A Must Read for Fans of Love — Poetry of Love is on Sale This Weekend Only! #99cents #IARTG

poetry-of-love-the-engagementyear-jpg

Poetry, especially love poetry, is nothing more than emotions on a page. Poems don’t have to follow certain rules or format, just honest and truthful. During our engagement, Mr. N worked 18 hours a day and we didn’t get a chance to see each other much. I’d miss him and after the millionth time of letting him know I wished we could spend more time together, he wrote this poem:

Our Love

Our love exists in so many ways

Even when parted I feel you

I long for your gaze

Knowing our love is true.

When in the heaven of your arms

I feel our love’s warmth surround me.

Your grace, beauty and charm

Leave me gasping breathless in serenity.

The pureness, sweetness and sincerity

Our so perfect love

Oft compels me to my knees

To thank our Lord above

For our love.

Pretty amazing, huh? We’re examples that true love, courtship and soul mates exist and this book is a collection of honest-to-goodness poems Mr. N wrote to me. It’s not fancy prose but naked emotion about our engagement and our journey from girlfriend/boyfriend to wife/husband.

New Review:

“What a touching book of love. The poetry is heartfelt and full of love. Each one shows how much he was looking forward to his future with her. The poems are in freestyle and are direct from the heart. A must read for fans of love. It will make you jealous that your husband to be didn’t write all these wonderful words about you and your future.” – M. Fullington (Amazon)

Consider our collection of love poetry. It’s a modern-day courtship, 100% honest and for this weekend only, 99 cents!

Poetry is Vital to Society and Our Human Experience! #inspiration #poetry #NationalPoetryDay

Poetry

One of my favorite movies of all time is Dead Poets Society. In it, a professor (played brilliantly by Robin Williams) teaches a group of young men the value of poetry and why it’s so important. The quote above is from one of his teachings.

Poetry, no matter the form it takes (verse, prose, song, rap), is a glimpse into the human experience. It gives the writer as well as the reader a chance to let go of society’s restraints and immerse in an artistic expression of thought, feeling and/or insight. It’s like being a voyeur, only totally legal.

Today is National Poetry Day and on this day we encourage you to either read or write poetry. Write about anything. Read from a poet you’ve never heard of. Let go of your preconceived notions and just enjoy.

Here are a few of our poems for you to enjoy:

Poetry is a beautiful way to experience life and I, for one, would be lost without it.

MRS N

Meet Stoet (Storyteller and Poet) Frida R. and her Latest Release #books #FridayReads

Frida R Author Photo

Many of you might not know that MRS N loves reading urban fiction/prose/poetry. I happened across Frida on social media and we just clicked. Maybe it’s because we’ve been through our share of heartbreak and suffering, maybe it’s because our natural writing style is poetic prose, who knows what it was but we connected. I asked her to sit down with me for an interview and she agreed. Her answers intrigued me and her excerpt gripped me. Please take a moment and check her out. Let’s get started…

What is your writing process?

Oddly enough, I’ve never even thought about this before, but I guess I do have a writing process. I always have my journal with me, so I can jot things down no matter where I am. But when I really want to get into writing, I have a bottle of wine, with the lights in my bedroom dimmed, while playing music that draws emotion out of me. My go-to’s are Mary J. Blige, Adele, Toni Braxton, and Kelly Clarkson. This is usually always a nighttime thing. The moon gives me energy.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I’m already working on my second book. “Blossom’s Wine Bar” was just a little taste of what’s to come. I wanted to use it as an introduction to my voice and writing style, which is why I kept it short. The next book will be at least double the length.

I’m also working on a lifestyle website where I will talk mostly about dating and relationships. It will be somewhat of a follow-up to the articles I wrote for the Huffington Post on the same topics.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?

I do read my reviews. I respond to the positive ones where there is a real human connection to my writing, like someone saying I helped them through a tough time or something like that. I typically just laugh at the negative ones. I can’t allow myself to be bothered by someone who either has a different perception or just missed my point entirely.

Do you drink? Smoke? What’s your vice?

Yes, I drink either whiskey or wine pretty often and I smoke weed here and there. My vices change based on what I have going on. When I want to avoid and cover up my stress, I love the combination of a man who doesn’t ask too many questions and alcohol. When I want to think freely to clear my head, I paint.

What is your biggest fear?

I don’t trust or associate with many people. The people I confide in have been in my life for years, they’ve seen me grow up. My biggest fear isn’t of my own death, it’s theirs, especially my best friend, we’re soulmates. I’m not sure who I would be without that support system.

What were you like as a child? Your favorite toy?

I was a shy and quiet child. My mother sometimes worried that I didn’t have enough friends. I always liked to write. I don’t remember a point in my life where I didn’t have a diary where I wrote all my secrets, even in elementary school.

