Title: A Lion’s Heart (Shadow Shifters Book 7)

Author: AC Arthur

Genre: Paranormal Shifter Romance

Book Blurb:

Shadow Shifter Assembly Leader Roman Reynolds and his mate Kalina, have had a vicious fight on their hands for the last twenty years. The war between the humans and the shifters has grown lethal and to make matters worse, their now grown daughter, Nisa is on the battlefield.

The Rebel

Nisa Reynolds is a soldier. Despite her love and respect for her parents’ position in this fight, Nisa is determined to do things her way. If only she can convince the devilishly sexy white lion shifter traveling with her that her plan is the best option for the shifters survival…if only she were strong enough to fight the passion brewing between them.

The Lion

Decan Canter’s tribe had long since learned to co-exist with the other feline shifter tribes as they all lived in Oasis and believed in saving their race by any means necessary. Having a direct order come to him from the Assembly Leader to escort his daughter across the country, wasn’t something he’d expected, yet he respected the order and had tried his best to obey. But Nisa Reynolds was unlike any other shifter Decan had ever met, and even if it meant dying at the hands of the reputed Roman Reynolds, he had to taste her…only, having her once, was never going to be enough.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is the 7th book in the Shadow Shifters series. This book is a standalone novel that takes place 20 years after the last story. However, if you would like to read the previous books in this series, they are as follows:

Temptation Rising

Seduction’s Shift

Passion’s Prey

Shifter’s Claim

Hunger’s Mate

Primal Heat

Excerpt:

Nisa stared directly at him as she extended an arm and patted the pillow beside her.

“Leading requires a clear head. Rest works wonders for a busy mind. My Uncle Baxter used to say that to me when I was a little,” she told him.

“I’m not a child,” Decan replied.

That admission hadn’t been necessary. Nisa knew he wasn’t a child. He was a full grown shifter. One whom she was undoubtedly attracted to. She wondered if that were the reason she’d invited him to sleep beside her. No, it wasn’t. She believed in keeping her enemies, and those she hadn’t quite yet decided whether or not to trust, close.

“And yet, the rest theory, would probably still work,” she quipped. “Come on. I’ll stay on my side of the bed. I promise I don’t bite.”

That brought a chuckle from him. The sound was quick and momentarily startled her. It wasn’t until she felt the bed give beneath his weight as he sat on the other side and leaned over to remove his boots that she realized it was because she liked it.

Following her advice it only took him a few seconds, of which he used to pull his shirt over his head and lay back on the bed beside her. Nisa was surprised by how close he was. Maybe this bed was smaller than she’d thought. She attempted to roll over again, but immediately felt his arm going around her waist to pull her back against him.

When her back was spooned against his front and she was once again biting her lip at the new development, she felt the sharp nick against her neck.

“I’m not making any promises about not biting,” he whispered as his tongue licked over the spot where his lion’s teeth had scraped along her skin.

Xander (A Dark Assassins Novel Book Three)

By Valerie Ullmer

Genre:  Paranormal Romance

[ Blurb ]

Half-human, half-shifter.

Xander has secretly yearned for a mate for most of his immortal existence, and yet after three of his friends found exactly what he’s always wanted, he’d come to believe that he’d missed his chance at happiness.

Until he heard her voice.

Frost is a wildlife biologist and tracker and she has been assigned, despite her adamant protests, to lead mercenaries into the mountains of Snowfall, Colorado for the sole purpose of killing immortal shifters.  In order to protect those who have no idea the kind of danger they are in, she agrees.  As she leads the armed men on a wild chase around the snow-covered pines, she could sense that she was running out of time.

Until she heard his voice.

Xander understands exactly who Frost is the moment he hears her thoughts.  With the help of Kane and Gunnar, they eliminate those in her group as they try to keep her safe.  But during the fight, she is hurt and all of his protective instincts flare to life.  As Xander learns more about her, he realizes that Frost might be the key to the creation of the immortals, both vampire and shifter.

But when she becomes a target from those who want to destroy the Dark Company and Xander’s family, how far will he go to save her?

[ Excerpt ]

Xander froze when he heard a feminine voice carry over to him, she sounded closer than she had been even a few moments before.  He should have sensed her coming closer.  But the only question on his mind was why she was tagging along with a group of mercenaries.  He heard the voice again, a tinny version of her voice, and for a long moment he couldn’t understand the words.  Until she stepped forward.

No, no.  Not that way.  Not that way.

Something warmed his chest as he heard her in his head as clearly as they were speaking aloud.  A familiarity washed over him and he felt connected to this woman in an elemental way.  A feeling a peace settled over him.  He knew this was the first time he’d ever heard her voice.  He was so stunned and happy that he didn’t even question how they were able to mind link.

