“Okay, I concede,” she said.

He smiled inwardly, the rush of victory, conquering a well-matched foe. “I knew I could persuade you.”

Her smile warmed him, he released his body from hers. In a flash, her leg flew up and hit him square in the nads, opened the door behind her, and slipped out by saying, “Brad asked me to do this. So I will do this.”

Through the purple haze of pain, he called out, “Where will you go Andy Baker?” The front door opened. “They’re hunting you,” he called.

The door slammed shut again. He smiled despite the throbbing. He liked her.

Amey Zeigler

Author Bio:

Amey Zeigler wrote her first mystery with her best friend in fourth grade. She wrote, the friend illustrated. It also had a cute boy in it with spiky hair (because that was the style back then). Not much has changed. She loves mysteries. She loves romance. She loves suspense. She loves action, adventure and comedy. But she wants it to have a happy ending.

Because she grew up moving all around the United States, Amey loves writing about different places.  In her books, she explores the whole world.

Growing up, Amey was always trying new things. She played violin, drums, flute, piano, all before she was sixteen. She also discovered she didn’t have much talent for music.

When people asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, she was afraid to tell them she wanted to be a writer because she didn’t know how to write.

She is so grateful for her Sophomore year Honor’s English teacher who gave her a star and five points (out of five!) for Voice on her personal essay. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have had enough courage to pursue writing.

In her spare time, she adopts stray furniture left on the side of the road, fixes it up and gives it a new look and home. Amey lives with her husband and three children near Austin, TX.

Dare She Rely on Her Knight to Save Them Both? The Guardian Witch by @RuthACasie #romance

TheGuardiansWitchFinal

Title: The Guardian’s Witch

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance

Book Blurb:

Dare she rely on her knight to find a way to save them both or does she trust her magic and risk exposure as a witch?

England, 1290

Lord Alex Stelton can’t resist a challenge, especially one with a prize like this: protect a castle on the Scottish border for a year, and it’s his. Desperate for land of his own, he’ll do anything to win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the rumored witch who lives there.

Feared and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she’d never marry, but she is drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.

Despite his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can’t get the alluring Lisbeth out of his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him. Realizing they’ll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.

Book Trailer:

My Review:

If I could choose to live in one century in history, it would be the 13th century. I can’t tell you what it is about that era that I love so much. All I know is that historical romances written in the 13th century are some of my all-time favorites. When I heard that Ruth A. Casie had written a historical romance with magical elements in the 13th century, I jumped in with both feet.

Lisbeth comes from a long line of healers. Everyone in the village near Glen Kirk respects her for her compassion and special knowledge of herbs and tonics, even the King of England. When the King sends her Lord Alex as Protector of Glen Kirk, little does she know that her life will be forever altered. There’s something about Lord Alex, something she can’t place her finger on, that is, until he’s mortally wounded.

Lord Alex is desperate to escape court and for a land of his own. The King gives him the coveted Glen Kirk (near the border of Scotland) along with the beautiful Lady Lisbeth as his bride. Alex groans but goes ahead with the plan. But before he can tell Lisbeth they’re married by proxy, he’s attacked and almost dies.

Lisbeth saves Alex on more than one occasion and she begins to wonder if he’s the man for her. She certainly has intoxicating dreams about him. But she’s afraid, deeply afraid of losing him like she lost her parents and brother. Can she trust Alex enough to let him into her heart and once inside, can she share her deepest secret, or will she lose him forever?

A beautiful historical romance filled with intriguing characters, a complex plot with twists and turns, magical elements and a love story that made me swoon. I loved both Alex and Lisbeth (not to mention their parents) as main characters and once again, Ruth A. Casie creates a love so deep, not even death can stop it. She reveals both of them have trust issues (as well as other personality insecurities) and that just made them all the more likable.

The plot, with all its historical details and surprises, was a pleasure to work through. Alex and Lisbeth go through a lot (and I mean a lot) of ups and downs but it all makes sense when you get to the climax. Ruth A. Casie wove quite a bit of suspense which I loved. I couldn’t turn the pages fast-enough.

I read this book in two sittings and I highly recommend it! I’m hoping the author makes this a series as I would love to hear more about Alex’s parents and his six brothers. This is one of my favorite historical romances of all time!

Favorite Character:

My favorite character is Lisbeth and here’s why: she reminds me of myself if I was in the 13th century. She’s tormented by the death of her parents, deathly afraid of letting any man into her heart, a healer who has a gentle spirit, a passionate woman and quite independent. Even when people tell her to do something (like stay inside the castle walls), she’s a tad stubborn. Now, I’m not admitting to being a healer or a witch but the essence of Lisbeth is very similar to mine. She’s an extremely likable character and I want to learn more about her parents (hint, hint Ruth A. Casie).

Favorite Quote: “She’d brought many a warrior to his knees saving their lives. He would be no exception.” ~Lisbeth

My Rating:  5+ stars

Excerpt:

The berries Lisbeth had gathered tumbled forgotten from her hands. A tremor touched her lips while the vision slammed behind her eyes. She didn’t doubt the vision’s truth. Sometimes a bright light, warm and comforting, accompanied the vision; other times the wind howled, cold and disturbing. Today, panic clearly filled the air.

She spun around trying to pinpoint a direction and abruptly stopped. Facing south, she licked her lips nervously and tasted the sweetness of fresh water. A rushing sound burst in her ears. The river. Her head snapped east toward the river path and she ran. As she careened down the narrow trail, the outstretched branches tugged at her dress, pulled off her shawl and clawed at her face and arms. She took no notice. The cadence of her footfalls beat out a mantra, not him, not him, not him. She rushed on faster, mumbling enchanted words under her breath.

She exploded out of the forest and stood on the riverbank as the bridge gave way, sending the horse and rider plunging into the angry current. Swiftly the horse surfaced and headed for shore with an empty saddle. She stood on the bank, still mumbling as she scanned the river until she glimpsed a clear red aura shining deep in its middle. Her relief was momentary when the blackness began to creep in. There wasn’t much time.

Quickly she pulled off her heavy dress and, wearing only her chemise, dove into the river. Save him was her only thought. Down she plunged kicking hard against the current. The usually clear water, now choked with mud, churned with debris. She screamed the words in her head and made her demands. In response, the current slowed and as the mud began to settle, a lifeless hand beckoned to her from below.

Unexpected Consequences Series by @KRBwrites 18+ #spanking #eroticromance #BDSM #EARTG

Arrested by Love-rev

Title Arrested by Love, Unexpected Consequences, Book 1

Author Kathryn R. Blake

Genre Spanking/Erotic Romance

Publisher Blushing Books

Book Blurb

She broke the law to catch a police officer. Only he caught her first, and then turned her over his knee.

Tiffany Morgan has been in love with Kyle Sinclair since she was ten years old. Now, eleven years later, Kyle, a patrol officer, is finding it much more difficult to maintain his distance from the irresistible and vivacious redhead who continues to invent ingenious ways to attract his interest. Though he dismissed her initial attraction to him as infatuation, as she grew-up, his own feelings of desire and protectiveness deepened. So, despite his constant struggle to resist the spirited little minx’s lures, Kyle has to finally admit that he is losing that battle–badly.

However, when Tiffany’s attention-seeking pranks escalate to the point of endangering her life, Kyle decides it is past time for him to take a much firmer hand to Miss Morgan’s deliciously rounded backside.

Kyle is a firm supporter of law and order, and a man’s rightful dominion over the woman he loves. So, to make sure Tiffany understands and accepts his mastery when it comes to her safety and well-being, Kyle lays down the law, and his hand, with loving firmness. Tiffany will learn to obey him, or else. Especially now that he’s decided she is going to be his wife.

Excerpt

He danced with both hands resting at the small of her back, and his arms encircling her waist. Not so tightly she couldn’t pull away if she wished to, and yet with enough pressure to let her know he was there and he would and could protect her if it became necessary.

Those same hands had severely spanked her a few days ago. She’d appreciated their firm strength then, but now she luxuriated in the way they rested against her, right above the area he’d thoroughly punished when he took her over his knee. His firm domination combined with his gentle handling had her panties so soaked, she was afraid she’d end up embarrassing herself.

When he’d determined their date was over, he took her home, gave her a warm and sexy kiss at the door, then, after waiting until she was safely inside, he bid her parents a good evening and left.

Even though Tiffany didn’t want to admit it aloud, she realized she’d fallen head over heels in love with Kyle the first time he’d spanked her, when she was ten. Once she realized he intended to paddle her, she’d been angry and outraged over his domineering stance and attitude. She wasn’t his little sister, and he had no right to spank her.

She’d wailed and cried, and even threatened to tell her daddy about his mistreatment of her. Except she wasn’t that badly hurt. Only her pride was. He’d cared enough to risk punishing her for having endangered her life. And even though the spanking was painful, his cuddling and reassurance afterward almost made the punishment worth it. Enough so, she’d occasionally test him to see if he’d do it again. Much to her surprise, delight, and occasional dismay over her sore backside, he’d see to it she had trouble sitting down if her actions posed a hazard to her safety or well-being.

He was a dominant alpha male, which annoyed her at times, especially when he found it necessary to lecture her. But those same protective traits attracted Tiffany to Kyle. Okay, not so much the lectures, perhaps, as his quiet strength and demonstrated ability to look after her. She’d felt the power beneath those muscles many times when he’d carried her out of harm’s way as if she weighed nothing.

True, she wasn’t exceptionally heavy, but she wasn’t a light weight by any means, either. However, it was the lengths she was willing to go to get his attention that got her into serious trouble with him.

Except, since they were dating now, Tiffany no longer had to sink to those extremes for Kyle’s attention. He gave it to her unstintingly. When they were together every bit of his attention was focused on her, as if she was the only other person in the world. It was a heady feeling, and a little embarrassing at times when he’d probe her with personal questions because she was acting bratty, cranky, or out of sorts.

In the four and half months they’d dated, he hadn’t spanked her once. Possibly because she hadn’t given him cause to. When she hurt from her period, he’d confirm with quick efficiency the reason for her snapping at him then comfort her with lots of kisses and a warm hand on her tummy to ease the cramping. It worked better than ibuprofen.

Author Biography

Though Arrested by Love is Kathryn R. Blake’s first spanking romance (a romance where the spankings actually figure into the plot), it is not the first book she has written in which the hero spanks the heroine. In fact, most of her novels have some sort of spanking in them. To date, all of her heroes are Dominant, alpha males who are extremely protective of the women they love. However, part of that protectiveness includes the desire for a certain amount of control. They do not suffer defiance or disobedience lightly. In fact, it is something they refuse to tolerate, and will take firm steps to ensure it never happens again.

Even in novels where there is an element of BDSM, the hero has no desire to cause the heroine injury, but does believe pain can be a powerful motivator. Even so, he takes no delight in hurting the woman of his heart. In fact, sometimes he finds it extremely difficult to follow through on his threats. But if the transgression is serious enough to actually endanger the heroine’s well-being or life, he will take action no matter how much it may hurt him to do so.

 A Doms Dilemma-rev

Title A Dom’s Dilemma, Unexpected Consequences, Book 2

Author Kathryn R. Blake

Genre Erotic Romance/BDSM

Publisher Blushing Books

Book Blurb

She needed his protection. Only he demanded her total honesty first.