I was also a tomboy. I wanted to be tough like my older brother, so we fought alot and he taught me how to play baseball. My Barbie’s were my favorite toys. I really enjoyed changing their hairstyles. I’ve always liked experimenting with hair which got me into trouble because I’d always change my own after my mother styled it.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I’d be a lion. I’m a Leo and I’ve always felt connected to them. I love the way the females are beautiful and graceful, yet vicious. I’m a lot like that and I feel my best when my hair is big and crazy like a male lion’s mane.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

If you wanna stand out, write from your heart because no matter how much someone else may try to copy you, no one can duplicate your inner truth. Also, don’t bother to pick up a pen if writing isn’t the reason you breathe. This isn’t something you half-ass. Writing is a calling, not a hobby. Stick with it, hone your craft, and develop an ego that’s rejection proof.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

Recognizing and trusting my intuition. I have so much more clarity now that I’ve let go and decided to follow my instincts. I’m fearless, I take risks, and I learn from my failures. This has impacted every aspect of my life from my relationships, to my health, and career.

Book Blurb

In the memoir-like chapbook, “Blossom’s Wine Bar” Frida R. snatches her audience’s hearts and drags them down the unpaved roads of her messy, ever-changing alcohol soaked world. With fair amounts of wit and grit, “Blossom’s Wine Bar” is a collection of stoems (poems that read like short stories) and personal essays where she pulls readers deeper into her world by revealing the events that pushed her to create such raw art. Genuine, vulnerable and sometimes crass, Frida R. opens up about abortion, relationships, depression, and suicide. With so many things that have gone wrong, she shares the life lessons and moments of self-awareness that allow her to continuously progress because as she says, “If you aren’t going to continue to grow and change, you’re just a waste of food and resources.” “Blossom’s Wine Bar” reads like conversations between friends because Frida R. is an author who thrives from the idea of connecting with her audience. She wishes to be a voice to the voiceless and a source of motivation for the underdog, making her the stoet (storyteller & poet) to look out for.

Excerpt

Untitled

At 3:23, I woke up sweating.

It’s finally happening.

He’s gonna get me.

I began to perform my nighttime routine at 9:53.

I confirmed no one was in the house with me,

checked the locks on the doors and windows,

then adjusted the heat.

I removed my makeup and after I brushed my teeth,

I said a prayer.

I asked for strength and protection, but not relief,

and I included a bit about my misplaced sanity.

I’m not sure if anyone hears this shit but me

cause I can’t remember the last time I slept peacefully.

I was tucked into my bed by 10:15,

finding little comfort in the knife beside me.

I trained myself to sleep with the hall light on

cause when it’s too dark, is when I feel I’m not alone.

It’s 3:33.

Ten minutes ago, the sound of my name

crept into my ear and woke me.

I know his voice, but not his face.

He’s been taking my life away, slowly.

As I sit up in bed hyperventilating,

I hear laughter.

Knowing my torture is his pleasure, I cry.

He keeps laughing at me.

I wish I could call someone,

but he made my friends believe I’m crazy

so, nobody comes around anymore.

The laughter I heard is replaced by chatter.

This is the first time I’ve heard more than just his voice.

I counted four or five men.

I can’t keep up with them,

nor can I make sense of what they say.

If they’re truly inside of me, how will I pull away?

I scream thinking they’ll pause.

Nah. They’re even more riled up

and it’s my fault.

Chatter, chatter.

Faster, faster.

Laughter, louder.

I scream again.

My body is soaking wet with sweat…

I’ve gotta go.

I jump from my bed and my feet land in a red puddle.

I look, but the wine from my nightstand hadn’t spilled.

While I stand there, the puddle grows,

and I know it’s blood flooding my room.

Then, I blink and everything is clean.

Again, they’re laughing at me.

I run.

The walls are closing in on me, I can see the doorway shrinking.

I know it sounds like I’m going insane, but this ain’t my imagination.

I turn the knob and pull with all my strength, but nothing happens.

That’s when he clears his throat and my brain goes silent. My body feels numb.

It’s 3:41.

I can hardly see through my tears

as I fall to the floor.

Warmth covers my body and

I don’t wanna fight no more.

He calls my name and I open my eyes

to see blood on my legs and feet.

I look above me and see it leaking from the ceiling.

I’m right beneath my bedroom.

I’m not even shocked.

It’s 4:00.

There’s a whisper with a message.

It’s an instruction, I’m being tested.

He promises more torment if I fail.

I need to be violent, but I’m frail.

I slowly follow his voice to the kitchen.

I empty the cabinet housing my prescriptions.

I pour a glass of wine, and

grab and handful of pills.

He said that after this, he’ll leave

and I’ll finally heal.

I get comfortable on the couch and

play a Lady Antebellum song.

