Friday Book Round-Up Lists 10 Upcoming #Memoir #Books to Read #FridayReads

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. It’s finally Spring and my preferred genre switches to memoirs. I love reading about people’s lives, especially celebrities. I love hearing about their journey and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. Here are some upcoming biographies/memoirs I’m looking forward to reading:

I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons by Kevin Hart (Author), Neil Strauss (Contributor)

Superstar comedian and Hollywood box office star Kevin Hart turns his immense talent to the written word by writing some words. Some of those words include: the, a, for, above, and even even. Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller.

The question you’re probably asking yourself right now is: What does Kevin Hart have that a book also has?

According to the three people who have seen Kevin Hart and a book in the same room, the answer is clear:

A book is compact. Kevin Hart is compact.

A book has a spine that holds it together. Kevin Hart has a spine that holds him together.

A book has a beginning. Kevin Hart’s life uniquely qualifies him to write this book by also having a beginning.

It begins in North Philadelphia. He was born an accident, unwanted by his parents. His father was a drug addict who was in and out of jail. His brother was a crack dealer and petty thief. And his mother was overwhelmingly strict, beating him with belts, frying pans, and his own toys.

The odds, in short, were stacked against our young hero, just like the odds that are stacked against the release of a new book in this era of social media (where Hart has a following of over 100 million, by the way).

But Kevin Hart, like Ernest Hemingway, JK Rowling, and Chocolate Droppa before him, was able to defy the odds and turn it around. In his literary debut, he takes the reader on a journey through what his life was, what it is today, and how he’s overcome each challenge to become the man he is today.

And that man happens to be the biggest comedian in the world, with tours that sell out football stadiums and films that have collectively grossed over $3.5 billion.

He achieved this not just through hard work, determination, and talent: It was through his unique way of looking at the world. Because just like a book has chapters, Hart sees life as a collection of chapters that each person gets to write for himself or herself.

“Not only do you get to choose how you interpret each chapter, but your interpretation writes the next chapter,” he says. “So why not choose the interpretation that serves your life the best?”

How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life by Lilly Singh (Author)

From the 2017 People’s Choice Award winner for Favorite YouTube Star comes the definitive guide to being a bawse: a person who exudes confidence, hustles relentlessly and smiles genuinely because he or she has fought through it all and made it out the other side.

Lilly Singh isn’t just a superstar. She’s Superwoman—which is also the name of her wildly popular YouTube channel. Funny, smart and insightful, the actress and comedian covers topics ranging from relationships to career choices to everyday annoyances. It’s no wonder she’s garnered more than a billion views. But Lilly didn’t get to the top by being lucky—she had to work for it. Hard.

Now Lilly wants to share the lessons she learned while taking the world by storm, and the tools she used to do it. How to Be a Bawse is the definitive guide to conquering life. Make no mistake, there are no shortcuts to success, personal or professional. World domination requires real effort, dedication and determination. Just consider Lilly a personal trainer for your life—with fifty rules to get you in the game, including:

• Let Go of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): Temptation will try to steer you away from your goals. FOMO is just a test of your priorities, a test that a bawse is ready to pass.
• Be Nice to People: Treat niceness like an item on your daily to-do list. People will go out of their way to help and support you because you make them feel good.
• Schedule Inspiration: Lack of motivation isn’t permanent or a sign of weakness. Expect it and proactively schedule time to be creative.
• Be the Dumbest: Challenge yourself by surrounding yourself with people who know more than you do. It’s a vital way to learn and improve.

Told in Lilly’s hilarious, bold voice and packed with photos and candid stories from her journey to the top, How to Be a Bawse will make you love your life and yourself—even more than you love Beyoncé. (Yes, we said it!)

WARNING: This book does not include hopeful thoughts, lucky charms or cute quotes. That’s because success, happiness and everything else you want in life need to be worked for, not wished for. In Lilly’s world, there are no escalators, only stairs. Get ready to climb.

Advance praise for How to Be a Bawse:

“Lilly is a bona fide #girlboss, boss and bawse. Her meteoric rise has come with so many incredible lessons that we are all lucky to have access to. This book is a must-have for the hustler in all of us.” —Sophia Amoruso, founder and CEO, Girlboss

Theft by Finding: Diaries (1977-2002) by David Sedaris (Author)

One of the most anticipated books of 2017: Boston Globe, New York Times Book Review, New York‘s “Vulture”, The Week, Bustle, BookRiot

David Sedaris tells all in a book that is, literally, a lifetime in the making

It’s no coincidence that the world’s best writers tend to keep diaries. If you faithfully record your life in a journal, you’re writing every day–and if you write every day, you become a better writer. David Sedaris has kept a diary for forty years. This means that if you’ve kept a diary for a year of your life or less, Sedaris is at least forty times better at writing than you are.

In his diaries, he’s recorded everything that has captured his attention–overheard comments, salacious gossip, soap opera plot twists, secrets confided by total strangers. These observations are the source code for his finest work, and with them he has honed his self-deprecation and learned to craft his cunning, surprising sentences.

Now, for the first time, Sedaris shares his private writings with the world in Theft By Finding: Diaries 1977-2002. This is the first-person account of how a drug-abusing dropout with a weakness for the International House of Pancakes and a chronic inability to hold down a real job became one of the funniest people on the planet.

Most diaries — even the diaries of great writers — are impossibly dull, because they generally write about their emotions, or their dreams, or their interior life. Sedaris’s diaries are unique because they face outward. He doesn’t tell us his feelings about the world, he shows us the world instead, and in so doing he shows us something deeper about himself.

Written with a sharp eye and ear for the bizarre, the beautiful, and the uncomfortable, and with a generosity of spirit that even a misanthropic sense of humor can’t fully disguise, Theft By Finding proves that Sedaris is one of our great modern observers. It’s a potent reminder that there’s no such thing as a boring day–when you’re as perceptive and curious as Sedaris, adventure waits around every corner.

Ballplayer by Chipper Jones (Author), Carroll Rogers Walton (Author), Bobby Cox (Foreword)

Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones—one of the greatest switch-hitters in baseball history—shares his remarkable story, while capturing the magic nostalgia that sets baseball apart from every other sport.

Before Chipper Jones became an eight-time All-Star who amassed Hall of Fame–worthy statistics during a nineteen-year career with the Atlanta Braves, he was just a country kid from small town Pierson, Florida. A kid who grew up playing baseball in the backyard with his dad dreaming that one day he’d be a major league ballplayer.

With his trademark candor and astonishing recall, Chipper Jones tells the story of his rise to the MLB ranks and what it took to stay with one organization his entire career in an era of booming free agency. His journey begins with learning the art of switch-hitting and takes off after the Braves made him the number one overall pick in the 1990 draft, setting him on course to become the linchpin of their lineup at the height of their fourteen-straight division-title run.

Ballplayer takes readers into the clubhouse of the Braves’ extraordinary dynasty, from the climax of the World Series championship in 1995 to the last-gasp division win by the 2005 “Baby Braves”; all the while sharing pitch-by-pitch dissections of clashes at the plate with some of the all-time great starters, such as Clemens and Johnson, as well as closers such as Wagner and Papelbon. He delves into his relationships with Bobby Cox and his famous Braves brothersMaddux, Glavine, Smoltz, among them—and opponents from Cal Ripken Jr. to Barry Bonds. The National League MVP also opens up about his overnight rise to superstardom and the personal pitfalls that came with fame; his spirited rivalry with the New York Mets; his reflections on baseball in the modern era—outrageous money, steroids, and alland his special last season in 2012.

Ballplayer immerses us in the best of baseball, as if we’re sitting next to Chipper in the dugout on an endless spring day.

Cork Dork: A Wine-Fueled Adventure Among the Obsessive Sommeliers, Big Bottle Hunters, and Rogue Scientists Who Taught Me to Live for Taste by Bianca Bosker (Author)

“A marvelous journey through the mad, manic, seductive subculture of wine and wine lovers.” –Susan Orlean

“The Kitchen Confidential of wine.” –Madeline Puckette, WineFolly.com

“I loved this book.” -Mary Roach

Professional journalist and amateur drinker Bianca Bosker didn’t know much about wine—until she discovered an alternate universe where taste reigns supreme, a world of elite sommeliers who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of flavor. Astounded by their fervor and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, she set out to uncover what drove their obsession, and whether she, too, could become a “cork dork.”

With boundless curiousity, humor, and a healthy dose of skepticism, Bosker takes the reader inside underground tasting groups, exclusive New York City restaurants, California mass-market wine factories, and even a neuroscientist’s fMRI machine as she attempts to answer the most nagging question of all: What’s the big deal about wine? What she learns will change the way you drink wine–and, perhaps, the way you live–forever.

Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy by Sheryl Sandberg (Author), Adam Grant (Author)

From Facebook’s COO and Wharton’s top-rated professor, the #1 New York Times best-selling authors of Lean In and Originals: a powerful, inspiring, and practical book about building resilience and moving forward after life’s inevitable setbacks.

After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. “I was in ‘the void,’” she writes, “a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe.” Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

Option B combines Sheryl’s personal insights with Adam’s eye-opening research on finding strength in the face of adversity. Beginning with the gut-wrenching moment when she finds her husband, Dave Goldberg, collapsed on a gym floor, Sheryl opens up her heart—and her journal—to describe the acute grief and isolation she felt in the wake of his death. But Option B goes beyond Sheryl’s loss to explore how a broad range of people have overcome hardships including illness, job loss, sexual assault, natural disasters, and the violence of war. Their stories reveal the capacity of the human spirit to persevere . . . and to rediscover joy.

Resilience comes from deep within us and from support outside us. Even after the most devastating events, it is possible to grow by finding deeper meaning and gaining greater appreciation in our lives. Option B illuminates how to help others in crisis, develop compassion for ourselves, raise strong children, and create resilient families, communities, and workplaces. Many of these lessons can be applied to everyday struggles, allowing us to brave whatever lies ahead. Two weeks after losing her husband, Sheryl was preparing for a father-child activity. “I want Dave,” she cried. Her friend replied, “Option A is not available,” and then promised to help her make the most of Option B.
We all live some form of Option B. This book will help us all make the most of it.

Teammate: My Journey in Baseball and a World Series for the Ages by David Ross (Author), Theo Epstein (Foreword)

Foreword by Theo Epstein

An inspiring memoir from David Ross, the veteran catcher dubbed “Grandpa Rossy,” who became the heart and soul of the Chicago Cubs 2016 World Series championship team.

In 2016 the Cubs snapped a 108-year curse, winning the World Series in a history-making, seven-game series against the Cleveland Indians. Of the many storylines to Chicago’s fairytale season, one stood out: the late-career renaissance of David Ross, the 39-year-old catcher who had played back-up for 13 of his 15 pro seasons.

Beyond Ross’s remarkably strong play, he became the ultimate positive force in the Cubs locker room, mentoring and motivating his fellow players, some of them nearly twenty years his junior. Thanks to Cubs Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, “Grandpa Rossy” became a social media sensation. No one, however, could have predicted that Ross’s home run in his final career at bat would help seal the Cubs championship.

Now, in Teammate, Ross shares the inspiring story of his life in baseball, framed by the events of that unforgettable November night.

