Excerpt

“Is someone at the door, Duffen? In this weather?”

The door swung open and revealed a striking blonde, wearing a dress as ugly and drab as the dismal day.

Heath’s jaw sagged.

Despite the atrocious grayish gown, the woman’s figure stole the air from him. Full breasts strained against the too small dress, tapering to a waist his hands could span. And from her height, he’d lay odds she possessed long, graceful legs. Legs that could wrap around his waist and…

Though cold to his marrow, his manhood surged with sensual awareness. He shifted his stance, grateful his long overcoat covered him to his ankles. He snapped his mouth shut. Evict this shapely beauty? Surely a monumental mistake had been made. Gainsborough couldn’t be so cold-hearted would he?

The woman regarded him much like a curious kitten; interest piqued, yet unsure of what to make of him. Her dark blue, almost violet, eyes glowed with humor, and a smile hovered on her plump lips. The wind teased the flaxen curls framing her oval face.

A dog poked its snout from beneath her skirt and issued a muffled warning.

“Hush, Freddy. Go inside. Shoo.”

She neatly stepped over the portly corgi. The bodice of her gown pulled taught exposing hardened nipples.

Another surge of desire jolted Heath.

Disturbing. Uncharacteristic this instant lust.

Rainwater dribbled from the hair plastered to his forehead into his eyes. He swiped the strands away to see her better.

The dog skulked into the house. Just barely. He plopped onto the entrance, his worried brown-eyed gaze fixed on Heath.

Ebénè nudged Heath, none too gently.

He glared at the grinning buffoon peeking around the doorframe. The woman probably thought Heath a half-witted dolt.

“Miss—”

A ruckus echoed behind her. She glanced behind her as four more young women crowded into the entry.

Blister and damn. A bloody throng of goddesses.

Surely God’s favor had touched them, for London couldn’t claim a single damsel this exquisite, let alone five diamonds of the first water.

Gainsborough had some lengthy explaining to do.

Blurb:

Sybil is happily on the shelf, tending to her sheep. But she fears she’ll depart this life without experiencing physical love, which she suspects is rather enjoyable. When her long-lost fiancé returns from sea, she decides he’s the lucky man who’ll receive her virginity.

Max is eager to return to his sugar plantation and has no intention of remaining long in London. However, he didn’t bargain on a wilful, pretty, exasperating spinster determined to take him to her bed.

He insists on marriage but she wants only his body. Her heart is not part of the deal. Unfortunately, love doesn’t always follow the rules.

Excerpt:

“I say, Sybil. Are you feeling well?” Oswald frowned. “You’ve gone all pink. Arabella, perhaps she should lie down. I don’t want her falling ill at the table.”

Sybil jerked at her brother’s words. “I’m finding it a trifle warm in here, aren’t you?”

“It is a little close, yes.” Max had come to her rescue, and she loved him for it.

Love?

Affection, surely. And desire, most definitely.

She moved to the window and shoved unsuccessfully against the sash.

“Let me be of assistance.” Max reached around her and raised the window. He let his hand rest on her upper arm and he leaned closer. His breath tickled her ear. “I love watching you become aroused. Arrange for us to be alone later. I’ll help you to relax.” He walked away. She pushed the window up as far as it would go and leaned out. The frigid breeze was heaven against her heated skin. Heavens above.

Mairi Maclean is kidnapped on her wedding day by the enemy of her dead husband. Taken north to the water-surrounded Kisimul Castle, she is held captive in the name of retribution. Alec MacNeil is set on revenge. When he finds his enemy dead, he takes his wife to replace the one that was murdered. An eye for an eye. A bride for a bride. EXCERPT:

He crossed to the window without a word and looked out at the courtyard, his eyes scanning beyond. “Where is everyone?” he asked. “At the chapel, I assume,” she said, stepping closer. He probably smelled of sweat or ale. She inhaled. Nay. She smelled pine and the sea and fresh air on him.

He turned, and she rubbed her nose to hide the action of sniffing him. His gaze dropped to her as if her nearness surprised him. “We will go,” he said.

Mairi sighed. “I won’t have Geoff wondering if I would have failed his test, so go ahead.” She let her eyes flutter shut and waited. “Go ahead?” he repeated, and she blinked open.

“Aye,” she said, starting to feel foolish. “Kiss me, if ye’re going to. Otherwise take me to the chapel.”

The only change in the man’s devilishly handsome face was a slight rise in his brows, his clear blue-gray eyes widening the smallest amount. Those damnably tempting lips opened and closed, and his gaze drifted to the shut door before returning to her. He stared at her, as if he were delving into her thoughts. The idea shook Mairi, and she frowned.

“Well, if ye’re not—”

The man wrapped his hand around her arm, slowly reeling her in with constant, gentle pressure until she had to tip her head back to see his face. He radiated authority and determination, as if he could order the mountains to move, yet chose to hold her instead. Her heart hammered in her chest as he set his hand on her cheek. “A kiss, and then we go,” he murmured, moving his thumb across her jaw.

She had time for only a quick inhale as he descended. Mairi had expected a bruising press of his mouth like Geoff had given her when he’d asked her to wed. But this man’s kiss was gentle and warm. With slight pressure, he tipped her head to seal their lips together, moving against her as if tasting an aged whisky. Heat flowed down throug Mairi, wiping away all rational thought. Her knees numbed, but the man seemed to accept her weight easily as he held her against his hard body. His height made him loom over her, but Mairi felt safely surrounded by power instead of fearful. Her fingers reached behind his head to feather through his wavy hair. They were still woven in the dark mass when he gently pulled back, ending the most sensuous kiss Mairi had ever experienced. What bloody foolishness was Geoff thinking? Her traitorous body begged for more, but she stepped back, hands to her flushed skin above her low neckline. The man adjusted himself through his kilt, proving that he too had been affected by the kiss.

“Who are ye?” she asked.

Book Blurb

Each morning, Emily Kendrick runs on the hard-packed sand of St. Augustine Beach to clear her mind and heal her heart.

From the widow’s walk of the house perched high on the dunes, a man trains his binoculars on Emily…

Excerpt

Chapter 1

She ran as fast as she could on the hard packed sand this early morning in February, still cold in St. Augustine, Florida. Cold and beautiful with the tide out and no one around. Almost always surefooted, not as steady since Larry died eight months before, Emily Kendrick stumbled and caught her balance. There was a sense of someone watching her, close to her, yet she ran into no one on the deserted beach. It was almost an everyday occurrence. Tears spilled down her face just as the hurdles set for the track team came up. Easy leap over the first one, the second knocked over by a careless foot. Emily fell and didn’t get up.

A lone runner sprinted through the waves and hurried to aid the fallen woman.

Binoculars slammed against the railing of the widow’s walk where two eyes had been watching the long-legged runner for months. From his well hidden perch high up on the mansion over-looking the Atlantic Ocean, under investigation the infamous Clifford Lansdale said, “She’s mine.” Fragments of the expensive binoculars lay at his feet.

“Are you all right?” the runner said.

Emily laughed and cried. “Oh sure. I never stumble like this and the kids will be coming down for practice soon. I’ve got to be on top of my game to train them.” She stood up, checked all her parts to make sure nothing was damaged and brushed off sand. “Thanks for stopping by. I’m Emily Kendrick.” She noticed the runner checking out all her parts too and shook her head. Guys. They just can’t help it.

“Patrick Corwin. What kids?”

“I coach the women’s track team at the college. We’re at the beach most days before the crowd.” She opened a thermos and offered tea. Patrick begged off.

“I run early before office hours. Have to get up to Jacksonville before morning rush.” He fished a business card from his running shorts. “Call me. I’d enjoy getting to know you better, Emily.”

Patrick left before she had a chance to say no. How could she ever go out with another man? Larry was the best husband in the world, her high school sweetie. Emily didn’t know how she was going to spend the rest of her life without him. Their children were grown up and married. They loved her but had their own lives to lead. “Go out, Mom,” Tommy said. “Have some fun. Dad wouldn’t want you to be alone.” Her daughter wasn’t eager for her to date. “Play Bridge, learn how to use the computer we bought you. I’ll have a baby for you to play with.” Emily hated card games, computers were scary, babies sounded wonderful but is that how life would be?

From sounds of a bus coming over the nearby dune, Emily knew the team had arrived. Time to work and work was the answer for now.

A Rancher’s Pride by @BarbaraWDaille and @HarlequinBooks #romance #books #99cents

A Ranchers Pride

Title – A Rancher’s Pride

Author  – Barbara White Daille

Genre – Contemporary Romance

Publisher – Harlequin Books

A Rancher’s Pride is the first in Barbara’s Flagman’s Folly series. It’s available in print and (as of this writing) is currently 99 cents at many major e-tailers!

Book Blurb –

His Whole World Is In Her Hands…

Sam Robertson’s life just changed. In one short day, he found out that he’s a daddy; that his beautiful little girl, Becky, is deaf; and that her aunt, sign language teacher Kayla Ward, intends to fight him for custody.

