Excerpt

Momentarily struck dumb by his eye color, she stared back. Why hadn’t she noticed until now? Although not as light as hers or her father’s, the professor’s eyes were a startling green shade.

His hand nudged her arm. “Lacy?”

She jumped. “Oh, yes.” She slipped the tissue from the half-carved wolf. Another glance at his eyes and goose bumps riddled her arms.

He lifted the wood close to his face, using both hands as if handling a delicate hummingbird. His thumb traced the neck of the creature to the juncture of where it emerged from the wood.

When he brought the piece to his nose, closing his eyes and breathing deeply, Lacy wanted to turn away from the oddly erotic gesture.

He swallowed, opened his eyes and set the wolf back on the tissue. His attention shifted to the photograph of the chest. He touched the photo, a smile on his lips. “Where is the chest?”

The chest. Like he knew it, had seen it before. “I’m having it sent. You’ve seen it before?”

He didn’t move, stared out the window as if deep in thought. “I’d like to show you something, Lacy.”

“All right.” She waited, watching his profile.

He turned and stared into her face a moment. “You’re so very lovely. A creation full of life and passion, surpassing any art form.”

His hypnotic voice floated on the classical strains drifting from the living room. She couldn’t speak. Didn’t know what to say. She’d been lifted upon a pedestal of admiration. With any other man, she might consider his words a means to a sexual end. The professor’s intentions, however, were crystal. He admired her like a work of art.

Author Biography

Writing is my passion, but it wasn’t always that way. Convinced my destiny was to be an artist, I never took my love of writing seriously. And then one day, sometime after college, after marrying a man doing a stint in the army, and after the birth of our son, I found more satisfaction filling a blank page with words than an empty canvas with color.

FDW and I are gypsies at heart having lived in six states and two countries. Currently, we split our time between the pines of Northern Arizona, the desert of Southern Arizona, and the RV life. Wherever we roam, I spend most of my time writing stories of discovery, suspense, and the tangled relationships of life.

Phoebe shuddered and stilled.

Like the aftershocks of an earthquake, trembling overtook her body. Her knees wobbled, but Mason caught her before she collapsed.

“What’s wrong?” He hugged her briefly then brought his face even with hers. “Phoebe, tell me. Why are you shaking? What’s happened?”

“Oh my God, Mason.” She spread her hands on his chest and glanced back at the bathroom. “Tell someone to call an ambulance. Hurry!”

He took a step toward the ladies’ room, but she grabbed his shirtfront. “No!” She peered around him and shouted. “Someone call nine one one.”

Mason touched his pocket. “My cell’s in the truck.” He grabbed the shoulder of a male customer, the closest person to them. “You got a cell on you?”

The man nodded and pulled a phone from his pocket.

“Call nine one one right now. There’s been…” His face questioned her.

“Someone’s badly hurt in the bathroom. Oh hell, hurry!” She thumped her palms against his chest.

The man pulled out his cell as he raced into the ladies’ room.

Phoebe wrapped her arms around Mason, tipped her chin upward, and found the words. “It’s that

waitress, Mason. Carla.”

His expression went blank, from concern for her to no comprehension.

“There’s so much blood.” She stifled a gag, the sweet, copper penny reek still heavy in her nostrils. “Her throat.” A shudder rippled the length of her body. “I think she’s dead.”

Unreasonable irritation set his jaw tight, and he shot his partner a scowl. “She’s lying.”

“She’s convincing.” True to form, Albert spoke his mind. He’d miss him when he retired.

He let his ire go with the thought. “You don’t know her well enough.” They’d reached the landing and the door into the Great Hall.

“How well do you know Eike, Tobias?”

“I know her enough to know she’s not to be trusted. To know her aspirations—”

“I trust your gut.” His partner laid a hand on his shoulder. “It felt practiced…you’re right.” Albert opened the Great Hall door. “Let’s see if we can get the nephew to tell us something more.”

Tobias led the way, glanced along the table and into the shadows at each end, then made his way around and into the main room. He jerked to a halt. “Who the hell?” He trotted to a prone figure, face down in the middle of the hall.

Albert, huffing, drew up beside him as he squatted to get a closer look.

“It’s Bauer.” Tobias put fingertips to Bauer’s neck, but the pulse wasn’t there. His hand grazed a red silk scarf. The scarf, a faint scent, and confusion washed over him. August. She’d worn a red scarf the first time he’d seen her.

“He’s dead?”

“Very.”

Jake nodded, but all he could concentrate on were Penny’s last words before the officer appeared. When they were alone again, he threw up his hands. “What do you mean, go back to Phoenix? Why the hell would I do that? My sister’s been murdered, and I want to find out why.”

She turned her back on him, went to the open door of the bathroom, and lifted her clothes from the hook. Beneath the thin, hospital gown her spine was straight, her movements tight, as if coiled and ready to spring.

“Penny, I know how much she meant to you.” How much she meant to both of them. He wanted to hold her, share their loss. “I’m not leaving you.”

Untying the gown, she let it drop around her feet, and sidestepped out of the heap. She pulled the dark gray sweater over her head then stepped into black velvet jeans. She wouldn’t make eye contact, wouldn’t speak as she sat on the green plastic chair.

This was killing him. He needed to hold her, help her with her pain—his pain. Haltingly, he made his way to her, touched her head, and waited while she zipped her boots. “Penny.” She resisted, but he tipped her chin, forcing her to look up. “Come on, baby. You don’t have to worry about me leaving you.”

“You will.”

“No—”

“When I tell you the truth, you will.”

Fukushima and the Coming Tokyo Earthquake by Tony Smyth #BookReview #EarthScience #Japan

Fukushima

Title: Fukushima and the Coming Tokyo Earthquake: and what it will mean for a fragile world economy

Author: Tony Smyth

Genre: Earth Sciences, Earthquakes, Economics

Book Blurb:

This book tells the tale of two large earthquakes, one that took place in 2011, another imminent, both located in Japan. They will have a major impact on future use of nuclear energy, and also on over-indebted and increasingly fragile world economies.

Using Japanese sources, the book depicts the cultural patterns and assumptions, as well as absence of accountability, in the period before and after the earthquake of March 11th, 2011.

The following chapters ‘chunk up’, examining the economic and political consequences of using nuclear power. Further chapters detail the benefits and disadvantages of both nuclear and renewable energy in a world where greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere are increasingly harmful to the earth’s climate and ecosystems.

Japanese economic, bureaucratic and political power is concentrated at the head of Tōkyō Bay. Over one third of Japanese imports and exports are routed through that bay. Official complacency and a failure to adequately prepare for an earthquake there mean that such an event will have significant consequences.

A catastrophic earthquake near Tokyo will likely precipitate repatriation of overseas assets and loss of access to Japan’s hi-tech products, products vital to an interconnected world economy.

Fukushima and the coming Tokyo Earthquake looks back on recent events that have deeply affected one of world’s most advanced countries, but it also looks forward to future possibilities, where the interaction of nature’s power, changing energy sources, and human action will determine our joint futures.

Tony Smyth has lived in Tokyo for 37 years.

My Review:

This is an extraordinarily well written fact filled book.

The author provides excellent intense detail surrounding the Fukushima earthquake and the nuclear disaster aftermath.  I was always left wondering how homeless and down on their luck men were thrust into radioactive zones right after to do ‘clean up’.

This book details the quiet factor that lays under nearly every layer of Japanese Society. Organized Crime.  For any who think the ‘Mob’ is being defeated – read this book – it is alive and thriving in Japan.  The scandalous reaction of the Japanese rulers and Nuclear Energy Group to the meltdown is tied intricately to Japanese custom.

I found this book thought provoking, jarring and yet still an easy read.  The book details what happened in 2011 and what will yet happen when a big earthquake hits Tokyo (it’s about 25 years overdo).  The discussion as to what alternatives for energy the world has goes back over well trodden ground:  fossil Fuel/nuclear/renewable alternatives.  Not unlike the book I read on solar power a few years back, the issues with this discussion often are heavily weighed down with politics, money and big business.

Anyone concerned with the future of the planet in general and nuclear energy  in particular must read this great book.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author in the hopes I’d review it.

My Rating: 5 stars

Author Biography:

Tony Smyth was born in the northwest of England and grew up in Ireland. After partial completion of a Commerce Degree in Dublin, he moved to the UK where he earned a Fine Arts degree at Northumbria University in 1976. After two years doing graphic design at the local transport company, he traveled and worked in the United States, before arriving in Japan in March 1980. Apart from a few years in Europe, he has lived in Tokyo since that time.

He initially studied Japanese language in Tokyo, before switching to shiatsu and acupuncture. He then studied acupuncture in Beijing, receiving advanced level certification in 1985. He got married to Tomoko Sakamoto the following year, and in 1988 they founded a language school in Ebisu, Tokyo, which lasted 10 years, until Japans long recession became severe.

In 1998 and 1999 studied Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) in Winter Park, Colorado. He has since done other NLP study in New York and the UK, as well as a hypnotherapy course in Stratford on Avon, England. He has a NLP/hypnotherapy practice in Tokyo (hypnonlp-tokyo.weebly.com).

Over the years, Tony has taught English at many companies in the Tokyo area, including Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Honda Motor Company, Goldman Sachs, as well as government ministries. He currently teaches English to bureaucrats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He lives with his wife Tomoko in an apartment with splendid views of the south and west of Tokyo and Mount Fuji, plays the board game Go (badly), reads incessantly (mostly non-fiction), and, like many from Dublin, is a lifelong fan of Manchester United.

A second book which broadens and follows on from the themes in the final chapters of Fukushima and the coming Tokyo Earthquake is already being researched, and is intended to be a ‘companion’ book to the Fukushima/quake book.