Change of Seasons: A Memoir by John Oates (Author), Chris Epting (Author)

Includes an exclusive EP as a companion to the book!

John Oates was born at the perfect time, paralleling the birth of rock ‘n roll. Raised in a small Pennsylvania town, he was exposed to folk, blues, soul, and R&B. Meeting and teaming up with Daryl Hall in the late 1960s, they developed a style of music that was uniquely their own but never abandoned their roots. John uncovers the grit and struggle it took to secure a recording contract with the legendary Atlantic Records and chronicles the artistic twists and turns that resulted in a DJ discovering an obscure album track that would become their first hit record. This is not your typical rock and roll story. John was focused creating great music. Along the way he achieved incredible success, battling the ever-changing pop music landscape and coming to terms with complex managerial, business, and personal challenges.

Daryl Hall and John Oates have over 20 albums together, more than 60 million records sold, and 29 Top 40 hits. Relying on his many hand-written journals, he brings to light many fascinating stories spanning his entire life with a journalist’s eye and a poet’s heart.

In Change of Seasons, John shares his highs, lows, triumphs, and failures. He takes the reader on a wild ride through all the eras, personalities and music that has shaped him into what he is.

An Outlaw and a Lady: A Memoir of Music, Life with Waylon, and the Faith that Brought Me Home by Jessi Colter (Author)

Renowned songwriter, singer, and wife of Waylon Jennings writes an intimate, enormously entertaining memoir of American music, of life with Waylon and the Outlaws, and of faith lost and found.

The daughter of a Pentecostal evangelist and a race-car driver, Jessi Colter played piano and sang in church before leaving Arizona to tour with rock-n-roll pioneer Duane Eddy, whom she married. Colter became a successful recording artist, appearing on American Bandstand and befriending stars such as the Everly Brothers and Chet Atkins, while her songs were recorded by Nancy Sinatra, Dottie West, and others. Her marriage to Eddy didn’t last, however, and in 1969 she married the electrifying Waylon Jennings. Together, they made their home in Nashville which, in the 1970s, was ground zero for roots music, drawing Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silverstein, and others to the Nashville Sound. And Jessi was at the center of it all, the only woman on the landmark Wanted: The Outlaws album, therecord that launched the Outlaw Country genre and was the first country album to go platinum. She also tasted personal commercial success with the #1-single “I’m Not Lisa.”

But offstage, life was a challenge, as Waylon pursued his addictions and battled his demons. Having drifted from the church as a young woman, Jessi returned to her faith and found in it a source of strength in the turmoil of living with Waylon. In the 1980s, Waylon helped launch the super group The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and the hits kept rolling, as did Waylon’s reckless living. Amid it all, Jessi faithfully prayed for her husband until finally, at Thanksgiving 2001, Waylon found Jesus, just months before he died.

An Outlaw and a Lady is a powerful story of American music, of love in the midst of heartache, and of faith that sustains.

Papi: My Story by David Ortiz (Author), Michael Holley (Author)

An entertaining, unfiltered memoir by one of the game’s greatest, most clutch sluggers and beloved personalities

David “Big Papi” Ortiz is a baseball icon and one of the most popular figures ever to play the game.  As a key part of the Boston Red Sox for 14 years, David has helped the team win 3 World Series, bringing back a storied franchise from “never wins” to “always wins.” He helped them upend the doubts, the naysayers, the nonbelievers and captured the imagination of millions of fans along the way, as he launched balls into the stands again, and again, and again.  He made Boston and the Red Sox his home, his place of work, and his legacy. As he put it: This is our f*&#ing city.

Now, looking back at the end of his legendary career, Ortiz opens up fully for the first time about his last two decades in the game. Unhindered by political correctness, Ortiz talks colorfully about his journey, from his poor upbringing in the Dominican Republic to when the expansion Florida Marlins passed up a chance to sign him due to what was essentially tennis elbow. He recalls his days in Peoria, Arizona, his first time in the United States; tense exchanges with Twins manager Tom Kelly in Minnesota; and his arrival in Boston. Readers go behind the scenes for the many milestones of his Red Sox career— from the huge disappointment of the Red Sox losing to the Yankees in 2003, ending the curse in 2004 with the infamous “band of idiots,” including his extraordinary clutch hitting to overcome a 3-0 series deficit against the Yankees, to earning a second title in 2007 and a third in 2013.  Along the way, he was tainted by the infamous banned substances list in 2009; he used his passion and place to fortify a city devastated by the Boston Marathon bombings; and he dominated pitchers right up through his retirement season at age 40.  Papi, as he became so affectionately called, gave his fans big hits when they needed them most. He was an even bigger presence:  He was a champion who rallied a team, a city, and a sport in a way that no one will ever forget.

In Papi, his ultimate memoir, Ortiz opens up as never before about his life in baseball and about the problems he sees in Major League Baseball, about former teammates, opponents, coaches, and executives, and about the weight of expectation whenever he stepped up to the plate. The result is a revelatory, fly-on-the wall story of a career by a player with a lot to say at the end of his time in the game, a game to which he gave so much and which gave so much to him.

Having it all is a fantasy, right?

Arm Candy (Hot City Nights Book 3) by Patricia Ryan is Seductive #romance #bookreview

Arm Candy

Title: Arm Candy (Hot City Nights Book 3)

Author: Patricia Ryan

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

David Waite, a wealthy British fundraiser in New York City, knows exactly how to please a woman, but he’s had enough of social climbers and users. His solution? “Arm candy,” a beautiful woman to accompany him as his regular date. She’s to serve as a dazzling accessory, not a prostitute or call girl, with no strings attached, either emotional or sexual. Then he sees Nora, and he finds himself overwhelmed with a craving for sweets…

Nora Armstrong is a wholesome, virginal beauty fresh from the Midwest. Her cousin asks her to go out with David Waite as a favor to advance his event planning business. She can’t say no, any more than she can say no when David asks for a second date, and a third… According to “arm candy” rules, she should be safe… until David decides to break the rules. Suddenly Nora realizes it’s a risky business, being this smoking hot Brit’s faux girlfriend… and falling in love.

Arm Candy is part of the Hot City Nights series of steamy romances with urban settings, but it can be read independently of the rest of the series. It is a full-length novel with no cliffhanger!

My Review:

David Waite, tired of dealing with Manhattan Social Climbers, decides to call in a favor from an event planner vying for his attention. David needs some “arm candy” for a fundraiser and Harlan (event planner) says he has the perfect woman for the job: his cousin, Nora.

Nora left behind her small town in the Midwest for the Big Apple. She has a talent for jewelry making and she’s determined to be successful. After spending hours on a train and beyond exhausted, she discovers what her cousin has arranged for her. She only agrees because it’s to help her cousin and his career … but the more “dates” she goes on with David, the more she cares for him. Even when sexual misunderstandings erupt between them and she gets attacked in Central Park, she can’t deny her feelings for David. Will she come clean and confess everything or will he forever keep her at arms length?

I’m a sucker for a small-town girl trying to make it in the big city romance and Arm Candy delivers that and more. Midwest Nora is the complete opposite of Brit David and yet brings out the best and worst in him. She challenges him in ways he’s never been challenged. He thinks her innocence is just an act but when he discovers it isn’t, she brings out his protective nature.

If I had to describe Arm Candy in one word, it would be: seductive. David and Nora lit my e-reader on fire with their attraction and secret trysts. The author weaves a tale of romance, lust, innocence and secret desires while giving an unexpected depth to the characters.

This was my first book by Patricia Ryan but let me tell you, it’s only the beginning. She’s a talented writer and I can’t wait to dive into another one of her books.

The End is Coming… Raven’s Rise by @LincolnjCole #UrbanFantasy #Horror #TuesdayBookBlog

Raven's Rise - kindle cover

Title: Raven’s Rise

Author: Lincoln Cole

Genre: Horror/Urban Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Everything has come crashing down after the events of Raven’s Fall: barely anyone is left standing and the Church is blaming Abigail for the fallout.

Haatim and Dominick are struggling to understand how their worlds were flipped upside down so completely, but they are running out of time. The threat that began in the mountains is far from over. They need to find a way to survive what comes next and put a stop to the cult that is threatening their existence before it is too late.

Excerpt:

As soon as Matt Eicholt stepped inside his quiet little church in the center of Phnom Penh, something felt terribly wrong. The lights remained off, just as he expected, but he could feel the presence of someone else hiding in the room.

The mere fact that they hid from him filled him with concern. He couldn’t see anyone but could tell they hid there.

“Hello?” he called out in Khmer. “Who’s there?”

No response. He tried English as well, but still, no answer came. Probably kids hiding away from their mothers. He’d experienced situations like this many times in the past, finding children avoiding their schoolwork or chores, though not usually this late in the day.

No doubt, they hid from him as well, hoping he wouldn’t return them to their angry parents.

However, something about the situation made him worry, and even though wayward children seemed the likeliest scenario, something told him that this case differed.

Matt walked across the hardwood floor toward the front of the church and to the light switch. Wary and uncomfortable, he felt unsure what might be afoot but also afraid he would miss his dinner appointment.

He used the light spilling in through the open doorway to navigate between the wooden pews toward the front, keeping his eyes open for any trespassers.

He made it to the far side of the room and felt around for the switch. It took a few seconds for his fingers to find it in the darkness, and then he flicked it on.

Nothing happened. The room remained dark.

Suddenly, the door behind him swung closed with a crash, casting him into complete darkness.

A shiver danced across his spine, and he backed up against the wall, willing his eyes to adjust to the darkness. Someone stood inside the room with him, and a tinge of panic rushed through his body.

“Who’s there?” he asked in Khmer. “Come out where I can see you.”

“Why would I do that?” a woman asked in English from across the room. She sounded young, with a sultry voice.

“Who are you? Why are you in my church?”

“Maybe I came here looking for God.”

She sounded closer this time as if she’d moved across the room toward him. He listened but couldn’t hear any footsteps tapping across the wooden floor.

“He does hide in the most unexpected places,” the woman said.

“What do you want?”

“I want you, Matthew. You have no idea how much you mean to me.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you. You make the last piece of my puzzle. The light at the end of my tunnel. Matthew. I like your name. So Biblical.”

He backed away slowly, one hand on the wall. He aimed to move away from the approaching voice and head for a door at the back of the cathedral. One he kept locked normally, and that exited into a back alleyway.

His eyes still hadn’t adjusted to the darkness, and he bumped into a pew while he scrambled through the church, knocking it sideways to scrape across the floor.

“Where do you think you’re going?” she asked, a few steps to his left. “Our fun has only just begun.”

“Stay away from me.”

“I couldn’t stay apart from you any more than a moth can from a flame.”

Suddenly, the door to the church blasted open, pouring bright sunlight in once more. A wretched-looking woman stood in front of him, maybe two meters away. She appeared of Indian descent, though pale. Pockmarks and rashes covering her skin and face gave her a sickly appearance.

The woman turned toward the door and let out a laugh when the light came in.

“I wondered when you would show up.”

Matt glanced over. Another person stood the doorway. This one silhouetted by the sunlight, which made it impossible to make out the features or see the face.

“Matt, run!” the person in the doorway—a woman—yelled.

