Friday Book Round-Up Spotlights a #RomanticSuspense Author #books #FridayReads

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of romantic suspense. One of the Christmas gifts I received from MR N was a book by Paula Graves. I just finished reading it and while I was looking it up online, I found out Paula passed away recently. I was saddened because not only was she fairly young, she’s a talented writer. Today’s Friday Book Round-Up is spotlighting many of her books (along with my review for the book I read). If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, please read one (or many) of her books.

The Girl Who Cried Murder (Campbell Cove Academy)

A cold case is reopened, placing a witness in the crosshairs—and a bodyguard by her side…

Charlie Winters has caught security expert Mike Strong’s attention. A member of his self-defense class, she seems to need to know more than just how to protect herself. After a little digging, Mike discovers that the cute redhead has a reason to worry—she may have witnessed a murder. Using all of his connections, Mike tries to solve the cold case. But as Charlie’s memories from the past begin to resurface, her future seems marked for death. Offering up his skills as a bodyguard, Mike promises not to leave her side. And Charlie’s obvious relief at not having to fight alone convinces him there’s much more to this mystery he has yet to uncover.

My Review:

Ten years ago, Charlie’s best friend is killed in a hit and run accident. Memories are haunting Charlie and she starts asking questions. Someone is following Charlie and everything points to murder. Charlie signs up for a self-defense class just in case and piques the interest of ex-Marine Mike Strong. Mike offers to be her bodyguard and help her solve her friend’s murder after a few attempts are made on Charlie’s life.

Mike has never met anyone like Charlie and the more he’s around her, the more he craves her company. But someone is out to get her and Mike’s instincts kick in. Just when things are heating up between he and Charlie, the murderer gets reckless and goes after Mike. Will they survive this killer or is Charlie just The Girl Who Cried Murder?

I really loved this romantic suspense. Filled with twists and turns, Graves does a magnificent job weaving in romance with suspense. I loved that Charlie is independent and from the wrong side of the tracks. Charlie and Mike are a fantastic couple, feeding off each other’s strengths and nurturing each other’s weaknesses. A superb read and can’t wait to read more!

My Rating: 5+ stars

Fugitive Bride (Campbell Cove Academy)

THE BEST MAN…IN EVERY WAY

Watching his best friend marry the wrong man is Owen Stiles’s worst nightmare…until he and the would-be bride are kidnapped. Someone wants Tara Bentley out of the picture, enough to frame her for the murder of her fiancé. All that stands between Tara and destruction is Campbell Cove security agent Owen.

Moments away from calling off her wedding, Tara’s life is turned upside down. Now the man she’s always considered her best bud has transformed into some kind of sexy special agent. Owen is prepared to do anything to clear her name and secure her safety. But who’s keeping her heart safe from him?

Operation Nanny (Campbell Cove Academy)

WANTED: NANNY

MUST BE GOOD WITH WET WIPES AND GUNS.

Lacey Miles becomes the unexpected sole guardian of her young niece. Knee-deep into an investigation of a sleeper cell, Lacey finds that motherhood is a lot more perilous than she expected, so she hires a nanny with an impeccable résumé…who’s a far cry from Mary Poppins.

Beneath his friendly demeanor, Jim Mercer is a former Marine turned undercover agent, tasked with ferreting out the terrorists targeting Lacey and her loved ones. Jim may be the ultimate caretaker, but the closer Lacey comes to blowing her case open, the more Jim’s true identity is revealed. And the deeper he falls for this vulnerable little family.

Kentucky Confidential (Campbell Cove Academy)

The return of the wife he thought was lost and a baby he never knew existed will make this a Christmas to remember…

Captain Connor McGinnis has seen a ghost. Staring at a surveillance photo of a Kaziri immigrant, there can be no mistaking that the starkly beautiful—and visibly pregnant—woman in a head scarf is his wife, Risa. The woman he presumed was dead after her plane crashed into the ocean.

Risa McGinnis, relocated by the CIA when they learned of a price on her head, has settled into the guise of a widowed immigrant. Confronting Connor again resurrects sweet memories and a burning passion. But until this unknown enemy is captured, Risa must focus more on Connor’s protection than on their attraction. After all, the strength of her marriage—and the safety of her baby—depends on it…

Smoky Mountain Setup (The Gates: Most Wanted)

Coming in from the cold had never been so heated by an old attraction

On the run for two years, former FBI agent Cade Landry has only one person he can turn to: Olivia Sharp, his former partner—and lover. But after all this time, trusting the beauty is sure to put both their lives on the line. Taking that risk, Cade braves a raging storm to seek her help. The moment they’re reunited, and with no time to explore their reignited passion or the case that tore them apart, they must focus on bringing a band of domestic terrorists to justice. Hurtling them through snow-choked mountains into harrowing danger, Cade feels the pressure of what’s at stake: his future, Olivia’s life…and a love that never died.

Boneyard Ridge (The Gates Book 3)

Completing his latest assignment could impact investigator Hunter Bragg’s future. But only if he can keep Susannah Marsh alive.

All Hunter Bragg wanted in Purgatory, Tennessee, was a little peace of mind. A private investigator plagued by his own guilt, he never imagined his next job would resurrect old demons. Targeted by an anarchistic militia group, events planner Susannah Marsh is his next mission: keep her close…keep her alive. But Susannah has a secret. A secret that will reveal the true motive of her potential assailants. For Hunter, being Susannah’s protector soon becomes more than just a job. And in order to succeed, there can be no half measures. With undeniable attraction simmering between them, he’s determined not to let the promise of a better future fall into the hands of ruthless predators.

What’s Love Got to Do With It? @LiviaQuinn Says Everything! #romance #FridayReads #books

Oh oh oh, what’s love got to do with it, got to do with it? In the case of romance, everything!

One of the reasons romance is the most popular genre in the world is the emotional connection we feel with the hero and heroine as they overcome obstacles to be together. And there’s something for everyone – small town, sweet, contemporary, historical, suspense, thriller, military, erotic, steampunk, paranormal…the list goes on.

When I read men’s or women’s fiction, while I enjoy the story, I’m not nearly as invested unless there’s a building relationship between the hero and his significant other. With romance, I can enjoy the ride knowing there will be a happily-ever-after, or, in these days of series, at least a happy for now. One of my favorites is a Sandra Brown romance thriller. While I’m not likely to encounter a sexy undercover FBI agent on my doorstep, imagining a happy-ever-after that comes out of the blue is thrilling and makes for a great escape.

In my book Blame it On the Moon, Sheriff Jack Lang is preparing to fight the supernatural bad guys he hadn’t even known existed a couple weeks before, while his girlfriend, Tempest Pomeroy and others lie fading from the effects of the Para-moon. Everything – their lives, their relationship and the safety of the world beyond Destiny is in the balance. He can’t lose this fight.

What is your favorite genre of romance and why?

Blame it on the Moon Blurb:

It’s the height of the Para-moon and Sheriff Jack Lang is up to his ‘6’ in alligators. Defending those weaker than himself is in his DNA which is what drove him to become a Navy pilot. Who is he kidding? Alligators he could handle! But supernatural bad guys…

Ragtag doesn’t begin to describe his band of temporary ’heroes’. If he has to go to war with the group that showed up at dawn, he might as well start cutting up white sheets and attaching them to garden stakes.

With Tempe and the other Paramortals ill or incapacitated and the sudden appearance of beings he’s never heard of, will Jack be able to keep Destiny out of the hands of their enemies for the rest of the power down and—very important—keep the humans in the dark?

It’s only twenty-four hours. If worse comes to worse, he has a dragon on his side and a few surprises up his sleeve. “Yippe, ki, yi…” But a lot can happen in twenty-four hours and things don’t always go as planned.

Excerpt:

(Conor and Montana visit the Faerie King)

“Oomph!” I sprang to my feet, ready to fight if it was a trick and to give Conor a talking-to but the three were already nearing the porch, leaving me to bring up the rear.

I heard the chorus of excited fairies before I made it to the front door.

“It’s a dwagon. A weel dwagon,” two seemingly young voices screamed.

“He’s beautiful.” That was a low pitched sultry sounding faerie that sent my hackles up.

“Mr. Dwagon, can I touch your scales…”

“Can you bwiev fire?” Finally, a male voice.

The excitement went on until finally, stranded outside the monstrous entrance until I could get someone’s attention I yelled, “Can I get a word in with Petre and Arabella please? We’re on time clock here.”

Every face in the Inn— all shapes, sizes, and colors of fairie turned to me and I realized I’d underestimated the race, understanding now, too late, the size of a fairy was of no consequence. Having a twenty-foot tall king was like a colossal diversion. It gave one a feeling of superiority as if there were only two fae who could be a threat when in actuality it was a house full of deadly assassins, who could kill a hundred different ways—each.

Even the tiniest pixie seated on Petre’s long narrow leg could probably kill me. This was an entirely magical world and I was out of my depth. The minuscule little fairy on Petre’s knee shivered with the desire to take me on. It was written all over his face from his angry glowing eyes to his posture which was leaning forward from his desire to attack, only Petre’s thumb on his backside keeping him from leaping the distance to my throat.

I cleared my throat and tried to scrape up a modicum of humility. I knew what the word meant but like my thoughts earlier on arrogance, I hadn’t had much call for this trait either, and quite frankly hadn’t ever seen a use for it.

Conor waited for me to dig myself out of the hole I’d dug. His brow lifted, waiting. Petre looked like he wanted to let the little fairie have his way. Only Arabella looked as if she understood my outburst. She was Tempe’s friend so she knew me by extension of that friendship.

I kept my eyes on Bella’s. Was she trying to send me a message? Try a little humble pie.

“I… apologize, King, to you and all of your…er…subjects…er, family. I am a warrior and…” The truth will do. I heard the voice in my head and looked back at Arabella who smiled. The truth, right. I started over. “I do apologize. My urgency and warrior nature leaves me little regard for diplomacy. That is something I must learn obviously. May I enter and speak with you about our current crisis? Time really is of the essence.”