I’ll just sing along ’til nothing hurts anymore.

There will be no dreams, or headaches,

unwarranted outbursts, and sweaty handshakes.

I will no longer feel lonely, frightened,

and unloved. No more paranoia, heartache,

or feeling misunderstood.

No more being called “crazy.”

I was found dead three days later at 4:24.

Author Biography

When she isn’t writing, painting, or experimenting in her kitchen, Frida R. can be found pranking her far too trusting boyfriend and subsequently begging for forgiveness after she’s laughed herself to into a tear-filled ab workout.

By the time she’d graduated the fifth grade, Frida knew she would grow up to become a writer after having authored several short stories, songs, and stacks of unsent hate mail to her older brother for picking on her and messing with her toys.

Four years of writing for small blogs and a local women’s magazine led Frida to climb a freelance writer’s Mt. Everest by getting herself published by The Huffington Post just a few months after they’d rejected her first submission.

Today, female empowerment drives Frida’s work. Recklessly raw and unfiltered, she speaks on her struggles with love, depression, suicidal thoughts, and learning to fight for herself. In her debut novel, “Blossom’s Wine Bar”, Her agenda is clear: Frida R. fights dirty and hates living in a world where hardworking women are told they aren’t good enough, victims remain victims, and mental health is overlooked.

Although, she writes about the darkness we all get trapped in, Frida R. includes not false hope and fluff, but proof of a light that shines at the end of the tunnel.

Mrs. N Answers Readers’/Followers’ Questions on #Writing, #SpreadtheLight and More! #books

Author Interview graphic

I had the opportunity to sit down and answer some questions from readers just like you the other day. I love answering questions so if you have any questions for either myself of Mr. N, ask below in the comments and we’d be happy to answer them.

Who exactly is N.N. Light? In other words, what is the essence of the name?

N.N. Light is the pen name of myself and my husband. Both of our first names start with the letter ‘N’ and we’re commonly known as Mr. N and Mrs. N. The last name Light refers to our motto: spread the Light.

Your motto is “Spread the Light.” What is the concept behind the phrase?

When we were writing our debut novel, Princess of the Light, the phrase came from our main character’s, Mary, thoughts. We realized that ‘Spread the Light’ is an easy phrase to remember and sums up how we feel. Everyone has Light inside them, regardless of their spiritual beliefs and/or ideals. The simple act of spreading the Light is showering others in love, kindness and respect. It doesn’t matter to us about race, creed, sexual orientation or status; every person matters and everyone deserves kindness.

What motivated the two of you to launch the Princess of the Light website?

We just finished writing/editing Princess of the Light and knew we needed a platform to publish our book. So, I (Mrs. N) started a blog. That was back in 2013 with one follower and now four years later, we have the social media reach of over 45 million. It’s been (and continues to be) a huge success. People love the name of the blog and how we are authors as well as book promoters/marketers.

What is site about and what does it have to offer?

The POTL blog is three-fold: an author blog, a book blog to promote books/authors and an inspirational thought blog. On the blog, we talk about our own books and what we’re writing. Followers of our writing can get the scoop on what we’re working on first.

We also run a book marketing business called N. N. Light Author Promotions from the POTL Blog. We promote authors from all walks of life and the books they write. We’re an affordable marketing firm that caters to the modern author, especially indie authors.

Finally, every weekday morning, people can get inspired by reading Mrs. N’s inspirational thought of the day. I started it back in 2014 as a spin-off from Princess of the Light. It blossomed into a way for us to spread the Light around the world. It’s become a part of our author brand and we couldn’t be happier. It’s so popular, in fact, that we’re publishing a collection of our inspirational thoughts this Fall.

Readers, writers and anyone enjoy what we have to offer on the POTL Blog because we’re diverse and offer something for everyone.

Tell us what inspired, Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year.

Thirteen years ago, Mr. N proposed to me (February 14, 2004). During our engagement, he worked 18+ hours a day as a fine-dining chef in a very popular restaurant. I barely saw him and when I did, he was exhausted. On his daily commute to and from the restaurant, he wrote me a poem. Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year is the compilation of those poems. It shows through heart-felt words our love bloom and grow as we prepared to get married. There’s no filter and the emotions portrayed are 100% real. As one reviewer wrote, “It’s a modern-day courtship and I loved it.”

Describe the feeling of being best-selling authors.

Honestly, it’s a dream come true. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamt of writing stories and holding them in my hand. It wasn’t until we published Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year that we started getting noticed. Our book of poetry shot up the bestselling lists on Amazon for poetry and love poetry. People really responded to it and that made us feel good.

Do you have any upcoming projects?

Yes, we’re in the editing/publishing phase of our upcoming book of inspirational thoughts. It’s a motivational thought a day for the whole year.