James Evans has been a police detective for sixteen years and an active participant in the local club scene for even longer. So, at age 35, he knows what he likes, and for the last three years, he’s liked what he’s seen in Kelly Franklin. Pretty, feisty and submissive, the fact that she scurries off like a frightened rabbit every time she sees him, only intrigues him more. He would have pressed a lot harder to corner her, if she didn’t already belong to someone else. That is why, when Kyle Sinclair mentions he’s looking for a new Dom to top Kelly, Jim doesn’t hesitate to sign up for the job.

Taking his cues from Kelly, Jim quickly discovers she isn’t seeking pain and punishment the way Kyle thought. In fact, all of Kelly’s signals indicate she is scared of pain, which both puzzles Jim and brings his protective side to the fore.

As a Dom, Jim is pleased by Kelly’s open responsiveness, but as a police detective, he is determined to solve the enigma she presents. Their relationship grows even more complicated when he discovers Kelly has not only been keeping secrets from him, she has lied, and neither side of him tolerates any type of deception–ever. A point he is more than willing to make with Kelly draped butt-naked over his knee–until she finally tells him the truth.

Excerpt

Kelly realized her doubt-filled thoughts were more obvious than she thought when Jim’s determined smile evolved into a chuckle and he bent to give her a reassuring kiss. Except the brush of his firm lips against hers started a delicious tingle of desire stirring within her core, making her long for more as she clung to him.

Drawing back, he gave her a disapproving frown. “Enough of that, young lady. You’re far too tempting as it is without pressing those plump, luscious breasts of yours into my chest. Now, behave. I said we weren’t going there, and I meant it. You’re still too sore, and if you doubt my words, I’ll prove ’em to you in a way you’re not gonna like.”

She ducked her head back under his chin as an answer. She wouldn’t press for more tonight, but she’d reconsidered his invitation. If he could arouse her so strongly with a simple kiss, what would he be able to do if they had more time together?

With a hard swallow, she gathered her courage and said, “I’ve changed my mind about this weekend, Sir. I’d very much like to go home with you.”

The admission earned Kelly another sensual, drugging kiss, which ended with a firm swat on her blanketed butt. “You sorely test a man’s restraint, darlin’. I’d best get you dressed and home before I carry you off and have my wicked way with you.”

She smiled at his resolute expression as she smoothed the lines between his brow with her fingers. “I’d like that, too, Sir,” she murmured, grinning to herself when a rumbling, deep growl emanated from his throat.

But rather than scold or lecture her, he picked Kelly up, carried her over to where he’d insisted she strip, and pointed to her outfit.

“Get your clothes back on now, sub, before I decide you need another lesson in obedience. Once you’re ready, I’m seeing you home.”

Without thinking, Kelly shook her head. “That’s not necessary, Sir. I can take a cab.”

“No, Kelly. You’re mine now, and I will not have you taking public transportation when I can drive you. Especially, not this late at night.”

Not wanting to put him out of his way, she opened her mouth to protest, only to shut it when he raised a cautioning finger. “I’m warning you now, sugar. I’d best hear no objection coming outta those lovely lips of yours, unless you’re hankering for another session over my knee.”

Since she definitely didn’t want that, Kelly obediently dressed while her new Dom watched from a few feet away, his gaze openly admiring. Once she got her skirt and top on, he took her by the elbow to the entrance so she could retrieve her shoes and purse, then escorted her out to his car. A silver Lexus.

Even if it wasn’t the latest model, she considered it a most impressive set of wheels, considering he worked as a police detective. He opened the door for her and waited for her to settle before he reached in to make sure her seat belt was buckled properly. After getting in on the other side, he asked where she lived. When she told him, he said, “Know the area well. You lean back and relax, and I’ll get you home in two shakes.”

She needed a savior, he wanted a little girl. So, he made her an offer she couldn’t refuse.

After a bleak childhood in foster care, Kelly’s growing mistrust has her running away again and again. Homeless and penniless, with no relatives to harbor her and a penchant for escaping her caretakers, Kelly is finally handed over to one of the few parish orphanages remaining in existence until she turns eighteen, when she is released.

Possessing only a little money, few skills, and even fewer resources, Kelly’s attempts at job hunting end up with her prowling the streets in desperation – until a wealthy stranger makes her a proposition she is too cold and hungry to refuse. Though it isn’t until he takes her home that she realizes just what she’s gotten herself into.

Publisher’s Note: This book contains elements of power exchange, and dynamics of age-play as well as discipline. If any of these offend you, please do not purchase.

Excerpt

After they’d finished purchasing two pairs of Mary Jane’s for Kelly along with a pair of athletic shoes and patent leather pumps with straps, it was close to one thirty p.m.

“We’d best get going, or you’ll be late for your doctor’s appointment.”

Kelly tugged on Daddy’s hand. “I don’t want to go.”

He gave her a nod. “I’m fully aware of that, kitten, but I think it’s important we make sure you’re healthy, so, unfortunately, your wants and wishes in this matter don’t hold as much weight as mine.”

“Will they ever?”

Stopping, he cupped Kelly’s chin. “They count, Kelly, much more than you currently realize. I want you to be happy, and I intend to ensure you remain well. This is not a punishment. It’s a checkup.”

Kelly accepted that arguing further would only get her in trouble, so she reluctantly accompanied Daddy into a cab and then into the building where the doctor worked.

When they stepped into Reception, the nurse smiled at him. “Mr. White. How nice to see you again. Is this your new young miss?”

“Yes, this is Kelly. We have a 2:00 p.m. appointment with Dr. Kent.”

“Of course. Have a seat, and we’ll be with you in a moment.”

With his hand placed firmly at the small of Kelly’s back, Daddy led her over to the row of chairs against the wall. “Let’s take off your new winter coat, first. Then I want you to sit there.” He pointed to the chair right before her, so, after he took off her flared little girl coat, she gave a small hop and flopped into it.

“Behave,” he warned beneath his breath as he took the seat to her left and grabbed a magazine from the stack on the side table nearest him. “They have some coloring books over there if you want to color for a while.”

“Really?” she asked, not bothering to hide her distaste as she looked around. The walls were painted beige, but, spaced every few feet, were brightly colored abstracts intended to capture a child’s attention. An obvious distraction technique. See the pretty picture, honey? What do you think that is? The paintings did nothing for Kelly. Nor did the games and puzzles stacked on the round kiddie table. The overwhelming odor of alcohol and medicine reminded her of every other doctor’s office she’d visited, which only increased her unease. She wanted to leave, but it seemed that was not an option.

Daddy ignored her, so she sat swinging her legs, since the waiting room seat was too high for her feet to touch. All of them appeared higher than normal except those placed in the kids’ corner. “Why is everything is so much taller and larger in these places? Is it intentionally done to make the Littles feel small and insignificant?”

“Quiet,” he murmured. “You’re disturbing the other children.”

“They’re already disturbed,” she mumbled under her breath.

Putting the magazine down, he turned to face her. “One more comment like that, and you’ll end up over my knee.”

Kelly turned away so he wouldn’t know how much his words upset her.

He reached over and squeezed her fingers. “Are you afraid of doctors?”

“No.”

“Then, why are you so tense?”

She shrugged. “I don’t like them, but I don’t fear them, either.”

He bent his head and spoke in a soft, reassuring tone. “Dr. Kent is very gentle. He won’t hurt you.”

Kelly sighed as if it didn’t matter, but, if she had her choice, she’d run out of there as fast as she could.

As he sat down, he saw Cailyn enter. He couldn’t take his eyes from her as she threaded through the crowd toward him. He almost held his breath as he stared. The woman was utterly gorgeous. Her hair had been swept up again revealing that delicate neck, and the dress clung to every delicious curve. Finally he could see her luscious figure in detail and it had been worth the wait. With the cut of the dress revealing the tops of her shoulders, her simple elegance seemed out of place among the raucous crowd.

His guards let her through at his instruction and she climbed the platform and stood before him, her head low.

“I’m not pleased you had to be summoned, kitten,” he said, lifting his ale and keeping his eyes on her.

“I’m sure you can understand I wasn’t eager to attend, considering your plans to…” Her voice petered out, her head lifted and her eyes widened, an expression of horror seeping into her face.

Drocco frowned, confused, and then a scent hit him. A rich, luscious, sublime scent, like nothing he had smelt before. It penetrated every part of him, causing a yearning so powerful that suddenly every fiber of his being switched to high alert.

“No,” Cailyn whispered, taking a step back. “No. It can’t…”

Drocco ignored her and leaned forward, trying to decipher what he was experiencing. A fog began to swamp his mind, and the only clear thought emerging was that he needed that scent—it belonged to him. He turned his head slowly seeking it out, and then snapped back to Cailyn. It was her.

Cailyn glanced around wildly as she backed away, her whole body tense and poised to bolt.

Drocco rose slowly, every inch of him aware of every inch of her. A raw hunger developed as he took in her terrified expression, her scent blossoming into an aroma so enticing, so complex, his cock hardened to rock. At the same time, the guards behind her began to turn and look at her, their nostrils flaring.

Something snapped in Drocco.

Dr. Adam Montgomery doesn’t know he has a son. Thanks to his great-aunt’s will, he has nine months to find a bride or he loses Montgomery Hall and the fifteen million dollars she left him. Although he seduces Mandy on his first night home, he still believes she betrayed him twelve years ago. No way would he marry a woman like her.

Excerpt

The engine stopped, and she heard a car door slam. She needed out of the trunk, but no one came for her. What if they abandon the car and leave me? I don’t want to die trussed up in a car trunk. A fresh wave of fear washed through her, along with a spike of adrenaline. Her body trembled, but time slowed and her thoughts cleared. She needed to take things one step at a time.

Step one—get her arms free. She wriggled around, hoping the rough ride had dislodged something she could use to cut the rope. Bingo. Her fingers touched a metal box. Maybe it held tools or a knife. She almost wept when she couldn’t open it. The hinge stuck out from the box, so she twisted some more, running the rope against the hinge. Periodically, she stopped and tensed her wrists in an attempt to pull the nylon strands apart.

She’d no idea how long she worked at her bonds. It seemed like hours until the rope finally gave way. Relieved tears filled her eyes. Rather than rub her wrists, she tugged off the hood and pulled the gag from her mouth. She’d never been so thirsty. She’d give anything for a cold beer right now.

Step two—find the release mechanism the law said every car should have in the trunk. She felt claustrophobic, so scared she could barely move, but she forced herself to concentrate. There, in the corner, a glow-in-the-dark lever beckoned. Wriggling like a maggot in a fisherman’s box, she kicked it for all she was worth, and the trunk lid popped open.

The air smelled wonderful, if slightly musty, but silence and utter darkness surrounded her. She listened a while, decided her captors had left, and slipped out the trunk. No lights shone through the darkness. Using her hands rather than her eyes, she found a lug wrench and flashlight alongside the spare tire beneath the space she’d just escaped. She grabbed both, quietly shut the trunk, and headed into the darkness.

Kryssie Fortune

Author Biography

Kryssie is never seen without her kindle. She reads everything and anything she can get her hands on. When she discovered hot, sexy reads, she felt like she’d found her home. The only books she hates are the ones that end with a cliff hanger or have unhappy endings.