Five things you may not know about me:

I have walked on fire several times.

I was in Tokyo when the sarin gas was released on the subways.

I am a wedding celebrant, conducting Christian weddings in polite Japanese.

I have seen a sky burial in Tibet.

In 1983, I smoked opium with a hill tribe in the forests of northern Thailand. Just two years earlier they saw their first Caucasian, and thought he was a ghost!

Meet the First Woman of the Ancient Disorder of Hell Hounds @WestonAndrew #books #darkfantasy

Gemini-lady

Mrs. N here and boy do I have a treat for you today. Courtesy of Bestselling Author Andrew Weston and Perseid Press, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to first ever woman to qualify for the Ancient Disorder of Hell Hounds. She agreed to an interview and I know you’ll fall for her like I did. (Nods) Go ahead and introduce yourself.

My name was Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d’Armont, or as I preferred, simply Charlotte Corday. I was born in 1768, in France to a minor aristocratic family and lived during the French Revolution. Like everyone else at that time, I got caught up in the fervor of politics and sympathized with the Girondin movement who were singled out for persecution by the leader of the Jacobin’s, Jean-Paul Marat. I decided to do something about that, and visited his home on the pretext of providing valuable information to help him advance his witch-hunt. Once we were alone, I stabbed and murdered him whilst he was in the bath and ended up being labeled, l’ange de l’assassinat, the assassin’s angel.

Not long after, I was sentenced to death by mob and trial, then executed by guillotine. It wasn’t until I awoke on the Undertaker’s Slab that I realized I’d been condemned to spend all eternity in hell for my sin.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

The tendency to shoot my mouth off. After I arrived in hell I found it hard to adjust. Like many people sentenced to an eternity of condemnation, I went off the rails. Unfortunately, my behavior attracted the wrong sort of attention. I had a number of ill-advised run-ins with injustice, annoyed the wrong people and was subjected to permanent disfigurement as an incentive to shut up and switch on.

One side of my face now looks like withered, dried-up parchment while the other has been enhanced to look stunningly attractive. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Undertaker thought it would be fun to join the two sides with huge great brass surgical staples. That makes smiling or any form of facial expression a whole load of fun.
To embrace the style, I now go by the pseudonym, the Lady Gemini, and use gothic makeup and Ombre lipstick to make the best of a bad situation.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Well, since my reanimation, I can control the minds and behavior of insects and small animals. Some might think that’s a pretty useless skill to have, but as you’ll see in Hell Hounds, I turn this ability to my advantage more often than not. I’m beginning to wish I could influence larger creatures, such as demons, or perhaps Dread-Locks, as they’d be pretty awesome to have at my beck and call.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Being the first ever woman to qualify for the Ancient Disorder of Hell Hounds.

Where would you most like to live?

The underworld is a topsy-turvy place full of strange and twisted reflections of the cities and countries you find topside – that’s in the land of the living to you – or in folklore. Having travelled through quite a few levels over the last few hundred years, I think I could settle down just about anywhere. New Hell, Niflheim, Juxtapose … anywhere really, as long as it’s not Perish (That’s hell’s version of Paris) as that’s where I originally met my end.

What is your most treasured possession?

The original set of knives I used to bring an end to that swine, Jean-Paul Marat. They followed me down into hell, and have been enhanced by the Bãlefire, the unliving all-pervading spirit of the underverse.

What is your favorite occupation?

I’m very fortunate to be doing it. I kill for a living.

What is your most marked characteristic?

I think my picture might give you a clue?

Gemini-lady

What do you most value in your friends?

Their unflinching loyalty. This is hell where murder and mayhem is the number one pastime. Everyone’s out to stab you in the back, but after having been ordained, the Pack sticks close together. It’s like belonging to the family I never truly had.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Janus, the god of beginnings and endings, transition and duality. He is usually depicted as having two faces, and the mythos surrounding him kinda sums up what my unlife has become since my reanimation.

What is your motto?

When I worked for myself as an assassin, I made sure my client base knew I was totally professional. Hell might be filled with the dregs of humanity, but when it came to my art, I didn’t cut corners, kill off-book, or double-cross my patrons. I had a one hundred percent record of successful executions. I think that’s one of the reasons the Reaper, took an interest in me.
Of course, now I’ve been ordained into the Ancient Disorder of Hell Hounds, I follow their creed:
I swear to do my utmost to be guided by the Laws of Lucifer, and to protect and defend the most despicable Doctrines of the Devil. I will endeavor to pursue all enemies of the state throughout the length and breadth of the Sheolspace continuum and do my damnedest to execute both them and my duty without fear of favor, or hope of reprieve, until the morning star decrees otherwise.”

Book Blurb:
Feared throughout the many circles of the underworld, Satan’s Reaper – and chief bounty hunter – Daemon Grim, is known as a true force to be reckoned with.

Having eliminated a major player in the uprising eating its way like a cancer through the underbelly of hell, Grim is stunned to discover he cannot afford to rest on his laurels, for the rebellion runs far deeper than was ever imagined. New players have emerged – denizens with uncanny abilities – who seem determined to support Chopin and Tesla’s revolutionary agenda.

Ever keen to test their mettle, the Sibitti – personified weapons of the ancient Babylonian plague god, Erra – also appear eager to capitalize on the growing unrest, and set about maneuvering events in order to place themselves in direct opposition to Grim’s investigation.

And if that was not cause for concern enough, there’s an insane angel on the loose, a creature as hell-bent on creating havoc as he is to return home.

How do Grim and his rabid pack of bounty hunters respond?

Baying for blood – doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Excerpt

Engines snarled and horns blared.

Although the rush-hour traffic was gridlocked, it didn’t prevent drivers from stamping their feet to the floor whenever the rare opportunity arose. Forced to brake harshly only moments later, they were quick to lean from windows and vent their frustrations at being caught, yet again, on one of the busiest roads in the underworld.

Stepping out into the din, the Angel Grislington seemed oblivious to the clot.

“What an ingenious form of entertainment,” he mumbled, “so simple, and yet so profoundly indicative of what latter-day hell is all about.”

In a daze, he turned back to stare at the very latest venue in this, his Things to do and places to go itinerary.

“Brilliant.”

Strolling across to the nearest bench, he shooed a flock of hell-pigeons away and laid a newspaper across the feces-coated rungs. After taking a seat, he flipped to the front inside pages of an elaborate pamphlet detailing a brief history of the origins and development of the establishment he had just left:

Based firmly on a concept devised by Marie Tussaud (nee Grosholts), “Madame Two-Swords & Terrorium” is unique amongst the infinite layers of the underverse in its approach to correctional castigation and public entertainment.
In life, Marie Tussaud learned her craft from Dr. Philippe Curtius, a Swiss physician skilled in the art of wax modeling. She came to fame during the French Revolution, where she would search through corpses to find the severed heads of executed citizens from which to make her death masks. Those masks were looked upon as revolutionary flags, and were paraded through the street of Paris on a regular basis.
Tussaud’s notoriety spread and she was invited to London to exhibit her works in the Lyceum Theatre. Because of the Napoleonic Wars, she was unable to return home, and settled in Baker Street, where she opened her first independent exhibition. Tussaud’s death masks attracted a lot of interest, and she expanded her concept to include life-sized models of celebrities and renowned characters from history, both dead and alive.

Nevertheless, as the public’s fascination with death continued to manifest. Tussaud began to concentrate on the more sinister and macabre, guaranteeing her success as a worldwide phenomenon. Following her death in 1850, His Satanic Majesty acknowledged the value of her work by graciously sponsoring the rejuvenation of her business here, in Olde London Town.
But don’t forget, this is hell after all, and we couldn’t just leave the most infamous museum ever dedicated to the damned to its own devices. Oh no . . .
Therefore, Old Nick saw fit to add a most delicious development. Not only does Madame Two-Swords incorporate the foulest of specimens from the underworld’s past, but it also houses unliving malefactors from the present day too. Yes, in a diabolical twist, our dark father has seen to it that this is the only place in all infernity where you will be able to witness live waxwork exhibits who have incurred his wrath engaging in combat to the death.
Wait!
Did we say Live. Waxwork. Exhibits?
We surely did.
Genetically altered by the Undertaker, the cells in the bodies of our fiendish fighting felons no longer metabolize energy in the way they used to. Instead, they produce lipids, marvelous little molecules that gradually turn the anatomy of our decrepit lawbreakers into wax.
Once deemed ready for combat, they are kept in refrigerated rooms where they await the dishonor of being called forth to entertain you, our most unwelcome guests.
Armed with nothing but sword and shield, and forced into the steaming jungle heat of the Terrorium, how will they fare?
Will they quickly dispatch their foes and live to fight another day, or will their timidity amidst humidity result in a slow and wilting death?
Will they prove their mettle, or will their resolve dissolve?
One thing’s for sure, if they can’t stand the heat, they won’t last long in this devil’s kitchen of an arena, where the only way out is in the bottom of a bucket.
But don’t take our word for it, come witness the debacle for yourself.

In a reflective mood, Grislington thought back on the oppressive environment of the huge, greenhouse-like bowl of the Terrorium.

“What a truly amazing experience. The contenders started to liquefy the moment they stepped inside. No wonder they were so keen to get down to business. Out of the three bouts I witnessed, the only pair foolish enough to remain overly cautious literally melted away before my eyes.

Lies, Love & Redemption by Award-Winning Author @KWilkinsauthor #historicalromance #books

liesloveredemption-med-cover

Title: Lies, Love & Redemption

Author:
 Kelli A. Wilkins

Genre:
 Historical (Western) Romance

Lies, Love & Redemption is a full-length novel set on the Nebraska prairie in 1877. It blends a steamy romance with mystery and danger.

