“Her Protector Became His Betrayer” A Penny’s Worth @CynaMarie #bookreview #romanticsuspense

A Penny's Worth

Title: A Penny’s Worth

Author: Cynthia Austin

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Sara Conrad just about had it all, wealth, beauty, a prominent place in Las Vegas society as the owner of a popular nightclub, and a reputation that was second to none.

There was only one thing Sara failed to possess…

Her life.

That’s because it was dominated by a despicable sociopath, her husband, Ezra Silverstein, who rarely let Sara out of his sight and manipulated her every move.

Out of desperation, Sara turned to a bodyguard at her club, Max Tobias, for sanity and salvation. Before long they are on the verge of a torrid affair that threatens not only to engulf them personally but their very lives, as well.

When Silverstein catches wind of Sara and Max’s relationship, he is determined to make them pay for their betrayal. He makes it his mission to inflict a blood thirsty punishment on his beloved Sara and her romantic rescuer.

As events reach their dramatic climax, Sara is stunned to discover Max is not really a bodyguard at all. This revelation turns her entire world upside down leaving her vulnerable and unable to trust anyone, especially the man to whom she had given her heart.

Riveting. Unpredictable. Page turning.

The story of a good woman trying to survive in Sin City where Satan himself has set up camp in her own marriage, and the only man she had truly loved turned out to be a virtual stranger.

God help her.

My Review:

“He had set all the players nicely on the board, but perhaps he chose to place the wrong protector next to his Queen. The bishop has been a betrayer.”

Sara is married to Ezra, a vicious, devious bastard and he loves nothing better than to elicit pain in creative ways to those around him, especially his wife. Sara, frightened beyond belief, turns to her bodyguard, Max, for help. Their affair, while hot, threatens to expose their betrayal to Ezra. Sara is caught between her sadistic husband and her protector who is hiding secrets of his own. When Ezra vows revenge, Sara doesn’t know where to turn and is left to fend for herself. Will she survive and if so, is her life worth more than a penny?

I liked A Penny’s Worth for its damaged characters, intense drama, accurate portrayal of an abusive husband, suspenseful plot and romance. Yes romance. While the genre is romantic suspense, I would categorize it more as dark mafia romance. The grittiness of what it means to be a part of an organized crime family is the backbone of this book. Every decision Ezra, Sara and even Max make revolve around this theme.

Yes, it is a classic love triangle but Austin puts an intriguing new spin on the trope that I found refreshing. Sara is, quite surprisingly, a strong woman and in the end, her choices are a part of who she becomes. Ezra is a controlling SOB but he loves Sara in his own way. Max loves Sara, too, but his love is fraught with secrets (no spoilers here).

I found the drama a little too much to take at times. It felt like it was a soap opera (think Dynasty from back in the day) and while some drama is good, it was a little over the top.

If you’re looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, not knowing what will happen next, read this book! There’s definitely some twists I didn’t see coming.

Bella and the Beast by @izzySzyn is a Fabulous Retelling! #fairytales #BATB #erotica

BellaandBeast2

Title Bella and the Beast

Author Izzy Szyn

Genre Erotica/Romance/ Fairy Tales

Publisher Smexy and Fab

Book Blurb

You only thought you knew the story of Beauty and the Beast.

When Bella’s father runs into the woman known as the Beast, she agrees to take his place as a prisoner for the next six months. Plenty of time to get out of her pending marriage to the son of the village’s wealthiest family.

When Bella is sent a list of demands and rules, one rule stood out: DON’T FALL IN LOVE.

That seemed simple enough, for who could fall in love with a Beast?

18 + due to explicit content and language.

Excerpt

“You mean she’s real?” gasped Bella. Bella had heard tales of a woman that people in her village called The Beast. Anna Baste lived in a big house just outside of the village. She’d not been seen since the curse that disfigured her with scars. People said she was evil, sadistic, seducing young women, who claim they were tortured.

“Yes,” confirmed Maurice. “Very.”

Bella, being very curious about the rumors researched what she’d heard. She watched videos of women with other women. Instead of finding it sick and perverted, Bella thought it was erotic, finding herself wishing she could be seduced like that.

Recently her friend from school Wendi, became involved in a dominant relationship with her boss, Miss Belle. Wendi told her of the things that she was made to do with Miss Belle. Things that made Bella envious, things that she knew her friend well enough to know that Wendi loved every minute of being with Miss Belle.

“Is she going to help you?” asked Bella.

“Yes, for a price,” Maurice answered.

“How much money is she asking for?”

“It isn’t money she wants,” sighed Maurice. “She wants you.”

“If You Decide to Tell Her, That’s Up to You” Trust With Hearts by @KWilkinsauthor #romance

 TrustWithHearts

Title: Trust with Hearts

Author: Kelli A. Wilkins

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

After a bitter breakup, Sherrie Parker seeks refuge at her cousin Dave’s house in rural West Virginia. Early one morning, she runs into Dave’s other houseguest, a singer named Curtis Taylor. The last thing Sherrie wants is to share living quarters with a country music crooner – even if he is sexy, in a cowboy sort of way.

Thrown together by circumstances, Sherrie and Curtis get off to a rocky start, but soon discover they have more in common than they ever imagined. Unable to fight their growing attraction, they give in to their desires and start a sizzling summer romance.

Everything is perfect between them until Sherrie discovers that Curtis is keeping secrets from her – and his biggest secret of all will change everything. Can their newfound love survive, or will destiny keep them apart forever?

Here’s a tame excerpt from Trust with Hearts:

“I told Sherrie to work things out with you. She seemed fine with it,” Dave said as he stirred a pot of spaghetti sauce on the stove.

Curtis carried the supper dishes to the table. “Yeah, well, that sure changed fast.”

He set Sherrie’s plate close to Dave’s. The round table would fit the three of them fine, but he didn’t want to get too close to Sherrie. He didn’t need to start a new fight with her when they hadn’t finished the old one yet.

“She came down to the cottage blaming me because she couldn’t sleep. I coulda let that go, until she insulted my music… again,” he added. “Did you tell her about me?”

Dave sprinkled black pepper into the spaghetti sauce. “Of course not. All she knows is you’re staying here and working on your music. I didn’t mention anything about,” he paused and looked toward the kitchen doorway, “CJ, or the hospital. If you decide to tell her, that’s up to you.”

“I doubt that’s gonna happen, seeing how she feels about country music,” he replied as he arranged silverware next to the plates. “You know I rarely offer up opinions, Dave, but your sweet-lookin’ Yankee cousin’s—”

He stopped as he saw Sherrie standing in the doorway. “Oh Lord.”

“His Yankee cousin’s… what?”

He breathed a sigh of relief. At least Sherrie hadn’t heard him call her sweet-lookin’. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. Truth be told, Sherrie was sweet-looking.

Waves of chestnut-colored hair framed her oval face. Her almond-shaped brown eyes were draped with long lashes, she had a kissable, rosebud mouth, and from what he’d seen of her this morning, Sherrie was curvy in all the right places. Too bad she acted so moody.

He stared into her eyes for a full fifteen seconds. His piercing baby blues were capable of rendering women speechless. They had the power to charm, as well as disarm, anyone.

Sherrie shifted her gaze to the floor and he smirked. Direct eye contact had done the trick. Sherrie might have lots of fight, but she had nothing to back it up.

“Ornery,” he answered. “I was about to say ‘ornery’.”

Dave banged the wooden spoon on the edge of the pot, breaking the tension in the room. “Sher, I thought you were gonna apologize to Curtis.”

“I did, but then His Royal Majesty dismissed me.”

Curtis moved back as Sherrie strode past him and yanked the refrigerator open. She stuck her head inside and rummaged around.

He took advantage of the opportunity and admired the way her denim shorts clung to her backside. A tingle spread through his groin as he envisioned running his hands up the back of her smooth thighs. He turned his head as she took out the pitcher of sweet tea.

“What were you looking at?”

“Nothin’.” Why did he feel compelled to touch her? It must be hormones, he reasoned. The last thing he needed was to get involved with a Yankee woman who hated him on sight. He scratched his chin and chuckled. Now there was a switch. Women all over the world would pay a fortune to spend five minutes in the same room with him, and yet Sherrie despised him.

“What’s so funny?” she asked.

“Nothin’.”

“Bull.” Sherrie sat at the table and poured herself a glass of tea.

He rolled his eyes. Naturally, she had taken his seat. He wouldn’t protest. Sherrie was Dave’s cousin, and he’d been raised to respect women—even stubborn Yankee women…

Disenchanted 99 cents

Title  Disenchanted

Author  Susan Carroll

Genre  Romantic Fantasy

Publisher Random House

Book Blurb

An alluring love triangle and a daring caper unfold in this imaginative retelling of Cinderella, featuring an indomitable damsel who’s not so easily swept off her glass slippers.

At the tender age of seventeen, Ella Upton lost her innocence to a traveling minstrel, a youth with flaxen hair and a golden voice whose deep blue eyes concealed his true intentions—until it was too late. Seven years later, Ella’s stepsisters chatter about winning the affections of the dreamy Prince Florian at the royal ball, but Ella has no such illusions. Instead, her dashing best friend, Malcolm Hawkridge, persuades her with his reckless charm and wicked smile to use the occasion to steal back a magic orb from the corrupt king. But before the clock strikes midnight, Ella finds herself pursued by more than one prince—not to mention Commander Horatio Crushington, who captures her with his piercing gaze from across the crowded ballroom. Dancing through the sudden swirl of suitors, Ella feels her cheeks burning—and not solely because of the orb hidden in her gown. Has the strapping Horatio awakened long-dormant desires or is Ella finally coming to grips with her feelings for Malcolm? Only the girl who thought she’d given up on love can decide.