There are plenty of reasons Sam shouldn’t fall for Kayla. A city girl like her has no place on his ranch, particularly when she’s his ex-wife’s gorgeous sister. But thanks to the judge’s orders, Sam’s spending a lot of time with Kayla, trying to give Becky the stable home she’s never known.

Despite their ongoing custody battle, Sam and Kayla’s love for Becky brings them closer than they ever expected, and Sam knows that no matter who wins in court, he could still lose—Kayla or his daughter.

Excerpt –

This is from the opening of A Rancher’s Pride:

The minute Sam Robertson saw his mother’s frozen expression, he knew something terrible had happened. He hadn’t seen that look on Sharleen’s face since the night his daddy died.

He tossed his Stetson onto the hook by the kitchen door and crossed the room to where she sat by the round pine table. “Mom?  What is it?  What’s wrong?”

“Sam…”  She cleared her throat and started again. “Ronnie was here.”

“Ronnie?”  He frowned. He hadn’t seen his ex-wife in five years. “What did she want after all this time?  Just stopping by to say hello?”

“She said she’s settling down again. With another man.”

“That’s what has you upset?  You should know better. And we should both pity the poor guy. So, what did she do, drop off an invitation to the wedding?”

“No.”  Sharleen took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Finally, she said, “She dropped something off, but not an invitation. She brought a little girl with her. Four years old. Ronnie left her here. She said she’s your daughter.”

What?”  The news rocked him back in the chair. “That’s impossible.”

“I’m not sure that it is. The child is blonde. Like Ronnie. But she’s got your eyes. Your daddy’s eyes. She looks like a Robertson, through and through.”  She waved toward the arched doorway. “See for yourself.”

After a moment’s hesitation, he rose and moved to the door. He had to brace himself before he could step into the living room.

Everything looked familiar. The pair of plaid couches facing each other. The long pine coffee table between them. The chime clock ticking away on the mantel. Everything looked familiar, except the child sitting on one of the couches.

A beautiful little girl.

The daughter he’d always hoped for, the start of the family he’d never had.

He shook his head. Pipe dreams, for sure. Ronnie had never told a true story in her life. This child couldn’t be his.

As he moved another step into the room, she looked up.

Small and blonde, just as Sharleen had said. And more.

The girl’s eyes shone in the light from the table lamp beside the couch. Silver-gray eyes surrounded by dark lashes, a perfect match to his own.

His throat tightened. He felt frozen in place.

She gave him a shy smile.

He’d seen that half-twisted grin in plenty of his own childhood pictures. Not impossible after all. The child was his.

Somehow, after what seemed like hours, he managed to raise one hand to wave at her. “Hello.”  The word came out in a croak. He hadn’t the first idea of what to say and went for the standard opening line. “What’s your name?”

Sharleen moved up to stand behind him and rested her hand on his arm. “Her name’s Becky,” she told him. “But she can’t hear you, Sam. She’s deaf.”

EXCERPT:

Beep! Beeeeeeeeep! “Stop screwing with your phone and pay attention to the road!” I blow my horn some more. The light is green, has been for a good forty seconds. I glance over at my best friend for some support for my general crabbiness this morning. She’s not giving it though, she’s too busy tapping away on her own cellphone.

“You believe this guy? Same to you, Buddy!” I yell as I catch his middle finger pop up in front of his rearview mirror.

Rachel doesn’t say anything. She’s still engrossed in messages from whomever is texting her. Possibly the latest gossip, or party happening. Who knows?

I’m usually a perky, non-violent person. All of this has seemed to change recently. I saw an episode on the news about how much society is turning into walking mutants because they’re so absorbed in their phones. You won’t catch me searching for the perfect snap shot of yourself, only to be mauled by a huge mountain lion ready to pounce from behind. I don’t want to be mauled by some crazy animal in a park. I mean how awful would that be, death-by-selfie. So, I gave up on taking poses in the cute outfits I wear and selfies altogether.

And don’t get me started on texting. I loathe it. I know what you’re thinking. What kind of weirdo hates texting? The kind who’s dyslexic. And when everything looks like absolute gibberish anyway, and now I have to read words on a small screen just to find out who made out with whom; no thanks. If it weren’t for my text-to-voice app, I’d be screwed. People would think I’m a complete airhead because I couldn’t decipher a silly text.

“Sorry; what were you having a beyotch fit about?” Rachel asks drawing my eyes from the road and landing on her. “Austin was telling me what happened to Jared during football practice yesterday. Plus, I guess there is this monster party after the game Friday. You in or out?” She looks up from her phone.

“In,” I answer reverting my attention to the line of cars turning into the school’s parking lot. I know my boyfriend Adam will want to go hang out with his team so it’s a given that I’ll be tagging along. Although I really would rather it just be him and me this weekend. Lately we’re either in group functions, at parties, on double dates at the movies, or hanging out with his friends. I just want some me-time with him. No disgusting belching contests happening in the background or listening to other couples make out next to me. Gross.

“Austin wants to know if your sister’s coming?”

This question shakes me from my miserable funk, and I snort laugh. My twin sister at a party? HA-HA-HA. OMG; I think I peed my pants a little. “That’s not happening. Unless the words ‘book,’ ‘ComicCon,’ or ‘mud’ were in front of the word ‘party.’ Then she’d probably go. But yeah; no. Why’s does he want to know? Is he crushing on my sister?” That could be news I could get down with.

“He said one of the guys was asking.”

Raising a brow, I inquire, “Which one?” It’s probably Chase, but that would be weird considering he’s her best friend and knows her daily schedule.

She’s tapping away again as I pull up to the school parking lot. “He won’t say.”

“Why not?”

“Do you really care or are you just morbidly interested that someone might actually like your super wacked out sister?”

“She’s not … wacked out.”

Rachel is my best friend, but she’s not a fan of my sister, Juliet. In fact, she pretty much despises her. My twin isn’t mean or anything, she’s just … super smart. And sometimes tends to let her geekiness fly. She can recite the first five chapters of each Harry Potter book. She knows all the lines word-for-word in every Star Wars movie. Every stinkin’ one.

Speaking of my awesome twin, she pulls up next to me and slams her Jeep door. “You did it again! You know you only have one simple chore. One. And every time I get stuck with it.”

I roll my eyes at her. “Calm down, sis. I’ll get it next time.”

She smiles wickedly at me. It’s like looking in a mirror since our physical features are almost exactly the same. The only one small difference isn’t something most people notice just from looking at our faces: she has a small birthmark on her neck just below her ear, shaped like a heart, whereas I do not. Everything else is definitely the same, from the dark, rich brown hair to the mossy-green eyes, right down to the height of a whopping 5’6”. I’ve thought about cutting my waist-length hair to my shoulders just so people can tell us apart.

“You say that every time! I’m done helping you out Layla. Maybe next time instead of rushing off to get Starbucks, see Adam, or pick up your BFF you’ll do your chores and stop putting them on me. I have a life too you know.”

Rachel cuts in. “You have a life, since when?”

“Butt out Rach.” I shift my attention back to my sister who is currently glaring at my bestie. “Juliet, I’m sorry,” I say.

Her eyes cut to me. She shakes her head and walks away. I call out, “Juliet.” She doesn’t look back. Instead, she flips me off—and okay this time —I rightly deserve it.

I totally thought she’d take out the recycling for me again. “Dang it. Mom’s going to kill me.”

“This is why your sister is a freak,” Rachel says as we head into the school. Once we’re inside, she ditches me for Austin and I head to my destination, Adam.

Portrait of Hannah Fielding and photos of where she writes.

Author Biography

Hannah Fielding is an incurable romantic. The seeds for her writing career were sown in early childhood, spent in Egypt, when she came to an agreement with her governess Zula: for each fairy story Zula told, Hannah would invent and relate one of her own. Years later – following a degree in French literature, several years of travelling in Europe, falling in love with an Englishman, the arrival of two beautiful children and a career in property development – Hannah decided after so many years of yearning to write that the time was now. Today, she lives the dream: writing full time at her homes in Kent, England, and the South of France, where she dreams up romances overlooking breath-taking views of the Mediterranean.

Hannah is a multi-award-winning novelist, and to date she has published five novels: Burning Embers, ‘romance like Hollywood used to make’, set in Kenya; The Echoes of Love, ‘an epic love story that is beautifully told’, set in Italy; and the Andalusian Nights Trilogy – Indiscretion, Masquerade and Legacy – her fieriest novels yet, set in sunny, sultry Spain.

EXCERPT:

Raven cat-footed his way to the coach aware the coach driver stepped down to steady the horses. With the driver occupied, he opened the door, entered the carriage, closed it, and dropped on the brocade seat. A well-dressed woman seated there gasped. She held her reticule high, poised to strike him.

“I’m a gentleman in dire straits whose life is in danger. May I share your company for a moment? I will not harm you.” He removed his top hat, placed it and his cane on the shadowed opposite seat.

“You frightened me with your abrupt presence. Pray tell, sir, what are your intentions?”

