Friday Book Round-Up Rustles Up 12 Deals on #Books! #FridayReads #amreading #99cents

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. Spring is here and I’m itching for some good books to read. We just paid our taxes so money is tight. So, off I went to Amazon see what I could find in their deals section. Everything from Fiction to Romance to Mystery were on sale so here are the ones I recommend (and downloaded):

The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen ($1.50)

In an idyllic small-town neighborhood, a near tragedy triggers a series of dark revelations.

From the outside, Sycamore Glen, North Carolina, might look like the perfect all-American neighborhood. But behind the white picket fences lies a web of secrets that reach from house to house.

Up and down the streets, neighbors quietly bear the weight of their own pasts—until an accident at the community pool upsets the delicate equilibrium. And when tragic circumstances compel a woman to return to Sycamore Glen after years of self-imposed banishment, the tangle of the neighbors’ intertwined lives begins to unravel.

During the course of a sweltering summer, long-buried secrets are revealed, and the neighbors learn that it’s impossible to really know those closest to us. But is it impossible to love and forgive them?

Heirs of Grace by Tim Pratt ($1.50)

Recent art school graduate Bekah thought she’d hit the jackpot: an unknown relative died, and she inherited a small fortune and a huge house in the mountains of North Carolina.

Trey Howard, the lawyer who handled the estate, is a handsome man in his twenties and they hit it off right away—and soon become more than friends. Bekah expected a pleasant year to get her head together and have a romantic fling. Problem is, the house is full of junk…and siblings she didn’t know she had are willing to kill her for it.

More important, the junk in her new house is magical, she’s surrounded by monsters, and her life seems to be in mortal peril every time she ventures into a new room. As Bekah discovers more about her mysterious benefactor and the magical world he inhabited, she’s realizes that as tough and resourceful as she is, she might just be in over her head…

Heirs of Grace is a tale of family and magic, action and wonder, blending the strong heroine, cheeky humor, and dark fantasy that have become the hallmarks of Tim Pratt’s writing.

Only The Innocent by Rachel Abbott ($1.50)

Every moment of Sir Hugo Fletcher’s life has been chronicled in the British press: his privileged upbringing, his high-profile charity work to end human trafficking—even his two marriages. But when the billionaire philanthropist is discovered murdered in his London home, tied naked to a bed, the scandal is only a shadow of the darkness lurking off-camera.

Laura Fletcher returns from an Italian vacation to find her husband dead and her home under siege by paparazzi. Is she shocked? Yes. But is she distraught? Not exactly. Especially when Chief Inspector Tom Douglas reveals his suspicions that Hugo’s killer is female. Laura always knew she wasn’t the only woman in Hugo’s life. And she knows she wasn’t the only one with a motive to kill.

The deeper Douglas digs, the more sordid details about Hugo Fletcher he uncovers. And yet nothing compares to the secret Laura guards, a secret that could bring the guilty to justice—or destroy an innocent life forever.

The Woman on the Orient Express by Lindsay Jayne Ashford ($1.50)

Hoping to make a clean break from a fractured marriage, Agatha Christie boards the Orient Express in disguise. But unlike her famous detective Hercule Poirot, she can’t neatly unravel the mysteries she encounters on this fateful journey.

Agatha isn’t the only passenger on board with secrets. Her cabinmate Katharine Keeling’s first marriage ended in tragedy, propelling her toward a second relationship mired in deceit. Nancy Nelson—newly married but carrying another man’s child—is desperate to conceal the pregnancy and teeters on the brink of utter despair. Each woman hides her past from the others, ferociously guarding her secrets. But as the train bound for the Middle East speeds down the track, the parallel courses of their lives shift to intersect—with lasting repercussions.

Filled with evocative imagery, suspense, and emotional complexity, The Woman on the Orient Express explores the bonds of sisterhood forged by shared pain and the power of secrets.

Treasured by Thursday (Weekday Brides Series Book 7) by Catherine Bybee ($1.50)

The seventh and final tale in the dazzling, heartwarming, and pulse-racing Weekday Brides series.

Gabriella Masini: She’s a woman haunted by her past, with the scars to prove it. She believes that fairy tales are for other people. An elite matchmaker at Alliance, she’s great at crunching numbers, but something doesn’t add up with her latest prospective client: a billionaire bad boy with his own secrets. When Gabi refuses to be his temporary wife, Hunter forces her hand with an offer she can’t refuse. But marriage to a man like that could never last…or could it?

Hunter Blackwell: Only his bank account is bigger than his ruthless ability to obtain anything he wants. These days, he has a secret reason to settle down, at least for a while—and he thinks the sensual and sassy Gabi will fit the bill perfectly. But when their marriage of convenience becomes downright dangerous, Hunter must decide how far to take his vow to honor and protect Gabi forever.

How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain by Gregory Berns ($1.50)

The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that’s uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly “man’s best friend.” But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?

After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question—use an MRI machine to scan the dog’s brain. His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner.

With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles. Berns’s research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.

How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.

The Language of Hoofbeats by Catherine Ryan Hyde ($1.50)

From the bestselling author of Pay It Forward comes a story of the heartbreak and healing power of family. New to a small town, Jackie and Paula envision a quiet life for their kids: a young adopted son and two teenage foster children, including the troubled Star. However, they quickly butt heads with their neighbor, Clementine, who disapproves of their lifestyle and is incensed when Star befriends her spirited horse, Comet. Haunted by past tragedy and unable to properly care for Comet, Clem nevertheless resents the bond Star soon shares with the horse. When Star disappears with Comet, the neighbors are thrown together—far too close together. But as the search for the pair wears on, both families must learn to put aside their animosity and confront the choices they’ve made and the scars they carry. Plumbing the depths of regret and forgiveness, The Language of Hoofbeats explores the strange alchemy that transforms a group of people into a family.

