5 Things to Help You Through Writing When You’re Sick by @RuthACasie #amwriting #romance

RAC 5 Things to Help With Writing When Sick

In a perfect world, I’d begin my writing day after eight hours of sleep, a large cup of my favorite coffee, a clear idea of my story, a perfect outline, and all day to write.

It’s not a perfect world. But you knew that already. The overwhelming reason why my perfect writing day went out the window (or down the toilet) had everything to do with being sick.

It’s been a difficult season here in the Northeast. One day you’re romping around in the park in 70 degree weather and the next you’re plodding through your driveway in fourteen inches of snow!

I did everything right. I got my flu shot. I kept myself hydrated. I got seven to eight hours of sleep every night. I ate right and exercised. Then how did I get sick! Not only did I get sick, but it hit me the day after my daughter came home from the hospital with her new baby.

Here is our new Caylee Eva. I was quarantined for a week while I got over the brunt of my cold and finished my antibiotics.

Okay, so I shamelessly got a picture of my new granddaughter into this post. I digress.

Book blogs and seminars on writing stress that writing every day is key to sharpening your craft. It’s the old joke, how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.

But every day you don’t write your writing skills dull. It seems that writing dulls faster than it sharpens. After a week of not writing I knew I would have to work harder to get back into gear.

My cold had settled in my chest. Bouts of coughing and wheezing kept me up at night. Our new cold water humidifier helped some, but not enough. Cold medicines, cough medicine and even an inhaler got the symptoms under control by mid-week, but the rust was settling on my writing gears.

I was still tired, congested and chugging bottles of cough medicine but I made a large cup of tea with honey and lemon then sat down to write. So here is my list of 5 things that helped me along.

#1 READ

After a few days of not writing I found I was not close to the story. I read to get back into my character’s head. In truth, after I finish the first draft I usually step away from the story for a few days to get that distance. That way when I edit the story it’s with a fresh eye.

#2 Outline

I do this with all my projects, but after a few days of not touching the work it was the perfect time to update my outline and again, get back into the story. I use bullet points to note what generally happens in the chapter, identify the point-of-view character, and note in red anything that is missing. This gives me a quick view of what needs to be done.

#3 WRITE

Now, I’m ready to write. Depending on my energy level (and this time it was really low) I decided to add in those pieces that I identified as missing and removed them from the outline. Later in the week, when I felt better I was ready to move the story forward. I found that I tired easily and wrote in short spurts, but several short spurts were better than none.

#4 WORD COUNT

I keep my daily project word count on an Excel spreadsheet. I have a daily word count target and try to reach it. This is similar to having a deadline and surprisingly, I enjoy working toward the deadline. Last month, my local RWA chapter had its own writing challenge for the month, 30K words. I used my spreadsheet and was excited as I reached the goal.

#5 REST

Sometimes, no matter how much you plan or how diligent you are, your body tells you to stop. Another indicator is falling asleep at your desk. That’s not a pretty sight. Look. When you’re really sick, you need to put your work, as much as you love it, aside and let your body heal.

BONUS

One other thing you can do while you’re sick, journal. Think of it as research for a story that has a sick character. Write down how you feel, record how others respond around you, and dream. Your body may be defeated but your mind is fine. Dream out your story and when you’re ready to write it will be there.

Knight of Rapture Final Cover RACasie

Title: Knight of Rapture

Author: Ruth A. Casie

Genre: Historical Fantasy, Time Travel, Medieval

Book Blurb:

He crossed the centuries to find her…

For months Lord Arik has been trying to find the right combination of runes to create the precise spell to rescue his wife, Rebeka, but the druid knight will soon discover that reaching her four hundred years in the future is only the beginning of his quest. He arrives in the 21st century to find her memory of him erased, his legacy on the brink of destruction, and traces of dark magick at every turn.

A threat has followed…

Bran, the dark druid, is more determined than ever to get his revenge. His evil has spread across the centuries. Arik will lose all. Time is his weapon, and he’s made sure his plan leaves no one dear to Arik, in past or present, safe from the destruction.