Raven slid closer to the woman. She didn’t move, so he embraced her and placed his cheek against hers. “If you scream or shout, our lives will be in jeopardy.” He bent his head to capture the woman’s lips, pressing her against the seat. Raven sampled the sweet mint taste of her mouth. Her lemon fragrance pleased his senses, a rare combination of forbidden pleasure and danger that ached. He lingered in enjoyment. True, his lips held the kiss longer than the moment required. What started as a kiss in the name of safety became something more pleasurable—and not safe at all.

“Place your arms around me now. Perhaps if we pretend to be lovers, they will leave us alone,” he whispered.

Her arms encircled him as she dropped her reticule to the floor. His broad back shielded her from outside harm should anyone attempt to enter. Her generous breasts against his chest had his blood surging through his veins—a long ago forgotten desire. The naiveté in her kiss reminded him how jaded and bored he’d become. A delicious awareness invaded and reeled his senses. The touch of her hands to his hair tingled his scalp. Damnation, her fingers were magical. A purring moan escaped through her racing breath.

Raven’s heartbeat pulsed at his temples, not from fear, but from potent desire. He broke the kiss for a moment and moved his body a whisper-breath away to better study her. He savored all he saw. He moistened his suddenly dry lips. “I don’t hear voices, but it would be best to wait to make sure the mob has gone, my lady. Nor do I want to attract attention to your coach by my departure. It could place you in danger.”

“My boot sheaths my knife, and my cane is also a sword. I would have kept you safe.”

She arched one brow in a challenge, and simply held his gaze. Her devastating smile ensnared him. “And who will protect me from you, sir, and the marvel of your rakish kisses?”

“Dear lady, I would guess we’d protect each other. The magic of your hands fingering my hair must have presented quite a lover’s sight. Wherever did you—”

“I read it in a penny novel. I presume it sufficed? I have limited experience in that regard.”

“Indeed.” His grin contradicted his serious tone.

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: Merry Christmas, Henry by @Aubreywynne51 #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - MCH

Title: Merry Christmas, Henry

Author: Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Contemporary Holiday Romance

Book Blurb:

A holiday fantasy short story for the romantic.

Henry, a shy and talented artist, moonlights as a security guard at a museum and loses his heart to a beautiful, melancholy woman in a painting. As his obsession grows, he finds a kindred soul who helps him in his search for happiness. On Christmas Eve, Henry dares to take a chance on love and fulfill his dream.

Excerpt:

“Hey, Henry, you want a little overtime?” the supervisor had asked. “Charlie called in sick and I could use an extra hand. Another rich collector remembered us in his will. We’ve got a pricey piece arriving in about an hour and I’d feel better with some extra security.”

Henry tried to wipe the smile off his face. Five years in the city and he still felt like a country bumpkin. “Sure.”

“The paper says a Rubens. Flemish, wasn’t he? But it’s a small one.”

Henry gave a whistle. “Impressive.”

“There’s a companion painting with it, artist unknown. We’ll have to find a spot for it in appreciation for the collector’s piece.”

An hour later, Henry held a priceless painting in his hands. God, he loved this job.

“The family probably figured they wouldn’t get any money out of the other one. But this one sure is a beauty,” the supervisor said as he reached for the Rubens.

“Yes, indeed,” Henry replied, as his eyes landed on the second painting. “Striking.”

Henry’s boss laughed. “I’m talking about this one, Bud. The little one is worth the big bucks!” His boss headed toward the office to start the paperwork on the new museum pieces.

“Yes, of course,” he murmured, but his attention remained focused on the woman in the larger painting.

She sat on the edge of a rocky cliff, her face slightly turned as if looking over the edge. Her legs were out to the side, knees bent, a long, olive-colored skirt spread around her haphazardly as if blown by the wind. The stormy ocean breakers rushed between jagged rocks then turned into frothy waves that lapped at the sand. The details in the picture were crisp and stark, the color was minimal—just the woman on a cliff with the turbulent water below. But the overall effect created a hauntingly beautiful scene.

He felt her distress, her sorrow. His fingers itched to reach out and pull her from the painting and hold her, soothe her, give her comfort. Henry knew that if she could turn and face him, he would be looking at the most exquisite creature he’d ever seen. His hand shook as he reached out to touch the canvas.

“Are you okay, Henry?”

Henry drew his hand back quickly as if he’d been caught in the act of—of what? Touching a frame? Good lord, he must be tired.

“What? Oh, yeah, I just need some sleep. ” As Henry turned to leave, he took one last look at the woman who had just stolen his heart. Fate had given him a precious gift. He whistled “Angels We Have Heard on High” all the way home.

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: The Christmas List by @shailstock #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - TCL

Title:           The Christmas List

Author:       Shirley Hailstock

Genre:        Romance

Book Blurb:

A freak accident changed the course of tennis player Allie Underwood’s life. Two years in recuperation, she’s finally back on her feet, but her plans of opening a tennis academy died with the accident. Then Allie encounters architect Peter Barrett who literally pulls the rug out from under her. Attempting to avoid him proves fruitless as he’s everywhere she turns. When he pulls her into his arms and passion flares between them, Allie’s future and her heart are in jeopardy.

Patting himself on the back after gaining a lucrative contract, Peter Barrett is stunned when a teenage angel appears in his home office and tells him she’s there to save his soul. He has to help another mortal by fulfilling her Christmas wishes. Peter has never had a happy Christmas. And the chosen woman stands in the way of his architectural plans.

Will they learn the value of good will to men and open their hearts to love?

Excerpt:

Allie’s hand shook when she looked down at the year old paper.  Her mouth went dry as she stared at the list she’d begun two years ago.  Uncalled for emotions sailed into her like a fast moving train.  Her free hand went to her heart, trying to control the sudden beating that she could feel all the way to her head.

The note’s title was clear, but the year had been obliterated by water damage.  She didn’t need to see it.  She knew exactly when she’d written it.  It was during her before period.  Before the accident.  Before her world collided with a drunk driver.  Before life as she knew it and the promising future her friends and family knew was hers, was snatched away in a blinding few seconds that crushed her life, limbs, and career into a space too small for a woman her size.

Balling the single sheet into golf-ball size, Allie tossed it toward the trash can – missing it by inches.  She didn’t need to read it.  She knew what it said.  She also knew the list was moot.  Allie wouldn’t get any of her Christmas wishes – not then or now.

“Allie, are you ready?” her sister called from the hall.  Allie started taking a deep breath and snapping her attention to the present.  From the sound of Melanie’s voice, Allie could tell she was half-way up the stairs.

“Just throwing out some trash,” Allie called.  She glanced toward the trash can as if she could see her past.

Melanie pushed the door open and walked in without waiting for Allie to offer her entrance.  She was immaculately dressed in black pants, a creamy soft cable-knit sweater and red knee-length boots.  Not at all like Allie who wore a simple green dress with long sleeves.  It was cinched at the waist by a silver belt whose loop was three dress sizes tighter than it had been a year ago.  Allie wore support stockings and shoes with a one-inch heel.  There was snow outside, but it had been cleared away leaving adequate paths that could keep her feet dry.  Despite spending her entire life in Lighthouse, Maine, Allie did not like boots.

“What are you doing?” Melanie asked, looking around.

“Cleaning out some papers I don’t need anymore.”  She wanted to say some old memories, but that would spark more conversation than she wanted to go into with her perceptive sister.

“Ready?”

Allie pushed her arms into her coat.  “I am now.”  She smiled even though she didn’t feel like it.

“It’s cold out, but it hasn’t snowed yet.”

New snow was predicted.  Allie saw her sister glance at her shoes.  The censure that she should have on the boots Melanie had bought her was there.  She ignored it and started for the door.

“I’ll take this down for you,” Melanie said, lifting the nearly full trash can.

Allie gritted her teeth.  After two years, she was capable of taking her own trash down the stairs, but Melanie thought she was helping.  And Allie’s limp was almost gone.  If she didn’t overdo or try to walk too fast, no one could tell she even had a limp.

Melanie took the trash basket to the kitchen and left it next to a larger one.  The balled up list still lay on the floor of Allie’s bedroom.  Neither of them noticed.

Book Blurb:

Both play the clarinet, are teaching assistants, are well-respected and seem to have their lives firmly on track. In fact, their life should be idyllic, but Elaine’s past includes rape, neglect, and abuse from those who should’ve loved her—but didn’t, because from childhood, Elaine identified as transgender.

When Elaine tells Allen right before Christmas, he doesn’t know what to do. He loves Elaine, loves her soul, has heard about transgender people before, but didn’t think Elaine was one of them—she looks and acts like anyone else. Now, she wants to become a man and is going to leave.

He prays for divine intervention, and says he’ll do anything, just please don’t separate him from Elaine. And in the form of a car accident, he gets his wish.

Now, he’s in Elaine’s body. And she’s in his. But both were injured, and Allen’s old body (with Elaine inside) is in a coma.