Winner of a Rainbow Award

The One I Was by Eliza Graham ($1.50)

Restless, troubled Rosamond Hunter has spent most of her life running away from the past, filled with guilt about her involuntary role in her mother’s death. When her nursing job brings her back to Fairfleet, her childhood home, to care for an elderly refugee, she is forced to confront the ghosts that have haunted her for so long.

Her patient, Benny Gault, first came to Fairfleet, England, in 1939, having fled Nazi Germany on a Kindertransport train.

As his health fails, he and Rosamond begin to confide in each other. At first their tentative friendship revolves around the love they both shared for Rosamond’s glamorous grandmother, Harriet, but as their trust in each other grows, guilty secrets are exposed and history is turned on its head.

From the acclaimed author of Playing with the Moon and Restitution comes a beautiful and haunting tale of friendship, redemption and forgiveness across generations.

Revised edition: This edition of The One I Was includes editorial revisions.

Blurb:

Torn between two men, Sally must follow her heart and decide if love will lead her to the city or the countryside.

Twenty-Two year old Sally Rayton returns to the family farm she deserted four years ago to bury her grandfather. Her plan: to settle her grandfather’s estate and return to her life in the city with her boyfriend, Trevor Mattson.

Her childhood friend, Jack Smith, has other ideas.

Jack convinces Sally to transform the farm into a brewery and fulfill her grandfather’s dream while keeping the Rayton Farm in the family. Sally works side-by-side with Jack while Trevor is hundreds of miles away in the city. The more time she spends with Jack, the stronger her feelings are for him.

When Trevor shows up to propose to Sally right before Christmas and finds her in Jack’s embrace, she must make the biggest choice of her life: true love.

Excerpt:

The next morning, Sally woke to the smell of sizzling bacon. She stretched in bed before putting on her robe. She glanced at the clock. It was already eight. She looked out the window. As far as she could see, snow covered everything like a warm glittering blanket. She hugged herself.

“So, this is what it means to be in love? I like it.”

She crept down the stairs, to see what Trevor was cooking. A smile lit her face and she sat in her grandpa’s rocking chair, watching Trevor in the kitchen. He wore a green plaid robe, his hair ruffled from sleep and there was a slight pillow crease across his left cheek. He flipped pancakes while whistling a classic rock song. She hugged her knees, reveling in her domestic bliss.

“I could get used to this,” she whispered.

He turned around and grinned.

“Good morning, beautiful. Want some coffee?”

She walked into the kitchen, giggling as if it was Christmas.

“It’s like I’m dreaming, what with you here, making breakfast.”

He handed her a mug of steaming coffee. She took a sip.

“Ahh, it’s just how I take it. Heavy cream and sugar.” She took another sip.

Trevor pulled her into his embrace.

“You are a vision in white, my angel.” He kissed her senseless. Her body responded and she burned with desire. She peppered kisses along his jawline.

“I want to go back to bed,” she whispered in his ear. She raked her teeth down his ear.

He moaned.

“You drive me crazy when you do that.” His hot breath searing her neck.

“Mmm…” she whispered.

He playfully slapped her butt.

“Vixen.”

She laughed seductively.

“Now go sit at the table and wait for breakfast.” He refilled her coffee. “Tsk tsk tsk, distracting the cook.” He winked.

Sally From Planting the Seeds of Love Sits Down With MRS N #romance #ASMSG #IARTG

PTSOL

Mrs. N: It’s my great pleasure to introduce you to one of my favorite characters, Sally Rayton. She’s the leading lady in Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella.

Sally: For Pete’s sake, you’re going to have them think I’m a celebrity, like Kristin Kreuk. I’m just a normal girl trying to figure out what I want to do with my life.

Mrs. N: This was your idea, Sally. Now’s not the time to be modest. These fine readers want to know more about you. (pauses to look down) Now then let’s start with the first question. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Sally: Hmm, I used to think that opening my own café in the city, away from the Rayton Farm and all the gossipers, was my idea of happiness.

Mrs. N: And now?

Sally: Now, I’m conflicted. I mean, on one hand I have Trevor and life with him in the city is perfect. We make the perfect couple and both have our sights set on becoming a success in the city. But then there’s Jack…

Mrs. N: Ah yes, Jack, the sexy boy next door who’s loved you since you were little.

Sally: (rolls eyes) You always bring that up. Yes, Jack’s my best friend and I guess he could be considered sexy, although I don’t see him that way.

Mrs. N: You don’t?

Sally: Well… maybe a little. (clears throat nervously) Can we move onto the next question?

Mrs. N: Sure… What is your greatest fear?

Sally: Oh, that’s easy, ending up like my sister. My sister got pregnant when she was fifteen, ran away from home with the Mayor’s son and hasn’t been heard of since.

Mrs. N: Why is that a fear of yours?

Sally: You should realize that since my sister was six years older than me, the gossipers reminded me on a daily basis what a disappointment she became and an embarrassment to the Rayton name. See, we’re one of the oldest families in the county and well-respected. But my sister messed up and people used her misfortune to make themselves feel better. I vowed when I was fifteen, I would NEVER allow people to talk that way about me.