Conor’s shoulders relaxed and I felt a squeeze of my heart when I saw his swords, which had been lifted a half a foot out of the sheath behind his shoulders, settle back into place at the ready should we need to fight our way out. He smiled at me. It made me feel all gooey inside. Sheesh, these emotions were new, totally new, like never in four hundred years new.

Petre’s friendly facade went dark, his face and the musculature in his body changed, the bones nearly protruding through the skin, giving him the appearance of a deadly predator with a long menacing mouthful of razor like teeth. A glance at the other formally cheerful fae revealed similar changes. And the glowing green eyes and household now all looked at me like I was the next course.

For the first time in my life I felt a strong compunction to run, not out of fear— Okay, I could admit to a bit of healthy fear—just this once I would have run, though I doubted it would have done any good without my Dinnshencha power. The vamp gave me speed and strength but I was badly outnumbered by a species that were actually superior to vamps in many ways. Good thing I had Conor. I noticed even Petre cut his eyes toward Conor. The desire to eat me must be pretty strong. Better deliver the message before they lost control.

“Um, I know you’d prefer to eat me more than listen to me, or divide me up with the clan…”

Petre growled, “I don’t share…”

I heard Conor swords slip out of their sheaths. Petre’s posture relaxed slightly. “I was asked to inform you of the Chaos and beg your assistance.” Petre’s eyes flared and the view of his teeth became more prominent as he gave what I assumed – that comment seemed to give him particular pleasure.

And if birds could be said to roll their eyes, I would swear that’s what Petre’s Queen had aimed in his direction. Then Petre said, “Kneel, vampire.”

A Heart Made For Love by Linda Tillis @Linda34434 #historicalromance #TWRP #romance

aheartmadeforlove_w10250_newcouple_final

Title – A Heart Made For Love

Author – Linda Tillis

Genre – Historical/Inspirational Romance

Publisher –  The Wild Rose Press

Book Blurb –

In rural Florida, 1903, Mae Hinton cares for her father and younger brothers, trying to fill her deceased mother’s shoes. Her life is shattered and her faith tested when her innocence is stolen by roving miscreants. Left unconscious, unable to identify her attackers, she pledges to help other victimized women. She pursues an education and learns to deal with bigoted ministers, well-to-do hypocrites, and men with higher regard for their livestock than their women.

Edward Finch is nearly done with medical studies in England when he comes home for the holidays. Love flourishes, and Mae seems close to achieving her dreams of both true love and a haven for victims, once she can explain to him why she carries a pistol. Then her new-found happiness is upset by a murder as one of her attackers returns.

She may settle this herself…or she may find that vengeance truly belongs to God.

Excerpt –

A faint breeze drifted across the balcony, bringing a whiff of something that brought Mae out of her daydream and began a growing sense of unease.

As her nose caught the elusive scent again, her stomach tightened and she began to tremble. The fragrance, wafting in and out of the reach of her memory, was lemongrass. Mae understood it was unreasonable to be this frightened by a hint of lemongrass on the breeze, and she’d almost calmed her foolish nerves when she became aware of male voices. Right behind the palm trees at her shoulders, one of the men said something she could not understand, and then the second one spoke: “Perhaps this is not such a good idea after all.”

Mae wanted to stand, to run, to scream, but she found herself frozen to the bench. Time stood still. She could no longer hear anything. There was just the roaring in her head. She could see Patrick clapping his hands and jumping up and down as the fireworks display illuminated the evening sky. Everyone on the balcony was staring off to the north, where the beautiful colored lights made intricate patterns in the air.

Mae could only hear her inner roar — the sound of the culmination of a fear so strong she was almost paralyzed by it. The only sound she made was the soft rustling of her satin dress as she first stood, then collapsed as if her bones had melted. It was a good minute or two before anyone became aware that the young woman lying on the balcony floor had fainted dead away.

Crashing Into Me by @AuthorRLJackson #romance #books #amreading

crashingintome

Title: Crashing Into Me

Author: R.L Jackson

Genre: Romance

Book Blurb:

A year after being left at the altar, headstrong E.R Nurse, Lana McKenzie is finally piecing her life back together. Tired of dealing with seeing her ex and his new girlfriend at every turn, she longs for blissful solitude and can’t wait to enjoy a peaceful vacation alone in the mountains. However, her plans go awry when a rude stranger literally embeds himself into her life and mind.

Handsome, wealthy, and troubled, Kayden Capshaw is struggling with the death of his brother, while also trying to escape the claws of his controlling mother. In his grief, the last thing Kayden wants to deal with is the fallout from his last run in with the law. Yet, he also longs to get to know the woman now snowed in with him at the house on the hill.

The ice between them thaws every minute they spend together, and they find that they have more in common than they realize. Will they find a way to make it through, or will it all, like the snow, melt away?

Excerpt:

Lana sat in the truck and watched the Tesla speed away. He was driving way too fast for someone she was supposed to be following. She started the truck and pulled onto the roadway and hit the gas. He was running! She should’ve known better and called the police—it served her right. It didn’t take a genius to see that she reacted to him like a grade school crush and when he caught on, he played her like a fiddle. Lana slammed her hands down on the steering wheel as she accelerated towards the car from hell. As hard as she pressed the pedal, the aging Ford couldn’t catch up to the Tesla. As her truck went up a steep hill in the road and came back down, the Tesla was nowhere in sight.

“Damn it!” she yelled, and took her foot off the gas, letting the vehicle slow down to speeds it was more accustomed.

She glanced down at the business card in the middle console and rolled her eyes. Kayden Capshaw had probably spent his entire life getting out of things like this because of his looks and she was just his newest victim. Taking another deep breath, the cherry car freshener slammed into her nostrils and made her feel nauseous. She grabbed it off the rearview mirror, rolled the window down and threw it out.

She knew she’d have to find a way to track him down and make him pay for her truck, but that was tomorrow’s problem. She just wanted to get off the road and make it the rest of the way to Hamby, safe and sound. As pissed as she was with him, she couldn’t get his gaze and those eyes out of her mind. She wiped the thought away and for the first time in a long time she wished her car radio actually worked.

Shot and Left for Dead… Lies, Love and Redemption by @KWilkinsauthor #romance #western

liesloveredemption-med-cover

Title: Lies, Love & Redemption

Author: Kelli A. Wilkins

Genre: Historical/Western romance

Blurb:

Lies, Love & Redemption

Shot and left for dead, Sam Hixton stumbles into a general store on the Nebraska prairie and collapses into the arms of Cassie Wilcox.

Cassie’s world is turned upside down when the handsome stranger drops into her life. Sam is another complication she doesn’t need: her business is dying and her trouble with the townspeople is escalating. Yet she’s determined to keep the store open — no matter what the cost.

As Sam recovers from his injuries, he hides the truth about his identity and convinces Cassie to let him work in the store. He’s attracted to her and admires her independent nature but quickly realizes Cassie’s in way over her head. They fight their growing attraction, and Cassie questions whether she can trust her fragile heart to a mysterious stranger. Will he accept her once he knows about her troubled past?

Cassie resists Sam’s advances and represses her feelings until one fateful night when they give in to their fiery passion. Together, they work out a plan to save the store but find their efforts are thwarted—and their lives endangered—by the locals.

Sam’s secret returns to haunt him and pulls him away just when Cassie needs him the most. Will he regain her trust when she learns the truth?

Cassie has everything invested in the store—can she save it and find true love with Sam before it’s too late?

Excerpt:

Cassie dusted off a can of apricots and restacked it on the shelf. “Why do I even bother?” she muttered as she picked up the next can.

Another week had come and gone, but her days were always the same. Get up at dawn, sweep out the store, dust off the cans, and . . . wait. Her few customers strolled in on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to buy odds and ends, but nearly everyone bought their bulk goods at the general store in Baxter. Townsfolk came here only when they wanted something quick—or on credit.

The bell above the door jangled, but she didn’t bother to turn around. “That you, Luke? You’re up early. I bet you haven’t seen this side of ten o’clock in—”

She glanced over her shoulder and shrieked. The can of apricots slipped from her hand and rolled across the floor.

A stranger covered in blood leaned against the doorjamb.

She rushed to his side. “Who are you? What happened?”

The man locked his blue eyes onto hers. “Help me.”

He held a battered leather satchel out to her. “Hide this,” he said, then collapsed forward.

Cassie caught him around the waist and eased him to the plank floor. Was he dead? She felt the side of his sweaty neck. His heart was beating, but he looked like hell. His clothes were coated in blood and dirt, and his face had a sickly white hue to it. He was lucky to be alive. Someone had shot him full of holes.

Where had he come from? Holloway was in the middle of nowhere with no railroad connection, and it wasn’t on the stagecoach line. She hadn’t heard a horse out front, and he couldn’t have walked here from Baxter, could he? That would be suicide.

Wild ideas raced through her mind as she stared down at him. Maybe he was a fugitive or a bank robber. Decent people didn’t get themselves shot for no reason. Whoever shot him could’ve been following him, looking to finish him off.

Her gaze settled on the satchel. What was in it? Money? Gold? The deed to a silver mine? Why did he want her to hide it?

Cassie brushed her hair away from her face and frowned. What the hell was she supposed to do with him? Why had he wandered into her store, of all places? The last thing she needed was a half-dead stranger complicating her life. His being here would only stir up trouble—and she already had more than she needed.

Maybe she could— With a start, she realized he hadn’t moved. She shook his bloodied left shoulder.  The man remained motionless. “Damn it to hell.” She yanked the satchel from his grip, then ran behind the counter and stuffed it in the bottom drawer. There wasn’t time to look inside and see what the stranger was hiding. Whoever he was, he needed help—fast.

February 14th is the Most Romantic Day of the Year… or is it? #ValentinesDay #inspiration #love

febraury-love-month-graphic

Joelle, My True Love

My thoughts are of you

Of how your caresses

Light a fire in my soul.

Of how your pretty smile

Brightens my whole day

How simply being near you

Takes the dark clouds away.

I love you with all my heart

My mind, body and soul

You will be my beloved wife

This truly will be my joy.

© 2016 Poetry of Love: The Engagement Year by N. N. Light, All rights reserved

Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s time to talk about romantic love and I dedicate this day and inspirational thought to the man who taught me the real meaning of love, Mr. N.