Excerpt

Once upon a time. . .  That is how a good story should begin or so I have been told.  These tales always seem to involve a poor, but sweet young maiden who attends a royal ball, falls in love with a charming prince and lives happily ever.

This is not my story.  While I am certainly poor enough, no one would ever describe me as sweet and our kingdom’s prince is far from charming.  When I did get a chance to go the ball, my mind was more set on burglary than falling in love and…But I am getting ahead of myself.

My story actually starts on what promised to be another ordinary day until someone came hammering at my front door with enough force to snap the ancient brass lion knocker in half.  At that moment, I was kneeling in front of the library hearth, ramming a long-handled broom up the chimney while soot sifted down over my face and hands, speckling the apron I wore over my old grey woolen gown.   Only the kerchief knotted about my head prevented my hair from becoming a shade of ash blonde.  I was in no fit state to receive callers.

When the insistent rapping continued, I shouted out, “Can someone please answer the front door?”

I knew both of my stepsisters were near at hand, entertaining one of their vapid beaux in the parlor.  But when Amy and Netta were anywhere in the vicinity of an eligible young man, they tended to become so pixified, it affected their hearing.  There was no response to my plea other than the sound of muffled giggling.

I struggled to my feet, trying to wipe my hands clean on my apron, but it was only making matters worse.  I stomped from the library, aware that I was leaving a trail of soot all along the main hall that I would be obliged to clean up later.  Just add that to the many other tasks facing me this afternoon.  The thought did nothing to improve my mood.

I flung open the door, stopping the caller in mid-rap.  “What?” I demanded.

The round florid-faced little man on the doorstep drew back in dismay at the sight of me.  He was clad in all the accoutrements of a royal herald, a blue toque with a jaunty feather perched on top of his auburn curls. I was no more pleased to see him than he was me.  If I had known the caller was a messenger from the palace, he could have rapped away until the knocker disintegrated.  I would have never opened the door.

Recovering from his initial dismay, the herald puffed out his cheeks and raised his trumpet to his lips.

“Aw, don’t do that!”  I grabbed the trumpet and wrenched it away from him, stopping him in mid-toot.

He gasped in outrage, bouncing on his toes as he tried to retrieve the trumpet, but I held it easily out of his reach.

“Miss!   I must sound the trumpet.  It is protocol.”

“You were supposed to have blown the horn before you ever knocked.”

He sank back on his heels, looking disgruntled.  “I was warned that people are unlikely to answer their doors if I sound the trumpet first.   Especially at this house, Miss Upton.”

Despite my layers of soot, the man knew who I was.  Obviously he had been warned.

“What happened to George, the herald who used to work this street?” I asked.

“He retired.”

“Surely he is a little young for that.”

“The poor man’s nerves were a wreck.  He’s gone off to join the Loyal Order of Hermits in the Red Grove Forest.   He simply couldn’t endure any more of the abuse heaped upon him, all the insults and threats, being set upon by dogs or angry cats.”  The herald directed a pointed glare at me.  “Or having pails of dirty water flung on his head.”

“I was washing the second story windows and the bucket slipped from my hand,” I protested.  “It was an accident.”

Well, almost.   It was George’s own fault for provoking me.  When I refused to come down from the ladder to take his message, he had shouted the tidings up at me, that the palace had declared a new (and exorbitant) tax on windows.   Dumping the wash water on his head had been a purely involuntary response.   Still, if I had contributed in any way to poor George becoming a hermit, I did feel a twinge of remorse.

“So what is your name?” I asked.

The new herald bowed with a great flourish, his soft round stomach doubling over his belt.  “Rhufawn Smythe, at your service, miss.”

Rhufawn?”  I chuckled.

He straightened, scowling at me.   “I am sure it is no more amusing than being called Prunella.”

Although I utterly loathed my first name, I said, “Prunella is an old family name among the Uptons.”

“So is Rhufawn among the Smythes.”  He sniffed.  “You know, I think it very unfair that we royal heralds should constantly be subjected to such mockery and abuse.  It is not our fault that the news coming from the palace is not always pleasant.   We are simply doing our duty and—”

“All right!”  I cut him off with an upraised gesture to call a truce.   “So do your duty.”

“But no trumpet,” I warned as I returned the instrument to him.

He pouted, but he attached the horn back to the loop on his belt.   Rhufawn delved into the large leather pouch which I could see was crammed with rolled parchments.  He produced one and prepared to unfurl it.

“Just give it here.” I grabbed for the parchment but the new herald was prepared this time.  His pudgy fingers clamped down, refusing to release it.

“I am supposed to read it to you.”

“I have been reading since I was three.”

“It is protocol, miss.   I have to make sure you have heard and understood the proclamation.   And you will want to hear, because I assure you it is good tidings.”

Good tidings from the palace?  That was as unlikely as the fabled cow being able to jump over the moon.

Excerpt:

“I’m going to come straight out and ask,” Heidi said, pausing from filing her nails. “Do you want a hug? We could just sit here and cry for the morning if you want? I’d deal with anyone who tried to interrupt.”

I chuckled lightly as I started the process of extracting my outer layer of clothing and readying myself for a morning of making beds and cleaning up after a bunch of strangers. “No, thanks!”

“We can find a minibar to raid if you want?”

“I don’t think so.”

“A regular-sized bar then, if you insist!”

“Did Mel message you?” I asked, pulling on the ugly grey tabard and switching my shoes for a pair of well-worn Crocs.

“Only like a thousand times,” Heidi said, swivelling to sit upright on the couch. “She told me to look out for you today. As if I don’t look out for you every day! She’s actually driving me a bit crazy. You know she had the cheek to invite me over for dinner tonight?”

“She is awful sometimes,” I said, deadpan. “What a cow.”

“But why does she think I need an invitation? Is she trying to make a point about all the times I come around without being invited? Like every Friday night for the past ten years! I’m family. Why do I suddenly need an invite?”

“Well, you’re not actually family,” I reminded her.

They’re your family, and I’m your family, so I’m related to them through you.”

“Just two small flaws to that equation,” I said flatly. “I’m not related to them or you!”

“I’m your best friend!” she said, outraged. “We’re bound by the knowledge of each other’s deepest secrets and most embarrassing moments. It’s more of a tie than blood, that is. And of course Mel and Rob are your family. You say the weirdest things sometimes. I don’t know why you insist on identifying as a poor little orphan girl.”

“I don’t!” I spluttered. Heidi stared at me, her eyebrows at odd angles. “I’m not even an orphan,” I mumbled. “I have a father somewhere.”

Heidi settled herself back into the couch. “Let’s talk about him.”

“Let’s not.” Sometimes I wished I’d never mentioned my father to Heidi. The snippets of information I’d found out about him before Mum died had played on my mind for a while, and I’d confided in Heidi at the time. I still knew little more than his name. Heidi had been more excited by the revelation than me. She’d spent time searching for him on the internet but hadn’t found out much, other than that he still lived in Australia – where my mum had met him. Heidi had wanted to get on the first plane and go track him down. The more Heidi encouraged me, the more I laughed it off as a crazy idea. After all, I’d managed perfectly well without a father for twenty-one years; why did I need one now?

Because you don’t have a mother any more, the annoying voice inside my head reminded me.

The small, warm form lay still below him. Had he killed her? No. Her ragged gasps penetrated his fear. Nicholas hadn’t meant to land so hard, but the aggravating chit deserved it. She held a gun on him and threatened to shoot!

But she was a woman, and a small one at that. He jumped off her, grabbed her arm, and hauled her to her feet.

“Let go…of…me.” She panted as she fought to catch her breath.

“Are you hurt?”

“I don’t…know. Probably. You pounced on me.” She fought to free herself.

He released her. “You had a gun.”

Miss Stevenson brushed the dirt from her bodice and skirt. “You tried to kidnap us.”

“I wasn’t kidnapping you. I was returning you and your sister to your uncle. He is worried about you.” He strode to one side of the cave and scooped up the gun lying beside the wall.

“He doesn’t care for us. His concern is how much money our marriages will bring him.” She examined her palm and winced. “We won’t go back.”

“He is your guardian.” He peered at her hands. “You cut yourself.”

She glared at him. “It’s your fault, and he’s not my guardian. I am of age.”

“Well, Miss Emily isn’t, and he wants you both. Where will your sister hide?”

“I have no idea.”

She walked away. This female who didn’t reach his shoulder actually walked away. He thought this job would be quick and easy, and he would soon be with his brother and sister with money to start repairing the crumbling estate he inherited, so he could return to the army where he belonged. Where exasperating women didn’t question his orders and answered when asked for information. He ran to catch up and grabbed her elbow. “Where are you going?”

Author Biography:

I have always liked to read and write. As a child, I created stories featuring a young girl and her horse.

I started reading historical romances when my children were babies. When my youngest daughter started school, I decided I wanted to write one. At first, to see if I could, later as a hobby, and then seeking publication. Becoming a member of the Romance Writers of America, Hearts Through History, and my local chapter, New England Chapter helped in the process.

