There’s Magic in a Kiss: Guest Post by USA Today Bestseller @RuthACasie #kiss #romance #MFRWAuthor

kiss 1

Close your eyes and imagine the perfect kiss. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Got the picture set in your mind? Good.

Believe it or not a kiss requires 34 facial muscles and 112 postural muscles. The facial muscles are a given but postural? I’m serious. 112 muscles that relate to your posture are also involved. Of all these 11 muscles the most important is the orbicularis oris muscle, which is used to pucker your very sensitive lips. It’s your kissing muscle. We’re not talking about French kissing where your tongue, also a muscle, is the primary player. I’ll save that for another guest post.

kiss 2

Kissing has many health benefits. Affection in general has stress-reducing effects. Kissing in particular reduces stress which increases relationship satisfaction and lowers cholesterol. And it doesn’t stop there. Kissing can also encourage the release epinephrine and norepinephrine (adrenaline and noradrenaline) into the blood which will cause an adrenaline rush and increased cardiovascular activity. That’s why when you kiss that certain someone your heart races off. See, it’s magic.

There are also a lot of different types of kisses:

  • Romantic Kisses are an important expression of love and erotic emotions. This kiss is not only about lips touching lips. This kiss requires some intimacy.
  • Affectionate Kisses express feelings closeness without the erotic element and symbolize loyalty, gratitude, compassion, sympathy, intense joy, and profound sorrow.
  • Ritual Kisses are formal, symbolic or indicate devotion, and respect. We see this type of kiss in the wedding ceremony when the bride and groom kiss. We also see this type of kiss when national leaders meet.
  • Kiss of Peace demonstrates deep spiritual devotion. It was used in the early Catholic Church and also in secular festivities. In the Middle Ages the kiss of peace sealed the agreement with enemies. Even knights kissed each other before they went into combat-a way of forgiving each other all their wrongs.
  • Kiss of Respect was reverent and has an ancient origin. This kiss represents a mark of fealty, humility and reverence. The kiss on the forehead considered a ‘kiss of homage’ showed utmost respect.
  • Kiss of Friendship is used in America and Europe as a greeting between friends. Once only between women, today it is not uncommon to see a man kiss in greeting.

Ancient cultures threw kisses to the sun and to the moon, as well as to the images of the gods. Persians were the first to kiss the hand. Here are some different kinds of kisses from various cultures:

  • In Ancient Rome and some modern Pagan beliefs, worshipers, when passing the statue or image of a god or goddess, will kiss their hand and wave it towards the deity.
  • The holy kiss or kiss of peace is a traditional part of most Christian liturgies, though often replaced with an embrace or handshake today in Western cultures.
  • In the gospels of Matthew and Mark, not Luke or John, Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. This is the basis of the term “the kiss of Judas”.
  • Catholics will kiss rosary beads as a part of prayer, or kiss their hand after making the sign of the cross. It is also common to kiss the wounds on a crucifix, or any other image of Christ’s Passion.
  • Pope John Paul II would kiss the ground on arrival in a new country.
  • Visitors to the Pope traditionally kiss his foot.
  • Catholics traditionally kiss the ring of a cardinal or bishop.
  • Catholics traditionally kiss the hand of a priest.
  • Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Christians often kiss the icons around the church on entering; they will also kiss the cross and/or the priest’s hand in certain other customs in the Church, such as confession or receiving a blessing.
  • Hindus sometimes kiss the floor of a temple.
  • Local lore in Ireland suggests that kissing the Blarney Stone will bring the gift of the gab.
  • Jews will kiss the Western wall of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, and other religious articles during prayer such as the Torah, usually by touching their hand, prayer shawl, or prayer book to the Torah and then kissing it. Jewish law prohibits kissing members of the opposite sex, except for spouses and certain close relatives.
  • Muslims may kiss the Black Stone during Hajj-their pilgrimage to Mecca.

This is all very nice but dare you tell me what type of kiss you really like best?

You might be wondering what I’m about. Sit back and let me tell you.

I’m happiest when I’m telling stories either chatting with a group of friends or writing them down. I love to put my hero and heroine in tough situations and dare them to work it out—together, always together. They haven’t disappointed me.  Oh, they complain but in the end their love and relationships are stronger than ever.

I’ve been filling up my days and staying busy. While I keep tormenting my druid knight, I’m outlining a new series. The working title is the River of Time. It’s about an elite technology security officer, whose job is to eliminate time travelers, but he falls in love with a time traveling art appraiser and has to choose between his duty and his one chance for a timeless love. I love this story line because it lets me stretch my contemporary voice while working in historic time periods. I think this is the best of both worlds.

For most of you, my contemporary side will be a surprise. Here are five other things you probably don’t know about me:

I filled up my passport in one year.

I worked for a large financial institution, way before webinars and Skype. As a product manager I visited with clients and potential clients. All my clients were overseas. My sales support program took me to almost every European country (sorry not Liechtenstein) as well as a good many in Asia and South America. Have I got some great travel stories!

I have a medieval romance story about the seven sons of a seventh son.

Only one book is finished, and published. The Guardian’s Witch. The others are in various draft stages. The heroine of The Guardian’s Witch was born with veil over her face, a caul. Throughout history, caul bearers are believed to have a special purpose—to serve mankind, guide people to understand themselves and the world within which they live. Many cultures believe this makes the child “King by right” with special powers ranging from leadership abilities to natural healers and having greater insight. I was born with caul. I’m still trying to figure out my power.

I did a rap to “How Many Trucks Can a Tow Truck Tow If a Tow Truck Could Tow Trucks.”

I was a guest reader at my son’s first grade class (he’s out of college and on his own now). I rapped the book while my son was my boom box. We had a great time.

When I cook I dance.

Our kitchen isn’t large but ever since Paul (my DH) and took ballroom dance lessons I practice between the fridge, the stove, and the table. Caution, don’t twirl or dip while carrying dinner to the table. Ouch!

My Sudoku book is in the bathroom.

I’m not saying anything else about that.

Excerpt

“El, you okay? You seem to be someplace else.” He didn’t let her hand go.

She glanced at his eyes. The ones that made every woman who met him melt. “I was thinking about the day we met.”

He put his arm around her and drew her close. “Ah, you mean the day I gallantly saved your life.”

She laughed and snuggled closer. “You did not. I was tired that’s all.”

“Please, let me think you needed me. There are so few instances.” He kissed her forehead and went over to the captain to help with their luggage.

The smile slid off her face. For a moment she felt… alone. Need him? If there was ever a time she needed him it was now, but they were set on a collision course and she had no idea of the outcome. She shook off the uneasy sensation and grabbed some of the small bags. Alan was on his cell phone.

Book Blurb

Morgan and Margot are wild  about  each  other.  But early on in their  relationship,  Morgan  was  focused  on establishing himself with one of New York’s most prestigious law firms and Margot was busy making a name for herself in the antiques business. For the past ten years, commitment was not something either of them wanted.

A visit to Morgan’s brother and sister-in-law changes both their lives. Now it seems all the two of them can think of is  making a commitment—they  just don’t know how to tell each other. They are both afraid of driving the other away.

Morgan keeps  reminding  Margot  she  doesn’t  want  a  commitment,  hoping  she’s  changed  her  mind.  Margot thinks Morgan needs to see someone else interested in her to force him into action.

In truth, all they need to do is talk to each other and say what’s in their hearts. Will they come to their senses or deny the loving relationship they both desire?

Excerpt

With her back to the door, she scanned the crowded bachelor/bachelorette party to see if Morgan had returned. He’d stepped out an hour ago. Business, he’d said. Aren’t you glad we’re not doing this? She thought about his words from earlier in the day. No, damn it. This is what she wanted. Do you hear me, Morgan Stuart? I. Want. Forever.

The DJ had almost everyone—including every woman present—doing a line dance on the packed dance floor. She had a clear view of the bar where the men were hanging out, gawking and making comments while they had their drinks. Nope, he wasn’t there, either. She was about to give up when a movement by the nest of cocktail tables captured her attention.

Morgan raised his bottle of beer in salute. “And I only want forever with you,” she murmured. She ran her hands down her snug black dress—making sure it clung in all the right places—then maneuvered across the crowded room, eager to get to him. She wanted to see if his eyes smoldered when he looked at her. As soon as she reached him she realized she needed more courage. She removed the bottle from his hand and took a swallow.

“Whoa. You don’t like beer. Remember?”  Ignoring his outstretched hand, she took another gulp and tried not to screw up her face. The stuff was vile, but she wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction.

Those little pink things—the ones with vodka, vermouth and strawberries that she’d had all afternoon—slid down so easily, along with the shots she’d had a few minutes ago with the girls in the bridal party. At the moment, she didn’t care what she drank. Something wet and mind numbing was what she wanted.

Maybe the beer would steady the room and stop it from spinning. No, the dancers were a blur and now her stomach was complaining.

Since the beer made her stomach queasier, she placed her hands on the back of the chair and held on for dear life. A sideways glimpse was all she needed to see Morgan shaking his head. “You’re going to regret this in the morning,”  he said, bending close to her. She closed her eyes and tried to control a shudder as his low voice and warm breath bathed her ear. She turned to face him, his lips a kiss away and his eyes…his eyes—

5 Things to Help You Through Writing When You’re Sick by @RuthACasie #amwriting #romance

RAC 5 Things to Help With Writing When Sick

In a perfect world, I’d begin my writing day after eight hours of sleep, a large cup of my favorite coffee, a clear idea of my story, a perfect outline, and all day to write.

It’s not a perfect world. But you knew that already. The overwhelming reason why my perfect writing day went out the window (or down the toilet) had everything to do with being sick.

It’s been a difficult season here in the Northeast. One day you’re romping around in the park in 70 degree weather and the next you’re plodding through your driveway in fourteen inches of snow!

I did everything right. I got my flu shot. I kept myself hydrated. I got seven to eight hours of sleep every night. I ate right and exercised. Then how did I get sick! Not only did I get sick, but it hit me the day after my daughter came home from the hospital with her new baby.

Here is our new Caylee Eva. I was quarantined for a week while I got over the brunt of my cold and finished my antibiotics.

Okay, so I shamelessly got a picture of my new granddaughter into this post. I digress.

Book blogs and seminars on writing stress that writing every day is key to sharpening your craft. It’s the old joke, how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.

But every day you don’t write your writing skills dull. It seems that writing dulls faster than it sharpens. After a week of not writing I knew I would have to work harder to get back into gear.

My cold had settled in my chest. Bouts of coughing and wheezing kept me up at night. Our new cold water humidifier helped some, but not enough. Cold medicines, cough medicine and even an inhaler got the symptoms under control by mid-week, but the rust was settling on my writing gears.

I was still tired, congested and chugging bottles of cough medicine but I made a large cup of tea with honey and lemon then sat down to write. So here is my list of 5 things that helped me along.

#1 READ

After a few days of not writing I found I was not close to the story. I read to get back into my character’s head. In truth, after I finish the first draft I usually step away from the story for a few days to get that distance. That way when I edit the story it’s with a fresh eye.

#2 Outline

I do this with all my projects, but after a few days of not touching the work it was the perfect time to update my outline and again, get back into the story. I use bullet points to note what generally happens in the chapter, identify the point-of-view character, and note in red anything that is missing. This gives me a quick view of what needs to be done.

#3 WRITE

Now, I’m ready to write. Depending on my energy level (and this time it was really low) I decided to add in those pieces that I identified as missing and removed them from the outline. Later in the week, when I felt better I was ready to move the story forward. I found that I tired easily and wrote in short spurts, but several short spurts were better than none.

#4 WORD COUNT

I keep my daily project word count on an Excel spreadsheet. I have a daily word count target and try to reach it. This is similar to having a deadline and surprisingly, I enjoy working toward the deadline. Last month, my local RWA chapter had its own writing challenge for the month, 30K words. I used my spreadsheet and was excited as I reached the goal.

#5 REST

Sometimes, no matter how much you plan or how diligent you are, your body tells you to stop. Another indicator is falling asleep at your desk. That’s not a pretty sight. Look. When you’re really sick, you need to put your work, as much as you love it, aside and let your body heal.

BONUS

One other thing you can do while you’re sick, journal. Think of it as research for a story that has a sick character. Write down how you feel, record how others respond around you, and dream. Your body may be defeated but your mind is fine. Dream out your story and when you’re ready to write it will be there.

Knight of Rapture Final Cover RACasie

Title: Knight of Rapture

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy, Time Travel, Medieval

Book Blurb:

He crossed the centuries to find her…

For months Lord Arik has been trying to find the right combination of runes to create the precise spell to rescue his wife, Rebeka, but the druid knight will soon discover that reaching her four hundred years in the future is only the beginning of his quest. He arrives in the 21st century to find her memory of him erased, his legacy on the brink of destruction, and traces of dark magick at every turn.

