Title: Traveller Inceptio

Author: Rob Shackleford

Genre: Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Action

Book Blurb:

If you were sent a thousand years into the past, would you survive?

With the accidental development of the Transporter, university researchers determine that the device sends any subject one thousand years into the past.

Or is it to a possible past?

The enigmatic Transporter soon becomes known as a Time Machine, but with limitations.

An audacious research project is devised to use the Transporter to investigate Medieval Saxon England, when a crack international team of Special Services soldiers undergo intensive training for their role as historical researchers.

The special researchers, called Travellers, are to be sent into what is a very dangerous period in England’s turbulent past.

From the beaches of Australia to the forests of Saxon England, Traveller – Inceptio reveals how Travellers soon learn that they need more than combat skills and modern technology to survive the trails of early 11th Century life.

My Review:

Imagine you’re one of a group of university researchers who, while trying to create technology for a security business, built a time machine instead. Would you be prepared if you transported back in time to 11th century Saxon England? Meet the Travellers, a group of modern-day elite soldiers, scientists, historians, and researchers, who use the Transporter (time machine) to go back in time. What will they discover? Will they be prepared for what’s to come and what will happen to history if they use modern technology to defeat the Vikings?

I have to be honest, it took a long time for me to figure out what was going on in this book. In alternating chapters, we get the research team and a mysterious man named Michael lost in the forest. Was Michael in the past or the present? What was his relationship to the research team? Honestly, it didn’t make sense to me until much later.

The action scenes were full of adrenaline and suspense. Well written and described, they were the catalyst to keeping the plot moving. The science fiction, while intriguing in theory, came across as unbelievable at times. I really had to suspend my belief in order to stay inside the story. The characters were lush, well-developed beings, each with his/her own voice. The time travel and the historical sub-plots were well-conceived, well-researched and were the highlight of the book.

If you like science fiction, time travel historical fiction with plenty of action and a killer ending, you’ll love this book.

Favorite Character/Quote: Tatae. She’s the most intriguing character and I felt an instant connection with her. Strong, beautiful, complex is only a few of her characteristics and yet, I find myself unable to describe why I love her so much. I guess her aura, her sense of right and wrong are what makes her unique.

My Rating:  4 stars
