Are You Making Time for What Matters? #inspiration #grateful #timemanagement

time management

Are you making time for what matters?

Our lives are scheduled down to the last second. We’re so busy with work, family, activities, sports, etc. but I’m here with a very important question.

Are you making time for what matters?

This week has been chaotic for me. Between work, our business, household duties and family obligations, I’ve run myself ragged. My feet are swollen, my back aches and I’m exhausted. One thing has gotten me through this week: quality time with MR N. Every night, we sit together on the love seat and watch tv/dvds. I curl up next to him, close my eyes and take deep breaths. I let everything go from the day and just soak up MR N’s love.

No matter what’s going on in your life or how busy you may be, make time for what matters. It may be quality time by yourself, your significant other, your best friend, your pet, your kids; what counts is carving out time to be with that someone.

Make an appointment in your planner and never cancel. Prioritize your time so you can spend precious moments with what matters to you. It’ll be your oasis, trust me.

Make time for what matters… your very life may just depend on it.

My Review:

Time is a universal commodity yet so many of us don’t understand or utilize it properly. Now, thanks to over six years of research, Jean Paul Zogby is here to help us harness the power of time perception.

Starting with the psychology of how we perceive time, Zogby explains how we sense time, how our brains perceive time, what factors influence our discernment of time, how our personality and emotions determine how we observe time, how our memories alter time and how we can make every second count. Zogby isn’t basing his premise on his beliefs but on scientific research. Blending physics, biology, psychology and personal experience, Zogby teaches us how to quantify time and how best to manage it. It’s not about making lists or eating healthy, it’s all in our awareness of how time works. We have the power within and it’s all a matter of perception.

While there are a few concepts communicated in this book I don’t agree with, the overall theme I wholeheartedly support. Extremely well written, The Power of Time Perception takes time management to an almost spiritual level. Make every second count … a mantra I fully endorse. Highly recommend!

Favorite Quote: “We live in the moment when we stop living in the past, enjoy the present and look forward to the future.”

When Was the Last Time You Took Time Out to Relax? #inspiration #relax #TuesdayMotivation

time management

When was the last time you took time out to relax?

If it was longer than 24 hours, you’re not taking care of yourself.

The past few weeks I’ve been feeling exhausted. We had a stressful work week last week, yesterday was definitely Manic Monday  and I was stressed out! After MR N came home, I took some time to relax. My body and soul needed it.

What did we do to relax?

After dinner, MR N and I listened to three new Christmas CDs we bought. We turned on our Christmas lights, sat together on the loveseat and held hands. It was exactly what we needed.

But MRS N, you may be asking, I don’t have time to relax.

Make time for what matters. It’s not complicated. Even a few minutes a day helps immensely.

Today I am thankful for relaxation.

What do you do to relax? Tell me in the comments below.

Have the Courage to Say No and Manage Your Priorities #inspiration #motivation

priorities

Do you feel like your life is one big to-do list? Just when you think you have everything done, something else pops up?

It’s time we got our priorities straight.

The #1 rule in time management is figuring out what are the highest priorities and saying “no” to the rest.

I know how it’s difficult to say no. I struggle with that myself. But like Stephen Covey says, you have to have the courage to say no. Explain to the person how you would love to “insert activity/job” but you are swamped at the moment. Another time perhaps?

What are your highest priorities?

Write down your priorities in a day/week. Then rank them in order of importance. Post it somewhere where you can glance at it every day.

My top four priorities:

– MR N

– sleep

– health

– food

Once these are taken care of, I can move onto work and home responsibilities.

Do you have any tips and advice for managing priorities? Please comment in the box below. We can then help each other be more productive.

How To Know Which #WritingTips to Follow and Ignore #amwriting #TuesdayBookBlog #ASMSG

Peanuts Writing Advice

Writing advice/tips are everywhere.  Everyone is an expert, even Lucy from Peanuts.  How do you know what to follow and what to ignore?  The simple answer is to listen to your inner voice and to trust your instincts.  Let’s look at a few examples.

One of the most asked pieces of advice people ask is, “How do I become a writer,”.  In one camp there are the intellectual people.  They say that you must study grammar and writing via classes and workshops.  While I understand their concept, when it comes to creative writing (novel/prose/poetry) that logical approach doesn’t work.  William Shakespeare didn’t take classes at Oxford to become a writer.  He wrote his experiences and what he observed in Elizabethan times.