Can either of you hear the woman’s thoughts?

Woman?  Gunnar sounded confused.

Kane’s reply was quick and clipped.  No.

Hello?

Hello?

Xander tried to get her attention.  Can you hear me?

He held his breath when he heard her distinct gasp, knowing that their mind link worked.  His chest filled with dread at the thought that she gave herself away, until he heard her next words.

“I spotted a grizzly bear in the trees to the west.  Sorry, I startled him and he ran off.”

For long seconds, the men in the clearing stared at the woman before they were ordered to keep searching.

Xander stood close enough that he could see her curves underneath the heavy white parka.  And having the worst timing in the world, Xander felt his body react.  He took a deep, cleansing breath of sharp mountain air that instantly cooled his overheated body.

Yes, I can hear you.  These men, seven in total, are looking for immortals.  They have been contracted by my boss at U.S. Fish and Wildlife to kill them.  Apparently, the immortals are supposed to become animals.  Can you help me without hurting yourself?  They are heavily armed.

Xander was taken completely by surprise.  She didn’t question their connection but instead relayed vital information that he would need.  He could also start to feel her emotions.  She wasn’t scared, just determined.  He could hear her heart beating at a fast rate and her breathing strained from either the hike up the mountain or the tension in the air.  He watched as she subtly shifted her head around as she searched for him, unable to spot him in the trees.

We can help.  I’m going to communicate with my team and we’ll take out the men.  Are you okay with that?

Yes, I know they are paid mercenaries and I’m mad that they killed a wolf two days ago for no other reason than they wanted to shoot something.

What’s your name?

Frost.

Frost, I’m Xander.  When I tell you to run, run south.  Okay?

Yes, I understand.

Xander relayed the conversation he had with Frost.  We are going to have to kill them, there’s no other way around it.  They couldn’t have a threat looming over them, especially if one escaped and brought in a stronger, more trained group of mercenaries.  Although they could easily defeat any group of fighters, keeping their existence a secret was crucial.  The more humans that knew about them, the bigger the danger it posed.

A Sneak Peek:

The rumble beneath my feet was the only notice I had of the electric strike that rode straight up my legs, curling in my midsection and crawling swiftly along my right arm to produce my own version of a Fourth of July sparkler, emanating from that fingertip. Then brilliant bolts of crackling white light spit and sizzled in my palm, sending jagged streamers of hot blue fire ten feet into the air.

I gawked.

A car entering a nearby street freed me from the mesmerizing light display. This was different from any of the charging I’d previously experienced. Bigger. Usually it just sort of replenished on its own. Panicked, I looked over my shoulder, and exhaled. So far so good.

Now what? I needed to command the fire in my hand to… what? Before I could say, “Be gone,” or “Go thither,” the light subsided to a small crackly glow. That was it then. Instinct took over. I knelt beside Mr. Jackson and placed my glowing index finger against his chest. With a single szzwaattt, I zapped him, right in the heart. His chest arched up only the barest of seconds as it met my magical defibrillator, then his body relaxed.

Momentarily deafened and somewhat addled as my faculties came back online, I groped for the pulse in his neck. For a second, I thought I’d failed. But then, his tired, smoke glutted organ started beating.

Thank the gods.

Only the slight whiff of burnt flesh remained on the wind. Drained of energy, I swiped the back of my hand across my forehead. And spotted the mark.

“Zeus’ rechargeable bolts! That better be temporary.”

Centered on the spot where I’d zapped him, a pale image was forming. It looked like a pale, mini version of… well… me.

EXCERPT:

The sound of screeching rubber on asphalt drowned out the rest of her words. They both paused, expecting to hear cars colliding. Instead, there was eerie silence—and then the plaintive cry of a wounded animal.

A dog.

They both ran to the window. Outside, the usual neighborhood lowlifes loitered on their grubby street, where the most vibrant business was a check-cashing place. And a bar. Actually, a lot of bars.

And was that a limo? What the hell was one of those doing here?

The dog’s cries continued.

“Smoky!” Lilah gasped, turning away from the window, her heart pounding. “That bastard hit Smoky!”

Smoky was the neighborhood stray. He should’ve been ill-tempered, given his bad luck to live on the streets, but his was the friendliest face on the block, looking happy to see you, always eager for a pat, his tail wagging.

The limo might’ve killed the poor little guy. Taking three stairs at a time, Lilah flew down the stairwell to the stained security door and out the rusty gate to the sidewalk.

The usual drug dealer was standing on the corner, interrupted from talking to whoever was inside a parked silver Chevy. Under that car, only a few feet from him and still whimpering, was a huddled mass of pale fur.

Smoky.

Jess was right on her heels. “Oh, no.”