Allen can’t tell anyone who he is. But one thing’s certain: if Elaine can wake up, he wants to be with her. He doesn’t care what body he’s in, or that he, too, is now transgender.

Why?

True love matters so much to the universe, once you have found your soulmate, the universe will do anything to keep you together—even change your faces.

Excerpt:

I woke up in a dark, strange room. I couldn’t see much, but I knew I wasn’t

home. The shape of the shadows was off.

At least my eyes are open, I mused. That’s something.

Then everything came back in a rush. The car—the accident. What happened?

I tried to sit up on a spare, single bed, but my midsection told me this was a very

bad idea. I flopped back down, and groaned as I came down hard on my left hand. It

felt wrong, somehow, so I picked it up and looked at it. Strange; in this light, it seemed

much smaller than usual.

I must have zoned out for a bit, because the next thing I knew, I heard, “Time for

your hourly check.”

“I’m awake,” I mumbled. Even my voice sounded—and felt—wrong. It was

much higher than normal.

What was wrong with me?

I saw a white light for a moment, but it blinded me to the point I could only see

sparkles. Then I felt something grab my hand. “Relax,” a male voice said. “I’m taking

your pulse, getting your vitals.” My hand was put down gently at my side, then the

insistent man asked, “Where does it hurt?”

“Everywhere,” I grumbled, still not able to see. “My head…my ribs…

everywhere!”

“Not surprising,” the man—a nurse, I realized—said. Then he asked me a

number of questions—what day it was, what year, where we were, who the President

was, all that. I answered fine until they asked me who I was, and I tried to say “Allen,”

but couldn’t. Then I tried to say, “Where’s Elaine?” but the only word that came out was

the last one.

The nurse nodded. “Yes, you seem to know who and where you are. That’s good

to hear.”

“I know who I am,” I said, trying not to sound frightened, “but I can’t explain it. I

feel so weird…can’t you give me anything for the pain?”

“We think you have a concussion, so we can’t just yet,” he said gently. “As for the

rest, I’ll check on you again in a few hours. Get some rest.”

Easy for you to say, I thought. But I tried to do what he asked; I just wasn’t able to do it. So I gave up after a few subjective eons and turned the light on. I still saw

sparkles, but through them, I was able to see white walls and the spare, utilitarian decor

of a hospital room. There were no tubes hooked up to my arms, but there was

something on my right forefinger—to get oxygen, maybe?—and a blood pressure cuff

was around my left bicep. Worst of all, there was no one waiting at my bedside.

What am I doing here? Then, after a beat: Where is Elaine? Shouldn’t she be here, even

if she doesn’t want to be with me, doesn’t want to marry me? Then I thought with rising

panic, Could she be hurt?

A familiar face poked her head into the room. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the

familiar face I’d been hoping for. “Elaine, are you awake?” Jolene called.

Elaine? I thought, and tried to say, No, I’m Allen! But the words wouldn’t come.

Feebly, I said, “I’m not sure I’m…” before my mind stuck on the words who you want and

couldn’t say them, so I substituted, “awake, actually” at the last moment. Why couldn’t I

even say my own name?

What’s wrong with me? I thought. What am I doing here? Why is Jolene here? Did I

really hear her call me by Elaine’s name?

And why did Jolene come alone? Where is my love?

Grab your copy of Found Girl today and dive into the sixth installment in the award-winning Project Enterprise series – your transport to action, adventure, and romance in space.

Excerpt

Arian glanced around to make sure they were alone, then lowered her voice. “How do you signal to a male, a man that you wish to be kissed?”

The woman grinned. “Just pucker up, ma’am. Hard part is to get them to stop.”

“Oh.” Arian considered this. She had not wanted Coop to stop, but he had. Had he sensed the Colonel approaching? But if a man would kiss any woman he was alone with… “So it is not something special when he kisses you?”

Now the woman seemed to really look at her. She was quiet for a few seconds. “It can be. When two people truly care about each other, kissing can be more…intimate than sex.”

“How do you know which it is?”

Her guide blinked several times, then grinned. “Well, if you ask them where they think the relationship is going and they don’t run away, that’s a good sign.”

“In the movie, they spoke words of affection,” Arian said.

“That’s a movie, it’s like made up. You know that right?”

Arian nodded. Coop had explained that all the people were actors pretending to be the real people in a story written by someone else.

Her guide’s brow creased in worry. “Sometimes guys will say things so they can, well…”

“Couple with you?”

Her face turned quite red, but she nodded. “Yes, ma’am. We call it sex. Or making love.”

Arian filed this away for further consideration. “How do you know the difference?”

This appeared to be a most difficult question because the crease in her forehead deepened.

“Well, you.sometimes you don’t know. You find out when they leave.” Her eyes turned sad. “Or when they don’t leave.” Now her mouth curved in smile and her eyes softened as if she saw something—someone?—not there with them.

She’d been hurt. Arian sensed this from her, but she was better now. “I see.” Or thought she did. She’d wondered what power Coop might have to damage her. This might be that power.

“They say love is a leap, ma’am. You don’t know how it’s going to end until you jump.”

She would not have understood this analogy before climbing down the power core. There had not been much up in her life until now. “You take the risk, or you don’t,” Arian said thoughtfully.

“Well,” her guide looked wry now, “sometimes you do it because you can’t help it. Attraction can be a bitch.”

The guide smiled, so Arian smiled back, sensing this was a mild joke.

“If your gut is telling you to run? Then do it, ma’am. It will hurt but not as much as if he walks away.”

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: The Bassist by @CarlaKrae #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - TB

Title: The Bassist (West Coast Soulmates #1)

Author: Carla Krae

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

Dylan is the bassist for Jake Lindsey’s band, but not when he’s in his hometown. It’s Christmas Eve and a sudden, strong blizzard has left the mountain submerged in snow, wrecking his plan to drive back to Los Angeles in time to attend Jake and Beth’s party Christmas Day.

Jennifer’s family was coming to spend the holiday at her cabin, but the storm is keeping them off the mountain. Resigned to entertaining herself for the night, she’s startled by someone pounding on her front door–a handsome man needing shelter from the storm. Dylan is sweet, funny, and so damn hot she can’t resist learning what he has to offer.

Was this a single night of passion, or the beginning of lasting love?

Excerpt:

They lapsed into silence, watching the crackly movie.  She studied him out the corner of her eye.  He was built nice, if you liked the slim look.  Visible muscle definition through the snug shirt.  She hadn’t looked close enough to see what color his eyes were, yet.  His hands were large, dwarfing the mug in his grasp, with long fingers and short nails.

“Do you think it’ll snow all night?” he asked.

“Maybe. Even if it doesn’t, the plows won’t come out on the roads until daylight.”

“So, I’m stuck here. All night.”

She let out a slow breath.  “So it would seem.”

A young, attractive man in the house all night.  Woo, boy.  No awkwardness there…

He broke the silence first.  “Want you to know you’re safe. Not a murderer or rapist or anything. Love women, actually.”

She arched a brow.  “And they love you?”

He laughed.  “Not enough to stay.”  And dropped his eyes to his mug.  “What about you? You mentioned a name.”

“Lee. My husband.”

“Oh. Couldn’t make it home for Christmas?”

“Not since he rolled his car off the mountain and died.”  Oh god…why did I say that?  “I’m going to prepare the guest room.”  She fled to the spare room to prepare his bed.

Jennifer couldn’t believe she blurted it out like that.  God, what he must think of her…what he must think she thought of him for asking.  Stupid, stupid, stupid

“Hey.”  He stood in the doorway.

“Yes?”

“I’m sorry for the personal question. It was none of my business. I’d offer to go, but…”

“You don’t need to apologize. I don’t know why I said that.”  She sighed.  “My husband died ten months ago. He was drunk and driving too fast and he didn’t make it around the curve.”  She sat on the bed.  “My family was coming up to help me make a good memory here for the holiday after… It’s my first Christmas alone.”

He took a step forward.  “You’re not alone now.”

Not in the technical sense, anyway.  “True. Thanks. Would you like more cocoa?”

“Please.”  He backed up to let her out of the room.

Dylan had a hell of a smile.  His whole face lit up with it.  Lee never smiled with his teeth showing; at least, not for a long time before his death.

He followed her to the kitchen.  She filled the kettle with more water and turned on the stove, then got some cookies she’d made the day before out of the pantry.  He sat on the counter watching her, his bare feet swaying back and forth.

“So, Dylan, huh?”

“Yep. Dylan Smith.”

“Not common at all.”

He chuckled.  “Nope. Merely another one of the faceless legion.”

“So, why would you do a performance at Christmas?”

“A favor. I don’t normally do this, but my friends had plans tonight, so I figured what the hell…and slid into a snow bank for my trouble.”

She giggled, handed him one of the mugs, and held up hers for a toast.  “To better luck next year.”

He clinked his mug with hers.  “I’ll drink to that.”

They shared a smile. She couldn’t help doing it when he did, like an automatic reaction of her cheek muscles.