Another camp are what I call the free spirits.  I fall into this group and my simple answer is, “If you can write something down on paper and share it with others, you are a writer.”  Writers write.  You either are or you aren’t.  It’s not as complicated as people make it out to be.

schedule

“I never have time to write.”  This is a big issue for many writers and trust me, I understand.  I have struggled with this too and I can tell you that what works for me may not work for you.  Each writer’s life is different and each person has their own time perimeters.

I read an article a long time ago talking about writer’s block.  It showcased 20 writers and their helpful tips for overcoming writer’s block.  One of the tips really made me see writing in a whole new light.  She said, “I always tell my writing students to write 300 words every day.  It is basically a page and everyone has time to write one page.”

I thought about it and it soon became my writing goal.  I promised myself to write 300 words every day.  I put a sticky note up in my writer’s nook and looked at it every day.  I can tell you all that I was true to my word and kept that promise.  I wrote 300 words each and every day.  Some days I did more and some days I struggled to make those 300 words.  I did it and I felt so proud of myself.

Ask yourself, what word count would be appropriate for me?

Don’t say 1,000 words if you cannot do it.  Commit to a word count and make sure that it is not too lofty.  Don’t make it too easy for yourself, either.  This is a writing goal and it must propel you forward.

time management for writers

Time management is another key tip I learned from that article.  Being a writer is all about time management.  Many of us do have a day job, families and responsibilities.  Making time for writing can be hard but when you make it a priority, it becomes easy.  Schedule a block of your day/night in your time management planner and call it “writing”.  Tell your family/friends/roommates so that they know not to bother or interrupt you.

My writing time is in the afternoon from 1-4 pm.  I chose that time of the day to write because it works best for my life.  I shut off all the distractions and I concentrate on writing.

Writing advice is everywhere and it can be overwhelming.  Trust me, I’ve been there.

The best advice I can give you is to read everything out there, figure out what works for you and then trust your inner voice.  It will always guide you and never steer you wrong.

Remember the writing profession is constantly evolving.  Learn something new today.

Are You Making Time for What Matters? #timemanagement #MondayBlogs #entrepreneur

time management

Are you making time for what matters?

Our days are filled with people and projects pulling us in all directions. Time management is more important than ever. My question above get to the crux of the issue. Work is important and deadlines need to be met.

But are you sacrificing something else in the process?

When I’m scheduling my day, I make sure to leave my evenings free. Why? This is the time I spend with MR N. Come 5:30 pm, my priority is relaxing and spending quality time with him. Not only is it healthy for my stress level but it solidifies our relationship.

Today, make a list of five ways to incorporate what matters into your schedule. It could be spending time with your significant other, children, best friend, sibling, family, etc. It could be spending quality time by yourself. No matter what it may be, make time for it.

When you make time for what matters, you create balance in your mind, body and soul.

Ever Feel Like a Circus Sideshow? #inspiration #motivation #organization

organizing

Ever feel like you’re a circus act? Are you juggling all of the balls in the air or spinning plates, hoping that one doesn’t fall?

I sure do and this week, four of my plates came crashing down. I was oozing stress and when the plates started to crash around my head, I felt so defeated.

Why wasn’t I able to do this?

I’m organized. I have a planner and every minute of the day is scheduled.

It took my confessing all to MR N on Wednesday for me to realize what was at the heart of the matter.

I had taken on too much and the time had come to reset my priorities.

Confession: I have a big heart and I love helping people. When people come to me, it’s hard for me to say no.

I realized today that the time has come to set up some boundaries and to restore balance to my life.

How about you?

Has the time come for you to reset your priorities in your life and to restore balance to your life?

No matter what your line of work is, you need balance. It’s okay to say no if someone asks for your help. Be kind in your reply and let them know you have a lot going on right now.

Be like me and stopping those plates spinning. Close your eyes and repeat after me:

I am balancing my life. It’s okay to say no. I have peace flowing through my veins and I am at peace.

Say this to yourself when you are feeling stressed and off-balance. Peace will take over and you will be gliding across that tightrope of life.

getting things done

Do you wait until tomorrow to do what needs to be done?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a procrastinator. There’s a joke my mother tells about how it all started in the womb. I didn’t want to come out and I was two weeks late. LOL!

The secret of getting things done is to act!

So many of us put off things we need to get done until tomorrow. We figure it will wait until then.

I don’t have time.

I can’t be bothered right now.

I have too much on my plate.

The truth is that we need to manage our time better. Prioritize what needs to be done and then… are you ready…

DO IT!

We all have the same amount of time in the day and those who prioritize are the ones who are the most productive!

Are you managing your time or is it managing you?

