Title: Charm School Night Play Lesson 3

Author: Lynn Carmer

Genre: Multicultural Romance/ Romantic Comedy/ Erotic Romance

Book Blurb:

She wants a sizzling fling…

Athena Calvo is as tough as nails.

She’s also newly divorced and emotionally vulnerable. To get herself back out on the dating scene, she volunteers to teach the next charm school class: Sensation Play. She immerses herself in blindfolds, silk scarves, wax play, and more! She knows Tommy Lagos wants to help her with hands-on research, but she’s looking for a short term commitment. There’s just one problem.

He wants forever…

Tommy Lagos never takes life too seriously.

He is a beast in the ring and between the sheets. His shredded muscles and wicked charm have taken him far, but behind his cocky grin lives ambition, fire, and a drive to fight for everything that matters—especially Athena. He knows he can seduce her into giving him more than a few days.

He will own her body, one blindfold at a time, but will he be able to seduce her into risking her guarded heart?

Excerpt:

Tommy’s eyes ran over the goddess standing in front of him, her burnt lilac hair brushing her tattooed shoulder. She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m gonna make her mine. “I meant what I said. I want to help you with the class.”

Athena looked down and scuffed her shoe against the damp grass. “Tommy, listen, you’re a great guy—”

“Dare told me what it’s about.”

Her head snapped up. “What exactly did he tell you?”

“He told me about the past two classes, and the…subject of each class.” He was getting hot under his non-existent collar, not from embarrassment but because he imagined Athena experimenting with him.

“He told you what my class is about?”

He crossed his arms and cocked his head to the side. “Hell, yeah. That’s the first thing I asked.”

“And you understand”—her searing gaze swept down his primed body—“what that means?”

He stepped forward, his fists clenched. “Intimately.”

“From research or experience?”

He grinned, loving how she gnawed at her plump, bottom lip. “I’m an MMA trainer, stressing kinetic learning in all of my classes. That means hands-on. Always.” He traced a finger along her cheek and over the stubborn cleft in her chin. “Let me help you.”

She shook her head and took two big steps back. “I think there are no bigger con artists on the planet than the Lagos’ boys.”

“Trust me.” Tommy’s Spider-sense was tingling. Her cheeks were flushed, she was having a hard time meeting his eyes. She would never admit it, but she was interested.

Then she knocked him on his butt by demanding, “Prove it.”

“Here? Now?” He looked over at her and the hotdog-shaped dog at her feet.

“See? You have no idea what sensation play is or you’d have listed five different techniques already. Like I said. Con artist.” She adjusted her mutt’s collar. “Come on, Fitzy, I’m done with amateur hour.”

Tommy’s whole body went on alert. Athena was fire, a barely banked inferno. He could feel the smoldering blaze living under her bronzed skin, and he only had minutes to convince her to give him a chance. Because he wanted to revel in that firestorm, bask in it for as long as she’d let him. He blocked her path and stepped in close.

“If you’re a beginner, I recommend, silk scarves, rose petals, maybe some feathers that I would trail over your skin.”

Athena stutter-stepped and came to a halt.

“When you’re comfortable, I’ll use something a little more intense, ice cubes, hot wax…”

Her breath shallowed, her chest rising and falling with each indrawn breath. She slowly turned, her hazel eyes narrowing in on him.

He was greedy for more than just her gaze. “When you trust me, when you truly give your body to mine, I’ll cover your beautiful eyes and tie you up. Mute your hearing so…”

“Stop.”

“No.” His head spun, the sizzle of her heated skin only inches from his. He would get past her defenses. Athena’s reservations were more than shallow excuses. “I’m defending myself.”

Her breath hitched, and she stepped forward.

“We may even have to discuss a safe word if you—”

“Enough.” She slapped a hand over his mouth and laughed softly. “I take it back, I swear. Just stop—”

He nipped at her palm and then kissed it when she yelped.

“Damn, Tommy. You really are a surprise.” Her thumb brushed his lower lip, and her narrowed gaze caressed his face.

“Athena.” Say yes.

She dropped her hand. “But my answer is still…no.”

Excerpt:

A certain fantasy played in my head, and I grinned. Cardwell’s childlike innocence gave way to confusion.

“Why are you grinning?”

The kopfkino ground to a halt right before the good part started. “Uh, A-Adriana.” I offered a silent thank you for the cover of darkness so he couldn’t see the flush creeping up. The stutter I couldn’t do anything about.

“Adriana? Whatever for?”

His voice relayed the look of confusion I could barely see, and I babbled to divert his attention. “Remember right after we started shooting, she droned on and on about how we should be filming in Baltimore because it’s a show about Poe—”

Cardwell offered his Vincent impersonation. “‘Five words, Adriana. Soundstage, b-roll, and tax breaks.’ Yeah, that was funny…”

I exhaled my relief, thinking I’d skirted his question.

“But it wasn’t that funny.” Cardwell shifted in his seat and faced me. “Tell me why you were really giggling.”

The flush heated to what felt like boiling point. I pressed my lips together to stop myself from blurting.

“Come on, Izzie.” He angled his head closer. “Distract me from the fact my nose feels like it’s about ready to fall off.”

The wink he shot me told me he was teasing, but my heart jumped to the pit of my stomach anyway. “Great. Play the injured card. Like I don’t feel bad enough already.”

He unbuckled his seat belt and swiveled to look at me, his grin stretching from ear to ear.

Shit. Who could say no to that? “Fine.” I hugged my arms to my chest. “You follow From Poe to Know, right?”

He slung his arm over the back of my seat. “Of course. Everyone does.”

I drummed a beat against my upper arm with my thumb, hoping I didn’t screw up and reveal my secret identity. “Well, a couple of weeks ago, she posed a question asking what people would do if they had thirty minutes alone with you.”

“Not one of her more inspired blogs, but some of the comments were…interesting.”

Cardwell’s reply sounded forced, and I wondered if his cheeks were burning as brightly as mine. “Yeah.” I thought back to the short drinking spree with Delly. “Point is, I now know what I’d do with my thirty minutes of alone time.”

“Oh, yeah?” He scooted closer to the edge of his seat, near enough for me to make out the corners of his mouth twitching. “What’s that?”

“I’d be driving. You’d be sleeping. How’s that for a fantasy?” I tore my eyes from his Medusa gaze. He wouldn’t turn me to stone, but if I kept looking at him, I’d still be doomed.

He tugged lightly on a curl that had come loose from my hair tie. “Wasn’t really what you were thinking, was it?”

“Nope.” My fingers toyed with the cracked, jagged edges of the steering wheel.

He leaned close. “You won’t tell me?”

The hair tie lost its fight, and my curls tumbled down my back. I shivered at his breath on my neck and shook my head. “Not a chance in hell.”

He grinned, his eyes sparkling in the glow of the streetlight. “Guess I’ll have to use my imagination, then.” He cracked open his door. “Come on, fantasy girl. Work calls.”

“that’s the thing about reunions…” Who We Were by @LindsayDetwiler #romanticcomedy #chicklit

Print

Title:  Who We Were

Author: Lindsay Detwiler

Genre: Chick Lit/Romantic Comedy

Publisher: Hot Tree Publishing

Book Blurb:

I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little.”

In the ten years since high school graduation, Maylee’s career, living arrangements, family, and especially her love life are at a standstill. When her twin brother, Mitch, falls for her high school enemy at their ten-year reunion, Maylee’s life is catapulted into chaos.

Maylee’s hatred for the blonde-haired Josephine isn’t the only thing she discovers at her reunion. Benson Drake, the introvert from high school, has matured into a sexy intellect. Now a writer and bartender, Benson’s grown into a man with a perfect balance of quirky wit and sex appeal. After a wardrobe malfunction, a spy mission gone wrong, and a dangerous cup of coffee, Maylee and Benson explore something they never even thought about during senior year. Along the way, they find out that reconnecting with the past can change you… or maybe just help you find your true self.

Excerpt:

I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little. At least I can admit to it. This has to be the first step to admitting psychosis, right?

Mitch thinks I’ve taken it too far. Shauni, of course, thinks I’m doing the right thing.

“Show those snotty jerks just what you’ve become,” she told me yesterday. “Especially the blonde. Show her you’ve won.”

I’d smiled, munching on my lunch of celery and carrot sticks in my attempt to shed a few more ounces of water weight. Nevertheless, the whole time I was asking myself a very hard question: Have I really won? If I’m going to so much trouble to fool my classmates into thinking I’ve done so well for myself, aren’t there deeper problems than booblessness and a flabby waistline?

Maybe the problem isn’t my body type, my hair, or any of it. Maybe it’s because at twenty-eight, I thought life would be a little different, a little bit more… grown-up.

Looking in the mirror, however, I know I can’t pretend to be all introspective and mature about it. Even though I know it’s ridiculous, there’s a part of me deep down that does want to show her I’ve done okay for myself, no matter what. I want the girl who tortured me in high school, who convinced me I was a mousey nerd, to realize I blossomed.

Even if it is a bit of a lie. Or a lot of a lie.

“Let’s go,” Mitch yells from the living room. I sigh.

No more introspection. It’s go time.

It’s time to face my past.

Lindsay Detwiler

Author Biography:

An English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay’s the English teacher cliché; she loves cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, Marjorie, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay’s goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she’s done her job.

Lindsay’s hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

****

This is the first in the Single Ladies’ Travel Agency series, stand-alone Contemporary Romance novels to take you to a faraway place and get your mind racing!

The second story in this series, GOING HARD, is set for release August 1st!

18+ Excerpt:

“Okay, fine.” I sit up and lean in, ready to open my soul to her. “After the breakup it took me forever to get to the point where I feel strong enough to do something like this. I was stuck in a stifling relationship for far too long, and it sucked my spirit away. I want it back. It’s finally time to embrace my singleness. I want to be Independent Adriana, at least for a little.”

She pulls back and stares at me, her brown eyes sizing me up to make sure I haven’t been replaced by a pod person. “You’ve been single for over a year. You’re telling me you’re only embracing it now?” She looks dismayed as it hits her just how hard the last twelve months have been for me. That’s what happens with happy people; sometimes they don’t notice the ones suffering around them. But I can’t exactly hold it against her. She has her own life to think about and besides, it’s not like I reached out to help. I’m a silent sufferer, damn it.

“A year in which I’m fairly sure I reached the second coming of my virginity,” I reply. “But I’ve come to accept my aloneness, and I feel pretty good about it, actually. I’m really, truly content. Happy, even.”

“Well, good. I’m pissed off that Roger made you feel shitty for that long, though. That jerkass wasn’t worth suffering over.”

“Roger didn’t make me feel shitty. I made myself feel shitty. Look, you’re married—happily, I might add—and meanwhile I failed at the one long-term relationship I’ve ever had. It was a punch to my self esteem.”

“You didn’t fail. He failed you by being such a twat waffle. But back to the one year thing—has it really been that long since you got laid?” She looks like she’s trying to sort through one of the great mysteries of the universe. How the hell can a woman survive without sex for more than ten days in a row?

I nod, not sure whether to be ashamed or proud of my involuntary abstinence. “More than a year, actually. Roger and I didn’t exactly play hide le golf pencil for the last bit.”

“Well, your vagina has probably shrivelled into something that looks like a piece of dried fruit by now. Maybe a dirty romp with a French sausage is what you need.”