Kryssie tries to set her stories in places she’s explored. Hopefully, it adds color to her writing. Anything can spark a story idea. Sometimes she takes liberties though. The North Yorkshire town of Whitby is one of her favorite places. To keep the details of her imaginary town, Westhorpe Ridge consistent, she mentally shunted Whitby over the Atlantic and renamed it Westhorpe Ridge.

When not writing, Kryssie loves to walk on the beach of home town, Bridlington, or potter in her garden. Popping down to London to see her family is her favorite thing to do.

Kryssie currently has thirteen books on general release along with a boxed e-book of the first three Westhorpe Ridge stories. All her stories are M/ F or M/M/F. All are edited by publishing houses in either the UK or the USA. While her stories sizzle with sex, plot comes before bed. Life’s always an adventure going on in Kryssie’s world.

Excerpt

Momentarily struck dumb by his eye color, she stared back. Why hadn’t she noticed until now? Although not as light as hers or her father’s, the professor’s eyes were a startling green shade.

His hand nudged her arm. “Lacy?”

She jumped. “Oh, yes.” She slipped the tissue from the half-carved wolf. Another glance at his eyes and goose bumps riddled her arms.

He lifted the wood close to his face, using both hands as if handling a delicate hummingbird. His thumb traced the neck of the creature to the juncture of where it emerged from the wood.

When he brought the piece to his nose, closing his eyes and breathing deeply, Lacy wanted to turn away from the oddly erotic gesture.

He swallowed, opened his eyes and set the wolf back on the tissue. His attention shifted to the photograph of the chest. He touched the photo, a smile on his lips. “Where is the chest?”

The chest. Like he knew it, had seen it before. “I’m having it sent. You’ve seen it before?”

He didn’t move, stared out the window as if deep in thought. “I’d like to show you something, Lacy.”

“All right.” She waited, watching his profile.

He turned and stared into her face a moment. “You’re so very lovely. A creation full of life and passion, surpassing any art form.”

His hypnotic voice floated on the classical strains drifting from the living room. She couldn’t speak. Didn’t know what to say. She’d been lifted upon a pedestal of admiration. With any other man, she might consider his words a means to a sexual end. The professor’s intentions, however, were crystal. He admired her like a work of art.

Phoebe shuddered and stilled.

Like the aftershocks of an earthquake, trembling overtook her body. Her knees wobbled, but Mason caught her before she collapsed.

“What’s wrong?” He hugged her briefly then brought his face even with hers. “Phoebe, tell me. Why are you shaking? What’s happened?”

“Oh my God, Mason.” She spread her hands on his chest and glanced back at the bathroom. “Tell someone to call an ambulance. Hurry!”

He took a step toward the ladies’ room, but she grabbed his shirtfront. “No!” She peered around him and shouted. “Someone call nine one one.”

Mason touched his pocket. “My cell’s in the truck.” He grabbed the shoulder of a male customer, the closest person to them. “You got a cell on you?”

The man nodded and pulled a phone from his pocket.

“Call nine one one right now. There’s been…” His face questioned her.

“Someone’s badly hurt in the bathroom. Oh hell, hurry!” She thumped her palms against his chest.

The man pulled out his cell as he raced into the ladies’ room.

Phoebe wrapped her arms around Mason, tipped her chin upward, and found the words. “It’s that

waitress, Mason. Carla.”

His expression went blank, from concern for her to no comprehension.

“There’s so much blood.” She stifled a gag, the sweet, copper penny reek still heavy in her nostrils. “Her throat.” A shudder rippled the length of her body. “I think she’s dead.”

Unreasonable irritation set his jaw tight, and he shot his partner a scowl. “She’s lying.”

“She’s convincing.” True to form, Albert spoke his mind. He’d miss him when he retired.

He let his ire go with the thought. “You don’t know her well enough.” They’d reached the landing and the door into the Great Hall.

“How well do you know Eike, Tobias?”

“I know her enough to know she’s not to be trusted. To know her aspirations—”

“I trust your gut.” His partner laid a hand on his shoulder. “It felt practiced…you’re right.” Albert opened the Great Hall door. “Let’s see if we can get the nephew to tell us something more.”

Tobias led the way, glanced along the table and into the shadows at each end, then made his way around and into the main room. He jerked to a halt. “Who the hell?” He trotted to a prone figure, face down in the middle of the hall.

Albert, huffing, drew up beside him as he squatted to get a closer look.

“It’s Bauer.” Tobias put fingertips to Bauer’s neck, but the pulse wasn’t there. His hand grazed a red silk scarf. The scarf, a faint scent, and confusion washed over him. August. She’d worn a red scarf the first time he’d seen her.

“He’s dead?”

“Very.”

Jake nodded, but all he could concentrate on were Penny’s last words before the officer appeared. When they were alone again, he threw up his hands. “What do you mean, go back to Phoenix? Why the hell would I do that? My sister’s been murdered, and I want to find out why.”

She turned her back on him, went to the open door of the bathroom, and lifted her clothes from the hook. Beneath the thin, hospital gown her spine was straight, her movements tight, as if coiled and ready to spring.

“Penny, I know how much she meant to you.” How much she meant to both of them. He wanted to hold her, share their loss. “I’m not leaving you.”

Untying the gown, she let it drop around her feet, and sidestepped out of the heap. She pulled the dark gray sweater over her head then stepped into black velvet jeans. She wouldn’t make eye contact, wouldn’t speak as she sat on the green plastic chair.

This was killing him. He needed to hold her, help her with her pain—his pain. Haltingly, he made his way to her, touched her head, and waited while she zipped her boots. “Penny.” She resisted, but he tipped her chin, forcing her to look up. “Come on, baby. You don’t have to worry about me leaving you.”

“You will.”

“No—”

“When I tell you the truth, you will.”

One Week to Win Her Boss by @BarbaraWDaille and @entangledpub #holidayromance #bookreview

OWtWHB - Barbara White Daille

Title: One Week to Win Her Boss

Author: Barbara White Daille

Genre: Holiday Romance, Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

Single mom Amber Barnett loves family, kids, Christmas…and unfortunately, her boss, confirmed bachelor Michael DeFranco. It’s a crush she really needs to get over. Except, when she’s temporarily forced from her apartment, her only option is to stay at Michael’s private ski lodge, where she’s the housekeeper. No problem. Her handsome boss rarely visits Snowflake Valley unexpectedly, plus he’s spending the holidays with his family. Or so she thinks…

A stormy Christmas Eve reunion leaves Michael seeking the solitude of his lodge, where he finds Amber in residence—and in trouble. Attempting to save her from her matchmaking family, he announces they’re a couple. His good deed backfires when they’re instantly included in each and every holiday event in town. So much for solitude.

Only the more time he spends with the beautiful, cheery brunette, the more he yearns to make things real between them. But he and Amber want different things, and Michael could never be the family man she’s looking for.

My Review:

Amber’s one of the unlucky Barnett sisters. She’s got horrible instincts when it comes to men, especially her ex-husband. He left her high and dry with a baby on the way. She’s a single mom with an infant daughter and struggling to make ends meet. Forced out of her apartment temporarily, she decides to stay at the ski lodge she works as a housekeeper. She just wants some peace and quiet, not to mention a reprieve from her daughter’s colic. But all that changes when her boss, Michael DeFranco, walks in the front door and Penny starts to cry.

Tired of the nightmare that is his family, all Michael wants is the solitude of his private ski lodge. He walks in to the surprised shriek of his housekeeper and her infant baby. So much for hibernating alone. While Amber evades his questions about why she’s there, Michael’s bound and determined to get to the bottom of it. The last thing he expected to find when he came to Snowflake Valley was his very own Christmas angel. Can Amber and Penny change his feelings on family, Christmas and marriage or will he be Snowflake Valley’s own Scrooge?

I love holiday romances and this one is a gem. From the first scene, Amber and Michael are at odds with each other yet at the same time, drawn to one another. Their chemistry is sizzling no matter how hard they try to fight it. Barbara White Daille weaves a heart-wrenching story about two wounded hearts begging to be healed, all against the backdrop of a small town at Christmastime. There’s plenty of challenges they must overcome in order to be together. My favorite scene has to be the snowball fight. Hilarious! Highly recommend!

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from Entangled Publishing via Netgalley in the hopes I’d review it.

Favorite Character/Quote: “That was what he’d always found different about her. What she had brought into his life from the day he had met her. Her sparkling eyes. Her sunny smile. Her light. They kept his thoughts coming back to her no matter how hard he fought them, no matter how many times he reminded himself she was off-limits.”

My Rating: 5 stars

Leslie North
(All I Want for Christmas is…, #1)
Publication date: December 7th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

It may be cold outside, but the snow begins to melt when an unlikely couple comes together during the Holidays…

Christmas is right around the corner, but after creating a society scandal, New York heiress Melody Hascall-Ebons has nowhere to turn. Cut off by her family for running away with an actor—who turned out to be using her for publicity—Mel is penniless, homeless, and disgraced. There’s only one place to go, and that’s back to the fiancé she ditched. But instead of her ex, she finds his friend Daveed Rafik. The handsome military translator disarms Mel with his easy smile and surprising sympathy. But as she struggles to get her life on track, the last thing Mel needs is to fall into the strong arms of her ex-fiancé’s best friend.

Counter-terrorism expert Sheikh Daveed Rafik has spent his career dealing with delicate and dangerous situations, but none of them compares to Melody Hascall-Ebons. He’s supposed to be helping his friend Murphy find his missing sister, not consoling the spoiled rich girl who dumped their buddy Heath. But the more he learns about Melody, the more he likes. With her unexpected intelligence and distinctive beauty, Melody calls to him in powerful ways. But when the woman he is arranged to marry shows up, Daveed’s highly organized life suddenly gets very complicated.

The streets of New York are steeped in holiday cheer, but can Daveed and Melody thaw the ice around their hearts enough to make room for love?

He’d been one of Heath’s friends and always hanging around the periphery of their group, but had sort of kept to himself. Now, though, he’d come to her aid in her hour of need—or more like day of desperation—and a girl couldn’t ignore such chivalry.

As the silence between them grew more awkward by the second, she got up and wandered over to the table, which was covered by papers and post-it notes. Daveed didn’t look up at her at all, so she finally pulled out a chair and sat, forcing a tremulous smile. “What are you doing?”

“Huh?” Daveed glanced up at her with a frown, as if just then remembering she was still there. “Oh, making lists. It’s how I keep track of everything I’ve got going on and my responsibilities.”

“Oh.” She picked up one yellow square and squinted at this illegible scrawl before he snatched it away from her.

“Please, don’t touch anything. These are all very important.”

“Right.” She’d never been big on lists or organization herself. Her mother had always had a social secretary to take care of most things for her and when that failed, then Melody preferred to “wing it.” For her life was all about spontaneity, but then again, given how this whole situation with Jefferson Hanks had turned out, maybe planning and consideration was the way to go. While Daveed said nothing more, scowling down at his notes again, she studied him more. Honestly, she really didn’t know the guy very well.