The newcomer’s arm flew up, and a thunderous roar of gunshots filled his tiny church. On reflex, he covered his ears and stumbled backward, trying to get away from the sound.

He glanced back at the first woman, the scarred and sickly one. She dodged back and shifted behind one of the pillars that held up the roof. Gunshots thudded into the area around her.

The woman moved with unnatural speed, gliding as much as moving. Matt watched her in awe, not even sure if she qualified as human. More rounds blasted into the church. They buried into the pillar behind which she hid, shattering off huge wooden fragments that went flying through the air.

She turned, looked at him, and let out a hissing sound.

“Run, Matt!” the newcomer screamed from the open doorway before firing off more rounds at the Indian woman. “Get out of here!”

Matt ran.

Book Blurb:

Bishop Nigel smiled at me. ‘Holy water doesn’t harm vampires. Which is just as well, as it would make it impossible to baptise them.’

When I was asked by a dragon to give him the last rites, I never dreamed it would lead to negotiating with his cannibalistic family or running from snail sharks. Life as the priest of a small English village is quite tame in comparison. At least I have Morey, a gryphon with sarcasm management issues, to help me. And if all else fails, there’s always red wine and single malt whisky.

As if my life weren’t complicated enough, a darkly beautiful dragon named Raven keeps appearing where I least expect him, I’ve met a handsome police inspector who loves science fiction as much as I do, and my younger brother is getting into trouble for trying to pick up vampires.

That’s what happens when you’re dealing with an incredible and dangerous parallel world full of mythical creatures. And I have to learn to navigate it all without losing myself, or my brother…

My Review:

One of the most imaginative and unique fantasy books I’ve read in a long time.

Reverend Penny White is a priest in a small English village. Life as a priest is far from exciting, or so Penny thought. On her way home, she sees a car accident and ends up giving last rites to a very large dragon hidden in the shadows. Yes, a dragon. A chance encounter that changes Penny’s life forever.

Now, she’s dealing with adjusting to an alternative world (located ironically in Wales) and all of its paranormal inhabitants. Watching Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn’t prepare her for this. Working full-time as a priest and part-time in Lloegyr, helping when needed. But when she meets Raven, brother to the dragon she gave last rites to, sparks fly in the most unusual way. Will Penny give into her feelings for Raven while keeping up with the two worlds she’s straddling or will she reject it all for the quiet village priest existence she craves?

In order to give this book justice, I must share the thoughts I had when reading:

“Wow, the worldbuilding is so superb, so descriptive, I want to live there and brush up on my Welsh.”

“The dialogue is classic British cosy fiction with modern cultural references (Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, twerking, Sherlock Holmes, etc.) and told from Penny’s viewpoint. BBC, if you’re reading this, pick up the rights to this literary series right away so millions of us can watch this on the telly. Oops, my British accent got the better of me.”

“The slow-burning attraction between Penny and Raven was addictive. I had to keep reading to find out what happened next.”

“Penny’s relationship with her associate, Morey (named after Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes), made me laugh out loud. He’s a riot and when he disappears, it’s Penny (and a lovable snail shark) who restores him to his sarcastic self.”

“Penny White is not your pious priest; she’s human like all of us and it’s her humanity that is at the heart of this story.”

If you’re a fan of fantasy with doses of humor, please don’t hesitate and pick up this book. You’ll be swept away by the mythical creatures (including dragons), humorous dialogue, adventure and one priest who’s always been intrigued by dragons. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author in the hopes I’d review it.

Author Biography:

Priest by day, writer at odd times of the day and night, I live with a small green parrot called Tilly because the upkeep for a dragon is beyond my current budget. Plus I’m responsible for making good any flame damage to church property. I love ‘Doctor Who’, landscape photography, single malt whisky, and my job, in no particular order. When I’m not looking after a small parish church in the Midlands (England) I like to go on far flung adventures to places like Peru, New Zealand, and North Korea.

Sacrificial Lam by Gary Guinn @gmguinn is a Gripping #Thriller! #entertowin #TWRP

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Title: Sacrificial Lam

Author: Gary Guinn

Genre: Mainstream Mystery/Thriller

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Book Blurb:

When English professor Lam Corso receives a death threat at work, he laughs it off.  A liberal activist at a small Southern conservative college, he’s used to stirring up controversy on campus.  It’s just part of the give and take of life.  Even when violently attacked, Lam is convinced it must be a mistake.  He can’t imagine anyone who would want to kill him for his beliefs.

When his home is broken into and his wife’s business vandalized, Lam is forced to face the truth. His wife—a passionate anti-gun crusader—is outraged when Lam brings a gun into the house for protection. The police can’t find a single lead. Left to their own devices, Lam and Susan are forced to examine their marriage, faith, and values in the face of a carefully targeted attack from an assailant spurred into action by his own set of beliefs.

What will it cost to survive?

Excerpt:

Lying at an odd angle to the road, he opened his eyes and gasped for breath. The sky was clear, the air crisp, the grass damp. His bike lay a few feet to the right of his outstretched hand, the handlebar slightly askew.

When he picked himself up off the ground, his left knee was tender where it had struck the handlebar as he went over, and his shoulder hurt where the car mirror hit him. But otherwise he had no apparent injuries. He’d be sore the next day from landing and rolling, but a rush of relief rolled over him. The damn kid could have killed him driving like that. He picked up his bike and examined it. The only real damage was a dislodged rear brake cable. He was damn lucky. It could have been much worse.

As he straddled his front tire and struggled to straighten the handlebar, the envelope jutted from the pocket of his jacket. The hair stood on his neck, and he turned and searched the empty street in the direction the car had gone. Nothing. It was a stupid idea. It was just a dumb high school kid, who probably wet his pants when he ran Lam off the road. It had to be a high school kid. But the words of the note came to him—THE JUDGMENT IS DEATH.

Meet Iris Sweetwater @irisissweet1 and Sizzling Texas Roze #romance #amreading

Iris Sweetwater

Today, it’s our absolute pleasure to introduce you to Iris Sweetwater. She’s a romance/fantasy/paranormal author and a fun person, too. We met via Twitter and MRS N can’t wait to read her latest release, Texas Roze. She agreed to sit down with MRS N for an interview and we think you’ll agree when we say you should check out her writing. So please give a warm welcome to Iris. Take it away, Iris:

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you?

It is very hard to choose. I think you know that as an author, I am also a book lover. I have read so many. I am going to stick to three in particular, though I think I won’t be the only one using these. 🙂

  • JK Rowling: Obviously, she has the ultimate career, and I can’t say I wouldn’t want that. However, there is much more about her that inspires me. I had to write a paper about her for school about 12 years ago, and I found out so amazing things. She was at the lowest of lows as a single mother who had nothing when she first started writing Harry Potter, and it took a long time to get recognized and get a book deal. She went through a lot of struggles and still came out in top, and she is a nice and brilliant person.

  • Jane Austen: This is the ultimate woman in writing romance. Even though her settings speak of a time I didn’t live in, I feel a lot of her themes are still relevant today. And let’s face it, her male characters are the best to base any man you write about on.

  • Holly Black: She is not afraid to be unique in life and in her writing. I can also tell that a lot of research goes into her writing. She sticks to the lore.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

I think names mean everything, especially when the setting is at a certain point in time. I think sound is great, but sometimes meaning is quite important. It’s funny that you ask this because I am actually holding a poll for readers to choose the names of my main characters in my next book. I like seeing everyone else’s opinion.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

It’s probably ridiculous, but I see myself in a house I bought with my family, maybe another child or two we adopted. And I see myself with several books published and well known-maybe even a movie deal in the works. * crosses fingers *

Have you always liked to write?

Yes, I have actually been writing since I was 4. We joke about it all the time now, but I liked it so much that instead of doing boring journal prompts in kindergarten I would get in trouble for making up crazy stories about my grandfather being murdered or something!

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I have a lot in the works for this year, but the next two that I have coming out are a part of two series. One is a stand alone romance where all the books will have the same setting. They are short and steamy, just the way some of my readers like it. The other is the first in an epic dystopian trilogy called Desert Runners. It pulls from things like Mad Max and Divergent and adds in some unique twists all its own.

If you were a super hero, what would your name be? What costume would you wear?

It would be Baby Doll. That was a nickname I was given when I was in high school. I’d like to think I’d have something similar to a Sailor Scout and look that good, but that might be another nerdy pipe dream 😉 .

What literary character is most like you?

I used to think it was Bella form Twilight, though I am not that adverse to rain and snow or to shopping. Now that I have read the Celestra series by Addison Moore, I think I found a better candidate; Skyla. She is the main character, and I swear it’s like reading my own feelings and thoughts.

Do you have any scars? What are they from?

I have my lovely C-section scar.

What do you dream? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?

I have a LOT of strange dreams and nightmares, in particular. A lot of them revolve around being eaten by a monster or bitten by a snake. However, I have a few dreams that star one man, in particular, I’ve always wanted to talk to a dream expert about. It’s always set in modern times, yet the man’s chasing me, trying to find me to kill me. He looks like he just stepped out of the wild west. He had a handle bar mustache, a duster, and even the right kind of gun. I am always trying to escape him, and he always finds me.

Texas Roze

Title: Texas Roze

Author: Iris Sweetwater

Genre: Contemporary Romance (with some steamy scenes)

Book Blurb:

Roze had everything a 23-year-old girl should want; a great relationship with her zany mother, an amazing career where she got to meet some of the world’s top celebrities, a high-rise apartment in L.A., and a hot boyfriend. But Roze was bored with being the girl everyone was jealous of, and her opportunity to try her hand at being someone else came with the phone call from a lawyer telling her that her father had passed away; the father she had stopped visiting for some reason after she turned 12. He had left her his ranch in Texas to share ownership with her step brother who she hardly knew.

So, Roze did what any other woman would do in her predicament; pack up her life in the city and head to the ranch to find herself. Though, along the way, she may find a man…. or two, as well as the father she didn’t get the time to know.

Excerpt:

“I don’t know a lot about farming or animals, I have no problem admitting to that, but I do know some about business. I think we’re running a bad business right now.” Roze glanced sideways at Jake who leaned back in his seat looking amused while covering his smiling mouth.

“What makes you say that?” Todd asked, sitting up in his seat to pay closer attention now. Even if it was anger that got his attention, at least he would listen now.

“It doesn’t matter if you think we’ll have the money to afford more workers because we have to have them in order for this place to operate at its optimum level. If we lose animals or crops because we only have three people, and one is inexperienced, then there’s no point in worrying about profit – we will go under. We’ll disgrace Dad’s name.” She felt more confident now, holding her head high.

Todd looked like he was mulling it over while scrutinizing her new-found voice as Jake slapped his hand on the table with a chuckle. “Damn, she schooled you,” Jake joked, nudging Todd in a teasing manner. Todd didn’t look like he was in the mood. In fact, he was dangerously quiet for far too long. So, it shocked Roze to the core when he finally responded.

“I’ll call back two of the old workers tomorrow and see if they’ll take a temporarily reduced salary. I’ll also give you access to Dad’s office in the morning so you can take a look at the business side of things. In the meantime, I need you to pick two things that you want to work on every day until you become an expert. I am not going to be the only owner that works this land.” Todd narrowed his eyes at her as if he were her father giving an order, and even though he wasn’t of his blood, she could see his mannerisms in Todd now.