A threat has followed…

Bran, the dark druid, is more determined than ever to get his revenge. His evil has spread across the centuries. Arik will lose all. Time is his weapon, and he’s made sure his plan leaves no one dear to Arik, in past or present, safe from the destruction.

But their enemy has overlooked the strongest magick of all…

Professor Rebeka Tyler is dealing with more than just a faulty memory. Ownership of Fayne Manor, her home, has been called into question. Convenient accidents begin happening putting those she cares for in the line of fire. And then there’s the unexpected arrival of a strange man dressed like he belonged in a medieval fair—a man who somehow is always around when needed, and always on her mind. She doesn’t know who to trust. But one thing is certain. Her family line and manor have survived for over eleven centuries. She won’t let them fall, not on her watch… in any century.

Excerpt:

Unsure, she touched the shield again. It was still. The scream, she was certain it caused the tremor. She searched Arik’s face. He wasn’t aware of it. The beat echoing in her head was almost a steady tone. Fear twisted around her heart. His blood stained the barrier. She was certain he would die if he kept this pace. She couldn’t wait.

She gathered her strength and with lightning speed built the chant inside her. When she couldn’t hold it back any longer she let it loose in a grief-stricken scream.

Everything stopped. The wind. His pounding.

They stood facing each other.

“No, Beka. No,” he screamed his arms spread out across the barrier. She watched the glazed look of despair spread across his face.

A small portion of the shield fractured, then another, and another. The tiny explosions gathered momentum until they built into a frenzy and every inch of the shield was cracked.

Then silence.

She hesitated but at last placed her hand on the shield. Arik did the same. Their hands separated by the splintered magick. The fractured shield trembled, small pieces tumbled around them. For a brief moment their hands touched and she felt his warmth and love.

A great force pulled them apart as if they were puppets at the will of a puppeteer. They struggled to their feet and ran to each other but before they could get to the opening the portal snapped closed and vanished.

His roar echoed through the mountains. “I will find you.”

“I love you,” she sobbed as the portal took her away.

Away from him.

Why I Like Medieval-Renaissance Heroes by @RuthACasie #guestpost #romance

Why I like Medieval-Renaissance Heroes: A Guest Post by USA Today Bestselling Author Ruth A. Casie

KnightofRunesFinalnew

Several years ago, my friend Joanna Chambers had a discussion. Joanna thinks Regency men are the uber Romance Hero. She gave me her top three reasons in a guest post in November.

Now, I agree Regency men look good, live in a world filled with titles, and appear to live a life of leisure.  I enjoy Mr. Darcy but Regency men are all too tame. Let me give you my top three reasons why I think Medieval-Renaissance knights are the best.

  1. Appearance

Some enjoy the breeches, shiny boots, tight coats and acres of snowy white linen. I love the shirtless look of a well-defined chest and ripped abs. It speaks protection, comfort and well, truly, their great to look at. I enlarged my book cover, Knight of Runes to 8.5×11 and keep it posted next to my desk.

Every so often, after my husband’s shower, he comes into my writing room in his towel and poses next it. He thanks me for not including his full face. We can both dream.

knight-hood-2065312_640

  1. Ascendance

Knights were members of the noble class. Likely candidates were chosen at boyhood and trained. A lesser or unlikely man could aspire to knighthood and reach his dreams, if he is found worthy. Knights, their code of conduct and chivalry, “Protect the weak, defenseless, helpless, and fight for the general welfare of all,” inspired literature and the foundation of courtship through the middle ages up until the turn of this century.  What would a romance be without a (k)night?

  1. Adventure

Knighthood comes with its requirements: save the damsel in distress, right the wrongs, and do away with the villain. Of course there were trials he had to go through to prove he was worthy. Usually he would somehow loose his shirt and give the damsel a glimpse of those perfect pecks and adorable abs.

Knights, not only had to prove themselves worthy on the field of battle (for his king, the damsel or even for himself) but also had to learn balance the command and control needed to succeed with his own wants and desires. It’s a lesson Lord Arik learns in Knight of Runes.

Druid Knight Series 2 Book Spread 250x250

What do you think?  Regency heroes or Medieval-Renaissance Knights?  Or something entirely different?

Title: Knight of Runes

Author:  Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Medieval Romance, Romance, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance, Time Travel

Publisher: Carina Press

Blurb:

When Lord Arik, a druid knight, finds Rebeka Tyler wandering his lands without protection, he swears to keep her safe. But Rebeka can take care of herself. When Arik sees her clash with a group of attackers using a strange fighting style, he’s intrigued.

Rebeka is no ordinary seventeenth-century woman—she’s travelled back from the year 2011, and she desperately wants to return to her own time. She poses as a scholar sent by the king to find out what’s killing Arik’s land. But as she works to decode the ancient runes that are the key to solving this mystery and sending her home, she finds herself drawn to the charismatic and powerful Arik.

As Arik and Rebeka fall in love, someone in Arik’s household schemes to keep them apart, and a dark druid with a grudge prepares his revenge. Soon Rebeka will have to decide whether to return to the future or trust Arik with the secret of her time travel and her heart.

Short Excerpt:

A man, club in hand, rushed at Arik. Before the attacker could bring his weapon into play, Arik pivoted around him. He raised his sword high, and slammed the hilt’s steel pommel squarely on the man’s head. Arik moved on before the man’s lifeless body dropped to the ground.

Willem and Simon, on either side of Arik, advanced through the melee. Their swift continuous swordplay moved smoothly from one stroke to the next, whipping through the air. They slashed on the downswing and again on the backswing, sweeping their weapons back into position to repeat the killing sequence. The knight and his soldiers steadily advanced, punishing any man who dared to come near them.

“For Honor!” Logan’s war cry carried from the small camp up river to Arik’s ears.

Arik stiffened. Both camps were now under attack. He pulled his blade from an attacker’s chest. The body crumpled to the blood-soaked ground. Arik breathed deeply, the coppery taste of blood in the air. “For Honor!” he bellowed in answer. His men echoed his call, arms thrown wide, muscles quivering, the berserker’s rage overtaking them.

The remaining attackers paled and fled headlong into the forest.

Motioning to his men to follow, Arik raced toward the camp. He could hear the shouts, and cursed himself for not seeing the danger. He crested the hill and came to an abrupt halt.

Logan’s sword ripped through the air as he protected Doward. The tinker drew his short blade and did as much damage as he could. But it was the woman Arik noticed.

Her skirt hiked up, she twirled her walking stick like a weapon with an expertise that left him slack-jawed. She dispatched the attackers, one by one, in a deadly well-practiced dance. A man rushed toward her, knife in hand. The sneer on his face didn’t match the fear in his eyes. She stepped out of his line of attack, extended her stick to her side, and holding it with both hands swept the weapon forward, striking the attacker across the bridge of his nose. Blood exploded from his face in an arc of fine spray as his head snapped back. Droplets dusted her face creating an illusion of bright red freckles. As he fell, she reversed her swing and caught him hard behind his knees.

He went down on his back, spread-eagled. She swung her stick over her head and landed a precise and disabling blow to his forehead that knocked him unconscious.

As she spun to face the next threat her eyes captured Arik’s and held. In the space of an instant, time slowed to a crawl. Her hair slowly loosened from its pins and swirled out around her. His breath caught and his heartbeat quickened as a rapturous surge raced through his body. Something eternal and familiar, with a sense of longing, unsettled him. In the next heartbeat, she tore her eyes away, leaving him empty. Time resumed its normal pace. Another attacker lay at her feet.

Arik joined the fight.

Title Christmas in Havenport

Author Ruth A. Casie

Genre Holiday Romance, Contemporary Romance

Publisher Timeless Scribes

Book Blurb

In the quaint seaside town of Havenport, Rhode Island, five couples find their happily ever afters with a little help from the romance section of The Final Chapter bookstore.

Ruth A. Casie ~ I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Beth Alexander, best-selling romance writer, has lost her muse, her fan base, and maybe the loyalty of her beloved agent. Sales of her new release plummet on the best seller list, and her contract with her publisher is in jeopardy. A heat-of-the-moment social media comment about a rival author goes viral, and not in a good way. No one knows that the rival author is the stuff male cover models are made of, least of all Beth Alexander. She heads home to Havenport, Rhode Island for a Christmas book signing, and a chance to lay low and let the storm pass.

Beth’s chance encounter with a handsome, witty stranger has her heart racing, and her muse seemingly back. But, will the new story line she’s created save her career? Or will her handsome savior betray her and turn out to be her worst nightmare?

Lita Harris ~ Winter Wonderland

Olivia Baxter struggles with her indecision to return to college and heads to Havenport, Rhode Island to visit her aunt during winter break. Memories of prior Christmas’ emerge, and a chance meeting with an interesting stranger makes Olivia think twice about staying in New England or returning to her studies.

Max Porter has been searching for his biological parents, which leads him to Havenport, Rhode Island. He wanders into the Final Chapter bookstore and befriends Olivia, an open minded, and warm person who wants to help him find the answers to his past.

Together, the young couple discover new things about themselves that lead them to think about where their lives may lead next. Will they move on to the next chapter together, or go their separate ways?

Emma Kaye ~ Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Jane Caulfield should have known better than to read aloud from a book of magick during her famous sister-in-law’s book signing at The Final Chapter bookstore. After all, the last spell she cast brought her and her brother forward in time two hundred years. She knows the power of magick.

She didn’t know the spell would bring her nineteenth century love, Adam Royce, forward in time. Or that he would assume he’d died and joined her in heaven. Jane gets more than she bargained for trying to persuade Adam they’re both alive and in the twenty-first century.

Jane knows they’re soul mates, but convincing Adam may not be so easy. Will Adam insist on returning to his own time, or can Jane use both love and a little magick to help him understand that this time and place is exactly where he’s meant to be?

Nicole S. Patrick ~ White Christmas

Prosecutor Savannah Moore’s life changed in an instant. Career on hiatus, recovering from an attack, she finds solace for the holidays in the town of Havenport, Rhode Island.  A change of pace for sure. Just what she needs to heal and rebuild her confidence to testify against her attacker. An unexpected meeting of gorgeous Marc “Mac” MacDonald leaves Savannah unsure of her next move. Should she stay in Havenport with this brave, sexy, and hard, yet gentle former Marine? Or, should she return to the crazy life of courtrooms and cases? Mac helps her understand that taking one day at a time might lead to a future she least expected.

Mac MacDonald has finally found a place to call home. A place where he feels part of a family. His car repair business is booming, his former girlfriend and all her drama is history, and he’s ready to move on to the next chapter in his life. Savannah Moore is cute, sexy, and tougher than she looks. But when someone tries to hurt her, Mac realizes he’s never had this intense degree of protective instincts for anyone, not even in combat. Savannah has touched a place in his heart that surprises and thrills him. Can he convince her to let this thing between them grow?

Julie Rowe ~ Merry Christmas, Baby

Marine biologist Mattie Clark is moving back to her hometown after the break-up of her marriage, but she doesn’t expect to run into her high school crush (literally) only days after returning, or to discover he’s not the smooth operator she remembers. Charles Walker survived a horrific fire only to have his whole world fall apart. His fiancé walked out on him, taking his confidence in himself with her. His own family avoids him now, uncomfortable with the scars he carries. He sinks into a depression nothing will cure, except a short, curvy tornado named Mattie Clark. She seems determined to pull him out of the black hole he’s been living in, but is this a short term fling or is she willing to stay for the long haul?

“Excuse me,” the librarian announced. “Please finish up. The library closes in fifteen minutes.”

Six o’clock. Research was a singular process for him. The solitude good for concentration, but isolating. These past few hours sitting across from Beth were comfortable and productive. He’d filled up pages in his notebook. He glanced at her. She pulled the newspaper out of her shoes.

“Here, let me help you with that.” He took the shoes out of her hand. Kneeling in front of her he grasped the heel of her foot. The intimate touch had him breathing hard. It made her giggle.

His face turned up, one eyebrow raised.

“I haven’t played Princess of the castle since I was a kid and my brother got too old to play the Prince. We’d use Mom’s clear plastic high heels for glass slippers.” She let out another giggle, which got her a loud shush from Wilma.

She had no idea how her unassuming joy and the intimate touch affected him. He slipped the boot on her. “Ah, m’lady you must be the Princess.” He stood and gave his best attempt at a courtly bow before he formally offered her his hand and helped her to her feet.

She stood up and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Her neck flushed and when he gazed into her eyes intelligence and friendship stared back at him. That was something to build on.