“My vagina is just fine, thank you.” I give her my best attempt at a snarl. “But this isn’t really about my naughty bits. It’s about me. I want to do something purely for myself. It’s been a long time since I’ve had that luxury.”

For a moment Jen’s face actually exhibits trace amounts of sympathy. This is what friends do—give you hell for your crazy decisions, then remember that they love you too much to be snarky for long.

“Fair enough,” she says. “Go to Paris and have a blast. You deserve it.”

I sit back in my seat and beam with satisfaction. She’s right.

I do.

“But there’s one thing I’m confused about,” she adds. Here it comes. “I thought you were looking for a new job? What happened to that plan?”

I bite my lip again. I do that when I’m nervous. “The search can wait a little while. Besides, I have another plan, one that I intend to set in motion while I’m in Paris.”

“Uh-huh.” Jen’s nodding, but her expression says What the hell are you up to?

“You know how my last job gave me a three-month severance because my boss was a douchebag with grabby hands and they didn’t want a sexual harassment lawsuit on their hands?”

“Yup, I’m all too familiar with Mr. Gropey and his penchant for ass-grabbery,” Jen replies, a flash of rage passing over her features. She and I have talked at length about my asshole former employer. Needless to say, she strongly encouraged my departure from the company where I worked as a woefully uninspired data entry specialist. Not only did I hate my job, but I hated that some days I was tempted to wear a sign that read:

My tits are not company property,

And my ass is not a hand-warmer.

“Well, that severance package gives me some time to ponder my next move. Plus…” Here it comes. The moment of truth. The greatest test our friendship has ever faced. Please, Jen, don’t snort-laugh at me. I muster every ounce of confidence that I have and look her in the eye. “I’ve been thinking, and I’ve decided I want to write a novel.”

“What?” The word shoots out of her like a bullet, her mouth dropping open for the hundredth time tonight. Everything I say is a shock to her system, poor woman. Well, at least she’s not snorting. Or laughing, for that matter.

“I have a degree in journalism and English Lit. I should be writing,” I tell her, determined to make her understand why I’d venture into a career that’s a massive financial risk, to put it mildly. “Writing is what I’ve always wanted to do.”

“Okay,” she says, placing her palms flat on the table. “Cool.”

I brace myself, ready to go on a tirade about how she should be more supportive, how this is my dream, how I want to be inspired by the romance of Paris, how…

Wait—was that it?

“Nothing?” I ask, dumbfounded. “No reaction?”

To my massive relief, her face lights up in the warmest smile I’ve ever seen. “Here’s my reaction: I want you to be happy. If writing makes you happy, you should do it. If going to Paris without your best friend makes you happy…”

“Ah ha! There’s the real issue at last,” I laugh. “You’re jealous as fuck.

“Of course I am. So jealous I could kill you.”

“That’s perfectly understandable. Just…do me one favour.”

“What?”

“Wait until after I get back to murder me, would you?”

Fat Girl Begone! by @dehaggerty is #RomanticComedy Gold! #bookreview #romance #RRBC

FatGirlBegone_final

Title: Fat Girl Begone!

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

I’m a total mess. My boyfriend dumped me – get this – because I diet too much. Not because I’m fat, mind you. Of course, this spurs me into the diet-fitness-revenge-plan of the century, which leads me to the gym and a scorching hot personal trainer. I even manage to make some cool new friends, including a millionaire if you can believe it. Things are looking up! Naturally, that’s the moment my ex decides he wants me back, the personal trainer asks me out, and my millionaire male buddy decides to throw his hat in the ring. But that’s not enough drama. No, not for me. Because I’ve also lost my job and decided to start my own business. Just call me Ms. Drama.

Warning: Bad language, bumpy roads, and embarrassing moments ahead. But there’s also more than a bit of romance and even, if we’re lucky, love. Fingers crossed.

Not endorsed by or affiliated with any brand of tequila.

My Review:

Everly is having a bad day. First, her boyfriend dumps her because, and I quote, “I diet too much and don’t love myself.” Yeah, talk about a douchebag. So she calls up her best friend, Blaze, and there’s lots of tequila drinking. The next morning, Blaze picks her up and drags her to the gym to meet up with Evie’s brand new hotter than hot personal trainer. Yup, while drunk on tequila, Evie signed up for a gym membership and six months personal training sessions. Why? Because she, like most of us women out there when we get dumped, wants to have a great bod when she runs into her ex again and have him beg to take her back.

But the universe has a funny sense of humor. While Evie wants to lose weight to show up her ex, Josh, she meets two hot guys who are interested in dating her. There’s her drop-dead gorgeous personal trainer, Gabriel, who flirts with her and then asks her out for a date. Then there’s the cute but geeky Carter, a member at the gym who’s clearly interested in her. Which one will Evie choose?

I’m a huge Haggerty fan and pretty much anything she writes is romantic comedy gold. I’m serious. Move over Kinsella and Fielding, you’ve got competition with D. E. Haggerty. Not only does she create such life-like characters and situations (has she been stealing my diary?), but she’s one of the few writers out there who’s got the gift for comedic timing. It takes talent to blend humorous situation with laugh out loud (yes, I’m peeing my pants) dialogue and Haggerty’s got it in spades.

Okay, let’s talk about Fat Girl Begone! and what I loved about it. I instantly connected with Everly and her over-fascination with her “jiggly” bits. She’s just been dumped and suddenly finds herself trying to keep up with the beautiful gym people. Hey, I’ve been there and done that. Then, she’s got three men trying to win her attention. I love Carter best but that could be my inner geek coming out. Everly’s best friend (Blaze) is the best friend in the world and has got Evie’s back! She’s my favorite character next to Everly and Carter. She loves her best friend and wants the best for her. Every gal has to have a bestie like Blaze, who tells it like it is.

If you love romantic comedy and all the hijinx that comes along with life’s ups and downs, Fat Girl Begone! is a must-read! I loved it so much and it’s Haggerty’s best book to date!

Favorite Character/Quote:

“You’re not getting this. You’re it for me. I feel it in my bones. You’re not out of my league. Your league is so far above mine, I’m surprised you even noticed me let alone looked down and smiled upon me.”

And a bonus second quote because they’re both my favorite quote(s) –

And then we celebrate. Without clothes. The best kind of celebrating there is.

D E Haggerty

Author Biography:

I grew-up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. But being a lawyer really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out being a B&B owner wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before deciding to follow the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.

Fat Girl Begone! is my eleventh book.

Title: Fat Girl Begone!

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Romantic Comedy, Contemporary Romance

Excerpt:

Carter is changed into street clothes by the time I join him at the entrance to the gym. He’s wearing jeans with more holes than material and a Star Wars t-shirt with a picture of a storm trooper and the words ‘Chicks dig the uniform’ printed underneath.

“In case anyone was confused about whether you’re a geek or not?” I raise an eyebrow at him as I try not to laugh out loud. Or at least not too loud.

He shrugs. “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

“Okay. A well-rounded geek who can quote Oscar Wilde.”

“That’s Oscar Wilde?” He winks. “Come on. There’s a little bar next door.”

We quickly walk to the bar where I am obviously not the only person enjoying the pleasure of athleisure apparel. “Someone took the whole location, location, location advice and ran with it.” The place is the standard model of a sports bar except it’s not full of men getting off work and catching a game on the big screen. Nope. The place is packed with people telling themselves that the calories in the beer don’t count if they worked out first. At least that’s what I plan on telling myself.

Carter puts his hand on the small of my back and gently leads me to a small high table to the side of the bar. “Tequila?”

I shake my head. “Not unless you want to find out if this high table can support my weight when I decide to dance on it.”

He looks under the table and studies the joints. “Looks like it can take it.”

“Are you an engineer as well as Star Wars aficionado?”

He shrugs. “Does software engineer count?” I ignore his question and ask for a beer.

“So,” Carter starts as he sets down two extra-large frosty mugs of beer. “What’s going on?”

I shrug and take a long pull on my beer. “It’s just been a really tough week.”

“You looked pretty happy when you finished with your personal trainer on Wednesday.” Is that a jealous tone I detect? I study Carter’s face, but he keeps his expression neutral as he takes a drink from his mug.

“Just some issues at work.”

“Anything I can help with?”

I bark out a laugh. “Not unless you have $150,000 you can part with.”

“I can loan you the money if you like.” He says the words as if it’s no big deal to have access to that kind of money. Who is this guy?

“Do you really have that kind of money?” I slap my hand over my mouth when I realize what I just asked. “Forget I said that. I’m sorry.”

Carter shrugs. “I’m not. It’s no secret that I have some money. If you need it, all you have to do is ask.”

I lean forward and study his face for signs he’s pulling my leg. “Oh my god, you’re not kidding. You do have the money.”

He raises an eyebrow at me. “You really don’t know who I am?”

Is that some kind of trick question? “You’re Carter.” I point to his t-shirt. “Lover of Star Wars. I’m still in suspense about whether you love Star Trek as well.”

“You’ll just have to wait to find out.” He winks before leaning back. He stares at me and remains quiet for longer than is comfortable. Finally, he shrugs. “You may have heard of my company. Carter Enterprises.”

“So, you do love Star Trek!”

Shopping for a CEO’s Wife by @jkentauthor #romanticcomedy #romance

Shopping for a CEO’s Wife
Julia Kent
(Shopping for a Billionaire, #12)
Publication date: April 25th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance

Snowbound. Sounds so romantic, with visions of cuddling before a roaring fire, hot chocolate spiked with brandy, and a secret elopement.

Wait. What?

My fiancé’s father won’t stop trying to turn our pending wedding into a three-ring media circus so he can get free publicity for his family’s Fortune 500 company. My mother has decided she’s done with All Things Wedding and asks her teacup Chihuahua for mother-of-the-bride advice.

They’ve all gone certifiably mad.

Then the stress from the wedding puts my mother in the hospital, I scream at my future father-in-law in front of a camera crew and the video goes viral, and the romantic wedding that started with Andrew’s grand Pride and Prejudice proposal looks less like Jane Austen and more like Dostoyevsky.

So what do you do when you’re a fixer and you can’t fix something?

You give up on it.

Not on Andrew, silly.

The wedding.

Shopping for a CEO’s Wife is the 12th book in Julia Kent’s New York Times bestselling Shopping series. As Shannon and Declan enjoy their newlywed bliss, Andrew’s father wants to exploit Amanda and Andrew’s nuptials, much to Amanda’s chagrin. Can she learn to stand up to her future father-in-law and fight for what’s right? But the real question is: will Spritzy the teacup Chihuahua end up being a flower girl?

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon by @jkentauthor #romance #comedy #giveaway

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon
Julia Kent
Publication date: January 31st 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance

He is addicted to his phone and his new role as CEO. I’m addicted to getting some on my own honeymoon.

One of these things is not like the other.

I am pretty sure a serial killer’s lair is the only place in the world where I could stash my new husband so he can’t manage the acquisition of our new company.

And that seems a little drastic.

But only a little…

All I want is one week alone with him. Hours in bed, legs tangled together in ecstasy, room service and long walks on the beach in Hawaii.

Not vying for his kisses around a Bluetooth microphone. The Borg aren’t sexy in real life.

So I’m taking matters into my own hands and hitting “reboot” on our honeymoon.

We’re going to a place so remote that no one can find us.

Not even my mother.