We’re also in the middle of writing the Princess of the Light sequel. It’s darker and plenty more action than the first one. We’re loving where the story is going.

Follow the blog and/or sign up for our newsletter to get the latest information.

Finally, tell readers why Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year is a must buy.

Every person on this Earth wants to love and be loved in return. Every time we share our love story, people swoon and say, “That’s so romantic.” So, we wrote Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year to encourage men and women to share their feelings with each other. If you’re looking for simple yet honest words of love, amidst life’s rocky terrain, pick up Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year.

Wedding Season is Almost Here and Love #Poetry is in Bloom! #poems #ASMSG #IARTG

POL wedding

The wedding season is almost upon us and love is in the air. The bride and groom (bride/bride or groom/groom) are tending to last minute details while the guests are scrambling to find the perfect gift. I love this time of the year not for the wedding event per se but for the celebration of lifelong love. The marriage vows, not the wedding, are what matters.

What do the vows have to do with it? The vows a couple makes in front of friends, family, complete strangers and the Universe bind their love, devotion and commitment. The vows are the expression of their love, in poetry form.

On our wedding day, MR N and I agreed to write out our own vows. We wanted to express to our guests that we were committed to each other and that our unconditional love would last. This is the vow MR N recited:

On my wedding day, I’m honored to be here

In front of friends, family and God, with my soul mate by my side.

I often thought I’d walk the long road of life alone.

I was ready to give up on love, then the miracle happened, you came back to me.

Joelle, you’re my beautiful angel.

I’m so lucky and blessed this day, I’m marrying the girl of my dreams.

My heart’s beating so fast, I’m so full of love for you.

You’re my best friend, my soul mate, my life partner, for now and eternity.

I just want to thank you for being mine.

And thank God for letting me have this, my perfect dream come true.

You, Joelle, as my wife.

I love you.

Heart-felt words straight from one groom’s soul to his beloved bride. I’m sure many brides are emotional at their wedding but hearing those words come from the man I love, yup, I totally cried. But that’s okay, for they were tears of overflowing love; I just couldn’t hold it in.

Poetry, especially love poetry, is nothing more than emotions on a page. Poems don’t have to follow certain rules or format, just honest. So, go ahead and write down a poem to the one you love.

A toast to all the wedding couples:

May your love bind you, protect you, strengthen you

All the days of your lives.

Be your beloved’s partner in everything you do.

Love them with respect and honor.

Never go to bed angry.

Talk out everything and be honest yet caring.

Use your words to uplift but never tear down.

Accept your lover’s quirks and see the beauty within.

Walk this life together, holding hands, and nothing can separate you.

Need a wedding gift? Consider our collection of love poetry. It’s a modern-day courtship and 100% true.

Listen to Your Body and Take Care of Yourself! #WednesdayWisdom #Love #Health

febraury-love-month-graphic

What Can I Do?

My baby is sobbing in pain

What, God, can I do?

I’m helpless

My efforts in vain

I seek to comfort

To ease her.

I love her.

Please God, take this pain from her

Put it on me

I’ll suffer all for my love.

Just please, give her comfort

I’ll do anything for my love.

© 2016 Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year by N. N. Light, All rights reserved

Do you love your body? Do you take care of it with the same passion you take care of your family?

For several years, I took advantage of my body. I didn’t take care of it and certainly didn’t love it. I put it down, spewing hateful comments and despising myself. I didn’t fuel it with the right food yet expected it to perform like a F1 race car.

Your health and taking care of yourself should be top priority. Take it from me, I know. If you take proper care of your body, it will take care of you.

MR N wrote the above poem for me as I was dealing with a really bad cold. I was sick, couldn’t sleep and was miserable. He felt helpless and wanted to make me well. These are his thoughts, his emotions, his love for my health. It was at this moment, I realized I needed to take better care of myself.

Flash-forward thirteen years. It’s Love Weekend and I’m sick with a really bad cold. I’m feeling yucky and guilty for ruining our weekend. He holds me close and whispers loving words to me. He comforts me and I let his love for my health wash over me.

I take good care of myself and my health is very important to me. Why? Because it’s important to my beloved and thus, extremely important to me. I want to live a long life, with MR N, and the only way to secure that is to take care of my body.

How do I take care of my body?

I drink 3 litres of water a day, walk 4 times a week, eat healthy portions, make sure I get at least 7 hours of sleep a night and release stress in productive ways. I listen to my body, too. When it needs to rest, I rest. When it gets ansty for a walk, I walk. When it craves a certain food or drink, I indulge. My body and I are life-long partners and we take care of each other.

Are you taking care of your body? Do you listen to your body? What are some ways you love your body? Share in the comments below.

A week ago, we were featured on Indie Publishing Group and they sat us down for an in-depth interview. We loved it and wanted to share it with you on Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom to see our latest release at a great price!

