Beauty. Romance. Power. It’s all in the eye of the BEHOLDER.

At last, Elea has found the love of her life. Unfortunately, the evil Tsar Viktor is about to unleash an army of twisted mages bent on killing everyone Elea cares about… including the man who’s stolen her heart.

So what’s a powerful witch to do? Why, organize a league of magical warriors, of course!

Elea recruits and trains a fighting force to take down the Tsar. That’s challenge enough, but on the eve of battle, Elea realizes that her true enemies may be far more powerful than even Viktor: The deities Oni and Yuri could be out to destroy her as well. With major battles brewing on two fronts, Elea’s not sure that she’ll win, but with true love to inspire her, she’s certainly ready to fight.

Thirsty for Water is #99cents! #YA #paranormal #KindleUnlimited

Title: Thirsty for Water: A Short Story

Author: N. N. Light

Genre: Paranormal, Young Adult, Short Story

Book Blurb:

Juliet can’t wait to graduate from high school and finally move on with her life. Five more days and she’s free. She gazes out the window while her history teacher, Mrs. Johnson, drones on about war, famine and lack of water in Africa.

A gong rings, startling Juliet out of her daydream. She looks around to see if it was one of her classmates pulling a prank when a little boy carrying a spear appears. Is he a ghost or something more? He pleads for her help and before she can argue, she is transported to a small village in Africa. History comes alive like never before and Juliet must decide how she can help Noko and his village before it’s too late.

Thirsty for Water tells the story of Africa and the need for water in an approachable way for children of all ages. A great learning tool for teachers, parents and libraries.

Excerpt:

“How do you know my name?” She gasped and tried to pinch her arm.

“I know all about you.  My name is Noko.” He paused and reached out to touch her arm. “Why are you hurting yourself like that?”

His hand felt cool on her arm and she stopped. If he was a ghost, I wouldn’t be able to feel him.  This must be real… but how?  She reached up and touched his thumb with her index finger.  His skin was dry yet very real.

“I was m-m-making sure you were real.”  She leaned forward and whispered, “Why are you here?  What do you want with me?”

He took his hand away and smiled.  “Your elder there is talking about my country and all you can think about is getting out of here.  Where I come from, there is no school.  Children like me hunt, fish and work in the fields.  You are lucky to sit here all day and not work.”

She leaned back in her chair and thought about it.  No school, only working to survive.  It was a sobering thought and she shivered.

Praise for Thirsty for Water:

“I loved it. I had no idea just how short short would be when I started it, but what a lovely tale to teach & inspire! I feel strongly a connection being made always holds the best potential to calm, comfort & nourish, to move & inspire hope, to insight change or instill lessons. And for me, I feel any kind of travel…time travel, dimension travel (I’m a big fan of the Twilight Zone!), or even a story with a “real” trip involved always helps to create that connection somehow. It was THAT quick…& true…once Juliet felt a connection to Noko…it was a done deal! So beautiful. The story simple…& short…yet so powerful.” – Amazon Reviewer

Fates Divided (Halven Rising #1)
by Jules Barnard
Genre: YA Paranormal
Release Date: August 31st 2015

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000037_00044]

Summary from Goodreads:

Elena Rosales has busted her ass to get into a good college. She’s the only one in her family ever to attend, and expectations are high. No pressure. But Elena’s got this one in the bag, because she’s as dependable as the molecules she studies, as reliable as the chemical reactions that comfort her in their predictability. Until they don’t.

Elena has always wondered why her mother abandoned her on her first birthday. It’s not until she turns eighteen and her chemistry experiments go berserk that she learns the truth: Her mother wasn’t human, and the Fae are willing to harm those Elena loves if she doesn’t use her power over the elements to cure them of a deadly disease.

Derek, Elena’s brooding neighbor, isn’t the friendliest guy, but he has access to an off-hours lab and is willing to help Elena create the antivirus. He has his own secrets to keep, and this business Elena is mixed up in could blow his cover. But when Elena and Derek get together, more than chemicals spark fire—and they soon discover just how complicated attraction can get when they find themselves on the other side of the portal, fighting for survival. Lives collide, and allegiance and love are tested, in Fates Divided.