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Honeymoon is now a full-length book of 150+ pages, with both Shannon and Declan’s points of view. Originally published with only Shannon’s viewpoint, this expanded edition is a result of reader feedback. People wanted to know what Declan was up to – so here you go. This book is meant to be read after Shopping for a Billionaire’s Wife and/or Shopping for a CEO’s Fiancée, but if you read it out of order (or even as a standalone), that’s fine. Shannon and Declan forgive you.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks / Google Play

EXCERPT:

Shannon

Let’s do an inventory of this fine day. My day-after-I-got-married day. In Vegas.

After fleeing my Momzilla mother.

Today is supposed be Day One of my honeymoon after marrying the billionaire of my dreams.

(Let’s not count the night before).

Woke up to the lovely sight of my husband’s tousled dark hair sliding down my torso so he could feast on me for breakfast.

Had actual breakfast in bed after room service delivered mixed berries, cream, bacon, and maple-soaked carrot-cake french toast, and the best damn coffee on the planet from the coffee chain I now own.

Made love with my delightful husband in the giant jetted bathtub in our suite. Turns out I’m as bendy as a Cirque du Soleil performer when I need to be. Maybe Mom’s insistence that I attend all those yoga classes she teaches has a silver lining after all.

Dressed and prepared to hop the corporate jet for Hawaii, kisses interspersed between readying ourselves for the trip. Undressed twice. Dressed twice. Declan insisted I not wear panties for the plane trip.

“But I’m already a member of the Mile High Club,” I’d protested.

“Not as a wife.”

He had a point.

Panties abandoned.

Found his brother, my best friend, a former colleague and an Anterdec chauffeur all married to each other.

Notice something a little different about that last one?

Yeah. Me too.

Day One of my honeymoon had promise, but now? Now it’s a little too real.

We’re on the plane, settling into our seats, and I’m doing my best not to think about my poor best friend and her chaotic mess back at the Anterdec resort where Declan and I just spent nearly a week trying to figure out our entire life.

Which we did, successfully, to my utter surprise. After fleeing our wedding in a helicopter and lying to my Momzilla mother, we managed to get to Las Vegas, ensconced in a resort on the Vegas Strip that Declan had designed himself as an intern in college. By the time my crazy family caught up to us, we’d steeled ourselves for the inevitable fallout.

And got so much more than we expected, in more ways than one. We’re married now. Husband and wife.

That’s really all that matters.

That, and honeymoon sex.

Lots and lots and lots of honeymoon sex. It’s my wifely right to walk funny for the next few days.

And his husbandly duty to make it so.

Q&A with Brooke Stanton

Tell us a little about yourself.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I used to keep notebooks filled with short stories starting in middle school. If I’m going to be completely honest they were filled with some pretty risqué stories. I was young and didn’t know much about romance or sex, but my aunt wrote romance novels and I used to sneak and read them, so I tried to emulate her. I didn’t really understand the subject matter. I don’t think I’d even kissed a boy, yet. Once I got to high school, I wrote more mainstream fiction in my spiral notebooks. They were never for anyone to see. Just my own enjoyment. I went to a performing arts high school and funnelled my creativity on stage at the time. But I always knew one day I would publish a book.

Why do you write?

I write for the same reason I used to get on stage and sing and act. It’s cathartic. I love diving into different stories and characters. It makes me feel alive.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

To have the freedom to write what I want in many different genres. I hope my readers love my books as much as I love writing them.

What has been the hardest part of building your career?

Being patient!

Which writers inspire you?

Jojo Moyes, Emily Giffin, Meg Cabot. All their stories and characters are interesting and unique and I love how their stories unfold. The love stories feel authentic and there’s always a bit of fun and laughter.

What have you written? (Include books, novellas, short stories, poems, blogs, awards or anything of interest).

My debut novel was the award-winning RomCom, The Misadventures of Catie Bloom. My follow-up novel is The Advenutres of Natalie Bloom, which is the second book in the Bloom Sisters series (but can be read as a stand-alone). I have a blog on my website that focuses on my writing career with day-to-day life anecdotes. When I was trying to get preggers, I had a humor blog called Vagina Vacancy. I also contributed to Natural Awakenings magazine and wrote a column for examiner.com.

What inspires your ideas?

Everything! No, really. I never know when an idea is going to hit; I could be on a plane, in a car, watching a movie, reading the newspaper, about to fall asleep. My phone is filled with notes of story ideas. I have at least a dozen. And they will all be written.

Are there any correlations between the books you write and your life experiences?

The Adventures of Natalie Bloom was largely inspired by my yearly trips to Red Frog Beach in Panama. My parents own a place there and it’s a beautiful, unique, inspiring location. The wheels in my head were turning every time I went down there and out of that came this book.

My novel, How to Survive New York on Three Dates a Week (co-written by Corinne Barlow), is the most biographical. Most of the stories are pulled right from our lives. It’s scheduled to be released in early 2018.

All my books have a few anecdotes I took either directly from my life or my friends. If you know me, read carefully…you may find a bit of your life staring back at you!

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you prefer just to see where an idea takes you?

I used to write and see where the story took me. But I found writing for discovery without any kind of outline takes too long. Now I write a short outline before I write any book. It has done wonders for the speed in which I can write a book now. And there’s still a lot to discover, even with an outline.

Tell me about your most recent release.

It’s a romantic adventure about discovering what you and what you’ll do (and won’t do) to get. It’s a bit of romance, adventure, and mystery all tied together. Natalie Bloom discovers to get what she wants she has to fight for it and not be afraid to get hurt…a hard thing to do for all of us.

Is there a message in your novel that you hope readers will grasp? I don’t focus on a message as much as I focus on giving my readers something to indulge in, like sneaking a pint of rocky road ice cream and savouring every morsel as it slides down. But the most prominent theme in Natalie Bloom is not letting fear get in the way of living your life – stand up for what you want and go out and get it, no matter what the obstacles.

Any new projects we should look out for?

The third and final book in the series, The Downfall of Catie Bloom, is coming out in the summer of 2017.

Drawing on newspaper accounts, private correspondence, historical documents, and cookbooks, Thanksgiving brings to life the full history of the holiday and what it has meant to generations of Americans.

Many famous figures walk these pages—Washington, who proclaimed our first Thanksgiving as a nation amid controversy about his Constitutional power to do so; Lincoln, who wanted to heal a divided nation sick of war when he called for all Americans—North and South—to mark a Thanksgiving Day; FDR, who set off a debate on state’s rights when he changed the traditional date of Thanksgiving.

Ordinary Americans also play key roles in the Thanksgiving story—the New England Indians who boycott Thanksgiving as a Day of Mourning; Sarah Josepha Hale, the nineteenth-century editor and feminist who successfully campaigned for Thanksgiving to be a national holiday; the 92nd Street Y in New York City, which founded Giving Tuesday, an online charity established in the long tradition of Thanksgiving generosity. Kirkpatrick also examines the history of Thanksgiving football and, of course, Thanksgiving dinner.

While the rites and rituals of the holiday have evolved over the centuries, its essence remains the same: family and friends feasting together in a spirit of gratitude to God, neighborliness, and hospitality. Thanksgiving is Americans’ oldest tradition. Kirkpatrick’s enlightening exploration offers a fascinating look at the meaning of the holiday that we gather together to celebrate on the fourth Thursday of November.

Unexpected Holiday Bonus by Merry Holly

CEO Suzette LeBlec has a problem. Well, two actually. She needs a top-notch temporary replacement for her administrative assistant’s maternity leave, and she needs to find a way to outmaneuver a hostile takeover attempt by Mark Adams. To make things worse, it’s almost Christmas, the time when Suzette most feels alone in the world. Too bad that handsome man at the party got away. But when the same stranger applies for the temp job, his almost-too-good-to-be-true credentials set off Suzette’s alarms.

Dirk Harvey worked hard for years to remain anonymous while he built his father’s floundering company back up to its glory days. But when he discovers the stunning woman he’d spotted at a party is hiring, he decides to go undercover as “Dirk Mulligan”, administrative assistant extraordinaire. Besides, he and Suzette have a common problem: takeover King Mark Adams. Maybe they can find a solution together plus a little holiday bonus as well.

Excerpt:

Chapter Three

“You know you won’t last a week there?” said his irritated admin, Catherine Sullivan. But she didn’t stop there. “This has to be the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard from you. Why didn’t you just introduce yourself?”

Dirk shrugged. He knew Cathy’s annoyance stemmed from the fact that he’d ignored all her passes through the years. If she wasn’t such a great admin, he would have let her go for her poor attitude. Pretty in an efficient way, always put together in her five-hundred-dollar suits, but too bossy. Nope, she wasn’t his type. But Suzette just might be. He was sure she’d be bossy, her suits probably cost thousands, and she also seemed organized. Maybe it was the power she exuded. Mmm. Sexy Suzette was different. The minute their eyes locked he’d felt it deep down. He’d wager his company on it. If Ms. LeBlec heard him call her Sexy Suzette he’d also bet she’d take him apart piece by piece. Oh yes, he definitely wanted to know what made her tick.

“Dirk, we have pending deals with strict deadlines that require your time and attention before the end of year. How will you handle your own business? Plus, Ms. LeBlec can accuse you of corporate spying if you’re caught.”

“We’re in different industries, Cathy. Stop worrying. I’ll check in with you before work, lunch and afterward. I’ll do my paperwork in the evenings. Nothing’s going to slip.”

“But…”

“Cathy, it’s my business.”

“I’m well aware of that. I’m just trying to save you from yourself.”

“Thanks, but I’ll be fine.”

His cell phone rang. Smiling, he put his finger to his lips to shut down Cathy’s prattle. “This is Dirk.”

“Mr. Mulligan, this is Mrs. Holmes from Sherman Industries. We received your résumé today. I’d like to schedule an appointment now for testing, and an interview with Ms. LeBlec. Are you available today at five?”

“That’s kind of short notice.”

“It is, but we’re ready to make a decision. Your qualifications are impeccable. We’d be remiss if we didn’t at least interview you.”

His afternoon flew by and before he knew it it was a quarter to five. If he didn’t hurry he’d be late for the interview. Call him crazy, but his nerves fluttered in his belly. He had never had to interview for a job before. Could he pull this off? And if he did, what would that get him? Would Sexy Suzette be flattered he’d gone through all this trouble just to meet her? Or would she consider him some nut and toss him out on his ass?

The revolving doors at 100 Park Place spit out people, like a drunk on New Year’s Eve giving back everything he’d eaten and drunk that night. Going against the flow, he made his way to the information desk, gave the guard his name, and waited for someone to escort him to the eighty-ninth floor. The building only had ninety floors. The revolving restaurant on the top floor, the Skyview, had fed him on many an occasion.

It didn’t take long. A young-looking guard beckoned him to a pillar of elevators. The guard slid his key card into the slot. When the door opened the guard stepped in with him. Personalized service. I guess no one gets onto eight-nine without a key or escort. Or maybe it’s just because it’s after hours.

He approved of the décor as he stepped off the elevator, bidding good-bye to the guard. The designer had shown good taste in their choice of fabric and color. Dirk wondered if Suzette had had a hand in the decorating, probably not. Silk wallpaper in soft muted colors of mauve, spring green and pale blue absorbed the noise, along with the blue carpet thick under his feet. At the end of the hall, before massive carved wooden double doors, sat a single mahogany desk equipped with electronics and three phones.