The moment passed and she broke away, gathered her things, and stepped over to Wilma’s desk to check out the armful of books she’d accumulated. Finished with Wilma, she headed to the door.

He packed his things and returned his books to the cart. Out of the corner of his eye he admired the sway of her hips and shape of her leg. She was dynamite in those high heel boots but in this weather she’d kill herself. He straightened his shoulders and stepped up beside her at the library door, ready to leave.

He followed her gaze out the glass door. There had to be six inches of snow on the ground.

“I have to get to the Inn,” she murmured. The rumbling of a motor and loud scraping sound caught his attention. Through the falling snow, yellow lights flashed and the snowplow came into view. The lumbering truck pushed the snow aside, clearing the street down to the asphalt. It moved slowly past the library.

“If we follow behind the plow you might be able to save your shoes,” he said.

“Or else we’ll have to come back and borrow Wilma’s spray.” He smiled at the trace of laughter in her voice.

He opened the door for her. The air smelled frosty and cold, but close to her the scent of vanilla and spice captured his attention. He helped her off the curb.

No way would she be able to navigate the slick surface wearing those boots with all she carried. He slung her computer bag over his shoulder and took half of her research materials.

A tentative step and she slid on the slippery street. He put his free arm around her and tucked her into his side for safekeeping. “Ready?” he asked her. She nodded and they followed the snowplow, creating a small parade.

“I was thinking about what you mentioned earlier regarding a woman’s sexuality. Men think differently than women,” she said. “A woman’s sexual turn-on is more complicated than a man’s.” He fumbled with the books he held. Her words froze in his brain.

“You mean women don’t think about sex as…enthusiastically as men?” This wasn’t new to him. Every guy knew women weren’t instantly turned on. But he’d never philosophized about or discussed sex. Not with a woman.

Beth’s voice dropped to an intimate whisper. With her tucked close to his side, her fragrance, and talking sexual attraction had him breathing hard. He wanted to take her in his arms and find out how soft and delicious her lips tasted.

“Oh, women are enthusiastic but we need… a plot, like a novel,” she blurted.

The idea clicked in his mind. “Ah, romance, a build-up—”

“Yes. It’s the anticipation, even for a casual encounter.”

Now it made sense. Clinically speaking, the build-up gives a woman time to receive and interpret the message on an intellectual level, then send the signal to her body parts for arousal.

“I understand. A woman has to connect with a man to have sex, while for a man, sex is the connection.” She stopped and gazed at him with those big brown eyes. He wondered if his signal was getting through to her. His heart pounded against his chest loud enough for her to hear. A wind swept down the street and she shivered.

“Jeez, you’re cold.” He pulled her closer and moved them on.

They entered the Inn. The blast of heat from the fireplace defrosted him as he stamped the snow off his shoes. She did the same. He stared at her boots.

“They seem fine,” she said. He escorted her upstairs, still carrying her computer bag and books.

“I had a great afternoon. You don’t have to walk me to my room,” she said as they climbed the stairs. He gazed at her flushed face, not sure if it was pink from the cold or the closeness they established.

As she opened her door, he pulled the computer off his shoulder and placed it inside. Before he could say a word, she put her lips on his. They were soft and inviting. Better than he anticipated. He deepened the kiss not knowing where this would lead and not caring until the sound of feet tramping up the stairs reached his ears. They broke apart.

“I better go. Thanks.” She slipped inside. The latch closed with a click.

SUMMER’S HEATING UP!

After a much-needed revamping of The Final Chapter, resident sweetie Olivia Baxter has reopened the bookstore as A New Chapter–and launched Serendipity, a metaphysical shop next door. But that’s not all she’s been up to. The grapevine tells me that cutie Max Porter is back in town, and they’ve made an intimate connection. Sounds intriguing. After all, there’s nothing better for New Beginnings than young love…

* * *

Rumor has it Christa Morrow skipped town on that hunky Jeremy Pearce months ago. Heard he wasn’t so faithful. Now she’s back…and I love to see a man grovel. There’s something strange in the air around these two. A little magick? Hocus-pocus, and maybe they’ll be a couple again. Can’t wait to watch. Christa might just be able to get Jeremy back and Under Her Spell.

* * *

Did you hear Beth Holmes and JD Watson are in town? Will sparks fly? Only if it’s the ones between these two lovebirds. Pick up autographed copies of their latest best sellers at their tent. Now those two should craft a book together. He writes compelling mystery and her steamy stuff is to die for. Adventure on the horizon? Who knows…maybe The Game’s AFoot.

* * *

I’ll be keeping my eye on Augusta Moore, owner of Wags and Walks, who’ll have a tent set up for the animal shelter during the July Fourth festivities. Why isn’t she attached? She’s irresistible with those furry cuties she helps get adopted. And don’t forget to cheer for our very own Evan Washburn in the parade. The hunky Marine can save me any day. Who doesn’t love a man in uniform? He’s throwing his hat in the ring for town council, too. Havenport could benefit from a Hometown Hero. Hmm…sounds like a match made in Havenport heaven…

* * *

Enjoy the July 4th parade and celebration, including vendor tents, food and Mayor Owen to kick things off. Fireworks display over the harbor starting at 10PM. (weather permitting)
Happy July 4th!
~Candy

Excerpt

“I don’t know why I let the town council talk me into co-chairing the July Fourth celebration.” Her biting tone wasn’t meant to deceive him. She was very aware why she agreed. The offer at Christmas played to her wounded ego.

“They convinced you Beth Alexander would draw more people than last year’s co-chair. Even Jean agreed.”

“Yeah, easy for Jean to say. She’s my agent with no idea what it takes to run an event like this. More to the point, she’s not in Havenport herding cats. So why am I doing this?”

“Because you love it. You whip up people with your passion. That’s how you convinced me to do the book signing with you at the fair tomorrow.”

“If I remember correctly, I ‘whipped you up with my passion’ quite nicely before you left. You didn’t complain.” Images of their last night together flashed in her mind. They’d spent the day at the beach.

He wore his diving brief, which left nothing to the imagination. His broad shoulders, well-defined abs, and trim waist were romance-cover worthy. Dark wavy hair set off hazel eyes, which held a look of warmth and desire. Their lovemaking was more than heart-stopping strokes and touches. Much more. She leaned her forehead against the cool glass of the porch window to counter the heat threatening to burn her to a crisp.

“You still there, or did I hit a dead zone?”

“I’m here. Lost in the vision of ‘whipping you up.’” She stepped to the side table, breaking the conjured spell, and took a long drink of lemonade. The tartness quenched her thirst, but didn’t satisfy her other craving. That had to wait until Jarred got home.

“Yeah, me, too.” His voice rumbled with a soft, teasing laugh that he usually combined with a smart-ass Bruce Willis smirk.

She needed to get her mind on something else. She was so past mooning over him like a love-struck teenager. Her inner teen giggled. No, she was definitely a love-struck thirtysomething.

Ghosts Take Over Havenport!

Not real ghosts, don’t be silly people! Halloween is right around the corner and folks are gearing up for the annual Halloween ball at Havencroft Manor. I know I have my costume all picked out, how about you? Lets hope Mrs. X can come up with something new this year, she almost split the seams of her Naughty Nurse costume last year. Yikes!

***

The Witching Hour will soon be upon us—anyone think Havencroft Manor’s most famous dearly departed will stop by for a visit? Such a haunting tale of love and betrayal makes this gossip columnist stand up and take notice. Keep reading, and we’ll take a stroll down memory lane to find out all the juicy details.

***

The room above Serendipity is open for business. Looks like they kicked off rentals with a séance on behalf of our favorite philanthropist. Rumor has it, he has a ghost problem. Some say he’s trying to get rid of the problem, while others are convinced he’s trying to bring The Ghost of You back to life. With the Goddess’s help, I guess anything’s possible.

***

Sorry, ladies, but looks like our hunky veterinarian may be off the market soon. A certain divorcee was hired to spruce up his bachelor pad, but from the look of things, my money’s on them turning it into a family home instead. Should be cozy with their latest rescue dog and the soldier’s spirit that tagged along. So long as A Spirit’s Bond doesn’t stand in their way, should be fun to watch.

***

They say the new widow in town has a way with ghosts. In fact, one may have followed her into town. To help or hinder? Hard to tell. Maybe the ruggedly handsome carpenter fixing up Havencroft Manor will find a way to help out a Kindred Spirit.

***

Come to think of it, maybe I spoke too soon about those ghosts.

Don’t forget to stock up on candy and have a Happy Halloween!

Meet Beth Alexander (Christmas in Havenport by @RuthACasie) #romance #TuesdayBookBlog

christmas-in-havenport

It’s our great pleasure to have Beth Alexander (Ruth A. Casie’s I’ll Be Home for Christmas in Christmas in Havenport) appear on the POTL Blog today. She’s one of our favorite residents of Havenport. She agreed to sit down with MRS N for a candid character interview. Take it away, Beth:

Hi, I’m Beth Alexander, a New York Times, USA Today best-selling author. I want to thank you for inviting me to speak to you today.

How did you first meet your writer?

I met Ruth A. Casie at a book signing in a Bergen County New Jersey bookstore. We were both signing our new releases. We had a great time discussing the industry and finding out about each other. I look back on that discussion often. I knew she wrote historical fantasy, but had no idea she had branched out into contemporary romance. She was telling me about some of her concerns about changing genres. That turned out to be exactly what I did by the end of I’ll Be Home for Christmas.

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

Actually, no. I write books. I’m not in them. I will say that this story shows you who I am, warts and all.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?

Oh, the dialog. The repartee between me and Jarred is priceless, especially in the library scene. We were talking about the different way men and women react to stress and sex. I still can’t believe how open and frank I was, nor the low timber of his voice and his eyes. Do you mind if I have a drink of water. It’s hot in here.

What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?

I love to brainstorm new stories and think of ways to put my hero and heroine in danger. There are times when I have no idea how I’m going to get them out on the other side. There are times when they take the pen right out of my hand. I don’t know how they do it but they come up with the answer. At those times I’m simply their scribe.

Do you like the way the book ended?

I find my true love and resurrect my sinking writing career. I wouldn’t have Ruth change a word.

Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

After the story released we went into discussions with our publisher, Timeless Scribes. I presented a story concept for a sequel. Timeless Scribes and Ms. Casie liked it so much they encouraged me to move forward with it. The Game’s A’Foot, part of Welcome to Havenport, released last May. I’ve been speaking to Ms. Casie about a third story and possibly putting all three stories together. The working titles is Love Between the Sheets. I’m trying to convince her to release it this summer. I think I’ve almost got her convinced.

What is your least favorite characteristic your writer has attributed to you?

I had been snarky on a social media chat that went viral. My fan base abandoned me. Let’s just say my reaction wasn’t pretty, nor something I want to remember.

What do you wear when you go to sleep?

Hmmm, nothing.

What is your most prized possession?

My Jimmy Choos!

What do you like most about where you live?

I live in Havenport, Rhode Island, a small town on the coast. It’s very similar to Newport. I’ve lived here all my life. My parents have retired to Florida and gave the house to me, my two brothers and my sister as a vacation home. Vacations became only Christmas. So I bought my brothers and sister out and now live there year round. They still invade for Christmas which suites me just fine.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy fall Sunday?

If Jarred is home and not giving lectures in New York City, he’s glued to the television watching a game and I’m right there next to him. When he’s away is like to catch up on my reading.

Thank you so much for having me today. I had a great time speaking with you. I hope your readers enjoy Ruth A. Casie’s I’ll Be Home for Christmas, one of five short stories in Christmas in Havenport.  But don’t forget to look for more about me and Jarred in her story, The Game’s A’Foot in Welcome to Havenport.

TheGuardiansWitchFinal

Title: The Guardian’s Witch

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

England, 1290

Lord Alex Stelton can’t resist a challenge, especially one with a prize like this: protect a castle on the Scottish border for a year, and it’s his. Desperate for land of his own, he’ll do anything to win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the rumored witch who lives there.

Feared and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she’d never marry, but she is drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.

Despite his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can’t get the alluring Lisbeth out of his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him. Realizing they’ll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.

Excerpt:

The berries Lisbeth had gathered tumbled forgotten from her hands. A tremor touched her lips while the vision slammed behind her eyes. She didn’t doubt the vision’s truth. Sometimes a bright light, warm and comforting, accompanied the vision; other times the wind howled, cold and disturbing. Today, panic clearly filled the air.