“We have to help him.” Lilah glanced up and down the street, preparing to cross, her long hair flying as she whipped her head back and forth to make sure it was safe.

Jess grabbed her arm. “You can’t! That’s the dealer who stabbed somebody last year, isn’t it?”

“Different guy,” Lilah said, although it wasn’t. She strode into the street just as the driver of the limo was getting out. She couldn’t leave Smoky to die in the street with those scumbags.

Then she saw the limo driver pull his arms back, hands on hips, revealing a barely-concealed gun on a holster around his chest. The window in the back of the limo remained up, and why shouldn’t it? Why would some rich dude want to get dirty? Why would he care if he’d run over some poor homeless dog?

The tiny scar above Lilah’s left eyebrow began to throb. It jolted her, making the scene before her look shimmery. Unreal. She pressed her fingertips into the tiny divot and hoped the throbbing would go away. The last thing she needed now was a three-day blinding headache.

And she’d run out of her meds. No money.

“What’s wrong, Lilah?” Jess grabbed her elbow and pulled her out of the middle of the street. She’d just frozen there, staring at the back windows of the limo.

Lilah could hear Smoky’s whimpering and the city traffic, but it all came as background noise through the throbbing in her head. It wasn’t quite pain. The pulsing felt like it pierced her brain, a second heartbeat she couldn’t quite follow.

Her vision was fine, and that meant it wasn’t a migraine. Then what was this?

And why did it worsen when her eyes flickered toward the back windows of the limo?

“Let’s get Smoky,” Lilah said, though her mouth felt like it was filled with cotton.

Jess had an arm around her. “I’ll get him. You’re about to faint.”

“I’m fine.” Lilah forced herself to move, shooting an icy glance at the neighborhood felon before she squatted down to the car’s rear bumper.

“Lilah, you look really pale,” Jess insisted, frowning. She looked so much like their mom when she did that.

“Here, puppy,” Lilah cooed, reaching out a hand. She knew the biggest danger was if Smoky ran away again and hid where nobody could help him, so she grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and pulled him as gently as she could out from under the car. Luckily, Smoky was a small thing, barely fifteen pounds, and she got him bundled up in her arms without having to drag him far.

He relaxed in her arms, his shivering more from fear than any injury. Thank goodness.

But as soon as she stood, the throbbing, pulsing pain returned. Her gaze was pulled to the back window of the limo, now open. To the man sitting in the shadows.

Him. Her head felt like someone had dropped a brick on it, her body filling with heat and lava.

It’s him.

What was the matter with her? She had to get Smoky inside. She didn’t know anyone who rode around in a limo, so why did she feel like she did?

Him.

It didn’t matter. She had to get closer. She had to see him.

Holding Smoky in her arms, Lilah took a step toward the limo, then another.

Jess snagged her elbow. “Lilah, no! You can’t! That driver has a gun—”

Lilah was beyond reason, the pounding turning into a word, a word that had no sound, no form, no sense.

Him.

Him.

Him.

That voice. It pounded like a hammer forging steel. She continued to advance on the shining black limo, barely noticing when the driver climbed inside and slammed the door. She was fearless in her uncontrollable need to see that face, to know he was real.

You’re real.

Jess was at her heels. “Lilah, please—”

The limo peeled out, its tires screeching as it drove past her only an arm’s-length away. Two bright blue eyes, glittering with otherworldly sharpness, met hers through the open window. Gold highlights tickled his hair, a honey brown that curved up at the neck, a little too long to be all business, with waves she wanted to sink her fingers into. A strong jaw, set firmly, and those wild, seductive eyes… oh.

Oh my.

And then the voice changed in an instant.

Mine.

Mine.

Mine.

Even Dragons Get the Blues… Take These Broken Wings @LiviaQuinn #books #dragons #MFRWAuthor

Broken Wings EBOOK 06252016 copy

How do you handle stress?

Sheriff Jack Lang came to Destiny after hearing it was a normal “safe” small town – the perfect place to raise his teenage daughter after years of abuse by his crazy ex. Well, the “normal” ship sailed the day he met Tempest Pomeroy. The weeks that followed challenged him far beyond his years as a Navy pilot. He’d been both appalled and attracted to the quirky mail carrier with the rainbow shaded hair and unpredictable weather “talents”. The events of the last months had rolled over them like a tidal wave and just as he was getting used to the idea of being a human lawman in a town of supernaturals, his world had been turned upside down.

Blurb:

Five months ago, Sheriff Jack Lang would have sworn there were no such things as vampires, tempestaeries, djinn or dragons. That was before he met Tempest Pomeroy, trouble magnet and sexy redheaded mail lady. He’d fallen for her before he found out about her “special abilities”. But that wasn’t what turned his life upside down. No, to say Jack’s world had gone FUBAR was like saying Wolverine’s fingernails were long enough for a manicure.