But their enemy has overlooked the strongest magick of all…

Professor Rebeka Tyler is dealing with more than just a faulty memory. Ownership of Fayne Manor, her home, has been called into question. Convenient accidents begin happening putting those she cares for in the line of fire. And then there’s the unexpected arrival of a strange man dressed like he belonged in a medieval fair—a man who somehow is always around when needed, and always on her mind. She doesn’t know who to trust. But one thing is certain. Her family line and manor have survived for over eleven centuries. She won’t let them fall, not on her watch… in any century.

Excerpt:

Unsure, she touched the shield again. It was still. The scream, she was certain it caused the tremor. She searched Arik’s face. He wasn’t aware of it. The beat echoing in her head was almost a steady tone. Fear twisted around her heart. His blood stained the barrier. She was certain he would die if he kept this pace. She couldn’t wait.

She gathered her strength and with lightning speed built the chant inside her. When she couldn’t hold it back any longer she let it loose in a grief-stricken scream.

Everything stopped. The wind. His pounding.

They stood facing each other.

“No, Beka. No,” he screamed his arms spread out across the barrier. She watched the glazed look of despair spread across his face.

A small portion of the shield fractured, then another, and another. The tiny explosions gathered momentum until they built into a frenzy and every inch of the shield was cracked.

Then silence.

She hesitated but at last placed her hand on the shield. Arik did the same. Their hands separated by the splintered magick. The fractured shield trembled, small pieces tumbled around them. For a brief moment their hands touched and she felt his warmth and love.

A great force pulled them apart as if they were puppets at the will of a puppeteer. They struggled to their feet and ran to each other but before they could get to the opening the portal snapped closed and vanished.

His roar echoed through the mountains. “I will find you.”

“I love you,” she sobbed as the portal took her away.

Away from him.

Why I Like Medieval-Renaissance Heroes by @RuthACasie #guestpost #romance

Why I like Medieval-Renaissance Heroes: A Guest Post by USA Today Bestselling Author Ruth A. Casie

KnightofRunesFinalnew

Several years ago, my friend Joanna Chambers had a discussion. Joanna thinks Regency men are the uber Romance Hero. She gave me her top three reasons in a guest post in November.

Now, I agree Regency men look good, live in a world filled with titles, and appear to live a life of leisure.  I enjoy Mr. Darcy but Regency men are all too tame. Let me give you my top three reasons why I think Medieval-Renaissance knights are the best.

  1. Appearance

Some enjoy the breeches, shiny boots, tight coats and acres of snowy white linen. I love the shirtless look of a well-defined chest and ripped abs. It speaks protection, comfort and well, truly, their great to look at. I enlarged my book cover, Knight of Runes to 8.5×11 and keep it posted next to my desk.

Every so often, after my husband’s shower, he comes into my writing room in his towel and poses next it. He thanks me for not including his full face. We can both dream.

knight-hood-2065312_640

  1. Ascendance

Knights were members of the noble class. Likely candidates were chosen at boyhood and trained. A lesser or unlikely man could aspire to knighthood and reach his dreams, if he is found worthy. Knights, their code of conduct and chivalry, “Protect the weak, defenseless, helpless, and fight for the general welfare of all,” inspired literature and the foundation of courtship through the middle ages up until the turn of this century.  What would a romance be without a (k)night?

  1. Adventure

Knighthood comes with its requirements: save the damsel in distress, right the wrongs, and do away with the villain. Of course there were trials he had to go through to prove he was worthy. Usually he would somehow loose his shirt and give the damsel a glimpse of those perfect pecks and adorable abs.

Knights, not only had to prove themselves worthy on the field of battle (for his king, the damsel or even for himself) but also had to learn balance the command and control needed to succeed with his own wants and desires. It’s a lesson Lord Arik learns in Knight of Runes.

Druid Knight Series 2 Book Spread 250x250

What do you think?  Regency heroes or Medieval-Renaissance Knights?  Or something entirely different?