She spun around trying to pinpoint a direction and abruptly stopped. Facing south, she licked her lips nervously and tasted the sweetness of fresh water. A rushing sound burst in her ears. The river. Her head snapped east toward the river path and she ran. As she careened down the narrow trail, the outstretched branches tugged at her dress, pulled off her shawl and clawed at her face and arms. She took no notice. The cadence of her footfalls beat out a mantra, not him, not him, not him. She rushed on faster, mumbling enchanted words under her breath.

She exploded out of the forest and stood on the riverbank as the bridge gave way, sending the horse and rider plunging into the angry current. Swiftly the horse surfaced and headed for shore with an empty saddle. She stood on the bank, still mumbling as she scanned the river until she glimpsed a clear red aura shining deep in its middle. Her relief was momentary when the blackness began to creep in. There wasn’t much time.

Quickly she pulled off her heavy dress and, wearing only her chemise, dove into the river. Save him was her only thought. Down she plunged kicking hard against the current. The usually clear water, now choked with mud, churned with debris. She screamed the words in her head and made her demands. In response, the current slowed and as the mud began to settle, a lifeless hand beckoned to her from below.

“Intoxicating and Swoon-Worthy” The Highlander’s English Woman by @RuthACasie #romance

thehighlandersenglishwoman300-1

Title: The Highlander’s English Woman

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance

Book Blurb:

Laura Reynolds is in love with her long-time friend, Jamie Maxwell Collins. She adores his playful sense of humor, caring nature as well as his strong sense of family and honor.

Jamie lives across the border in Scotland. Outwardly carefree, he hides a dark secret. He can’t involve Laura in this deception. He can’t give her hope for a future together.

Laura stumbles upon Jamie’s secret. In her heart of hearts she knows Jamie is innocent. Their relationship in tatters and with no hope of reconciliation, she plays a deadly game to exonerate Jamie, she agrees to a political marriage. She has no idea the entire game has been orchestrated by her future husband, Jamie’s greatest enemy.

My Review:

Betrayal. Deception. Love. Power. Something is amiss and The Maxwell calls on his most trusted warrior, Jamie Maxwell Collins, to root out the perpetrators before The Maxwell Ghost strikes again.

In the continuation of the short story, The Maxwell Ghost, Ruth A. Casie tells the complete story of Laura, Jamie and the ghost(s) haunting the castle of The Maxwell. If you read The Maxwell Ghost, you’ll be familiar with the first part of this book. But please don’t skip the first half of the story. Casie adds intricate detail to the original story and trust me, it’s worth a re-read. It’ll suck you into Laura’s and Jamie’s romance as well as what else is happening.

Back to the story…

Laura agrees to accompany Jamie, on her mother’s behalf, to help the restless spirits before their time is up. She, like her mother and sister, have certain “gifts” and she knows she can right the wrong. But all is not as it appears to be and it may be Laura the hidden villain is after, not The Maxwell.

Jamie knows he must end things with Laura because his enemy is vicious and would think nothing of torturing Jamie through Laura. So, he makes a clean break and shatters Laura’s heart, although his pain is much worse than hers. He goes undercover to uncover the plot against The Maxwell and even goes so far as to “pretend” to be in love with one of women associated with the plot to overthrow The Maxwell.

Laura, in an effort to get over Jamie, befriends an old friend who falls in love with her. He proposes marriage and seeing no other choice, aligns herself into a political marriage. Laura is playing a deadly game and all those she loves may pay the consequences. Can Jamie save her or is all lost?

I loved this historical romance and while it was written years after The Guardian’s Witch, this prequel’s continuity is exceptional. Casie blends the supernatural with historically accurate romance with precision and flair. The plot has several twists and surprises (I won’t reveal any here) which I wasn’t expecting. The monk scene is priceless!

If you’re a fan of historical medieval romance set in both Scotland and England with dashes of the supernatural, pick up this book right now! It’s a gem and I highly recommend it! Can’t wait for the next installment in the Stelton Legacy by Ruth A. Casie!

This is a standalone, as is The Guardian’s Witch, but I recommend you read this first.

Favorite Character: Laura. Strong, independent and full of passion, Laura knows what she wants and goes after it. She’s in love with her childhood friend, Jamie, and when he pushes her away for another woman, her pain is acute.

Favorite Quote:

He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

Excerpt:

“Hold me. Don’t let me go,” Laura said. She nuzzled his neck and sank into his strong embrace. “Love me,” she whispered in his ear. His muscles tensed in response. She wanted his arms around her, his lips touching hers.

They sank on the bed and held each other close. She was afraid to let him go, afraid the emptiness would find her, afraid of losing him, again. With an unending thirst, she focused on his mouth, the shape of his lips, the kisses that they promised.

His hand stroked the side of her body from her breast to her thigh, claiming them. One stroke of her breast and she tugged on his shirt. He didn’t hesitate. He obliged her and pulled it off. Her hand played down the hard planes of his chest. Her eyes widened at the sight of the scars on his chest.

“These weren’t here.” She traced them with her finger.

He stopped her hand and brought it to his lips. “Fighting for The Maxwell comes with a price. I don’t want to think of the Maxwell.” He kissed her fingertips. “I thought I lost you forever.”

She closed her eyes and reveled in the tingling sensation racing through her body and put her head on his shoulder.

He opened her bodice and stroked the top of her chest then, with trembling hands, touched her breasts. A low moan escaped her lips.

Jamie bent and kissed each breast.

He ignited a flame inside her that set her on fire. Delicious shudders pulsed through her. She pulled his head away and kissed him.

Her fingers traced the scars and the muscles of his chest danced at the light touch. “Where did you get this one?”

“In a fight with the English.” His rapt gaze focused on her face.

Her lips brushed against his skin.  His skin deckled in gooseflesh. Her finger moved on. “And this one?”

“A reiver attack,” his voice was husky and seductive.

The hooded passion in his eyes encouraged her. She kissed the scar and moved on. The tips of her fingers traced down his chest. “Here is another.” The scar snaked below his navel. Another kiss. Her fingers trailed down further.

He pulled her up and rolled on top of her. Her body instinctively arched against his. “You are mine.” His warm breath brushed against her face. Two heartbeats passed. “Do you hear me? You’re mine,” he said more urgently.

“Yes.” Her voice an intimate whisper. His lips tugged into a sideways grin.

His smile that made her bones go limp. It was his magic.

Excerpt

“He opened the cemetery gate and made his way to the small building where the 9th century remains of William the Brave rested. In the building was a hidden passage that led inside the castle. A dangerous place for boys to play. He and Richard prided themselves on being the only people aware these tunnels existed. Forgotten over the centuries, it had taken them weeks to clean out the debris and shore it up to make it usable.

The hair on the back of his neck stood. Someone was with him inside the cemetery. He crouched behind a tombstone. In the distance, a dark shadow proceeded along the path.

Jamie took stock of the man as he made his way to the Reynolds’ family graves. He thought at first Reeve came to pay his respect to Richard, but the form was all wrong. This shadow was bigger, more agile. The man stopped and waited. For whom? For what?

Jamie moved for a closer look. His brushed against a tombstone and knocked loose pebbles that rested on the top to the ground. In the complete silence, the cascade of stones sounded like boulders echoing in a valley.

In an easy, elegant move, the man drew his sword. No, this wasn’t Reeve. Jamie did the same.

The darkening shadows made it impossible for Jamie to identify who he fought. That didn’t stop either man. His attacker put him on the defense. Jamie retreated in a matter of seconds.

Jamie and the shadow parried and lunged. Evenly matched, neither gave signs of tiring. Several times he almost had the man, only to have him bound over an obstacle and come back for more.

Just like…

“For a moment I thought you fought like Lord Richard,” Jamie said. The man answered with a barrage of strikes.

But Jamie held his ground. He fought stroke for stroke until they came into a close battle position, the hilts of their swords locked against their chests. Clouds moved and the man’s face was revealed under the moonlight.

Jamie dropped his sword and froze. His heart pounded. The man threw his head back and laughed.

“Richard?”

The laughter subsided. Richard put his arm around Jamie and squeezed him close. “I wonder if Father has any ale? How I would love to taste it one more time.”

Happy Holidays from USA Today Bestselling Author @RuthACasie #guestpost #holidays #books

sweet-potato-souffle
Sweet Potato Souffle

For me, the holiday season begins with Thanksgiving. Those left overs are finally gone. Just when I’ve recovered from Thanksgiving it’s time to plan for Christmas and Chanukah.

Paul and I are empty nesters. Our daughters, Staci and Cori, and their families live about thirty minutes away. Our son, Ari and his girlfriend Kate, live in Boston. Each holiday, they all move back home for the weekend. They decided ten years ago, when Ari went away to college in Boston, that we would spend every holiday at our house—all together for the entire weekend. I didn’t argue.

brisket
Beef Brisket

It’s lots of planning and cooking but there are no surprises. They crave the same menu at each holiday, beef brisket and roast leg of lamb (and I mustn’t forget the mint jelly), sweet potato soufflé topped with marshmallows, noodle pudding, salad, roasted green beans and Brussel sprouts. It doesn’t stop there. For breakfast the following morning I make french toast made with challah, an egg bread.

Thanksgiving is Friday at our house. I didn’t ever want to spend Thanksgiving without my children and rather than have them choose whether they spend the day here one year and at in-laws the following year, I opted to celebrate on Friday.

This year, Cori and Chris have a new house and decided they would host both families on Thanksgiving Day. I thought I was ‘home free,’ no cooking. Even though I was bringing the sweet potato soufflé (with the marshmallows) that Chris’ brother and sister LOVE, I was quickly told that Friday at our house was still happening. I really didn’t mind.

Everyone arrived here early. They helped in the kitchen. My granddaughter, Olivia helped bake some cookies and took charge of making the place cards. My grandson, Alex arranged the cards on the table. Cori arrived prepared to make her signature dish, butternut squash soup. While the roast finished, she’s whipping it together. Staci brought mashed potatoes and Kate arrived with a pumpkin pie, brownies and cookies.

Thank goodness they all came with their own plastic containers to take the left overs when they leave. I’ve been known to make extra portions so they don’t leave empty handed.

After dinner Uncle Ari had a headstand battle with Olivia. Alex decided to entertain us with his air guitar and karaoke. We never laughed so hard. We spent lots of time watching movies, playing games and eating.

coris-baby-shower

Saturday was Cori’s baby shower. Her first baby is due mid-February. Staci and Chris’ sister have been planning and making things for months. Since we are all tired from cooking, they had the shower at a catering hall. The afternoon was perfect. The gifts were lovely. Cori was radiant.

Sunday was our big brunch. We divyed up the left overs and everyone packed up. Cori needed to go home and rest. Staci had lesson plans to write and she needed to get the kids to bed early for school. Ari and Kate went back to Boston, but not before planning to bring Kate’s dog Kyia with them when they come back.

It’s quiet now and time to plan. We’ve been online ordering holiday presents. We found a great karaoke machine for Alex. We only have three weeks before the kids will be back and we can do it all over again. Maybe I’ll change up the menu and make chicken or salmon. Naw, why change a good thing. It’s perfect just the way it is.

Happy Holiday everyone!

Gossip with a snarky, tart bite…

Ghosts Take Over Havenport!

Not real ghosts, don’t be silly people! Halloween is right around the corner and folks are gearing up for the annual Halloween ball at Havencroft Manor. I know I have my costume all picked out, how about you? Let’s hope Mrs.

They say the new widow in town has a way with ghosts. In fact, one may have followed her into town. To help or hinder? Hard to tell. Maybe the ruggedly handsome carpenter fixing up Havencroft Manor will find a way to help out a Kindred Spirit.

Come to think of it, maybe I spoke too soon about those ghosts.

Don’t forget to stock up on candy and have a Happy Halloween!

My Review:

Halloween is right around the corner and the residents of Havenport are in for some spooky encounters. Four emotional stories told straight from the heart.

The Ghost of You – In the genre of paranormal romance, this story nails it on all levels. Imagine falling in love with a ghost in your youth but one day out of the blue, she just vanished. Years later, you can sense her again but what does she want? This is Dean’s story and it was so moving, I cried a little. I connected immediately with both Lila and Dean and the ending tugged at my heartstrings. Praise the Goddess!

The Witching Hour – This story, by far, is the best one in the box set. Rachel has returned to Havenport, for one last glimpse at Havenport Manor. She’s lost something precious, a locket, and as she searches all over the Manor, memories flood her. Just when all is lost, she discovers she must forgive the one person who’s betrayed her. Casie is one of my favorite authors and she has the uncanny ability to suck you into a story with an emotional response. The ending moved me to tears.

A Spirit’s Bond – Take one book boyfriend vet, a divorcee determined to make her own way plus a military rescue dog and you get an addictive yet spooky story. I loved watching the budding romance and the mystery behind the sudden appearance of a rescue dog. I loved the ending (and no I won’t give it away). You have to read it for yourself and discover just how powerful a bond is between a soldier and his dog.