In the Halven Rising Series, love and ancient allegiances are threatened when the worlds of Fae and Halven collide. Each Halven Rising novel features a different couple and may be read as a standalone, but an overreaching story arc connects the books, so it’s fun to read them in order.

Excerpt:

Keen straightened and shrugged one shoulder. “As Portia said, millennia ago, angels mated with humans and created the Fae.” He turned the knob to the Fae classroom without opening it. “Fae only mate with Fae. At times, they’ve lain with humans and created a diluted, lesser being, the Halven. It doesn’t happen often. Fae do not generally desire humans. But when it happens, we must watch the offspring for signs of abilities.”

Doesn’t happen often? Must happen enough that they’d built the university.

Derek snorted. “Sounds like some serious denial you’ve got going on there, buddy.”

Keen shot him a look and opened the door.

Before Elena could walk through, Derek pulled her aside and spoke low in her ear. “Mating with humans? Tirnan and the Fae realm?” He shook his head. “We stick together inside Fae-U, got it?”

Elena wet her chapped lips. The things Keen had said, Derek’s deep voice in her ear and the protective way he’d been acting toward her—all equally distracting.

Firebird by @CatherineMesick It’s a Fight to the Death #bookreview #FridayReads

Firebird

Title: Firebird (Book 2, Pure Series)

Author: Catherine Mesick

Genre: Paranormal, Young Adult

Book Blurb:

Sixteen-year-old Katie Wickliff wants nothing more than to settle into a quiet life with her cursed beloved, William. But both Katie’s past—and William’s—are far too troubled to allow them to live in peace. Shortly after Katie discovers that a shadowy figure has placed a price on her head—and that a pack of vampires is out to collect the reward—William disappears, leaving Katie alone and unprotected.

Separated from her true love and surrounded on all sides by danger, Katie must find out who it is that hunts her—before her life is claimed.

My Review:

This is the second book in the Pure series and Firebird picks up a few weeks later. Katie and William are together (which I love) and everything appears to be back to normal. That is, until two old friends of William’s (vampires, naturally) appear with a request. Innokenti and Anton ask for both her and William to return to Krov, Russia. William flat-out refuses to go and Katie is left to wonder what’s going on.

Innokenti reveals several vampires are out to capture/kill Katie (Little Sun) in a version of a Slayerfest (Buffy reference, sorry but I couldn’t help thinking it as I was reading). Katie doesn’t know who to trust and then in the midst of this crisis, William vanishes. Was he captured or did he just abandon her? Katie’s heartbroken either way and in a struggle to pick up the pieces, she agrees to go back to Krov with GM (her grandmother). Has she just signed her own death warrant or will she be able to find William and seek the answers to what’s happening?

I must say, this was very much a darker book than the first one. Katie has everyone from her GM to her friends bashing her relationship with William and they all gang up on her constantly. GM and her friends dismiss what’s happened in the previous book which was annoying. What kind of friends and family do that?

I loved the fact that Mesick filled in the reader with backstory just in case you didn’t read book one. It reminded me what happened in Pure (book one) and kept the story moving along.

I won’t give away any spoilers but I was extremely upset with the ending. It rankled me how it ended and I wanted to throw my Kindle out the window. So, I had to drop a full star in my rating.

Certain characters made this a book worth reading and their appearances kept me captivated. I loved the introduction of Anton and GM’s paramour. I’m hoping book three will tie up all the loose ends.

If you’re a big fan of vampire, paranormal and mythology, you’re going to love this whole series. In Firebird, you’ll find more vampires than you can shake a stick at and the action propels the story forward. Fans of Twilight will love this one!

Favorite Character: Anton. I loved his addition to the cast of characters in this series. It’s obvious from the start that he and William have a history, a combative one. But when William disappears, Anton comes calling. He’s a deliciously evil creature and tempts Katie. Will she be caught under his spell or will she be able to resist his song? You’ll have to read Firebird to find out.

Favorite Quote: Anton’s amusement deepened. “Too stunned to speak? I have that effect on a lot of women.”

My Rating:  3.5 stars

It’s a Ceruleans Print Party and You Can #Win Complete Series @MeganTayte #Giveaway #YA

Ceruleans poster

The Ceruleans: mere mortals infused with power over life and death. If the might of the heavens were in your hands, would you be sinner or saint?