I live in the Northeast with my husband and two adult daughters and work in my local library. When I am not reading or writing, I enjoy walking, dancing, and spending time at the beach. I am the one under the umbrella, wearing a hat, sunglasses, and tee shirt over my bathing suit. I have my English and Irish ancestry to thank for my white skin that burns easily.

Excerpt:

Again, he would have taken the words at face value, but he was watching extra carefully and caught the slight flexing of her right hand. Those concert pianist length fingers curled into a ball, and her arm twitched. Her fist fractionally lifted from where it had been resting against her side.

Pretty sure she was about to hit him, his instincts roared into life. Animalistic reflex, his brain certainly wasn’t involved, had him acting in a way that was both uncharacteristic and spectacularly ill-advised.

He grabbed her fisted hand, held it securely as their gazes locked in silent battle. Suddenly, those honeycomb eyes of hers widened and seemed to flare with a flash of unexpected heat. His mind stuttered at the lusty gleam. His brain emptied as his blood flow instantly rerouted to his groin.

The next thing he knew, she was in his arms, their bodies pressed tightly together. He didn’t remember moving. Hadn’t seen her move either but they were wrapped around each other. Who initiated the kiss ceased to matter as their mouths pressed together. The feel of their lips moving hungrily against each other was overwhelming.

He wasn’t sure how long they stood there devouring each other. Licking, nibbling, and sucking at each other’s mouth. It took time for him to become aware of his internal alarm. It started as a low buzz that turned into an insistent squawking until it finally pulled him back to reason.

He could no longer ignore the fact he’d stepped over the line.

Riding hard on the heels of that thought came the knowledge he was committing professional suicide. Breathing hard, he dropped his arms. His right hand had been buried in her hair at the back of her head and the left had held her torso firmly against him. Taking a step back, he added another for good measure.

Michaela leaned against the doorjamb, her own breathing sounded unsteady. Her fingers rising to press against swollen lips. Lips that trembled slightly.

Yet, when she spoke her tone was more bemused than upset, “What was that for?”

“I don’t know,” his shoulders shifted. He didn’t want to admit he felt just as confused as she sounded. “It seemed a better idea than punching you or allowing you to punch me.”

The lines in her forehead deepened as she appeared to carefully weigh his words, “You were wrong.” With that stark announcement, she shut the door, and this time he felt relief as it closed.

Excerpt —

Autumn climbed the stairs to the dusty attic.  No trepidation followed her. Since she’d moved into the house, she’d planned an excursion into its past.  For some reason, her irritating spook had been absent this morning.  She had to admit that she missed having her coffee poured and a nice good morning greeting when she forced her eyes open, but she was now on an adventure that she’d rather not share.

She rambled around, stirring up a cloud of centuries old dust, and in the corner she found a lovely old leather trunk with the brass lock open.  Cautiously because of its age, she lifted the top and gazed at a stack of women’s clothing, surprisingly intact.  With careful fingers, she lifted a beautiful dress and held it up to her. The billowed sleeves were short and a shawl collar finished the bodice.  Strings of pearls tucked the emerald overskirt over a beige embroidered underskirt.  If she weren’t afraid of damaging the garment, she was sure she could fit into it.  The full skirt would accommodate her hips and the tiny waist looked as if it would close around her. The romantic she chained deep inside warmed her. What would it have been like to have lived in that elegant time?

In an age of smart phones and tablets, she stood for a moment contemplating the past.  The temptation was almost too much for her, but she’d started to fold the dress back into its resting place when a hand landed on her shoulder.

Sib’s voice was soft and tender. “The dress belonged to my mother.  She wore it at a ball before the war.  It appears to be in passable condition. Why don’t you try it on?  I’ve imagined you so attired.”

“I’m a Northerner, remember? I’m surprised you offer your mother’s gown to me.” She turned, the green frock draped over her arm. “Where have you been anyway?”

“Here. All the time. I was simply playing along with your game of asking for my disappearance.”

She stiffened. “Don’t play games with me.  My mother used to do that. It was disturbing and hurtful to a child.”

“You reveal more of yourself every moment, and I’m enjoying getting to know you.  Very well, I’ll share something about me.  My father—what do you call it today?—cheated on my mother. More than once.. I’d hear her crying at night. Thus, I would have been true to my wife.” Eyes sad, he nodded at the dress.  “I’d like to see you in that, Autumn.  We are becoming friends. She would have approved.  I’ll assist with the buttons.”

“Turn your back. I’ll have to get undressed.” She motioned at him. “I’ve no desire for a ghost to see me in my bra and panties.”

He chuckled, his big grin enticing. “Such modesty. Actually, I was anticipating that view.  Anyway, I’ve seen you in your underwear before.”

“You Peeping Tom!” She accused, shaking a fist at him.  “Will I have no privacy? Do you follow me to the bathroom, too?”

“No, Ma’am.”  He shook his head, his hair moving in soft waves.  “I was simply in my bedroom when you changed into your nightgown.”

“It’s not your bedroom. This is my house, and don’t you forget it.” She glared at him.

He snapped a smart military salute. “Yes, commander.”

Not All Dark Heroes Are Bad Boys… Luc (Men of Honor, Book 2) by @LiviaQuinn #romance #books

Luc MOH

Not all tall, dark and dangerous heroes are bad boys…

As romance readers, we always hear about the dark heroes, the bad boys, the tortured souls. But what about that guy who fairly shines from within with his easy-going nature, whose values of integrity and honor are so deeply engrained that it isn’t reflected as ego or ulterior motives. This is Luc, the hero of his own book, Luc, Men of Honor, book 2, just released. Luc is one of my favorite heroes in my books. I hope you love him, too.

Title: Luc, Men of Honor, book 2

Author: Livia Quinn

Genre: Contemporary Military Romance

Blurb:

Was he a hero, or a pretender?

The first time Delilah Burke saw Luc was at the crime scene, and she assumed he was a certain type¾tall, dark and dangerous, and a criminal—because he looked the part. She’d been wrong. But since he was dressed like a mercenary and appeared to be aiming his gun at another man and the cashier, how was she to know? Under the circumstances a careful cop doesn’t presume or assume. Del had followed protocol.

Luc relaxed as the cop’s boot pressed him down on the grimy floor of the small grocery. But then her cornflower blue eyes peered upside down into his and his stomach lurched. She’d eventually figure out he wasn’t the perp and instead had thwarted the robbery. As he watched the intriguingly beautiful cop command those around her, he decided she was just what he’d been looking for. But Luc’s part-time job required some unusual costumes and equipment. When she found out he was neither a criminal or a hero, would she listen to his proposition?

With each day that passes, Del finds the former Naval officer to be almost too good to be true. Then trouble arrives from Luc’s past and Del faces a choice¾believe the evidence against him, or trust her heart.

For this week only, the first book in the series, Ridge, Men of Honor will be $0.99 10/1-10/8

Excerpt:

Luc ran his hand through his hair. He’d be glad when this shoot was over. He clomped down the hallway in the heavy boots to his dressing room.

“Lu-uc,” Mercy whined, “we could practice during the break.” The damn woman had followed him to the wardrobe room. He sighed. This particular shoot had taken twice as long as others for Roger. He didn’t want the photographer thinking he couldn’t do his job. He was afraid it was going to come to embarrassing the woman—if that was even possible. Who would believe him if he said he didn’t want the attentions of a woman with Mercy’s looks and sex appeal?

Mercy’s antics were getting to him more today. And it was Delilah Burke’s fault. Delilah. Her name suited her. He’d only gotten a hint of her beauty in that uniform, but…

“Damn it, Mercy.” He’d been trying to get into the wardrobe room, but when the hall emptied she’d twined her arms around his neck from behind and pushed herself against him, rubbing his back with her hard…fake…breasts. With his cheek pressed against the door, he ran through his options.

Luc knew enough women that some might consider him an expert. He appreciated and respected them too much to ever use force against one. But Mercy Love was unlike any of the other women in his life, and he was getting desperate. She had him in an awkward position, and she knew it. If she persisted, the only way he’d be able to get her off of him was to toss her against the opposite wall. Then she’d make a scene and accuse him of using his superior strength and size to assault her. He’d heard about her from a friend over at Victor Films. She was trouble. This would be his last shoot with her if he had anything to do with it. “If you don’t leave me be…”

“Oh, shut up, Luc. You’ve been making eyes at me, rubbin’ that hard body against mine. I know you want this.” Her hand moved down to cup his groin.

He reached down and grabbed her wrist. “Enough. I mean it.”

She ignored him, grinding her pelvis against his butt. “Oooh, the big man wants me to beg. Pleeaase, Luc. I can have you begging for it in just ten minutes. Give me a chance, please,” her voice whined and her other hand roamed.

The bitch was too much. “I’m. Not. Interested.” He spun her around and crossed his arms over her chest, his only option, but a big mistake.  Now his groin was taking the abuse, and much as he was becoming disgusted with himself, he was aware that only a dead man would be able to remain unaffected by her antics. He was stronger than her, though. He should be able to end this somehow.

“Uh, excuse me. Do you know where I might find Luc Larue?”

Luc stilled. But Mercy was good on the fly. She jerked a hand free and then it was in his hair. “Luc, honey. I know you want me bad, but a ten-minute break just isn’t enough time to do a girl justice. Let me go freshen up and we’ll take this up after the shoot.”

Luc released her wrist and all five-nine of lusciousness slithered away. Like a snake in Regency clothing.

