Has stress got you in a chokehold? 

 

Remember one important thing —

 

God will never give you anything you can’t handle so don’t stress.

 

When I’m faced with a problem or a deadline, I tend to stress. It takes MR N giving me a shake along with some encouraging words to remind me that I can handle whatever is going on. I’ve been to hell and back several times (you’d think I’d be on their frequent flyer miles program) and the one thing I learned is that God gives me an added boost of strength when I need it most.

 

Listen, life is filled with wave after wave of disappointments, setbacks and obstacles. They’ll knock you on your bum and just when you think you don’t have the strength to handle another wave, it washes over you. Somehow (and who knows where the strength comes from) we get to our feet and face the wave head-on. We’re wobbly on our feet and utterly exhausted but we’re upright. That’s the key to handling stress: when you fall down, get back up. Realize that you have untapped courage and toughness, just waiting to be used.

Are you taking care of yourself, making sure your soul is fed and you’re getting the help you need?

 

Today is World Mental Health Day and this year, the focus is on mental health at work. Stress, especially work stress, is one of the main causes of illness and sudden death these days. People are taking less vacations and working more.

 

I remember after 9/11, I struggled at work just to get through my shift. A co-worker and friend of mine suggested that I ask for a couple of days off for my mental health. She told me I wasn’t taking care of myself properly and if I didn’t start taking care of myself, I wouldn’t be around long. I took a hard look at myself and she was right. I took some time off and it helped me tremendously.

 

We all need to take care of ourselves. If the stress is mounting and your body is feeling rundown, maybe it’s time to take a Mental Health day off of work. Your body and soul are the only ones you get so please, I beg you, take care of yourself. Seek help and take steps necessary to achieve wellness. Like the quote above states, your soul is like a beautiful flower and needs Light to bloom.

Time management is something that each of us struggles with.  We have a never-ending list of things to do and places to go.

 

Today, I have a lot to do and not enough hours in the day to complete them. How am I not running around screaming like Chicken Little? I manage my time.

 

Read the above quote.

 

Sounds moronic, right? But it happens to millions of people every day.

 

I take full advantage of each and every minute of my day.  I have a list of things to do and I stick to it.  When there is a little lag time, I try to incorporate two things at once.

 

Need help with managing your time? Get a daily planner, write down what you need to accomplish in the day and as you complete each task check it off. You will feel so much better than running yourself ragged.

 

Manage your time or it will manage you.

Are you struggling to concentrate and in need of a break? Maybe you need a prescription of relaxation.

 

I have just returned from a much-needed vacation and my mind, body and soul are refreshed. Stress isn’t even in the same county as me and it’s all because both MR N and I were able to relax. No devices, no emails, just the two of us at a resort soaking up the sun and spending time together. We laughed at the sheer amount of walking we did, not to mention going up and down the curved staircase in our two-floor suite.

 

Don’t think you can spare the time for a vacation or even a few days off? 

 

Listen, we’re all crazy-busy and our calendars are overflowing with all the things we need to do but please take my advice and schedule some relaxation time. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune and it doesn’t have to be for 11 days. Do what works best for you and your finances.

 

Relaxation is so important for your health (both physical and mental). Shut your brain off from the stress and turmoil of your life. Soak in the relaxation and let your body and mind rejuvenate itself. Trust me, you’ll thank me for the advice.

Feeling overwhelmed? 

 

This is the last week before vacation and both MR N and I are feeling overwhelmed. The stress is high, so high in fact that I’ve developed a skin rash (Hives). I can’t get away from the stress and honestly, all I want to do is escape to our summer vacation a few days early. Since that isn’t possible, I deal with the stress the best way I know how: I follow the above 5 tips.

 

Stress affects us all in different ways and it’s how we cope that matters. Don’t internalize the stress but release it. Go for a walk or get some exercise. Take deep breaths. Realize you can only control what you can control. Eat healthy. Be gentle with yourself and keep your temper in check (no flying off the handle). 

 

Once we take these steps to deal with stress, we won’t feel so overwhelmed. Stress will take a vacation, at least for a little while, and that is the best feeling in the world.

Are you ready to be unstoppable?

 

Life is hard. There are times when work, family, finances, friends, etc. all try their best to stop us from achieving our goals. There are times when it takes great effort to just get out of bed in the morning. Worry and stress circle above our heads like greedy vultures, hoping to steal our joy.

 

How do you keep the vultures at bay? By choosing to be fearless, strong and courageous, you’re shooting down worry and stress.

 

Is it really that easy?

 

Yes, it is! Listen, even I deal with worry and stress. It’s not fun and I get overwhelmed, especially when it comes to family and friends. They’re a whole different type of stress. But when I hear the flapping of wings soaring far above my head and the screeching call, I close my eyes and repeat my inner mantra. “I am strong, like Wonder Woman. I can do this. Fear has nothing on me. I’m going to be victorious.”

 

Choose right now to be unstoppable. Stop letting the vultures eat away at you, one piece at a time. Speak your own inner mantra and watch the worry and stress disappear.

Are you taking time away from work, family and obligations?

We’re all living very busy lives. We have things/people/activities clamoring for our attention. Whether it’s our phone ringing off the hook, text messages pining our device or our boss emailing in the middle of the night, it’s hard to escape it all. We feel strung out and exhausted.

Find some solitude.

“What? Is she crazy?” I know you’re thinking this but hear me out.

Turn off your device and take some time away to rest, rejuvenate and recenter yourself.

I co-run (with MR N) a business from home and it would be easy for me to work around the clock. I mean, I have clients from all over the world and they email me 24/7. I know that if I did that, I would be a stress monster and no one wants to see that. Instead, I work from 6:30 am until 5:30 pm. I clock in and out like a day job. I take a 30 minute lunch and have a few breaks during the day.

Why do I do this? I need time away to spend quality time with my husband (Mr. N) and to rest.

Life is in constant motion, like the ocean, filled with low and high tides. Even the ocean rests (low tide). Seek solitude, even if it is for a few minutes a day. You’ll be more productive and less stressed.

Are you making time for what matters?

Our lives are scheduled down to the last second. We’re so busy with work, family, activities, sports, etc. but I’m here with a very important question.

Are you making time for what matters?

This week has been chaotic for me. Between work, our business, household duties and family obligations, I’ve run myself ragged. My feet are swollen, my back aches and I’m exhausted. One thing has gotten me through this week: quality time with MR N. Every night, we sit together on the love seat and watch tv/dvds. I curl up next to him, close my eyes and take deep breaths. I let everything go from the day and just soak up MR N’s love.

No matter what’s going on in your life or how busy you may be, make time for what matters. It may be quality time by yourself, your significant other, your best friend, your pet, your kids; what counts is carving out time to be with that someone.

Make an appointment in your planner and never cancel. Prioritize your time so you can spend precious moments with what matters to you. It’ll be your oasis, trust me.

Make time for what matters… your very life may just depend on it.

Fatigue Makes Cowards of Us All so Keep in Shape! #inspiration #stress #TuesdayMotivation

Is fatigue your constant companion these days?

Last week was a difficult week for MR N and me. Work was crazy and both of us were puddles of goo by the time the long weekend came. We took it easy and relaxed on Friday and Saturday. We were almost back to our old selves when Sunday came and we hosted the whole family for Easter. Exhaustion and fatigue set in again. We needed two more days off. Instead, we’re back to work and counting the hours until this coming weekend.

Sound familiar?

Fatigue invades the brain and body like a parasite and if you’re not healthy (physically, I mean), your body will just give up. Both MR N and I are in excellent physical shape, walking 25 km (15 miles) per week. MR N does over 500 push-ups every morning and I do 50 bicycle exercises every afternoon. If our bodies weren’t well-oiled machines, I believe we’d be worse off. Our bodies battle the fatigue and yes, we’re tired, but we haven’t given up.

Listen, stress has a way of beating us up and one of the sure-fire ways to combat it is to exercise. Go for a walk, bike ride, run; play a game like basketball, baseball, softball, hockey, football, soccer. Not only will the fresh air energize you, your focus will be on whatever you’re doing and not on whatever is stressing you out.

Take my advice and battle fatigue with healthy bodies. The exhaustion period will be shorter and you’ll be back to feeling 100% in no time!

Feeling stressed today?

Me, too!

We’re all busy and stress is building up inside. Our stomachs clench, our skin is clammy and anxious thoughts run rampant.

STOP!

Take five deep breaths right now. Empty your mind of all those thoughts and concentrate on your breathing. Imagine that stress washing off your body with each breath.

Now, repeat after me: I’m in control of myself and my feelings. Today is Friday and I’ve got this. I’m going to kick butt!

#1 stress reliever for me is the activity I’ve just described. It centers me and allows me to deal with any kind of stress.

Today we’re going to talk about love of the outdoors.

I love being outside. I think it stems from my nature walks I used to take with my mom. We didn’t have a lot of money when I was young but that didn’t stop us from having grand adventures.

Every Saturday morning, we’d head out to the library. We’d spend most of the morning reading books and deciding which books to check out. In the afternoon, if the weather allowed us, we’d go for a nature hike. We’d listen to the birds singing, try to identify various flowers and trees, explore new paths and have a terrific time. She’d teach me about the importance of nature and the world around us.

Those memories molded me into the nature-loving person I am today. Every morning, I go outdoors for my walk. When my to-do list is overwhelming and work’s stressing me out, a walk outside helps center myself. I watch the leaves rustle in the breeze, listen to the birds singing and become one with nature.

Don’t Panic! Everything’s A-OK #inspiration #ThursdayThoughts

Last night I let panic sweep over me. I was doing the dishes when suddenly my left arm went numb and I dropped a plastic measuring cup. I tried to pick it up and my fingers wouldn’t close around it.

My old nemesis, panic, put me in a choke hold. Panicky thoughts raced around inside my head.

Oh my gawd, am I having a heart attack?

What’s wrong with my arm?

I should call out to MR N but he’d probably think I was being silly.

Did I break my arm today somehow?

I need my arm to run our business.

MR N came wandering into the kitchen to get more drink when he found me in the grips of a panic attack. In a soothing voice, he talked me through it. No, it was not a heart attack and no I didn’t break my arm. I just strained it.

When something unexpected happens, do you panic? Does your brain imagine the worst possible scenarios for what’s going on?

I’ve been battling the panic monster for as long as I can remember. My first reaction when I’m stressed is to panic. It’s only been in the last five years that I’ve been able to breathe through a situation without panicking. I even made it a goal of mine for 2016 to not panic so much.

So, this sudden onslaught of panic last night caught me off-guard. I got through it thanks to my beloved MR N. But it also reaffirmed my need to stop panic in its tracks.

Panic causes tunnel vision. Calm acceptance of danger allows us to more easily assess the situation and see the options.

This is so true. When I’m in the midst of a panicky situation, I can’t see past my own nose. But when I calmly accept what’s going on and try to figure out a solution, then I’m able to handle anything.

If I can do it, so can you. Give that panic monster the heave-ho and wear a cape of calm. We can handle anything thrown our way, as long as we don’t panic.

We all have stress and the number one question I get asked is this: how do I deal with stress at work?

My grandfather’s voice echos in my head.

“Prevention is the best cure, especially when it comes to stress.”

He’s a wise man and he knows what he’s talking about. After working as a high school teacher for over twenty years, he retired and started a janitorial business. He built it from the ground up and was very successful.

Stressful situations happen to each of us and how we handle it determines if stress comes pouring out of us. I like the graphic above and my favorite way to prevent stress is to go for a walk. Getting outside for a breath of fresh air does wonders for my mental well-being.

Are you taking care of yourself?

It’s a super busy time of the year for me. If I didn’t take care of myself, I’d be a mess. The stress alone would chew my insides to bits.

In order to combat stress, I make time throughout the day to relax, recharge and rejuvenate. Every hour or so, I get up from my desk and walk around. I go sit out on my solarium and watch the trees sway in the breeze. In the evening, I relax with MR N. I get a good night’s sleep (7.5 hours a night).

Ever Feel Like a Circus Sideshow? #inspiration #motivation #organization

Ever feel like you’re a circus act? Are you juggling all of the balls in the air or spinning plates, hoping that one doesn’t fall?

I sure do and this week, four of my plates came crashing down. I was oozing stress and when the plates started to crash around my head, I felt so defeated.

Why wasn’t I able to do this?

I’m organized. I have a planner and every minute of the day is scheduled.

It took my confessing all to MR N on Wednesday for me to realize what was at the heart of the matter.

I had taken on too much and the time had come to reset my priorities.

Confession: I have a big heart and I love helping people. When people come to me, it’s hard for me to say no.

I realized today that the time has come to set up some boundaries and to restore balance to my life.

No matter what your line of work is, you need balance. It’s okay to say no if someone asks for your help. Be kind in your reply and let them know you have a lot going on right now.

Say this to yourself when you are feeling stressed and off-balance. Peace will take over and you will be gliding across that tightrope of life.