Genre: Medieval Romance, Romance, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance, Time Travel

Blurb:

When Lord Arik, a druid knight, finds Rebeka Tyler wandering his lands without protection, he swears to keep her safe. But Rebeka can take care of herself. When Arik sees her clash with a group of attackers using a strange fighting style, he’s intrigued.

Rebeka is no ordinary seventeenth-century woman—she’s travelled back from the year 2011, and she desperately wants to return to her own time. She poses as a scholar sent by the king to find out what’s killing Arik’s land. But as she works to decode the ancient runes that are the key to solving this mystery and sending her home, she finds herself drawn to the charismatic and powerful Arik.

As Arik and Rebeka fall in love, someone in Arik’s household schemes to keep them apart, and a dark druid with a grudge prepares his revenge. Soon Rebeka will have to decide whether to return to the future or trust Arik with the secret of her time travel and her heart.

Short Excerpt:

A man, club in hand, rushed at Arik. Before the attacker could bring his weapon into play, Arik pivoted around him. He raised his sword high, and slammed the hilt’s steel pommel squarely on the man’s head. Arik moved on before the man’s lifeless body dropped to the ground.

Willem and Simon, on either side of Arik, advanced through the melee. Their swift continuous swordplay moved smoothly from one stroke to the next, whipping through the air. They slashed on the downswing and again on the backswing, sweeping their weapons back into position to repeat the killing sequence. The knight and his soldiers steadily advanced, punishing any man who dared to come near them.

“For Honor!” Logan’s war cry carried from the small camp up river to Arik’s ears.

Arik stiffened. Both camps were now under attack. He pulled his blade from an attacker’s chest. The body crumpled to the blood-soaked ground. Arik breathed deeply, the coppery taste of blood in the air. “For Honor!” he bellowed in answer. His men echoed his call, arms thrown wide, muscles quivering, the berserker’s rage overtaking them.

The remaining attackers paled and fled headlong into the forest.

Motioning to his men to follow, Arik raced toward the camp. He could hear the shouts, and cursed himself for not seeing the danger. He crested the hill and came to an abrupt halt.

Logan’s sword ripped through the air as he protected Doward. The tinker drew his short blade and did as much damage as he could. But it was the woman Arik noticed.

Her skirt hiked up, she twirled her walking stick like a weapon with an expertise that left him slack-jawed. She dispatched the attackers, one by one, in a deadly well-practiced dance. A man rushed toward her, knife in hand. The sneer on his face didn’t match the fear in his eyes. She stepped out of his line of attack, extended her stick to her side, and holding it with both hands swept the weapon forward, striking the attacker across the bridge of his nose. Blood exploded from his face in an arc of fine spray as his head snapped back. Droplets dusted her face creating an illusion of bright red freckles. As he fell, she reversed her swing and caught him hard behind his knees.

He went down on his back, spread-eagled. She swung her stick over her head and landed a precise and disabling blow to his forehead that knocked him unconscious.

As she spun to face the next threat her eyes captured Arik’s and held. In the space of an instant, time slowed to a crawl. Her hair slowly loosened from its pins and swirled out around her. His breath caught and his heartbeat quickened as a rapturous surge raced through his body. Something eternal and familiar, with a sense of longing, unsettled him. In the next heartbeat, she tore her eyes away, leaving him empty. Time resumed its normal pace. Another attacker lay at her feet.

Arik joined the fight.

Two Worlds Collided by Karen Michelle Nutt @KMNbooks #romance #99cents #books

two-worlds-collided_final_med

Title: Two Worlds Collided

Author: Karen Michelle Nutt

Genre: Time Travel/ Rock Star Romance

Book Blurb:

Evie Reid, on a whim, agrees to travel back in time to 1997 to change bad boy Bellamy Lovel’s path of destruction. She’s smart with a college degree, but she’s still fan-girl crazy for the rock band, Civilized Heathens. Evie knows despite all Bellamy’s smiles and enthusiasm on the stage, he’s destined to end it all on one lonely night in a hotel room unless she can change his path.