“So, what kind of music do you play?”

He hopped down, careful not to slosh, and walked to his guitar case.  “Some of everything, really.”  He set the mug down and opened the case.  “Let’s see how you fared, old friend.”

He plucked his thumb on the strings, checking their tune, then started playing a combination of embellished scales.  At least to Jennifer’s knowledge, he was really good.  He pushed his sleeves up a bit, revealing toned forearms with corded muscles that twitched and flexed when he played.  Then he started humming something she didn’t know and switched melodies.  Soft words escaped his lips, like he couldn’t help singing it instead of merely humming along.  A smooth pretty baritone that made her tummy flutter.

She stared as he lost himself in the music, his eyes closed and head bobbing in time.  It had turned into an intimate moment.  She was sure he’d forgotten he had an audience and…wow, was it hot in here?

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: Kwanzaa Angel by @shailstock #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - KA

Title:                Kwanzaa Angel

Author:           Shirley Hailstock

Genre: Romance

Book Blurb:

Erin Scott withstood the humiliation of being abandoned at a high school prom by the man of her dreams. Channelling her personal feelings into work, Erin opened a department store which now flourishes and is about to expand. Just as her family gathers for the Kwanzaa celebration, her nemesis returns to town, opening old wounds and throwing her life in to passionate chaos.

Raimi Price regretted his decision almost as soon as he made it, but he couldn’t undo it. Now sixteen years later he’s back, hoping to stay, but reconciling with Erin Scott is a major priority. When he discovers they are both bidding on the same piece of property, his romantic plans stall. Then history threatens to repeat itself complicating matters more.

Can these two bridge the gap and find a lasting love?

Excerpt:

“Can you help me?” Erin Scott felt the tug on her skirt and heard the little voice at the same time. She turned away from the stack of sweaters she’d folded and refolded at least seven times that day. The store was crowded with people taking advantage of the after-Christmas sales. Behind Erin stood a little girl about seven years old with long dark braids.

“My uncle said it was all right to ask a stranger for help as long as I went to the stranger and they did not come to me,” her young voice explained. “He also said a lady would be better than a man.”

Erin smiled as she stooped to the child’s level. “Your uncle must be a very good parent,” she told her.

“Oh, he’s not a parent. He has only me. I’m his favorite niece.” She said it with all the adultness a seven-year-old could muster. Erin stifled a laugh.

“Are you lost?”

“No, ma’am.” She shook her head from side to side.  The long braids, clipped with red barrettes, slapped at her face. She had bangs that flowed dark and engaging to her eyebrows and eyelashes that Erin wished were her own. “I know where I am.”

“Then how can I help you?”

“It’s my uncle. He’s lost.” She checked over her shoulder. “He was buying a gift and I looked around. Then he was gone.”

Erin glanced about the store. Everyone was buying something. It was the second largest shopping day of the year, equal only to Black Friday. The store was so crowded Erin had left her office to join the sales staff.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart. We’ll find him. Now what’s your name?”

“Alicia Marie Allen.”

She spoke distinctly, like she’d learned her name in nursery school.

“Okay, Alicia Marie Allen, my name is Erin.” She pointed to the small white name tag pinned to the lapel of her red suit.

“May I call you Erin?”

Erin nodded.

“My uncle makes me call big people Ms. or Mrs.”

Erin smiled broadly. She wanted to hug the child. “Well maybe in my case, he’ll make an exception. Now what’s your uncle’s name?”

“Uncle Raimi.”

Erin stiffened. She lost her balance, putting her hand on the floor to keep from falling. It couldn’t be him, she told herself.

“Uncle Raimi Price?” Erin asked, grasping at a straw, knowing she was wrong even before the child’s head bobbed up and down.

“Uncle Raimi Price,” the child confirmed with the same aplomb with which she’d given her own name.

Erin caught her gasp before it escaped. Raimi Price was in her store. What was he doing here? When had he returned to Cranbury, New Jersey, and why did no one mention he was in town?

The rumor mill here was as lively as it was in any small community. Cranbury was only a few miles square. She could walk it end to end in under an hour. Yet the grapevine had failed to get word to her that the man who’d dumped her at the senior prom was back and likely to cross paths with her at any moment.

The small hamlet in the center of the state was quiet and reserved with only a meager area they could call downtown. On any summer evening you could find people walking down the streets. At this time of year, they admired the holiday decorations and store scenes. Erin’s store sat in the center of town, near the lake. When she’d bought the old warehouse building, people called her idea crazy, but today those same people shopped there regularly and spoke to her with a smile and a nod. Any one of them could have told her Raimi was back. Yet none of them had. Had they forgotten what happened to her? It was years ago. She was thirty-two now, no longer a sophomore, and no longer in love with Raimi Price. But the pain of his humiliation would live with her forever.

What would Raimi’s presence change? Would they remember what he’d done to her? Of course they would, she told herself. It was a hazard of living in a small town. Everyone knew everyone else and memories were long.

“Do you think we could look for him?” The little voice brought her back to her position on the floor.

“I’ll—I’ll get someone to find him,” Erin stammered.

“There he is.” Alicia’s voice rose with excitement, and she scampered off toward him. Erin wanted to turn away, but she was crouched on the floor. She stood up slowly, fear making her heart beat faster, waiting for that moment when he’d make eye contact with her, the moment he recognized who she was.

In one hand Raimi had a shopping bag with the store’s logo on its side. With the grace of a large cat, he knelt to the floor and received the running child. Erin watched him hug her, then push her away, saying something reprimanding before pulling her against his chest and hugging her again. Finally, he stood, taking the child with him, holding her with only one arm. The other he used to pick up the shopping bag.

Erin hadn’t seen Raimi Price since his last day of high school, sixteen years ago. He’d humiliated her so badly at the senior prom that she never wanted to see him again. Yet here he stood, looking directly at her.

He hadn’t changed much in sixteen years. As a seventeen-year-old, he was the best-looking guy in school: tall, athletic, tight buns. At thirty-four any boyishness he had had long since vanished. The man approaching her was blindingly sexy. His skin was dark and rich like smooth silk. His hair was thick, closely cut, and he wore a small mustache. He still had that outdoor athletic look. Erin remembered thinking he reminded her of a Montana cowboy—rugged, strong, capable-of-anything—and how she’d wanted those strong, capable arms banded about her body.

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: A Kings’ Christmas by @JeanJoachim #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - AKC

Title:  A Kings’ Christmas

Author:   Jean C. Joachim

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

Stress over making the playoffs at holiday time can’t compete with the tensions in the homes of the star players on the Connecticut Kings. From Trunk Mahoney’s shattered dream of a Currier & Ives Christmas to the secret Lauren is keeping from Griff, surprises abound in this last tale of the team.

As the men and their women celebrate the holidays, bad news seems to rival good as accidents, breakups, and unexpected reunions strain love to the breaking point. Who will get their Christmas wish and who will not? If you’ve loved the men of the First & Ten series, then you won’t want to miss this nail-biter, the final chapter that will have you in tears and laughing with the wonderful men of the Connecticut Kings.

Excerpt:

Locker room, Kings’ Stadium, 1 p.m.

Tuffer Demson fingered the diamond ring in his pocket. His nerves were on edge. The Connecticut Kings were playing the Columbus Bobcats today. They had to win. Every game counted double now that the playoffs were around the corner. Or at least that’s the way he felt. The pressure was excruciating.

The young defenseman planned to propose to his live-in girlfriend, Alexia Sebastian, that night, after the big meal. Lexie was his coach’s daughter. Pete Sebastian, the coach, had taken a dim view of her dating Tuffer, and an even more negative eye to her living with her boyfriend. Ever since she’d moved in with him, Coach Bass had kept an eye on him, pushing him to work harder and do more.

He had bounced back and forth between his belief that the coach would be relieved to have Lexie become an “honest” woman versus shacking up, and the nagging suspicion that coach would rather have her marry Attila the Hun than Tuffer Demson. He made good money and was crazy about Lexie. Why shouldn’t they get married?

Never a player on the dating field, Tuffer had hoped to find the right one and make her his. He longed to have a marriage like his parents’—warm, close, and caring. They were best friends. Lexie was the sweetest girl he’d ever met, and she treated him with respect. Besides, she was smokin’, and their love life ignited his fire every time.

“Got your head in the game, Demson? We need to win,” Coach said, scowling.

“Yes, sir. I do, Coach. I do.” But it was a lie. Tuffer worried that Lexie might turn him down. Sure, he made good money, but for how long? He saved every penny he could for the day when football turned its back on him. He knew he wasn’t the brightest bulb. He’d never been a star at school, stealing a spot at a lesser college using his football talents. He’d never have a better chance than on the field to make a pile of money, that was obvious.

After his career was over, he had no idea what he’d do to earn a living. The time to snag a great wife was now. He figured he’d better get a commitment from Lexie while he was in his prime, before she realized she could do a whole lot better than him.