From what Heath had told her, Daveed Rafik had served alongside him and their other friend, Murphy Coen, in the Middle East. Melody had always thought of Daveed as a sort of an Arabic James Bond type from the way Heath had bragged about the guy. He graduated Yale at the top of his class, spoke five languages fluently, and thwarted terrorists in a single bound, all without firing a single weapon.

Now, however, as he wrote furiously, his dark brows knit in concentration, she took her first real look at the guy. She’s noticed when he’d first answered the door that he was tall and well-muscled. As she sat beside him at the table, his dark brown hair curled above the collar of his white button-down shirt and reflected hints of gold beneath the lights. Yep. He was gorgeous, no doubt about it. If you went for the romance-novel cover sheikh type. Which she didn’t, at least not up to this point.

Author Bio:

Leslie North is the pen name for a critically-acclaimed author of women’s contemporary romance and fiction. The anonymity gives her the perfect opportunity to paint with her full artistic palette, especially in the romance and erotic fantasy genres.

The truth of the matter is she loves her fictional persona, Leslie North, more than her normal, day-to-day persona! Her bestselling books focus on strong characters and particularly women who aren’t afraid to challenge an alpha male. Inspired after years of travel, her stories are set all over the world, from the tough streets of Russia to the beautiful beaches of the middle east.

Leslie fell in love with romance when she first picked up a scrappy, dog-eared romance book from her local library. She began writing soon after and the rest, as they say, was history. She now lives in a cozy cottage on the British coast and enjoys taking long walks with her two Dalmatians, George and Fergie.

The House-Sitter’s Christmas: A Romantic Fairy Tale by Jean Joachim

At Christmas, Laura Fleming lived her fantasy adventure. Paid to house-sit for the fabulously wealthy financier, C.W. Banley, while he traveled, she eagerly headed for New York City. As mistress of his elegant townhouse, she baked cookies and dressed the old gent’s richly-furnished residence for the holidays.

As December rolled around, the lonely, lovely writer eagerly anticipated soaking up the Christmas atmosphere in the grand city. With only the cat for company, she’d turn Banley’s elegant home into a wonderland of sparkling lights, fragrant garland, and shiny tinsel.

Every year, she wished, in vain, for a happy ending. Will this be the year that Miss Fleming discovers her dreams can come true, even in a big city, like New York?

A sweet, New York City Christmas Fairy Tale novella.

CAUTION: As in any fairy tale, there is some violence in this story, and some cursing, as well, but no sex.

With a firm hand, the men in their lives add just the perfect amount of hot ginger to the vanilla and these five ladies soon receive an unexpected, but especially warming gift from the man in their lives. The last thing Nick wants is to spend a cozy Christmas Eve with a trio of kids and the woman who dumped him. But as much as Lyssa frustrates him, he can’t stop thinking about her. Excerpt

Movement from the bed startled her, and she turned to find Beau lying on his back, his hand pushing through his hair, those gorgeous emerald eyes blinking the sleep away. Propping himself up on his elbows, he squinted, whether from curiosity or adjusting to the dark. “Maddie?”

His scent nearly overwhelmed her. It was a mixture of his signature cologne, body heat and maybe testosterone, a gene all his own. He was so male. So big and strong with an elegance of movement that belied his size. It had made him a star without even trying. It was just… Beau.

Maddie. No one called her that but him, and mostly during their lovemaking. He seemed… vulnerable somehow, his expression open. She eased down onto the bed next to him. Her hand disobeyed and she reached out to stroke his hair back from his eyes. She wanted to look at them, at him. God, she was so hungry for him, it was a wonder her stomach didn’t growl. And yet, she steeled herself for his rejection.

His head angled and he pressed his cheek into her palm. His eyes closed. He was hot. Vic had said he’d picked up a bug. She knew he would not take kindly to coddling so she didn’t mention it. Those eyes so like the color of gems sparkled, lowered to her mouth. She licked her lips. When he didn’t move and didn’t quit staring, she leaned forward.

She couldn’t not.

Her eyes met his as their lips touched and he groaned from somewhere deep in his chest. He took the kiss deeper immediately, angling his head and scooting closer to put his weight on one arm and place his other behind her to pull her into him.

His chest pressed tight against hers, his tongue pushed into her mouth, commanding she open and give as much as she received. Always. He never did anything halfway and demanded the same. She gave herself up to the feel of him; he was so close, and it had been so long.

His hand left her neck and she almost cried out, No, but then it was slipping up under her sweater, beneath her bra to take her breast in his palm. She kissed him harder, sucked his tongue into her mouth, needing to be closer. His hand stilled suddenly and her mind cried out, No, don’t stop!

Excerpt:

Storm paced his room. Why on earth had he let Coach talk him into being Brittiany’s date? He wasn’t fit—ready—to be with normal people and do normal things. He liked his privacy and working on the ranch with little interaction with others. All he wanted out of life right now was to keep his head down and do his job while he took the time to sort out his life. Leaving the Army hadn’t been easy for him. He hadn’t expected to feel so empty, lost, and purposeless with his return to civilian life. It was like he didn’t even know how to behave in a social setting. He’d done just fine socially, before the Army.

How dare Coach play the ‘she needs protection’ card. His friend knew the second he reminded him of that, of the threats to the family, he’d easily agree to go on this date with Brittiany so that he could keep an eye on Peyton.

It just figured that Coach and his dad were in Chicago this weekend meeting with some of their development partners or Coach could be the one going on this date with Brittiany. Not that going on a date with Brittiany was a hardship—for a normal person that is—because she seemed like a nice woman, pretty too. But Storm just wasn’t feeling it. He wasn’t ready to be among the normal.

Storm stood in front of the mirror and tugged at the sleeve of his suit, Coach’s suit. He wasn’t quite sure what one wore to the country club for dinner, but he guessed it was nothing he had in his closet, so he’d raided Coach’s.

He swallowed down the anxiety in his throat, spun, and exited his room. The thump of his dress shoes against the hardwood floor echoed less than when he wore his cowboy boots. But even with the noise, he still preferred the boots.

At the foot of the steps, he waited for Peyton. He glanced at his watch. They were good on time yet. They didn’t have to meet the rest of the group at the club until six. Cocktails first, then dinner.

The light click of heels on the stairs drew his attention. His heart slammed in his chest, and his mouth went dry. In the past year, he’d seen her dressed nicely plenty of times to go to the club, but the radiant beautiful sight he saw before him now stole his breath. He’d always thought she was pretty and liked her, but since she’d touched him the other day, she was all he could think about, day in and day out. Whether his eyes were open or closed, visions of her lovely smile, milky white skin, and dark, spellbinding eyes consumed him.

Can one steamy night be the answer? One Night in Kuala Lumpur by @abbeymacmunn #EroticRomance

Title: One Night in Kuala Lumpur

Author: Abbey MacMunn

Publisher: Tirgearr Publishing

Genre: Erotic Romance

 OneNightinKualaLumpurbyAbbeyMacMunn500

Blurb:

In search of inspiration and excitement, successful artist, Ziva Clarke, takes a trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her exhibitions in the UK have left her exhausted, she’s had no fun in ages and her creativity is at below zero—the exotic Far East could be just what she needs.

Charmer Sam Tempest is visiting Kuala Lumpur on business with his father, but behind the impeccable suit and the wicked smile, he’s not a happy man. Duty bound to join his family’s international business, Sam longs to follow his true passion—to carve wood sculptures.

The two lonely souls meet by chance on a crowded street, and when it turns out they might not be the strangers they first thought, so begins a night of confessions, shared dreams and hot sex.

Can one steamy night in Kuala Lumpur be the answer to both their dreams?

Excerpt:

Squinting, Ziva tried to see who’d spoken in a deep, smooth-as-silk British accent.

A tall man stood before her and greeted her with an alluring, lopsided smile that exuded confidence. Kind eyes crinkled at the corners.

His broad shoulders were clad in a navy, tailored business suit. With his thick hair, a rich, burnt umber colour, slicked back off his forehead, and an angular, clean-shaven jaw, the guy could have stepped off the set of a TV advert for men’s cologne. And his lips… oh boy, his lips. Full, well-defined, and made for sinning.

Her mouth dried. Kuala Lumpur grew more interesting by the second.

Elise filled in for her temporary inability to speak. “No, we haven’t. My sister failed to mention Pavilion or Lot 10. I’m afraid she doesn’t share my love for shopping.”

Surprise flashed across his face before his smile widened then hitched higher in one corner. Yep, male model material. Just my luck if he’s gay.

Elise shifted from one foot to the other and adjusted her hold on her dozen or so shopping bags. “Are the malls far?”
“No, not far. They’re near the Golden Triangle part of the city.”

Ziva stifled another groan. More malls, right near where they were staying.

The guy tipped his head. “I’m Sam, by the way.” Sophisticated charm oozed from every pore. “It’s lovely to meet two beautiful English roses so far from home.” Although he spoke to both of them, he directed an intense gaze at Ziva. Mischievous cobalt eyes sparkled in the bright sunlight then he winked at her. Hmm, not gay then.

“Hi, I’m Elise,” her sister said, sticking out her chest. “Nice to meet you, too.” She shuffled her feet again. “My feet are roasting standing here.”

Ziva glanced at Elise’s unsuitable choice of footwear as she stood on a drain cover. “I’m not surprised your feet are hot. It’s ninety-five degrees and you’re wearing high-heeled boots. I told you to wear your flat sandals.”

Elise rolled her eyes. “Flat sandals do not go with this outfit,” she said resignedly. “Kuala Lumpur is home to some of the best shopping malls in South East Asia—who cares about a little discomfort?”

“So, you were listening when I read out the tourist brochure and the amazing places I’d like to visit.”

“No, not really.” Elise gave an apologetic shrug. “I heard ‘shopping malls’ mostly.”

Sam laughed. His attention never left Ziva. “And your name is…?”

The crowd surged forward to cross the road. Someone jostled past Ziva, accidentally knocking her elbow. Her tatty canvas handbag and her one and only shopping bag dropped to the ground. She gasped as her new lingerie tumbled onto the dusty pavement. “Oh, crap!”

Stooping to her haunches, she then hastily stuffed lacy bras and matching thongs back into the paper bag. Her blonde curls tumbled over her face, helping to hide cheeks that burned hotter than the pavement. A serious contender for Miss Tiny Tits UK, she’d been spoiled for choice when she’d seen that the malls in KL catered for smaller women, so she’d treated herself to a few items of sexy underwear. Not that she had an occasion to wear it, but still, the last thing she needed was to have it displayed for all to see.

Sam kneeled in front of her, picked up a black bra, and swung it on his finger. “Here, I think you missed one.”

Head still down, she reached for the bra, but he hooked his finger around the strap and held it firm. She tugged. “Let go.”

“Not until you tell me your name.” He tugged back, stretching the lace and elastic across the distance between them. “And not until you look at me.”

BLURB

A jealousy that destroys everything in its path…a love that refuses to die.

Zoey Morgan seems to have it all as a successful surgeon in Boston. However, perfection lies only on the surface. Plagued by nightmares and amnesia from a tragedy that ripped her family from her fourteen years ago, she finds the courage to reach out to the only man who can make her feel safe. She’s buried the memory of their love, but her heart—and her body—responds to the ex-marine in ways that are all too familiar.