Mrs. N: Good for you. You’re a strong woman and I admire that trait in you. What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Sally: I hate liars. I’m a big girl. I’d much rather someone speaks the truth to me than lie. I guess I learned that from my grandfather. I remember when I was about six years old, I chased rabbits into the woods behind the barn. I knew I wasn’t allowed back there but I did it anyway. When it was time for supper, my grandfather asked me where I’d been. I lied and told him I was off playing in the wheat field. He scolded me for not only going back into the woods (which he saw from the barn window) but lying about it. “Never lie, Sally, especially to me. It’s the worst thing you can do.” I never forgot and adopted his view on lying.

Mrs. N: I already know the answer to this next question. What is your greatest extravagance?

Sally: Oooh, my books. I love books and have a nice collection of leather-bound classics. Trevor gave me a first-edition of one of my favorite books and it was the nicest birthday present I’ve ever received.

Mrs. N: How lovely. That must’ve cost him a pretty penny. First editions are expensive but even more so in hardcover.

Sally: I don’t know how much it cost but evidentially he thought I was worth it.

Mrs. N: No need to be defensive, dear. I was merely pointing out a fact.

Sally: I’m sorry, I’m a little touchy when it comes to money.

Mrs. N: It’s okay, I know how much Trevor means to you. Let’s move on to the last question. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

Sally: (Laughs) You’ll think it’s funny but I’d love to come back as a bunny. They’re soft, fluffy and hop around the garden finding food to nibble on. Think Peter Cottontail, that’s me.

Mrs. N: (Laughs) Only it would be Sally Cottontail in your case. Thank you, Sally, for sitting down for a few moments and chatting with me.

Sally: It was my pleasure.

Mrs. N: If you’d like to find out more about this fascinating love triangle (Sally, Trevor and Jack), now is a great time to purchase Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella.

When Trevor shows up to propose to Sally right before Christmas and finds her in Jack’s embrace, she must make the biggest choice of her life: true love.

Excerpt:

“Jack, thank you so much for the lift into town,” a woman replied behind Sally. “Let’s grab some lunch before we shop.”

Sally froze. She stared at Linda who shook her head. What was Jack doing with a woman in town?

“Here, let me take your coat, Emma,” Jack said.

Emma? mouthed Sally to Linda.

“She’s the daughter of Lonnie and Mary Beth.” Linda gave Emma the look-over and scoffed, “She can’t be a day over sixteen.”

“What do I do?” Sally panicked. Normally she didn’t care what Jack did or who he went off with. Curiosity got the better of her and she turned around.

Emma stood five foot three with curly blonde hair and innocent green eyes. Her figure was slim with curves in all the right places. Sally narrowed her eyes as Emma stood on tiptoe to kiss Jack on the cheek.

Fuming, Sally turned around. Linda chuckled.

“What?”

“You better tone down your jealousy, darlin’. You’re shooting darts everywhere.”

Sally gritted her teeth.

“I’m not jealous. If Jack wants school girls kissing him, what do I care?” She took a deep drink of her coffee, draining the cup. She slammed it down.

“Simmer down, here they come,” whispered Linda. She waved to Jack while Sally swore under her breath.

“Well, fancy meeting you two here,” Jack drawled.

Without looking up Sally retorted, “I told you I was coming into town today.”

Linda kicked Sally’s leg under the table. Sally plastered a smile across her face, greeting Jack and Emma.

“Yes, what a coincidence.” Sally noticed Emma looping her arm in Jack’s and snuggling closer.

“I was on my way into town to pick up those parts we ordered for the tractor when I ran into Emma walking by herself in the snow.” Jack smiled. Emma squeezed his arm.

“He pulled over and offered me a lift into town. Isn’t he a gentleman?” cooed Emma. Jack patted her hand.

Sally’s chest constricted at the sight of the two of them acting all couple-y. She stared into his twinkling eyes. Oh God, is he laughing at me? Emma can’t have him. He’s mine. Wait what?

“So,” Linda broke the strained silence. “I have to go powder my nose. Emma, would you care to join me?”

“What’s that?” Emma looked confused.

Linda laughed. “It’s the bathroom, dear sweet child.” She stood up, untangled Emma from Jack and guided Emma away from the table.

Jack sat down.

“What’s with you today?” he asked.

“Nothing.” Sally cleared her throat.

He raised an eyebrow.

“Really!” A few diners turned to stare. Sally flushed with embarrassment. She didn’t mean to talk so loud. She looked everywhere except in Jack’s direction.

Jack observed Sally as she fidgeted, first with her coffee cup then with the silverware. His gaze unnerved her and she practically jumped out of her chair when he placed a hand over hers. Electricity flew up her arm while warmth filled her core. Butterflies raced around her stomach, only she didn’t feel sick; she pulsed with life, like never before.

“Sally…look at me.”

Sally shook her head.

“You’ll only laugh at me.”

Jack’s thumb caressed her hand gently, causing her breath to hitch.

“You know I’d never laugh at you. Laugh with you, definitely, but never at you.”

Sally lifted her gaze to meet Jack’s loving eyes. He slid his fingers between hers, never breaking eye contact. Sparks flew between them. He moistened his lips with a flick of his tongue. Her gaze dropped to his lips.

“Please tell me. I’m begging you,” he whispered.

Unable to think clearly through the fog of desire, Sally tilted her head to one side. Her skin vibrated with heat while her nerve-endings jumped at the slightest caress.

“Tell you what?” she whispered. Her throat dry, her breathing shallow, she wet her lips with her tongue. She was under a spell and everything fell away except for Jack’s passionate eyes.