He knocked. Waited. And then knocked again. After what seemed like hours though was really only seconds, he pulled open the doors and walked into another office. The desk console looked like a command center. Ms. LeBlec must be a busy woman if she needed more than one admin. At the second set of double carved wooden doors he knocked. The response was immediate.

“Come in.”

You could have knocked her over with a feather. Standing in front of her was her tuxedo man from the party. And he looked just as delicious in a suit as he did in a tux. Mmmm, I wonder how he’d look out of it. His being an executive admin didn’t fit her image of him. At the party he had screamed wealth, aloofness, and power. Standing, she extended her hand.

“I’m Suzette LeBlec.”

“I’m Dirk Mulligan. Thank you for seeing me, Ms. LeBlec.”

A deep husky voice caressed her ears as his direct gaze mesmerized her, begging her to reveal her innermost secrets. Control yourself, Suzette. Taking a deep breath, she dug her nails into the palm of her left hand to keep focused. Good thing she didn’t have to go up against him in a deal. She’d worry about her abilities to concentrate and win.

Ukulele Murder by @LeslieLangtry is Simply a Must-Read! #romcom #mystery #giveaway

UkuleleMurder

Title:  Ukulele Murder ( A Nani Johnson Mystery) Aloha Lagoon Mysteries book #1

Author: Leslie Langtry

Genre:  Comedy/Mystery with Romantic Elements

Publisher: Gemma Halliday Publishing

Book Blurb:

Nani Johnson thought she had it made when she moved from Kansas to the resort town of Aloha Lagoon, Kauai. In spite of her certifiably crazy mom, Nani is determined that nothing will stop her from becoming a ukulele virtuoso! Unfortunately her Julliard training doesn’t help her break into the local music scene due to some heavy competition from the Terrible Trio—three hostile, local musicians. The only work she finds is a few bar mitzvahs and gigs at the kitschy Blue Hawaii Wedding Chapel.

But when one of Nani’s competitors drops dead right after a public feud, Nani becomes the police’s main suspect. A missing murder weapon, mysterious threats, and a heck of a frame-up job all have Nani worrying she’ll be trading in her flowery muumuus for prison orange. Enter hunky local botanist Nick Woodfield, who just might be able to help her clear her name…that is if he doesn’t have secrets of his own. With the bodies stacking up, the danger closing in, and the authorities circling, Nani must track down a killer…before she ends up the latest victim of the Ukulele Murderer!

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

If anyone requests “Ukulele Lady,” I’m out of here. I’m not going to do it. Not again. Not for the millionth time. Is that the only song tourists know? Yeesh. Please, tiki god of the Ukulele, don’t let me kill a tourist today.

“‘Ukulele Lady!'” a dumpy, middle-aged man in a Frankie Goes to Hollywood T-shirt screams. He gives me a knowing nod with his balding head to indicate he’s the only one in the room who knows true Hawaiian culture.

I hate him. I imagine bludgeoning him with my koa wood uke.

But I don’t. Do you know how hard it is to get blood out of koa wood? Well…I don’t know either, but I’d guess it isn’t easy.

Instead, I play the damn song—smiling as I imagine shoving his pineapple drink up his…

The crowd cheers as I perform. I know—it’s not so bad having an adoring audience. But this isn’t the audience I want. This is Judah Horowitz’s bar mitzvah. One of the few gigs I could get in Aloha Lagoon.

My name is Hoalohanani Johnson. My mother, Harriet Jones Johnson, is a bit of a Hawaiian-obsessed nut. It’s so bad that it’s to the point where she believes she is the reincarnation of a Hawaiian princess and says that my name came from a dream from an ancestor god. In reality, it probably came from the bottom of a rum bottle.

To her endless annoyance, my redheaded, green-eyed mom comes from a long line of English ancestors and grew up in Kansas. Dad was a third-generation blond, brown-eyed German whose name was shortened to Johnson due to the inability to pronounce whatever the name really was. Neither of my parents had ever been to Hawaii until Mom and I moved here after Dad died.

I go by Nani. And I now live in Aloha Lagoon on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, with my mother, who now calls herself Haliaka and dyes her hair and eyebrows a ridiculous shade of black that does not look natural. I’ve never understood where my dark-brown hair comes from, but I look more native than she does. Always dressed in a muumuu, Mom wears hibiscus flowers in her hair and hangs out on my lanai, singing island songs all day and night, much to my neighbors’ dismay. Sigh.

I finish my set, tell the crowd “aloha,” and am cut off by the DJ who decides suddenly to play a gangsta rap song.

“Thank you!” Gladys Horowitz of Trenton, New Jersey, and Judah’s mother, slips an envelope into my hands before running to the dance floor to shimmy disturbingly. Thirteen-year-old Judah hangs his head in shame.

I make my way through the crowd to the bar and order a decidedly un-Hawaiian vodka tonic.

“Here’s the ten bucks I owe you.” The bartender smiles, handing me money.

I gulp my drink, slapping an empty glass on the bar. “I told you, someone requests it every time.” I take his money and head to my car. My shift in hell is over.

Title: Bring Your Own Baker

Book Series: Death by Cupcake, Book 2

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Humor, Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

Anna just wants to earn enough money on the side to buy into the bakery, Callie’s Cakes, where she works together with her best nerd pal Callie. The last thing she expects to see when she walks into Arthur’s apartment to do some moonlighting is a blood bath. Callie’s ready to jump into the investigation into Arthur’s murder, and she’s bringing another bakery worker, Kristie, into their hijinks whether Kristie wants to or not. But things aren’t as they seem. There are gang affiliations, illegal gambling dens, and ladies of the night to wade through. Will Anna and Callie discover who murdered Arthur or will Callie’s detective boyfriend and Anna’s self-appointed protector put a stop to such aspirations?

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu, but make sure to bring your own baker, because Anna’s a bit preoccupied at the moment.

Warning: This is NOT your mom’s cozy mystery. Bring Your Own Baker may be a ‘clean’ read, but if gangs, illegal gambling, and pimps make you turn your nose up at your e-reader, you might want to skip this one. Although you’ll be missing some sizzling chemistry between Anna and her protector. Not to mention a whole bunch of witty dialogue.

My Review:

Looking for a sassy cozy mystery with a healthy dose of swoon-worthy moments? This is it!

Anna, the pixie sidekick of Callie (Death by Cupcake, book 1), wants to buy into Callie’s Cakes and she’s almost made enough money moonlighting as an accountant for her buddy, Arthur. But before you can say buttercream frosting, Anna walks into Arthur’s brutal murder. So. Much. Blood. The goofy, inept police detectives suspect her (of course they do) for the crime. Are they serious? Anna is a pixie in every way from her five-foot frame to her pink hair. There’s no way she did it but little does she know, she’s in more danger than she could ever possibly imagine.

Cue bad-boy music…

A tall, dark stranger breaks into Anna’s apartment, only he’s there to protect her. He’s got the tats of one of the most ruthless gangs, Angel Band, and Anna’s blood pressure just spiked higher than her crème brulee blow torch. She doesn’t know what to make of him but she can’t deny the way he makes me melt like chocolate ganache.

Anna needs to find Arthur’s murderer and she enlists the help of Callie, Kristie and even Ben (Callie’s boyfriend). The more they dig, the more they discover nerdy Arthur is not who he appears again. Then there’s the way Anna’s protector swoops in to rescue her at just the right moment. Can Anna find justice for Arthur or will she back herself into a corner she can’t talk her way out of.

A brilliant cozy mystery slash romantic comedy by Haggerty! Anna comes alive off the page and I found myself laughing at her antics. Then there’s her bad-boy protector. I swooned more than once and sparks fly between him and Anna. The plot moves at a super-fast pace, I was able to keep up with all that’s going on.

I can’t wait for more! Bring Your Own Baker has everything you love in a cozy mystery: witty dialogue, overly excited amateur detectives (Callie and Anna), baking, romance, great one-liners and a murder to solve. Did I mention baking? There’s even a fantastic recipe after the epilogue. This is a must-read!

Favorite Character:

Anna. She’s my alter-ego, I swear. Hot on a trail of her friend’s killer, she stands up to gangsters, pimps and a den of catty prostitutes. She may be a pixie but she’s got guts the size of the Grand Canyon. Oh, and I adored the way she compares her yummy bad-boy protector to various baker items (chocolate ganache, frosting, whipped cream, crème brulee, etc.). I’d love to see her in another book. I loved her POV!

Favorite Quote:

Logan’s grin is wicked. “I always thought Tinker Bell was hot.”

I huff. “Tinker Bell’s a fairy, not a pixie.”

My Rating:  5+ stars

College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Excerpt:

“Apparently, I’m smart and could take over Arthur’s ‘position’. Oh, and I’m beautiful.” I snort again because really? The bookie must be in dire need of someone to play poker for him if he’s calling me beautiful.

“You are beautiful,” Logan whispers. Before I can snort again, he places a hand over my nose and mouth. “Baby, how can you not know you’re beautiful?”

My eyes widen at his question. “You’re serious?” At his nod, I continue. “Because I’m a pink-haired pixie. No one thinks a pixie’s beautiful.”

Logan’s grin is wicked. “I always thought Tinker Bell was hot.”

I huff. “Tinker Bell’s a fairy, not a pixie.”

“Pixie, fairy, whatever.” He shrugs. “Hot,” he mumbles as his lips find mine. He wastes no time in sticking his tongue down my throat but then abruptly stops. He licks his lips. “Have you been drinking?”

“Vodka.” I nod.

“Vodka doesn’t taste like coconut.”

“It does if it comes out of my freezer,” I tell him with no uncertainty.

He rolls his eyes at me. “You’re a nut.”

“Technically coconut is a fruit, not a nut,” I clarify.

Chasing Charlie: A Romantic Comedy (The Texas Two-Step Series Book 1) by Kathy Carmichael

The Texas Two-Step romantic comedy series is a reader favorite. All of the stories in the series are sweet, charming and emotional contemporary romance. Each story in the series stands alone, but all Texas Two-Step novels and novellas feature love stories about members of the Nelson, Murphy or Palmer families — and sometimes, more than one!

Book Description:

Raised in a family of rodeo champions on a South Texas cattle ranch, Charlie wants only one thing: to avoid thrill-seeking cowboys.

Davis Murphy, cowboy wannabe and one of Dallas’s most eligible bachelors, needs a pretty and witty faux fiancée so his widowed mother will marry her longtime gentleman friend. Charlie, his local librarian, seems the prefect choice.

Charlie’s first reaction is to run, but she’s promised herself to step out of her plain-jane routine. When Charlie accepts, Davis’s plan is set. But now Charlie’s sweet ways are challenging his bachelor heart.

Chasing Charlie is the first sweet romance in the Texas Two-Step contemporary romance series from USA Today bestselling author Kathy Carmichael.

✦ ✦ — SYNOPSIS — ✦ ✦

Go BACK TO BOOKMAN with USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Dakota Madison’s new #LoveinMidlife #ComingofMiddleAge romantic comedy series.

Tenured English professor Bly Daniels believes the short walk from her campus office to the university library is too much exposure to the harsh elements of the outdoors. She would prefer to spend her days (and nights) comfortably seated indoors reading classic literature.

When Bly is arrested for reading one of the great books while driving home, a judge sentences her to thirty days of community service with The Wild Way, a therapeutic wilderness program for troubled teens.