Kindred Spirit – Someone is haunting a widow. Who is it and what can they want? Is it a message of love or evil in intent? While I understand many widows struggle with loneliness after their beloved has passed away, I find the premise of falling in love with someone else hard to relate to. My beliefs on soulmates differ than the author’s but it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story. I enjoyed the hauntings and the ending was pleasing. A wonderful mature romance.

Excerpt:

He and Laura were targets in the swift moving water. He needed to get farther downstream, away from the marshland. He cursed himself for worrying about her propriety rather than her safety.

The sound of splashing from up river grew closer.

“Wrap your arms around my waist and try not to lose your seat.”

They reached the far bank and raced along the river, the raiders not far behind.

“You need to let me down,” she yelled at him in the wind. “You can go faster without me.”

“Keep down,” he said between clenched teeth and pulled his sword. They raced on, the land a blur as they flew by.

The spray of water from his horse’s pounding hooves turned into small clouds of dust as they came out of the marshland into the meadow. His horse couldn’t maintain this speed much longer. They reached the area where the river dog-legged to the right. A dense fog hung low in the forest. Jamie let loose his battle cry then veered into the woods.

They raced on. Out of the mist his men charged and dashed past them set to do battle with the reivers close behind them.

Jamie and Laura raced on. Laura glanced over his shoulder.

“Rider behind us.” Jamie urged his horse on faster. If they didn’t stop soon, the poor animal would collapse.

Another glance. The man was gaining ground. Think, she told herself. Sunlight bounced off Jamie’s sword. Could it work? It had to.

“Put your sword on your left shoulder then make a quick half-turn to your left and face the rider. Don’t stop, charge,” Laura said as she lay as close to his horse as possible to give Jamie more room to maneuver.

“Don’t look. It’s not going to be a pretty sight.”

She closed her eyes tight.

Jamie followed her instructions. The sound of the horse’s hooves echoed in her head as he completed the maneuver and his horse sprang forward. With the full weight of the charging horse behind his sword, he hit the raider in the chest. The man fell to the ground. His disembodied head rolled somewhere in the mist.

Jamie turned his horse again and continued into the woods. Laura sat up. The trees sped by. She began to panic at the tall hedge row that loomed in front of them.

Their direction didn’t waver. Rather than slow down, the animal gathered speed. Jamie crushed her in front of him and held her head against his chest.

“I won’t let anything happen to you. Hold me.”

The sensation of flying through the air frightened and exhilarated her at the same time. For a moment, her heart stopped. How they landed without the horse falling or them being thrown was beyond her, but they did.

The horse slowed to a halt, lathered and blowing hard. His men were soon with them.

Writing Partners: How @RuthACasie Became a Best-Seller #amwriting #POTLReads

pen-and-ink

While writing is a singular thing, input and brainstorming with like-minded spirits is not only enjoyable but mind expanding. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come across a plot issue that I couldn’t see my way through. At times, it takes an objective viewpoint, someone who isn’t tied to the story or characters to get me out of the weeds and into ‘the light.’

I have three close writing friends that have become my writing partners. We eagerly read each other’s manuscripts, brainstormed when we wrote ourselves into a corner and talked each other off the ledge when we wanted to give up and burn the pages. We are a strong but mighty group. Each of us focused on a different sub-genre. This isn’t usually the way a critique forms, but remember, we were friends first. For our group, each author brought a different strength ranging from conflict identification, point-of-view development, character growth, and voice. Their insight worked as well for my medieval romances as it did for Lita Harris’ women’s fiction, Emma Kaye’s paranormal romances, and Nicole S. Patrick’s military romances.

Once our stories were polished we each queried agents and editors, pitched at conferences and cheered each other on. We celebrated our publishing successes with wine and chocolate.

We wanted more. We enjoyed working with each other and decided to augment our writing by self-publishing short stories. With the help of Julie Rowe, who taught us the art of short story writing, we put together our first anthology. Because we each write in different genres we decided that some ‘thing’ needed to tie the stories together. We decided each story had a keepsake. When we were finished, we proudly titled our work, Timeless Keepsakes and published the Christmas anthology November, 2013.

books

Project Delivered! The thing was, we had such a great time working on this project that we decided we wanted to do it again. We got a better understanding of the industry and saw that our diverse sub-genres in one book were outside the norm.

We decided our characters would all meet in a specific place so we could mention them in each other’s stories. While our stories are individual and the characters in them the author’s, this format required us to work together— closely. We bounced scenes and characters off each other. For me, I had to develop a contemporary voice.

Our second book, Timeless Escapes was great to work on. We met at Nicole’s house and over homemade crumb cake, wine and chocolate we each developed our stories. We looked for places where we could stumble upon, meet up or encounter each other’s characters.

While we couldn’t always get together we developed a weekly Hangout call and at any time someone would reach out to do sprints (we used Chatzy.com)

After the fifth anthology we found we had difficulty keeping to the short story word count. Our characters had more to say. Writing novellas was our next step.

tsp-7-books

With our loosely connected stories, we thought a small town setting would work well and created Havenport, Rhode Island, a Newportish type of town.  This project has been awesome from creating a map of Havenport to Candy Apples, the town gossip who announces each of our stories.

We’ve grown as authors over the three years and as business women. We realized we needed to manage the finances and have an equal stake which led to the development of our business, Timeless Scribes Publishing LLC.

As equal partners, we each brought our expertise to the company, Emma our production officer and proof reader, Lita our financial officer, Nicole vendor management officer, and me marketing officer.

The company is an outlet where each of us can self-publish our own books. We work off a contract with the company and get royalty statements.

Our newest book is a collection of novellas. The stories all take place in Havenport and each one has a ghost just in time for Halloween.

Shazam! Magick is in the Air and @RuthACasie Offers Guidance #magic #POTLReads #Halloween

Shazam!

Spells and spellcasting. The very first spell I clearly remember is salagadoola mechicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. Put them together and what do you get? Cinderella! A magic coach, horses, a footman, glass slippers and a beautiful ball gown and let’s not forget the handsome prince.

What makes the fairy-godmother’s words a spell? A spell is much like a prayer said with a great deal of intent, focus, and will that gives words (or nonsense ones) new meanings. Deborah Blake, an authority on Wiccans, explains that taking a shower can be a magical event. Your intent or goal is to wash away the stress of the day. You focus on the water pouring down on you and visualize your stress being washed away. Your will is to apply energy to the task. Along with the words she uses to increase the impact of the magick “Water, water, wash away all the stress of the day,” your shower becomes magickal.

So, is Cinderella’s fairy-godmother invoking magick? Her fairy-godmother cast her spell speaking an incantation to create a specific outcome. She clearly imagined what she wanted. She intended the magic coach, horse, etc. to all appear. She was keening focused on the results. And through sheer will she used all the energy at her disposal to make it happen.

magic

What is a spell? Spells are written or spoken words together with set actions sometimes using objects, all with the intent to bring about specific results. The words are the important thing. The actions and objects are used to help the spellcaster concentrate and amplify their request. They use what they feel works well for them candles, herbs, oils, gems and other things. Color, phases of the moon and the day of the week may also play an important part of the spell.

Are there any rules for using magick? Deborah Blake, in her book, The Goddess is in the Details by Llewellyn Publications, July 2009, lays out the seven beliefs at the heart of being a witch.

  1. Harm none. The Wiccan Rede says, “An it harm none, do as ye will.” While this sounds simple, whatever you do make certain you harm no one. That includes yourself and anyone else. She pointed out quite clearly that downstream affects are really unknown. This rule is a guideline and a reminder that the intent should always be to do good.
  2. Do not interfere with free will. Everyone is responsible for their own actions and should not interfere with the actions of others. Not every witch (other regular person for that matter) seems to believe in this.
  3. What you put out (into the universe) is what you get back. The Law of Return. I believe very strongly in this rule and I’m not a witch. I call it paying it forward. I truly believe that if you give of yourself will come back to you threefold.
  4. As above, so below: Words have power. Witches believe that words have power. It is the reason why spells are said out loud—to announce your intention to the universe. They also believe symbols can be used to heighten the effects of words and can stand for objects or ideas. Sometimes they use candles, stones, water, wine, or anything that will help connect them to the object or idea. As above, so below means they not only have the power to effect change through symbolism and their connection with the universe, but they must also be careful with their words and thoughts. Ms. Blake gave a great example. If words have power, and you get back what you put out, think what would happen when you say, “I hate you.”
  5. Magick is real and witches can use it to bring about positive change. With combination of their belief that they can bring about positive change and the power of words and symbols, they use intent and focus to alter their world.
  6. We are part of nature. All Pagans have one thing in common—they respect nature and believe they are a part of it, not above it. While traditional religions view humans as superior, Pagans see themselves as guardians. Witches worship the mother earth, the nature goddess. They follow the cycle of the seasons and strive to connect to nature and stay close to their primordial gods.
  7. The divine is in everything, including us. Pagans believe in the old gods and goddesses and that there is an element of the divine in everything. This is at the heart of what it means to be a witch. This connection to the universe and to the divine gives witches both power and responsibility. It connects them to every other living being.

So, let me leave you with this. Find a comfortable place to sit where you won’t be disturbed. Light a white candle, take a sip of red wine, hold the book you’re reading, and say:

The winds are still,

as the words unfold.

Strong is the will,

as the story is told.

Peace fills the room,

and carries you away.

Imagination in bloom,

the rest of the day.

Now sit back, open your book and enjoy the adventure. Happy Reading!

Title: Once Upon a Haunted Castle

Author: Eliza Knight, Kathryn LeVeque, Terri Brisbin, Madeline Martin, Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy, Scottish, Highlander,

Book Blurb:

Welcome to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland where ghosts inhabit haunted castles and can even help out forbidden lovers when they wish. Here are five original novellas from bestselling and award-winning authors Kathryn LeVeque, Eliza Knight, Terri Brisbin, Madeline Martin and Ruth A. Casie that will take you to some of their favorite castles to meet their favorite ghosts.

In Eliza Knight’s LAIRD OF SHADOWS, a decade old vow and an attack of Vikings brings Lady Elle Cam’béal to Dunstaffnage Castle seeking the help of the new, handsome, provocative laird with a beastly temper—Beiste MacDougall. As battles and treachery rain down upon them, Beiste and Elle find an unlikely ally in a ghost, and discover that a few stolen moments of passion can bring light from the shadows…

In Kathryn Le Veque’s DEEP INTO DARKNESS, Findlater Castle in the Scottish Highlands becomes a place of mystery and doom for Jamison Munro and his wife, Havilland. Traveling across the highlands one dark and stormy night, they stumble upon a lonely Host in Findlater Castle, a pathetic soul waiting for his wife to return to him. It is a terrible tale of a tragic love story that the Host tells the travelers but when Havilland becomes curious about mysterious tapping sounds that go on in the middle of the night, she soon realizes the danger that she and her husband are in. It becomes a race against time for Havilland to free a trapped spirit and save both their lives in the process.

In Terri Brisbin’s UPON A MISTY SKYE, Alexander MacDonald and Isabel MacLeod were not supposed to meet or fall in love or marry. Now that they have, both of their parents plan to separate them, by any means possible. But the ghost of Duntulm Castle has other plans for the forbidden lovers and those who stand in the way of true love.

In Madeline Martin’s A GHOSTLY TALE OF FORBIDDEN LOVE, Gavin MacDuff is a laird with a cruel and bitter aunt he’s sworn to protect. Senara is the new lady’s maid at Castle of Park and has sacrificed everything for the betterment of her family. Their paths tangle and lead to a road of hidden longing and secret passion – all of which is threatened by the power of one ghost who is fixed on revenge.

In Ruth A. Casie’s THE MAXWELL GHOST, traitors, deception, murders and ghosts run rampant at Caerlaverock Castle. Jamie Collins, a man of reality not magic, serves Lord Herbert in exchange for his own farm.  Laura Reynolds, the Herbert’s distant cousin comes to the castle to solve the murders and put the ghost to rest. The two, long-time friends find their destinies intertwined with hidden passions, but all is in jeopardy when Laura becomes the murderer’s next target. Jamie will find he needs some ghostly assistance to save Laura and declare his love.