Delilah Burke stood in the hallway in her cop uniform staring first at the woman flouncing away and humming. Then she turned narrowed eyes on him.

“Well. That was certainly…”

“Shocking?” Luc asked, resigned.

“Entertaining,” she said.

“Embarrassing,” he said.

She raised one eyebrow. “I’m not embarrassed.”

Luc, Men of Honor book 2, was previously published as Hard Days Knight but the series has been rebranded to better focus on the heroes and heroines commitment to country and community.

The Maxwell Fought to Hold Caerlaverock – Their Enemies Had to Destroy It @RuthACasie #books

caerlaverock-castle-aerial

“It pulls at my heart with its beauty and purpose. It represents all I hold dear in a person, if that’s possible, heart, soul and strength.”    Laura Reynolds, The Maxwell Ghost

I knew I found the right setting for my medieval ghost story when I saw a picture of Caerlaverock Castle.

Reading Caerlaverock’s history I understood why the Maxwell family fought to hold it and why their enemies had to destroy it.

Caerlaverock Castle is a moated castle on the southern coast of Scotland in the Dumfries.  The unique equilateral triangular design and beauty of the castle, from the way it’s sited to its rich history, made Caerlaverock the perfect setting for my stories, The Maxwell Ghost and The Highlander’s English Woman.

There were several original fortifications that preceded the current castle, a Roman fort on Ward Law Hill and a British hill fort that was used until 950.

The earliest mention of Caerlaverock is the 1160s, when the lands were granted to the monks of Holm Cultram Abbey. Sixty years later, in 1220 the lands were granted to Sir John Maxwell by Alexander II of Scotland.

The Maxwell family has owned the Caerlaverock Castle ever since, but not without some intrigue and adventure. The clan leader changed allegiances from Scotland to England several times which resulted in sieges, destruction and rebuilding.

John Maxwell began construction of the first castle at Caerlaverock. A traditional square design with a moat and a north facing bridge, the building was one of the earliest stone castles built in Scotland. Archeologists believe that this castle was never completed when it was abandoned. This castle was built close to the Solway Firth. Built on clay the wood pilings were not able to bear the weight of the structure. In addition, the structure couldn’t be kept dry or comfortable.  Today, the foundations and part of a wooden enclosure around it is all that remains.

Work began on the new castle, six hundred feet south of the abandoned structure in 1260.

Construction on the new (present) castle, on a solid rock outcropping and was completed in the 1270s. The castle’s first occupant was Herbert Maxwell, nephew of Sir John Maxwell.

castle sunset

Caerlaverock was the Maxwell family’s stronghold from the 13th to the 17th centuries. It underwent several sieges over the centuries and was finally abandoned in 1640. The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, but retained its triangular plan.

In 1299, Maxwell forces from Caerlaverock Castle attached the English-held Lochmaben Castle. Edward I retaliated in July 1300 and attacked Caerlaverock with 87 knights and 3,000 men. Eustace Maxwell, the clan chief repelled the English several times. In the end, the garrison surrendered. King Edward was astounded that only sixty men held his army off.

Caerlaverock Castle remained in English hands until 1312 when the castle was returned to Sir Eustace Maxwell who pledged allegiance to the English king, Edward II. Later, Eustace switched his support to Robert the Bruce and the castle was unsuccessfully attacked by the English.

Because of Caerlaverock’s prime position on the England-Scottish border and the fear it could fall into the hands of the English who would have a strong command of the district, Sir Eustace dismantled the fortress, a sacrifice rewarded by Robert the Bruce.

In 1337 the castle was once again inhabited and once again the Eustace changed sides. About 1355 the castle was captured by the Scots.

The Maxwells regained Caerlaverock after the Wars of Independence in the mid-14th century. Between 1373 and 1410, Robert Maxwell rebuilt much of the castle. His efforts were continued by Robert II in the mid-15th century.

In 1567, the Maxwells supported Mary, Queen of Scots and Caerlaverock was once again under siege by the English in 1570. The Earl of Sussex led the English forces and demolished part of the castle.

In 1593, Lord John Maxwell repaired the castle for defense against the Johnstones of Annandale with whom he was feuding.

The Wars for Independence were replaced by wars of religion. In 1634, religious turmoil turned against the Catholic Maxwells. In 1640 the Protestant Covenanter army attacked Caerlaverock for thirteen weeks forcing the castle to surrender. The south wall and tower were demolished and the castle was never repaired or reoccupied.

The castle passed by inheritance to the Herries family and to the Duke of Norforlk. While currently owned by Lady Mary Mumford’s sister Baroness Herries, since 1946 the castle has been operated and managed by Historic Scotland. The castle remains the ancestral home of the Maxwell family.

If only she can convince the devilishly sexy white lion shifter traveling with her that her plan is the best option for the shifters survival…if only she were strong enough to fight the passion brewing between them.

The Lion

Decan Canter’s tribe had long since learned to co-exist with the other feline shifter tribes as they all lived in Oasis and believed in saving their race by any means necessary. Having a direct order come to him from the Assembly Leader to escort his daughter across the country, wasn’t something he’d expected, yet he respected the order and had tried his best to obey. But Nisa Reynolds was unlike any other shifter Decan had ever met, and even if it meant dying at the hands of the reputed Roman Reynolds, he had to taste her…only, having her once, was never going to be enough.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is the 7th book in the Shadow Shifters series. This book is a standalone novel that takes place 20 years after the last story. However, if you would like to read the previous books in this series, they are as follows:

Temptation Rising

Seduction’s Shift

Passion’s Prey

Shifter’s Claim

Hunger’s Mate

Primal Heat

Excerpt:

Nisa stared directly at him as she extended an arm and patted the pillow beside her.

“Leading requires a clear head. Rest works wonders for a busy mind. My Uncle Baxter used to say that to me when I was a little,” she told him.

“I’m not a child,” Decan replied.

That admission hadn’t been necessary. Nisa knew he wasn’t a child. He was a full grown shifter. One whom she was undoubtedly attracted to. She wondered if that were the reason she’d invited him to sleep beside her. No, it wasn’t. She believed in keeping her enemies, and those she hadn’t quite yet decided whether or not to trust, close.

“And yet, the rest theory, would probably still work,” she quipped. “Come on. I’ll stay on my side of the bed. I promise I don’t bite.”

That brought a chuckle from him. The sound was quick and momentarily startled her. It wasn’t until she felt the bed give beneath his weight as he sat on the other side and leaned over to remove his boots that she realized it was because she liked it.

Following her advice it only took him a few seconds, of which he used to pull his shirt over his head and lay back on the bed beside her. Nisa was surprised by how close he was. Maybe this bed was smaller than she’d thought. She attempted to roll over again, but immediately felt his arm going around her waist to pull her back against him.

When her back was spooned against his front and she was once again biting her lip at the new development, she felt the sharp nick against her neck.

“I’m not making any promises about not biting,” he whispered as his tongue licked over the spot where his lion’s teeth had scraped along her skin.

Vengeance Rules Her Life… Maggie’s Revenge by USA Today Bestseller @jacqbiggar #books #rrbc

JacquieBiggar_MaggiesRevenge_800px

Title: Maggie’s Revenge

Author: Jacquie Biggar

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Publisher: Wavefront Publishing

Book Blurb:

DEA Special Agent Maggie Holt is fierce, smart, beautiful– and in over her head.

Maggie has been working undercover 15 months when she is taken by Chinese-Mexican cartel leader, Chenglei. She tries to escape with 8 other women and is captured and brutally punished.

Adam O’Connor is angry and frustrated. It’s his fault his partner, and one-time lover, is missing and no matter how many leads he chases, they don’t bring Maggie home.

An unexpected break in the case sends Adam south to Texas. His old SEAL Team Chief, Frank Stein, offers his home and his help in the search effort.

Will these two strong men find Maggie? And will their decades old friendship be destroyed by their love for the same woman?

Pre-order the exciting continuation of the Wounded Hearts Saga today!

Excerpt:

The dust and heat beat down on Maggie and the other women in the Humvee. She glanced back the way they’d come. Dangerous as it was, they needed to find a better used road in order to hide their tracks. The goat trail they were on would lead anyone chasing straight to them.

The sun directly overhead made it hard to know which way they traveled. Every bump and rut exacerbated the wound on her side until it felt as though she was getting jabbed by a red-hot poker. She hoped it wasn’t festering, but there wasn’t much she could do about it out here.

Olga glanced at her from the driver’s seat. “You should drive, you’d be much better than me. I don’t even have a license.”

That’s right, Olga was such a commanding presence, Maggie had forgotten she’d been a child prostitute before her capture by the traffickers.

“No, you’re doing fine. I need to keep watch.” She tapped the rifle, aware of her friend’s aversion to firearms.

“What’s going to happen to us?” a woman-child asked from the back. Five women huddled on the narrow seat, the body of the young girl who’d given her life for them wrapped in a blanket on the floor at their feet.

Maggie wished she had a positive reply. Truth was, unless they found help soon, they were in as much or more danger than before. This area was overrun with warring factions from two of the most powerful cartels in Mexico. If they were found, they would die.

She forced a smile for the girl. “We’re heading for the border and then we’re going home to our families and a nice hot bath. Okay?”

The girl looked out the front window at the undulating sea of sand and something heartbreakingly sad passed over her face.

“Sure,” she said.

This is my stop during the book blitz for Ugly Beautiful Girl by Tracy Krimmer. This book blitz is organized by Lola’s Blog Tours. The book blitz runs from 27 September till 3 October. See the tour schedule here.