There she meets Turner Wild, the owner and operate of the wilderness program. Turner is everything Bly despises: rugged, unrefined and outdoorsy. For Bly a trip to hell sounds more desirable than spending an entire month with Turner and his band of hooligans as they traverse the woods of rural northwest New Jersey communing with nature.

Bly certainly never expects to form a bond with the troubled teens she’s been assigned to mentor and forge an unlikely relationship with their fearless leader, Turner Wild.

Each full-length novel in Dakota Madison’s LOVE IN MIDLIFE romantic comedy series can be read as a stand-alone or as part of the series. Each story features one of the graduates of Bookman College attending their 25th reunion.

— EXCERPT —

“This is as far as I go,” the crusty old cab driver barks as he stops in front of a long dirt road that disappears into the woods.

“How far is it to the wilderness camp?” I ask.

“Pretty far, I would imagine. It’s not visible from the road at all.”

“And how am I supposed to get there?”

“I guess you’re just going to have to walk.”

I laugh until I realize he’s not joking. He expects me to walk into the woods on a dirt road that is God knows how long.

Then I realize I’ll also have to carry my bag as well. I could barely carry my suitcase to the front stoop for him to place in his truck.

“I can only take the cab on paved roads,” he tells me. “Company rules.”

Is that supposed to make me feel better? It doesn’t.

I heave a huge sigh. “How much do I owe you?”

“Thirty.”

I hand him three ten dollar bills, plus a five dollar tip.

“Let me get your bag out of the trunk.”

When he exits the cab I take a moment to compose myself. I’m already so far out of my comfort zone I feel like I’m having a panic attack, and I haven’t even made it to the camp yet.

You’re an intelligent woman with a doctoral degree, I remind myself. You can do this.

By the time I exit the cab my bag is already on the side of the road waiting for me.

“Good luck,” the cab driver says.

“Thanks.”

It probably wasn’t the smartest idea I ever had to wear a dress and pumps. In my defense I don’t have much else in my wardrobe. Work attire and lounging outfits for around the house are about it. When I teach I always wear a dress or a suit with dress shoes. I wouldn’t be caught dead outside of my home in one of my lounging outfits.

Calling the dirt pathway a road is extremely generous. The trail is much rockier and uneven than I initially thought. The shoes I’m wearing are not even close to being appropriate for the conditions. I’ll be lucky if I don’t turn an ankle.

My suitcase is another problem entirely. I can barely make it a few feet before I have to set it down. The muscles in my arms are already throbbing and I haven’t even made it far enough to spot the end of the trail yet.

Luckily it’s still early in the day. I’ve got many hours of sunlight left. Even if it takes me several hours walking a few steps at a time I should make it there before dark.

Unless it’s a few miles to the camp, then I’ll be in a bit of trouble.

Two hours and thirty seven minutes later I’ve had about all that I can take. My feet are blistered and aching. I’m afraid when I finally remove my shoes my feet will be bloody as well.

My arms are so weak I don’t think I can lift the suitcase again.

And I’m on the verge of complete exhaustion.

What was I thinking packing so much stuff? I was thinking I’ll be here an entire month and I need reading materials.

Here is no water but only rock

Rock and no water and the sandy road.

Those words from T.S. Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’ seem appropriate right now. I take a seat on my suitcase and wipe the sweat from my brow with a tissue that I just happened to have shoved in my pocket. I can’t even remember the last time I sweated. It may have been in high school when we were forced to play those utterly horrendous sports in our Physical Education classes.

I was supposed to be at the apex of my career this year. I was finally promoted from Associate to Full Professor. Edgar had been hinting that when he retired I was first in line to take over as Chairperson of the English Department. I was just a few months away from paying off the mortgage on my house.

Now it looks like I might lose everything, and I’m sitting in the middle of the woods helpless to do anything about it. Edgar was not happy when I told him I needed to take a month of personal leave and he’d need to find a substitute to teach my classes. That coupled with the fact that my arrest and conviction has tarnished the reputation of the institution does not bode well for me still having a career upon my return from this journey into the wilderness.

The sun is starting to get higher overhead, and it’s beating down on me. I’m not sure how much of the blistering brightness my pale skin can take. I should probably edge closer to the tree line where it’s shaded, but I’m too exhausted to move.

I’m just about to fall asleep seated on my suitcase when a large pickup truck whizzes by. I try to raise a hand to wave the driver over, but to no avail. My arm won’t lift high enough.

Instead I choke on the dust left in the truck’s wake.

Then to my surprise the trucks comes to a screeching halt, reverses and heads back towards me.

When I rise to greet the driver my legs feel like cooked noodles. They’re so weak I can barely control them as I move towards the truck.

My eyes go wide when I see who has hopped out of the vehicle. The driver is a young, petite woman of Asian descent.

From the neck up she’s beautiful, with long silky dark hair and perfect features. From the neck down she’s dressed like a man. She’s wearing well-worn jeans, black combat boots and a green Army jacket.

“Are you lost?” Her tone is accusatory, definitely not friendly.

I shake my head.

“You know this road leads to a wilderness camp for troubled teens.”

“I do.”

She looks me up and down. “You don’t look like you’re ready for the wilderness, and you’re definitely not a teenager.”

“I’m aware of that.” My voice is weary. “I’m court ordered to be here. Community service.”

She rolls her eyes. “Lucky us.”

“Unfortunately the cab driver wouldn’t take me beyond the main road. I’ve been walking for hours.”

“Would you like a lift?” She raises an eyebrow.

“That would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.”

She lets down the tailgate of the pickup, presumably for me to place my luggage in the empty truck bed.

I do my best to drag the suitcase over to the truck, but I feel like my muscles are on fire. There is no way I’m going to be able to lift the suitcase into the back of the vehicle.

The woman and I both stare at the suitcase for several moments.

“You can’t lift it, can you?” she asks finally.

I shake my head.

“Unbelievable.” She grabs the suitcase like it’s no heavier than a rag doll and tosses it into the back of her truck. Then she slams the tailgate of the truck closed.

She glares at me for several seconds. “I have some advice for you. Never pack more than you can carry.”

Before I have a chance to respond she marches over to the driver’s side of the truck and hops in.

I hurry over to the passenger side of the vehicle and stare at it for a few moments. I’m five feet seven inches tall. The woman is easily five inches shorter than me and she got into the truck with very little effort. I have no idea how I’m going to climb into this thing, particularly in my dress and heels.

“Are you coming?” She glares at me again. She’s very good at glaring. Despite her small stature she’s quite intimidating.

“If you’ll give me just a few seconds I need to figure out how to get inside of this truck.”

“Oh, for God’s sake.”

She jumps back out of the vehicle, makes her way around to my side then gives me an extremely hard shove right on my buttocks which propels me enough that I’m able to climb into the seat.

She stomps back over to her side of the truck, leaps into her seat with the ease of a rabbit then slams her door shut.

“Your truck is very high off the ground,” I observe.

“No shit, Sherlock. Now fasten your seatbelt.”

The woman doesn’t say another word to me as we head down the dusty road toward the camp.

Thankfully she parks extremely close to what appears to be a main building. It has a placard which says: The Wild Way Administration.

I do my best to hop out of the truck in my heels. The woman opens the back of the truck, hoists my suitcase out of the truck bed and tosses it on the ground.

She doesn’t wait for me to say anything, not even a thank you. She marches back over to the driver’s side, leaps into the truck like a frog, and drives somewhere behind the administration building.

I’m not sure what to do. I don’t feel like dealing with my suitcase so I just leave it where the woman tossed it. There’s not another soul anywhere so I don’t think it’s in danger of being stolen. Not that my clothing and books would be of value to anyone but me.

I walk up the small set of stairs to the administration office. The building is really just a large cabin, much like all of the other smaller cabins scattered about the heavily wooded property.

Unfortunately the front door is locked. I try knocking, then pounding, but to no avail. The place appears to be deserted.

The person with whom I spoke on the phone, Turner Wild, the program director, told me specifically to report to the camp today. I even wrote it down. He was very short with me, much the way the Asian American woman was, so I wasn’t able to get him to commit to a specific time.

My feet are throbbing. I’m not that motivated to walk over to any of the other cabins, which are a significant distance from this one, several hundred yards at least.

The small porch that I’m standing on doesn’t have any chairs, or seats of any kind, so I guess I’m stuck standing here for a while until someone appears, or I figure out something else to do.

I wait for what feels like an hour, but when I glance at my watch I realize only twenty minutes have actually gone by. Time seems to pass very slowly when I don’t have my nose firmly planted in a book.

That’s when I hear rustling on the roof of the administration building. Panic begins to set in when some tree debris fly off the roof and nearly hit me.

What’s up there? Is it some kind of animal?

Then I hear stomping—loud, heavy stomping—right above me. Is it possible for a bear to climb on a rooftop?

My chest tightens and I feel like I can’t breathe. I’m going to get killed by a bear and I haven’t even started working here yet.

More tree debris rain down on me: branches, bark, pine cones.

What is going on up there?

Then I hear hammering. To my knowledge bears don’t know how to use hammers. Is Turner Wild on the roof? Or maybe the woman who gave me a lift in her truck?

“Hello?” I shout when the hammering stops. “Hello?”

“You made it,” a male voice shouts back.

I nearly jump out of my shoes when the guy, presumably Turner Wild, jumps down from the roof and lands on the porch next to me.

“Community service?” He places his hammer on the porch rail next to him and wipes his dirty hands on the sides of his jeans.

“That’s what I’m here for.”

The man is different than how I pictured him from our very brief phone conversation. I thought he’d be a lot younger, maybe late twenties or early thirties, but he looks more like he’s my age, mid-to-late forties.

That’s not to say there isn’t a youthful air about him.

Everything about this man is rugged and outdoorsy. His brown hair is cut in a short, military-style haircut. His strong features look a bit rough and weatherworn. His dark jeans and t-shirt are tight fitting and display every one of the large muscles on his exceptionally masculine body.

And he’s wearing a very large knife hanging from his belt.  I’m not surprised he runs a wilderness camp. It would be difficult to imagine someone who looks the way he does doing anything else.

Well, maybe serving in those Special Operations Forces in the military. I could picture him in one of those SEAL teams like the one that killed Bin Laden.

I decide there are only two likely vocations for this man: killing bears or killing Bin Laden.

His sea green eyes are like lasers as he stares at me. I’m immediately uncomfortable. I wonder if there is any way I could contact the judge and tell her I’ve changed my mind. Fifteen months in jail is starting to seem much more desirable than a month in the woods with this frightening character.

I extend a hand because I’m not sure what else to do. “Hello, I’m Dr. Daniels.”

He stares at my limb like I’m a leper. Then he looks me up and down. “What kind of doctor are you?”

I clear my throat. “I’m an English professor.”

He laughs. “So you’re not a real doctor.”

I immediately bristle at his ignorant comment. I hate when people say that. “For your information the word doctor is derived from the Latin word docēre which means to teach. The title Doctor has been used for centuries in Europe as a designation for someone who has obtained a research doctorate such as a Ph.D. Thus a person with a medical degree is more accurately described as a physician, not a doctor.”

He pats my shoulder in the most condescending way imaginable, like I’m some kind of pet. “Whatever you say, Doc.”

“Why are you touching me?” His hand is still on my arm. I can feel the heat from his body move through mine. It’s extremely disconcerting.