Blurb:

Shot and left for dead, Sam Hixton stumbles into a general store on the Nebraska prairie and collapses into the arms of Cassie Wilcox.

Cassie’s world is turned upside down when the handsome stranger drops into her life. Sam is another complication she doesn’t need: her business is dying and her trouble with the townspeople is escalating. Yet she’s determined to keep the store open — no matter what the cost.

As Sam recovers from his injuries, he hides the truth about his identity and convinces Cassie to let him work in the store. He’s attracted to her and admires her independent nature but quickly realizes Cassie’s in way over her head. They fight their growing attraction, and Cassie questions whether she can trust her fragile heart to a mysterious stranger. Will he accept her once he knows about her troubled past?

Cassie resists Sam’s advances and represses her feelings until one fateful night when they give in to their fiery passion. Together, they work out a plan to save the store but find their efforts are thwarted—and their lives endangered—by the locals.

Sam’s secret returns to haunt him and pulls him away just when Cassie needs him the most. Will he regain her trust when she learns the truth? Cassie has everything invested in the store—can she save it and find true love with Sam before it’s too late?

Here’s an excerpt from Lies, Love & Redemption:

Cassie dusted off a can of apricots and restacked it on the shelf. “Why do I even bother?” she muttered as she picked up the next can.

Another week had come and gone, but her days were always the same. Get up at dawn, sweep out the store, dust off the cans, and . . . wait. Her few customers strolled in on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to buy odds and ends, but nearly everyone bought their bulk goods at the general store in Baxter. Townsfolk came here only when they wanted something quick—or on credit.

The bell above the door jangled, but she didn’t bother to turn around. “That you, Luke? You’re up early. I bet you haven’t seen this side of ten o’clock in—”

She glanced over her shoulder and shrieked. The can of apricots slipped from her hand and rolled across the floor.

A stranger covered in blood leaned against the doorjamb.

She rushed to his side. “Who are you? What happened?”

The man locked his blue eyes onto hers. “Help me.”

He held a battered leather satchel out to her. “Hide this,” he said, then collapsed forward.

Cassie caught him around the waist and eased him to the plank floor. Was he dead? She felt the side of his sweaty neck. His heart was beating, but he looked like hell. His clothes were coated in blood and dirt, and his face had a sickly white hue to it. He was lucky to be alive. Someone had shot him full of holes.

Where had he come from? Holloway was in the middle of nowhere with no railroad connection, and it wasn’t on the stagecoach line. She hadn’t heard a horse out front, and he couldn’t have walked here from Baxter, could he? That would be suicide.

Wild ideas raced through her mind as she stared down at him. Maybe he was a fugitive or a bank robber. Decent people didn’t get themselves shot for no reason. Whoever shot him could’ve been following him, looking to finish him off.

Her gaze settled on the satchel. What was in it? Money? Gold? The deed to a silver mine? Why did he want her to hide it?

Cassie brushed her hair away from her face and frowned. What the hell was she supposed to do with him? Why had he wandered into her store, of all places? The last thing she needed was a half-dead stranger complicating her life. His being here would only stir up trouble—and she already had more than she needed.

Maybe she could— With a start, she realized he hadn’t moved. She shook his bloodied left shoulder.  The man remained motionless. “Damn it to hell.” She yanked the satchel from his grip, then ran behind the counter and stuffed it in the bottom drawer. There wasn’t time to look inside and see what the stranger was hiding. Whoever he was, he needed help—fast.

Merry Christmas, Henry by @Aubreywynne51 Will Make You Believe in Love! #bookreview #ASMSG

Merry-Christmas-Henry-Generic

Title: Merry Christmas, Henry

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Short Stories, Fantasy, Holiday Fiction

Book Blurb:

A holiday fantasy short story for the romantic.

Henry, a shy and talented artist, moonlights as a security guard at a museum and loses his heart to a beautiful, melancholy woman in a painting. As his obsession grows, he finds a kindred soul who helps him in his search for happiness. On Christmas Eve, Henry dares to take a chance on love and fulfill his dream.

My Review:

Merry Christmas, Henry is a beautiful, heart-wrenching short story about the magic of love and Christmas.

Henry is a lonely artist working as a night watchman at a museum in Chicago. He’s shy, especially when it comes to women, but that doesn’t get him down. Instead of talking to a beautiful woman, he commits her image to memory and goes home to paint her in his upstairs apartment.

For the past twenty years, his heart yearns for a sad woman in a painting hanging in the museum. There’s something about her that captures his heart and no other woman can compare. He only wishes he could add some color to her dreary painting. Maybe then, she’s look his way and smile. That’s when an idea blossoms in his heart. Can he? Will he get arrested? It’s worth the risk to bring some beauty to the love of his life.

Aubrey Wynne has penned one of the best short stories I’ve ever read. It’s filled with emotion, mystery, magic and all takes place at Christmastime in a museum. Henry is someone I can relate to as he’s an artist who discovers what life is all about. Love is a core theme in this moving story. The characters are fleshed out, the plot moves quickly and Wynne grabs the reader from the beginning and doesn’t let go. The ending came too quickly because I wanted to read more. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: “His fingers itched to reach out and pull her from the painting and hold her, soothe her, give her comfort. Henry knew that if she could turn and face him, he would be looking at the most exquisite creature he’d ever seen. His hand shook as he reached out to touch the canvas.”

Blood Moon by @LiviaQuinn is Intense, Full of Action and a Must-Read! #PNR #IARTG #bookreview

BloodMoon_Medium

Title: Blood Moon from the Moonlight Magic anthology

Author: Livia Quinn

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book Blurb:

There’s a new supe in Destiny. She sauntered into the Moat of Morpheus — a redheaded violet-eyed warrior carrying a giant head-splitter of a sword and wielding it with magic. Her name was Cinder. River felt an immediate attraction as well as a lifting of the despair that had been his only companion for months. But it was short lived.

She was there to kill a dragonhunter and accused River of hiding the truth about him. Turns out, she was right. River had a secret and his own reasons for remaining quiet. If he couldn’t break free of the villain’s control, there would be devastating consequences for his family and ultimately, the Paramortals.

After his sister and the dragon sheriff go missing, River and Cinder join forces. But history has a way of coming full circle and echoes from their past bring a shattering revelation about their Paramortal family and the dragonhunter’s true identity, the full disclosure neither could have anticipated. Can they forgive the past to overcome their common enemy or will the news tear their relationship and the Paramortals apart forever?

My Review:

It’s almost Halloween and strange things are happening in Destiny. Tempe can’t seem to keep her emotions in check and you better bring your umbrella because that means storms are imminent. River is drinking away at the bar when in walks a gorgeous sword-wielding goddess looking for a dragonhunter. The gloom eating at River’s soul is lifted when Cinder’s around. Could she be the key to his redemption or has his master come calling for the last time?

Cinder is Conor’s little sister and her calling as a dragonhunter’s assassin is put in jeopardy when she falters in killing the hooded man known as Styx. She consults Conor and after consulting the Fae King and Queen, Conor goes through the portal in search of an ancient dragon druid for answers. What he discovers will shake the foundation of all the Paramortals in Destiny and beyond. Enemies must join forces in order to defeat Styx or all will be lost, including Tempe and Sheriff Jack Lang. Will they defeat Styx or is this the end of Destiny and its inhabitants?

There’s a lot going on in this book and while I wish I could share the juicy bits and jaw-dropping reveals, I won’t due to my strict NO SPOILERS policy. Let me just say that you’ve got to read this book, especially if you’re a fan of paranormal romance. Quinn does an excellent job filling in details, so it can be read as a standalone novel.

This is Livia Quinn’s best book to date for one simple reason: her ability to balance action, suspense, romance and all things paranormal while revealing only enough to keep the reader glued to the story. Brilliant and exciting. A few twists and turns caused me to gasp a few times. The ending made me cry but in a good way. A must-read and highly-recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: Cinder. I loved her passion for life and a female dragon is so sexy. She’s a bundle of sultriness, loves fiercely and is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with her enemy. Brave doesn’t even begin to describe her and I loved reading her story.

Saving Grace by Award-Winning Bestseller @Aubreywynne51 is a Must-Read! #bookreview #books

Saving-Grace-Generic

Title: Saving Grace: (Enchanted Keepsakes)

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

The ghost of the Pungo Witch meets a shattered heart.

Chloe Hicks’ life consisted of an egocentric ex-husband, a pile of bills, and an equine business in foreclosure until a fire destroys the stable and her beloved ranch horse. What little hope she has left is smashed after the marshal suspects arson. She escapes the accusing eyes of her hometown, but not the memories and melancholy.

Jackson Hahn, Virginia Beach’s local historian, has his eyes on the mysterious new woman in town. When she enters his office, he is struck by her haunting beauty and the raw pain in her eyes. Her descriptions of the odd events happening in her bungalow pique his curiosity.

The sexy historian distracts Chloe with the legend of a woman wrongly accused of witchcraft. She is drawn to the story and the similarities of events that plagued their lives. Perhaps the past can help heal the present. But danger lurks in the shadows…

The legend of the Witch of Pungo is based on a historical figure.

My Review:

After divorcing her abusive husband three years ago, Chloe vows to never let him control her, no matter what. She starts her own horse stables and with the help of her horse trainer, is on the brink of making a profit. But all that changes when her barn burns to the ground. Rumors start flying that she started the fire and she escapes for Virginia Beach to get away from it all. But when strange things start happening in her rented bungalow, she seeks the help of local historian, Jackson Hahn. Is the past repeating itself or can a legendary ghost save Chloe from making the same mistakes she did?