“Thank you,” she told him, nodding and then turning on her heel. She still needed a shower, and she didn’t want to outwear her welcome when she just made a big, important demand of Todd.

Heading back into her room, she realized that perhaps a bath would do her more good after the long day of work and went about gathering a towel and a robe for afterward. Then, she turned on the water to fill the large garden tub that had replaced the claw foot that had been in there when she was younger. She was noticing updates all over the house that had been an attempt to modernize it since she got there, and though she appreciated the ability to relax in the bathtub, she kind of missed the traditional piece of plumbing.

Just as she turned off the water and sprinkled some bath salts into the pool of liquid, a light knock came at her door. Roze looked at it in curiosity for a moment before going to it, wondering what either of the two men in the house would want with her.

When she opened it, she found Jake standing there, looking sheepish for the first time since she had met him. He had since put a shirt on, and in his hand, he held a makeshift bouquet of yellow and purple wildflowers. He’d obviously picked them outside.

“Hi,” he said with a goofy grin on his face. Roze realized that he was nervous about something.

“Are those for me?” she asked, pointing at the wildflowers in his strong hands.

Jake nodded.

“I know they aren’t much to look at compared to what you can get at a city shop, but it’s what I had.” Jake leaned into the doorway, and Roze leaned over to smell the flowers. They smelled beautiful and brought back instant memories of her childhood.

“They’re perfect,” she told him. “Did you want to come in and talk or something? Hang out?”

“Nah, I don’t want to keep you. I just wanted to come by and see you before I went back home and tell you that you were pretty kick ass down there.” They both laughed at that, and Roze began to feel like she might have an ally there after all. “I also kind of wanted to know if you would let me take you on a date this weekend. You know, now that you’ll have some of the workload off you.”

Roze was taken aback for a moment, not expecting Jake to ask her on a formal date. There was nothing holding her back since she had pretty much broke it off with her boyfriend back in L.A., but she hadn’t expected something so formal so quickly. Though, she found that she wanted to say yes.

“Sure, though I have no idea where we might go in such a small town.”

“Oh, don’t you worry about that,” he told her with another of his signature winks.

#ReleaseDay — The Supernatural Pet Sitter by @DianeMoatAuthor #paranormal #kidlit #MGlit

the-supernatural-pet-sitter

Title: The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Magic Thief

Author: Diane Moat

Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Every animal can talk to you. You just have to know how to listen.

Pepper Neely is better at this than most, especially because she is in charge of pet sitting all the familiars in her neighborhood. A familiar is a pet magically linked to a witch or warlock. As a gnome, Pepper is no stranger to spells and sorcery. She also knows that, despite their special name, familiars aren’t all that different from regular animals. They get anxious when separated from their people, so Pepper uses her special gnome powers to calm them down. She watches Cranky the high-strung ferret, Frank the laid-back parrot, King Arthur the elderly tortoise, and many others.

Then, something terrible begins happening to the familiars. Someone is stealing their magic! It not only prevents Pepper from communicating with them but breaks their magical connection with their people. When King Arthur’s magic is stolen, his owner’s powers stop working too. Pepper can sense that the tortoise is very scared.

In order to protect the animal’s magic, Pepper decides to track down the culprit. With the help of her best friend, Luna, and her brother, Jax, Pepper fights to protect all of the special pets.

Excerpt:

Luna focused on the candle to her far left. Ten minutes later, the candle was still going strong. Pepper bit her lip, feeling sorry for Luna. She turned to stare at the uncooperative candle, and imagined a little wind blowing the candle out. Puff.

Suddenly, the uncooperative candle blinked out as if someone had snuffed it with their fingers.

Amazon 5 Star Review:

“Pepper Neely is a very special pet sitter because not only is she a little different in and of her own self—she’s a gnome—but the animals she’s responsible for are rather unusual, too. Most are witch’s familiars, and they’re magic. Now someone is trying to mess with them, and thirteen-year-old Pepper is on the case. This is a fun book with no rough edges for parents to worry about. The action is sweet but with many exciting twists and turns that show Pepper’s sterling qualities—and the gnome family is decent and tightly knit. Definitely something young people will enjoy and with nothing for a parent to worry about. Good story and I’m looking forward to the sequel.” –

John now stands between the terrorists and the success of their mission.

Excerpt:

Gerry and I finish our beers at the Sandbar and make a move to cross the crowds toward the front door. Before the karaoke noise starts, we agree to go to another place for some pizza. She directs something to me which I can’t understand, so I hold my hand to my ear and try hard to hear her. She looks a little upset. I signal we should wait until we get outside to talk.

She nods and I take the lead, reach back, grab her hand, and act like a bulldozer while I separate the crowd as we pass through. It becomes harder since everyone has begun to pay attention to the drunken girl singing what sounds a little like a slurred Avril Lavigne song to the karaoke machine on the stage up front.

We make it to the door and go out into the humid night. I drop Gerry’s hand and notice there are two guys walking toward us. I tell her to stay close and figure the guys will eventually make way and go into the bar. I am about to ask her what she was trying to get me to understand in the bar when I feel a rush of air behind me and hear what sounds like someone thumping a watermelon. That was the last thing on my mind when the lights of the world go out.

A Peaceful Village Torn Apart by Murder… Written In Blood by @arcarver87 #99cents #thriller

Written in Blood

Title Written In Blood

Author Alex R Carver

Genre Mystery/Thriller

Publisher ARC Books

Book Blurb –

A peaceful village torn apart by murder.

When Oakhurst’s daughters begin to turn up, brutally murdered and with accusatory words carved into their skin, the residents of the small, close-knit community are unwilling to believe that one of their own might be a killer.

Suspicion falls on the village’s newest resident, Zack Wild, attractive, charming, author of violent crime novels, and possessor of a dark history; he seems like the perfect suspect.

As the investigation continues, the evidence against Wild mounts, but is prejudice against the newcomer affecting the judgment of Sergeant Mitchell, Constable Turner thinks so; she is determined to bring the killer to justice, no matter who it is, or what she has to do.

Who will be proved right, and will they catch the killer before he can strike again?

Excerpt

“Mitchell,” he said groggily when his groping hand found the ringing phone and brought it to his ear.

“Sorry to wake you, sergeant.”

“What’s up?” Mitchell asked, recognising the voice of Constable Pritchard. “Has something happened?” He could think of no other reason for him to be called before seven a.m. on a Saturday, as the clock on the bedside cabinet told him the time was.

“There’s been a report of a body being found.”

Mitchell instantly became wide awake, though it was a moment or two before he could speak. “Did you say a body’s?” he asked when he found his voice.

“That’s right. The call came in just a few moments ago; that new guy, Wild, said he’s found the body of a girl along the river near that old watchtower. He said she’s dead – murdered.”

“Murdered!” The word escaped his lips before Mitchell could stop it and he looked quickly over at his wife, who was still asleep. “Are you sure about that?” he asked as he slipped from the bed.

“I’ve not seen the body, so I can only go on what Mr Wild said, but he sounded pretty definite about it,” Pritchard said. “I can’t imagine why he’d lie about something like that.”

“Me neither, you can never tell with some people, though, and it’s not like we know Mr Wild well enough to tell what he might do.”

“Do you think it could be Georgina Ryder?” Pritchard asked.

Mitchell went cold at that. The notion that the girl he and his officers had spent the week looking for was dead was not one he liked – the possibility that she had been murdered was worse – but he couldn’t think who else the body could be, the village had only the one missing girl as far as he was aware. “Unless you know of any other Oakhurst girls that have gone missing, I think it has to be Georgina,” he said, feeling no satisfaction at the thought of her having been found.

Pritchard hesitated for a moment and then said, “I wasn’t going to mention it ‘til you came in, I didn’t think it was important, I mean, she’s never home…”

“Are you going to get to the point?” Mitchell asked, pressing the phone to his ear with his shoulder while he struggled into his uniform.

“Mike left a note, Theresa Goulding came in last night to report Lucy missing.”

“Damn,” Mitchell swore, abandoning his efforts at getting dressed. It amazed him how quickly a situation could go from bad to worse. “Okay, here’s what I want you to do; call Doc Kelly and Mel, tell them both I’ll be by shortly to pick them up, then call the inspector. Chances are, Wild’s wrong about the girl being dead, but just in case, the inspector is going to want to know what’s going on.”

“Wouldn’t it be better to call Mike or Adrian?” Pritchard asked. “Mel’s never dealt with a dead body before, perhaps now’s probably not the best time for her first.”

“No, I want Mel, she’s got to deal with this kind of thing sooner or later. Besides, if I have to go and see the Ryders afterwards, Melissa will be more help than either Mike or Adrian. You’d better make those calls, Paul, I’ll be at Doc Kelly’s in a few minutes, tell him he’ll need his bag.”

*****

Melissa Turner looked down the bank at the rapidly moving river, and then over at her superior. It made her shudder just to think about what he wanted her to do.

“Wouldn’t we be better off going back and crossing at the bridge?” she asked. “That water looks bloody freezing. I don’t fancy going in there, and I’m sure it’s not a good idea for Doc Kelly.”

“Don’t you worry about me,” Kelly said as he settled to the ground and began rolling up his trouser legs. “I’ve never been bothered by a bit of cold water. It’s that far bank I’m concerned about, it looks a little steep for my liking.”

Mitchell looked across the river at the far bank and then at the doctor, before finally down at himself. He wasn’t as large at the waist as the doctor, but he was still far from slim; climbing the far bank was likely to be as much of a challenge for him as for the doctor, but there was nowhere better.

“It’ll be a struggle,” he admitted. “But we’ll manage. If we go back, it’ll cost us three quarters of an hour, maybe more, and there’s a deadfall on that side, near the bridge, that’s been threatening to drop for a year. I’d rather not be under it, if it finally decides to go.”

Melissa thought that a bit of a weak argument – if the tree hadn’t fallen in a year, it was unlikely to fall while they passed it. She suspected Mitchell had not even thought about crossing the river after parking at the pub, and was reluctant to correct his mistake.

“I’ll go first,” Mitchell said. “Doc, you come second, Mel, you bring up the rear. Once I’ve got to the top I can pull you up, Doc, while Mel gives you a shove from behind.”

The river at the chosen spot was only about fifteen feet wide, but it still took the three of them almost five minutes to make it to the top of the far bank. Most of that time was spent climbing the bank on the other side, which Melissa had no difficulty with, but which proved a struggle for her companions.

Halito Gianna by Becky Villareal @bvillareal is a #Kidlit Gem! #bookreview #books

halito-gianna

Title: Halito Gianna (Gianna the Great Book 2)

Author: Becky Villareal

Genre: Children’s Literature, Multiculturalism, Genealogy

Book Blurb:

Halito means hello in Choctaw but Gianna was not to find that out for a long time. This feisty young girl discovers more about her family than she ever envisioned and can’t wait to share what she has found out! Come along for the journey!