This Week’s Feature Author Interview with N. N. Light

Hi N. N. Light, welcome to the Indie Publishing Group website. Introduce yourself to us. Tell everyone who you are, where you’re from, what do you enjoy doing, hobbies and interests.

N. N. Light is the bestselling husband-wife writing team, commonly known as Mr. N and Mrs. N. Mrs. N. has been creating stories ever since she was little. Her grandfather remembers when she was two years old, she would stand at the top of the stairs and tell him a story filled with emotion (and in a language foreign to him) with her hands on her hips. Let’s just say she was a born storyteller.

We’re blissfully happy and love all things chocolate, books, music, movies, art, sports, trains, history, cooking and baking. Our mantra is to spread the Light and we talk about what that means every day on our blog.

Most of the time you can find us on Twitter (our favorite social media platform) or getting new ideas on how to spread the Light on Pinterest. We’re a proud member of ASMSG and Independent Author Network.

In addition to being authors, we’re also book promoters/reviewers, social media marketers/influencers and the owners of N. N. Light Author Promotions. We both love books, have ever since we were young. Matching up books and readers is something that gives us great pleasure.

When did you start writing and why?

Mrs. N: I’ve been writing and telling stories ever since I was little. Writing was my best friend and my confidante growing up. I poured my heart and soul into my writing and those who I let read my stories wanted more. After I graduated from college, the real world intruded and I entered the publishing world as a bookseller and bookstore manager. Writing took a backseat and it wasn’t until after I married Mr. N that I started writing my stories. He encouraged me to quit my job and write full-time. Together, we became N. N. Light.

Mr. N: It’s true, what my beloved says. After several years working as a chef in the restaurant industry, I was burned out and needed a change. A new career and higher pay meant she could concentrate on what she’s wanted most: to write and publish her stories. We work so well together that writing as a team is second nature and through the process, I discovered I had the talent for writing, too.

Which is your favorite book you have written and what gave you the idea for it?

Princess of the Light. It’s our debut novel and it’s the one closest to our hearts. Here’s the story behind it as told by Mrs. N:

Four years ago, I was out for my morning walk and I saw a homeless man sitting in front of a gas station.  I looked at him, head uplifted to the sun, and wondered what his story was.  I hadn’t seen him before and knew instantly he was different from other homeless people.  He didn’t ask for money or holdup a sign.  He walked the length of our town and avoided contact.

A voice entered my head, “What if you could help him?  Would you?  What if you were chosen to help him and others like him?”

I stopped walking and searched my heart.  After a moment, I replied aloud, “Yes, I would.”

The voice echoed in my heart, “This is what you were called to do.”

I went home that day and started writing Princess of the Light.  Every day I would see the Walking Man and as Mary would help her Walking Man, I would help mine.  I started small by smiling at him and saying “good morning”.  The simple acknowledgement didn’t seem like a big deal to me but every time I did it, his face lit up and he nodded back to me.

I soon got my husband involved and we started leaving food, clothing and blankets for him. I promised myself that when my book got published, part of the proceeds would go to helping people like the Walking Man find food, clothing and shelter.

Our book is available at Amazon and we’re keeping our promise. Part of the proceeds of Princess of the Light goes directly to food banks in order to feed the hungry and help those in need. With only 7,500 books sold, we will be able to set up a monthly endowment for the local food bank.

We’re currently writing the sequel to Princess of the Light and will fingers crossed be available in late 2017/early 2018.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

The title was pretty easy as that is what Mary is (Princess of the Light) and she’s been chosen to fight Lucifer’s army of demons and restore Light to all.

Who helped you with the cover? Or did your design it yourself? What was your inspiration for your cover design?

Our cover artist is French (Erica Petit) and she really nailed it. We wanted a powerful cover to convey the strength and badassery of Mary.

What are some of the themes of your story?

There are several themes going on in this paranormal inspirational romance.

First, there’s the calling of Mary. She’s leading a double-life and it’s imperative she balance her normal life with her Princess life. Sometimes they overlap and she must deal with whatever happens.

Second theme is the romance between Mary and Joe. While it seems like a chance meeting, it’s part of a bigger plan. Mary and Joe must overcome quite a bit and all while battling dark forces and an ex-fiancée.

Third theme is the transformation of a homeless man called The Walking Man. He’s the lost soul, tortured beyond recognition by Than (Lucifer’s second in command). When Mary and Joe decide to show kindness to The Walking Man, realization hits too close to home for Joe. Forgiveness, redemption, spiritual warfare all play their part in this story. We wanted to show readers that simple acts of kindness and understanding to those less fortunate can have a huge impact.

Have you got anything you’re working on now?

