Title: The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Magic Thief (Book 1)

Author: Diane Moat

Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Every animal can talk to you. You just have to know how to listen.

Pepper Neely is better at this than most, especially because she is in charge of pet sitting all the familiars in her neighborhood. A familiar is a pet magically linked to a witch or warlock. As a gnome, Pepper is no stranger to spells and sorcery. She also knows that, despite their special name, familiars aren’t all that different from regular animals. They get anxious when separated from their people, so Pepper uses her special gnome powers to calm them down. She watches Cranky the high-strung ferret, Frank the laid-back parrot, King Arthur the elderly tortoise, and many others.

Then, something terrible begins happening to the familiars. Someone is stealing their magic! It not only prevents Pepper from communicating with them but breaks their magical connection with their people. When King Arthur’s magic is stolen, his owner’s powers stop working too. Pepper can sense that the tortoise is very scared.

In order to protect the animal’s magic, Pepper decides to track down the culprit. With the help of her best friend, Luna, and her brother, Jax, Pepper fights to protect all of the special pets.

Excerpt:

Luna focused on the candle to her far left. Ten minutes later, the candle was still going strong. Pepper bit her lip, feeling sorry for Luna. She turned to stare at the uncooperative candle, and imagined a little wind blowing the candle out. Puff.

Suddenly, the uncooperative candle blinked out as if someone had snuffed it with their fingers.

Supernatural Pet Sitter The Curse

Title The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Curse (Book 2)

Author Diane Moat

Genre Middle Grade Adventure/Fantasy

Book Blurb

Pepper Neely is no stranger to dangerous situations. In The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Magic Thief, the young gnome defeated an evil witch who was stealing magic from the Familiars that Pepper took care of. She wouldn’t have survived without the intervention of a pack of werewolves, who endured painful, fiery spells to save Pepper’s life.

Now Pepper is determined to repay the werewolves for their sacrifice, no matter what it takes. She decides to break the centuries-old curse that keeps them in wolf form. At first, she keeps her plans a secret, but it’s not long before Pepper realizes she will need all the help she can get to end this curse. Magic is everywhere as enemy witches cast dangerous spells to stop Pepper.

Pepper and her family must trust the local witches and work together with them to fend off the deadly spells, find the curse, and break it—before the hostile witches get the best of them.

Excerpt

Scattered around the room were seven women, including Momma Fran and Maggie. An older version of Maggie nodded to them. “Welcome, Neelys. As you know, I am Naomi, of the Samson coven. We have gathered in response to your request to meet. So without further delay, I invite you to speak.”

Here I go. Pepper wished she hadn’t eaten that sandwich a few minutes ago, as there was a fifty-percent chance she was about to throw it up, right here. She felt as if she had argued her case a thousand times. Hopefully this would be the last. She tried to think of the wolves as she took a deep breath around the lump in her throat.

Pepper stepped forward and began, “Thank you, Naomi of the Samson coven. I am Pepper Neely of the Neely gnomes. As you know, several months ago, a witch named Kale was caught stealing magic from Familiars. She was caught, in part, thanks to me and my brother, Jax. When she escaped, she came after me, Jax, and my friend, Luna, who is also a witch.” Keep reminding them Luna was saved also.

“Luna was nearly killed by Kale. But instead, three wolves attacked Kale, saving all three of us. The wolves took great risks in doing this, and they were set on fire several times, giving us time to get away. I know without a doubt that the wolves saved Luna, myself, and my brother. I have taken on a blood-debt to pay them back. As part—” Pepper didn’t get to finish before the witches started talking.

“What does that have to do with us?”

“The werewolves are our enemies; nothing will change that.”

“Do you even know what that means? How can your parents—”

“EXCUSE ME!” A male voice from behind Pepper cut through the chaos. It took Pepper a moment to realize it wasn’t her dad or brother. Everyone quieted instantly, looking behind the Neelys. The male voice continued, as a man stepped out into view. “I believe Ms. Neely wasn’t finished.”