Tempe had been afraid her supernatural nature would be a problem for Jack, who’d mistaken Destiny for a “Mayberry-like” small town, but that didn’t explain why he’d left her in favor of haunting the highest levees in the parish. She knew he’d received a shock, but what was it going to take to get him to return to his life and to her? A stubborn man is one thing; a grumpy, depressed twenty-ton dragon is a bit more of a challenge.

Excerpt:

My stomach growled, again, and I caught a tantalizing whiff. What was it with this persistent aching hunger? Lately, I ate anything in my path, and I mean anything.

One thing had changed, however¾my sense of smell. I could smell a flea farting at fifty paces. I walked quickly around the building, tossing the coffee to the curb and marched like a laser beam – straight to the green dumpster at the rear of the parking lot.

The next thing I knew I was hip deep in trash, my new sniffer guiding me through an assortment of bags and boxes. My stomach thundered, but I was getting used to it, being hungry, I mean. I didn’t know what it took to fill up my dragon gut because so far it had never been full. And these pickings were slim.

What once would’ve turned Jack Lang’s stomach wasn’t bothering me, Jack Lang, Dragon Shifter, in the least. From here on, I’d be thinking of dumpsters as food banks.

I took in the chewed chicken wings, packets of catsup, smashed French-fries and hushpuppies, a bag of dredging flour and cornmeal. My mind lumped it together as energy. I squeezed the catsup onto my tongue. I couldn’t get enough, the containers and packaging were slowing me down. I popped leftover bones and followed them with handfuls of flour. Then I spotted a bucket of old grease and food sitting by the door to the dumpster. Yum!

As I reached for the handle a pair of familiar work boots and tanned legs entered my field of vision. “Jack, what are you doing in that dumpster?”

Tempe’s eyes widened when she saw my face, my hand on the handle of the bucket. I followed her gaze to the flour covering my shirt, pants and boots. I’d been single-mindedly scavenging and hadn’t had a clue that my uniform was caked in white crud, probably my face as well.

“Oh, this?” I couldn’t stop… I was on a binge. I reached for the bucket of slop, which had probably been awaiting some pig farmer, and upended it like a Super Duper 90 drink from Gatorz Grub.

While I guzzled the rich fatty mix of lard and leftovers I watched Tempe’s face turn green and she grimaced. “That is so gross!”

I stopped long enough to belch. “Hold that thought.” I finished off the bucket, let out an audible sigh of satisfaction, wiped my hands on my pants and tossed her my keys. “Do me a favor, will ya? Grab one of the duffels from my trunk.”

Her face said I needed more than just a clothing change. Well, it is what it is. I realized I was approaching midday with a different attitude, although it probably wasn’t quite the attitude Tempe had been looking for. When she returned, I pulled myself away from my delicious snack—I could always slip back tonight after they’d restocked my dumpster—they were open twenty-four hours.

I burped and cut a big gust, as we Navy pilots say. Tempe stopped a couple feet away pinching her nose shut. “Zeuus, Jack! Uu bight deed to thee a twagon toctor.” She extended the duffel to me with one finger of her other hand, as if she was afraid of getting cooties. I stripped off my shirt and pants and tugged on the clean clothes.

“Where did you come from?” I asked.

“I was on my way to Harmony and spotted your cruiser. I was just curi¾ Her voice trailed off.

“You were curious if I’d gone back to work like I said I would. You don’t have to worry, Tempe, darling.” I winced at my sarcastic tone. There was going to be hell to pay for treating the women I loved like this, but right now… “I stopped for coffee but after I meet with the ME, and have lunch with my mom, I plan to find Jordie wherever she is and let her flay my scales off. Then I have a case to solve.”

She didn’t miss that I hadn’t mentioned us. Things were not kosher in Denmark, or whatever that saying was, but I was making some baby steps toward taking my old life back. That was good, right?

“What’s up with the dumpster diving?”

I adjusted my gun belt on my hip and shrugged, “I was hungry.”

“Well, sorry I interrupted. Have you talked to Conor about this…um… hunger problem?” Tempe asked.

“Nope.” I spotted two nearly whole turkey legs lying on top of a trash bag and reached in snagging them—with two claws that shot out of my fingertips! “Shit.”

“What is it?” Tempe jumped forward, alarmed.

I held up my hand to show Tempe the drumsticks speared on a pair of five-inch claws. “How am I supposed to investigate when… claws pop out of my hands when I least expect it?”

“Um, well…” her lips twisted in a grimace. She shrugged.