Ugly Beautiful GirlUgly Beautiful Girl
By Tracy Krimmer
Genre: Coming of Age/ Contemporary Romance
Age category: New Adult
Release Date: September 27, 2017

Blurb:
Nerd. Weird. Ugly. That’s me. And I don’t want it to be anymore.

Now is my time to make my mark on the world. My college roommate doesn’t make it easy. Neither does her brother, Jesse, but for completely different reasons. He makes me feel things I’ve never felt before.

Wanted. Important. Beautiful.

But we can’t be together because it isn’t real. Someone like him could never fall for someone like me. We aren’t meant to fit together.

Even if I fall apart without him.

Excerpt:

“Five more minutes, okay, Mom?” I roll to the side. My knee hits the
floor first, my hip slams into the ground, and my shoulder crashes onto
the floor. I rub my shoulder. That hurt, but thankfully I don’t think I broke
anything. What the hell is happening?
“I’m not your mommy, and you’re in my bed.”
I open my eyes and adjust my sight. Standing before me is a tall girl,
her blonde curls in a perfect symmetry around her head, falling well
beneath her shoulders. She has on more makeup than I probably even
own. I have one lipstick and an eyeliner. This girl is an entire makeup aisle.
“I’m sorry. I’m Violet,” I say as I realize who this woman is. “You must
be my roommate.” I stand and wipe my dark hair out of my face. Some of
it sticks to my cheeks, and I realize I’ve been drooling.
“Well, Violet, my name is Olivia, and the right side of the room is mine,
so I suggest you move your stuff before I move it for you. If I end up doing
it, chances are it’ll all end up on the grass outside.”
Great. When I imagined my college roommate, I hoped for someone I
could become friends with, we’d stay up late together, go to the best
parties (once I convinced myself to attend one), and maybe we’d even
have some of the same classes.
So much for that.
“Okay… When I got here the room was empty. No one had moved in
yet.”
“Yeah, well, I’m here now. And the right side of the room is mine. So
move it or lose it.”
I stand there, trying to process what is happening as she goes into the
hallway and returns with a bag and two men behind her. “This girl is Lily,
or Hydrangea, or Daisy. Whatever. She’s named after a flower. It’s not
important. This area is mine so shove her stuff to the other side and put
mine down.”
“Sure thing, Liv.” The dark-haired boy slams a clearly over packed
suitcase onto the ground.
“Hey! Be careful with that, Alex.”
“Sorry.” The boy named Alex leaves the room for a moment and comes
back in pulling a cart full of boxes.
“Hey, my name is Jesse.” The other boy, with blonde hair meeting his
shoulders, a jawline stronger than steel, and eyes as green as the lushest
grass, reaches his hand out for me. “The devil over here is my sister. I
didn’t catch your actual name.”
Olivia glares at her brother, her face turning a hundred shades of red.
She ignores him, and I step in.
“My name is Violet. Don’t call your sister the devil.”
“He can call me whatever he wants. He knows he’s an asshole.” Shock
catches in my throat as I witness this banter between siblings. I’ll never
experience this, not until much later in life, but I certainly hope Rose and
I don’t call each other names like this, even in fun.
Based on Olivia’s face, I’m not so sure this is all in fun.
“Olivia can believe what she wants. Let me give you some advice,
Violet. My sister will act like she’s the boss, but you put her in her place.
She’s harmless, despite what she may have you think. Right, Alex?”
Alex stops mid-box drop and glances up at Jesse. He raises his
eyebrows and practically takes a chunk out of his lip. “Um…”
“Alex! You’re supposed to be my boyfriend. Defend me. Tell my
brother off!” She slaps Alex on the arm, and the box drops on his foot.
“Ow!”
“Oh, please. That box has purses in it. It’s not like it’s full of books.”
She rolls her eyes and smiles.
“That’s right, Alex. We both know Olivia doesn’t read books.”
“Okay, get out.” She points to the door, her face so red now I can almost
feel the heat radiating off her. “Now! I’ll take care of this myself.”
Jesse smirks, nodding his head as he walks toward the door. He stops
for a moment before looking back at me. “Remember what I said. Don’t
let her get away with anything.”
Olivia picks her pillow up and throws it at Jesse, who ducks, sending
the pillow catapulting into the hallway. “Out!” The two walk toward the
door and she stops Alex. “Call me later.” She kisses him before slamming
the door in their faces.
Sigh. This should be fun.

What Readers Think:

“The author does a splendid job of building the internal tension as well as some wonderfully lighthearted interactions that play out perfectly and keep the reader engaged. The secondary characters are well thought out, and bring an added dimension to the setting.” – USA Today Bestselling Author Jacquie Biggar

“Great descriptive narrative, vivid dialogue that not only breathed life into the characters but provided a window into life in a tight knit countryside community. The countryside community was portrayed so positively, it even lured this committed city girl into sampling a taste of country life with a farm visit next holiday.” Ariel C.

“For a short story, this one is so well-developed and full of wonderful characters, it was a pleasure to read.” – K. Westrope

“Another wonderful story from the talented N.N.Light. Having read The Princess of the Light and thoroughly enjoyed it, I read Planting the Seeds of Love. Romantic themes are not usually my first choice for picking a story but it is very well written and a great read.” — Nathan Stone

Blurb:

Torn between two men, Sally must follow her heart and decide if love will lead her to the city or the countryside.

Twenty-Two-year-old Sally Rayton returns to the family farm she deserted four years ago to bury her grandfather. Her plan: to settle her grandfather’s estate and return to her life in the city with her boyfriend, Trevor Mattson.

Her childhood friend, Jack Smith, has other ideas.

Jack convinces Sally to transform the farm into a brewery and fulfill her grandfather’s dream while keeping the Rayton Farm in the family. Sally works side-by-side with Jack while Trevor is hundreds of miles away in the city. The more time she spends with Jack, the stronger her feelings are for him.

When Trevor shows up to propose to Sally right before Christmas and finds her in Jack’s embrace, she must make the biggest choice of her life: true love.

Excerpt:

The next morning, Sally woke to the smell of sizzling bacon. She stretched in bed before putting on her robe. She glanced at the clock. It was already eight. She looked out the window. As far as she could see, snow covered everything like a warm glittering blanket. She hugged herself.

“So, this is what it means to be in love? I like it.”

She crept down the stairs, to see what Trevor was cooking. A smile lit her face and she sat in her grandpa’s rocking chair, watching Trevor in the kitchen. He wore a green plaid robe, his hair ruffled from sleep and there was a slight pillow crease across his left cheek. He flipped pancakes while whistling a classic rock song. She hugged her knees, reveling in her domestic bliss.

“I could get used to this,” she whispered.

He turned around and grinned.

“Good morning, beautiful. Want some coffee?”

She walked into the kitchen, giggling as if it was Christmas.

“It’s like I’m dreaming, what with you here, making breakfast.”

He handed her a mug of steaming coffee. She took a sip.

“Ahh, it’s just how I take it. Heavy cream and sugar.” She took another sip.

Trevor pulled her into his embrace.

“You are a vision in white, my angel.” He kissed her senseless. Her body responded and she burned with desire. She peppered kisses along his jawline.

“I want to go back to bed,” she whispered in his ear. She raked her teeth down his ear.

He moaned.

“You drive me crazy when you do that.” His hot breath seared her neck.

“Mmm…” she whispered.

He playfully slapped her butt.

“Vixen.”

She laughed seductively.

“Now go sit at the table and wait for breakfast.” He refilled her coffee. “Tsk tsk tsk, distracting the cook.” He winked.

Excerpt:

“Frankly, I can’t figure you women out at all.”

Mars giggled.

Cute giggle. First time he’d heard her giggle. Everything about her was cute, adorable and sexy, even without any sleep and no makeup on, she was a beautiful woman.

Several minutes and two pieces of toasts later, he leaned back in his chair, and said, “Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“How old would your daughter be now?”

He watched her circle her long slim fingers around the mug, staring into the black liquid. Guilt gripped his gut. “I’m sorry, it was a cruel thing to ask.”

“No, I don’t mind. I’ve been thinking a lot about her lately…since Doc brought James home.” She stared off in the distance. “Lily would be sixteen next month, close to James’ age.”

Reaching over the table, Trebek took her hand and gave her a little comforting squeeze. He didn’t realize what he’d actually done until she looked at their hands.

Her shy grin shook his senses. Clearing his throat, he stood, “We better get back to the room.”

Strolling toward the elevator, his mind went blank. He punched the elevator button. Mars stepped inside, faced him, and touched his arm.

“You know Trebek, I didn’t think I liked you at first.”

His bewildered frowned swung to her. “Why?” Then, holding up his hand, he shook his head. “No, don’t answer…I know why.”

He grinned at her. “I can’t remember the last time a woman called me a jerk and an idiot in the span of thirty seconds.”

Mars shrugged, gritted her teeth, and said, “I did?”

“You did. And, you didn’t stop there, you said I was cold-hearted jerk‒”

“I did?”

“You did.” He chuckled, unable to take his eyes from her full lips.

She laughed.

The second their eyes linked, a beguiling magic consumed him, helpless to squelch the longing he felt for her. Positive she swayed forward, his arms circled her, closing the space between them.

Breath to breath with her, he softly brushed her lips, then gently pressed his lips to hers, pulling her closer. An unexpected chemical reaction ignited within him, demanding a response from her.