Bellamy isn’t keen on having Evie as his personal assistant, hired by his band mates to watch over him, and keep him on schedule. However, there is something about the woman that sparks his interest, despite his best to ignore her. When darkness threatens to consume him, he realizes she may be the only light that will chase the shadows away.

Excerpt:

In this snippet, Evie and Bellamy officially meet for the first time.

She spotted Bellamy standing on the ledge a few feet in front of her. Fear rose up inside of her like a tangible force that urged her to go to his rescue. Her legs carried her swiftly and her hands grabbed his dress shirt with some kind of wild print on it, and she yanked him toward her.

Bellamy’s hands flew out in front of him as if to grab onto something to steady his fall. “What the–” Her cry of alarm muffled Bellamy’s curse when she realized he was going to land on top of her, but at the last millisecond, Bellamy twisted, grabbing hold of her as he fell onto his back with her sprawled on top of him in an unseemly manner. Her hair had come loose from the knot at the back of her neck. Her glasses were askew on her nose and she tried to adjust them as she pulled on her blouse, which had risen above her waist. Bellamy’s hot hands were on her flesh and for a moment she’d forgotten to breathe. She met his startled gaze and his lips pursed into a fine line.

“What is wrong with you, lady?” he said and shoved her away, not exactly rough but with a purpose to be as far away as possible from her.

She sat in a heap next to him, feeling a bit deflated that he didn’t appreciate her attempt to help. “I was saving you,” she said and lifted her chin.

“Saving me? Lady, you almost sent me tumbling over the edge.”

“I most certainly did not,” she sputtered. “And what were you doing up there, anyway? Who stands on a ledge and not think: Hey, I might fall to my death.” She rolled her eyes and that seemed to set him off.

His nostrils flared and he looked like he wanted to say more on the matter, but then he turned toward Leon, who stood there with his arms folded against his chest and his lips appeared to be twitching as if he were holding back a full out smile.

“You need to fire the security guard,” Bellamy stated, “that allowed this crazy broad up here.” He flew to his feet and brushed off his white pants that were smudged with dirt from the gravel rooftop. He flipped his curly hair away from his bright and beautiful blue eyes. God, he was handsome. A lean five-foot-ten, he appeared taller than he truly was, or maybe it was because she was still sprawled at his feet.

Leon cleared his throat. “Bellamy, I want you to meet your personal assistant.”

It took Bellamy a moment to realize what Leon meant, and then he shook his head. “No. Absolutely, no.” He narrowed his eyes on her, and she scrambled to her feet as graceful as she could, considering how she ended up there.

“I’m Evie Reid.” She extended her hand.

My Review:

I’m a romantic, through and through, and Knight of Runes is the epitome of Medieval Time-Travel Romance: a man tormented by his past mistakes, a woman flung into the past trying to find her way back, an antagonist bent on coming between the two lovers and history brought alive by a talented storyteller.

Rebeka is in the present day and she discovers she’s inherited a vast estate in England. It’s a good thing she’s a historian and a scholar because the previous owner wants her to continue researching the vast history of the manor. She goes on a tour and before she knows what’s happened, she’s transported back in time.

Lord Arik discovers Rebeka wandering his lands and at once, his suspicions are aroused. Is she a spy for the king or someone else? Is she the one responsible for what’s happening to his lands? He tries to keep her at arms length but there’s something about her he can’t put his finger on. He’s drawn to her and his desire runs rampant, pushing away his logic.

Rebeka doesn’t tell anyone she’s from the future; she’s afraid of the consequences if she does. So, she tells Lord Arik she’s a scribe sent from London but she knows Arik isn’t fooled. The more she’s around him, the stronger her feelings grow. Can she trust him with the truth or will he deem her a traitor?