Grayson “Gray” Walker’s heart shattered when Zoey chose another man over him. Since then, he’s built an impenetrable wall around his emotions. But from the moment she implodes back into his life, her vulnerability breaches his defenses. His skills as an elite member of the King Security team cannot shield him from the devastation of learning he might have left Zoey high and dry when she needed him most. Now, Gray must navigate the tripwire of helping her heal while protecting himself from being hurt again.

As the embers of their potent love reignite, an old threat awakens, leading to greater danger than ever before.

EXCERPT

Gray’s hands balled into fists. He wanted to punch the walls. “Take me to her. Now!”

“You need to control yourself, Mr. Walker.”

Rage joined the sick fear churning inside him and he glared at the doctor. She didn’t flinch. Her face held no judgment, but her steady gaze also gave no quarter. Gray found it anchored him, offering him no alternative but to deal with the reality slamming into him. The rigidity in his body eased. Doctor Wells nodded slightly, and in a cool, precise voice, continued. “Given Miss Morgan’s concussion and the yet unidentified drug in her system, we would prefer not to administer any more sedatives.”

Ping!

The doors opened and they stepped out. She led them down another corridor and stopped outside a numbered ward. “Mr. Walker—”

“It’s Gray.”

“Okay, Gray.” She clasped her hands in front of her. “Zoey is extremely agitated. To calm her, you need to find the calmness within yourself.” Her probing stare insisted on a response.

He nodded sharply.

“She’s on the edge of hysteria and in danger of hurting herself. If you cannot calm her, we will be forced to sedate her for her own safety.”

Zoey!

Gray’s heart hammered wildly. He closed his eyes, and for the first time since he’d raced into the ED, let her image surface.

His beautiful red butterfly. Mercurial and brilliant. Her dark-copper hair alight with so many fiery streaks, he was constantly amazed it didn’t singe his skin. The curly length was unexpectedly soft, so goddamn sexy when it slipped like satin through his fingers. But as much as he loved her hair, it was her eyes that endlessly beguiled him. Tapered like a cat, they were vivid-green with a golden ring around her pupil. A fascinating combination of sex-kitten and innocent, and such an integral part of her expressive nature. There were times he thought they were too large for her heart-shaped face, but then she’d laugh and they’d turn that intense jewel-like green. Wicked. Infectious. Or she’d whimper with desire, and the golden ring would leak into the green. Hot and slumberous. Untamed.

“Gray?”

He opened his eyes, forcing Zoey’s image back into darkness. “Take me to her.” He met the doctor’s unblinking scrutiny. “Please.”

Meet Author @Shari_Nich and Discover Why MRS N Can’t Wait to Read Her #Books! #amreading #PNR

Author Interview

As many of you know, I’m a huge paranormal romance reader. It’s one of my all-time favorite genres so when I come across a paranormal romance new-to-me author, I’m all over their books like a honey bee to flowers. I met Shari through a fellow author, M. T. Magee, and we instantly connected. I convinced her to sit down for an interview and she agreed. I can’t wait to read her brand-new release, Haunted, from Liquid Silver Press. Take it away, Shari:

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you?

There are so many fabulous authors that have inspired me over the years with their words and their characters. I absolutely love Alice Clayton! Her books are filled with humor and heart. I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing Sylvia Day at an NJRW conference and got an autograph and a picture with her. She was so kind and lovely. Her writing style, voice and her ability to create off-the-charts sensuality between her characters are some of the many reasons I fell in love with her books. I admire the outrageousness and humor from the fabulous writing team of Christina Lauren. I’ve read Beautiful Bastard countless times, and still laugh hysterically. I’m always blown away by Kresley Cole’s world building. I was thrilled to meet her at RWA in NYC a few years back. She was very sweet! In my opinion, JK Rowling is an utter genius. I’ve read all of the Harry Potter books three- four times and will probably read all of them again. J Kenner’s characters are relatable and quite complex. I absolutely love her Stark series Iwill get to meet her at the Liberty States Fiction conference in March, which will be a thrill.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?

The first thing I do when I figure out who my characters are is to look through magazines or go online for ideas. I try to find out who best resembles the characters floating around in my head and then make poster boards and refer to them as I write. In my novel, HAUNTED, my hero, Thayne is based on the gorgeous actor, Ryan Reynolds .I’ve tried my best to vividly describe him as tall with golden brown hair, whiskey colored eyes, and a physique that would  make most women weep. He’s also incredibly witty, smart, and cool, a hero in every sense of the word. My heroine would be played by a young Scarlett Johannsen, a petite blonde with big, blue eyes. She’s sexy, sincere, and lovable, not to mention there’s a certain vulnerability that I think most women can relate to on some level.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Names are critical when it comes to creating believable, well developed characters. I remember my brother in law once told me about his uncle Thayne and described him as a tall, strapping man who had quite the reputation with the ladies in his youth. Immediately, an image began to form in my mind. The name sounded so masculine and unbelievably sexy, I knew I had to create this larger than life character and make him jump off the page. As for my other characters, some are based on people I might know, some are based on people from TV and film. Sometimes just hearing a name sparks my imagination and I plot who that character could be and what drives them.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Don’t give up! If I can do this anyone can. Publishing is a tough business and not for the faint of heart by any means. Develop a thick skin and never take it personally when you get rejected. It’s part of the process. Get into a critique group and submit your work on a regular basis. Be accountable for your writing, even when you’re not published. Try entering contests. Go to conferences and talk to other authors. Find out what they’re doing. Take writing classes, and workshops. Read everything you can in your genre and don’t overlook those books on writing as   well.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I’m working on a three book contemporary series that focuses on three best friends from college who are navigating careers, and love in the Big Apple. I like to think of it as a modern day Sex in the City. There’s humor, fashion, gay best friends, over the top characters, and even a Mr. Big type of sexy alpha hero. As much as I love writing paranormal, it’s nice to step away from that world and focus on something completely different.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Boy that’s a tough one! There’s so many! I would love to have the power to know what people are thinking. It could save a lot of time and energy. I would also love to have the power to make myself invisible so I could spy on my kids.

What secret talents do you have?

Sadly, not many, but I still remember how to twirl a baton. Does that count? I guess it’s one of those weird talents you never really forget. I also have a photographic memory for recalling faces. I’m still wondering when this talent will come in handy.

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?

I’ve always wanted to go to Europe like my heroine, Karly. I hope to get there someday. Greece, Italy and France are at the top of the list. Oops that’s three.

What’s on your bucket list (things to do before you die)?

I want to travel to as many exotic locales as possible, try the food, experience the culture, and learn about the people and the history. I’ve been talking about getting my Master’s degree for years. I’m still deciding in what. I would love to help my brother achieve his goals and participate in Special Olympics. I’ve always talked about taking a girls vacation with some really close friends and paying for the entire trip with all of my books sales.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

That’s an easy one! I would be a golden retriever. My beloved, dog, Buddy is a golden and they have the sweetest and most loyal dispositions. I could only aspire to be that adorable.

Title: HAUNTED

Author: Shari Nichols

Publisher: Liquid Silver Press

Blurb:

When medium Karly Matthews agrees to move into a haunted inn, she’s not sure what’s more dangerous, the ghost or the sexy innkeeper she tries to resist. She’s can’t deny the intense rush of desire she feels every time he’s near. When she agrees to embark on a no-strings-attached relationship, she finds herself thrust into a world of mind-blowing pleasures. Now she must face the aching truths of her past.

Hotel heir Thayne Harper has a laser-like focus on success that doesn’t include the help of his family. He’s always been the black sheep, living in the shadow of his dead brother. His dreams are put to the test when a supernatural entity threatens to ruin everything. The one bright spot is the woman who intrigues his mind and heats his blood. If only he can convince her that, despite his bad boy ways, he can change for the good. Her love becomes his only salvation. Passion burns white-hot as a dark threat looms. The ghost doesn’t want them to be together and sets her sights on Thayne, luring him to a place that goes beyond death. Will Karly be able to save him before it’s too late?

Excerpt:

Karly made sure to keep her head down, wanting to avoid another run-in. Her fingers tightened around her key chain with every step. She was almost to the main street, when she bumped into a solid wall of muscle that threatened to knock her on her ass.

Her keys flew from her hands as she began to fall backward. Before she hit the ground, two strong hands reached out and caught her around the waist. She glanced up and into the gorgeous face of the god she’d seen earlier.

Up close, he was even more stunning and taller than she’d calculated. He exuded strength and masculinity, and when he focused that intense magnetism on her, all the air left her lungs, along with her ability to speak.

Genuine concern flashed in his whiskey colored eyes. “I’m sorry. Are you okay?” His voice was like warm chocolate, melting her insides. When he dropped his hands, Karly could still feel the imprints on her skin.

“Y-yes, I’m fine. I’m the one who should be apologizing. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” Her heart pounded wildly in her chest. The man smelled incredible, like sandalwood and clean laundry.

“No need for apologies. Maybe you should sit down for a minute and have a drink with me.” There was elegance in the way he spoke that made her think of old money and private school.

For a moment Karly thought about taking him up on his offer, but she wasn’t in the frame of mind to pull off light conversation or flirty banter at this point. “Thanks, but I have to pass. This night, well, it didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped so I think it’s my cue to go.” She did her best to school her features, but inside she was feeling raw and vulnerable. The only thing she wanted to do was go home, soak in a hot bath, and lick her wounds.

His searing gaze swept over her and made butterflies flutter in her stomach “Stay. Perhaps I can make it better.”

Karly glanced at his jacket for his nametag, but like her, he wasn’t wearing one. “I’m guessing you’re in either sales or politics, and if this is all for a campaign donation, I’m sorry. I already gave at the office.” Immediately she got a vibe telling her he was his own boss, which wasn’t hard to figure out. The man exuded confidence and power.

The throaty sound of his laughter raised goose bumps on her flesh. “So you’re funny and beautiful that’s quite a rare combo, Miss….?”

His words slid over her like a warm caress. A flush spread across her cheeks. She shook her head, a little dazed by the compliment. It would be hard not to succumb to his charms. If she was honest, his scent alone was driving her crazy. No, the man spelled danger. “I’m sorry. I should go. Good night and uh, nice running into you.” She sucked in a breath, turned and took a step toward the street.

“I don’t think you’ll get far without these,” he said in a bone-melting voice that forced her to turn around. He held up her keys in his hand.

“Right. Thanks.” She’d become so dazzled by his looks, she’d completely forgotten about them flying out of her hands

“My pleasure.” The way he said the word pleasure conjured images of their bodies tangled together, rolling around in satin sheets. The air sizzled with sexual tension. Slowly, he closed the distance between them and placed the keys in her hands. She purposely avoided touching him, but his fingers grazed hers, sending a spark of awareness up and down her arm.

“Don’t go,” he whispered.

“Why?” Karly was curious to hear what he’d say next.

“I can’t let you disappear into the night without telling me your name.” The words were spoken in a commanding tone that normally would’ve irritated her, but for some reason when he said them they hit every one of her buttons. “You can give me that much can’t you? It’s not every day I meet someone that captivates me and you have, quite thoroughly I might add.”

The scorching heat in his gaze made her shiver. She swallowed and tried to regain her equilibrium. It’d been a long time since a man had looked at her with such blatant desire. “I’m impressed— that’s quite a pick-up line. I’m curious, does it usually work?”