My Review:

Gianna is an energetic 4th grader who is trying to find out more about her family’s roots. She knows she first came to America from Mexico but is cautious to ask her mum for more details. But when her teacher announces there’s going to be a Halloween costume contest, Gianna screws up the courage to ask her mum about her father. Her mum shares what she knows and even offers a few clues for Gianna to follow-up on.

The next day, before Gianna can investigate her father in her school’s genealogy database, she meets a new student named Aponi. Gianna is friendly and helps Aponi on her first day of school. They get to talking and find out Aponi is Native American and speaks Choctaw. They become fast friends and by sheer coincidence, could be long-lost family.

A delightful chapter book filled with colorful cartoon illustrations which teaches children many valuable lessons: family, hardship, history, kindness, friendship, getting along with others and discovering your ancestral roots. I found myself rooting for Gianna as she tries to discover the truth about her father and what happened to him.

I highly recommend this book to both parents and children. It’s a fun way to start a conversation about where families come from and how important it is to cherish our heritage. It’s also a fantastic book about kindness and being nice to others.

I look forward to reading more from this author. She’s a talented writer and certainly knows her audience.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I’d review it.

Favorite Character: Gianna. She’s such a lovable little girl who speaks like a 4th grader speaks. With her bubbly personality, I had a smile on my face as I read. She’s a real character with an insatiable thirst for knowing more about her family and her father.

The Rainbow Clause by @Beth_Bolden #romance #sportsromance #mmromance

The Rainbow Clause
Beth Bolden
Publication date: April 3rd 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance

Heisman winner. Member of the National Championship team. NFL Rookie of the Year. Quarterback Colin O’Connor knows he’s become the ultimate romance novel cliché: all the success he’s ever dreamed of but nobody to share it with. Too bad it’s not as simple as asking out the next girl who intrigues him – because the next girl to intrigue him probably won’t be a girl at all.

Unexpectedly, the solution comes in one neat package: Nick Wheeler, lead journalist for a leading sports and pop culture blog. Hired by Colin’s team, Nick comes to Miami to shine a spotlight on the NFL’s most private quarterback.

The heat in Miami rises when Nick discovers that Colin is nothing like the hollow personality he pretends to be in interviews and he’s even hotter in person than on his Sports Illustrated cover. Nick knows this is the story of his career, and after spending his teenage years as a bullied, closeted teen, it hits very close to home. What he needs is to help Colin share his story while keeping their growing relationship from boiling over in the press, but what he wants is to tell the world.

Beth Bolden lives in Portland, Oregon with her supportive husband and their beloved cat. She wholly believes in Keeping Portland Weird, but wishes she didn’t have to make the yearly pilgrimage up to Seattle to watch her Boston Red Sox play baseball. She’s a fan of fandoms, and spends too much of her free time on tumblr.

Beth has been writing practically since she learned the alphabet. Unfortunately, her first foray into novel writing, titled Big Bear with Sparkly Earrings, wasn’t a bestseller, but hope springs eternal. She’s published two novels, The Lucky Charm and Getting Lucky, and a short story, Eye of the Storm. Her next novel, Summer Attractions, will be released in August 2016.

Mr. N’s Top 10 #Baseball Books of All Time #FridayReads #MLB #Sports

fbru-baseball-books

Welcome to this week’s Friday Book Roundup.  Mr. N here!  Spring Training is in full swing, the World Baseball Classic will be starting in a couple weeks and then baseball season. Ahhh, I love this time of year! I have been following baseball since the A’s were a Dynasty in the early 70’s and lovingly remember the Saturday afternoon game of the week.  This week, I’m offering my top 10 baseball books to get everyone ready for Opening Day!  These are from my personal library and are just a top 10 (although there might be 15 more books tied for 11).  Enjoy!

1- Why Time Begins on Opening Day by Thomas Boswell (out of print)

This is one of my favorite baseball books of all time and I read this every year! Tom Boswell weaves together a beautiful collection of the ins and outs of baseball, from the minors to the umpires. Every true baseball fan needs to own this book! ~ Mr. N’s book review on Goodreads

2- Good Enough to Dream by Roger Kahn

Roger Kahn’s first major league hit, THE BOYS OF SUMMER, was his runaway bestseller that immortalized the 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers. Now Kahn does the same for players whose moment in the sun has not yet arrived.

GOOD ENOUGH TO DREAM is the story of Kahn’s year as owner of the Class A, very minor league, Utica Blue Sox. Most of the Blue Sox never made it to the majors, but they all shared the dream that links the small child in the sandlot with the superstar who has just smacked one out of the stadium. This is a look at baseball unadorned, a game still sweet enough to lure grown men to leagues where first-class transportation was an old school bus and the infield was likely to be the consistency of thick soup. It is a funny and poignant story of one season, and one special team, that will make us hesitate before we ever call anything “bush league” again.

Praise for Roger Kahn:

“As a kid, I loved sports first and writing second, and loved everything Roger Kahn wrote. As an adult, I love writing first and sports second, and love Roger Kahn even more.” —Pulitzer Prize winner, David Maraniss

“He can epitomize a player with a single swing of the pen.” —TIME magazine

“Roger Kahn is the best baseball writer in the business.” —Stephen Jay Gould, New York Review of Books

“Kahn has the almost unfair gift of easy, graceful writing.” —BOSTON HERALD

3- Ultimate Baseball Road Trip: A Fan’s Guide to Major League Stadiums by Josh Pahigian & Kevin O’Connell

Where do I start? If you have read, devoured and lived the first edition you will go nuts with this one too! There can be no higher praise about a guidebook then ‘I don’t believe anyone should take a trip to a ballpark without first checking out this book’. The information provided is invaluable. This book tells you how to get a park, where to park a car, where to sit, where NOT to sit, what to eat and what NOT to eat – in the park and in the neighborhood. The witty and easy going style of the two authors make the book such a fun read. I had to stop constantly to share tidbits from each city’s visit with my husband. A must own and read for someone planning a road trip to a baseball park. A must own and read for someone who is a baseball fan. I personally can’t wait for the 3rd edition. A spectacular 5 star book. ~Mr. N’s Goodreads review

4- Holy Cow! by Harry Caray

Writing with Chicago Tribune sports columnist Verdi, Harry Caray recaps his decades in the booth, paying special attention to the owners he has dealt with, particularly Gussie Busch, Charley Finley and Bill Veeck. He also explains his philosophy of success in the booth, which is to think of himself primarily as a fan explaining the game to his fellow fans and pointing out players’ failures as well as strengths. In this memoir, he recalls players he has admired, beginning with his all-time favorite, Stan Musial, and including Reggie Jackson, Richie Allen, and Ryne Sandberg.

5- Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain by Marty Appel

Our captain and leader has not left us, today, tomorrow, this year, next … Our endeavors will reflect our love and admiration for him.”

—Honorary plaque to Munson in Yankee Stadium

Thurman Munson is remembered by fans as the fiercely competitive, tough, and—most of all—inspiring Yankee captain and champion from the wild Bronx Zoo years. He is also remembered for his tragic death, at age thirty-two, when the private plane he was piloting crashed in Canton, Ohio, on August 2, 1979.

Munson is the intimate biography of a complex and larger-than-life legend. Written by former Yankees public relations director Marty Appel, who worked closely with Thurman throughout his career, Munson captures the little-known details of the young man from Canton and his meteoric rise to stardom in baseball’s most storied franchise. Appel examines the tumultuous childhood that led Thurman to work feverishly to escape Canton—and also the marriage and cultural roots that continually drew him back.

Appel also opens a fascinating door on the famed Yankees of the 1970s, recounting moments and stories that have never been told before. From the clubhouse and the dugout to the front office and the owner’s box, this thoughtful baseball biography delves into the affectionately gruff captain’s relationships with friends, fans, and teammates such as Lou Piniella, Bobby Murcer, Graig Nettles, and Reggie Jackson, as well as his colorful dealings with manager Billy Martin and his surprisingly close bond with owner George Steinbrenner. Munson paints a revealing portrait of a private Yankee superstar, as well as a nostalgic and revelatory look at the culture—and amazing highs and lows—of the 1970s New York Yankees teams. More than a biography, Munson is the definitive account of a champion who has not been forgotten and of the era he helped define—written with the intimate detail available only to a true insider.

6- If at First: A Season with the Mets by Keith Hernandez (out of print)

This is a great book for the die-hard Mets fan actually for the die-hard baseball fan. For the Mets fan, a lot of inside dirt on the 1986 championship Mets team. For the baseball fan, there is a lot of fine detail of the kind of little things that go unnoticed by the casual fan, that win and lose baseball games.

7- Faithful: Two Diehard Boston Red Sox Fans Chronicle the Historic 2004 Season by Stewart O’Nan & Stephen King

A fan’s notes for the ages, Faithful grew from an email exchange last summer. Filled with the heady mix of exhilaration and frustration familiar to all Boston Red Sox fans, Stewart O’Nan fired off a note to fellow Sox fan, Stephen King, who responded with his thoughts on Pedro, Nomar, Manny, Mueller, and Theo. From the supposed Curse of the Bambino to f###in’ Bucky Dent to the recent off-season battle for Alex Rodriguez, Sox fans have seen it all since 1918…except for that elusive World Championship. Baseball history has transformed these fans into a “nation” — not to mention the most dedicated, knowledgeable fanbase on the planet. Stewart O’Nan and Stephen King, proud members of Red Sox Nation, will chronicle the 2004 baseball season from spring training to the last game of the season — the important plays, the controversial managerial decisions, the significant front office moves, and the spectacular finish (whether heartbreaking or joyous). Attending games together, keeping a running diary of observations and arguments, and occasionally evoking great or tragic events in Red Sox history. King and O’Nan will cheer on their beloved team with the eternal hope that this just might be the year. If you don’t have season ticket box seats right behind the firstbase dugout, you can’t beat Faithful.

8- Tomorrow I’ll Be Perfect by Dave Stieb (out of print)

Dave Steib is one of the best and most controversial pitchers in the American League. Tomorrow I’ll Be Perfect is his story, with his views on life in the major leagues, from pitching and hitting, winning and losing, to agents, salaries and the pressure of playing for major stakes. A must read!

9- Yaz: Baseball, the Wall, and Me by Carl Yazstrzamski

Carl writes, “For twenty-three straight seasons – from 1961 to 1983 – I wore a Red Sox Uniform. My years were really the wonder years, encompassing generations of change in the game, the people, even the country. My link went back to the 1930s and up to the 1990s: I shared a locker room with Ted Williams, with Jim Rice and Fred Lynn, with Wade Boggs…

10- The Artful Dodger by Tommy Lasorda, David Fisher (out of print)

“Cut me open and I will bleed Dodger blue.” ~ Tommy Lasorda

You think you know Tommy Lasorda? You haven’t until you’ve read this book. In Tommy’s own words, he tells you his own American success story, from pitching left-hand in the minors to becoming one of the most beloved (and hated) controversial managers in major league history. A must read for any baseball fan. ~Mrs. N’s Goodreads review

#CoverReveal: The Supernatural Pet Sitter by @DianeMoatAuthor #MG #FridayReads #fantasy

the-supernatural-pet-sitter

Title: The Supernatural Pet Sitter (#1 The Magic Thief)

Author: Diane Moat

Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Familiars don’t do well when they are separated from their witches. That was how Pepper got into the business of pet sitting.