The Ceruleans is a young-adult paranormal romance series set in a world in which angels walk among us. The Ceruleans don’t think of themselves as angels, though – just ordinary people who happen to have a most extraordinary gift. And certainly few of them behave like angels. Because as it turns out, humans don’t handle well the reality of playing god…

The story of the Ceruleans spans five books:

Death Wish

IN SEARCH OF THE MEANING OF DEATH, SHE’LL FIND THE MEANING OF LIFE.

Seventeen-year-old Scarlett Blake is haunted by death. Her estranged sister has made the ultimate dramatic exit. Running away from school, joining a surfing fraternity, partying hard: that sounds like Sienna. But suicide? It makes no sense.

Following in her sister’s footsteps, Scarlett comes to an isolated English cove with grand plans to uncover the truth. Alone. But she hasn’t reckoned on meeting two boys who are determined to help her. Luke: the blue-eyed surfer who’ll see the real Scarlett, who’ll challenge her, who’ll save her. And Jude: the elusive drifter with a knack for turning up whenever Scarlett’s in need.

As Scarlett’s quest for the truth unravels, so too does her grip on reality as she’s always known it. Because there’s something strange going on in this little cove. A dead magpie circles the skies. A dead deer watches from the undergrowth. Hands glow with light. Warmth. Power.

What transpires is a summer of discovery. Of what it means to conquer fear. To fall in love. To choose life. To choose death.

To believe the impossible.

Forget-Me-Not

IN THE FACE OF DEATH, SHE MUST PROTECT THOSE SHE LOVES.

Death is stalking Scarlett Blake. As if the encroaching darkness in her head wasn’t enough, she’s become disturbingly accident prone. Falling off a cliff isn’t ideal when all you want is as much time as possible to live, to love.

Her fate is horrifying. Unbearable. And inescapable. No one can save Scarlett from The End that’s looming. Not Jude, the Cerulean who is intent on Claiming her. Not Luke, the boy who is intent on loving her.

The clock is ticking, louder with every heartbeat. Now Scarlett must decide how best to protect the people she loves. Will she trust in Jude and the life-after-death he promises? Will she stand against the Fallen, who have her sister captive? Will she carry the burden of her death alone – every headache, every hallucination, every wrenching, aching emotion?

And when the clock falls silent, when the darkness eclipses the light, will Scarlett fight for life? Or will she have no choice but to surrender?

Wild Blue Yonder

IN A WARPED HEAVEN, SHE MUST CHOOSE HER FATE: OBEDIENCE OR REBELLION

When Scarlett Blake chose life-after-death as a Cerulean, she expected to grieve for all she left behind: her boyfriend, her best friend, her mother, her home. But at least Cerulea, her heaven, would be… well, heavenly. Right?

Wrong.

The world in which Scarlett awakens is very far from her idea of a utopia. Picturesque, sure, and serene. But there can be no paradise within the unforgiving walls of a prison, be they of cold, hard stone or beautifully blue water.

Now Scarlett faces her hardest decision yet: be a good, dutiful Cerulean, or be true to herself and fight for freedom.

And if she can find a way to escape, what then? Can she finally reunite with her lost sister? Can she save Sienna from the murderous Fallen? Can she evade her destiny with the Ceruleans?

Can Scarlett Blake ever reclaim her life-before-death… or must she let go of all she loves?

Devil and the Deep

STORM CLOUDS ARE GATHERING, AND THEY WILL RAIN BLOOD.

Scarlett is living her happy-ever-after, back in the real world. Only the ‘happy’ part is proving problematic.

For starters, there’s the isolation. Being a Cerulean among humans is fraught with risk, so her time with people can only be fleeting. Which means being with Luke but not being with Luke.

Then there’s her Cerulean light, her power over life and death. Less awesome talent, as it turns out, and more overwhelming responsibility. And it comes with rules – rules that are increasingly difficult to obey.

But what’s really pushing Scarlett to the precipice is something much bigger than herself, than her life in the cove. A force to be reckoned with:

Blood.

When long-buried truths are exposed, will Scarlett keep her head above water – or will she drown in the blood-dimmed tide that is unleashed?