Time management is something each of us struggles with.  We have a never-ending list of things to do and places to go.

This week, I have a lot to do and not enough hours in the day to complete them. How am I not running around screaming like Chicken Little? I manage my time.

Read the above quote.

I take full advantage of each and every minute of my day.  I have a list of things to do and I stick to it.  When there is a little lag time, I try to incorporate two things at once.

Need help with managing your time?

Get a daily planner, write down what you need to accomplish in the day and as you complete each task check it off. You will feel so much better than running yourself ragged.

6 Time Management Tips to Excel for #Authors #Writers & #Bloggers

Are you struggling with time management?

Guess what? You’re not alone. Many people struggle with this. I sure did.

One of the first things I learned as a writer/blogger/author is to manage my time effectively. Trust me, it was hard. I’m a creative person and it goes against my nature to be organized. I’m more of a go with the flow type of person and when I started writing full-time, it became evident that I needed to prioritize projects and tasks.

Ask a published author what’s the key to being a success, they will tell you time management. One of the authors I admire told me the other day, “Listen, you’ve gotta push down your rose-colored glasses and get to work. This is serious business, being a professional writer, and prioritizing is the key.”

I took the advice to heart and started thinking about ways writers, authors and bloggers can be more effective. I came up with five tips and they come directly from my experience.

1- Get a planner. I personally enjoy a paper one that I can keep beside me throughout the day. It has enough space for me to jot down everything I need to do in order as well as schedule future appointments. This is crucial for me as a blogger and book promoter as I need to stay on top of what’s being featured on my blog and when. If I didn’t have my planner, I’d be completely lost. If you prefer a digital one, there are many apps out there that can help you stay organized.

2- Every morning, prioritize your to-do list. I do this as I am having my breakfast. I look over all that I must accomplish and star the ones that have an immediate deadline. Things that must be done right away get first priority and then I move down the list.

3- Schedule your social media time. I have found this to be a huge time-saver. I’m a social person and I can literally waste the whole day on Twitter and Pinterest. It feeds my creative juices. I schedule my tweets and limit how much time I spend on social media. This way, I still can waste ten minutes here and there throughout the day catching up with friends and clients while still being productive.

4- Give yourself permission to say no. There will be moments when your planner is full and a fellow writer/author/blogger will ask for help. They need your assistance with a blog post or reading a WIP are just two example of this plea for your assistance. Give yourself permission to say no. Politely tell them you are swamped and then decline. I know how you feel. You feel guilty and figure you can squeeze their project into your already crammed schedule. Here’s the thing, you will be stressed out completely and something will suffer (most likely your sanity). It’s perfectly okay to say no. Explain you’re under a deadline and would love to help them in so many days when your schedule permits.

5- Reward yourself. At the end of each week, I reflect on all that I accomplished and give myself a little reward. Hard work deserves a gold star and treating yourself is a sure-fire way to keep you motivated. You are your own boss and you have to encourage yourself. I have a post-it note by my work station that says, “You are the employee of the month”. It makes me smile and inspires me to keep at it.

6- Balance your work time with your personal time. I observe this struggle among my fellow writers/authors/bloggers and this is possibly the most important tip of all. You need balance. It’s easy to get consumed in the writing life and forget to come up for air. An idea hits and you are off and running. Nothing else matters except for writing and books. I experienced this first-hand when my debut novel was released last September. It was all I talked about and some of my friends started to roll their eyes. “Can’t you talk about something else?” It was an eye-opening moment. I realized I needed to be more than my writing, more than my book, more than my blog. I started talking about all the stuff I love and balance was quickly restored. Take a break when needed. Blog about more than your book. Engage with your followers and allow them to see the real you. I did and it helped me tremendously.

Time management will not only make you a better writer/author/blogger but will make your life a lot more fun!

Schedule an Appointment to Relax Today

relax

I was talking about the past weekend with a friend of mine. I told her how MR N and I went out clothes shopping Saturday morning and relaxed in the afternoon.

“How do you have time to relax?” she asked.

“We make time.” I shrugged.

“Gosh, I should do that too.”

It got me thinking, maybe people should incorporate some time in their busy schedule to relax. We all live busy lives and have a million things to do. We have people clamoring for our attention and as a result, are utterly exhausted.

Read the quote and ask yourself when was the last time you scheduled some time to do nothing. Yesterday? This past weekend? Last month? Can’t remember?

It’s about time to schedule a relaxing appointment. Whip our your planner and book an appointment with yourself. Then shut off your phone and/or devices and just relax. Take your favorite beverage to a serene spot and relax.