“Sorry.” He stares at me for a long moment before he removes his hand.

I try to brush away the tingly feeling flowing down my limb. “Why did you call me Doc? This isn’t a cartoon. You’re not Bugs Bunny.”

He laughs again. I don’t like people who laugh so easily. I’m immediately suspicious of them.

“I’m serious,” I tell him. “There’s no reason to laugh.”

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re wound up tighter than Dick’s hatband?”

I glare at him. Does that expression even make sense? I have no idea what he means, but it feels like an insult. And he’s smirking, which makes it worse.

He looks me up and down. “You can’t wear that.”

“Why not?”

“This is a wilderness camp, Doc. We’ll be getting down and dirty. Living in the woods. You can’t wear a dress and heels.”

“I’d appreciate it if you called me something other than Doc. Dr. Daniels would be fine. Or Ms. Daniels. Or my first name, Bly, if you insist. Just not Doc.”

“I could call you Community Service. Would that be better?”

I shake my head.

“That’s what I thought. What about the clothes, Doc?”

Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker by @DenaEHaggerty is a 5+ Star Gem #bookreview #books

NTaSCB

Title: Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker (Death by Cupcake Book 1)

Author: D.E. Haggerty

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

A mystery with a heap of laughs, a generous portion of romance, and just a smidgeon of suspense.

Callie’s life is rather awesome. She owns a successful bakery and teaches German literature at the local university. There’s just one tiny problem. She has no self-confidence when it comes to her body. And then there’s the little matter of her being accused of murdering her pole dancing instructor. There’s no way Callie’s going to risk losing her teaching position and thus she embarks, with her best baker bud Anna, on a journey to discover the real killer. Between stripper auditions and a detective who insists Callie is the woman of his dreams, it’s a roller coaster adventure. Cupcakes not included.

My Review: D. E. Haggerty is back with a brand new cozy mystery series and she had me with her title. I mean, what woman wouldn’t read a book titled, Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker?

Callie is the best thing since Bridget Jones. She’s a cupcake baker/bakery owner by day and a part time German literature professor in her spare time. She runs the bakery with her best friend, Anna, and tries not to drool every time Detective Hottie (Ben) asks her out. See, Callie doesn’t believe Ben when he says she’s the woman of his dreams because she has trouble seeing her body in a healthy way (totally can relate).

Anna, in her role as pixie best friend, enrolls the two of them for pole-dancing classes. Callie agrees (like she has a choice) but when the pole-dancing instructor is a catty b*tch, Callie complains to the gym’s manager. Everyone in the class hears about it and when the pole-dancing instructor is found poisoned by a cupcake, guess who’s the prime suspect?

Ben convinces Callie to go on a date and even though she doesn’t believe him, he treats her like a queen. He’s head-over-heels in love with Callie and proves it even more when she’s accused of murder. Will Callie see herself the way Ben sees her? Will she be cleared of murder (with the help of Anna and Ben) or will she be next on the murderer’s list?

I loved this book and I highly recommend it! I laughed, swooned, gasped and was totally taken in by the story. I cheered when Callie and Ben kissed for the first time and the antics of Anna made me laugh out loud. I mean, trying to trap a murderer by attending the funeral of the one you’re accused of killing? Haggerty has a talent for comedic timing and I’m a devout fan!

I swooned over Ben and his patience with Callie. He’s a sexy cop who’s totally in love with a curvy woman who doesn’t realize how damn sexy she is. He helps her in so many ways and he’s sweeter than a German chocolate cupcake.

The best part, though, was I didn’t know who the murderer was until it was revealed to me. Well done, Haggerty.

If you love romantic comedy with dashes of mystery and suspense, you have to read this book! I can’t wait for a television or film producer to make this into a movie/show. You hear me, Hollywood? This is a gem!

Favorite Character: Callie, hands down. While I could relate to her on the whole body image thing, it was her humorous outlook on life and love that made me fall in love with her. I want to hang out with her and of course eat her cupcakes. Yummy!

Favorite Quote:

“I have no words. I stare at him until he motions for me to get my act together. Yeah, like that’s possible after Detective Hottie declares he wants to spend his nights with you.” ~Callie

Author Biography:

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.

Title: Temporarily Employed

Author: Vicki Batman

Genre: Romantic Comedy Mystery

Book Blurb:

New Job. New Love. And Murder.

Hattie Cook’s dream job is down the toilet and her new SUV violated. Desperate for cash to cover the basic necessities , she takes a temporary job where she uncovers an embezzling scam tied to the death of a former employee–the very one she replaced.

When the police determine there’s more to the death of a former Buy Rite employee, Detective Allan Charles Wellborn steps in to lead the investigation. Overly dedicated, always perfect, he puts his job first, even if doing so ultimately hurts the one he loves.

Can the killer be found before Hattie’s time is up?

Excerpt:

“Yuck.”

Pretty much covered the whole freakin’ day.

A blinding red-white, red-white strobe, reflected in my brand new Wrangler’s rearview mirror, seized my attention. The police. I tossed my hands skyward, ready to surrender. I shouldn’t have been too surprised. Like I’d commented this a.m. to my roommate, Jenny, “Today, anything’s possible.”

My Bad Day checklist included:

  • Crappy job interview, one which might have provided desperately needed income.

  • Wore gut-busting panty hose on a hot day which had now worked past my waist and strangled my diaphragm.

  • A barely blowing air conditioner indicated something had malfunctioned in my new, fun car.

I stole another glance in the mirror, and with great reluctance, flipped the right turn indicator. My vehicle coasted to a stop on the shoulder of Boston Avenue in my hometown of Sommerville, a nice suburb located between two large cities. Four lanes of cars and trucks zipped by as I sat there where every single one of my family, friends, friends’ friends, and their friends—including Rat Fink Suzanne—would see a police vehicle positioned right behind mine. Gleefully, drivers would chant the “Ha-ha, got you, not me” ditty.

How embarrassing.

After killing the engine, I flopped back in the seat. Shooting the morons the finger was an idea. NahI’m too exhausted to care.

A litany of:  “No, not hiring.” “Just filled the position.” “You’re over qualified.” “You’re under qualified…” tornadoed through my head. Coupled with the intense job search through various outlets like the internet and completing numerous online employment applications, no wonder my body had been depleted of all life force.

Not even a breeze blew to take the edge off the unbearable summertime heat. Tangled wild trees and dry scrubby bushes banked the roadside. The grass had taken on a scorched look. Rolling down the driver’s window, I surveyed my surroundings. Nothing great. Nothing new.

I stole a glance in the side mirror at the policeman who strode purposefully along the shoulder. The gravel crunched under his boots. He looked huge, probably because his uniform, which appeared to be bulked with a bullet-proof vest, made him resemble a buffed-up superhero in size. Exceedingly intimidating.

Sigh. When things went wrong, they were really wrong.

On Valentine’s Day, she sets a trap for the mysterious intruder, intent on ending his crime streak once and for all. But her scheming cat familiar foils her best-laid plans, and, with a little help from Madame Eve’s 1-Night Stand service, she discovers a far more dangerous species of magical feline.

After moving in next to a ramshackle building on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., pastry chef Adrien Chatdurois is plagued by repeat sexual fantasies starring the same curvy brunette. In a state of constant arousal, he devotes his early mornings to grueling exercise and spends the rest of his day handcrafting the city’s best chocolates. When his younger brother stirs up trouble on the shop’s busiest day, the frustrated shifter is forced to pay a surprise visit on his reclusive neighbor. He soon learns not all witches are wart-covered hags, and one in particular might prove the most delicious of desserts.

Excerpt:

Adrien finished slotting the tray of chocolate-dipped strawberries into the case’s most prominent spot. In honor of Valentine’s Day, he’d drawn a Cupid’s bow on each fruit using melted white chocolate. Beaming a proud smile at the appetizing array, he made a mental note to drop off any remainders on his next-door neighbor’s porch after closing time.

With the notion came a sudden compulsion to also send a bottle of bubbly. Rolling his shoulders to relieve the tension in his fatigued muscles, he tentatively added champagne to the shopping list. If today’s profits met expectations, he should be able to gift the old lady some booze.

Less than a second later, an image of a bottle of peach Schnapps flashed over his vision. Stepping to his left, he took off the wool hat and placed it next to the cash register. Why was his brain fixating on ingredients for a Bellini? He didn’t even like cocktails.

White heat flashed over his vision. He found himself on his knees, crouched over a soft feminine body. Fizzy, bubbly liquid slicked skin the color of caramel. When her back arched, the drink sluiced over a set of tensed, quivering abs to soak her lacy pink waistband. He dipped his head, his tongue trailing over the potent mixture of peach, alcohol, and woman. He dug his fingers into her lush hips, tilting her in the opposite direction so the remaining liquid trickled over her ribs to catch along the underwire of her bra. Capitalizing on the excuse to taste, he—

Fingers snapped repeatedly in front of his face. “Oy. Where the hell did you go?”

With a sigh, he directed his gaze at his sibling. “Bass, what the hell do you want?” Their two-year age gap allowed for a healthy dose of fraternal bonding, but a lifetime as the man’s big brother had also built up baseline cynicism. Sebastien’s unannounced visits tended to have odd and oftentimes very expensive consequences.

Molly’s Misadventures by @DenaEHaggerty #bookreview #RomanticComedy

Molly's Misadventures

Title: Molly’s Misadventures

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

I’m having the suckiest day ever. First, my father, aka Mr. Grumpy Pants, calls to say his nurse just walked out on him. Likely story. I rush home to pack, only to walk in on my husband getting it on with his younger, skanky secretary. Unfortunately, my quick weekend trip home to fix Dad’s problems turns into a stay of a few weeks. Luckily, I’ve got Danny, the neighbor boy I’ve had a crush on since I was a dorky, braces-wearing, nose-buried-in-a-book teenager, and a brand-spanking new blog to keep my mind off things. Before I know it, I’m writing product reviews of vibrators and getting questioned by a store rent-a-cop at the world’s worst date ever. All while trying to figure out how to take things with Danny to the next level. Not to complicate things or anything, but my boss decides to give me an ultimatum—come back in four weeks or don’t come back at all. How in the world did my life get so complicated?

mollys-misadventures_teaser-2

My Review:

I first discovered D. E. Haggerty when I read her Grey Haired Knitting Detectives cozy mysteries. When I found out she’d written a romantic comedy, I knew I would be in for a treat. What I didn’t know was that I would develop a side-ache from laughing so hard.

Molly’s having a bad day. She gets a call from her father in Florida telling her his nurse just up and left. But that’s nothing compared to walking in her front door to find her husband buck naked and screwing his skanky secretary. I love that word, skanky.

“It’s not what it looks like,” hubby wails.

Yeah, likely story. * rolls eyes *

Great beginning to a romantic comedy and I was hooked.

Molly flies down to Florida to a spend only a few days with her father but things get complicated real quick. Her dad is a horrific patient, and Molly’s running out of options.

But things perk up when she sees her high school crush (next door neighbor) Danny. Molly and Danny reacquaint themselves and sparks fly. He challenges her to start writing and before she can say no, her girlfriend starts a blog (on her behalf). Things move quickly and Molly must decide if she can put on her big girl panties and take the leap (in both love and life) or will she be too scared?

This romantic comedy is hysterical from start to finish and there were so many times when I was rooting for Molly. Go for it! Take the plunge! Kiss him, already! To say that I became a part of the story is an understatement.