Darkly, Deeply, Beautifully

DARKNESS HAS FALLEN, AND SHE ALONE WILL SEE THE LIGHT.

With her mother’s life hanging in the balance, Scarlett is devastated – and done with being in the dark. She wants answers, all of them.

But when was her pursuit of the truth ever straightforward?

Pulling a single thread impels a great unravelling. And each revelation will force Scarlett to rethink what she thought she knew about the Ceruleans, the Fallen, her family – herself.

All that came before was a mere prelude to this, the last journey. From London to Twycombe to Hollythwaite to Cerulea, Scarlett will be stalked by the ghosts of what has been, what may have been and what may come to pass. Until she reaches the place where it all began, and it all must end.

But in the final reckoning, none will survive unscathed. And some will not survive at all.

In this explosive conclusion to The Ceruleans series, all must be defined by their actions: sinner, saint… or something more beautiful entirely?

Megan Tayte bio

Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess fireman. ‘Write, Megan,’ her grandmother advised. So that’s what she did.

Thirty-odd years later, Megan is a professional writer and published author by day, and an indie novelist by night. Her fiction – young adult romance with soul – recently earned her the SPR’s Independent Woman Author of the Year award.

Megan grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in the village of Standish, Greater Manchester. She lives with her husband, a proud Scot who occasionally kicks back in a kilt; her son, a budding artist with the soul of a palaeontologist; and her baby daughter, a keen pan-and-spoon drummer who sings in her sleep. Pure by @CatherineMesick is a Wonderful #ParanormalRomance! #bookreview #books #ya

Pure

Title: Pure (Book 1, Pure Series)

Author: Catherine Mesick

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult Paranormal

Book Blurb:

Sixteen-year-old Katie Wickliff lives quietly in the small town of Elspeth’s Grove, unaware of the troubled past that forced her grandmother to flee Russia with her when Katie was only a child. When people in the town begin to disappear, and Katie’s own home is attacked by a terrifying creature, Katie and her grandmother return to Russia to find answers.

Pursuing them is the handsome William – who just might be a vampire. Katie discovers that William is indeed partially a vampire, but he is also one of the Sidh, an ancient clan whose members are gifted with great power – a clan to which Katie’s deceased mother also belonged.

Soon, Katie discovers that her mother’s seemingly natural death was actually murder, and she is forced to confront the question she wants to face the least: Is William her otherworldly protector, or is he the dark creature who killed her mother eleven years ago?

My Review:

Katie’s your typical teenage girl living in a small town. She lives with her grandmother (both parents died) whom Katie refers to as GM, has her circle of friends who she confides in and lives a pretty mundane life. That is, until people start disappearing and she starts seeing things in the mirror.

What’s happening to me, she asks herself. Am I going crazy? But when she starts to investigate the disappearance of her classmates, she steps into a world filled with vampires, demons and all things supernatural. Is she the Little Sun from the Russian bedtime story from long ago? And who is this mysterious William?

In a nutshell, this is a retelling of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but with a Russian vibe. I loved the mythology the author injected into the story while still staying true to the lore of slayers. The supernatural scenes were captivating and I found myself nudging Katie along to find out the truth. The plot unfolds at a good pace and there were some terrific surprises I didn’t see coming. I loved the character William.

One thing I had an issue with was the whole GM nickname thing. It didn’t flow when I read it and many times, it took me out of the story. Now, I’m sure this is common slang for teenagers nowadays so it only took a half star off my review. Other than that, it was a great read!

If you’re a fan of paranormal romance and looking for a different spin on it, this is the book for you. In fact, this is book one in a series. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to dive into the rest of the books.

Favorite Character: Katie. I love how real she is. Everything she goes through, from discovering who she is to dealing with her best friend ignoring her, comes across as real. She’s your everyday teenager who’s curious about things her GM keeps from her. When sparks fly between her and William, her reactions resonate with the reader and I yearn to experience first love again. A great role model, too.

Last weekend, we offered Thirsty for Water FREE and it was a great success! So many downloads, we couldn’t keep up with it. So, we’ve slashed the price of our super short story to 99 cents! Mr. N says I’m crazy and will probably raise the price back up to its regular price of $2.99 at any moment. So hurry and get your copy now:

If you’re a member of Kindle Unlimited, it’s FREE for you!