We’re working on a few projects. We’re writing the sequel to Princess of the Light. We’re writing an alternative history book (Mr. N is the pointman on this project as it’s his creation) as well as a new adult romance. We’re also putting together the sequel to our love poetry collection as well as an inspirational thought book.

If you could have any super powers what would they be?

Time travel. Both of us lost our dads when we were young and we’d give just about anything to go back in time and relive time with our dads.

Excerpt:

Our Love

Our love exists in so many ways

Even when parted I feel you

I long for your gaze

Knowing our love is true.

When in the heaven of your arms

I feel our love’s warmth surround me.

Your grace, beauty and charm

Leave me gasping breathless in serenity.

The pureness, sweetness and sincerity

Our so perfect love

Oft compels me to my knees

To thank our Lord above

For our love.

A Father’s Love: Celebrating Love Month #inspiration #love #fathers

febraury-love-month-graphic

A Father’s Love

A little girl torn from her daddy,

A daddy blocked at every turn,

An unconditional love that burned bright.

I love you daddy, she whispered into the night air.

I love you too, my angel, he whispers back.

Neither can hear the other but both smile.

Their love transcends the distance.

A woman now, she feels her daddy’s love,

Wrapping around her, protecting her.

She cannot see his ghostly face,

But knows he is with her always.

Nothing can separate them now.

The truth has set them both free.

Free to love each other as was destined.

Free to be her daddy’s angel,

Free to be her daddy, now and forever.

© 2008 N. N. Light, All rights reserved

I continue my tour through love by talking about the love between a father and a daughter. I wrote this poem back in 2008 and in it I delve into the relationship I share with my father.

A father’s love is strong and true. He guides his children to live a purposeful life, full of hard work and integrity. He’s the example of what it means to be a man.

Like yesterday, please take a moment and give your father/dad a call, text, email, etc. Three words is all it takes: I love you. Don’t delay because you never know when you’ll wake up and he’ll be gone forever. Don’t live with the regret that I live with.

my dad is my hero

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

“But that’s not what’s bothering you.” He paused. “Is it?”

She sighed.

“No,” she whispered.

“Grandpa knows best.” He patted his chest. She laid her head on his chest, curled up in a ball and wrapped her arm around him.

“Oh Grandpa…” she cried. “I’m so confused.”

He held her close as she cried. When she was done, he gave her his red handkerchief. She blew her nose before continuing.

“I love them both. Insane, isn’t it?”

He shook his head.

“It’s perfectly natural to love two men at the same time. You love Trevor for the man he is and for the life you have in the city. He’s a good man, with a good family. He can offer you security and he loves you very much.”

Sally chewed on her lower lip as she thought about Trevor.

“Jack, however, holds a special place in your heart. Always has and always will. You grew up together. He’s a brave man, willing to do anything for you, even if it means letting you go. His love for you goes beyond the here and now; he’s loved you his whole life.”

“Jack? He’s loved me all this time?” She looked up into his warm eyes.

“Of course. But his love is not in question. What about you? Do you love him?”

She furrowed her brows.

“I… I don’t know.”

“You love Trevor.” He paused. “Can you imagine spending the rest of your life with him? Have children with him? Build a life in the city with him, leaving all this behind?”

She scrunched up her face, as if in pain.

“I don’t know. I guess that’s what I have to figure out.” She sat up straight. “What do you think?”

He laughed.

“Don’t put this on me, girl. It’s not my life, not my heart. You have to choose.”

“But I can’t choose.” She stood up and started pacing back and forth.

He watched her agony for a moment before dealing the blow.

“Can you imagine life without Jack?”

Sally sucked in her breath. Pain spread throughout her whole body, as if someone punched her in the stomach.

“You’ve had Jack in your life since you were little, always depending on him and him always being there for you. What if he wasn’t there? What if he was gone forever? Could you live without him?”

She paled at the thought.

“You’re right, Jack’s been with me, through thick and thin.” She sat down next to him, hugging her knees to her chest.

“Unconditional love, like what I have with your grandma, comes along once. Both of these men love you unconditionally. You have to choose which one you want to spend your life with.”

He stood up and pulled her to her feet.

“My time is up, my child. Think about what I’ve said.” He hugged her tight.

Sally lifted her chin to let it sit on his shoulders.

“I love you so much!” She choked up. “I wish you didn’t have to go.”

He cupped her face in his big hands.

“I love you, always have and always will. I’m still alive in your heart, your memories. Follow your heart, Sally.”

Excerpt:

Joe began to go after André, but I stopped him. Longing and pride were deeply engrained in André, and he had put up a barrier against the Light trying to make its way into his heart. He wanted a heart of stone, to stop the pain.

I laid a hand on Joe’s chest and he looked at me with tears of his own. I could feel in my heart that he didn’t understand how André had become homeless. He looked utterly grief-stricken. It was almost too much for me.

