boss, tell him I screwed up and it’ll never happen again…” There was no doubt on that, if he ever went near a casino again he’d kick his own ass. “And then you can go back to ruling your little kingdom far, far, away.”

Viable Threat by @JulieRoweAuthor #romanticsuspense #books #newrelease #TuesdayBookBlog

ViableThreat_500

Title: Viable Threat

Author: Julie Rowe

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Publisher: Entangled Publishing

Excerpt:

She rested her head against the back of the seat and gave him a strange sort of sad smile. “You know what I’d like to do right now?”

He grunted and wagged his index finger. “That is a trick question.”

She laughed. “Yeah, I guess it is.”

He liked seeing the smile on her face. He liked seeing her face, period. “Tell me, Mouse, what would you like to do right now?”

She waved him closer, and he leaned toward her. She did it again, then put a hand on his shoulder and pulled herself up so she could whisper in his ear, “I’d like to take that respirator off you and kiss you, silly.”

She let go of him and resumed her previous position on the seat. He sat perfectly still. It took just about everything in him to not rip the mask off and grant her wish.

“I’m sorry,” she said, with as close to soundless as a voice could get. “I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.”

He looked at her and realized she thought he was embarrassed or some shit like that.

“I’m uncomfortable,” he murmured. “Because I’ve had a damned hard-on since I bandaged you up.” Her pupils widened, and her mouth dropped open. “When this is over, you can kiss any part of me you want for as long as you like, just as long as I can return the favor.”

“Oh,” she breathed out. When her tongue licked over her lips, he had to chain his hands to his sides to keep from grabbing her.

Though a blush heated her cheeks, tears filled her eyes until they spilled over and tracked down her face. “Chances are, that’s just a dream.”

It just about killed him to see her so sad. “Hey.” He couldn’t keep the growl out of his voice. “No Negative Nancys allowed on this trip.”

“I’ve got a headache, River. A fever can’t be far behind.”

“That happy bastard Henry is going to come up with some kind of magic potion that will kick this bug’s ass.”

“If that were possible, we’d know.”

“We’ve been so busy blowing sh*t up, we might not have been told.”

She slanted a disbelieving glance at him. “You just spoke with our boss. I think she would have mentioned any magic potions, if they’d been available.”

He ran his hands through his hair. “Could you work with me, Mouse? We’ve got a mass murderer to catch, and I need you ready and able to help reel in the son-of-a-bitch.”

“Ah, I see what you’re doing. Trying to put me in a good mood.”

“Jesus f**k, woman, you think I’d tell you how much I want you just to put you in a good mood?” He leaned down, grabbing the top of the seat on either side of her head. “Do I look like a motivational speaker?”

She studied him, her gaze flicking across his face and uniform. Covered in dirt, debris, and blood, he looked like a walking nightmare. “You look like a soldier on a mission.”

“That’s true, but not all of it.” He whispered, “I’ve got another mission. A personal one. You.”

Shy Girls Write It Better (Some Girls Do It Book 1) by @MaySageAuthor #romance #FridayReads

Shy Girls

Title: Shy Girls Write It Better (Some Girls Do It Book 1)

Author: May Sage

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

Cassie Franklin trips over nothing on perfectly flat surfaces every day, and she cannot seem to be able to simultaneously speak and look into her audience’s eyes.
Cassandra Frank is the ultimate tease; her words have aroused, intrigued and captured the heart of thousands…
And somehow, they are the same person.

Hiding the fact that she writes erotica isn’t much of a challenge – no one would ever think that a plain, boring little accountant like Cassie could so much as read anything so scandalous…
But one day, she makes a huge mistake.

Carter Harris employs so many people he can’t exactly recall all their names, but strangely, he knows her. She isn’t an executive, she isn’t sexy, or otherwise noticeable, but the girl is cute – in a helpless, unique sort of way.
He can’t pretend to say she ever crosses his mind, though… Until the day he finds the manuscript she worked on during her lunch hour.

Shy girls write it better is an adult romance with explicit content. Standalone novella ending on a happily for now note.

My Review:

Disclaimer: This book is rated 18+ due to adult language (lots of swearing) and adult situations (sex scenes).

Cassie Franklin is a shy, introverted accountant at Harris Toys who’s hiding a deep secret. Accountant by day and bestselling erotic romance author by night. It all started when she had extra time at work and decided to write a romance to kill time. Flash forward and she’s got three bestsellers under her belt. Her shyness kills her social life but that doesn’t stop her from having a serious crush with the CEO of Harris Toys, Carter Harris.