Gradually she responded, surrendering to his deep passionate kiss, shaking him.

Abruptly, he pulled away, alarmed. Quickly, he threw his hand up, nervously scratching the back of his head. What was he doing?

The elevator door opened. He waited for her to step out and without looking at her, said, “I have to call my office.” Though he wanted to run, to flee from her presence, he forced his feet to move at a casual pace.

Stomping out into the cold December day, he took in a deep breath.

What just happened? He made a pass at his dad’s girlfriend…you are an idiot. Guilt enflamed his guts. Why would he ever make a pass at his dad’s girlfriend? His jaws clenched. He wanted her, more than he wanted any woman he’d met since Jean died. What was wrong with him? Mars belonged to his dad.

Tempted by Mr. Wrong by USA Today Bestseller @jacqbiggar is Stupendous! #bookreview #romance

JacquieBiggar_TemptedByMrWrong_800

Title: Tempted by Mr. Wrong

Author: Jacquie Biggar

Genre: Romantic Suspense, Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

How can something so wrong, feel so right?

Falling for her step-brother is a mistake T.J. doesn’t want to repeat, but one look into those sapphire blue eyes and she’s ready to give him whatever he wants.

Tammy-Jo Hawthorne’s marriage was floundering, but she never expected her husband to make her the laughing stock of Magnolia.

And she definitely didn’t expect to trip over him in their front yard after he’d been murdered.

Jason McIntyre was forced out of his home and the love of his life by the man who’d haunted his nightmares for ten long years.

Now Jason’s back–and he wants revenge.

My Review:

Jason and Tammy Jo are step-siblings yet aren’t related. So, when they explored their feelings when they were about to graduate high school, why did Tammy Jo’s father kick Jason out of the house, calling him filth and other words I won’t repeat? It’s ten years later and Tammy Jo’s marriage is on the rocks and she’s become the laughing stock of her father’s country club. Talk about a bad night. But when Jason pulls up and offers her a ride home, she’s humiliated. Of all nights, he had to witness her spiral down into the mud. No really, she’s stuck up to her whatsit in southern mud with rain pelting down.

Jason’s back in town on a covert operation to bring down two men closest to Tammy Jo. Revenge is sweet, or so thinks Jason. But Jason didn’t expect murder to enter the picture and the one woman who’s stolen his heart may just be the murderer. Can Jason keep his salacious feelings for Tammy Jo at bay while he’s investigating or will he be tempted to dip into Tammy Jo’s honey pot once more?

This is the first step-brother romance I’ve read and leave it to Jacquie Biggar to make it more than just sex. There’s so many layers to this story and I loved it! First, there’s the takedown of a ponzi scheme that Jason’s investigating. Then, there’s the steamy romance between Jason and Tammy Jo. There’s the revenge Jason is seeking with his step-father (Tammy Jo’s father). Oh, plus a murder to solve and Tammy Jo to be cleared. Did I mention the touching sub-plot of how Jason’s mother is suffering from Alzheimer’s?

The suspense was spot-on and something I come to expect now from Biggar’s bestselling books. Sizzling romance with steamy love scenes, also a must in her novels, but it’s the characters that make this a five star and a must-read. I laughed, I swooned, I gasped (totally didn’t figure out the murderer until Biggar revealed it), I cried. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: Jason. I loved everything about him from his magnetic sapphire eyes to his fierce love for his mother, from his vow for revenge to his passionate forbidden love for his step-sister. He’s a broken alpha hero but Tammy Jo just might be able to put him back together again.

My Rating: 5 stars

Meet Luke Roberts from @KryssieFortune’s Submission, Secrets and the Solider #BDSM #Romance #Military

396kb KF_SubmissionSecretsandtheSoldier_coverin

Today it is my great pleasure to introduce Luke Roberts, alpha hero from Kryssie Fortune’s latest release, Submission, Secrets and the Solider. I convinced him to sit down for an interview and it was eye-opening. I know you’ll enjoy it, too. Take it away, Luke.

What is your greatest fear?

Losing Kathryn. She’s my wife and my submissive, but only behind closed doors. Her acceptance and common sense turned my life around. She’s sort of sparky if she thinks anyone’s putting me down for my scars. Honestly, she stunned me the first time she waded in on my side. The maître ‘d in De Marco’s restaurant tried to hide us away at an out of the way table. I’d have accepted it, but not my Kate. What with her threatening to have the owner revoke the restaurant’s lease and threatening him with legal action, he backed down real quick. There’s so much more to her than the shy sub I’d terrified back at the BDSM club. Chemistry sizzled between us that first night, but the night at De Marco’s, she stole my heart.

Which living person do you most admire?

Kathryn. Okay, I won’t answer that to every question. Maybe Adam Montgomery because of the things he’s setting in place to help veterans settle back into civilian life. I’ve got a lot of time for Dr. Chris Anders too. He lost part of his leg in Afghanistan, but he refused to let it get him down. He trained as a psychotherapist, and Adam’s brought him in to help vets with PTSD. He certainly helped me come to terms with everything I saw while serving my country.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

Easy. My scars. Some days, I can’t get past them. Kathryn always knows when I’m down, but I know better than to expect sympathy from her. The first time I met, her let my appearance get in the way. I walked off like a coward. The next thing I know, she thumped me in the back and told me to stop wallowing in self-pity. Her version of tough love was just what I needed. I still do really, but don’t go thinking she’s all spit and gristle. She’s kindhearted, beautiful, brave, and caring. And she’s all mine.

Which living person do you most despise?

I’m not fond of Candice anymore. I hated her reaction to my scars. When she Dear Johnned me, I thought my life was over. Eventually I discovered she’d been married for years. Her husband wasn’t into BDSM so she used me as her bit on the side. I can’t believe I was too dim to realize it. Despise is a bit strong though.

There’s this guy, Farlaise, who used to own a building company. He terrorized my Kathryn, kidnapped us, and we were lucky to escape with our lives. Him, I find real easy to despise.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

I hate when a man’s a bully, especially if his victim is a woman. I don’t hold with it, and I won’t stand by and let it happen.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Three guesses. Not that you need them. Kathryn’s everything to me. The way she goes out of her way to help people is special. When your back’s to the wall—and believe me, ours was—she’s the woman you want at your side. Everyone adores her, but the way her submissive side only surfaces for me is a delight.

When and where were you happiest?

Last Labour day. I sprang surprise after surprise on Kathryn. I’d arranged for her mom to make pirate costumes for the kids she’d coached for the parade. I had her sister design a pirate ship to sit on a float. Jared Armstrong built it, and I restored a beat-up flatbed for it to ride on. Of course, she got me back when she sprang the biggest surprise of the day on me. Better still, the whole town rallied around to make it happen. I don’t think I’ve stopped smiling since.

Where would you most like to live?

Right here in Westhorpe Ridge. It’s a small town with a great heart. No one stares at my scars. I bought the local auto shop so I have a thriving business here, and best of all, it’s Kathryn’s home town. That said, wherever she wants to live is perfect by me.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

After the IED exploded the army sent me to an American military hospital to recuperate. I thought I’d lose my leg.  I was coming to terms with the scars that run from my left eye, down my torso, and down my left leg. Then the woman I thought I’d be with forever arrived, took one look at my scars, and threw up. She left soon after that, but with hindsight, I had a lucky escape.

What is your favorite occupation?

Kissing Kathryn. Okay. Except for that. l. I like to work with my hands, and I’m a trained mechanic. Thanks to my time in the army, I can fix just about anything. If I can’t find the parts I need to fix a vehicle, then I’ll set to and make them from scratch.

Book Blurb

Luke Roberts, a former army mechanic, has a new sub. She’s shy and inexperienced, but willing. As he teaches her about sensation play, she fears he’ll really hurt her and screams her safewords at him. Her reaction causes Luke to have a flashback. Although he’s clawing his way back to normal, he suffers from PTSD. Determined to get well, he contacts a PTSD specialist in Westhorpe Ridge.

Kathryn Johnson has visited a BDSM club three times. When she hooks up with Luke Roberts, he unintentionally terrifies her. She swears off spankings and goes home to Westhorpe Ridge. The last person she expects to see there is Luke Roberts.

Circumstances force them to share an apartment. Can Luke protect her when danger threatens? Or is she just a temporary sub in residence?

Excerpt

Luke loved how Kathryn didn’t back down from him when things got tough. She’d even talked him down from a flashback. Grinning, he decided to lighten the mood. Tossing Kathryn over his shoulder, he strode toward the rock pools. He patted her butt, then spanked it once. “Your favorite Dom, huh? I like that.”

Hung head down, she beat on his back and kicked her legs in token protest but could practically feel the way her gaze fixed on his ass. Rather than beat on it, she gave it a squeeze. He repaid her with a gentle swat of his hand on her bikini bottoms. “Behave, or I’ll drape you over a rock and spank you right here, no matter what the sheriff said.”

Spine soldier straight, he marched to the pool where he’d caught the crab earlier. Letting her slide down his body, he waited until her bare feet touched the sand before grabbing her around the waist and holding her over the water. “I wonder if crabs like nibbling toes?”

She shrieked and drew her knees up to her chest. “They don’t. Really, truly, they prefer shellfish to toes.”

Laughing, he lowered her into the shallow pool, held her until she found her balance, and hastily backed off. He didn’t trust the mischievous grin on her face.