Pepper is a 12-year-old who pet sits magical animals. When someone steals their magic, Pepper must find the thief before the thief finds her!

Excerpts:

Luna focused on the candle to her far left. Ten minutes later, the candle was still going strong. Pepper bit her lip, feeling sorry for Luna. She turned to stare at the uncooperative candle, and imagined a little wind blowing the candle out. Puff.

Suddenly, the uncooperative candle blinked out as if someone had snuffed it with their fingers.

#

Pepper reached for King Arthur, but didn’t get to pick him up. As soon as her hands touched his shell, a strange thing happened: she saw and felt something that seemed like a terrible memory. A sharp pain began in her head as a picture flashed of someone wearing a cloak with the hood pulled up.

#

Pepper wasn’t sure what she was asking. “Maybe…could I… maybe I could help?”

Witches started shaking their heads, but Maggie elbowed them all away, moving toward Pepper. “Please. Please try to help her. She liked you when she met you before.”

The Spirit Well by @cyallowitz is a #Fantasy #FridayReads Gem! #bookreview #ASMSG

the-spirit-well-cover

Title: Legends of Windemere: The Spirit Well

Author: Charles E. Yallowitz

Genre: Sword & Sorcery, Epic Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Born from the light and darkness, Dariana can no longer avoid her fate.

The final corrupted temple stands between the champions and Baron Kernaghan having their great battle. Only one problem: the Compass Key refuses to work with Dariana, who long ago wiped all memories of the Spirit Well from her mind. Now, they are forced to follow a trail of clues that Dariana’s former self left behind centuries ago. It is a path that will lead the champions into a part of their friend’s past that could tear them all apart.

Will the bonds of friendship be stronger than the call of blood?

My Review:

All is not as it appears in Windemere and the Champions are in for their greatest challenge. The final temple stands between them and the Baron. But before they get on their way, Nyx is at the receiving end of endless questions and accusations from her family concerning her relationship with her beloved. Are they married? When will they get married? Nyx’s temper flares and she returns to her lover’s arms for comfort.

The Champions band together and head to Rodillen then to the Spirit Well. The only problem is that Dariana’s memories are wiped clean (mysterious) and cannot remember where this final temple is located. When she asks the Mayor about it, she finds herself in a bind. Or is it all part of her plan?

Dariana’s father is the Baron and while she knows more than she lets on, her actions propel the Champions into a time where memories are fabricated and Luke is separated from the rest of the Champions. Is he dead? No one knows for sure. It takes the Champions working together as one to unravel the truth.

This book twisted my emotions and took me on an adventure I didn’t see coming. While Yallowitz drops clues along the way, when something big happens (won’t reveal what… you’ll have to read to find out), it was like the floor drops away. It was so shocking that I almost quit reading it. Almost. My curiosity kept me riveted to the story and the ending was even better than I could’ve hoped.

For all you fantasy romance readers out there, you’re in for a treat. Yallowitz adds the perfect blend of romance, intrigue, action and drama. I didn’t know the author was a romantic at heart. Well done!

If you’re a fan of The Two Towers, you’ll really love this book. It’s a standalone in the Windemere series with plenty of shocking twists and turns.

A must read for epic fantasy readers and if magic is more your thing, you’ll really love The Spirit Well.

“Scorching, Delicious Read” Vampire CEO: Part 3 by @erin_bedford #books #bookreview

Title: Vampire CEO: Part 3 (Vampire CEO Series)

Author: Erin Bedford

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Witches

Book Blurb:

This is part three in a three part series.

Even witch’s can bite…

With her mother sick Abigail finds herself back where she started, at the head of the New Orleans Coven. The new position and the pressure put on her by her fellow sisters is making Abigail wish for her human life and a certain vampire.

Sebastian has been quiet since she quit. No word, no note. It makes her wonder if he ever cared about her at all or if it was just her blood to begin with.

Things get heated when her coven pushes her to do more magic than she is comfortable with until she gets a distressing call from Midnight that forces her to confront Sebastian. Will she figure out her place in New Orleans or will it all end in pain?

My Review:

Of all the gin joints…

No matter how much Abigail tries to get away from Sebastian, he pops up everywhere. I guess that happens when you’re a 400-year-old vampire. Only this time, he’s setting fire to her body and nothing’s going to quench it except release.

But her relationship with Sebastian is put on the back-burner with her mother’s illness worsening. The coven asks Abigail to take her rightful place as high priestess and she can no longer run away from her destiny. Witches are convinced Abigail can heal her mother but can she? The dark voodoo power within her takes life; is there a way to reverse it? And what about Sebastian? Can a witch and vampire be together or are Abigail and Sebastian doomed?

WOW! What a fantastic completion to this series! Part 3 is sizzling hot with enough angst to keep you turning the page. Bedford rakes Abigail over the coals and it’s delicious to read Abigail’s journey from fear to acceptance. We all have a path to follow and love is never easy. The ending made my heart constrict and I’d love to read more in this paranormal world. Bedford grabs a hold of the reader and doesn’t let go!

Scorching hot romance, conflicted characters, fast-moving plot and a quick read! Pick up the full serial today and dive into the magical world of New Orleans.

Joe Morgan: A Life in #Baseball by Joe Morgan @Reds #bookreview #memoir #books

joe-morgan-baseball

Title: Joe Morgan: A Life in Baseball

Author: Joe Morgan, David Falkner

Genre: Memoir, Baseball

Book Blurb:

A leader of Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine of the 1970s, twice named the National League’s Most Valuable Player and recently elected to the Hall of Fame, second baseman Morgan is one of the outstanding players of the last half-century. Raised in a middle-class family in Texas and California, he began his career with the Houston Astros in 1965, played for the Reds from 1972 to 1979 and ended his playing days with stints in other cities. Although Morgan was admired as a team player and enjoyed the respect and affection of his colleagues, his memoirs, written with Falkner ( LT ), are not pollyanna-ish. Morgan is very specific about the people he didn’t like and is outspoken about racism, which he believes pervades the sport. The resulting book is among the most candid and interesting of its genre. Photos not seen by Publishers Weekly. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

My Review:

Joe Morgan – A Life in Baseball – an apter title never given.  This is the story of Joe Morgan’s life in baseball.

From the early days, thru the Astros, then the Big Red Machine and on through his ‘parade’ through other teams before he retired.  He finishes with a discussion about being a broadcaster and offers his thoughts on how to fix baseball circa 1992.

A fabulous read.  It really takes the reader into the clubhouse both in Houston and Cincinnati.  Some may regret that more of it isn’t centered on the Glory Days of Cincinnati but this is Joe Morgan’s story not the Big Red Machine * you can get books on that already *.  What resonates from the pages to today is the stark clarity that Morgan uses in discussing racial intolerance both in baseball and in society in general.  What is extremely sad is the instances of racist police and baseball people isn’t something we can look back on from 25 years in the future and shake our head as these issues exist today.  A solid baseball book and one that has a proud place in my baseball library.

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. I’m a big fan of fantasy, especially young adult fantasy. This genre allows me to escape the realities of my life for awhile and live amongst dragons, fairies, fantastical beasts, magical beings, etc. I went over to Amazon and found some of my favorite fantasy authors have upcoming/new releases. Here are seven books I can’t wait to read:

King’s Cage (Red Queen) by Victoria Aveyard

In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl’s spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses) by Sarah J. Maas

Looming war threatens all Feyre holds dear in the third volume of the #1 New York Times bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series.

Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin’s maneuverings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit-and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.

As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords-and hunt for allies in unexpected places.

In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around–and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries–including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

The Ship Beyond Time by Heidi Heilig

The breathtaking sequel to the acclaimed The Girl from Everywhere.

Nix has spent her whole life journeying to places both real and imagined aboard her time-traveling father’s ship. And now it’s finally time for her to take the helm. Her future lies bright before her—until she learns that she is destined to lose the one she loves.

Desperate to change her fate, Nix sails her crew to a mythical utopia to meet another Navigator who promises to teach her how to manipulate time. But everything in this utopia is constantly changing, and nothing is what it seems. Not even her relationship with Kash: best friend, thief, charmer extraordinaire.

Heidi Heilig weaves fantasy, history, and romance together to tackle questions of free will, fate, and what it means to love another person. At the center of this adventure are extraordinary, complicated, and multicultural characters who leap off the page, and an intricate, recognizable world that has no bounds. This sequel—and conclusion—to The Girl from Everywhere includes five black-and-white maps of historical and mythical locations. Fans of Rachel Hartman, Rae Carson, and Outlander will be swept away.

Frogkisser! by Garth Nix

Poor Princess Anya. Forced to live with her evil stepmother’s new husband, her evil stepstepfather. Plagued with an unfortunate ability to break curses with a magic-assisted kiss. And forced to go on the run when her stepstepfather decides to make the kingdom entirely his own.

Aided by a loyal talking dog, a boy thief trapped in the body of a newt, and some extraordinarily mischievous wizards, Anya sets off on a Quest that, if she plays it right, will ultimately free her land-and teach her a thing or two about the use of power, the effectiveness of a well-placed pucker, and the finding of friends in places both high and low.

With Frogkisser!, acclaimed bestselling author Garth Nix has conjured a fantastical tale for all ages, full of laughs and danger, surprises and delights, and an immense population of frogs. It’s 50% fairy tale, 50% fantasy, and 100% pure enjoyment from start to finish.

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

New York Times bestselling author Meagan Spooner spins a thoroughly thrilling Beauty and the Beast story for the modern age, expertly woven with spellbinding romance, intrigue, and suspense that readers won’t soon be able to forget.

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. After all, her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering its secrets. So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters out of their comfortable home among the aristocracy and back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance. The Beast.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange creature back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of magical creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin, or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

And a debut fantasy author I can’t wait to try…

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

If you want something done right….

When the ruthless Pirate King learns of a legendary treasure map hidden on an enemy ship, his daughter, Alosa, knows that there’s only one pirate for the job—herself. Leaving behind her beloved ship and crew, Alosa deliberately facilitates her own kidnapping to ensure her passage on the enemy ship. After all, who’s going to suspect a seventeen-year-old girl locked in a cell?

Then she meets the (surprisingly perceptive and unfairly attractive) first mate, Riden, who is charged with finding out all her secrets. Now it’s down to a battle of wits and will… Can Alosa find the map and escape before Riden figures out her plan?

Debut author Tricia Levenseller blends action, adventure, romance, and a little bit of magic into a thrilling YA pirate tale.

“I’m a Junkie and Can’t Get Enough” Vampire CEO Part 2 by @Erin_Bedford #paranormalromance

vampire-ceo-part-two

Title: Vampire CEO: Part 2 (Vampire CEO Series)

Author: Erin Bedford

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Witches

Book Blurb:

This is part two of a three-part series.

The witch is out of the bag now…

With a vampire boss and an overwhelming attraction to him, Abigail’s new job has become more than she can handle. The parts of herself that she thought were gone have resurfaced and now not even she knows what will happen next.

Sebastian is becoming more to her than just a boss and she has to decide will she stay with him or go? The smarter option would be to leave but when has she ever been smart?