“Tell me what my wasted heart needs to hear.” His eyes flashed. “Tell me Emma made you jealous.”

Sally started to nod but Emma interrupted.

“What are you guys talking about in hushed tones? Crops and stuff?”

Jack groaned. He dropped Sally’s hand as if it burned him, causing the water glasses to jostle.

Excerpt:

“But that’s not what’s bothering you.” He paused. “Is it?”

She sighed.

“No,” she whispered.

“Grandpa knows best.” He patted his chest. She laid her head on his chest, curled up in a ball and wrapped her arm around him.

“Oh Grandpa…” she cried. “I’m so confused.”

He held her close as she cried. When she was done, he gave her his red handkerchief. She blew her nose before continuing.

“I love them both. Insane, isn’t it?”

He shook his head.

“It’s perfectly natural to love two men at the same time. You love Trevor for the man he is and for the life you have in the city. He’s a good man, with a good family. He can offer you security and he loves you very much.”

Sally chewed on her lower lip as she thought about Trevor.

“Jack, however, holds a special place in your heart. Always has and always will. You grew up together. He’s a brave man, willing to do anything for you, even if it means letting you go. His love for you goes beyond the here and now; he’s loved you his whole life.”

“Jack? He’s loved me all this time?” She looked up into his warm eyes.

“Of course. But his love is not in question. What about you? Do you love him?”

She furrowed her brows.

“I… I don’t know.”

“You love Trevor.” He paused. “Can you imagine spending the rest of your life with him? Have children with him? Build a life in the city with him, leaving all this behind?”

She scrunched up her face, as if in pain.

“I don’t know. I guess that’s what I have to figure out.” She sat up straight. “What do you think?”

He laughed.

“Don’t put this on me, girl. It’s not my life, not my heart. You have to choose.”

“But I can’t choose.” She stood up and started pacing back and forth.

He watched her agony for a moment before dealing the blow.

“Can you imagine life without Jack?”

Sally sucked in her breath. Pain spread throughout her whole body, as if someone punched her in the stomach.

“You’ve had Jack in your life since you were little, always depending on him and him always being there for you. What if he wasn’t there? What if he was gone forever? Could you live without him?”

She paled at the thought.

“You’re right, Jack’s been with me, through thick and thin.” She sat down next to him, hugging her knees to her chest.

“Unconditional love, like what I have with your grandma, comes along once. Both of these men love you unconditionally. You have to choose which one you want to spend your life with.”

He stood up and pulled her to her feet.

“My time is up, my child. Think about what I’ve said.” He hugged her tight.

Sally lifted her chin to let it sit on his shoulders.

“I love you so much!” She choked up. “I wish you didn’t have to go.”

He cupped her face in his big hands.

“I love you, always have and always will. I’m still alive in your heart, your memories. Follow your heart, Sally.”

I love to lay and listen

As my beauty sleeps.

The sound of each breath

As my beauty sleeps.

I think how I will awaken her

As my beauty sleeps.

To kiss her softly

That is my plan

As my beauty sleeps.

My lips move close

But I just enjoy listening

Excerpt:

Joe began to go after André, but I stopped him. Longing and pride were deeply engrained in André, and he had put up a barrier against the Light trying to make its way into his heart. He wanted a heart of stone, to stop the pain.

I laid a hand on Joe’s chest and he looked at me with tears of his own. I could feel in my heart that he didn’t understand how André had become homeless. He looked utterly grief-stricken. It was almost too much for me.

I turned to watch André’s departure. I could still sense the darkness battling with the good inside his soul. You will not defeat the Light, and André will be free of you. I hoped the darkness could hear me.

A shooting pain in my forehead brought tears to my eyes. I blinked rapidly and before I knew what happened, images of André and Joey flashed in front of me.

André was dressed in a suit and was laughing with Alfred. There were about twenty people in a room and it was a birthday party for a little boy. Alfred paused as the birthday boy appeared at his side.

André bent down and ruffled the boy’s hair. “Hey there, Joey, how does it feel to be a year older?”

“It’s great, Mr. A. Did you know I’m six now?” Joey beamed.

“You are? Well, you’re almost the same age as my daughter, Katherine.”

Joe looked around. “Did you bring her today? I don’t see her, sir.”

Alfred cleared his throat and smiled sympathetically at André. “Son, she couldn’t come today.”

André sniffed and cleared his throat nervously. “Little Joey, buddy, Mr. A could really use something to drink. Could you help me find your mama?”

“Sure, Mr. A, sir. I can find her and tell you all about new friend, Ronnie. He makes the best mud pies. All the girls hate them.” Joey grabbed André’s hand and led him away.

As the vision faded, I knew that if Joe went after him, it would only make things worse. What I wasn’t prepared for was the naked pain in Joe’s eyes and being able to sense his emotions as if they were my own.

Joe was hurt that André was the Walking Man and knowing him made this all the more personal. It will happen, as the Light has planned, I wanted to say. Instead, I whispered, “Joe, I am sorry.”

Joe closed his eyes for a moment and replied in a shaky voice, “Mary, he was a friend of my father’s. I knew him. I mean, I know him.” He opened his eyes and looked past me at André walking away. “Why did you stop me?”

I dropped my hand from Joe’s chest and said, “Joe, he was embarrassed at you giving him things. We should be glad that he took them at all.”

I looked up to see two demons appear in a cloud of black behind André, dressed as teens in black leather. They pushed André and knocked the bags from his arms. The male teen shouted, “This is my park, old man! These belong to me!”

André said nothing, just shrugged and stepped back.