My Review:

I’m a big fan of Ruth A. Casie and when she revealed she’s a part of this boxset, I was thrilled to read it. Just imagine: blending ghosts/spirits with Highland Romance from five of today’s bestselling authors. I was familiar with Casie but had not had the pleasure of reading the other authors. Here’s my short review for each story:

LAIRD OF SHADOWS – Vikings attack and Lady Elle has no choice but to seek sanctuary at Dunstaffnage Castle. Beiste, the new laird, is gruff and has a horrid temper but Elle can’t resist those haunting eyes of his. War is at their doorstep and deception surrounds Beiste and Elle like a thick fog. Can Beiste find Elle’s brother before it’s too late and can Elle trust her heart when it comes to love? A brilliant, sweeping Highland Romance that I didn’t want to end.

DEEP INTO DARKNESS – A new take on Poe’s classic poem, The Raven. A couple seeks refuge away from the storm at what appears to be a deserted castle. But all is not as it appears and Havilland must release the spirits or else she and her husband will become doomed, like the rest who have visited Findlater Castle. A spooky, intense ghost story that even Poe would find intriguing.

UPON A MISTY SKYE – A forbidden love by warring families is at the center of this story and I found myself comparing it to Romeo and Juliet. Two fathers separating this destined couple for their own gain and when it seems hopeless, a ghost becomes the couple’s best ally. A gritty, Medieval romance I enjoyed. A hair dark but you’ll love the historical accuracy.

A GHOSTLY TALE OF FORBIDDEN LOVE – Continuing on with the forbidden love theme, this tale has a laird and a maid falling in love. They both know it’s not proper but can’t help themselves. But when a ghost seeks revenge, Gavin must choose who he loves most. There’s plenty to like in this story but my favorite character in this story is Senara.

THE MAXWELL GHOST – Long-time friends Jamie and Laura team up to solve a double-murder. Jamie is a man of logic and doesn’t believe in ghosts, no matter what the residents of Caerlaverock Castle say. Laura believes in her gift and when her cousin, Lord Herbert, asks for assistance, she goes on behalf of her mother. Sparks fly between Jamie and Laura but both Laura and Jamie keep their feelings secret. It’s only when Laura’s life is in jeopardy does Jamie see the truth about his burning love for her and the identity of the murderer. This is a prequel to Casie’s The Guardian’s Witch (which I highly recommend). Casie sucked me in from the first paragraph and I actually cried out when it ended. I want more! Jamie is my favorite character in this story.

Favorite Quote from The Maxwell Ghost:

“How. Dare. You. Stop. Me.” She spat out each word. The men were silent, like reprimanded schoolboys. “I’ll make sure to tell my father how Lord Bryce takes liberties with Glen Kirk property or should I tell him a Ravencroft patrol lost their way in the forest and I needed to provide them with directions?”

Scarlet stains appeared on the leader’s cheek. Laura was aware of the enemy she’d made, but with good cause. The Mitchell men looked at each other, not knowing what to do.

Caerlaverock Castle: The Maxwell Ghost by @RuthACasie #romance #Highlander

caerlaverock-castle-aerial

“It pulls at my heart with its beauty and purpose. It represents all I hold dear in a person, if that’s possible, heart, soul and strength.”    Laura Reynolds, The Maxwell Ghost

I knew I found the right setting for my medieval ghost story when I saw a picture of Caerlaverock Castle.

Reading Caerlaverock’s history I understood why the Maxwell family fought to hold it and why their enemies had to destroy it.

Caerlaverock Castle is a moated castle on the southern coast of Scotland in the Dumfries.  The unique equilateral triangular design and beauty of the castle, from the way it’s sited to its rich history, made Caerlaverock the perfect setting for my stories, The Maxwell Ghost and The Highlander’s English Woman.

There were several original fortifications that preceded the current castle, a Roman fort on Ward Law Hill and a British hill fort that was used until 950.

The earliest mention of Caerlaverock is the 1160s, when the lands were granted to the monks of Holm Cultram Abbey. Sixty years later, in 1220 the lands were granted to Sir John Maxwell by Alexander II of Scotland.

The Maxwell family has owned the Caerlaverock Castle ever since, but not without some intrigue and adventure. The clan leader changed allegiances from Scotland to England several times which resulted in sieges, destruction and rebuilding.

John Maxwell began construction of the first castle at Caerlaverock. A traditional square design with a moat and a north facing bridge, the building was one of the earliest stone castles built in Scotland. Archeologists believe that this castle was never completed when it was abandoned. This castle was built close to the Solway Firth. Built on clay the wood pilings were not able to bear the weight of the structure. In addition, the structure couldn’t be kept dry or comfortable.  Today, the foundations and part of a wooden enclosure around it is all that remains.

Work began on the new castle, six hundred feet south of the abandoned structure in 1260.

Construction on the new (present) castle, on a solid rock outcropping and was completed in the 1270s. The castle’s first occupant was Herbert Maxwell, nephew of Sir John Maxwell.

Caerlaverock was the Maxwell family’s stronghold from the 13th to the 17th centuries. It underwent several sieges over the centuries and was finally abandoned in 1640. The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, but retained its triangular plan.

In 1299, Maxwell forces from Caerlaverock Castle attached the English-held Lochmaben Castle. Edward I retaliated in July 1300 and attacked Caerlaverock with 87 knights and 3,000 men. Eustace Maxwell, the clan chief repelled the English several times. In the end, the garrison surrendered. King Edward was astounded that only sixty men held his army off.

Caerlaverock Castle remained in English hands until 1312 when the castle was returned to Sir Eustace Maxwell who pledged allegiance to the English king, Edward II. Later, Eustace switched his support to Robert the Bruce and the castle was unsuccessfully attacked by the English.

Because of Caerlaverock’s prime position on the England-Scottish border and the fear it could fall into the hands of the English who would have a strong command of the district, Sir Eustace dismantled the fortress, a sacrifice rewarded by Robert the Bruce.

In 1337 the castle was once again inhabited and once again the Eustace changed sides. About 1355 the castle was captured by the Scots.

The Maxwells regained Caerlaverock after the Wars of Independence in the mid-14th century. Between 1373 and 1410, Robert Maxwell rebuilt much of the castle. His efforts were continued by Robert II in the mid-15th century.

In 1567, the Maxwells supported Mary, Queen of Scots and Caerlaverock was once again under siege by the English in 1570. The Earl of Sussex led the English forces and demolished part of the castle.

In 1593, Lord John Maxwell repaired the castle for defense against the Johnstones of Annandale with whom he was feuding.

The Wars for Independence were replaced by wars of religion. In 1634, religious turmoil turned against the Catholic Maxwells. In 1640 the Protestant Covenanter army attacked Caerlaverock for thirteen weeks forcing the castle to surrender. The south wall and tower were demolished and the castle was never repaired or reoccupied.

The castle passed by inheritance to the Herries family and to the Duke of Norforlk. While currently owned by Lady Mary Mumford’s sister Baroness Herries, since 1946 the castle has been operated and managed by Historic Scotland. The castle remains the ancestral home of the Maxwell family.

Excerpt:

“Do you have any idea why Darla wants you away from Glen Kirk?” Jamie asked.

Laura’s back stiffened. “I see that she wants me to visit Caerlaverock to help Cousin Herbert in her place. The bigger question is why are you against taking me? Because if you are, James Maxwell Collins, I’m sure Gareth or one of the men will gladly escort me.”

“Wait, Lass. I’ve not said I wouldn’t take you with me. I’m simply inquiring as to why Darla is so anxious to have you away.” His soft tone and softer eyes quieted her. Lisbeth’s words were right. She cringed at the idea of marrying Bryce. He wasn’t where her interests lie.

“Has Bryce said anything?” He moved forward in his chair. “Has he done anything to—” His fist pounded the table making her jump.

“No, not at all.” Her hand instinctively covered his fist to ease his concern. “He makes me uncomfortable. That’s all. You said the ghost appeared after Evan died three weeks ago. You don’t have much time.” She removed her hand, got up and sat by the dying fire. Jamie followed.

“What do you mean? Much time?” he asked as he stirred the embers to life.

Laura sat and watched muscles under his shirt as he stretched and maneuvered the heavy log. The glow of the fire reflected off the gold strands threaded through his dark ginger hair and gave a soft halo effect. A smirk touched her lips. Jamie was no saint and the gossip of his escapades was legendary with the girls and women in the village. She dreamt of him at one time, a young girl’s fascination.

He turned toward her.

“Laura, what do you mean not much time?”

Beth and JD’s Love Story as Told by @RuthACasie #romance #TuesdayBookBlog #books

Moments - Ruth 5

Title: I’ll Be Home for Christmas from Timeless Moments—The Final Chapter

Author: Ruth A Casie

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Blurb:

Moments - Ruth 1

Excerpt:

The Games AFoot - HolmesandWatson

Title: The Games A’Foot from Welcome to Havenport

Author:  Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Did you hear Beth Holmes and JD Watson are in town? Will sparks fly? Only if it’s the ones between these two lovebirds. Pick up autographed copies of their latest best sellers at their tent. Now those two should craft a book together. He writes compelling mystery and her steamy stuff is to die for. Adventure on the horizon? Who knows…maybe The Game’s AFoot.

The Games AFoot - Kickthedoorclosed

Excerpt:

Delicate white curtains danced as a warm summer breeze filtered through several open windows. The fresh smell of the salt air and rhythmic pounding of the surf provided a soothing backdrop. Bittersweet Jack, the last book in the Jack Daniel series, rested in her lap. Her hand traced the familiar face on the back of the dust cover. Author JD Watson. The JD Watson. Her JD Watson.

“I’m glad this class is over. I’m eager to write our own story.” Jarred’s warm whiskey voice set loose butterflies that fluttered in her stomach. Did he mean their collaboration on the new mystery series or their own blooming romance? She put the book aside on a stack of papers, sank back into the overstuffed club chair, and picked up a glass of sweet iced lemonade from the side table.

A candid picture of the family and Jarred taken last Christmas caught her attention. Her sudden fall off the best-seller list in December, and the cancellation of the next book in her Jo Dee series, had flushed her career down the toilet. How easily she’d blamed everyone, even top-selling author JD Watson. That was until Jarred stepped into her life, but that’s another story.

“How soon will you be here?” No reason to hide her eagerness. They were past playing games.

“I’m on my way to meet Matt Lyons for a quick cup of coffee before I leave. I should be in Havenport in time to take you to dinner.”

“Take me,” she half teased in a soft and seductive voice. “Afterward we’ll have a quiet meal here.”

“Sounds inviting.” The voice on the other end was soft, male, and mellow. “I may sign up to teach another master’s class in New York City if I can expect this type of welcome home.”

“Not an option.”

Jarred’s soft chuckle, the one that drove her crazy from the roots of her hair to her girlie parts, washed over her in a rush of heat.

She shared him with his students and suffered through the past three weeks without him. Now she wanted him to herself. Dinner on the patio with soft music and a glass of wine by the fire pit sounded heavenly. She could be the appetizer or dessert. Perhaps both. The playful idea, along with the expectation of his tender touch, made her melt into the soft cushions. She tried to remember which store displayed the cute peach silk chemise that revealed enough skin to drive him crazy. It would come to her. “Say hello to Agent Matt for me.” Beth abandoned the chair for the window.

She looked at the wind sock in the yard, the wisp of the clouds in the July sky, and the full sails of the boats as they tacked offshore. Everything reinforced why she loved Havenport. The town was perfect. The house was perfect. Jarred was perfect.

“When will Matt be back to Havenport? I want to introduce him to Bernice. She’ll be here tomorrow. It’s time my sister catered more than other people’s weddings.” Mrs. Bernice Lyons. That would be perfect.

“Your sister is awesome and not only because she concocts the best hamburger I ever ate, but let’s not have them marching down the aisle before they meet.”

“I’ll try to contain myself.” Hamburger. For pity’s sake. The Kobe beef burger topped with exotic truffles on a brioche bun sold for one hundred fifty dollars at one of Boston’s top restaurants.

“Contain yourself. You? I’ll believe that when I see it,” Jarred muttered. “What’s on your agenda today, besides writing?”

Knight of Runes by @RuthACasie #BookReview! #romance #TuesdayBookBlog

KnightofRunesFinalnew

Title: Knight of Runes

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Romance, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance, Time Travel

Publisher: Carina Press

Book Blurb:

My Review:

I’m a romantic, through and through, and Knight of Runes is the epitome of Medieval Time-Travel Romance: a man tormented by his past mistakes, a woman flung into the past trying to find her way back, an antagonist bent on coming between the two lovers and history brought alive by a talented storyteller.

Rebeka is in the present day and she discovers she’s inherited a vast estate in England. It’s a good thing she’s a historian and a scholar because the previous owner wants her to continue researching the vast history of the manor. She goes on a tour and before she knows what’s happened, she’s transported back in time.