Here’s the blurb:

Juliet can’t wait to graduate from high school and finally move on with her life. Five more days and she’s free. She gazes out the window while her history teacher, Mrs. Johnson, drones on about war, famine and lack of water in Africa.

A gong rings, startling Juliet out of her daydream. She looks around to see if it was one of her classmates pulling a prank when a little boy carrying a spear appears. Thirsty for Water tells the story of Africa and the need for water in an approachable way for children of all ages. A great learning tool for teachers, parents and libraries.

Here’s an exclusive excerpt:

Juliet lifted her head and saw a little boy with a spear in his hand standing on Mrs. Johnson’s desk.  Her eyes widened as he began to speak.

“Don’t you find my country’s plight troublesome?” He spoke perfect English and he looked no more than eight years old.  His dark skin and hair contrasted with his white tunic.  He had four painted red lines across his cheeks and his spearhead glinted as he aimed it at her.

She looked around but no one seemed to notice the boy.  She turned back to him and shook her head.  “This can’t be real. I must be dreaming this. Wake up, Juliet.”

The boy sighed and climbed down from the desk.  He walked towards her.  “I am real, as real as you, Juliet.”

Thirsty for Water by N. N. Light is #FREE May 6-8 #YA #Paranormal #ASMSG

Looking for a super-quick read this weekend? It’s your lucky day because our super-short story, Thirsty for Water, is FREE Friday through Sunday (May 6-8).

What’s it about?

Here’s what readers have to say about it:

“A short but highly emotive story that makes me wish this sort of thing could really happen to snap many of us out of our comfortable complacency.
When you really think about it, it’s always the smallest person, or in this case, village, that gets left out.” ~ Chris Graham (otherwise known as Chris the Story Reading Ape)

This is an inspiring story of giving to others unselfishly. A high school girl, Juliet, while in her school classroom has a vision. Her teacher is talking about a young boy and the severe problems in his village. During this vision Juliet meets this young boy, Noko, who takes her to his village to show Juliet how he lives. Juliet is so shocked by what she sees that she announces in class that she will donate to the boy’s cause to bring water to his village. The other students join in because of her enthusiasm.

A lovely tale that touches the heart and brings tears to the eyes! I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed this short story.” ~ Janice Spina

A Plea:

We’re in need of reviews so please take a moment and write a sentence or two if you download it. We love hearing from our readers and if you like it, let us know. We’re thinking about expanding it to a full-fledged novel but we would love your feedback.

Also, please share and if you think you know someone who’d like this book, let them know. 🙂

Excerpt from The Fairy Bargain by Blaire Edens

The next morning, drawn by the rich aroma of coffee, Alvin walked into the Butterfly Café and pulled two wrinkled one-dollar bills from his front pocket. Not counting the three quarters clinking against each other in the pocket of his jacket, it was the only money he had left.

He wasn’t likely to earn more today. If the dark gray clouds weren’t enough of a clue, his well-tuned senses told him it was going to rain buckets. He was the only one in the usually crowded café. The tourists must have seen the weather report and decided to sleep late. He would’ve liked to have done the same, but hard dirt didn’t lend itself to a rainy day snooze. Just as he opened the door of the shop, he heard the first rumble of thunder and felt the crack of lightning move through him.

Stormy weather intensified his abilities and made it very difficult for him to concentrate on reality. Maybe a jolt of caffeine would clear his mind, shake loose the sleep-deprivation cobwebs, and allow him to figure out a way to make enough money for lunch.

It was foolish to waste his cash on expensive coffee when he could’ve headed two blocks south and gotten a free cup from the soup kitchen but something in the café was drawing him like an iron filing to a magnet.

As soon as he saw her, he knew.

It wasn’t the coffee, it was her. She was drawing him closer.

He’d never seen her before and yet there was something familiar about her.

Even though the girl behind the counter looked exhausted, she was beautiful. Delicate and petite, she moved with grace. It was deeper than attraction and he wasn’t used to the feeling. The son of a Prince, he’d been spoiled. In his father’s house, he’d always had beautiful women at his disposal, but he’d never seen one who looked like her.

Her beauty transcended the physical. That was unusual for a human. As a rule, they were quite shallow and self-absorbed.