My head started pounding as I heard Gabriel yell, Stop! My eyes narrowed and before I even noticed he moved, Joe was halfway to André.

I screamed, “Joe, stop!”

I knew it was a demon ambush and started to run after Joe.

Nine Quirky Facts Mrs. N Doesn’t Want You to Know #ASMSG #IARTG #AmWriting

nine-quirky-facts

Mr. N here, Mrs. N is off working today (and doing a superb job, too) so I thought it would be the perfect time to spotlight my beloved. Mrs. N is a gifted writer and at times, she’s too shy to toot her own horn. So, as her soul mate and writing partner, I’m qualified to do it for her. 😉 Shhh, just don’t tell her. It’ll have to be our little secret.

The first story I ever wrote was about a princess who escaped her ivory tower and became best friends with a purple dragon named Patsy. I know, the name could use work and I was a rebel even back then. I wrote it for English class and got an A+. Ahhh, my first review. 🙂

I have a hard time writing in the company of others. That’s why I can’t write in a coffee shop or surrounded by people. I feel self-conscious and my muse shuts down. I have to be alone with no prying eyes peeking over my shoulder.

I get distracted easily. Thus, no television on but music is a must for my writing environment. If there is something that catches my eye, I have to force myself back to my writing. Otherwise, procrastination takes hold and I’ll never get anything done.

I free-write a lot. I talk about the freedom and flooding of ideas that happens every time I free-write. The act of just letting my fingers do the talking is one of the best ways my characters emerge.

When I was 16, I won first prize in a poetry contest paying tribute to our veterans. I won $50 and invited to be on a float. I spent the money on books and politely declined to appear on the float (painfully shy).

I use life experiences to create real, honest characters in my writing. I’m a firm believer that life is filled with inspiration.

Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella is my first foray into contemporary romance. I’ve been a reader of romance since I was twelve and the pressure was on. I normally write paranormal romance but I loved writing this novella. Sally’s story flowed out of me faster than I could write it down.

I got caught up in the “proper way” of writing almost two years ago and as a result, lost my writing fire. I listened to a few people who told me I was doing it wrong. The thing is, each writer has his/her own writing style and I have my own way of telling a story. It’s what makes me unique. I’m happy to say that I am back to writing in my own style and happier than I’ve ever been!

I write flash fiction and poetry as a warm-up to writing a novel/novella. I start with a writing prompt and let my muse take over. It gets the ideas flowing and my fingers write faster than I can keep up. I then keep them for later book ideas. Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella came from a flash fiction story I wrote back in March 2015.

A few bonus facts:

I love to read books. It’s a passion of mine and I continue to discover new authors.

I love to bake goodies and my new favorite thing is to add boxed chocolates to brownie batter and bake. It adds such a depth of chocolate flavor and sophistication.

I’m a happy positive person, most of the time. Sometimes I get frustrated and tired but then I give myself a shake and am happy again.

Excerpt:

Jack looked where she pointed.

“Sally…” he began.

“Yes?”

“Are you planning on selling it when the farm’s made a profit?”

Sally sighed.

He turned her body around, his gaze penetrating hers.

“I don’t know,” she whispered. “I know Grandpa wanted me to keep it in the family.” She furrowed her brow. “I’m not a country girl; my heart belongs to the city.”

“Hey, it’s okay.” He moved a step closer. “Farming is hard work and you have to love it to make it successful.” He put a hand on her shoulder. “Don’t beat yourself up for following your heart.”

Sally winced.

“What?”

“Jack, I’m not sure what my heart wants. Part of me loves being here, carrying on the family name.”

“But…” Jack raised an eyebrow warily.

“But I have a life in the city. I’ve almost finished my degree –”

“You have Trevor,” Jack interrupted her. He shook his head.

“What’s wrong with that? Yes, I have a life and a boyfriend in the city. I’ve told you a thousand times my dream is to open my own sidewalk cafe.” She folded her arms over her chest. “Don’t you want me to be happy, Jack?” Her voice sounded hurt, even to her own ears.

He closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead.

“This isn’t going how I wanted it to.” He glanced up at her. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply anything. It’s just –”

“What?” Sally cocked her head to one side.

The telephone rang inside.

“Shit, I have to go answer it. I’ll be right back.” She ran into the house.

“Hello?”

“Hi beautiful.” Trevor.

We’re Celebrating Planting the Seeds of Love First Anniversary of Publication #romance #ASMSG #IARTG

ptsol-blog-banner-1-yr-anniversary

We’re so excited because one year ago today, we published Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella. So many readers have loved it and we’re still amazed we wrote it in two weeks.

In honor of this book birthday, we’re sharing one of our favorite scenes. Let us give you some background. Jack and Sally are working hard together trying to turn the Rayton Farm profitable by transforming it into an IPA brewery. Sally’s boyfriend has returned to the city but Trevor is always on her mind.

On the day they’re supposed to meet with a local farmer who agreed to trade his hops, Jack is nowhere to be seen. Sally asks the farmer and he confides that Jack is “sleeping off his drinking binge” in the town’s drunk tank. How strange, thinks Sally. It’s so unlike Jack yet she has no idea she’s the reason behind Jack’s odd behavior. She’s in for an earful, not to mention an olfactory assault. Hee hee hee. Enjoy!

Don’t forget Planting the Seeds of Love is FREE on Kindle Unlimited and only $2.99 USD at Amazon Worldwide.

Title: Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella

Author: N. N. Light

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

Excerpt:

“Jack, you’ve got a visitor,” the cop bellowed.