“What are you standing around for, Demson? Put on your uniform and get out there.” Coach’s brow furrowed. Tuffer figured the older man must be nervous about beating the Columbus team, The Bobcats, had been giving them trouble this season, as usual.

He removed his hand from his pocket and opened his locker. Time to get his head in the game before Coach Bass chewed it off.

“You look like you’re gonna hurl,” Trunk Mahoney, the most seasoned defenseman, said.

Tuffer yanked on his jersey. “Feel like it too.”

“What the hell?” Trunk straightened his shoulder pads and faced his teammate.

“Nothing.”

Trunk grabbed the younger man’s arm. “It’s not nothing.”

“I’m proposing tonight. To Lexie.”

“No, to Minnie Mouse. Of course, to Lexie. That’s great, kid!” Trunk grinned and slapped him on the shoulder.

“I don’t know. She might say ‘no’.”

“Aw, come on. Never. She’s livin’ with you, right? You’re makin’ it happen for her, right?”

“Trunk. That’s private.”

“Nothing’s private in here, buddy. What more could she want?”

“Someone with a better brain?”

“Bullshit. She’s lucky to get you. Come on. We’ve got a game to win.”

The coach interrupted their conversation. “Guys! Listen up! Get your butts out on the field! Let’s wipe out the Bobcats, so we can go home and eat! Cream ’em. No overtime! It’s Thanksgiving!”

The men cheered and followed Coach Bass. Trunk walked with Tuffer.

“They’ve got a new wide receiver. Some tool named Thompson. Number twenty-five, I think. Grind the fucker into the ground,” Trunk said.

“Got it. Twenty-Five.”

A cold wind whipped down the field, icing Tuffer’s face, but not his body. Lexie had picked up heavy-duty, thermal long johns for him. He had ’em on. Another reason to marry the girl—she put his welfare first and took good care of him. Maybe not quite as good as his mom did, but then, no one can do it better than a guy’s mother.

As he stood for the national anthem, his mind wandered. He wondered what she’d be doing now. He figured she’d be watching the game on television from the warm, spacious kitchen at Coach’s house, while she helped prepare the big meal.

He glanced up at the stands. His mother waved. She and his father had a blanket under their butts and one over their legs. His mom had insisted they both wear down parkas. He hoped they’d be comfortable. He’d been too embarrassed to ask if they had on long underwear.

Trunk nudged him. “Come on. Get your head in the game.”

“Sorry.” He loped along behind Mahoney to set for the kick-off. Griff Montgomery, the quarterback, had lost the toss, and so they were receiving. Due to injuries to some of the receiving team regulars, Tuffer and Trunk had been recruited by Coach Bass to be on the special team for the kick-off. The whistle blew, and he focused on the ball and protecting his teammates.

“that’s the thing about reunions…” Who We Were by @LindsayDetwiler #romanticcomedy #chicklit

Print

Title:  Who We Were

Author: Lindsay Detwiler

Genre: Chick Lit/Romantic Comedy

Publisher: Hot Tree Publishing

Book Blurb:

I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little.”

In the ten years since high school graduation, Maylee’s career, living arrangements, family, and especially her love life are at a standstill. When her twin brother, Mitch, falls for her high school enemy at their ten-year reunion, Maylee’s life is catapulted into chaos.

Maylee’s hatred for the blonde-haired Josephine isn’t the only thing she discovers at her reunion. Benson Drake, the introvert from high school, has matured into a sexy intellect. Now a writer and bartender, Benson’s grown into a man with a perfect balance of quirky wit and sex appeal. After a wardrobe malfunction, a spy mission gone wrong, and a dangerous cup of coffee, Maylee and Benson explore something they never even thought about during senior year. Along the way, they find out that reconnecting with the past can change you… or maybe just help you find your true self.

Excerpt:

I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little. At least I can admit to it. This has to be the first step to admitting psychosis, right?

Mitch thinks I’ve taken it too far. Shauni, of course, thinks I’m doing the right thing.

“Show those snotty jerks just what you’ve become,” she told me yesterday. “Especially the blonde. Show her you’ve won.”

I’d smiled, munching on my lunch of celery and carrot sticks in my attempt to shed a few more ounces of water weight. Nevertheless, the whole time I was asking myself a very hard question: Have I really won? If I’m going to so much trouble to fool my classmates into thinking I’ve done so well for myself, aren’t there deeper problems than booblessness and a flabby waistline?

Maybe the problem isn’t my body type, my hair, or any of it. Maybe it’s because at twenty-eight, I thought life would be a little different, a little bit more… grown-up.

Looking in the mirror, however, I know I can’t pretend to be all introspective and mature about it. Even though I know it’s ridiculous, there’s a part of me deep down that does want to show her I’ve done okay for myself, no matter what. I want the girl who tortured me in high school, who convinced me I was a mousey nerd, to realize I blossomed.

Even if it is a bit of a lie. Or a lot of a lie.

“Let’s go,” Mitch yells from the living room. I sigh.

No more introspection. It’s go time.

It’s time to face my past.

Lindsay Detwiler

Author Biography:

An English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay’s the English teacher cliché; she loves cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, Marjorie, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay’s goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she’s done her job.

Lindsay’s hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

The Duchess and the Highwayman by @BeverleyOakley #historicalromance #books #romance

The Duchess and the Highwayman image

Title: The Duchess and the Highwayman

Author: Beverley Oakley

Genre: Historical Romance

Book Blurb:

A duchess disguised as a lady’s maid; a gentleman parading as a highwayman.

She’s on the run from a murderer, he’s in pursuit of one…

In a remote Norfolk manor, Phoebe, Lady Cavanaugh is wrongfully accused by her servants of her brutal husband’s murder.

There’s little sympathy in the district for the duchess who’s taken a lover and made clear she despised her husband. The local magistrate has also vowed revenge since Lady Cavanaugh rebuffed his advances.

When Phoebe is discovered in the forest wearing only a chemise stained with the blood of her murdered husband, she persuades the noble ‘highwayman’ who rescues her that she is Lady Cavanaugh’s maidservant.

Hugh Redding has his own reasons for hunting down the man who would have Phoebe tried and hanged for murder. He plans to turn ‘the maidservant with aspirations above her station’ into the ‘lady’ who might testify against the very villain who would see Phoebe dead.

But despite the fierce attraction between Phoebe and the ‘highwayman’, Phoebe is not in a position to admit she’s the ‘murderous duchess’ hunted across the land.

Seizing an opportunity to strike at the social and financial standing of the man who has profited by her distress, Phoebe is drawn into a dangerous intrigue.

But when disaster strikes, she fears Hugh will lack the sympathy or understanding of her unusual predicament to even want to save her a second time.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

It was an evening like any other: dull with a hint of menace and tension so thick Phoebe imagined slicing a neat hole in it and disappearing magically into a new life.

Any would do.

The company had retired to the dim, close drawing room, gentlemen included, following a gluttonous dinner. By the fireplace Phoebe worked at her embroidery, glad to be ignored though she knew that wouldn’t last for long.

The reprieve was even briefer than she’d anticipated. Brutus exhaled on a shuddering snore truncated by a yelp as he chased rabbits in his dreams; this caused James the footman, who was stooping over Ulrick in the act of offering his master a drink, to jump in fright and deposit a snifter of brandy upon her husband’s waistcoat. Not that it would concern Ulrick who was snoring more loudly than Brutus and whose waistcoat was already stained with drool.

The footman cast the mistress a sideways glance as he unwound his lordship’s stock and dabbed at the sticky mess but Phoebe held her tongue and made do with a dispassionate look. She’d never liked James. She was certain he’d conspired with Ulrick on more than a few occasions to put her on the back foot and to tarnish her name below stairs. Despite her obvious disdain, she was afraid of the power he wielded.

“That will be all, James.” She rose with a dismissive wave and the rustle of silken skirts.

“I’ll attend to my husband. Please see Mr Barnaby and Sir Roderick out.”

Sir Roderick, that most unwelcome of neighbours, appeared before her, bony and wraithlike; malevolent as ever. “I believe your dog that needs more attention than Lord Cavanaugh.” His thin mouth turned up in a parody of amusement as he wafted a fastidious hand about his nose, indicating Brutus’s greater guilt than his master’s snoring.

Phoebe offered Sir Roderick a cold smile. On the other side of the room Ulrick’s two other guests conversed in low voices by the window.

She inclined her head as she ignored his attempt at levity. “Good night, Sir Roderick.”

Sir Roderick straightened his spare, weedy frame, which she saw trembled with supressed outrage at being so summarily dismissed by the lady of the house.

Phoebe refused to turn away from his challenging gaze. Sir Roderick was another who couldn’t wait until the doors of Blinley Manor were closed against her the moment Ulrick breathed his last. She’d offended his honour, having bitten his lip and kneed him in the groin six months before when he’d accosted her in a dimly lit corridor and suggested in lewd terms how he might assist in the creation of an heir for the already ailing Ulrick. An heir that would ensure Phoebe kept a roof over her head.