From the time I was three, I dreamt of my Prince Charming, the handsome man who would love me and make all my dreams come true. I know it sounds like the total cliche but that is exactly what Mr. N did.

The fairy tale didn’t go exactly like it is portrayed by Disney. In fact, I broke Mr. N’s heart twice. Yup, I broke up with him twice, crushing him deeply. It wasn’t until I looked deep into his eyes (for the third time) and saw the unconditional love there that I realized Mr. N’s real name is Prince Charming.

The above poem Mr. N wrote to me on Valentine’s Day when we were engaged. He had to work a double-shift at the restaurant (18 hours) and it tore us both apart that we had to be away from each other on Valentine’s Day. Such is the life of a chef and his beloved but we made the best of it and when he got home, he shared his poem with me. ❤

Nowadays, we don’t celebrate our engagement anniversary on Valentine’s Day but on the weekend following. We call it Love Weekend and it’s a three-day weekend chockful of delicious food, cocktails and romantic movies. We look forward to it every year and it’s one of the ways we keep our marriage burning hot. 😉

This Valentine’s Day, if you’re in a relationship, be sure to take a moment to tell your beloved how much you love them. You don’t have to go out to a fancy restaurant or spend a lot of money on gifts and flowers to show you care. Spending time with your beloved and showering them with your kindness and love is the best gift you can give.

A note to singles: Listen, I know this is a hard day for you. Everyone around you is gushing about romantic love. Take today and shower yourself with love. Don’t throw a pity party but cherish yourself and indulge in something decadent. You’re beautiful and I love you!

Spread Love and Light!

Author J.M. Maurer

Genre Contemporary Romance 18+

Book Blurb

Three years after a bitter divorce, Jessica Winters isn’t sure she’s ready—or capable—to move on. The thought of another relationship terrifies her, but things quickly change when she meets the playfully witty and handsome sex therapist Matthew Moi. At first, she tries to ignore him, but something in the way he levels his sultry gaze on her awakens her soul.

Secretly in love with Jessica, Matthew has been giving her the space she needed to heal. Incapable of waiting any longer and eager to work his way into her broken heart, he seizes an opportunity to have their paths cross. But when her painful past resurfaces, revealing truths that threaten their future, Matthew must prove to Jessica that a shot at true love is worth the risk.

Excerpt

One thing I knew: I wasn’t that woman anymore. I wouldn’t be her anymore.

My heart was racing at the thought of being separated from Matthew by only the door, and I watched as it opened, knowing he stood mere feet away. I drew in a deep breath to calm my frantic nerves and steady my racing heart. It was the moment my eyes would see him again, and the same moment I knew all involuntary muscle movements would cease.

As Matthew stepped in and around the door, his alluring eyes captured me. The feeling was nothing new. I’d been imprisoned by his gaze before. And locked in it again, I watched as he drifted to me, the indisputable chemistry between us palpable and absolute. His mesmerizing eyes had hypnotized my burning soul, completely bewitching me.

“Hello, Jessica,” he murmured, pointing to an open area of the bed. “Mind if I sit?”

I gave a slight shake of my head, having difficulty forming the simple word “no,” and watched as he made himself comfortable facing me. His crisp charcoal-colored trousers bunched as he scooted on the bed. My sight roamed along his classic plum-colored dress shirt and stopped searching once I focused on his face.

Title Seeking Redemption (Book 2)

Author J.M. Maurer

Genre Contemporary Romance 18+

But despite what life throws her way, Jessica pledges to put the past in the past, accepting that events are often out of her control. Excerpt

“Jess!” The strained howl of my name traveled through the air and instinctively I twisted, searching out the voice I’d been aching to hear.

I scoured the streets beyond the emergency vehicles that were now barricading the intersection before me, and my body sparked with fiery life when I saw Matthew. From up the street, he ran at a full sprint toward me, shoved his phone into the pocket of his jeans, and locked his eyes with mine, his wavy hair blowing wildly in the wind.

I ran to him, bridging the gap between us, and as soon as I could, threw my arms around him and cried.

He leaned back and ran his hands along my hair and cupped the sides of my face. “God, Jess.” He looked at me, his eyes full of love and concern, and scanned my body for injuries. “Do you need to go to the ER?”

I shook my head. “It happened in front of me. I’m anxious and worried, that’s all.”

“Want to go anyway?” he asked, kindhearted and soothing, his touch somehow slowing the beat of my racing heart.

He wasn’t asking because he wanted me checked out, although he might have wanted that too. Most likely he offered because he knew I’d need closure and wouldn’t be able to shake the events until I had it.

“I’d done my part, emergency responders had taken over, and now, even though I couldn’t stand him, Dr. Burdick was poised to oversee care. And with the best of care now tending to the boy, as hard as it was for me to do it, I had to let go.

“I did the best I could.” I frowned, my nerves calming from his tender touch.

“I’m sure you did.” He lifted my chin, a slight smile forming on his lips.

“Burdick will text you, let you know what’s going on, right?” He nodded and I sighed. “Then let’s go home.”

He bent forward and pressed his lips to mine, his kiss sweet and warm, but all too brief. “Home it is,” he murmured and pulled my hand to his, linking them together, and then walked us back to my car.

I pressed the button on my key fob to unlock my car, then looked back one last time, seeing the officers finish the cleanup as Matthew opened the front passenger door. I turned to him, reached out while looking up into his caring eyes, and placed my hand on his arm. “Where’s the Range Rover?”

“I ran here.”

“All the way?” I estimated his run across the river bridge at a mile, if not more.

A tear slid down my cheek, and Matthew’s shoulders sank as his grip circling my upper arms tightened. “I’d run across an ocean to get to you, Jess.”

I’d been given promises in the past, all of which were broken.
Inevitably, they broke me.
I wouldn’t let those broken promises stop me from believing in new ones, though.
I couldn’t.

Matthew Moi was different.
His dimpled smile and witty sexual banter has held me spellbound since day one.
Falling in love with him came easy.
Marrying him—a dream come true.

Now, he wants something I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready for.
As I struggle, he faithfully remains at my side.
Through it all, his protective nature shields me from an evil I didn’t see coming.

Excerpt

“Take a look at that.”

I turned, feeling both the boat as it glided across the water and the salty, moist air, and looked west. The brilliant amber color of the sun took away my breath. I smiled as Matthew snuggled in behind me at the edge of the boat. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me into him.

“This moment is perfect.” I looked over my shoulder, thinking about the sun as it kissed the sea, and locked my sight on Matthew. “This evening is perfect. Thank you.”

“My pleasure.” He tapped my lips with his. “How long do you think we have until the sun completely disappears?”

“A couple of minutes, maybe.” For me, it would never be long enough. I could gaze at the setting sun forever.

He squeezed his arms, tightening his hold on me, almost as if reading my mind. “Forever, we’ll have each other, and there’s not a sunset or a full moon that’s more beautiful than what we have. Our love is always and forever.”

I turned to him, seeing beyond the red sky of the night as it reflected in his eyes, and kissed him. I was grateful to be tucking this perfect two-minute-moment of time, our personal sailor’s delight, into my heart—forever.

Whirlwind Romance by @msspencerauthor #TWRP #romanticsuspense #Romance

Title: Whirlwind Romance

Author: M. S. Spencer

Genre: Romantic Suspense/Action Adventure

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Blurb:
In the aftermath of a hurricane, jelly maker Lacey Delahaye finds herself marooned on an island on the Gulf coast of Florida with a mysterious man. They are immediately drawn to each other, but before Armand can confess his identity, they are kidnapped and taken to a tiny island in the western Caribbean. There, Lacey finds herself faced with pirates, fanatical ideologues, and palace intrigue, not to mention the advances of three men, only one of whom she loves.

Excerpt: Slipping Briskly

The full moon shone through the window, illuminating Lacey’s nodding head. Armand touched her cheek. “I think it’s your bedtime.”

Stung, she shot back, “I’m taking care of you, remember?”

He held up a hand. “Sorry! I’d forgotten.” After a moment, he asked, his tone diffident, “Can you help me up?”

Lacey put an arm around his back and together they limped to Crispin’s room. She took his pants and shirt off and folded them neatly. As she turned to leave, he touched her arm. “Stay a minute?”

How could she admit she had to get out of there quickly or she wouldn’t be able to go at all? His handsome face—the strong chin covered with stubble, the pearly teeth contrasting with his tan skin, not to mention the long, graceful fingers he held out to her—all conspired to lure her closer. Her heart led the way, propelling her to his side. She sat down. “What is it?”

“Lacey…um.”

Her body tensed as desire fought to get out, and she fought just as hard to keep it in. I have to go. I have to…go. “What?”

His words came out in a rush. “Lacey, the other day—the first night—when you rescued me. When we…we…”

Don’t say it. Don’t say it. Christ.

“I…uh…want you to know I don’t do that on a regular basis.”

His air of shy ambivalence gave her courage. “I see. You don’t have sex on a regular basis?”

“No, no, it’s not that.” He stopped, flustered. “Er, I mean… I don’t sleep with women indiscriminately.”

Should she let him off the hook? Nah. “But you do sleep with a lot of women?”

“No! Lacey, you’re being difficult on purpose. I meant, that I didn’t mean to…you know. It just happened. Forgive me?”

“I—”

Armand interrupted her. “Not that it wasn’t enjoyable.” He seemed distracted, running a finger down her arm. “Wonderful. Fantastic. Too short.” He peered at her. “Lacey, you must know how beautiful you are. You have the most perfect cheekbones I’ve ever seen.”

“Cheekbones?” What the hell is he talking about?

“I’m an amateur photographer. Those cheekbones could belong to a supermodel. Perfectly sculpted. And your nose…” He tapped the tip. “A little pixie nose. It even turns up slightly. Your long, fine hair is the russet-gold of burnished copper pots I once saw piled high in a shop on Martinique. Your eyes…” He closed his. “Your eyes are the blue-green of a freshly mowed cricket field, of the emeralds that grow deep in the mountains, of the lagoon near my home on a blustery day.” He touched her hand. “Then there’s your body—as I remember it—a soft, comfortable, pillowy—”

“Hey!” Lacey shook her head to break the spell. “I think you’ve said enough. Get some sleep.”