A moan came from the cell and Sally snickered. He looked like five miles of bad road. His dark hair matted to his head, his clothes were dirty and there were rips in his shirt. His face ashen, his eyes blank, he paled at the sight of her.

“You just let me know if he gives you any trouble, Miss Sally.” The cop laughed and left them alone.

She nodded and took a step forward.

Jack made a move to sit upright, clutching his head like a bowling ball.

“So, this is your new place?” She curled a finger around a cell bar. “It’s nice; a little sparse, but nice.”

“Don’t you have something better to do than to gloat?” he whispered hoarsely.

Sally sighed.

“I didn’t come here to gloat.”

He peeked around his fingers at her in disbelief.

“You didn’t?”

“No. I came here to find out why my partner wasn’t where he promised he would be.”

His eyes slid closed.

“Shit, the hops.” He groaned and lay back down on the cot.

“Yes.” She looked at him hard. “How can I depend on you if you go out all night and get into fights with…” she trailed off.

Silence echoed off the walls. Sally waited.

“I’m sorry,” he croaked. “I wasn’t thinking.”

“That’s right, you weren’t thinking,” she agreed. “How can we be partners if you’re not willing to be there for important farm business?”

Jack stood, looking like a seasick sailor, and walked to the cell bars. His skin had a definite green tinge and she was sure he was forcing himself not to retch. He hooked his pinky finger around hers.

“Remember our pinky swear when we were kids?” His eyes searched hers.

Sally nodded. She held her breath as he stunk of beer and garbage.

“I pinky swear from this moment on I, Jack Smith, will never get drunk and get into stupid fights. I pinky swear to never let you down again.”

“Oh Jack, you can’t expect me to uphold that oath. You’re only human; you’re bound to disappoint me.”

Jack swore under his breath. He leaned his forehead against the bars.

“I’m an ass. I don’t know why you put up with me.”

Sally took pity on him. With her other hand, she reached out to touch his hair. She smoothed a strand of hair off his forehead. His eyes pleaded with hers to forgive him.

“Oh Jack, you’re my best friend. No matter what, you know I love you.” Her fingers drew a line from his forehead to his chin. She heard him suck in his breath.

Jack took a step back letting go of her pinky. He crossed his arms; his eyes glittered angrily.

“You love me?” He snorted. “Like hell you do. You don’t even know I exist.”

Sally’s nostrils flared. Taking a step back, she crossed her arms.

“That’s a fine thing to say to me after all we’ve been through.” She turned to leave. “Maybe Trevor’s right…”

“What?” Jack sat down on the cot, not looking at her. “What did Trevor tell you?”

“Trevor has a buyer for the farm. It’s a friend of his father’s and he loves the idea of a brewery out here in the country. He wants to add a restaurant and make it some sort of oasis for city folk.” She ran her fingers through her blonde hair.

“A buyer?” He put his head in his hands and sighed. “It’s too fast.”

“What are you talking about?” She looked down at her watch, wishing she hadn’t come. Her sister was right; men were nothing but trouble.

“Look, I know I’ve messed things up.” He stood and walked towards her. “But you’ve got to give the farm and me a second chance.” He extended his hand through the bars.

Sally’s emotions shook her body. Guilt, love, pain, regret, anger and hope battled for supremacy in her heart.  She eyed his outstretched hand warily.  Could she trust him? Could he be depended upon?

“Why should I give you another chance, Jack?” She let her arms fall to her sides. A force not her own pulled her body closer to his. She whispered, “You hurt me.” Tears welled up but she didn’t care.

He reached up and wiped her tears away.

“Oh Sally,” he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

Her lower lip quivered.

“I’m so sorry. I’m a first-class jerk.” He cupped her face with his hands. “Please don’t cry.”

Sally closed her eyes. She felt like a tiny dingy in the middle of the ocean, battered and torn in pieces. She leaned her head against the bars.

“Your opinion matters most, it always has. When you say things like you just did, it tears me apart.” She lifted her head. “I need you, Jack. I can’t do this without you.”

Jack exhaled slowly.

“That wasn’t me; it was my jealousy rearing its ugly head.”

“What do you mean? What do you have to be jealous of?” Her brows furrowed, she thought hard.

“I’m jealous of how happy you seem to be with Trevor,” he replied.

“Oh Jack, I’m relieved to hear you say that. I was worried it was something else.”

His expression turned serious.

Excerpt:

“Sally,” a male voice called out.

She peeked her head around the elm tree and her mouth dropped open. Jack Smith. Gone was the rail-thin boy she knew all her life. He sure looked good, she thought. Strong muscular arms peeked out from his blue t-shirt and rock-solid thighs flexed through his khaki shorts as he closed the distance between them. His brown curly hair damp with sweat clung to his forehead and the nape of his neck, his green eyes twinkled with that same mischievous look he always had and his lips were full. Kiss him. Wait what? I can’t kiss Jack. He’s my best friend.  He hugged her and flung her into the air. Sally laughed in his strong arms.

“What are you doing here, Jack?” She was breathless and excited at the same time. She hadn’t laughed since she got the telephone call Grandpa had died. She wrapped her arms around his tan neck and really looked at him.

“When did you get back?” He asked. Jack set her down. He frowned. “I was sorry to hear about your grandpa. He was a good man.” He took a half a step back.

That sobered her up fast. She nodded as tears clouded her vision. She wiped them away with an angry swipe. “Yesterday afternoon,” was all she managed before the grief and guilt gripped her like a tidal wave. She started to shake and without asking, Jack pulled her into his embrace.