I’m a big fan of historical ghost stories and Wynne has a gem on her hands with Saving Grace. I loved everything about Chloe, from her love of horses to her independent spirit. The alternating POVs were a great way to tell the parallel stories of Chloe and Grace although the transitions were a hair jarring at first. While this is a short novella, Wynne weaves a fleshed-out story filled with intriguing characters, romance, suspense and a ghost story. A must read, especially if you love history.

Favorite Character/Quote: Grace. The sections telling Grace’s story were the best parts for me. I loved how strong she was and how she battled prejudice in her village. No matter what happened to her, she held her head high.

Catherine and her younger brother, John, are forced to live in poverty and just when she thinks she’ll have to send her brother off to the poorhouse before she takes up a domestic/governess position, she receives an invitation from her wealthy friend, Katie. Katie invites them both to spend Christmas with her family. Catherine sees this not only as a rescue from the doldrums of their rooms but as a fortuitous opportunity to secure her brother’s future. What she never anticipated was romance.

Catherine soon meets Katie’s brother, Viscount de Montjoy, and while he’s the most handsome man she’s ever met, she knows it can’t go further than his harmless flirtation. She has to keep her head on straight and not get distracted from her plan.

But when she’s accidentally discovered in his warm embrace, her brother steps forward and demands Montjoy marries her. What started out as a lovely holiday has turned into a nightmare the ton will never forget. Montjoy can’t possibly marry her, can he? Or is Catherine doomed to live a life or poverty?

What a touching sweet holiday romance set in the Regency era. While there is a slow-burning romance between Catherine and Montjoy, the heart and soul of A Chance at Christmas is the love between Catherine and her brother. They love each other fiercely and take care of each other. Regency society is quite cruel when it comes to disabled people and Harrison shows the prejudice accurately. The growth and acceptance between John and Montjoy made all the strife worth it. I was upset when the story ended because I wanted to keep reading. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: Catherine. I loved experiencing all that she goes through her eyes, from how society views her crippled brother to the delicious cuisine of a great house. Catherine has been given an opportunity of a lifetime and even though she thinks Katie’s brother is only flirting with her, she may be surprised when he reveals his true feelings.

Beppie_01

Author Biography:

Beppie Harrison lives on Boston’s South Shore close to the ocean in a big white New Englandish house with her husband, a lawyer daughter, and an assortment of dogs and cats. They live a somewhat trans-Atlantic lifestyle. Her husband is an English architect, and they lived in London at the beginning of their marriage, only moving to the States when they had young children. Now the children are grown, they return to old friends and familiar places as frequently as they can. In many ways, England still feels like their second home.

For Beppie, the pull from across the Atlantic comes not only from the dales of Yorkshire and the buzz of London, but from Ireland. Did it start with its literature, its green beauty, or its wonderfully garrulous people? However it happened, both England and Ireland draw her now.

Her first fiction trilogy, the Heart Trilogy, is placed primarily in Ireland during the Regency period. The Grandest Christmas, a companion novella for the holiday season, is a warm and cozy read for Christmastime. Her upcoming quartet of novels is placed again in Regency times, but, as introduced by the novella The Dowager’s Season, introduces four cousins to the excitement and romance of London’s presentations and balls.

Title: Hell Bound – Hell Hounds

Author: Andrew P. Weston

Genre: Dark Fantasy

Publisher: Perseid Press

Book Blurb:
Hell Bound

In hell, none of the condemned believes they deserve to be there. And that’s fine, so long as they’re not foolish enough to try and do anything about it. For those that do, there’s always Satan’s Reaper–and chief bounty hunter–Daemon Grim.

Feared throughout the many layers of the underverse, no one in their right mind dares to cross him.

However, when Grim discovers that someone has attempted to evade injustice, and seems hell-bent on gaining access to ancient angelic artifacts, proscribed since the time of the original rebellion in heaven, circumstances point to the fact they may be doing just that.

The question is…why?

Thus begins an investigation that leads Grim throughout the many contradictory and baffling levels of the underworld, where he unearths a conspiracy that is not only eating its way like a cancer through the highest echelons of Hellion society, but one which threatens the very stability of Satan’s rule.

How does Daemon Grim Respond?

Rest assured. It’ll be bloody, brutal, and despicably wicked.

Hell Hounds

Excerpts:

Hell Bound –

Across the street, a small crowd of mobsters had just exited an old style ale house, and Lady Gemini became much more alert. Hunkering down into a small depression created by the collapse of a major sewer tunnel, she removed a long cylindrical pipe from one of her elongated thigh-flaps, and rummaged around in her breast pocket with the other hand.

I watched her movements with professional curiosity.

She hasn’t taken her eyes off them once. Now that’s the kind of attitude I want to see.

The group comprised two boss types—one a Gomez Adams wannabe, the other a startlingly accurate representation of what you would get if you stuffed a bulldog inside human flesh; a statutory retinue of muscle-bound, knuckle-dragging, brain-dead hoods; and a hulking great lawyer dripping mucus and blood with every step. His steaming name badge gleamed dully in the twilight, and identified him as Othello.

Scanning their auras, I doubted the combined IQs of the thugs would challenge the slime Othello left in his wake, so they were obviously there to look mean, grunt in single syllables, and take a bullet for their masters.

Which is what they’ll probably be doing a few seconds from now . . .

I adjusted the sensitivity of my sweeps and glanced back and forth between the two parties. The Godfather wake was oblivious to the danger. Gemini merely studied them from her place of concealment, and slowly raised the tube to her lips.

So who’s the mark?

Gemini’s heartbeat never wavered. Nor was there any discernible peak of excitement. If anything, her esoteric presence diminished until it was next to nothing.

She’s the proverbial ice queen. Detached, focused, professional.

Without warning, the air shimmered and Gemini winked out of sight.

A chameleon mesh? This should get interes-

No sooner had she disappeared than the undulating mass of hearse flies orbiting her proximity swooped away, and descended en masse upon the unfortunate gangsters. In moments, they were twisting and turning and waving their arms so furiously it looked as if they had suddenly decided to engage in a hip-hop dance off.

Is she doing that?

Strangled curses turned the air blue as overzealous insects began to bite.

One voice cried out louder than the others.

“Ow!”

Othello slapped the side of his filthy reptilian neck. He coughed, staggered, and reached out to support himself on the nearest boss. Mr. Gomez obviously didn’t like being touched—especially by a lawyer—for he swatted Othello’s hand away as if his illustrious hellegally qualified acquaintance was infected by the plague. Seconds later, Othello’s knees gave way and he crashed to the floor, whereupon his essence started to fade almost immediately.

The rest of the entourage took one look at the dissipating mist and starburst away from the scene in terror, closely followed by an inquisitive cloud of hungry buzzing friends.

Oh, very clever. She made it look like a simple acci- Eh?

By the time I looked back, Gemini had already slithered down from the mound and was halfway toward Westmonster Causeway.

Unholy cow but she’s fast. I had never seen her run before. I wonder how long she can keep it up?

I never found out. Reaching the banks of the river, Gemini kept going—straight as a die—leaped the shattered balustrade and jumped straight into the filthy waters of the Tombs without creating so much as a splash.

Hell Hounds –

Deep beneath the streets of Olde London Town, the brick-lined galleries of the main sewers resounded with the echoes of pursuit. Water splished and filth sploshed in time to erratic footfalls, and every now and then, each resonating burst of frenzied activity was punctuated by an interlude of hacking sobs as the terrified victim tried to catch both his breath and his bearings.

The endless chain of low wattage emergency beacons dotted along the apex of the tunnels stretched off into the distance. But their wan light did little to dispel the midnight embrace leaching into every nook and cranny, and if anything, only served to define the darkness into tighter clusters.

Isabella Castile slowed her pace and judged her prey’s progress.

It had been like this for more than an hour, ever since her quarry had discovered his second wind, in fact, and a determination to fight against the seeming inevitability of his situation.

Why Isabella had chosen this particular denizen, she didn’t know. Maybe the color of his hair, the cut of his pinstripe suit, the way he turned his nose up at those around him. None of it mattered now, for once started, she would continue the hunt until she had added his name to a growing list of damned souls who found themselves, at her behest, in dread repose upon the Undertaker’s slab.

His haphazard course through the maze was a clear indicator of the Blue Suit’s panic, and the notion that he would leave his fate to happenchance only spurred Isabella to greater efforts. That, and the sour aftertaste lacing his pheromone-ridden trail.

Isabella reached the latest in a long line of junctions. Pausing just long enough to taste the ether, she quickly determined his new route and set off with a fresh spring in her step and a deepening ache in her throat.

Not long now, my sweet. Not long.

A cruel smile stole its way across her lips.

Plunk!

The betraying splash tolled like a death knell in the dark.

Halting her advance, Isabella hugged the shadows along the far wall, and sang: “Can you hear what I hear?”

Her tuneful query elicited nothing but silence.

Creeping forward, she peered around the lip of a side shaft, her fingers testing the air like spider legs on a web. “And can you see what I see?”

A knife appeared in her hand where nothing had existed before. Then it was gone, traversing the fifty-foot gap in the blink of an eye.

A grunt coughed out of the gloom. Then a stifled curse. Moments later, the filthy waters slopping about Isabella’s feet turned crimson.

She stepped out into the scant illumination offered by a meager cone of light from the ceiling and was rewarded by a sharp intake of breath.

“No, please. I’ll give you anything you want . . .” was all the Blue Suit managed to gasp before calamity fell upon him.

Excerpt:

I was on a week leave on Micea. It’s a neutral planet, completely alone. It was exactly what I wanted. My tent was pitched, and a fire was blazing. I was a short hike from the lake, perfect for fishing and swimming. I’d been there once before and loved the spot. As I put a pot of coffee on the fire, I saw the ship coming in hot. It was in trouble, and the pilot was struggling to keep it steady. I grabbed my med pack and ran to where it was going to crash.