She tried to rise, but he slipped his arms around her and drew her close. She wanted to struggle. She tried to struggle. It was no use. The long kiss filled her with a warmth that matched a fire on a cold night, a cup of cocoa, or a hot bath. When he lay back, the warmth turned to blazing passion. The power of it frightened her. I’ve got to go. She ran out of the room before he could stop her.

The Author Behind – and Within – The Ceruleans: @BookishCharlie #NA #Giveaway #books

ceruleans-poster

‘Every author in some way portrays himself in his works, even if it be against his will.’ I knew this quotation from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from my university days, but until I wrote The Ceruleans, I had no idea how accurate it is.

When I set out to write The Ceruleans series, I knew there would be something of myself in it, because a central concept in the first book, Death Wish, of grief in the aftermath of losing a loved one, was inspired by my own experiences. ‘Write what you know’ is an old adage and a good one; I know grief, so I decided to write about grief.

I did not, however, intend to write five books that so closely aligned to my own emotional journey. As I write in the author’s note at the end of Book 5: ‘The story isn’t my own, but the feelings are, and it has been dark and deep and beautiful to share these truths with you.

Neither did I intend to write a heroine with such a similar disposition to me. Scarlett differs from me in some pretty significant ways, but her sensitivity and her desire for a quiet life come directly from me. Would I like to live in cottage on a cliff in a sleepy Devonshire cove? Absolutely!

Remember Goethe’s words ‘even if it be against his will’? As a writer, when you discover you are exposing parts of yourself through fiction, you feel vulnerable; and that drives a desire to hack away at the manuscript, stripping yourself out. I could have rewritten The Ceruleans with a more thick-skinned heroine and less emotional resonance. I didn’t, though, because where’s the meaning in that?

As Franz Kafka put it, ‘Writing is utter solitude, the descent into the cold abyss of oneself.’ Publishing your writing, however, offers a way out of that solitude – if you’ve been honest and brave enough to infuse the writing with elements of yourself, so that you are not merely the author behind the words, but the author within the words.

the-ceruleans-book-1

Death Wish (The Ceruleans I) by Charlotte Wilson

IN SEARCH OF THE MEANING OF DEATH, SHE’LL FIND THE MEANING OF LIFE.

Seventeen-year-old Scarlett Blake is haunted by death. Her sister has made the ultimate dramatic exit: run away from school, join a surfing fraternity, drown in a tragic ‘accident’.

Following in her sister’s footsteps, Scarlett comes to an isolated English cove to uncover the truth. And, as it turns out, to fall in love with the place and its people, especially a certain blue-eyed surfer with a serious case of the heroics.

But as Scarlett’s quest for the truth unravels, so too does her grip on reality as she’s always known it. Because there’s something strange going on in this little cove. A dead magpie circles the skies. A dead deer watches from the undergrowth. Hands glow with light. Power.

What transpires is a summer of discovery: of what it means to conquer fear, to fall in love, to choose life, to choose death.

To believe the impossible.

the-ceruleans-book-2

Forget Me Not (The Ceruleans II) by Charlotte Wilson

IN THE FACE OF DEATH, SHE MUST PROTECT THOSE SHE LOVES.

Death is stalking Scarlett Blake. As if the encroaching darkness in her head wasn’t enough, she’s become disturbingly accident prone. Falling off a cliff isn’t ideal when all you want is as much time as possible to live the life you love.

But the clock is ticking, louder with every heartbeat, and now Scarlett must decide how best to protect the people she loves.

Will she trust in Jude and the life-after-death he promises? Will she stand against the Fallen, who have her sister captive? Will she carry the burden of her death alone – every headache, every hallucination, every harrowing emotion?

And when the clock falls silent, will Scarlett fight for life? Or will she surrender to the one who’s determined to kill her?

the-ceruleans-book-3

Wild Blue Yonder (The Ceruleans III) by Charlotte Wilson

IN A WARPED HEAVEN, SHE MUST CHOOSE HER FATE: OBEDIENCE OR REBELLION

When Scarlett Blake chose to Become a Cerulean, she expected to grieve for all she left behind. But at least Cerulea, her heaven, would be… well, heavenly. Right?

Wrong. The world in which Scarlett awakens is picturesque, sure, and serene. But there can be no paradise within the unforgiving walls of a prison, be they of cold, hard stone or beautifully blue water.

Now Scarlett faces her hardest decision yet: be a good, dutiful Cerulean, or be true to herself and fight for freedom.

And if she can find a way to escape, what then? Can she save her sister from the murderous Fallen? Can she evade her destiny with the Ceruleans? Can she ever reclaim her life-before-death… or must she let go of all she loves?

the-ceruleans-book-4

Devil and the Deep (The Ceruleans IV) by Charlotte Wilson

STORM CLOUDS ARE GATHERING, AND THEY WILL RAIN BLOOD.

Scarlett is living her happy-ever-after, back in the real world. Only the ‘happy’ part is proving problematic.

For starters, there’s the isolation. Being a Cerulean among humans is fraught with risk, so time with those she loves can only be fleeting.

Then there’s her power over life and death. Less awesome talent, as it turns out, and more overwhelming responsibility – and it comes with rules that are increasingly difficult to obey.

But what’s really pushing Scarlett to the precipice is something much bigger than her life in the cove. A force to be reckoned with: blood.

When long-buried truths are exposed, will Scarlett keep her head above water – or will she drown in the blood-dimmed tide that is unleashed?

the-ceruleans-book-5

Darkly, Deeply, Beautifully (The Ceruleans V) by Charlotte Wilson

DARKNESS HAS FALLEN, AND SHE ALONE WILL SEE THE LIGHT.

With her mother’s life hanging in the balance, Scarlett is devastated – and done with being in the dark. She wants answers, all of them.

But when was her pursuit of the truth ever straightforward?

Pulling a single thread impels a great unravelling. And each revelation will force Scarlett to rethink what she thought she knew about the Ceruleans, the Fallen, her family – herself.

All that came before was a mere prelude to this, the final journey – to where it all began and it all must end. But in the final reckoning, none will survive unscathed. And some will not survive at all.

In this explosive conclusion to The Ceruleans series, all must be defined by their actions: sinner, saint… or something more beautiful entirely?

Charlotte Wilson Biography:

Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess. ‘Write, Charlotte,’ her grandmother advised. So that’s what she did.

Thirty-odd years later, Charlotte is a professional writer. For authors and publishers, she writes and edits books as The Book Specialist. For herself, she writes soulful, coming-of-age romance for young adults.

Charlotte grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in a village of Greater Manchester with her husband and two children. When she’s not reading or writing, you’ll find her walking someplace green, baking up a storm, or embarking on a DIY project. She recently achieved a lifetime ambition of creating a library in her home to house her ever-increasing collection of books. She pretends not to notice that the shelves are rather wonky.

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon by @jkentauthor #romance #comedy #giveaway

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon
Julia Kent
Publication date: January 31st 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance

He is addicted to his phone and his new role as CEO. I’m addicted to getting some on my own honeymoon.

One of these things is not like the other.

I am pretty sure a serial killer’s lair is the only place in the world where I could stash my new husband so he can’t manage the acquisition of our new company.

And that seems a little drastic.

But only a little…

All I want is one week alone with him. Hours in bed, legs tangled together in ecstasy, room service and long walks on the beach in Hawaii.

Not vying for his kisses around a Bluetooth microphone. The Borg aren’t sexy in real life.

So I’m taking matters into my own hands and hitting “reboot” on our honeymoon.

We’re going to a place so remote that no one can find us.

Not even my mother.

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon is now a full-length book of 150+ pages, with both Shannon and Declan’s points of view. Originally published with only Shannon’s viewpoint, this expanded edition is a result of reader feedback. People wanted to know what Declan was up to – so here you go. This book is meant to be read after Shopping for a Billionaire’s Wife and/or Shopping for a CEO’s Fiancée, but if you read it out of order (or even as a standalone), that’s fine. Shannon and Declan forgive you.

EXCERPT:

Shannon

Let’s do an inventory of this fine day. My day-after-I-got-married day. In Vegas.

After fleeing my Momzilla mother.

Today is supposed be Day One of my honeymoon after marrying the billionaire of my dreams.

(Let’s not count the night before).

Woke up to the lovely sight of my husband’s tousled dark hair sliding down my torso so he could feast on me for breakfast.

Had actual breakfast in bed after room service delivered mixed berries, cream, bacon, and maple-soaked carrot-cake french toast, and the best damn coffee on the planet from the coffee chain I now own.

Made love with my delightful husband in the giant jetted bathtub in our suite. Turns out I’m as bendy as a Cirque du Soleil performer when I need to be. Maybe Mom’s insistence that I attend all those yoga classes she teaches has a silver lining after all.

Dressed and prepared to hop the corporate jet for Hawaii, kisses interspersed between readying ourselves for the trip. Undressed twice. Dressed twice. Declan insisted I not wear panties for the plane trip.

“But I’m already a member of the Mile High Club,” I’d protested.

“Not as a wife.”

He had a point.

Panties abandoned.

Found his brother, my best friend, a former colleague and an Anterdec chauffeur all married to each other.

Notice something a little different about that last one?

Yeah. Me too.

Day One of my honeymoon had promise, but now? Now it’s a little too real.

We’re on the plane, settling into our seats, and I’m doing my best not to think about my poor best friend and her chaotic mess back at the Anterdec resort where Declan and I just spent nearly a week trying to figure out our entire life.

Which we did, successfully, to my utter surprise. After fleeing our wedding in a helicopter and lying to my Momzilla mother, we managed to get to Las Vegas, ensconced in a resort on the Vegas Strip that Declan had designed himself as an intern in college. By the time my crazy family caught up to us, we’d steeled ourselves for the inevitable fallout.

And got so much more than we expected, in more ways than one. We’re married now. Husband and wife.

That’s really all that matters.

That, and honeymoon sex.