“Shhh, it’s okay Sally.” He held her tight. “We both know how much you loved him.”

She beheld him, blurry-eyed.

“I wasn’t here, though. I should’ve been, Jack.” She bit her lip to quell the shaking.

“It’s not your fault, Sally. I told him a thousand times not to go chasing after the coyotes. But you know your grandpa; he’s more stubborn than you.”

She smiled and dried her eyes.

“There’s that Rayton smile I know and love.” Jack winked.

She pushed playfully against his chest. Wow, solid muscle. When did he get so strong and muscular?

Five Steps to Writing a Romance Novella in Two Weeks #amwriting #writingtips #ASMSG

Can you write a romance novella (20,000 words) in two weeks?

You bet!

Here are my five steps to writing a romance novella in only two weeks:

1- Create a writing plan. Before becoming a published author, I was very disorganized. Being the creative-type, I just went with the flow and wrote when I felt like writing. This doesn’t work when you have a goal of writing 20,000 words in ten days. So, I enlisted the help of my husband (totally organized) and together we created a writing schedule. Since I don’t write on the weekends, I only had ten days to work with. Each day, I had to write a minimum of 2,000 words.

Confession: There were some days when I only got 1,500 words done. The next day, I made up the missing words by writing 2,500 words. I didn’t stress when I came up short on a day. Stress breeds writer’s block and no one wants that.

2- Block out time and turn off all distractions. I know this is hard to do nowadays but it helped me immensely. I wrote from 1:00 – 5:00 pm every day. I made sure the phone was turned off and that I had all of my other to-do’s done before lunchtime. I shut down social media and email so I wasn’t distracted. I made sure I had my water bottle nearby and had music on to get me in the mood. I even put on a hat that I called my “writing” hat to get me ready to write. When I had on my hat, I was in writer-mode.

3- Keep a notebook of notes you can jot down character names, story-arcs and ideas. I found this crucial when I was writing. I was able to flip through my notes and keep writing. My notes allowed the ideas to flow out of me quicker onto the page while staying focused on the plot.

4- Have a few accountability partners. This is one of the most important steps. Time is limited and you have a goal to reach. You need your own cheering section. Halfway-through, I started to lose momentum. My brain was tired and I started to doubt my ability to reach my goal of 20,000 words. I reached out to my three accountability partners and they boosted my spirits.

5- Celebrate when you achieve your goal. Before I started writing my romance novella, I told myself when I finished I was going to celebrate. If I was going to work my fingers (and muse) to the bone, the least I could do is get something in return. My husband decided to cook me a gourmet meal with my favorites (lobster, steak, garlic mashed potatoes and creamed corn) when we finished. The image of that meal kept me going, even through the rough patches.

It took me two weeks (intense writing boot camp) but I did it! I wrote a romance novella in that stretch of time and it’s one I’m extremely proud of. In fact, that same novella is featured below.

PTSOL teaser 1

A Critical Review of Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella #ASMSG #IARTG #MFRWAuthor

I woke up this morning to a surprise in my inbox. Reviewer Olga from Rosie’s Book Review Team posted her review of Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella. Here is the review in full detail:

“I’m reviewing this novella as part of Rosie’s Book Review Team and I was offered a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This romantic novella (with no erotica) centres on a young woman, Sally. When her grandfather dies she goes back to his farm that she’d left to go and study in the city. His death and his testament turn her ordered life upside down. She has a boyfriend in the city, Trevor, and she plans to have a coffee shop back there. But in his will her grandfather asks her to look after the farm and to do it with the help of her childhood friend, Jack. They used to play together as children, and he was the knight in shining armour to her beautiful princess. The farm is in financial difficulties, but those can’t compare to the troubles of the heart Sally gets into. Ultimately she must decide if she wants to stay in the farm (now turned into a brewery) with Jack, or go back to the city with Trevor.

This is an easy read, with likeable characters. There are no major complexities and although the two male characters confront each other, there is no big drama or real tragedies on the way, although there are mishaps and worries. Most of the difficulties Sally experiences are down to her heart and her lack of clarity about her true feelings. The author is good at capturing the nuances of the emotions and the subjective state of mind of the main character whilst avoiding explicit scenes. She is also particularly skilled at creating romantic scenes, without going into too much description or detail, allowing the readers to use their own imagination and put themselves in the characters’ place.

Planting the Seeds of Love will make you smile and it’s the perfect read for when you want something short, sweet and not taxing. The perfect break from a heavy day; it will lift your spirits.

A Chapter Share- Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella #Romance #ASMSG #IARTG

PTSOL

Christmas is almost here and feeling generous, I wanted to share the first chapter of Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella. I’m very proud of this story and I hope you enjoy it.

Chapter 1

Sally set her grandfather’s ledger down. She sighed and looked at her watch. It’s only 1:30, she thought. Trevor should be here by now. I emailed him directions and he was leaving as soon as he took his last exam.  She peered down the lane but there wasn’t a sign of anyone. Not even a squirrel. Tightly packed trees obstructed her view to the road, branches and leaves entwined.

It has been four years since she last said good-bye to the farm. Her grandfather was angry; she remembered their conversation as if it happened yesterday.

“You can’t leave, I need you.” Her grandfather crossed his arms across his broad chest. He towered over her petite five foot four frame but she stuck out her chin defensively.

“I want to do something, go somewhere. I’m tired of being in this small town.” She raised her voice. “You don’t know how much I hate this place, Grandpa. People judge me by the Rayton name, comparing me to all the other Rayton girls.”