Truthfully, I read the sequel to this book last year so I already knew the outcome. But that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this book. In fact, it allowed me to just let go and immerse myself in the world Casie has created. Filled with historically accurate characters, setting and druid lore, Knight of Runes is wonderful. I loved that Arik and Rebeka argued over ideas and concepts, much to chagrin of Lord Arik. Rebeka made him think and in Medieval times, women would never think to second-guess men, especially Lords.

The romance in Knight of Runes is sweeping and swoon-worthy. When Lord Arik realizes his mistake and sees Rebeka for who she is, he swoops in to save her. His desperation to save her melted my heart and made me yearn for my own knight (Mr. N).

If you’re a romance lover, this is a must-read. Casie has a true talent for storytelling (especially romance) and she’s quickly becoming my favorite author!

Favorite Character:

Rebeka. I loved everything about her, from her ability to blend in to her feistiness, and when I read the last page, I wanted more. She’s a warrior with internal strength she doesn’t even know she has and I secretly want a walking stick like hers. She’s proof-positive that there’s a perfectly-matched mate for each of us. She also proves that if you’re yourself and don’t compromise, men will be drawn to you.

Favorite Quote:

“His breath caught and his heartbeat quickened as a rapturous surge raced through his body. Something eternal and familiar, with a sense of longing, unsettled him. In the next heartbeat, she tore her eyes away, leaving him empty.”

Excerpt for Second Chance by the Sea:

“El, you okay? You seem to be someplace else.” He didn’t let her hand go.

She glanced at his eyes. The ones that made every woman who met him melt. “I was thinking about the day we met.”

He put his arm around her and drew her close. “Ah, you mean the day I gallantly saved your life.”

She laughed and snuggled closer. “You did not. I was tired that’s all.”

“Please, let me think you needed me. There are so few instances.” He kissed her forehead and went over to the captain to help with their luggage.

The smile slid off her face. For a moment she felt… alone. Need him? If there was ever a time she needed him it was now, but they were set on a collision course and she had no idea of the outcome. She shook off the uneasy sensation and grabbed some of the small bags. Alan was on his cell phone.

Threaded Through Time (Book One) by @SarahEttritch #Romance #MFRWAuthor #BookPromo

Title: Threaded Through Time (Book One)

Author: Sarah Ettritch

Genre: Time Travel Romance

Book Blurb:

A mysterious rhyme book and a full moon bring two time-crossed couples together in this time travel romance.

“For those who were born before or after their time…”

That described Pam. She’d always felt that she’d been born too late—there was no chivalry in the world anymore.

She’d only wanted to commune with the universe while reading a “moon rhyme” in the antique book she’d purchased from the local New Age shop. She had not expected guests—especially not Jasper and Margaret, summoned one hundred years into the future by the rhyme just as Jasper was proposing to Margaret.

Now the displaced visitors insist that they be returned to 1910, and Pam and her roommate Robin agree. But the rhyme won’t work until the next moon cycle, and in the intervening month, forbidden love blooms between Pam and Jasper, and Robin and Margaret.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Pam barked a laugh, then covered her mouth and giggled into her hand. If she were Margaret, she’d certainly be more familiar with Jasper. When he’d removed his jacket before helping her move the boxes…well, his cotton shirt had barely restrained his biceps when he’d lifted two or three boxes at once, and she couldn’t help admiring his ass as she’d followed him downstairs. His full head of sandy hair, neatly clipped moustache, and Roman nose contributed to his rugged handsomeness. And his red face when she’d measured his inseam had endeared him to her. Not wanting to embarrass him further, she hadn’t voiced her observation that he hung to the right. If only he wasn’t from 1910—and engaged. She felt a connection to him that ran deeper than physical attraction. It was his manner, his gentleness.

Out of all the people she could have summoned from the past, why them? Why him? Oh! She abruptly turned and grabbed Robin’s arm again. “Maybe I was able to summon them because Jasper and I were lovers in a previous life!”

Robin snickered. “You wish! And not that I’m giving any credence to past lives, but wouldn’t that mean you could have been Margaret?”