Mr. O’Brien! The warlock had vanished after Kale had stolen the magic from from his Familiar, King Arthur. Pepper had thought he needed time to heal from his broken heart. He looked better than the last time she had seen him. He was still thin, but his face didn’t seem as drawn or haunted.

Mr. O’Brien continued. “I apologize for being late, but I believe my invitation was lost in the mail.”

Supernatural Pet Sitter The Curse

Title: The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Curse

Author: Diane Moat

Genre: Children’s Fiction, Middle-Grade, Paranormal

Book Blurb:

Pepper Neely is no stranger to dangerous situations. In The Supernatural Pet Sitter: The Magic Thief, the young gnome defeated an evil witch who was stealing magic from the Familiars that Pepper took care of. She wouldn’t have survived without the intervention of a pack of werewolves, who endured painful, fiery spells to save Pepper’s life.

Magic is everywhere as enemy witches cast dangerous spells to stop Pepper.
Pepper and her family must trust the local witches and work together with them to fend off the deadly spells, find the curse, and break it—before the hostile witches get the best of them.

My Review:

Pepper is back for another great adventure and this time, she’s tackling an ancient curse. In Pepper’s last book (The Supernatural Pet-Sitter: The Magic Thief), she and her best friend, Luna, escaped the clutches of an evil witch, thanks to a pack of werewolves. Pepper wants to pay back the werewolves somehow and even goes so far as to visit the pack leader. He shows her how much pain the curse inflicts on the werewolves and she decides then and there to reverse the curse.

When Pepper confronts the local witch council about her blood oath (as well as the blood oath of her family who support her 100%), not all are pleased with Pepper’s decision. It was witches who placed the original curse on the werewolves centuries ago. Several enemy witches cast spells on Pepper and her gnome family in an effort to stop them reversing the curse. Luna, Pepper’s best friend and a fledging witch herself, and her family help the only way they know how. Can Pepper reverse the curse or will she be the blood sacrifice?

I loved this middle grade paranormal story even better than the first one. All of my favorite characters are back, even King Arthur. Grandma Nonna is back and has a larger role than in the first book, which I loved. The plot moves quickly with plenty of character development and magical realism. It’s not too dark, though, so it is perfect for ages eight and up. There’s also a well-developed mystical lore that unfolds throughout the book. Moat’s world-building is impressive and realistic, as far as witches, werewolves, gnomes and other creatures go.

Not since Harry Potter, have I read an engrossing paranormal series for kids and adults. If you like all things Potter, give Pepper and the Supernatural Pet-Sitter series a try. You won’t regret it!

Favorite Character/Quote: Pepper. I know I said she was my favorite in the first book and the same goes for this sequel. She’s such an honest, engaging character and I’d love to have her as one of my friends in real life. I really got close to her in this book and her integrity and bravery made me wish I was more like her.

Where to Start If You Are Thinking About Writing by @DianeMoatAuthor #amwriting #FridayReads #kidlit

Writing post graphic Diane Moat

Throughout your life you’ve thought about writing, but it seemed too overwhelming. I’m here to tell you it’s not. That old cliché about everyone having a story to tell? It’s true. Your story may be true, or it may be one you’ve only seen in your mind, but it’s there.

When I turned 50, all of my friends were doing spectacular things to celebrate their big birthdays. One friend even trekked the Himalayas. Another parachuted for the first time. So along with the stress of my milestone birthday, there was this invisible bar set for me. I had to come up with something amazing.

I hadn’t written anything since my High School essays. Most of my adult life, I had been involved in dog rescue. There were countless times when I’d heard of an animal abuser who’d done something terrible to an animal. I (or another rescuer) would say, “If only I could get my hands on that person, he/she would never do that again.”

Over time, I had halfway created a story in my mind, where I was able to stop an animal abuser. Could I write that story? Could I? I began researching how to write, then how to publish a novel, and here’s what I found.