Lord Arik discovers Rebeka wandering his lands and at once, his suspicions are aroused. Is she a spy for the king or someone else? Is she the one responsible for what’s happening to his lands? He tries to keep her at arms length but there’s something about her he can’t put his finger on. He’s drawn to her and his desire runs rampant, pushing away his logic.

Rebeka doesn’t tell anyone she’s from the future; she’s afraid of the consequences if she does. So, she tells Lord Arik she’s a scribe sent from London but she knows Arik isn’t fooled. The more she’s around him, the stronger her feelings grow. Can she trust him with the truth or will he deem her a traitor?

Truthfully, I read the sequel to this book last year so I already knew the outcome. But that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this book. In fact, it allowed me to just let go and immerse myself in the world Casie has created. Filled with historically accurate characters, setting and druid lore, Knight of Runes is wonderful. I loved that Arik and Rebeka argued over ideas and concepts, much to chagrin of Lord Arik. Rebeka made him think and in Medieval times, women would never think to second-guess men, especially Lords.

The romance in Knight of Runes is sweeping and swoon-worthy. When Lord Arik realizes his mistake and sees Rebeka for who she is, he swoops in to save her. His desperation to save her melted my heart and made me yearn for my own knight (Mr. N).

If you’re a romance lover, this is a must-read. Casie has a true talent for storytelling (especially romance) and she’s quickly becoming my favorite author!

Favorite Character:

Rebeka. I loved everything about her, from her ability to blend in to her feistiness, and when I read the last page, I wanted more. She’s a warrior with internal strength she doesn’t even know she has and I secretly want a walking stick like hers. She’s proof-positive that there’s a perfectly-matched mate for each of us. She also proves that if you’re yourself and don’t compromise, men will be drawn to you.

Favorite Quote:

“His breath caught and his heartbeat quickened as a rapturous surge raced through his body. Something eternal and familiar, with a sense of longing, unsettled him. In the next heartbeat, she tore her eyes away, leaving him empty.”

Top 10 #Medieval #HistoricalRomance Novels to Read #FridayReads #books

Friday Book Round Up

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round Up. It’s the middle of summer and during this time of year, I yearn to read novels that take me back into the past. Lately, I’ve been enjoying Medieval Historical Romances. It started with Jude Deveraux on Canada Day and I’ve worked my way through quite a few more as it’s almost time for my vacation. Why do I love this particular genre? I’m not sure but I think it has something to do with virile knights and the ladies who love them. Anyway, here are my must-read recommendations if you love the genre as much as I do:

Knight of Runes by Ruth A. Casie

England, 1605

The Conquest by Jude Deveraux

Lovely Zared Peregrine was the pride of her family, a treasure her rough-hewn brothers would strive at any cost to protect from their ancient enemies, the Howards. The Peregrines had suffered loss enough. Thus Zared’s brothers trained her in the arts of war, and dressed her in boy’s clothing. Beyond the castle walls, none knew that the youngest Peregrine was a girl….

Yet when the magnificent Knight Tearle Howard returned from a lengthy sojourn in France, it took him but one glance to discover that Zared was most definitely female, and beautiful. Now, as the enmity between their families raged on, Tearle would mount a bold campaign to win the ravishing spitfire’s heart — and save her from his brother’s dark and deadly obsession!

Lord Grayson’s Bride (Highland Regency Brides Book 1) by Tarah Scott

She can’t allow his love for her to destroy him…

When Nicholas Spencer, Earl of Grayson, returns to claim the woman he loves, Lady Josephine Knightly isn’t willing to forgive him for abandoning her six years ago. But neither can she resist the man he’s become.

Two days after Josephine signs the marriage contract she discovers a nasty secret that will destroy her family. The only way to protect them—to protect the only man she’s ever loved—is to disappear…or die.

Nicholas won’t make the same mistake twice and let Josephine Knightly go. She loves him. He felt it in their one kiss before he left, and in the single kiss she allowed since his return. But she’s doing everything in her power to sabotage the marriage even before it’s begun. Nicholas doesn’t care. If Hell is where he must live to have her, then she must stand by his side in the fire.

LADY AT ARMS: A Medieval Romance by Tamara Leigh

LADY AT ARMS: A “clean read” rewrite of the bestselling WARRIOR BRIDE, published by Bantam Books, 1994

HE WAS THE VILEST OF MEN

Lizanne Balmaine has spent years honing her skills at arms, determined she will never again be at the mercy of any man. When she comes face to face with the one who stole her future, she seizes the opportunity to exact revenge. Soon he is her prisoner, at her mercy. But something is different about him, something that makes her question her purpose. Is it possible a man can be so changed? More, can she right the wrong that could lay ruin to her family?

SHE WAS A QUESTION NEVER BEFORE ASKED OF HIM

Ranulf Wardieu does not seek a bride, nor a settling of scores when his mission for the king places him in the path of a beguiling, raven-haired maiden. But fascination turns to fury when she imprisons him. Accused of wrongdoing, the nature of which she refuses to reveal, he discovers the lady is as skilled at wielding a sword as she is at verbal sparring. When he bests her at her game and his jailer becomes his captive, he is determined to learn what wrong he has done her. However, as they engage in a battle of wits and wills and he glimpses her woman’s heart, he discovers Lizanne is a question never before asked of him—one his own jaded heart refuses to answer.

The Beautiful Pretender (A Medieval Fairy Tale Book 2) by Melanie Dickerson

After inheriting his title from his brother, the margrave has two weeks to find a noble bride. What will happen when he learns he has fallen for a lovely servant girl in disguise?

The Margrave of Thornbeck has to find a bride, fast. He invites ten noble born ladies who meet the king’s approval to be his guests at Thornbeck Castle for two weeks, a time to test these ladies and reveal their true character.

Avelina has only two instructions: keep her true identity a secret and make sure the margrave doesn’t select her as his bride. Since the latter seems unlikely, she concentrates on not getting caught. No one must know she is merely a maidservant, sent by the Earl of Plimmwald to stand in for his daughter, Dorothea.

Despite Avelina’s best attempts at diverting attention from herself, the margrave has taken notice. And try as she might, she can’t deny her own growing feelings. But something else is afoot in the castle. Something sinister that could have far worse—far deadlier—consequences.

Conquered (Thrice Blessed Book 1) by Kirsten Osbourne

He’s told there are three sister witches defending their home and the oldest is his promised bride. Both Christiana and Roland are used to being in charge. Will the sisters be able to fight off the coming evil to fulfill their destiny? Is it possible for two headstrong people from different cultures to find a way to live as husband and wife?

Lady of the Eternal Hearth by Sandi Murtland

In the spirit of the Mists of Avalon, Lady of the Eternal Hearth presents the epic love story and courageous adventures of Nora, a healer with power far beyond human abilities, and Gawaine of Lothian, King Arthur’s captain of field and most loyal knight.

Set in 6th century post-Roman Britain and Scotland, Nora’s tale begins with the disappearance of her beloved kinsman, Gildas, archdruid of Britain and apprentice to the famed Merlyn. Her quest to find him leads her to legendary Camelot where she meets Gawaine. But, secrets of her sordid past with King Arthur’s bastard son and apparent heir, Mordred, and his mad mother, Morgaine, loom over her shoulder. She desperately tries to conceal her identity by working in the kitchens of Camelot and befriending head cook and would-be spy, Lorelei.

However, the undeniable attraction between Nora and Gawaine turns to love, and he vows to help her find her kinsman. As their search for Gildas unfolds across the hills and moors of southern Britain, they discover a conspiracy to usurp King Arthur’s throne and a vengeful curse that’s destroying the lands. Meanwhile, Nora learns of her powerful past life, an uncontrollable dark side to her Goddess-given gifts, and her place in a sacred order of the Goddess amongst the Priestesses of Elemental Power. This legacy includes the Lady of the Lake, who has control over water, as well as other lady priestesses who possess power over fire, air, and earth.

As the pieces fall into place, will Nora and Gawaine find Gildas? Can they and their allies save ancient Britain from the curse, the conspirators, and especially the ruthless and maniacal Mordred? Is Nora strong enough to control her unbelievable power and claim her legacy? Does she even want to?

Lady of the Eternal Hearth stretches across genres. Historical figures mixed with those of Arthurian legend and a host of new characters give this novel a truly historical/fantasy/Arthurian romance vibe.

* * *

* * *

* * *

* * *

Enjoy the July 4th parade and celebration, including vendor tents, food and Mayor Owen to kick things off. Fireworks display over the harbor starting at 10PM. (weather permitting)
Happy July 4th!

My Review:

Looking for a beach read this summer? Welcome to Havenport offers something for everyone. From young love budding amongst family/life struggles to one couple’s magical romance to a romantic suspense featuring my favorite couple (Beth and Jarrod) to a military/pet romance. This boxset has it all.

New Beginnings- While I like this couple as they’re trying to navigate life and falling in love, I found the story to be out of place in a romance boxset. The romance takes a backseat and it’s all about Max discovering who his birth parents are plus Olivia dealing with her obtrusive sister and family. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid story but I’d classify it as New Adult fiction rather than contemporary romance. If this isn’t your thing, please skip to the next one. I promise, you won’t be sorry.

Under Her Spell – I’m a big fan of paranormal romance and this story was fantastic! I loved Christa and her conflict. She fled months ago and left Jeremy high and dry… but with good reason. Can she overcome her fear and face the truth about her feelings for him or will the dark magick finally destroy her? I loved this I can’t wait to find out more about this couple. The author draws you in and doesn’t let go. Plus, the scenes with Jeremy are downright yummy!

The Game’s Afoot – Beth and Jarred are back in Havenport, only it’s far more dangerous than either of them realizes. They made the decision to collaborate last Christmas but it’s more difficult than they thought. Every time Jarred sends her notes, Beth cringes with self-doubt. She needs to confess her feelings to him before it pulls them apart. But that’s the least of their issues when Beth accidentally stumbles upon a criminal plot in the least-likely place. Can Jarred protect her or will he be too late? A beautifully written romantic suspense by Casie and it only made me love this couple more. Casie kicks up the adrenaline at just the right spots and has a talent for romantic suspense. Well done!

Havenport Hero – Who doesn’t swoon over a military man? Evan and Augusta are such fun in this story. I remember them from The Final Chapter (previous collection) and their story continues. Evan decides he wants to run for town council and I’d salute him anytime. * winks * Augusta and her furry pets are adorable and I want to read more! A blend of pet and military romance that’ll make your heart beat faster.

Favorite Story:

The Game’s Afoot. I loved everything about this story from the plot to the pacing. This is Casie’s first attempt at romantic suspense and she’s got a talent for it. Plus, Beth’s mobile app is a must-own for any author. Jarred is sexy as can be while still being sensitive to Beth’s needs. Can’t wait for more from this couple!

My Rating for the Boxset:  4 stars

The Game’s AFoot

Former best-selling romantic comedy author Beth Alexander is reinventing herself, using her real name, Beth Holmes, changing genres, and collaborating with bestselling adventure author JD Watson. Since their first meeting last Christmas, Jarred (JD) has made her heart race. Plagued with self-doubts caused by her nosedive off the best-seller list, Beth fears she’s unable to craft a heroine worthy of Jarred’s hero. Will their collaboration be a liability to his skyrocketing career? Their relationship?

Jarred Watson is in love with Beth no matter which last name she uses, and had been long before they’d met. Since reading her first novel, he suspected the heroine was based on the flesh-and-blood author. Those qualities made him fall in love with both the fictitious and very real woman. After meeting her last Christmas he confirmed he had it right. But Beth’s recent lackluster success leaves her doubting her writing ability. How can he convince the woman he loves she’s as great as ever and the vital piece needed to make their collaboration a success?

The plot thickens…

Excerpt:

I’ve Been Runed: A Guest Post by Best-Selling Author @RuthACasie #Runes #Romance #MFRWAuthor

Rune Picture 1

I’ve Been Runed! A Guest Post by Ruth A. Casie

The first writing systems used by the Germanic people were runic alphabets. Like Egyptian hieroglyphics, runes were more letters each was an ideographic or pictographic symbol. To the Ancients, they were associated with the principles of power and write a rune was to invoke the force for which it stood.  The word rune means ‘letter,’ ‘secret’ or ‘mystery.’ Its original meaning may have been ‘hushed message.’

Runes, tied to the principles of power, had magical significance and were used to create spells and foretell the future.

In folklore, the runes were given to mankind by the Odin, the Norse God of mythology. He died and passed on to the afterlife where he gained wisdom and passed his new wisdom to his people in the form of Runes.

Runes date back to the first century  c.e. until well into the Middle Ages. The Roman alphabet became the preferred script in most of Europe.