Pam grimaced. “Right. Scratch that theory.” She let go of Robin. “Margaret’s a lucky woman. What I wouldn’t do for a man like Jasper.” He was worth ten of the jerks like the one at dinner. “Anyway, no point drooling over what I can’t have. Let’s talk about tomorrow.”

“What about tomorrow?” Robin asked, her brow furrowing.

“I have to go to work.”

“And I have to go to class.”

“We can’t leave them here alone! How many classes do you have?”

“Two.” Robin sighed. “But one’s a lab. I guess I can skip them.” She raised a finger. “But only this once. You have to figure out how to send them back.”

“I will! You saw the marriage announcement. Have faith!” She blew out some air. “Look, I’ll pick them up some clothes on my lunch hour. Saturday, we’ll all go to Jake’s.”

“All of us? Are you sure that’s a good idea? He can’t know about them.”

Pam held up her hand. “I know. But Jake’s pretty intuitive.” She lowered her voice. “And I’ve heard he can see auras. He’s also a little psychic.”

Robin’s face screwed up. “How can he be a little psychic? He either is, or he isn’t, and my money is on isn’t. And I’m not going into that store. If anyone sees me there, I’ll die.”

Mirror of Love by @SamnaGhani #bookreview #timetravel #romance

mirror of love

Title: Mirror of Love

Author: Samna Ghani

Genre: Time Travel Romance, Historical Romance

Book Blurb:

Emma Miller is an intelligent woman who believes in thinking with her head instead of her heart. A total cynic, she does not believe in fairy-tale endings nor is she one to swoon or pine for some man. Her decision to visit Salar de Uyuni pretty much changes her entire perspective – about love, life and the truly important things in life.

Ashton Colyns is just like Emma. Cynical. Sarcastic. Witty. No idealistic notions for him either. But with his dry sense of humor and his irresistible charm, he manages to penetrate through Emma’s no-nonsense persona.

Amidst the excitement and adventure and through the complicated mess with Henry Tudor and Anne Boleyn, will Ashton and Emma finally realize they were meant to be together?

My Review:

Mirror of Love is the first book I’ve read by Samna Ghani and I was hooked from the first page.

Emma has always wanted to visit Salar de Uyuni in South America and right before her wedding seemed like the perfect opportunity. Her fiancé reluctantly agrees to let her go and off she travels (along with her three best friends) to this historical monument.

A chance meeting with a stranger (and a magic mirror) transports Emma through time and into the arms of Lord Ashton. Ashton is somewhat of an enigma to Emma yet she can’t stop thinking about him.

Lord Ashton likes Emma immediately and romance soon blossoms between them. When Lord Ashton asks Emma to help him with a delicate situation, she’s hesitant to help him. His charm wins her over and soon she is introduced to Henry Tudor and Anne Boleyn. Can she help Lord Ashton without losing her heart?

I loved this sweet romance and the only thing I would improve upon was that it was longer. It’s a short novella (only 58 pages). I read it in one sitting and the author weaves a gem. Complete with historical characters, beautiful setting and a simple plot, Samna Ghani makes me wish for my own magic mirror.

If you love time travel romance with dashes of historical places and people, pick up this short story. You’ll swoon, just like me.

I can’t wait to read more by this author!

Favorite Character:

Emma. Being thrust into Tudor England is difficult enough but Emma is quick on her feet and lovable as a heroine. She’s quick-witted, down-to-earth and has a propensity to get into trouble. “Off with her head.” laughs I loved everything about her from her logical viewpoint on modern-day love to the way she realizes what’s right in front of her.

Favorite Quote:

“There was something different about him today. He seemed more intense, more focused on her, making it difficult for her to concentrate.”

My Review:

Lord Arik is one determined man. After defeating Bran and the Dark Magicks, Arik plans on never letting his beloved Rebeka go. He lets down his guard and relishes being married to Rebeka. Big mistake. Bran has more tricks up his sleeve.