Carter Harris is a busy man and when he first met Cassie, he thinks she’s cute and helpless. Her awkwardness makes him smile yet he never asks her out because for one, she’s an employee and for two, she’s not his type. But when a chance meeting in the breakroom between him and Cassie allows him a hidden glimpse into her alter ego, he can’t resist the temptation. They become friends and he even helps her with her brand new BDSM romance. Carter’s about to discover some girls (especially shy ones) do it better.

I loved this romance by May Sage! I’ve read her fairy tale retellings but with Shy Girls, I couldn’t put it down. I read it in one sitting. Addictive to read and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. The chemistry between Cassie and Carter sizzles on the page. Witty, humorous banter makes the dialogue sing and I could totally envision each scene.

Favorite Character/Quote: Cassie. She’s a shy, slightly clumsy girl who’s been in love with the head of Harris Toys for years. She’s smart and a successful erotic romance author, too. I loved the way she blossoms into an outgoing sexy woman in this book.

Please note that May writes novels and novellas. Some of her books end on cliffhanger. Read the description to know what you’re signing up for. Also: note that none of her books are suitable for those who like clean romance.

The Girl Who Cried Murder by Paula Graves @HarlequinBooks #romanticsuspense #bookreview

The Girl Who Cried Murder

Title: The Girl Who Cried Murder (Campbell Cove Academy)

Author: Paula Graves

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

A cold case is reopened, placing a witness in the crosshairs—and a bodyguard by her side…

Charlie Winters has caught security expert Mike Strong’s attention. A member of his self-defense class, she seems to need to know more than just how to protect herself. After a little digging, Mike discovers that the cute redhead has a reason to worry—she may have witnessed a murder. Using all of his connections, Mike tries to solve the cold case. But as Charlie’s memories from the past begin to resurface, her future seems marked for death. Offering up his skills as a bodyguard, Mike promises not to leave her side. And Charlie’s obvious relief at not having to fight alone convinces him there’s much more to this mystery he has yet to uncover.

My Review:

Ten years ago, Charlie’s best friend is killed in a hit and run accident. Memories are haunting Charlie and she starts asking questions. Someone is following Charlie and everything points to murder. Charlie signs up for a self-defense class just in case and piques the interest of ex-Marine Mike Strong. Mike offers to be her bodyguard and help her solve her friend’s murder after a few attempts are made on Charlie’s life.

Mike has never met anyone like Charlie and the more he’s around her, the more he craves her company. But someone is out to get her and Mike’s instincts kick in. Just when things are heating up between he and Charlie, the murderer gets reckless and goes after Mike. Will they survive this killer or is Charlie just The Girl Who Cried Murder?

I really loved this romantic suspense. Filled with twists and turns, Graves does a magnificent job weaving in romance with suspense. I loved that Charlie is independent and from the wrong side of the tracks. Charlie and Mike are a fantastic couple, feeding off each other’s strengths and nurturing each other’s weaknesses. A superb read and can’t wait to read more!

Disclaimer: I received a paperback copy for Christmas.

Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon III: The Manic Episode by Gabriel Bacopa #bookreview #satire

Eating Ice Cream III

Title: Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon III: The Manic Episode

Author: Gabriel Bacopa

Genre: Satire, Short Stories, Dystopian

Book Blurb:

Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon III: The Manic Episode

A.K.A. Global Warming Kicks in

Due to the Unbelievable success of Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon Part II, Gabriel Bacopa continues the series where Eating Ice Cream in Armageddon II left off:

After the war, the Ice Cream shop reopens, yet Michael is not welcome there anymore. Michael divorces Pakiza in a Manic Episode; climate change kicks in;. Michael decides to become a politician to win back Halima.

(Due to Unforeseen circumstances, Pakiza, Halima, and Sue will not be Michael’s epic sidekicks in this finale.)

“Women are like a sailboat. A man might steer them in one direction, but the wind, which is the world, pulls them another way.”
– Michael Mahrouq

Also includes:

Affirmative Action: A white social justice cashier lets Black people cut in line.

A Pilgrim’s Defense of the Disabled: Unveiled for the first time, the leader of the Pilgrim community in America made a decision as to how people with different disabilities should be treated.

Comatose: There is something Eerie about America these days.

My Review:

Another powerful work from the most prescient novelist of the 21st century.  The stories are well woven but carry much more than just the words… they are helping to define our current world, the current state of the United States and the current thoughts that prevail in far too many minds.  A great book and one that makes you cringe at how truthful the ‘fiction’ is.