I turned to watch André’s departure. I could still sense the darkness battling with the good inside his soul. You will not defeat the Light, and André will be free of you. I hoped the darkness could hear me.

A shooting pain in my forehead brought tears to my eyes. I blinked rapidly and before I knew what happened, images of André and Joey flashed in front of me.

André was dressed in a suit and was laughing with Alfred. There were about twenty people in a room and it was a birthday party for a little boy. Alfred paused as the birthday boy appeared at his side.

André bent down and ruffled the boy’s hair. “Hey there, Joey, how does it feel to be a year older?”

“It’s great, Mr. A. Did you know I’m six now?” Joey beamed.

“You are? Well, you’re almost the same age as my daughter, Katherine.”

Joe looked around. “Did you bring her today? I don’t see her, sir.”

Alfred cleared his throat and smiled sympathetically at André. “Son, she couldn’t come today.”

André sniffed and cleared his throat nervously. “Little Joey, buddy, Mr. A could really use something to drink. Could you help me find your mama?”

“Sure, Mr. A, sir. I can find her and tell you all about new friend, Ronnie. He makes the best mud pies. All the girls hate them.” Joey grabbed André’s hand and led him away.

As the vision faded, I knew that if Joe went after him, it would only make things worse. What I wasn’t prepared for was the naked pain in Joe’s eyes and being able to sense his emotions as if they were my own.

Joe was hurt that André was the Walking Man and knowing him made this all the more personal. It will happen, as the Light has planned, I wanted to say. Instead, I whispered, “Joe, I am sorry.”

Joe closed his eyes for a moment and replied in a shaky voice, “Mary, he was a friend of my father’s. I knew him. I mean, I know him.” He opened his eyes and looked past me at André walking away. “Why did you stop me?”

I dropped my hand from Joe’s chest and said, “Joe, he was embarrassed at you giving him things. We should be glad that he took them at all.”

I looked up to see two demons appear in a cloud of black behind André, dressed as teens in black leather. They pushed André and knocked the bags from his arms. The male teen shouted, “This is my park, old man! These belong to me!”

André said nothing, just shrugged and stepped back.

My head started pounding as I heard Gabriel yell, Stop! My eyes narrowed and before I even noticed he moved, Joe was halfway to André.

I screamed, “Joe, stop!”

I knew it was a demon ambush and started to run after Joe.

I had been searching for love my whole life. It took the opening up of the world via technology for me to find my soulmate. Once I laid eyes on her, at the arrivals gate, I knew I was never going to let her go. The following is a collection of poems I wrote to my angel, from our first meeting up until our wedding day. I was working crazy hours as a chef and I had a long commute. I chose my commuting time to pen her a poem each day. These poems speak of our life, our challenges and our growth together…in every aspect they speak of our love. May this book give someone the courage to let their special someone know how much they care for them and how much they mean to them. Saying I love you is a gift you can give many times a day.

Making My Baby Moan From Poetry of Love by @NNP_W_Light #poetry #romance #MFRWAuthor

Making My Baby Moan

One of my favorite things

Is making my baby moan

There are so many fun ways

To make my baby moan.

Dancing my fingers to and fro

Makes my baby moan

A flick of my tongue here and there

Makes my baby moan.

Joelle, you are my only dream

I love to make you moan

My love is pure and true

Only for you

And I love to make my baby moan.

Excerpt:

‘I’m Not Beautiful’

She says, ‘I’m Not Beautiful’

As she suffers with her cold.

What she doesn’t get is

She’s more beautiful than before.

Joelle’s beauty isn’t fleeting

Or temporary or a guise.

Her beauty is spectacular

Glowing

Flashing

My prize.

The beauty is born of an inner goddess

Her eyes radiate her beauty and character

A glimpse of her angelic soul.

I’m sorry, honey, you are beautiful

It’s impossible for you to be not

I’m marrying a beautiful woman

God’s gracious gift to me.

Excerpt:

The Glass Eyed Monster

© A. L. Butcher

The monster reaches,

To tear the poison sky.

The poet’s wife

Weeps tears of blood within her grave

A prophecy of Promethean fire.

The monster’s glittering eyes, multifaceted

Reflecting an eternal desolation.

Creatures within the steel belly,

Slaves to the god of commerce,

In the service of the damned.

A foul concrete skin

Mocks the soul of the mother of creation

Hideous spires, like claws through Heaven.

A modern monster

Born of the hand of man.

Title: Reflections: Poems, Songs and Muses

Author: Kevin Cooper

Genre: Poetry

Book Blurb: If you like poems about love and life in general and wonder about feelings of deja-vu, and dreams. Reflections may be for you.

My Review:

I love poetry because it is the purest expression of life. No two poets are alike and when Kevin Cooper asked me to review this book of poetry, I jumped at the chance.