Author Biography:

Beverley Oakley was seventeen when she bundled up her first her 500+ page romance and sent it to a publisher. Unfortunately drowning her heroine on the last page was apparently not in line with the expectations of romance readers so Beverley became a journalist.

Twenty-six years later Beverley was delighted to receive her first publishing contract from Robert Hale (UK) for a romance in which she ensured her heroine was saved from drowning in the icy North Sea.

Since 2009 Beverley has written more than thirteen historical romances, mostly set in England during the early nineteenth century. Mystery, intrigue and adventure spill from their pages and if she can pull off a thrilling race to save someone’s honour – or a worthy damsel from the noose – it’s time to celebrate with a good single malt Scotch.

Beverley lives with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony opposite a picturesque nineteenth century lunatic asylum. She also writes Africa-set adventure-filled romances tarring handsome bush pilot heroes, and historical romances with less steam and more sexual tension, as Beverley Eikli.

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: A Christmas Accident by @Melissa_Keir #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - ACA

Title: A Christmas Accident

Author: Melissa Keir

Genre: Contemporary, Small-Town Romance

Book Blurb:

Expecting her first child, Sherri Wilder Davison wants nothing more than to spend time with her father over the holidays, but fate has a way of changing her best-laid plans.

Adam Davison is willing to do anything to make his pregnant wife happy. He will face hell to have her home for the holidays.

For Sherri and Adam, the holidays are a time of celebration and love, but this Christmas will be unlike any they have ever faced.

When a horrible blizzard causes an automobile accident that puts the lives of those Sherri loves on the line, can a Christmas miracle save them?

Excerpt:

The arctic blast of freezing snow turned Route 2 into a sheet of ice, making travel almost impossible. The drive from Michigan shouldn’t have taken more than three or four hours, but the harsh winter weather increased our time. We’d passed through Sandusky and were almost to Amherst, however, the conditions were continuing to worsen. Peanut was quiet in my tummy as if he too, sensed our terror at the horrible circumstances.

Looking over at Adam, I could see the strain etched on his face. His normally bright eyes were focused intently on the road, never wavering. His hands clenched the steering wheel tightly. Not wanting to add to his stress, I didn’t speak. The silence in the car was deafening. The only sound came from the windshield wipers swishing against the blizzard conditions.

I couldn’t keep quiet any longer. My fear climbed as my heart raced with each pass of the wipers across the window. The smell of stale coffee made my stomach clench.

“Adam, maybe we should stop. You know, wait the storm out. I don’t want to put our lives on the line to get to my dad’s.”

“We’re almost there. Just a little farther.”

Suddenly, out of the blizzard, two red lights appeared in front of us. A stopped car stood on the freeway in front of us. The taillights’ bright glare mocked the whiteness of the snowstorm. Adam slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting the car, only to have our SUV fishtail before sliding toward the median guardrail. Even in four-wheel drive, the car wasn’t a match for the icy conditions.

Adam screamed, “Oh God! Hold on!”

Dread filled my chest, as I gripped the armrests and braced my feet flat against the floor. Please let us be okay. Prayers filled my mind as snow whipped past the windshield. The screeching became the last sound I heard as the car’s body skidded against the metal guardrail before flipping, rolling over and over.

Author’s Favorite Holiday Food/Tradition:

On Christmas Eve, we always went to my father’s side of the family for dinner and presents. It was a special time where we would sing and dance, play games and put on musical shows. My grandparents would cook sauerkraut soup and bake cookies. We’d have special punch and spend time with our cousins. Driving home, we’d “oooh” and “ahh” over the lights on the homes and share our wishes of Christmas Day gifts.

Today, my dad still makes sauerkraut soup for my sisters who get together with him each Christmas Eve. Since we live too far to join them, we’ve started a new tradition of going out for Chinese with my husband’s family. Spending time with family is the most special gift of the holiday season.

And just for your inconvenience, when you comment that you’ve ordered a copy, I’ll enter you in my kindle giveaway for October which I’m announcing on my upcoming newsletter.

A Sneak Peek:

The rumble beneath my feet was the only notice I had of the electric strike that rode straight up my legs, curling in my midsection and crawling swiftly along my right arm to produce my own version of a Fourth of July sparkler, emanating from that fingertip. Then brilliant bolts of crackling white light spit and sizzled in my palm, sending jagged streamers of hot blue fire ten feet into the air.

I gawked.

A car entering a nearby street freed me from the mesmerizing light display. This was different from any of the charging I’d previously experienced. Bigger. Usually it just sort of replenished on its own. Panicked, I looked over my shoulder, and exhaled. So far so good.

Now what? I needed to command the fire in my hand to… what? Before I could say, “Be gone,” or “Go thither,” the light subsided to a small crackly glow. That was it then. Instinct took over. I knelt beside Mr. Jackson and placed my glowing index finger against his chest. With a single szzwaattt, I zapped him, right in the heart. His chest arched up only the barest of seconds as it met my magical defibrillator, then his body relaxed.

Momentarily deafened and somewhat addled as my faculties came back online, I groped for the pulse in his neck. For a second, I thought I’d failed. But then, his tired, smoke glutted organ started beating.

Thank the gods.

Only the slight whiff of burnt flesh remained on the wind. Drained of energy, I swiped the back of my hand across my forehead. And spotted the mark.

“Zeus’ rechargeable bolts! That better be temporary.”

Centered on the spot where I’d zapped him, a pale image was forming. It looked like a pale, mini version of… well… me.

#CHRISTMASINJULY FETE: The Bastard’s Iberian Bride by @AlinaKField #ROMANCE #BOOKS #GIVEAWAY

Christmas in July Book Square - TBIB

Title: The Bastard’s Iberian Bride

Author:       Alina K. Field

Genre:        Regency Romance

Book Blurb:

Daughter of spies

For a chance at true freedom, Paulette Heardwyn needs the fortune left her by her inscrutable father. But she doesn’t know what it is, where it is, or how to find it, and the only man with answers, the Earl of Shaldon, takes his secrets to the grave. Worse, the dead earl tries to force her marriage to his bastard son—and leaves her prey to a traitor seeking the same treasure she’s after.

Soldier, Steward, Bastard

Bink Gibson is ready to throw off his quiet life as steward to his old commander and head for India and the chance of prosperity. But before he can leave he’s summoned to the deathbed of the Earl of Shaldon, a meddling spymaster, a complete stranger…and his father.

And the Earl has set a trap Bink will never be able to resist.

Excerpt:

A tap at the door brought the innkeeper’s smiling, buxom maid with a flagon of ale and a pint tankard. Bink thanked her for the drink, and silently, for the interruption, and started speaking before the door shut on the wench, before the lady across from him could stop glaring at her and untie her tongue.

“I know we haven’t gone far, Miss Heardwyn, but it is, if you will remember, the Sabbath, and in spite of it, we’ve all had a hard day’s labor. The servants are entitled to a rest. Kincaid and the men will watch over your wagon. Nothing will go missing.”

She studied her teacup and worried at her lush lower lip with those perfect white teeth. She was a beauty, was Miss Heardwyn, much more to his taste than the flaxen-haired serving wench, and in other circumstances…

“As to the cost.” She cleared her throat.

“You are not to worry, miss. I’ve said you will have any monies Shaldon has left me, and I mean it. I will bear the cost tonight, and tomorrow we’ll make the arrangements with Bakeley for the rest.”

Her gaze shot up, eyes flashing. She did not want to be in his debt.

Or… she did not want to return to Cransdall.

She stood and walked to the fireplace. The room had gone warm, and he debated opening one of the casement windows a tad wider.

“Mabel, wait outside please,” the lady said, her back to the both of them.

Bink eased out of his chair. “Leave the door open, Mabel. You may stand outside and eavesdrop but don’t allow anyone else to listen.”

The maid’s lips quivered as she curtsied and hurried out.

He turned back to the lady. “Is this where you tell me you will not return to Cransdall?”

Paulette’s breath caught. Mr. Gibson had moved up next to her with a great deal of stealth, close enough to lay hands on her if he wished.

His big body radiated warmth and suffused her with his scent. Even after a hard day of riding, the man-scent was subtle, no stronger than her farmer’s had been on a Sunday morning, dressed in his best. But the yeoman farmer had repelled her. There was nothing repellant about Mr. Gibson.

She reached for some calm, trying to still her heart. She was shorter than most women, true, but even if she’d been tall for a woman, he would still tower over her. He spread one enormous hand against the mantel and leaned into it, sending her heart fluttering into her throat.

She coughed to clear it. She must not let him think her weak. “Returning to Cransdall is out of the question for me. If you take me there, I will never be able to leave.”

Quiet followed, the long silence making her wonder if he’d actually heard.

“Where do you want to go?” he asked.

This inn was on the main road, the groom had said. She might have enough money to get to London, and then a bit more for her keep once she arrived. For a few days, anyway. Once she located the solicitor and one of her trustees, she would be provided for, surely.

She would not tell him those plans.

“What of your belongings we rescued today?” he asked, before she could speak.