Kathryn took a step back, bent, and scooped armfuls of water toward him, soaking his T-shirt and making it cling to his pecs. Judging by her smile, she liked that. He leaped in beside her, deliberately splashing her as he landed. “This means war.”

They spent fifteen minutes laughing and soaking each other.

Finally, Kathryn held her hands up before her. “I’m done. You win. I stuck a couple of towels in my backpack. Let’s dry off and head home. I need a shower if we’re hitting Steve’s Bar tonight.”

He lifted her again. “Kick your feet in the water to rinse the sand off. I’ll carry you back to our base. Is there any of that lemonade left?”

He’d never seen anything as beautiful as the smile that lit up her face as she poured a cold drink from the flask. In military speak, this woman was PFA—pretty freaking awesome—and he’d do whatever it took to make her proud.

Once they’d dried off and finished their drinks, they packed up and strolled back toward the town. When she linked her fingers through his, his heart beat faster, warming his blood and melting the ice around his emotions. Normally, he dropped a portcullis between himself and anyone who tried to befriend him. His layers of defenses ensured he didn’t get hurt again, but his pain felt like a primed hand grenade ready to explode inside him. For the first time since the IED maimed him, he wanted to be whole.

Something about Kathryn crashed through his defenses. Her smile, perhaps. Tonight, he’d take her to Steve’s Bar and socialize with former soldiers who wouldn’t judge him. It surprised him how much he looked forward to it.

Best of all, Kathryn had told him she loved to dance, and according to Adam, the bar played rockabilly music. When Luke had been in his teens, his mom had taught him some moves. He hoped to surprise Kathryn on the dance floor—and maybe surprise her again when they came home after.

Kryssie is never seen without her kindle. She reads everything and anything she can get her hands on. When she discovered hot, sexy reads, she felt like she’d found her home. The only books she hates are the ones that end with a cliff hanger or have unhappy endings.

Kryssie tries to set her stories in places she’s explored. Hopefully, it adds color to her writing. Anything can spark a story idea. Sometimes she takes liberties though. The North Yorkshire town of Whitby is one of her favorite places. To keep the details of her imaginary town, Westhorpe Ridge consistent, she mentally shunted Whitby over the Atlantic and renamed it Westhorpe Ridge.

When not writing, Kryssie loves to walk on the beach of home town, Bridlington, or potter in her garden. Popping down to London to see her family is her favorite thing to do.

Kryssie currently has thirteen books on general release along with a boxed e-book of the first three Westhorpe Ridge stories. All her stories are M/ F or M/M/F. All are edited by publishing houses in either the UK or the USA. While her stories sizzle with sex, plot comes before bed. Life’s always an adventure going on in Kryssie’s world.

Get Swept Away – The Highlander’s English Woman by USA Today Bestseller @RuthACasie #Romance

thehighlandersenglishwoman300-1

Title: The Highlander’s English Woman

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

Laura Reynolds is in love with her long-time friend, Jamie Maxwell Collins. She adores his playful sense of humor, caring nature as well as his strong sense of family and honor.

Jamie lives across the border in Scotland. Outwardly carefree, he hides a dark secret. He can’t involve Laura in this deception. He can’t give her hope for a future together.

Laura stumbles upon Jamie’s secret. In her heart of hearts she knows Jamie is innocent. Their relationship in tatters and with no hope of reconciliation, she plays a deadly game to exonerate Jamie, she agrees to a political marriage. She has no idea the entire game has been orchestrated by her future husband, Jamie’s greatest enemy.

Excerpt:

He opened the cemetery gate and made his way to the small building where the 9th century remains of William the Brave rested. In the building was a hidden passage that led inside the castle. A dangerous place for boys to play. He and Richard prided themselves on being the only people aware these tunnels existed. Forgotten over the centuries, it had taken them weeks to clean out the debris and shore it up to make it usable.

The hair on the back of his neck stood. Someone was with him inside the cemetery. He crouched behind a tombstone. In the distance, a dark shadow proceeded along the path.

Jamie took stock of the man as he made his way to the Reynolds’ family graves. He thought at first Reeve came to pay his respect to Richard, but the form was all wrong. This shadow was bigger, more agile. The man stopped and waited. For whom? For what?

Jamie moved for a closer look. His brushed against a tombstone and knocked loose pebbles that rested on the top to the ground. In the complete silence, the cascade of stones sounded like boulders echoing in a valley.

In an easy, elegant move, the man drew his sword. No, this wasn’t Reeve. Jamie did the same.

The darkening shadows made it impossible for Jamie to identify who he fought. That didn’t stop either man. His attacker put him on the defense. Jamie retreated in a matter of seconds.

Jamie and the shadow parried and lunged. Evenly matched, neither gave signs of tiring. Several times he almost had the man, only to have him bound over an obstacle and come back for more.

Just like…

“For a moment I thought you fought like Lord Richard,” Jamie said. The man answered with a barrage of strikes.

But Jamie held his ground. He fought stroke for stroke until they came into a close battle position, the hilts of their swords locked against their chests. Clouds moved and the man’s face was revealed under the moonlight.

Jamie dropped his sword and froze. His heart pounded. The man threw his head back and laughed.

“Richard?”

The laughter subsided. Richard put his arm around Jamie and squeezed him close. “I wonder if Father has any ale? How I would love to taste it one more time.”

Whether it’s Army, Navy, Marines or Air Force, these brave men sacrifice all to serve their country and community. They also deserve love and romance. Here’s my top eight favorite military romances of all time. See if your favorite is on the list.

Ridge: Contemporary Romance, Military (Men of Honor Book 1) by Livia Quinn (Author)

He’s “the one” and everyone knows it but him… but will his mission come at too great a cost?

So, how did he wind up on stage between two cover models with a hundred women shouting, “Tucker, take it off”? That’s the question his family and friends would be asking tomorrow. That, and “Who’s Tucker?” Hopefully, he would be able to slip away without any repercussions.

The Calloways have always known what they want, and Buffy knows Ridge is ‘the one’ for her. There’s just one problem–Ridge scoffs at the notion of himself as a cover model, and Buffy can’t argue with his noble cause. She’ll have to enlist the entire romance community to make her plan work. But could this be the first time a Calloway was wrong?

Viable Threat by Julie Rowe  (Author)

Special Forces soldier and medic Walter River would give anything to snatch more than a few seconds of down time to see if he can rattle the no-nonsense and incredibly hot Dr. Lloyd he’s protecting, but dodging explosions, snipers, and student radicals who’ve unleashed a lethal bio-engineered microorganism have made that almost impossible. Maybe he’ll get a chance—if he can figure out how to keep them both alive.

The few stolen moments with her very hunky bodyguard River have been explosive, but no matter how alluring he is, she can’t afford to get distracted. Book Blurb

A trip over a mound of sand on the beach begins a journey for Diane O’Rourke and Tony Flannigan. She’s a pediatrician, a bit over weight; he has a foster care home with three children under his sheltering wing… and a dark secret. Can they overcome the past and make the future work for them? They might just find the initial trip was well worth it.

Book 6 in the series, The Beginning… Not the End

Excerpt

When I’d ventured off my veranda onto the sand not too long ago and trudged toward the secluded area where boulders formed a natural barrier, the tide was out. I rolled my terry cloth cover-up into a makeshift pillow and lowered myself to the towel. Big sunglasses covered green eyes and part of full cheeks, a floppy straw hat shaded my strawberry blond curly hair, my best feature, Mom used to say when she wasn’t nagging me about going on a diet. After lathering with sunscreen, at last I was ready to ponder my non-existent personal life and chart a different course for the future. I’d planned to contemplate my navel but the double D cups got in the way, no navel in sight.

Why bother going out in the sun; spend money on yet another swim suit guaranteed to make you look slimmer when it all came down to choices like Chocolate or tofu?  Fifty five, chubby, smart enough to become a doctor, to have a paid-up house on the beach, a. . .

Pain as all the air whooshed out of me when something fell across my body and I couldn’t breathe. “Did I hurt you? cause I was running and something moved
and well I didn’t realize someone was under the sand.”

“Oh,” I moaned and tried to get up and the sand held me down and so did he.  I opened my eyes and through the sunglasses, saw Antonio Banderas, not really the actor but he sure looked like him.

Ridge (Men of Honor, Book 1) by @LiviaQuinn #romance #militaryromance #IARTG

Ridge_MOH

The sacrifice of our service men and women humbles me. When I began researching this book I had no idea what to expect. I’d read about the twenty-two suicides a day among veterans and long waits for medical care but wondered if these reports might be exaggerated. Maybe there’d been progress. Unfortunately, the problems our troops and their families face are massive and there’s been little forward progress in the suicide rates which are probably under-reported.

I’m sure you wish you could do something to help. My hero, Ridge represents all of us, in his desire to make a difference in the lives of veterans after losing the person closest to him, his brother. Ridge is a bit stuck in this “save the world” mode and it takes a special woman to shake him up and find his own happiness.

The Men of Honor series focuses on men and women in uniform who serve in the military, law enforcement or as first responders. They put service to others above themselves. The series has been REBRANDED to reflect the FOCUS of the men and women in uniform who serve their country and communities. Ridge was previously published as Her First Knight.

Ridge is book 1 in the Men of Honor series.

He’d sacrifice all for his mission – better care for veterans. Did that include love?