Eating Ice Cream Part III – 5 stars

What a concise recap – brilliantly conveys part I and II in but a couple of sentences.  Not the story I expected.  This is 5 stars.  At first, I wasn’t 100% sure what the story was really about.  Then it came to me – this is a triumphant championing of the rights of the mentally ill.  Those who are so often cast aside or murdered in the streets are defended beautifully here in this story.  The pace of the story with the quick changes also harpoons the 21st century approach to the second by second attention span.  Society today bounces from story to story at breakneck speed and forgets one crisis for the next one.  This is perfectly illustrated in the writing.

Affirmative Action – 5+ stars

Justin is saying and doing what many good minding people wish they could say every day.  I laughed out loud so hard I disturbed other people with me at that time!  Every single white person in North America should be forced to read this story.  So realistic, a great take on the prevalent racism that plagues us all in the 21st century.

Comatose – 5++ stars

A telling commentary on the political climate in 2017 America.  The allusion to all being the same is not as farfetched as you would think.  The online supporters of a certain current President are in lockstep with that man and they appear to be as much him as he is they.  Makes one long for the 80’s when every home town had people like that but they were only found if you ran into them in a bar or at a city park.  Those with rabid beliefs now have the world at their fingertips and they unite and make the rest of the majority very uneasy.

For Beau: The Sarah Ashdown Story
by Simon Gandossi

9781524519872_pap.indd
Genre: Historical Fiction
Release Date: December 15th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

The ground shook with each bomb that fell on London. The night sky lit up, and the sounds of gunfire overwhelmed the city as our brave men fought back. It took so many bombs to fall on this great city to make the Germans realize that England could not be defeated. It took just one bomb to make one woman realize her true destiny.

Sarah Ashdown’s insurmountable guilt and remorse over the death of a young girl sets in motion one of the most unbelievable stories of World War II. An ordinary housewife who defied the odds to become one of the most wanted women in occupied Europe, her story of determination and courage will shock and inspire those who read it.

Inspiration Behind For Beau:

I remember like it was yesterday talking to a holocaust survivor during the writing of my first book “Elsa”. Talking to her and hearing how she wanted a different aspect to such a horrific time written inspired me to do just that. For Beau – The Sarah Ashdown Story my second book I took the same inspiration from a lady who experienced the horrors of WW2. I was privileged to be inspired by those who fought for freedom and who had to hold back tears when they spoke to me about their experiences.

When you watch a documentary on TV and listen to personal stories most of us feel something. However experiencing the emotion and sadness from hearing stories up close, I was inspired to take things one step further.

We all have definitions of heroes and they inspire us in so many ways. My heroes are slowly passing away but they will never stop inspiring me.

Excerpt:

“Hold me. Don’t let me go,” Laura said. She nuzzled his neck and sank into his strong embrace. “Love me,” she whispered in his ear. His muscles tensed in response. She wanted his arms around her, his lips touching hers.

They sank on the bed and held each other close. She was afraid to let him go, afraid the emptiness would find her, afraid of losing him, again. With an unending thirst, she focused on his mouth, the shape of his lips, the kisses that they promised.

His hand stroked the side of her body from her breast to her thigh, claiming them. One stroke of her breast and she tugged on his shirt. He didn’t hesitate. He obliged her and pulled it off. Her hand played down the hard planes of his chest. Her eyes widened at the sight of the scars on his chest.

“These weren’t here.” She traced them with her finger.

He stopped her hand and brought it to his lips. “Fighting for The Maxwell comes with a price. I don’t want to think of the Maxwell.” He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

She closed her eyes and reveled in the tingling sensation racing through her body and put her head on his shoulder.

He opened her bodice and stroked the top of her chest then, with trembling hands, touched her breasts. A low moan escaped her lips.

Jamie bent and kissed each breast.

He ignited a flame inside her that set her on fire. Delicious shudders pulsed through her. She pulled his head away and kissed him.

Her fingers traced the scars and the muscles of his chest danced at the light touch. “Where did you get this one?”

“In a fight with the English.” His rapt gaze focused on her face.

Her lips brushed against his skin.  His skin deckled in gooseflesh. Her finger moved on. “And this one?”

“A reiver attack,” his voice was husky and seductive.

The hooded passion in his eyes encouraged her. She kissed the scar and moved on. The tips of her fingers traced down his chest. “Here is another.” The scar snaked below his navel. Another kiss. Her fingers trailed down further.

He pulled her up and rolled on top of her. Her body instinctively arched against his. “You are mine.” His warm breath brushed against her face. Two heartbeats passed. “Do you hear me? You’re mine,” he said more urgently.

“Yes.” Her voice an intimate whisper. His lips tugged into a sideways grin.

His smile that made her bones go limp. It was his magic.