“Right.” I took two chomps on the grimy, rotten legs then tossed them over my shoulder into the dumpster as I walked away, staring as the claws receded when they weren’t needed anymore. Which actually kind of rocked.

After ten long years, desperation has forced Luna Sinclair back to Los Lobos but nothing in her experience has prepared her for the heat that Pack Protector, Gunnar Redmond unleashes. Not everyone is happy about welcoming the daughter of one of the old alpha’s henchmen, home. Old wounds and secrets are exposed and to make matters worse, Drew Tao, the new alpha has reason to suspect that she might have revealed the packs most closely guarded secret when she escaped the crazed survivalist that had been keeping her prisoner.

None of that matters to Gunnar. He’s known Luna was his mate since finding her naked and shivering on pack land and he’ll do anything to keep her. With their wolves clawing to mate and danger closing in, anyone who wants to hurt her will have to go through him first.

Excerpt:

Gunnar Redmond’s blood still raced from his morning run, and the female’s musky scent hit him doubly hard. The haggard white wolf had been running in a straight line since she’d hit the perimeter a few minutes ago. Nothing ran that hard unless something chased it, and he didn’t see or smell anything following her. Too soon to call a warning for something he could probably handle himself, the pack protector kept well behind his quarry. The third time she stumbled, his wolf reached for her, nearly stopping him in his tracks.

The urge to catch her before she fell surprised him. He breathed in her scent once more, finding her human nature had become much stronger and stank of a fear so fierce it permeated the crisp autumn air. She’d transformed. The scent grew stronger. His quarry had stopped, perhaps to get her bearings.

Every wolf in Los Lobos knew the location of the pack land boundaries.

She was obviously lost and confused.

Downwind and hidden by a small stand of trees, Gunnar crouched on the crest of a small hill. Naked and filthy, twigs and leaves riddled her tangled mess of dark hair that reached past her shoulders. Mud streaked her bare arms and legs. Her thin flanks trembled as she rubbed her hands up and down her arms and looked around. She might not be very tall, but her obvious curves left no doubt she was all woman.

His wolf whined.

If he waited any longer, his wolf was going to behave inappropriately. Knocking her down so he could clean her and show his obvious interest probably wouldn’t win him any points. He stood and unbuttoned his shirt as he walked down the short incline.

The wind shifted, and she lifted her nose, turned, and froze. Her dark eyes widened, and he scented the fear she tried to hide. His size intimidated most, but her gaze had locked on his fingers, still working his shirt buttons free, and it occurred to him what the situation must look like.

Nice going, dumbass.

He let his arms drop and sighed. “Did you know you were trespassing?”

Her shoulders slumped. She stared at him a moment, and her mouth worked in a silent effort that seemed to frustrate her. Finally, her words tumbled like so much static from a radio. “Am I in Los Lobos?”

Gunnar nodded, and a shaky smile quirked one corner of her mouth.

“My name is Luna Sinclair, and I beg sanctuary.”

However, the beautiful, red haired woman who reminds him of his lost love, and who he suspects is working for a corrupt regime, represents a possible threat not only to the ship, but to his heart.

Marooned on an inhospitable planet, which seems to defy natural laws, the two are forced to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction to each other. How can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again and she has made a solemn pledge to destroy him?

My Review:

This book was an amazingly enjoyable read!  I had no idea that this was the third book of a series.  This was a fantastic stand alone that can be read without having read the first two of the series. I was immediately drawn to Cat (and Shifter) and Kerry.  The characters were so well written that the reader quickly developed a feeling for them.  I loved the twists and turns as they existed on the planet.  A fan of sci fi will just love this book.

I found myself lost a bit with the quick scene changes that were hard to understand, at first.  When the big surprise hit and there was a larger presence involved, I was struck by how quickly I found myself looking for Captain Picard and Q.  I am a HUGE fan of that series so this worked for me on many levels.

The action was fast paced and exciting, the growing yet begrudged feelings between Cat and Kerry was really well written.  This is a page turner and hard to put down.  The superb ending was just the icing on the cake and I would love to read the first two and cannot wait to read the 4th installment.  Super highly recommend this book to every fan of science fiction!

Columba and the Cat by Michael B. Caffrey @BarbCaffrey #bookreview #99cents #ASMSG

Columba and the Cat cover

Title: Columba and the Cat (The Columba Chronicles Book 1)

Author: Michael B. Caffrey

Genre: fantasy, magical realism, short story

Book Blurb:

Meet Princess Columba of Illinowa. She’s a magician, a scholar, and is currently the heir to the throne…but she wants no part of it. Because she’s royalty, she’s had trouble meeting men, and she’s tired of dealing with people in search of a title rather than herself.

Into her life comes a mysterious cat. She rescues the cat, takes him into the palace, and starts having unusual dreams — dreams of a man who understands her, cares about her, and loves her. Not her title.