Lots and lots and lots of honeymoon sex. It’s my wifely right to walk funny for the next few days.

And his husbandly duty to make it so.

If I Were… Beautiful by @DevonHartford Blog Tour + Guest Post #NA #Romance #FridayReads

If I Were Beautiful
Devon Hartford
(If I Were…, #1)
Publication date: January 23rd 2017
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Is life better when you’re beautiful?

Jane Johnson has tried every beauty tip and trick known to woman, but none of them have ever made men notice her.

Until now.

Finally, something is working. She barely recognizes herself in the mirror. Is it her new haircut? Two years of yoga class? Her new eyebrow tweeze? Or is it all that nasty wheat grass juice her sister insisted she drink finally working some kind of magic? Whatever it is, something is transforming Jane from plain to downright beautiful.

For the first time in her life, men are noticing her.

Constantly.

Jane is getting so much attention from men she doesn’t know what to do with it.

Before her inexplicable transformation, she couldn’t get a date to save her life. Now she has a date every night of the week. Gorgeous eligible men are throwing themselves at her. They’re even fighting over her. Actual fist fights to win her affection.

It all seems too good to be true.

The only question on Jane’s mind is whether or not her newfound beauty is going to last or if it’s some cruel trick of fate that will fade away as quickly as it appeared.

Because everybody knows, when something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

***If I Were Beautiful is a saucy romance with a mystical twist that will leave you breathless to find out what happens next. This is book one of a three book series. Book two will release April 2017, Book three, July 2017 (or sooner).

Mrs. N Asks Devon: Talk about the struggles of writing in a female-dominant industry as a man. (and/or) How do you get into the head of your female main character so well? I’m fascinated by men writing female characters.

When I started writing women’s romance eleven books ago, I figured it would be no different from any other kind of fiction writing. It didn’t help that my first series, The Story of Samantha Smith, was set in college, and was as much of a “first year in college” story as it was a romance novel. Obviously, going to college for the first time is something men and women both can relate to for similar reasons. You’re generally on your own for the first time, you’re struggling with balancing your school/work life with having fun (emphasis on the fun part), and most of your peers are single and looking for love (or a hookup). Also, the series heroine Samantha Smith is only 19, and like many people her age, she’s very insecure. Everyone can relate to being insecure at one time or another.

It wasn’t until I started writing books set outside of a college environment that I discovered I didn’t know shizz about being a woman.

Whoa! Shocker!

Sure, men and women both face similar issues like finding love, finding a job, worrying about money, worrying about our loved ones, etc. But we all know men and women also face uniquely different issues. I had no problem writing convincingly about men’s issues. I’ve faced them my entire life. My buddies have faced them too. We talk about them, bitch and moan about them, compare notes, offer suggestions, make observations, and make jokes from an inside perspective.

But when it comes to women’s issues, I am absolutely an outsider looking in. I can’t draw from personal experience. I can only draw from other people’s personal experiences. I guess you could say I’ve learned to be like a journalist of sorts. I have to observe women. I have to ask women questions. Lots of questions. Yeah, I’m a good listener. I have to be. I’ll never ever know what it’s like to be a woman in the 21st century unless I pay attention.

But that’s just the research part.

The hard part is the writing part.

You could also compare what I do to being an anthropologist studying and living with another culture, one that is wildly different from your own. At first, the actions, behaviors, mannerisms, all seem completely foreign. Heck, even the language is different. At first, you have no idea what anyone is saying. Eventually, you learn the language, learn the social customs. If you spend enough time living inside a foreign culture, you can probably do a passing good job of behaving like one of them.

But they all know, “You’re not from around here.”

Sadly, no matter how much studying and observing I do, I’ll always be an outsider when it comes to the ways of women.

As for the books, when I’m writing a male character, it’s easy. I can come up with male dialogue and male behavior all day long. I know when it rings true and when it doesn’t. I’ve lived it. I know.

But when I’m writing female characters? Forget it. It’s not based on intuition. It’s not based on experience. It’s purely an intellectual exercise. And that’s why I’m constantly second guessing myself.

Would a woman do this?

Would a woman say that?

Would a woman FEEL this or that?

I can only guess.

I haven’t lived it first hand. I don’t have that internal measuring stick, that automatic sense of what works and what doesn’t. You know that feeling you get when you’re taking a math test and you’re not really sure if you got the answer right? You did all the work, and at the bottom of the page you wrote down an answer. But you don’t know if it’s right or wrong. You have to wait until the teacher grades your paper for you.

Thankfully, my beta readers (who are all women) grade my books before I publish them. They’ll point out things that don’t ring true. After eleven books, I tend to get it right most of the time. I’ve done my research and my homework.

But the fact remains, what I’ve learned about women through outside observation in my lifetime is a tiny fraction of what every woman learns from living her life day after day after day. Whenever I pick up a romance from a skilled female romance author, especially good romantic comedies written by women, I inevitably read lines that make me laugh out loud, and I end up shaking my head and thinking “That is comedy genius, and I would NEVER have thought of that line. Respect.”

I know I’ll always be a student of women.

I’ll always be learning.

And my readers will always be grading.

I’m okay with that.

As long as I don’t get a report card, what do I care?

Oh wait.

I forgot about those pesky book reviews…

Too bad they don’t grade on a curve.

LOL.

“I’m a Junkie and Can’t Get Enough” Vampire CEO Part 2 by @Erin_Bedford #paranormalromance

vampire-ceo-part-two

Title: Vampire CEO: Part 2 (Vampire CEO Series)

Author: Erin Bedford

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Witches

Book Blurb:

This is part two of a three-part series.

The witch is out of the bag now…

With a vampire boss and an overwhelming attraction to him, Abigail’s new job has become more than she can handle. The parts of herself that she thought were gone have resurfaced and now not even she knows what will happen next.

Sebastian is becoming more to her than just a boss and she has to decide will she stay with him or go? The smarter option would be to leave but when has she ever been smart?

Part three coming February 13th!

My Review:

I’m a junkie for this series. After reading book one, I went through withdrawal symptoms waiting for part two to come out. I tried to be patient but you know how it is when you become so attached to a book series, patience goes out the window. I fantasized various scenarios (some outlandish, most super-sexy) and when I finally read part two (in one sitting), Erin Bedford blew my freakin’ mind!

Part two picks up the morning after where part one leaves off. Abigail is in her apartment reliving what happened the night before. She knows she needs to tell her mother what happened before the High Priestess hears it from someone else. But she might be too late as her mother is gravely ill. Grief-stricken and not feeling up to facing her sex-on-a-stick boss, Sebastian, she calls in sick. Several HOT encounters between Sebastian (on the couch, in the office, in a darkened alleyway) only reaffirms Abigail’s decision to find another job.

Meanwhile her witchy friend, Rebecca, gets drunk and Abigail gets a call from the bartender asking for help. Even though it’s 3 am, she’s gotta go and rescue several beefy bouncers and bartenders from a single petite female who happens to be a powerful witch. (Best scene ever!) Abbie to the rescue and on her way out the door, she asks about a job at the club. A waitressing job is better than working so closely with Sebastian.

Abigail’s backsliding in part one has opened the door to the darkness inside her and she’s finding it harder and harder to resist. Sebastian feeds her desire and if she loses total control, there won’t be anything left of Abigail, much less those she loves. But when she goes to the waitressing interview, all reason leaves her.

WOW! I loved this part even more than part one. Filled with a lot more smexy interaction between Abigail and Sebastian (no, I won’t give you any spoilers), the stakes couldn’t be higher for Abigail. Her mother’s illness, Sebastian’s coolness then boiling hot behavior leaves her bewildered, not to mention giving into temptation. A witch and a vampire? What happens when he sinks his fangs into her?

Gimme more, Erin Bedford! Counting the days until part three comes out.

Favorite Character: Abigail. I understood her pain as she’s dealing with a lot. If her mother dies, will she ascend as High Priestess? Even though there’s some in the coven who despise her? And what about Sebastian and her dark fantasies about him sinking his fangs into her while they have sex? Mmm, deliciously dark and seductive.

Favorite Quote: “Then you have to keep your mouth and fangs to yourself!” she jumped up from the couch, not minding the blanket that fell to the floor.

My Rating:  5+ stars

What Happens in Bangkok by @DarylDevore #NewRelease #romance #erotic

Title – What Happens in Bangkok

Author – Daryl Devore

Genre – Erotic Contemporary Rock Star Romance

Publisher – eXtasy Books Inc

Book Blurb –

To save Darien’s life his brother asks, “Can you walk in high heels?”

Erika Bailey, owner/manager of a drag queen club in Bangkok, Thailand has happily settled into all aspects of her new life, except for her lack of a love life. When a new diva auditions, Erika is bewildered over her instant attraction to the blond God, Apollo.

Darien Scott is on vacation after a world tour and mistakenly figures the safest place to be is at The Black Dragon with the head of a Triad. When the club is hit, Darien is the only person to get out alive. Now he’s running from the police and a Triad. Mistake number 1.
Disguised as a drag queen, he’s hired by Erika, but falls hard for his new boss, then struggles with not coming clean with her. Mistake number 2.
Can he fix his mistakes and find a life filled with love or is he headed straight for mistake number 3?

Excerpt –

Erik leaned on the balcony railing and stared down at the crowd of patrons partying in her club. They were laughing, and buying over-priced and watered-down booze, just the way it was supposed to be. The strobe lights bounced off the glitter and tinsel, adding blinding sparkles to the atmosphere. Overhead, four massive disco balls turned, spitting out flashes of light, randomly illuminating either patrons or the leopard print wallpapered walls. And best of all, Bangkok was a half a world away from home, which couldn’t be more perfect.

She’d made it through her second year. She hadn’t expected to jump straight into an owner/managerial position, but the opening was there and she grabbed it. The learning curve had been steep at first, although she now felt like she had her feet on the floor and her head squarely on her shoulders. Life wasn’t perfect, but it was good. She took a deep breath and enjoyed a sense of calmness.

“Hey, Boss Lady.”