I loved everything about Molly, from her insecurities to putting on her “big girl panties” to going on a lot of first dates to the ladies in her blog class, and she reminded me myself when I first took the plunge and started my own blog. She’s the real deal and her inner dialogue made me laugh out loud.

Danny is a sweet, funny, down-to-earth guy for Molly and sparks fly between the two. I was rooting for them as a couple from the beginning. I swooned, laughed, sighed happily and loved where he took her for their first date.

While this is a fun, flirty romantic comedy, D. E. Haggerty deals with some very real issues (infidelity, divorce, taking care of an elderly parent, career change, taking on your life-long dream, single parent, love, etc.). She balances the serious issues many of my generation faces with humor, wacky situations and grace.

One of the best books I’ve read this year! Don’t hesitate: buy and read this book. Who knows, it may inspire you to chase after your dreams!

Favorite Character:

Molly. I loved her as a character because she is so much fun! She was a delight to read and was honest to a fault. She told it like it was and there was an immediate connection between myself and Molly. I could relate to her on so many levels and I wish she was one of my friends.

Favorite Quote:

“All I know is that every man in the universe, even a hot millionaire who happens to be a good guy as well, pales in comparison with Danny. Oh boy, I’m in trouble.” ~ Molly

Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.

Title: What Lola Wants (Leave Your Shoes On, Book 1)

Author: Calista Fox

Genre: Contemporary Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

LOLA KNOWS WHAT SHE WANTS

Lola Vonn isn’t sure exactly when it happened, but sometime between ages seven and twentysomething, her best friend, Alex, got hot. Really hot. He’s hotter than the blazing Arizona sun-and definitely hotter than the nerdy-cute mathlete she grew up with. And, when she needs to crash at his apartment while looking for a place of her own, Alex becomes a temptation she can’t resist. But while unbuttoning Alex’s buttoned-up self is scorchingly fun, wild child Lola fears risking the best friend she’s ever had on a fling.

HE KNOWS WHAT SHE NEEDS

Alex Reed has wanted Lola since they were teenagers and now that she’s parading around his condo in sexy stilettos and short nighties, he can’t stop the more-than-just-friends fantasies he has every time he looks at his new curvy blonde roommate. Luckily he’s no longer the painfully dorky teenager he once was-and it’s high time he showed Lola that he’s the man for her.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Geez, Alex. It’s just a nightie.” She set aside her papers and wine. “What’s the big deal?”

“Nothing.” He disappeared into his room, but came back seconds later, carrying a plush, navy-colored robe with a gold emblem on the chest from a fancy New York hotel where he’d attended this year’s insurance convention. Or maybe it’d been last year. She couldn’t keep track.

Thrusting it at her, he said, “Do me a favor and cover up while you’re here.”

She eyed him curiously. “Alex, women wear less than this on the beach. On TV, even.”

He stared unwaveringly, his eyes locking with hers. As though he didn’t dare look anywhere else but her face.

“Yes, I have breasts,” she announced. “Newsflash! Not.

“Just wear the robe, Lo.”

She took a step closer to him, but didn’t accept the garment he offered. “What is going on?”

“There are reflective surfaces in my condo. I’m sure you can see—on you—that is much more than ‘just a nightie.’”

Her gaze dropped again. Okay, so there was a healthy amount of cleavage on display. Not to mention thigh. Maybe a little ass cheek. Whatever.

She glanced up at Alex—and caught the flash of lust in his eyes. Possibly because there weren’t glasses to deflect the unexpected expression?

Something clicked in her brain.

“Alex—”

Oh, no way…

A smile spread slowly over her lips. “Oh, my God.”

He shook his head again. “Don’t make anything out of this.”

Too. Late.

Something had changed… She’d been wrong all along.

Was she imagining this, or…?

Holy cow!

Her body instantly gravitated to his as she took a step toward him, barely realizing it. “Alex—you’re hot for me.”

He groaned. “No, I’m not.”

“Liar.”

She’d seen that look before, after all. On other men.

Her gaze roved him from head to toe. He appeared thoroughly disgruntled. In a very sexy way. Completely unkempt. So not his style. His dark hair was unruly, which likely made him crazed, since he was an every-strand-in-its-proper-place kind of guy. He’d rolled up his sleeves and had loosened his tie. Something she’d never known him to do. He didn’t go for the disheveled look, but it totally worked for him. Especially with his current brooding, which made her skin tingle.

What if…?

Her breath hitched.

Maxi had nailed it—Alex had become tall, dark and delicious. He was single and, alas, hetero as far as she knew.

Sure, Lola was unpredictable and impulsive. So very different from him in every conceivable way, yet…opposites attracted, right?

But wait.

What the hell are you thinking?

Her spinning curiosity came to a screeching halt. Alex was so not her idea of a hot hookup.

Well, maybe it could be hot. He had chiseled facial features and broad shoulders. Really nice hands, with long, blunt-tipped fingers and neatly trimmed nails.

And though it seemed that he tried not to devour her with a hungry gaze…he did.

She beamed, rocking back and forth on her bare heels as exhilaration trilled down her spine. “When did this happen?”

What Maxi Needs cover

Title: What Maxi Needs (Leave Your Shoes On, Book 2)

Author: Calista Fox

Genre: Contemporary Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

SHE’S THE BOSS
Maxi Shayne needs to be on her toes as the new vice president of operations for Staci Kay Shoes. With a production crisis looming, she can’t afford distractions – but every tall, chiseled, dangerously handsome inch of Ryan Donovan is exactly that. What’s worse, the gorgeous Aussie is a numbers nerd hired to get the company back on track and Maxi is his new boss. Which means no matter how wildly tempted she is, he’s strictly off-limits.

BUT HE’S READY TO BE ON TOP
Ryan hadn’t factored blue eyes, long legs, and a sexy smile into his equations for success, but after meeting Maxi, he’s definitely ready to recalculate. Keeping his mind on business isn’t easy though, because whenever she’s near, all he can think about is what else she’s got going on above her six-inch black stilettos. Before he can get the job done, Ryan will have to convince Maxi that the office doesn’t have to be all work and no play . . .

Exclusive Excerpt:

Ryan pushed at the bridge of his glasses to hitch them up his nose a notch. Not dismissing the fact that he was muddying waters by bringing intimacy into their exchange, yet unable to stop himself. Maxi easily ignited his inquisitive nature. Stimulated it beyond all belief, to be exact.

“We’re discussing people, of course.”

“Huh,” she mused with a playful smile. “’Cause you’re making me think in scientific terms here, Doc.”

“Hilarious,” he deadpanned at the moniker she’d used. “Point being, at the intervals I’m utilizing for this hypothesis, you might end up spending approximately twenty-six hours a week with someone you’re romantically interested in—not married to, living with, or seriously dating, mind you—versus the fifty hours you spend with someone you’re not romantically involved with. Which would conclusively indicate that you are more attuned in a more in-depth capacity at concentrated levels to the person you work with versus the person you have dinner and occasional sexual relations with—correct?”

Her eyes squeezed shut for a moment. Then flew open. Her mouth worked vigorously like a fish attempting to dislodge a hook stuck in its throat—or maybe she thought she had a rebuttal, but couldn’t quite form the full concept in her head.

Ryan waited patiently as she grappled with her internal ruminations.

“I’m sorry,” she finally repeated, pinning him with an intent look. “I’ve completely forgotten what we were originally discussing.”

“The theory of platonic friendship.” His gaze swept her office, landing on the framed whiteboard mounted to a portion of one wall. He stood. “Let me diagram it out for you—”

“No!” she blurted.

His body jolted at her forcefulness. Jolted in a good way. “No?”

“No.” She set her sandwich aside and got to her feet, gazing deep into his eyes. “No diagramming, extrapolating, analyzing. No low-hanging fruit here, Doc.”

She rounded the desk. Planted her hands on her hips. “Carnal compatibility isn’t about studies and measurements and quantum-fucking-physics. When two people are hot for each other, Ryan, they’re just that—hot for each other!”

Gripping his lapels in her slender fists, she insisted, “It’s sexual chemistry, Einstein. Raw, insane, vibrant, explosive! In its very purest, utterly basic, most fantastic form, it makes you completely irrational and urges you to tear off clothing and give in to every raging desire clawing at you. Clawing at you!”

Ryan’s pulse skyrocketed. Lust flashed through him.

Maxi wasn’t done. “And there is no Gantt chart in the world that can predict it, graph it, keep it on track, or promise that it won’t wreck you to the core of your being. But when it happens? Holy hell! Just let the firestorm burn you through and through!”

She tugged him roughly to her and kissed him deeply, madly, passionately.

Ryan let her. Responded vehemently, in fact, all physical restraint fleeing. In a heartbeat.

Perfectly Book Series by @LindaOConnor98 #RomanticComedy #bookpromo #romance

Cover-PerfectlyHonest200-1

Title: Perfectly Honest (Book 1)

Author: Linda O’Connor

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

You never know where your words will take you . . . When Mikaela Finn agreed to be Sam’s ‘fiancée’ for a weekend, she probably should have told him that she’s a doctor. Sam O’Brien, a.k.a. ‘Dr. Eye Candy’, is trying to shed his playboy reputation and convince a small town hospital that he’s ready to settle down. But when his ‘fiancée’ helps deliver a baby in the middle of the meet and greet, it’s a bit of a shock. If he’d known the whole truth, Sam might have done things a little differently because somehow his ‘fiancée’ ends up stealing his job and his heart. Not exactly the change he wanted. Lies and deceit- it’s a match made in heaven!

Exclusive Excerpt:

Mikaela opened one eye and glanced at her watch. Midnight. She really should get up, clean the paintbrushes, and go home. Then crawl into bed and sleep for, well, she groaned, six hours. If she was lucky.

Just five minutes.

As every muscle in her body relaxed, Mikaela smiled to herself and wondered what the homeowner would think if he knew he had the highest paid painter in the city.

Mikaela woke with a start to the sound of voices. Disoriented, in unfamiliar surroundings, she looked down at her short shorts and loose shirt covered with spatters of paint. Painting, of course. She must have fallen asleep in the chair, and checking her watch, she saw that it was two o’clock in the morning. Shit. She rubbed her eyes and yawned. Pulling herself out of the chair, she listened to the voices. One voice was female, sounding impatient and unhappy and one male, sounding apologetic and resigned.

“I know it’s not ideal, Sophia, but it’s what I want. I’m tired of the large city, the tertiary care center, and all the politics. I’m tired of all the meetings and all the committees. I want a smaller hospital in a smaller city. I want a life.”

“Nonsense, Sam,” the woman shot back. “You don’t know what you want or what’s good for you. You need to pay your dues now to reap the benefits later.”

“Look, I don’t expect you to understand. I’m grateful you’ve agreed to help me out, but . . . ”

Mikaela wandered into the hallway and stopped when she saw the two of them at the front door. The woman had unbuttoned her coat, and as she put her hands on her hips, there was a flash of the red cocktail dress she wore underneath. The man was a foot taller and wearing a suit. A very nice fitting suit, Mikaela mused, as she came up behind him.

The woman noticed Mikaela first, and her startled gasp had the man looking over his shoulder. Mikaela wasn’t sure who looked more shocked, the man, who moved to shield the woman, or the woman, who raked her gaze over Mikaela from head to toe. As Mikaela fought the urge to straighten her shirt and fix her hair, she decided, definitely, the woman.