Unbeknownst to Columba, the cat is a shapeshifter. He, too, is royal, albeit from far away. And he’s the man of her dreams…that is, when he’s not in the form of a cat.

Then the dream-man shows up, and the cat disappears. Columba must decide whether or not to believe in her dreams — and hope that somehow, the magical romance she’s found is here to stay.

Note to readers: This is a novella.

My Review:

Love comes in all shapes and sizes; you’ll never know when it’ll appear. This is the premise of Columba and the Cat, a fantastic romantic fantasy short story. Meet Princess Columba, heir to the throne and a studying magician. She’s an independent princess and dreams of practicing magic at the highest level. She has no interest in the kingdom of Illinowa and doesn’t want the throne. She’ll leave that to her younger (and most annoying) brother. Love, according to Columba, is a mystery.

One day, she rescues a cat from the clutches of the royal dogs. Even though her father, the king, has banned cats from the kingdom, she takes the cat back to her quarters and takes care of him. She calls him Cat and finds him delightful company. It’s as if he understands her and a bond soon forms between them.

Princess Columba has no idea that Cat is in fact a shapeshifting royal prince from a distant land. He comes to her in dreams as himself and courts her. He loves her for what’s inside, not her title.

When the time comes, will their love overcome all or will they be destined to be star-crossed lovers?

I loved this romantic fantasy story! Michael Caffrey weaves a love story unlike any other and I was instantly captivated. He wrote this back in 2003, long before shifter romances became popular. He was certainly ahead of his time and it’s a shame he passed away in 2004.

If you’re looking for a quick romance with fantasy/magical elements, grab this story. I read it during my lunch hour and the best part is that it’s only $.99! I’m looking forward to more stories in this series.

Favorite Character: Princess Columba is one of those delightful fantasy heroines that you, the reader, immediate love. She’s intelligent, funny and goes against what’s expected of her. She’s a princess yet she more freedom than most women in her position. I loved her thrill at discovering the lost cat and keeping it in her sleeping quarters, away from her father and brother. I smiled at her pursuing magicks and the way she talks to the cat as if he can understand her. I want more from her.

Favorite Quote:

“Oh my friend!” she whispered as Cat sniffed her breath and twitched his whiskers, “you won’t desert me now, will you?” ~ Columba

Author Biography:

Michael B. Caffrey (1958-2004) was many things — a writer. An editor. An artist. A contracts administrator . . . but if you asked him what was most important, he’d say none of those things.

Instead, he’d say being Barb Caffrey’s husband is all he’d ever aspired to be, granted with a twinkle in his eye and a whole lot of self-deprecating mockery besides.

In his lifetime, Michael sold only one story, this a co-written effort with his wife, Barb, in BEDLAM’S EDGE (edited by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill). After his untimely passing, other stories were sold to the Written Word Online Magazine and to e-Quill Publishing.

Two of those stories have been re-released as independent e-books here at Amazon, “A Dark and Stormy Night” and “On Westmount Station.” These are in his Joey Maverick universe, which takes place in the far-future Atlantean Union, and are works of military science fiction. (His wife, Barb, finished up the second story, and edited and smoothed out the first. But they are substantially Michael’s efforts.)

Michael wrote other things, too, including humorous fantasy, alternate history/fantasy, straight science fiction and more. But his first love was for military science fiction, which is why these stories have been the first to be re-released.

Michael was an effervescent presence, at once worldly wise and unassuming. He was a student of comparative religion, called himself a “Zen Sufi Pagan” and lived in San Francisco, California most of his adult life. He also loved to watch both professional baseball (Go, Giants!) and football (where the Joe Montana trade both irked and amused him, considering Steve Montana was waiting in the wings), was a witty and entertaining conversationalist, and was the type of guy who’d do anything for anyone without complaint.

Michael had many interests. He loved to read, especially sailing adventures (past, present and future), and thought of ships in space as just another type of sailing ship, albeit with more technology. He was a person of principle who believed the unexamined life was not worth living — but while you were examining your life, why not have as much fun as possible while you were going about all that dull and dreary stuff?

If you’re interested in reading more about Michael B. Caffrey, please stop by Barb Caffrey’s Blog anytime as she often discusses Michael’s influence on her life and career, and does her best to keep his spirit alive and well.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Hello, baby.” The familiar nickname purred from him, unbidden, but once spoken, unable to be retrieved.

A long time ago, that endearment might have once curled her lips into the most beautiful smile. Now it just served to make her eyes flash with anger. “Don’t you baby me, Caleb. I have no interest in talking to you.”

“I get that, and I don’t blame you.”

“How magnanimous of you,” she retorted dryly.