Like I haven’t been accused of the same thing.

She reminded him of a tiny songbird, and if he hadn’t known better, he would’ve thought she was…

That’s crazy. It’s been too long since you’ve had a decent sleep.

She’d been crying. A lot. Her eyes were bloodshot and ringed in purple, evidence that she wasn’t sleeping well. Her strawberry blond hair was twisted into a loose ponytail and her clothes were rumpled. She was worried. Really worried. The vibrations of her emotions radiated out in waves and washed over him, jamming all his circuits.

He needed a dose of caffeine more than ever. “Hey,” he said, leaning against the gleaming stainless counter. “How much is a cup of Breakfast Blend?” Until the past few weeks, he’d never had to worry about the cost of anything. He simply snapped his fingers and the item appeared, regardless of the cost.

Now, things were different.

She looked him over, her amber eyes were hawk-like. There was sadness there, deep despair she was trying desperately to hide. “How much can you afford?”

“I have two bucks.” He handed her the bills. When she reached out to take them, their fingers touched. Her worries slammed into him with the force of a semi. He felt her sadness and despair so acutely, it could have been his own. She jumped backwards at the touch, nearly losing her footing on the black and white tile.

“But I’m happy to barter,” he said, curious. “In exchange for a cup of coffee, I can tell your fortune.” He crossed his fingers hoping she’d agree. Not only did he want to know more about her, he sensed that she was in trouble.

She smoothed her apron and tucked one loose curl behind her ear and sighed. “I’m not sure I want to know.”

“It might help you make better decisions.”

She looked at him shrewdly, sizing him up, trying to measure his intentions. After a long pause, she exhaled and stepped back. He must have passed the test. “Okay, I’ll bite. Why the hell not?” She pushed the money back toward him and grabbed a mug from underneath the counter. “I’m FayeLynn. Pick a table and I’ll join you.”

“Alvin and thanks for the joe.”

Her smile was radiant and it lit every corner of the room, even on such a gray day, even when something was really bothering her. “I hope you have the winning lottery numbers.”

He chose a two-topper near the window. It was just past seven and there was no foot traffic on the sidewalk. When she slid into the chair across from him with a mug of her own, he asked, “You won’t get in trouble for sitting on the clock, will you?”

“Nope. I’ve taken care of all my side work. I doubt we’ll have any takers until later anyway.” She took a sip of her coffee, and he watched the steam float up from the surface and over her face. In the mist, she looked even more like…

Cut it out, Alvin. She’s an ordinary waitress. Tell her fortune, drink the coffee and be on your way.

Except it wasn’t that easy. “Can I ask you a very personal question?”

Without any hesitation, she nodded.

“Has anyone ever told you that you might be…” His voice trailed off into a whisper before he lost his courage. He noticed the blush that spread across her face and wondered how many secrets she held.  “Never mind. Are you ready to get started?”

“Do you need my birthday or anything?”

“No. Just close your eyes and try to relax. I’m going to place two fingers on your pulse points.”

Her eyes widened at his touch. He was glad he wasn’t the only one to feel the rush of electricity that had surged between them earlier.

“I’m harmless,” he assured her. “Promise.”

Character Inspiration

People always ask authors where they get their ideas. Do they base their characters off of people they knew, that kind of thing.

I don’t directly base my characters off of anyone. I do draw from experiences though. Everyone does. In the case of Senior Year Bites, Meg, Steph and Ann’s friendship was drawn from a similar (without the supernatural elements unfortunately) friendship I had in middle school and high school.

I had two friends and we hung out together through most of middle school and part of high school. We did a ton of things together, especially when we were younger. I drew a lot from that friendship when I wrote Meg, Steph and Ann. Now, I didn’t say, oh, Steph is D, Meg is me and Ann is S by any means. There are elements of all of us in each character. And I did not base Meg off of myself at all. I also drew from other people and experiences when I shaped those characters.

It was kind of fun to draw from that past relationship though. Some memories it brought up were great, some painful. Some were along the lines of ‘what was I thinking.’ My only defense was that I was young and had a lot to learn. Still do incidentally.

Incidentally, the guys in Senior Year Bites are not directly drawn from high school people I knew. They were created the way I make most of my other characters. Little bits from here, little bits from there.