She shifted to look at Sebastian, her stage manager. His chest muscles bulged under his white t-shirt, the rips in his jeans hinted at strong thighs, and the ever present headset rested on his scruffy brown hair. He sat on one hip and flipped a hand to point behind him. “It’s just cray cray back there. Shangri-Lay’s havin’ a hissy fit.”

Stifling the urge to pound her forehead on the brass railing, Erik asked, “What’s the little diva’s issue this time?”

“Well, she’s screamin’ somethin’ ’bout Ra-chell took her pink scarf and the new eye shadow that matches it. Ra-chell says she didn’t. She bought ’em this afternoon when she was out shoppin’. You know Ra-chell ‘n shoppin’. She gets a paycheck and it’s gone. But no way Shangri-Lay’s gonna believe her. She’s threatenin’ to rip out her hair extensions.”

Erik placed her palms on the cool railing and pushed upright. “Lead on.”

She followed the harassed stage manager through the club, the pounding bass drowning out anything more he might have said to her. In the evening gown laden, makeup strewn topsy-turviness of the dressing room chaos ruled. Two partially dressed people rolled on the floor, entangled in each other’s arms and legs, with fingers gripping hair and voices screeching. The other performers stood by and watched, cheering their favorite.

Erik grabbed a nearby glass, tossed the contents in the sink and filled it with cold water. She pushed her way through the crowd and flung the contents on the fighters.

“Ah! My makeup.”

“You bitch!”

“Excuse me?” Erik lifted an eyebrow.

The Guardian’s Witch by @RuthACasie #99cents #romance #books

TheGuardiansWitchFinal

Title: The Guardian’s Witch

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

England, 1290

Lord Alex Stelton can’t resist a challenge, especially one with a prize like this: protect a castle on the Scottish border for a year, and it’s his. Desperate for land of his own, he’ll do anything to win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the rumored witch who lives there.

Feared and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she’d never marry, but she is drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.

Despite his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can’t get the alluring Lisbeth out of his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him. Realizing they’ll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.

Excerpt:

The berries Lisbeth had gathered tumbled forgotten from her hands. A tremor touched her lips while the vision slammed behind her eyes. She didn’t doubt the vision’s truth. Sometimes a bright light, warm and comforting, accompanied the vision; other times the wind howled, cold and disturbing. Today, panic clearly filled the air.

She spun around trying to pinpoint a direction and abruptly stopped. Facing south, she licked her lips nervously and tasted the sweetness of fresh water. A rushing sound burst in her ears. The river. Her head snapped east toward the river path and she ran. As she careened down the narrow trail, the outstretched branches tugged at her dress, pulled off her shawl and clawed at her face and arms. She took no notice. The cadence of her footfalls beat out a mantra, not him, not him, not him. She rushed on faster, mumbling enchanted words under her breath.

She exploded out of the forest and stood on the riverbank as the bridge gave way, sending the horse and rider plunging into the angry current. Swiftly the horse surfaced and headed for shore with an empty saddle. She stood on the bank, still mumbling as she scanned the river until she glimpsed a clear red aura shining deep in its middle. Her relief was momentary when the blackness began to creep in. There wasn’t much time.

Quickly she pulled off her heavy dress and, wearing only her chemise, dove into the river. Save him was her only thought. Down she plunged kicking hard against the current. The usually clear water, now choked with mud, churned with debris. She screamed the words in her head and made her demands. In response, the current slowed and as the mud began to settle, a lifeless hand beckoned to her from below.

“Intoxicating and Swoon-Worthy” The Highlander’s English Woman by @RuthACasie #romance

thehighlandersenglishwoman300-1

Title: The Highlander’s English Woman

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

Laura Reynolds is in love with her long-time friend, Jamie Maxwell Collins. She adores his playful sense of humor, caring nature as well as his strong sense of family and honor.

Jamie lives across the border in Scotland. Outwardly carefree, he hides a dark secret. He can’t involve Laura in this deception. He can’t give her hope for a future together.

Laura stumbles upon Jamie’s secret. In her heart of hearts she knows Jamie is innocent. Their relationship in tatters and with no hope of reconciliation, she plays a deadly game to exonerate Jamie, she agrees to a political marriage. She has no idea the entire game has been orchestrated by her future husband, Jamie’s greatest enemy.

My Review:

Betrayal. Deception. Love. Power. Something is amiss and The Maxwell calls on his most trusted warrior, Jamie Maxwell Collins, to root out the perpetrators before The Maxwell Ghost strikes again.

In the continuation of the short story, The Maxwell Ghost, Ruth A. Casie tells the complete story of Laura, Jamie and the ghost(s) haunting the castle of The Maxwell. If you read The Maxwell Ghost, you’ll be familiar with the first part of this book. But please don’t skip the first half of the story. Casie adds intricate detail to the original story and trust me, it’s worth a re-read. It’ll suck you into Laura’s and Jamie’s romance as well as what else is happening.

Back to the story…

Laura agrees to accompany Jamie, on her mother’s behalf, to help the restless spirits before their time is up. She, like her mother and sister, have certain “gifts” and she knows she can right the wrong. But all is not as it appears to be and it may be Laura the hidden villain is after, not The Maxwell.

Jamie knows he must end things with Laura because his enemy is vicious and would think nothing of torturing Jamie through Laura. So, he makes a clean break and shatters Laura’s heart, although his pain is much worse than hers. He goes undercover to uncover the plot against The Maxwell and even goes so far as to “pretend” to be in love with one of women associated with the plot to overthrow The Maxwell.

Laura, in an effort to get over Jamie, befriends an old friend who falls in love with her. He proposes marriage and seeing no other choice, aligns herself into a political marriage. Laura is playing a deadly game and all those she loves may pay the consequences. Can Jamie save her or is all lost?

I loved this historical romance and while it was written years after The Guardian’s Witch, this prequel’s continuity is exceptional. Casie blends the supernatural with historically accurate romance with precision and flair. The plot has several twists and surprises (I won’t reveal any here) which I wasn’t expecting. The monk scene is priceless!

If you’re a fan of historical medieval romance set in both Scotland and England with dashes of the supernatural, pick up this book right now! It’s a gem and I highly recommend it! Can’t wait for the next installment in the Stelton Legacy by Ruth A. Casie!

This is a standalone, as is The Guardian’s Witch, but I recommend you read this first.

Favorite Character: Laura. Strong, independent and full of passion, Laura knows what she wants and goes after it. She’s in love with her childhood friend, Jamie, and when he pushes her away for another woman, her pain is acute.

Favorite Quote:

He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

Eve of Chaos by @LiviaQuinn Spotlight + #Giveaway + Special #99cents Sale #Romance

Eve of Chaos EBOOK 11192014

Destiny is a southern town like no other. Its supernatural residents are bound by the Paramortal pact – no matter their species – to protect those weaker than themselves. Montana is Dinnshencha, a warrioress who can shift into any form in defense of a woman in trouble. She’s also half vamp. Relationships with men have never been easy or enduring since the object of her ire is usually the opposite sex. She’s accepted that. For centuries. Until someone left their video game on “share” in a parallel universe and Conor de Sept Flambe’, the dark knight, stalked into the Mardi Gras Ball. Why was he here?

Eve of Chaos is book 3 in the Destiny Paramortals series. As Chaos approaches, new challenges arise, alliances are forged and enemies revealed.

Blurb:

Former Navy pilot, now “Sheriff” Jack Lang knows something’s afoot with Conor’s appearance in Destiny. Crazies are coming out of the woodwork, Paramortals are losing their abilities, and dispositions going AWOL, Jack wants to know who will be left standing beside him when the Para-moon begins. If Flambe´ is what Jack thinks he is, the good guys might have a chance. If not, they’ll be in deep… trouble.  Where’s an F-18 when you need one?

Excerpt:

For the rest of the evening, no matter where she was, if she turned her head, and looked across the expanse of revelers she’d find his eyes locked on hers, as if he’d been waiting for her to turn. Once, she turned back toward the bar but it was oddly clear, only Flambe´ standing there, framed by the oak counter, one of his swords standing in front of him on its hilt, the tip nearly reaching the Knight’s chest. He’d been cleaning it, shining and stroking the deadly edges with a cloth, so intimately acquainted with them that he wasn’t even watching.

His attention was all on her, the rims of his eyes lined like a predator’s, causing her to shiver briefly, but if that look was for her, he should know she was not prey. By her very nature, predators were her enemy. And still she felt the pull of pure heat as if they were connected in some way.

Sometime after Tempe and Jack left, the orchestra had suddenly stopped playing the zydeco music and the unlikely strains of a minuet had filled the room. Everyone looked up in surprise. Then as it had when he entered, the crowd split, giving the swordsman a wide berth as he strode purposefully across the ballroom floor toward Montana’s side of the room, his gaze locked on hers the whole way. Surely… she broke the contact to search the area around her, but there was no one nearby. He was coming for her. Her Dinnshencha reared up, readying for this formal meeting. It seemed impossible that she hadn’t actually met him yet.

His broad black tattooed shoulders led as his long strides moved closer, the flared pants hugging his powerful thighs, flowing around his calves and the swords catching the light overhead, making them flash with dazzling fire. He came to a controlled stop inches from her and the air seemed to leave the room, the sounds of feet shifting, voices, and laughter dying as he planted his feet in front of her.

The crowd waited. She waited. Not a muscle, pore or eyelash flickered while the room held its collective breath in expectation. The Knight’s arms rose, stretching the thick tattoos across his shoulders, giving the appearance of wings spreading, preparing to lift off. The room inhaled as one. Flambe´s eyes dropped; he brought one hand to his torso, and bowed. For a matter of seconds all she could see was his shiny black shoulder length hair and the pointy tips on the tattoos. The collective “ahhs” of the women in the room penetrated her awareness as he straightened again and spoke. “Lass, may I hav’ this dance?”