“You look good.” Again, he spoke without thinking—or filtering. I’d better start watching my words, or I’m going to get myself in trouble.

Too late. He was in trouble the moment he came seeking her.

At his praise, she sucked in a breath, and a slight flush heightened the color in her cheeks. “You look good, too,” she said.

At her obvious lie, his lips tightened. “I’m very much aware of how I look. No need to coddle me.” The burns had left a scar, not just on his skin but his psyche. Even if she could ignore the one, he couldn’t ignore the other.

“Coddle? I can assure you that would be last thing I’d do for you.”

Renny always did have that irritating tendency of telling the truth, but even if she didn’t find his scars ugly, that changed nothing.

“As you can see, I’m back.”

“So everyone keeps telling me,” she mumbled. “As if I care. I stopped caring a long time ago.”

A lie that hit him hard and low. She still feels something for me.

Yeah, lots of anger.

“I know you hate me, and I just wanted to tell you that I’m going to do my best to stay away from you.” Even if all he wanted was to stick to her like honey on a bear.

Her brow arched. “So far you’re not doing a good job staying away.”

“I thought I should talk to you because I figure we’d bump into each other again at some point, and I didn’t want it to be awkward.”

“Oh, because this isn’t awkward at all.” Renny rolled her eyes. “You’ve said hello. I know you’re back. I also don’t care, so if you don’t mind, there’s the door. Use it.” She turned her back to him.

Oddly enough, though, he didn’t want to leave. As a matter of fact, all he really wanted to do was snare her in his arms and squeeze her tight. Tell her how much he’d missed her and wished things could have been different. He wanted to peel that tiny shirt from her and cover her body in his. Surround her in his scent. Claim her and make her off-limits to others.

The time apart hadn’t cooled the attraction on his part at all, but he wouldn’t act on it.

Mustn’t mark her and claim her and keep. She deserves better.

Thing was, he needed to make sure she hated him because, if she softened at all, like she did now with her body trembling slightly, he might not be able to resist. “So do you strip for money on top of waitressing? Or do you just strut your shit for every dick with a few dollars?”

She whirled on him. “Are you seriously insulting me here?”

“Just questioning your choice in careers.” Because he knew she was capable of being more than a waitress in a strip club. “Couldn’t you find something a little more—”

“More what? Morally sound? More clothed? Perhaps you’d like me to walk two feet behind men and curtsy when they speak to me?”

“Now you’re exaggerating. I’m just saying a nice girl like you should have higher aspirations than working in a titty bar.”

“There is nothing wrong with working here. And that’s a priceless thing to say, given you came here in the first place. If this place is so disgusting, then what are you doing here?”

Getting a beer? But he didn’t have time to voice his reason. Renny was still talking, her voice reaching an incredulous pitch.

“You’ve got a lot of nerve, Caleb Bourdeaux, coming back into town after everything that’s happened and acting as if I owe you anything or give a fiddle what you think.”

Once again, he just couldn’t seem to keep his mouth shut. “Maybe you should give a damn what I think since no one else seems to be. You deserve a job that doesn’t require you dressing like this. For fuck’s sake, Renny, your shirt is so tight I can see your damned bra.”

“Are my bralines bothering you? Let me fix that.”

He could only gape in shock as her hands slid under the fabric of her top, and in moments, she’d managed to unsnap her bra and slide her arms through the straps. She tossed the scrap of fabric at him.

It hit him in the chest, but he clasped it before it could fall. The cottony material still held the warmth of her body. Was it him or the beast that lifted it for a sniff?

Vanilla. Delicious. And tempting, just like the buds of her nipples clinging to the material of her shirt that drew his gaze.

I am in so much trouble.

A trouble he couldn’t seem to stop from snowballing.

“What are you doing with my bra?” she asked as he stuffed it in his pocket.

“Keeping it.”

“For what?”

Nothing could have stopped his slow, lazy smile. “Inspiration.”

Author Biography:

Hello, my name is Eve and I am a Canadian author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens.

I should warn you that I possess a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. I enjoy strong alpha males, and shifters. Lots of big, overprotective shifters. I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane…with pleasure. Do you like something a little darker? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.

I love to write, and while I don’t always know what my mind is going to come up with next, I can promise it will be fun, probably humorous and most of all romantic, because I love a happily ever after.

Title: Cursed Mates

Book Blurb:

“What if you were honor bound to kill the man you love?”