The ship knocked over trees as it skid into the ground. The earth shook, and there was a crash when it impacted. I nearly lost my footing. It only made me run faster. Whoever it was wouldn’t have much time if the ship was heavily damaged. I was relieved to see it was a human craft when I reached the ridge; an old one, but human nonetheless. The hatch was still closed, which was a bad sign; and, the ship was on fire. I found the emergency release lever as I wrapped my hand in the corner of my shirt to protect it from the hot metal.  The hatch opened like a charm when I pulled it.

I fell on my ass when I saw an unconscious Kelsairan woman. It was a human craft. Why the hell was a Kelsairan piloting it? She groaned slightly. Kelsairans were the enemy. I should have left her. I couldn’t abandon her to die now that I knew she was alive. My honor wouldn’t allow it. I cursed the whole time I pulled her out of the wreckage. She was bleeding from a wound in her leg, and I knew my med kit would be useless. Kelsairan anatomy was different than a human’s. I cursed again as I hunted for her med kit. Luckily, she’d kept it close at hand, and I found it quickly.

I dragged her to safety just as her ship exploded. It knocked me back a step, and I instinctively covered the woman from debris. The noise had my ears ringing. The heat from the fire was unbearable. I pulled her further away until I could figure out a plan.

It was a long hike back to my camp. I bandaged her wound temporarily before making a sled to take her the rest of the way. Getting her back, unfortunately, was the easy part. I had to properly address the wound on her upper thigh once she was at my camp. Her one-piece outfit complicated everything. I needed to get to the injury, and its location made it impossible to just cut off the pant leg.

My task would have been far easier if Kelsairans didn’t look like humans, but they did. They were usually taller and leaner with opaque eyes and ridges on their brows. Everything else made them appear human. This woman was no exception, and she was undeniably attractive. She was tall and slim. Her breasts were small, yet firm; her hips were perfectly curved. She had ice-blonde hair that was slicked back. Her oblong face had high cheekbones and full lips. I was never this close to one of their women before. I never realized how beautiful they were. Well, this one was anyway.  I tried waking her first, hoping I wouldn’t have to undress her myself but she was unconscious. I considered waiting until morning, but the wound was oozing, and I was afraid of it getting infected.

I shook her one last time before reaching for the zipper at her neck. Nothing, she was out cold. Damn, I pulled the zipper down my hands shaking like I was a virgin. I tried not to look as I quickly undressed her, I put one of my own t-shirts on her, but her body was flawless. If I think about it, I can still remember it now. I draped a blanket over her torso and other leg as I worked on her wound. There was a piece of metal lodged in the wound. I had to fish around for it before disinfecting and bandaging it. She looked ridiculous in my shorts. At least she was dressed.

I didn’t want to move her again, so I brought my sleeping bag out of the tent and rolled her in. The coffee I’d started earlier was ruined now. I started a fresh pot for my night vigil. Who was this woman and why was she here? I sank into my chair watching as she slept.

A #VeteransDay Message From @LiviaQuinn + a #Kobo sale! #FridayReads #RomanticSuspense #IARTG

thumbnail_MenofHonorlogo_Medium

Happy Veterans Day to our service men and women past and present.

I can’t express what the sacrifices our military and their families make when they make the extreme commitment to enter the service mean to me and my family. Two or three days a year is not enough to properly show our support.

My Men of Honor series celebrates men and women who value integrity, honor, and duty through service to their country and communities. The heroes are former and current military, law enforcement and emergency responders and heroines are their equals in love and more.

Blurb:

His lost memories might get her killed…

You’ve killed him, Bad Brenna taunted. Brenna looked down the steps at the man lying motionless in the tropical downpour. I told you that silly phobia would get you in trouble if you didn’t get a grip.

Brenna knew she was right, knew it was exactly why Bad Brenna existed, to help her cope with the trauma that had turned her into a scared rabbit whenever lightning was in the forecast. But her anxiety over the approaching storm had been magnified by another premonition. Usually, it meant someone was about to die. Had she been the means, this time, of fulfilling her own prophecy? As always there were no clear answers. She needed to start trusting her sixth sense if she was ever going to get rid of Bad Brenna. First step— rescue her victim from the storm.

What happened? He’d been dodging the lightning, fighting the wind and rain, looking for a place to hide…when he’d seen the faint glow in the distance. There was no answer at the door so he’d broken in, entered… and there she was, a beautiful Valkyrie. Wielding her sword, she screamed as she struck him—for no good reason—and then everything went black. Everything.

Excerpt:

The next rumble of thunder surprised her with its strength. Her fingers moved faster with nervous energy as she kept her eyes glued to the monitor. Anxiety traveled along her nerves like the electrical conduits in the Electron Molecule Deformulator. The memories wouldn’t be far behind.

In that instant, a magnesium-white light turned her living room into an overexposed movie negative and she found herself on the floor, hands pressed to her eyes for agonizing seconds as a mighty trunk split, striking other trees and sending chips and limbs like missiles against the side of the house. A picture tumbled off the shelf by the fireplace and hit the floor as the house shook.

The crashing seemed to go on forever, followed by lingering thunder. Throughout the clamor and chaos, Brenna held her breath, as if merely breathing would bring calamity down on her. As if not breathing could keep the beast from finding her.

When silence reigned, she raised her head.

To black velvet darkness. “Crap.”

In the dark, the storm’s power was more terrifying, a constant barrage of light that bounced off every surface, attacking her senses and her already precarious sanity. She pushed herself off the floor and stumbled to the bedroom. With her eyes half covered with her fingers, she retrieved the one flickering candle in the ruby glass holder from the bedside table that had been her grandmother’s.

By its meager light she hurried to the kitchen, shielding the flame with her other palm. She sat the holder on the counter and rummaged through the drawers, finding garbage bag ties, wayward screws, and bottle caps, but no candles.

A loud boom coincided with another flash of light. She counted, “One thousand one, one thous… uhnn.” With the next flash and simultaneous crack of thunder she hit her elbow on the kitchen counter. “Brenna. If anyone knows this is merely a thunderstorm, you do.” Even if it was a bad one.

Right. When was the last time a thunderstorm was a mere anything to her? Brenna knew the answer. To the year, the season, the minute. The memories came at her like leaves in a microburst and she pressed her hands against her head as if to still them.

Something hit the porch and Brenna froze. With her back to the kitchen wall, she took a deep breath, repeating her therapist’s rant, er, chant. Empty your mind as you inhale. Or was it exhale? He’d given up on her after the meditation class.

The front door rattled again and her litany continued. “Nothing to fear. It’s just the wind. No sane person would be out in this weather—unless—” Her mind flashed to a horror movie commercial, and her breathing stopped.

“Quit that!” She shook her head and did a mental reset, peering around the opening to the front door. Nothing.

“See?” Feeling silly, she wiped her palms on her jeans, spread her hands out in front of her, “Steady…” but flinched at another deafening boom. The ruby glass holder hit the floor and extinguished the light. She squeezed her eyes shut and felt the wetness of hysteria on her cheeks. Once again she attempted to reset, dashed the tears away and let the other Brenna, Fearless Brenna who’d peeked her head out recently, give the fearful one a pep talk. The damn lightning’s outside. Stop this craziness and get the candles.

Nodding, she edged toward the old trunk, just as something brushed the front door. She whirled. The apparition on the other side of her front door froze her in place.

Starkly backlit by the storm’s intermittent light, was the dark shadow of a man. A menacing form, it moved back and forth like a shadow boxer. Her scream was absorbed by a loud blast of thunder as she dove to the floor, her eyes locked on the cabin’s entrance. In the flickering light the phantom’s raised arm looked like a coiled snake about to strike.

Crab-walking backwards toward the couch, she glanced around for a weapon. Her eyes locked on the fireplace implements. She seized the iron shovel and scurried toward the door, sliding down against the wall under the front window. She was close to hyperventilating. Had he seen her?

Her lungs were gripped by an invisible fist. Calm. She had to calm down or he’d be able to hear her heart pounding against her chest. Even with the storm outside, her blood thumped in her ears. Her breath came in noisy pants.

Broken glass spilled from the door’s window pane near her feet and her fingernails dug into to her palms as she gripped the iron tighter in a batter’s grip. Sliding up the wall behind the door, she flattened her body against it as more jagged pieces of glass fell to the floor. All her attention was on the hand reaching through the opening.

Unlocking the door.

Turning the handle.

Like a seasoned batter aiming for the strike zone, Brenna timed her attack. As the large figure stepped across the threshold she swung, the shovel connecting with a sickening thwack against his forehead. With a grunt, he staggered out the door and down the porch steps to lie still in the heavy downpour.

To Cast A Cliché by @Aubreywynne51 #historicalfantasy #FridayReads #bookreview

To-Cast-A-Cliche-Kindle

Title: To Cast A Cliché (A Just For SH*#$ and Giggles Short Story #2)

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Historical Fantasy, Short Story, Humor

Book Blurb:

The evil Queen Lucinda exacts revenge on a royal poet by casting a spell of never-ending clichés upon the kingdom. Will the clever King Richard thwart his stepmother’s magic and save the good people of Maxim? Test your literary knowledge and enjoy an entertaining spoof on fairy tales.

My Review:

Another hilarious book by an author who writes intelligent humor that leaves me laughing out loud at lunch with co-workers looking at me.

The curse of clichés was brilliant, and more than half the fun for the reader was trying to (successfully for me) identify which cliché was which.  Reading the King trying to interpret the behavior was a gut grabber.

Sheer comedic brilliance that would have done Monty Python proud.  I recommend this to every single person the planet!