Part three coming February 13th!

My Review:

I’m a junkie for this series. After reading book one, I went through withdrawal symptoms waiting for part two to come out. I tried to be patient but you know how it is when you become so attached to a book series, patience goes out the window. I fantasized various scenarios (some outlandish, most super-sexy) and when I finally read part two (in one sitting), Erin Bedford blew my freakin’ mind!

Part two picks up the morning after where part one leaves off. Abigail is in her apartment reliving what happened the night before. She knows she needs to tell her mother what happened before the High Priestess hears it from someone else. But she might be too late as her mother is gravely ill. Grief-stricken and not feeling up to facing her sex-on-a-stick boss, Sebastian, she calls in sick. Several HOT encounters between Sebastian (on the couch, in the office, in a darkened alleyway) only reaffirms Abigail’s decision to find another job.

Meanwhile her witchy friend, Rebecca, gets drunk and Abigail gets a call from the bartender asking for help. Even though it’s 3 am, she’s gotta go and rescue several beefy bouncers and bartenders from a single petite female who happens to be a powerful witch. (Best scene ever!) Abbie to the rescue and on her way out the door, she asks about a job at the club. A waitressing job is better than working so closely with Sebastian.

Abigail’s backsliding in part one has opened the door to the darkness inside her and she’s finding it harder and harder to resist. Sebastian feeds her desire and if she loses total control, there won’t be anything left of Abigail, much less those she loves. But when she goes to the waitressing interview, all reason leaves her.

WOW! I loved this part even more than part one. Filled with a lot more smexy interaction between Abigail and Sebastian (no, I won’t give you any spoilers), the stakes couldn’t be higher for Abigail. Her mother’s illness, Sebastian’s coolness then boiling hot behavior leaves her bewildered, not to mention giving into temptation. A witch and a vampire? What happens when he sinks his fangs into her?

Gimme more, Erin Bedford! Counting the days until part three comes out.

Favorite Character: Abigail. I understood her pain as she’s dealing with a lot. If her mother dies, will she ascend as High Priestess? Even though there’s some in the coven who despise her? And what about Sebastian and her dark fantasies about him sinking his fangs into her while they have sex? Mmm, deliciously dark and seductive.

Favorite Quote: “Then you have to keep your mouth and fangs to yourself!” she jumped up from the couch, not minding the blanket that fell to the floor.

The Beauty of the Fall by @marcellor is Profound #bookreview #books #TuesdayBookBlog

Title: The Beauty of the Fall: A Novel

Author: Rich Marcello

Genre: Literary Fiction, Fiction

Book Blurb:

A TECHNOLOGY EXECUTIVE CHARTS A HIGH-RISK, UNCONVENTIONAL PATH WHILE GRIEVING THE LOSS OF HIS SON

Dan Underlight, a divorced, workaholic technology executive, suffers lingering grief over the death of his ten-year-old son, Zack. When Dan’s longtime friend and boss fires Dan from RadioRadio, the company that he helped create, he crashes and isolates himself.

Willow, a poet and domestic violence survivor, helps Dan regain his footing. With her support, Dan ventures on a pilgrimage of sorts, visiting Fortune 500 companies to flesh out a software start-up idea. He then recruits three former RadioRadio colleagues and starts Conversationworks, a company he believes will be at the vanguard of social change.

Guided by Dan’s leadership, Conversationworks enjoys some early successes, but its existence is soon threatened on multiple fronts. Will Dan survive the ensuing corporate battles and realize the potential of his company? Or will he be defeated by his enemies and consumed by his grief?

My Review:

A book that resonated with me on a personal level a number of times.  For what was the first 25% I simply loved the book. It was wonderful and I thought it was just going to be a smooth sailing book about a guy who got knocked down but ended up happy back on his feet.  There is much more to this book than meets the eye.

The author weaves a lengthy tale about a troubled soul named Dan.  The character suffers loss after loss after loss after loss and gets about as far down as Job could before finding his path.  But I also believe there is a deeper message in this book.

This is an incredibly well written book that teaches people the desperate need for the passing of the ERA and focuses a bright spotlight on the horror that is domestic violence.  This book shows a fictional way that both of these critical issues can be helped.  if only this book could be taken as a guide for modern day America then we could have positive movement in passing the ERA and ending the blight of cowardly men who are so gutless that they raise their hand against a woman.

Personally, this book struck home with two passages.  The first trifecta of loss that Dan suffers – his divorce, the death of his son and his loss of work…When I was a very young man I lost my Father, the loss of my school year and the loss of my love.  This kind of loss isn’t easily conceived if someone hasn’t faced it personally.

Further, there was a scene where Dan defended a woman being beaten by beating the coward who beat her and at that time the woman then defended her coward boyfriend.  The same thing happened to me last century when I witnessed a man punch his girlfriend and I decked him and was then struck with a purse for ‘hurting her boyfriend’.  This gave me quite a kinship to Dan.

This is a hard read but it carries a deep and powerful message and should be read by everyone, everywhere.

Rich is a poet, a songwriter and musician, a creative writing teacher at Seven Bridges’ Writer Collaborative, and the author of three novels, The Color of Home, The Big Wide Calm, and The Beauty of the Fall. Previously, he enjoyed a successful career as a technology executive, managing several multi-billion dollar businesses for Fortune 500 companies.

The Color of Home was published in 2013 by Langdon Street Press, and melds together honest generative dialogue, poetic sensory detail, and “unforgettable characters who seem to know the complete song catalog of Lennon or Cohen.” The Big Wide Calm was published in 2014, also by Langdon Street Press. The US Review of Books stated, “Marcello’s novel has a lot going for it. Well-written, thought-provoking, and filled with flawed characters, it meets all of the basic requirements of best-of-show in the literary fiction category.” The Beauty of the Fall will be published in 2016. Faulkner Award Winner Mark Spencer commented, “Few novels are as intelligent and relevant as The Beauty of the Fall. Almost none is as eloquent, compelling, heartbreaking, and ultimately, uplifting.”

As anyone who has read Rich’s work can tell you, his books deal with life’s big questions: love, loss, creativity, community, aging, self-discovery. His novels are rich with characters and ideas, crafted by a natural storyteller, with the eye and the ear of a poet.

For Rich, writing and art making is about connection, or as he says, about making a difference to a least one other person in the world, something he has clearly achieved many times over, both as an artist, a mentor, and a teacher.

Rich lives in Massachusetts on a lake with his family and two Newfoundlands, Ani and Shaman. He is currently working on his fourth novel, The Latecomers.

Paper Love by @Aubreywynne51 is a Delightful Sweet #Romance! #bookreview

paper-love

Title: Paper Love (A Chicago Christmas Book 2)

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Holiday Fiction, Holiday Romance

Book Blurb:

Growing up in a Papua New Guinea mission, Joss Palmateer is a gentle soul with a unique view of life. Still adjusting to a new home in the U.S and the sudden loss of her mother, love is the last thing on her mind.

Sexy physical therapist, Ben Montgomery, meets his sister’s friend and the sparks fly. He takes it as a challenge when she ignores his advances, but it’s her extraordinary inner beauty that captures his heart.

With the help of a stray homing pigeon and an old origami legend, Ben sets an unwavering course of romance to win her love.

My Review:

Still grieving the loss of her mother, Joss Palmateer has no interest in going out and meeting people but her best friend, Becky, keeps asking her to come to Ben’s (Becky’s brother) Friday Single Parties. Joss mentions it on a whim before dinner to her sister (who wants to go) so they decide to attend. Once at the party, shy Joss meets Ben and the attraction is immediate. He asks her out but she politely says no. She’s still getting over the betrayal of her ex-boyfriend.

Ben Montgomery takes one look into Joss’ chocolate brown eyes and is smitten. Her no is a challenge for him and he does everything he can to win her heart, thanks to the help of a lost pigeon named Charlie. He’s charming, outgoing and it’s not until he shows an insecure part of himself that Joss lets down the walls protecting her heart.

A sweet romance from Aubrey Wynne and just what I needed after a hard week. From the moment I read the first sentence, I had warm-fuzzy thoughts fill me. See, I’m a total romantic and Paper Love is one of those feel-good romances that makes the world fade away. I loved the banter between Joss and Ben, Ben and Becky, not to mention between Ben and Charlie the Pigeon. While this is short story, the main characters were fully developed.

It was refreshing to read a romance where there wasn’t any billionaires, serious angst and so forth. This is just a sweet romance, taking place during the holiday season, with real people (like you and me) trying to figure out what they want out of life and falling in love. Brilliant! I swooned at Ben’s romantic side. I cried a little at Joss’ grief and struggling to move on past her mother’s death. The ending moved me so much I had to text my husband and tell him I love him.

1-click this book right now (and the whole series). You’re in for a treat!

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author (via Netgalley) in the hopes I’d review it.

Favorite Character: It was hard to choose between Joss and Ben, as I loved them both, but I could relate with Joss more than Ben. Her caution when it comes to love and men in general made total sense, given her previous boyfriend (jerk that he is). I found myself nodding my head in agreement with her, most of the time, and the urge to hug her at certain moments in the book was overwhelming.

Favorite Quote: “Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are…”

Friday Book Round-Up Celebrates British Detective #Mystery #Books! #FridayReads

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. Reading and spotlighting Alex R. Carver’s book reminded me of how much I love detective mysteries, specifically British detectives. I think it all started with a persnickety Belgium detective talking about “the little gray cells”. My mother had the complete Dame Agatha Christie set and I remember reading them when I was in my early teens. Needless to say, I was hooked. Throughout the years, I’ve read several British Detective mysteries and am always on the look-out for new authors to sink my teeth into. So, here are my favorite new-to-me British Detective mysteries (many of them series):

The Heiress of Linn Hagh (The Detective Lavender Mysteries Book 1) by Karen Charlton

Northumberland, 1809: A beautiful young heiress disappears from her locked bedchamber at Linn Hagh.

The local constables are baffled and the townsfolk cry ‘witchcraft’.

The heiress’s uncle summons help from Detective Lavender and his assistant, Constable Woods, who face one of their most challenging cases: The servants and local gypsies aren’t talking; Helen’s siblings are uncooperative; and the sullen local farmers are about to take the law into their own hands.

Lavender and Woods find themselves trapped in the middle of a simmering feud as they uncover a world of family secrets, intrigue and deception in their search for the missing heiress.

Taut, wry and delightful, The Heiress of Linn Hagh is a rollicking tale featuring Lavender and Woods—a double act worthy of Holmes and Watson.

A Quiet Life in the Country (A Lady Hardcastle Mystery Book 1) by T E Kinsey

Lady Emily Hardcastle is an eccentric widow with a secret past. Florence Armstrong, her maid and confidante, is an expert in martial arts. The year is 1908 and they’ve just moved from London to the country, hoping for a quiet life.

But it is not long before Lady Hardcastle is forced out of her self-imposed retirement. There’s a dead body in the woods, and the police are on the wrong scent. Lady Hardcastle makes some enquiries of her own, and it seems she knows a surprising amount about crime investigation…

As Lady Hardcastle and Flo delve deeper into rural rivalries and resentment, they uncover a web of intrigue that extends far beyond the village. With almost no one free from suspicion, they can be certain of only one fact: there is no such thing as a quiet life in the country.