Runes picture 2

We’ve learned that the runic alphabet is out outgrowth of two distinct sources—one magical and the other literate. Many Bronze Age rock carvings, primarily in Sweden, have pre-runic symbols.  Some of these symbols are alphabetic letters, while others represent ideas and concepts, sigils. These concepts were incorporated into the names of runes (sun, horse, etc.) and, unfortunately the meaning of these sigils and their purpose are lost to us. They were, however, believed to have been used for divination or lot casting. It’s believed that sigils contributed to the magical aspects of the later runic alphabets.

The name “futhark”, like the word “alphabet”, is derived from the first few letters in the runic sequence. The futhark originally consisted of 24 letters, beginning with F and ending with O, and was used by the northern Germanic tribes of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Northern Germany.  This is knows as the Elder, or Germanic Futhark forms of the runic alphabet.

Runes were used well into the 17th Century and were known by the common people who used them for simple runic spells. They also consulted them (like Tarot cards). Runes and the magical arts were banned in 1639 as part of the Church’s efforts to “drive the devil out of with Europe”.  The rune masters were either executed or went underground, and the knowledge of the runes appears to have died with them.  Some had the knowledge passed on in secret, but it is almost impossible to separate ancient traditions from more modern esoteric philosophies in such cases.

In my novel, Knight of Rapture, magical runes play a large part in the story. Rebeka must decode the runes and the ancient prophecy it hides to save all she loves.

For months Lord Arik has been trying to find the precise spell to rescue his wife, Rebeka, but the druid knight will soon discover that reaching her four hundred years in the future is the easiest part of his quest.

Bran, the dark druid, follows Arik across the centuries, tireless in his quest for revenge. He’ll force Arik to make a choice, return to save his beloved family and home or stay in the 21st century and save Rebeka and hope she regains her memory. He can’t save them both.

Rebeka Tyler has no recollection of where she’s been the past five months. On top of that, ownership of her home, Fayne Manor, is called into question. When accidents begin to happen it looks more and more like she is the target. Further complicating things is the strange man who conveniently appears wherever trouble brews—watching her, perhaps even….protecting her? Or is he a deliberate attempt to distract her? Rebeka can only be sure of one thing—her family name and manor have survived for over eleven centuries. She won’t let them fall… in any century.

We’re Interviewing Lord Jamie Collins from The Guardian’s Witch @RuthACasie #Romance #BookPromo

The Inside Scoop – Part Two

Thank you so much for joining me. In a follow up to our interview with Lord Alex and Lady Lisbeth, brother-in-law and Scotsman Jamie Collins is with us today. You must know that this has taken us months to arrange. The man just cannot be pinned down. Personally, I can’t wait to get a different perspective on the hero and heroine of Ruth A. Casie’s book, The Guardian’s Witch.

Oh wait, there’s a lot of commotion at the door to the studio. It must be him. Yes, I see he’s walking this way. You can’t miss him. He towers over everyone. Josh, our sound technician, is six feet. Jamie dwarfs him. This may take a few minutes. He’s making time to speak with everyone. For here I can feel his magnetism.

(Jamie takes his seat.)

Reporter: (Nods to Jamie then looks at the audience) Today’s guest, Lord James Collins—

Jamie: Please, Jamie will do.

Reporter: Of course… Jamie is the brother-in-law of Lord Alex Stelton and Lady Lisbeth Reynolds. Lord Alex is the exceptional knight who put his life on the line for the woman he loves, his wife, Lady Lisbeth. She too was willing to risk it all–to save her husband. Jamie was the man behind the curtain that helped them both succeed.

Reporter: (Turning to his guest) Thank you for taking time to talk to us today. My staff has tried for some time to reach you.

Jamie: I’m flattered that you sought me out, but I’m not the one you should be speaking to. Lord Alex and Lady Lisbeth are the hero and heroine of the story. The tale is theirs to tell.

Reporter: You’re much too humble. But let me start at the beginning. What was your first impression of Lord Alex?

Jamie: A handsome, prideful man, Alex had to make his own way in the world. By reputation, I knew he was loyal to his king and had his trust, to boot. Not an easy thing in these times. Still, I watched him with the castle, villagers, and Lisbeth.

Reporter: And what did you find? What part did you play in the romantic adventure?

Jamie: By the time we met I knew a great deal about him. I was sure he wasn’t there to line his pockets but rather to keep the people safe and make Glen Kirk Castle prosper. My part in the romantic adventure? Nice turn of a phrase. Glen Kirk Castle sits in a precarious place, on the border of England and Scotland. My clan and Lord Wesley Reynolds family have been close for centuries. I married their Laura, the love of my life. Since Lord Wesley and Lady Darla’s untimely death I’ve watched over Lisbeth. And that’s no easy task. She is quite the independent woman.

Reporter: And what of Lady Lisbeth?

Jamie: Ach, there’s a bonny lass. She was afraid her talents would cause the villagers great harm. You know she’s a witch.

Reporter: (nodded)

Jamie: (Bent forward toward the reporter) With the Lord and Lady gone, her king sent protectors to care for the castle and people. They were weak minded men. She feared each one he sent. Not for herself. When she stood up to the first man the king sent he called her a witch. If that wasn’t bad enough when her people stood beside her he called them her coven and threatened to kill them all. He accomplished what he wanted, kept the people and Lisbeth away. He was too busy raiding her father’s fine wine cellar and trying to strip the castle of anything worth value. After he disappeared, my men and I helped Lisbeth and the castle staff pack everything and hide it away.

Reporter: And when Lord Alex arrived?

Jamie: (Sat back and relaxed) Now there was a different man. You didn’t have to be a witch or a fey to see he was the right man for Glen Kirk and for Lisbeth. He cared about both. By the time he arrived everyone was suspect of the king’s men. He had a lot to prove.

Reporter: As Lady Lisbeth’s brother-in-law and only male relative. Did you approve their marriage?

Jamie: It was a horrible thing his king did, horrible, marrying them by proxy and Lisbeth ignorant of the plan.

Reporter: (Shuffling papers) I have a good source in the King’s most private council that the proxy marriage was your idea. (More paper shuffling) Yes, here it is. When you went to London, you spoke to the king and over a few glasses of ale you both planned the event.

Jamie: (The smile on his face didn’t reach his eyes. Jamie reached over and crushed the pages in his hand) What did you say?

Reporter: (Visibly uncomfortable) Umm… Nothing, sir. Nothing at all.

Jamie: (His demeanor softened, slightly) That the two were in love was not a question. Everyone knew but them. Lisbeth, well she vowed never to marry afraid her gift would… well, let’s just say she wanted to stop the line of magic that was well established in her mother’s family. Alex? He was no better. The king thought the solution was brilliant.

Reporter: You were a loyal son-in-law even though your political beliefs differ.

Jamie: Lord Wesley may have been English but he judged a man fairly. He and Lady Darla were good and kind to their family and their people. Our families were neighbors separated by an imaginary line. We shared many things, a love of the land, a love of family, and a love of friends.

(Jamie hesitated deep in thought)

Jamie: They didn’t deserve to be murdered. I knew the moment I saw their crumpled carriage it wasn’t an accident. I vowed I would see the assassin pay.

Reporter: You took unusual action for a Scotsman.

Jamie: (His face flushed in anger) What did you expect me to do? (He spit out the words between clenched teeth.)

Reporter: Sir, I meant no disrespect. On the contrary. For a Scotsman of your high stature to go to the English king and tell him his favored lord and lady were murdered and pledge your support. Amazing.

Jamie: Lord Wesley and Lady Darla had to be avenged. The king agreed with me. When I came back I wouldn’t rest until the puzzle was solved. I would do it all again.

Reporter: I understand you met Lord Alex’s six brothers.

Jamie: Yes. They look like a small army when they stand together. Each one is nagged by one of the deadly sins. It took Lisbeth’s love and trust to help him overcome his excessive pride. I understand there may be a book about each brother. (Jamie looks directly into the audience) You just have to tell the author you want to hear more about the Stelton Legacy. She’s immune to my badgering. Perhaps she’ll be more responsive to yours.

Reporter: Thank you for your time. (turning to the audience) You can find out more about Jamie, Lord Alex and Lady Lisbeth in The Guardian’s Witch by Ruth A. Casie available for their Nook, iBook, KOBO or Kindle

I hope you enjoyed the interview. Here’s a brief overview of The Guardian’s Witch.

But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him.

My Review:

If I could choose to live in one century in history, it would be the 13th century. I can’t tell you what it is about that time period that I love so much. All I know is that historical romances written in the 13th century are some of my all-time favorites. When I heard that Ruth A. Casie had written a historical romance with magical elements in the 13th century, I jumped in with both feet.

Lisbeth comes from a long line of healers. Everyone in the village near Glen Kirk respects her for her compassion and special knowledge of herbs and tonics, even the King of England. When the King sends her Lord Alex as Protector of Glen Kirk, little does she know that her life will be forever altered. There’s something about Lord Alex, something she can’t place her finger on, that is, until he’s mortally wounded.

Lord Alex is desperate to escape court and for a land of his own. The King gives him the coveted Glen Kirk (near the border of Scotland) along with the beautiful Lady Lisbeth as his bride. Alex groans but goes ahead with the plan. But before he can tell Lisbeth they’re married by proxy, he’s attacked and almost dies.

Lisbeth saves Alex on more than one occasion and she begins to wonder if he’s the man for her. She certainly has intoxicating dreams about him. But she’s afraid, deeply afraid of losing him like she lost her parents and brother. Can she trust Alex enough to let him into her heart and once inside, can she share her deepest secret or will she lose him forever?

A beautiful historical romance filled with intriguing characters, a complex plot with twists and turns, magical elements and a love story that made me swoon. I loved both Alex and Lisbeth (not to mention their parents) as main characters and once again, Ruth A. Casie creates a love so deep, not even death can stop it. She reveals both of them have trust issues (as well as other personality insecurities) and that just made them all the more likable.

The plot, with all its historical details and surprises, was a pleasure to work through. Alex and Lisbeth go through a lot (and I mean a lot) of ups and downs but it all makes sense when you get to the climax. Ruth A. Casie wove quite a bit of suspense which I loved. I couldn’t turn the pages fast-enough.

I read this book in two sittings and I highly recommend it! I’m hoping the author makes this a series as I would love to hear more about Alex’s parents and his six brothers. This is one of my favorite historical romances of all time!

Favorite Character:

My favorite character is Lisbeth and here’s why: she reminds me of myself if I was in the 13th century. She’s tormented by the death of her parents, deathly afraid of letting any man into her heart, a healer who has a gentle spirit, a passionate woman and quite independent. Even when people tell her to do something (like stay inside the castle walls), she’s a tad stubborn. Now, I’m not admitting to being a healer or a witch but the essence of Lisbeth is very similar to mine. She’s an extremely likable character and I want to learn more about her parents (hint, hint Ruth A. Casie).

Favorite Quote: “She’d brought many a warrior to his knees saving their lives. He would be no exception.” ~Lisbeth

Ruth A Casie close

Author Biography:

It started with a whisper. Ruth’s friend Denise confessed she was going to write a novel, a romance novel. It started Ruth thinking. Snippets of stories with dashing men and valiant women have always raced through her mind (yes, some call it daydreaming), only to fade. Denise’s whisper made her stop and think.

Ruth’s daydreams had plots, goals, motivations, conflicts, romance, and a wide range of romantic adventurous characters. So, she started writing. How empowering to give her stories breath, watch the words fill page after page, and make the characters come to life! Her characters became as dear to her as if they were real.  But that’s only part of her adventure.

For the next year, she studied, taking workshops with some of the best romance writers, agents and editors in the industry, and worked hard to apply what she had learned. She met wonderful people, published and unpublished, in the RWA chapters and writing groups to which she belongs as well as in the classes she took.

Today, Ruth works closely with her critique partners. As the only one with a publishing credit, she spearheaded the development of a project early in 2013 while at the Romantic Times convention in Kansas City. Everyone in the critique group would write a short story and they would publish it themselves. Together, they studied the art of short story writing with a writing professional, and hired developmental and copy editors. The group went on to establish Timeless Scribes Publishing. They now have several anthologies to their credit.

Ruth is a long-time volunteer with Center for Hope and Safety, Bergen County New Jerseys only agency for victims of domestic violence. She has fulfilled a variety of positions there and is s the immediate past president of the agency’s Board of Directors.

Ruth also is an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section, a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. She’s a volunteer in several community services and is the co-vice president of community services.

When the children were small Ruth’s husband Paul signed them up for ballroom dancing classes. It was one way to be certain they were in each others arms at least once a week. While they don’t take classes often anymore they do try to get out and dance.  For more about Ruth, visit www.RuthACasie.com , where you can find more about her books and what she’s working on.