The Inheritance by @JacquelineSeewa (ld) #RomanticMystery #Mystery #NewRelease

the-inheritance-front-cover-2

Title: THE INHERITANCE

Author: Jacqueline Seewald

Genre: Romantic Mystery

Publisher: Intrigue Publishing

Book Blurb:

Jennifer Stoddard, a thirty-five-year-old widow with an eight-year-old son, receives a surprising letter which will change her life. Jennifer’s grandmother has passed away and named Jen as sole heir to her estate. To claim her inheritance she must return to Bloomingvale, the town in the Midwest where she grew up. Jen is informed by her grandmother’s attorney that to inherit she must meet the condition of living in her grandmother’s house for two years. Since the estate is substantial, she agrees. However, there are those who will stop at nothing to make certain that Jennifer does not inherit.

Jennifer is forced to call on old flame Police Chief Grant Coleman for help and protection.

Excerpt:

Late that afternoon as Jen left the house and started to drive away, a strange sound whizzed across the open front car windows from the driver’s side through the passenger side. She was startled by the sound. Her heart began to pound. Jen glanced over at the thicket of overgrown shrubs and trees to the side of the grounds that led back into woodlands. Had the sound been a bullet? If so, it had nearly hit her. Her hands shook on the driver’s wheel as she took off at high speed.

One block away she heard the police siren and saw the flashing lights. She groaned. Not again! He signaled with his hand, pointing his index finger for her to pull over. It was all she could do not to burst into tears.

Grant Coleman approached the car like a gunfighter in a spaghetti western. “I thought you learned something the first time,” he said. “Guess I was wrong. License and registration.” He held out his hand with a bored, impatient gesture.

“I have a very good reason for speeding.”

The smile was more of a smirk. The man was infuriating! “I’ve heard them all, but you can try.”

“As I left my grandmother’s house, a bullet passed through my car. I had the windows rolled down. So they weren’t broken, but it just missed hitting me.”

He stared at her. “Maybe it was a kid with a Beebe gun. Are you certain it was a bullet breezing by you? How familiar are you with weapons?”

“Not familiar at all, but I know what I heard.” Jen swallowed hard. “I think someone might have intended to shoot me.”

He let out a loud laugh. “In Bloomingvale? I doubt that very much.”

“So you’re not taking this seriously?” She folded her arms over her chest.

“Admit it. You’re just looking for an excuse to keep me from writing you another ticket.” His intense gray eyes bore into her like the steel blade of a dagger.

Jen raised her chin and stiffened her spine. “You are so wrong. Why don’t you check the area near the house, just to see if you can find anything.”

“Waste of time.” He leaned toward her and she felt his breath on her cheek which caused her to shiver. “Tell you what I will do though. I won’t write you a ticket this time because that’s the most creative excuse I’ve ever heard.”

“So glad I managed to amuse you,” she said.

Jen watched him drive off. He was probably still laughing, the sexy jerk. Several people had come out of their houses and were staring at her. Jen managed to restart her car and drove off before others gathered. She certainly didn’t want to make a spectacle of herself. Letting out a shaky breath, Jen wasn’t certain now if she’d really heard what she thought she had. A professional law enforcement officer didn’t think anything of it. She supposed it might have been nothing at all. Maybe it was a child with a Beebe gun as he suggested. But try as hard as she might, Jen couldn’t convince herself.

Meretneith by Barbara Ann Cerda @bobann #bookreview #FridayReads #eroticromance

meretneith

Title: Meretneith

Author: Barbara Ann Cerda

Genre: Erotic Fantasy, Erotic Romance, MFM Romance

Book Blurb:

This is an erotic thriller about a 5,000-year-old female warrior known among her kind as the Protectress. Meretneith covertly leads the remnants of a civilization destroyed by catastrophic land shifts. Her highly evolved culture thrived long before humans walked upright to become an emotionally sentient race. As tribal leader, Meretneith roamed the ancient deserts of Kemet. The beauty now travels the world as a business leader and death dealer.

The novel chronicles, in character retrospections, the events that shaped the developing relationships between Meretneith’s tribe and humanity. As tribal law, she is mated to her brother Ptah from birth. Together they become both stewards of human civilization and guardians against the oldest tribe, the Hyksos. Meretneith’s tribe called them the Old Ones. Winning their freedom from this tribe long before the advent of human kind, they war to maintain that freedom.

Superior in strength and longevity, they lay hidden within human civilizations to secretly lead and protect.

Amassing great wealth the tribe shifts global economies and civilizations’ religious and moral self-perceptions. Threatened by their old enemy Meretneith’s ancestors devised a madman’s scheme. Because of the increased influence of the Hyksos, humanity’s movements toward events of self-destruction must be altered. The scheme incorporates an ambitious global economic initiative. The results will be the creation of offspring that heralds a genetically altered and stronger human race.

Enter the Chicago global financier Saul Ben Izrael who finds it hard at first to accept his new heart’s passions and legacy. As a subterfuge, Saul is recruited to head a global alliance. The promised completion of the project will create a realignment of sovereigns’ wealth. A larger than life urban economic warrior, he is drawn like a magnate to the possibilities of becoming a global economic power. This new project also offers him the love of the incredible beauty Meretneith, head of the largest organization of wealth in the world.

He is a stunning middle-aged giant of a man, who watched his life change in an instant when the beautiful female warrior entered it. Disguised as a global leader she swept him into a world of which he knew nothing. Tribal warriors and leaders Meretneith and brother Ptah were beautiful and 5,000 years old. Born in the deserts of ancient Kemet they came to Chicago to claim as their own the wealth builder Saul Ben Izrael.

Unbeknownst to Saul he is the Chosen One come to lead and defend human kind and to join in the fight against the Old Ones. The three awaken to an indescribable passionate bond. The evolution of a new human kind and the love that seals that bargain paves a magnificent journey.

My Review:

The world is older than you might think and humanity is on a path to self-destruction. Prophesy states there is a Chosen One who will join forces with Tribal Warriors Meretneith and her brother, Ptah (Egyptian Goddess and God retrospectively) and defeat their enemies, known as the Old Ones.

Saul Ben Izrael is a financial god in his own right and when the wealthy Neith Foundation asks for his bid on the biggest financial project the world has ever witnessed, he can’t resist. From the moment he walks into the Neith Foundation and lays eyes on beautiful CEO Meret Neith, he’s under her spell. She invites him to meet her brother in London, England and he accepts, not knowing his life will forever be changed. He’s the Chosen One and Meretneith needs her brother’s help converting Saul before the Old Ones seek their revenge.

Seductive, alluring, heady are what spring to mind when reading this book. Meretneith combines Egyptian mythology with contemporary fantasy. From the first page, I was consumed with the intertwining storylines and erotic scenes. Cerda blends history with modern day beautifully so I could suspend belief while reading. While it dragged a bit in the beginning and middle, plot-wise, the vibrant characters more than made up for it. A very well-written first book in the series that piqued my interest in reading more.

This book is an erotic romance/fantasy and I recommend readers 18+ due to adult situations, menage sex scenes and relationships.

I received a copy from the author in the hopes that I’d review it.

Favorite Character: Meretneith. I’m a sucker for a kick-ass female protagonist and Meretneith is that and so much more. Seductive, powerful (she’s a goddess) and passionate, Meretneith is all the female attributes I admire in one. It’s no wonder men worship her.

Favorite Quote: “Today she would prove to her tribe and all who would oppose her, that she would be the supreme tribal leader. Every sinew, every nerve had been prepared since birth for this moment. Countless hours in combat training, herbs and grains all prepared specifically to create her powerful body. She longed for the rising of Re and for the battle stage in the deserts of Kemet to begin.”

1-Click Vampire CEO Part 1 by @Erin_Bedford Right Now! #99cents #PNR #bookreview

510fl36n97l-_sy445_ql70_

Title: Vampire CEO, Part 1

Author: Erin Bedford

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Witches

Book Blurb:

This is part one of a three part series.

Wait until he gets a taste of her.

Tossed out by her coven, Abigail has to brave the human world and get a real job. With no skills outside of potions and spells, she magics her way out of unemployment and into the executive suite of Midnight Pharmaceutical.

But something strange is going on at Midnight. While her boss is the very definition of dark and mysterious, he makes her witchy sense tingle with his odd hours and the string of women leaving his office every day…

She’ll find out what’s happening at Midnight; if her boss doesn’t take a bite out of her first.

Part two coming out January 30th!

My Review:

“Wait until he gets a taste of her…”

Abigail is the daughter of the high priestess of the New Orleans coven and has just been thrown out for bad behavior (we learn the real reason later). Forced to find her own way in the world, she does it like the humans do and gets a job. With no actual experience or references to speak of, she buys an itty-bitty spell to get a job as a midnight secretary for a pharmaceutical company. Midnight secretary? Yup, they work round the clock and before she can blink, Abigail is the brand-new night secretary for the CEO, Sebastian.

From the moment she starts working for Sebastian, the air and Abigail’s libido is electrified. His voice is silk, his eyes the deepest sapphire blue and his air of confidence reduces Abigail to a pile of goo. But she senses there’s more to Sebastian than just “rock my world until I scream” … is it just his alpha maleness or something more sinister? And what’s with all the women coming and going at all hours? But when she discovers his secret, will he change her or just fire her?

A brand-new series from one of my favorite new authors, Vampire CEO Part 1 is intoxicating, smexy and reminded me of an adult version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Dark, mysterious vampire? Check. Tortured witch try to make it on her own? Check. Swoon-worthy alpha male? Check. Strong yet conflicted heroine? Double-check.

Vampire CEO moves fast with action, conflict, seduction, family issues and characters I felt an instant connection with. This is singular POV (Abigail) and while I would’ve loved to hear Sebastian’s POV from time to time, I love being inside Abigail’s world. The ending plunged me off a steep cliff but luckily, I’m counting the days until Part 2 arrives in my reader. A must-read and I highly recommend it!

Favorite Quote: “Never fear me, Abigail. I have no wish to harm you.” His words brushed against the side of her neck causing her to jump in her seat slightly. No sooner had she felt him behind her then he was gone. As his office door closed behind him, his next words made her shiver. “Not unless you asked me to.”

“I thought I lost you forever” The Highlander’s English Woman @RuthACasie #romance

thehighlandersenglishwoman300-1

Excerpt:

“Hold me. Don’t let me go,” Laura said. She nuzzled his neck and sank into his strong embrace. “Love me,” she whispered in his ear. His muscles tensed in response. She wanted his arms around her, his lips touching hers.