Anyone can write, and publish, a book. Really. Whether you put together your family recipes, write about your struggle with weight loss, or create an entirely new world. There are resources out there which can help you every step of the way.

The only thing you really need is desire. If you just know you could write something great, you are already there. The internet is a wonderful thing. You can find technical information on writing, support groups for writers, and every type of advice imaginable. Websites like POTL are invaluable.

But I would caution you, don’t research yourself to death. The most important thing to do it WRITE. Notepad, iPad, laptop, desktop, chalkboard, stickie notes. It doesn’t matter. Just write. I had only written a few paragraphs to Dog Gone when I fell in love with writing. Do your research when you have a question or hit a bump. Don’t let anyone actually tell you how to do the writing itself.

So whether you are 15 or 50, you have a story to tell. Take that leap; I promise you will be glad you did.

Amazon 5 Star Review:

“Pepper Neely is a very special pet sitter because not only is she a little different in and of her own self—she’s a gnome—but the animals she’s responsible for are rather unusual, too. Most are witch’s familiars, and they’re magic. Now someone is trying to mess with them, and thirteen-year-old Pepper is on the case. This is a fun book with no rough edges for parents to worry about. The action is sweet but with many exciting twists and turns that show Pepper’s sterling qualities—and the gnome family is decent and tightly knit. Definitely something young people will enjoy and with nothing for a parent to worry about. Good story and I’m looking forward to the sequel.” – G. Miki Hayden

My Review:

Pepper Neely is not your typical thirteen-year-old girl. She’s a gnome who, in her spare time, pet sits for all the familiars (magical pets for witches/warlocks) in her town. She can communicate with animals and takes care of these pets when their owners are away. It’s only when she gets a phone call from a frantic warlock that Pepper realizes someone is stealing local familiars’ magic. Now, with the help of Pepper’s best friend and witch, Luna, and her brother Jax, Pepper tries to figure out who’s doing this dark magic and save the familiars. Will she be able to stop the magic thief in time or has Pepper put herself in mortal danger?

I loved this book! Filled with a magical world trying to co-exist amongst humans, it reminded me of Harry Potter but with gnomes, witches/warlocks, wood sprites and even werewolves. There’s family drama, supernatural elements, life lessons and a mystery to solve all rolled into one story. There’s plenty of action and the characters are fully developed. I’d rate it PG because there’s certain situations in which younger readers might not understand. Overall, a clean fantasy adventure both boys and girls (and adults) will enjoy. I highly recommend and can’t wait for the next installment in this series!

Favorite Character: Pepper. I love everything about her from her inner thoughts to her impulsive nature but it’s her love for animals that endears her to me. She cares not for herself but does anything she can to help those pets she sits for. Her caring spirit and her loyalty to her best friend, Luna, bursts from the page and I chuckled to myself each time she got in “trouble”. A true thirteen-year-old in every sense.

Familiars don’t do well when they are separated from their witches. That was how Pepper got into the business of pet sitting.

Pepper is a 12-year-old who pet sits magical animals. When someone steals their magic, Pepper must find the thief before the thief finds her!

Excerpts:

Luna focused on the candle to her far left. Ten minutes later, the candle was still going strong. Pepper bit her lip, feeling sorry for Luna. She turned to stare at the uncooperative candle, and imagined a little wind blowing the candle out. Puff.

Suddenly, the uncooperative candle blinked out as if someone had snuffed it with their fingers.

#

Pepper reached for King Arthur, but didn’t get to pick him up. As soon as her hands touched his shell, a strange thing happened: she saw and felt something that seemed like a terrible memory. A sharp pain began in her head as a picture flashed of someone wearing a cloak with the hood pulled up.

#

Pepper wasn’t sure what she was asking. “Maybe…could I… maybe I could help?”

Witches started shaking their heads, but Maggie elbowed them all away, moving toward Pepper. “Please. Please try to help her. She liked you when she met you before.”