The Case Of The Tattooed Buttocks: An Inspector Cullot Mystery (Inspector Cullot Mystery Series Book 1) by Alan Hardy

A DETECTIVE/MURDER MYSTERY LIKE NO OTHER…

Following the murder of a sexy, blonde bombshell (and, soon after, the bloody, gruesome, shocking murder of yet another sexy broad), ex-Inspector Cullot is called in to team up with his old side-kick, Detective Sergeant Watkins, to investigate the baffling crime. Together they set about solving the mysterious deaths at Bounderdales, the opulent mansion of the oil magnate, Henry Barble. A small group of the rich, decadent, sophisticated and ultra-sexy are staying at the mansion. What secrets are each of them harbouring? Who are the guilty parties? And what is the dark secret from his own past which causes Cullot’s frequent moments of dark despair? Why did he leave the Police Force? Did he jump, or was he pushed? Why does he now work in a department store, in Ladies Underwear? The police constable first on the scene of the initial murder, PC Blunt, is ready to record every detail of the case, and assist his colleagues in their work. But what is his own past..? Is he as half-witted as he seems? What about gorgeous, sexy blonde bombshells, Stephanie and Gloria? And louche, limp-wristed Anthony Newhome? And Barble’s son, Oswald? And Barble’s demure, bespectacled secretary, Abigail? And ex-movie star, Janice Butler? Are they all who they say they are, or are some of them involved in a deadly game of murder and revenge? How are these murders linked to the unsolved Night-Club Hostess Murders which took place two years earlier? And, most puzzling of all, what is the meaning of the tattoos on the gorgeous buttocks of the assembled ladies? Thrill to the suspense, the heart-ache, the twists and turns, the laugh-a-minute of this hilarious, baffling mystery. Get ready to follow the roller-coaster plot, with one surprise after surprise, and scintillating word-play and sparkling dialogue between the marvellous host of characters. Will you be able to work out who did it? A detective/murder mystery like no other…

Murder In Thrall (A New Scotland Yard Mystery Book 1) by Anne Cleeland

Can London’s most elusive killer elude the keen minds of Scotland Yard’s most unlikely pair of detectives?

An Irish redhead of humble beginnings and modest means, Kathleen Doyle is the antithesis of Chief Inspector Michael Sinclair, Lord Acton, the brilliant but enigmatic lord with a knack for solving London’s most high profile homicides. When a horse trainer is found dead at a racetrack, the duo’s investigation does little to deter the killer at large. Jeopardizing the case are their colleagues at CID headquarters, whose nosing into the nature of Doyle and Acton’s after hours relationship threatens to lay bare the most classified information of all. As the murders pile up, Doyle and Acton uncover something far more sinister than they could have imagined. Now that they know too much, their partnership could be very brief indeed. . .

A Man of Some Repute (A Very English Mystery Book 1) by Elizabeth Edmondson

Truth is rarely pure and never simple…

Selchester Castle in 1953 sits quiet and near-empty, its corridors echoing with glories of the past.

Or so it seems to intelligence officer Hugo Hawksworth, wounded on a secret mission and now reluctantly assuming an altogether less perilous role at Selchester.

The Castle’s faded grandeur hides a web of secrets and scandals—the Earl has been missing for seven years, lost without a trace since the night he left his guests and walked out into a blizzard.

When a skeleton is uncovered beneath the flagstones of the Old Chapel, the police produce a suspect and declare the case closed.

Hugo is not convinced. With the help of the spirited Freya Wryton, the Earl’s niece, he is drawn back into active service, and the ancient town of Selchester is dragged into the intrigues and conspiracies of the Cold War era.

With a touch of Downton Abbey, a whisper of Agatha Christie and a nod to Le Carré, A Man of Some Repute is the first book in this delightfully classic and witty murder mystery series.

Author @denaehaggerty Takes on the Difficult Subject of Sexual Assault in Her New Release #books

dena-haggerty

Why in the world would I take on the difficult subject of sexual assault?

My book plots are often the result of a great (I hope!) opening idea, which my muse forces into my consciousness – usually at 4 a.m. She’s a kickass muse, but she can also be a bit bitchy. For example, with Life Discarded I had a very vague idea of a book about a woman who threw her life away. And then I had a vision of a woman walking away from an explosion erupting behind her (because cool heroes never look back at explosions). I worked the entire book out from that premise. Why an explosion? What could be so terrible that someone would not only walk away from her life but literally burn all her bridges in the process?

Self-Serve Murder started the same way. My muse sent me a vision – no doubt at 3 a.m. – of a woman waking up naked with a dead man in her bed having absolutely no clue how she got there and who in the world the man was. But where to go from there?

Due to a bizarre set of circumstances, I found myself wandering around the US for a few weeks in June 2016. I was supposed to be living in Istanbul with my husband at the time. Instead I was a vagabond being bombarded with news stories concerning the sentencing for a brutal rape case (People v. Turner). A man was convicted of three felony counts of sexual assault but received a mere six-month jail sentence. He only served three months. Even now, several months after the case first hit the news, I can barely read the news accounts without going into a fit of rage.

I don’t even remember making the conscious decision that the murder in Self-Serve Murder would somehow be related to rapes on college campuses. Between the opening scene implanted in my head and the continuous news coverage of the Turner case, ideas just poured out of me. But now I had a big – no, huge – problem. How do I balance the sensitivity involved with sexual assault while maintaining the light humor of my Death by Cupcake series?

Self-Serve Murder remains, despite the background theme of college rapes, a murder mystery and I’ve never had a problem with humor and death before. In fact, I was shocked when I was asked how I could combine humor with murder after writing my first murder mystery, Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem. I’m a big believer that jokes and smiles can be seamlessly combined with death. Death is, after all, just a part of life. This is perhaps the result of my (dare I say weird?) family who finds it normal to drink unseemly amounts of beer after a funeral and sometimes during the visitation itself while telling inappropriate jokes about the deceased until late in the night (or the hotel tells us to shut it down, whichever occurs first).

So, yeah, I think murder can be funny. Just ask anyone who is addicted to BBC crime series that are filled with dry humor and situations so bizarre you’ll start to wonder about those English people. But rape? There’s absolutely, positively nothing funny about this crime of extreme violence. How in the world do I handle this sensitive topic without demeaning the victims of this crime? Maybe I shouldn’t write this novel after all, I thought. I had always planned to make the Death by Cupcake series three books with the final book centered around the bakery worker, Kristie. She doesn’t need to wake up naked with a blank in her memory. I can think of something else.

Except I refused. That’s right. I refused. Between living in a country where women are considered second class citizens (trust me, when men universally refuse to shake your hand or even touch you, you feel like there is something wrong with you for having a uterus), watching news reports of the Turner case, and the extremely volatile US presidential election in which sexism became a central theme, I was convinced that rape – now more than ever – is a topic of extreme importance. It needs to be discussed – no matter how uncomfortable that is.

And so I trudged on. I researched rape on colleges and the use of the date rape drug. I tried to intersperse facts and figures throughout the novel. Luckily, Callie, one of my heroines and owner of Callie’s Cakes, is a complete nerd who likes to drop trivia whenever she’s nervous or stressed. Therefore, I was able to ‘educate’ my readers without boring them to tears. At least, I hope that’s what happened. Because knowledge is power and, although Self-Serve Murder is a fictional story, the ability to provide even a few readers with important information regarding sexual assault is all I can hope for. And that’s why I decided that I could take on the difficult subject of rape.

Book title: Self-Serve Murder

Book Series: Death by Cupcake, Book 3 – can standalone

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Humor

Published: December, 2016

Synopsis:

Book 3 in the Death by Cupcake series. Can be read as a standalone.

Kristie is kind with a capital K, so it’s quite the surprise when she wakes up next to a dead man with no recollection of the previous night. Even worse? She’s naked. Kristie may be a sweetheart out to save the world, but sticking her nose into an investigation of rapes across campus makes her the target of a murderer. Before she knows it, Kristie is smack dab in the middle of a murder investigation with her colleagues Callie and Anna. If that’s not enough to drive a sane person up the wall, a friend has decided he’s going to keep her safe whether she wants him to or not. And, oh yeah, he’s her man and that’s that.

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu. You are most welcome, but you may need to serve yourself as our barista Kristie is busy trying to save the world.

Warning: Although there are plenty of moments that will make you shake your head and laugh at the antics of the ladies of Callie’s Cakes, the subject matter – rape on college campuses – is very real and somewhat darker than your usual cozy mystery.

Excerpt:

I’m wiping down the counters when I get ambushed by Callie and Anna. Callie grabs my arm and together with Anna she pushes me into the corner furthest from the students. “What in the world of coffee beans are you guys up to now?” I cross my arms over my chest to make it perfectly clear that I’m not okay with whatever cockamamie scheme they’ve cooked up now.

Anna looks at me and smiles in an obvious but unsuccessful attempt to look innocent. “It’s just that we think it’s time we see the Youth Center where you spend all your time.”

Yeah, right. I roll my eyes at her. “You don’t really expect me to believe that you want to see the Youth Center to check out my life’s work.”

Callie bobs her head. “We’ve been meaning to go down there for ages.”

“Yeah,” Anna jumps in. “Logan always makes it sound like the first circle of hell.”

I raise an eyebrow at the troublemaking pixie. Of course, she would want to jump into the first circle of hell. “Most people try to avoid Dante’s Inferno.” I don’t know why I bother trying to dissuade her. She obviously has no fear of things ‘normal’ people avoid like gangs and violence and such. She even admits to starting to fall for Logan before she realized he was an undercover cop.

“We just need to make sure we can eliminate anyone from the Youth Center as possible suspects. You know – up close and personally – then we need to find this rapist before he strikes again. The dead guy in your bed was some kind of warning. It’s time to get to the bottom of this.” Callie makes an impassioned speech. I look down but, to my surprise, no soap box has magically appeared under her feet.

Unfortunately, Callie is right – as usual. The rapist needs to be found. And this whole thing just got personal. I might have backed off before Friday night since I wasn’t making any progress anyway and my whole knowledge of the rapes was based on rumors. But now that I’ve been roofied and found out about the ten other girls who weren’t as lucky as me? No way I’m bowing out of this investigation now.

“I thought you guys promised not to go to the Youth Center.” I make one last ditch effort to keep Callie and Anna safely away from this investigation.

“I promised to not go running around. I will definitely not be doing any running.” Anna shakes her head and points at her feet. As if those high-heeled boots would ever stop her from running head-on into turmoil.

Callie shrugs. “I never actually said the words ‘I promise’. There’s definitely some kind of loophole there.”

“Fine!” I throw my hands in the air in defeat. “We’ll head over in my car after the bakery closes this afternoon.”

The dynamic duo immediately jumps up and down before rushing back into the kitchen giggling. And I’m the young one?

Author Biography:

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage, every once in a while, to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. But being a lawyer really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out being a B&B owner wasn’t my thing either. I decided to follow the husband to Istanbul for a few years where I managed to churn out book after book. But ten years was too many to stay away from ‘home’. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.