Grrr. He was tricky, this one. She had not thought that far ahead. “They will be safe at Cransdall, surely. Kincaid and the grooms can take them back. You can return to your home.”

“And you—”

“You are not my keeper, Mr. Gibson.”

He studied her for a too-long moment, sending warmth up her cheeks. She would not look away. She would not give him the satisfaction.

“I’ll ask you to sleep on it, and we’ll talk again at breakfast.” He reached one long finger up and swept a lock of hair behind her ear.

His touch jolted her, too delicate for the man. She could feel her breath rising and falling like a bellows-blown fire, all deliciously lit up within her, with a promise of something she couldn’t fathom.

Author’s Favorite Holiday Food/Tradition:

I love many holiday traditions, but my favorite is gathering around the table with family for a special Christmas Day meal. Usually, it’s roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, but last year we did a full brunch: ham, Belgian waffles, mini-frittatas, fruit salad, and champagne. That may be our new tradition!

Author Biography:

Award winning author Alina K. Field earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and German literature, but her true passion is the much happier world of romance fiction. Though her roots are in the Midwestern U.S., after six very, very, very cold years in Chicago, she moved to Southern California and hasn’t looked back. She shares a midcentury home with her husband, her spunky, blonde, rescued terrier, and the blue-eyed cat who conned his way in for dinner one day and decided the food was too good to leave.

She is the author of the 2014 Book Buyer’s Best winner, Rosalyn’s Ring, a 2015 RONE Award finalist, Bella’s Band, and a 2016 National Reader’s Choice Award finalist, Liliana’s Letter, as well as her latest release, The Marquess and the Midwife. She is hard at work on her next series of Regency romances, but loves to hear from readers!

Just Friends by @AuthorStacyGold is Hot Enough to Melt Ice #romance #bookreview #FridayReads

Title: Just Friends

Author: Stacy Gold

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Novella

Book Blurb:

Taya Monroe is trying to pick up the pieces of her failed writing career and broken life after walking out on her cheating fiancé. The last thing she needs is a serious relationship. The last thing she wants is a fling. Then she runs into an old friend and ski partner—the one man she always wanted who never wanted her.

Ski Patroller Jordan Wiley is a single dad with zero time or energy for dating. When he reconnects with Taya, his attraction to her is even stronger than before she left him behind for a career in the city. But with a young son to think about, he’s determined to ignore his feelings. Again.

After a magical day on the slopes, a snow storm traps them in an avalanche of chemistry neither can deny. Will their friendship survive the weight of their passion or will they surface as more than friends?

My Review:

Taya is going through a rough patch and is staying with her sister’s family. They’re enjoying some fun on the slopes when her brother-in-law gets hurt. The last person she expected to run into is her old friend and high school crush, Jordan. Looking hot enough to melt the snow beneath his feet, Taya’s desire for him resurfaces. He invites her to come skiing tomorrow and she reluctantly accepts. It’s not like he’s interested in her, right?

Jordan can’t believe his good luck when he runs into Taya again. All his feelings rush back ten-fold but he’s a single dad now and he has responsibilities. The more time he spends with her, the stronger his passion engulfs him. When she gets stranded due to a snow storm and he offers his tiny little camper as shelter, he can’t resist her charms any longer. Will their friendship go up in flames or will they stay just friends?

I loved this ski romantic short story. It’s about second chances, unrequited love and doing what you love to do. Told in dual POV, you get both sides of the attraction, which I adored! Taya and Jordan have electrifying chemistry, so much so that my fingers were singed. I read it in one sitting and was sad when it ended. I want more!

If you’re looking for a romantic quickie, pick up this book. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote:

“I’d forgotten what it felt like to have fun. And to be around a man who looked at me like I was beautiful and strong, and smart enough to do anything.”

Mrs. N Needs Your Help! Choose Which #Books to Take on #Vacation! #amreading #FridayReads

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. It’s one week until we go on our summer vacation. I’m trying to figure out which book(s) to bring with me to read beside the pool and after my daily spa treatment. So, I went online to Amazon and found some contenders. Which one should I choose? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Desperate Bride (Forever Brides) by A.S. Fenichel  (I have the ARC, thanks to Netgalley)

An unexpected promise . . . an everlasting passion.

An accomplished musician, Dorothea Flammel has refused more proposals than any London debutante; her only true love is her music. Dory’s shimmering talent and beauty have long been adored from afar by Thomas Wheel, an untitled gentleman who can only dream of asking for the hand of a nobleman’s daughter. But when her father, the insolvent Lord Flammel, arranges for Dory to marry a lecherous Earl in order to pay off a debt, she runs to Thomas—and proposes marriage to him.

Eloping to Scotland saves Dory from a disastrous fate, but what is for her a mere marriage of convenience proves more passionate—and more complex—than either imagined as rumors, scandal, and buried emotions come to light. And when a vengeful challenge from a drunken and embittered Lord Flammel puts Thomas’s life on the line, will the fragile trust between husband and wife be enough to save them both?

The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks by Charles E. Yallowitz

Enter the world of Windemere with 11 action adventure short stories featuring a man who is out to make an honest living.

Some heroes seek fame. Some seek fortune. Others simply want to save the world. Ichabod Brooks only wants to put food on the table for his family.

Known and respected as the man who can get any job done, Ichabod has seen his share of adventure. Most of which have been highly exaggerated by bards. Still, the man has his famous reputation for a reason. Whether it be climbing a temperamental mountain for eggs or escorting orphans to their new homes, Ichabod takes every job seriously and makes sure he is as prepared as he can be. Not that it helps since things always take a turn for the worse.

Lucky Bastard: My Life, My Dad, and the Things I’m Not Allowed to Say on TV by Joe Buck

In this New York Times bestselling memoir, the announcer of the biggest sporting events in the country—including the 2017 Super Bowl and this century’s most-watched, historic, Chicago Cubs–winning World Series—reveals why he is one lucky bastard.

Sports fans see Joe Buck everywhere: broadcasting one of the biggest games in the NFL every week, calling the World Series every year, announcing the Super Bowl every three years. They know his father, Jack Buck, is a broadcasting legend and that he was beloved in his adopted hometown of St. Louis.

Yet they have no idea who Joe really is. Or how he got here. They don’t know how he almost blew his career. They haven’t read his funniest and most embarrassing stories or heard about his interactions with the biggest sports stars of this era.

They don’t know how hard he can laugh at himself—or that he thinks some of his critics have a point. And they don’t know what it was really like to grow up in his father’s shadow. Joe and Jack were best friends, but it wasn’t that simple. Jack, the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals for almost fifty years, helped Joe get his broadcasting start at eighteen. But Joe had to prove himself, first as a minor league radio announcer and then on local TV, national TV with ESPN, and then finally on FOX. He now has a successful, Emmy-winning career, but only after a lot of dues-paying, learning, and pretty damn entertaining mistakes that are recounted in this book.

In his memoir, Joe takes us through his life on and off the field. He shares the lessons he learned from his father, the errors he made along the way, and the personal mountain he climbed and conquered, all of which have truly made him a Lucky Bastard.

Camino Island: A Novel by John Grisham

A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a secure vault deep below Princeton University’s Firestone Library. Their loot is priceless, but Princeton has insured it for twenty-five million dollars.
Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in the black market of stolen books and manuscripts.
Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer’s block who has recently been laid off from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even more mysterious company. A generous offer of money convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate Bruce Cable’s circle of literary friends, ideally getting close enough to him to learn his secrets.
But eventually Mercer learns far too much, and there’s trouble in paradise as only John Grisham can deliver it.

As Lady Hardcastle and Flo delve deeper into rural rivalries and resentment, they uncover a web of intrigue that extends far beyond the village. With almost no one free from suspicion, they can be certain of only one fact: there is no such thing as a quiet life in the country.

Midnight Curse (Disrupted Magic Book 1) by Melissa F. Olson

Scarlett Bernard is used to cleaning up messes. As a human who cancels out any magic around her, Scarlett’s job is to keep the supernatural world hidden—at any cost.

But on the eve of the Vampire Trials, a two-day tribunal that allows the otherworldly community to air their grievances, Scarlett receives a blood-soaked message from Molly, her estranged former roommate. Molly, a vampire, had been living with twelve human college students…and in one terrible night, she slaughtered them all.

Scarlett believes Molly’s been set up, but no one else in the Old World agrees with her. Meanwhile, the true perpetrator is determined to make sure Molly goes on trial for the massacre—and the penalty is death.

With less than two days to prove her friend’s innocence, Scarlett calls on former LAPD detective Jesse Cruz to help her dig into Molly’s past. But no one—Molly included—wants Scarlett and Jesse to bring the terrible truth to light.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For readers of The Nightingale and Sarah’s Key, inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine, this remarkable debut novel reveals the power of unsung women to change history in their quest for love, freedom, and second chances.

New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939—and then sets its sights on France.

An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences.

For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power.

The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents—from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland—as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.