A guy that looked like him probably had women falling all over themselves to get his attention. It didn’t take a psychic to glean the man was a player. He was too smooth to be anything else. “You’re pretty sure of yourself. Do you always get what you want?”

Excerpt:

Her hands were moving at a robotic speed. The antique wooden timepiece that hung leisurely on the living room wall did not seem impressive today. Its ticking was triggering nervousness in her, but she was holding her ground bravely.

BANG.

A sharp noise disrupted her attention. Her packaging machine was spewing smoke. An electric spark had damaged the machine. She quickly pulled the plug out of the socket, but the damage was done.

How will I complete the work now? There is no way to get a new machine at such a short notice. There are only two hours left, and so many packages are still incomplete. Her knees buckled, and she fell to the ground, hope escaping her body.

The lock on the door clicked, and her husband entered.

“Hey, baby. What happened?” Shobhit said. She looked up and did not respond; her sullen eyes were expressing her pain well enough.

“See, I am home early today. I was not feeling well. So, I took a day off. There is some work left, but I can manage that from home.”

Aparna did not respond.

“Aren’t you happy that I came home early?”

“It is not about you. What do you want? Should I jump and dance that you came home early?” she snapped.

He raised an eyebrow, “Why are you getting irritated?”

Aparna took a deep breath and told him the problem. His lips curled viciously.

“What? Are you this upset for a silly order? Aparna, grow up.”

“But it is my first big order, and now it is all ruined. I cannot finish it.”

Shobhit hung his expensive blazer in the closet, loosened his tie and sank into the plush couch, paying no heed to her. After a while he spoke, clearly frustrated. “Can I get some tea? I am not feeling well.”

Aparna looked up; a tear silently slipped from her eye. She picked up the pan and boiled aromatic tea leaves in some water. After a while, she heard her husband’s calm voice.

“Don’t worry, baby. It’s okay. Don’t run after these stupid orders. How much do you think you would have earned from this – a few thousand bucks? Take that from me. Now smile.”

She did not smile, and he continued. “Sweetheart, I am earning a fortune. It is painful to see you crying for pennies. You should be out at the mall shopping for expensive bags, just like the other ladies.”

She looked blankly at him and felt a strange force piercing her heart. The pain was unbearable as if blood was oozing out. Now that she had understood the importance of dreams and was following it passionately, how could she make him understand?

But she was decisive. She said, “I cannot give up at the last moment. If you don’t understand, that is okay.”

She picked up a hairdryer.

“This could do the job,” she murmured.

She wrapped the soap in shrink wrap plastic and applied the heat from the dryer. It worked. The plastic clung to the soap, and she let out a sigh of relief.

It was a slow process, but she had to try, at least, to finish on time. Shobhit looked at her and shrugged his shoulders in frustration. He took his cup of tea and went to his study. He was about to open his laptop when he got a call from his mother.

“Mom, I am busy,” he snapped.

“I wanted to talk to Aparna; she is not picking up the phone.”

“She won’t. Her mood is off because of her silly business. Let her be.” He scrunched up his face.

His mother listened to the rant. She was a kind and wise lady. Instead of bitching about her daughter-in-law, she said something different. “Shobhit, do you remember your first basketball match? How would you have felt If I told you that you couldn’t win because you weren’t tall? How would you have felt if I told you that your profession is useless; that you needed to become a doctor like me?”

Shobhit was quiet.

“How would you have felt if you were not promoted? It matters, right? Success matters?”

“Yes.”

“Yes, because it was your dream to achieve these things. Then how is Aparna’s dream different? Just because you are rich or because she is your wife? This should not be a reason to stop her from following her passion. Appreciate her. It is her business, even if it is small now. Respect it.”

Shobhit felt a lump in his throat. He quickly ran towards the kitchen. Aparna was busy struggling with the hair dryer, surrounded by a mound of unwrapped soaps. She could not complete it, even by night.

“I am sorry. Can I help you?” he asked.

“No, I have just one hair dryer. You cannot help. Thanks,” she said in a sad, frustrated tone, not even raising her gaze.

He quickly called up all his friends and arranged for hair dryers. Within the next thirty minutes, all the electrical plugs in his house were occupied, and everyone was busy wrapping the beautiful pieces. Within no time, they were all ready. Her first big order was successfully delivered.

Shobhit held her hand and said, “I am sorry. I appreciate you for whatever you do and will always support you. I am proud of you.”

A tear escaped her eye, but this time for a different reason.

Lies, Love & Redemption by Award-Winning Author @KWilkinsauthor #historicalromance #books

Title: Lies, Love & Redemption

Author:
 Kelli A. Wilkins

Genre:
 Historical (Western) Romance

Lies, Love & Redemption is a full-length novel set on the Nebraska prairie in 1877. It blends a steamy romance with mystery and danger.

Blurb:

Shot and left for dead, Sam Hixton stumbles into a general store on the Nebraska prairie and collapses into the arms of Cassie Wilcox.

Cassie’s world is turned upside down when the handsome stranger drops into her life. Sam is another complication she doesn’t need: her business is dying and her trouble with the townspeople is escalating. Yet she’s determined to keep the store open — no matter what the cost.

As Sam recovers from his injuries, he hides the truth about his identity and convinces Cassie to let him work in the store. He’s attracted to her and admires her independent nature but quickly realizes Cassie’s in way over her head. They fight their growing attraction, and Cassie questions whether she can trust her fragile heart to a mysterious stranger. Will he accept her once he knows about her troubled past?

Cassie resists Sam’s advances and represses her feelings until one fateful night when they give in to their fiery passion. Together, they work out a plan to save the store but find their efforts are thwarted—and their lives endangered—by the locals.

Sam’s secret returns to haunt him and pulls him away just when Cassie needs him the most. Will he regain her trust when she learns the truth? Cassie has everything invested in the store—can she save it and find true love with Sam before it’s too late?

Here’s an excerpt from Lies, Love & Redemption:

Cassie dusted off a can of apricots and restacked it on the shelf. “Why do I even bother?” she muttered as she picked up the next can.

Another week had come and gone, but her days were always the same. Get up at dawn, sweep out the store, dust off the cans, and . . . wait. Her few customers strolled in on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to buy odds and ends, but nearly everyone bought their bulk goods at the general store in Baxter. Townsfolk came here only when they wanted something quick—or on credit.

The bell above the door jangled, but she didn’t bother to turn around. “That you, Luke? You’re up early. I bet you haven’t seen this side of ten o’clock in—”

She glanced over her shoulder and shrieked. The can of apricots slipped from her hand and rolled across the floor.

A stranger covered in blood leaned against the doorjamb.

She rushed to his side. “Who are you? What happened?”

The man locked his blue eyes onto hers. “Help me.”

He held a battered leather satchel out to her. “Hide this,” he said, then collapsed forward.

Cassie caught him around the waist and eased him to the plank floor. Was he dead? She felt the side of his sweaty neck. His heart was beating, but he looked like hell. His clothes were coated in blood and dirt, and his face had a sickly white hue to it. He was lucky to be alive. Someone had shot him full of holes.

Where had he come from? Holloway was in the middle of nowhere with no railroad connection, and it wasn’t on the stagecoach line. She hadn’t heard a horse out front, and he couldn’t have walked here from Baxter, could he? That would be suicide.

Wild ideas raced through her mind as she stared down at him. Maybe he was a fugitive or a bank robber. Decent people didn’t get themselves shot for no reason. Whoever shot him could’ve been following him, looking to finish him off.

Her gaze settled on the satchel. What was in it? Money? Gold? The deed to a silver mine? Why did he want her to hide it?

Cassie brushed her hair away from her face and frowned. What the hell was she supposed to do with him? Why had he wandered into her store, of all places? The last thing she needed was a half-dead stranger complicating her life. His being here would only stir up trouble—and she already had more than she needed.

Maybe she could— With a start, she realized he hadn’t moved. She shook his bloodied left shoulder.  The man remained motionless. “Damn it to hell.” She yanked the satchel from his grip, then ran behind the counter and stuffed it in the bottom drawer. There wasn’t time to look inside and see what the stranger was hiding. Whoever he was, he needed help—fast.

Excerpt:

His mind screamed to stay rooted in his chair, but his body betrayed him. Standing, he reached for her hand. “I will escort ye to your chamber.”

She eyed him with curiosity and stood. “Nae. Take me to the north wall. I hear the view of the loch is one that steals the breath from your lungs.”

“Done.” When her fingers slipped into his, Desmond fought the urge to crush her to his chest.

Placing her soft hand in the crook of his arm, he led her quickly out of the hall and up the stairs. Bending to the left, he took her along a corridor and up a narrow circular pathway. The torches flickered as he approached the door leading to the north wall.

A cold draft blew by them, and she shivered. Instantly, regret filled him realizing he had not considered to bring a cloak for her.

Desmond paused by the door. “Ye should not venture out into the biting cold without a cloak.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I simply wish to capture a quick look, not spend the night sleeping out there.”

Shaking his head, he pushed open the massive oak door. Brittle air slapped at his face while they made their way up along the wall.

“’Tis cold,” she muttered, but chuckled softly and hugged his arm. “But ye are

warm.”

“We shall not tarry long,” he assured her and placed a warm hand over hers.

“Oh, sweet Goddess. Look at the moon, Desmond. Her light shimmers over the water. I have now witnessed the charm of the loch in sunlight and moonlight. Though our rivers are stunning on their own, they cannae rival this view. As I have told ye, our island is shrouded in mists, so ye cannae see verra far out into the sea.”

Desmond’s focus was not on the moon, but the beauty standing beside him. To take what he dared not possess. He marveled at her delight of the striking scene.

Ailsa turned toward him. “Thank ye, Desmond, truly.”

Her nearness was overpowering, seducing him in a way he had never known. Desmond cupped her chin. Her eyes widened, and her lips parted in invitation. Moonlight and lust danced within her eyes. No longer did he battle with his mind and body, and he slowly lowered his head.

And under the silent whisper of a full moon, Desmond captured her soft lips within his own. He

could taste her sweetness mixed with the wine, and desire shot through his veins. His hands shook as he placed them securely on her waist. As he deepened the kiss, she placed her hands around his neck. Desmond groaned, crushing her body against him.

Excerpt:

Isle of Mull

Scotland, 1486

My father sat in his usual chair in front of the crackling fire, staring at the flame with dim eyes and a fur robe wrapped around his broad shoulders, the deerhound curled at his feet.

“Where are you going, Aine?” he asked with his back turned toward the stone, spiral staircase where I stood. “Come, sit with me for awhile.”

I pushed the arisaid from my shoulders, letting it drop to the floor, then stepped over the wrap. Making my way to the stool where my mother’s embroidery frame stood, I took a seat and watched the flame.

Without turning his head, my father, Lachlan Og MacLean, eighth chief and fourth Laird of Durant Castle, asked, “Where are you going?”

“How did you ken ’twas I?” He never ceased to amaze me with his uncanny knowledge of events  around him although his eyes, so dimmed by injury, saw very little.

“I heard the rustle of your skirts.” He extended his hand for me, so I rose and hugged his neck.

He smiled, embracing my arms. “And I ken your scent, lass. ‘Tis so like your mither’s. You use the same scented soap as she.”