In Hell, We Reap What You Sow — Hell Hounds by @WestonAndrew #darkfantasy #books

hellhoundsfullcover

Title: Hell Hounds

Author: Andrew P. Weston

Genre: Dark Fantasy

Publisher: Perseid Press

Excerpt

Iridessian Haunts by Amy J Hamilton @WriteNaughty is a Must-Read! #Halloween #paranormal #SFF

Iridessian Haunts 6x4

Title Iridessian Haunts

Author Amy J Hamilton

Genre Paranormal Sci-Fi

Publisher Radish Fiction

Book Blurb

Kanner, Nix and the team have been sent to a primitive planet ahead of the construction companies. Their remit is to ascertain the viability of peacefully living on Iridessia alongside the indigenous species.

Probes have already sent back favourable reports.

The probes had not met the locals.

Kanner and Nix must observe the creatures on the planet whilst dealing with dark forces their best scientists will have difficulty explaining.

Excerpt

“I suppose you want to go down those tunnels, don’t you?” Nix asked while Kanner nodded his head.

“You know the sensible thing is to get out?” Nix continued.

“Or,” Kanner began, “maybe the sensible thing is to walk down the tunnels and see if there’s some form of alien tech down there that could produce our ‘ghost’ for want of a better word.” Kanner’s voice trailed off to a mumble as he made mental lists of what to take and what they might encounter.

“What happened to ‘no inhabitants matching the intelligence of humankind’?” Nix asked.

“I feel I should say something like they were aiming really low when they sent us here.”  Kanner saw a scathing look on Nix’s face and backtracked.

“I’m joking. We’re scouting this planet with some of the best minds available.”

He was interrupted by Nix,

“I can’t see my breath.”

Kanner gave him a blank look.

“That’s what happens when there are ghosts,” Nix said, “it gets colder and you see your breath in front of you.”

“Or maybe there’s a crack somewhere in the rock and a cold draft is getting in from outside. Maybe the wind just dropped. From what we can tell it’s Iridessia’s autumn and it is most certainly getting colder at night.

As more minutes ticked past, Nix recovered.

“Let’s start on the left,” Kanner said. A brief “OK” was Nix’s only reply.

“Are you really OK with this? We can go back if you’re not sure.”

“No, let’s do it. I won’t hear the end of it back at base if I wimp out now.”

The left-hand tunnel was, as expected, pitch black. Kanner adjusted the light on his helmet to emit a wider beam into the tunnel.

“Mind, there’s an uneven step down. Nothing to see. It looks like an empty tunnel. The light isn’t penetrating very far. Watch, slippery patch,” Kanner announced as he took small steps forwards into the darkness.

“I’m at the end,” Kanner said unnecessarily as both men reached out to touch the cold, damp wall. Their contact produced a searing white light which filled the surrounding space. They yelled and tried to shield their eyes with their arms. Turning their backs on the walls they blindly made their way back along the dank, stone corridor. Their bodies bumped into each other in their haste to escape the intense light.

“Kanner, why is the tunnel longer on the way out?” Nix asked still shielding his eyes with his arm.

“I don’t know, but I was thinking the same thing. Maybe we’re almost…”

They spilt out of the tunnel and sprawled across the floor having been caught out by the natural step formation at the entrance. Darkness overcame them for a few moments as the pair groaned and complained. Kanner sat up with his knees bent and rested his arms on his legs.

“Nix, you OK?” he asked.

“Yeah,”

“We should leave,” Kanner began,

“About time,” Nix said pulling himself to his feet and reaching down to give Kanner a hand up. They turned their backs on the trio of tunnels and took a step towards the cavern between them and the tunnel to the outside world.

“Kanner,” Nix began,

“I know,” Kanner answered. They had no control as their bodies were manipulated to face the tunnels again. Both men let out a yell as they felt their bodies snatched into the air and flung into the middle tunnel. They approached the end wall at high speed and had no ability to slow themselves or shield their heads from the impending impact. Breath squeezed out of them as they stopped inches away from sudden death. They hung in mid-air incapable of speech or movement. The lights on their helmets and arms shone but had no effect on the surrounding darkness.

The lights went out.

Kanner tried to move his mouth to speak, but his jaw moved too slowly and no sound came out. He had no connection with anything. He couldn’t see or hear Nix and he couldn’t feel the tunnel on any side of him. The universe around him felt like it had been erased leaving him hanging in the absence of everything.

Kanner felt his head snap backwards and was dragged by the chest in an unknown direction. When he dropped unceremoniously onto the hard, damp floor, he realised he had been expelled from the second tunnel. He immediately looked around for Nix.

“Make. It. Stop,” Nix said through gritted teeth. He was fighting and losing the battle as his feet took him closer to the third tunnel.

Kanner tried to pull him back but again felt his body hoisted into the air. His ability to breathe disappeared. His body tried to panic, but even that function was removed. Kanner hurtled into the third tunnel and landed just behind Nix as he walked through the end wall. The lights from Kanner’s gear worked in the last tunnel. The wall at the end was some sort of transparent rock. Through it, he could see Nix surrounded by some of the more vicious creatures they had encountered on the planet. Kanner threw a hand into the wall but was stopped, bruised and scraped for his efforts. The animals closed in on Nix who appeared to be in a trance. Kanner was powerless to help. He slammed both palms on the wall he could still see through and pressed his forehead in-between them. He hoped with everything he possessed that Nix wasn’t really there and they were both unconscious somewhere rather than about to experience the fate he saw ahead of him. He closed his eyes in defeat.

The Everett Exorcism by Award-Winning @LincolnJCole #bookreview #supernatural #occult

The Everett Exorcism - kindle cover

Title: The Everett Exorcism (World of Shadows Book 1)

Author: Lincoln Cole

Genre: Supernatural, Horror, Occult

Book Blurb:

Something strange is happening in the city of Everett, Washington and Father Niccolo Paladina is tasked with investigating possible demonic activity. Nothing is as it seems, however, and things quickly begin spiraling out of his control.

When his path crosses with that of an old rival, they discover that things are worse in Everett than either of them could ever have imagined. As his world collapses around him, Niccolo will be left with one terrible question: what is my faith worth?

My Review:

When faced with absolute evil, will your disbelief save you?

Father Niccolo Paladina is sent to Everett, WA to examine the reported demonic happenings. Niccolo is a holy man and doesn’t believe in such nonsense. He’ll admit strange things are happening that he has no explanation for but demons? No. When the residents of Everett begin to act bizarrely and demon hunter Arthur Vangeest arrives, Niccolo must come to grips with the truth. Demons are real and Everett is about to feel the wrath of absolute evil. Can Niccolo and Arthur defeat the demon or is this just the beginning?

I was so excited to hear that Lincoln Cole was writing a prequel series to the World on Fire series. I’ve been fascinated by Arthur and what he was like before his venture to Hell as well as Father Niccolo Paladina while reading the World on Fire series. The Everett Exorcism doesn’t disappoint and in fact, is in many ways better than the World on Fire series.

Cole grabs the reader from the get-go with his fast-moving action, intense drama and descriptive narration. He plunges the reader in the middle of all that is going on while making sure you know what’s happening. I connected instantly with Father Niccolo. What I loved most was Cole’s gift for foreshadowing. He only reveals what you need to know at the time, thus allowing the reader to gasp a loud at certain plot twists. Brilliant!

A must read and I can’t wait to read book two!

Curva Peligrosa by @lilyionamac is a Lyrical Sexy Read! #bookreview #literaryfiction #books

Curva Peligrosa

Title: Curva Peligrosa

Author: Lily Iona MacKenzie

Genre: Literary Fiction, Women’s Fiction

Book Blurb:

When Curva Peligrosa arrives in Weed, Alberta, after a twenty-year trek on the Old North Trail from southern Mexico, she stops its residents in their tracks. With a parrot on each shoulder, a glittering gold tooth, and a wicked trigger finger, she is unlike anything they have ever seen before. Curva is ready to settle down, but are the inhabitants of Weed ready for her? Possessed of an insatiable appetite for life and love, Curva’s infectious energy galvanizes the townspeople, turning their staid world upside down with her exotic elixirs and unbridled ways. Toss in an unscrupulous americano developer and a one-eyed Blackfoot chief, stir them all together in the tumult of a tempestuous tornado, and the town of Weed will never be the same again. A lyrical account of one woman’s journey and the unexpected effects it has on the people around her, Curva Peligrosa pulses with the magic at the heart and soul of life.

My Review:

Curva Peligrosa is a magical free-spirit who embraces life to the fullest. She’s traveled the Old North Trail for the past twenty years and when she arrives in Weed, Alberta, the townsfolk are wary at first. All she wants to do is settle down but with gold teeth, sexy curves Mae West would be envious of and a wicked trigger finger, she makes an imposing impression. Yet people are drawn to her (as was I while reading), and the magic that seems to follow her. But when slick oilman Shirley tries to buy all the land rights of the townfolk (there’s oil aplenty supposedly), Curva stands up to him with the help of the same people who once called her an outsider. Will Weed, Alberta ever be the same after Curva Peligrosa?

I loved Fling! and when I heard that MacKenzie had a new release, I was ecstatic! Curva Peligrosa is filled with quirky characters, lyrical narration and a strong message of embracing all that life has to offer. Blending history with the present, MacKenzie weaves an addictive tale. I loved the supernatural parts (who wouldn’t love to make flowers bloom wherever she goes?) and while it’s steeped in fantasy, it’s believable and thus the reader can suspend their belief. The main conflict between the oilman and the small town is a familiar one in Alberta and MacKenzie sheds new light on this political issue.

Free your inhibitions and pick up this book today. You’ll fall in love with the effervescent Curva Peligrosa, just like I did!