Rebeka is ripped out of Arik’s arms and travels through the portal to the twenty-first century. Rebeka is thrust into her time while Arik is back in the 17th century.  Tortured and separated, both work night and day trying to figure out how to be together again.

Arik uses dark magick and is able to come across to the 21st century. But when he arrives, he discovers Bran has taken Rebeka’s memories away. She has no memory of him or their love.

Can his love for her break the spell or will she be lost forever?

I’m a huge fan of time-travel romance and throw in druids, magick plus history, you’ve got one of the best books I’ve read since Jude Deveraux’s A Knight in Shining Armor.  I loved the story-telling ability of the author. Her words painted vivid imagery and truthfully, I was under her spell. The plot was complex, as was the characters, while the sub-plots kept me turning the pages. There was plenty of suspense and obstacles Arik and Rebeka have to deal with but the end-result was so satisfying.

What really made this book shine was the historical accuracy and the druid mythology she wove throughout the book. It was so real to me, I had to ask her where she got her druid information. She confided in me that there isn’t a lot of written history of the druids as they were primarily an oral society. The spells and mythology, she told me, she came up with on her own. Incredible!

I loved the couple, Arik and Rebeka, and the way they interacted with one another. Together, they’re stronger and cannot be defeated. It’s only when they’re apart and alone, that dark magicks can grab a foothold.

There are plenty of swoon-worthy moments and I highly recommend this book (and this author), especially to historical romance readers. I can’t wait to read other books by this author!

Favorite Character:

Arik. While I do love Rebeka, it’s Arik’s unconditional love that won my heart. Imagine for a moment, after doing whatever it took to be with your beloved and then she doesn’t remember you or the love you shared. It was heartbreaking to read but it made my heart swell because that’s true love. I also loved him as he got used to the 21st century. He’s everything a woman wants in a husband and he’s my vote for Book Boyfriend of the Year.

Favorite Quote:

“Sometimes I feel I don’t belong here. It’s a strange but strong feeling.” Her voice was a low whisper. His heart thundered. Did she remember?

What Lainey Sees by Laura Tobias #bookreview @Laura_Tobias #romanticsuspense

50_laineyfinal

Title: What Lainey Sees

Author: Laura Tobias

Genre: Time Travel, Historical Romance, Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Centuries ago, the passion they shared as Native American lovers ended in tragedy. Together again and unaware of the past, can they claim the love that’s rightfully theirs?

Seattle newspaper reporter Lainey Hughes is desperate to find her mother who has disappeared into a doomsday cult sequestered somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. She teams up with Gage Stuart, a jaded cop whose young son is also being held there. As they race up the coast in a kayak searching for their loved ones, Lainey’s visions show her the past . . . the present . . . and the future.

Lives are on the line. Love is within reach. And trust is hard to come by.

WHAT LAINEY SEES may help two wounded souls embrace their future . . . but only if they’ll learn from past mistakes.

My Review:

I’m a sucker for a romantic suspense and this book has it in spades. Not only that, it is a time travel romance (my favorite genre right now), too.

Lainey Hughes is a reporter and with one phone call, her life changes forever. A stranger says he has vital information for her and before she can get more information, she hears gunshots and then the line goes dead.

Both Gage and Lainey are trying to discover the truth about their relatives and work together to discover the truth. Along the way, Lainey and Gage are soul mates from over 200 years ago. Can they trust each other to unravel the truth or will they continue to make the same mistakes over and over?

I loved this book! The author does a magnificent job telling the story of Gage and Lainey through the years. The characters were realistic and touching. The suspense gripped me and I had to keep reading to see what happened next. The historical aspects were what made me fall in love with this book. I loved reading about the past and how Lainey came to grips with it all.

If you love Native American lore and historical romance, I highly recommend this book to you!

Character Interview Rebeka – Knight of Rapture @RuthACasie #Romance #BookPromo #MFRWAuthor

Character Interview Rebeka – Knight of Rapture

I’d like to introduce you to Professor Rebeka Tyler, from Kensington University in Upstate New York and Oxford University in England. Dr. Tyler has an interesting background that I think you’ll find as fascinating as the lady herself. Thank you for being with us today.