Ridge Romano is an Army Ranger, has a PhD in Medbionics and is CEO of two multi-billion dollar companies. After his brother, a wounded vet, commits suicide due to a lack of prompt medical care, Ridge meets with Congress to propose a new veterans’ care consortium that will revolutionize veterans’ services. All that’s left is the big vote.

So, with such an important mission, how did he wind up on this strip bingo stage in front of a hundred women yelling, “Tucker. Take it off!” If he can just slink away before he’s recognized.

Buffy Calloway was famous on the runways of Paris, but now she’s looking for one special man to be the face of her studio. At a romance convention, she discovers Tucker, a late arrival with just the je ne sais quoi that will make her agency a success.

The Calloways have a sixth sense when it comes to that special someone, and Buffy knows Ridge is ‘the one’. There’s just one problem – he rejects the idea of himself as a cover model and Buffy can’t argue with such a noble cause. She’ll have to enlist the entire romance community to make her plan work. But could this be the first time a Calloway was wrong?

Excerpt:

Ridge felt like he was back in the Army, furtively tracking toward the room where he heard alternating bouts of laughter and then clapping. A woman with a deep smoky voice called out, “Her Lady Rogue by Claranne Braxton.”

He heard two or three feminine voices shout, “I’ve got it,” and the discouraged grumble of another, “Shoot, I got all losers.”

The smoky voice again called out, “Billionaire Sex Toy.” Ridge’s eyebrows rose and three voices sang out, “Got him,” and one cried, “Bingo!”

Ridge edged up behind two women hanging on the open door watching the action. He was taller than anyone there and when he turned his head toward the stage, he relied solely on experience and training to keep from gawking. The two men he’d shared the workout room with that morning stood on the stage, neither of them fully dressed. One was in bare feet but still had his slacks and belt on along with a t-shirt and dress shirt.

“Eric,” said Smoky Voice, who Ridge could see was a lushly built young woman in a black dress. She sat at a table near the stage, removed a chip from the bowl and said, “Please remove your tie.” Eric muffed for the crowd, twisting his hips and undoing the tie like one of those famous stripper performers. He dragged it out as the women hooted and clapped. Moving the tie back and forth, he gave a sharp thrust of his hips. Then slowly pulling the strip of silk out of the shirt collar, he swung it like a lasso and let it fly out over the heads of the women seated in front of him.

The tie dropped into a crowd of upraised hands and after a short tug of war and a lot of laughter and bawdy good-natured cheering, the victor squealed. With a satisfied grin, she looped it around her neck and raised her thumb up above her head.

The woman on the stage called out, “All right, get your cards ready! The first one is my book, Seal Team Alpha.

Several minutes and six titles later another scream went up, “Bingo!”

The bingo MC said, “Okay, since we’re short a cover model, we’ll have to do things a little different. Huey…”

“Wait! Sally,” one of the women at the door pointed at Ridge. “He’s here.” She grabbed Ridge’s arm and pushed him into the room. “Go on, you have some catching up to do.” They shoved him toward the stage.

“You’ve got the wrong guy. I’m not—” But they couldn’t hear him over the cheering and laughter.

“Tucker, Tucker, Tucker.” Who knew what the rabid spectators might do if he tried to escape? Ridge knew he hadn’t really tried to resist. The women were having a blast and the game seemed like good, clean fun, nothing he’d get arrested for.

The delight on the faces of the women made his pulse jump. Fun. God, when was the last time he’d done something just for the fun of doing it? For the kick.

One corner of his mouth turned up in a smile without his permission and the more they hooted and called to him, the wider it got until he figured, why the hel—heck not? No one knew him here. It was just harmless entertainment. A hundred women calling his name—or the AWOL Tucker’s name—and begging him to “take something off”.

He reached down, unbuckled his belt and very… slowly… slid it out of the loops.

Book Blurb:

Rev. James Turner takes his job seriously. As pastor of Lindenport Christian Church, he makes sure his congregation are spiritually fed and that their needs are met, especially during the holidays.

Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas Eve services are a mainstay to the Christian faith. At Lindenport Christian Church, it’s no different. The Thanksgiving community dinner and decorating committees have the church decked out for the holidays.

Pastor James’ faith is challenged when a beautiful female parishioner confides in him about her past, putting both and their loved ones in danger.

The magical beauty and wonder of Christmas Eve is a perfect backdrop for remembering God’s continued protection through adversity.

James nodded and took a nibble from one of the sweets he’d chosen.

“So, how can I help, Miss… I’m sorry, but I don’t know all the names of my congregation. There are many new people, but I assure you, once I do know your name, I won’t forget,” James chuckled.

“I’m sorry, Pastor Turner. I’m Jaden McAdam. I’ve been here a couple times. I’m enjoying your series on giving.”

“Thank you, but we didn’t come in my office to talk about giving, I don’t think. What has you upset?”

Jaden thought for a moment before speaking. It wasn’t easy for her to bare her soul to anyone, especially a semi-stranger. Sure, he was a pastor and more trustworthy than most, but it was still difficult. She didn’t know where to begin.

She’d moved to Acorn Hills with the hopes of starting a new life. She’d done that. Jaden was the most sought after real estate salesperson in the tri-county area. She had a beautiful condo filled with top of the line appliances and furniture. Her financial status was stable, she owed nothing but her monthly expenses. Yet, with all of this, her past cast an eerie shadow over her days and made for some sleepless nights.

James saw how difficult this was for Jaden, so he began asking questions, hoping to draw out information that would allow him to somehow help ease her burden.

“Please, tell me about yourself, Miss McAdam,” James prompted.

Jaden shrugged and sipped her coffee.

“Really, there isn’t much to tell. I moved to Acorn Hills several years ago after accepting a position with a real estate company. I took over the Lindenport office two months ago. Now, I find myself with the tag of top realtor of the area, making me one busy girl. And, please, call me Jaden.”

“Real estate must be as challenging as it is joyful. Congratulations for the title of top realtor, Jaden. It takes some years to achieve that status. You must be a real go-getter.”

Go-getter, yup, that’s me.

“Well, when you’re single and have no family, you tend to throw yourself into work.”

“How well I know that,” the pastor sighed, drained his cup, and poured another.

“Do you have relatives in the area? Is that why you moved?”

Jaden really didn’t want to play twenty questions, but she needed to talk with someone. No one knew her past or the reasons she wound up in Lindenport, not even her best friend, Adriana Zubarov.

She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and set her empty coffee mug on the tray.

“No, Pastor, I don’t have relatives in the area,” she stated, nervously picking at the purse clasp again.

“Jaden, I assure you, if you don’t want to talk, I understand. We’ll just make this a new acquaintance meeting and leave it at that. My door is always open, please know that. I’d love to have you be part of my congregation, so if you have membership questions, let me know.”

“I don’t mean to be difficult. I don’t trust too many, Pastor Turner. I know you’re a man of God and I know what we talk about won’t go farther than the walls of your office. It’s just…”

Tears fell down Jaden’s soft pink cheeks. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed.

James knelt beside her chair, placing a hand on her shoulder. He was puzzled as to what would bring this woman to such grief. He was afraid of driving her away with more questions, but if he didn’t ask, he wasn’t going to know. He grabbed a handful of tissues from the box on his desk and placed them in her hands.

“Jaden, whatever this burden you are carrying, you know you will feel better once you share it with someone. I’m here and I want to help.”

Book Trailer

Excerpt

The lady flipped her hood back, and I stopped breathing.  In her olive wool cape, she looked like a wood nymph, at once young and innocent but wise.  Dark hair curled around an oval face.  Without a trace of fear, big, beautiful eyes held my gaze.  She didn’t belong to this dim, cruel world, and I ached merely to touch her.

Her lips parted on a soft exhalation. “You’re an ang—Malak.”

If only I could return her smile, but Ragnor would slice me in half.   I was forbidden to glance at her, but couldn’t take my eyes off a vision so perfect I might have conjured her, even to the scent of the forest and rain.  A memory of Miriam assaulted me, but I was helpless to control my feelings.  Never had a woman affected me as this one did.  I felt awkward, terribly aware of my worn clothes and the wings arched behind me, yet giddy and aroused.

My eyes offered the smile my lips were forbidden.  “Yes, My Lady.”

She tilted her head to look up at me.  Her gaze drifted over my wings, my face, flicked lower.  “In the North, we have heard of the Malak singers.  What’s your name?”

I was too shocked to answer.  Like an addle-pated fool, I gaped at her, and she laughed.

“Stand aside, Gyldan.”  The giant slammed his paw against my shoulder, throwing the weight of my wings to the left, and I lost my balance.

The lady’s hand shot out to steady me.  Ragnor wedged his body between us.  I stumbled into the wall.  As I righted myself, I glimpsed an angry expression on Lady Hamlin’s face.

She stepped past Ragnor and touched my arm.  “Are you all right?”

Excitement trembled over my entire body.  “Yes, My Lady.”

“You’ll see the freaks perform tonight.”  Ragnor shot me a dark frown, gesturing for her to follow.  “Come, Lady Hamlin, I’ll guide you to your chambers.”

“Gyldan.”  The sprite grinned as she smoothed a dark curl back from her face.  “Do you know the way?”

“No, My Lady.”  I was forced to lie to save my hide.  “I have never been in this part of the castle before.”

“Off with you then.”  A graceful hand shooed me along.  “Be about your business, and I shall go about mine.”

She had brushed me off like an insect on her sleeve.   What had I expected?  That she would feel the same overwhelming attraction I felt?