Favorite Character/Quote: Curva. I loved everything about her and soaked up her essence. We all have a little Curva buried deep in us. We just need to unleash her.

Author Biography:

I’m devoted to following the intricacies of language and where it takes me. I’m ardent about words and what they evoke in our minds and imaginations, the worlds they create. And I’m constantly learning, a student of the writer’s craft, eager to open myself each day to the endless possibilities this calling presents. No wonder I love to write!

Writing requires exertion, the ability not to give in when we’ve received yet another rejection. Some people call this perseverance. But is that what it takes to keep writing in the face of adversity, rejection, and lack of recognition? The word sounds so duty bound, so driven. To me, a better word is discipline because at the root is disciple, though there are many lovely variations on this word that I actually prefer: student, follower, learner, devotee.

About me? A Canadian by birth, a high school dropout, and a mother at 17, in my early years, I supported myself as a stock girl in the Hudson’s Bay Company, as a long-distance operator for the former Alberta Government Telephones, and as a secretary (Bechtel Corp sponsored me into the States). I also was a cocktail waitress at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, briefly broke into the male-dominated world of the docks as a longshoreman (I was the first woman to work on the SF docks and almost got my legs broken), founded and managed a homeless shelter in Marin County, and eventually earned two Master’s degrees (one in Creative writing and one in the Humanities).

I have published reviews, interviews, short fiction, poetry, travel pieces, essays, and memoir in over 155 American and Canadian venues. My novel Fling! was published in July 2015 by Pen-L Publishing. Curva Peligrosa, another novel, will be published in September 2017. A third novel, Freefall: A Divine Comedy will be released in 2018. My poetry collection All This was published in 2011. I also taught writing at the University of San Francisco and was vice-president of USF’s part-time faculty union. When I’m not writing, I paint and travel widely with my husband. I also blog at https://lilyionamackenzie.wordpress.com .

Chronicles of the Coranydas by Award-Winning Author @Rtranbooks #epicfantasy #IARTG #SFF

We’re pleased to announce that this fantastic series has brand new covers!

the_rashade_front_new (1)

Title: The Rashade’ : Chronicles of the Coranydas Volume 1

Author: Rebecca Tran

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Book Blurb:

“I killed many more men after that, but it is his face that I will always remember.” Mara

After her father was murdered before her eyes, Mara Coranyda traded a life of privilege, for one devoted to vengeance. Shortly into her quest to find the mage that murdered him, Mara discovered it wouldn’t be an easy task to accomplish. Not only would she have to find the magical artifacts to destroy him, but she would also have to raise an army to stop his conquest of her homelands.

Excerpt:

Kailin pulled her in closer to him and stared at her with his violet eyes. It was a thrill that she instantly rebelled against. “You’re not going to let that stop you. Not when you have the opportunity to show all these people that you’re every bit as good as a man.” Kailin voiced almost the exact thoughts running through her head.

“All right, but you will look rather silly when you lose to a woman in a dress.”

“You could change.”

“No, this took entirely too long to put on.”

“I must say it was worth the effort. You look stunning.” He smiled at her as he stopped dancing and pulled her to the far end of the room. He took her through the tower and out onto a cobblestone courtyard. An elevated wooden platform sat at the far end with racks of weapons on each of its four sides. Stopping in front of one of the racks, Kailin picked up a sword and handed it to Mara. She let it fall to the ground insulted. She stepped over the sword on the ground and walked down the row of weapons until she found one that suited her. She felt its weight and tested its balance before moving to the platform.

“That’s my sword,” he said, a little surprised at her choice.

“Well, it’s much nicer than the piece of tin you handed me. May I borrow it?”

He relented as he followed her onto the platform. Kailin drew the sword at his waist and waited for Mara to make her move. She, however, was more patient than him and let him make the first move. He lunged forward and she blocked it easily with a clang of steel that hung in the cool night air. He swung and she blocked again. A guard came running to see what was going on. He watched for a moment before leaving again.

A few minutes later, two more guards arrived. They stood at the edge of the platform to watch. Mara worked Kailin back toward the edge of the platform, but he found an opening and managed to force her back. The match was already five minutes in without a single point. People continued to hurry in to watch.

“MARA!” Kess yelled. Distracted, Kailin looked up for a moment and Mara seized the opportunity. With a flick of the wrist, she disarmed Kailin sending his sword flying. In one fluid movement, she swept his leg, spun around, and caught his sword. Now on his knees before her, she stopped with both blades crossed against his throat.

The crowd hollered and cheered. Wayette, who was also caught up in the moment, began clapping. Kess, however, remained unimpressed. He saw that move countless times and knew its counter. As showy as the move was, he was no longer fooled, unlike Kailin. The crowd loved it though, and it left no doubt as to why she chose to take such a risk. She’d used this opportunity to prove a point to the noble class. From here it would filter down, beginning the reputation she so longed for.

“Do you yield?” Mara asked simply when the crowd quieted a little.

“Yes,” he relented.

“Good, my dress almost got dirty!” Mara said more than loud enough for the crowd’s benefit.

Excerpt

Crance began his attack as soon as he was free and had a sword in hand. He lunged but Kess stepped away easily. After practicing with Drake and Mara so long, their graceful movements made Crance seem like he was in a clumsy, drunken stupor. Kess wanted to end this quickly before the buffoon accidentally won. Kess could only hope their enemy fought this poorly. Crance thrust again before taking a more subtle approach. Trying to wear Kess down, he made smaller attacks aimed at his extremities and gut rather than the heart.

It wasn’t until Kess took the offense that Crance’s style changed. The clumsiness vanished for the most part and his movements became purposeful. But the grace of an Eighth Rank was still sorely absent. Kess sliced sideways but his blade was deflected. He lunged again and received a deep cut on his shoulder. Kess looked to his sleeve that was now torn and stained crimson. He swallowed a curse before focusing the energy on his technique and the opponent at hand.

Crance grinned at drawing first blood. He swung at Kess’ side forcing Crance to reach across his body to defend himself from Kess’ parry. Kess saw the opportunity and began working Crance back. If he could force another sloppy lunge, he could win the match. Kess swung down at an angle purposely leaving an opening in his defense. Crance noticed and lunged. Kess saw it coming and deflected Crance’s blade to the side. Stepping forward, he brought his sword to Crance’s throat stopping short of the fatal blow. Kess asked him to yield and Crance agreed.

Kess grabbed the man by the collar and pulled him closer. “Now that you’re done wasting my time, are you with us or not?” he asked coldly.

“I am and so are they,” Crance said, nodding toward the men behind him. “Well fought.”

Title Evil Never Dies – 1st novel in the Maxilla trilogy

Author Rick Haynes

Genre Fantasy

Book Blurb

If you like David Gemmell and Game of Thrones, you’ll love Evil Never Dies.
Here’s what reviewers have posted.

‘In style, it’s very reminiscent of David Gemmel with an easy to slip into world and plenty of excitement, balanced with some reflection.’

‘Haynes has also created a world of good and evil, darkness and light and is very Gemmell-like in the way it functions, there is no grey here, we, as the reader, know whose side we are on.’

‘Readers of David Gemmell’s works will really enjoy this novel, the flow of action and story is very similar and does not stop to take a breath. The pace is frenetic and leads the reader to more battles and action fuelled scenes.’

Excerpt

Such was the easy living that even the talk of distant unrest had failed to worry any of the inhabitants of Lakeside. Good crops gave a plentiful supply of food, local water and strong beer the necessary liquid refreshments, whilst all combined to provide a relatively carefree existence after the hellish war. Lakeside’s population needed to forget the past even though the horror still visited the minds of many. A few newcomers had been welcomed. Having lost everything in the battle, Lord Bokin had provided them with the tools for a resettlement programme. There was more than enough land to satisfy the needs of thirty-five people from seven families without upsetting the survivors.

With all his heart, Tarn wished for a quiet and peaceful life for his family and friends; sometimes he even believed it would be possible.

The door crashed open and Wynne made his usual entrance, remembering at the last moment to duck his head under the wooden beam. Long braided hair dangled over his shoulders and a locket hung around his wide neck. Scratching his thick beard and dressed in a soft leather jacket, linen trousers and long boots, he looked like a pirate from the southern oceans that Tarn had once met on his travels. Only the wide-brimmed hat was missing. Tarn tried to imagine Wynne on a ship but no matter how hard he tried the two did not seem compatible.

Wynne ignored the finger on lips and sleeping child.

“Get up. War is coming!”

Heroes Never Fade

Title Heroes Never Fade – 2nd novel in the Maxilla trilogy

Author Rick Haynes

Genre Fantasy

Book Blurb

Shadows are spreading across the vast land of Cpin, as once more the gods are playing with the lives of man. Only a tidal wave of heroes’ blood stands in the way of the Tormented King, but will that be enough to prevent the slaughter?

If you like fantasy in the style of Game of Thrones, you’ll really love, Heroes Never Fade, the follow up to Evil Never Dies.

Take a peek at this from an Amazon top 500 reviewer.

‘I may be shot down by some of the great David Gemmell’s fans, but many times Heroes Never Fade reminded me of him as you can feel the influence. Though Mr. Haynes has his own style, I hasten to add.’
‘In my humble opinion, Rick Haynes is a fantastic epic fantasy writer (pun intended). It is not easy to create new worlds, new plots without encroaching on the established big names like JRR Tolkien, Gemmell and Brooks.’

And read this from another reviewer.

‘Prepare for a nerve-tingling ride through a fantasy world of medieval warfare, a world that springs to life under the skilled pen of an author who has thoroughly researched his subject. The characters are full-blooded, their relationships to each other clearly drawn. The warriors leap off the page, wielding their weapons with skill and courage as their battle of right against might is mirrored by a power struggle between their gods.’