“Aye, but from so far away and with the smell of burning wood and dog in your nostril’s?”

“Your odor is a different pleasantry among the usual burning wood and dog. It stands out in my memory as does the pleasant odor of your mither.” He smiled broadly, showing still straight, white teeth beneath a greying beard. I could almost feel his penetrating gaze upon me as in the days before his sight was taken in battle. He asked, “Where are you going this dreary night?”

“Here, Da. To sit beside you and talk of the feast on the morrow.”

“Don’t try to deceive me, lass. I heard the sound of your arisaid dropping to the floor. You are planning a tryst, I feel certain.” His dimmed gaze pierced through to the depths of my soul. “I could see the turn of your head toward him each time he spoke at the evening meal.” A line formed between his brows and a shadow darkened his face. “You are to marry the Munro.”

“I dinna love William Munro.” My voice began to rise, and I struggled to control the cry climbing from the depths of my heart. “I wanna marry him, Da. You promised I could wed for love, not convenience.” The cry emerged from my lips. I buried my head on his shoulder and sobbed.

He Isn’t Going Anywhere — The Queen of Paradise Valley by @CatDubie #historicalromance #books

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Title: The Queen of Paradise Valley

Author: Cat Dubie

Genre: Historical Western Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Blurb:

Diana Rennie, daughter of a wealthy rancher, attempts to persuade mystery man Del Russell to leave his grievances behind and forgive her father for past mistakes. Her careful plan goes awry and results in a shotgun wedding and a prison sentence for Del.

Four years later, Del is back in her life with a vengeance—back for his rightful share of Diana’s ranch, back to prove he isn’t the criminal she thought he was, back to finish what the two of them started years ago in a passionate daze. And he isn’t going anywhere, no matter what beautiful, treacherous Diana does or says to try to get rid of him.

Excerpt:

“Guess Diablo’s gonna be yours, hey Boss? You tamed him good.”

“Like taming a woman.” Del rubbed the mustang’s flank.

“Yeah, sure. You strip ’em, gentle ’em with your hands, then ride the hell out of–uh–” Spying Diana on the fence, Mosquito ducked his head. “Mierda. Forgive me, Miss Diana–”

She didn’t speak; her cold expression was punishing enough. Muttering, “Uh-oh,” Mosquito walked the mustang away.

Del called after Mosquito, “I’ll be there in a few minutes to clean Diablo.” It had been an exhilarating ride, unconstrained, hell even joyful, something he hadn’t experienced in years. Hobo, his pinto cayuse and companion for the past year, didn’t have the mustang’s fierce stamina, the pumping power of its legs.

Soaked strands of hair clung to Del’s forehead. He swiped them away and strode to the fence, squinted up at Diana. “Looks like I earned myself a horse. Any objections?”

She looked over his head. “You won, didn’t you? One tough brute taming another.”

He untied the bandanna from his arm and held it out. “Your token, ma’am. It doesn’t smell as good as it did a few minutes ago.”

Her gaze flicked over the limp black cloth. “Keep the damn thing. I don’t want it now.”

Why did she challenge him at every turn? On impulse he reached for her waist and lifted her off the fence. She was light and lithe and fluid as she twisted to free herself, but when her feet touched the ground she stiffened like a piece of hardwood and dug with frantic force at his fingers. “Take your hands off me!”

Was that a note of desperation in her voice? “Doesn’t the knight get a kiss from the queen after he wins the battle?”

Cheeks darkening, she pushed on his chest but wasn’t quick enough to evade his mouth. He touched his lips to hers and she jerked back. “How dare you embarrass me in front of the men? You stink like a sweaty horse, like a–a–”

Hands in the air, he took a backward step. “Like a man? And you’re afraid of men? Is that why your lips are as cold as ice?”

Cat Dubie

Author Biography:

My love of words began early–I’m told I was making rhymes soon after I began to talk. With a crayon in my hand I first drew stories, with a pencil I wrote them. As for reading, I was the girl who always had her nose in a book, the one who read with a flashlight under the covers or, when the moon was full, would sit by a window for hours laughing, crying, loving characters whose adventurous lives wouldn’t let her sleep.

The girl grew up, married one of the good guys, raised three great children, worked, laughed, lived, and never lost her need for creating stories about romance, adventure, passion, mystery, love…

We now live in southwestern British Columbia where I’m able to indulge that need full time, plot, plan, and now share my stories with readers.

Christmas Stories: A Guest Post by Kate Parker #TuesdayBookBlog #historicalromance #Christmas

Christmas Stories by Kate Parker

We all have our memories of perfect Christmas mornings. For me, it’s only after Christmas breakfast and all the presents are unwrapped that my perfect Christmas morning begins.

I see myself snug in my flannel pjs and fluffy slippers, a nice big mug of hot tea at hand and, piled up next to me – a stack of new books smelling of fresh ink and newly cut paper. New-to-me authors, old favorites, all are welcome.

Now for reality… I’ll have to exchange my flannel pjs and fluffy slippers for a T-shirt and shorts if I don’t want to melt. I don’t care how hot it gets, I still love my hot tea. So it’ll be hot tea and an e-reader after Christmas breakfast while wearing shorts, a T-shirt, and leaving my feet bare.

DIGITAL CAMERA

My ereader will bring me tales of sled rides through the frozen wilderness, snow ball battles beneath cozy chimneys that give off picturesque, non-polluting, wispy smoke, formal balls with stolen kisses beneath the mistletoe, and the number one best Christmas gift of all, a dead body murdered by clever means.

Nothing says Christmas to me like a good fictional murder under the Christmas tree. Or under the skating pond or in a snow drift or upsetting the horses. There must be blood splashed on the snow or dripped on the ballroom floor. At least one debutante, not the heroine, must faint. If crinolines rustle and sleigh bells jingle, all the better.

The contemporary fiction equivalent is the plucky heroine marching through the snow, gun strapped to her back, stopping the nefarious plot in time to sing carols and watch nieces and nephews open gifts. Clever murders here are more of the “karma” kind, where the villain dies from his own poison, bomb, or javelin.

DIGITAL CAMERA

And the food! While I munch on Christmas foil-wrapped peanut butter cups and drink hot tea, I will read about whole roasted turkeys and wassail and cranberries and Christmas pudding with a sixpence inside. And if a cup of wassail is poisoned… Pure bliss. These foods work in either historical or contemporary stories.

In historical mysteries, the servants will be ever so grateful on Boxing Day, the children will enjoy cloth and wooden toys that don’t require batteries, and some lovely young woman will get an engagement ring either before or after the discovery of the body. The placement of the engagement is dependent on whether said lovely young woman is a sleuth or involved in the murder.

In contemporary holiday tales, the ending shows children either teaching grandparents how to use the newest electronic gear they received as presents or willingly setting down cell phones to spend time in the family’s traditional group endeavor. If it involves ice skating or football in the snow, so much the better.

In Christmas mysteries, words like “dreary” will be balanced out with words like “sparkling.” There will be plenty of snow between the pages to overcome the sunny and mild temperatures outside my door. Icicles will dangle from the roof – unless they’ve been used as a dagger.

Just writing this post has put me in the mood for Christmas. I hope Santa is bringing me lots of murder and mayhem this year for my e-reader, and I hope he is just as generous with your stocking. Whether your favorites are romance, mystery, sci fi, fantasy, or something else, may you have plenty of it to enjoy on Christmas morning.

Top 10 Reasons I Love #Thanksgiving: A Guest Post by @RuthACasie #books #romance

thanksgiving-2903166_1280

The top 10 reasons I love Thanksgiving!

We celebrate the Friday after.

At our house we celebrate Thanksgiving the day after turkey day. We started the tradition as a compromise for my kids and their in-laws. They were conflicted about where to spend Thanksgiving. No one wanted to miss dinner with their family. We talked about brunch in the morning or later in the day. That just wasn’t the same. Instead I opted for the day after. It was not a hardship. I did it selfishly. This way I have them all to myself. My kids and their in-laws love the idea.

No turkey!

This year’s menu is roast leg of lamb and brisket. (It’s the same every year. I’m forbidden to change it.) That’s another benefit of celebrating the day after. No turkey. Everyone’s had their fill on Thursday. I can be a bit more creative with the menu. Although the family still demands mulled cider, sweet potato souffle and noodle pudding.

Everyone moves back home.

Our son and his girlfriend drive down from Boston. Our older daughter and our two grandchildren are only forty minutes away, but they come home and move in for the weekend. Our two daughters and their families (they only live thirty minutes away) move home for the weekend. It will definitely be a houseful but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Butternut Squash Soup.

Our younger daughter added this to our menu two years ago. My cooking is all done when she comes in with all the mixings and makes the soup.

My older grandkids help in the kitchen.

Well, maybe not my grandson. He prefers to hang out with his uncle and play ball across the street in the park. My older granddaughter sets the table, makes place cards and watch her cousin so her aunt can help in the kitchen

The coffee runs to Dunkin Donuts and late night outings to the local ice cream shop.

Our son goes to our local DD and brings home a selection of coffees for us while we finish cooking. It’s always a surprise. Since our dinner is midafternoon, my husband takes the grandkids to the ice cream shop to bring back more surprises. I could easily have the ice cream at the house, but I think he uses it as an excuse to spend some alone time with two big kids.

Time together.

After dinner we flop on the sofa with a large bowl of popcorn. My husband tries to get a Scrabble game going but he loses out to game.

Sunday Night.

With all this tumult and cooking, did I mention the mandatory French toast Saturday morning I start to look forward to Sunday night when they all go home?

Four more weeks.

Thank goodness they’ll all be back in four weeks for the holidays and we do this again. This time with presents!

It’s all magical to me.

At our day after Thanksgiving dinner, I sit and look at family around the table and beam with pride. I’d be happy not to eat, just enjoy them. This is what I’m most thankful for, my dear husband who supports me in everything I do, my children and their spouses who make me laugh until I cry, and my three grandchildren who are blessings.

I hope your Thanksgiving is delicious and wonderful.

Title: The Highlander’s English Woman

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

Laura Reynolds is in love with her long-time friend, Jamie Maxwell Collins. She adores his playful sense of humor, caring nature as well as his strong sense of family and honor.

Jamie lives across the border in Scotland. Outwardly carefree, he hides a dark secret. He can’t involve Laura in this deception. He can’t give her hope for a future together.

Laura stumbles upon Jamie’s secret. In her heart of hearts she knows Jamie is innocent. Their relationship in tatters and with no hope of reconciliation, she plays a deadly game to exonerate Jamie, she agrees to a political marriage. She has no idea the entire game has been orchestrated by her future husband, Jamie’s greatest enemy.

Excerpt:

He opened the cemetery gate and made his way to the small building where the 9th century remains of William the Brave rested. In the building was a hidden passage that led inside the castle. A dangerous place for boys to play. He and Richard prided themselves on being the only people aware these tunnels existed. Forgotten over the centuries, it had taken them weeks to clean out the debris and shore it up to make it usable.

The hair on the back of his neck stood. Someone was with him inside the cemetery. He crouched behind a tombstone. In the distance, a dark shadow proceeded along the path.

Jamie took stock of the man as he made his way to the Reynolds’ family graves. He thought at first Reeve came to pay his respect to Richard, but the form was all wrong. This shadow was bigger, more agile. The man stopped and waited. For whom? For what?