They sank on the bed and held each other close. She was afraid to let him go, afraid the emptiness would find her, afraid of losing him, again. With an unending thirst, she focused on his mouth, the shape of his lips, the kisses that they promised.

His hand stroked the side of her body from her breast to her thigh, claiming them. One stroke of her breast and she tugged on his shirt. He didn’t hesitate. He obliged her and pulled it off. Her hand played down the hard planes of his chest. Her eyes widened at the sight of the scars on his chest.

“These weren’t here.” She traced them with her finger.

He stopped her hand and brought it to his lips. “Fighting for The Maxwell comes with a price. I don’t want to think of the Maxwell.” He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

She closed her eyes and reveled in the tingling sensation racing through her body and put her head on his shoulder.

He opened her bodice and stroked the top of her chest then, with trembling hands, touched her breasts. A low moan escaped her lips.

Jamie bent and kissed each breast.

He ignited a flame inside her that set her on fire. Delicious shudders pulsed through her. She pulled his head away and kissed him.

Her fingers traced the scars and the muscles of his chest danced at the light touch. “Where did you get this one?”

“In a fight with the English.” His rapt gaze focused on her face.

Her lips brushed against his skin.  His skin deckled in gooseflesh. Her finger moved on. “And this one?”

“A reiver attack,” his voice was husky and seductive.

The hooded passion in his eyes encouraged her. She kissed the scar and moved on. The tips of her fingers traced down his chest. “Here is another.” The scar snaked below his navel. Another kiss. Her fingers trailed down further.

He pulled her up and rolled on top of her. Her body instinctively arched against his. “You are mine.” His warm breath brushed against her face. Two heartbeats passed. “Do you hear me? You’re mine,” he said more urgently.

“Yes.” Her voice an intimate whisper. His lips tugged into a sideways grin.

His smile that made her bones go limp. It was his magic.

Excerpt:

Gunnar Redmond’s blood still raced from his morning run, and the female’s musky scent hit him doubly hard. The haggard white wolf had been running in a straight line since she’d hit the perimeter a few minutes ago. Nothing ran that hard unless something chased it, and he didn’t see or smell anything following her. Too soon to call a warning for something he could probably handle himself, the pack protector kept well behind his quarry. The third time she stumbled, his wolf reached for her, nearly stopping him in his tracks.

The urge to catch her before she fell surprised him. He breathed in her scent once more, finding her human nature had become much stronger and stank of a fear so fierce it permeated the crisp autumn air. She’d transformed. The scent grew stronger. His quarry had stopped, perhaps to get her bearings.

Every wolf in Los Lobos knew the location of the pack land boundaries.

She was obviously lost and confused.

Downwind and hidden by a small stand of trees, Gunnar crouched on the crest of a small hill. Naked and filthy, twigs and leaves riddled her tangled mess of dark hair that reached past her shoulders. Mud streaked her bare arms and legs. Her thin flanks trembled as she rubbed her hands up and down her arms and looked around. She might not be very tall, but her obvious curves left no doubt she was all woman.

His wolf whined.

If he waited any longer, his wolf was going to behave inappropriately. Knocking her down so he could clean her and show his obvious interest probably wouldn’t win him any points. He stood and unbuttoned his shirt as he walked down the short incline.

The wind shifted, and she lifted her nose, turned, and froze. Her dark eyes widened, and he scented the fear she tried to hide. His size intimidated most, but her gaze had locked on his fingers, still working his shirt buttons free, and it occurred to him what the situation must look like.

Nice going, dumbass.

He let his arms drop and sighed. “Did you know you were trespassing?”

Her shoulders slumped. She stared at him a moment, and her mouth worked in a silent effort that seemed to frustrate her. Finally, her words tumbled like so much static from a radio. “Am I in Los Lobos?”

Gunnar nodded, and a shaky smile quirked one corner of her mouth.

“My name is Luna Sinclair, and I beg sanctuary.”

A Midnight Clear by @JeannieHallAuth Sizzles With #Suspense + #Romance! #bookreview

a-midnight-clear-cover-sexy

Title: A Midnight Clear: A Christmas Novella

Author: Jeannie Hall

Genre: Romantic Suspense, Holiday Romance

Book Blurb:

Hannah Barker went from looking forward to her first white Christmas in years to sitting handcuffed and terrified in an FBI interrogation room. They believe her to be a heroin mule for one of the largest and most notoriously successful international drug syndicates of the past decade–they even have pictures of her in Tijuana, proving her involvement. But she’s just an insurance agent from small town Arkansas. She’s never even been out of the country. What in the world is going on?

Chief Deputy Ian Velez can’t look forward to the holidays this year. His five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son are missing, kidnapped by his mentally unstable wife. His once idyllic home life has been turned on its head while he works on the single most important case of his career, busting open the Dominguez Cartel. Then he sees their first real lead into the case: Hannah Barker. But this beautiful if unworldly woman comes across as innocent rather than guilty.

When Hannah is nearly killed while in the FBI’s custody, Ian saves her in the nick of time, but this alerts him to a mole working within the auspices of the Bureau. Cutting contact with the FBI and his superiors seems his only option. Ian runs with Hannah to a snowy cabin in the middle of the wilderness. While hiding there, sparks fly between the two, surprising them both. Should they try to make the best out of a bad situation? Or is their sanctuary in much more danger than it seems?

My Review:

Hannah Barker is looking forward to celebrating Christmas but all that changes when she’s put in handcuffs in front of her insurance co-workers and hauled off for questioning. She’s mistaken for a Mexican drug mule and the FBI has DNA proof. She’s as squeaky clean as a girl scout but no one believes her. No one, except for Chief Deputy Ian.

Ian’s gut tells him Hannah is telling the truth. When shots are fired and it appears like the FBI has a mole, he grabs Hannah and heads for his cabin the woods. Now, they’re both on the run and stuck inside a small, deserted cabin. Sparks fly between Ian and Hannah and before you can say yowsy, they explore these feelings.

But there’s hidden secrets in Hannah’s past and they’re the ones gunning for her death. Can Ian save her from an executioner’s bullet or will he be too late?

Wow! What a fantastic romantic suspense novella. Filled with fleshed-out characters and tons of intense suspense, I read this in one sitting. Hall does an impressive job hiking up the stakes with intrigue, romance and a few steamy sex scenes. It didn’t feel rushed, even though it was a novella, and the characters were well-developed.

If you’re a fan of suspense with doses of hot romance, pick up this book today! I look forward to reading more from Jeannie Hall.

Favorite Character: Hannah. I liked her immediately and it was enjoyable to be immersed in her head while on the run and trying to out-run the FBI, the Mexican Cartel and her own feelings. Spunky, well-developed and a woman I’d love to be friends with. Go get ‘em, Hannah!

Favorite Quote:

“Turned out those fairytales she’d memorized as a kid were complete crap. Her picture-perfect future of floating down the aisle to her soul mate would never come true, so she’d cut her losses. She didn’t need a man, anyway.”

Title: Beloved Enemy

Author: Hywela Lyn

Genre: Science Fiction/Adventure/Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Blurb:

Cat O’Brien is obsessed with killing the man she believes is responsible for the torture and death of her half-sister, but when she eventually catches up with him, survival becomes a greater priority than revenge.

Kerry Marchant, haunted by memories, regret and self-blame, shields himself from the pain of the past by committing himself totally to the starship, Destiny, of which he is part owner. He will do anything to protect her and her crew. However, the beautiful, red haired woman who reminds him of his lost love, and who he suspects is working for a corrupt regime, represents a possible threat not only to the ship, but to his heart.

Marooned on an inhospitable planet, which seems to defy natural laws, the two are forced to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction to each other. How can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again and she has made a solemn pledge to destroy him?

My Review:

This book was an amazingly enjoyable read!  I had no idea that this was the third book of a series.  This was a fantastic stand alone that can be read without having read the first two of the series. I was immediately drawn to Cat (and Shifter) and Kerry.  The characters were so well written that the reader quickly developed a feeling for them.  I loved the twists and turns as they existed on the planet.  A fan of sci fi will just love this book.

I found myself lost a bit with the quick scene changes that were hard to understand, at first.  When the big surprise hit and there was a larger presence involved, I was struck by how quickly I found myself looking for Captain Picard and Q.  I am a HUGE fan of that series so this worked for me on many levels.

The action was fast paced and exciting, the growing yet begrudged feelings between Cat and Kerry was really well written.  This is a page turner and hard to put down.  The superb ending was just the icing on the cake and I would love to read the first two and cannot wait to read the 4th installment.  Super highly recommend this book to every fan of science fiction!

Author Biography:

Hywela Lyn lives in a small village in England, with her long-suffering husband Dave, although her heart remains in her native rural Wales, which inspired much of her writing.

Although most her writing tends to be futuristic, the worlds she creates are usually untainted by crowded cities and technology, embracing the beauty and wildness of nature. Her  debut novel, a Science Fiction/Adventure romance released by the Wild Rose Press, was followed by a sequel ‘Children Of The Mist’.  A third novel ‘Beloved Enemy’, released in March 2016 continues what has now become a series known as ‘The Destiny Trilogy’.

A keen animal lover, she has two horses, a ‘feral’ stable cat, and a rescued terrier, who manages to twist her round his little paw.  When she is not writing, she can usually be found enjoying the outdoors with the horses and dog – or just  eating chocolate!

She is a member of The Romantic Novelists’ Association (UK) and Chiltern Writers, her local writing group.

(Syndicate #1)
Publication date: January 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

Spoiler alert. I fall in love with the man who comes in the night.

He watches me down the scope of his rifle, and it’s terrifying and exhilarating, not knowing when he’ll squeeze the trigger.

If he’ll squeeze the trigger.

Maybe I’ll die tonight…

…maybe I’ll die next week.

It’s a sick and twisted game, but it’s ours. And just when I think our story ends at a distance, he comes in close, thrusting himself into my life.

We are at war, he and I, and eventually, he’ll have to kill me.

If he doesn’t, someone else will.