Excerpt

Sword battles raged inside the gate, initially in the small area between the burnt wood and the mound of rocks. Tarn wanted to pick his father up and hug him for suggesting the idea, for the Grey Wyots were making slow headway as they scrambled over the debris. The archers had licked their lips as the first volley flew, punching the Grey Wyots off their feet, blocking the way for those following. Notch, loose and swoosh, the last of the arrows had found their targets. The bowmen stepped back to stand behind the swordsmen for now it would be knife work at close quarters.

Tarn and Grona fought alongside each other, their blades running red with gore. Grona constantly blinked to keep out the blood from the gash above his left eye. Tarn fought like one possessed, charging forward against the Wyots trying desperately to avoid his mighty broadsword. Yet weight of numbers began to push them back. A Wyot fell heavily, losing his sword. Seeing Tarn’s exposed back, he slashed out with his dagger and scored through the leather jacket. Wynne cursed, rushed in and ferociously cut through the tendons and bone on the Wyot’s arm. Tarn nodded to his friend; the gash was not a mortal wound but he realised that already his strength was on the wane.

Individual battles broke out inside the fort. Hallvard and Svanna fought side my side, their sabres ringing the dance of death but sheer numbers bore them down. Tarn wanted to come to their aid but many fighters pushed him back. His men were fighting like demons, yet he could see the insidious malaise of despair creeping over them. Will any of us live to see our homes again? he pondered.

Those following the Grey Wyots had to pull bodies from under the gate to join the fight in and around the courtyard, eager to earn the bounty promised by King Jarl. For the man who brought the head of Tarn or Grona to the mad king would receive a chest of gold.

Now surrounded, Tarn and his men awaited the final onslaught.

“Good job the lunatic forgot his archers. I might live longer,” Terryn said.

“Another joke like that and I’ll kill you myself,” Grona retorted.

A Grey Wyot officer stepped forward, his expression grim. “Do you surrender?”

“Bollocks!” came Grona’s reply.

The men from Marathi licked their lips in anticipation and advanced.

King Jarl’s war horn blew.

The Longest Night by Horror Legend J. N. Williamson #bookreview #horror #supernatural

the longest night

Title: The Longest Night

Author: J. N. Williamson

Genre: Horror, Paranormal

Book Blurb:

The ladies of the evening will never see the dawn! More than half a century ago, the women died, victims of a crazed and hideous killer. But even in death they found no rest, for night after night they die again. And now the horror grows, as death reaches out to claim new victims and fresh blood…

My Review:

What a spectacular ghost story this book is.

You take a ‘typical’ American family who is down on their luck and then they find opportunity in another city in a house with a ‘history’.  The ghosts who haunt the home are 99% victims and just want to find the light and 1 is evil and doing evil even in death.  The moral of the story is how the bad in the family empowers the evil to more power.  In the end, the truth sets everyone free.

Scary, well written, gripping, touching and absorbing.  A 5-star ghost story by one of the greatest supernatural authors of all time.  My all time fave horror writer who lives on after his passing in his fantastic books.

Title: Angelica (The Detective Mike Eiser Series Book 2)

Author: Clabe Polk

Genre: Mystery, Suspense

Book Blurb:

A long time ago, Angelica Vicetti did some very bad things with some very bad men. Now she’s built a new life for her family, far from Las Vegas.

Now it’s all about to come crashing down.

Angelica Vicetti of Las Vegas has become Angela Cassetta of Poplar Bluffs, just outside Atlanta, Georgia. She’s built a successful real estate agency, and the son she rescued from Vegas when he was a youngster is now a high school baseball star and destined for great things.

But the mob bosses in Vegas who forced her underground haven’t forgotten about her. A string of hit men come to town to kill her, but each time she saves herself and her son, with the help of her friends and Mike Eiser, a local Sheriff’s detective who has seen far worse.

Then things get even more complicated, when one of the hit men changes his mind and becomes strangely important to Angela in a whole new way… and a team of Federal agents come to town and ratchet up the odds. Suddenly, sleepy little Poplar Bluffs is awash in blood.

Angelica will have to take it all the way to the edge and beyond – into murder, kidnapping, and lying to the Feds – to save herself and her son. But… can she survive the fight for her family’s freedom?

My Review:

Wow.  A MUST READ. What a fantastic story this is.

I have to say that a small town like Poplar Bluffs faces the most crime a small town has seen since Jessica Fletcher lived in Cabot Cove.

I loved the story of Angelica and her family and just LOVED how every group of bads moved in, tried something and were dealt with in superb fashion.  The growing relationship between Danny and Angela was beautiful.

The best line of the book has to be, ‘What happens in the kitchen, stays in the kitchen.’

It became so funny how every type of bad guy/cop/etc. ended up eating at Bertie’s.

A fantastic book that I loved every second of and am sorry it ended because I can’t wait to read it again.

If you are only going to read one Detective Eiser book, make it this one. It is the greatest and a fun read.

I would give it 1,000,000 stars but must settle for 5+

You Dear, Sweet Man by Thomas Neviaser is a Riveting Must-Read! #bookreview #paranormal #fantasy

You Dear Sweet Man

Title: You Dear, Sweet Man

Author: Thomas Neviaser

Genre: Fantasy, Magical Realism, Fiction

Book Blurb:

The subway ad is enticing. One might even consider it elegant as well. A beautiful woman, sitting atop a desk in a sparsely decorated office, staring directly at Bobby Fastow, a blue-collar worker, on his way to his monotonous yet physically exhausting job. The photograph has an unusual charisma, a spectacular presence. It seemingly leaps off and out of the poster.
Bobby Fastow intensely absorbs the information directed at him. BurgerBlast, his favorite fast food restaurant, famous for quick service and reliable, if not artery-choking fare, is announcing a new name and a new direction.
But, in the world of advertising, nothing is as it seems. What if the line that separates an advertisement from the real world were erased? What if an image stepped from an ad and beckoned you to follow it back, inviting you to melt into its world. Could you resist? Bobby Fastow couldn’t, and his decision would turn his world upside down.

My Review:

In the cutthroat world of fast food, owners/board of directors will do anything to stand out, even so far as to blur the lines between fantasy and reality.

Bobby Fastow is an ordinary guy working a dull blue-collar job. He takes the subway to and from work. Something catches his eye so he glances up to see his favorite fast food joint’s latest ad. He’s drawn to the woman in the ad and it seems like she’s staring at him, beckoning him towards her. It’s just an ad, right? Bobby thinks he’s going crazy or maybe he’s working too hard. But everything changes when the woman in the ad steps out and coaxes Bobby into her world. His one decision will alter his world forever because like that old rock song says, you can enter but you can never, ever leave.

What an imaginative, original story! I’ve never read anything like this before and I love that. We’re all a little bit like Bobby, living our normal life while unconsciously being manipulated by marketing and advertising. All hail the slick mad men of today… or not. While the themes are clearly presented, there’s a few underlying ones that make you think about the device-driven world we live in today.

You Dear, Sweet Man by Thomas Neviaser has a diverse bunch of characters and while it might be difficult to follow them all, Neviaser plunges the reader into the psyche of each character without much effort. The character arcs were intriguing plus a few twists and turns I didn’t expect make this a must read. Bobby and Charlie were opposite ends of the spectrum yet their motives behind their actions made this book all the more addictive. A terrific read and thanks to Neviaser, I will never look at ads the same way.

Favorite Character/Quote: Bobby. I really connected with him as a character. From his blue-collar job to how he responds to all that happens to him, it all combines for a riveting experience.

Excerpt

I look down at my drink and wonder what will happen tomorrow. My daughter Constance wants to come and visit. She lives in New York, and before all hell broke loose, we didn’t see each other often. I missed her so much, and it seemed as if I had to beg her even to talk on the phone. Now, it’s like she wants to be here every weekend. It’s only an hour’s flight by the shuttle or three by train, so she can come when she wants. I just can’t figure out why she got so clingy. I have my troubles, but it doesn’t have anything to do with her. No use in asking her husband either. Though a nice enough guy, I always wonder if he has someplace important to go when I visit. He never sits still and stays busy on the phone or at the computer. He makes a good living, but it seems a person could take an hour to sit and talk. I’d looked forward to some kind of relationship when he and Constance got married. It’ll never happen with him.

When I take another pull at my drink, I notice the burn feels less. It happens every time. First sip initiation, I call it. It’s like the first puff of a cigarette, hits hard then, after, nothing. I decide to let Constance pretty much have the agenda tomorrow. She and I have not had a chance to talk about anything deep for a while. It could just be that she blames me for her mother running off with that guy with the house on the Hudson. He has a title, and the old gal couldn’t resist, but I think the daughter always felt I should have done something. Her mother’s sleeping with another guy and what the hell can I do about that?

I’ll just go with the flow. If she wants to go out, we will. If she wants to stay in, we can do that too. I better think about getting some food in the house. Of course, we can always order take out. I need to move on to my drink and let this go. Tomorrow will be what it is. I remember the day she was born. I looked down at her in my arms and promised I would do anything for her. I love her more than life itself, and I hope we can somehow get to the root of whatever’s wrong. She sounded strange on the phone this morning, and I feel helpless to do anything about it. I hope she opens up when she gets here.

For some reason, I feel tired. Perhaps I’ll go ahead and finish my drink. Maybe I’ll just go home and forget the burger. First, though, I’ll just shut my eyes for a minute. My hands feel good when I put my head down.

“Hey, Greg,” Jerry says. I barely hear him. “What’s the matter? You taking a nap? Greg?” I can feel him shake me, but I have no interest in waking up. His voice gets further away, and I think he says, “Oh, my God, Sophie, call 911, quick.” Now the room goes silent.