Thank you for having me, but I’m really nothing special.

Nothing special! I have the quote from your husband, Lord Arik, right here,” MRS N said flipping through her papers. “Ah, here it is. Rebeka never thought herself a warrior, a renowned authority on Medieval and Renaissance studies, yes, a martial arts amateur, absolutely, but a warrior, definitely not. But I couldn’t have saved the family or our beloved Fayne Manor without her by my side.” You do know it’s not everyone who can travel four hundred years into the past to find true happiness?

Why don’t we get on with your questions.

Certainly.

How did you first meet your writer, Ruth A. Casie?

“It was 2011. I was at Fayne Manor and decided to take the tour bus to see the standing stones at Avebury. Ruth was my seat-mate. We talked about the stones and their age then fantasized about what people from the past would think about things in this century.”

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

“Not, in a hundred years! I never thought anyone would think my life was that exciting. I’m a history professor. So, I went back in time four hundred years. Is that something to write about?” Rebeka winked at the reporter.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?

“The romance, for sure. What woman wouldn’t love a man who breaks all the rules and travels through time to rescue her? I’m humbled thinking about what he was willing to sacrifice to find me.”

Did you have a hard time convincing your author to write any particular scenes for you?

“Ruth had a difficult time writing the scene when Arik had to return to his century without me. He had promised me we would never be apart again. But to save me, he had to return without me. It took Ruth days to finally get to the place where she could write  Arik’s frustration and defeat. Each time she worked on that scene she cried and I cried with her.”

What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?

“Aside from spending time with Arik there are several things I like to do. I enjoy researching the old documents in Arik’s massive library. Some of the manuscripts date back centuries. They are excellent examples of well-kept codices.

“I also like to spend time with Arik’s nieces. The girls were orphaned before I came to Fayne Manor. They are dear to me. We have a good time together.”

Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?

“I love historic fantasy. Mine is a time travel story. It was difficult at first. In Knight of Runes I was a modern woman and in a man’s world. I thought as a history professor, specializing in this time period that I was prepared. Hardly. I had so much to learn about how to survive in the 17th century. Thankfully, Arik and the others wanted to learn about the 21st century. So in the end, I got to the live in the best of both worlds.

“In this book, Knight of Rapture, Bran, an evil druid, tricked me into the future. Arik’s the only one who can rescue me. He finds his way to me and gets a real taste of the future. He really looks hot on a motorcycle. Actually, he looks hot on anything!”

If you could rewrite anything in your book, what would it be?

“You mean change history. I wish Caylyn, Bran’s wife hadn’t died. That’s what drove Bran crazy and started the feud between him and Arik.”

Do you like the way the book ended?

“Yes, I love the way the book ended and I won’t say anymore. You’ll have to read Knight of Rapture to find out. When you do, let me know what you think.”

Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

“I’m glad you asked. Ruth has plans for a third story, Knight of Redemption. I have it on good authority that it will be out the middle of next year.”

What do you wear when you go to sleep?

“Nothing. Neither does Arik. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.”

What other profession would you like to try?

“If I chose another profession I’d be an herbalist. I love plants. I planted an herb garden at Fayne Manor. They thrived there. The villagers came to the garden often, so much so that I started the herbarium.”

What is your most favorite memory?

“My favorite memory is the day I packed up to leave for college. My dad was a history professor. He specialized in Celtic folklore. He gave me his walking stick. I had no idea that he was a druid grand master and that his walking stick was special. I took it with me everywhere I went. I felt lost without it. It’s my most prized possession.”

What’s your most favorite day?

“My wedding day, both of them. I married Arik at Fayne Manor in the 17th century and again in 21st. Both days were glorious. I love him more every day. He is my heart and my beloved.”

“That’s all the time we have for today. Thank for joining us today Rebeka. I’m sure my audience is eager to read about you and Lord Arik in Knight of Rapture.”