The woman’s eyes narrowed, the hands on her hips became clenched at her sides, and her face flushed red. Mikaela held her breath.

The woman pushed at the man’s shoulder and spun him around to face her. “Why you! You! ‘I can’t invite you in, the house is being painted,’” she mimicked. “Is that the new code word for ‘mistress?’ You could have just told me we were through. Well, I’m done. This is the last straw. You pig!” The woman spun on her heel and wrenched the door open.

“Sophia, wait!”

“No, wait,” Mikaela added. She lurched forward, now wide-awake.

The woman stormed out and slammed the door.

The man turned to Mikaela. “Who the hell are you?”

Linda O Connor

Author Biography:

Linda has been writing romance novels for three years and sincerely thanks Debby Gilbert at Soul Mate Publishing for the ultimate encouragement to her writing – with the leap to publishing. She has many titles including Doctor, Mom, and proud Canadian, but “Linda O’Connor – hereinafter called the Author” is one of the sweetest.

Contemporary romantic comedies are her favorite novels to read and write. Linda balances writing with her work as a physician at an Urgent Care Clinic and being a mom to three sons (luckily grown and capable of throwing together a decent meal, in a pinch). She also likes to keep active and cycle, cross-country ski, skate, walk with her husband or dance every day.

Title: Perfectly Reasonable (Book 2)

Author: Linda O’Connor

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

Love what you do and do what you love. Sounds perfectly reasonable, but chances are, you’ll find your passion in the last place you look . . .

Margo MacMillan finished medical school, but in the process, her self-confidence and self-esteem took a beating. So for the sake of self-preservation, she’s stepped away from medicine to re-group. In the meantime, painting soothes her soul and pays the bills.

Trace Bennett set his sights on a medical degree and has to prepare the perfect medical school application. His big plan is to paint his condo for a little feng shui divine luck. When Margo shows up to paint, he realizes he’s found exactly what he’s looking for. He just has to convince Margo to share more than the art of medicine.

She’s got it. He wants it. It’s Perfectly Reasonable.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Margo MacMillan wished she could take the job. Look at that view.

Beyond the picture window and down eighteen floors, waves lapped against the Lake Ontario shore despite frigid January temperatures. Above, it was all blue skies and sunshine. Very Zen.

This side of the window, it was blue eyes and sun-streaked hair. Trace, the pheromone-radiating, sweet-boy-next-door of her current client, was very . . . unZen.

“It has to be done by Tuesday,” he insisted.

Fat chance of that happening, considering it was already Friday afternoon. Too bad. He really was . . . breathtaking. “No can do. I have another client lined up for next week.”

“Bump them.”

Her eyebrows winged up. “I can’t do that. They’re waiting for me, and I promised to start Monday.”

“Trades do it all the time.”

She frowned at him. “Not me. If I say I’m going to start a job on Monday, I start on Monday. You’ll have to find another painter.” Her curls bounced as she turned to go.

“Wait.” He touched her arm, and Margo felt a zing of electricity shimmer through her. “You could do it this weekend.”

“I don’t work weekends.”

“I’ll pay double.”

Margo looked him in the eyes. Eyes that were icy pale blue, almost silver, and too intense to focus on, except they were set in a chiseled face with a square jaw and the most disarming smile.

Her fees were already pretty high. What could possibly be so urgent that he’d pay twice what it was worth?

She glanced around the room. Big open space and pristine beige walls. Sleek leather furniture. Glass, metal, and a zebra-skin rug. And staged for a cover shoot.

What was the deal? Was he desperate to erase the memory of a girlfriend? It was more than possible with the combination of those low-slung jeans, gray T-shirt showing off broad shoulders and flat abs, and that close-cropped blond hair. He towered over her, and she was taller than average. Yeah, it was definitely possible. Or maybe a new ladylove he had to please? She raked her gaze over him. Nah. He wouldn’t need a new paint color for that.

She sighed and thought of the student loan she had yet to pay off. If she prepped the walls that evening, she could probably get the painting done by Monday. “All right. But I’d have to start tonight and come back early Saturday and Sunday.”

His shoulders relaxed. “Not a problem. I can be here.”

“Have you chosen the paint color?”

“No, but it has to be blue.”

“Blue?”

“Yes. Pale blue, gray-blue, dark blue, I don’t care. Just as long as it’s blue.”

She shrugged. “Okay then. I’ll bring over some paint chips later and you can choose. You’ll have to make a decision tonight, so I can stop on my way tomorrow to pick it up.”

“I can do that. And I’ll invite some of my buddies over to move the furniture.”

“That would be great. Just push everything to the center of the room. I can cover it with plastic.”

Trace nodded. “Thank you for this. I really appreciate it. I’ve heard you’re the best.”

She smiled. Charm and good looks. He’ll go far. “You’re welcome. I’ll finish the job next door and come back at about seven.”

“Works for me. See you then.”

Title: Supporting Roles (Part of the Hollywood Stardust Series) each book is a stand-alone about a different couple in the same group of movie stars

Author: Kim Carmichael

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Book Blurb:

Hollywood Stardust Series:

What’s your fantasy?

Twenty years ago, the movie Hollywood Stardust defined a generation of teens and changed the four actors’ lives forever.

Supporting Roles:

Some girls only want to have fun.

Giselle Abromowitz lives her life with two simple rules. 1. Have fun. 2. Defer to rule number one. She does what she wants when she wants, and when things get too complicated she moves on to happier, more casual pastures.

As the older brother to Hollywood star, Logan Alexander, Wilson Alexander has played the role of pacifier, parent and protector. With the opening of his club it is his time to step in to the spotlight and make his own life.

When Giselle stumbles into Wilson’s regimented life and takes over, Wilson knows he found the missing piece of his life, now he only needs to convince his lady love that fun and love can coexist.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Take another drink. I’m sure you can conjure a memory or two.” She gave him the last of her beverage.

As he created another dirty martini, his mind went into overdrive and something materialized. “Well, if I tell you that I’ve had a job since I was twelve and I have always been gainfully employed, does that count?”

“Not only does it count, but it doesn’t surprise me. Something tells me that you are very strong and very responsible.” She leaned in closer.

He bent down, meeting her nose to nose. “Something tells me that you are exceptionally smart.”

Before he had time to think about what was happening, she moved forward and caressed her lips against his.

Her kiss stoked his already aroused senses and without second guessing his next move or worrying if he was doing the right thing, he grabbed her shoulders, pulled her closer, and deepened the kiss.

A kiss she whole-heartedly returned.

Lord, lord, lord, he didn’t remember the last true kiss he received, or gave for that matter. Especially not one that included tantalizing tongue tangling, little moans and a woman twisting her hands in his collar to bring him closer.

“I think I have to go get a part for the dishwasher.” Out of nowhere, Harvey interrupted their interlude.

They both turned toward the intruder.

“What should I tell him?” Wilson didn’t mean to voice the question.

“Tell him to finish tomorrow.” Her laugh vibrated through him.

According to their schedule, they needed to get the plumbing done. Electricity would be tomorrow. Everything had rules and regulations and a method.

Giselle nuzzled his neck. “Harvey come back tomorrow, I’m suddenly busy.” The schedule could go to hell. “Close the door on your way out.”

They looked at each other, and as if thinking with one mind, they went right back to their make out session. Now their kisses possessed more urgency and passion, her taste filled him, sweet with a tang from the alcohol, and he had to have more, feel her up against him.

She must have wanted the same thing. Her hands wandered over his chest and she balanced on her knees on the barstool in an attempt to get closer to him.

Not wanting to stop her from doing whatever she wanted, and needing her as well, again he did the unexpected, in a move that even surprised him, swiped everything off the bar and pulled her over.

She continued kissing him and lay right down on the bar. With no hesitation, he joined her and they both turned to their sides to continue their explorations. They moved fast.

#BookReview: Jack Gets His Man by @denaehaggerty #RomComedy #MMRomance #MFRWAuthor

Jack gets his man

Title: Jack Gets His Man

Author: D. E. Haggerty

Genre: Romantic Comedy, Romantic Suspense, M/M Romance

Book Blurb:

Jack’s life is awesome. His store is making money hand over fist and his best friend has found love. So what if he’s feeling a bit restless and put out about his upcoming birthday and his ex is being a pain in his fabulous behind? That’s nothing he can’t handle. But then his smoking hot new bookkeeper discovers things at the store aren’t actually as they seem. Someone is playing fast and loose with the finances. Jack’s bestie and his gal pals, the gray-haired knitting detectives, jump at the chance to solve Jack’s problems. When they aren’t re-enacting scenes from spy thrillers, they’re setting Jack up on dates and generally insinuating themselves into his love life. They’re determined to find love for Jack as well as his missing money. Will Jack catch a thief or find love? Either way Jack’s going to get his man.

My Review:

I loved this book from the moment I started reading it. Jack is living the best life ever. That is, until his sexy brand-new bookkeeper discovers a financial mess. Suddenly, Jack’s life is spinning out of control. Someone he trusts is stealing huge amounts of money and rigging the books. Will Jack discover who’s behind the betrayal and finally get his man?

This is a modern-day screwball comedy, complete with new crushes, annoying exes, extortion, best friends and a gang of elderly knitting Murder She Wrote wannabes. I laughed my way throughout Jack’s misadventures, from hiring a bookkeeper to unravelling the mystery behind the missing money. The romance was sweet and the heat level was low.

What I loved most about this book was the way the author concentrated on the characters and plot. The characters flew off the page and I grew attached to them. I want to read more adventures of Jack and the gang.

If you’re looking for a light, funny romance, this is the book for you!

Favorite Character:

Jack. I had a best friend like Jack when I was living in California years ago. Many times when I was reading this book, I could see myself in the character Izzy, Jack’s best friend. I loved how honest and emotional he was. He came across as a living being rather than just a two-dimensional character in a romantic comedy.

My Rating: 5 stars

D E Haggerty

Author Biography:

I was born and raised in Wisconsin but think I’m a European. After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. After high school I returned to the U.S. to go to college ending up with a Bachelor’s degree in History at the tender age of twenty while still managing to spend time bouncing back and forth to Europe during vacations. Unable to find a job after college and still suffering from wanderlust, I joined the U.S. Army as a Military Policewoman for five years. While stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, I met my future husband, a flying – literally – Dutchman. After being given my freedom from the Army, I went off to law school. I finished law school and moved to the Netherlands with my husband and became a commercial lawyer for more than a decade. During a six month break from the lawyering world, I wrote my first book,Unforeseen Consequences. Although I finished the book, I went back to the law until I could no longer take it and upped stakes and moved to Germany to start a B&B. Three years after starting the B&B, I got the itch to try something new and decided to pull the manuscript for Unforeseen Consequences out of the attic and get it published as an e-book. Deciding that I may have indeed finally found what I want to do with my life, I went on to write Buried Appearances. After moving to Istanbul, I wrote Life Discarded. Feeling pressured by my girlfriends to write a chick lit novel, I tried my hand at humor with Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem. Since that was so much fun, I decided to make a series with the characters from the book. Between playing tennis, running much slower than I would like, trying to adopt every stray dog within a 5-mile radius, traveling to exotic new locales, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, addictively watching new movies and reading books like they are going out of style, I write articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, review other indie authors’ books, write a blog about whatever comes to mind and am working on my sixth book.