Jamie moved for a closer look. His brushed against a tombstone and knocked loose pebbles that rested on the top to the ground. In the complete silence, the cascade of stones sounded like boulders echoing in a valley.

In an easy, elegant move, the man drew his sword. No, this wasn’t Reeve. Jamie did the same.

The darkening shadows made it impossible for Jamie to identify who he fought. That didn’t stop either man. His attacker put him on the defense. Jamie retreated in a matter of seconds.

Jamie and the shadow parried and lunged. Evenly matched, neither gave signs of tiring. Several times he almost had the man, only to have him bound over an obstacle and come back for more.

Just like…

“For a moment I thought you fought like Lord Richard,” Jamie said. The man answered with a barrage of strikes.

But Jamie held his ground. He fought stroke for stroke until they came into a close battle position, the hilts of their swords locked against their chests. Clouds moved and the man’s face was revealed under the moonlight.

Jamie dropped his sword and froze. His heart pounded. The man threw his head back and laughed.

“Richard?”

The laughter subsided. Richard put his arm around Jamie and squeezed him close. “I wonder if Father has any ale? How I would love to taste it one more time.”

Why Don’t They Publish Original #Books Anymore? N. N. Light Investigates! #FridayReads

books

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. I’ve been thinking a lot about books and books I’ve read in my lifetime lately and I wonder where all the original books have gone. The bestseller lists are littered with the same old stories. It seems like every book I’ve read is similar to another I’ve read. Where is the creativity? Where is the originality? I really wish, as a reader, I could discover a book that gave me all sorts of feelings (both happy and sad) and the aha moment.

So here’s my top five books that are the most creative, most original books I’ve had the pleasure to read. I’d love to hear the books that did the same for you so please share in the comments below.

The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings (the Hobbit / the Fellowship of the Ring / the Two Towers / the Mass Market by J.R.R. Tolkien  (Author)

Immerse yourself in Middle-earth with Tolkien’s classic masterpiece, telling the complete story of Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits’ epic encounters with Gandalf, Gollum, dragons and monsters, in the quest to destroy the One Ring. When they were first published, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings became instant classics. Treasured by readers young and old, these works of sweeping fantasy, steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness have sold more than 150 million copies around the world. This new boxed set, published to mark the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, offers readers a new opportunity to discover Tolkien’s remarkable world of Middle-earth and to follow the complete story of Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits’ part in the epic quest for the Ring – beginning with Bilbo’s fateful visit from Gandalf and culminating in the dramatic climax between Frodo and Gollum atop Mount Doom and Bilbo’s departure to the Grey Havens.

My Reaction – When I first read these immortal classics, I was blown away by the action, adventure, magic and characters. I loved how real the characters and Middle Earth were to me as a reader and while many have tried to imitate Tolkien, a few have come close but nothing as original as this.

A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux  (Author)

New York Times bestselling author Jude Deveraux will capture your heart with signature classic novel, a time-travel romance featuring a present-day heroine and a dashing hero from the sixteenth century!

Abandoned by a cruel fate, lovely Dougless Montgomery lies weeping upon a cold tombstone in an English church. Suddenly, the most extraordinary man appears. It is Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck…and according to his tombstone he died in 1564.

Drawn to his side by a bond so sudden and compelling it overshadows reason, Dougless knows that Nicholas is nothing less than a miracle: a man who does not seek to change her, who finds her perfect, fascinating, just as she is. What Dougless never imagined was how strong the chains are that tie them to the past…or the grand adventure that lay before them.

Hailed worldwide as one of the most romantic novels of all time, A Knight in Shining Armor is “a glorious love story that spans centuries, worlds, and souls. It is the epitome of every woman’s fantasy” (Chicago Daily Herald).

My Reaction – I know it’s hard to not run into familiar tropes when it comes to romance but none of the time travel romances rival what I felt when I first read this book. Vivid descriptive narration with a sweeping romance spanning centuries make this an original.

Tell No One: A Novel by Harlan Coben  (Author)

For Dr. David Beck, the loss was shattering. And every day for the past eight years, he has relived the horror of what happened. The gleaming lake. The pale moonlight. The piercing screams. The night his wife was taken. The last night he saw her alive.

Everyone tells him it’s time to move on, to forget the past once and for all. But for David Beck, there can be no closure. A message has appeared on his computer, a phrase only he and his dead wife know. Suddenly Beck is taunted with the impossible—that somewhere, somehow, Elizabeth is alive.

Beck has been warned to tell no one. And he doesn’t. Instead, he runs from the people he trusts the most, plunging headlong into a search for the shadowy figure whose messages hold out a desperate hope.

But already Beck is being hunted down. He’s headed straight into the heart of a dark and deadly secret—and someone intends to stop him before he gets there.

My Reaction – Suspense books are tricky to rate its originality because they all go by a certain formula. What makes this book stand out is the way the author slowly draws out the plot. He creates panic in the reader and you have to keep reading to see what happens. Beck is one of the greatest characters ever written and even with Coben’s future work, he wasn’t able to capture the magic of this book.

Ballet Shoes: A Story of Three Children on the Stage by Noel Streatfeild  (Author)

Pauline, was rescued from a shipwreck as a baby. She longs to be an actress.

Petrova, is a Russian orphan. She is happiest when playing with cars and engines.

Polly was handed over with just a pair of ballet shoes to her name. If she could, she would dance all day!

But one thing they DO have in common is, that with money running out at home and Great Uncle Matthew missing, the sisters want to stay together. Whatever it takes.

As they prepare for a dazzling life on stage, the dreams and fears of the fossil girls are about to come true…

My Reaction – Children’s books today are rife with angst and strife and I long for the days of original children’s fiction made to illicit dreams of little girls everywhere. I so wanted to be a dancer when I was little and I got to live out my dream when reading this book. More books need to inspire kids through unique characters and a little conflict (not tons of conflict).

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain  (Author)

Kitchen Confidential reveals what Bourdain calls “twenty-five years of sex, drugs, bad behavior and haute cuisine.”

Last summer, The New Yorker published Chef Bourdain’s shocking, “Don’t Eat Before Reading This.” Bourdain spared no one’s appetite when he told all about what happens behind the kitchen door. Bourdain uses the same “take-no-prisoners” attitude in his deliciously funny and shockingly delectable book, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike. From Bourdain’s first oyster in the Gironde, to his lowly position as dishwasher in a honky tonk fish restaurant in Provincetown (where he witnesses for the first time the real delights of being a chef); from the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, to drug dealers in the east village, from Tokyo to Paris and back to New York again, Bourdain’s tales of the kitchen are as passionate as they are unpredictable. Kitchen Confidential will make your mouth water while your belly aches with laughter. You’ll beg the chef for more, please.

My Reaction – When this first came out, the world was shocked. Someone telling the truth about what happens in the restaurant industry? Scandalous and oh so irresistible to read!  I want to read original stories about real life happening to real people. No need to add extra intrigue, conflict and drama because I want an unvarnished account. It’s why I love reading blogs nowadays. Bloggers tell it like it is without a filter and that’s what I crave.

Charm School Night Play Lesson 3 by @LynnCarmer #romance #eroticromance #romanticcomedy

Charm School_3

Title: Charm School Night Play Lesson 3

Author: Lynn Carmer

Genre: Multicultural Romance/ Romantic Comedy/ Erotic Romance

Book Blurb:

She wants a sizzling fling…

Athena Calvo is as tough as nails.

She’s also newly divorced and emotionally vulnerable. To get herself back out on the dating scene, she volunteers to teach the next charm school class: Sensation Play. She immerses herself in blindfolds, silk scarves, wax play, and more! She knows Tommy Lagos wants to help her with hands-on research, but she’s looking for a short term commitment. There’s just one problem.

He wants forever…

Tommy Lagos never takes life too seriously.

He is a beast in the ring and between the sheets. His shredded muscles and wicked charm have taken him far, but behind his cocky grin lives ambition, fire, and a drive to fight for everything that matters—especially Athena. He knows he can seduce her into giving him more than a few days.

He will own her body, one blindfold at a time, but will he be able to seduce her into risking her guarded heart?

Excerpt:

Tommy’s eyes ran over the goddess standing in front of him, her burnt lilac hair brushing her tattooed shoulder. She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m gonna make her mine. “I meant what I said. I want to help you with the class.”

Athena looked down and scuffed her shoe against the damp grass. “Tommy, listen, you’re a great guy—”

“Dare told me what it’s about.”

Her head snapped up. “What exactly did he tell you?”

“He told me about the past two classes, and the…subject of each class.” He was getting hot under his non-existent collar, not from embarrassment but because he imagined Athena experimenting with him.

“He told you what my class is about?”

He crossed his arms and cocked his head to the side. “Hell, yeah. That’s the first thing I asked.”

“And you understand”—her searing gaze swept down his primed body—“what that means?”

He stepped forward, his fists clenched. “Intimately.”

“From research or experience?”

He grinned, loving how she gnawed at her plump, bottom lip. “I’m an MMA trainer, stressing kinetic learning in all of my classes. That means hands-on. Always.” He traced a finger along her cheek and over the stubborn cleft in her chin. “Let me help you.”

She shook her head and took two big steps back. “I think there are no bigger con artists on the planet than the Lagos’ boys.”

“Trust me.” Tommy’s Spider-sense was tingling. Her cheeks were flushed, she was having a hard time meeting his eyes. She would never admit it, but she was interested.

Then she knocked him on his butt by demanding, “Prove it.”

“Here? Now?” He looked over at her and the hotdog-shaped dog at her feet.

“See? You have no idea what sensation play is or you’d have listed five different techniques already. Like I said. Con artist.” She adjusted her mutt’s collar. “Come on, Fitzy, I’m done with amateur hour.”

Tommy’s whole body went on alert. Athena was fire, a barely banked inferno. He could feel the smoldering blaze living under her bronzed skin, and he only had minutes to convince her to give him a chance. Because he wanted to revel in that firestorm, bask in it for as long as she’d let him. He blocked her path and stepped in close.

“If you’re a beginner, I recommend, silk scarves, rose petals, maybe some feathers that I would trail over your skin.”

Athena stutter-stepped and came to a halt.

“When you’re comfortable, I’ll use something a little more intense, ice cubes, hot wax…”

Her breath shallowed, her chest rising and falling with each indrawn breath. She slowly turned, her hazel eyes narrowing in on him.

He was greedy for more than just her gaze. “When you trust me, when you truly give your body to mine, I’ll cover your beautiful eyes and tie you up. Mute your hearing so…”

“Stop.”

“No.” His head spun, the sizzle of her heated skin only inches from his. He would get past her defenses. Athena’s reservations were more than shallow excuses. “I’m defending myself.”

Her breath hitched, and she stepped forward.

“We may even have to discuss a safe word if you—”

“Enough.” She slapped a hand over his mouth and laughed softly. “I take it back, I swear. Just stop—”

He nipped at her palm and then kissed it when she yelped.

“Damn, Tommy. You really are a surprise.” Her thumb brushed his lower lip, and her narrowed gaze caressed his face.

“Athena.” Say yes.

She dropped her hand. “But my answer is still…no.”
