Tha Rat Tunnels of Isfahan

Title: The Rat Tunnels of Isfahan (Scorpions and Silk Book 1)

Author: Alejandro de Gutierre

Genre: Historical Fiction, Fiction, Short Story

Book Blurb:

A resourceful amnesiac, abiding in a brutal desert prison in Ancient Persia, tries to help his fellow inmates and struggles to stay alive.

But when an opportunity for freedom manifests, matters grow worse than ever, and he must confront his deepest fears, or lose himself forever.

My Review:

A riveting story, taking place in Medieval Persia, opens with a man in a small prison cell discovering a deadly scorpion inside. Stark terror consumes him as he attempts to come up with a plan of attack. Hazy memories assault him even though he doesn’t remember anything before his imprisonment. Survival in this ancient prison is paramount and as he scratches and crawls his way to freedom, his only thought is to get to his son. Will he make it or is he beyond hope?

The Rat Tunnels of Isfahan beautifully portrays the human struggle to survive in the direst situations. When all that you love has been stripped away, is freedom a dream or is it all you have left to cling to? The author’s unambiguous narration draws the reader in and I loved it. This story is so reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe, it’s eerie. A short story that will make you think long after you finish reading. The ending was a partial cliff-hanger but not as bad as others I’ve read. A primitive adventure story revealing the human spirit battling against all odds.

Favorite Character/Quote:

“Some sat unmoving for hours, staring into a darkness even the desert sun couldn’t penetrate, their eyes seeing but not seeing, ears hearing but not listening.”

My Rating: 4.5 stars

alejandro de gutierre

Author Biography:

Alejandro de Gutierre is a writer living in California. His first book, THE RAT TUNNELS OF ISFAHAN, was published in Sept., 2017. Book One of a trilogy, RAT TUNNELS has been described by some of its early readers as “emotionally engaging,” and full of “great detail; Super nail-biting.” Book Two will be published later in 2017, and Book Three in Spring of 2018.

Alejandro was born and raised in Tacoma, WA, and obtained a BA in English from Salem, OR’s Willamette University after a brief flirtation with Chemistry and Theater (in that order).

More about Alejandro…

Alejandro decided to become a writer in July of 2014. He awoke one day that month, and realized that he LOVED music, but didn’t love MAKING music, something he had been trying to do off and on for twenty+ years. He jumped into his car and drove to the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona alone, and after an excruciating hike into the Grand Canyon, he bathed in the waters of a Colorado River tributary, and realized that what he really wanted to do was to tell stories. He has been diligently writing and / or learning about the craft of writing ever since that time.

Alejandro plans to use his writing to sponsor literacy efforts for 100,000,000 people around the world.