Nick Radford is a reluctant werewolf who’s been fighting the Beast within for nearly 500 years. He’s never killed a human, but the Beast is gaining strength and Nick may not be able to ward off his inner demon much longer.
Kyla Yaeger is an elite were-hunter with a scarred past. Her life’s mission is to slay the werewolves that slaughtered her parents. Her quest has brought her to Maine, where she’s been summoned to destroy the werewolf terrorizing the quaint little village of Heavensent. The last thing she needs is to get distracted by her mysterious—not to mention hunky—new neighbor, Nick Radford.
By the time Kyla learns Nick is her target, she’s already fallen for him, making her task of killing him that much harder. She is torn between her love for him and her duty to kill her sworn enemy. Nick fights his forbidden love for Kyla, knowing she is duty-bound to kill him. Kyla and Nick must join forces to fight an even bigger threat—one that will destroy all humanity. Only by their combined powers, can they destroy the evil and bring an end to a centuries old curse.

Exclusive Excerpt:

There was nothing angelic about Heavensent, Maine. Kyla Yaeger felt evil all around her, watching, waiting. A hell of a lot more was going on here than one werewolf. Her stiletto heels clicked on the sidewalk as she hurried up the street, but she couldn’t outpace the feeling of malice. She had to block it out. Nothing could distract her from her mission. As an elite were-hunter, she had one job—slaughter the werewolf haunting this strange little town.

Anticipation of the next hunt pulsed through her. She hungered for it as an addict craved the next hit. Maybe someday she’d find the peace she longed for . . . but not until she had vengeance.

The fresh smell of pine from the surrounding woods wafted by on the slight breeze. The aroma brought the memory of that hunt in the Adirondacks. Foreboding chilled her. Her breath caught. Would she meet the black wolf again?

This time, she wouldn’t miss.

Quickening her steps, Kyla reached the homey-looking restaurant, a welcome touch of normalcy in this place tainted by wickedness. As she grabbed for the door handle, someone on the other side pulled the door open. Losing her balance, she wobbled in the entrance as a hand cupped her elbow, steadying her. An electric charge coursed up her arm.

“Sorry.” The deep voice was definitely male, with a trace of a British accent, and so close to her ear she could feel his warm breath. She inhaled his scent of spice, familiar, yet exotic.

The timbre of his voice ignited a spark of recognition in her. She was eye level with a very masculine chest covered by a black T-shirt that stretched over hard muscles and defined biceps. Slowly raising her gaze, she met deep topaz eyes—eyes touched with sadness that spoke of pain and unbearable loss. Thick, black hair framed the rugged beauty of his face. The large, jagged scar on his neck saved him from being too perfect. She didn’t know him, yet she felt as if she did.

How odd.

He stood holding the door, not moving. The awareness in his eyes gradually changed to shock, then fear. Rooted to the spot, Kyla couldn’t look away.

A roaring noise filled her head, and pain stabbed her temples, signaling a vision. The man, the restaurant, the street wavered. Disjointed scenes flickered before her. A tall man, his face shadowed, his long, black hair blowing in a rush of wind, stood before an empty grave. She felt his crushing grief as if it were her own.

She blinked, and the vision left her. And so had the mysterious stranger. The restaurant door closed slowly behind her, leaving her alone on the sidewalk. She looked both ways down the street, but the man seemed to have disappeared.

“Hey, I thought you were going to get us a table. I found a parking spot a few blocks away.” Todd, her best friend and business partner, sauntered toward her. He frowned. “What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost, or maybe a werewolf.”

“I don’t know what I saw.” A shiver ran through her. Had the man with the topaz eyes caused her vision?

***

Nick Radford drove his Jag fast, too fast, along the winding road that led from the village up to his cliff-top mansion.

He rounded a sharp curve and glimpsed the churning sea. One tire hit gravel and spun. Fighting for control, he propelled the car back onto the road. Too bad he couldn’t control his thoughts as easily.

Who was the woman at the restaurant? Her intriguing image flashed into his mind. Long, black hair and pale, fineboned face. When he’d looked into those clear, green eyes, recognition, longing, and lust had shaken him. And then fear. But of what? She couldn’t be real. It was the only answer. She’d been a dream. Or had it been a cruel trick of fate to remind him of all he’d lost, all he couldn’t have?

The anguish that had been his constant companion for almost five hundred years burned in his gut. A bitter laugh escaped him.

He jerked the car to a stop in front of his house and jumped out. Trying to banish the picture of the black-haired beauty, he took the stone steps leading to the old manse two at a time. He knew he fought a losing battle, and his own sense of helplessness infuriated him.

He entered the cavernous living room, threw his keys on the nearest table, strode to the sideboard, and poured a glass of wine. He drank it in one gulp, then poured another.

Too restless to sit, he stalked to the window and stared at the darkening sky. His reflection looked solemnly back at him—the same face he’d known for over five centuries. The thick, black hair and high cheekbones hadn’t changed, but the gold eyes were now tarnished, light and hope long gone.