He shrugged. “What’s wrong with that? You should be proud of being a Rayton.” He stared off into the distance for a moment before shaking his head. He narrowed his eyes. “Are you ashamed of being a Rayton, girl?”

“Of course not! I just don’t want to be compared to my sister.” She exhaled. “It’s not my fault she up and ran away from home when she was fifteen. I’m not her, Grandpa. You know I love you but I need to step out on my own, to make a name for myself.”

He hugged her hard. “You’re more like me than the rest of the family put together. I love you,” he whispered gruffly. He held her at arm’s length to look into her eyes. “You promise me you’ll return.”

She sniffed and nodded. She’d never seen such emotion from him before. Her life-long friend, Jack, had been right, Grandpa understood.

A twig snapped, bringing her back to the present. Must be an animal.

It was a warm spring day and the air was heavy with humidity. Sally fanned herself with her right hand. I’ve gotta get out of here. Without looking back, she bounded down the steps and walked down the lane. With every step, she filled her lungs with air. Her head started to clear.

The trees gave shade and a slight breeze tickled her pale skin. Her blonde ponytail swung back and forth. She was dressed in a hot pink tank top and white jean cut offs. She looked up at the mammoth trees, many planted over seventy-five years ago. Oak, maple and birch leaves winked in the sunlight. She stopped and touched the trunk of her tree.

Yes, it was her tree and she even carved her initials at the bottom. She bent down and traced the jagged S and R. A few inches below were the initials J and S. Jack. Jack, her best friend, lived next door. “Wonder how he’s doing,” she murmured.

A whistle pierced her thoughts. She froze. Who’s that? She whirled around and listened. Footsteps coming closer. Someone was in the lane. But who? It wasn’t Trevor as he was coming by car.

A car honked. Sally and Jack jumped. Sally put a hand to her racing heart and turned to see Trevor in his black Corolla, gesturing for them to get out of the way. She felt herself blush.

“Who’s that?” Jack asked her. She detected an edginess to Jack’s voice that wasn’t there before.

“My boyfriend, Trevor.” She stepped back so he could park in front of the house. Jack grabbed her elbow. She looked into Jack’s stormy eyes, as her stomach pitched. She ran to the nearest tree and emptied her stomach.

Planting the Seeds of Love A Novella ~ 2 New Reviews, A Spotlight & #Giveaway! #ASMSG #IARTG

PTSOL banner

I have amazing news! Planting the Seeds of Love: A Novella just got two book reviews on Amazon from readers. Both are five star reviews and they speak of the crux of my novella. Here they are:

on October 14, 2015
A sweet, clean romance featuring a woman caught between two worlds – the small-town farm she inherits from her grandfather, and the big city she has moved to. Each comes with its own romantic interest: a childhood friend for the former; a fellow student who adores her for the latter.

The writing is impeccable, the pacing perfect, the heroes easy to identify with and care for, and the story a welcome change from the usual “good boy vs bad boy” tale. In this novella, no choice is perfect, and that only adds to its charm.

A perfect read, even for a reader like me – someone who doesn’t normally read romances.

I received a free copy by the author, in exchange for an honest review.

on October 10, 2015
I admit – I’d become jaded by so many books in the romance genre. Gone it seems were days when a relationship built over time, the complex layers of a person’s personality coming to light, emotions laid bare. It seemed by page 4 in most books everyone’s naked. I found N. N. Light’s book refreshingly honest in its character development while still laying out those adult themes of desire, loss of control and jealousy. Sally is both smart and spirited in the way in which she engages with two men, who only have their love of her in common. So many of her feelings and words resonated back to scenes that played out in my own life. The scene in which she “visited” with her departed grandfather moved me to tears, having lost two members of my family not long ago, as it was written with such depth of heart.

I too, am glad I followed my heart, as Sally had to by the end of this engaging story. A delightful novella from an author I look forward to reading further.

Five Steps to Writing a Romance Novella in Two Weeks #writingtips #MFRWAuthor #ASMSG #IARTG

free writing

My husband is amazing and so supportive. Every night, he asked me about what I wrote and how I did. He listened as I brainstormed and offered feedback.

5- Celebrate when you achieve your goal. Before I started writing my romance novella, I told myself when I finished I was going to celebrate. If I was going to work my fingers (and muse) to the bone, the least I could do is get something in return. My husband decided to cook me a gourmet meal with my favorites (lobster, steak, garlic mashed potatoes and creamed corn) when I finished. The image of that meal kept me going, even through the rough patches.

It took me two weeks (intense writing boot camp) but I did it! I wrote a romance novella in that stretch of time and it’s one I’m extremely proud of. In fact, that same novella is featured below.

Author Bio: N. N. Light has been creating stories ever since she was little. Her grandfather remembers when she was two years old, she would stand at the top of the stairs and tell him a story filled with emotion (and in a language foreign to him) with her hands on her hips. Let’s just say she was a born storyteller.

She was born in Minnesota, lived in Southern California only to move to chilly Ontario, Canada to marry her beloved husband MR N. She is blissfully happy and loves all things chocolate, books, music, movies, art, sports and baking. Her mantra is to spread the Light.

Most of the time you can find her on Twitter or getting new ideas on how to spread the Light on Pinterest. She is a proud member of ASMSG, Independent Author Network and Marketing for Romance Writers.

In addition to being an author, she’s also a book promoter/reviewer and social media marketer. She loves books, has ever since she was young. Matching up books and readers is something that gives her great pleasure.

She’d love to connect with you either via email or via these various social media sites:
