Why Don’t They Publish Original #Books Anymore? N. N. Light Investigates! #FridayReads

books

Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Book Round-Up. I’ve been thinking a lot about books and books I’ve read in my lifetime lately and I wonder where all the original books have gone. The bestseller lists are littered with the same old stories. It seems like every book I’ve read is similar to another I’ve read. Where is the creativity? Where is the originality? I really wish, as a reader, I could discover a book that gave me all sorts of feelings (both happy and sad) and the aha moment.

So here’s my top five books that are the most creative, most original books I’ve had the pleasure to read. I’d love to hear the books that did the same for you so please share in the comments below.

The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings (the Hobbit / the Fellowship of the Ring / the Two Towers / the Mass Market by J.R.R. Tolkien  (Author)

Immerse yourself in Middle-earth with Tolkien’s classic masterpiece, telling the complete story of Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits’ epic encounters with Gandalf, Gollum, dragons and monsters, in the quest to destroy the One Ring. When they were first published, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings became instant classics. Treasured by readers young and old, these works of sweeping fantasy, steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness have sold more than 150 million copies around the world. This new boxed set, published to mark the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, offers readers a new opportunity to discover Tolkien’s remarkable world of Middle-earth and to follow the complete story of Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits’ part in the epic quest for the Ring – beginning with Bilbo’s fateful visit from Gandalf and culminating in the dramatic climax between Frodo and Gollum atop Mount Doom and Bilbo’s departure to the Grey Havens.

My Reaction – When I first read these immortal classics, I was blown away by the action, adventure, magic and characters. I loved how real the characters and Middle Earth were to me as a reader and while many have tried to imitate Tolkien, a few have come close but nothing as original as this.

A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux  (Author)

New York Times bestselling author Jude Deveraux will capture your heart with signature classic novel, a time-travel romance featuring a present-day heroine and a dashing hero from the sixteenth century!

Abandoned by a cruel fate, lovely Dougless Montgomery lies weeping upon a cold tombstone in an English church. Suddenly, the most extraordinary man appears. It is Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck…and according to his tombstone he died in 1564.

Drawn to his side by a bond so sudden and compelling it overshadows reason, Dougless knows that Nicholas is nothing less than a miracle: a man who does not seek to change her, who finds her perfect, fascinating, just as she is. What Dougless never imagined was how strong the chains are that tie them to the past…or the grand adventure that lay before them.

Hailed worldwide as one of the most romantic novels of all time, A Knight in Shining Armor is “a glorious love story that spans centuries, worlds, and souls. It is the epitome of every woman’s fantasy” (Chicago Daily Herald).

My Reaction – I know it’s hard to not run into familiar tropes when it comes to romance but none of the time travel romances rival what I felt when I first read this book. Vivid descriptive narration with a sweeping romance spanning centuries make this an original.

Tell No One: A Novel by Harlan Coben  (Author)

For Dr. David Beck, the loss was shattering. And every day for the past eight years, he has relived the horror of what happened. The gleaming lake. The pale moonlight. The piercing screams. The night his wife was taken. The last night he saw her alive.

Everyone tells him it’s time to move on, to forget the past once and for all. But for David Beck, there can be no closure. A message has appeared on his computer, a phrase only he and his dead wife know. Suddenly Beck is taunted with the impossible—that somewhere, somehow, Elizabeth is alive.

Beck has been warned to tell no one. And he doesn’t. Instead, he runs from the people he trusts the most, plunging headlong into a search for the shadowy figure whose messages hold out a desperate hope.

But already Beck is being hunted down. He’s headed straight into the heart of a dark and deadly secret—and someone intends to stop him before he gets there.

My Reaction – Suspense books are tricky to rate its originality because they all go by a certain formula. What makes this book stand out is the way the author slowly draws out the plot. He creates panic in the reader and you have to keep reading to see what happens. Beck is one of the greatest characters ever written and even with Coben’s future work, he wasn’t able to capture the magic of this book.

Ballet Shoes: A Story of Three Children on the Stage by Noel Streatfeild  (Author)

Pauline, was rescued from a shipwreck as a baby. She longs to be an actress.

Petrova, is a Russian orphan. She is happiest when playing with cars and engines.

Polly was handed over with just a pair of ballet shoes to her name. If she could, she would dance all day!

But one thing they DO have in common is, that with money running out at home and Great Uncle Matthew missing, the sisters want to stay together. Whatever it takes.

As they prepare for a dazzling life on stage, the dreams and fears of the fossil girls are about to come true…

My Reaction – Children’s books today are rife with angst and strife and I long for the days of original children’s fiction made to illicit dreams of little girls everywhere. I so wanted to be a dancer when I was little and I got to live out my dream when reading this book. More books need to inspire kids through unique characters and a little conflict (not tons of conflict).

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain  (Author)

Kitchen Confidential reveals what Bourdain calls “twenty-five years of sex, drugs, bad behavior and haute cuisine.”

Last summer, The New Yorker published Chef Bourdain’s shocking, “Don’t Eat Before Reading This.” Bourdain spared no one’s appetite when he told all about what happens behind the kitchen door. Bourdain uses the same “take-no-prisoners” attitude in his deliciously funny and shockingly delectable book, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike. From Bourdain’s first oyster in the Gironde, to his lowly position as dishwasher in a honky tonk fish restaurant in Provincetown (where he witnesses for the first time the real delights of being a chef); from the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, to drug dealers in the east village, from Tokyo to Paris and back to New York again, Bourdain’s tales of the kitchen are as passionate as they are unpredictable. Kitchen Confidential will make your mouth water while your belly aches with laughter. You’ll beg the chef for more, please.

My Reaction – When this first came out, the world was shocked. Someone telling the truth about what happens in the restaurant industry? Scandalous and oh so irresistible to read!  I want to read original stories about real life happening to real people. No need to add extra intrigue, conflict and drama because I want an unvarnished account. It’s why I love reading blogs nowadays. Bloggers tell it like it is without a filter and that’s what I crave.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00007]

Title: Never Say Never from Snowbound in Havenport anthology

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Pam Dawes has always done what was expected by her high-society parents and friends. Look where that got her. Husband number two is quickly becoming a bad memory. She’s through with men. Never again.

Mikhail Ivanovich Stephanov, doesn’t care what happens to himself—revenge for his family is all that matters.

When a freak storm brings down communications, Pam’s the only one who can help the mysterious Russian who washes up on her dock. Sparks reignite when they realize they’d met years ago. Mik’s more than willing to put his vendetta aside, until Pam becomes the target of the Russian thugs that have infiltrated Havenport’s coast. He’d die to keep her safe.

They’d both sworn to never love again. Will they learn to never say never?

My Review:

A huge snowstorm has hit Havenport and everyone is hunkering down. Pam is safe and sound in her house when her dock alarm wakes her up from a deep sleep. She gets bundled up and goes down to investigate. After many tries, she manages to maneuver the lost boat into her boathouse. She discovers a frozen, wet handsome man aboard. She brings him inside and offers him hot comfort food and warm clothes. There’s something dangerously familiar about her sexy Russian companion but she can’t place him.

Mik’s a man on a mission and he swore he would never love again, not after Natasha. But he feels his walls slipping away every time he loses himself in Pam’s gaze. Can he reveal his murderous past to her or is it too late for redemption? Two Russian adversaries hunt him down and put Pam’s life in jeopardy. Is history repeating itself or is it time to let love in?

I loved this romantic suspense by Ruth A. Casie. She has a special gift for amping up the suspense while making you swoon at the same time. In this story, she reveals two people swearing off love due to past hurts. But love doesn’t listen and instead whispers, “never say never.” Mystery, Russian spies, a blizzard all combine with sizzling chemistry in this romantic suspense. A must read and highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote:

“No. Never again. Her life was fine. She was fine. No longer would she assume the part of the victim. Heroine. That’s the role she wanted.”

Happy Veterans Day to our service men and women past and present.

I can’t express what the sacrifices our military and their families make when they make the extreme commitment to enter the service mean to me and my family. Two or three days a year is not enough to properly show our support.

My Men of Honor series celebrates men and women who value integrity, honor, and duty through service to their country and communities. The heroes are former and current military, law enforcement and emergency responders and heroines are their equals in love and more.

Blurb:

His lost memories might get her killed…

You’ve killed him, Bad Brenna taunted. Brenna looked down the steps at the man lying motionless in the tropical downpour. I told you that silly phobia would get you in trouble if you didn’t get a grip.

Brenna knew she was right, knew it was exactly why Bad Brenna existed, to help her cope with the trauma that had turned her into a scared rabbit whenever lightning was in the forecast. But her anxiety over the approaching storm had been magnified by another premonition. Usually, it meant someone was about to die. Had she been the means, this time, of fulfilling her own prophecy? As always there were no clear answers. She needed to start trusting her sixth sense if she was ever going to get rid of Bad Brenna. First step— rescue her victim from the storm.

What happened? He’d been dodging the lightning, fighting the wind and rain, looking for a place to hide…when he’d seen the faint glow in the distance. There was no answer at the door so he’d broken in, entered… and there she was, a beautiful Valkyrie. Wielding her sword, she screamed as she struck him—for no good reason—and then everything went black. Everything.

Excerpt:

The next rumble of thunder surprised her with its strength. Her fingers moved faster with nervous energy as she kept her eyes glued to the monitor. Anxiety traveled along her nerves like the electrical conduits in the Electron Molecule Deformulator. The memories wouldn’t be far behind.

In that instant, a magnesium-white light turned her living room into an overexposed movie negative and she found herself on the floor, hands pressed to her eyes for agonizing seconds as a mighty trunk split, striking other trees and sending chips and limbs like missiles against the side of the house. A picture tumbled off the shelf by the fireplace and hit the floor as the house shook.

The crashing seemed to go on forever, followed by lingering thunder. Throughout the clamor and chaos, Brenna held her breath, as if merely breathing would bring calamity down on her. As if not breathing could keep the beast from finding her.

When silence reigned, she raised her head.

To black velvet darkness. “Crap.”

In the dark, the storm’s power was more terrifying, a constant barrage of light that bounced off every surface, attacking her senses and her already precarious sanity. She pushed herself off the floor and stumbled to the bedroom. With her eyes half covered with her fingers, she retrieved the one flickering candle in the ruby glass holder from the bedside table that had been her grandmother’s.

By its meager light she hurried to the kitchen, shielding the flame with her other palm. She sat the holder on the counter and rummaged through the drawers, finding garbage bag ties, wayward screws, and bottle caps, but no candles.

A loud boom coincided with another flash of light. She counted, “One thousand one, one thous… uhnn.” With the next flash and simultaneous crack of thunder she hit her elbow on the kitchen counter. “Brenna. If anyone knows this is merely a thunderstorm, you do.” Even if it was a bad one.

Right. When was the last time a thunderstorm was a mere anything to her? Brenna knew the answer. To the year, the season, the minute. The memories came at her like leaves in a microburst and she pressed her hands against her head as if to still them.

Something hit the porch and Brenna froze. With her back to the kitchen wall, she took a deep breath, repeating her therapist’s rant, er, chant. Empty your mind as you inhale. Or was it exhale? He’d given up on her after the meditation class.

The front door rattled again and her litany continued. “Nothing to fear. It’s just the wind. No sane person would be out in this weather—unless—” Her mind flashed to a horror movie commercial, and her breathing stopped.

“Quit that!” She shook her head and did a mental reset, peering around the opening to the front door. Nothing.

“See?” Feeling silly, she wiped her palms on her jeans, spread her hands out in front of her, “Steady…” but flinched at another deafening boom. The ruby glass holder hit the floor and extinguished the light. She squeezed her eyes shut and felt the wetness of hysteria on her cheeks. Once again she attempted to reset, dashed the tears away and let the other Brenna, Fearless Brenna who’d peeked her head out recently, give the fearful one a pep talk. The damn lightning’s outside. Stop this craziness and get the candles.

Nodding, she edged toward the old trunk, just as something brushed the front door. She whirled. The apparition on the other side of her front door froze her in place.

Starkly backlit by the storm’s intermittent light, was the dark shadow of a man. A menacing form, it moved back and forth like a shadow boxer. Her scream was absorbed by a loud blast of thunder as she dove to the floor, her eyes locked on the cabin’s entrance. In the flickering light the phantom’s raised arm looked like a coiled snake about to strike.

Crab-walking backwards toward the couch, she glanced around for a weapon. Her eyes locked on the fireplace implements. She seized the iron shovel and scurried toward the door, sliding down against the wall under the front window. She was close to hyperventilating. Had he seen her?

Her lungs were gripped by an invisible fist. Calm. She had to calm down or he’d be able to hear her heart pounding against her chest. Even with the storm outside, her blood thumped in her ears. Her breath came in noisy pants.

Broken glass spilled from the door’s window pane near her feet and her fingernails dug into to her palms as she gripped the iron tighter in a batter’s grip. Sliding up the wall behind the door, she flattened her body against it as more jagged pieces of glass fell to the floor. All her attention was on the hand reaching through the opening.

Unlocking the door.

Turning the handle.

Like a seasoned batter aiming for the strike zone, Brenna timed her attack. As the large figure stepped across the threshold she swung, the shovel connecting with a sickening thwack against his forehead. With a grunt, he staggered out the door and down the porch steps to lie still in the heavy downpour.

Excerpt

***

It was late and Drew nursed a glass of watered down whiskey as he stared at his reflection in the mirrored wall behind the bar. He looked like a renegade. The scraggly, black beard and the tinted lenses hid what was on the outside.

Why do bars have so much mirror space? True, he could see what was going on behind him, as well as anyone who approached him. He hoped to see the man who would be his connection in his current investigation. He could also see too much of himself, which wasn’t much help tonight. He couldn’t stop the mental reflections any more than he could the ones in the mirror.

Not since he left home had he worn glasses, except when he needed a disguise. He wasn’t the skinny wimp he’d been in high school or even during his first years at Georgia Tech. Now few men dared tease the muscular man who filled the black tee shirt and stretched the short sleeves rolled a notch over the bulge of his upper arm. The forearm he saw in the mirror looked lethal as veins bulged each time he flexed his hand. Drew was a man to be feared and respected. He’d worked hard to become that man.

The first year in the army was responsible for most of the transformation to the undercover cop who answered to the name Drew. He answered to many aliases. Tonight he answered to Spider, as the sinister tattoo on one forearm would suggest.

Mary M

Author Biography

Mary Marvella has been a storyteller for as long as she can remember. She made up the “Let’s Pretend” situations for the neighborhood kids. The arrival of the book mobile was as exciting as hearing the music of the ice cream truck, more, since she could check out books but seldom had the money for the ice cream. Her parents preferred letting her walk to the corner store for less money. She still pinches pennies.

When Mary’s daughter was small, story time often meant Mama made up stories. Now retired from teaching the classic works of the masters, Mary writes her own stories and reads modern novels.

Georgia raised, she writes stories with a Southern flair.

The Broker by New York Times Bestseller @JohnGrisham #bookreview #thriller #books

The Broker

Title: The Broker

Author: John Grisham

Genre: Thriller, Mystery and Suspense

Book Blurb:

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In his final hours in office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems that Backman, in his heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.

Backman is quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane, given a new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, after he has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese, and the Saudis. Then the CIA will do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether Backman will survive—there is no chance of that. The question the CIA needs answered is, who will kill him?

My Review:

My reading of the Grisham library continues in my hopes of finding a book I love.  The 2 stars I give this one means it didn’t happen again.

This is an unique book.  The ‘hero’ of the book is downtrodden and put upon and barely makes it out on top in the end.  The ending was not as successful as it could have been.

The author spent hundreds of pages working up the litany of assassin groups after the broker and then the end has one called off.  What about the Chinese hit man?

Not a strong finish to a book that didn’t appeal to me.  I would have liked 3 chapters of the Broker getting all the people who had treated him badly and torturing them for 6 months.  I detest bad people getting away with being bad.

Again, 2 stars and I am giving my hard cover copy away.

Author Biography:

Long before his name became synonymous with the modern legal thriller, John Grisham was working 60-70 hours a week at a small Southaven, Mississippi law practice, squeezing in time before going to the office and during courtroom recesses to work on his hobby–writing his first novel.

Born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to a construction worker and a homemaker, John Grisham as a child dreamed of being a professional baseball player. Realizing he didn’t have the right stuff for a pro career, he shifted gears and majored in accounting at Mississippi State University. After graduating from law school at Ole Miss in 1981, he went on to practice law for nearly a decade in Southaven, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation.

One day at the DeSoto County courthouse, Grisham overheard the harrowing testimony of a twelve-year-old rape victim and was inspired to start a novel exploring what would have happened if the girl’s father had murdered her assailants. Getting up at 5 a.m. every day to get in several hours of writing time before heading off to work, Grisham spent three years on A Time to Kill and finished it in 1987. Initially rejected by many publishers, it was eventually bought by Wynwood Press, who gave it a modest 5,000 copy printing and published it in June 1988.

That might have put an end to Grishams hobby. However, he had already begun his next book, and it would quickly turn that hobby into a new full-time career. When he sold the film rights to The Firm to Paramount Pictures for $600,000, Grisham suddenly became a hot property among publishers, and book rights were bought by Doubleday. Spending 47 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, The Firm became the bestselling novel of 1991.

The successes of The Pelican Brief, which hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and The Client, which debuted at number one, confirmed Grisham’s reputation as the master of the legal thriller. Grisham’s success even renewed interest in A Time to Kill, which was republished in hardcover by Doubleday and then in paperback by Dell. This time around, it was a bestseller.

Since first publishing A Time to Kill in 1988, Grisham has written one book a year. His other books are The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, The Chamber, The Rainmaker, The Runaway Jury, The Partner, The Street Lawyer, The Testament, The Brethren, A Painted House, Skipping Christmas, The Summons, The King of Torts, Bleachers, The Last Juror, The Broker, Playing for Pizza,The Appeal, The Associate, Ford County, The Confession, The Litigators, Calico Joe, The Racketeer, Sycamore Row, Gray Mountain, and Rogue Lawyer. All of them have become international bestsellers. In addition he has written six novels for Young Adult readers: Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer, Theodore Boone: The Abduction, Theodore Boone: The Accused, Theodore Boone: The Activist, Theodore Boone: The Fugitive, and Theodore Boone: The Scandal (2016). There are currently over 300 million John Grisham books in print worldwide, which have been translated into 29 languages. The Innocent Man (October 2006) marked his first foray into non-fiction, and Ford County (November 2009) was his first short story collection. Partners (March 2016) was his first original digital short story. Nine of his novels have been turned into films (The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill, The Rainmaker, The Chamber, A Painted House, The Runaway Jury, and Skipping Christmas), as was an original screenplay, The Gingerbread Man.

Grisham took time off from writing for several months in 1996 to return, after a five-year hiatus, to the courtroom. He was honoring a commitment made before he had retired from the law to become a full-time writer: representing the family of a railroad brakeman killed when he was pinned between two cars. Preparing his case with the same passion and dedication as his books’ protagonists, Grisham successfully argued his clients’ case, earning them a jury award of $683,500—the biggest verdict of his career.

When he’s not writing, Grisham devotes time to charitable causes, including most recently his Rebuild The Coast Fund, which raised 8.8 million dollars for Gulf Coast relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He also keeps up with his greatest passion: baseball. The man who dreamed of being a professional baseball player now serves as the local Little League commissioner. The six ballfields he built on his property have played host to over 350 kids on 26 Little League teams.

Her life.

That’s because it was dominated by a despicable sociopath, her husband, Ezra Silverstein, who rarely let Sara out of his sight and manipulated her every move.

Out of desperation, Sara turned to a bodyguard at her club, Max Tobias, for sanity and salvation. Before long they are on the verge of a torrid affair that threatens not only to engulf them personally but their very lives, as well.

When Silverstein catches wind of Sara and Max’s relationship, he is determined to make them pay for their betrayal. He makes it his mission to inflict a blood thirsty punishment on his beloved Sara and her romantic rescuer.

As events reach their dramatic climax, Sara is stunned to discover Max is not really a bodyguard at all. This revelation turns her entire world upside down leaving her vulnerable and unable to trust anyone, especially the man to whom she had given her heart.

Riveting. Unpredictable. Page turning.

The story of a good woman trying to survive in Sin City where Satan himself has set up camp in her own marriage, and the only man she had truly loved turned out to be a virtual stranger.

God help her.

My Review:

“He had set all the players nicely on the board, but perhaps he chose to place the wrong protector next to his Queen. The bishop has been a betrayer.”

Sara is married to Ezra, a vicious, devious bastard and he loves nothing better than to elicit pain in creative ways to those around him, especially his wife. Sara, frightened beyond belief, turns to her bodyguard, Max, for help. Their affair, while hot, threatens to expose their betrayal to Ezra. Sara is caught between her sadistic husband and her protector who is hiding secrets of his own. When Ezra vows revenge, Sara doesn’t know where to turn and is left to fend for herself. Will she survive and if so, is her life worth more than a penny?

I liked A Penny’s Worth for its damaged characters, intense drama, accurate portrayal of an abusive husband, suspenseful plot and romance. Yes romance. While the genre is romantic suspense, I would categorize it more as dark mafia romance. The grittiness of what it means to be a part of an organized crime family is the backbone of this book. Every decision Ezra, Sara and even Max make revolve around this theme.

Yes, it is a classic love triangle but Austin puts an intriguing new spin on the trope that I found refreshing. Sara is, quite surprisingly, a strong woman and in the end, her choices are a part of who she becomes. Ezra is a controlling SOB but he loves Sara in his own way. Max loves Sara, too, but his love is fraught with secrets (no spoilers here).

I found the drama a little too much to take at times. It felt like it was a soap opera (think Dynasty from back in the day) and while some drama is good, it was a little over the top.

If you’re looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, not knowing what will happen next, read this book! There’s definitely some twists I didn’t see coming.

Title: Angelica (The Detective Mike Eiser Series Book 2)

Author: Clabe Polk

Genre: Mystery, Suspense

Book Blurb:

A long time ago, Angelica Vicetti did some very bad things with some very bad men. Now she’s built a new life for her family, far from Las Vegas.

Now it’s all about to come crashing down.

Angelica Vicetti of Las Vegas has become Angela Cassetta of Poplar Bluffs, just outside Atlanta, Georgia. She’s built a successful real estate agency, and the son she rescued from Vegas when he was a youngster is now a high school baseball star and destined for great things.

But the mob bosses in Vegas who forced her underground haven’t forgotten about her. A string of hit men come to town to kill her, but each time she saves herself and her son, with the help of her friends and Mike Eiser, a local Sheriff’s detective who has seen far worse.

Then things get even more complicated, when one of the hit men changes his mind and becomes strangely important to Angela in a whole new way… and a team of Federal agents come to town and ratchet up the odds. Suddenly, sleepy little Poplar Bluffs is awash in blood.

Angelica will have to take it all the way to the edge and beyond – into murder, kidnapping, and lying to the Feds – to save herself and her son. But… can she survive the fight for her family’s freedom?

My Review:

Wow.  A MUST READ. What a fantastic story this is.

I have to say that a small town like Poplar Bluffs faces the most crime a small town has seen since Jessica Fletcher lived in Cabot Cove.

I loved the story of Angelica and her family and just LOVED how every group of bads moved in, tried something and were dealt with in superb fashion.  The growing relationship between Danny and Angela was beautiful.

The best line of the book has to be, ‘What happens in the kitchen, stays in the kitchen.’

It became so funny how every type of bad guy/cop/etc. ended up eating at Bertie’s.

A fantastic book that I loved every second of and am sorry it ended because I can’t wait to read it again.

If you are only going to read one Detective Eiser book, make it this one. It is the greatest and a fun read.

I would give it 1,000,000 stars but must settle for 5+

Excerpt

I look down at my drink and wonder what will happen tomorrow. My daughter Constance wants to come and visit. She lives in New York, and before all hell broke loose, we didn’t see each other often. I missed her so much, and it seemed as if I had to beg her even to talk on the phone. Now, it’s like she wants to be here every weekend. It’s only an hour’s flight by the shuttle or three by train, so she can come when she wants. I just can’t figure out why she got so clingy. I have my troubles, but it doesn’t have anything to do with her. No use in asking her husband either. Though a nice enough guy, I always wonder if he has someplace important to go when I visit. He never sits still and stays busy on the phone or at the computer. He makes a good living, but it seems a person could take an hour to sit and talk. I’d looked forward to some kind of relationship when he and Constance got married. It’ll never happen with him.

When I take another pull at my drink, I notice the burn feels less. It happens every time. First sip initiation, I call it. It’s like the first puff of a cigarette, hits hard then, after, nothing. I decide to let Constance pretty much have the agenda tomorrow. She and I have not had a chance to talk about anything deep for a while. It could just be that she blames me for her mother running off with that guy with the house on the Hudson. He has a title, and the old gal couldn’t resist, but I think the daughter always felt I should have done something. Her mother’s sleeping with another guy and what the hell can I do about that?

I’ll just go with the flow. If she wants to go out, we will. If she wants to stay in, we can do that too. I better think about getting some food in the house. Of course, we can always order take out. I need to move on to my drink and let this go. Tomorrow will be what it is. I remember the day she was born. I looked down at her in my arms and promised I would do anything for her. I love her more than life itself, and I hope we can somehow get to the root of whatever’s wrong. She sounded strange on the phone this morning, and I feel helpless to do anything about it. I hope she opens up when she gets here.

For some reason, I feel tired. Perhaps I’ll go ahead and finish my drink. Maybe I’ll just go home and forget the burger. First, though, I’ll just shut my eyes for a minute. My hands feel good when I put my head down.

“Hey, Greg,” Jerry says. I barely hear him. “What’s the matter? You taking a nap? Greg?” I can feel him shake me, but I have no interest in waking up. His voice gets further away, and I think he says, “Oh, my God, Sophie, call 911, quick.” Now the room goes silent.

Publisher: Wavefront Publishing

Book Blurb:

DEA Special Agent Maggie Holt is fierce, smart, beautiful– and in over her head.

Maggie has been working undercover 15 months when she is taken by Chinese-Mexican cartel leader, Chenglei. She tries to escape with 8 other women and is captured and brutally punished.

Adam O’Connor is angry and frustrated. It’s his fault his partner, and one-time lover, is missing and no matter how many leads he chases, they don’t bring Maggie home.

An unexpected break in the case sends Adam south to Texas. His old SEAL Team Chief, Frank Stein, offers his home and his help in the search effort.

Will these two strong men find Maggie? And will their decades old friendship be destroyed by their love for the same woman?

Pre-order the exciting continuation of the Wounded Hearts Saga today!

Excerpt:

The dust and heat beat down on Maggie and the other women in the Humvee. She glanced back the way they’d come. Dangerous as it was, they needed to find a better used road in order to hide their tracks. The goat trail they were on would lead anyone chasing straight to them.

The sun directly overhead made it hard to know which way they traveled. Every bump and rut exacerbated the wound on her side until it felt as though she was getting jabbed by a red-hot poker. She hoped it wasn’t festering, but there wasn’t much she could do about it out here.

Olga glanced at her from the driver’s seat. “You should drive, you’d be much better than me. I don’t even have a license.”

That’s right, Olga was such a commanding presence, Maggie had forgotten she’d been a child prostitute before her capture by the traffickers.

“No, you’re doing fine. I need to keep watch.” She tapped the rifle, aware of her friend’s aversion to firearms.

“What’s going to happen to us?” a woman-child asked from the back. Five women huddled on the narrow seat, the body of the young girl who’d given her life for them wrapped in a blanket on the floor at their feet.

Maggie wished she had a positive reply. Truth was, unless they found help soon, they were in as much or more danger than before. This area was overrun with warring factions from two of the most powerful cartels in Mexico. If they were found, they would die.

She forced a smile for the girl. “We’re heading for the border and then we’re going home to our families and a nice hot bath. Okay?”

The girl looked out the front window at the undulating sea of sand and something heartbreakingly sad passed over her face.

“Sure,” she said.

Unorthodox, A Kendra Spark Novel – Book 1 by S. Peters-Davis @spdavis788 #paranormal #suspense

Unorthodox300DPI

Title – Unorthodox, A Kendra Spark Novel – Book 1

Author – S. Peters-Davis

Genre – Paranormal suspense-thriller romance with a dollop of supernatural

Publisher  – BWL Publishing Inc.

Book Blurb –

Kendra Spark, suspense-mystery romance author and communicator with the dead, is requested to hop on the first flight to D.C.

Jenna Powers, FBI criminal analyst and estranged best friend of Kendra, gets ghosticized in a fatal accident before relaying all the details of the FBI killer case.

Derek Knight, a dedicated (hot) FBI Special Task Force agent, takes lead on the case.

The investigation into the FBI agent killings continues as Kendra, Jenna – yes, even after death – and Derek work together on the case before Director of the Special Task Force Jackson Powers’ number is up. He’s Jenna’s father and the end-game of the killer’s target list.

Somehow the elusive killer remains undetected, until Kendra’s unique ability produces results and a final possibility at stopping his killing spree before it’s too late.

Excerpt  –

Taken from Advanced Review Copy – (Scene – Kendra and Derek, right after Jenna got hit by a car – Location – DC)

The scent of vanilla coursed through the air again. “Dammit, Sparky! What the hell am I supposed to do dead?” Jenna stood next to me and rendered a big sigh as if air flowed out of her lungs. Her tone sounded laced with anger and maybe even blame, or maybe the blame thing was all my own feeling. “Can you see me?”

Of course I saw her from my peripheral, but I didn’t turn to look up at her. My attention moved back to Jenna’s deceased body and then to Derek. His complete focus seemed to be on me. If I actually spoke to Jenna, he would see me talking to empty air, and then, well, that was another whole issue I didn’t want to deal with right now. My immediate goal was to keep my head on straight and not start sobbing like a baby.

Derek strode toward me, his eyes narrowed and brow furrowed. Once he reached me his face relaxed a little. He offered his hand and helped me to my feet. My knees were so stiff they barely cooperated.

“Are you Jenna’s friend, Kendra?” His striking blue eyes shined with unshed moisture, and his chiseled jawline tensed as he waited.

“Yes.” One single word and I nearly gagged on the growing knob in my throat.

Jenna sobbed beside me, tearlessly as ghosts didn’t cry real tears. “Gods, Sparky, just give me a signal…something to tell me you can see me. I’ve never been dead before. I have no idea what happens next.”

I’d only seen her cry one other time in all the years I’d known her and that was when her dog, Bailey, got hit crossing the road. Jenna had been eight years old and we’d walked home from school together. The dog saw her, got excited, and ran to meet her. It was lucky she hadn’t gotten hit in her rescue attempt. Thinking of it reminded me of today and Jenna’s heroic success at saving the young boy. He probably would never know his heroine had died; the kid never once looked at her.

Jenna needed an acknowledgment.

Derek clasped my hands; I was sure to console me, so I used it to my advantage and slid against him in an embrace. Jenna stood behind him, her eyes appearing red-rimmed without a stream of tears. I caught her attention over Derek’s shoulder. One wink and the best damn smile I could muster.

“You…do see me.” And with that she disappeared.

Schism (The Detective Mike Eiser Series Book 1) by @ClabePolk #BookReview! #suspense #FridayReads

Schism

Title: Schism (The Detective Mike Eiser Series Book 1)

Author: Clabe Polk

Genre: Detective Mystery, Suspense

Book Blurb:

Atlanta’s infamous Bowen Homes Projects is no place for children, especially two teenaged boys. If anyone knows, it’s Kat Thomas. The single mom has seen enough senseless death and broken dreams to last a lifetime, and she is seeking a different future in Poplar Bluffs.

But dark shadows fall on even the brightest futures.
“Mad Dog” Lincoln lives up to his name every day on the streets; never more so than the time he killed Kat’s fiancé to leave her broke, pregnant, and alone. Now, the Dog is demanding one of her sons as the newest recruit for his gang, the Raven’s Claws.

Kat is desperate to save her family from a life of crime, but a single mother is no match for a raging criminal like Mad Dog, whom even the police avoid. All but one, that is: Detective Mike Eiser. Determined to end Lincoln’s reign of terror once and for all, Eiser will soon discover that ruining Lincoln’s plans might just turn a mad dog rabid.

My Review:

This was a long read and but one that kept the reader interested.  The plot seemed centered on the thug and it kinda surprised this reader to realize it was a book about a police detective.  For a good part of the book, Det. Eisner was nowhere to be found.  The character of MD seemed indestructible and that wore on me after awhile.  I would have had a certain gun aimed three feet higher for a more permanent solution.  The book turned out to be a modern day urban version of a Mike Hammer mystery.

I think fans of old fashioned film noire detective movies and books will love this book.  It’s a page turner that keeps a reader on the edge of their seat.

A four-star work because the plot arc of MD’s focus on one family wasn’t really well defined.  Ran on a bit but the great action scenes did allay that somewhat.  A worthy addition to the annals of great detective novels.

PW-lin wilder solemnly audio version full page 2

Audiobook Title Do You Solemnly Swear? A Nation of Law-The Dark Side

Author Lin Wilder

Genre crime, legal fiction, mystery

Book Blurb

What if your former girlfriend decides to use her 6-year-old daughter to punish you for breaking up with her?

How do you prove that you are innocent of the worst case of sexual perversion against a child?

Is it possible to refute the lies of a beautiful, seemingly innocent, little girl?

When Gabe McAllister, decorated former Marine and respected Texas State Trooper, walked out of his condo in West Houston on a Tuesday morning to head to a meeting of the newly formed task force of the DEA, Texas State Police and Border Patrol, he found five Houston cops waiting to collar him for the rape of 6-year-old Annie Bridges.

His next several days and weeks are a blur as he realizes belatedly that he has no chance against his diminutive accuser. His implicit trust in the fairness of the justice system shattered, McAllister lands in the Huntsville prison, sentenced to three counts of 20-to-life sentences.

In the sequel to The Fragrance Shed By a Violet, Lin Wilder embroils characters in another complex web of dysfunctional family, deceit, revenge, and the politics of courtrooms. Pulitzer Prize reporter Kate Townsend’s front page story for her newspaper, The Houston Tribune, about a juror – the foreman of McAllister’s jury – stepping forward to speak about the case and her concern about why McAllister was not granted a retrial, galvanizes Houstonians once again: Had a Houston jury convicted another innocent person?

Dr. Lindsey McCall, former inmate at Huntsville and now Medical Director at the Prisons, and Rich Jansen, Chief Warden at the prisons, are faced with the all-too-familiar question of just how involved should they get as Townsend begins to dig into the background of little Annie Bridges and her mother. When Townsend reveals the details of her new investigative series: A Nation of Law: The Dark Side, Jansen is more than intrigued.

Andrea

I stopped breathing a long time ago.

I was taken into a cult when I was ten, married to the leader’s son at 20.

I learned to fear independence, so I stayed.

Day after day after day.

Until I couldn’t anymore.

So I started running and kept running because he’s after me.

Afraid, alone, hungry, but free.

Until a stranger offered me breakfast. And I said yes.

Erik

The thing I can do best? Living. Hard and to the fullest.

The world had screamed my name, and I lived it all until I got tired of it.

Bought a surf board, a house in my sandy hometown, and started another great life.

Young, rich, and totally free had been working like a charm.

Until I saw that blue tent on the beach.

And my life changed again.

Excerpt

Chapter 1

Crescent Creek, South Florida, May

“Well.” Erik Axelsson wiped salty water from his face. “Look what the tide dragged in.”

Nestled in the dunes edging his property, the little blue tent sure hadn’t been there when he’d gone out surfing earlier that morning. With his board under his arm, he walked out of the ocean toward the uninvited guest.

Erik cringed, praying it wasn’t for one of those crappy TV shows like Where Did The Star Go or something. He had worked hard at building a normal life, and it had been years since the press had bothered him. Yet a nostalgic willing to stand the heat for a picture of Ax had shown up before.

“Knock knock,” Erik called out as he reached the tent.

When nothing happened, he drove the surfboard in the hot sand with a forceful swing and a chuckle. Whoever hid inside the camping igloo was too hung-over or too stoned to wake up. Each representing a better reason to be in such crappy shelter, on a Floridian beach, on a late May morning, than poking at his past glory. Must be at least three hundred degrees inside.

He grabbed a tent pole, shook it. The old thing shuddered like a leaf in a hurricane. “Rise and shine,” he sing-songed.

Someone moved. Then came the voice. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

“A girl?” he mouthed before shaking his head.

Erik brushed his palm over prickling shoulders as the angry sun hit, leaving only salt where ocean drops had been a few minutes before. He revered in that roasting pleasure, in the blues of the sky and water surrounding him. Entertained by his unplanned guest, he pulled his dripping, long hair into a messy bun. A good day for surfing, waves still crashed on the shoreline. The rumble must have hidden the croaky noise of the tent’s zipper because when he looked down at the entrance, he found two huge brown eyes staring at him. An echo of lifetimes ago, distant, feeble, poked at him. The feeling had dwelled into his heart after his parents had died and now lingered on her delicate features. Fear.

The girl took a breath, clenched her teeth, and crawled out. She rose on all of her five feet six or so. “Who–” she cleared her throat. “Who are you?”

Okay. He did not expect the question. The whole world knew Ax and the Hurricanes. He’d spent ten years of his life on everybody’s mouth, eyes and above all, ears. Newspapers. TV. Concerts. And the girl asked who he was. Surprise shadowed the male appreciation of the woman in front of him. For now. He’ll so be back at it.

“I think the question is, who are you?” he retorted, crossing his arms over his chest.

“A camper.”

“Well, camper, your tent is on my property, in case you missed that,” he said, pointing at the Private Property notice on the berm not far from her den. The rusty, barely visible, Pisa-tower-bend sign. He should invest some money into a new one. “My house’s back there, anyway.”

She turned around, took those details in. “Oh.”

All right, calculus time. A girl, alone, in an old tent. Add a black bag he’d peeked to with clothes in it, plus that look in her eyes. The result? Trouble. “All right. You hungry?”

She nodded.

“Let’s go.”

Excerpt

The man was dead.

Her brother had killed him in front of her eyes.

Or had it all been a lie?

If anyone knew what was going on it would be Vernon. She moved back into the living room and peered out the window. The sky was still dark. The street light still burned. Dare she call him? He’d think she’d capitulated. Wanted him.

She dropped the curtain and straightened her shoulders. She wanted him all right. She wanted answers. She wanted to know why dead men were calling her and threatening notes appeared in her mail.

Hands shaking, she punched in Vernon’s cell number. It rang once. Twice. She imagined him holding her, kissing her. His low, rumbling voice whispering in her ear. No, she couldn’t talk to him. Not yet. She was still addicted to the man.

She tapped the phone off and curled back up on the sofa. Tomorrow. Tomorrow, she’d send him an e-mail—a nicely worded formal request.

At that moment, the phone in her hand rang. Vernon returning her call? She hesitated. Then flicked it on.

A low pitched voice spoke through heavy static. “Does Vernon know what you did?” A frisson of fear crept down her spine and burrowed deep into her core. She tossed the cell phone onto the floor and buried herself under the silk shawls, struggling to breathe.

Forget all the reasons why Vernon was the wrong man for her. She needed him. She needed him now.

Excerpt:

When the call came, I pulled my long hair into a ponytail and quickly left for the crime scene. I’d constantly felt I needed to be tougher and better than everyone else, especially as a girl in a man’s world. I didn’t want any person to second-guess why I’d been given the job. No one could accuse me of nepotism.

Arriving on the scene, the smell of smoke with the tang of gasoline assaulted my lungs. The building was a total loss. It bothered me to see something once so beautiful destroyed.

“Sir, you can’t be here,” the officer I’d assigned to the perimeter yelled.

Turning toward the commotion, I witnessed a tall, dark-haired man storming toward me with violence in his approach. Sizing up the advancing danger, I threw my shoulders back and met the man halfway.

“This is my building. Who are you, and what do you know so far?” His gravel voice caused goose bumps to form on my skin.

“I’m sorry, Mr…?” Up close, the man took my breath away. His features weren’t “pretty boy” beautiful, but striking. Chiseled chin, full lips, slightly curved nose. Must have been broken at one time.

“Pigg, Lucas Pigg. And you are?”

Caught staring at his lips, I almost missed the question. “I’m Lily O’Neill, chief arson investigator. We don’t know much so far. I’ve only begun my investigation. This wasn’t an accident. It was set with gasoline as the accelerant. The smell is noticeable. I have some questions for you. I’d like to meet you in my office to talk.” No matter how good-looking, Mr. Pigg was my first suspect.

“You can’t think I did this.” Anger tinged his voice.

Even with my small stature, I wasn’t about to back down. Stepping closer, our gazes met and tempers flared.

“Look, Mr. Pigg.” My own voice grew louder, like a barking dog defending its territory. “Everyone’s a suspect until they’re eliminated. I’m looking forward to asking you some questions. You may want to bring your lawyer.”

His eyes narrowed. “Fine. I’ll meet you in your office.”

With his declaration, I turned toward the scene and sought out the fire chief. No man’s going to stop me from doing my job.

Inspector Stone Mysteries by Alex R. Carver @arcarver87 Are a Deal! #mystery #free #99c

2016-852-ebook-alex-r-carvel-a-will

BOOK 1

Title – Where There’s A Will: Inspector Stone Mysteries #1

Author – Alex R Carver

Price – FREE

Genre – Mystery

Blurb –

A kidnapped teen, a 3.5 million Euro ransom, and the Russian Mafia.

Inspector Stone is tasked with finding Alice Keating and bringing her home safely. Hard enough under normal circumstances, but between investigating an unrelated armed robbery, family problems, and the machinations of an ambitious underling, it’s almost impossible.

Unknown to either Stone or Alice’s parents, the kidnappers have more in mind than collecting a ransom. When it turns out that the Russian Mafia might be involved in the kidnapping, things begin to spiral out of Stone’s control.

Can Stone find Alice before the kidnappers make good on their threats? If not it won’t just be Alice that becomes a victim to their deadly plans…

Excerpt –

“Kidnap!” he yelled the warning as two masked men jumped from the back of the van and reached for the rear door of the car. He was about half a second too slow in hitting the central door lock.

Alice knew, intellectually, that she was a potential target for kidnappers, she had never thought it would actually happen, though. The sight of the two dark-clothed and masked men leaping from the van froze her where she sat; it wasn’t until the rear door of the Bentley was yanked open that she recovered from her shock and regained the ability to move. She had her hand on the passenger side door when her ankle was grabbed.

Automatically, she kicked out and fought to get free. She writhed and twisted every which way as she desperately struggled to break the grip on her ankle. Slowly, inexorably, though, she was dragged through the car, despite her grabbing at everything within reach to stop what was happening.

Brian cursed himself for not having put the locks on before starting the engine and quickly released them again. He then took off his seatbelt and threw open the door next to him so he could get out. The moment he was on his feet he lunged for the figure that had hold of Alice, confident that his past as a Royal Marine would stand him in good stead in confronting the man trying to pull his charge from the car.

“Bloody help me,” Jim ordered his partner, who was standing uselessly at his side. He was not unused to fighting, and could generally hold his own, but he was hampered by the need to keep hold of Alice.

Unlike his partners, Lewis was not a fighter, and he had no intention of getting physical with the chauffeur, who was a more imposing figure than him. Instead he reached into the rear of the Bentley to take hold of Alice Keating’s flailing foot and help pull her from the car.

When he failed to break the grip the would-be kidnapper had on his charge, Brian changed tactics. He let go of the man’s arm and wrapped his own around his neck, putting him in a chokehold; once he was unconscious, Brian figured he would release Alice automatically. He had no sooner secured him in a headlock, however, when he was forced to let him go as a punch to the kidney sent pain shooting through his body.

Crash smashed a fist into the chauffeur’s kidney a second time, he then pulled him away from Jim and threw him into the side of the van. A kick to the back of the knee made Brian fall forward, and Crash smashed his head into the side door of the van; twice more he did that until the chauffeur’s body went limp and blood ran down his face.

“Get on with it,” he snapped at his partners, who were still trying to drag Alice from the car. From the back pocket of Jim’s combat trousers, he took the envelope that was sticking out, which he shoved into the inside pocket of Brian Jacob’s jacket. That done, he returned to his previous position behind the wheel, where he revved the engine impatiently.

With two men pulling at her, Alice found it impossible to save herself, and with a final heave, she was yanked from the Bentley to land with a painful thud on the concrete.

Fire Burning Inside The House

BOOK 2

Title – An Eye For An Eye: Inspector Stone Mysteries #2

Author – Alex R Carver

Genre – Mystery/thriller

Price – 99c

Blurb –

Revenge comes to Branton.

Inspector Stone’s past catches up to him with blood and flames.

A series of murders rock the small town of Branton and leave Inspector Stone with his toughest case, one which may see him paying a tremendous personal price if he can’t solve it quick enough.

At first glance the murder of the wife and mother of an Asian shopkeeper appears racially motivated, and the local paper is quick to stir up tensions within the community. Another murder, this time the husband of a local barrister, an attack on a trio of teens, and the discovery of a previously unreported murder all lead Stone to the conclusion that something more than racism is at work.

Before he can work out what connects these seemingly unrelated events he is distracted by the most tragic of events. Can Stone and his partner pull themselves together long enough to figure out who is responsible for bringing terror to the streets of Branton, or will the killer complete his fiendish plan and make good his escape?

Excerpt –

His eyes darting around, checking for potential witnesses, Kurt strode up the road. He was once again dressed darkly in jeans and a black pullover – he had little in the way of spare clothing – which would have made him difficult to see in the dusk were it not for the street-lights illuminating the deepening darkness. He would have liked to avoid the pools of light that lit him up at intervals but that was impossible, all he could do was move through them as quickly as possible.

When he reached his destination, without seeing anyone or anything to give him pause or make him postpone or abandon his plan, he stepped off the pavement and into the shadows of the drive.

Kurt pulled down his balaclava as he walked up the drive, past the BMW that was parked there. It startled him when a security light blazed on, chasing away the concealing shadows; he had done a recce of the house, so he should have known about it, but somehow he had missed the light. His footsteps faltered momentarily, but he quickly regained his stride and approached the front door, taking out the knife he had brought – the weapon was a lethal-looking thing, a hunting knife with an eight-inch blade that was guaranteed to inspire fear in all but the most hardened of people – from the bag on his shoulder as he did so.

With the knife held at his side, where it wouldn’t immediately be visible, he reached out to ring the doorbell. He heard it echo in the passage beyond the door, and a few moments later he heard footsteps as someone responded to it. Behind his balaclava he smiled in anticipation of what was to come.

The moment the door swung open, and before the man who stood framed in the doorway could react, Kurt lunged. He thrust the knife he had brought into the stomach of Terry Fielding, who collapsed over the blade with an explosive gasp of pain.

Kurt took Fielding by the shoulder and shoved him off the blade before entering the house and slamming the door behind him. He could see Fielding trying to draw breath, to either scream or yell for help, and he quickly dropped on top of him, his hand going to his mouth to cut off his efforts; at the same time he buried the knife in Fielding’s stomach for a second time.

Again and again he stabbed Fielding, half a dozen times in total. He didn’t stop until his victim lay still beneath him.

Excerpt –

When he made it to Buster’s side, Maxwell looked around for whatever it was that had attracted his dog’s attention. He could see nothing so he tried to pull Buster away from the bank, he wouldn’t leave, though, Buster simply pulled free and continued barking. Maxwell looked around again, but still couldn’t see what had caught his dog’s attention; it was a few moments before he realised that Buster was not looking down at the bank at his feet, or at the water running past, he was looking out across the water towards the far bank.

Maxwell strained his eyes to see through the thin mist, to pick out what it was Buster had spotted, but his sight wasn’t as good as that of his dog, and it wasn’t until a swirl of the mist left the far bank clear for a moment that he saw it. Even then he wasn’t sure what he was looking at. He reached into his pocket for his glasses and slipped them on so he could see better, but he still couldn’t make out what the black and blue object was.

Only when he turned away, to make another attempt to pull Buster back from the water, and he saw it out the corner of his eyes did he realise what it was that lay on the other side of the river, almost, but not quite, falling into the water.

“Come on, boy.” Maxwell took Buster by the collar to pull him away from the water, and this time he turned and moved quickly ahead to guide his master along the bank.

Maxwell reflected that it was as if he had been waiting for his discovery to be recognised, and that now it had it was okay for him to leave. As quickly as his legs would allow, which wasn’t quick enough for Buster, who pulled him along and threatened to drag him if he fell, Maxwell made his way through the trees to the bridge.

He was able to increase his pace a little once they were out of the woods, and there was no longer so much danger of him tripping over, he still wasn’t quick enough for Buster, however.

In the end he was forced to let go of Buster’s collar and let him run on ahead to the car. Being pulled over by his dog was the last thing he needed, especially when there was no-one around to help him – he hadn’t yet seen any of his fellow dog-walkers, which wasn’t all that unusual, he was normally the first one there, and he was sure the mist had put a few of the regulars off.

When he made it to his car, Maxwell found Buster waiting patiently alongside it. He gave his head a quick pat before unlocking the driver’s door so he could retrieve his mobile phone from the glove compartment. Following the instructions his son had carefully drilled into him when he gave him the phone, Maxwell unlocked it and dialled nine-nine-nine.

The emergency services operator answered the call almost immediately, and Maxwell said in a voice that shook more than he liked, “I need an ambulance, and the police, please.”

Each morning, Emily Kendrick runs on the hard-packed sand of St. Augustine Beach to clear her mind and heal her heart.

From the widow’s walk of the house perched high on the dunes, a man trains his binoculars on Emily…

Excerpt

Chapter 1

She ran as fast as she could on the hard packed sand this early morning in February, still cold in St. Augustine, Florida. Cold and beautiful with the tide out and no one around. Almost always surefooted, not as steady since Larry died eight months before, Emily Kendrick stumbled and caught her balance. There was a sense of someone watching her, close to her, yet she ran into no one on the deserted beach. It was almost an everyday occurrence. Tears spilled down her face just as the hurdles set for the track team came up. Easy leap over the first one, the second knocked over by a careless foot. Emily fell and didn’t get up.

A lone runner sprinted through the waves and hurried to aid the fallen woman.

Binoculars slammed against the railing of the widow’s walk where two eyes had been watching the long-legged runner for months. From his well hidden perch high up on the mansion over-looking the Atlantic Ocean, under investigation the infamous Clifford Lansdale said, “She’s mine.” Fragments of the expensive binoculars lay at his feet.

“Are you all right?” the runner said.

Emily laughed and cried. “Oh sure. I never stumble like this and the kids will be coming down for practice soon. I’ve got to be on top of my game to train them.” She stood up, checked all her parts to make sure nothing was damaged and brushed off sand. “Thanks for stopping by. I’m Emily Kendrick.” She noticed the runner checking out all her parts too and shook her head. Guys. They just can’t help it.

“Patrick Corwin. What kids?”

“I coach the women’s track team at the college. We’re at the beach most days before the crowd.” She opened a thermos and offered tea. Patrick begged off.

“I run early before office hours. Have to get up to Jacksonville before morning rush.” He fished a business card from his running shorts. “Call me. I’d enjoy getting to know you better, Emily.”

Patrick left before she had a chance to say no. How could she ever go out with another man? Larry was the best husband in the world, her high school sweetie. Emily didn’t know how she was going to spend the rest of her life without him. Their children were grown up and married. They loved her but had their own lives to lead. “Go out, Mom,” Tommy said. “Have some fun. Dad wouldn’t want you to be alone.” Her daughter wasn’t eager for her to date. “Play Bridge, learn how to use the computer we bought you. I’ll have a baby for you to play with.” Emily hated card games, computers were scary, babies sounded wonderful but is that how life would be?

From sounds of a bus coming over the nearby dune, Emily knew the team had arrived. Time to work and work was the answer for now.

Excerpt:

Jake nodded, but all he could concentrate on were Penny’s last words before the officer appeared. When they were alone again, he threw up his hands. “What do you mean, go back to Phoenix? Why the hell would I do that? My sister’s been murdered, and I want to find out why.”

She turned her back on him, went to the open door of the bathroom, and lifted her clothes from the hook. Beneath the thin, hospital gown her spine was straight, her movements tight, as if coiled and ready to spring.

“Penny, I know how much she meant to you.” How much she meant to both of them. He wanted to hold her, share their loss. “I’m not leaving you.”

Untying the gown, she let it drop around her feet, and sidestepped out of the heap. She pulled the dark gray sweater over her head then stepped into black velvet jeans. She wouldn’t make eye contact, wouldn’t speak as she sat on the green plastic chair.

This was killing him. He needed to hold her, help her with her pain—his pain. Haltingly, he made his way to her, touched her head, and waited while she zipped her boots. “Penny.” She resisted, but he tipped her chin, forcing her to look up. “Come on, baby. You don’t have to worry about me leaving you.”

“You will.”

“No—”

“When I tell you the truth, you will.”

Hunter’s Quest by @kgmccullough is a Gripping #RomanticSuspense! #books #paranormal

Hunter_200

Title: Hunter’s Quest

Author: Karen McCullough

Genre: Romantic Suspense with slight paranormal element

Book Blurb:

Kristie Sandford’s vacation is interrupted when a man jumps out in front of her car. She avoids hitting him, but when she stops to see if he’s hurt, he demands she help him escape from the people chasing him. Kristie has an odd “gift”-she occasionally gets warning messages, and she gets one saying he needs her help or he’ll die.

Jason Hunter is an SBI (N.C. State Bureau of Investigation) agent working on his own time searching for a friend, an investigative reporter who disappeared while tracking down rumors of corruption in the bureaucracy of a small, North Carolina mountain town. Jason is grateful to Kristie for rescuing him, but dubious when she insists she has to continue helping him. Kristie is attracted to Jason, but the edge of danger she senses in him reminds her too much of the abusive family she escaped as soon as she could. Still, the message said he’d die if she didn’t help him, and the messages have been right before.

Excerpt:

The sudden, sharp crack of a rifle shot, way too close, shattered the peace of a lovely June day.

Moments before, Kristie Sandford had been driving sedately and musing on camera angles and light as she reveled in the sun-drenched beauty of a back road in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Pink and blue wildflowers grew along the verge, just in front of shrubs in varying shades of green. The scent of honeysuckle drifted in the open window of the car.

Alarmed by noise, she pressed down on the Toyota’s brake pedal and scanned the area around her. Thick shrubbery limited visibility to only a few feet into their depths. The land rose above her on the right, but even when she bent her neck to look up the side of the hill, she could detect no sign of human presence. She hadn’t passed any parked vehicles recently, and only one had gone by in the other direction in the last ten minutes. The last house she’d seen was more than a mile back.

A second crack followed moments later. Hunters, maybe—an uneasy thought. Stray bullets from careless hunters killed people. Kristie slowed the car, although the frequent switchbacks on the steep, narrow mountain road already limited her speed.

She steered around the next tight curve, alert to the possibility of another shot. That attention probably saved the life of the man who darted out of the trees and dashed across the road directly ahead of her.

“Ohmigod.” She stomped on the brake. Thank heaven for anti-lock technology. The tires screeched on the pavement and almost lost traction.

The man stopped in the middle of the road and stared at her. His glance swung toward the trees from which he’d emerged, then back to her. What the hell was he doing? Did he have a death wish or was he just frozen by panic? He stood in the center of the highway, watching her bear down on him.

Her heart did somersaults as she struggled to control the Toyota. Fingers locked around the steering wheel and swung it, trying to avoid him. The man stood his ground, inviting her to hit him. It looked like she’d grant his wish. There wasn’t enough room left to stop. If she swerved sharply enough to miss him, she’d induce a skid that might take her off the road. The agonized squeal of tires on asphalt scraped her nerves raw. Her pulse hammered in her ears

At the last possible second, he jumped out of the way, diving to the side.

Excerpt:

“The sunlight was intense after a half hour in that gloomy space, but I squinted hard and kept moving toward a narrow set of steps down to the parking lot. Grady walked a few paces behind me, and if he heard the crinkle of paper as I moved, he elected not to say anything.

Grady hit the remote to his truck and grabbed for the passenger side door, his hand light on my elbow as he helped me up. Paper crackled as my butt hit the seat and Grady’s eyes narrowed. Without a word, he slammed my door and went around to the driver’s side, climbing up into the cab and stabbing the keys into the ignition.

“So, I—” I hesitated as I shifted in my seat and my movement was accompanied by the distinct sound of cardboard bending.

“No,” Grady muttered, and clicked on the radio. “No talking.”

“But—”

“Shh.” Grady put a finger to his lips, his eyes still on the road. “Any minute you’re going to tell me about the felony crime you just committed. And then I’m going to have to deal with the fact that I was an accessory to a felony crime.”

“Umm, yeah.” I reached around to the back of my pants and eased the file folder up from my waistband, working it out slowly so as to not lose anything as Grady headed up the hillside toward his house. As I brought it around to look at it, the red block letters damning me to years of incarceration should I get caught, a muscle ticked in Grady’s jaw.

“You stole classified documents.” He shook his head from side to side.

I looked up at Grady and then down at the mangled file with the red Top Secret heading. I took a corner of the front sheet and ripped across the width of the page, separating the words “Top Secret” from the rest of the paper.

“They’re declassified now.” I crumpled up the classification and shoved it in my pocket.

Grady sighed.

I shrugged and opened the file.

Idiot’s Tale by Anthony Land is Brilliantly Written! #thriller #mystery #TuesdayBookBlog

Idiots Tale

Title: Idiot’s Tale: It’s always darkest just before the end

Author: Anthony Land

Genre: Suspense, Thriller, Fiction Noir, Private Detective Noir

Book Blurb:

Your name is John Rainwater. You’re an aging and penniless private investigator. You may have killed someone. You and your client are up to your necks in something terrifying. The female spy who is supposed to be keeping you alive may be insane. And tomorrow things could get really bad.

It began when the rich and beautiful Morgana Trehane burst into your low-rent office near the New Orleans docks, claiming that she has just escaped from kidnappers who grilled her about something called White Stone, which may be the realization of the ancient dream of turning base metal into gold.

Within 24 hours you and your client are in Miami, with ex-Mossad agent Roni Miller – the most violent woman you ever met – guiding you through a tangle of lies, greed, and deadly peril. What you are pursuing isn’t just the promise of endless wealth, but a device that could set off the most terrible war in human history.

You are vastly out of your depth, the body count is rising, and all you know for certain is that if this operation you’ve stumbled into fails, you, the lovely Morgana, and everyone else involved will end up in unmarked graves so that people in power can deny that it ever existed.

Idiot’s Tale is unlike any thriller you’ve read, careening between mordant humor and nihilistic darkness, on its way to an ending that will haunt you for a long time.

If you’re a fan of fast-paced, smart thrillers with a very dark edge, you should read Idiot’s Tale. Go ahead. We dare you!

My Review:

This was a great read.

The tale of Dr. Rainwater and Morgana was a page turner that I couldn’t wait to continue.  I love the intellectual aspect to the gritty PI and many of the lines will resonate with me, going forward.  The least of which was ‘Figjam’. Do not Google a definition in front of children or people with mild constitutions.

Warning: I must warn the reader that there are scenes and descriptions of graphic violent torture that could offend.  I did find it hard to eat lunch and read them but I am a trooper.

I found the ending was not satisfying but this was a stand-alone book and it seems pretty certain that there won’t be a sequel.  I loved the book, would be happy to get a hardcover/paperback so I could keep it on my mystery shelf.

One last point, I have read or watched hundreds of mysteries and didn’t know what was going on here.  Brilliantly written.  Recommended to every fan of Fiction Noir.  A spectacular private eye book worth the time and money.  Buy this book.

Author Biography:

I’ve made my living as a writer since I was 18 years old. In the process of becoming one hell of a lot older, I’ve been a newspaperman, wire service reporter, television journalist, advertising man, medical writer, marketer, public relations adviser and ghostwriter.

While I’m of the school that holds that no author should be analyzed beyond what he or she chooses to publish, I will admit to being a non-believing summa cum laude graduate in philosophy from a Jesuit university who, in the course of a somewhat adventurous life, has seen more of the dark side of humankind than he might have wished and contributed more to its absurdity than he intended

I am very interested in the reaction of readers to what I have written, and hope you will see fit to share your impressions of IDIOT’S TALE, NIKA and my most recent novel, THE BANSHEES, either as formal reviews, on this forum or with me personally at anthonyland03@gmail.com .

Title: Don’t Look Back

Author: Vicki Tharp

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Ridley Meyer’s latest murder left him unsatisfied, but the spitfire with the U-haul may provide just the challenge he craves.

Veterinarian Audrey West is running out of time, yet she is determined to keep her inherited home out of foreclosure. With no more than a dream, a prayer, and a packed U-Haul, West moves back home to complete the expensive repairs. Just when Audrey thinks she might pull off the impossible, she finds her dream is not the only thing being followed.

Scott Romero has it all—money, ambition and a growing reputation as the city’s top veterinary surgeon. However, when his best friend Audrey is abducted by a killer, Scott realizes what he doesn’t have and he must risk losing his job, and his life, to save her.

Don’t Look Back was a 2007 Romantic Suspense finalist in the Romance Writer’s of America Golden Heart writing contest.

Excerpt:

He leaned in to scrutinize his work. “Let me see.”

She turned toward him.

He pushed her hand out of the way. He poked. He prodded. He pressed. “I did Doctor Frankenstein proud. Maybe my step-mother was right. I should’ve been a real doctor. At least I wouldn’t have risked my veterinary license stitching you up.”

“I don’t—”

“I know. I know. You don’t like hospitals.”

“It’ll take more than a little thump to get me in one again.”

“Little thumps don’t require stitches. Little thumps don’t give you a concussion. And little thumps don’t get you almost killed.”

“Not this again.”

“Yes. This again.”

He raised his hands and took a step back. “Do me a favor.”

“What’s that?”

“The next time one of your clients waves a gun around, stay out of the way.”

“What in the purple hell did you expect me to do? Let her kill herself?”

“You should’ve gone for help.”

“Ms. Sims wasn’t trying to hurt me. Her dog, her baby, dropped dead. She was distraught, disturbed. If I hadn’t nosedived into the bench grabbing for the gun, I doubt I’d’ve had a scratch on me.” Audrey squeezed her head to keep it from exploding.

“You’re not Superwoman. Bullets won’t bounce off you.”

She didn’t have the energy for this. “Finished?”

“Not hardly.” Scott tilted his head and gave her that sexy half-smile. That devilish smile. That maddening smile the lucky few had followed to his bed.

It was too painful to think about, and not just because of her headache, so she pushed it from her mind. “Thanks for letting me crash at your place last night. And for stitching me up.”

She’d stuffed everything she owned into her truck and U-Haul trailer. That wasn’t saying much since the truck and trailer were small.

“Staying at a hotel by yourself with a concussion wasn’t and option. As for the other, I don’t know how you talked me into it. You’ll probably have a scar.”

“Not a problem as long as your malpractice is paid.”

A laugh rumbled his chest, but the smile quickly slid from his lips. “You should stay a day or two. Make sure you’re really okay.”

Audrey scooched back and propped herself up against the leather headboard. Her brain protested behind the fireworks and the nine-piece drumline. “I’ve only got thirty days to finish the repairs on my uncle’s house. I have to leave today. I’ll call you from the road, let you know I haven’t bled out into my head.”

“Not funny.” Scott frowned but kept her gaze. “I’m due at the animal hospital at seven. I’m going to miss having you around. Guess I can’t talk you into staying for good, huh?”

“What?” Her voice jumped two octaves. “Who’s the one who stood in my kitchen two weeks ago and told me I should go? ‘This is your last chance to make good on your promise to your uncle,’ you said. ‘Take a chance on your dream,’ you said. Don’t even—”

“Down, girl.” Scott eased her back into the pillows with a hand on her shoulder.

Thank God. Hells-bells clanged in her head.

“Forget I said anything. At least sleep for a few more hours and then head out. You don’t look so hot.”

No kidding.

He patted her leg and by the way he didn’t get up to leave, she knew he wanted to say more, but he wasn’t any better at goodbyes than she was. Then Scott braced his hands on either side of her head, and planted a quick kiss on her nose. Like an adult to a child.

It might have hurt less if he’d eviscerated her with a spork.

She was leaving Texas. This morning. For good.

She snagged his tie. “If that’s the best you can do, Romero, it’s no wonder your girlfriends leave you.”

Why had she baited him? He couldn’t refuse a challenge, any more than a dachshund could refuse table scraps.

Was her mind muddled from the concussion? Or was she finally thinking clearly? One kiss. That’s all she wanted.

Like a lover, not a friend. Stupid. He’d locked her in the friend-zone years ago.

Except for the night of her high school graduation.

And two weeks ago when he’d convinced her she should leave.

The look in his eyes was the same now as then. Want, need, hunger.

Hand over hand she pulled him down. His lips brushed hers. Her breath caught. She blamed the

concussion. Her hands trembled. She blamed the pain. Her heart hurt. She blamed herself.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, deepened the kiss, tasted the coffee on his tongue, smelled the subtle tang of surgical scrub that never quite left his skin. She tilted her head, and he nipped her lips, traced the line of her jaw and down to her pounding pulse at the base of her neck. She guided him on top of her, his weight braced on his arms, but she drew him down until his full weight pinned her.

She floated.

No fears, no worries, no will power.

No wondering if she should stop or if she could stop – because she didn’t want to stop.

Meet Judy Bruce, the Author Behind The Wind Series #FridayReads #books #AuthorInterview

Judy Bruce

It’s not often I meet an author who creates such vivid characters in a Midwest small-town setting that I feel like I’ve grown up and intimately know them. Such is the case for Judy Bruce and her Wind series. She’s got an uncanny ability to write mystery/suspense and I really enjoy reading her books. I begged and pleaded for an interview which she agreed to. It’s my great pleasure to introduce Judy Bruce. Take it away, Judy!

What is your writing process?

Mulling—that’s the start. I get ideas rattling around in my noggin, but they need time to come together into something coherent. With the Wind Series, I already have my location and many of the characters, so I need a central event—a cross burning In Fire in the Wind, and new, necessary characters.

Are you a plotter or a pantster?

I am definitely a plotter: I develop my central idea, write down plot events, characters, time of year, and just keep finding more ideas and writing these thoughts down on the stashes of paper I keep in easy access throughout the house.

First, I make a general outline based on a three-act structure, always remembering to put plenty of important events in the middle of the story. Meanwhile, I keep stirring my brain for more ideas as I complete outlines for each part. Part one and two will have a more complete outline, with basic ideas in part three. Dialogue gets added to each part as I think of them.

Then I’ll get the itch, and I’ll start writing, always adding ideas to other parts of the story. I’m a Baby Boomer, so I still use paper—lots of it. I’m very good at recycling, so that eases my conscience.  I’ll push through to the end. I always feel a tremendous letdown when I finish, so I ease that by jumping right into my revising process.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Sometimes a name is important to the character, sometimes it’s not. My main character is Megan Docket, a short, strong first name and an ethnically-appropriate last name. Docket was also the name of the notebook brand I was using when I started the series. She’s a lawyer, and the name also has a legal meaning.

Other times, when I name someone, I’m just having fun—Melvin Poots is a retired minister as is Eldon Strumple, which I think sounds Dickensian. I’m not naming characters in a STAR WARS movie, so I need to keep names appropriate in terms of age, gender, and ethnicity.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

My best accomplishments have nothing to do with writing—they involve marrying a good man and giving birth to two wonderful children.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I hope to be doing exactly what I’m doing now—writing.

What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?

My least favorite part of this whole process is marketing. I just wanna write, ya know? I publish with a small press, so the marketing is my task. And if I’m marketing, then I’m not writing.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

Subjects that I wouldn’t want to write about include rape (it’s not my experience and I just don’t want to deal with it). Also, I don’t like child abduction, bullying, etc. I don’t write about things I don’t enjoy seeing, reading, etc. Reading the newspaper is bad enough.

Is this your first book? How many books have you written prior (if any?)

Fire in the Wind is the fourth book in the Wind Series. Lies in the Wind, a murder mystery, should be published in fall or winter of 2017. All eight books in the series have been written. I’ve also written a World War II story called Death Steppe—a Russian war widow is sent to the front as a medic where she meets an injured German officer. Things don’t go well.

Do you write naked? What is the biggest fib you’ve ever told? Have you ever been in trouble with the law? Have you ever gotten into a fight?

I guess I’m pretty boring because I don’t write naked, and I’ve never been in trouble with the law. I’m a generally truthful person, but because I write fiction, I’ve told thousands of lies, more with each book!

Do you drink? Smoke? What’s your vice?

Here again—boring. I don’t have any addictions.  I don’t smoke. My mother died of emphysema, so that was never happening. I drink here and there—Saturday night is movie night in the Bruce household, so that means a glass of red wine and Reduced-Fat Wheat Thins! Yeah, I’m a crazy lady. Some great writers come from dark life experiences—mine has been pretty sunny, except for family deaths. So I rely on a vivid imagination and the persistent need to tell stories. I’d rather be an unsuccessful writer without demons. Have you ever looked into the background of Virginia Woolf? No, thanks.

What were you like as a child? Your favorite toy?

As a child, I responded to the fact that I had two older brothers. So I played baseball and G.I. Joes before I played Freeze Tag and Barbies with younger sisters. I recall a doll I loved, Bridget. She had hard plastic skin and a head that kept falling off. My dad used black electricians’ tape to hold it on. Later an uncle came up with a more durable solution—tar. I only remember carrying her around naked, but she must have had some clothes at some time. My daughter still has that doll in her closet, now with clothes.

What do you dream? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?

Dreaming in character—I’ve done that many times with Megan, usually when I’m writing a first draft. It’s weird when I dream as Megan. The setting was always at my childhood home with my parents, now deceased, and a younger sister, also deceased. They’re pleasant dreams without much plot, but so odd.

Fire in the Wind

Title: Fire in the Wind (Wind Series #4)

Author: Judy Bruce

Genre: Mystery, Suspense, Fiction

Book Blurb:

The fourth story in the “Wind” series finds Megan outraged by a cross burning on her land, and she forms the Night Posse and then strikes back. Meanwhile, she is saddened by the tragic illness of her dear friend, James. After her new boyfriend is killed, she is jailed for his murder. Later she fights to the death in the darkness against an avenger. An undercover cop pursues her. When a dying James attempts to end his life, Megan is forced to act.

Mrs. N’s Review:

Life is never easy and fraught with pain. For Megan Docket, truer words haven’t been spoken. She’s still reeling from the murder of her unborn baby girl, the pain rendering her inconsolable.

Megan knows something is wrong and as she looks out onto her land, surrounded by friends and family, fire lights the sky. A fiery cross of hate on her property and anger burns in Megan’s belly. Who would do such a thing? The KKK haven’t been seen in her community so who’s behind it? It’s an omen, only Megan hasn’t any idea where to turn.

James, her dear friend and father-figure, is struck down with a stroke. If it hadn’t been for Megan sensing it, he’d probably be dead. As James recovers in the hospital, Megan must come to terms with James’ ill health.

Days before her divorce from Brian is finalized, men are swarming around her like bees to honey. There’s her current boyfriend, Zane, who is dealing with PTSD. Brian, her soon-to-be ex-husband, wants to come back, making empty promises. There’s newcomer Raz, an Arab Christian man, who makes Megan’s life more complicated (is that even possible). Then there’s Jay, a salesman who melts her insides with his sultry gaze. It’s raining men for Megan and she must weed through the platitudes to discover who’s honest and true. But when Raz is murdered after they have an argument and Megan is arrested, has her tormented past caught up with her? Only the Wind knows for sure…

I know I said this before, but this is Judy Bruce’s best book yet. From emotionally-charged life events to being arrested for murder, Megan finds herself at a crossroads between love and pain. Which path does she choose? Or is the choice out of her hands? An intriguing sub-plot and one that made me contemplate things.

The main plot is two-fold: quality of life after a stroke and racial hatred. Events such as cross burnings and discrimination based on religion/skin color are at the forefront of Fire in the Wind. Bruce doesn’t shy away from these societal issues and I, for one, am glad. She lays bare how hatred festers and is illogical. Beautifully written and I wish I could force hate groups to read this book.

The second part of the plot deals with quality of life after a stroke. James wrote in his will a Do Not Resuscitate order and made it very clear he didn’t want to live off of machines. Derek and Vonny are James’ children who are trying to deal with the situation as best as they can but don’t want to say good-bye to their father. Bruce creates an interesting scenario and while I don’t offer my personal opinion here, Bruce exposes Megan to all the conflicting emotions that comes with assisted death/suicide. It touched me so much that I cried. Yes, I was so immersed in the story, I couldn’t help myself.

Fire in the Wind is an unconventional mystery/suspense that I couldn’t put down. Plot twists kept me trying to figure out what was going on before it was revealed. I enjoyed Megan’s men troubles and found myself laughing out loud at a few lines. I can’t recommend this book enough! A must read!

Favorite Character/Quote:

“The hands still held me. Why was I bound to so much pain? They all hurt me – Dad, Mom, Bill, Brian, Zane, Beverly, James, Derek, Vonny, even Scottie. The people I cared about the most hurt me the most. If I gave Jay the chance, he would probably hurt me, too.”

Genre: Historical Erotic Romance / Mystery & Suspense

Book Blurb:

Soon, however, she begins to suspect her aunt of hiding something nefarious. Determined to learn the truth behind the strange goings on, she sets out on a quest for the truth. A quest that leads to danger, and trouble with the law, and a very handsome smuggler with a firm hand and smoldering, sexy eyes who is as determined to keep Elizabeth safe as she seems to be to put herself in harm’s way.

But he already has a preventative officer hot on his heels who is determined to end his career and throw him in jail – or worse. The beautiful, headstrong Elizabeth is a complication he does not need. But she, too, is hot on his heels – and irresistible. Now he must avoid capture, and find time to discipline this woman with an appetite for adventure, who seems determined to steal his heart.

When these two are together passions ignite, sparks fly, and danger lurks around every corner. Can Elizabeth and William avoid the law? Will they finally find the happiness that has so long eluded them both?

Excerpt:

She closed the library door and immediately went over to the fireplace with her lantern.

She managed to light the candle in it with the tinder box she’d been given and then pulled on the fire poker once more. The entrance slid open and she ducked down to go inside. She was so keen to explore that she didn’t consider that it might be dangerous, and simply stepped into the tunnel. There was a catch just inside the tunnel that closed the door behind her.

Elizabeth took a deep breath and walked forward with her lantern lighting the way. The tunnel was all wooden paneling at first and so she thought she must still be inside the house. But she soon came to some steps that led a long way down. Then she had to be careful, holding the lantern and her skirts up around her as she made her way carefully down them. When she reached the bottom, the walls were roughly hewn rock and she felt that thrill of adventure again as she realized that she must be underground somewhere.

Elizabeth was so preoccupied with her thoughts that it was a complete shock when she was suddenly grabbed from the side. She dropped her lantern with a shriek and the glass casing smashed. The candle sputtered out and she was left in complete darkness with the man who had grabbed her. He covered her mouth to stop her cries and held her tightly against him.

Elizabeth kicked and struggled in panic before biting hard into the hand that covered her mouth. The man swore but held onto her.

“Curiosity killed the cat, sweetness,” the man purred into her ear, causing her neck hairs to stand on end. “And if you bite me again you little hell cat, I’ll bite back.”

She shivered in fear, and something else she’d rather not admit to, at the sound of that voice. It was the handsome smuggler from last night – the leader. Although Elizabeth was scared of what he might do with her for meddling, she hoped that she could reason with him, especially if she let him know who her aunt was. However, all coherent thought stopped as he ran a hand over her body.

TamingTheSpy

Title: Taming the Spy

Author: Vanessa Liebe

Genre: Historical Erotic Romance / Mystery & Suspense

Publisher: Blushing Books

Book Blurb:

Cameron Blakeney is a man on a mission. Well, more than one, actually. Not only does he wish to reunite his brothers, separated from him in childhood, but he’s a spy for the Crown. When he’s tasked to observe two French spies in Portsmouth, he hopes to use the opportunity to locate his youngest brother, too. What he’s not expecting is to be working with a co-agent in the form of the lovely, undisciplined Lady Arabella.

Lady Arabella Willoughby enjoys working as a female spy and is looking forward to her latest assignment. However, when she discovers her co-agent is Cameron Blakeney, she’s not so enthralled. Her one-time childhood friend and hero seems to relish taking her to task over the slightest ‘misdemeanor’.

Their mission sees them traveling across the beautiful English countryside, but it is all they can do to stay focused on their goal and not each other. For his part, Cameron is enjoying teaching Arabella new things. Things like how to reveal secrets written in invisible ink, and how to pleasure a man with her mouth.

Arabella is a devoted student and learns all of her lessons well. Lessons that include learning to find pleasure in being over Cameron’s knee, bare bottom upturned, legs spread, and with his hand coming down to help her realize the error of her headstrong, reckless actions.

Publisher’s note: This suspenseful romantic spy story contains scenes of domestic discipline and explicitly described sexual scenes.

Excerpt:

Cameron knocked on the spymaster’s door and entered.

“Good morning, Cameron.”

“Good morning, James.”

The two men had known each other for years and Cameron was glad that at least here in this office he could be an ordinary man again.

“How’s the estate?”

“Flourishing,” Cameron told the older man with pride. “Despite personal circumstances, my father managed everything with great efficiency. I barely have to do anything. I also have a very capable steward.”

James Coleridge nodded. Then pierced him with an intelligent gaze. “And your brothers?”

Cameron actually felt a lump in his throat at mention of them. They’d been separated for so long. “As you know I’ve found one of them, Gabe. Along with his wife. I’m continuing my search for the others. I believe William may be down in Cornwall, so I have sent runners there to find out.”

“Well, I have a mission for you and while you’re doing it, it may offer you an opportunity to search for your youngest brother.”

Cameron was immediately intrigued. “What do you mean?”

The other man clasped his hands and leaned on his elbows on the desk. “I have knowledge of two French spies coming to Portsmouth.”

A growing sense of anticipation was felt. This was what he was meant for—code breaking, dangerous undercover and intelligence gathering work, not dancing with pretty debutantes at balls.

“Do tell me more, James.”

“You’ve heard of Brochand & Fouché?”

Cameron raised a brow. “I believe so. Amongst my travels for the Crown.”

“They’re coming to England to gather intelligence from certain French engineers studying here.”

“Naval and industrial spies?”

“Exactly so. They’re landing in Portsmouth, so they’ll begin with the naval intelligence. I strongly suspect that their final destination will be London to mix with the political elite of the haut ton.”

Cameron rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “The engineers would be unable to attend social gatherings of course. Do they have an aristocratic contact?” If there was a traitor, Cameron wanted to know.

James gave a brief shake of his head. “Not that I’m aware of. It will be part of your role to find out. I believe they will have to coerce or blackmail someone into helping them. Or they may bribe someone, in which case do they have finances available to them?”

Cameron’s jaw tightened. “There’s bound to be some fool with pockets to let or a gambler they can exploit.”

“Well, you’ll be following them around, so you can discover all of this for me, including any money trails,” the older man said.

Cameron’s eyes widened. “Following?”

“Yes. Don’t look surprised, Cameron. You’re ideally placed for this task. I want you to watch them in Portsmouth, follow them around in various disguises and report back to me. If they send any correspondence, I want you to intercept it and read it. If it gives away quantities of armaments, I wish for you to downgrade them. And send a replacement. If not too much is given away, you can reseal the letter.”

“Yes. Fine.” Cameron was used to operating in such a manner. “And if they leave Portsmouth?”

“Send a message back to me, but always follow them. I want to know everywhere they go, who they meet, especially once they are here in London. You can be yourself at social events, as can your co-agent, for you are both already well known amongst the ton and can mix naturally with the political elite, without drawing attention to yourselves.”

The sudden mention of a co-agent surprised him. Cameron had always worked alone before. It was less dangerous. “My what?” He couldn’t his displeasure.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

“Stand and deliver!”

The demand came loud and clear, as Lady Caroline Godwin’s coach came to a sudden stop. She sucked in a deep breath, holding onto the sides of her bench seat to brace herself against falling off. Her maid did the same, looking up at her in fright. “Oh, my lady. It’s a highwayman. I knew we shouldn’t have travelled at night.”

Lady Caroline couldn’t have agreed more. However, upon receiving news that her father was gravely ill and had lost a fortune at cards again, she knew she must leave London and return home. Travelling at night to get there as quickly as possible had seemed worth the risk. Not only did she need to know exactly how much her father had lost, she knew that her mother wouldn’t be able to cope with the situation. Her father had suffered a stroke immediately after losing and was currently bed bound.

Lady Caroline tried to reassure her maid. “I need you to be calm, Maisie. If we do as the rogue asks, we will come to no harm.” Yet after the initial shout, there was no sign of the highwayman. Furious both at her father for gambling away his money, and for getting stopped like this, Lady Caroline was feeling brave rather than scared. She was about to get out of the coach and see what was going on, when there were a few muffled curses from above them, a few thumps and then silence. She frowned, straining her ears to hear more.

“He’s going to kill us all!” cried Maisie fearfully, before fainting.

Lady Caroline looked at her maid lying in a crumpled heap on the bench seat opposite and couldn’t help feeling even crosser. “For heaven’s sake,” she muttered. And what has happened to my coachman and footman? “Frank? George?” she called out. She was met with silence.

She gasped as the door was suddenly pulled open and a tall, masked figure appeared, holding a pistol. The man, dressed all in black and with a tricorn hat on his head, looked around the coach, before returning his gaze to her. The pistol was aimed at her. “Good evening, my lady.”

Lady Caroline stared at him. The moonlight shone down on him, but didn’t reveal much, due to his dark clothing and black eye mask. She could make out sensual lips though, her gaze drawn to them because it was the only part of his face she could clearly make out. Then her gaze dropped to the pistol aimed at her and she felt renewed anger. He’d caused her maid to faint, he’d done god knows what to her male servants and now he was aiming a weapon at her. She raised her chin and glared at him. “It was a good evening, until you came along,” she told him. “What have you done to my coachman and footman?”

The highwayman had the nerve to grin at her. “They’re gagged and bound, my lady. But unhurt.”

He climbed into the carriage, sitting down opposite her, on the edge of the seat, next to her unconscious maid. “Now, if you don’t mind handing over some of your baubles, I will leave you in peace.”

Thanks to her father, Lady Caroline didn’t have much in the way of jewelry. What she did have held no value. She looked down her nose at him. “I’m afraid you’ve robbed the wrong coach tonight.”

EXCERPT:

She stared into his deep blue eyes, feeling the warmth of them. Her stomach somersaulted. Holding him this close was dangerous. She tried to warn herself but her body refused to listen to the commands her brain was sending out. He watched her intently. What was he thinking? Her heart beat sped up until it was pounding in her chest. The heat from his body liquefied her muscles and his manly scent, so intoxicating to her filled her lungs.

Pressed up against him, she could feel every hard pane of his chest. Her breath caught in her throat as desire flooded her. She shifted, an urgent ache gathering between her legs. Her mouth dried even as her belly quivered. Moving her hands from around his neck, she cupped his jaw.

Adelaide swallowed with difficulty. He wasn’t pushing her away—nor was he encouraging her.

Insufferable man.

Whatever happened between them would be her choice she knew. She—Adelaide Montgomery—for the first time in her life needed to make the first move and the idea both thrilled and terrified her.

“Adelaide—”

She cut him off when she crushed her lips against his. She didn’t think, just felt. Allowing desire to take her where it wanted to go. While afraid of rejection, the fear of always wondering ‘what if’ overrode her reservations and made her bolder than she’d ever been before. She took what she wanted, and she wanted him.

His lips were soft beneath her own as his hand on her back pushed her more firmly into him, stoking the fires within, feeling almost brazen as she sucked on his tongue and he moaned.

She deepened the kiss, one hand sliding into his hair and tilting his head for better access. His tongue rasped against hers, sending delicious tingles down her spine. She had never kissed like this before—never had been kissed like before. What more had she never experienced before? It was one thing to be told what you were missing, it was quite another to be teased with the promise.

Antonio’s hand slowly inched up her thigh and beneath the towel, finally resting on her bottom. A hot rush of liquid heat pooled between her thighs. Every touch made her feel beautiful and cherished. Her body burned with delicious heat, a firestorm of sensation and yet she didn’t want to put it out, only to feed the flames more until it was consuming her. Until her entire consciousness was blind of all things except this burning need.