Love, dreams and emotion are the strongest themes represented in this collection. Visually appealing, each poem resonated with me and Kevin Cooper’s poetry pulled at my heart-strings.

This book of poems is beautiful and I highly recommend it.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou #atozchallenge #bookreview

I know why the caged bird sings

Book Blurb:

Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide.

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read.

My Review:

I first read this book in high school and it changed my life. I was a shy girl and didn’t have very much self-confidence. Maya Angelou allowed me to see myself in her prose and I embraced Phenomenal Woman as my mantra.

Maya holds nothing back and if you have never read anything by her, I suggest you start with this book. You get to know who Maya is and how she overcame such adversity. Nothing could keep her down and this book will inspire you to persevere.

Writing Wednesday Workshop: Poetry

Poetry

Poetry is something that is lost in today’s technology-obsessed world.  I have always loved poetry and some of my favorite poets include Lord Byron, Emily Dickenson, Shakespeare, Jewel, Maya Angelou, Shel Silverstein and Walt Whitman.  Read the above quote from the movie, Dead Poet’s Society. Ask yourself when was the last time you wrote some poetry?

Poetry is everywhere when you think about.  Songs from the radio are really poems put to music. Rap music is poems spoken with a back beat.  Greeting cards are another form of poetry.  Poetry is everywhere and as a writer, you can create poetry too!  The great thing about poetry is that there are no rules. Some rhyme and some do not.  There is a natural flow to poetry and less is always more.

Today’s writing prompt:

Take a moment and write a poem.  It can be about anything, even the rain falling. It can be happy, sad or somewhere in between.

I wrote a poem as an example:

I stare out the window,

rain beats against the glass,

my breath catches,

a crimson cardinal stares back.

I’d love to hear what you come up with. Please share a link or the poem in the comments below.

Happy Writing!

MRS N, the Writer

Wise Wednesday Writing Tip #1

Peanuts Writing Advice

Fellow writers, I thought I would start a weekly Wednesday Writing Tip!!  I have many people coming to me asking me for advice that I know you could benefit from.  So here is today’s tip:

Don’t fear criticism

There will be people who will not like your writing.  In fact, it’s a guarantee.  There are people who don’t like my writing.  Does that stop me from writing?  Heck no!  It’s their choice to like or not like my writing.

When I get published, there will be critics who will HATE my book and will go online and publish their scathing remarks.  They may even say hurtful things about me as a writer too.

Will I cry?  Probably.  I am a woman and I have feelings.  Will I let it stop me from pursuing my dreams?

HELL NO!

Instead, I will read it and see if I can garner any truth behind it.  After all, maybe there is something that I need to improve upon.  If not, I will shrug and move on.

You are not going to please everyone.  If you start writing to please others, then you are writing for the wrong reasons.  Write from the heart and it will shine brightly for all to see! 🙂

Poem: Happy Anniversary (2013)

Nine years ago today,

in front of God and the world,

I pledged my love to you.

I meant every word

and I love you even more today!

We’ve been on so many adventures

and journeyed it together,

holding hands.

Now, we are living our dreams

and I’m blissfully happy.

Thank you for making my dreams come true

and for loving me unconditionally.

I love you with every breath I take

and here’s to 9 million more!!!!

Poem: Pain and Pleasure (2002)

Please begs my soul

Another moment soaking you in

I watch you slip away

Near breaking point

All I need is you

Neither breath nor water

Deems necessary

Pain rips my body wide open

Light exposes the darkness

Every word a dagger

A scream echos in my brain

So close to love yet so far to go

Up my eyes gaze

Real love keeps me here

Eyes close in pain

Poem: A True Friendship (2001)

Another moment passes

Truth cascades over me

Right thing to do

Urges me onward

Emotion tugs at my heart

Friendship is the ransom

Real love is the cost

I can no longer breathe

Enclosed in my own personal hell

Need release from the torment

Dry tears on my face

Sacrifice my desire for you

Honor your request

Integrity wins

Peace eludes my soul

Poem: Depression (1992)

Downward spiral

Emotions overtake me

Pain echos in my brain

Release release release

Emptiness fills my soul

Surrender screams the voices

Slash the exposed creamy texture

I wail in weakness

One body two minds

No release

Poem: What Now, My Dearest Friend (2002)

Weathered eyes sear mine

Heartache buried deep within

Any thoughts any words

Trite before they escape my lips

Near to you is what I desire

Open arms is what I offer

Warm heart compassionate spirit

My pain is your pain

Yes I carry your burden

Dear sweet friend

Ease your barrier

And let me soothe

Release yourself into my care

Feather light kisses surround you

Reach for me and I will never let go

Indeed a true friend am I

Enveloping you with my love

No please don’t shut me out

Darkness lifted as I place your hand in mine.