Anyway, that’s a brief insight into three of the main characters in Senior Year Bites.

Senior Year Bites (The Clanless #1)

Release Date: 07/07/14

Untold Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Senior year is supposed to be fun: boys, dances and graduation. It’s significantly harder to enjoy it when you’re dead.

Thanks to an innocent game of Truth or Dare, I wound up sleeping in a graveyard. Probably not the brightest thing I’ve ever done, but thanks to a couple of well-placed fangs, I’m here to tell the tale.

Vampires might stalk pop culture, but they’re just myths, right? Yeah. Not so much…

Everything seems a lot more difficult when you’re a nocturnal creature of the night, especially school. I was managing, but couldn’t keep it hidden from my friends. Steph decided that we should be cool, like superheroes, and fight crime.

I’m a vampire, not a hero. Living in a sleepy New England town, crime is a little harder to come by. At least it is until a serial killer moves into the area. He’s got the authorities stumped, but then again, the cops don’t have a teenage, blood-sucking, non-hero on their team. It doesn’t take long for me to discover the world is full of monsters. I may be one of them…but will I turn out to be the hero, or the killer everyone is looking for.

Excerpt:

The station wagon backed out of its parking spot, narrowly missing the cars on either side, and bumping against the fenced smoking area. The gears shuddered as he threw the car into drive. Gravel crunched under the tires as the car slowly turned toward the exit–and us. Rocks flew as the angry drunk slammed on the gas. The wheels fought for purchase before the car jumped forward, still fishtailing.

Everything slowed down until I felt like I had all the time in the world to grab Ann’s and Steph’s arms and pull them out of its path. I stopped by the fence and watched emotionless as the car plowed into the tree we’d been hiding behind.

“Meg!” someone shouted. I staggered as everything sped up to normal speed–shouting, screaming, the horn blaring, and steam hissing from the cracked engine assaulted my ears. Someone yelled to call for the cops, others for an ambulance. I stood and stared, finally shocked by it all.

“Meg!” Someone shook my shoulder.

I jumped and spun around, crouching, expecting an attack. Steph backed away, arms out.

“Sorry,” she whispered, eyes wide. Ann stepped away as well, eyes equally huge.

I took a deep breath, struggling to tune out the chaos around us.

“You guys all right?” I finally managed to ask.

They both nodded, glancing over at the car and back to me. Steph looked over my shoulder, tilting her head slightly.

“Bridget! How in the hell did you do that?”

My breathing quickened, and the urge to run made my legs twitch. Gary’s familiar scent penetrated my shock.

“Shit,” I whispered.

“Bridget?” Steph gave me a confused look.

I could have killed her then, in the brief instant before I regained my composure. My focus sharpened like it did when I felt threatened. I hurried away from all of them, not wanting to lose control and attack my friend, not wanting to face Gary and his questions, and above all, not wanting to face the fear that made Ann tremble every time she glanced my direction.

“Meg!” Steph called, coming after me.

My instincts shouted at me to run, but I couldn’t leave them. They were out here because of me, and I had to make sure they stayed safe. Even Sleepy Town, USA had its dangers.

I stopped at the edge of the woods, away from the chaos of the crash, and away from potential questions from the authorities. Rough bark dug into my shoulder when I leaned against a tree, further anchoring me to reality. Ann and Gary hesitated a few moments longer than Steph, but they weren’t far behind her.

“Meg.” Steph carefully didn’t stand too close.

I appreciated the distance, but I had calmed by the time Ann and Gary caught up. Gary, amazingly enough, kept quiet. I actually liked him a little for it.

“So, Meg, want to introduce me to your friends?” He finally had the nerve to ask after the silence stretched out for several minutes.
He didn’t even emphasize my name, simply said it as if he’d always known it.

“Gary, Steph, and Ann.”

Sirens wailed in the distance, but only I could hear them. “Guys, unless you want to stay and talk to the cops, we should probably get out of here.”

“Great. There’s this coffee shop within walking distance that will be open a bit longer.

Let’s go chat,” Gary suggested.

I glared at Gary, but Steph and Ann were still shaken and agreed at once. I shrugged, and we hurried into the woods before someone could see us.
